What to say in a video about reflections on your emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability of an individual to understand his or her personal emotions and the emotions of other people. Questions that assess EI tend to focus on how a person manages his or herself and how one manages relationships with others. The questions are often behavioral which means they ask the individual to explain how he or she reacted to a past situation.

The following are some of the things that you should say in your video in order to gain an insight into your emotional intelligence.

  1. What is one of your weaknesses and how do you overcome the weakness? Perhaps you could mention that one of your weaknesses is that you tend to be procrastinator which means like postponing things/activities to a later time instead of doing them in time. You can say that you overcome this weakness by keeping a strict diary/schedule of activities to ensure that you perform all that is required of you at the right time.
  2. What motivates you in your work/studies? You could say that you are motivated by a self-driven desire to achieve the best in your career/studies. You can then add that you are a highly ambitious person who wants to achieve the most out of life.
  3. Describe a stressful work/study situation you’ve had. How did you resolve that situation? You can say that you had a lot of stress in adjusting to your workplace/school when you were initially started going there. You can then add that you overcame that stressful situation by making new friends who helped you adjust to your new environment.
  4. Describe a time when you received negative feedback about your work/studies and did not agree with the feedback. How did you handle that situation? You can say that there is a time you received feedback that your work performance or performance in school was below standard and you felt that this was not according to your expectations. Then explain that you handled the situation by putting more effort in your work or studies which helped to improve your performance.
  5. Describe when you received a set back at work/or school and how did you handle the situation. You can explain that you received a tongue lashing from your boss at work or bad grades in your report and you handled the situation by increasing your concentration at work/school which really had a turnaround on your performance ratings.
  6. Describe a time when you made a big mistake at work/school. How did you handle the situation? You can say that you once came into work/school very late because you overslept. You can then say that you handled the situation by apologizing to your boss at work or teacher at the school and ensuring that you always wake up in time to avoid being late.
  7. How would you handle a co-worker of a fellow student who consistently does not pull his weight on group assignments? You can say that you talked to the said co-worker or fellow student to understand what was dragging them down in terms of performance. Then you went ahead of your way to assist the colleague to improve their performance by helping them to do some of their work for them or coaching them after school.
  8. How do your colleagues benefit from working with you? Explain that your colleagues benefit from working with you because you are a team player who does their best for the benefit of the team.
  9. Describe a time when you did or said something that had a positive impact on an employee, coworker, or customer. Explain that you constantly complement your colleagues when they do something exemplary at work or school which has a positive effect on their morale.
  10. Have you ever noticed that someone at work/school was having a bad day? How did you know? What did you do? Explain that you once noticed that one of your colleagues was having a bad day because they were lagging behind in their work/studies. You assisted your colleague by offering to assist in doing some of their work for them.
  11. Describe a time when you had a dispute with a colleague. What did you do to deal with the situation? Explain that you once had a dispute with a colleague who had borrowed some cash from you and failed to pay as per agreement. You dealt with the situation by giving the colleague more time to refund the cash since you understood that he/she was going through a rough time financially.
  12. Describe why is it important to develop a rapport with your colleagues? Explain that developing a rapport with colleagues helps work/studies to proceed faster and smoothly. It also helps one to overcome work/study related challenges since the colleagues can help one to cope with the challenges.
  13. How do you build a rapport with your colleagues? Explain that one builds a good rapport with colleagues by being polite to them, helping them when they have problems, motivating them and appreciating their input in the workplace/school.
  14. Describe a time when understanding someone else’s perspective helped you accomplish a task or resolve an issue. Explain that whenever you have a disagreement with a colleague you always try to see things from their perspective in order to understand their thoughts or opinions on the issue that brought about the conflict. This helps you to be more accommodating of other people’s opinions and this helps to avoid conflicts at work/school.
  15. How do you motivate a colleague who is having problems at work/school? Explain that you first talk to the colleague to find out the root cause of the problem. You then go ahead to help your colleague overcome the problem by assisting them in any you can and then if you are unable to assist you to link the colleague to someone who can help them.

Answering these questions will provide a proper assessment of your emotional intelligence and ensure that you earn you an exemplary report.
