Ego and Superego in Sigmund Freud’s Theory of Personality Development

Since the publication of The Lord of the Flies, there have been many speculations as to what the allegorical connection was, but one of the most supported is that of Dr. Sigmund Freud. An analysis of William Golding’s, The Lord of the Flies, reveals the main characters identification with id, ego, and superego from Freud’s theory of personality development.

Jack’s pursuit of personal satisfaction blinds him from seeing the groups need and the ultimate goal of getting off the island which best identifies him as an id. Since early on, Jack had an obsession with the pigs and this obsession hindered his ability to see the needs of the group. Jack can be seen as an id because of his impulse to hunt for blood and his own pleasure rather than to provide the group with meat. Freud describes the id as part of the unconscious mind. He states that it always works to provide pleasure no matter what the cost. (Psychoanalysis) This can be easily connected to Golding’s portrayal of Jack’s hunt for the sow. Golding describes the hunters as, “Excited by the long chase and the dropped blood” (Golding 135) to show the pleasure that the boys feel. He then depicts the gruesome image of the dead sow by saying, “The spear moved forward inch by inch and the terrified squealing became a high pitched scream. Then Jack found the throat and the hot blood spouted over his hands” (Golding 135) in order to convey to the reader that Jack is so caught up in his own pleasure that he loses sight of reality and his descend into savagery. No longer does Jack hunt for meat, but instead for his pleasure which blinds him from seeing the goal of getting off the island and this is why he is best described as an id.

Piggy’s desire to always adhere to the rules and do what is right best relates him to a superego. When Ralph and Piggy first arrive at the beach, they find a conch and decide to use it as a symbol to show who is speaking in the group. In his theory, Freud claims that the superego is the conscious part of the mind that tries to control the impulsive behavior of the id and seeks to do the right thing no matter what and if it is not able to, may feel shame or guilt. (Funk and Wagnalls, Psychoanalysis) Throughout the multiple gatherings, everyone, especially Jack, dismisses Piggy causing him to shout, “I got the conch. I got a right to speak.” (Golding 45) This shows how Piggy tries to follow the rules that they have set and also to control Jack’s tendency of saying whatever he wants to his heart’s content without having the conch. After the murder of Simon, Ralph starts to realize what has happened. He says to Piggy, “Don’t you understand, Piggy? The things we did-” and Piggy replies, “He may still be-.” (Golding 157) As Ralph begins to take in everything that has happened, Piggy starts feeling shameful and guilty because he was not able to stop Jack and the others. This shame causes Piggy to deny and give excuses as Ralph mentions the tragedy. Piggy’s determination to stick with the rules and self shame from not being able to control Jack’s id are prime examples as to how Piggy identifies with superego.

Although Ralph prioritizes the signal fire, he must constantly mediate between Jack’s thirst for pleasure and Piggy’s desire to adhere to the rules, which is why he is best suited as an ego. In the beginning of The Lord of the Flies, one of the first things Ralph does as chief is getting a signal fire ready. While the others are enjoying fruit or hunting pigs, Ralph is thinking about what needs to be done in order to get off the island. Freud claims that the ego is the conscious part of the mind that mediates the id’s want for pleasure and the social pressures brought to bear by the superego. (Diane Andrews Henningfeld, An overview of Lord of the Flies) Golding gives us a prime example of Ralph trying to control Jack’s id. Ralph says, “I was talking about the smoke! Don’t you want to be rescued? All you can talk about is pig, pig, pig!” (Golding 57) This conveys how Ralph is trying to make Jack see what is actually needed the most. Later on, when Jack steals Piggy’s specs, Ralph says to Jack, “You pinched Piggy’s specs, you’ve got to give them back.” (Golding 204) This represents the ego’s role of mediating between the id and the superego. Ralph tries to get the specs back from Jack in order to give it back to Piggy. The postponement of the hunt in order to build a signal fire and the mediation between Jack and Piggy best matches Ralph to the role of ego.

Although one might think that WWII would be the obvious allegorical connection, through careful research, one is able to find other connections. Indeed, there are many allegorical connections in William Golding’s work of art, but through the analysis of Freud’s theory and Golding’s characters, one can clearly see the connections to Id, Ego and Superego.

The Influence of Sigmund Freud on the Development of the Main Areas of Psychology

In my very own words, brain science implies picking up information of the psyche. Wilhelm Wundt, a German clinician, is known as the 'Father of Psychology.' He built up the world's first exploratory brain science lab in Leipzig, Germany in 1879. The lab contained scientistic strategies to consider the human personality and conduct. (Cherry, 2018) He was simply the absolute first to call an analyst. Wundt likewise created reflection which enabled spectators to study and report the substance of their considerations. Wundt likewise created reflection which enabled spectators to study and report the substance of their musings. It was said to be three dimensions of mindfulness in the brain: cognizant, oblivious, and preconscious. What you are thinking about right now is the cognizant dimension. Preconscious is thought of as a memory. It's simply beneath the mindfulness surface. Last, yet not least, the oblivious dimension contains our profound, covered considerations and recollections. In my subjective treatment sessions, the therapist alluded to the oblivious dimension as the 'Root.' In brain science, there are five noteworthy school of contemplations. They are structuralism, behaviorism, functionalism, cognitivism, and humanism. The ideas of these schools of considerations are what is utilized to help reconstruct the mind while recouping from a traumatic experience.

Five Major Schools of Psychology

Structuralism

The first school of thought known as structuralism was established by Edward B. Titchener, an understudy of Wilhelm Wundt. Structuralism is the hypothesis of cognizantadvancement. It endeavors to look at the grown-up intellect. Titchner alluded to the intellect as the amassed involvement of a lifetime.

Behaviorism

Behaviorism is another dimension of the school of considerations. It was built up by an American clinician named John Broadus Watson. Watson said behaviorism was the art of perception conduct. He accepted just conduct that could be watched, recorded, and estimated was the investigation of people or creatures. Watson distributed his perspectives on behaviorism brain science in 1913 out of an article. He named that article 'Psychology as the Behaviorist Views It.' (Oelze, 2018). Psychoanalysis falls underneath behaviorism. It was inspected by Sigmund Freud who concentrated on the oblivious dimension in the brain. He accepted that numerous of the components that impact our considerations and activities lie exterior of cognizant mindfulness and work completely in our oblivious. Freud believed that when the id, ego, and the superego conflict, it negatively affects behavior. The id is the only component of personality that is present from birth. The ego is the component of personality that is responsible for dealing with reality. The superego is the aspect of personality that holds all of our internalized moral standards and ideals that we acquire from both parents and society—our sense of just and unjust.

Functionalism

The school of thought that contributed enormously to the advancement of brain science is functionalism. It centers around how the mind capacities. The American researcher, William James, trusted that the brain is liquid and it's not steady. He likewise trusted that cognizant is a progressing thing.

Cognitivism

Cognitive brain research, established by Ulric Neisser, is the school of psychology that thinks about mental forms. It focuses on how individuals think, see, retain information, and learn. Cognitive brain research started to develop amid the 1950s. This period is some of the time alluded to as the 'cognitive revolution.' Cognitivism fixates on the interior mental activities. Mental forms such as considering, memory, knowing, and problem-solving have to be be investigated.

The Critical Essay on the Economic Problem of Masochism by Sigmund Freud

The critical essay on The Economic Problem of Masochism by Sigmund Freud is very informative. The essay has to be read carefully to grasp the important information and also to develop a point on view. From a personal perspective, the understanding from Freud’s finding about Masochism is purely a feminine trait. It is classified as a habit a person develops to find pleasure whether sexual or non-sexual, from past experiences, whether positive or negative. Usually it is the negative experiences that cause masochism. In addition, it can also be said that satisfaction derived from pain or trauma can cause masochism.

In some components of Freud’s essay, I disagree; especially the findings about the Oedipus complex. Freud’s stated that boys feared that they will be castrated as a form of punishment by their fathers for desiring their mothers. This essay was published in the 1920’s and to compare life from then till now is difficult. Education is more advanced now and what I mean by that is men back in the 1920’s would’ve been more empathetic and compassionate with their son. It could’ve been said that boys were actually paranoid at that time due to how they were treated by their fathers.

I believe if back in the days when this study was conducted, if people were educated the finding would’ve been different. Freud concluded that girls experienced penis envy and perceived their vaginas as wounds that result from their castration. Would this finding be relevant in today’s world? I highly doubt it. In this component of Freud’s research, I disagree with his findings. They seemed to be relevant back in those days except now they might now.

“Suffering in some way satisfies something or someone,” this was noted by Freud in Economic Problem of Masochism. “The suffering itself is what matters,” Freud added. I agree with this idea based on a personal experience. I’ve witnessed my neighbor’s boyfriend physically abuse her multiple times. Most times she would play the victim just to get some action and after every fight they would make love so loud that it could be heard from my first floor of my house.

Also according to Freud, “The true masochist always turns his cheek whenever he has a chance of receiving a blow.” The collaboration of these findings is to support my agreement with the above statement. I have observed my neighbor’s behavior whenever she thinks she had done or said something wrong. It is as if she prepares for a smack or punch without her boyfriend showing any signs of anger. Her paranoia was obvious even though at times she would purposefully try to be the victim.

There are films in that I’ve encountered that contributes to my understanding and assent of these findings. For example, the film Belle De Jour showed multiple examples of how suffering can actually satisfies someone. The protagonist, Belle de Jour suffered psychologically with this bizarre sexual fantasy of being controlled and dominated by men. This character ‘Belle De Jour’ which is her prostitute name, is married to a successful man ‘Pierre’ who loves dearly and provides the best of things for her. Her fantasy is obtained by working as a prostitute. She’s struggles to escape this fantasy as it haunts her.

Her sexual desire usually seems to bother her before and after her sexual encounters. These sexual encounters are not for monetary gain either, but for merely sexual satisfaction. Freud stated that women are innately passive, masochistic people. Belle De Jour is a prime example of Freud’s finding. She was not attracted to her husband sexually mainly because he loved her exactly how a man should love his wife. That is to ensure that he was romantic and careful. Pierre also took her out on vacations; instead Belle De Jour yearned for the opposite.

At the beginning of the film showed a scene from Belle De Jour’s imagination. Pierre took her for a stroll through an abandon park on a horse and carriage. They were having a conversation in which Pierre seemed to be begging for her to love him. Belle De Jour was neglectful of his effort. Pierre then commanded his riders to forcefully take Belle De Jour out of his horse and carriage and tie her up. He whipped her and left her for one of the riders to rape her. I noticed her face was calm, anticipating the rider to undress her and rape her. This is exactly relatable to my personal experience with my neighbor. At times she would verbally abuse her boyfriend in order for him to retaliate and physical abuse her. This example proves my reason for agreeing with this component of Freud’s findings on Masochism.

Another scene shows exactly the type of guy she was attracted to. The character Marcel who is a criminal visited the sweat shop, upon meeting the three prostitutes, he only wanted Belle De Jour. After their sexual encounter, they both fell in love with each other. Pierre noticed a strange behavior in Belle De Jour so he took her out of the city for vacation. Even that failed Pierre. Belle De Jour’s wished is to be back with Marcel until 5pm fulfill her sexual fantasy. She is confused as to why she is attracted to such an erotic lifestyle. She showed less of a sense of hopelessness but it can be seen that she’s trapped in her mind. Her thoughts are what influences her actions and therefore she cannot escape her fantasy world.

Belle De Jour’s imagination sets the tone of the entire film. Every desire that was shown is played at some point in the film. Her imagination shows what is it that she wants to be dominated and punished, not loved and cared for. In total, these ideas are included to validate my understanding to Freud’s finding that, the true masochist always turns his cheek whenever he has a chance of receiving a blow and also how suffering in some way satisfies someone.

The Role of Sigmund Freud’s Psychodynamic Approach in Science

Over the ages, as the world expands and develops new challenges present themselves and pose questions that need to be answered. Most of these questions are not direct and cannot be a hundred percent proven and because of this we develop theories. As new circumstances arise, they can provide a means for theories to develop and grow to further explain the question being asked. The authors of our textbook most likely included. So many theories because it is important to know what the reasoning was in the past. What was the current reasoning, and what is going to be the reasoning in the future as to how humans developed. Like most subfields, Human Development does not have one overall theory, instead, it has five principles that help steer today’s research. These five perspectives are psychodynamic theories, learning theories, cognitive theories, ecological and systems theory, and theories involving the life-course perspective, selective optimization/ compensation theory, and life-span theory.

With its roots tracing back to Sigmund Freud “The psychodynamic approach includes all the theories in psychology that see human functioning based upon the interaction of drives and forces within the person, particularly unconscious, and between the different structures of the personality [Mcleod].” Although most of Freud beliefs are no longer recognized one of his followers, Erik Erikson, founded the psychosocial theory which is still widely recognized today. The psychosocial theory described the eight stages of life that everyone goes through. Beginning with basic trust vs. mistrust and ending with integrity vs. despair. Each stage is important. And must be completed first before the individual can move on to the next stage this is commonly referred to as epigenetic principle. This is important to the study of human development because it provides insight into an individual’s strengths and weaknesses when it comes to overcoming barriers.

Unlike psychodynamic theory. Learning theories are focused on an individual’s acquired. Behavior throughout life and contributes it to the environment rather than an individual psyche. There are two major learning theory principles. They are behaviorism and social learning theory. “Behaviorism is the belief that instruction is achieved by observable. Measurable, and controllable objectives ser by the instructor. And met by the learners who elicit a specific set of responses based upon a controlled set of stimuli. [Leonard, 16]” Whereas Social learning theory is the belief that people don’t learn by a system of punishment and rewards but instead by observing other people’s behaviors. For example, when a child grows up around a parent who uses profanity, that child is more likely to imitate that parent when they grow older and use profanity themselves. This is all very valuable to the study of human development because it demonstrates that people learn and grow based upon their knowledge and personal experiences.

Advantages when Choosing a Career as a Veterinarian

When thinking about the future, there are many career paths one can take. A career path such as a veterinarian, involves many challenges along the journey. Starting the journey involves researching and volunteering time towards the field of veterinary medicine. Before one should commit to this path, one needs to be certain that they want to put time and effort into a field that is demanding. There are many different types of veterinarians. Such as small animal veterinarians, exotic veterinarians, specialized veterinarians, and more. To become a veterinarian and prosper in the field. One needs to have dedication, passion for animals, and thorough knowledge. Although those qualities are important. They are not enough. Individuals wanting to pursue this career need to complete a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. And a state license to practice. The research of this paper is to provide its readers. With an accurate path to becoming a veterinarian and properly guide one through. The requirements and challenges of this profession.

