A Comparison of the Differences between Traditional and Online Classes

Traditional and online classes are great ways to further education. Traditional classes require students to meet in class usually weekly on certain days, and at a certain time. Traditional classes are more convenient for people who have the time on their hand and are able to travel to class. Online classes allow students to be able to turn their homework and other assignments through the Internet at any time or place. Online classes are more convenient for people that have less time on their hand. Many students that take online classes work full time, or have other responsibilities. The difference between traditional and online classes are time schedules, methods of delivery, and communication.

To begin with, the difference between online and traditional classes are the time schedules. Traditional classes general meet in a classroom at a specific location. Students are able to choose their own class schedule, at a specific time morning, evening or night classes, Students meet in their classroom at a scheduled time each week. Traditional class is suitable for students who can conform to a more flexible schedule because they have to have time to be able to travel and attend classes during the week. If a student is late, delayed by the weather, or absent they may miss what went on during class. Online classes can meet where ever a student have excess to the Internet. Students are able to choose their classes at any time during the day or night; twenty four seven. All communication with teachers and students are done through emails, discussion board and telephones. Online classes are more convenient for students that are full time workers or full time parents, because it gives those students more time to be able to balance schoolwork and things at home. Students can log on to their accounts at any time during the day.

Methods of delivery between traditional and online classes are different. Traditional classes are general taught through lectures, group activities, or oral presentations. During traditional classes teachers may lectures for the first part of class, and have class discussions at the other half of class. Classmates are able to come together and do group activities and do presentations through power point on the information taught in class. The class takes place in real time, can be spontaneous, and interactive with generally up to thirty students per classroom. Some tests are take home tests and some tests are to be taken in class. Online classes are taught online through either a desktop, laptop, or even an upgraded cell phone. Teachers post podcasts for students to watch and get their class lecture for that day. Online class students post any questions that they might have on discussion board to discuss with other online classmates. Class takes place whenever the student logs in their account, and they can interact with many different people from around the world. When taking a test for online classes students have to schedule an appointment to take a test; and the test have to be taken on a college campus computer.

Communication with teachers and classmates is different when taking traditional classes and online classes. Students in traditional classes general communicate in person. Students may have a hard time understanding certain things and will be able to communicate with their teacher to get a better understanding right away before, during, or after class. Classmates also are able to work in groups during class hours, and meet up before or after school to work together. Many students understand things better when they are being taught in person and are able to be hands on. When taking online classes students communicate electronically. When students have a hard time understanding something they can send emails to other students or teachers it may take minutes, hours, or even days for a response back. Students online can collaborate online but, they do not always log in to their student accounts on the same day. Understanding material online may require more efforts by the individual student.

In college both traditional and online class are great ways to receive higher level education. Traditional and online classes have major differences. Some of which include time schedules, methods of delivery, and communication. Traditional classes are better for students who needs communication to better there learning. Online classes are better for students who have time-consuming lifestyles. In college both traditional and online classes are great ways to receive higher level education.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Online and Traditional Classes

Taking courses for school online and on campus is completely different. I should know because I have experienced both. When I first graduated from High School enrolled in a four year college, and dropped out of college six semesters later. Years went by and decided to go back to school, though I managed to finish a two year program, being older, married and with children led me to take classes on-line, so I can finally finish a bachelor degree. Some ways that they are different are you can take a class online in the convenience of your own home, as opposed to taking a class in a traditional classroom where you have to drive to get there. You can log in to your class whenever you have the time to and the traditional class you have specific time frames and finally the way courses are taught. Although there are many differences between taking each class, there are also many similarities that appeal to different peoples learning styles.

First I will discuss how convenient is to take an on line class, you can access your classroom twenty hours a day seven days a week. I can enter my on line class whenever I have time. Living a busy lifestyle can be very stressful, so having the peace of mind of accessing my school work whenever possible takes a heavy burden off my shoulders. Gone are the days when I rushed out of my job to find myself stuck in traffic waiting for the traffic to clear a little bit so I can make it to school on time. I also had to worry about being late all the time, not only because points were taken off every time you were late, but because I did not want to miss important information that will help me with the homework later. Traffic was not the only factor for being late, weather was the other factor, related to delays, on cold, snowy nights, not only slows you down, but it is hazardous. Of course in the event of a storm, the class would be cancelled.

Another convenience about online classes is that I do not have to worry about dropping my kids off somewhere so that I can be able to make to class, back when my oldest daughter was seven or eight years old I had to worry about taking her to my cousin's house so I can make it to school. Another reason why it makes so convenient taking an online class is that I do not have to worry about my looks, I can be wearing pajamas pants, I do not have to fix my hair, wear makeup, I can eat, and yell at my toddler at the same time. I can start dinner take a brake and finish it later, I can throw a laundry load into the washing machine, and the possibilities are endless.

Having to drive to school means that, I need to have money to buy gas, so I can get there versus taking online classes. I can save a lot of money because gasoline prices are so high. Today I heard a comment that before the summer is over gas prices are going to be five dollars a gallon, I just wonder what else is coming next; we all know the effects high cost in gasoline, everything else goes up. If I were to calculate at the end of the year how much money I have saved on gas, I would probably have saved enough to take a mini vacation. Not only taking online classes will help me by saving money. But I can feel good about myself for helping our planet. Not driving to school means not polluting the air, which means preventing the ozone layer from getting any bigger.

Now taking a class in a traditional classroom has its advantages, some classes only meet once a week. Unlike online classes, that in order to meet the course expectations. I need to break down my assignments into small pieces so that is not overwhelmingly stressful. In a traditional classroom, you do in class discussions. So that you can interact with the teacher. And other students, if you do not understand something you can ask the instructor right there and then, not so with an online class, I need to e-mail my instructor in order for my question to be answered and then wait for a reply. Another advantage would be that you only have to write a final paper at the end of the semester, unlike an online class you need to write all the time, you have to write your discussions, write essays on topics you have learned throughout the class, you have to comment on things you have read on the discussion board etc. In a traditional you only have to be there for a short period of time, if your class only lasts two hours at the end of it you are free to spend time with your family, or use your spare time conveniently. The spare time you get in a traditional classroom only means it will take longer to finish school, an online class it only takes six weeks, versus a traditional classroom where it can take as long as three months to be finished.

Having discussed the advantages and disadvantages of both online and traditional classes, it is hard to say which one is better, or easier, I think it depends on individual learning styles, some people would probably do better when taking an online class, whereas for other individuals it might be easier to take a class in a traditional setting.

Online Classes Vs. Traditional Classes: what are the Advantages and Disadvantages?

Some adults that enroll to college already have a family, or they may have a job. With such a busy schedule they might find it easier to enroll to an online class rather than attending traditional classes at a school campus. Both classes make every effort to help students obtain a college degree, but differ in some manner. Online classes and traditional classes can differ from flexibility, difficulty, and success rate.

Online classes are more flexible comparing to traditional classes. With online classes it is a personal decision to watch a lecture any time appropriate for an individual as long as it is before an exam. Meaning that if a student wants to go to class at midnight they can, sounds fun can be risky. Better for those that may have a family of their own already will find more comfort in taking online classes. "As an online student, I was able to work full-time and carry a full-time course load without any issues" (Reynolds). Although online classes can be very flexible with time, the difficulty of an online class can be very laborious. "There seems to be a myth among at least some students that online classes are easier than campus classes." (Hartwell). Online classes take a lot of self-motivation cause there will be no administrator looking over the student, especially for the students that struggle with their academics. Most teachers can see when a student is sitting in their class and is struggling without a teacher physically in the same room it may be harder. "Without face-to-face contact, faculties are not able to pick up nonverbal cues from students that can indicate they are disengaged" (Cull). Not having a teacher to look over a student that has no self-motivation can lead to a student to withdrawal or just fail a class. "... online course success rates that were 12 percentage points lower than completion rates for the face-to-face equivalents" (Perez). Having more flexibility and freedom can make a student feel like they have enough time to get their work done which can cause them into failing and withdrawing compared to students that are in traditional classes.

In traditional campus classes there is some flexibility, but not as much as the online classes. College campuses have night classes, but are only open until a certain time. Having to make a schedule that fits with the professor's schedule will take lots of time management,"... managing your time is sure to be more complex because your classes will meet on various days and times..." (Gardner & Jewler 11). Although traditional campuses are less flexible than online classes it is said to be easier in traditional classes. "Students appreciated the convenience of online lectures but preferred in class lectures because of the increased ease of maintaining attention in the more structured environment" (Jensen). People that get distracted easily should be in a traditional in campus class. However, being in traditional classes compared to online classes show a higher percentage in success rate. "Jenkins noted that student success rates in traditional classes (are) 70 to 75 percent, significantly higher than the online course rate" (Kokemuller). With such a higher success rate in traditional classes, majority of students should nor lean towards online classes, unless they can find the motivation and are not struggling academically.

