Parents should be Aware of the Dangers of Fast Food Restaurants
"Fast food chanins must bear some of the blame for the antion's weight problem” (Goode 427). Corporations are not the cause of he growing obesity epidemic among children is caused by irresponsible parents not properly taking care of their children, not companies that are trying to be successful. The companies are not at fault because a parent willfully decided to purchase an unhealthy meal for their child. Fast food companies offer larger portion sizes for adults at first, then it trickled down into kid's meals. These companies have reduced the price of their meals to accommodate more people and to gain more customers.
They advertise to announce new products for the public. These companies open locations frequently to become more available and to gain more business. They offer a variety of choices to accommodate any customer with special tastes or needs. The companies are not holding people at gunpoint to purchase their product, it is entirely the choice of the consumer and the company's actions reflect that.
The growing epidemic of childhood obesity may be caused by the increasing portion sizes that fast food restaurants offer today. Erica Goode describes the problem in her article, “The Gorge-Yourself Environment.” “From giant sodas to supersize burgers to all-you-can eat buffets, America's approach to food can be summed up by one word: Big” (Goode 427).
American's pride themselves on having an excess of everything whether that be food, cars, or other materials. This results in Americans seeking the biggest and tastiest meals. For some, it is about the challenge to consume the most massive burger and for some it is about getting the most, “bang for their buck.” An ad from Mcdonald's shows the mindset of getting more for less, as the ad tries to sell the supersize option as having more food for more value. Mcdonalds was a pioneer of the larger portion sizes with supersized meals that Americans loved since they felt it was a good deal. Consequently, children are affected by the larger portion sizes as evident by the childhood obesity epidemic that is ravaging the United States. "In 2012, fully 18% of children between the ages of 6 and 11 were considered obese, up from 7% in 1980,"(Kaplan). This statistic just shows how staggering the epidemic is and how vulnerable children are becoming to obesity over time. If parents do not strive to provide properly proportioned meals for their children, then the percentage of children that are obese will rise. With these larger portion sizes, it would be obvious that prices would rise; however, prices have reduced over time.
The prices of fast food meals have gradually fallen to entice low-income customers. For example, currently there is a special at Mcdonald's for a 50 piece Chicken Mcnugget meal for ten dollars. This deal appeals to low-income families since it can feed a family for only ten dollars. This leads to low-income children being more at risk of developing childhood obesity.
According to Goode, “Price is a powerful influence" (Goode 428). This is true since a parent would rather buy the 50 piece Chicken Mcnugget deal since it is cheaper and easier than cooking a healthy meal for their children at home. Also in every happy meal that you can purchase there is a toy included inside the happy meal. This toy can entertain the child for at least a couple of hours. This seems like a great deal for any parent since they can feed their child and distract them for a while for a relatively cheap price. While it is somewhat relieving to have the option to distract a child for a while so a parent can have a chance to rest, it is irresponsible to feed your child fast food often. The child may beg and plead to get their kids meal, but ultimately it is up to the parent to purchase it and feed it to their child. Price has a huge influence on the consumption of fast food. However, advertisements for the meals are what informs the public of the deals and what entices them further to go to their local fast food restaurant.
Fast food restaurants have created very effective advertisements that target children and they display them on every children's television channel. An excerpt from the article, "The Gorge-Yourself Environment" perfectly describes human nature when informed about free food. “Keep the tabletop in the office stocked with cookies and candy, and people will nibble their way through the workday, even if they are not hungry" (Goode 427). When someone knows that there is free or cheap food within their reach they will obtain it just because it is free or cheap even if it is not healthy. Another way that fast food corporations advertise their meals is by not directly talking about the meal but placing it in an advertisement about the restaurant. For instance, Mcdonald's and Burger king will usually have children having fun in their “play places,” eating their happy meals, and playing with the toys that they receive. These advertisements show a happy, playful environment that entices children to beg their parents to stop by their local fast food restaurant. Another way that fast food restaurants advertise their product is to include a well known celebrity or athlete. According to TIME magazine, "there's more evidence of how powerful a celebrity - especially a professional athlete - can be in influencing children's behavior." This can very much influence children since children see athletes as role models and will want to imitate them. This leads to them visiting the fast food restaurant since their role model does. A good example of this is a Burger King ad that has David Beckham endorsing one of their smoothies. Some advertisements do not advertise a specific product, but advertise a new location being opened.
The availability of fast food restaurants in the United States is uncomparable to any other country. Fast food restaurants are within eyesight in any city. Corporations place their restaurants in highly populated centers such as shopping centers or by schools. As evident in an academic study, “In our sample. .. high school students were disproportionately exposed to both FFRs [Fast Food Restaurants) and TOs near schools” (D'Angelo p. 1561). These locations are placed near schools to target students that are seeking a cheap meal after school.
These restaurants are also prioritizing placing locations near low-income families. It is the job of the parent to show their child that there are better options to satisfy their hunger after school. However it is natural for someone to partake in what is available and this is made evident by a study in Erica Goode's article. "When the candy was in plain sight on workers' desks, they ate an average of nine pieces each” (Goode 428). These workers would consume more candy the more readily available it was to them. This is caused by the reasoning that there is no direct consequence to eating the food since it is free and it takes little to no work to obtain. In an ad by Mcdonald's there is a clock showing 2:04 A.M. and it states that Mcdonald's is still open and this shows how easy it is to visit Mcdonald's no matter what time it is. As more fast food restaurants are created it becomes more available and consequently it creates a greater number of food choices for the consumer.
The number of fast food choices has increased which has increased the amount of fast food consumption. For example, in a study in Goode's article,"participants served a four course meal with meat, fruit, bread and a pudding-foods with very different tastes, flavors and textures-ate 60 percent more food than those served an equivalent meal of only their favorite course" (428). Corporations have paid attention to these studies and have introduced different foods in hope of increased sales. This has affected happy meals also since they offer different choices with them instead of the regular burger, fries, and a drink, they will also offer different options. For instance, in an ad by Mcdonald's, it portrays some of the items offered on the their dollar menu. Instead of showing a burger the ad shows a chicken sandwich, sundae, and salad. This ad shows the variety of food that Mcdonald's offers that can accommodate anyone. The number of food choices that have become available has resulted in increased obesity rates since everyone can find something that they like at a fast food restaurant.
A parent controls what their child eats not a fast food company. The increased portion sizes reflect the wants of the customers. The reduced prices are to gain more low-income customers. Children can easily be manipulated by advertisements, but adults should be able to tell the difference between fantasy and reality. Fast food restaurants would not be so readily available if there was not such a high demand for them. The number of food choices are just a common strategy for any kind of company to employ to gain customers. The blaming of fast food companies for the childhood obesity epidemic is just an easy scapegoat for irresponsible, lazy parents that do not care about the health of their children.

Who doesn’t love a delicious buffet with all of its tantalizing options: savory mashed potatoes, an array of savory meats, sweet desserts, and even crispy salads. A trip to a buffet restaurant comes with seemingly limitless choices all for one low price. Here are some hints for enjoying your trip to the buffet without uncomfortably overeating or worse yet, getting food poisoning.
1. Choose a Busy Restaurant
When choosing a buffet restaurant, you may be tempted to choose one with a shorter line. After all, who wants to fight the crowds at the steam table? But while an empty restaurant means shorter lines, it also means food sits out longer on the tables. Choose a restaurant that has enough patrons present to keep the food tables refreshed at a good pace.
2. Go in a Good Mood
If you want to enjoy your meal without making food choices you will later regret, don’t head to the buffet while you are feeling blue. We are more likely to overeat and make food choices that leave us feeling overstuffed and bloated if we eat while we are upset. Listen to some happy tunes on your drive over and bring along your favorite companions to make your meal truly enjoyable.
3. Don’t Starve Yourself First
It may seem like you should wait until you are good and hungry before visiting the buffet restaurant, but don’t go feeling starved. When you get to the buffet, you want to be sure you are able to enjoy the foods you really love, not just stuff your face with the first foods you see. So, have a light, protein-packed snack 3 hours before you head out to the buffet. This will ensure you truly enjoy the delights the buffet has to offer.
4. Know Which Foods You Desire
Before you head out to the restaurant, think about which food options you are in the mood for. Most buffets tend to have options such as Italian, Chinese, and roasted meats. You can expect to find fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and flaky biscuits. Have your entrée choice in mind so you are not pulled astray by the myriad of options that first meet your gaze. While it is perfectly okay to try something you hadn’t thought of, don’t fill up on items just because they are in front of you.
5. Cruise Before You Choose
When you first enter the buffet line, walk from buffet to buffet to see what is offered before you even pick up a plate. It is easy to load your plate at the first table, and then find you don’t have room when you run across a delectable at a later table. First, make the rounds of all the choices and narrow down your top picks. Then go back to fill your plate with your favorite choices.
6. Choose the Smaller Plate
It may be tempting to grab the large plate for loading up your choices, but a smaller plate will help you limit your portions and not overdo it. As yummy as all those tempting dishes appear, overloading can leave you feeling overfull, bloated, and miserable. Start small and stop when your plate is full. You can always go back for seconds if you are still hungry.
7. Don’t Use a Tray
There are 2 reasons to avoid using cafeteria trays at the restaurant. The first is the extra space may entice you to load up on foods you wouldn’t choose if you had less space. The second is that cafeteria trays have shown to be highly populated with disease-causing germs and bacteria. The Public Health and Safety Organization reports that plastic cafeteria trays are among the germiest spots in schools, second only to water fountain spigots. Skip the restaurant tray as well and save your health.
8. Plan Your Plate
The American Diabetes Association recommends this tool for visualizing your food choices. A well-balanced plate will contain 50% non-starchy vegetables, 25% proteins, and 25% grains and starchy foods. Before hitting the buffet table, plan to fill half your plate with green leafy or cruciferous vegetables. Visualize the next 25% of your plate containing lean meats, and the remainder is for whatever suits your fancy.
9. Start with Fruits and Vegetables
Indulging in a smorgasbord of delights doesn’t mean you can’t also treat your body to the nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants found in leafy salad greens, fresh seasonal fruit, and vibrant berries. Start with antioxidant-rich strawberries, nutrient-packed spinach or romaine lettuce, and non-starchy vegetables. These foods help you feel full while also providing the proper fuel to keep you feeling good, rather than over-stuffed.
10. Sample a Variety First
When perusing the buffet tables, take small sample portions of the foods that appeal most to you. Why waste calories on an item that doesn’t taste as good as it first looked? When you have sampled the items on your plate, you can always go back for seconds of the ones that really tickled your taste buds.
11. Know Large Containers Have Low Turnover
Keep in mind that while that big vat of lasagna may look tempting, the larger size may mean it is sitting out on the table longer. Items that sit out for longer periods of time have more time to go bad—or be sneezed on!
12. Avoid High-Risk Foods
Foods that are high risk for contamination by food-borne pathogens include sprouts, eggs for salad toppings or in salad dressings, and uncooked items such as sushi. Skip these items to avoid risk of food poisoning.
13. Avoid Starches
If you are going to be loading your plate with goodies at the buffet, you may want to avoid starchy foods. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, breads, and pastas all contain starch, which is high in carbohydrates and calories. If you are planning to load up on lots of different types of foods, limit these. That way you can leave room for other delicacies.
14. Take it Easy on Sugary Beverages
Buffet restaurants usually offer sodas, water, milk, and juices. Drinking your calories adds to the sugar rush and bloat that come from over-indulging. Stay away from the sugary beverages. Drinking water with your meal ensures you replenish your body without adding unwanted calories.
15. Consider Bringing Hand Sanitizer
There’s no denying that there are plenty of opportunities for germs to attack food that sits out on a buffet table. Tongs and serving spoons must be exchanged for clean ones on a regular basis. However, the truth is that many people have the opportunity to handle them, which means many opportunities for germs to alight. It may be wise to bring along hand sanitizer to use at the table before digging in.
16. Keep Your Back to the Buffet
If seeing a dizzying array of delectable foods entices you to rush through your own meal, you may want to sit with your back to the buffet. Find a seat away from the buffet so you can concentrate on enjoying the meal you have in front of you. That way, you can determine if you really want to go back for seconds, rather than just responding to the call of the foods on display.
17. Relish Each Bite
Don’t hurry through your meal. Relax, enjoy good company, and savor every bite of food. If you are hurrying to get back to the buffet, you may not enjoy what you already have. Instead, enjoy each texture and taste. When you have leisurely finished your meal, then you can decide which items you like best and which ones might be worth a second trip.
18. Digest Before Returning for Seconds
In addition to savoring every mouthful, take time to digest after you have finished your meal. The buffet isn’t going anywhere! It can take 20 minutes for our bodies to recognize we are full. Give your body time to digest and enjoy your first helpings, then decide if you really need seconds. You may just decide you’ve already had exactly what you need.
19. Be Sure to Tip the Staff
It may seem silly to tip the restaurant staff when you have been serving yourself. But if you stop to notice, the staff keep busy at buffet restaurants as well. Waitstaff clear away used dishes, replenish the buffet with fresh servings, and keep plates and utensils stocked. In some restaurants they refill your beverages as well. Be sure to remember these hard workers with a well-earned tip.

Harriet Tubman’s Life and Work in United States
"I would fight for my liberty so long as my strength lasted, and if the time came for me to go, the Lord would let them take me." Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross around 1820 to Harriet Green and Ben Ross and raised on Maryland's Eastern Shore in Dorchester County, in an area where freedom was just in there imaganation. Araminta was injured as a child. Crossing pathes with a runaway slave caused her to get hit in the head with a heavy metal weight. She started having seizures which she believed to be visions from God and her way of communicating with God. After the death of Mary Brodes, Harriet Tubman's early life became full of hardship and pain. Mary Brodess' son Edward sold three of her sisters to plantations in the south and north, seperating the family as whole. When a trader from Georgia approached Brodess about buying Rit's youngest son, Moses, Rit successfully resisted the further fracturing of her family, setting a powerful example for her young daughter. Physical violence was a part of daily life for Tubman and her family. The violence she suffered early in life caused permanent physical injuries. Harriet later recounted a particular day when she was lashed five times before breakfast. She carried the scars for the rest of her life. The line between freedom and slavery was hazy for Tubman and her family. Harriet Tubman's father, Ben, was freed from slavery at the age of 45 years old. Ben had few options but to continue working as a timber estimator and foreman for his former owners. She found out that her mother's owner's will specify that she and her children be manumitted when they reached the age of 45 years old. Brodess didn't care about honoring his mother's will.
In 1844, Harriet married a free black man named John Tubman. At the time around half of the African-American people on the eastern shore of Maryland were free, and was not unusual for a family to include both free and enslaved people, as did Tubman's. Little is known about John Tubman or his marriage to Harriet, including whether and how long they lived together. Any children they might have had would have been considered enslaved, since the mother's status dictated that of any offspring. John declined to make the voyage on the Underground Railroad with Harriet, preferring to stay in Maryland with a new wife.
On September 17, 1849, Harriet and her brothers, Ben and Henry, escaped from the Poplar Neck Plantation. Ben and Henry had second thoughts and returned to the plantation. The newspaper The Cambridge Democrat published a $300 reward for the return of Harriet and her two brothers. Harriet travelled 90 miles to Pennsylvania, a free state, using the Underground Railroad. It was not unusual for families in this area to include both free and enslaved members. Harriet's own husband, John Tubman was a free black man. Harriet fell ill. Her owner, Brodess, died leaving the plantation in a dire financial situation. Three of her sisters, Linah, Soph and Mariah Ritty, were sold. Her status, however, remained unchanged until she fled to Pennsylvania a free state in 1849. She crossed into the free state of Pennsylvania with a feeling of relief and awe, and recalled later: "When I found I had crossed that line, I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. There was such a glory over everything; the sun came like gold through the trees, and over the fields, and I felt like I was in Heaven." She would later adopt the name "Harriet" after her mother: Harriet Ross. Her husband did not make the journey and ultimately re-married after Harriet's departure. Harriet would return to Maryland many times over the next decade to rescue both family and non-famly members from the bondages of slavery. Harriet earned the nickname "Moses" after the prophet Moses in the Bible who led his people to freedom. In all of her journeys she "never lost a single passenger." Tubman's work was a constant threat to her own freedom and safety. Slave holders placed a bounty for her capture and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was an ever-present danger, imposing severe punishments on any person who assisted the escape of a slave. In December 1851, Tubman guided a group of 11 fugitives northward. There is evidence to suggest that the party stopped at the home of abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass.
In April 1858, Tubman was introduced to the abolitionist John Brown, who advocated the use of violence to disrupt and destroy the institution of slavery. Tubman shared Brown's goals and at least tolerated his methods. Tubman claimed to have had a prophetic vision of Brown before they met. When Brown began recruiting supporters for an attack on slaveholders at Harper's Ferry, he turned to "General Tubman" for help. After Brown's subsequent execution, Tubman praised him as a martyr. Harriet Tubman remained active during the Civil War. Working for the Union Army as a cook and nurse, Tubman quickly became an armed scout and spy. The first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war, she guided the Combahee River Raid, which liberated more than 700 slaves in South Carolina.
In early 1859, abolitionist Senator William H. Seward sold Tubman a small piece of land on the outskirts of Auburn, New York. The land in Auburn became a haven for Tubman's family and friends. Tubman spent the years following the war on this property, tending to her family and others who had taken up residence there. Harriet wore many hats: She was an active proponent of women's suffrage and worked alongside women such as side Susan B. Anthony. During the civil war, Harriet also worked for the Union Army as a cook, a nurse and even a spy. Harriet was acquainted with leading abolitionists of the day, including John Brown who conferred with "General Tubman" about his plans to raid Harpers Ferry. Harriet had one daughter, Gertie, whom she and her second husband (Nelson Davis) adopted after the Civil war. Harriet suffered life-long headaches, seizures and had vivid dreams as a result of a traumatic head injury she suffered as a teenager while trying to stand up for a fellow field hand.
These same symptoms gave her powerful visions that she ascribed to God and helped guide her on many trips to the North while leading others to freedom. Just before Harriet's death in 1913 she told friends and family, "I go to prepare a place for you." She was buried with military honors in Fort Hill Cemetery in New York. Harriet Tubman, widely known and well-respected while she was alive, became an American icon in the years after she died. A survey at the end of the 20th century named her as one of the most famous civilians in American history before the Civil War, third only to Betsy Ross and Paul Revere. She continues to inspire generations of Americans struggling for civil rights with her bravery and bold action. When she died, the city of Auburn commemorated her life with a plaque on the courthouse. Tubman was celebrated in many other ways throughout the nation in the 20th century. Dozens of schools were named in her honor, and both the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn and the Harriet Tubman Museum in Cambridge serve as monuments to her life. A 1978 movie, A Woman Called Moses, commemorated her life and career. In 2016, the U.S. Treasury Department announced that the countenance of Harriet Tubman will appear on a new $20 bill.

