The Adversity One Must Face when Fighting for Justice in Antigone, a Play by Sophocles
Society cannot escape contemporary moral issues. We are continually exposed to situations that bring into question our very system of beliefs. In response to these ethical dilemmas we are forced to adapt and reevaluate our present frame of mind resulting in both positive change and unavoidable struggle. Throughout the play Antigone, Sophocles clearly demonstrates the adversity one must face in the fight against injustice. One need not look very far to find immediate parallels in our own present-day society.
The central conflict in Antigone is very recognizable: the struggle of a strong minded individual in direct conflict with the established rule of another. In the case of Antigone this rule comes in the form of King Creon. The story unravels as Polynices, Antigone's brother, dies while attacking the city of Thebes. By order of Creon Polynices's body is left to rot in the streets, a seemingly fitting judgment for a traitor. Regardless of her brother's actions Antigone believed he deserved a proper burial. In her eyes Creon's power wasn't limitless. "I did not think your edicts strong enough to overrule the unwritten, unalterable laws of God and heaven, you being only a man." Unwilling to yield her convictions Antigone was found burying her brother and sentenced by Creon to die. Her fianc e Haemon, the son of Creon, discovered Antigone's dead body. Stricken with grief he killed himself. Upon hearing the news of his death Eulydices, Haemon's mother, also took her life. Creon, alone and responsible for the deaths of three people, finally understood his failings and weakness as a king.
The relationship between Antigone and her sister Ismene clearly illustrates two opposing views. Both women, sickened by the news of Polynices's death reacted in a contrasting manner. Regardless of the consequence Antigone was ready to protect the rights of her brother. Ismene, however felt powerless, filled with fear and unable to join her sisters crusade. Unfortunately this lack of control has a timeless quality especially when dealing with women's issues; the independence of women was not a popular concept. "Better to be beaten, if need be by a man than let a woman get the better of us." Some things have not changed. Women who represent such "masculine" qualities as leadership, aggression, and self-confidence are negatively labeled while those who act "feminine" are accused of using their womanly wiles. Ismene's reaction mirrors the self-perception of many women." but I cannot act against the state I am not strong enough." The lower value placed on a woman's worth is a continuous conflict. Although many issues are not resolved (pay equity, glass ceiling) together women are working towards equality.
Just as Antigone fought to right a wrong Canada's own Nellie McClung fought injustice with regards to women and the right to vote. McClung believed that the protection of women from spousal alcohol abuse and the exploits of factory work could be achieved the by gaining the right to vote. Determined to achieve this goal McClung helped form The Political Equity League in 1912. In an attempt to gain recognition for their cause a mock parliament was staged in 1914. With McClung as Prime Minister they spoke about why nice men don't want the vote; it was an immediate hit. With reason and humor McClung clearly proved women were capable of voting. In January 1916 Manitoba became the first province to give women this right. Part of the "famous five" McLaughlin managed the to raise a family, become a successful novelist and the first woman to sit on the CBC board of governors. Like Antigone, McClung's struggle was made that much more difficult due to the fact that she was surrounded by a male dominated society. Shrugging off intimidation, McClung bravely fought for the rights of women nation-wide changing the very structure of our society.
Struggle is not solely the realm of the individual. Recent reports concerning Gulf War veterans and forced immunization have resulted in a unified struggle for the right to choose. In light of numerous reports on the terrible and lasting side effects of untested immunization, the question "who makes the decision" is raised? Those who refused immunizations are being dishonorably discharged. It is plain to see that this conflict is just beginning; soldiers may not speak up because they feel that their jobs are threatened or they may choose to do so because their lives are threatened, only time will tell. Even an organization as tightly run as the U.S. Army can experience conflict from within. For many soldiers experiencing the effects of these drugs, the thought of challenging the U.S. Army and is extremely intimidating; a modern-day David and Goliath. Despite this these overwhelming obstacles soldiers have been forced to look out for their own best interests. Although the original purpose of the immunization was to protect, the secrecy and resulting medical problems cannot be denied. Perhaps the U.S perhaps the U.S. military, like King Creon, will learn the error of their ways.
The fight against injustice does not always take place on a grand scale. Small organizations such as the S.P.C.A and various pet rescues fight for the rights of those who cannot fight for themselves. A variety of reasons lead to homeless pets: neglect, the animal was a gift, it was not trained properly or it was too expensive to maintain. Whatever the reason these shelters are overflowing strongly suggesting something is wrong. Shelters are often left with no other choice but to euthanize the animal and depending on the method even that doesn't always seem humane. What are these organizations doing to combat abuse, neglect and disposable pet syndrome? Education is key; unfortunately this is too slow a process to prevent the many shelters from filling their cages. The S.P.C.A now has special constables able to investigate reports of animal abuse and lay charges if necessary. Other rescues find homes for all pets regardless of age or health considerations. Periodic unannounced checkups on the animals often reinforce the feeling that there are people who keep track of your actions. These developments may seem insignificant but if you've ever experienced a visit to an animal shelter the numbers speak for themselves. This is not a struggle of Man vs. beast but rather an attempt to ensure the ethical treatment of animals.
Unfortunately humans do not limit their cruelty to other humans. The protection of animal rights may seem minor in comparison to many contemporary moral issues, however, its relevance to Antigone can be understood; the fight against unlawfulness and the struggle for what is honorable and just. Sophocles clearly understood the influential power of the struggle between good and evil, right and wrong, the just and the unjust. Well over two thousand years have passed since its creation yet Antigone can still find modern-day parallels; the story stays the same only the names of change.

The Theme of Overcoming Adversity in Maya Angelou’s “Still i Rise” and Langston Hughes’s “I, Too” and “Dreams”

