Birti Kaur Gandhi Mrs. Rosen English Honors 10 December 29, 2018 Essay Outline Hero’s Journey P1 = Background Information with Thesis Statement: Spider Man originally wrote by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and the original movie was released in 1962. Peter Parker get bitten by a genetically altered spider during a field trip and his “hero’s journey” begins from there”. P2 = The Separation: In the beginning of the movie, Peter Parker is a very intelligent, but he gets bullied a lot. He starts off as a regular high school student. He is an orphan and his aunt and uncle have taken him in. He basically only have two friends, Harry and Mary Jane. Call to Adventure: Peter Parker goes on a field trip to a laboratory and mistakenly gets bit by a spider which has been genetically altered. This bite changes his life in ways which are inhumane. This bite gives him “superpowers” which a spider would obtain.
Refusal of the Call / Supernatural Aid:
Peter is unaware of this for a period of time but when he does realize what has happened, he recognized his new powers. He is unsure on how to proceed. He doesn’t know how to use them of if he is supposed to use them. As he was a child who continuously was getting bullied, he could have used this powers in great use but instead he decides to carry on as an average normal boy. Crossing the First Threshold / Belly of the Whale: Peter crosses his first threshold at the time of his chase with his Uncle Ben’s killer. He hunts down his Uncle Ben’s murderer and uses his spider like powers. His lifestyle has now changed and he accepts that he is not an average high school kid anymore. Spider Man then traps the killer of his uncle and makes sure that he knows he is no longer the Peter Parker everyone knew him to be. P3 = The Initiation: Road of Trials: Peter’s friend, Harry, his father was having a street party for his employes at Oscorp. During this celebration, Norman puts a green goblin costume on and attempts to attack common people along with Mary Jane. Harry and Mary Jane were now in a relationship and Mary Jane is stuck on a balcony which is being destroyed. Peter also known as Spider Man puts on his wardrobe and comes ready to rescue Mary Jane who was in need.
Meeting with The Goddess / Woman as Temptress:
The green goblin who kidnapped Mary Jane also captured and kept hostage a crowd of little children in an elevator. This leaves Spiderman with a really difficult decision because it leaves him to pick the girl he really loves or the group of children. At the time he thinks he is unable to save both.
Atonement of Father:
In this case it is not his father it is his Uncle Ben. This event occurs early in his journey when the killing of his uncle takes place. Peter recognizes that his powers come with large responsibilities. Apotheosis: He completes his mission to save his city before they all become reptiles also after having the police shooting him. Also he impresses his girlfriend, Gwen’s father.
Ultimate Boon:
Spider Man now has to ultimately defeat the green goblin to keep everyone else out of harm's way. On the other hand Peter Parker ultimately wants the girl he loves, Mary Jane to fall in love with him. P4 = The Return: Refusal of the Return: Peter Parker does not refuse to return home, instead he knew he had reached his goal and wanted to go back to being a normal person. He wanted to stop worrying about others even though that wasn't in his nature.
Magical Flight / Rescue from Without:
Peter Parker lost his powers after his last mission but then randomly gains them back and begins to start missions again and swung through the city. Peter didn’t obtain a rescue from without and mostly did everything on his home without help.
Crossing Return Threshold:
Even after he was done being “Spider Man” and he had already brought the city out of all its troubles and made is safe, he still satisfies the city by letting them know if any danger strikes their way he will be there to help them through it.
Master of Two Worlds:
Peter Parker / Spider Man seems to have the best of both of his worlds. Post being a superhero he is an elite human. He is looked at as a bigger man, a role model for many and a city class leader. Freedom to Live: At the very end of the movie, the green goblin dies and that leave Spider Man at peace as his mission to keep his city out of harm’s way is complete because the green goblin caused the danger. Overall, “Spider Man” rescued the city from all danger and can now go back to his regular life. P5 = Conclusion / Significance of topic: Based on all of these events, it is made clear that without his rescue the city would be in great danger. He goes from a small nerdy nobody who got bullied and was just an orphan to a significant character with great responsibilities. He has transformed into who he is at the end of the movie due to his ordeal. Spider Man also knows about all the hate, crimes and negativity but chooses to ignore it and look at it using a different perspective. Spider Man went from a hated spider to a hero who his city will always count on when danger arrives their way.