Before deciding to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, one must be aware of the requirements. In order to become a veterinarian. One is required to attend an additional four years of school after completing an undergraduate degree. The majority of students major in biology for their undergraduate degree. But there are many majors people can choose from and still be on the path to veterinary school (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2018). At East Carolina University. Intended biology majors have three concentrations to choose from including. General biology, ecology evolution, and molecular cell biology (East Carolina University, 2018). The general biology degree requires an average of 2.0 GPA overall. Minimum of 120 credit hours, and complete 40 credit hours of general education courses (East Carolina University, 2019). There are many requirements for veterinary school. That need to be completed while getting an undergraduate degree. A course in animal nutrition is a prerequisite for veterinary school. East Carolina University does not have this course. There are many schools that offer this course including: North Carolina State University, Purdue University, Iowa State University, and more (North Carolina University, 2019). According to the Journal of Animal Science, “To help students define where their passion may lie, steps have been implemented in the Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University to inform incoming and freshman students about the diversity of careers in animal science.” (Sterle, Tyler, & Daniel, 2016). Iowa State sets up their students with many opportunities to gain experience in the field of veterinary medicine. Dr. Mercer argues that exploring the field before committing to veterinary medicine is important in order to get an idea of what is to come in the life of a veterinarian. East Carolina University supplies students with a list of requirements to complete for veterinary school. The list includes: a minimum of 400 hours shadowing veterinarians. At least 100 hours of animal experience, three recommendations, education experience, community activities, grades, and complete the GRE (East Carolina University, 2019). Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Science. The student must be prepared to apply to veterinary school.

The DVM program at North Carolina University Veterinary Medicine is competitive when considering who gets accepted. Students who are interested in applying to veterinary school must have completed prerequisite courses including: animal nutrition, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, composition and writing, genetics, microbiology, physics, humanities and social sciences, and statistics (North Carolina University, 2019). Students that meet these requirements then can begin the application process to North Carolina University School of Veterinary Medicine. Another requirement for veterinary school is taking the Graduate Record Exam to be able to apply to school (North Carolina University, 2019). Veterinary schools want students to be well rounded with veterinary experience, animal experience, education experience, and community involvement (North Carolina University, 2019). When students are involved in the community, one must acquire three recommendations from veterinarians or PhD scientists they have worked with in a veterinary or research setting (North Carolina University, 2019). Obtaining experience with veterinarians is a wise strategy to determine the types of animals students want to work with in the future or if one wants to specialize on a certain animal. If the student is accepted into the DVM program at North Carolina State University, they will begin classes the following semester. Dr. Mercer strongly advices that if one does not get in veterinary school on the first try, then try again and do not give up.

As a student goes through the DVM professional program, they will go through two different stages of education. The two stages include: a pre-clinical three-year stage. Which will be followed by a clinical period in the fourth year of training (North Carolina University, 2019). The first through the third year of the professional program are concentrated. With a continuous progression from a basic science presentation to a more clinical application of veterinary science (North Carolina University, 2019). In the first year, a DVM student will be able to describe the evolution, development, function and identification of normal microscopic and gross anatomy (North Carolina University, 2019). Students will be able to explain the physiological and biochemical basis for common tests used in the diagnostic process of veterinary medicine (North Carolina University, 2019). Students will also learn how to effectively communicate in small groups in a professional veterinary context (North Carolina University, 2019). By the fourth-year students must complete 43 credits in the senior year: 40 credits of clinical rotations and three credits in Clinical Conference (North Carolina University, 2019). The clinic year consists a total of 168 credit hours are required for graduation (North Carolina University, 2019). There are Clinical Conference presentations required of each senior to graduate (North Carolina University, 2019). All of this strenuous work is to prepare future veterinarians. With the most experience and training to do their job with an educated mind on the matter.

While finishing veterinary school. Most students will find work through their clinical portion of their studies. There are many types of work environments which include: private clinics, hospitals, laboratories, farms, classrooms, or work for the government (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2018). Most veterinarians work in private clinics or hospitals, which includes certain duties and tasks. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, veterinarians diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2018). According to Veterinary Medicine, “The focal point of any investigation of animal disease is the making of a diagnosis, and the critical part in making that decision is the clinical examination…” (Constable et al, 2017). Some duties veterinarians are responsible for include. Treat and dress wounds, perform surgery on animals. Examine animals to diagnose their health problems. Test for and vaccinate against diseases, operate medical equipment such as x-ray machines. Prescribe medication, and more (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2018). “From the first moment we see a patient, we intuitively start making diagnoses in the sense of differentiating whether the animal presents signs that are consistent with a healthy status or not.” claims Dr. Villarroel. Veterinarians look for signs of unhealthy behaviors that animals could portray that would identify what is wrong. The most interesting aspect of being a veterinarian would be the experience alone, the ability to watch animals grow and help them stay healthy along the way. Occupations like veterinarians continuously rewards an individual due to the impact they have on others lives.

Upon graduating with a DVM most people already have a job in the field or seek further schooling to specialize. Employment for veterinarians in all practices is increasing each year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics is projecting that employment rate will grow to 19% from 2016 to 2026, which is much faster than the average for all occupations (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2018). In addition to projected employment growth, more job opportunities will become available as veterinarians retire and positions open for new veterinarians (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2018). The main reasons veterinarians are needed more in today’s society is due to the advancements in veterinary medicine. Veterinary medicine allows veterinarians to offer more services that are comparable to healthcare for humans, including more complicated procedures such as cancer treatments (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2018). In the words of Ridgeway, “Treatment of animal injuries and diseases is as old as medicine itself.” (Ridgeway, 2008). Medicine and treatment go hand-in-hand when advancements are made, which is how animals recover from diseases. Veterinarians make an average salary of $90,420 per year due to their extensive education and continuously growing knowledge (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2018). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most veterinarians work nights or weekends, and may have to respond to emergencies outside of scheduled work hours (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2018). Veterinarians are continuously learning new information about veterinary medicine, which makes the job very demanding.

A veterinarian can be faced with different challenges throughout their career. Working in this type of field can test your ethical, personal, and professional points of view when working with animals. When veterinarians are surrounded by emotional owners due to their animal being hurt or ill, it can influence the veterinarian’s ethical views on deciding which treatment to give the animal. This is a challenge that can influence a veterinarian’s personal emotions and effect the way one would do their job. When addressing this challenge, the AVMA reminds veterinarians of their responsibility to the animal, veterinarians need to be an advocate when advising the owner on the best care for its health and welfare (American Veterinary Medical Association, 2019). In the words of researchers Nielsen and Eyre, “Perhaps the most important challenge facing veterinary medicine today is deciding on and implementing actions that will exploit the promises of one health to enhance the profession’s service to society.” (Nielsen & Eyre, 2017). Veterinarians have to continuously be educated in order to stay up to date with ways to treat certain injuries in the most effective way possible. This can be a challenge because it takes a lot of active learning while working full time. Dr. LaFoon argues, “In order to become a good veterinarian, one needs to be a forever student and always willing to continue learning something new.” Veterinarians should be up to date on innovations so they can properly treat animals to the best of their ability. Other possible challenges in a veterinarian’s career can include the stress of being responsible for someone’s animal and making sure to do everything possible to give the best care. Depending on the injury or illness veterinarians can only do so much to help an animal in need. In some cases, it is better to release the animal from its pain, but that is ultimately up to the owners and would be a challenging solution to recommend to the family. When a veterinarian has to inform a family of their animals need to be euthanized or a complication during surgery resulting in the animal’s death, the veterinarian care team has the responsibility to aid the owners through the grieving process by supporting them. In any field there will be multiple challenges, the main thing that matters is how one handles them.

In the field of veterinary medicine there are many innovations that are being discovered to help aid the practice of veterinary medicine. According to Dr. Powell, there are many new innovations including: microchips, pet insurance, digital x-rays/dental x-rays, cloud-based software, and more (New Innovations in Veterinary Medicine, 2018). As Dr. Powell has noted, “The newer lines of microchips are made of acrylic, not glass. This allows the chips to be 30% thinner than older chips.” he also goes to explain how the chips are indestructible (New Innovations in Veterinary Medicine, 2018). Microchips are used to track animals if they have run away, been taken by someone, or been lost. Dr. Powell believes that the microchip technology will be enhanced to have active GPS location in them to allow a device to track where the chip is in any given time (New Innovations in Veterinary Medicine, 2018). This device would come in handy for many occasions including: natural disasters, animals being taken, and run-away animals. With the most recent natural disaster a lot of animals were left in terrible conditions and lost in the destruction from hurricane Florence. Microchips would help track down animals during this devastation. Another innovation that has increased the practice of veterinary medicine would be pet insurance. With this new method, Dr. Powell argues, “I really like pet insurance, for several reasons […] It allows us to practice better medicine and provides less stress to owners (and us) about the cost of larger procedures or preventing the use of better but more expensive medications” (New Innovations in Veterinary Medicine, 2018). The new innovations help veterinarians focus on the health of the animal with less stress on the cost of procedures.

Taking the veterinarian path as a career has both advantages. And disadvantages related to the field of veterinary medicine. Since veterinarians go through extensive and competitive schooling, it can create a stressful environment for veterinarians. They have to make quick decisions that will impact the health of animals being treated. In dealing with this, Dr. LaFoon suggests that one be willing. To continuously learn new information and be familiar. With the most common diseases to help rule out certain treatments. Another disadvantage would be the physical demands of this career. Veterinarians can be called in at any hour for emergencies. There are also many advantages, which include: impacting the lives of many for the better, keeping animals healthy, working towards the advancements of veterinary medicine, and more.

As a student decides to choose the career path of a veterinarian, one should be dedicated to the field and have passion for this career. The educational requirements for this field are demanding and take years to complete. An undergraduate degree in biology would set up a student for veterinary school. In order to be successful in veterinary medicine, one needs to continuously educate themselves and focus on the best way to treat their patients.

Important Aspects when Choosing a Career as a Businessman

Picking a profession to excel in for the rest of your life is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. The profession of business incorporates academic challenge and practical focus. Studying business allows you to choose from a variety of degrees which enable you to earn a comfortable living and make advancements within the field.

Although a common career choice, studying the major of business can potentially create a different experience for everyone. It is a “combination of academic challenge and practical focus,” which makes the prospect of studying a business degree highly appealing for those attracted to the competitive, yet collaborative learning environment offered by many business schools and departments. It is common to see students enter the study of business without knowing for certain what it entails and what to expect. But, for most people, the answer to the question “why study business?” is best answered by reference to possible careers with a business degree.

With a degree in business, the options for what one can do with it are endless; there is a plethora of job opportunities and career options that can best fit one’s interests and needs. Business graduates go on to work in myriad different sectors, and some career paths are very unconventional from those one would typically associate with business in general.

More obvious careers with a business degree include roles in accounting and finance departments, which take in large numbers of business degree graduates. Aside from these careers, there is a high demand for business graduates to go into marketing and advertising. In addition, plenty of job opportunities are available in retail, sales, human resources, and business consultancy. “The diversity and plenitude of careers with a business degree underlies the subject’s appeal for many students.”

With such a wide array of job options, business graduates can oftentimes feel overwhelmed and are unsure of how to start developing their career after graduation. One common path is joining a graduate training scheme. Joining one of the many graduate training schemes should definitely be considered if unsure how to start developing one’s career after graduation. Graduate training schemes can take many formats depending on the employer, but usually allow graduates to experience many aspects of both the role and the organization as a whole. These schemes are run by many large and international companies, and they often allow graduates to spend time completing traineeships in different parts of the business, and often different regions of the world, before opting for a particular career track to pursue.

One could also utilize their business degree to pursue roles within SMEs, which stands for small-to-medium sized enterprises. Aside from SMEs but similar places a business degree can be used include innovative new start-ups, charities, non-profit organizations and NGOs, or non-governmental organizations. If one has a bright idea and the knowledge to back it up, they may even consider launching their own business. Entrepreneurship is a somewhat risky, yet common path people with business degrees choose to pursue.

As mentioned earlier and a common theme within all career paths, earnings potential is at the heart of what motivates many business students. It must be noted that one should not expect a huge business degree salary immediately after they graduate. The skills and knowledge gained from a business degree should facilitate your career progression, making it easier to climb into management-level positions with higher salaries.

Another common idea that must be remembered is that a business degree itself does not automatically mean a high salary. However, it is promising to know that graduating from a highly reputed business school with strong grades is certainly likely to open up some interesting opportunities and perhaps a large business degree salary. In the end, each individual still needs to prove his or herself and must be ready to work hard if they want to reach their career and salary goals. Most importantly, someone pursuing any career in business has to be prepared for plenty of competition as the business field is quite competitive.

For those studying at master’s level, business degree salary expectations are likely to be higher. This can be seen from statistics and a quantitative point of view. According to the latest TopMBA.com Jobs & Salary Trends Report, salaries for MBA graduates average 116,300 dollars in the US and Canada. In Western Europe, the average earnings for those with an MBA are a little lower, while the expected salary in the Asia-Pacific region is around 85,900 dollars. For those of whom salary is of utmost importance, it may be worth researching the latest salary trends and forecasts for different business specializations, as well as looking into the regions of the world which are reporting the highest demand for business graduates. Information of this sort can easily be accessed and is beneficial in educating individuals on what kind of paying jobs are out there.

Different business careers have their own aspects characteristic to them that are important to be educated on in order for individuals with business degrees to choose the occupation best fit for them. First comes marketing careers. To work in marketing, one needs very good communication skills, as they are going to have to persuade others that their suggested strategy is the right one to pursue. They will also have to be able to plan ahead. For instance, in a marketing career, an individual might have to to decide what activities to include in their campaign for the coming year and how they will spend their budget, but also be flexible and prepared for if things, such as prices, change. Lastly, they’ll need to deal politely but firmly with suppliers’ salespeople, when they get in touch to buy one product and they want to sell them lots of others.

Next comes specialist digital roles. For specialist digital roles, which include pay per click (PPC) marketing, one needs to be good with data and spotting patterns in numbers. The same applies if someone wants to work in market research. For more general business roles, individuals need some ability to analyze data, an element of creativity and to be reasonably confident with other people. People with jobs in business will be likely to cooperate and collaborate with lots of different colleagues at all levels of the company and also to have lots of contact with suppliers and with members of their target market. It’s also important to be resilient, “in case one’s great new idea for a campaign has cold water poured all over it by your boss or the CEO.”