The Life of an Abolitionist in the Book Harriet Tubman
"Go on or die." Is something a woman named Harriet Tubman would say from the story "Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad" by Ann Petry. Harriet Tubman is a courageous woman who helps slaves gets their freedom back by escorting them through an "underground-railroad” which leads to Canada where slavery rules are different. The story helps readers how much Tubman cared about Slaves and freedom for African-Americans. The author was trying to inspire others to be just as noble as Harriet Tubman was.
The story first takes place in Maryland and then goes all the way up to Canada. Maryland is where the story starts and it is where Tubman saves the slaves. She escorts the group of slaves through the Underground Railroad, to Canada. The story also took place during 1851 and it was winter making the trip very cold and sleepless. This, however, did not stop Harriet Tubman and if any of the slaves decided to stop, she said "Go on or die." This supports how noble Harriet was and how much she cared for the slaves and their freedom.
Figurative language was a big factor in the story. There are several examples the author included, however, “Go on or die" had a lot of meaning to me. Tubman said this because if she let one of the slaves free, they would turn traitor and the slave would tell everything that Harriet was doing for the slaves. Because of this, Tubman said "...You'd be better off dead" and then she points the gun towards the slave. This forced several slaves to go on. Another example is when Harriet said "...would have to feed them on hope and bright dreams of freedom instead of the fried pork and corn bread and milk she had promised them." I thought this meant that Harriet had to give them freedom and hope to make up for the food that they didn't get. In addition, when Tubman described the slaves as "Eleven-thousand dollars' worth of flesh and bone and muscle that belonged to Maryland planters" also is an example of figurative language.
The tone of the story is serious. I though the author wrote this story to show how much Harriet Tubman wanted slaves to have free lives and slavery to end. In addition, I think the author tried to inspire others to be just as courageous and noble as Harriet Tubman. When the author wrote "She had a definite, crystallized purpose..." I thought the author meant that Tubman's purpose was to help slaves get their freedom and put them out of their dreadful lives the once lived being a slave.
I think Harriet Tubman reminds me of Superman or any other superhero. In my opinion, Harriet Tubman could be described as a superhero because she puts her life at risk just to give freedom to slaves that she doesn't even know. Superman is noble and courageous just like Harriet Tubman. Because of all of the things Tubman does, I truly think she could be described as a "superhero".
In conclusion, I hope you can now realize how much Harriet Tubman inspires me. I hope the story inspires others too, and to take action just like how Harriet did in the story. In the end, you could describe Harriet Tubman as a courageous, hard-working, noble woman.

The Contributions of Harriet Tubman, Dred Scott and Frederick Douglass in the Quest of African Americans for Freedom
Throughout history, African Americans have continually had to fight for equal treatment, a very controversial issue. Without early abolitionists such as Harriet Tubman, Dred Scott, and Frederick Douglass, African American rights would not have been established as soon as they were. As well as early freedoms, the foundation of African American civil rights of the 50's and 60's was based upon the initial defiance of African Americans. Their forward thinking, drive for reform, and progressive nature built the basis for equality within American society.
The Underground Railroadl is one of Tubman's most prominent accomplishments. She spent countless hours freeing hundreds of African American slaves from the south, helping them to escape to the North. Tubman was a guide of the Underground Railroad, which was a network of people that helped African American slaves escape to the North and Canada. The secret route consisted of safe houses in which the slaves would hide during the day. The safe houses were typically about twenty miles apart, forcing the slaves to keep a steady pace in there journey to freedom. Although Harriet Tubman is well known for her involvement in the Underground Railroad, she also spent numerous hours aiding the Union during the Civil War. She was the first woman in American history to lead a military expedition. She served the Union as a nurse, cook, and spy as well. Her humanitarian ways granted her the nickname "Moses". Later, Frederick Douglass named her the great American", stating "I know of no one who has willingly encountered more perils and hardships to serve our enslaved people”. Tubman was constantly challenging the ways of American thinking in order to gain equality among American citizens. Tubman was born into slavery which propelled her to expose the cruelty and ridicule in which slaves were forced to cope with. This was a major milestone in African American history, It displayed the emergence of freedoms that African American's would demand be granted to them.
Another extremely influential African American was Dred Scott. He was born a slave like Tubman, but instead of escaping his slavery, he attempted to fight it politically. Dred Scott as well as his family had been moved by his owner from the slave state of Alabama to the free state of Illinois. In hopes of gaining his and his family's freedom, he appealed to the Supreme Court. In March of 1857, the United States Supreme Court declared that all African Americans, both slaves and free, would not be permitted citizenship within the United States. Along with this, the court declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional, allowing slavery to invade the north.2 The court case Dred Scott vs Sanford, was an exceeding breakthrough for African American's even though he lost the case. Many African American's, slave and free, were angered by the Supreme Court's decision. Abolitionists both African American and Caucasian were propelled to expose the wrongs of inequality, even more than before. Frederick Douglass, an African American journalist, saw the case's decision in a positive light. He saw the decision as a way to bring attention to the subject of slavery, and ultimately destroy the evil. This protest would foreshadow the events that would eventually lead to the gaining of the passage of the 14th Amendment.
Frederick Douglass was an addition to African American abolitionists that made a difference. Douglass escaped to freedom in 1838, and his aim was to promote freedom to all slaves in the United States. He focused on educating himself, attending abolitionist meetings. One meeting that influenced him extremely was William Loyd Garrison speech at the Bristol Anti-Slavery Society. Garrison's passionate protest against the unacceptable treatment that African Americans had dealt with thrust Douglass into his first affair. He had become literate during his life as a slave, so he created his first newspaper, the North Star. It was centered in Rochester, New York.3 It did not simply denounce slavery, but it addressed issues in which minorities such as women, African Americans, and the like were managing during the time. His newspaper circulated to people of the United States, the Indies, and Europe, which allowed these affairs to be contemplated by more than just the United States. His main goal was to obtain emancipation for the African American population within the United States. It was considered the most influential African American newspaper of the antebellum era. The drive that Frederick Douglass possessed not only created abolitionist opinions, but built a passageway for reform thinkers and journalists.
African American civil rights was a war fought throughout the majority of American history. Beginning with Harriet Tubman and her escapes to freedom, and ending with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950's and 60's. Abolitionists allowed for free thinking and reform. It also propelled the speed in which the 13th 14th and 15ch Amendments were put into effect. Equality was fostered by abolitionists whose drive and yearn for equality allowed African American's to finally attain what they wanted.

The Life and Activism of Harriet Tubman, an American Abolitionist and Humanitarian
In the nineteenth century, there were hundreds of abolitionists who helped slaves escape their hostile owners, but there was one woman who went above and beyond to save slaves. This woman's name is Araminta Harriet Ross, most commonly known as Harriet Tubman. Her actions saved many people's lives and she is recognized as one of the bravest women in history.
Harriet Tubman knew how cruel slavery was all too well; she was born into slavery in 1819 in Maryland and her whole family was raised in slavery including her grandparents! Harriet escaped from her master's plantation in 1849; she left at night and was helped by a woman that was a part of the Underground Railroad? (the Underground Railroad was an arrangement of secret houses and routes to states that did not allow slavery. The Railroad was run by abolitionist and it was the best way to escape slavery). Once Harriet reached Philadelphia she stated, "I had crossed the line. I was free; but there was no one to welcome me to the land of freedom. I was a stranger in a strange land; and my home after all, was down in Maryland, because my father, my mother, my brothers, and sisters, and friends were there". Although, she felt lonely she made sure to keep herself busy. The best way she distracted herself was by helping others and become a member of the Underground Railroad.
Harriet Tubman would often return to slave-holding states and help slaves survive and runaway. Within her lifetime she took nineteen trips to the South and saved people. She was such a threat to slave owners that there was a reward for her capturing. The reward was over $40,000 which was a very large amount of money back then. Apparently, she had stolen $300,000 of slave property which is why her reward was so high. Once she escaped she had became the "conductor" for the Underground Railroad.
Harriet Tubman cared very deeply for her family and would do anything for them. When she escaped successfully she attempted to bring her brothers with her but they decided to stay at the plantation because they were scared. A year after she had escaped she came back to save her sister and her sister's two children. Her attempt was successful and she made a second trip to save her brother and two other slaves. Harriet was married when she had escaped and she returned to help her husband escape, but she found out that he had married another woman, so she left with other slaves.
Harriet had multiple techniques that helped her save slaves escape and not get caught. One of her techniques was by leaving on a Saturday night, because bounties for runaways could not be posted in newspapers on Sundays. Another way they would escape was by hiding in wagons and being hidden under straw, blankets, etc. If Harriet was helping infant runaway she would drug the baby if it was crying so it wouldn't bring attention to them while hiding from slave hunters. She also would steal the escapees master buggy in order to escape quickly, this was a very successful technique. Harriet was a very clever woman and tricked multiple slave hunters. Once, "she overheard some men reading her wanted poster, which stated that she was illiterate." so "She promptly pulled out a book and feigned reading it. The ploy was enough to fool the men.".5 Occasionally slaves would become scared want to return to their families, so they'd attempt to run back to their master's home. Harriet never let slaves return home, instead she would get out a gun and say "You'll be free or die a slave!". She would not let slaves run back home, because they could give Harriet away and she could get caught by slave hunters. Harriet became a leader to all slaves and was nicknamed "Moses". Within the nineteen trips she had taken she saved and helped over 300 slaves.
Once the Civil War began Harriet began to help the Union Army. At first, she was a cook and helped make food for troops and she also was a nurse. Eventually her skills were noticed and she became an armed scout and helped the army by being a spy because she knew the land so well. She also knew a lot about the Confederate Army so her knowledge was very useful to the Union Army. While in service she helped the Combahee River Raid, a group of a 150 soldiers, to help free over seven hundred slaves in South Carolina."
During her freedom, she had become acquainted with William Seaward, he was a New York Senator in 1858. They were very good friends and he was an abolitionist and would allow Harriet to occasionally rest at his home with escaped slaves so they could take a break overnight. In 1858 after the Civil War had ended, William Seaward sold Harriet seven acres of land and a home, she made the house a home for the elderly who were African American. The home was called the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged. Unfortunately, Harriet couldn't keep the house. She could not afford to pay the taxes any longer so she donated it to an African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Her friends, family and admirers tried to help her pay for the home but they could not afford for a long amount of time.
The long life of Harriet Tubman ended in 1913. The cause of her death was Pneumonia, but before that she was experiencing very bad head pains from a previous head injury when she was a child. She had to go to a hospital to end the pains and undergo brain surgery. A few years later she died at the age of ninety-six. She was buried with military honors in a gravesite at the Auburn's Fort Hill Cemetery.
In conclusion, Harriet Tubman was one of the most inspirational, honorable, and bravest woman there is. She risked her life to save hundreds of stranger's lives. Her actions helped so many people and she never had to, she chose to. Through her clever techniques she became one of the most successful and best abolitionist there ever was. She is so honorable that she may even be put on the twenty-dollar bill.