Having a family or working a part time job should not make a student want to take online classes. Some students prefer online classes because they either think it will be easier or simply because they have such a busy life, they feel they will have more time for a flexible schedule. Traditional campus classes can still have some flexible hours as online classes. However, taking online classes will give a student less difficulty with passing their class, because there will be student face-to-face interaction with their professor. As traditional classes statistics show a higher success rate than online classes, more students will be better off with sticking to traditional classes.

However, Bates admits, in a classroom setting, scholars are very organized in the classes that meet on a regular basis. Especially those classes that meet at the same time. Thus, Schon admits that the apprenticeship only, is not the best mechanism of learning. Schon adds, you just cannot learn by doing only, but you have to understand the ambience in which knowledge is applied. We conduct society’s principal business through professionals specially trained to carry out that business, whether it be making war and defending the nation, educating our children, diagnosing and curing disease, judging and punishing those who violate the law, settling disputes, managing industry and business, designing and constructing buildings, helping those who for one reason or another are unable to fend for themselves. Our principal formal institutions— schools, hospitals, government agencies, courts of law, armies— are arenas for the exercise of professional activity” (1983, pg. 3).

For this purpose, the author found that seminars go all the way back to the time of Aristotle, who tutored Alexander the Great, and Socrates, who tutored Plato in Ancient Athens. Furthermore, the author found that, discussions in an online classroom, known as collaborative learning, can happen among the entire class or in a small group. The reality is, despite the best efforts in the course design, some groups will have very low cooperation by some group members and this very low participation which will create low quality outcomes. The article published by the International Review of Research in Open and Distant Learning, produces evidence that most individuals live very busy lives. Especially when it comes to adult learners. Brindley claims that, “Academic work is important but must fit around demands of career, home, and community. Group projects require that learners be present on a particular schedule, reducing the flexibility and convenience factor in online study and possibly causing anxiety and/ or resentment, particularly if the purpose of the group work is not clear and the group experience is not positive”.

For this purpose, Morrison notes that the goal of design, especially instructional design, is to make learning more effective, less difficult and more efficient. Even AT&T offered a course that was nine weeks long and their long line craftsmen were taken away from the job trying to take the classes; so, they sent in an instructional design team and reduced it down to nine days finding that 25 days of the course was irrelevant. The book designing effective instruction, published by John Wiley & Sons, provides very heavy information that the ADDIE model is also passed down by many instructional designers for technology-based teaching. It is a standard that ADDIE helps high quality distance educational programs whether online or print to develop professionally. According to Morrison, “One reason it has been so successful is that it is heavily associated with good quality design, with clear learning objectives, carefully structured content, controlled workloads for faculty and students, integrated media, relevant student activities, and assessment strongly tied to desired learning outcomes. Although these good design principles can be applied with or without the ADDIE model, ADDIE is a model that allows these design principles to be identified and implemented on a systematic and thorough basis. It is also a very useful management tool, allowing for the design and development of large numbers of courses to a standard high quality” (2010, pg. 136).

Bates adds that online learning is not only leading to new models or design of instructing and learning, but it is increasingly influencing both the classroom and campus-based learning. Bates says a good example of this change in learning due to online techniques were when Mr. D.W. Griffith’s “Birth of a Nation” literally changed the design of movies suggesting techniques that were unique to cinema at that time such as panning shots, panoramic of long shots and realistic battle scenes, now called special effects. Teaching in the digital age published by Tony Bates Associates Ltd., acknowledges that teaching online changes the learning environment. One no longer needs to talk about teaching methods, but rather teaching models. In Bates view, “We start with classroom teaching methods that have been moved into a technological format with little change to the overall design principles. I will argue that these are essentially old designs in new bottles” (2015 pg. 130).

Some people believe that just adding technology to the game of learning automatically results in meeting changing needs in education, but Bates says that is not so. Unless the design is altered necessarily taking advantage of the possibility of the new technology, the outcomes will be the same in that substantial classroom model that it is attempting to assume just like putting new wine in an old bottle. Bates maintains, “Education is no exception to the phenomenon of new technologies being used at first merely to reproduce earlier design models before they find their unique potential. However, changes to the basic design model are needed if the demands of a digital age and the full potential of new technology are to be exploited in education” (2015, pg. 133). For this purpose, the author found that Disruptive innovations explains why so many companies are not able to sustain success.

Traditional universities have devoted great assets in competing with other universities sustaining innovations like improved technology in teaching, better classrooms, more faculty investigations and better residence halls and dining facilities. Higher learning, however, has historically accomplished just sustaining innovations. The author claims, “Who are the non-consumers of higher education? Most of them commute, work part-time, have family commitments, and / or do not have the luxury of majoring in a field that has no direct relevance to their future goals” (Weise, 2014, Vol. 49, N0 6). Thus, Bates adds that a MOOC is a massively open online course. People have argued that MOOCS will change the world of education with its disruptive technology. Teaching in a digital age published by Tony Bates associates Ltd., gives solid information that even though there are different kinds of MOOCS, they all have some common features. However, just the mere word MOOC covers a wide range of different designs.In Bates view, “MOOCs can be seen then as either a major revolution in education. Or just another example of the overblown hyperbole often surrounding technology. Particularly in the USA. I shall be arguing that MOOCs are a significant development. But they have severe limitations for developing the knowledge. And skills needed in a digital age” (2015, pg. 179). Furthermore,

Collins found that in 2013 during the spring semester of San Jose State University. 3 MOOC courses were launched, provided by Udacity’s Platform. They attracted 14,000 students and tested the retention. Progress and online support. But only about one-half matriculated. Case study: using MOOCs for traditional university coursework published online, did show strong evidence that MOOCs are here to stay. A Combination of the Traditional Approach and Online Methods in Conducting Classes

The purpose of this paper is to describe an observation of a problem, issue, or situation during my practicum experience. My practicum had been filled with educational classes filled with lectures and simulations. One thing that has assisted me in the adjustment of the role. As an educator has been the strategy of reading the higher education literature to gain a better understanding of the issues influencing higher education according to Halstead & Frank (2011).

My preceptor reads journals and online nursing education information every day. And has emphasized how important it is for me to become a successful educator. This type of approach to teaching and learning has developed. As a synthesis of inquiry-based, scenario-based and solution-focused approaches. Which strongly promotes active student learning (Rochester, Kelly, Disler, White, Forer, & Matuik, 2012).

The issue that I have observed in most of the educational classes. Is the way that my preceptor has made the andragogical shift in education. As stated by Barrington & Street (2008) from teaching to learning and from teacher to learner. She has mastered the art of facilitating rather than controlling learning. The nurses that attend these classes are adult learners and most are millennial learners. These learners, according to McCurry & Martins, 2009, are sheltered, special, confident, team-oriented, achieving, pressured, and conventional with their views more global and multicultural. With all the distractions these students cause during class, such as texting, and reading their phones, she has changed her teaching strategies that engages these nurses to be interactive, group focused, objective, and experiential states McCurry & Martins, 2009. In one observation, she had finished her PowerPoint presentation and asked if there were any questions, no one answered. She proceeded to divide them into groups for simulation practice. She and one other educator gave each group a scenario and they were to use their critical thinking skills to solve the problem. During the PowerPoint, they seemed that they were not paying attention. They performed each scenario perfectly. The focus on a realistic patient scenario facilitates. The inclusion of clinical and communication skills according to Berragan, 2011. As seen in this practicum lesson, these nurses learned. By the new strategies rather than by the traditional methods of reading in textbooks, using didactic lecture with or without Power Point slides, incorporating objective testing, and having students critique papers of published research, states McCurry & Martins, 2009.

A different plan for approaching this lesson would be to show a DVD, portraying an example of the simulation scenario, discussing the scenario, then break the group up for the simulation lesson. The students would be allowed to discuss their thinking and actions with their role partners, which highlighted the importance of teamwork and leadership, according to Rochester et al., 2012. This lesson taught me how important it is for the educator to make lesson preparation a high priority to allow the nurses to benefit from their lessons.

A Long Way to Legalize Abortion

In this essay I will be examining the concept of capacity and its connection to human rights and duties. I will also be examining the early years of abortion and Marry Anne Warrens argument in her article “On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion.” Towards the end of the essay, with the knowledge of capacity I will be commenting on Warrens remarks in regard to her articles, “Fetal Development and the Right to Life” and Potential Personhood and the Right to Life.”