If an individual works in what is known as business to business marketing (B2B). They’ll need to feel comfortable producing work that has a slick. Business-like feel, and to portray this image his or herself in their interactions with others. Patience is key. As they might also need to be prepared to wait around. While their ideas are escalated up the company hierarchy for approval or modification before they can put them into practice.

In contrast from business to business marketing is business to consumer marketing (B2C). Business to consumer marketing might suit someone if they want a career that’s a bit more creative, fast paced and able to react to current trends. For example, someone working in business to consumer marketing might set up a competition to win the latest must-have item or book a stall at a music festival or big event to promote their charity.

Many marketing roles, particularly the more generalist ones. involve representing the company to the outside world. Individuals within this field will probably be expected to meet suppliers or clients. And attend events that are popular with their target market. On the downside, it’s unlikely that these meeting and events will all be near an individual’s homebase office, and not all events will take place during normal working hours, which can be challenging. That being said, people within this job field need to be adaptive, flexible and prepared to work some evenings or weekends when necessary. They also might have to travel to different parts of the country, or the world, meaning they are away from home from time to time. However, individuals will generally know well in advance when this will be, so they can plan accordingly. This kind of job with these aspects is most certainly not fit for everyone. Some people might enjoy getting out of the office. But find that they can’t always attend evening or weekend commitments outside of work. Making this type of career difficult.

Furthermore, the career path of business has endless different roads to take and a world of possibilities for what the future will hold. It all depends on what one’s personal interests are and what career choice and its demands are best fit for them. What may seem as a problem or con of certain business career to one person can be another’s selling point on why they want that occupation. This wide array of choice makes studying business a smart and flexible major to study and can ultimately lead to so many different careers.

How to Overcome Indecision when Choosing a Career?

I gravitate toward the subjective approach of career indecision. Personally, I feel as though the logical positivist perspective creates a negative connotation toward career indecision. The first step outlines indecision as a dichotomy which is classifying individuals as decided or undecided in regards to their careers. There was research conducted to see if students were indecisive due to a personality, academic, or biographical problem (Sivickas, 1995, page 364). I don’t believe it is that simple nor should it be presented as a “problem” or “defect”. This type of perspective can cause an individual to change their self-concept negatively. Not everyone is lucky enough to know exactly what career path they want and the steps to get them there. There are many factors as to why an individual is indecisive. For example, going back to the case last week of Dorece, she was very indecisive because she had a lot of outside influences so she is unable to commit to a career. After reading the subjective approach, I think it is because she hasn’t recognized her life themes yet. I believe she is too focused on everyone around her and their opinions as opposed to her life experiences and attributes she has that could be useful in a career decision making process. The steps that Savickas outlines get progressively stronger in my opinion. Like I said before, there are many reasons as to why an individual is indecisive and the multidimensional concept recognizes that. Dorece would fall under the commitment to career choice subgroup. Ultimately, I feel that being indecisive should not create a negative barrier but should be thought of as a sign of a positive transformation.

I believe career decision is better viewed as an attempt to “construct the whole that will clarify the parts.” This perspective causes people to reflect on past experiences and make connections to the present and even future. A quote that stuck out to me while I was reading was “Choices are not isolated; choice are embedded within an ongoing pattern of living” (Sivickas, 1995, page 366). There is meaning and purpose to every decision or choice that is made and exploring some of them could help an individual reach a new possibility in their career path. There could be some form of objective pathology preventing the process but I do not have enough experience to have a strong opinion towards that. Other people who either have experienced this themselves or know someone who has experienced this will have a much stronger opinion. I would be interested to read other cases that include an example so I can obtain more knowledge and be able to expand my interventions that I could use.

I immediately connect the case study to the first proposition in Super’s theory, which explains that every person is unique and is made up of individualized strengths and weaknesses (Brow, 2017, page. 71). During the case study, the client was able to recognize her own strengths and weaknesses based on experiences and therefore was able to make connections as to where she is right now in her life and where she wants to be in the future. I also feel that being able to overcome career indecision correlates with career maturity in Super’s theory. If someone is able to overcome this obstacle then they are ready and able to handle other situations that may arise with their career in the future. I connect with Super’s theory because I am able to associate cases I have read so far to at least a few of his propositions in a way that makes sense to me. He has many propositions because there are many aspects that go into career development and I agree with that. The case study connects with pieces of the other theories as well. I can relate her case study to Krumboltz’s theory of happenstance and decision making. The only part of the theory I do not agree with is that the influence of inheritance on the development of interests, values, and personality traits is not taken into consideration (Brown, 2017, page 88). I believe this should be acknowledged in the process of career indecision of an individual. I don’t think there is one isolated incident that causes an individual to be indecisive, therefore all avenues should be explored.  The results of the study showed that an increase in career decision self-efficacy does not always relate to decreases in career indecision (Reed & Skaar, 2010, page 50).

The study was conducted on 100 college students taking a constructivist career course, which focused on empowerment. Most of the students felt more empowered but it did not change their indecisiveness. Some of the assignments included: a career genogram, my story writing sample, comparative analysis, career lifeline and obituary, internship search, and much more (Reed & Skaar, 2010, page 44). The results were measured with the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale, which shows an individual’s confidence in their ability to complete career tasks. (Reed & Skaar, 2010, page 46). There are other factors that influence career indecision and should be explored when working with a client. I do believe constructivist counseling is a good place to start and many of the assignments the college students had to complete in the study were beneficial. These are more tools that can be used when exploring career development with a client. In my opinion the “big picture” is career development and part of that could be when an individual becomes indecisive. Making connections from both articles to some of the theories will help create interventions that can be used in the future.

The Impact of our Choices on Creating a Successful Career

Life is about choices. Choices which make in lives arise out on how someone perceives reality and what possibilities someone can fathom as being true. Everyone is free to choose their path in life. In modern days, there are lots of real-life examples who are brave enough to step out from their comfort zone and be able to adapt to an entirely new environment to them. Everyone should have their own talents, if he does not have one, it is only because he does not discover that and how to fully utilize it, or maybe he has to explore more on himself. According to the research done by the New York Times, there are 80 percent of the freshmen who have declared a major at Penn State are uncertain about their major. Some of them even have changed their minds and decide to change their major after they have declared, not only once. This is a typical example of the one who does not know their talents and unfortunately choose the wrong path in life. However, life should not be controlled by the past; exploration should not be stopped by the growing ages. Everyone should have an active role in the choice of life, exploratory ones are always urged to try more and experience more.

Life is changing. Change can help to improve oneself by enriching ones’ life experience. The only way of growth is through change. The one who accepts the opportunity to change should make himself a better person. Even the former president of US, Barack Obama once says, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” Be fearless, never be afraid to change is one of the ways which leads to success in life as well. The following examples are the one who is considered as successful after they have taken a step out of their comfort zone and changed their careers even after 30 years old. The first one is Ray Kroc, he spent his career as a milkshake-device salesman before buying McDonald's at age 52 in 1954. He then grew it into the world's biggest fast-food franchise and it becomes one of the most popular fast-food restaurants nowadays. The second one is Jeff Bezos, who had a lucrative career in computer science on Wall Street and took on top roles at various financial firms before transitioning to the world of e-commerce and launching Amazon at 31.

In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American changes their jobs about 15 times between the ages of 18 and 46. Some of the most successful people in the country were used to drive by circumstances and conditioning, they did not start out on a career path anywhere close to that which eventually made them happy, rich or both, but later on, they made changes and choices in response to that and shaped their own destiny. Choice is the most powerful tool that ones have in hand, everything boils down to choice. Having existed in the field of infinite possibilities of life, every choice making shuts an infinite number of doors and at the same time, opens an infinite number of doors. It is just the matter of bravery to walk out this step, no one is alone, and there is always somebody who wants to make changes. New life is always made by a new choice.

How Easy is it to Choose a Career when you’re Royalty?

Élisabeth Vigée-Le Brun’s career centered around her royal affiliations. She was born in France in the 1700s, and just like the aforementioned painters, her father, Louis Vigée, was also an artist. He supported her passion for the arts and did not prevent her from learning valuable artistic skills. Her skills attracted the attention of Queen Marie Antoinette. Vigée-Le Brun created a portrait of her majesty, who loved it so much that she deemed Vigée-Le Brun the Queen’s favorite artist (50 pg. 55).

This royal relationship helped Vigée-Le Brun’s career to thrive. One important obstacle the Queen removed from her path relates her husband, Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Le Brun. Due to his profession as an art dealer, the Académie Royale de Peinture initially refused to accept Vigée-Le Brun because of her connection to the art business.

Fortunately, the Queen made sure that the Academy accepted Vigée-Le Brun (pg.44 Broadstrokes). Vigée-Le Brun’s success soared following her admittance into the Academy. She more portraits for the royal family, and exhibited many of her works at the Académie Royale de Peinture. When the French Revolution began, Vigée-Le Brun was at risk due to her connections to royalty. The painter, however, demonstrating an adaptable and determined nature, moved to Italy until the revolution ended (50 pg. 55). This wise move saved her career. Not everyone felt the need to adjust in analogous situations. In many ways, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard echoed the path of Vigée-Le Brun. The Académie Royale de Peinture voted to accept her and she also painted for royals. In fact, Labille-Guiard was so successful that she exhibited at the Academy’s Salon, a feat achieved by few women at that point.

She differed from Vigée-Le Brun because she chose instead to stay in France during the revolution despite her connections to the very royals the revolution fought. While she avoided the guillotine, the new ruler demanded the destruction of all of her old work for the previous royal family (Broadstrokes pg. 42-49). In contrast, even without France’s royal family’s patronage, Vigée-Le Brun had a “confident manner in the presence of nobility, her diligence, and her skills secured for Élisabeth Vigée-Le Brun not only fame and numerous commissions from the courts of Europe, but also five honorary memberships in the academies concerned” (50 pg. 55).

Under her new friendship with Czarina Catherine II and her family, Vigée-Le Brun’s reputation as a brilliant portraitist continued. She produced hundreds of portraits, including one self-portrait of her and her daughter (50 pg. 55). This painting not only illustrates their bond but it also demonstrates Vigée-Le Brun did not choose between marriage and career. She chose both, unlike many women who succumbed to societal pressures and abandoned a career of independence for their duty to family. Élisabeth Vigée-Le Brun’s adept ability to develop and sustain relationships with royalty allowed her to have a long and successful painting career.

How to Build a Successful Career as a Pharmacist?

I’ve been extremely interested in the helping people through medicine for as long as I can remember. Because of this, I’ve always known that I want to have a career in the medical field. As I grew and learned more about the field, I quickly realized that some of the careers in it wouldn’t be a good fit for me as I become nauseous when in contact with large amounts of blood. Furthermore, I decided a career as an X-ray tech wouldn’t fit well either as cracked bones make me cringe. However, I discovered early on that I love chemistry. That love blossomed with the help of a wonderful high school chemistry teacher during who’s teaching I found very effective; it’s a difficult subject but I’ve always looked at it as a challenge, almost like a puzzle that I’m eager to solve. Once I found my passion for chemistry, I knew whatever path I decided to pursue had to be heavily involved with it. When I put my loves of medicine and chemistry together, I landed on pharmacist as my career of choice; a career that would inspire joy, fulfillment, and a sense of humanitarianism in me.

As mentioned previously, my primary long-term goal is to become a pharmacist and having the opportunity to work towards receiving my doctorate in pharmacy is the next step in reaching that goal. I recently applied for a job as a pharmacy tech and I am truly looking forward to the opportunity to become more hands on and learn the “ins-and-outs” of the career itself. I believe one of the things I will enjoy most about this experience as a pharmacy tech, upon receiving the opportunity, is the environment. Past experiences in pharmacies has led me to believe they’re a very friendly and clean environment. All things considered, I believe that being a pharmacist is the right career for me and I couldn’t be more excited to see what the future holds as I pursue it.

Growing up with both parents in the military, change is normal for me. After living in five different cities and two different countries, I realized that learning to adapt was my only choice. I find myself extremely thankful for all those moves, even if that wasn’t the case at the time. I believe growing up in various cultures and environments has provided me with the ability to navigate diverse environments, relationships, and circumstances; I feel confident these skills will contribute to future success in my career path. For example, I lived in Germany for five years and found the language barrier to be a difficult obstacle. It made me feel timid and unsure about how I was going to create a life in surroundings that were far different than what I was used to. Now looking back, I realized my ability to make friends and form bonds in a team environment had carried me through that change in my life and ultimately made Germany like a second home.

Another obstacle I learned to conquer was my diverse education as I had moved between nine schools. This was a challenge because each school had its own teaching method and concepts across all subjects. My experience while in Germany was the most unique. The educational system there is a lot more hands on, rather than the lecture style I feel is predominant here in America. The teachers did their best to take advantage of the resources the country made available to them. For instance, we were always visiting historical sites to enhance the learning experience. As I mentioned earlier, I am thankful for these kinds of circumstances that required critical thinking, flexibility, and teamwork skills to properly adjust to. Furthermore, I tried to register in dual-enrollment courses as often as possible, despite the ever-changing circumstances, to get a head start on my college career. I realized early on that focus and determination in high school would lead to a path of success afterwards and I couldn’t let the challenges I faced get the best of me.

After graduating high school, I began my college career at Tennessee Tech University, but I made the decision to transfer to Middle Tennessee State University as I found it in my best interests to be close to home for as long as I could. The move to MTSU worked out better than I could have anticipated as it has been a great fit for both me and my family. From the University itself to the great professors I have had, the past few years could not have gone any smoother. I am looking forward to concluding my time here at MTSU and entering the next phase of my educational career soon.

While studying at MTSU, I was given the opportunity to work with Epic Nail where I found myself interacting with people in many different social classes as I had before in my moves. This experience only furthered my ability to interact and construct bonds with different kinds of people – some of those connections I still maintain today. Among other skills, I learned how to be efficient with money, keep a clean environment, as well as staying self-motivated to ensure that everything was put in place, stocked, and appointments were made. The ability to utilize time management to ensure all daily tasks of the job were completed is one I took a great deal of pride in. By being there and ensuring I was performing at peak potential, I created more time for the coworkers to concentrate on the specific projects they had to do instead of worrying them about what needed to be done or if will it be done.

As I prepare for this next phase of both my life and my educational career, I am realizing how much hard work has gone into where I currently find myself. I realize the long nights I have turned in over the years are far from over, and that is a challenge I readily accept. I couldn’t be more excited to embark on this new journey regardless of where it may lead.

