The themes in the movie Straight Outta Campton are relevant. The movie had been developing in 2009 and was released in 2015, where it is based on true events in the late 1980s and early 1990s of the rise of a rap group in America (Bradley, pp.141). It depicts various themes such as, brotherhood, racism, crime, and art that make the storyline of the movie more interesting. The movie talks about how persistence in the domain of violence and discrimination can be rewarding in the end. The movie has hip-hop genre and soundtracks that are used in the creation of it having a rap as part of the plot.
The theme of Brotherhood in the movie Straight Outta Campton is relevant. This is because the movie wants to show people that, individuals who are perceived and labeled to be gangsters are more than what they have been characterized to be, and in reality have humanity in them. The theme brotherhood is more apparent in the movie. The group shows support to one of their friends, Dr. Dre, who is informed of his younger brother's death, and the friends encourage each other by committing to be always brothers (Kristian et al. pp.30-32)
Another relevant theme in this movie is the theme of racism. The theme is deeply addressed where a lot of racism is taking place. It depicts how the hip-hop group, N.W.A, and African-Americans, in general, are oppressed. The oppression in this film is from the police where there is no just treatment (Haupt, pp.208). It is perceived that most African-Americans are criminals and gangsters. It is important for society to learn that one should not be judged by the skin of their color or what race they come from. The unjust treatment inspires and prompts Ice Cube to write and record the song Fuck tha Police.
The theme of crime is also relevant in the film. It shows how real-life events are happening (Haupt, pp.208-210). Violence is seen in the movie where Eazy is beaten up by Knight's thugs to release Dr. Dre from his contractual commitment with the Ruthless Records. There are numerous riots in the community causing harm, destruction, and deaths. Other criminal activities such as embezzlement of funds are seen. Heller embezzles money from Ruthless Records, and this makes him be fired by Eazy when he learns of his schemes.
Lastly, the theme of art is relevant in the movie. The film is mainly about the rise and fall of hip-hop artists and rappers. The theme shows more of the passion of art through music and rap. The gangster group N.W.A becomes popular with their songs reflecting on gangs, violence, crime, and oppression from the police. The artists use hip-hop as a tool to inform the public of the injustices happening in the society. It was the best tool to use to convey their message because it the genre is popular and widely received. Examples of songs done by N.W.A is; Boyz-n-the-Hood and Fuck tha Police.
It is clearly seen that the themes used in the movie Straight Outta Compton are relevant. They inform the audience and society of the real-life events that happened in the late 20thcentury. The use of hip-hop was well developed in the movie, using hip-hop soundtracks and genre. Most of the songs done in the movie are hip-hop oriented. The hip-hop in the movie addresses the African-American oppression and can say that hip-hop originated from African-Americans.
