Pro Choice: Reasons to why Abortion should Stay Legal

One of the most controversial topics is on abortion and whether or not we should keep doing it or make it illegal. I support abortion and I think others should too, mainly because it can actually save children’s lives. What I just stated may sound like I just contradicted myself, but let me explain. First off abortion is when you terminate a pregnancy, but when I stated that it saves lives, I meant that when you do an abortion there is a good reason behind it, which is to not let a child into this world were the parents may not be ready to handle the drastic consequences that comes with pregnancies. That can potentially save a life from experiencing all sorts of emotions that may damage them in the long term future. Abortion is not as bad as you’d think it was and there are many reasons to back that up.

As previously stated, there are many benefits that come with pro choice, which makes abortion not that bad of a choice. Firstly, abortion gives women the option to do what she wants with her own body, therefore creates a more equal field between men and women. For instance, men biologically cannot get pregnant, which is unfair for women because both male and female are responsible for the outcome, yet the female have to take care of the fetus. In addition, what if the male left the female and lets say abortion was illegal, what can the woman do, if she was left to take care of the child all on her own.

That shows how abortion can provide an option to women who need it. For many women instead of pregnancy being “a privilege and a gift, these aspects of being female become an unbearable burden”(MIT Pro-Choice). Secondly, being pregnant “is a huge responsibility; one that not everybody can-or should take on” (Santacruz). Now pregnancy isn’t just all fun and games, it takes a lot of sacrifices and responsibility to raise a child. Most importantly is keeping your child safe and educated for many years on. To conclude women should have the right to do what they want with their reproductive system and people who cannot take care of themselves should most definitely not be able to take care of a child.

Some people believe that adoption is better than abortion, but I believe in the opposite. There are too many babies being put up for adoption, either because the parents can’t financially support their baby or they just simply don’t want to do an abortion and instead of taking the responsibility they would rather give their baby up for adoption. Too many people”have abused and/or neglected their children. When Social Services discovers these situations, they send those children to foster care. In foster care, a child may live with multiple families throughout their lifetime” (Santacruz). Kids who’ve been passed down multiple times to different families will be damaged and won’t have a sense of safety or security. Knowing that,” this can ravage a child’s life, and lead them to unhealthy habits in adulthood, like drug use” (Santacruz). Creating these bad habits leads to prison and most of the inmates are products of the foster care system, forcing them to help themselves when they age out of the system. Given these points, I’d say that the foster care system is worse than abortion.

Others would say that women who got abortion will regret it, which would then lead them into depression, but that just depends on the situation that they are in. An example would be if you are in a serious relationship and you are not financially stable, then you have an abortion, you may have some regret, but if you are accidentally pregnant then I don’t think you would regret doing an abortion, because having a kid was not your first motive. A study showed that “women who were denied abortions 'felt more regret and anger' and 'less relief and happiness' than women who had abortions. The same study also found that 95% of women who received abortions 'felt it was the right decision' a week after the procedure” (ProCon). The study showed that women were confident with their decision after abortion, because they didn’t have to experience the pain and overall was much more happier than those who refused an abortion.

Another reason to why abortion should stay legal is to not bringing kids with disabilities into the world where people like “perfect” kinds of people. Bringing kids with disabilities can cause them physical and mental harm while they grow up because they will eventually wonder why they aren’t like the rest of the world. Abortions can prevent horrible experiences that a kid should not be experience as a child. Some of these experiences are bullying from other kids, maybe neglect from others, and even physical pain from what they are born with. “Even in the case of nonfatal conditions, such as Down syndrome, parents may be unable to care for a severely disabled child” (ProCon). Some parents just don’t have enough money to support a kid with disabilities. In addition, some babies have severe disorders that will be a guaranteed death, which is obviously horrific for a parent and very disheartening, so in those cases abortion will be an option, so that the baby won’t experience major pain from its disorders later on.

There are some really bad side effects that come from abortion, but it’s not that concerning. The known ones are blood loss and sepsis, which is an infection. Firstly, blood loss is very common and will most likely happen to everyone that has an abortion. The reason to blood loss is because an abortion “starts a new menstrual cycle, so your period should go back to normal 4-8 weeks after your abortion” (Planned Parenthood). As for the infection a doctor will prescribe you some antibiotics. “If your doctor has prescribed antibiotics, it is important to take them as directed in order to help prevent infection” (American Pregnancy). Anything besides those that I have listed or cramping and nausea, then you should go see a doctor to make sure you’re clean and safe.

To summarize, abortion is actually a good thing because it provides a lot of benefits to women. These benefits include rights to her body, being more equal or fair with men, prevent kids from harsh experiences, and lastly help themselves become more relieved, due to the fact that they won’t have to carry out responsibilities that are life long, and can keep their freedom to be able to do what they love doing most, such as hobbies. For those reasons I conclude that abortion should stay legal because it helps by keeping things in check and doesn’t do much harm.
