The Concept and Definition of a Legacy in Politics and Sports
What is a legacy? Is it the inheritance one leaves behind for others to use and cherish as they please? Is it just being remembered for something like an award or a trophy? Both of these are what some people would consider a legacy. A legacy is about going through the trials and tribulations to succeed and build something bigger than one's self; something or someone who should be remembered for their contribution to the world, or rather just their world. Inherited; some might consider that George Washington inherited the Presidency although he was elected by the people. Washington was elected to be the first President of our country because the electors of his day considered his legacy of success during the American Revolution his rightful inheritance to be the first President of the United States. A legacy Washington left behind as the first President of the United States of America was establishing the tradition of only serving two elected terms as President; his reasoning was to differentiate between the head of the United States and a monarch. This tradition was followed until Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected into the Presidency four times in the mid-1900s. Legacies can be made, destroyed, or altered, it just depends on who is performing. What else depends on a legacy is what others expect from those who are trying to carry on a legacy. In my own family there are several legacies to be carried on and acted upon, and I think that goes for many other families as well.
In my family there are several legacies to be carried on. My father and his father were both in the military, my cousin right now is serving as a sailor in the U.S. Navy, continuing the legacy established by my grandfather who was in the Navy during World War II, and the Air Force and Army following the war. Along with the fact that my family is mostly military, almost everyone in my family is from Alabama. My mother and father grew up in Alabama, as well as my aunt, and cousin. Not only do they live in Alabama, but everyone grew up with the dream of attending the University of Alabama. My aunt started the tradition of attending school at the University of Alabama and my sisters, Morgan and Julia, were both accepted into the University of Alabama. Julia graduated in 2014 and Morgan is expected to graduate in 2017. I will be carrying on the tradition of graduating from the University of Alabama, expecting to graduate in the class of 2020.
Along with my family's legacy at the University of Alabama, the university has a football team whose legacy of winning was established by coach Paul Bryant and continued by coach Nick Saban, arguably two of the greatest college football coaches of all time. The Alabama Crimson Tide football team has carried on greatness since the school's football team was introduced in 1893. Since then, the university has won sixteen national championship titles, third most in the history of college football. This most likely would not have been achieved however, without the help of coaches like Paul Bryant and players like Joe Namath. Both are considered football legends, one as a coach and the other as a player in both college and professional football programs. Since the two have departed, the university has acquired several more national championship trophies and will carry on the legacy left behind from these legendary people.
Along with those who come out of the University of Alabama, athletes from all over the world have come and gone and left their marks on history all in different forms. The latest is future NFL Hall of Famer, Peyton Manning who just won his second Super Bowl title. Manning is the first quarterback in league history to win two Super Bowl games on two different teams. This was his final time stepping on the field and he made the most of it by following in the footsteps of others whose last games were also Super Bowls like John Elway, Michael Strahan, and Ray Lewis. Although this feat by Manning is amazing, it is nowhere close to the best. Some NFL critics like Tony Kornheiser off of the ESPN TV show Pardon The Interruption would argue the best player of all time is none other than "the golden boy" Tom Brady (Kornheiser, 2001). The golden boy was a nickname given to Brady after winning a Super Bowl as a backup quarterback for the New England Patriots. His resume is far more superior than that of Peyton Manning; four Super Bowl Championships, three Super Bowl MVP awards, two NFL MVP awards, and many shattered records over his fifteen-year career in the NFL, where Brady was not even supposed to start playing until after the Patriots' star quarterback Drew Bledsoe retired. Bledsoe's horrific blood vessel injury in 2001 during a game against the New York Jets gave Brady a shot and he took it with pride. He would take the team to a Super Bowl victory that year against the St. Louis Rams. All in all, Tom and Peyton are both considered two of the greatest who will ever play football, and no matter what happens with either career they will both leave behind a legacy which will be viewed with astonishment.
These huge figures in sports history have left their mark on the game they play and the lifestyle they live, there have been others in American history to leave behind something huge; it is sad to say though, that most people have forgotten what he has done for the country because his name does not stand out as much as others from his time. His name is Alexander Hamilton, and he left behind something much bigger than himself which is still used today and was actually the basis for America's Constitution; Hamilton left behind the establishment of a National Bank with the system in place called the Federal Reserve System. According to the Federal Reserve's educational website, Hamilton was the first to urge the importance and idea of a National Bank which would assume the states' debts (2015). Hamilton was also one of the first Federalists, in the same political party as George Washington and John Adams (History.com, 2016). Hamilton did found one of the most preserved and successful businesses in United States history, but was often criticized for his scandal with Mariah Reynolds while holding the office of Secretary of the Treasury, according to the musical about Hamilton's life written by Lin Manuel Miranda (Miranda, 2016); this information is validated by the book Miranda used in order to write the musical, which was a biography of Alexander Hamilton written by Ron Chernow. The musical even captivated a segment about Hamilton's legacy:
"Legacy. What is a legacy? It's planting seeds in a garden you never get to see. I wrote some notes at the beginning of a song someone will sing for me, America, you great unfinished symphony, you sent for me. You let me make a difference; a place where even orphan immigrants can leave their fingerprints and rise up. I'm running out of time. I'm running, and my time's up, Wise up. Eyes up. I catch a glimpse of the other side: Laurens leads a soldiers' chorus on the other side, My son is on the other side, He's with my mother on the other side, Washington is watching from the other side, Teach me how to say goodbye - Rise up, rise up, rise up, Eliza! My love take your time, I'll see you on the other side. Raise a glass to freedom" (Miranda, 2015).
Miranda included this in the musical to capture Alexander Hamilton's final moments as he just finished his duel with Aaron Burr, his first friend and final enemy as it was anticipated in the book written by Chernow. Hamilton's legacy still lives on today in our national banking system, while Aaron Burr is only remembered as the angry Vice President to Thomas Jefferson who shot Alexander Hamilton in cold blood. This was ultimately Burr's downfall, which is portrayed in the musical Hamilton, "Death doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints. It takes and it takes and it takes, and history obliterates. In every picture it paints, it paints me and all my mistakes. When Alexander aimed at the sky he may have been the first one to die but I'm the one who paid for it. I survived but I paid for it. Now I'm the villain in your history, I was too young and blind to see... I should've known, I should've known the world was wide enough for both Hamilton and me" (Miranda, 2015).
