What is a Research Paper?

A research paper can be defined as an expanded essay that identifies and explores scientific, social or technical issues. When asked to write it, you will be researching a certain field of study to find the most relevant information on the field. If you are writing the essay for the first time, this can prove to be a daunting task. But with a focused mind and after finding an example of research paper, the process can be easier.

Instructors for high school and for college use the research paper to test the writing skills of their students. This means, if you want to graduate, you will need to have a proper understanding of how to approach this assignment. If you are finding it difficult to write the essay, we will show you how to go about it. Also, by finding a relevant research paper example, you can easily understand the format of the essay and how to go about writing it.

How to Start Off a Research Paper?

Writing a research paper can be divided into several stages. The first step involves choosing the right topic. If your instructor has not provided you with a topic, you will have to consider a few factors when choosing one. Is there enough material on the topic? How new and unique is that topic? Is it pertinent to my occupation or class? Make sure you select a subject that you will enjoy writing about. When you pick a topic on something you are passionate about, this will be evident in your paper.

The next step will be to begin your research. This can be in the form of web pages, books, blog posts, interviews and journal articles. Make sure you are searching for professionals resources that provide valid insights and research into the topic. Ensure that you are using a minimum of 5 sources. Search for a database covering the subject.

After gathering the research, you can print it out. You can also annotate it to ensure that writing and outlining your paper becomes easier. Now that you have all the relevant information, you can go to the next stage which is writing the essay itself. It can be helpful to look at research paper examples to understand the structure better.

How Long Should a Research Paper Be?

To answer this question, we need to consider several technical aspects of the essay. These include its writing and format. All features should guide you with a level of certainty on whether your paper is long enough to be considered an academic. Majority of instructors will request the paper to be in a PDF format, with a Times New Roman font and typed in size 12. A full-page Word document will consist of 500 words. Therefore, the text should be between 2500 and 3000 words.

Some papers require certain additional information besides the number of words. This information may include graphs, images, tables and different forms of illustrations. In case your essay needs a lot of details such as graphs that rob on space, you should compensate it by writing an acceptable amount of content. Remember that the length of your research paper will be affected by the headings, captions and subtitles.

When we consider all the above factors, we can conclude that a good research paper should have an acceptable length of 7 pages. There is no problem with having 6 pages in your education, but you should avoid going over 8 pages. Exceeding this number will make the paper too long and will prevent your instructor from grading the paper properly.