When I hear the stories of my grandmother, the things that strike my core the most is to hear the oppression and hate that she faced. Could you imagine? You would never know that she experienced these painful moments by looking at the joyful expressions displayed across this woman's face. The poetry of Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes is something that generations grew up with because, although it was written in trying times, there is a sense of pride and strength that that is consistently exhibited in their works. The poems that will be looked at in this essay are "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou and "I, Too, Sing America"/"Dreams" by Langston Hughes. The development of themes for these poems were based on the determination it takes to overcome adversity. The themes that are striking in these poems are strength, hope, resilience and overcoming challenges.
Maya Angelou was one of America's leading poets with multiple talents. Not only was she an amazing poet but she was also a historian, playwright, dancer, stage/screen producer, a civil rights activist and much more. ("Maya Angelou") Her memoir "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" made history as the first nonfiction best-seller by an African-American woman. As an African-American woman, she experienced racial discrimination firsthand as well as sexual assault. ("Maya Angelou"). She is an example of a strong, inspirational woman, rising from the ashes of spirit-shattering catastrophes.
For Maya Angelou, "Still I Rise" is a thematic poem about the strength and empowerment of a person during a certain era and even to this day. There is a struggle to overcome prejudice as a person of color and throughout the poem, she talks about the beauty and haughtiness of the speaker, laughing in the face of injustice, seen in the second stanza:
"Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room."
(Angelou)
This poem speaks about the circumstances of repeated wrongdoings that people of color face but there is always hope to cling on to. Although the poem was written during a time where there was a struggle with civil right issues, it is universal to any minority or individual that is subjected to abuse and oppression (Spacey). Any person that is looking in the face of injustice can understand the theme of the poem which is don't give up and don't give in. The last two stanzas help reinforce the theme of hope by "I Rise" being repeated in a mantra fashion (Spacey).
"Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise."
(Angelou)
While Angelou wrote this poem about overcoming the hardships of oppression, she used her words to influence others to use their voices to encourage change, believe in themselves and stand for a better tomorrow. The theme of resilience, dignity, equality, determination and endurance resonates throughout each stanza. There is much imagery in this poem, seen in the third stanza. She compares herself to the sun and the moon that is affected by tides. This could be symbolic for rising out of oppressing situations; rising up to stand against such things.
"Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise."
(Angelou)
The next poet, Langston Hughes, is also an important literary figure in poetry. ("Langston Hughes). Like Maya Angelou, Hughes recorded the nuances of black life and its frustrations ("Langston Hughes"). He was the first African-American to make a living solely on his earnings from his writings and lectures. He brought a variety of colorful experience to his writing since he lived in six different cities before he was twelve years old. However, living in the 1920s is a lot different than living in the times that we are in now.
In one of his poems named "I, Too, Sing America", there is the theme of overcoming the challenges of racial injustice and how they will not define him, just like "Still I Rise". Hughes makes the argument that he is just as American as any other person. It is also possible to say that this poem is a response to "I Hear America Singing" by Walt Whitman, who is one of Hughes' influences. In the opening lines of "I, Too, Sing America", the word choice is significant because the first word being "I" urges others to recognize his existence. The fact that Hughes' use "too" in the poem creates the idea that he is overlooked and not included in the song of America that was written by Walt Whitman. The opening of "I, Too" demands recognition and the need to be included in America's song. This poem embodies the history during that particular era during the early 20th century while Jim Crow laws were in effect throughout the South. The speaker of this poem refused to let the mistreatment and segregation define him. Even though the poem is only eighteen lines, it displays the themes about the culture, society, and history of that time. It also shows Hughes' point of view of the complex pain he had to endure from that complicated relationship with America.
In the poem "Dream", the message and theme may not openly discuss racial struggles like the first two poems, but it is still very relatable and connected to them. "Dreams" by Langston Hughes speaks about the hard struggles of life and personifies this as a broken-winged bird trying to fly and a frozen field. Even though this bird is faced with the challenges of flying, Hughes encourages readers to hold on to the dreams, hopes, goals, and desires because, without them, we have nothing to look forward to. Although the poem is only two stanzas, it says a lot with so little words.
"Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow."
(Hughes)
The first line states the purpose of the poem which is "Hold fast to dreams". The theme of this poem is about not giving up on what you want in this life. You "hold fast to dreams" and never let them go because if you do, life will be unfulfilling. Where would Maya Angelou be if she let the oppression get to her and she didn't laugh in the face of adversity? She held on to her dreams and did not let them go. The first stanza reflects on the death of dreams when they are put into an "if" scenario. The speaker indicates that dreams do not have die since they can be taken care of if held onto. The second stanza The theme in "Dreams" is shown through figures of speech or metaphors. "Life is a broken-winged bird/That cannot fly" - Hughes compares not following your hopes and dreams to living a life like a broken-winged bird which could be an unfulfilled, unhappy road.
The most interesting things I found about "Still I Rise, "I, Too, Sing America" and "Dreams" are the impact that these writings may have had in someone's life. Listening to the effect that Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou had on my great-grandmother and my grandmother made me realize the encouragement that is woven into their words. These writers not only inspired people of color for decades but anyone who felt like they did not belong in America's grand plan. These poems stuck with me more than any other poems that we read because I felt more connected to them because of the impact and history that they are connected to. Every poem has a background or history but the history of these particular poems are rooted in my own life chronicles.

The Theme of Overcoming Adversity in the Poem Caged Bird by Maya Angelou
In this analytical essay, a student discusses the theme of overcoming adversity in "Caged Bird" by Maya Angelou. The student explains how her family's move when she was in third grade exemplifies a time she successfully dealt with a major hardship in her life.
Can an individual possibly be so restricted yet free at the same time? In the short poem titled: Caged Bird, the caged bird is a metaphor for an individual making the best of being trapped in a cage despite the complete restriction that is evident based on the poem. The experience that is described in the text is a direct comparison to the experience I had in third grade, I simply lacked the authority to decide whether or not to restart socially in a different environment. What would I ever do in a city where I did not know a single pupil? When an individual is forced to deal with potential challenges, it can be difficult initially, but help an individual learn to cope with tough scenarios in the future and make the best out of them.
The poem begins by using imagery to paint the vivid picture of a bird that is free of restrictions, the author describes the joy of a bird soaring through the air in the first stanza. Interaction with nature is important for the free bird as it is not controlled with physical barriers. Furthermore, in the second stanza a second bird is described, this bird however has been placed in a cage with its wings clipped and feet tied, It is clear the bird is restricted physically. The bird displays action of hobbling through the minuscule cage that separates the bird from the aspect of nature that is cherished by the free bird. The contrasting stanzas provide the reader with the impression of the difference in quality of life of the birds based on their surroundings. Although scared and restricted, the text suggests with," For the caged bird sings of freedom." that despite the aspect of being trapped, the bird still sings with dignity. Having accepted the situation, the bird has learned to make the best out of what the poor situation has to offer. This piece of evidence in the poem provides insight into the literal meaning of the text. A metaphor is provided in the text comparing the caged bird to someone who is forced to deal with adversity and overcome it. Perhaps the cage represents misfortune and the bird singing as if it is free represents the gaining of courage to deal with the situation. Even if changes in aspects of life may seem like the end of the world, the individual learns to adapt because they know that if they let the dilemma get to them, it may be more destructive than accepting and making the best of the situation. Even if the individual faced restrictions, it is evident based on the text that they successfully learned to live without letting it affect their quality of life.
As a third grader, I thought that moving to another city would be the end of the world, would I ever learn to overcome this sudden dilemma? This all started halfway through the school year of grade three, I was finally feeling settled in my new house in Airdrie that we moved into a year earlier. At school, I found that I was creating strong bonds with some individuals and actually enjoying the experience of learning when I was with people who I can connect with. After class one occasion after telling my mother about my time at school, I noted that the route that we usually took to get home was abandoned and we were suddenly on the highway to a distant city. As we pulled up a small suburban house in a city named Calgary, I remember the feeling of distress when my mother told me we were moving again and my parents collectively made an offer on the house. The feeling of betrayal towards my parents, and thoughts running through my mind of all that would change, led me to curl up in the back seat of the car and exaggerate whimpering sounds in an effort to make my mother feel guilty. After several tantrums and the continued arguing about why we should stay where we are, I realized that my third-grade logic would not prevail and that this would be the restriction in this scenario. There was nothing I could do to cancel or even postpone the relocation of my habitat. I would lose all my friends moving to Calgary, have to start over socially after all the progress of meeting people. The thought of a new area and house made me sick to my stomach. Although these points sounded bad as a third grader, it actually helped me open up to more people and helped improve my social skills for the future. The experience was difficult, but I made the best of the misfortune and gained the courage to overcome the challenge. Before I knew it, I already was adapted to the new school, had new friends and got to experience all the good things about Calgary that I would have never known about if this did not happen. What I have learned from this experience about getting over problems has helped me have a positive outlook when dealing with negative situations. This large inconvenience for my third-grade self has made me stronger mentally, and not to mention I also became more accepting of changes that may have occurred since grade three or that are going to occur. Like the bird in the cage, I took something that was an inconvenience and learned to be grateful for what I have because I knew that there is no way to reverse the change.
When faced with challenges in an individual's life, it is important that they learn to not let the negatives conflict with their quality of life by making the best out of any situation. With all information being considered, an individual can observe that conflicts the bird had faced initially with being restricted physically, have aspects that are in direct relation to my experience as a third grader being restricted mentally because I lacked the authority to make decisions based on where we reside. The bird realized that because there was nothing that could be done to suddenly get out of the cage, he sang as if he was a free bird soaring in the wind. While I realized that I could not influence my parents with my limited knowledge so the only viable option was to accept the change and learn to be happy despite what happens along the way.