The Career of Psychology

The dissection of one's mental state as a human with all of its complexities, better known as psychology. The fascination to comprehend the nuances of emotions derived by each unique individual has experts delving into the soul to grasp answers. The career of Psychology contains, interesting history, enriching educational paths, and a unique day to day life with new challenges encountered. Psychology allows for people of various backgrounds and psychological approaches to contemplate and consider other behaviors, aside from their own, in order to work and live harmoniously. This discipline albeit instrumental in resolving many complex human and primate relationships and psychological needs. Negotiations between various groups employ the use of psychological approaches to remedy tumultuous situations in both the workplace, and at home..

In 1889, psychologist Alfred Binet took a fond passion towards psychology surrounding general intelligence. Binet helped establish the first psychology lab in France, the Ribot, where he pursued many research studies on human intelligence “Alfred Binet Bibliography”. He worked to establish experimental approaches to discover a way to measure intelligence along with reasoning abilities. The achievement of this goal in which creating a series of different tests, allowed for the administering of test subjects to provide data. Gathering and analysis of the specific data points concluded a pattern to scientifically determine outcomes. After many studies, devising a single test that along with the age of the test subject, would reveal their intellectual age. Binet then founded the first psychological journal in French called the L’Annee Psychological, or “The Psychological Year” “Alfred Binet Bibliography”. After death, his research maintained its relevance linking psychological studies to the brain. Todays IQ testing closely resembles a revised testament to the accomplishments of Binet’s Intelligence testing.

Ever since an Austrian psychologist named Sigmund Freud introduced the idea of psychoanalysis, as well as hysteria, psychology continuously evolved. Starting in 1895, Freud took interest in the idea of hysteria when a colleague fell ill, with symptoms including sleepwalking and hallucinations soon after her father passed away (Gillam). He defined hysteria as a mental disorder derived from drastic changes in sensation experiences, as well as emotional misjudgement. This patient had a concept, that maybe, if she could explain to them why these symptoms occurred, they could better understand how to treat it. This concept later led to a theory called “The Talking Cure” that Freud published a book on called Studies of Hysteria on (Gillam). This case allowed Freud to interpret patients dreams which later allowed him to reveal their unconscious desires. By doing this, he introduced a new branch of psychology called psychoanalysis, studies of the mind.

In the early 1920’s people believed in two theories which describes humans as nothing more than creatures of habit. The first theory explained that humans do not make decisions based on their own thoughts, but instead out of habits in our DNA. The second theory says one can only distinguish between individuals by test (Devonis). 1924, a man named John B. Watson proposed that everyone will manipulate situations in order to receive optimum results, such as a raise at work and proved this theory. This theory, called Behaviorism, which Watson later wrote the publication called Behaviorism (Devonis). Between the 1920’s and 1930’s, experimentation to prove these ideas shifted from the use of human subjects into animal subjects. By doing so, they realized that the theory of human actions basing off of instinct was incorrect, and instead derived out of free choice, also known as individualism (Devonis). Although human test subjects still appear today, psychologists tend to use animal subjects, such as monkeys, instead due to newly developed ethical guidelines.

In 1958, psychologist Harry Harlow wondered if primates attach to their mothers due to their need of food, or the need for maternal physical contact. After weeks of proposing different methods to answer this question, he came to a conclusion. He decided he would design a wire “mother” made of wire who would provide food, as well as a cloth “mother” who did not provide food to the baby monkeys (Vicedo). As months passed, he begins to see a trend, the monkeys prefer to spend time with the cloth mother instead of the wire mother, despite the food coming from the wire monkey. Physical contact becomes paramount for proper development and good mental health to incorporate maternal care as these studies show (Vicedo). These findings represent not only primates need for maternal attachment, but also humans need for physical comfort contact for healthy development and future relationships. Harlow’s discovery contributed to one of the most important findings in behavioral psychology, that answered the debate of food versus comfort.

The patients they talk to in the emergency room will typically explain to the doctor what kind of symptoms and feelings they experience (Preda). Depending on the severity and legitimacy of the patients’ symptoms, the psychiatrist will choose to either admit them, or sent home with different instructions on how to resolve their issue. If chosen to admit the patient. The lead psychiatrist will allow an intern to present the case in order to initiate a group conversation. On a resolution for the problem at hand (Preda). In order to make a diagnosis, psychiatrists and interns will evaluate the circumstances of the patients’ symptoms and feelings. They will elaborate possible causes in a psychosocial train of thought in order to accurately diagnose the patient.

A school counselor will face different situations each day. In the morning, she will typically work on car line, the school cart, and calming students with separation anxiety from their parents (Mayes). Each day will vary, but each week, the counselor prepares a lesson plan taught based on widespread conflict such as bullying. The school counselor will go into a different grade each week to discuss different lessons. Such as how to react to a situation, or bullying awareness. Their job also has to do with the needs of the students. They will have individual meetings with students who have either come to them with a conflict. Or if their parents request them to talk to their child (Mayes). Counselors must keep things such as academic time missed in mind while talking to the student, so it will usually last around 15-30 minutes maximum so that they will not miss academic opportunities. A school counselor shows dedication to improving lives of students such. As talking to their teachers about having more success in school, and attending to any mental health needs the student may have.

Not only do school counselors help improve the lives of students academically. But also involves themselves in multiple extra-curricular activities. Ms. Aislinn Mayes takes charge of the Lower School student council, and also the fifth grade Safety Patrol Club (Mayes). This helps to build stronger bonds and trusting relationships with the students in order for them to feel comfortable talking to them if they ever have a problem. In addition to these activities, they will typically meet with other counselors around the school campus to do weekly check-ins and discuss similar problems they may see at home (Mayes).

The profession of Psychology has made numerous contributions, especially to Health Psychology. Health Psychology, best defined as the study of how humans’ brains interact with their muscles. Health Psychology can help patients fight diseases like glaucoma. A condition in which pressure builds up in the eye, and potentially leading to blindness. When diagnosed with glaucoma many people develop. Different psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, as well as increased stress (Mendez-Ulrich). Glaucoma will decrease ones health as well as quality of life due to the new adaptations made to continue normal functioning. Since the 1900’s, correlations between glaucoma and the use of psychology has had extremely positive effects on the patients. While using psychology to help glaucoma. Health psychologists will help manage the negative effects resulting from the disease. Stress management classes, as well as the optimization of treatment plans (Mendez-Ulrich). These methods increase the lifespan and decrease the amount of treatment required for one to return to their normal lives. The impact health psychology has made on patients suffering. From glaucoma changes their lives and allows patients to positively. Accept treatment plans and therapy.

Psychology has positively impacted many people since its introduction. Ever since the 1900’s depression and anxiety present themselves. As the top most common mental illnesses experienced world wide. Individuals with mental illnesses such as depression. Have shown more separation from society and choose to rely on substances such. As alcohol and tobacco as coping mechanisms (Calhoon). Habits such as these promote an increase in heart disease, and early morbidity. Once the choice to participate in these behaviors, impulses become harder to stop, so a group of psychologists proposed the idea of 6 therapeutic lifestyle changes in order to get patients back on track. These six lifestyle changes include “being congruent, looking at the whole picture, developing competence and recognizing limits, finding what fits, drawing on psychologist skills, and addressing and removing barriers” (Calhoon). Including activities such as exercise and social interaction promotes the effectiveness of these changes. Often overlooked by therapists, these theories have shown high success rates in patients willing to embrace them. The impacts of embracing a healthy lifestyle decreases effects of mental illnesses on its own. Once a therapist learns how to individualize their patients and treatment styles. Improvements in disorders will skyrocket (Calhoon).

Psychology while a tremendously diverse field allows for an array of career applications. However all still rely on the premise of six approaches which embody the study of the human mind. The mind and soul hold the key to the universe and the complexity of all relationships. Entrigue to solve this paradox beacons many to pursue a career in the study of psychology. As human creativity evolves so do the psychological complexities which requires unraveling. This evolution creates an everlasting demand for all professionals educationally to meet the needs of all new and changing societal expectations of relationships, furthermore allowing increased use of pharmaceuticals, which provides employment opportunities in other career paths. Psychologists are also licensed to help people cope with mental illnesses like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia along with dealing with stress. Some good qualities they should have is being able to empathize with their patients, having good communication skills, and being able to create a bond of trustworthiness. Having these vital skills helps the psychologist assure the patient that they are being heard and cared for, it also helps to create a secure environment.

A psychologist’s main job is to help people improve their lives by using a type of therapy to be able to overcome traumatizing events, learning how to cope with a mental illness, or even couples counseling. Psychotherapy is the most common type of therapy which is often referred to as “talk therapy”. There are multiple other types of therapy but based on the issue the psychologist will see which one best benefits the person.

Education required to be a psychologist would be a PsyD or a (a Doctor of Psychology) PhD (a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology) this depends on the career goal. 4 to 5 years for a bachelor’s degree which helps with understanding human behaviors. 2 to 3 years for a master’s degree which is an introduction to the psychology field. 4 to 7 years for a doctoral degree which focuses more on practices and clinical work (Harvard Health Publishing).

My whole life I’ve been struggling with anxiety and depression. I always felt so lost and scared to tell anyone about what I felt. Until it was too much for me to handle and I almost did something that I would regret. My parents found a therapist for me who really changed my life and ever since then I have admired the work that psychologists do. They can help people in so many ways that for me its just unimaginable, their work truly inspires me.

Requirements for Building a Good Career

Interests and Requirements. The nature of this job that interests me the most is that it allows students an outlet to express themselves. High school can be a rough time for some students, and if they are anything like me art can be one of the few things they actually enjoy about school. The teachers that I had influenced me to be an art teacher, because they were some of the most understanding and open-minded people I had ever met.

They listened to what I had to say and the problems that I was struggling with, and the assignments they gave in class were actually enjoyable and fun. In order to become a teacher of any sort, one must have a bachelor’s degree in a subject that is teachable in schools. However, there is always the option to enroll in a bachelor’s program in education and have a minor in whatever it is you wish to teach as well. Along with having a bachelor’s degree, it is required to earn a teaching license that enables you to teach at public schools. Divisions and Outlooks In order to achieve a position as an art teacher, a degree in education would be required, as well as a minor in art so that the subject material is familiarized. (Other potential routes have also been mentioned, but this is the most popular route when one enters their field with the intention of being a teacher.) A plethora of courses would be tackled in order to achieve this, many being fairly advanced. A couple of examples would be Instructional Tech Strategies and Teaching in a Pluralistic Society.

While classes of this level of specification may seem pointless to some, it’s for that very reason that they’re necessary — this is what draws the line between any average individual and one with a professional degree. With knowledge towards instructional tech strategies, those pursuing educational degrees with be capable of comprehending the ever-changing methods that teachers employ as time progresses. Likewise, an understanding of teaching in a pluralistic society promotes teaching methods that involve all walks of life for all types of people, engaging those that are being taught in whatever manner necessary so that they might be capable of properly absorbing the information. Now, with the education necessary to become an art teacher being so specific, occupational outlooks may seem slim.

This isn’t necessarily the case though. In reality, a variety of position are available. This shown in the book 12 Steps to a New Career by C.J. Wellenstein when he states “At some point in your career, you’ll need to determine whether to change your function or field”. With the educational degree, one can always take any form of administrative, substitute, or aide position, even without the art specification. Likewise, the positions available broaden even further once one takes into consideration the fact that the positions of broaden with the expanse of grades of K-12. As far as career growth is concerned. One can either pursue a position as a professor. Being one of the most sought-after positions amongst professionals. Or a higher administrative position with the schooling system.

The position as a professor is more sought after due to the allure of a pay raise. Testing one’s own intelligence, and educating those that are truly impassioned with the studies of art themselves. Professional Issue and Association An issue that’s currently presiding over the field of education. Whether dealing with art or any other subject, is the decline of the student-to-teacher ratio. This decline calls for a higher demand of teachers (OOH pg. 290).

While this issue adds strain to the educational system, it also has its strengths. Alongside progressive internal development over the years, advancement from external stances has been sought as well. An example would be the presence of the Association of American Educators. This association makes an active effort to unify teachers and promote collaboration and development within the nation, providing scholarships, useful resources, and benefits to members.

Sports Blogging: the Intriguing Career that Anybody Can do

From coffee shops to an office cubicle, nearly everyone can sit down and go to their favorite sports blog space and read up on all they missed from the night prior, but nobody really thinks as to who these bloggers are and how they stumbled upon such a career. Sports blogging is a dull name for a career that encompasses such a vast variety of subcategories and mysterious writers who seemingly come out of nowhere. It is regarded as the third most popular category of blogs on the internet with names like ESPN and Barstool Sports known throughout households in the United States. It causes some to wonder how sports bloggers got to where they are or how they even got started causing more site traffic and even more revenue. With a new and exciting job that has the potential, it is bound to be criticized somewhere along the line, and sports bloggers have no shortage of critics, the majority of them being traditional sports journalists. The career path of sports blogging is new but it’s growing fast and filled with opportunities for startups, good pay, and the ability to work from home.

Many sports blog spaces start very small with people that simply enjoy writing, such as Barstool Sports, a company who started in Boston publishing blogs and is now worth millions of dollars. Barstool started as a small paper company that got recognition by handing out their articles at public bus and train stations to commuters (Spargo 2016). In ten years, Dave Portnoy took it from sports articles with comedical pokes to such vast content that they even have blogs specifically geared towards satirical pizza reviews (Spargo 2016). Portnoy, like many others in the same career as him, hated his job and wanted to pursue something he truly loved to do, and thus began Barstool Sports. In 2007, a man approached him and asked to build him a website, the company was valued around $10-15 million and grew by word of mouth, eleven years later, the value has boosted exponentially with an estimated value of $100 million (Shontell, Lebowitz 2018). A study from the University of Michigan in 2011 stated that in their findings all eight of the sports bloggers they interviewed had left their previous occupation mainly due to boredom, among other reasons stated throughout the study. The story of Barstool Sports is truly one of an underdog and will strongly support the topic and all of the facts of the next paragraph.