A legacy is not only to be passed on as a chore as some would view it. A legacy is meant to be upheld, and to be cherished by many other generations to come. A legacy should be carried on with pride and should be something people look back on for guidance; for example, how Manning and Brady were able to be such successful athletes even as they near the age of forty, which is past when many athletes would retire because of the wear and tear their bodies take. How Alexander Hamilton was able to finally get his financial plan approved by the Congress and how his voice was able to be heard when he was viewed as too outspoken and too radical to be taken seriously. How George Washington was able to set the precedent for holding only two terms as President, which later became a law. How ordinary people like myself can start off small and end up being looked up to. What is a legacy? It is something to be remembered, inherited, and passed down forever.

The History and Legacy of Art should Stand the Test of Time
Here are two postulates. Postulate number one, art has a prevalent role and influence in society. Postulate number two, art is nonsense. How might one define it? To expand, how could art even be defined? There is no consistent agreement on the concept's parameters; it is entirely intangible. Is art a process or a result? Does art lock itself behind a lyricist's intention, or is it chemically released in the synthesis ofa listener's interpretation? Art leaves a lot more questions than answers, but what if that is the point? That is another invalid "one size fits all" solution, because many argue that art has no ultimate end goal. Art does not have actual practical applications. All of this begs the question, does art exist?
The short and easy answer is no, obviously the necessary factors like tones and colors are specialized for nothing more than gratifying certain primates through sensation. There exists no inherent practical function for neither art, nor its tools for creation. Regardless, realityis never quite so black and white once brought into focus. The cold, real answer might be no, but for all intents and purposes, the practical answer is yes. Art has had a very clear effect on global culture at large, or artists to be more specific. Its medium is very fluctuant, and artists' philosophies and fundamental methodologies often originate from abstract and wildly different inspirations. Each artist has his own unique approach to art, which will consist of three factors: format, purpose, and approach.Eras are remembered for their artists, then the artists are remembered for their innovations and outlooks.
Official eras of recorded history are often characterized by their art. It has unified lovers, led men to kill and steal, and can describe any facet of life as seen through others' eyes. When an artist takes elements of existing works and incorporates it with newer ideas, typically of various proportions and inspirations, then art has taken form. While there might be more typical or expected forms to every art, the most consistent thing about it remains to be its inconsistency. Inspiration and manifestation of artistic concepts and formats remain unbound to standards, reason, procedure, expectation, social class, culture, age, and opinion.
Ludwig van Beethoven was relatively considered a commoner child when he initiated his growth as an artist. His established format was music, having grown up playing piano. His father had marketed him as a child prodigy after having seen the success of Mozart and arranged for performances and tours on Beethoven's behalf. Being immersed in the music industry since childhood, Beethoven had a profound grasp on many complicated compositional styles and performance techniques. A few innovations from his approach to works include much lengthier symphonies than were typical for the time,more grandiose and loud epics, and abstract rhythm dynamics and fluidity. These styles were fresh to the ears of their time, and enticed a new wave of enthusiasts. Musicians followed suit and modeled after Beethoven's methods for generations. The 19th century signaled the shift from the classical era to the romantic era; catalyzed by one man.
Beethoven, also being akey philosophical innovator in the field of art, wrote in a letter to his brothers, "How could I possibly quit the world before bringing forth all that I felt it was my vocation to produce?" (45-49). This is his manifesto; he has declared his purpose to be a bringer of wondrous worksand awesome passion. He wrote the letter in a time of great personal despair, as he was losing his ability to hear. This was a time when he was most vulnerable and sincere, a position from which musicians did not typically profess from. Beethoven is one of the first historical figures to associate moral principles with the compulsion to compose music, and his influence on humanity has been a base-line for creators to come for many generations, even still today.
Beethoven believed that artistry was the act of taking universal truths and conveying them through a format of choice. One modern artist with the same purpose but very different format and approach is Hideo Kojima, who is a video game director best known for his epic science fiction drama series of stealth-based games called Metal Gear Solid. Older generations of people might associate video games with simple, unsubstantial entertainment and nothing more, but the advancement of video games as a format has proven their potential to be so much more than that, and this is highlighted with games like Metal Gear Solid as the format opens a whole new world of opportunity for approaches. The gameplay is integrated with movie sequences and in-game developments to introduce complicated ideas and themes, and it uses elements of player self-insertion and experience to land key plot points and emotional cues.Composed orchestral scores also to add to the texture of the whole experience, so gaming as an artist's platform has leveled with and even exceeded the depth of art forms like operas and movies.
The history of art has been paved by grandiose inspirations and revolutions. This trend is about to change for the first time in human history, as technology has radically broadened education and accessibility for the common individual. The best explanation for this development is the proliferation of accessible education and resources for approaches to art, as art has historically been predominantly at the disposal of the rare rich and well- educated with access to the also rare, handcrafted instruments. The current era is seeing a polar shift in proportion of artists versus non-artists for the first time in history, as mass production and widespread information havepaved the way for the common person to easily become an artist of any variety. Format for art has plateaued into a virtually unlimited canvas thanks to individually accessible digital manipulation. Thusly, an individual's approach is conversely also made unlimited. Given that the potential for artists has generalized so tremendously, the wildly various purposes for making music will rapidly come into light among the masses. So art, in its, entirety has been made unlimited.
There is absolutely no real data to conclude what could possibly occur for art in first world civilization. The trend used to be that only the few creators represented the times, not solely based on talent but more so the alignment of circumstances. Now products from the pool of artistic genius are being diluted into drops in an ever-increasing bottomless ocean.
There already exists more music than possibly can be heard over a hundred lifetimes, which desperately begs the question: will art endlessly satisfy its legatees, or will it lose its luster into a void of an infinite and unreachable expectation?

The Legacy of Ludwig Van Beethoven, a Genious Composer
Ludwig van Beethoven (baptized December, 1770 - March 26, 1827) has lasted as a familiar name due to his role in the transition between the Classical and Romantic musical eras. Alongside the impact his "musical genius" has had on composers of subsequent generations. Born in Bonn, Germany, Beethoven first developed his musical skills under the guidance of nearby musicians. However, after a time, Beethoven moved to Vienna to study under Haydn, where he (after other travels) eventually died.
In Bonn, Beethoven received early training from his father, Johann van Beethoven, and Christian Gottlob Neefe. Beethoven's father, along with other teachers, helped Beethoven learn multiple instruments, and Neefe helped Beethoven developed his compositional skills. In additional to receiving support through instruction, Beethoven developed relationships to support his success as the health of his parents declined. Count Ferdinand von Waldstein, a German nobleman, became a close friend of Beethoven's and remained so throughout their lives. In Vienna, many noblemen offered Beethoven financial support to continue his studies there.