The Three Harriets: Jasobs, Beecher-Stowe and Tubman
The female name, Harriet, has historically symbolised feminine virtue, strength and fortitude. Meaning "estate ruler" or "she who rules the home," communicates the natural leadership ability of Harriet and even hints at her ambidexterity and her skills to operate affairs and maneuvre life in both domains of the household and the world of work. Three notable women emerge: Harriet Ann Jacobs, Harriet Beecher-Stowe and Harriet Tubman. Heavily involved in social activism, these Harriets have shaped human rights and empowered so many to break down the social walls and pursue their self-determined dreams.
Harriet Ann Jacobs (1813 – 1897)
Harriet Ann Jacobs, abolitionist and feminist, documents her life as a slave woman in the work "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" (1862). The chapter on Childhood relates the happy days as a young, innocent girl. However, the deaths of her mother and her mother's mistress are blows which expose her to the horrors and harsh realities of slavery specifically for the female slave. The chapter on "The Jealous Mistress” lays bare the sexual exploitation of the female slave and the master's control over her body and the resultant tensions in the home. The slave girl's guilt is compounded by the suspicion and malice of her mistress who recognizes the sexual relations between female slave and her husband, hence, the female slave is the target of both master and mistress. Child-bearing becomes a business as slave-masters father children with their female slaves. The cuckolded wives turn a blind eye and sell the children as property, separating family. A Perilous Passage in a Slave Girl's Life tells about the slave-girl's marred innocence, spoiled childhood and the inevitable surrender of her virginity. Although a slave girl tries to follow morals and standards of society by marrying, the narrator begs not to be judged a loose woman. The Loophole of Retreat describes the fugitive slave's hide-out while she escapes the clutches of her slave-master, Dr. Flint. Dr. Flint rightly characterizes the master for he is stony-hearted, tyrannical and unsympathetic of the repercussions of his actions. He is self absorbed and is bent on spoiling his female slaves.
Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811 - 1896)
Harriet Beecher Stowe is the female author of the renowned Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) which advocates abolitionism and becomes a best seller. The chapter on "The Mother's Struggle" relays the feelings and reactions of a slave-mother whose child is about to be sold. The child belongs to the slave-owner, not the mother, and by law is his property. Eliza flees slavery in an effort to keep her child who is about to be sold. Stowe also points to the hypocrisy of slavery and the denial of Christian principles. All is not lost and Eliza resorts to the Quaker settlement where there reside the most fervent abolitionists, and friends of humanity. Stowe outlines the heavenly temperament of the Quakers in their genuine Christian friendship, compassion on the plight of slaves, and active effort in sheltering fleeing slaves. Eliza plans to cross the border to Canada since after the Fugitive Slave Act (1850) and the Kansas-Arkansas Act (1854). During slavery, Canada becomes the usual destination for runaway slaves especially since after the laws the Kansas-Arkansas Act and the Fugitive Slave Act. These laws stigmatize permanently the slave regardless of location whether in the slaveholding states or free-states. The Underground Railroad, the route by which slaves got to Canada, is a network in which the Quakers are active participants. The chapter on The Martyr relates the story of Uncle Tom's torture and death at the hands of his own slave-master, Legree. Because of the many slave escapes, Uncle Tom is suspected of being an accomplice. The slave-owner's cruelty, ingratitude, and inhumanity are contrasted to Uncle Tom's genuine Christian heart of self-sacrifice, forgiveness, and love.
Harriet Tubman (1820-1913)
Harriet Tubman, born to Ben Ross and Harriet Green in 1820 in Maryland. Although known during her enslavement as Araminta or "Minty", she would be more identified as Harriet, her mother's namesake and subsequently living up to the expectations of this name during her lifetime as she led her entire family to freedom. Notable is the fact that Tubman endured the ravages of cruel inhumanity which drove her to seek liberty. She was beaten so severely that she suffered head injuries causing excruciating migraines and apoplectic fits. All about her body were the bruises and scars attesting to brutal whipping. In spite of these hardships, Tubman also was reported to have been blessed with a prophetic and visionary gift which empowered her to direct others. As the architect of the Underground Railroad, an ex-slave living in America, she had to collude with several abolitionists and spies, even meeting with Mr. Frederick Douglass. She wittily affirms, "I was the conductor of the Underground Railroad for eight years, and I can say what most conductors can't say; I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger.” She engineered a complex network which conveyed runaway slaves due North, to the more liberal Free States. After escaping slavery herself, she could not bear knowing that her family and friends were still in bondage. Therefore, she trailblazed a path, leading hundreds of slaves to freedom. In addition to her emancipatory profile, Tubman also collaborated with the Northern Army, working as an undercover spy and after the war, established a home for senior citizens. In 1850, the Northbound route to freedom had to be modified because of the introduction of the Fugitive Slave Law that compelled all to cooperate with the slaveowner and recapture slaves, whether in the free or slaveholding zones. As a result, the Underground Railroad led runaway slaves to Canada which was decidedly anti-slavery. She lived until the ripe age of 92, when she died from pneumonia among her family, friends and admirers.

Lay Article Analysis: Comparison of Information from Non-professional and Professional Sources
This paper compares information from an article from a lay source to that from two articles on the same topic from a professional source. The information from the lay article is then analyzed using the eight basic structures of thinking stated by Paul and Elder (2016). The main topic of the articles utilized in this paper is the health results from the use of fluoride. The lay article is from Michaels (2011). The professional articles are from Kumar et al. (2018) and Singh and Purohit (2018). The professional sources are considered primary sources of information, while the lay article is considered a tertiary source of information. The analysis of the lay article includes the main ideas, inferences, and implications of the article.
Lay Article Analysis
Lay articles are considered tertiary sources of information that are written by people outside of the professional field. Journalists and professional writers often write them. Often times, no author is named. Lay articles can be decent sources of information, but caution must be used as the information often contains bias as well as misinformation.
According to Paul and Elder (2016), eight basic structures of thinking exist. These include purpose, question, information, inferences, ideas, assumptions, implications, and points of view (Paul and Elder, 2016). Purpose refers to the reason for the writing the article (Paul and Elder, 2016). It involves stating what the author is trying to accomplish in his or her writing (Paul and Elder, 2016).
Question refers to figuring out the key questions that are being addressed by the author in his or her writing (Paul and Elder, 2016). Information involves pointing out the key information that the author uses in order to support his or her arguments in writing (Paul and Elder, 2016). It involves all facts, data, and personal experiences that the author uses to come to his or her own conclusions (Paul and Elder, 2016). Inferences refers to identifying the main conclusions of an author’s article (Paul and Elder, 2016).
Ideas refers to identifying the important ideas and concepts in order to better understand the author’s reasoning in his or her writing (Paul and Elder, 2016). One must then briefly explain what the author’s ideas mean (Paul and Elder, 2016). Assumptions refers to identifying ideas and concepts that the author takes for granted and are usually not stated in the article (Paul and Elder, 2016). The assumptions are concepts that the author thinks do not need to be defended in his or her writing (Paul and Elder, 2016). Implications refers to reflecting on the likely consequences of the public taking or not taking the author’s reasoning seriously (Paul and Elder, 2016). It involves identifying the logical implications of the position of the author, both stated and unstated (Paul and Elder, 2016). Lastly, points of view refers to identifying what the author looks at as well as how he or she sees it (Paul and Elder, 2016). These basic structures of thinking are absolutely essential for the analysis of an author’s work.
Article Review
The lay article that will be discussed is by Michaels (2011). It discusses the author’s point of view on the use of fluoride (Michaels, 2011). According to the author, the use of fluoride presents many health dangers (Michaels, 2011). She states ten main dangers of fluoride (Michaels, 2011). These include accumulation in the body, infertility, the use of fluoride in baby formulas, neurological issues, lower IQ, early puberty, thyroid dysfunction, and arthritis and bone damage as well as bone fractures (Michaels, 2011). The author also gives advice on how to avoid fluoride, including using fluoride free toothpaste, avoiding processed food, filtering tap water, not smoking, and avoiding soda, coffee, or tea served at restaurants (Michaels, 2011).
Two professional articles on the topic of fluoride usage were also analyzed. The first is from a research study done by Singh and Purohit (2018) comparing the effects of preventing caries between high-fluoride toothpaste and standard-fluoride toothpaste. The study involved randomized controlled trials as well as cluster-randomized trials in comparing the efficacy of both high-fluoride and lower-concentration fluoride toothpaste in the prevention of dental caries with at least a six-month follow-up (Singh and Purohit, 2018). The statistical significance p value was set at p The second article involves a study by Kumar et al. (2018) evaluating any associations between fluoride in the body and thyroid dysfunction with delayed tooth eruption in pediatric populations in areas of fluorosis. The study population was split into two groups (Kumar et al., 2018). Group A belonged to an area of endemic fluorosis, while group B belonged to an area of non-endemic fluorosis (Kumar et al., 2018). Group A was used as the experimental group, while group B was used as the control group (Kumar et al., 2018).
Group A was then divided into two subgroups (Kumar et al., 2018). The first group included pediatric subjects with dental fluorosis, and the second group included pediatric subjects without dental fluorosis (Kumar et al., 2018). Blood samples were collected from each group in order to analyze thyroid hormone levels (Kumar et al., 2018). According to the results of the study, thyroid hormone derangement was found to be significantly higher in group A than group B, while delayed tooth eruption was found to be independent of thyroid derangement (Kumar et al., 2018). The results suggested that delayed tooth eruptions and thyroid dysfunction can occur with fluorosis (Kumar et al., 2018).
Discussion
The main difference between the lay article and the professional articles include that actual research studies done by professional scientists were presented in the professional articles, while the lay article merely presented health information while citing professional sources in order to back the information. Also, the lay article was posted in a magazine website, while the professional articles were posted in reputable medical and dental journals. Lastly, the professional articles were peer-reviewed and approved for presentation in the medical and dental journals, while the lay article was not peer-reviewed.
Implications for the lay article include the risks of health misinformation if the article is taken seriously. For example, if the information in the article is followed, there is a chance that the incidence in dental caries may increase. There is also the chance that the health of the public may benefit from the information in the article as well. For example, the rates of infertility as well as thyroid and neurological issues may decrease if the information in the article is utilized by the public.
Implications also exists for if the information in the article is not taken seriously by the public. For example, rates of dental caries may decrease from continued fluoride use if the information in the article is disregarded. Also, there is a chance that health issues, such as thyroid dysfunction, neurological issues, and infertility may continue to increase if the information is ignored.
Conclusion
Overall, a number of risks exist in the use of information from lay articles over professional articles. As stated before, there is risk for misinformation from lay articles. Also, the information in lay articles is more likely to contain bias compared to the information in professional articles. Caution should be taken when utilizing information from lay articles.

When Professional Athletes Turn into Criminals
Almost every American can point out that the National Football League, and football in general is the ideal sport for television. Although, in a 2014 published article in The New York Times, by Neil Irwin, he explains the humanity reality of NFL players- the switch from professional athletes to criminal felonies. In the article, “What the Numbers Show about NFL Players Arrests,” Irwin emphasizes how professional football athletes have repeatedly been on social media networks on the topic of criminal offenses off the field. Irwin clearly establishes his claims with a credible database for the arrests and logically reasoning; however, his credibility is questionable, and he lacks appealing to the audience’s emotions and not being factually sound weakens his credibility and argument overall. In the article, Irwin introduces his argument with the Ray Rice domestic assault as an example of the many NFL arrests that happen. Irwin continues by describing drunk driving and domestic violence are the most frequently reported form of arrests of these professional athletes.
Furthermore, Irwin focuses on the highest arrests, the franchises with the most arrests, and the numbers concerning the arrests. Irwin also makes the conclusion that the teams with the highest number of arrest in earlier years, have the pattern of high arrests rates in the years to come. Possible causes of this, Irwin suggests, the possible network and communication between the top management of the franchise discussing their negotiable or non-negotiable illegal behaviors of the players and the geographic of the players. In the beginning of his article, Irwin uses a credible source to strengthen the argument and appeal to logos, as well as building his argument. The database is the USA Today, titled, NFL Player Arrests. The database is constructed from date, description, and the outcome the of offense by the player. Citing this source exhibits Irwin’s diligence of providing facts and solid examples to support his claim.
He later designed a graphic table demonstrating the most common arrests these players commit. Throughout the article, Irwin’s details and numbers build an appeal to logos and impress upon the reader that this is a problem worth discussing. Irwin lacks to build his credibility throughout the article to appeal to ethos. Neil Irwin is a economics journalist who writes analysis about politics, economics, and other areas of daily life. Yet, sports is not an area he specializes in particularly (About Niel, 2015). No where in the article did Irwin construct his credibility for writing this article. Additionally, Irwin argument is structurally sound, yet he fails to cite his sources. Concerning the cause of the arrest rate decreasing in 2014, Irwin explains in the article, “we don’t know whether more NFL players were being arrested in those years, or whether TMZ and other outlets were better positioned to found out about it.” (Irwin,2014) In this quote, Irwin credibility is weakened due to the fact of mentioning, TMZ as a valid resource for news broadcasting. Throughout the article, Irwin states facts, without substantiating and citing where he retrieved the information from. Without clear citation of the information that was provided in the article, it was difficult to trust what exactly he is trying to prove. This damages the strength and his credibility of the argument. Along with not successfully building his credibility, Irwin also avoids the creating emotion between the audience.
Instead, Irwin only uses the strategy of logos, yet does not cite his sources. Though Irwin begins the article by effectively stating facts and statistics of these players, Irwin weakens his argument by not citing his sources, and not appealing to the audience emotions. Readers can understand the issue of crime frequently being committed by NFL players.

The all American Girls Professional Baseball League
When World War II began, several roles previously occupied by men were left empty; including mens sports. Women stepped up to the plate and filled the shoes of the men. The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League changed the players’ lives as well as affected women's sports for future generations by the way it was founded and run.
As the war went on, men's baseball leagues took a toll for the worst. Many people at home were trying to support the soldiers at war, so they rarely had time to go see a ball game. Work hours were extended so no one had time to do anything else. Fans couldn't get to the ballpark because people were limited on gas to save it for the military. People didn't like seeing men playing when the same men could be out fighting in the war, so half or even more major league players went to war. William Wrigley Jr. was the owner of the Cubs at the time and he thought that baseball would have to end. Baseball commissioner Landis wanted to suspend baseball for the period of the war because he was scared he wouldn't make any profit. In January 1942, President Roosevelt wanted Landis to keep baseball going to keep people's hopes up in that time of war.
Wrigley knew he had to make money somehow so he came up with a great idea to let girls play. If Rosie the Riveter could do anything, she probably could play baseball. Wrigley knew that girls wanted to play because even before the war he had ladies day at his field. In the winter of 1942, Wrigley put his plan in place. Wrigley knew that this league could make money for the period of the war. Wrigley wanted his players to portray a more feminine characteristic or talent like cookie decorating. When Wrigley made The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League he wanted the teams to play in smaller cities since everyone had to save on gas but some teams wouldn't let women use their stadiums. Even though Wrigley ran into some challenges along the way, the league's success surprised everyone.
William Wrigley Jr. set out to find the players he believed would save baseball from ending. Hamilton, a scout who worked for Wrigley, was put in charge to go and find the talent that Wrigley was looking for. Hamilton knew that parents were going to be scared for their daughters who were only teens to their early twenties and most of them had never really gone out of their hometown. So he would take the family out to dinner to explain to them that they knew that these girls were young so they would have chaperones by them always. After the parents gave their approval the girls were off to the tryouts. In May of 1943, 280 women made it to the tryouts but only 64 came out of it. This was a stressful time for the girls because any day of the tryout their future career could end. After this, they went to a training camp. In newspapers when they found out who made it, they said, “Recruits were selected almost as much for their physical appearance and character as they were for their playing ability”( Yomtov 35).
Wrigley still wanted a feminine appearance while playing baseball so he gave a list of what the player's images should be which was healthy, glamorous, fit, enthusiastic, vigor, and have a good personality all around. In 1943, to achieve his goal, Wrigley made the girls take a class taught by Helena Rubenstein to learn about manners, makeup, what was the proper way to dress, how to properly speak, and how to sit upright. If even after this class the girls couldn't follow this image they were given penalties; ten dollars for talking back to the umpires and fifty dollars if they were looking sloppy out in public. This meant they had to follow strict rules: twear a skirt, hair down to their collar, no drinking or smoking, social activities had to be approved by management, follow curfew rules-which meant being in bed 2 hours after they played a game. The most important rule was to always behave like ladies. Wrigley took it even further “ In the team's home cities, the players would live with local families to further enhance the clean-cut image Wrigley wished to portray” (Yomtov 35 ). The final designs of the ladies uniforms were finished by Mrs.Wrigley and they were more feminine. The uniforms were long dresses with the pastel colors of green, blue, yellow, and peach. “ Newspaper writers, finally able to report their own observations, joked that these charming ambassadors would win games by batting their eyes at the umpires” ( Helmer 22).
After all the rules were set for these players, they were chosen to go and play for one of the four teams which consisted of the Rockford peaches, The South Bend Indiana Blue Sox, The Wisconsin Belles, and the Wisconsin Comets. Even though they were assigned to a certain team, they could always be reassigned to a different team to equal out the talent. The players would get paid a lot because they were constantly playing games, so their salaries were about $45- $85 plus their expenses. The profits made during this time went to worthy causes from 1943 until 1945. The teams did lots of promotional efforts. They let servicemen go to the games for free, some games would be played at army training camps and veterans hospitals, and players would visit injured soldiers (Houts 24).
This career was a serious opportunity. They not only did it to have fun, and get out of their parents' house for a little bit, but also to become part of history. Some players were very committed to the sport like Dottie Colling, even though she was pregnant she continued pitching. Bonnie Baker, who was at first just a player, became the first woman to manage a girls' professional baseball league. The strong passion for the sport is amazing, but what is most amazing is the dedication in spite of there were so many changes throughout the season. No one knew how the girls did it. For example, this league was first formed to be a softball league with some rules based on baseball thrown in somewhere. It had underhand pitching (like softball), 9 innings (like baseball), the ball was 12 inches (smaller than a softball but larger than a baseball), 9 players on a field (like baseball), and bases were spread 70 feet apart ( smaller than baseball larger than softball) ( Hanmer 31). There were also three different names that were put in place for the league, these names consisted of The All-American girls Softball League, The All-American Girls Baseball, and the final name The all-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
The first season began in 1943 and after one year nearly one million fans came to watch these women. In 1944 Wrigley added two cities, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. The teams who made it to the playoffs that year were Kenosha and Milwaukee. Milwaukee won it. That would be their last game because after that, due to bad attendance, Milwaukee Chicks had to stop playing. In 1945, there were six teams due to the new addition on Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Daisies. In 1946, there were eight teams but the boys began coming back home from the war. In 1948, there were ten teams. In 1949, veterans started leaving because of the lack of attendance and support. After the boys came home the attendance dropped and in 1952 only six teams played. Things were going downhill for this league.
Due to lack of support after the boys came home from war, Wrigley was forced to sell his league to Meyerhoff’s Manage for $10,000. Many teams were losing money and some went bankrupt. According to Margot Galt, since we had “... a prosperous economy, many Americans didn't need hometown sports for cheap entertainment anymore”. That's why the girls league started to fall apart. In 1950, teams didn’t want to have Mayerhoff’s Manage Corporation managing them because they thought that they were causing all of the financial problems. The teams voted and decided that he wasn't going to be managing them anymore.
On June 23, 1952, some people in charge weren't going to let women play in the major leagues anymore. This is when the girls knew that the men had closed the doors on women's baseball. This was a good run for these women because they went twelve seasons that lasted from 1943 to 1954. But after it had ended these women never really mentioned that they were part of that kind of history. According to Lois Browne, the women had kept newspapers to remind themselves of their accomplishments and their progress during the seasons. Some of these women didn't want to stop playing sports, so they would do golf, softball, bowling, or they would become physical education teachers. Around 1950-1960, opportunities for women were minimal, so it was hard on the players to go from being famous and successful, to having no job at all.
In 1972, it was a big step in the right direction for women because of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. It demanded that no one could be discriminated against when playing sports because of gender (Brown 8). After this came out, in 1982 the former players founded the All-American Girls Players. In 1988 finally, in Cooperstown, New York, in the Hall of fame, they made an exhibit for the women who played for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. That same year Director Penny Marshall directed a movie called A League of Their Own. These incredible women had inspired many generations to come because in 1944 a new baseball team was formed and from then on girls were treated equally in sports.
The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League changed the players’ lives as well as affected women's sports for future generations by the way it was founded and run. We now know how a step in the right direction can make a huge effect on women's sports. Wrigley had an idea, implemented it, and it turned out to be more than anyone expected. Although it lasted only twelve years, it made an impact on the role women had in society.

