This story is about two childhood sweethearts, Monica Wright and Quincy McCall. The story begins in 1981. Monica and her family moved to Los Angeles from ATL and quickly became acquainted with their new neighbors, the McCalls. Quincy's father's name is Zeke. He was the star shooting guard for the Los Angeles Clippers, so the talent came to Quincy naturally. Quincy and Monica first meet during a game of basketball. At first, Quincy was impressed by how Monica, but it resulted in him angrily knocking her down during game point and accidentally scarring her face. The next day, they share their first kiss on the first day of school for 5 seconds and they end up fighting in the grass shortly after.
The movie then jumps forward seven years. Both Monica and Quincy lead their high school team. Quincy manages the court and other things very well and he even caught the eye of many prospects. Monica, on the other hand, has trouble controlling her anger. This causes her to put her team in trouble with technical fouls. Eventually, she overcame this problem, led her team to the championship game, but they failed to execute for the win. They came up short. After the game, Monica cries.
Down the line, Monica recovers from her team's defeat, and her sister Lena gives her a makeover. The makeover is for a spring dance. At the dance, in a dress with a new hairstyle, Monica is approached by Quincy. He compliments her and then he talks about her date. The jealousy starts to show immediately. Monica shows some too. Then they go their separate ways for the rest of the night. After the dance, being neighbors and all, they have a little conversation about their dates and then Monica brings up the letter about USC. She wants Quincy to open it, and he does revealing that Monica got accepted. He then tells her that he chose USC too. They try to congratulate each other with a hug, but end up kissing, and making love. That was Monica's first time.
Now the new couple is at USC as freshmen. They are still playing basketball and Quincy is still handling stuff on the court well while Monica is struggling to get her feet on the court. When she did show the coach what she had up her sleeve, the coach called her a show-off. This leads her and Quincy's relationship to struggle. Monica finally gets time to shine but Quincy is having problems with his dad and things, so instead of being happy for her, he blames Monica for not being around. They go their separate ways.
The WNBA has not been established so Monica is with the IWBA and Quincy is in the pros. Monica is home sick but decides to fight it because she loves basketball too much. She leads her team to victory at the championship. The story then focuses on Quincy who has been in the pros ever since he left USC five years ago. He now plays for the Lakers and tries to find his footing and when he does he has an injury: an ACL tear. Him and his family rush to the hospital and Monica flies down. She sees Quincy and meets his fianc©e realizing she still has feelings. Him and Monica meet up, get together and five years later Quincy and their daughter are watching Monica play for the WNBA.
This movie is a good story because it tells about love. It also tells a love story. Not only that, it tells about how you can have both, regardless of the problems you have individually. This movie shows that no matter how many obstacles or ups and downs you have I your life, it will get better.