Though the transition between teachers from Bonn to Vienna and eventual success may create the impression that Beethoven lived an easy life with a straightforward path to success, this could not be further from the truth. When his mother died early in his life and his father became an alcoholic, Beethoven grew to take care of his brothers, spending five years in Bonn for their caretaking. Later in life, a slow loss of hearing appeared as though it could significantly influence Beethoven's musical career. And the final loss inarguably impacted Beethoven's ability to enjoy music. However, Beethoven continued composing despite his loss of hearing. In his life, Beethoven also faced issues stemming from his class and his relationships. Being unable to keep custody of his brother's son due to class, and being unable to keep a relationship with a woman of a higher class. In the light of Beethoven's struggles, many historians respect Beethoven's ability to continue writing successful, genius music.
While some of Beethoven's works have slowly dropped out of the public's common knowledge, a few of his pieces are still recognizable by the common fellow on the street. For example, within the first measure of Beethoven's Sinfonia Eroica, most can surely acknowledge its familiarity. Other pieces Beethoven has composed that remain familiar are the Coriolan Overture, his Ninth Symphony, Fifth Symphony, and to some, Fidelio.
Beethoven's works, name, and skill have left a mark on music for years to come. Museums have been built in his honor, and his music is still performed by ensembles of every size, from school groups to professional symphonies. The Voyager spacecraft even features Beethoven's music, used as an example of humankind's culture, were intelligent life to every come across the craft. Beethoven has a legacy that is difficult to match; over two hundred years later, we still listen to his music every day.

The Legacy of the German Expressionist Choreographer Kurt Jooss
Kurt Jooss is a major player in the history of dance. With his dance style he aids the further evolution of dance composition, how one perceives dance, and what people call dance. The German choreographer thrived in the age of Expressionism, a new art form that was certainly avant-garde at the time. He led, with the help of other dancers like his student Pina Bausch, the spread of this new idea into the dance realm by creating original works that are still well known today, like his The Green Table. They pioneered a new form of dance, Tanztheater, which was innovative and paved the way to a broader spectrum of how to analyze and define dance. Jooss' legacy is vital to dance history because he brought to light another new and inspiring style, further expanding what dance truly is.
The Expressionist movement originated in Germany in the early twentieth century as a part of the more expansive modernist movement. Expressionism's focus was inner emotion, and its subcategory of dance harnessed the "...technique of distilling a state of feeling" (Kisselgoff). This is the age in which Jooss began to become a prominent dance figure; his choreography broke away from the normal ballet constructions at the time, like telling a story or showcasing art for art's sake. His Expressionist influence guided him towards the creation of works that "present the moral and psychological dilemmas of modern man in allegorical guises" (Siegel 17). In other words, his ability to fabricate art that "embod[ies] the reality below the surface," or true inner-human emotion, through indirect and artistic means, is truly innovative (Kisselgoff).
Jooss was interested in every aspect of the stage that could be utilized to enhance a performance of his; total theatrical production became a staple of his work. According to Ana Sánchez-Colberg, his "choreographic vision is a synthesis: of diverse dance forms, of diverse dancers, of diverse theatrical elements" (16). This created juxtaposition that beckoned Jooss' audiences to reflect on themselves and the movement they experienced. This new focus of dance, with Jooss as the pioneer, became known as Tanztheater, which literally translates from German to dance theatre. This "form that blends dance and everyday movement with theatre, speech, music, and clever use of props and sets" is the commencement of a new lens through which to consider and spectate dance; it does not tell stories as classical narrative ballets do, but "tells of experience, reminds us of sensations or feelings and chimes with our own memories" (Winship). Jooss took dance, mixed it with theatre, and created a new outlet of artistic expression.
Jooss, in a way, strengthened Expressionism in the dance realm by creating a name for it (Tanztheater) through his work and the work of his students, but eventually, his new developments in the art pushed the era into the past to make room for a new one that he pioneered. He began in the Expressionist era, but concluded it in the dance realm with his special choreography. He began to abandon "the cult forms of the early 20's, establishing his dancers onstage as people wearing everyday clothing," for example (Kisselgoff). He was disinterested in portraying superhuman characters that appeared to float and flit around the stage, and appreciated the use of weightiness in movement. Realism became the key factor in his characters' self-portrayals; therefore he made his principal dancers appear exaggerated "beyond psychological realism, but... destabilized by [their] humanness" (Elswit 82). For example, in the opening scene of The Green Table, the diplomats, or the Gentlemen in Black, discuss political affairs while performing dramatic jumps and hand gestures, utilizing the infamous table as a centerpiece and support prop. These fantastical movements seem unrealistic, yet their humanly figures and the political context in which the piece takes place creates a sense of normalcy. Jooss began to favor complete theatricality by combining elements of fantasy and reality.
Tanztheater was a result of a great mind's frustration with old dance forms. Kurt Jooss yearned for a new way to present to audiences new and beautiful ways to move. He channeled this desire of artistic rediscovery and combined two distinct avenues to merge "positive aspects of ballet technique with those of the new dance [to combine] free personal expression and formal compliance" (Sánchez-Colberg 4). Jooss also believed that dance must evolve with the times; all political and social movements that traditional dances portray are now a part of history, as the dances themselves should be. He stated, as quoted by Sánchez- Colberg in Markard, that in order to make dance and theatre effective political/social critics, "the dance world of today must... [satisfy] the need of the theatre on one hand, but... working unceasingly on the overall idea of dance theatre" (4). Jooss' choreography is never meaningless nor superficial; its significance is always profound. In The Green Table, Jooss comments on the pointlessness, hopelessness, and terror of war through scenes depicting conflict, death, and sorrow. A message can be delivered through various methods and media; Jooss strived to advance dance and theatre together to continue its potentially didactic achievement.
Jooss' Tanztheater was nothing before seen in dance history, which thus makes it an avant-garde release for profound human expression. In addition to it adding theatre elements to dance performance, each movement presented in his works must have serious meaning. According to Jooss, who, in an interview with John Gruen as quoted by Sánchez-Colberg, said, "there is no movement... without a psychological background, and no psychological tension without resulting movement" (1976). The Green Table exemplifies this throughout its entirety; there is a reason for every movement made by each diplomat in the first scene, and the resulting war causes the character of Death to haunt every scene thereafter. His choreography focuses on human condition as a result of human affairs; his dancers' body movement henceforth conveys to audiences truly deep meanings about intense topics (like the misery of war.)