Differences between Professional Athletes and Amateurs
There are various differences between professional athletes andamateurs. Such as dietary habit, exercise duration time, injury and so on. In this essay, I’ll briefly talk about these three aspects with help of Internet.
First of all, I’ll talk about the dietary habit. There is an easy mistake that an amateur would make, that is consuming too much sugar. Too much sugar that a body can’t absorb would increase the burden of the body’s digestive system. On the contrary, a professional athlete eats properly. A professional athlete will limit the absorption of calories, and choose the kind of meat to eat. For example, a professional athlete will eat chicken rather than pork, because chicken contain more protein and more easier that a body can digest and absorb. A professional athlete has a correct diet which makes him healthier.
Next, I’ll talk about the exercise duration time. As for an amateur, it depends on how much he like the sport and how much spare time he has. For a professional athlete, there will be a schedule that he must follow. And of course, the high of a career depends on how much he has paid. Some athletes such as Kobe Bryant will spend much more time than the others, which makes him always in good condition. Generously, professional athletes have more exercise duration time than an amateur, which makes them professional.
In this paragraph, I’ll talk about the injury. As a professional athlete, he will have a higher risk to severely get injured than an amateur. And a severe injury influences a professional much more than an ordinary people, some injuries might cause permanent damage, which will bury a professional athlete’s career. Instead, a severe injury might not infect an ordinary people’s career but daily life. Some athlete retied because of an injury. Injury does destroy some of the athletes’ dream. Brandon Roy, an NBA player, retired because of torn ligament. He is a talented player but early leave the professional basketball. He didn’t even get to his peak. What a loss! There are so many players like Brandon Roy retire at a young age. And many players loss or miss an important game due to injury. Hope there will not be injury no more!
Let me draw a brief conclusion. A professional athlete has a healthier diet than an amateur. Professional athletes’ exercise duration time are longer to make them in good condition and competitive. Professional athletes have a higher risk to severely get injured.

Professional Outlook and Development Marine Biologist
A marine biologist is a professional who studies plants and animals residing in the ocean to understand several biological factors including their behavior, characteristics, and ecosystem. Karleskint noted that they assess how various species interact with each other and how human life potentially impacts them. Their work is essential for various purposes including conservation, science establishment, and breeding cultivation. Some of the aspects they pay a closer look at include reproduction and specimen population. As an essential job in the ecological sphere, it would be imperative to assess it with regards to growth rate, salary and benefits, and the educational requirements.
First, it is vital to appreciate that a marine biologist is scientists that can work in the same area as wildlife biologists and zoologists. They study the living organisms, their ecology, and fundamental life processes. Marine biologists can also work as limnologists who specialize in working in the organisms living in the fresh water. Marine biologists can be found either working in the laboratory for their biochemical processes or they can also be found at sea conducting observations and further research. With regards to educational requirements, marine biology requires extensively qualified personnel with most holding a doctoral degree. The doctoral education plays a vital role in equipping the professional with genomic, physiological, evolutionary, organismic, and biochemical processes of the saltwater organisms. The intense educational qualification helps an individual to understand the relationship between the organism, their environment, and various life processes. The Ph.D. programs further enable an individual to specialize in various fields including deep-sea biology, photobiology, high-pressure biology, vertebrate biology, and microbiology among others (Karleskint 123).
Regarding the prospects of the job and employment opportunities, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) postulates that employment of biologists including the marine biologists is expected to rise by a paltry 4% between 2014 and 2024. It, therefore, means that the job growth in this industry is lower than the average of all the occupations in the country. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also reported in 2010 that employment in the field of marine biology is very competitive. The federal and state governments provide a majority of jobs in this field, but still, there is a massive shortage of jobs in the country. Other employers of these professionals include the university research facilities, aquariums, and consulting firms. The median salary for marine biologists, including wildlife biologists and zoologists as of 2015 was at $59,680.
Nursing
Hoeve et al. illustrate that the role of the registered nurses (RN) is to promote health, help patients to cope with illnesses, and also prevent diseases. They are not only advocates but also health educators for the patient, their families, and the community at large (295-296). They provide direct care to the patient through observation and assessment of patient symptoms, reactions, and progress. Also, they assist physicians during treatments, surgeries, examination, and also in the administration of drugs. Furthermore, they assist the patients in convalescence and the process of rehabilitation. There are different types of nurses depending on where they work. They include hospital nurses, office nurses, and nurse practitioners among many others. Therefore nursing is regarded as one of the most important jobs in the country due to its impact on the health of the citizens. In this regard, it would be necessary to assess its job requirements, salaries and benefits, and job prospects.
For one to become a nurse, they can take one of the following paths including a bachelor’s degree, an associate’s degree, or a diploma from an approved institution and program. Additionally, all registered nurses must be licensed. In either of the programs, one would be required to take several courses including microbiology, nutrition, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and psychology. A bachelor’s degree program will have additional courses in social and physical sciences, critical thinking, communication, and leadership. Regarding the career prospects, employment of nurses was projected to grow by 19% from 2012 to 2022 (Hoeve et al. 300). As such, the growth would be faster than all occupations in the US. Some of the factors that will prompt the growth include the emphasis on preventive care and the increased demand for health services across the nation. According to a job report released in 2017, the US job economy created 222,000 new jobs with health care alone taking 37,000 new jobs out of the total hence showing positive signs for nurses' employment in the future. In 2015, the BLS released statistics that the employment of nurses is projected to grow by 16% between 2014 and 2024.
Juraschek, Stephen et al. asserted that Nurses enjoy an average salary of $64,000 across the country. The average salaries for posting are also relatively high compared to other professionals with a difference of 7%. The top 10% in the nursing profession earn approximately $94,000 and above. However, one must have extensive experience in the field coupled with advanced education such as a master’s degree in nursing. Government employees are the highest earners followed by others in the private institutions. The lowest paid nurses are those working in the doctor’s offices. Additionally, nurses enjoy benefits depending on the state they work that might include house, risk allowance, extraneous, and uniform allowance among others.
Psychiatry
The role of a psychiatrist is to diagnose, analyze, treat, and prevent the possibility of human mental, behavioral, and emotional disorder. They assess the patients' mental and physical condition to determine the extent and nature of their mental, behavioral, and emotional disorders. They also order laboratory tests, neuropsychological tests, imaging, and scans among other diagnostic procedures. Furthermore, they are instrumental in prescribing and administering drugs, psychotherapy, physical treatments, and other rehabilitation programs. They are also vital in a legal and forensic setting where they assist the courts and statutory bodies in providing expert opinion. There are several ways of securing a career in the field of psychiatry. Riese, Florian, et al. pointed out that the main one and the most recommended is to obtain a bachelor's degree and a further two years hospital-based training. Additionally, another five years specialist training and study is recommended. Most workers in this field generally possess a post-graduate qualification. Registration and licensing are required.
With regards to the job prospects, psychiatry is a small profession that employs a paltry 28,200 workers. Also, the number of workers has fallen in the past five years. However, Hayward noted that the BLS postulates that the number of workers is expected to grow in the next five years by around 15% (1891). The workforce is also composed of mature individuals with an average of 57 years compared to the country’s average which is at 40 years. Therefore, this further makes it difficult for new entrants who would like to be employed. A 2016 report showed that the unemployment rate in this field was below average. Like physicians, psychiatrists enjoy a high salary. The BLS reported that the median salary for these professionals was at $182,700 in 2014. The lowest paid psychiatrist could still manage a decent salary of $61,600 per year. With regards to the employer, those working at the outpatient facilities enjoy the highest salaries which could go up to $196,000. Those working for the local governments also managed to get a higher pay package of about $195,510. Some of the states that pay high wages in this field include Wyoming, Alaska, Indiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Just like many health professionals, they enjoy additional benefits such as extraneous, health, and holiday allowances among others.

The Influence of Pride on the Hero in the Story “The Hunger Artist”
At the beginning of the story, the hunger artist is at the height of his popularity. He is drawing huge crowd to his performances and hopes to be best hunger artist ever. Despite, his success, the hunger artist is dissatisfied because he does not have complete control over his performance. His manager adds drama to please the taste of the audience. Suddenly, the hunger artist is no longer popular. Audience is not interested in watching a starving guy in a cage. The manager and artist tour throughout Europe, trying to find an audience , but they have no luck. No longer popular artist fires his manager and joins the circus, where he is just now a sideshow. The exotic animals are way more popular. While, in the beginning the artist still had some hope that someone would appreciate his act, it become clear that no one really cares. Most spectators who pass by his cage are in a hurry to get to animal menagerie. As time goes, the artist loses tracks of the days. He finally beats his forty days record, but no one, not even himself, knows exactly how long he has starved. The hunger artist entirely disappears from the public eye. The circus manager notices the artist cage, where the weakened artist is buries beneath some straw. In a final twist, a young panther replaces the artist. The panther is hugely popular with the crowds. The fact that at this point in time, the crowd prefers the panther over the artist makes his death seem even more pathetic.
Influence from reality: ‘A Hunger Artist’ is partially based on the real historical phenomenon of ‘professional fasting’. Breon Mitchell, in his article ‘Kafka and the hunger artist’ has brought to the light the history of a world famous hunger artist whose coverage in local newspaper may have inspired Kafka’s story. Mitchell points out that “almost every detail of Kafka’s story corresponds with reality is so close that Kafka could not possibly have written the tale without some direct or indirect knowledge of the best known hunger artist of his time”. The profession of ‘Professional fasting’ lasted from 1880- 1922, roughly the years of kafka’s lifespan. The first professional fast was accomplish by Dr. Henry Tanner , an American who was said to have gone for forty days under medical observation without food. The most famous of European imitators was Giovanni Succi on whom Kafka’s story was most likely to based. Giovanni performed for at least 30 different times upto 30 days in various European cities. Although not cages, but these hunger artist were generally displayed in some kind of confinement. However, in general these professional fasters had normal body types and looked relatively healthy both before and after their fasts. In light of this Kafka may have combined a different type of entertainer with the professional fasters in creating his character.
Analysis: starved for attention The problem with public spectacle is often that its flame of enticement burns out over time. This premise serves as the central focus in, A Hunger Artist. The author depicts the hunger artist’s eventual downfall through themes of isolation to society and his extreme hubris that only further separates him and makes his reasoning and ambition even more misunderstood by his spectators. The hunger artist relationship with humanity is weakened severely as time progresses. Within the text Kafka repeatedly mentions the hunger artist detachment through themes of isolation. He states, ‘ so he lived for many years, with small regular intervals of recuperation , in visible glory , honored by the world, yet in spite of that, troubled in spirit, and all the more troubled because no-one would take his trouble seriously’. Even though he is first glorified by the world for his spectacle, the lack of understanding for what it takes to do, what does make him uneasy in his mind and spirit knowing that the public is celebrating him for something they can neither comprehend nor relate to. Because they cannot comprehend what his talent takes, they are not fully fazed by what they see since they cannot appreciate the spectacle. Kafka illustrates this as: “…. and no one had any cause to be dissatisfied with the proceedings , no one except the hunger artist himself, he only as always”.
Isolation goes hand in hand with pride, a fact best demonstrated by the way in which the artist isolates himself due to his determination to accomplish his goals and focus only on his artistic purpose. So it is ultimately his excessive pride that fuels the public diminishing opinion of him. Kafka illustrates this immense ego in the following quote, “ he was ready to exchange jokes with them to tell them stories out of his nomadic life, anything at all to make them anything at all to keep them awake and demonstrate to them again that he had not eatables in his cage and that he was fasting as not one of them could fast here”, he brags about his abilities that his on lookers clearly do not possess. Despite the fact that his immense pride isolates him from society, it is also what allows him to push himself further and starve himself until a point where his talent becomes second nature on him leaving one to wonder that if something becomes so innate, is it even really a talent at all anymore or perhaps merely a learned behavior, born out of a need for acceptance and adulation. In “A Hunger Artist” two key themes, isolation and pride becomes readily apparent and ultimately lead to the artist’s demise. By understanding these themes and their relevance to the story, the reader is able to both empathize with and condemn the main character; as he allows pride in his talent to consume him and further isolate him from society.
Apart from the artist’s hubris, Kafka is trying to make some kind of hidden commentary. First of all, artist that is kept in “cage” often represent “restriction” and also there is a manager who is making money by the art of the artist. We have the artist who live their miserable lives in the society are taken advantage of by manager to sacrifice their physical needs for their art. And to conclude this, Franz Kafka was a big critic of the capitalist system at one point he even said that it is a system of mutual enslavement from top to bottom and this is harsh cry to humanity to stop living by strictly utilitarian principles of weighing pros and cons of a decision without taking into account our humanity. This is seen when the impresario after 40 days makes hunger artist stop not for humanitarian reasons but purely economic and when people lost interest in the hunger artist they simply let him die.

