Use the Network You Already Have

Networking is key in the job hunt. It’s important to build a relationship with someone in the career field you want to work in. People talk and people have connections. There are some HR staff who feel more comfortable interviewing or hiring a person who has been referred by someone already within the company. That person can vouch for you and nowadays, referral hiring is happening on a greater scale. Clean Your Social Media: Companies will often Google search a candidate before hiring, and yes, this includes going on your social media page. So if you have something on there that you wouldn’t want an employee to see, take it off. HR staff will often use your social media page as a way to get a feel for you as a person and eventually as an employee. For future references, if it’s questionable, leave it off the internet because once it’s out there, it’s hard to remove it.

Get That Resume Ready

Resumes are constantly changing as you gain more skills and experiences. And because nowadays, a vast majority of job openings are posted online, you will be using online applications where you can upload your resume and save it onto the site for feature reference. Make sure when you need to tweak your resume, because of a new skill gained or even an updated reference, you must always update your resume on the sites where you have it saved onto. HR staff can pull your resume from these sites and consider you for a position that you may not have even applied for. Always make sure your resume is up to date.

Be Open-minded

When applying, it’s rare that you will find a job that will check off your entire list of “what I want in a job.” Maybe there are a few things on the job list that you don’t like. Be open-minded to trying new things. It may be a blessing in disguise.

Don’t Doubt Yourself

You just graduated and the job opening you're eyeing feels more like a mid-entry level qualified job. Maybe there are a few skills you haven't mastered yet. Apply anyway. It’s a numbers game. Don’t sell yourself too short. If you're lacking a few skills or experiences, still apply because the company may have another open position that better suits you that you didn’t even apply for. Or maybe the company may feel they can still work with you and help train you.

LinkedIn Is the Place to Be

LinkedIn is like the Twitter for professionals. It’s where recruiters and employees all hang out on and it’s at the center for recruitment and networking. More than 90% of recruiters use LinkedIn as their primary search tool.

Don’t Get Discouraged

It’s a numbers game. It’s rare you will get an offer on the first job you’ve applied for. You may send out a handful of resumes and cover letters, you may even make it as far as an interview, and yet you’re still waiting for that call. People around you will say “Keep applying, the right job will come along,” but that can start to feel like a broken record. Just remember, you’re not alone on this journey. For every rejection, it may be because it wasn’t the right fit. It’s hard to not get discouraged, but remember, it takes time and sooner or later you will get that offer. Somewhere out there, a recruiter is looking for someone like you. If it gets to be too much like there is no end, allow yourself a day off from the job search. Then regroup when ready and get back out there.