The way in which Jooss dealt with his pieces' roles and scene orders were also innovative in that he allowed them to come together themselves. That is, the performers and audience develop them both from their own unique perspectives. Jooss strived to give his dancers opportunity to express themselves as individuals: "In my production the roles are only partly written... I indicate to the artists what I wish [them] to convey to [their] audience and allow [them] to improvise and give from his own emotions" (Jooss, as qtd. by Sánchez- Colberg, 1933). In addition, the choreographer also ordered the scenes of his works as a series or a montage, disregarding realistic time lines. Jooss did not simply combine dance and theatre, he created a completely new method, process, and form of approaching them.
It is clear that Kurt Jooss has become an important individual to dance history due to his fresh take on artistic expression. His legacy is best seen through his most famous work, The Green Table; this emotional critique on the effects of warfare truly defines a piece of Tanztheater. Personified death and its reminder that it is inevitable (the archaic idea of mememtomori) are prominent in this unique ballet; its impact on the human race brings Jooss' goal of analyzing and revealing heartfelt emotion of the human race. His topic choice was very problematic at the time in which he choreographed The Green Table; it was "during a time when dance was undergoing dramatic upheavals," especially in Germany during the Nazi regime (Elswit 75). Some Nazi opinions were that the piece was propaganda against the Geneva Convention (which, for Nazis, was a good thing), while others believed it was detrimental towards their fighting spirit.Rising tensions in Europe drove him to critique the happenings in his own special way, which was not even the reason why he was forced to flee his homeland. The Nazis forced him to dismiss the Jewish dancers in his company, and he refused.
This ballet was not lighthearted and cheery as seen in past renown classical ballets, and did not deal with seemingly superficial topics. In an interview with Robert Joffrey, Jooss stated that it played with "the dance of death altogether... [and] an accumulation of inside that a new war was going to be prepared" (uploaded 2012). Death certainly was not a common topic of dance expression at the time, which led to it leaving its mark on history. The "essential human truth" depicted engaged "the topos of death where the... mortality.... directly impacted [the dance's] display" (Elswit 79). This complexity of the topic intertwining with the dance itself truly defines Jooss' Tanztheater, making the genre infamous.
Proof that the German choreographer's legacy is eminent in dance history is clearly visible through choreographers that have come and created after him. His student, Pina Bausch, for example, succeeded him and continued the magic of Tanztheaterthrough her Wuppertal Tanztheater in the 1970s. Audiences "were perplexed by the amalgamation of diverse elements, not all coming from dance, which gave the production its distinct characteristic" (Sánchez-Colberg 1). Although Jooss and Bausch are closely related to Tanztheater, other choreographers throughout the century were definitely influenced by the movement during the modern dance and contemporary ballet periods more broadly. According to Sánchez-Colberg, "Jooss was first to bring to dance a focus on the body/the dancer" (5). Person, space, and movement all came together in Jooss' works, as did many of the acclaimed modern dancers that came after him.
Kurt Jooss broke away from the norms of dance by straying from story ballets and works with no meaning. Beginning in the era of Expressionism, Jooss created Tanztheater, a genre of dance that combined theatrical and dance elements that would inspire and influence future pioneers of modern and contemporary dance forms. Like all noteworthy choreographers, Jooss achieved in broadening the forever evolving definition of dance by creating a whole new perspective. One can see Jooss' dance theatre legacy lives on today through companies like Lucky Plush, who also consider themselves dance theatre performers. Sánchez-Colberg states that:
Jooss sought wisdom about our human condition - for himself as an artist, for his ensemble, for the audience, for the dance world; though the means and methods of dance; attempting to draw us closer to the fundamental questions about ourselves in the world, questions that remain open-ended to this day (11).
Jooss' pieces, especially like The Green Table, get the audience thinking about the underlying message that the choreographer is attempting to convey. His critiques on the human condition are didactic indeed; he does not want spectators to just be entertained, he wants them to be influenced. He hopes that one is so moved by his work that they will do something to change the hardships his dancers depict.

The Legacy of Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin
All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
For centuries the words of William Shakespeare's character Jaques in As You Like It have resounded with audiences and readers. Surely these words also resounded with philosophers, writers, and great thinkers such as Benjamin Franklin or F. Scott Fitzgerald. Because Franklin spent the vast majority of his life immersed in literature of diverse forms, it has become almost impossible to view his Autobiography as nothing more than a historical document. Taking into account Franklin's massive corpus of writing which he had already established before the first part of Autobiography was written in 1771, to assume that he had not carefully crafted his own representative character would be foolish. Though based on true experience, Franklin's presented self is as meticulously measured and created as Shakespeare's Jaques or Fitzgerald's Gatsby, with the purpose of giving Franklin a greater deal of control over his legacy.
Great writing is very much the art of selective imitation. Franklin, on the very first page of his narrative, presents the idea that he has recorded his life story because his posterity may find some of it "fit to be imitated," (Franklin 935). Poor Richard might agree that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery; indeed, Franklin flatters himself by suggesting that his life is worthy of imitation. However, most would not be so bold as to contradict this claim. He even humanizes himself by admitting to such vanity. To call Franklin a solely vain man, based on his self-representation in Autobiography, would be to do him an injustice, as he also gives examples of his prudence and humility in the narrative.
Accounting the events of Franklin's early life serves to elevate his accomplishments by highlighting his humble beginnings. His presentation of young Benjamin Franklin striking out on his own bears a certain pathos whose rhetorical purpose is open to interpretation. Seventeen- year-old Franklin, spurned by his brother, James, and scorned by his home town of Boston, Franklin's choice to go it alone is a powerfully emotional one. Coming after and account of being beaten by James, Franklin takes the moral high ground by reserving judgement upon his brother, saying, "Perhaps I was too saucy and provoking," (Franklin 948). This seeming reservation is evocative of two other characters from history which in section three of Autobiography Franklin claims as singularly worthy of imitation: Jesus and Socrates.
Through careful diction, Franklin maintains himself throughout Autobiography as a picture of restrained judgement. Similarly, as Nick Carraway on page one of chapter of "The Great Gatsby" says of himself, "I'm inclined to reserve all judgements," (Fitzgerald). However similar to the character of Carraway Franklin's constructed self may be, a strong case could also be made that he shares much in common with Jay Gatsby.