Looking at Examples of Resilience Through The Life of Pi, the Life of Jim Tehee Sr., and the Early Presidency of Ronald Reagan and Synthesizing Their Stories to Show How People can be Resilient in Their Own Lives
Resilience is the way that people face adversity and a way for them to keep going. People have been building resilience for centuries; some have risen to the challenge, and others have fallen under the weight of all the things that are happening to them. It is hard to tell who will rise and who will fall in the face of adversity. What we do in these situations shows the people around us and ourselves what we are capable of. Fear and pain are both elements that all people work through in their lives. Each person that I will describe had more than just a reason for surviving, they had reasons for living, something that is a far stronger drive than just survival. When people want to actually live, they put every ounce of their being into living and will do all that it takes to make sure that the people around them know that they are willing to fight for their lives, even if they know that the odds are against them. Working Thesis: I plan to examine resilience and how it helps people through adversity in different situations. I will also compare the ways that three different people, Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel, Jim Tehee Sr., and President Ronald Reagan, dealt with their individual circumstances in order to show how resilience can be used in the face of adversity.
Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel, as I briefly discussed in the paragraph above, faced tragedy after tragedy throughout his young life that could have easily made him give up, but he did not. While Pi was in his home country of India, he was bullied by his peers and his family, but he overcame this teasing every time. At school, the kids called him "Pissing" because his name is Piscine, which sounds like "Pissing.” The next year in school, he went up to the Blackboard and wrote "Pi" on the board and said that this was his name. He did this in every class that he had and from then on, he was Pi Patel. When he and his parents were confronted by the priest, the imam, and the pandit, who were each trying to push their own religion over the others, Pi tells them that he "just wants to love god" (Martel, 69). He took charge of his situation after the boat that was taking him and his family to North America sunk. After a few days at sea with wild animals on board, he to creates a raft as an oasis for himself from the animals, and this raft later provides food for himself and Richard Parker, an adult male Bengal tiger (Martel, 153). After Ella remarried a man named Charlie Tehee, the government found out that Ella was still practicing the Cherokee religion, so they had her murdered as well. Jim packed up his family, which was his wife and his two young sons, and rode by covered wagon to San Francisco, California. He eventually left San Francisco and moved to Kingsburg, California with his family so that he could buy a plot of land there and make more money. Three generations of my family were too scared to go back to Oklahoma, because they believed that the United States government was still out to get them, but they made the best of their lives in California and did all that they could to keep their families safe. Jim Tehee went through a lot in his early age, much like Piscine, and, like Mr. Patel, he still kept living his life and doing what he felt would keep him and his family alive in these situations.
During Ronald Reagan's presidency, he was under a lot of pressure from the people of America and from foreign countries. Foryt-nine days after President Reagan was inaugurated, a man decided to shoot him after he got out of a meeting. On March 30, 1981, President Reagan was coming out of a conference at the Hilton Hotel for the Construction Trades Council, when suddenly there were gunshots coming from the crowd. A young man named John Hinckley Jr. shot six times into the crowd, hitting a policeman, a secret service agent, President Reagan's press secretary, Jim Brady, and President Reagan himself. Mr. Hinckley had done these things because he had seen the movie Taxi Driver, fell in love with the young actress who was the star of the show, Jodie Foster, from the movie and decided to act out a scene from the show in order to prove that he loves her. The scene showed a man killing a U.S. Senator to save Miss Fosters character. (An American Life, 261) After President Reagan was taken to George Washington University Hospital, he walked in to the emergency room and, as soon as he was out of the news cameras sight, he collapsed. This shows that he wanted to make sure that people knew that nothing could stop him, not even this injury, which he thought at the time was just a broken rib that had punctured his lungs.
He was rushed into the emergency room and they began to operate. While on the operating table, President Reagan continued to make jokes as they operated, such as saying that he hoped that the people operating on him were Republican and telling his wife before he went into surgery that he "Forgot to duck" (An American Life, 260-261). It took an amazing amount of courage and resilience to keep on making people smile, even though he was very hurt. The bullet that went into President Reagan ricocheted off of his armored car and hit him in the chest and fractured a rib, and then stopping close to his heart. This was not something that you could just patch up with a band aid, it took multiple hours of surgery to help fix the damage that had been done by that bullet. President Reagan recovered exceptionally after his surgery. In just a few days he was up and walking around the hospital, though the nurses were cross about it. After 2 weeks of being in the hospital, he walked out in front of the cameras to his armored car, escorted by Secret Service agents. He had the drive to make sure that the world knew that he was alright and that he could take anything that came his way. President Ronald Reagan reassured the country and the world after he was shot that nothing could stop him, not even a bullet.
Each of these situations are tragic and crippling in their own right and had these people just given up, then they would never have been able to do what they did. My great, great grandfather moved his whole family from Oklahoma to California, like Pi's family tried to move from India to North America. Both Pi's family and my great, great grandfather's family were migrating towards a foreign place that they had no understanding about, but my great, great grandfather moved because he was told that he either left his friends and home that he has lived in for all of his life or die, while Pi's family moved for the prospect of better living conditions. President Ronald Reagan and Pi both faced hardships that got them hurt. Pi was thrown out into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean with limited resources and an adult male Bengal tiger, while President Reagan was thrown into the back seat of his armored vehicle and taken immediately to the hospital to have a bullet removed from close to his heart. In many ways, these are very different situations, but they both suffered through restless nights and days and they both went through great pain and tried to hide this pain from those who would interpret this pain as weakness and would eat them alive, figuratively and literally. Jim Tehee Sr. and President Ronald Reagan went through major road blocks in their lives and both were able to make it out alive. President Reagan and my great, great grandfather, Jim, both had people opposing them and they were both caught in life or death situations. Ronald Reagan may have been shot, but Jim's family was literally torn apart right before his eyes by those who wished for all of his tribe to disappear. These people had a lot of extremely tough situations that they had to go through and they did all of the things that they could do to persevere through each of their individual situations. They showed bravery and resilience through each of their plights and were icons to those around them.
In conclusion, each of these people showed that even in the face of adversity, they could be strong. They had many reasons to give up, and they did not. They used their unending will to live for their loved ones and turned it into something that filled them with hope that they could live to see another sunrise. They fought, they prayed, and they walked with resilience through every twist and turn that the world shoved into their faces, and they triumphed over each obstacle. In Kaffir Boy, Mark Mathabane does a great job of building the characters development and making clear the family relations. As we begin to understand the characters traits, we slowly understand the effects the characters have on each other. The conflicts between Johannes and his father reveal hopelessness about the families situation. He is a very traditional man who refuses to have anything to do with "white men". He said it was nonsense for a son of his to go to school and get a white man's education so he didn't have any interest in paying for Mark's schooling. But Mark's mother wanted so badly for him to be able to have an education even if it meant surpassing her husband's words. Mama Mathabane and Granny were a very key aspect in Mark's success. She had to get a job to pay for Mark's schooling but not the additional uniform. This caused Johannes to get beatings in school. At this point Johannes wanted to quit school. But as we know he has certain optimism mainly because of his education but he is also guided by his grandmother and mother to ultimately counteract his father's negativity towards him and continue school.

