Good evening, my name is Kelsey Jenkins and I am a student at HGTC hoping to eventually pursue a Ph.D. in psychology.

Everyone is familiar with the question “What do you want to be when you grow up”? And everyone knows the answer is bound to change numerous times before you grow up. Initially, when people posed this question, I wanted to be an artist or an archeologist but then it started to change to a forensic psychologist. My life has taken many turns since then but never any as drastic as the day I decided I wasn’t giving up on my dream. Graduation is supposed to be one of the ecstatic moments in your life but mine felt uncertain and overwhelming. I wasn’t certain I had made the right decision to study architecture and felt I was walking into a wall. Built-up with so much anxiety, I never walked across that stage to receive my diploma.

This evening, I would like to tell you a little about myself in the attempt to let you get to know me better. I have brought three items and a bag that represent myself – watercolor brush, my HGTC ID Badge, and a DSM5 book.

First, let’s begin with a watercolor brush from my past. Water coloring was a huge part of my career as a bachelor student and it was my preference because I felt I could relate to the watered-down pigment. Water is ever changing and ever flowing, and I have sought that in my life. Watercolor equally represents my life because it is a part of myself, I have grown from. I devoted four years of my life working towards a career I wasn’t genuinely passionate about because I was told was the best option for me.

Secondly, I will be presenting an item from my future which is my HGTC employee ID badge. I work on campus as a Wavenet specialist both here on Grand Strand and in Conway. This is the first job in a long time that I am extremely passionate about and love coming to work every day. It is equally significant to me because it is the job that made me realize I want to become a professor. I love the atmosphere of being able to help students in an academic setting.

The third item is the most important to me because it is the item that represents all my struggles and triumphs as a psychology student. This is a DSM5 or a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and represents my dreams of becoming a research psychologist for the FBI. This book also represents my strive to become a professor and share my knowledge with eager minds like myself.

Lastly, my bag is crucial to me because it is the bag, I take with me on vacations and road trips. For me, it represents my sense of adventure while also showcasing, my love and passion for reading as well as cats.

In conclusion, my speech is to inform you about myself and my overall personality. In attempts to do so, I have brought items that represent myself – watercolor brush, my HGTC ID Badge, and a DSM5 book. Let the items that surround you inspire you every day just as my items have done for me.