Both Franklin and Gatsby were very organized in the attainment of their goals early on in life. On page 944 of Autobiography, Franklin gives account of his methods of study and the daily schedule in which these activities took place. A reader cannot help but draw a parallel between that description and the fictional account of Gatsby's daily planner. The similarities end when Gatsby fails to fulfill his ultimate goals after resorting to dishonest means of acquiring wealth. Conversely, Franklin describes how he gained recognition from the Governor of Pennsylvania through his own merits.
Humility and the organization of personal motivation were only two of the manifold qualities Franklin chooses to describe himself to possess. "His life history can in fact be told in summary as an enumeration of virtues and their effects," (Seavey 94). Reading Autobiography through this lens lends itself to the study of how Franklin uses his own personal narrative to demonstrate the efficacy of the application of the virtues which he claims to subscribe to.
Another of Franklin's described virtues, one which has almost totally fallen out of grace in America, is frugality. By cutting his diet down to simple necessity, a sixteen year old Franklin had excess money with which he could buy books. "Dispatching presently my light Repast... I made greater Progress from that greater Clearness of Head and quicker Apprehension," says Franklin (944). This early display of thrift gives credence to his claim of having been able to purchase books on logic, grammar, rhetoric, and importantly, Locke's Human Understanding. The Franklin family was certainly not well to do, so Franklin's frugality serves as an explanation as to how he was able to better educate himself and rise above the status of his tradesman-oriented family members.
Franklin then depicts himself as a young soldier of the Enlightenment, armed to the teeth with the tools of learning, both new and Classical. Attempting to emphasize the wisdom of his reservation with words at the time of writing "Autobiography", he tells of how in his younger days he used to take delight in practicing the Socratic Method in order to frustrate his superiors. Forsaking this practice of his younger days, Franklin then presents readers with an important tenet of his philosophy regarding conversational subtlety. If men should be taught as if you taught them not, then he has implanted the idea in the head of the reader that the perusal of "Autobiography" should be an educational experience. So, Franklin has declared himself an example, shaping how he should be remembered as an educator, all while taking the guise of an old man who has earned the right to indulge the inclination to ramble about the past. In this way he manages to establish authorial distance even when writing about his own life.
Painting himself deftly as a character within the context of an interesting narrative makes Franklin's Autobiography sometimes read like a good novel. This quality is what makes the work, as The Cambridge Companion to Benjamin Franklin says, "Understood as a significant literary performance, amenable to all kinds off literary theory... and resistant at all turns to any kind of oversimplified reading" (Arch 169). Of much importance is the affinity displayed on page 949 for John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and other early forms of the novel. In fact, "[Franklin's] first Collection was of John Bunyan's Works, in separate little volumes" (Franklin 941). His early enchantment with fictional literature was a quality which he fostered for the rest of his living days, rather than letting it die out to be replaced by extensive knowledge of Law like some of his contemporaries may have done.
Imagination and vision, given direction by his studies of Enlightenment ideas, gave Franklin the ability to greater view himself in the context of his age. Franklin's perspective, his ability to be both within and without, shows clear awareness of his role as a character on the stage of life. Through writing Autobiography, he took the primary role as sculptor of his own place in history by selectively choosing and portraying which of the many events of his life should be remembered by posterity.

The Life and Legacy of Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian
The One True King
Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian, or Augustus is one of history's most interesting people. He was presented an entirely unique opportunity, the likes of which we are never like to see again. Octavian, as he was known at the time, was a nephew of the then dictator of Rome, the infamous Julius Caesar. As a child, he lived with his mother and father, and led the life of an average Roman citizen. In 44 BCE, when Octavian was only 19, Julius Caesar was assassinated by Brutus and Gaius Cassius. To the surprise of his family, Julius Caesar named Octavian his son and heir in his will. Octavian took on Caesar's name, officially becoming Gaius Julius Caesar Octavius. This was the year his life truly began, and he would go on to become Rome's greatest leader and the man who changed it forever.
Octavian's story, however, does not start with him. Julius Caesar, his adoptive father, had been toying with dictatorship for years. He had been appointed dictator at different points, even being named dictator for ten years after his victory over Pompey. In 44 BCE, he declares himself "dictator for life", in an unknowingly successful attempt to abolish the republic. He only enjoys being dictator for a few weeks, however, because on March 15 (a date forever immortalized) he is assassinated. A group of approximately 30 senators, led by Gaius Cassius and Caesar's closest friend, Marcus Junius Brutus, rush Caesar while he speaks at the podium and stab him to death. His assassination, to me, is actually sort of poetic- because of the massive amount of wounds, determining which knife actually dealt the killing blow is nigh impossible, resulting in a shared blame for the conspirators. The motive is pure-or, it would have been for the conspirators. They had no desire for power, or wealth. The conspirators assassinated Julius Caesar for what they believed to be the good of all Rome. Caesar's final words, in Greek, were kai su, teknon? This translates roughly to "and you too, child?" Marcus Junius Brutus, one of the purported leaders of the conspirators, was Caesar's closest friend and protégé. Caesar, and his last words, were immortalized by Shakespeare, the key difference being that in the play Julius Caesar, the titular Caesar's last words were Et tu, Brute?, meaning 'and you, Brutus?' This phrase has been made into an idiom over time, used to signify betrayal, especially by a close friend. Octavian's inheritance, and his new identity, were unknown until the reading of Caesar's will. Octavian's parents advised him to refuse the inheritance, but he did despite their advice. Octavian took on his adoptive father's name, and became Gaius Julius Caesar Octavius. He would go on to form the Second Triumvirate with Marc Antony and Marcus Lepidus to hunt down his father's killer.
Augustus was uniquely suited to be emperor. Where Julius Caesar was domineering and warlike, Caesar Octavius was charismatic and clever. He treated the people like his children, being kind and considerate while also planting seeds of doubt against his enemies. For example, Caesar's will included a sort of stimulus- 300 gold to be paid out to every Roman citizen after Caesar died. Marc Antony took the money for this stimulus and used it to fund conflict in Egypt. While Antony was away, Caesar Octavius held an assembly, announcing that not only had the villain Antony stolen the people's inheritance, but that he, the rightful Julius Caesar, would pay them their 300 gold out of pocket, as their ruler had always intended. This was a perfectly Augustine thing to do- he used only his own wits and his resources to simultaneously cast doubt on Marc Antony and bring him respect. There are other accounts of Augustus using his own charisma and guile to get what he wants, as opposed to simply taking it. At one point, he even walked into Lepidus' camps, stood at a podium, and convinced them that he was a better general, and that they should follow him instead. And they did. Augustus took an entire army without ever raising a hand- and not only did he take an army, he took an army who wanted to fight for him. Morale would never be a problem, because his new army loved him and believed him to be their one true king. He was even able to become dictator without ever truly taking the title. He merely asked for a select few powers, and was effectively emperor of Rome.