Many people feel that they need to be politically correct when they speak about disability and it's this urge to not offend anyone that has caused a sort off dehumanized view of the disabled. Society uses certain words like disabled, handicapped, crippled, etc. to define those with disabilities but all the words used only depict that disabled people are lesser or somehow not as whole as say a person who has complete functionality of their entire body and/or mind. Disability is an idea about the lack of something someone has and focuses on the "missing piece" that makes disabled persons not whole. Our language has set the foundation for that thinking and constantly supports the idea that disability is a setback and something to be worked through. In "My 12 Pairs of Legs" Aimee Mullins disagrees by stating, "It's not a conversation about overcoming deficiency, it's a conversation about augmentation, it's a conversation about potential." This statement opens a door for a new idea on how disability should be looked at, and that it is not at all a struggle to make up for a missing piece but instead a driving force behind using the disadvantage to create an advantage.
There is a pattern when it comes to the words used to describe and define disability and it is one of negativity, with no room to change. Mullins explains that language is what is limiting people from creating and evolving into the reality everyone craves and desires to have. This statement perfectly supports that language is preventing the transition into the world everyone wants and wishes to exist. The change needed is in the language that is used instead of what the language is being used to describe. This negativity around disability in language is only furthering the practice of dehumanization and lack of progress on the frontier of how disabilities are dealt with and thought of. Just as disabled people can change their deficiency into potential, the language itself needs to adapt and change to fit those it is used to describe.

My Cousin, Christy as the Person who Inspire me
In the past it seemed like fitting in was the most important thing in the world. I was embarrassed if my friends didn't believe the same things as me, and I didn't want to be thought of as different. It was hard to stand firm in my beliefs when so many people around me were criticizing them.
My cousin, Christy, has always been a role model for me. She's 10 years older than I am, but when I was young I couldn't wait for her visits to Arizona. Even though I have two older brothers closer to her age, Christy would always take time to braid my hair or color pictures with me. Once, when I was only 3 years old, I was wrapped up very tightly with my arms in a towel and my dog pushed me into the pool, and Christy was the one to jump in and get me out. She's the most humble person I know, even to this day she won't accept the fact that she did in fact save me that day in the pool.
Christy was raised in a family where most of the members smoked, drank, and were nonreligious. Christy turned out quite the opposite. She's very accepting of people the way they are, but she knows what she believes and she won't let people take that away from her. She doesn't seem to worry about people judging her for who she is. From watching Christy's behavior, I've realized that I too should be steadfast in my beliefs. I've learned from her that I can stand firm in what I believe without shunning the people that don't believe something different. She never seems quite happy enough with herself, but she will always stand firm in her faith and morals.
I've never seen Christy get angry with anybody! Even when her hairstylist showed up 5 hours late on her wedding day with no excuse, Christy managed to stay calm and understanding. She's so compassionate towards everybody. I've always wanted to grow into a person like Christy, but she can't understand why anybody admires her.
She's always looking for ways to better herself, because she doesn't think she's good enough. She's the most excellent role model any teenage girl could possibly have. She dated the same person for 8 years before getting married at the age of 25, and the worst she did to get in trouble as a teenager was come home 10 minutes late for curfew. In today's society it's easy to be pressured into doing things you're not comfortable with, but Christy has shown be that I don't have to fall under peer pressure to be liked and accepted by others. She's taught be that it's easier to be liked by simply being nice to people than by conforming to their ways and beliefs.
Christy always inspires me to be stronger in my own faith. In a world where so many people criticize beliefs that differ from their own, and attempt to make people devoted to religion feel inferior, she's always been a firm believer. One inspirational moment was during the spring of my junior year when I went on a church retreat with one of my friends and part of the retreat experience was getting surprised with letters from your friends, family, and even strangers. The letter I got from Christy influenced me more than any others I received. "I know it's scary to talk to others about Christ and you think it may be overwhelming for them to hear, but just remember: The worst that can happen is that they turn away from you. The best that can happen is that you turned them to God! Sharing the Gospel can be scary, but sharing a part of the amazing woman you are is exciting and invigorating!" The letter made me realize how selfish I had been. I had only cared about what people thought of me, and not how I could be helping others. Christy is always thinking about other people and what she can do for them. She is friendly with people of all faiths, and doesn't force her own beliefs down their throats. Christy has shown me how to be accepting of all people. I've learned that it's okay to spend my time with people who others might not consider to be worthy. I know now that I'm unworthy of all of the praise and love I'm given, so I should love all people as well. Christy is the most respectable person I know, and she's shown me what it takes to be faithful, honest, and selfless.

