When high schools start too early, sleep-deprived teenagers are more likely to crash their cars. The diffrence between schools starting early and schools starting later changes the way students learn. It keeps students from doing bad things such as drugs and alcohol. Schools should start later in the day because it helps students learn better because they’re more awake. Being more awake allows your brain to function better and you remember the imformation you are learning a lot better. Well first off, starting schoool later in the day allows students to learn better. Starting school so early could keep you from learning and remembering as much information. “They found that students’ academic outcomes were strongly linked to the amount of sleep they had the previous night,” (O’Neil, professor). Getting enough sleep at night is better for learning than forcing yourself to stay up late at night to finish work or finish studying. Staying up late at night to study doesn’t always help you. “Sleep deprivation's effect on working memory is staggering," (Earnest, professor). Staying up late effects the way your brain leanrs and remembers things. Staying up late at night does bad things to your brain.

”When you try to learn something new after staying up all night, you probably won't remember it. Because, sleep-deprived people aren't able to retain new information. Pulling an all nighter to cram studying in for a test is actually a complete waste of time that is better spent sleeping” (WebMD). Staying up all night to study is actually a waste of time because chases are you won’t remember it. Now my second topic is starting school later in the day helps keep kids safer. Starting school later could help prevent alcohol or drug use and even suicidel attempts. A lot of the time for teens its hard to sleep early at night. Even if there just laying in bed in the dark without a phone or TV to keep them entertained. “Among kids who get less than eight hours of sleep on an average school night, 31.1 percent experienced depression” Stats. When teens stay up late at night because they have problem going to sleep early, it causes them to not learn and remember as much which can make your grades fall and can lead to students getting anxiety and depressed.

Do you know what insomnia is? Well its diffculty falling asleep or staying asleep even when having the chance to do so. ”people with insomnia have greater levels of depression and anxiety than those who sleep normally” Stats. A lot of teens have trouble sleeping at night which often leads to depression or anxiety. Now many people could argue that starting school later is a bad thing. Some people may say students wouold get home much later. Students who participate in sports and extra-curricular activities would get home much later in the evenings Stats . Students would get home really late due to sports and other after school activities. Its up to the student knowing they’ll get home later becasue 0f the sport or after school activity. The students aren’t forced to be on a team or do after school activities, unless there parents make them. Starting school too early could also be a reason for obesity in kids and teens. Many research studies have linked obesity to sleep deprivation in children and adults, Stats. Not getting enough sleep can disturb the balance of hormones that control appetite. So when your eating a lot and not getting enough sleep, it doesn’t give you the energy and motivation to exercise. Starting school later could also help prevent less wrecks.

A lot of time teens are still waking up there bodies and brain when they leave for school which couold cause them to wreck from being tired. A new study suggests that teen drivers who start class earlier in the morning are involved in significantly more motor vehicle accidents than peers with a later high school start time, Stats. If school starts later it could make them less tired and less of a chance of wrecking their vehicle. Starting school later could also help students have fewer mood changes. ”AASM reports that sleep deprivation leads to anxiety, irritability, lack of motivation and other symptoms of depression” Stats. Later school start could help with cranky moody teens that don’t want to get up in the morning. Starting school later could help improve physical health. ”Early school start times do not just affect mental ability and mood.

They also have an impact on physical health” Stats. Sleep deprivation increases the risk of diabeties, obesity, and high blood pressure. Starting school later would help students in many ways. I think school should start later for many reasons listed above. It first helps students learn better, keeps them safer, and helps them have fewer mood changes. Many people may disagree and say things are just fine with the time that school starts now. But then theres others that believe the many reasons i listed and have the same opinion as me on why school should start later.