Conflicting Themes of Pride and Humility
As I was sitting there staring at my computer screen waiting for some divine bit of inspiration, I closed my eyes brimming with hope (or desperation I will allow you to determine which) and let the book fall open to a random page. To my immediate disappointment, it fell over on its side, closed. But then I began to read the back, it has a short description of Milton and then it states, “Paradise Lost’s apparent ambivalence towards authority has led to intense debate about whether it manages to justify the ways of God to men or exposes the cruelty of Christianity. ' This prompted a flood of questions in my mind. Isn't trying to justify the ways of God to man well, just a bit assuming of man’s comprehensive ability? Yet in the opening lines of the poem Milton states that he is attempting to “justify the ways of God to man”. In all fairness, he does not claim to understand the mind of God. Through blank verse and device Milton illustrates creation, the fall of Lucifer, and the fall of man. What has caught my interest are the warring themes of pride and humility throughout each text.
What exactly is humility? Is it a way of acting? If it is only a way of acting, do we then call a man humble by his observable actions without also knowing if his intentions match? How could we know? If one’s actions could be described as humble, does this necessitate a humble mind? For if we are to truthfully call a man humble by nature, he must be humble in his entirety. Surely, we would not say that a man that only eats like a pig departs from our species and should now be classified under our taxonomy as a pig. Thus, whatever way in which the man acts is merely an indication to the state of his mind. When the observable actions of a man are to a degree consistent, we assume this is the fruit of a humble mind and it is after this, we then label a man, humble.
Are you humble? If you say yes, does that then make you correct in your proper presumption of yourself or has your answer led you to a thick fog? A fog that conceals the border between humility and pride. Let us first understand that humility and pride are explicitly human concepts. No one would expect a butterfly to pen a self-help book and call it From Humble Beginnings. Jesting aside, the beautiful and powerful gift of free will is packaged with certain questions to be pondered that are essential to fulfill our desire to aim toward the Good. We are going to be examining Paradise Lost by John Milton and The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis to better understand the nature and relation between pride and humility and man and God.
Why humility? Why use our free will, “the gift whereby (we) most resemble our maker” (Lewis 141) to live in humility? In light of Christian theology and these two texts, we will explore the what, why and how of humility. True humility is properly understanding one’s value in relation to God and fellow man. Anything more is pride and anything less, which most people would call self-deprecation, is also pride.
First, to better comprehend what humility is, we must first look at how one understands their own value in relation to the Truth. The beginning of humility is to put aside oneself and seek this. In C.S. Lewis's The Great Divorce, the ghosts that arrive in heaven from “hell” are each eventually met by Solids. The Solids are spirits who have matured in their desire for God. In fact, the guiding spirits have “interrupted that journey and retraced immeasurable distances to come down today on the mere chance of saving some Ghosts”(Lewis Need #). The Solids themselves who have long pressed into the mountains now return, so that maybe one ghost may be saved. They leave their own pursuit, in hope that another may also experience the Grace in the mountains. Already, one can see that it is in the nature of the solids to put aside themselves for the sake of bringing more people to Truth. The Solids first thought is not about their own glory nor how convenient a thing may be. Quite the opposite, the journey back “is also joy to do so”(Lewis need #) “ The journey into the mountains is a journey of Truth, but first the ghosts much choose to take the first step. While searching for evidence that ghosts could remain in this solid place, our narrator stumbles across the well dressed woman. He first observes her attempting to hide herself in shadows.
A solid then finds and confronts her offering help. The ghost however, exclaims repeatedly,” I want to be left alone!”. The ghostly form inspires shame in the woman, so much so that she states she would rather die than be seen. The solid tries to help by showing the ghost that once she can look past the shame, infinite happiness is waiting. The ghost exhibits a minute instant of attempt but laments and cries for the solid to leave. The solid offers,” Could you only for a moment fix your mind on something not yourself?” The solid understands that the ghost is too focused on herself to comprehend the truth that her shame and self-hatred blind her. If she could think for a moment of something not herself, she could take the first step towards Truth. In light of the ghost’s stubbornness, the solid attempts a last-ditch effort to redirect her mind. He blows a horn which summons a herd of thundering unicorns. All in hopes that the great clamor and awe-inspiring image of these fantastic beasts incites the ghost’s mind to remove itself from its self-loathing. The narrator does not witness the end of this exchange as his nerves cause him to flee. The spirit offers to her the road of humility but can only leave it to her to step “into infinite happiness”. Once one takes this first step it becomes necessary to refocus the object of attention to Truth.
Our narrator eventually moves on from the startling encounter with the herd of unicorns but still has many queries for his guide, MacArthur. Together, the pair observe another interaction, this time the ghost is an artist. The artist takes in the heavenly landscape and desires nothing more than to paint it. The solid observes that he has lost sight of the reason why he enjoyed painting in the first place. He tries explaining to the ghost that there is no longer a need to share imitation of heaven since everyone has the opportunity to see and enjoy it for themselves. He notes the artists first love was light and his inspiration was imitating nature so that others may enjoy little glimpses of heaven (Lewis 83). This love became perverted into a vain desire. This desire to paint no longer was based in love and selfless intention, but in painting in for its own sake. The artist was then led astray into further perversion by the love he gained for his reputation. The solid explains that he has experienced the process himself. He tells the ghost that he was too interested in his own personality and reputation to care about the cause of the enjoyment in painting. However, there is a complete remedy for this, in the mountains when one partakes of the fountain it allows one to forget all proprietorship forever. “You enjoy them just as if they were someone else’s: without pride and without modesty”.
True humility, necessitates a lack of self-entitlement. What does this imply? It means that no one is distinguished, in the sense that no more Glory is given to one than another. “Glory flows into everyone, and back from everyone” (Lewis 86). This is the next tenet of humility. Understanding that none is more glorified than another. There is one Glory that is offered to all and it must be understood that it is this in which all men have their identity. None of the solids in heaven are distinguished because they are all famous. “They are all known, remembered, recognized by the only Mind that can give a perfect judgement” (Lewis 86). One does not have to be known, remembered, or recognized by even friends or family to share in this Glory. This is the Truth, the realization is that none can count himself above another since they have nothing to boast of themselves. It would be like a leaf on a branch of a great oak proclaiming how self-sufficient it was. Then when a breeze comes and removes it from the branch it is at the mercy of the wind and no longer has hope of life.
To only understand that Glory shares itself equally amongst men is only a part of the Truth. Now that the focus is removed from the self, we have found in the transitionary blur that man cannot exalt himself; thus, man needs a new focal point. The leaf needs to understand its relation to the tree: to understand that the tree is not a part of the leaf but the leaf is a part of the tree and can only be sustained by it. The whole of humility can be extrapolated from John Milton’s Paradise Lost. The humble man is he who both acknowledges and serves God in his thoughts and actions. During the angelic war, Michael and Lucifer have a brief duel in which Michael easily wounds Lucifer causing him to make hasty retreat. Whilst Satan lay there recovering his “pride humbled by such rebuke, so far beneath / His confidence to equal God in power” (Milton VI.341-43). Satan’s pride is humbled when he finds his power to be so far below God’s. He had infatuated his heart with much power and passion but this was only deception; the Truth exists in the proper fear of God. The acknowledgement of His sovereignty and power is one of the final parts of what comprises humility but there is one more aspect. Raphael reveals to Adam in the garden that he must, 'be strong, live happy and love, but first of all / Him whom to love is to obey” (Milton VIII.634-35). Acknowledging power is one matter but to submit oneself to the agent is a different matter. Man tends to have a spirit of self-sufficiency. This is extremely prominent in our modern culture and our country. The idea of submission and subservience is generally foreign to us. These are, however, qualities which result from a proper understanding of one’s self in relation to God. God after all has created man from the dust of the earth. Coincidentally, the root of humility in the Latin comes from humus meaning earth which then developed into humilis meaning on the ground or lowly. The frame of man, a creation, formed from the ground, given breath, not of his own doing, yet made in such a way that allows him to choose to live a humble life in light of Truth.
Pride then, must be rooted in deceit as was briefly mentioned before. It is a misunderstanding of one’s rank in relation to fellow man and God: to either neither acknowledge that Glory flows equally into and back from everyone or the sovereignty of the Godhead. During Lucifer’s pre-war gathering, on Mammon, one of Lucifer’s officers, speaks for a general fraction of the forces of Satan.
This is much worse than just the leaf despising the tree, it is as if it also despises water and light. The greatest rebellion known begins with a thought outside of humility. Similarly, one can observe Satan’s envy of the Son’s throne and contempt for the Godhead.
Lucifer believed that he was truly more worthy and powerful than the Son. If Lucifer’s belief were true, he would have humbly been taking the position that was his. However, because the Son is truly the worthiest, Lucifer’s belief amounts to Pride. As Lucifer surveys his army composed of one third of the fallen angels, 'his heart distends with pride” (Milton I.571-2). His heart, as he beholds what he thinks to be the power of the victorious side, brims with overconfidence in his ability and vanity. He has deceived himself! The crux of the matter lies in where one chooses to set his focus. It is as if one held their finger at arm's length. Fixing their eyes on their finger and slowly bringing it to their face causes a shift in perspective. The closer the object of the focus is, the blurrier the surroundings become. Pride exists in the mind which thinks or comes to believe that the Glory offered to it, is of themselves.
Satan laments and spites his once so glorious state. Even he understands the reason for his fall. His “pride and worse ambition” lead him to try to glory in glory that was not his for the glorying. His focus slowly drew closer and closer to himself making it increasingly difficult to perceive the Truth. He confesses it was an “unbounded hope” (Milton IV.60) Which drove him to ambition. When his perspective changed from seeing the hope for himself to the hope being of himself, he had already fallen. The whole matter of Pride is summed in some of the most famous lines from Milton spoken by Satan,” 'Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven”. He would now despise serving in heaven because of this ambitious, deceived view of himself.
The wise words of Raphael to Eve advise her to only dwell on what concerns herself and her own being. Satan wanted nothing more than more for himself and greater glory for his being not realizing it was too far above that which he was created for. However, the most perplexing part of it all is that it is all made possible through the Creator’s gift of free will.

Review of the Work “Pride Mathilde Loisel”
In Fellow de Psychological's 'The Jewelry' Mathilde Loisel, a professional class housewife, fantasizes about driving a genuine presence of wealth. Loisel is a satisfied woman. She feels herself 'considered for all of the treats and all of the luxuries'. Since she was normally acquainted with a cushy class family, she needs access to the comforts of a high societyIn Fellow de Maupassant's 'The Jewelry' Mathilde Loisel, a professional class housewife, fantasizes about driving a genuine presence of wealth. Loisel is a satisfied woman. She feels herself 'considered for all of the treats and all of the luxuries'. Since she was normall life. Envisioning that her greatness should pick up her a higher place in general society field, she is discontent. She quit seeing her well off past colleague 'since she persevered relentlessly when she returned.' Seeing Mme. Forestier, whom Loisel had once observed as a sidekick, in a higher financial prosperity than herself dismays Loisel. She tries to appear to others with the ultimate objective to make up for her contempt for her social class. She dresses as stunningly as could sensibly be normal, adhering to the dream that 'Trademark fineness, sense for what is rich, suppleness of brain, are the sole hierarchy of leadership, and make from women of the all inclusive community the reciprocals of the to a great degree most important ladies'. In any case, after she goes to the ball her life slants slipping as commitment on the necklace constrains her into poverty. Consistently she gets the open door keep up a key separation from or right her issues with the jewelry, and anyway the unassuming course of action is moreover the best plan in the two cases, she mopes absurdly over vanity's motivation. She settles on the choices she does in light of the way that her pride won't empower her to accomplish something different.
Loisel's pride influences her to submit her first mistake in a matter of moments before the ball. Concentrated on the conviction that 'there's nothing more humiliating than to look poor around different women who are rich,' she picks that to just have a dress isn't adequate. She unveils to her significant other that she needs jewels. So she asks her old school buddy (whom she by and large keeps up a vital separation from) if she can get a gems, which to the degree she knows may be worth thirty-six thousand francs. She uses this jewelry at the ball, hitting the move floor with other men than her significant other, while he rests in the back room. Between the hours in a swarmed get together lobby and the long walk around find a taxi in the night, it was in no way far-fetched that the evidently critical extra would have been stolen. Despite whether the jewelry is stolen or basically lost, it is in actuality lost. Had she stopped to think, Loisel may have comprehended that there was some danger in acquiring an extra that she thought was so expensive. In like manner, the impression she makes at the ball would not likely have much bearing on her life later on. Her refusal to wear ordinary roses shows to us that one of her most recognizably awful sentiments of anxiety is to appear to be poor. Along these lines to deflect harm to her pride she makes a wager in which winning will convey near nothing, and losing, notwithstanding the way that the likelihood of such is ignored, has outstanding outcomes.
Loisel's pride makes her make another screw up after she loses the gems. To buy time she deceives. Forestier, telling that the adornment is being modified. At whatever point Mme. Loisel in the end can't recover the frill she and her significant other endeavor into the red and buy another, focusing on that. Forestier would 'have taken Loisel for a criminal'. The obvious decision is for Loisel to uncover to Forestier reality. Forestier would then have had the ability to uncover to her that the adornment was a fake. Loisel does not know this, yet rather even so Forestier would not likely take her old school buddy for a cheat. Without a doubt, it is possible that she may have assented to pay a touch of the commitment, or give Loisel board as a specialist. Loisel surrenders to ten years of drudgery to go without having an old sidekick, whom she could manage without, call her a criminal.
Along these lines Loisel accept the commitment to strengthen her pride, a comparative pride which puts her into her issue, and decreases to allow her to out. She takes it on 'with gallantry,' to convince herself that she is a good person. In her eyes it is the not too bad game plan. She talks again to Forestier, after the commitment is paid. Presently Loisel feels safe. Forestier can neither pity Loisel, who may feel put down, nor would she have the capacity to loathe Loisel, in which case she would be irritated. She returns triumphantly to her old friend smiling 'with a joy which was both happy and straightforward at once' . She tells Forestier of her remarkable hardship, expecting recognition. In any case, her carelessness is out of the blue revealed to her with a singular announcement: 'Generous, my poor Mathilde! Why the gems was stick. It was worth at most five hundred francs!'
Mathilde Loisel's conclusive thrashing is caused by her pride. It influences her to be hopeless for the duration of regular day to day existence. It influences her to put it all out there. It doesn't empower her to make reasonable move in curing her blunder. Likewise, it decays to let her see her own one of a kind foolishness. Madame Loisel blames her worry on Madame Forestier, anyway she can't for the most part blame anyone with the exemption for herself.

The Influence of Pride on an Example Lance Armstrong
The Olympic Games bring more than 11,000 elite athletes together every summer and winter, creating excitement in fans worldwide. With competitive individuals striving for excellence, comes many others who choose to find success in other ways, such as taking drugs to enhance their performance or causing others harm. For example, Lance Armstrong, an American professional cyclist, secretly doped throughout a significant part of his career in order to maintain his top status. However, his scandals stripped him of seven “Tour de France” titles and damaged his cancer foundation. Armstrong’s pride permanently ruined his reputation and led him to his destruction. Such is the case in Bernard Evslin’s book Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths.
According to Greek mythology, hubris is the most egregious moral failure. Vanity paves the way to an inevitable downfall. Mortals who choose to be prideful ultimately regret their actions and ruin their life. For example, Arachne boasts about her weaving skills and pride becomes the culprit of her death. After Athena hears the praises of Arachne ‘rising above her own, she rebukes her the foolish girl saying, “Poor child. You are being destroyed by your own worth. Your talent has poisoned you with pride like the sting of a scorpion”. Arachne’s audacious remarks cause her distress as a consequence of slandering the goddess of women’s crafts. Similarly, Icarus, who recently acquired the power of flight, becomes caught up in his success. Intoxicated by the feeling of superiority, Icarus crosses the line of moderation and plummets to his destruction. When he witnesses a great swan flying high and proudly in the sky above him, “Ha…” he thought to himself. “Those things have been flying all their lives. Wait till I get a little practice. I’ll outfly them all”. Icarus’ attempts to exceed nature’s boundaries ends up surpassing the life-supporting limits of the human body. Conceit gets the best of Arachne and Icarus and causes them to experience their lack of humility.
Overall, their pride reveals the ultimate consequence that leads them to becoming an eternal slave of their actions. Mortals that are arrogant inflict destruction on not only themselves but others as well. The myth of Queen Cassiopeia displays the damage that pride exerts on people around her. As a consequence of Queen Cassiopeia’s narcissism, the kingdom of Jobba must sacrifice Princess Andromeda and suffer an economic collapse. When Perseus questions the crowds of people huddling together at the edge of a cliff, King Jobba explains, “My wife, foolish, boastful woman was vain of her beauty and that of our daughter-not without reason, as you see; but she took it into her head to praise herself among the people, saying that she and Andromeda were more beautiful than any Nereid”. Invoked by the jealous demands of his Nereids, Poseidon brings misfortunes into the queen’s life and kingdom. Similar to Queen Cassiopeia's impact on her people, Phaethon tricks Apollo into allowing him to control the sun’s pathway, a serious job that requires an immense amount of discipline.
Provoked by Epaphus’ bragging, Phaethon drives his father’s sun chariot which leads to disaster and his death. While he steers the fire-breathing horses above a series of villages, “Just imagine,” Phaethon thought, “how many people now are looking up at the sky, praising the sun, hoping the weather stays fair. How many people are watching me, me , me…?”...”I won’t stay too long-just dip down toward our own village and circle his roof three times-which is the signal we agreed upon. After he recognizes me, I’ll whip up the horses and resume the path of the day”. Phaethon’s quarrel with Epaphus misplaces pride above all other human qualities. As a result, the crave for recognition ultimately leads to disobedience and recklessness.
Overall, Queen Cassiopeia and Phaethon's arrogance displays the disasters it can have on humanity. The stories and themes shown in Greek mythology depict the arising consequences of prideful mortals. Vanity influences Arachne and Icarus’ actions, eventually leading to their deaths. Then it ruins the lives of other people through Queen Cassiopeia and Phaethon’s narcissism. This overpowering emotion’s effects unveiled in Evslin’s novel is similar to Lance Armstrong’s outcome except that in the novel, the mortals are doomed. In comparison to vanity, hubris is a tragic flaw that inevitably leads to nemesis.