Capacity is the ability to do, experience or understand something. The human capacity is based on our upbringing, our survival instincts and the social experiences we encounter. Animals do not have the capacity to create moral structure but are able to hold a higher archery amongst themselves. The hierarchy is based upon fear and respect to where challenge may be initiated with the prospect of death. Humans have created a hierarchy with moral rights, a challenge can be initiated without the fear of death.

As human we are bound by our social and moral duties. An example of a social duty would be to your community, respecting the moral rights of others. Examples of moral duties would include telling the truth, obeying the law and protecting the people in your care. An example of a social and moral duty would be to not commit suicide. You have a social duty to your community and a moral duty to your family.

Rationality can be seen in the Australopitecus during the Stone Age Era, when we first see the use of tools. By using rationality, they realized through experimenting and experience using one thing may make a task or duty easier. We see this rationality evolve with our own human development. Are rationality regarding moral rights and duties is based on our capacity to reason due to the evolutionary process.

The nineteen sixties were times of protest and revolution. Dr. Martin Luther King marched with two hundred and fifty thousand people in hopes of better jobs and freedoms, millions of people watched a man take a giant leap for man kind on the moon and yet women were still being denied the right to make their own choices regarding their body. During the nineteen sixties abortion was still illegal in many states with some states offering limitations on abortion. Only when the women’s life was in danger would an abortion be permitted by the doctor in the cases of an abortion banned state.

With abortion being illegal, women turned to the black-market, home remedies and horrific methods of terminating their pregnancies. Many women died due to complications while performing home abortions. People were beginning to open their eyes to the legality of legalizing safe abortions.

Nineteen seventy, Hawaii was the first state to legalize abortions to its residents, following with New York, Alaska and Washington. With many other states still banning abortion. The year is nineteen seventy-three and a decision has just been passed by the United States Supreme Court that will change the legal standings of abortion in the United Sates. The case is Roe vs Wade.

“Jane Roe” was the name given to a young woman to protect her identity in the high-profile case. “Roe” came from low income and could not afford to pay out a physician to terminate her pregnancy. In her state of Texas, abortion was only legal in instances where the mother’s life was in jeopardy. Roe met6 with attorneys Linda Coffee and Sarah Wedding who wanted to fight to change the anti-abortion laws. The road ahead would not be easy and filled with a legal battle against the infamous lawyer Henry Wade. The next year the Roe team had been given a devastating blow, a Texas court ruled that a states abortion ban was illegal because it violated a constitutional right to privacy. The case was soon appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

With a seven to two jury decision the court ruled in favor of Roe. Determining a pregnancy into three trimesters. In the first trimester the women has the choice to terminate the pregnancy, the second trimester would be regulated by the government and the third trimester the government could prohibit the abortion in regards to the fetus. The court found that banned abortion was unconstitutional and effectively legalizing the procedure across the Country. Under the fourteen amendment of the U.S. Constitution the court found that a women’s rights to an abortion was implicit to her protected rights. The court was view and read about by millions of people, one very crucial person was a woman named Mary Anne Warren.

Mary Anne Warren was an American writer and philosophy professor at San Francisco State University. By most Warren is best known for her essays based around abortion. Her essay entitled “On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion” has been required reading material in many college classrooms. Warren is pro-choice and believes every women has the right to choose what to do with her body.

Warren examines the “moral community” and who it is comprised of. Warren believes the moral community is based around “personhood” and made up of humans in two different senses. She discusses the human sense and genetic senses, “From here on, I will use “human” to mean “genetically human,” since the moral sense of the term seems closely connected to, and perhaps derived from, the assumption that genetic humanity is both necessary and sufficient for membership in the moral community.” The genetic sense is that of just physicality whilst the moral sense humans can be thought of those that are representatives of the moral community.

Warren then looks closely at what criteria makes up a person and establishes that a fetus should not be considered a person because it does not meet any of the criteria of “personhood”. Warren has comprised personhood in six criteria. One is sentience, the capacity to have conscious experiences. The second is emotion, the capacity to feel pain and pleasure. The third is reason, the capacity to solve new and relatively complex problems. The fourth is the capacity to communicate, by whatever means, messages of an indefinite variety of types. The fifth is self-awareness, which is having the concept of oneself. The last being sixth is moral agency, the capacity to regulate one’s own actions through moral principles or ideals.

Warren states a human does not have to meet all the criteria to be considered into the moral community but must meet some. She then argues that a fetus does not meet any of the criteria and thus can not be admitted into the moral community. She states, “But small fetuses, which have not yet begun to experience, are not persons yet and do not have the rights that persons do.”

Would a mother be restricting the abnormal fetus of a life if she chooses to selectively terminate the fetus, or would she be benefitting the health fetus by giving it a better chance of living? These questions are usually on the minds of individuals who participate in fetal reduction. Multifetal reduction initially started out. As means of managing pregnancies where carrying multiple embryos posed a high risk to both mother and fetuses. Initial concerns regarding technological advancements were led by matters of life and death and shifted toward acceptance. In today’s time. Indications for multifetal reduction have changed from the crisis of “life and death”. Into the broader issues concerning quality of life. This paper will explore the key concepts. Decision making, a theoretical framework model. And the significance of the decision in nursing when it comes to bioethical issues in multifetal reduction.

It is important to consider the indications for multifetal reduction. Assisted reproductive techniques (ART) such as invitro fertilization-embryo transfer has significantly increased the rate of multiple pregnancies. The article brought out that indications for fetal reduction included the presence of 2 or 3 intrauterine gestational sacs, fetal reduction requested by the patient and family, no recent symptoms of threatened abortion, preoperative examination to exclude the presence of systemic and reproductive system infections, no surgical contraindication (article). Fetal reduction is a surgical procedure in which transvaginal aspiration method of embryo reduction without potassium chloride injection was used. It may be argued that fetal reduction should not be permitted in circumstances where patients and health care providers are aware of the risk associated with ART but decide to utilize them anyway.

The decision to reduce one or more fetuses is complicated, and factors such as procedure risks, or loss of entire pregnancy can occur. Women are usually faced. With this awful decision to consider terminating one or more fetuses to prevent mortality and/or morbidity. The spectrum of Pro-Life and Pro-Choice plays a vital role in the discussion being made. Pro-Life views would have the mother lean towards keeping all fetuses despite the risk to her. Pro-Choice would have the mother lean towards aborting the abnormal fetus to improve the survival of the remaining fetus. A decision is needed in order to give the best outcome for whichever route the mother chose. In terms of the theoretical framework model, this particular bioethical issue aligns with the theme of “Systems approach.” Theorist, Betty Neuman noted nursing responds to individuals, groups, and communities, who are in constant interaction with environmental stressors that create disequilibrium. A critical element is the client’s ability to react to stress and factors that assist with reconstitution or adaption (Henderson, 1966, p.15). The Neuman systems model consist of physiological, psychological, sociocultural, developmental, and spiritual factors.

It also contains a basic core made of survival factors such a system variables, strength and weaknesses of the body systems, and genetics. This theoretical framework model is well suitable for this particular bioethical issue. In which focuses on survival factors. Some patients undergoing multifetal reduction consider. A survival outcome. And the benefits of saving This article particularly mentioned that psychological care is needed when it comes to the nurses’ role. Nurses are responsible for providing good preoperative psychological nursing, eliminating doubts and nervousness so that the patient can better cooperate during surgery. Patient who request or require vaginal multifetal pregnancy reduction may experience stress, anxiety, or other psychological symptoms.

What about the moral principles of a nurse? Selective termination of multifetal pregnancy reduction are justifiable ethically. But may contradict the patients’ or health care professionals’ values. Are their beliefs taken into consideration when it comes to caring for patients who decide to have fetal reduction surgery? A Reflection on the Actions of Alex in into the Wild

After reading about McCandless' adventure in Into the Wild, I'm a little on the fence about his decision to leave himself at the whim of nature. I agree somewhat with the statements that accuse McCandless of being wildly romantic, but I don't agree with the opinion that he was arrogant. I'm sure he did not completely know what he was up against when making the decision to trek to Alaska, but Alex did attempt to educate himself on techniques of living off of the land. In his book, Krakauer mentions a few times how the boy would ask local hunters about catching game. And it wasn't as if McCandless thought he would survive either. He sent letters to at least two of the people he met while on the road, letters which stated that he might not come back from his Alaskan trip. He was a boy of ideals. Alex didn't get carried away by his dreams; he followed them, something people no longer seem to do. I'm not like him. I'm not driven by passion the way Alex seemed to be, but there are some matters of his opinion that parallel with mine.