My Husband Revis as an Inspiration in my Life
"And will you succeed? Yes indeed, yes indeed! Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed!" (Dr. Seuss) This quote accurately describes my husband because he never gives up no matter what. In life when people sometimes want to quit and give up, Revis always keeps going. Revis never complains about life and always see's the positive in every situation. Whenever he is around someone negative he removes himself from there presence. Whether making good grades or working hard Revis's main goal in life is being supportive to his family and friends. This is why my husband is an inspiration to me. Revis is inspirational to me because he is intelligent, hardworking, and supportive.
One of the things that inspires me about Revis is that he is intelligent. Revis has always tried his best in school. Whether in high school or college, Revis has always made A's and B's. He stayed on honor roll the entire time in grade school. Now that he's in college his grade point average hasn't changed much. He has a 3.82 grade point average and is a member of the Alpha Chi honor society. He is the only person I know who doesn't have to study. While others are studying and panicking about a test he plays video games. Revis took the PLT and the Praxis Exam and passed both without studying. He took his health content knowledge test and passed it too without studying. Revis started off making good grades and continues to do so throughout his schooling. He could not have made those good grades unless he worked hard in every aspect of his life. Revis has worked hard at everything he does, and it makes him want to continue to be a better person for himself and others.
In addition to being intelligent, Revis is also a hard working individual. He is always doing something. He can't be still. His view on not working makes me feel tired and lazy. It is not an option for him. He is doing student teaching at Ridgeland High school and working at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. Revis just started doing student teaching in August of this year and he didn't know how he was going to do both. I still don't know how he does it because school is a full time job in itself. Revis manages to do both with a smile. He does student teaching from 8:00 a.m till 3:00 p.m and Ruth Chris Steakhouse from 5:00 p.m. till closing. On top of being in school and working my husband is also in the military. My husband did boot camp about three years ago in Georgia in the heat of the summer. Afterwards, he had to do extensive training in South Carolina for three more months. Revis was away for six whole months and never companied about being away that long. Revis works hard at everything he does and supports anyone who does the same.
Finally, the quality that inspires me the most about Revis is his supportiveness. He will support anyone who is trying to do something with his or her life. His friend Derrick needed advice on buying a car and called Revis to ask him for good advice. Revis gave Derrick great advice about the car. Today Derrick is driving a brand new car all because of asking a friend for advice. Revis does not just believe in helping friends with buying cars he also believes in helping his family. Revis's mom was going through a divorce and he moved her from where she was staying to a new place. He also gave her a car that was paid off so that she wouldn't have to struggle with a car note. Revis mom is doing well now because he looked beyond her faults and saw her needs. Along with helping his mom he also encouraged me to go back to school. I quit my full-time job at JC Penney and enrolled in school. I was a customer service assistant and I did not plan on making it a career but was scared to stop working because of the fear of not making my own money. I did not want to put a burden on my husband because I wanted to go to school so I stayed at a job I hated. Until one day we were talking and he said, “It's time for you to go back to school and I don't care if I have to work twelve jobs. You are going back to school this fall, of this year." I said, "Ok!" I am now a full-time student in college all because he cared enough to want to see me be successful as well. When I look at my husband and see all that he has done it inspires me to be a better person.
A husband like Revis seems very rare in today's society. Instead of being intelligent in today's society many people don't value education as much now. People have become accustomed to settling for less and barely getting by instead of going to school and working hard. He continues to work hard even when he doesn't want to. Revis believes the only way to get things in life is to work hard and do your best. He continues to remain supportive to his family and friends without even being asked to do so. I am blessed to have Revis as my husband because I know that through it all he is going to support me no matter what I decide to do in life. Every time I think about giving up on myself and school, I think about all he has sacrificed for us and it makes me want to do better every time.

The Great Influence of my Grandmother such as Inspire on my Decision to Pursue a Career as a Doctor
My grandmother has greatly influenced me, and my decision to be a doctor. One of her major struggles is that she suffers from severe osteoarthritis. She has chronic pain and has difficulty walking, but she is patient and endures the condition with grace. My grandmother lives in this painful state because she was not diagnosed in time when she was living in India. Although her condition is now being managed, I and others in my family can do little more than be supportive.She has inspired me to be an avenue of relief for people like her in my community, and possibly around the world.
I have had the privilege of living in and experiencing three, contrasting cultures. I was born in India, spent a large part of my childhood in Oman, and am since 2004, have settled in Canada. This has broadened my perspective and made me aware of how different cultural beliefs can affect the way health care can be provided and received. This understanding has made me more accepting and less judgmental about the diverse people around me.
Making a difference in my community has always been important to me. In high school, I was part of the Students' Council, volunteered at St. Joseph's Hospital, and worked at the St. Thomas Elgin Paediatric Clinic. As a medical office assistant at the clinic, Iwas able to observe the doctors at close quarters. I soon noticed the importance of patience, honesty and empathy. I admired the doctors' reassuring and supportive interactions with the children and their anxious parents. Working at the paediatric clinic confirmed my goal of becoming a doctor. I cannot imagine a more meaningful way to further my education.
As a university student, I volunteered at a camp for high-school students for three summers. During my second time as counsellor, I was awarded the Counsellor Appreciation Award for Best Counsellor and outstanding leadership. In June 2014, I was promoted to the position of camp Facilitator. I helped create the camp programme, organized and led campers through the activities during camp. This experience gave me the opportunity to grow as a leader, and hone my organizational and time management skills. I was also able to work with new people, and create bonds with that will last forever.
I have also been part of the Rotaract Western's executive team for the past two years.Rotaract Western is a university club associated with Rotary International. Through Rotaract, Thelped to organize the Juvenile Diabetes Camp. This camp is held for families that have children recently diagnosed with type-1 diabetes. I was a Children's Programme Coordinator my first year, and this year I served as a Head Co-Coordinator. Through this camp, I have gained an understanding of the problems faced by these families. I am proud to have helped sustain this resource for families in need. I have also volunteered as a counsellor and a tutor for the Learning Disabilities Association. I work with elementary school children with learning disabilities and behavioural issues. Working with these families and children gives me valuable insight on the medical issues faced by people in my community, and further inspires me to pursue medicine.
I have a first hand experience of how doctors can change lives for the better.I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome at a young age. I will forever be thankful to the team of doctors whoinstilled in me the importance of health during my formative years, and encouraged me to maintain it. Furthermore, I understand that being a physician is not only a profession that positively influences people's lives. It inadvertently makes you a role model for your community as well. I strive to be an exemplary one for my future patients and colleagues.
These experiences, among others, have refined my leadership, shown me the importance of teamwork, and exposed me to different people and situations that will help me be an understanding and compassionate physician.
I will be completing my Bachelors of Sciences this spring, and would be honoured if I had the opportunity to study medicine in Ireland. I will have built a firm academic foundation through my Honours Specializationdegree in Biology. This, along with my extracurricular and life experiences hasequipped me with skills that will help me excel in medical school, and eventually in the profession.