Augustus did a lot of great things for Rome, and the question has persisted- was it worth it? Were the Romans right in allowing Augustus to rule them? Was the peace worth the loss of their republic? In my opinion, yes. There is nothing inherently moral about one system of government or another, and Augusts had proved himself to be a good and strong ruler. He cared about his people, and protected them and all who looked up to him. He brought Rome peace, prosperity, and expanded the empire to greater lengths than it had previously known. The only thing truly worth regretting about Augustus' rule is that he never groomed a true successor- he was Rome's first emperor, and unfortunately, it's only good one. It is my opinion that not despite, but because of the demolishing of the republic, Augustus was able to truly restore Rome. He earned his rank not by force, or violence, or divine right, but by truly loving and doing what was best for Rome.

It is July 26, 1952 and a group of Argentinean aristocrats toast to the news of the death of one of their great enemies, first lady Eva Perón. (Larson) But on the streets of small, rural towns and in the homes of the people, there was mourning; because first lady Eva Peron was much more than a fearless political leader, she was the spiritual leader of a nation. Not only did she single-handedly gain for woman the right to vote, but she became a popular movie actress, proved that woman could be in roles of power, and is one of the most loved people in Argentinean history. Throughout her life, she did things that had never been done before by a woman from her background. Eva changed the world. Her story begins in the tiny Argentinean town of Los Toldos. (Sanavarro)
On November 21, 1919, Maria Eva Duarte was born the fifth of five children of Juana Ibarguren. Until a time shortly after Evita's birth, her father, Juan Duarte, was a fairly successful landowner. Duarte was never married to Juana Ibarguren, however, and had another family in a nearby town. After a shift of local power from conservatives to radicals (two political parties of the state), the family was faced with economic difficulties. Her father abandoned Juana and his children to return to his "real" family, forcing them from a comfortable home to a two-room shack and a life of poverty. Frequently moving and always unsure of weather a meal would come, growing up was a constant struggle for Eva.
Unlike her older siblings, Eva and Erminda- the fourth born child of Juana- never enjoyed their father's prosperous times and knew of nothing but scarcity. It was through these hard times that Eva and Erminda became very close. They were inseparable playmates, playing tag, hide-and-go-seek, hopscotch, and using homemade costumes to dress up. (Larson)
Becoming another person was a great way for Eva to escape all the stress of life. She would even participate in Erminda's school performances when she herself was too young even to attend school. When she did come of age to "don the Argentinean schoolchild's white smock" (Radison), however, the school theater was where Evita flourished, and she soon found a love of singing and acting. Her older sisters, Elisa and Blanca, encouraged her imagination with elaborate bedtime stories and her eldest brother, Juan, created playhouses for Eva and Erminda as well as built them the toys they could not afford.
But as time passed, Juan soon found work at the town's pharmacy, Blanca began to teach at the local school, and Elisa became engaged to Commander of the Military District, Major Alfredo Arrieta. Even Erminda sought a job and a fiancée. Faced with the decision of whether to settle down in Junín or leave, she chose to desert her small town for the bright lights of Buenos Aires in pursuit of her dream to become an actress. After five years of struggle, she finally hit the big time and gained her own radio show with Radiolandia. In an interview with Radiolandia, she explained how she felt about her success: "I am not an adventuress, although some (those who never forgive a young woman for succeeding) make me out to be one. I have spent more than five years dedicated to what is in me a firmly-rooted vocation: the arts. These have been five years of troubles, of noble struggles when I've known the uncertainty of adversity as well as the gratification of success" (qtd. in "To be Evita")
It was at a charity concert for earthquake victims where she first met Juan Domingo Perón. They fell in love 'at first sight' and Eva quickly recognized her relationship with Juan as an "in" to Argentina's world of politics. On March 28, 1946, Juan Perón was elected as President of the republic of Argentina. (Pettinger) For Evita, this meant the start of the fight for woman's suffrage and justice for those living in poverty. Heading rallies, speeches, and meetings, Eva was inspiring huge crowds of her supporters with her dream of a future where the women of the nation had rights and the poor were helped by the rich. With time, and a lot of work on Evita's part, these dreams would come true.
Eva was constantly working to improve the world on a larger scale. She devoted several hours every day to visits with the poor, hospitals, orphanages, and factories. She started her own charity, The Maria Eva Duarte Foundation in June 1947. Eva even had her own office in Buenos Aires where anyone with financial difficulties could walk in and ask for her help. Daily, huge crowds flocked to her office and Evita would help each and every one of them. In what little free time she had, Eva would raise support for her woman's rights movement, which finally paid off on September 9, 1947 when Law 13,010 was passed, establishing the equality of political rights between men and women. President Perón immediately wrote up a decree stating that women had the right to vote. He symbolically gave it to Eva, implying it was her accomplishment and hers to share with the people. She announced with joy to the woman of Argentina their new found rights:
"I can feel my hands tremble with joy as I grasp the laurel proclaiming victory." (qtd. in "Eva Perón Biography") Eva became even more politically active in taking up the role of secretary of labor. This gave her the reputation of being more than just the first lady, but an active member of Argentinean government. However, through all of this Eva was gaining more and more enemies from the oligarchy and upper-class of Argentinean society as well as military and political opponents. Many of them attempted to tarnish her image by creating myths and spreading false rumors.
To ensure that other countries would not receive this image of her, Juan and Eva embarked on the "rainbow tour" in 1947. (Larson) They began by visiting Spain, where she was accepted warmly. She was not quite so welcome on their next stop, Rome, where Evita visited and received a rosary from the pope. Then, after traveling to France, Eva and Perón began to gain huge national attention- even appearing on the cover of Time magazine. Biographers Fraser and Navarro wrote an official account of Eva and Juan's entire trip and had nothing but good things to say about Evita. As she traveled through the poverty-stricken streets of some European towns, Eva passed out100-peseta notes to many poor children and their families. The people seemed to love her. Next, they departed for Switzerland. There, she was rather un-popular. People threw tomatoes at the Perón's car and booed them. After a stone was thrown at her through a window, Eva had had enough and returned to Argentina.