One of the first things that caught my attention was Alex's rant against his parents when they wanted to buy him a car. He made a valid argument: the car still ran, it never failed him, it was still in pretty good condition. He didn't need a new car, therefore he didn't want one. I react the same way when my parents offer to get me something I don't necessarily need. In August, when I was preparing all of my things to go to college, my mom was listing a bunch of items that I would "need," although they were more like luxuries. It would have been a waste of time and money, really, to buy things like a coffeemaker or a fan. For one, I don't drink coffee. Also, I can deal with high temperatures pretty well on my own.

 Another item that struck a chord with me was when Alex burned the last of his money. I still thought it was a little absurd, but I also admired the act a little bit. I hate money, or rather, I hate how we live in a world ruled by paper. And if I could, I would like to live without it, but not in the way McCandless attempted to do so. I am certainly not the outdoorsy type. If there were a way to somehow place the concept of money towards the back of one's mind rather than in the forefront, I feel like people could probably live a less restricted type of life. Many choices that are made today are run by money. I tried to apply to a job a few weeks ago. Not because I wanted to, but because I knew I needed the money. I didn't think much about it, nor did I receive a call back and, quite frankly, I'm relieved. The last thing I want is to spend time working at a place I hate, especially with no previous work experience. This is one of many aspects where McCandless and I differ. He wanted that trip to Alaska and he also knew he needed money, but he was willing to work. 

Regarding how Alex looked at people and favored their company, well, I believe everyone is like that. Social interaction is what everyone craves, on different levels, of course. Sources in Krakauer's book theorize that while McCandless liked comapny, he also feared being tied down by intimate relations. That's common in many folks. As for me, I like being in people's company, but I'm also really shy, so I wouldn't appeal to people in the way that Alex did. In fact, I hardly have any friends since I came to California, which is a little sad, but I think it's that fear of commitment that might be getting to me. I like having a lot of free time, even if I don't spend it as radically as Alex did. Having to dedicate some time to hang out with new friends, I can't necessarily say I want to do that even though I do want friends.

Abortion Laws under the Trump Presidency

Typically a State of the Union address is used to announce new initiatives and to rally support for proposed legislation, but to little surprise, Trump spent much of his time talking about his accomplishments over the past year. President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech was markedly different from State of the Union addresses we are used to hearing from past presidents, but it was also quite different from what we have come to expect from our 45th president too. It was clear that he was trying to appeal to both parties, and had made some compromises on some of his policies in order to appease both sides. This is unlike his typical foot-down approach, and I personally found it slightly refreshing coming from him. Trump was able to give us some insight into what types of initiatives he will be rolling out soon, including some surprising proposals, such as a plan to attempt to end new HIV cases in America by 2030, and some less surprising ones, like a call to end late-term abortions.

Just last year, Trump’s proposed budget for 2019 included a $35 million cut to domestic HIV/AIDS research and $1 billion in cuts to global research, so his recent support is being reviewed by many public health officials who are hopeful that this is a step in the right direction. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar wrote, that we have “a once-in-a-generation opportunity to end the epidemic, thanks to the most powerful HIV prevention and treatment tools in history and new tools that allow us to pinpoint where HIV infections are spreading most rapidly.” Azar goes on to say, “thanks to new laboratory and epidemiological techniques, we are able to focus in on geographic regions in greatest need of additional resources.”(AZAR) Trump’s plan aims to target counties that have the highest numbers of newly infected patients by supplying them with increased access to preventative medicines and antiretrovirals.

Many of the people who have spoken in support of Trump’s initiative, titled Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America, have also been the main ones suggesting that more must be done in order to reduce global AIDS numbers. Matt Kavanagh, director of the Global Health Policy & Governance Initiative at Georgetown Law, spoke to NPR, stating that the administration's new domestic policy of using the vast amount to public health research that has been done on the HIV epidemic to find the most concentrated spots of outbreaks is what we need to also be focusing on at a global level. 'The strategies are the same,' he says. 'We have more and more data on where transmissions are happening. But there's no money to expand, so we end up really losing ground.' (MCDONNELL)

It has also been stated by Kevin Osborne, executive director of the International AIDS Society. That president must look deeper into other ways. He is impeding the global aids fight, such as by reinstating the “global gag rule”, which blocks federal funding to clinics that offer information on abortions, even though most of those clinics also offer many services for people who are at risk of, or in need to treatment for HIV. Despite stating several times throughout. His campaign that he was pro-choice (SOURCE). Trump has spent his presidency advocating for stricter abortion laws. And in his State of the Union speech. The president asked Congress to support legislation to end late-term abortions. “There could be no greater contrast to the beautiful image of a mother holding her infant child than the chilling displays our nation saw in recent days,” he said. “Lawmakers in New York cheered with delight upon the passage of legislation that would allow a baby to be ripped from the mother’s womb moments from birth.” (MCDONNELL) The president was referring to a new law recently which changes the rules allowing late-term abortions from “threatening the life of the mother” to threatening the life or health of the mother”. In response to this new law, Republicans in the House of Representatives have drafted up a bill that would require medical care for babies who survive failed late-term abortions, and according to the Washington Post writer Sean Sullivan, the Senate is working on a similar bill. Sullivan writes, “At a closed-door luncheon on Wednesday, Cruz told his colleagues the Senate needed to vote on a bill that Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) put forward Monday that closely resembled the House measure, according to two Republicans familiar with the meeting.” (SULLIVAN) The president has also received commendation from groups such as Americans For Life, who stated Trump may be “the most pro-life president in American history.” (REILLY)

Senate Democrats blocked the bill Monday, and in a statement released by Patty Murray’s office. The Senator stated, “all this bill does is give Republican politicians more ways to try to interfere with decisions that are between a woman and her doctor.” (SULLIVAN) Many women who have had late-term abortions have stood up against Trump’s comments, stating that late-term abortion is not something that a woman would do unless it was medically necessary or if the fetus wasn’t viable. Kurzweil, a New York City woman who a 23-week abortion in 2017, stated that she was forced to make an “impossible choice” after being informed that her baby had a brain disorder that would have caused him immense pain for his entire life. “No one wakes up 20 weeks into a gestation period and says ‘I made a mistake.’ These are wanted pregnancies.” She continues, “It really was this choice of quality of life and what is a livable life.” Dr. Kristyn Brandi, an obstetrician-gynecologist and board member of Physicians for Reproductive. Health says she is worried that “[Republicans are] using. These theoretical extreme examples to try and scare people.” And that their concerns about women getting abortions while in labor are unfounded. (REILLY)

I think that the President’s goal for eliminating new cases of HIV in America by 2030 is very admirable and very doable, but first, he must realize that he is impeding his own goal by being so anti-abortion. Many of the abortion clinics that he has blocked federal funding to are the same clinics that offer services such as Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PreP, which greatly lowers the chances of contracting HIV in groups that are high risk. I think it’s extremely important that we keep abortion safe a legal. At all stages, for all women. Because is never an easy choice. And if we can’t trust women to make this decision themselves. We can not say we are “empowering women”, as Trump stated he was many times in his State of the Union.

The Author’s Similarly Reckless Adventures in into the Wild

On Into the Wild The ordering of the information presented in Krakauer's Into the Wild made sense to me. The way the events were put together with the different accounts of the people Krakauer interviewed made McCandless' story more interesting than if it had been told in a sequential fashion. A large portion of the second half of the text narrates one of the author's similarly reckless adventures. Krakauer spends a lot of time comparing his experience climbing the Devil's Thumb with McCandless' attempt to live in the wild Alaskan bush. In many cases, the author seemed to have an even tougher time than Chris. However, Krakauer had gotten lucky and was rescued. 

In his written reflection, Krakauer seems to be searching for something by comparing his experience with Chris McCandless'. He mentions in the text that the scorn from McCandless' critics may stem from a sort of guilt and theorizes that the critics themselves had probably been just as naive and adventurous as Chris. Having grown up and lost their former spirit, however, they can no longer empathize with the musings of a boy. Krakauer may have been attempting not only to understand McCandless but also himself by writing about his climb up the Devil's Thumb. By analyzing McCandless' motives for putting his life in danger, he might be able to better understand the decisions he had made in the past. Even more so, Krakauer was probably searching for a common root among all people that causes them to make wild decisions. In the text, he mentions several men who have also attempted living among nature. All had failed. Most have died. 