Merely a decade ago, if somebody said their new career was in the sports blogging market, they would be laughed at, now, they would be praised and asked their annual salary. Sports bloggers bring in an average salary of $51,000 dollars a year, those with more experience may even bring in six figures a year (Sports Management Degrees, “Salary”). Although, entry level bloggers may only bring in $19,000, but those who bring in that little are likely just starting or most likely doing it as a side job. The website “Sports Management Degrees” had this to say on the subject, “Get involved on social media to distribute your sports content across multiple sources, thus building a follower base. Making a living won’t come quickly, but make use of advertising on your blog to help your consistent posts pay off,” (Sports Management Degrees, “Getting Started”). Complaints about a sports blogger’s yearly salary must come few and far between, as most who succeed in the profession don’t get a degree in anything, and those who pursued a degree more often than not dropped out of postsecondary schooling when they stumbled upon their job (Sports Management Degrees, “Degree and Education Requirements”). In a study from the University of Michigan in 2011, of the eight bloggers they interviewed, nearly all of them reported making more money than their peers they had graduated with from highly accredited institutions with professional degrees. This fact also contrasts with studies done on traditional sports journalists in the past where the majority of journalists questioned stated that they were not happy with their annual salaries, unlike those who blog on the internet (Kian, Burden, & Shaw, “Discussion and Conclusion”). The same people who criticized sports bloggers for going into their current occupation will be equally as critical about the main topic of the next paragraph.

Another great perk of being a sports blogger is the ability to work from home and being able to write about games or news you see on TV. Research done by the University of Michigan for a peer reviewed study. Has shown that being able to work from home. Is the third highest reason for bloggers who decided to make it their full time vocation (Kian, Burden, & Shaw, “Home is Where the Blogger is”). Seven of the eight full time bloggers report. That the majority of their content is created at home. And four of the eight even said that all of their work is done at home (Kian, Burden, & Shaw, “Home is Where the Blogger is”). The majority of interviewees blogged. Through an independent website rather than a mainstream site, potentially skewing results as to who works from where. In Tim Arango’s article on the topic, “Tension Over Sports Blogging.” He states that the Texas Rangers. A team in Major League Baseball. Have even gone so far as to hire a very popular sports blogger who had previously blogged about the team. When describing the way he and his partner set up their website. And company, co-founder of Bleacher Report, David Nemetz. Had this to say, “the fan-bloggers with the best reputation ranking get better visibility on the site. As well as perks such as athlete interviews and game tickets arranged by Bleacher Report.” (Kho, pg. 24+). This type of model on a blogging site allows anybody to become a blogger. With no workload requirements while also allowing growth through production and quality of work. Ultimately putting their name out there to make money and take on a full time position.

In conclusion, the sports blogging business is booming and growing exponentially even as a very new occupation. In most cases it requires very little postsecondary schooling if any at all and this may turn some away and cause judgement but the numbers speak volumes, it is among very few other professions that anybody can do and make a living wage off of. The opportunities for promotions are vast and seemingly endless, making it a very easy job to take up on the side and eventually make it their only job. Along with that, web domains are free nowadays so anyone could start their own blog space and with the huge influence of social media promoting and advertising would be easy. All of these things paired with the fact that people could even work from home in their pajamas makes it a wonder that even more people haven’t picked up sports blogging on the side at the very least. At the end of the day, the career path of sports blogging is new but it’s growing fast and filled with opportunities for startups, good pay, and the ability to work from home.

Not just anybody can become a Physical Therapist you have to have special skills to be successful in this career like the following: The passion for helping people, patience, honesty, good communication skills, and good listening. You will need a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, and a bachelor's degree. There are a lot of colleges that have a physical therapist major like: University of Florida, University of Miami, and University of Delaware. I personally like the University of Miami. The University of Miami works well with what I want to major in because I will have enough to pay my tuition. To stay on campus, it would be $68,458 and with my major I would make $86,850 a year at least, so I wouldn’t have to worry about money issues. If I have loans to pay off after school, I would use 50% of my pay check to pay college debts off.

Opinion

Personally, I think a Physical Therapist fits me as a person great, because I love to help people and put other people first before I do myself. I always try and make everybody feel better when they are down or upset. How Can Humans Prepare for a Future-Proof Career?

Today’s present is tomorrows history. According to my research there is going to be immense competition in the future. And the sad part is that the population and problems of the world are increasing and jobs for humans are decreasing. Hence, it is going to very tough for the future generations to survive. Therefore, we are definitely going to have problems but moving ahead from that and getting success is going to be the main aim for us. Where, I think this is the thing that is going to motivate us immensely.

That means that jobs in the future will seem vastly one of a kind with the aid of the time students will definitely graduate university. The jobs of the future will absolutely be an extra amazing than those of the past. Good and bad old days of employees, co-workers and physical production, will let the machines handle that. Instead, future jobs may contain such information software and innovation. Machines are virtually doing us a favour. They are releasing humans up to explore as well as to test and find interesting solutions to the complicated problems, like environment pollution, garbage, insufficient-resources,utility-problem,etc.

Good part about this is that there won’t be a sudden drastic change in the world, it would slowly and gradually make a change which means that we would see how and where the trend is going on the graph. It will be very beneficial for humans to be guided. With present graph researchers that have noticed few important points.

Change will keep on happening. America and the rest of the world will experience social, cultural, economic, environmental, and technological changes. But many of them can't be predicted. New challenges may occur without any warning. And 'happy accidents' may also lead to nice new discoveries which can come up long-standing problems.

So, predicting the perfect jobs for the future requires skills that all kinds of variables will certainly have involvement in complicated and many possible ways around us that we never saw. Many of tomorrow's occupations and professions will probably result from modern scientific and advanced technology. But most future jobs don't exist yet, and a lot of them haven't even been imagined. In fact, in according to one of the estimates, almost two third of modern present day that have entered high school and colleges, these students will ultimately have occupations that don't presently exist.

One of the important things to sustain and to build future-proof career is creativity. What robots can do is use the information and the data which humans give them. We feed the data in them and then with the help of algorithms and permutations and combination they do the task. Which directly means that they cannot use the consciousness which a human can. Hence, till now jobs which does not need creativity will be taken over by technology and robots. This graph trends towards humanoids. Where doing a particular task exactly as humans and with all the physical appearances as humans. So labour work or non-conscious work will be vanished. Hence, humans should build their creativity and imagination part of their brain to sustain in the competition. People have always been dependent on someone or somewhere such as education degrees, jobs, management etc. But to build yourself you cannot learn or depend upon these things because if a person spends thousand of dollars in education as well as spends time to learn something and if that occupation is vanished there will be no use of what that person has learnt. And also, job dependency has gone, people are getting fired every day because of technology. Therefore, if you really want to gain success in the future try be as creative as you can and find an occupation where there is self-dependency and not getting worried about businesses who has technology. Because in the future, sensitive work like clinical operations that needs extreme perfection and experience and quality be done via robots. Robot surgeries – performed with the aid of four-armed robots – are fast picking up speed in the medical world, with miniature surgical contraptions on three of these palms providing a most vary of motion and precision. The fourth even has an excessive definition 3D digicam that can guide the physician via the procedure, making sure that there is no danger of error. Not only this there are many software which can do jobs of lawyers, drivers, and many other occupations and professions.

Then it comes financial strength. As the resources are decreasing day by day and the cost of basic needs and resources are increasing exponentially. Hence, if you are not financially stable, their will be a huge problem. To avoid this an average human should try to use the present to collect as much possible and try to multiply it in the form of investments, so that it will secure the future. Planning about the future in present will help humans to sustain a lot. Talking about financial strength, the governments of most of the countries are becoming more and more powerful in terms of economy. Hence, they should create rules for technology, such as to what extent should technology be used and what will be the jobs where you have to humans and to what extent can use of technology be allowed in a certain company.

It is very important that if we want our fellow students all around the globe to be well-prepared for life, sustainability and success after college, we should definitely develop the ability to grasp and search opportunities, challenges and problems through multiple perspectives. It is this type of change that will have a driving force, innovation, and drive our economy forward.

Businesses should be operated and handled globally as well as with more culturally diverse – than in the past. And chances are that co-workers, clients and stakeholders should be working for a global market than a specific part in the world. The more experience you have to get of working with them, the more confident we will have. This will make you more dominant to employers of the future. Work hard to keep your technical skills current, even if new developments do not seem directly linked to your current job. Otherwise, you may need to catch up a huge amount before you can head off in a new direction in the future.

If that means having familiar with tech related languages, virtual whiteboards, operable technology, or AI, do it. And if you're in a hardcore technical field or industry, you should be more proactive and stay current – even if your company does not. Revise and evolve your thinking according to time and your options for career progress and be alert about responding to a lack of opportunities, even if it means changing your occupation, or your career.

We may be fortunate enough to work for an organization where there can be a clear and attractive job path ahead of us but, for many of us, this will not be the case.

This may not be an issue if we are in a fast-growth industry, where opportunities appear frequently. But, if we are in a slow-growth or decaying industry, there may be no on ward professional path and your development may be blocked, however hard you work. This can lead to frustration, boredom and failure to achieve your potential, and you may choose to try an alternative path.

This definitely can also create a need for extreme skill levels, and not just when it comes to technology but also in industries like entertain, service etc.

We have already witnessed the fact that we have a college degree that doesn’t make you stand out anymore. After all, 33.4% of all Americans now have college degrees. While that figure may seem a bit low on its own, it’s the highest it’s ever been, and only continuing to grow. Since having a college degree or formal education may not be enough to get you ahead in your career, the trick is to never stop learning

Hence, to draw conclusion I would say that there are many problems which are going to be generated but not only that there will be many simplifications and cost cutting too. But because of that many human required jobs will get vanish. This will affect world economy, and sales of companies. Hence, to nullify this we should start thinking and follow the right path for ourselves which will make our career future-proof. And we should always be practical and keep a knowledge of how the future trend is going and what more I can learn and do so that I can be successful in a competitive populated world.

The Role of Motivation in Choosing a Doctor’s Career

Patient care have been experiencing widespread change recently because 21st century dwellers are getting sicker. Older and prone to more chronic conditions than in the past. The old healthcare model, designed around acute care is not applicable again. Thus, professional nurses who are ready to lose themselves in the service others are now in high demand in the healthcare field. Which implies that putting all passion and effort in one's job to brings. About satisfaction and greatest result that can benefit one personally and the society in general. Technical and leadership skill amongst oncology nurses. Is very essential to build patient centered care and be successful in the career. In other to flourish as a nurse. Priorities like providing high quality care, creating a safe environment. Ensuring patients safety and getting rid of all barriers. Which can interrupt working conditions and disasters in the healthcare field should be considered.

Motivational skills is essential in providing satisfactory patient-centered care. Because the long term attainable goal already planned to benefit and lift up. The healthcare field is exhibited, It is related to job satisfaction that keep workers at the job over time. Although, work related negative feature like burnout and workplace psychological harassment tends. To affect motivations in nurses and safety in general which makes nurses motivational skill decrease. Efficiency and passion is important when nurses demonstrate great motivational skill. Because it boost the desire to provide quality care to the patient. Which implies that “Workaholic nurses are extrinsically motivated” because they work based on instrumental value and not by the enjoyment gotten from the job (Toode 249). Individual background factors like age and gender is associated with nurses inspiration as the level of skills seems to increase and reach the top level at the middle of the profession. Experienced nurses “over 35 are more motivated”. By knowledge and accomplishment gained within that period of time. “Female nurses are more motivated” than male associate because sex role and family obligation tend. To strengthen work performance (Razee 30). If psychological issue and factors such as age and organizational issues can be handled and overcomed personally without considering the age and gender quality healthcare that will build trust and bring professionalism in the career will be attained.

Patients’ view concerning the level of the care received are extremely reliant on the level of interactions with the caregiver. Healthcare providers should directly have effect on the care of patients and families through the use of curative communication and being open to inputs transmitted by the victim by applying creativity to enhance issues that need to be solved. Professionalism in giving proper and precise feedback. Is becoming alarming in the patient care setting. Nurses should be able to provide answers to difficult questions. Like “am I dying” which does not have a particular answer. But creative and motivational ways can be applied to give accurate respond to the question to reduce patient anxiety. And mistrust in the organization (Baer 45). Statements said should also be put in a very understandable manner by using lay terms and “competency for end-of-life care” that require nurses to communicate sensitively with patients, families and other healthcare team.(Coyne 46). This will help nurses attain the skills required. And if a patient has a particular hope focused at a fixed goal. It will be suitable to find a way to achieve this goal if restorative communication and strategies are displayed while working.

Occupational maturity and stability is a crucial element in perception of the advancement of vocational path and successful choice makings for future. The problems of environments in this modern era has brought very diverse and different methods. Elevated working pressure in nurses results to low quality of working state such that after work, intelligence and occupational maturity of nurses is at a “level less than 99%” but if the quality of life can be high, opportunity in solving problems, creating mutual benefit, great satisfaction and efficiency of workers will occur (Anvari 46) A dependable source for the management to settle the dispute of order and chaos is “intellectual intelligence” which lead to recognition of the ethics of employees and build reliance between healthcare workers (Maleki 45). Based on this, having a good view on the contemporary stability within the system drift more attention to promotion job and delivering quality care.

The greatest pressure experienced by nurses in time is stabilizing work with personal life because throughout the history of nursing their have issue of personnel shortage which increases the issue of stress. Regardless of this, It is very important to be able to tolerate. And manage stress properly by nurses in other to avoid causing negative effect on the healthcare worker. Patient and organizations involved. Most Personal issues with job demands are “positively. Associated with emotional exhaustion” that raises the level of stress involved in patient care (Donoso 806). Collaborative management by creating environments of teamwork. And creativity can enable nurse flourish and focus on their duty. Time management will also ensure proper stress management. Because one of the main factor for stress is the “shortened length of time” (Turley 205). Provided to nurses to deliver complete care to patient. Which causes inefficiency and difficulty in delivering quality care which most caregivers find hard to shed light on. Therefore nurses should be able to overcome emotional labor. And be flexible to any procedure that can benefit the patient and create end-life-goal. This can be solved by “empowering nurses against stress” (Jafar 398) and making proper planning and schedules to ensure proper stress tolerance and encouraging adequate rest and exercise after work.

Nurses’ creativity plays a significant role in health and well-being. They are critically positioned to provide creative solutions for current and future global health challenges.

A Career Path to Become an Emergency Medical Technician

The career path that I have chosen is to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). People frequently encounter situations in which they are in need of rapid assistance. The job of an EMT fascinates me because I want the ability to do something that matters in the lives of other people. It is likely that I will help to save the lives of many different people throughout the course of my career as an EMT. Decision-making is an essential skill for people in the EMT field.

