Essay About The House on Mango Street
In Sandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street, the character of Esperanza starts as a lonely character but finally develops into a cheerful character. In the first couple chapters of the book The House on Mango Street Esperanza, the main character of the novel moves to a new house on mango street and doesn’t have any friends. Esperanza all her life has had no friends and has been not educated very well. These are some of the reasons the book The House on Mango Street is a shocking story. Here are some more examples of how Esperanza started as a lonely character but then quickly transformed into a cheerful character throughout the book.
Esperanza ended up moving to a house on mango street due to her old apartments having issues with plumbing. The family had dreamed of a white house with lots of space and bathrooms, but the house on Mango Street has only one bedroom and one bathroom and is bright pink. When she moved she barely knew anyone but her own family. The people in her family were her parents, her brothers, Carlos and Kiki, and her sister, Nenny. Esperanza absolutely hates the house but her parents tell her that this is a temporary house. When she moved she knew no one. She was very lonely and didn’t know what to do with her life. She has even said in the book “We’ve all felt lonely and ashamed, awkward and ugly, and we all have hopes and dreams.” As the book progresses through she meets new people and eventually turns out to be a very cheerful girl.
Towards the end of the book, Esperanza starts to become a very cheerful character. During this time she has made a lot of friends and isn’t so lonely as before. But, because of the people, she has met she has transformed into a cheerful character. Due to the new people, she has met she has forgotten about how lonely she was and has basically started a new life. An example of her being cheerful in the novel is when she gets to the new house she says “the colors make me happy” which tells the reader that she has forgotten about her loneliness and has started to become more intelligent and cheerful. One more reason there is proof she has transformed into a cheerful or happy character is that the people she hangs around are always having a good time and are cheerful which made her start to forget about her loneliness and made her remodel how she saw herself. Even Though Esperanza is not happy with her surrounding she says she will always be on Mango Street no matter what happens at the end of the book.
The House on Mango Street was a decent book but all in all, Esperanza revealed her full potential when she stepped out of her comfort zone and revealed who she really is. If she had never moved to Mango Street she would have never experienced what she did in this novel. She would have always been the same no room for change. But the fact that she moved to a new house, she became a new Esperanza which made her start as a new person and create new friends and be able to not only be cheerful but intelligent as well. When Esperanza moved she just realized how much potential she had to be a good person. Her friends and parents, though they weren’t the friendliest people still cared about her. This is the reason the House on Mango Street shows how life can change no matter where you are.