To a certain degree, there seems to be an idea that is shared among many. If not the idea that humans should belong to nature, then that they are too isolated from it. Not everyone is going to go out into the wild to prove this point. But there is still a certain longing toward nature that exists from person to person in varying degrees. People like McCandless are on the extreme end of the spectrum, but there are others who express this desire in a less threatening way. For example, people who have money like to buy houses with good views, maybe along a coastal line or even a private beach. Those that can afford it will buy cabins out by the countryside where they can view the stars without interference of city lights. When people want to play outside, they prefer a park with greenery: grass, trees, bushes. True, not necessarily nature, but it still leans toward that idea. Perhaps Krakauer wanted to find an explanation for this common desire among people.

An Analysis of Language in into the Wild

In the book "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer the author uses language that really serves a purpose in the story. Krakauer uses objective and dispassionate language. Objective language is when the protagonist or antagonist of the story is trying to achieve a goal or making progress throughout the story. Passionate language is when the writer uses barely any emotion or biased in their writing style. Jon Krakauer uses objective and passionate styles in his writing techniques, for example on page 4 of "Into the Wild" Alex the main character says he'll "live off the land for a few months." By saying this so early in the book, the author gets his points across and uses objective writing techniques to show the goal that the protagonist wants to achieve by the climax, or the resolution of the story.

Throughout the whole book, Alex constantly keeps reminding himself of the way he will achieve his goal of getting to Alaska. By doing this, he meets a bunch of people that will pick him up and give him rides to certain places and sometimes go eat dinner with him. Everyone that he comes across to, he is constantly telling them no matter what happens, he is getting to Alaska even if somebody becomes so attached to him and will get in his way. On page 55, a character named Ron Franz asked Alex if he will be able to adopt him. "So I asked Alex if I could adopt him, if he would be my grandson." Then, with one goal on his mind, Alex responds "We'll talk about it when I get back from Alaska, Ron." By saying all this objective language helps the purpose of the book and gives it a storyline. 

The author also uses passionate language in his writing. By being biased in this story, he is able to explain a life like Alex's. In the story, Krakauer describes everything in Alex's favor. Throughout most of the book, we hear the side of Alex and how great this man is but looking at what he really did, he doesn't seem like the perfect boy that the author makes him. Alex left his family just to go on an adventure that he ends up dying in. That's what makes Krakauer biased because of the way that Alex is displayed. Jon Krakauer uses passionate language and objective language to show the purpose of the story and why it is so important.

Controversies Regarding the Issue of Abortion

The issue on abortion has been an ongoing dispute between those who are pro-choice and anti-choice. The biggest issues in resolving this matter is who has say in what is legal or illegal. In 1973 the case Roe vs. Wade was decided by Supreme Courts. The Supreme Court ruled that abortions would be legal in the United States. But each state has the power to put restrictions. And since the court ruled that abortion would be legal many people have fought to have Roe vs. Wade overturned.

In today’s time and with the Trump administration in place, the urge to have abortion banned is a current issue. The Trump administration has been fighting to put restrictions on abortion services and has targeted Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is an organization that offers services in reproductive health to all sexes and ages and the shutdown of these clinics would have an overwhelming effect on millions of people being cared for by these services. One of the main causes for the shutdown of clinics are TRAP laws, which are, “Targeted Restrictions on Abortion Providers designed to close them down rather than make them safer for women”, as defined by Planned Parenthood. TRAP laws are mainly enforced by the state government rather than the national government but this is a nationwide issue and decisions based upon it should be equal throughout all states.
 
In the past the federal government has put certain regulations that apply to all states such as banning abortions after the second-trimester, the issue with this is that on top of this ban states still have the power to implement more restrictions, which makes it unfair for women across different states. States have the power to put restrictions on insurance coverage, TRAP laws, abortion bans and biased counseling. These issues should not be decided by the states but rather the Supreme Court. It is important for the federal government to interfere because. It is unfair that women have different accessibilities in the same clinics across the United States. Planned Parenthood should be able to help and offer the same and equal care to all and women should not be denied access to abortions or counseling in one state but allowed access in another.
 
Another issue that is brought up by anti-abortionist is funding and where it is coming from. Planned Parenthood does receive federal funding and anti-abortionist argue. That those funds are being used for abortion services. In reality the “federal funding is from Medicaid reimbursements for preventative care”, as stated by Planned Parenthood. That being said currently some states as well as the Trump administration are fighting to defund Planned Parenthood. This action will ultimately lead Planned Parenthood to shut down clinics across the US and leave millions without care. Therefore, the issue should be resolved by the federal government because the issue affects millions. It is important to not let states regulate something that affects millions of people but rather the federal government to have say over all the states and make it equal. Conflicts regarding abortion should be resolved at the national level to prevent discrepancies between states and also to allow rulings to be fair.

Different Styles of Leadership

1. Great Man Theories

Based on the belief that leaders are exceptional people, born with innate qualities, destined to lead. The use of the term 'man' was intentional since until the latter part of the twentieth-century leadership was thought of as a concept which is primarily male, military and Western. This led to the next school of Trait Theories.

2. Trait Theories

The lists of traits or qualities associated with leadership exist in abundance and continue to be produced. They draw on virtually all the adjectives in the dictionary which describe some positive or virtuous human attribute, from ambition to zest for life.

3. Behaviourist Theories

These concentrate on what leaders actually do rather than on their qualities. Different patterns of behaviour are observed and categorized as ‘styles of leadership’. This area has probably attracted the most attention from practising managers.

4. Situational Leadership

This approach sees leadership as specific to the situation in which it is being exercised. For example, while some situations may require an autocratic style, others may need a more participative approach. It also proposes that there may be differences in required leadership styles at different levels in the same organization.

5. Contingency Theory

This is a refinement of the situational viewpoint and focuses on identifying the situational variables which best predict the most appropriate or effective leadership style to fit the particular circumstances.

6. Transactional Theory

This approach emphasizes the importance of the relationship between leader and followers, focusing on the mutual benefits derived from a form of ‘contract’ through which the leader delivers such things as rewards or recognition in return for the commitment or loyalty of the followers

7. Transformational Theory

The central concept here is change and the role of leadership in envisioning and implementing the transformation of organisational performance.

(2003) in their “A Review of Leadership Theory and Competency Frameworks” there are other theories of leadership such as The Managerial grid model theory, Functional theory, Leader-Member Exchange, Charismatic Leadership, Substitutes Leadership, and so forth. Since these theories are not summarised in work mentioned above, we shall be briefly investigating some of the recent development of the leadership theories. It is often said that since the 1970s, several alternative theoretical frameworks for the study of leadership have been advanced. Among the more important of these the leader-member exchange theory, the substitutes for leadership approach, and the theory of servant leadership are central, and we shall be briefly investigating these three leadership theories.

Leader-Member Exchange: Leader-Member Exchange theory of leadership is one of the essential models for leadership. According to V. R. Krishnan (2005), the Leader-Member Exchange (LMX), theory occupies a unique position among leadership theories because of its focus on the two-way relationship between leader and follower (Krishnan, 2005). He goes on to say that Leader-Member Exchange theory was initially denoted to as VDL (Vertical Dyad Linkage) theory, in which leaders and followers grow two-way relationships and leaders treat individual di?erently, resulting in two groups of followers—an in-group and an out-group. Both have been found to be positively related to follower’s satisfaction, organisational commitment, role clarity, performance ratings given by leaders, and phenomenal performance, and negatively related to role con?ict and turnover intentions (Bauer and Green, 1996). Moreover, there are four states in the development of the LMX theory, i.e., (i) Vertical Dyad Linkage, (ii) Leader-Member Exchange, (iii) Leadership-Making, and (iv) Team-Making.

Servant Leadership Theory: Servant-leadership is a theory of leadership proposed by R. K. Greenleaf in 1970 with advocating that a leader’s primary motivation and role as service to others. According to Greenleaf “the great leader is seen as servant first;” nevertheless, the theory affirms leader should be servants first. L. Spears (1996) defines it as “…A new kind of leadership model – a model which puts serving others as the number one priority. Servant-leadership emphasises increased service to others; a holistic approach to work; promoting a sense of community, and the sharing of power in decision-making” (Spears, 1996).

He goes on to say that, there are at least four central tenets, i.e., service to others, holistic approach to work, promoting a sense of community, and sharing of power in decision-making. Each of these central tenets can derive only from the selflessness motivation that resides within the leader. This foundation is distinctive to servant-leadership. In addition to these four central tenets, there are ten Servant-Leadership attributes such as Listening, Empathy, Healing, Awareness, Persuasion, Conceptualization, Foresight, Stewardship, Commitment to the growth of people, and Building community (Greenleaf, 1996).