The decisions that an EMT makes can have a long-lasting impact. They can impact the EMT's career and future employment opportunities, and they can also impact the person who is in need of emergency medical treatment. Some situations exist in which not all of the details are available. EMTS must act fast and make informed decisions about what the best course of action is to take. Since many situations involve life or death, an EMT must have the ability to remain calm while under pressure. Decision-making Styles.

There are generally four categories of decision-making styles. The categories are directive, conceptual, analytical, and behavioral (Snowden & Boone 3). An analysis of each style will be provided, along with an explanation of which style or combination of styles would be most useful for an EMT.

The directive style of decision-making is authoritative and focuses on short-term results. The leader does not consult other group members or attempt to perform any major analysis before arriving at a decision. Under a directive decision-making style, information is typically not share with all of the group members (Larson et al. 485). The leader relies on his/her own knowledge or information in order to arrive at a conclusion about what to do. Speed is the main benefit of the directive style of decision-making. Most of the other styles require more thought and analysis or feedback before action can be taken on a particular decision.

Conceptual decision-making is based on creative problem-solving. Rather than analyzing things in a traditional way, conceptual thinkers like to be artistic and think outside of the box. One downside is that there are some situations in which a traditional course of action is the best option all of the time. The conceptual thinker may waste time or resources by constantly trying to think up new ways to solve a problem that has essentially already been solved.

The analytical style involves analyzing large sets of data before figuring out what the best decision is. It works best in situations where numerical or quantitative data is available. The benefit of the analytical style is that it often results in precise solutions that are likely to work. The main downside is the amount of time it takes before a decision is reached. Some situations exist in which a rapid response is needed. Analytical decision-makers perform better in situations where they can take their time and make sure they do not make mistakes when analyzing data.

The behavior style is based on group interaction. People with the behavioral style of decision-making usually get feedback from everyone in a group before making a final decision. They also encourage collaboration and the sharing of ideas within the group. Decisions are typically made based on whatever option would be best for the largest number of people on a team or in a company. A major benefit of the behavioral style is that it can help to build strong teams within an organization. Workers are likely to stay motivated if they feel like their voice is heard and their manager has their interests in mind. A downside is that it can sometimes prioritize the wishes of a team of workers over the larger interests of the organization as a whole (Korsgaard et al. 74).

Many individuals have a decision-making style that combines elements of one or more of the four listed. The best style for one scenario may not be the best choice under different circumstances. Being flexible and adapting decision-making to the situation is important.

In most situations related to a career as an EMT, the directive style of decision making would be most appropriate. This is true for several reasons. For one, the directive style is one of the quickest styles of decision-making. No time is taken to consult team members or obtain feedback. Speed is important in emergency situations. Another important part of the directive style is that the person making the decision relies on his/her own prior knowledge. EMTs are highly trained individuals that have previously learned how to handle a wide variety of situations that they may encounter. Although there may be the occasional rare case where the EMT must think creatively in order to determine the best course of action, most cases involve a situation where the EMT follows training and procedure. In those cases, group feedback and creativity are not important. A brief analysis of the situation may be needed in some emergency situations, but there is no need for a long and thorough analysis of things like numbers or other data. An EMT must have the ability to be confident in the decisions they make. Their medical training should be the main source of information that they draw upon whenever they encounter emergency situations. The ability to work in groups is also important, because the medical care process typically involves collaboration between different medical professionals. However, it is not necessary for groups to spend time brainstorming and thinking out ideas whenever someone is in an emergency and needs rapid help.

The Theme of Relationships in Scenes from an Italian Restaurant by Billy Joel

"Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" is one of my favorite Billy Joel songs. I love the song so much, that I have the vinyl version of Joel's 1977 album, The Stranger, framed and hung in my room. The song features three different songs merged into one, making it Joel's longest song. The song highlights many different parts of relationships, including both the good parts and the bad parts.

The first part of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" is a piano ballad. This part of the song is about two old friends meeting in an Italian restaurant that they used to go to together. He refers to the restaurant as their "old familiar place". The slow, gentle music goes hand-in-hand with the meaning of the song. The Italian restaurant and the friend that Joel is meeting with is familiar and comforting. It's not a fast paced part of the song because it is about two friends relaxing at dinner, chatting and drinking wine.

The third part of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" is where Knapp's model of relationships really comes into play. This part of the song is known as "The Ballad of Brenda and Eddie". This part of the song has more of a rock and roll sound and is fast paced. The relationship the song is about was a quickly moving relationship, that moved up (and then down) Knapp's model of relationship fast. The "The Ballad of Brenda and Eddie" starts in 1975, with Brenda and Eddie already in the intensifying stage of Knapp's relationships model. At this point they were already "going steady" and everyone at their school knew. They were the prom king and queen and the hit of their local diner.

The other students at school looked up to them because they "never knew [they] could want more than that out of life". They looked at Brenda and Eddie as the perfect couple. Then the song goes into the bonding stage of the model and mentions Brenda and Eddie getting engaged. That is when people started questioning their decision to get married. They were getting married in the summer of 1975 (right after they graduated) and they clearly were not ready to get married. “Everyone said they were crazy" but Brenda and Eddie ignored them and got married anyway. Brenda and Eddie moved into an apartment and used their savings to get it ready, but then they "started to fight when the money got tight" and the relationship began to move down Knapp's model. They are now in the differentiating stage as they begin to argue.

The next part of the song said “They lived for a while in a very nice style but it's always the same in the end". This implies that they were in the stagnating part of their relationship: things were going wrong but they were still going through the motions. However, they then terminated the relationship and got a divorce. They realized that they weren't meant to be married, but they "parted the closest of friends."

The final part of “The Ballad of Brenda and Eddie" get back together. They started back at the initiation stage, but they knew that they couldn't just go back to the relationship they once had, and "the best they could do was pick up the pieces" and return to the experimentation stage. They then made it work again. Joel then says that that's all he could tell us about the relationship because that's the last he heard about Brenda and Eddie.

Part of the reason I love "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" and more specifically, "The Ballad of Brenda and Eddie" is that it describes a couple that isn't perfect. In the beginning of their relationship they were going steady and everyone thought they were the perfect couple. However, once they decided to get married everyone started to have their doubts, but Brenda and Eddie didn't care. Once they got married, the relationship then starts its downfall, where we see that they were too young to get married.

Even though they were still in love, a marriage just wasn't right for them yet. Then the couple used their love to try things again and work on their relationship. I love that the song doesn't just display the positive aspects of are relationship or just the negative aspects. It shows the full relationship model as Brenda and Eddie climbed up the relationship model, then fell down, but then went back up. Not every relationship works, but sometimes if you love each other enough it's worth trying again and working together to fight for your relationship.

A Descriptive Review of a Mexican Restaurant

Every day we are faced with a variety of decisions to make. Of these many decisions, food choice is a priority. Based on specific criteria, we decide where and what to eat, and then we evaluate our experience. I recently went to dinner at a Mexican restaurant called Puerto Vallarta for the first time, and based on practical, aesthetic, and ethical criteria, my experience was indeed a good one that I would recommend to others.

Over the weekend, my friends and I decided to go out to dinner. I had never been to Puerto Vallarta before, but I love Mexican food so I was willing to try it. The outside of the restaurant was sort of shabby looking, but as soon as I walked through the door, I was immersed into the Mexican theme. Bright, colorful decorations were all around, while salsa music filled the air. Piñatas hung from the ceiling and sombreros sat in corners. Delicious smells floated through the air. We were greeted by a festive Spanish speaking gentleman, who also very much looked the part. A first judgment usually comes from appearance, and Puerto Vallarta made a good one. I had come for Mexican food, and I was getting the whole experience. The evaluations I had made so far were based on the beauty and tradition that I had observed and also expected from a Mexican restaurant.

As the gentleman led us to our seats, I got to see the delicious looking food on surrounding tables. As we sat down, we were given our menus, as the waiter took our drink order. He was extremely friendly and also told us about the specials. He was back within two minutes with our drinks and a big bowel of tortilla chips and salsa. I could tell that the service was going to be good, which is extremely important in a food industry. The chips were warm and perfectly crunchy. The salsa was a little spicy, but perfect for taste buds craving that kind of flavor. The menu held a wide variety of options. It held so many different meal choices; it was hard to decide what to order. Most of the meals had Spanish names, which even further added to the culture theme of the restaurant. The menu also held many pictures, which was extremely helpful when the name was confusing. It was nice to see what the meal was going to look like before I made the decision to order it. The pictures really assisted in the decision making, which is even better for people like me who have a hard time making decisions. Within the first ten minutes of being in the restaurant, I had experienced kind, attentive, and efficient employees, a full and detailed menu, and a delicious appetizer. Because of these things, my dinner experience was off to a great start.

I finally decided to order "arroz con pollo," which is chicken and rice. The waiter kept coming back until we were ready to order, which is good to do in food service. Fairly quickly after we had placed our order, our waiter was back with hot and delicious smelling plates of food. Everything was exactly how we had ordered it, and it was all cooked perfectly. Each bite burst with delicious flavor. Overall, great Mexican food with decent prices. Both the taste and price of food are probably two of the most important characteristics in choosing where and what to eat. Puerto Vallarta was a good choice considering affordability, efficiency, and practicality of the meal. Since the prices were decent, the food was quick, and it satisfied our craving for Mexican food. The food was traditionally Mexican, the service was better than expected, and the food was well cooked and had a nice appearance.

Overall, I had an excellent experience with Puerto Vallarta and recommend it to others, I must pay mind to possible opposing viewpoints of the restaurant. The first negative would be the shabby outside appearance of the restaurant, but it definitely makes up for it on the inside, which is where the time is spent anyway. Another negative would be the confusing Spanish naming on the menu, but the pictures do help to counter the possible confusion. One more negative would be the confusion with the accents of the Spanish speaking waiters, but it adds to the overall experience. It is obvious that the negatives are outweighed by the positives, and do not present a strong enough claim to not eat at Puerto Vallarta.

In conclusion, Puerto Vallarta provides delicious food, a fun environment, quick service, and friendly staff, all at a reasonable price. The experience proved to be a good one based on practical, aesthetic, and ethical criteria. Dinner at Puerto Vallarta is affordable, efficient, andpractical. The food is traditional Mexican, and the service is exquisite. The staff is friendly with great work ethic. All of the factors calls for positive evaluations, leading me to conclude that my experience was a good one that should definitely be recommended to others.

The Need for Governments to Implement Policies Preventing Food Wastage by Supermarkets, Restaurants, Factories, and Warehouses

There must be a push for governments to further implement policies preventing food wastage. Supermarkets, restaurants, factories, and warehouses often throw out edible food. So we must bar the aforementioned places from throwing edible foods before their expiration date. Along with this, must be the prevention of farmers, market employees, and any other person involved in transporting food from the producer to the consumer by eliminating any foods for their unappealing shape. The mentioned institutions may also not deliberately spoil quality so that it may be thrown away, therefore preventing it from being eaten by the poor. Any excess food not needed by the institution, or those unlikely to be sold are to be donated to local or international charities, as well as other food banks instead. Retailers and suppliers that defy these policies repeatedly, will be shut down after multiple government-levied fines.

There are other alternatives for the public to use instead of expensive supermarkets. There is a heavy stigma on dumpster diving, a method where people look through bins that can actually contain clean meals that can be salvaged without spending anything. However, many corporations deliberately seal trash bins. Smallscale local markets or farms are also locations where the general public can save a significant sum of money, while obtaining healthier produce at the same time. Lastly, after-hours where employees will be throwing away edible food can be salvaged by those who visit the business after it has closed.

To increase consumer awareness, campaigns must be implemented to educate consumers on means to avoid food wastage, and the consequences of food wastage. Further involving the masses, is for governments to conduct a census on food distribution and wastage within their respective nations. The census will be aimed toward the identification of food wastage in individual locations, as well areas with insufficient or excess food.

As a solution, is the recommendation of the formation of integrated regional markets. This enables food to move from surplus to deficit areas, therefore increasing food availability and decreasing price volatility. The collection of excess food from certain food institutions will be directed to areas in need via cooperation and coordination with the assistance of the government. Nations who register high volumes of food wastage should redirect a percentage of food proportional to the amount of wastage. This however, can only be achieved to nations or regions with a deficit in food supplies, via mutual trade agreed by both parties.

A Marketing Plan on the Rationale for Cora Restaurant in Durham Region, Brooklin

Marketing is a process of planning and strategy execution to deliver goods and services to the customers. The essential components of any marketing strategy are always the four Ps that consist of the product, price, place and promotion (Markgraf, Bert n.p). These tools ae a set of a social enterprise for a business to achieve its marketing objectives in a given market. Marketing is paramount for it embraces almost every facet of the social enterprise. Production strategies always respond to what the market research reveals concerning market preferences, quality, and packaging that eventually determine the price of that particular good. Market research is also useful for it aids in product development based on the customer's needs and it also finds out the technological requirements to reach new customers (Ylimäki 998). In this paper, we develop a marketing plan that will concentrate more on the rationale for Cora restaurant to be opened at Durham Region, Brooklin. The rationale behind our plan focuses on the following features:

Consumer

Behavior Customer involvement is a paramount factor in ensuring that Cora restaurant services in Brooklin are known. Our marketing strategy is based on identifying our customers and i nvolving them in selecting the chain of products and services to be offered in the restaurant (Sahney 3). We aim to target every individual both kids and adults in our business. This is a good way of establishing business relation. The earlier the better. High customer involvement model is sufficient for our restaurant considering that many of them in Brooklin offering the same services. This will include the use of main utilization of the central route which will see to it that a customer is persuaded to try out our services in Cora restaurant. We have to create a positive attitude in them towards our services in the restaurant to convince them to try out our services.
Peripheral cues will be applicable when scores of customers are involved in future. Our involvement is to ensure that we ignite sufficient motivation to our customers, ability, and opportunity. This gives them a chance to try out our services, evaluate them and give us feedback ("Level Of Consumer Involvement" n.p). We shall encourage the high level of involvement among our customers by providing accessible information about the nature of our services. They will also be accessible to the prizes, available offers, and benefits of being loyal customers (Markgraf, Bert n.p). High involvement of customers ensures availability of a different variety of cuisines, hence ensuring customer loyalty.