Upon their return, another false rumor was spread about Eva hiding secret funds in a Swiss bank account. Yet her loyal supporters were not any less enthusiastic or endearing, and Juan was re-elected by an increased 64% percent of the vote (the first time he ran he only won by 53%). And this time, Eva was put forward for vice-presidential candidacy by the newly developed 'peronist' party and accepted. ("Eva Perón Biography")Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with cancer and died before she was elected, which it was supposed she would have been because of her vast popularity and adoration by the people. Even after her death, Eva Perón's legacy lives on. Her strong support for the poor and working classes sparked a political reform movement and her visits to other countries also inspired change. Celebrating her love of the theatre, the life of Eva Perón was developed into a musical, Evita, by Alan Parker and was released in 1996, to become a huge hit. Madonna starred as Evita and the script was ensured to be based off of and closely follow real events in the life of Eva Perón. Fernandez used the symbol of Evita in many of her campaigns and admits that she owes much of her success in politics to Eva.
Eva Duarte Perón affected the lives of millions of people in Argentina, and throughout the world. "Both her friends and enemies agreed she was a person of great personal charm." (Radisson) She became so much more than just Eva Perón, the first lady. She was a saint, a soldier, and a savior to her people. It was by the unwavering sprit that burned within her since her beginnings as an actress and through the thousands of kind deed s she did out of compassion that she became forever Evita.

By having these three men praise one of their deceased colleagues, it showed solidarity within the African-American community. Of course the contents of the article would say nothing but good things about Dr. Dan Williams. The Chicago Defender itself was an African-American run newspaper that encouraged civil rights and equality. This explains the style and tone of the article because in order to achieve equality within the medical field, there first has to be black students willing to go to school. By painting Dr. Dan Williams in such a positive light, it would then inspire others within the community. As an African-American, liberal newspaper, the intended audience was most certainly other African-Americans, which explains the perspective. This was a newspaper for African-Americans, run by African- Americans with the purpose of bettering the community.
Although Dr. Dan Williams' career suffered later in life, his death would ultimately prove that his life accomplishments had not gone unnoticed. Within the article, several people came forth to honor Dr. Dan Williams' memory by speaking about him as a person as well as his achievements. In particular, Senator Adelbert H. In Nevada he tried to get a job mining gold but it was a complete failure. Instead, he began to work for a newspaper. Eventually he wrote and published an article about how poorly the Chinese were treated so he got fired. After losing this job, he had nothing. He was going to kill himself but then realized he still had very little and very little is much better than having nothing at all.
Twain married a woman named Olivia and they had four children. The first child was premature and died soon after birth. Olivia's father also died around this time and she began to lose her faith. When Twain lost his daughter he was also in a lot of debt. He and Livy eventually recovered and Twain gained a lot of fame from it. Livy grew ill and the attention from the press helped him through this hard time. As Livy grew sicker, the doctor told Twain it would be best if he stayed away from her, so he wrote to her every day. One day, as Twain was playing the piano for her, she slowly drifted away. At this time, one of Twain's daughters came home to live with him. She was epileptic and had a seizure in the bathtub on Christmas Eve and drowned. Twain was devastated but still grew to be very popular with the press. By the time the Newport Folk Festival came around in July of 1965, Dylan had already recorded and released his eventually chart-topping hit "Like a Rolling Stone", but this didn't mean that his folk-loving fans would be ready to accept a live performance as an electric Dylan. Boos could be heard, and uproar was apparent, but not everyone in the crowd that night was upset with Dylan trying to break-ground into a folk-rock revolution with himself at the forefront (Williamson 52). His folkie fans weren't the only ones to dislike "Like a Rolling Stone", as even Colombia Records canceled its release at first due to its differences from Bob Dylan's other songs, and the fact that it was six minutes long, which would make it hard to be played on radio (Greene). Sometimes legends are not recognized until long after their death, but even during his time, many music critics considered Dylan to be the most influential American musician since Elvis Presley (Shelton). Anyone who is compared to Elvis Presley is already a star, and on their way to becoming a super-star. Bob Dylan did not write music with this intention, but became arguably as big of a deal as Elvis was, in his own style of course. Elvis was the link between white and black music. Bob Dylan became the link between music and meaningful lyrics. He was not the first to do this, but he did it in a way that affected the world, and that is what makes him special. The only negative reaction to Bob Dylan as an artist seemed to be when he began experimenting with electric guitar. "Dylan was booed by folk purists who wanted him to unplug his guitar..." (Plowman). "The old Dylan sound was strangled by thumping drums and reverberating guitars" (Aiken and Mcdonald). He is an artist, and still is to this day. True artists grow and change, and are not afraid, but anxious to try new things. Dylan branched out and stepped into the rock and roll world for a while. His fans loved him most for the acoustic folk music that he began with, and eventually went back to, and that is what he will most be remembered for.
All of the newspaper articles that I analyzed regarding Bob Dylan seem to have a similar theme. They all pay homage to his masterfully crafted lyrics, along with their powerful meaning, whether political or romantic. They all also recognize how big of a sensation Dylan was, and how he gained fame as soon as he hit the folk music scene. Bob Dylan changed the way music will be written forever. I passed the brick test a few weeks before, but carrying a human body up from the bottom of the pool in the thirteen-foot deep end is completely different from carrying a little ten-pound brick up from that depth. I tried not to make myself nervous before I even tried it, but it was hard. I always bit my lip when I was nervous and before I even realized it, my lip was bleeding from biting on it so hard. Once Coach was done instructing, it was my turn to go down and do the rescue. All I had to do was go down next to the person, open my eyes, move the victim's arm, stabilize his head with a chin splint, drag him up at an angle and flip his body over before I get to the surface. In theory, it should be pretty easy.
I submerged myself quickly into the deep, icy water. I counted the steps in my head to make sure I did everything right. I clamped my arms down on his chest and back so tightly I could've cracked one of his ribs. Now I just had to drag him up and flip him over, which turned out to be the hardest part. When I got to the other side of him, I felt water burning in my sinuses. Crap. By the time I finally got to the surface, I was exhausted and out of breath. I was only under the water for 30 to 40 seconds, but it felt like I was down there for five minutes. I coughed and gasped for air as Coach's deep, scary voice yelled out everything I did wrong. "Clemons... you didn't move the arm. You need to come up at more of an angle, and don't flip him until you get closer to the surface! It's more stable that way. Nice try. Laura, your turn."