I have watched NCAA Division I wrestling on my bedroom television since I was a kid. I have always dreamed to be a participate in the big show, the National Championship. Just to get there would be accomplishing one of my life long goals. I have wrestled since I was four-years-old as well, and at times I have felt as if I wanted to quit and/or give up one that goal that I have been chasing since I was old enough to walk. Whether it be wrestling my older brother, taking on my father in arm wrestling, or watching WWF on TV, I loved the sport more than anything. The sport was mentally and physically tiring after do it for so many years. I would always have to lose anywhere from 20 to 30 pounds every wrestling season which would leave me discouraged. When I have reach these times where I wanted to give up all my goal I would always gather my thoughts and think about who inspires me. I realized that how can I possibly be complaining about how hard wrestling is on me when Anthony Robles wrestles Division I with only one leg? I used Robles's dream to form into my own. Robles's dream was not something that may have been reality without the work of one courageous man.

This advancement of black males and females would not have been possible without the dedication and visionary of Martin Luther King. Looking at the African American athletics today, succeeding with the amazement and skill throughout the various sports our nation provides, their accomplishments are remarkable.

Well Anthony Robles overcame an equally "mission impossible" task, winning the NCAA division I national wrestling tournament... with one leg. Robles knew accomplishing this feat was something that could only be completed with more than hard work and the determination of gaining the title that came along with winning NCAA tournament. Winning the title was a mark in history that would forever be remembered, just as Martin Luther King's rein was.
Anthony Robles may not of had the opportunity of achieving his dream without the realization of Martin Luther King's dream which he ended dieing for in a memorable fashion. The importance of the stand King took against the corrupt nation was something that changed the African American culture forever: not only athletically but socially. Anyone, that knew my grandma knew that she wasn't selfish she thought of others before she thought of herself. Ever since Alice first auditioned on the Televison show, I knew I wanted to be just like her. She inspires me to be a great singer just like other celebrities. I will never obliterate the interview she gave while she was backstage about being positive. She always had a positive outlook on life. She was even positive about the obstacles she ever stumbled upon in life. Alice is my real life hero.
Everyone has heard of the fictional character "Tweety Bird." Tweety Bird is my hero because he is always precise. While watching the cartoon, all I could think about was how positive Tweety really is. He gets through hard times and always gets away from Sylvester due to his positive outlook on life. I think Tweety had changed the world for me when I was about 4 years old, it taught other kids around me to be more involved. Tweety Bird also inspires me to try my very hardest until I one day, succeed.
A hero to me is someone or something that inspires, changes the world, and has a positive outlook on life. My Grandma is my hero because she sets a positive influence on me by teaching me the rights and the wrongs. Alice Frampton is also my hero because she inspires me to become the very best I can be. Ashton influences me to believe outside of the box. He is not scared to talk his innovative mind. I aim to be as open minded as this daring guy. Reynolds makes me consider the unimaginable and assume the greatest. Many times he has actually created me to believe beyond my norm; my ideas start to thrive and also expand much more extensive. Ashton when said to me, "learning more about God is as amazing as sliced up gravy." This quote made me wonder why in the world would he be comparing this type of finding out to gravy. Initially I assumed his declaration was blasphemy however as he described it I realized it stood. When it is cold, sauce is an unique material that can be cut in fifty percent. At which point I understand discovering God is additionally very special and also unique to me; as is gravy when it is cut in half.

Janelle Monae, the most Influential and Inspires Woman in my Life
Janelle Monae the Queen
Born December first 1985 Janelle Monae came into the world not knowing the impact she was yet to make. Raised in Kansas City, having role models like Dorthy to pave the way to her own dream. Singed with the Label Bad Boy in 2006, Monae finally got her big break. Sean Combs fell in love with her personality and image right away. Daniel Mitchell describes how her videos influenced Combs"[He] loved her look, loved that you couldn't see her body, loved the way she was dancing and just loved the vibe. He felt like she has something that was different- something new and fresh." Right away Combs could tell that she was something special. The first time I ever heard her voice was in 2010, in the song "Tightrope" had this new funk and soul feel that captured my heart. Monae has influenced me with her music, style, and view of society.
In today's music world the African American youth listen to morally wrong music. Music that includes stories of drug deals and the lives that have been taken away by violence. With teens listening to this all the time, no wonder society thinks we have lost our way. Monae has a different style of music unlike no other of her time. Behind her album The ArchAndroid she had legends such as Alfred Hitchcock, Debussy, and Philip K. Dick as her muse. Monae fills her music with soul and funk many artists today do not incorporate in their music. The words and rhythm of her music move me unlike the music of today. Moane's music shoes her own individuality, how she does not conform to society's standards. She does not wear revealing clothing, Monae is normally found in tasteful black and white suits. Instead of weave or hair extensions filled with unnatural colors her hair is almost always in a natural up-do. Her style in itself is something to look up to.
Look at Nicki Minaj's new video "Anaconda". From beginning to end the song is fetishing large backsides and skinny shaming women that do not fit that profile. Many individuals of all ages get the impression that this is what men like, what society likes. All women are beautiful, skinny or otherwise. Janelle Monae shows a very positive image for African American women and all women everywhere. Monae is seen more often than not wearing her signature black and white style. She explained her reasons to a Huffington Post reporter," It's a dedication to uniformity and I'm a minimalist by heart, but a lot of it had to do with me wanting to have a uniform like the working class, like my mom and my grandmother." She wants to fit into the persona of the average person, not letting fame corrupt her and being blinded from where she started. I admire the humility she shows for herself, She goes her own pace not falling into what the music business thinks it is best for her to conform to.
Society makes people think it is wrong to wear your natural hair, one is supposed to show skin all the time, but do not get too full of yourself or you might get accused of being pompous. Janelle Monae always has her hair in a statuesque up-do, never shows her body to get attention, but also corries herself with pride. Monae follows her vision no matter where she may end up in commercial success. Moane refuses to play the game media uses to single celebrities out. She always leaves a mysterious air about her no matter what question is being asked. Janelle Monae does not want to be classified by society, prying interviews and reporters do not stand a chance at stereotypes. Community and family are very important points in everyone's life. When someone gets a hold of the chance to be a celebrity they tend to lose a sense of family and community. She shows strength and pride many African American girls need to see in todays society. She inspires me to be confident in the way I am and to not let anyone classify me based on my personal choices.
Janelle Monae is very prominent in the music world, style, and her views of society. I have grown up thinking that things are supposed to be a certain way, that what my parents and family's views are is right. Over the years I have come to realise that my family has a closed view of the world, and that there is more to life than just fitting in. Monae has helped me come to this world changing realisation with her words and her music. For some it may be Beyonce', Obama, or Maya Angelou. There are many good African American role models in the world, but Janelle Monae stood out the most to me. She does things like go and perform with the street performers that appreciate her music. Women like her make differences in the world. I would like to make a difference in my world and community in someway or another.