Customer influences

The three most important influences of our business are situation, emotional appeal and features for our products (Mack, Stan n.p). Providing vegetables to our customers at Cora customers as an extra service for their lunch and supper is a value addition. The logic behind this is that, it adds value to our services for a many of customers like their meals with additional amounts of vegetables. Advertisements will trigger emotion among our clients, for it emphasizes the importance of eating healthy foods towards the achievement of healthy living. This changes their attitudes towards their food choices. Cora is known for providing healthy meals and we will continue keeping it that. The reason behind it, is that our customers will always find reason to visit our restaurant to try out our foods. Still, a majority of customers seek to be healthy and satisfied (Mack, Stan, n.p). Adding a significant future to our product for instance extra vegetable or fruit salad for every serving of chicken dishes improves customer turn outs. We assume that this tactic will attract customers who like to take their meals with an extra amount of vegetable or fruit salad. Advertising is the most important influence on our target customers because; this is because it enables us to reach out many customers, and it addresses our current situation and appeal of our restaurant. It features our services based on the situation and also the extra servings of fruit and vegetable salad so as to appeal the target customers. This ensures that we retain our customers and attract new ones (Sahney, 5). Advertising features ensure that the right message arrives at the customer at the correct time and situation ("Level Of Consumer Involvement" n.p). It also highlights lunch offers for kids during weekends. The reasons for doing this is to create wide popularity among different customers.

Description of product

Our restaurant plans to offer hospitality services to its customers. It focuses on the provision of food and drink for breakfast lunch and supper. The food will include different types of cuisines considering that Brooklin is a multicultural society. The drinks to be served will mainly be composed of natural fruit juices and a variety of beverages such as coffee and tea. It will also provide vegetable and fruit salads, and ice cream to its customers. We will also provide take-away services and outside catering services to our customers, where necessary. We shall also ensure that our meals are fresh, and made according to customer's specifications. We stick to the food items that are served in other Cora chains, to ensure that we maintain its value and popularity among the customers. The rationale behind is that, when we change the menu that is known to be provided by Cora, we jeopardize our reputation.

Price

Prices vary depending on the preparation techniques, ingredients used and the nature of food being prepared. Since our customers come from different cultural backgrounds and social classes, they will have different preferences for their meals and each will have a different price (Freng Svendsen, Mons et al. n.p). it is important to ensure customer satisfaction, and loyalty at the same time. Standards are to be set for ordinary meals, vegetable and fruit salads, beverages, and fruit juices while flexible prices are to be set for different types of cuisines. This is done to ensure that we retain our customers and at the same time meet their needs.

Marketing communication

Marketing of our restaurant is to be done through social and visual, audio and print media (Ylimäki 998). This is because many potential customers are accessed to these modes of communication. We plan to utilize a billboard located at the heart of the town. This is because it is visible to anyone who plans to dine with a different experience. Creation of an advert for television and Youtube. This is based on the fact that people value physical and emotional appeal. We shall create a website for our restaurant and use tags so that it can be accessed online without one having to go to the website pages. This is mainly because websites are reputable source of information for a given place, for example Cora Restaurant. We shall create audio adverts that bring out the nature and quality of our services. Print media will describe our location, prices for different cuisines, and the available offers. This ensures that we are widely known, and we can be easily tracked.

Distribution strategy and the rationale for the chosen location. Our restaurant will be located in the heart of Brookline. The rationale for identifying this place is that: first, will be easily accessible to people working in various institutions and offices within the town (Freng Svendsen, Mons et al. n.p). Second, our catchment will also be high considering that majority of the people who access the town must always pass through the central business district. Third, competition with other restaurants will be low considering that majority of the restaurants are located away from the central business district. This is driven by the notion that most of the restaurants in the central business district are expensive for a majority of the people.

In conclusion, our restaurant aims to provide better services for its customers. This will be achieved by identifying the client's behavior and various influences such as the situation, advertising and appeal for our products and services. Identification of our customer preferences through intensive research and information guidance will ensure that we select the best product, price and the distribution point for our customers. These factors will guide the development of a strategic plan that will see that Cora Restaurant in Brooklin becomes a reality.

An Assessment of Sky Lux, a Restaurant in Santa Monica

There is always much to see in the expanses of Santa Monica, as it is extremely cosmopolitan. Culture is evident from various aspects, which one cannot miss to see as well as experience. It is always thriving with people all trying to enjoy their lives. Some of the interesting scenery, which can be found include; street performers, malls, among many other scenes. The various restaurants are centrally located whereby; patrons have a wide selection to choose from. One such restaurant is the 'Sky lux' which brings about a lot of attention. It is located in a huge building and has incorporated some of the latest designs in architecture. It has an angelic white color, which in a way, reflects that more is awaiting. Also, it has large windows, which are on almost all sides, except for the back area.

Upon entering, one is welcomed by a valet driver, whose friendliness is extremely over whelming. The valet drivers are dressed in blue well pressed uniforms, which are in contrast to the purple uniforms, of the waiting staff inside the restaurant. The valet drivers seemed well trained from how they relate with customers. They are polite and helpful and this is encouraging to new customers to the restaurant. The cars, which arrive at the restaurant, are expensive as they include models such as Rolls Royce, Lamborghinis and the list being endless. It seems that the powerful as well as rich are the main clientele at this restaurant. Once the cars have been driven away, the customers are politely and slowly ushered into the restaurant. It is extremely interesting to note that the reservations agent knows most customers by name. It is often pleasing for customers when they are easily remembered and make an impact to the restaurant.

Confidence is displayed by the people entering the restaurant, but no one seems to notice. A young woman probably around twenty years is in charge of making reservations. She is smartly dressed; her nails French manicured, as well as her blond hair neatly tied. One could easily mistake her for being the restaurant's manager. This is because of her poise as well as her good mannerisms.

The ambience is extremely warm, inviting, and one feels that they need to indulge in the food as soon as they order. Mellow jazz music flows freely. Most people in the restaurant often comment on the music, as it is one of the restaurants main attractions. The diners at the restaurant are mature and thus the reason why they appreciate the music. Meanwhile, the aroma that fills the restaurant is extremely tickling to the diners taste buds. The air is filled with an aroma, which is spicy, due to the continental and authentic dishes being prepared. The diners are engaged in discussion in low tones, so as not to affect the others. They seem to display dining etiquette, which is often acquired, due to their lifestyles. It is surprising that in a period of less than three hours, two Hollywood celebrities have arrived at the restaurant. An unruly guest is the only one disturbing the existing tranquility as he seems to have drunk a lot of Don Perignon champagne. A young brunette waiter effectively tries and solves the situation. The matter is handled professionally as the drunken patron is ushered out politely. One of the valet drivers is to take him home after they have confirmed his address. Everything in this restaurant is being done professionally, thus the reason why they have repeat customers.

Money was not an issue in coming up with the restaurants décor as most of the furnishings are modern. The tables and chairs are arranged all facing the large window's. This is for the diner's to have an excellent view of what is taking place outside. Often, celebrities request that they are seated at the corner where they can enjoy their meals without having the paparazzi stalking them. The waiting staffs are six and each has been allocated their own tables, so that they do not interfere with each other's work. The waiters are young and passionate about their jobs and this is from the manner, which they work. Often they are tipped as much as 100 dollars and the excitement experienced by them, is extremely over whelming. There are different races of people who come to this restaurant in Santa Monica, which is famous. A diner seems to be from Africa as he is dressed in one of the national clothes of Nigeria. Also, his accent is not like that of an American. Cultural integration is important as the menu has national dishes from almost every country. Customers have a selection, which is wide, and the waiters are effective as they make it easy for the diners when ordering. They explain the various dishes in a unique manner, not witnessed in many restaurants.

As the food is being served, the aroma feels the entire restaurant and twice the chef came to see the customers experience. He was received with a lot of enthusiasm and the clapping from the happy diners, made him embarrassed. On that day, the special was couscous and Moroccan lamb served with rice. Most of the diners ordered the special and from their expressions were extremely delighted with their experience. Occasionally, one could hear comments, such as how the meal was sumptuous as well as finger licking. Everyone who left was extremely satisfied and was sure to come back soon. It seemed that the diners had worn the most elegant designer gowns. One of the most memorable designs was that of a young man who had pink Versace suit and blue Jimmy Choo shoes. Only a person who loves fashion would have known that what he had worn what was in current season. To other diners, he looked like a clown with no sense of fashion.

The talk among the diners is about their achievements and successes; it seems that everyone wants to outdo the other. No one is happy about the success of other and envy seems to be in almost everyone's heart. The diners do not pay using cash, but instead prefer the use of credit cards. Occasionally you can notice how the waiters talk in low tones concerning the amount spent on drinks and food. It can be interpreted by their reactions that the diners are wasting money, which would have been used in other ways. Unfortunately nothing can be done concerning this issue. Food is not the main reason why people dine in this restaurants as from the different experiences witnessed. A lot can be observed in this restaurant and the experience is extremely memorable.

The Ocala National Forest with Endangered Species

“The Ocala National Forest is the oldest national forest east of the Mississippi River. The forest contains the largest concentration of sand pine in the world as well as some of the best remaining stands of longleaf pine in central Florida.” (Ocala Wildlife Management Area, 2018) It spans nearly 400,000 acres and contains several hundred lakes including Salt Springs, Silver Glen Springs, Alexander Springs, and Juniper Springs. The forest is home to black bears, white-tailed deer, bald eagles, wild turkeys, scrub jays, red cockaded woodpeckers, eastern indigo snakes, gopher tortoises, and of course, alligators.

The Big Scrub “The Ocala National Forest was comprised mostly of sand pine scrub. This unique ecosystem, referred to as the Big Scrub, is what is left of a chain of islands before the sea retreated 25 million years ago.” (Ocala National Forest, 2018) Since the sea retreated, instead of water, these “islands” are surrounded by other forest types such as pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and bayheads.  70% of the Ocala National Forest is Sand pine scrub ecosystem.

The Big Scrub is depe Gopher tortoisendent on the disturbance of fire to survive, this is because the pinecone seeds do not open unless under high heat. The Use of Prescribed Burns “Prescribed burns are an important tool for maintaining habitats in the Ocala National Forest.” (Ocala National Forest, 2018) Burning the forest on a regular schedule has a number of benefits.  reduces the threat of wildfires  removes dense understory build-up  improves wildlife habitat  necessary for regeneration of certain plant species  Timber Harvesting  “In the Organic Act of 1897, Multiple-Use Sustained-Yield Act of 1960, and National Forest Management Act of 1976, Congress directed that one of the purposes of National Forests should be managing the ecosystem. This includes timber harvesting and removing merchantable trees for vegetative management.” (Ocala National Forest, 2018)  The primary timber harvested in the Ocala National Forest is the very common sand pine. Management of Timber Harvesting  Due to the way that the pine’s seeds are opened due to extreme heat, the park has decided on a management technique involving clear cut, then a prescribed burn, followed up by seeding. This simulates the natural effects of wildfire.  “The Forest Service requires much time and planning, using the latest scientific knowledge, to go into the preparation of a timber sale. It may take years to complete the harvest, from start to finish.” (Ocala National Forest, 2018)

A portion of the profits from the sales of timber are given to the county the timber was harvested from. Those funds go strictly towards construction and maintenance of roadways and schools. The rest of the profits are deposited into the National Treasury.  Call for Protection from “Lawless” Logging  An objection to logging practices permitted by the park was made by a journalist who grew up in the area, Jenifer Collins. She spent her childhood fishing, kayaking, and camping in the park.  In an article she wrote that was published on October 31, 2014, she claims that even if harvested by law, the logging practices in the park could be devastating to the ecosystem. She cited S. 1966, the “National Forests Job and Management Act of 2014,” sponsored by Senator John Barrasso (R-WY). It says that of the areas within the park deemed “logging emphasis areas”, 25% need to be going through the harvest process at all times. “This amount of logging would result in the loss of at least 7.5 million acres over a 15-year period (a near tripling of current logging levels), as well as devastate all the vital benefits these lands provide, such as clean drinking water, fish and wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities like hunting, fishing, hiking and camping. ” (Collins, 2014)

 Permitted Harvesting

“Within the Ocala National Forest, only limited products are permitted to be harvested. The Forest Service collects fees for the issuing of permits to harvest these natural resources.” (Ocala National Forest, 2018) These are the forest products available with a permit for private or commercial harvesting:

  •  Christmas Trees
  •  Deer Moss
  •  Turkey Oak tips
  •  Crooked wood or Dragon wood
  •  Palmetto fronds
  •  Dead and Down
  •  Lightered Wood
  •  Firewood
  •  Restrictions on Harvesting

Firewood may be harvested only in designated areas that have been evaluated for their relative abundance and impact on wildlife. Crooked wood (lyonia ferruginea) and deer moss may only be harvested from areas scheduled for regeneration.

 Management of Plant Life

“As the world's largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest, the Ocala National Forest is home to rare and endangered plant species, including some found nowhere else on earth. Our management plan for the forest includes special caretaking of these species.” (Ocala National Forest)

Plant life protected by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the PETS listing system. PETS is an acronym for Proposed, Endangered, and Threatened Species.

Plants within the Ocala National Forest that are protected are as follows:

  •  Florida Bonamia (threatened)
  • Scrub Buckwheat (threatened)
  •  Lewton’s Milkwort (endangered)
  •  “Specific management practices favoring recovery of these and related scrub species include harvesting sand pine in the scrub ecosystem to provide disturbance at a scale similar to that experienced through natural, periodic, catastrophic fire.” (Ocala National Forest)
  •  Florida Bonamia
  • While Florida bonamia is currently listed as threatened, the Fish and Wildlife Service claims it has a healthy population within the Big Scrub ecosystem.
  •  Scientific name is Bonamia grandiflora
  •  Also referred to as Florida lady's nightcap and scrub morning glory
  • Scrub Buckwheat
  •  Listed as threatened

  •  Listed as endangered
  • Occurs in the straddle of the scrub and high pineland habitats
  • Scientific name is Polygala lewtonii
  •  Also referred to as Lewton’s polygala
  • Management of Animal Life
  •  A number of federally protected animal species call Ocala National Forest home. Those species are as follows:
  •  Florida Scrub-jay (threatened)
  •  Sand skink (threatened)
  •  Eastern indigo snake (threatened)
  •  Red-cockaded Woodpecker (endangered)
  • Gopher Tortoise (proposed)

  • Gopher Tortoise
  •  Listed as proposed
  •  Scientific name is Gopherus polyphemus
  •  Striped Newt
  •  Listed as proposed
  •  Scientific name is Notophthalmus perstriatus
  • Hunting Management
  •  Hunting is allowed within the Ocala National Forest to promote healthy populations and prevent over populating of certain species.
  • General bag limits unless otherwise specified are as follows:
  •  Deer - Daily limit 1 antlered deer per person, no season limit, possession limit 4.
  •  Wild hog - No size or bag limit.
  •  Turkey - During the archery season, daily limit 1, season limit 2, possession limit 2. During the youth turkey hunt, 1 gobbler or bearded turkey per quota permit. During the spring turkey season, 2 gobbler or bearded turkey per quota permit, but only 1 per person.
  •  Gray squirrel and rabbit - Daily limit 12 per person, possession limit 24 for each.
  •  Quail – Daily limit 12, possession limit 24.
  •  Raccoon, opossum, armadillo, beaver, coyote, skunk and nutria - No bag limits.
  • Bobcat and otter - Possession limit 1 unless in possession of a trapping license.