Different Styles of Leadership: Beside these a variety of approaches that have developed over the decades, there are specific styles of leadership, which has been developed over the decades. It is often said that leaders who used specific styles according to circumstances that positively affects the organisations (Goleman, 2017). According to Goleman (2017), executives or managers use six leadership styles.

Servant Leadership Methodology in my Secular Environment

The foundation of Christian Ethics have to be rooted in reference of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Therefore, Christian ethics would be the principles resulting from the Christian faith by which we act. While God’s word may not cover every situation we face throughout our lives, its principles give us the standards by which we must conduct ourselves in those situations where there are no obvious instructions. I feel Christian Ethics is well summarized by Colossians 3:1-6. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory? Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.” What makes it so difficult in today’s society is we frequently call upon very general principles that are not tied to any religious or philosophical world view because that’s what we are exposed to more regularly than Christian principles.

In reflecting on our reading on Ethics I realize there are many forms of biblical ethics that reflects the behavior, character, and actions of the people proclaiming to be God’s people. When you consider Ethics in Torah, Ethics in the Prophets, and Ethic in the New Testament one realize that the principles are expressed to a community of people being exposed to the same doctrine over the same period of time. This enables them the time and ability to have an impact on the audience they are focusing on to build solid Christian ethics and values. I believe what makes Christian Ethics problematic in our secular society today is that people are less community involved and practice more individualism. Technology have enabled people to forsake the assembly of the righteous and worship via live stream across the world if they would like. So it becomes very difficult to instill Christian Ethics in people whom are not around you long enough to learn who they are or what their beliefs are.

Under both secular and Christian thought, we are self-governing beings. We have free will. We make choices. We have an inherent right to govern our lives free of undue coercion, even if such coercion is offered for our own good or the good of a wider community. But Christians must exercise our dependence within the context of our primary identity as God’s beloved children and as those created in God’s image. We have free will but we are not free agents, with the license to live however we like with no consideration for how our lives are connected to God and others.

I find it most problematic to live up to my Christian principles in the work environment I’m spending the majority of my day in. I generally work at least 55 hours a week in an environment where people are openly self-absorbed in secular principles from the hourly associates to top leadership. I’m constantly managing people with what’s in it for me mentality and want to do less work for more money. The hourly associates have a strong union that have spoiled them to the point that they have forgotten that their pay check have Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company on it and not USW Local 831. Middle management at my level and senior leadership for the most part have a dogmatic management style that is no longer effective in today’s workforce. They have not adapted to the generational change in our work place and are having a hard time transitioning to a more developmental leadership style. I consider myself as more of a servant leader and over time have gained the respect of others as a manager and leader. My focus is on giving others what they need to be successful and win. Whether it be resources, guidance, inspiration, or discipline. For me the satisfaction is building a team that understands the benefits of striving for the greater good. Adopting the servant leadership methodology in my secular environment have enable me the ability to adhere to my Christian Ethics at work and have afforded me the opportunity to Pastor a wonderful group of people.

Leadership Theories: Servant Leadership, Transformational Leadership

Over the course of the semester I was given the opportunity to educate myself on different leadership theories that allowed to see how I represented myself as a leader. I was able to match myself up with theories that best described me as a personal leader and learn more about the theory, so I knew exactly what I was identifying with and pointers on how to better develop myself as that leadership style. I identify myself with Transformational Leadership and Servant Leadership. Transformational leadership is defined as engaging with others to build a connection that increases motivation and morality in both the leader and the follower (Northouse 2019.). Transformational leadership has influenced my present leadership experiences. I have been able to use this leadership approach with groups I’ve lead with and its always brought much success to the group. I have been able to gain and give trust to others and share the overall vision I have. It has allowed me to grow as a person and professionally, which is necessary in order for me to best I can be and so I produce these results onto other followers so they can also grow personally and professionally. With my leadership experience I have unlocked a door of knowing how to reach and relate to my followers in the best way possible. When you have a clear vision on your goals and you interact with your team it allows you to build the ability to create a personalized bond with them because everyone can input ideas and know one way or another it can get implemented or used in a different project. Its all about inducing change within how followers and leaders interact with one another, which was great for me because I am all about building quality relationships, so everyone feels comfortable with themselves, the group, and the leader. When I would have the goals or tasks set and broke down how we needed to get there everyone was always able to get on board and help in how they could because they knew what the end result would bring.

With the wide variety of leadership approaches another one that has made a positive impact on me would be Servant Leadership. Servant leadership is defined as gaining a natural feeling of wanting to serve and serve first before anything then aspire to lead next (Northouse 2019.). This has also had an impact on my leadership skills because it thought me how to put other people before me and help those in need. Based off all of the characteristics of being a Servant leader it has allowed me to create value for the community and give off an empowering feeling to others. I also learned it served long term results, which I felt was great who the people I helped because it’s usually better to have long term results than short term results. What also helped with my experience was that I experienced stewardship firsthand, having that responsibility of someone else’s care in your hands because they trust you lets you know that this is something serious, there is no room to play around. You are in charge of helping someone get back on their feet and you want to do a good job because if you were in the same predicament you would want someone to practice good stewardship towards you. Instead of being a leader you are practicing being a teacher because you want them to learn and grow because they are following you, it’s not so much about being a leader with an action driven pack. I was focused on helping others and not myself which was a challenge because I was used to being a leader and knowing my team and I have to look good and be up to far I can’t slack as a leader, but with Servant Leadership I realized I wasn’t a leader and it wasn’t about my looks it was about the other people and how they can hundred percent look better or be better than they were yesterday. I would say that it felt good for once not to be giving orders be rather enabling others to care more about themselves and their future with me helping them instead of doing it on their own.

The definition of personal leadership has changed over time to me. From what I used to think it was to what it is now after taking this course and doing my own reflection. To me personal leadership means taking responsibility and charge of your life, making your own decisions (the right one). Being a personal leader means always being ready to grow and expand in all horizons when positioned to you. You can set goals and attain those goals, which is good personal development. You give yourself a voice you knew never you had and speak up when you have uncertainties, otherwise known as help seeking because it takes courage to do so and also shows you are trying to well prepared for small or big challenges. When you think something should be done in a different way, basically arguing a point of view you are showing personal leadership. What allowed me to come to this definition of personal leadership would be the Leader Member Exchange Theory (In & Out Group) and Situational Leadership. Dealing with LMX is pretty straightforward because it lets you in on the type of people you may come around whether working in a management setting or leadership setting. For this I will mainly be focusing on In Group and Out Group from the LMX to better set my definition of personal leadership. The In-Group contains members who are all about work, but most importantly teamwork. They work effectively to help the leader get tasks done in a timely fashion. They have a high-quality relationship with the leader which means it contains communication, trust, and respect. They enjoy what they do and go that extra mile. In Group portrays my definition because they show the characteristic of good personal leadership as followers so when they become leaders they already have the skills and knowledge to be a great leader. For Out Group they are members who have a low-quality relationship with the leader, they usually just come to work, do what they have to do and leave; they do not enjoy what they do; they are unmotivated and less committed. They do not portray good personal leadership because they don’t set higher standards for themselves to do good and be given the respect they deserve. You have to earn respect sometimes and if you are slacking and not giving something your all, you can not be mad that those in In Group are treated with respect when they do what is asked of them a little bit extra. This can be discouraging for those in Out Group; I do understand, but if you don’t present yourself with courage and confidence to step and be a great team member then you are going to lack personal development skills which would bring tremendous growth to your personal leadership. Out group basically taught me what not to look for in a leader or someone who could have the potential because they already lack in the follower category.

Situational Leadership is a style of leadership that not only focuses on adjusting your style to the situation, but also used with leadership training and development (Northouse 2019.). I think Situational leadership is a good fit for the definition because the main skill is adaptability. That plays a close pair with personal leadership because you need to be able to adapt to any situation quick whether you put yourself in that situation or you got put in that situation. You have to able to adapt to it and know how to handle it. You have to know how to meet the needs of other people, not just yourself. There are four types of styles of situational leadership and they all give you an insight of how to act depending on the environment. You have delegating, supporting, coaching, and directing. All either have a high supportive or a low directive behavior favoring how you adapt. The three main skills of Situational leadership are goal setting, diagnosing, and matching. All three of these skills go hand in hand with personal leadership because you must set goals that’s the only way you grow and know how to haggle obstacles, you must diagnose the goal or task and match how to achieve that goal with a style you are comfortable with. Everyone has a different definition of personal leadership; this is mine and how it best works for me to understand it and know what skills I need to grow and what would hinder me from growing in personal leadership.