Martin Luter King Junior, an American Baptist Minister and his Inspire on me
Martin Luther King Junior was not a name taken lightly in schools growing up. From kindergarten we are taught that he had a big voice and just wanted everyone to get along. What I didn't learn until my freshman year of college was that he was a minister before he was an activist, which is a pretty big key that tends to be left out. God led him on a journey that only he could walk upon.
We see this man as a social activist who put his heart into fighting discrimination against not only African Americans, but people from all over who have been marginalized and mistreated in society. He inspires me in more ways than one. His faith in God and his drive in what was right. His faults show me that even the imperfect can achieve the unimaginable.
Nobody is perfect, and I think we tend to forget that when we are putting these great historical figures on a pedestal. I didn't know until recently that he had a life with many ups and downs just like everyone else. You know the stigma everyone has about smokers? Automatically looking at the Walmart worker lighting a cigarette in the back, good things don't usually come up as a first reaction. For myself, when I go up into the dog park behind the campus for a smoke break between classes, I am astonished by the way people look at me. Some people avoid eye contact and scold their curious dogs when they approach me. I learned that King was secretly regular smoker as well, and I don't feel like he is any lesser of a person because of it... and neither am I.
When he was twelve, Martin tried to commit suicide after the death of his grandmother. His heart felt so much grief and pain that he felt like it was no longer worth it to see the day of tomorrow. When he is put so high on his famous pedestal, bringing him down to a humanely relatable level. A moment of weakness, a mind full of demons, and the devil himself telling you to give up, we have to ask, how in the world do I stay sane? And then something amazing happens, the work of god shines through your eyes and you see the stars in every direction. With his mouth, he spoke god's words for the world to hear him as God didn't make him a fearless man, but a courageous one. His faith in God gave him the strength and will power to fight for his people, for all people he felt needed a voice.
I learned about his March on Washington. When he first arrived in the morning, he was afraid that no one was going to show up, and later learns that the high ways were too jammed with busses on their way to the march. Young people, old people, people of all colors and backgrounds showed up with the same dreams in their hearts. This was the work of God, always ready to surprise us with his next miracle.
Martin Luther King Junior touched the lives of many all over the world, and quite obviously mine. He encouraged everyone to take a stand for what was right: equality. "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." As a young activist, he has reassured me that I what I am doing, what I am putting my heart and time into is for something I believe deserves my attention. He reassures me that as long as I follow my heart and God, the lord will bless me with the promise of tomorrow until he decides otherwise. God will not put anything in your path that you can't handle.

The Inspiration Work of Bobby McFerrin, One of the most Innovative Musicians and Artists of the Twentieth Century
Through research of his various musical endeavors, it is apparent that Bobby Mcferrin is one of the most innovative musicians and artists of the twentieth century. Mcferrin has never inclosed himself in the box of any one genre, and instead it is he who's fit genres into his own expressive tongue. By combining elements of World, Pop, Classical, Gospel and Jazz music - Mcferrin has created an incredibly unique and powerful voice for himself.
McFerrin's approach to singing and vocals is a brilliant mix of soul and technique. He has mastered the ability of switching swiftly between modal and falsetto registers, and because of this he is able to produce polyphonic effects and perform both the melody and accompanying parts of songs. In addition to this, McFerrin is capable of multiphonic singing - in which a singer seems to produce more than one pitch simultaneously, when actually generating only one frequency with their vocal folds. The last main technique that sets McFerrin apart from other vocalists is how deviceful he is with his own body - using his mouth and chest to create percussive accompaniment and effects. McFerrin uses all these tactics in his improvisation - as an established Jazz musician it's relatively expected that Mcferrin would be a decent improvisationalist, but, he took improv to a whole new extreme using such unique techniques. Eventually, Mcferrin began performing completely improvised shows, creating a far more interactive and personal experience for his audiences. It is In McFerrin's 1984 album The Voice -the first solo vocal jazz album recorded with no accompaniment or overdubbing for a major label- that all of these elements were first documented, and showcased him as a rising virtuoso.
The incredible thing about McFerrin is that even though he is often not accompanied, never does this cause the music he creates to feel lacking. As I said prior, McFerrin was the first jazz musician to start performing solely vocal performances with zero instrumentation and keep an enthused and consistent following: So, when he did team up with other great musicians such as: Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Yo-Yo Ma etc. a whole new side of him was showcased. McFerrin can imitate practically any noise but his ability to recreate the sounds of most any instrument is particularly uncanny. So, when he collaborates with other musicians he lifts the position of the vocalist to the flexibility and musical communication skills of any other instrument. When Chick Corea and Mcferrin collaborated for their live album Play, Corea walked away from the shows with this to say, "Playing these 6 concerts with Bobby has been a total joy. We chased the Muse each night. We explored nooks and crannies of our imaginations. We took each nuance and impulse as it came along and made them all live. We discarded nothing. We admired each other's offerings with no reservations. But the real magic was that the audience was part of the creation the whole way. Bobby's command of artistic communication is magnificent and inspiring. I learned a great deal from him about the art of performance." and Mcferrin in response was just as grateful, excited and modest about the experience - as he continues to be about musical collaboration.
As I said earlier McFerrin has dipped his toes into practically every genre of music known to man; through his repertoire he shows how incredibly versatile he is as well as how he can easily make a tune of any style his own. Mcferrin's style is nothing but "the new"; for a period of his life he didn't even listen to other artists and vocalists so as not to be pushed or influenced in one way or another. Not only does McFerrin dip into various genres, but he is a validated artists in all-winning grammys in both Pop, Jazz and arrangement categories and accomplishing positions like the creative chair of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and a guest conductor for symphony orchestras in both the United States and Canada. His style truly seems to grow and change as he exposes and challenges himself to new heights of vocal and conducting expression.
I personally, was first exposed to Bobby McFerrin on a kindergarten field trip to one of his shows; the memories are of course very vague but this was my first experience with such an innovative form of expression, and that absolutely held a lasting impression. I saw him once more on another field trip a few years later and was able to relate and take in a little more - I recall simply feeling the freedom and fun of the performance as though it was my own personal experience. Now, as a trained musician I can look at the absolute brilliance of his music while still enjoying the freedom and expressiveness in the same innocent manner I did as a kid. But, McFerrin inspires me especially because of his singing and creating purely for the sake of expression; he allowed for recognition but steered away from the egotistical claws of fame. Because of this, he never let himself be stopped by what was at the time musically popular, and he never felt the desire to stop evolving. He paved the way for other musicians to be obscure and expand the definition of popular music, and gave us great ideas and techniques to learn from and be inspired by and for that I am very grateful.

