“The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year” (At Edgar Snyder & Associates, 2018, pg.1). In the United States, 47 states have statewide regulations on texting and driving. However, 9 in 10 people still engage in smartphone activities while driving. Every day, people are getting hurt because of drivers who text and drive. You should not text and drive because you are more likely to crash, you can get someone hurt, and you will pay the price.

When you text and drive, you have a greater chance of crashing. Every year, 1.6 million car crashes happen due to texting and driving. “If you text and drive, you’re 23 times more likely to have a car crash” (Parkview trauma center, 2011, pg.1). This shows the danger you put yourself in when you text and drive. You can even get someone hurt if you get distracted with technology.

If you text and drive, you can kill yourself and/or other people. You put yourself and/or other people’s lives at risk when you crash. “Each day in the United States, approximately 9 people are killed and more than 1,000 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver” (CDC, 2015, pg.1). This shows how texting and driving for even a moment can change someone’s life forever. In relation to hurting yourself and/or other people, you can lose lots of money.

In some states, you can get fined if the cops see you text and drive. For example, in Surprise, Arizona you get fined up to $250 if the police see you texting and driving. “Fines and punishments for texting and driving range greatly depending on the state that you live in; for some states, the fine is merely $20, however, in others, it can be up to $500” (Levey, 2017, pg.1). This shows how much money you can lose for texting and driving, so you should avoid it. Not doing this can make your life harder than it needs to be.

Texting and driving can cause you to crash, hurt, kill someone, and/or pay a lot of money. Texting while driving makes you 23 times more likely to be involved in a car accident. You can be the cause of someone else’s pain, their family's and at the same time, you make yourself part of another statistic. In addition, you get fined up to $500 if the authorities see you breaking the law. Therefore, next time you are driving to your destination, make sure you don’t text and drive, people are counting on you to arrive safely.