A Personal Reflection about Childhood Trauma
I used to wonder why she called me Danny, she told me it was for short. I used to think to myself 'Danny, well that takes just as long to say as my normal name.' But nothing Laura did made a lot of sense. The little tomboy with tangled blonde hair and hand-me-down clothes from her cousins was different from other girls. All the other girls laughed at me when my bag went missing and I had to take my sister's girlie, pink bag to school. Not Laura she simply smiled and said "Lets swap bags; I hate my ugly brown one anyway."
She was my best friend and I thought that when we were grown-ups we'd get married. We used to put 'play weddings' on behind the swings, under the old gum tree. Laura would wear a white table cloth over her head and proudly hold a sour-sob bouquet. When it finally came time to 'kiss the bride' I always felt so nervous and scared. She used to try reassure me by saying "I'm your best friend; It's just like kissing your sister." The thought of kissing my sister was so gross; it made me even more frightened. I only managed once to kiss Laura on the cheek. While my lips were against the softness of her skin I felt a tingling stir within my chest and stomach. My sister sure never made me feel that way. When I was five my dreams were filled with Laura's tangled blonde hair and hand-me down clothes. Twenty years later I only wish I could sleep without having to see her face.
The day was hot and Laura and I bought ice-creams. I looked at her smiling face, with chocolate syrup dribbling down her chin and thought, 'You're perfect.' And she was. After school Tim met Laura and I by the school crossing. He was my dad's best friend and the only old man I was allowed to trust, according to mummy and daddy. He baby-sat me and my sister when our parents went to dinner and acted romantic. This day he was baby-sitting just Laura and I because my parents were at my sisters boring ballet recital and Laura's mum was working. She doesn't have a dad to look after her when her mum can't. I asked her what happened to her dad one day, she told me with deep breaths and sad looks. At the end of the story she added 'It's a secret Danny, so you're not allowed to tell anybody." | never told a living soul the rest of what she said because "secrets are kept between best friends and best friends only." Laura taught me so well.
Tim drove us back to my house in his fancy new Toyota. He drove really fast around the corners and made it hard for us to keep our balance. Laura and I were both sitting on the back seat and kept falling into each others laps. She laughed all the way home, even when there was nothing to laugh about. Her laughter still echoes in the silence.
"So Daniel, what game do you want to play?" The sun was going down and Tim was running out of ways to entertain us. We had already played all of the board games that we kept in the old, dusty, brown cupboard. "How about I spy?"
"No, eye spy is boring" Laura chanted.
"Yeah it's boring," I added. In actual fact I loved eye spy but if Laura found it boring; then it must be boring"
"I know" Laura jumped up and yelled. "Hide and seek! Me and Danny will hide and you count to ninety.... no one hundred and then come find us. Are you ready Tim? Start counting!"
Laura and I rushed into the kitchen. "I have the best hiding place but you can't tell anyone because it's a secret," She was talking softly so Tim wouldn't overhear. "Do you remember what I told you about secrets?".
"You're my best friend, I would never tell your secret. So where are you hiding?" She leant over and whispered it in my ear. I never gave a second thought about what she had told me.
"Quick, we have to hide!" she shrieked "And don't tell Tim where I'm hiding no matter how long it takes him to find me."
Tim found me about a minute after we started the game. I was hiding under the bed. He asked me where Laura was. I kept her secret. I kept silent - I should have spoken up. He searched through the whole house; inside cupboards, under furniture and behind doors. He didn't find her. He asked me where she was again. I kept her secret. I kept silent - I should have spoken up. Ten, Fifteen minutes went by and Tim stated to panic. He yelled and he screamed in frustration. He grabbed me and shook me back and forth with all his strength "Tell me where she's hiding, boy. I need to know."
What was I thinking? I wasn't thinking! All I thought about was how proud Laura would be of me for keeping her promise for so long, no matter how angry Tim got. I kept her promise. I kept silent - should have spoken up.I don't know how much time had passed when Tim found where she was hiding. I stood by him as he lifted the heavy white door open. He screamed at me to go away but I was paralysed with sickness and fear. I knew what had happened before I got a look. There she was the little tomboy with tangled blonde hair and hand-me-down clothes. She was frozen and blue and she didn't move. She just lay dead in her hiding spot.
I kept her secret. I kept silent - Why didn't I speak up?

The Issue of Stress Management According to Richard Lazarus
According to Richard Lazarus (2002) stress and anxiety mainly occur when we believe we cannot cope with the situation we perceive as stressful.
Stress is unavoidable and it is not possible to eliminate it from our lives entirely. Life is full of challenges, and a life without some turmoil is not only impossible but is also undesirable. The hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and demands of modern life have made stress so commonplace that it has become a way of life for many people.
In small doses, stress can help us perform under pressure and motivate us to do our best. But it is not desirable to constantly be in an emergency mode as the mind and body would have to ultimately pay the price.
Since I have started the University College of the Caribbean initially it was Eustress which is the positive side of stress, excitement, delight, and enthusiasm. I was so elated to finally starting my degree and was reading for the world ahead of me.
After the first week of starting, assignments started flowing in from left and right, I tried to maintain on top of them, got close to persons for information, located the library etc. before I knew it was mid-term and so many areas to cover for exams. Another way I tried to be on target was preparing timetable and sticking to it, I must admit this happens only 5 out of ten times.
These physical changes I must say increased my strength and stamina, speed my reaction time, and enhance my focus, thus preparing me to either fight or flee from the danger at hand. This reaction to a real or imagined danger is called the stress response.
I have however tried a few ways in helping me to deal with the stress I was experiencing. I tried some moderate exercise, running a half mile on the weekends and a little stretching. Change my eating pattern to include more healthy food stress to keep my immune system strong as well as limiting the amount of caffeine that is consumed daily. Caffeine speeds up the heart and metabolic rate which can add stress.
Individuals like myself that are under stress should not turn to harmful stress relievers such as smoking, drinking or unhealthy eating. These unhelpful stress management strategies may seem like they are relieving stress, but instead they are hurting the body, which leads to more stress. Problems with work, relationships, school, and life in general should be dealt with accordingly. By using healthy strategies in moderation or seeking counselling a person can determine what works best for them in dealing with stress. By identifying stress, its causes and side effects managing stress will eventually become easier.

A Research on Stress and Stress Management
You know whats great? When you write a speech about how stressed out society is. It gives you a great excuse as to why you have no clever attention getter. Why should I stress while trying to come up with something funny and unique? That would be hypocritical of me! We all know what its like to be stressed. To feel like there just arent enough hours in the day. There are just too many full days of school this month. What if I dont get into that great college? Why does my computer have to freeze at a time like this? When am I going to write and memorize that informative speech? I dont know about you, but Im a pro at stressing over being stressed. I can spend a good long time sitting on Facebook just to avoid stress. Its not like Im even entertained by reading what my hundreds of friends have on their minds. I just loathe the thought of opening my backpack and attempting to get every assignment finished. Clearly, Americans are pushing their limits with stress. On one hand, stress can be a killer. But, stress can also push people to excel in their performance. Today, I am going to discuss the positive versus negative effects of stress.
In a survey conducted by the National Consumers League, 80 percent of adults said that stress is a problem in their lives. But, stress isnt only affecting adults. More than half the nations 1217 year olds are at a greater risk for substance abuse due to high amounts of stress in their lives. In an article on MSNBC, health editor Jane Weaver compares stress to a roller coaster. She says, A speeding ride on a roller coaster is torture for some, while others race for the next ride. Multi-tasking or living in a hectic urban environment is a thrill for some, a confusing sensory overload for others. For those who often feel overloaded by stress, it can actually cause some serious debilitating diseases, such as hypertension, heart disease, insomnia, alcoholism, and acid peptic disease. Now, in contrast, some people live for the rush of that roller coaster thrill ride.
Have you ever subconsciously hit the snooze button multiple times, until finally you look at the clock and realize you have 4 minutes to get out of the house? That surge of energy flies through your body as you scramble to get ready and get out the door. That is stress pushing us to perform better. And THAT stress is good stress. Dr. Lynne Tan says, Stress is a burst of energy. Its our body telling us what we need to do. Moderate amounts of stress can help people perform tasks more efficiently and can even improve memory. Recent research is predicting that small surges of stress can protect against Alzheimers disease. So, why has our country put such a negative stigma on stress? Because theres a fine line that too many people cross. Its under the circumstances of chronic stress or extreme, severe stress that we suffer the negative effects.
Dr. Maureen Killoran once said, Stress is not what happens to us. Its our response to what happens. And response is something we can choose. So, the solution to this stress epidemic is learning how to respond and cope with stressful events in our lives. If we can learn to enjoy the rollercoaster ride, rather than fight it, or run away in fear from it, our day to day lives will become much more manageable. Some stress reduction techniques include: aerobic exercise, prayer and meditation, yoga, listening to music, taking up hobbies you enjoy, aromatherapy. And most importantly, getting enough sleep and eating healthy. With stress as a prevalent problem in our country, it is no surprise that obesity rates are so high. Stress is known to be directly related to overeating. People use food to cope with their emotions. Rather than feeling disempowered by stress, train yourself to focus that energy on what you need to do. You have the power to make the situation positive. When difficult times arrive, you can either fight, or flee from the problem. Try surrounding yourself with positive people, and manage your time wisely. We all need to stop stressing over stress itself.
In the words of The Beatles, we must learn to, Let it be. There are some things in life we cannot control. But for the things we can control, we can channel our energy positively towards them. So, when its Friday night and you have a big forensics speech to perform the next day, you can relax knowing youre already prepared.

A Look at the General Guidelines in Stress Management
Each of us has our own optimum stress level, which is influenced by heredity and other factors. Some people thrive at stress levels that would quickly lead others to a state of exhaustion. How can we tell if we are stressed beyond our optimum level? Sometimes it is obvious; but, more often we fail to associate the symptoms we experience with their cause. Different people respond to stress differently. For example, one person might gorge himself- or herself with food while another might lose his or her appetite. One person might have trouble falling asleep at night while another person might sleep most of the time.
General Guidelines for Stress Management
Adopt a new way of looking at life. Stress management begins with adopting the philosophy that you, as an individual, are basically responsible for your own emotional and physical well-being. You can no longer allow other people to determine whether or not you are happy. You have little control over the behavior of anyone but yourself. Your goal should be being is too important to trust to anyone but yourself. Your goal should be to develop such positive emotional wellness that nobody can ruin your day.
A positive outlook on life. This is absolutely essential to successful stress management. Your perception of events, not the events themselves, is what causes stress. Almost any life situation can be perceived as either stressful or guarantees a high-stress level. People who habitually view life negatively can recondition themselves to be more positive. One way is by applying a negative, forcing yourself to think about the positive aspects of your situation. Eventually, you will just automatically begin to see life more positively.
A regular exercise program. Exercise is an excellent tension reliever. In addition to the physical benefits, exercise is also good for the mind. Participating in at least three aerobic exercise sessions a week for at least 20 minutes each can greatly reduce stress. Daily stretching exercises provide relaxation and improve flexibility and posture. Participate in leisure activities that keep you physically active.
Be reasonably organized. Disorganization, sloppiness, chaos, and procrastination may seem very relaxed, but they are stressful. Set short-term, intermediate-term, and long-term goals for yourself. Every morning list the things you want and need to accomplish that day.
Learn to say no. Some people accept too many responsibilities. If you spread yourself too thin, not only will you be highly stressed, but important things will be done poorly or not at all. Know your limits and be assertive. If you don't have time to do something or simply don't want to do it, don't. Practice saying no effectively. Try, "I'm flattered that you've asked me, but given my commitments at this time, I won't be able to...
Learn to enjoy the process. Our culture is extremely goal oriented. Many of the things we do are directed toward achieving a goal, with no thought or expectation of enjoying the process. You may go to college for a degree, but you should enjoy the process of obtaining that degree. You may go to work for a paycheck, but you should enjoy your work. Happiness can seldom be achieved when pursued as a goal. It is usually a by-product of other activities. In whatever you do, focus on and enjoy the activity itself, rather than on how well you perform the activity or what the activity will bring you.
Don't be a perfectionist. Perfectionists set impossible goals for themselves because perfection is unattainable. Learn to tolerate and forgive both yourself and others. Intolerance of your own imperfections leads to stress and low self-esteem. Intolerance of others leads to anger, blame, and poor relationships, all of which increase stress.
Look for humor in life. Humor can be an effective part of stress management. Humor results in both psychological and physical changes. Its psychological effects include relief from anxiety and stress, and tension, an escape from reality, and a means of tolerating difficult life situations. Physically, laughter increases muscle activity, breathing rate, heart rate, and release of brain chemicals such as catecholamines and endorphins.
Practice altruism. Altruism is unselfishness, placing the well-being of others ahead of one's own. Altruism is one of the best roads to happiness, emotional health, and stress management. As soon as you start feeling concern for the needs of others, you immediately feel less stressed over the frustration of your own needs. Invariably, the most selfish people are the most highly stressed as they focus their attention on the complete fulfillment of their own needs, which can never happen.
Let go of the past. Everyone can list things in the past that he or she might have done differently. Other than learning through experience and trying not to make the same mistakes again, there is nothing to stressful, and robs the present of its joy and vitality.
Eat a proper diet. How you eat affects your emotions and your ability to cope. When your diet is good you feel better and deal better with difficult situations. Try eating more carefully for two weeks and be gained by worrying about what you did or didn't do in the past. To focus on the past is nonproductive, feel the difference it makes.
There is no unique stress-reduction diet, despite many claims to the contrary. The same diet that helps prevent heart disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes (low in sugar, salt, fat, and total calories; adequate in vitamins, minerals, and protein) will also reduce stress.
Get adequate sleep. Sleep is essential for successfully managing stress and maintaining your health. People have varying sleep requirements, but most people function best with seven to eight hours of sleep per day. Some people simply don't allot enough time to sleep, while others find that stress makes it difficult for them to sleep.
Avoid alcohol and other drugs. The use of alcohol and other drugs in an effort to reduce stress levels actually contributes to stress in several ways. In the first place, it does not reduce the stress from a regularly occurring stressor such as an unpleasant job or relationship problems. Further, as alcohol and other drugs wear off, the rebound effect makes the user feel very uncomfortable and more stressed than before.
Don't overlook the possibility that excess caffeine intake is contributing to your stress. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant that, by itself, produces many of the physiological manifestations of stress. Plus, its effect of increased "nervous" energy contributes to more stressful, rushed behavior patterns. Remember that not only coffee and tea, but chocolate and many soft drinks contain caffeine.