From my course of time taking this class it has allowed me to envision how I want my future leadership style to be. As in I know what I want to improve on more to change my style and try something new that may work even better for me. From all of the theories learned in the class the final two theories I look forward to using in my future would be Adaptive leadership and Authentic leadership. For these allow me to build new characteristics about myself I did not have before.

Adaptive leadership is a new hands-on approach leading style that would a challenge for me, but a challenge willing to conquer. Adaptive leadership is defined as focusing on the adaptations workers need to make in response to changing environments (Northouse 2019.). Adaptive leadership stresses activities of the leaders that optimizes work of the followers in the context of when they find themselves. How I envision my future with this leadership style is it teaching me to mobilize myself while thriving and tackling rough challenges that come my way. I want to be able to thrive in more complex environments without feeling stuck or lost on how to switch up.

This is different from my current leadership styles because I am oriented in helping others and putting my best foot forward being a leader everyone can come to because we have high quality relationships. I am not so oriented in changing up leadership styles based off the environment and I would like to become more proficient in that, because it would aid in me learning different scenarios and the most efficient way to handle it. I would also be able to practice working under high pressure cause I can learn to mask such pressure where it literally feels like a breeze.

Authentic Leadership is the last style I would like to use in my future to switch up my style. Authentic Leadership is defined as focusing on whether the leadership is genuine or not (Northouse 2019.). With Authentic Leadership I like how it involves ruling out unethical behaviors and fake “trustworthy’ leaders. We have a lot of scam leaders who are not the best leaders, they are probably just in it for the popularity and money it may bring in, but me I like how you can be the real you and go by your ethical values without feeling like there may be consequences. I envisioned this for my future because I would be able to behave in a manner that falls in line with good principals and values and empower others to take action and do the same thing as me. I would be able to take others into consideration and not feel like I have to meet a status and make the most popular decision that everyone is mostly like going to make too.

This is different from my current leadership styles because they don’t fall into a true authentic feeling or relate to this style of leadership. I only say this because yes you are expected to be your true self, but there are morals or rules you must follow that may break your personal morals and I feel like with Authentic Leadership I would not have to do that. I can be true to my own character that I built myself to be. I would also love to share that with others to be your true authentic self because there are so many people who are hiding that in Leadership and that is how they differ themselves. I would rather open up doors to those who are real than those who hide behind a mask and say they are “real”.

Diana, Princess of Wales as a Servant Leader

“I think the biggest disease the world suffers from in this day and age is the disease of people feeling unloved. I know that I can give love for a minute, for half an hour, for a day, for a month, but I can give. I am very happy to do that, I want to do that.” (Paul 2017). This quote articulated by Diana, Princess of Wales. These simple, yet poignant words epitomized her mission. This was one of many quotes by her that referenced kindness and love. It also had a significant amount to do with why I chose Diana as one of my favorite leaders.

This was not a simple decision as there are so many extraordinary leaders throughout history and in my personal life to which I draw practices and strategies from each and every day. These are leaders who distinguish themselves from others with the dominant qualities such as vitality, self-confidence and charisma. My immediate responses were the more glaring options; those people and leaders who command power such as Steve Jobs, Angela Merkel or Bill Gates. After much reflection on the subject I selected Diana because she encompassed the entire package. She truly embodied glamour, compassion and duty.

To understand Diana’s leadership, we must first understand a little about her. Diana Spencer was born on July 1st, 1961 in Sandringham, United Kingdom. She later became Lady Diana Spencer in 1975 after her father inherited the title of Earl Spencer. On July 29th, 1981 she married Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne on July 29, 1981; advancing her to Princess of Wales. Together they had two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. The couple divorced in 1996. Sadly, Diana died from injuries sustained in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997 (Princess Diana 2019).

Management author Robert Greenleaf describes servant leadership as a calling to serve (Manning & Curtis 2019). Princess Diana was not only an amazing human being but she epitomized servant leadership. While all styles of leadership are important, servant leadership is selfless and truly focused on serving the interest of others. Even in her younger years, Diana had a great affection for children. This innate quality to understand and help people would translate in her later years into humanitarianism. It would also be especially evident in how enamored she was with her sons. Although Diana was predominantly private and shy she had the ability to enchant an audience. People were drawn to her and her authenticity. She had tremendous character which was based on a value system that was known, stated, cherished, lived and lived habitually. Clear vision and concern for others were leadership characteristics that motivated her and ultimately developed into her multitude of achievements. She knew she wanted to help people and this vision was obvious to anyone that knew her. Humility and selflessness were characteristics she demonstrated that may have differentiated her from the royal family. Princess Diana was recognized for being one of the first British Monarch’s to adopt servant leadership style (Cumberledge 2018). Diana was a great leader because of her profound commitment to social causes and charity work.

In addition to being a style icon, she was also extremely relatable to the general public. Behind the tiara and British monarchy, she was an immensely vulnerable woman. She opened up publicly about her battle with depression and bulimia. In the early 90’s when mental well-being was not at the forefront of overall health she gave a series of interviews which helped break away the stigma that surrounded mental health (Mendle 2017). Princess Diana encouraged anyone suffering to get help and by speaking publicly empowered those who felt alone to reach out and ask for the much needed assistance. She brought awareness to subjects she had firsthand experience with.

Unbelievably, the years she spoke openly about her struggle with bulimia, rates of women seeking treatment for bulimia in Great Britain more than doubled. The press coined this phenomenon the “Diana effect” (Mendle 2017). Diana did nothing more than share her reality but her story resonated with the public. It is because of these outstanding qualities she was affectionately referred to as “The People’s Princess”.

As a Princess it was her duty to attend galas and charity events, as an amazing leader it was her mission to spread compassion and love everywhere she could. Uncomfortable in the spotlight, she was able to capitalize on her leadership qualities and turn the publicity into the greater cause. Diana’s positivity and altruism, even while battling inner demons, were an inspiration to those that followed her.

Her humanitarian nature and philanthropic ways were admired by millions around the world. In a positon of power, she changed the face of British monarchy with her direct work with charities and people. Contact with the people became somewhat of a personal calling for Princess Diana and at one point she was supporter of over 100 charities. While on her visits to schools, hospitals and galas was well-known for devoting hours conversing with people and just listening to their experiences. These conversations were not for publicity or for display; they were authentically because she cared about those she spoke to. She campaigned for a worldwide ban of landmines after a visit to Angola in 1997 and became anti-landmine activists’ most prevalent advocate. (Frost 2018) Diana broke barriers with two of the most taboo diseases at the time; HIV/AIDS and leprosy. In a period where both diseases were thought to be passed by touch, she went out of her way to ensure those plagued did not feel ostracized. It was meaningful to her that she shook hands with and touched these patients. She understood the importance of human touch and kindness. Diana put aside any trepidation to care for those in need. To her humanity prevailed over any ignorance surrounding an ailment. She often put others needs above her own and was not afraid of being close to those suffering or less fortunate.

Princess Diana has changed my own leadership style and goals in that I practice more compassion because of her. I’ve worked with many people and leaders who exude the hardened exterior showing no flaws or fault in fear of exhibiting weakness. To this I have found the opposite effect to be true. It is when exposure to flaws is shared with others does the true learning begin. Acknowledging imperfections, practicing humbleness and moving forward are critical components of growth and learning.

These are tools that I have not only picked up from Princess Diana and other strong leaders but also important instilling these values to others. I’ve personally taken amazing lessons from Diana’s leadership as well as other humble leaders like herself. The response she received by the public because of her openness and sincerity was admirable. She possessed the instrumental principles of caring leaders including honesty, consideration, responsibility, persistence, excellence and commitment. Leaders that have been forthcoming with their trials and tribulations show culpability that not many of the more robotic dignitaries are willing to exhibit. There have been many a situation, both personally and professionally, I have been honest and stayed true to myself by exposing fault. This has not only substantiated trust but also been leveraged as a coaching tool for others. In reciprocation I find it refreshing when leaders open up and share struggles they have encountered, putting aside their ego. This quality in leaders demonstrates they are secure with their core values and open to learning at any and all stages of their lives.

I have always felt drawn to the late Princess in her grace, beauty and unbelievably kind heart. Subconsciously it may have to do with the fact we also share a birthday. I have always admired Diana’s modesty and profound care for others. She influenced others to be generous. According to The Princess Diana Memorial Fund, established in response to the outpouring of support which flooded in at the time of her death, the community groups and general public donated some $44 million. When the Fund ended in 2012, it had awarded 727 grants to 471 organizations and spent over $145 million on charitable causes (Frost 2018). Her children, William and Harry, have grown to carry on her legacy through charitable actions and loving hearts. Her impact was amazingly strong not only through her own children but people around the world.