 Watershed Management

“For protecting water quality and soil productivity, the National Forests in Florida uses as a baseline the silviculture Best Management Practices, developed under the auspices of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The Forest Service adds further restrictions on activities to protect water and soil or to enhance wildlife habitat. These restrictions apply to all activities. Site-specific conditions of every project are assessed, and appropriate restrictions are employed to protect resources and meet State and Federal water quality standards.” (Ocala National Forest, 2018)

Project: Search for Methods of Preservation of the Endangered Species of Masked Bobwhite

1. Describe the issue and clearly state the problem or challenge

We are seeking a method for the reintroduction of the masked bobwhite in such a way that would cause the species to recover from near extinction. Since the species may be functionally extinct from the Southwest United States (Brown and Clark, 2017) we will be challenged with the monumental task of determining what factors play a role in the survival of this species. The stakeholders for this project range from those that will benefit from the aesthetics of the species to hunters. Another important stakeholder is land managers and ranchers who may be impacted be reintroduction efforts.

2. Assessment driver(s)

The main driver of this reintroduction project is the preservation of a nearly extinct species. Additionally, the regulation requiring the setting aside of critical habitat of an endangered species is further driving this project. (United States, 1983)

3. Geographic context and scale

We propose that since the past attempts at reintroduction on a large scale have been relatively unsuccessful, we will limit our reintroduction to just the Buenos Aires wildlife refuge. After a period, if our management plan for the reintroduction of the masked bobwhite is successful, we will then develop a new plan to take a portion of the successful population and reintroduce them into new areas deemed suitable for such a project.

4. Environmental context

The proposed reintroduction site is the Buenos Aires Wildlife refuge. This refuge found in Pima County, AZ (fig 1.) and covers 117,464 acres (fig 2.) With the mix of dense grasses and shrubs found on this site it is an ideal habitat for masked bobwhite habitat. The masked bobwhite tends to like edge habitat that has 75-100% ground cover with high plant diversity. (Goodwin and Hungerford, 1977) The land cover at this refuge is primarily semi-desert (fig 3.) but also contains grass land and shrubland with a few small bodies of water that vary in size and cover depending on the season and precipitation.

5. Land use issues

There are a few main issues which must be considered as we undertake this reintroduction project. First, are the past failed attempts at reintroduction to produce a sustainable population of masked bobwhites. These attempts may be influencing the amount of support for this type of project that we receive from stakeholders. While the Buenos Aires Wildlife refuge is a non-grazing site there are stakeholders that would wish to see that change. Second, a possible issue that could arise is the misidentification by hunters of masked bobwhites as other species of game bird. This may not be an issue now as the likelihood of a masked bobwhite sighting is low, however once a new reintroduction occurs this may become more likely to occur.

6. Justification

The overall justification for this project is that we do not lose another species to extinction if it can be avoided. In the short-term it means bringing a species back from the brink of extinction. Whereas in the long-term, if the reintroduction proves successful there may be future hunting opportunities as well as the ability of cattle farmers to expand grazing once the population becomes established.

A Comparison of Advantages and Disadvantages of Opening a Sole Proprietorship to Open a Restaurant

When people decide that they want to open up a restaurant or something similar, there are a lot of important decisions that they need to make. One of the most important decisions that need to make is whether they want to open up a franchise restaurant or a sole proprietorship and make their own restaurant. There are a lot of contributing factors that determine which would be the best option because they both have advantages and disadvantages, however, for most people, a franchise is probably the best option. A large benefit of the sole proprietorship is that you get to keep all of the profits, however with a franchise, you have to pay the company a percentage of your sales. You also have to pay to be able to open one of their stores, which can cost a lot. The company can also restrict who you buy your products from. The average cost of opening of mcdonald's is around 1.3 million dollars. The cost of opening your own restaurant would be much cheaper, however in most cases, it is worth it to open a franchise. Opening a franchise gives your business a name that a lot of people will recognize and you will get a lot of business from that alone. Not a lot of advertising will be required for a franchise.

Another downside to a franchise though is that they usually only last a certain period of time, which is agreed to in the contract when someone decides to open one. A sole proprietorship is better though in cases like specialty food or for a high end restaurant. Specialty restaurants like Japanese or Mexican restaurants tend to do much better with a sole proprietorship because the franchise restaurants for any type of foreign food are usually not considered authentic or good.

Another benefit of a sole proprietorship is that the owner gets to keep all of the profits and doesn't have to give some to the company that owns the brand, like a franchise restaurant has to. Due to the fact that the name of the restaurant won't be known right away though, business will be slow in the beginning because most people will be unfamiliar with it and will prefer to go somewhere that they know the food will be good, rather than take a chance at your restaurant. Much more advertising is needed for these types of businesses to be successful than it is for franchises. This also limits the size that your business could be. Overall, the answer for most people that want to open a restaurant would be to open a franchise, but for some a sole proprietorship will be the way to go.

Bees as an Endangered Species of Insects

Do you crave chocolate? Honey? What about the sweet smell of flowers? Well, they might be gone if the bees go extinct. These important insects just might. 7 species of them are on the endangered list. Not only will flowers be vanished, but the organisms that eat them. The food chain would be a disaster. And this is just the start. A world without bees could mean a struggle to sustain the human population. Supermarkets would have to half the amount of fruits and vegetables. And It gets worse. We are losing these precious species at an alarming rate:30% each year. Important Beesness For the last few years, I’ve heard of the decline of bees. I never knew why. Surprisingly, it’s really because of global warming. It’s getting hotter each year, which has restricted the area in which bees can survive. Many species have struggled to adapt to their changing environment. Not only that, but pesticides and harmful chemical-treated plants are also hurting the bees. Such as corn, it releases pollen into the air and makes its way to other plants, where bees are exposed. An external parasite called Varroa mite infests the bee colonies and sucks the blood from the adults. This causes a short life for the pollinators. 2 Varroa MitesBlood that emerges from the bees may be deformed with missing legs or wings. It’s a real horror show.

A Positive StingYou may not like bees for their painful sting, their annoying buzz, and if you are unlucky enough to be allergic, they are a lethal threat. But people need to work fast to save them. If all species of bees went extinct, plants couldn’t be pollinated. The herbivores that eat the plants, gone. Carnivores would perish because of little food supply, and then decomposers would have very little to decompose. I asked many of my friends if they liked chocolate or honey, and they nodded their heads with their mouths drooling. I broke the news. They seemed devastated. I laughed as they scrambled to figure out how to save them, which led me to write this next section.

Lend A Helping HandOne thing you can do to save bees is plant bee-friendly flowers in your garden or yard (No chemicals!). Also, you may not know this one, but bees get thirsty. You can put a small basin of fresh water outside your home, and wait for the dehydrated suckers to come. Do whatever you can to make the climate cooler! Cut down on fossil fuels. They will appreciate it! One more thing: share your solutions with your community. Spread the word! A farmer sprays pesticide on their plantsFactoring In The FactsAfter much research, I found out that bees probably won’t go extinct, with over 20,000 thriving species. But in general, the type of bees that are going extinct is very important for humans.Crazy, right? Albert Einstein once said, “If bees went extinct, then us humans would be too after 4 years.” Many beekeepers and farmers don’t agree with that. Some say that bees pollinate ? their crops. But others, ?. Let’s say the 7 species of bees on the endangered list do go extinct, we would still be in trouble. Our diets would change dramatically. Honey bees (Yeah, they are on the endangered list, too.) are responsible for $30 billion a year in crops. Take. This. Seriously.

Salt Warning Label should be Added on Restaurant Menus

New York City has recently added warning labels for salt intake to many chain food restaurants. This was done by food regulators in hopes to educate people on what they are eating. However, the restaurants are planning to sue claiming that these regulations are overstepping legal bounds because these rules have not yet been mandated. Several of these chains had to place salt-shaker icons on menu items that were over the recommended daily limit, which is precisely 2,300 milligrams of sodium. This equivalents to about a teaspoon of salt a day. These warnings would generally be placed on fatty foods such as burgers and pizza. These warnings appear beneficial to me. I think by doing this, America could fight the alarming number of obese persons. Having these labels could make consumers more aware, since many of us do not know what we are actually eating. Although fast food is quite convenient, it's really unhealthy for you.

A copy of the suit revealed the following: "Ironically, this regulation will confuse and mislead consumers into potentially making less healthy food choices through the law's spotty, inconsistent application and inaccurate scientific distortions," Since these companies generally sell very few healthy options, they are dependent on sales of what they do sell. By adding these labels, customers will be forced to know what they are in taking. The association also claims that: "the health board overstepped its legal bounds and is muddying waters at a time when federal regulators are working on nationwide menu labeling rules. The suit also brands the salt warning "nonsensical" in applying to only some food vendors and argues it violates restaurateurs' free speech rights by forcing them to post a warning they dispute as based on "scientifically controversial opinion."

In my opinion these labels aren't taking away any rights from restaurants. All companies already must include these details about food. Although they are not found directly at the restaurant rather online, this information is needed. One reason for this is due to the fact that many people have food allergies. So company's need to have this information available to them. Many people do not think about what they are putting into their bodies. Within this article it claimed that a cheeseburger can generally have about 4,000mg of salt and even a salad can have about 3,000mg of salt. Who would ever imagine something as healthy as a salad having this much salt within it. Having a high-intake of salt can result in several health issues including: high blood pressure, obesity, and other health issues as well. One should really consider their health before ordering these types of "food".
New York has faced issues related to healthy eating measure before, so this is nothing new to them. The court results have been about even. Critically thinking, I feel that these chain companies will not be successful in this law suit. These guidelines are to help consumers not harm them. These labels will roughly appear on about 10-15% of menu items. Which is not a large number at all surprisingly. That is however, if these laws are strictly enforced and the lawsuit is won by the health department. Some companies are in favor of this new law. Companies such as Panera and Applebee's have been large supporters of this.

A Review of the Pirates’ House and the History of the Restaurant

House is a notable eatery and bar built up in 1753. It's situated is Savannah, Georgia. It is believed that Pirates' House is the oldest building standing in Georgia. This restaurant stands out as one of the major tourist attractions in Georgia. This comprehensive narrative reviews the restaurant as a business as well as a historic entry together with the activities that were undertaken in the restaurant since it was established.

Criteria 1

House was based on a plot of land that had been set aside to be a botanical research garden. The garden was assigned to Oglethorpe's Trustees. Oglethorpe selected botanists from around the globe to procure plants for the venture, such plants include, cotton, therapeutic herbs, indigo and flavors. The garden was put up with the hope of boosting the wine and silk industries that were mushrooming by then, the garden later centered its operations to growing mulberry trees. The soil and climate states in however did not favor the mulberry trees. The wine and silk industries also crumbled as a result of those factors. The garden would later develop cotton farming that quickly became the staple for the residents of Georgia.

The small building had therefore been built to house the gardeners who worked in the farm. The house was formerly known as the herb house due to its old age. By 1754, Savannah was rapidly growing as a port town thus the residents decided that it was no longer relevant to have a botanical garden. The herb house was therefore transformed to serve as a tavern and an inn where visiting seamen from abroad would be housed[ CITATION Fra15 \ 1033 ]. The pirate's house started to constantly house seamen and pirates and with time, it started to earn a bad reputation and the general public started to avoid it. The pirate's house did not earn its status by rumor; many sailors had been reported missing from this restaurant. Duisburg captains who needed slave men frequented the inn and took away vulnerable drunkards. The restaurant was initially owned by captain Flint.

The savannah gas company would later buy Pirates house and the neighboring land in the 1900s. Mrs. Hansell Hilyer who was the wife to the president of Savannah Gas Company was attracted to the design of the building in the premises they had bought. She rehabilitated the museum house into a restaurant with 15 dining rooms with a capacity of 120 guests. It started operations and served several varieties of southern dishes. Frances McGrath's book "The Pirate's House Cook Book" lists the recipes that the restaurant offered.

Criteria 2

The pirate's house is a notable restaurant most significantly because of the stories that it is founded on. The restaurant holds an annual competition known as the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia's where they different entries showcase their innovative recipes and at the same time have a time to celebrate the history of the restaurant.

The restaurant has earned several good reviews for their delicious food and their exclusive service and theme. The residents of historic Georgia view it as a source of their pride and it relatively sees a consistent flow of tourists who come to share the experience and learn the history. The pirate's house has been used in a handful of contexts which includes Robert Stevenson's book "Treasure Island" which was written in 1881. It is believed that the novelist was inspired by the house and the activities that were happening in the house. Some pages of the novel where the action was from the restaurant are displayed in one of the rooms in the restaurant.

The pirate's house serves several people each with a different goal. May people travel from far destinations to have an exclusive service in a restaurant that is believed to be haunted by the souls of the initial owners and those of the sailors that died in the restaurant in the 17s and 18s. Besides that, people like to see the restaurant for its old design from the 17.

Criteria 3

One of the most fascinating parts of the hotel is the set of ancient staircases that lead into unseen tunnels that are underneath the restaurant. It is believed that the tunnels beneath the restaurant ran to the banks of Savannah River. The strong men drinking at the bar were dragged via the staircases, to the tunnels and drugged. They would then be dragged through the tunnel to a ship and forced to be part of the crew.
The restaurant is a vibrant business that has employed a handful of employees. In the event that the restaurant is closed, several people would lose their jobs and a spring of pride for the Historic Georgia would have dried. People visiting the town often visit the restaurant for delicious foods and interesting ghost stories. Since the 18s, the structure of the restaurant has barely changed. This is most likely because the restaurant needs to preserve the original feel of the house since it was built. Many people who would like to see the building and attribute it to the story behind it will often visit the restaurant and that acts as the restaurant's point of sale.

Conclusion

This restaurant has been a favorite spot for everyone who visits as it was the same case for the privateers and sailors for several years. The food and drinks were as terrific as they still are now. It is no surprise that the pirates would hang around the place that they enjoyed and loved when they were alive, like we do today.