An Overview of Stress Management and the Effects on Wellness
The effects of change reach into every crevice of life putting people more and more under pressure. Human biological evolution is lagging behind developments in technology and lifestyle. Physiological and psychological stress emerges as a result of a growing deficit between daily demands and coping resources. Today it is virtually impossible to avoid stress. Many try but they find that the avoidance strategies frequently generate more stress rather than reducing it.
There are two types of stress that people have to deal with. Eustress, which is positive stress, and distress, which is negative stress. For the purposes of this paper I'm going to neglect eustress and focus on the damaging effects of distress. Negative stress is the stress of losing, failing, overworking, and not coping. Distress affects people in a negative often harmful manner. We all experience distress from time to time. It is a normal, unavoidable part of life.
Stress results from failure to adequately cope with stressors. Stressors could be loud noise, uncomfortable air-conditioning, debts, ringing telephones, broken relationships, unrealistic dead lines, discouragement, fear, pain, an unruly walk jog class, and thousands of other things that we come across in a normal day. It is impossible to avoid stressors. The only totally stress free state is death! Stressors will always be there because we live in an imperfect and unpredictable world.
A hazardous pattern develops when we fail to recognize the signals that the body sends seeking recovery actions. The continuing stress build up eventually leads to stress overload and physical or psychological breakdown results. We need to assist our bodies to cope with stress because our natural biological stress-adjustments are not ideally suited to the demands of modern living. We need to develop special skills to deal with special stressors.
There are several different ways to assist our bodies with dealing with today's stressors. Everyday people use rest flotation, visualization and imagery techniques, yoga, time management strategies, oiging, and several other methods too rid their bodies of stress. I am going to focus on three techniques that are a little more popular then the ones I mentioned above. Massage, meditation, and simply having fun are easy and readily available to everyone. We see people everyday using these methods at home, in the work place, and even in public. They are very effective ways to relax.
Massage affects the body as a whole. It is known to increase the circulation of blood and flow of lymph. The direct mechanical effect of rhythmically applied manual pressure and movement used in massage can dramatically increase the rate of blood flow. Also the stimulation of nerve receptors causes the blood vessels to dilate, which also facilitates blood flow.
Massage has a definite psychological effect. Since massage animates the tactile sense, the body's primary sense, it brings people into the here and away from tension generated by constant preoccupation with problems. Also, loosening of muscle tension or armoring--the physical counterpart of how we defend and protect our selves from psychological pain--can lead to freeing of repressed emotions. "Users of massage therapy as a healing tool quickly realize that they have found a form of drugless therapy. Headaches, insomnia, digestive disorders, arthritis, asthma, minor aches and pains are some of the problems that can respond to massage therapy. It can even have an excellent effect on nervous people who have been dependent on their pharmacy for rest and relaxation".
Most of us have dabbled in meditation by participating in conscious relaxation. Maybe during an exercise class or to manage pain or anxiety. We start by paying attention to our breathing. "The practical effort to focus completely on our breathing takes our minds away from the mind clutter that constantly tries to invade our mind and eliminate feelings that will lead to a time of calm and relaxation". This form of meditation is known as the concentration, or "one pointed', type of meditation.
Another form of meditation is called mindfulness. In this meditation style, you begin by utilizing one-pointed attention to cultivate calmness and stability, but then you move beyond that by introducing a wider scope to the observing, as well as an element of inquiry. "When thoughts or feelings come up in your mind, you don't ignore them or suppress them, nor do you analyze or judge their content. Rather, you simply note any thoughts as they occur as best you can and observe them intentionally but nonjudgmental, moment by moment, as the events in the field of your awareness. This inclusive noting of thoughts that come and go in your mind can lead you to feel less caught up in them and give you a deeper perspective on your reaction to everyday stress and pressure".
The final form of stress management that we are going to look at is the lost art of having fun. As adults, we need this ability to shift our awareness from rational and logical concerns to a level, which is freer and centered on the moment. People who can shift appropriately between the "there and then" to the "here and now" are good at reality testing and adapting to the demands of the world. They can draw on both their thought processes and their ability to take effective actions. We can't really appreciate fun without the counterbalance of work and the responsibilities of living. And we can't truly value our work until we incorporate fun into our lives.
Pleasure guides us to better health.
When experiences are enjoyable, we want more of them. Our bodies tell us that sleep, reproduction, eating, companionship, and exercise -- to name just a few of our more common daily activities -- are enjoyable. We can actually relieve stress and relax just by doing these activities. "Think about what children do when they play. They lose themselves in the pleasure of the moment. We have all observed children at play. They glow with pleasure -- they shout, smile, and run around. They are so involved with what they are doing that they lose focus on everything else around them"(Life Esteem, 1998). You can almost consider it a form of meditation.
While writing on this topic I couldn't help to notice how little I do to relieve stress in my own life. thought about the times I was happy and relaxed, then I thought about times of stress and discomfort. Although stress full periods are unavoidable, I noticed that I was most at ease when I was involved in a form of activity that was totally irrelevant to the stressors that where causing problems. I felt as if I had more energy to continue, and actually ignored any of the negative aspects of the activity. All in all, I felt happy. Not focusing on stress helps people to feel good, raising their self-esteem and ultimately their level of wellness.

A Review on Stress Management and College Guidelines
Are you the household where GMO foods are picked over organic? Well if you are or not, I am a person who lives in a household and will continue to live in my future household of GMO food. Genetically modified food (GMO) are products of specific DNA changes to modified genetic engineering. This allows new crops to grow faster and a cost is cheaper of the produce. GMO have been in our food in for over 20 years. I am only nineteen years old, meaning I been in eating GMO since I was born. There has been no health related problems from eating these food in my household. I will not change me diet when I have my own household because GMO have not effected me now and it will most like not affect me later. For example, all organic food are not organic, companies are allow to put organic on their labs if percentage of organic is high.
Hero/Bravery Article:
The Hero and Bravery article made me see, people in your everyday life are the true hero's because they are not being label as a hero. Someone who is my hero is my sister because she puts everyone before herself. She does not let people down and she knows the importance of value. Ever since we were little my sister always looked out for me and she showed me the right path in life. For example, people in the article take risk by saving others by putting themselves in harm. My sister is the type of person who will get hurt trying to help save you.
First Key to Academic Success Methods:
Researching different methods for organization was a stressful task from the beginning. Learning different methods that can help me become organized was not the easiest task to take on. I picked five different methods to try out and see if I could use these methods in the long run. The five methods are starting your most critical task first, use a calendar, use a organizer, Evernote/ Beep Me, and try to color each notebook to the textbook for the classes. The first couple of days were hard because these methods did not fit in with my life style and organizing problems. For example, Evernote/Beep Me are apps and they would tell me when my assignments were due after I put them into the app. I did not have time to put all my classes and their assignments into the apps; these apps were my first fail in organizing. The fail was not only from the time to put the assignments but how I could turn off the reminder after it goes off. My second try was, doing my most critical task first, wrong idea for me because I became stress before I could start any other work. I found this method to be for people that can held their stress and know coping styles to help them out. The last three methods I found that they were more for me.
For example, getting calendar was the most help I needed. By putting a calendar/syllabus on my wall, I get to see all my assignments due date. Unlike Evernote, Beep Me I can not turn off the reminder because it is always in my face and by adding my syllabus to the wall, all assignments do not need to be put on the calendar
Black History Month Research Paper:
Who are the Lovings and why are they more important to Black History then people may know? Richard and Mildred Loving are a married couple who were force to leave their home in Virginia because they married a different races. Mildred Loving was a African American who fell in love with a white male, named Richard Loving, at a young age. When the couple found out that they were having their first child they decided that should get married. Unfortunately their marriage would not be celebrate the way they thought it would turn out. A few days after returning home from getting married in Washington, the Loving were arrested because they broke the Virginia's Racial Integrity Act of 1924. The Virginia's Racial Integrity Act of 1924 is a law that does not allow mixed married, meaning whites married whites and blacks married blacks. This law also takes the rights away from other classifying themselves as a different race; only giving them two options. At the time of the arrest both Richard and Mildred were unaware of the law and what it meant. Instead of being spent to jail the Loving's pleaded guilty and long with the plea, they ere told to leave Virginia. The couple travel back to Virginia, however they were taking different trips because they were not allowed to be seen together. One day the Loving's decided that they wanted to travel home as a full family and they ended up getting arrested once again. After the arrest the Loving's had enough and they got help to fight their case because they wanted to come back to their home state. The Loving's got help from the America Civil Liberties Union (A.C.L.U) and they went to court. Their case got moved to Supreme Court because the Loving's lawyers showed that the Virginia Racial Integrity Act of 1924 was unconstitutional; during the case Richard simply told the court "I simply love my wife and I can't live in the state of Virginia because I love her". On June 12, 1967 the Loving's won their case and the law was taking out of affect; allowing them to move their family back to their home state. After building their dream home, Richard Loving was killed in a car accident, after being hit by a drunk driver.
"Taming the Stress Monster"
The "Discovering Your Stress" methods could be applied in other areas of your life and behavior. For example you could use the plan on a project and studying. If you take your notes a take the same method, you are relearning things you knew. If you work in a study group, you could have one person create the same layout of "Discovering Your Stress" for your class notes before a test or exam. The techniques can help others if they tend to forget thing that are important or things they think are note that important.
Guidelines for Success in College:
Strategies I am already using is attend classes and realizing your schedule will be drastically different. The new strategies I plan to start using is taking advantage of daytime free time because I do have about 45 minutes on Thursday and Friday between classes. I will also start using find a place to study because I always end up in a loud place where I could not focus. I learned that its always a option to get a study buddy or join a group to study. I always wanted to study on my own. However if you have other people there, they could help you if you do not understand things and get you back on track if you lost your focus.

Traumatic Stress Management: the Importance of Reducing Stress
Some people go through very rough times in their lives. It is difficult to get through these times, but when they do some are left traumatized by what has happened to them. Although it may seem like they may never overcome it they can and will. There are ways to help someone cope with what has happened and help decrease its negative effects. A few ways involve reducing stress, managing pessimistic thoughts, and living a healthy lifestyle.
To deal with traumatic situations one must first reduce their stress. It can be strenuous when trying to reduce stress since most things tend to cause stress. One way to lower stress is to "schedule time for activities that bring you joy" (Smith et al.). When a person is doing an activity, they enjoy it usually takes their mind of what is going wrong in their lives and brings a smile to their once saddened face. One other way is to get plenty of rest. Lack of sleep "makes it more difficult to maintain your emotional balance" (Smith et al.). Stress is difficult no matter what, but with no sleep, it worsens. Reducing stress helps one manage their traumatic stress, but what also comes with negative thoughts.
Negative thoughts can make a individuals trauma worse. These thoughts could bring a person down and make them doubt themselves which will make their trauma worse. To deal with these thoughts one needs to first "recognize thought distortions" (The Seleni Institute). An individuals mind can trick themselves into thinking things that are untrue. When one has these thoughts, one need to "challenge negative thoughts" (The Seleni Institute). Trauma is usually surrounded by negative thoughts because many tend to blame themselves for what happened.
When they finally start to fight these thoughts, they find themselves not being held back and it allows them to move forward with their lives. Once you have focused on the mental part the next step is to focus on the physical part.
Most would not think their lifestyle has nothing to do with their traumatic stress. One way to have a healthy lifestyle is to "eat a healthy diet" (Smith et al.) Some who have gone through these events tend to eat copious amounts of junk food. It is well-known that fast food slows someone down and after they eat it they tend to feel depressed. Another to manage traumatic stress is to get up and exercise. When "exercising can burn off adrenaline and release feel-good endorphins to boost your mood". When these endorphins are released it makes one feel better over time. Exercising can also help you not feel as tired and help to boost your motivation level to do better.
Traumatic events do not rule someone's life unless that person lets it. Some already know how to manage and fight traumatic stress. Many however do not panic and feel helpless. When all they need to do to manage this is reduce their stress, manage negative thoughts, and live a healthy lifestyle.

Stress and Stress Management in the Police Force
Police officers are exposed to a lot of stress in their line of duty which emanates from the systems that the department uses to bring down crimes within the society. These systems are likely to result in bitterness that might affect the department's capability to ensure that safety is uphold within the city or town (Smith 3). Thus, cops feel a lot of stress during their work which is caused by the nature of the duties they are tasked with. For instance, it is reported that the number of police officers at the NYPD are 6,000 less than their number in 2001 (Smith 5).
Despite the decreased number of cops, the intensity of work remains the same and at some instances is increasing which prompt the cops to work overtime thus exposing them to work related stress. Also, shifts and duties are done by the few number of police officers thus officers will be forced to shift from one duty to another such as conducting an investigation at filling papers in the department. This results in a lot of stress due to strain by the officers. Financial constraints experienced by the officers is another cause of stress. Cops work extra harder to earn 37,000 USD annually which does not fully settles their bills since they have families to provide for (Smith 13). This prompts cops at some point to work in multiple jobs to raise enough money for their families.
Therefore, combining this with the stress they fell as a cop worsens their situation. The top-down micromanaging style that is used in fighting against crime is reported to depress the morale of law enforcement officers thus resulting to stress (Smith 5). Another cause of stress on police officers is the issues with numbers where officers are required to file reports regarding the number of criminals or individuals they pursue while on duty. This, instills an intuition that they are expected to report numbers rather than enforcing the law thus employing stop and frisk technique on anyone without solid evidences. This creates enmity against the cops and hostility from the public which makes it harder for the police officers to conduct patrols and fight crime as well as stressing.
For instance, there are a lot of stop and frisk at CompStat where police officers are trying to get to report numbers rather than enforcing the law (Smith 10). The hostility that the cops encounter from the public due to the anti-cop perceptions puts them on a lot of risks for instance cops could be shot or even assaulted. Cameroon who was a devoted police officer was assaulted numerous times by the public and his fellow police officers mistreated him for making average of eight arrests per month due to the fight for numbers. The department did not act to help him in any way which prompted him to reign from the police force because of the stress he felt from the work externally and internally.
Police officers are also accused of collaborating with criminals such as drug dealers and as a result they are investigated which causes a lot of stress on them since they tend to feel doubted and watched. Police officers can register to law enforcement stress programs where they can be counseled and supported to reduce the stress as well as sign up with psychiatrists. They can collaborate to air their grievances as a group since voicing them as an individual will prompt np immediate action nor will it display a matter of seriousness. They should advocate to removal of heads of department who are not willing to help them or even take actions against police assaults.
Stresses related to the number of officers should be addressed by increasing the number of new recruits in academies with an encouragement with a promise of a higher pay. Also, the issues with numbers can be abolished to ensure that police officers are motivated by the interest to serve the public and not to satisfy the expectation of the heads of department.