An Overview of Girls on the Run and their Inspire on me
someonThe organization that I chose to do my Civic Engagement Project on is called Girls on the Run. Their mission is to inspire young women to be the best that they can be and provide mentors for the young women along their journey, pushing them to succeed and reach high goals. Their goal is to "Build Stronger Women" and improve the confidence level of each individual girl. My role in the Girls on the Run organization is to mentor young women and give them someone to look up to, to be a role model. Everyone has someone in their lives that they consider their role models, for me it is my mom. She has always been the person to build me up and give me the confidence I need in a time of doubt. She inspires me with her passionate words and makes me want to achieve great things in life like she has done in her own. She is the Assistance Vice President of a financial insurance company. She has worked extremely hard to get to where she is today and has inspired me to do the same. I want to be this inspirational person for someone else. I want to be the person that a younger women looks up to and thinks to themselves "wow, I want to be just like her when I am older, successful, hardworking, and confident". Every young girl has a dream, I want to help those young women accomplish their dreams.
One of the big ways that I myself and the Delta Pi Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta here at Illinois State are active in this organization is by going to the 5k races that are held by Girls on the Run. Every year Girls on the Run puts on a couple 5k's that the young women in the program partake in. They train for weeks and when the race is finally here, we are there to run alongside them and support them throughout the race with inspirational quotes and chants that we shout to keep them motivate to make it to the finish line. Once the girl's cross the finish line it is so rewarding for them to know that all of the hard work that they have put into this has a great outcome. Some other ways that Gamma Phi Beta benefits this organization is by raising money to provide coaching and materials for these women during their training and for the day of the race. We have two philanthropy events every year, one in the spring and one in the fall. The most recent event that was put on by Gamma Phi Beta for Girls on the Run was a 'Sundae's on Sunday' event. On Sunday the 20th of September we sold ice cream sundaes to people in front or our sorority house. This event raised over $2,000 for Girls on the Run and it meant so much to the Delta Pi chapter to be able to give back and help support our philanthropy. Another event that we put on in the spring is a kickball tournament, were different sororities and fraternities come together and make teams to participate. Unfortunately, last year it was rained out but we were still able to donate about $1,400 to the organization from donations from other sororities and fraternities here on campus. This money then goes to, as I stated before, the coaches and equipment for the young women. Before the races there are stations where the girls can get their hair spray painted or faces painted, there is also stations to paint the girls nails and we also provided snacks and drinks for the girls during the race.
All of this would not be possible if not for the help of Gamma Phi Beta and others who help support this organization. The amount of time that I spent personally for this organization would be about a total of 20 hours so far. I was on the Philanthropy board for my sorority, which made me one of the many girls that have helped our philanthropy chairwomen plan the events and get donations and set up for the events. We would have regular meetings to discuss our next steps to make our events for Girls on the Run perfect. We wanted the best turn out as possible and we ended up having a pretty great one for 'Sundae's on Sunday'! I was also at the event which lasted about 5-6 hours, setting up and cleaning up included. I enjoy spending my time on things like this because I know that it is for a good cause and I believe it makes me a better person.
This opportunity connects to my major (business management) because it allows me to be a leader for someone. Having leadership qualities is very important in business majors, especially if you are looking to hold a high position someday. I hope to someday be a boss or a vice president of a company and this is a great opportunity to show the characteristics that I have and how I can use them to become a great leader and lead others into success. It also helps me with my future goals because it inspires me to do something nice for someone else and to be a true and constant friend to someone in need. Gamma Phi Beta and Girls on the Run have taught me so many great qualities that I will carry one throughout my life and utilize in my job once I graduate. Business Management can be a difficult major and every time something gets hard for me I make sure that I ask for help and find a way to improve myself. That is exactly what these women are doing here.
They are trying to find ways to improve their lives, but they are also trying to find a fun and positive way to do it. They are not looking for a shortcut, they are training to make themselves better, not just at running but as an individual as well. Some ways that technology relates to this organization would be their website: http://www.girlsontherun.org/. This website will explain everything that you need to know about the organization. It can answer questions about their mission, the history of the organization, who partners with them and some financial information. Other things that you can find on the website are the different programs that they offer and different ways that you can get involved. The last thing that stands out on the website is where the different offices are located for Girls on the Run. This is important to know because it lets you know if there is a location near you that you could potentially get involved in. The nearest one to Illinois State would be in Springfield. Gamma Phi Beta is also another great way for Girls on the Run to get publicity and help. Gamma Phi Beta uses technology as well to get the word out about our events for Girls on the Run. A couple weeks before our event, all of the women in Gamma Phi Beta put a picture on Facebook as our Profile Picture that explains what the event is and where and when it is located. This is a great way to get the word out, especially to people in my generation. Everyone now a days are always on social media sites, so it is a great way to publicize the organization. Along with this, during the events many girls will post pictures on Instagram and Twitter of them at the events urging others to come and join them in the fun. This is a great way to get people to our events to make our donation amount much higher.
To conclude, Girls on the Run means a lot to me and Gamma Phi Beta. We all work together to give these young women the best experience that they can get out of this program. I personally benefit from this program because it teaches me skills that I can use later in my life and it helps me become a better person. This class has helped me to appreciate technology more and to open my eyes to realize that technology is all around me, even more than what I had thought before.