Even though he was only 4' 11", coach was still pretty scary when he wanted to be. He had an angry look on his face all the time, which only added to the intimidation. I felt so stupid. Coach let me be the first to demonstrate and I couldn't do it right.

I was in a good mood because I was about to take down this lifeguard test. I was about to become a certified lifeguard. I could picture in myself in my head diving in the pool on a hot, summer day to save somebody. It made me really excited to think about my future as a lifeguard.
After waiting a few minutes for everyone to finish laps, it was finally time to get started. Coach rattled off names of people that still needed to test out skills and I volunteered to go first before anyone else had the chance to get a word in. Coach had a surprised look on his face and was almost speechless for a second before he said, "Alright Clemons, let's see what you're made of."
I thought to myself, "Steel, Coach. I'm made of steel." It was finally time. I jumped in the water and treaded water next to my partner while I waited for Coach to get settled on his chair with his clipboard to watch me. When he finally settled in and told me to go, I was ready.
I plunged down into the water next to my victim. "Okay Claire, now move the arm." I moved her arm and then I thought to myself, "Good, now put her in a head-chin support and start dragging her up. Over the next week, I studied the lifeguarding manual that coach gave me at the beginning of the class. I had no doubts about passing the written test. I daydreamed all week about my future as a lifeguard, sitting in the high chairs with my shades on in my red swimsuit. It was exhilarating to think about. His contributions to American music and his society have received national and international recognition and awards. His music is sung and heard the world over.
To summarize who Bob Dylan is one must first look at Bob Dylans music. And, Bob Dylan was a lot more than a singer of protest songs. While that's how he started, he soon revealed a lyrical and musical talent that were far more developed than in any other folk-singer of his or any previous generation. Bob Dylan was the single most influential musician of the 1960s. He started the fire. He turned music into a form of mass communication. He galvanized a generation through folk songs that became anthems. The entire world of rock music followed his every step. When Dylan went electric, everybody went electric. When Dylan went country, everybody did. His legacy is monumental. Blowing In The Wind (1962) created the epitome of the finger-pointing protest song. A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall (1962) coined a new kind of folk ballad. Mr Tambourine Man (1965) opened the season of psychedelic music. The album Highway 61 Revisited (1965), after his conversion to electric instruments, contained Like A Rolling Stone, a somber six-minute portrait of a friend. Blonde On Blonde (1966), the first double-LP album ever, remains one of rock's all-time masterpieces: two lengthy, rambling, free-form, organ-driven elegies, After sinking into the depths of country-rock, Dylan would resurrect a decade later with a new sound, the elegant fusion of folk-rock, tex-mex and gospel- soul expounded on Desire (1976) and Street Legal (1978); a feat repeated a decade later with another synthesis of styles, the one embraced on Empire Burlesque (1985) and Oh Mercy (1989). One decade later, Dylan would still be surprising the rock audience, this time with Time Out Of Mind (1997), perhaps in the attempt to prove that he is as immortal as humanly possible. And most recently, after defying all doubts, released Love and Theft (2001), showing that no age has ever been, nor will ever be ahead of Bob Dylan.
While his music does describe him extremely well, the clich is true, actions speak louder than words. Bob Dylan followed in the tradition of other great folksingers who protested against unfair and inhuman social conditions. Like them, he helped bring about change in American society through his lyrics, composition, distinctive style, and performance. In the heat of the nation's struggles, he sang in support of the Civil Rights Movement and against the Vietnam War. Very few musician have influenced the music and the culture of their times as Bob Dylan has.
Dylan is, at the least, two things for his generation: the freewheeling folk singer - the one who stirred the masses by pointing an accusatory finger at the "masters of war", and the musician who made folk-rock a baroque art. But Dylan wasn't just that. Most of all Dylan is a myth, perhaps the only true myth rock history has ever had. His music is legendary. At least it was, from the the first political hymns until the religious conversion. Dylan's major influences were the Bible, the legends of the frontier and epic poets like Walt Whitman. Dylan's is truly an American myth. Dylans myth did not compare to the myths of the Ancient Greeks, or the myths of the Wild West. He did earn his myth. But, like them, he was mythological; his music was mythological, the music of a man enlightened by God to guide his people onto the righteous path.
The key to the interpretation of Bob Dylan is religion. From the beginning, from the very first "talking blues", Dylan's music has always had a religious essence. Dylan was a bursting visionary who addressed the times in apocalyptic terms, who commented as a universal judge would, who threw mournful condemnations against the forces of evil ("the masters of war) and who raised gentle tributes to his guardian angels ("sad-eyed lady of the lowlands"). The ethical and political perspectives of his times were natural offsprings of the heroic Neo-Christianity of which he was the prophet, the inflexible repository of the truth, and the enforcer of the commandments. Dylan's litanies, whether sung in underground cafes or at impressive rallies, replaced Holy Mass. His message became the new liturgy for a secular society that longed for religious relevance.
He was different, for a lot of reasons, not all of them obvious. Dylan had an unpleasant voice and a caustic, arrogant demeanor. His common format was a rattling litany of a sort, later defined as "talking blues", by which he put to music the alienation and the desperation of a generation. It didn't take long to figure that Dylan was better at blues than folk; what took time was the realization that blues was better suited to express the mood of his young white audience. His nasal baritone was the emblem, perhaps unconscious, of honesty and fairness.
Dylan wrote unusually refined lyrics. He was more of a surrealistic poet than a folk singer; his lyrics built literary bridges between metaphysical visions and the ferocious sociopolitical reality, to express the yearning and the anguish of his generation. In order to fashion a new oratory format Dylan took his inspiration from two old historical models - Whitman and the Bible - and molded them into an elaborate vernacular enjoyable for all.
To ask the question, Who is Bob Dylan? is to ask what one feels music is. Bob Dylan is the essence for which all things that American music stands. Bob Dylan is not a man to be characterized by his life, but by the lives of those he effects. Is he a revolutionary? Yes. Is he a rock legend? Yes. Is he a man to whom no one else can compare in deed or word? Yes. Bob Dylan is a man unlike the men of this world. Bob Dylan is a man who knows what he wants and wants what he feels. Bob Dylan is the kind of man all men should strive to be.