Reasons Behind Stress and the Benefits of Stress Management
Stress is something we all face in people's lives. Some of us face it more than others, yet it is something that most people have to deal with. Stress affects people's physical, emotional, and mental health. It can be caused by a variety of sources, such as work, school, the foods people eat, and the people they interact with. Stress is a burden that can affect people's productivity, bodies and emotions. It can cause many problems and must be dealt with in an appropriate and fast manner. Stress, when managed effectively, can be reduced to just an annoyance in our lives. It is important to know how to manage stress since practically everyone experiences it. When taken care of, people can lead the productive and happy lives they were meant to lead.
Stress comes from many different places and is caused by many different things. Stress can be caused by the overbearing boss at work, the mean bully at school, the amount of work a person does in a day, or perhaps the high-calorie chips a person eats. Stress comes from many different areas in our lives and this is why stress management can be difficult. It can be difficult in trying to cut out from people's lives the causes of stress since there can be so many. That is why it is important to find ways to manage stress, not eliminate it. Managing stress can be effective in improving job productivity, school productivity, and improving the physical health of a person's body. Emotions are very much linked to stress, and being anxious or nervous for long periods of time can stress people out. It's important to find out where those negative emotions come from and to find appropriate ways to deal with them. In addition, foods that contain high amounts of fats, calories, or artificial additives can cause our bodies to react in an unpredictable and negative way. That is why people's diets are important factors in managing stress. The foods people eat affect their physical, emotional, and mental health, which in turn affects their ability to cope with stress.
One way we can deal with stress is by avoiding people who we know are mean, inconsiderate, our pushy. These kinds of people can trigger high stress levels due to their actions and words and are the reason why many people experience stress. They can be found in anywhere, but in particular workplaces, schools, and homes. Even if it is a family member who is rude, obnoxious, or impolite, it is advisable to avoid them. Avoiding unstable people helps us meet stable people, which in turn can help us deal with stress levels. When we avoid people who are inconsiderate or impolite, we can help our mental well-being by meeting good people who help us maintain stability, composure, peace, and happiness. It is advisable to seek pleasant people so that stress can be limited and managed. The people we meet truly do affect our levels of stress and how well we deal with stress.
Another way to deal with stress is by restricting foods to healthy ones such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats, grains, and rice. These five food groups are beneficial in removing toxic chemicals from people's bodies which can help reduce levels of stress. Stress can be caused by bad foods since they have high fats, calories, and artificial additives, which are detrimental to a person's health. Limiting what a person eats to the five mentioned food groups allows a person to improve their physical health. Improving a person's physical health can lead to many benefits, such as more ability to stay focused, alert, and composed. A person's physical health is important to a person's health overall, and is directly linked to how well they can manage negative emotions such as anxiety, fear, depression, or nervousness. Healthy foods can improve a person's emotional and physical well-being, which can help them lead normal, fruitful lives. The last way that stress can be managed is through time management.
Time management is a skill that can take months or perhaps years to develop, yet when it is matured, the effects can be beneficial beyond any doubt. Time management is knowing what a person's priorities are, and what should be completed first. Time management skills can help in dealing with stress since knowing what to do first and what to do in the first place can help immensely with having an orderly life. Having order in a person's life can help them grow tremendously in their emotional well-being and also in their physical well-being as well. Chaos causes people's minds to spin out of control which can lead to detrimental effects on a person. It is important to know what a person's priorities are and when a person should complete their tasks because it is fundamental to the art of stress relief. Time management is truly a skill that should be fostered and nurtured, so that a person can understand what they need to do first and what they can do later.
In conclusion, stress is a multifaceted problem that needs adequate solutions. It is important that a person learns several different coping skills in stress management since stress can come from several different sources. Stress, however, can be managed effectively when a person knows what they are dealing with, and how to treat it appropriately. Although it is probably impossible to completely eradicate stress from a person's life, it is possible to treat it to a certain extent. When stress is limited in its ability to affect and take control over people's lives, productivity and overall health will go up dramatically. Stress management is a skill that can take years to develop. When developed properly, however, it is unbelievable what can result from it. Anyone can learn the benefits of stress management, and can also learn that stress is not a permanent problem, but rather something that can be limited and controlled.

Stress Management and the Effects of Stress on the Mind and Body
Abstract
Stress is known as one of the most common topics discussed between friends, family and co-workers. Most of us understand that stress can effect our health, but do you really understand the effects stress has, if left unchecked? Did you know stress cause issues with your mind and even your body? When you are finished reading this paper, my goal is for you, the reader, to have a better, more clear understanding of how stress affects the body and mind, and how to manage your stress so your can reduce these effects.
Introduction
You look over at your alarm and you realize you are late for work again, you get up and realize your favorite coffee is all gone, the car will not start, you have a flat tire and the day just gets worse from there. These are just some of the things that can cause stress, if not handled properly through stress management. Stress is defined as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse event or very demanding circumstances. There are several things which can cause stress in your life and the events which cause stress vary from person to person.
It is true, if you manage stress you can avoid the negative effects stress may have on your mind and body. Stress that is left unchecked can contribute to health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes.
Sources of stress
There are many different sources of stress and most of them you experience in your everyday life. For example, being out of your favorite coffee, no more milk, a rough day at the office and more are common example of everyday things which can cause stress. When you're at home, there are multiple things that can cause stress. For instance, you wake up because the lights went out and you go to the basement, all you see is water because your sump pump quit working in the middle of the night. When you start thinking about the cost of repairs, cleaning the mess up and the loss of personal property, this can result in higher than normal stress levels because you start to feel overwhelmed. In your work life, there are many different experiences which may cause a stressful environment in the workplace. Monday morning, you come into work ready to tackle all the projects you have, just to find out your boss needs you to complete a last minute project that another co-worker was required to have the project done last week, but now you need to have it completed today and before you start to complete your normal work. In your mind, you starting thinking about how it isn't fair that you need to complete the work, when someone else was tasked to do it, how all of your other projects are going to suffer, how you never get credit. These thought can be stressful. Even everyday life can start to become stressful if you think about it. Watch the news for a few minutes and there is news of Terrorism, war, lack of clean food, water and global warming, just to name a few and to the right person this can cause a whole world of stress, that is not needed. No matter where you turn there is a situation when thought about or dwelled upon, can cause stress, it all depends on the person and how they handle stress.
Impact of Stress
Did you know Stress can have a great impact on your life? If you become are stressed all the time, also known as chronic stress, you might end up taking the frustrations out on your family, your friends and even your co-workers. This can hurt and even end those important relationships. When you're at work and cannot concentrate, your performance at work will start to suffer. If your boss starts to notices that your work is suffering, then you might end up losing your job. When you lose your job, you will not have the money to pay your bills, buy food, have gas for your car in order to look for a job and all of these issues adds more stress to your life and things just start snow balling from there, getting worse with each issue. The impact that stress has on your life can keep adding up, if you don't have a way to manage it or know how to control it.
Stress on the Mind
While the body can handle stress and sometimes the stress is good for the body, it cannot handle stress when there is not a break and has reached a point of being chronic stress. So the body reacts in ways that are negative to our health. Some of the effects of stress can be self inflected like when a person starts to smoke, drink or taking illegal drugs. But some of the effects to the body, are just the bodies' ways of reacting to chronic stress. Stress can raise your blood pressure, heart problems, skin conditions, overweight, diabetes, and headaches to name a few. Even OSHA has declared stress a hazard of the workplace (“Hospital e Tool: Healthcare Wide Hazards - Stress").
Managing Stress
While the stress in life can overwhelming there is good news, stress can be controlled and managed, if you take the time to learn. If you make changes to your diet, certain foods can raise serotonin levels in the brain, which has a calming effect. There are other foods that can decrease the amount of cortisol and adrenaline, which in certain amounts can be bad for the body. Exercising can be great for the body and stress levels because it makes you feel good and in turn reduces your blood pressure and furthermore, exercise will increase the level of endorphins, which is known as a natural painkiller. There are also readily available classes in which you can take to learn how you manage stress. These classes can be in groups or you can even see a specialist that will work with you, one on one, to manage how you handle stress. Finding a person to talk to is a great way to let some of the stress go, whether they are a professional or not.. You never want to hold it in as this can make the effects of stress worse.
All things considered, while there is a lot of stress in the world, there are ways to manage it. You will need to manage it, in order to prevent the negative affects stress may have on your mind and body. Stress that is left unchecked can contribute to health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.

A Study on College Stress Management
These days, a great many people encounter stress worldwide and they are building up a noteworthy life trouble and experiencing mental and physical medical issues due to the most difficult way possible to express their needs. Stress could be characterized as in a pharmaceutic or average setting weight is an ecological, mental, or enthusiastic factor that produces genuine or mental strain. Stresses are basically external like from social communications or something like that or inside, for example, sustain routes, or from a restorative approach. Stress can begin off the "fight or flight" backfire, a showed reaction of mental structure. Talking about the source of stress, this expression was acknowledged from the scope of physics by a specific father of stress explorer known as Hans Selye. In physics, stress portrays a power that is creating a strain on the physical body or at the end of the day, winding a touch of combination until the point when the moment that it breaks all of a sudden happens because of the quality, or stress, upheld on it (Copper, 2017). In the beginning of the year 2018, many people saw high stress rate as they did not anticipate this expansion. This sensational increment of individuals experiencing stress was because of a reason known as significant life changing. The solution is to not enabling everything to get you candidly or feeling frustrated. Be that as it may, stress is not a positive thing for people to confront, in any case, there is dependably an answer for stress which is for people to change their state of mind and expressing their needs.
Life Changes are huge occasions which require a considerable measure of alteration too somebody's life. These occasions cause stress. Cases of these future Marriage, Childbirth or a difference in work. According to Mathew, he quoted the following 'It is a complete and utterly uncomfortable sensation to experience” (Mathew, 2013). Therefore, such stressors are reasons of numerous individuals confronting stress. Right off the bat, weight of work is one of the main causes of stress, as indicated by studies. An individual could be stressed for some situation since he or she could have worked for a drawn out stretch of time with high work weight or stall out at work or illuminate a ton of work. In addition, a person's sadness depends on his/her activity as it could be dull and tiring Moreover, life stresses can likewise have a major effect, particularly weight from the family is additionally a typical reason for stress. What's more, in some cases the stress originates from inside, as opposed to outside.
One can simply stress him/herself out just by agonizing over things, for example, stress, fear, change, negative and tired. Supporting the previous statement, Taylor mentioned that it is an uncomfortable and irritability feeling an individual could experience while dealing with stress (Taylor, 2012). These above reasons can prompt stress. On the other hand, to seize stress from society, individuals must seek professional help or the advice of loved ones. In order to be able to deal with stress, an individual could talk to his/her loved one about issues that lead to being stress regarding their workplace or specific people a certain person faces daily causing high level of stress. Discussing such problems with a trustworthy person would help build a plan to try and eliminate stress once and for all. Therefore, it will allow the stressed person be able to know exactly certain elements he/she stresses him/her the most or it is also known as stressors and deal with them on the long run and a detailed plan on how to deal with it. According to Williams, he quoted the following "Try to defeat this disease with natural resources and only the human brain." (Williams, 2011). As Williams stated, he means without taking any medication, stress could be solved by applying a great routine and this supports the solution mentioned earlier. Not to mention the fact that after identification of the stressors, a stressed individual must follow up and track each stressor step by step with the intention to see whether or not there has been progress on eliminating such awful stressors that makes a person miserable. To be able to seek for better solutions, many people must be able to research more about stress regarding solutions.
The reduction of stress helps many individuals live their lives freely without boundaries or not worrying about anything to ruin their day. Moreover, allowing the individual to reach a state of mind where he or she can reach the ability of not allowing the stress to overtake their mind or make them feel overwhelmed. If such thing occurs, it will lead to individuals to become happier, as well as be more effective in terms of work for instance. Speaking of happiness, many people tend to forget such thing as stress robs a lot from a person and what it steals is happiness first. Due to stress, they forget how exciting it was to watch movies, or enjoying a fancy meal in a luxurious restaurant. With the lack of stress, it will help us as human beings to get the feeling of how good "good" feels and it is what keeps many people motivated to go on with their day (Perry, 2012). In terms of change, if an individual is willing to invest new traits in themselves, such as optimism, will affect their health and well-being in a great way. As being optimistic allows a person to think positive and help them strive to what he/she desires instead of thinking negatively, thus, an effective way to relieve stress and focus on accomplishing daily tasks (Perry, 2012).
Even though with all the solutions, given a crack could appear because of changes due to time and the way the world changes. Reducing stress is very important, nevertheless, if it completely removed it will remove a good memory booster and a motivational form of the brain. According to Charleston, he stated a point concerning motivation that it allows people to stop being motivated as stress allows an individual to improve him/herself. Moreover, he also stated if a person loses a crucial part of a part does not help many people in tough conditions such as dodging a moving car on a highway (Charleston, 2006).
From examining various points of view, the sensation of people feeling experiencing stress is due to significant life changing, Be that as it may, to solve such a crucial element is changing their state of mind and expressing their needs to trustworthy people with the intention to come up with an effective plan to deal with stressors. Going to college for the first time is an exciting experience for most. College students have opportunities that weren't so easily accessible before going to campus, and they have the freedom to find themselves. While mom and dad aren't there to hold their child's hand anymore, the student is more likely to face new challenges or similar challenges to those faced before. According to the 2015 National College Health Assessment, 30% of students reported that stress had had a negative impact on their academic performance. College stress can be caused by poor time management skills, pressure to excel, and a lack of creating new relationships with peers.
According to Coccia and Darling, common stress inducers could be caused simply by personal characteristics, social interactions and personal behaviors. Personal characteristics such as gender and age have proven to be predictors of stress. For example, females tend to have higher stress levels than males. Females have been reported to have greater concern with social and romantic relationships and have greater rates of social anxiety and depression than men of the same age (Catherine Coccia & Carol A. Darling, 2014). In college, one of the first problems a student will typically face is learning how to manage their time in the most efficient way possible. Different class schedules and deciding the best way to spend their time outside of class is a very difficult tasks. Due to living by a set schedule for most of one's life, the ability to have control over their schedule is a new experience for a student.
Dr. Gregory Jantz, psychologist and author of "How to De-Stress Your Life", says, "We actually create more stress from not being good time stewards." Time management has proven to be a cause of severe stress in college students due to the inability to accurately factor in all aspects of the student's schedule such as classes, breaks between classes, study and homework time, and even the time the student should plan to eat meals throughout the day. While at college, students feel a higher pressure to excel in all aspects of their lives, especially academically. This pressure can be put on the student by his or her parents or another close family constantly telling the student that they need to keep their grades up, go to every class, or hover. The student may also feel pressured to excel because they may be a first-generation college student and feel they must prove they deserve the ability to go to college and make their family proud. While the signs of this excess pressure to succeed can be beneficial to the student, it may also overstress the student.
Dr. Turner from The Mayo Clinic suggests reaching out to others such as friends or family for help. Stress can lead to severe depression and if not treated properly, the symptoms may get too far out of control for the student to be able to handle the depression on their own. Symptoms of depression include appetite changes, defensive and quick mood changes, irritability, and altered sleep patterns. appetite changes, defensive and quick mood changes, irritability, and altered sleep patterns.
Depression can be caused by stress and is a serious mental illness that can be avoided and helped if done properly. Dr. Turner recommends seeking help from a psychiatrist if the situation becomes too difficult to handle. This disease can become detrimental to one's health if help is not sought out and the situation is not handled properly. As each person has his or her own way of taking care of depression, if the cause is not identified to its full extent, the illness may worsen.
Relationships in college are a vital part of each student's experience. As a student, one may feel detached and soon become depressed if social interaction is not a key part of his or her daily routine. "Something I hear repeatedly is students are impatient in college to form the friend network that they had at home in their communities," says Dr. Nancy Stockton, director of Counseling and Psychological Services at Indiana University. The distance from peers may cause students to feel as though they are not worthy of friendship or romantic relationships, making them either shut themselves off from other students more or making them feel the need to reach out to their peers for help and acceptance. Elizabeth Scott from stress. Sandra starts by discussing that many factors are present in the cause of stress and the way each student copes. With many other studies feeding the research that Sandra takes on, she was able to put together a well-rounded study.
One of the first coping styles that Lenz speaks about is task-oriented coping. She refers to homework being a probable cause of stress in college students. The task-oriented coping means that a student is more likely to get the homework done before he or she takes a moment to consider how the stress is affecting them. The student will directly confront the source of his or her stress without beating around the bush. The second form of coping that Lenz described is called emotion-oriented coping, meaning there is a specific cause of the stress the student is facing. Instead of focusing his or her energy on completing the task, say it is back to the homework analogy, the student will focus harder on understanding and controlling their emotional state towards the situation and completely forget about completing the homework. Lenz says that the third and final form of coping is avoidance coping.
Avoidance coping is when the student has decided to avoid the cause of the stress they are a student will avoid the homework completely and this is how the student will handle their stress. Lenz's study shows that while emotion-oriented coping is the most used tactic for dealing with stress in college, the other two forms she wrote about are not unused, just not as regularly used by the students as emotion-oriented. The results of the study that Lenz conducted show that students have different needs and how each student deals with his or her stress varies immensely. There are many causes of stress and college students have a higher rate of stress than middle-aged workers. Learning to handle stress on one's own time is a challenge, but there are endless ways to learn to help oneself. Exercise, yoga, taking time to pamper yourself, and deciding in one's mind how to handle stress are only a few of the options available for coping with this burden, but there are many more tactics to be considered.