Generally when leaders are referenced our immediate response leans toward the powerful, wealthy and forceful individuals. Servant leadership excludes people who are motivated by selfish goals. This style inverts the norm. Instead of the people working to serve the leader, the leader exists to serve the people. Princess Diana was a powerful woman whose fundamental purpose was to help others. This is where she felt most comfortable and at ease. She left an impression on everyone she came in contact with. The world is a better place having had her in it and that in of itself is leadership at its finest.

Different Aspects and Views on Abortion as a Procedure

Overview

Late term abortion is an abortion that occurs when the fetus may be able to survive outside of the mother’s womb. Currently 36 states have a ban on late term abortions. Most of these states recognize anything after the twentieth week of a pregnancy as “late term”. Those that advocate late term abortion support the opinion that it is simply the woman’s right to choose whether or not she continues with the pregnancy.

Key Viewpoints

The first viewpoint on abortion is that it is a woman’s choice whether she has an abortion or not. This is the belief because the fetus is viewed as an extension of the mother’s body. Those who hold this view say that late-term abortion should be acceptable if the mother’s or baby’s life would be in danger. In one example when the Zika virus has infected the mother; while the baby may look normal in early ultrasounds, but later in the pregnancy birth defects could start appearing. Even though abortion becomes less of an option later into the pregnancy, birth defects are more likely to appear later in the pregnancy. Pro-choice advocates argue that this is why late-term abortion should be ok.

The second viewpoint of late-term abortion is that they are only performed when in the best interest of mother or fetus. In an article posted by Rita Panahi of Herald Sun Newspaper in Victoria, Australia, Ms. Panahi explains that she is pro-choice but still does not support late-term abortions. She goes on to say that only extremely pro-abortion advocates could support a healthy and viable fetus being aborted (Panahi).

The third viewpoint of late-term abortions is that no abortion should be ok, especially not late-term abortions. Those who hold to this view often do so because of religious views. Others hold this view because of the belief that abortion is morally wrong, and some consider it murder. A new act called the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act has been considered a few times now. This act would protect any unborn child in the womb who could feel the pain that an abortion would cause. Unborn children start feeling pain between eighteen and twenty weeks (Knowledge Source: Late-term abortions).

Summary of Personal Views

I believe abortion, in all aspects and no matter what point in the pregnancy it takes place, is murder. I understand there are situations, such as rape, where the woman does not want the child. Other reasons, such as, if having the baby would threaten the woman’ s life, where I could see abortion as an understandable solution. While I do not agree with the decision to end a babies life, I can understand where the woman would be coming from. In 2016, South Carolina joined the growing list of states that have banned late-term abortion. South Carolina defines a late-term abortion as an abortion taking place after the twenty week mark (Jarvie). I strongly believe that a woman who has an abortion late-term should be held accountable for her actions and possibly face criminal charges. I understand the argument of- our orphanages are already full. While this may be true, I believe every child, born or unborn, should be given the chance to live. I believe that an effective way to help our orphanages would be to reach out to families who are already looking to adopt. If a couple is willing to adopt, the government should do all in their power to keep the cost of adoption low and make it easier to adopt.

Morals and ethics are important to everything that people do, this importance applies especially so to leadership. Leaders influence those who follow them, and as such they must take careful action to ensure that they act as ethical leaders. Johnson (2018), describes ethical leadership as a “two-part process,” in which a leader performs moral actions and guides the ethical development of those around him or her (p. xxii). Unfortunately, leaders sometimes fail ethically in their actions, and therefore are unable to guide those around them; an example of such failure is found when examining the leadership of Larry Nassar. Larry Nassar’s ethical failure shows that a leader’s actions can be horrible when left unchecked; however, followers have the unique opportunity to change their leader’s unethical failures into new, transformative leadership.

Doctor Larry Nassar worked for Michigan State University (MSU) and the USA Gymnastics Olympic team. He worked for these two organizations for about twenty years as a doctor for athletes. He was a team physician for MSU and a member of the medical staff for USA Gymnastics. Over the course of his career he became well known and respected. Recently he has been accused by over 150 women of sexual abuse and been sentenced to the equivalent of life in prison (Vaidyanathan & Hughes, 2018).

One of the key players in bringing Nassar to justice was Kyle Stephens. She was the first of the women to testify against him. Her case was slightly different than most as she had not been one of his patients, but her family had been friends with him. She was abused in her home by the doctor, who denied it at the time making her parents believe he was innocent. She said that he “denied abusing her and had said that if she was ever really abused, she should remember to report it” (Vaidyanathan & Hughes, 2018). A few years later she was able to convince her parents that she had really been abused and began to take action against Nassar (Vaidyanathan & Hughes, 2018).

 Larry Nassar was well known to be a great doctor during his career, and thus many female athletes went to him. During the testimonies many of these athletes said they were “intimidated by his powerful status” and did not believe that they would be able to take an action against him (Vaidyanathan & Hughes, 2018). He would take advantage of his patients by convincing them that what he was doing was routine and just part of the treatment. Due to his reputation as a renowned doctor the patients would believe the lies he told them, and even questioned if they were even abused. One of the victims, Rachael Denhollander, said “when he went down there, I just told myself it was normal, that he knows what he's doing and don't be a baby” (Vaidyanathan & Hughes, 2018). Larry Nassar has since been sentenced to over one hundred and fifty years in prison (Levenson, 2018).

With this case coming to light questions are being asked as to how long this had been going on for and how he had been able to get away with it. Also, it has been found that reports had been filed against him previously, but nothing came of them, making people think that people at MSU and USA Gymnastics knew about the abuse and allowed it to continue (Vaidyanathan & Hughes, 2018). Due to this, pressure has been put on these organizations and several people in leadership positions have resigned from both organizations. Shortly afterward, the US Olympic Committee issued a statement apologizing for “failing to stop Nassar’s abuse and for its inadequate response at his trial” (Levenson, 2018). In response to her experience, Kyle Stephens is now spearheading a movement to increase awareness and education regarding sexual assault in order to help prevent it. She hopes to make the issue known, and has created several steps and is acting upon them to stop this problem. She calls for action and stated, “Every day we do nothing, we send a message to victims everywhere that their pain doesn’t matter, and that their lives are expendable. This cannot go on” (Stephens, 2018).

The key players in this leadership failure are Larry Nassar, Kyle Stephens, the organizations that employed Nassar, and Judge Aquilina. Larry Nassar is the leader who had the ethical failure. He abused his position as a well-known and respected leader to appeal to his self-interest at his followers’ expense. Kyle Stephens is a new transformative leader, who inspired other women to testify and is implementing a positive social change. She seeks to ensure that what happened to her never happens to someone again. The organizations that employed Nassar, MSU and USA Gymnastics, were irresponsible in dealing with reports of the Nassar’s abuse and therefore failed their duty to protect the followers.

They had received reports from the patients but did not follow through with them. Judge Aquilina presided over the case, and allowed all of the victims to have time to testify in court and share their story, making sure they all had a chance to be heard. She made a few uncommon choices as the judge of the trial.

She chose to let all the victims share their stories, as she felt this was the most she could do for them, and even offered personal advice and encouragement to the women as they testified (Levenson, 2018). When examining the failure of Nassar, it is important to look towards possible motivators for his actions. While this is a complex case and it is impossible to know Nassar’s true motivations, a good place to look is values, as they are the main guiders of human action (M. Waters, personal communication, 2018). Values can be split into two categories, terminal and instrumental values. Terminal values are end goals for a person, while instrumental values are ways to act that will help reach those end goals (Rokeach, 1979). These values are not typically thought of to be negative.

However, in examining the case of Nassar it appears his main terminal value is personal pleasure, and his instrumental values include intemperance and dishonesty. Values affect a person’s sense of right and wrong and may have been part of Nassar’s personal motivation for his actions that led to his ethical failure (Rokeach, 1979).

In addition to values, people make decisions based on their ethical perspectives. Pragmatism is an ethical perspective that focuses on making decisions “with an end or value in mind” (Johnson, 2018, p. 154).  Nassar’s actions seem to be self-centered, and he did not take into account how his actions would affect his followers. However, he did act in accordance to his values making him most closely align with the pragmatism ethical perspective outlined by John Dewey (Johnson, 2018).

There are many leadership problems to be found in Nassar’s case, but the three most prominent are poor focus, abuse of power, and toleration of unethical practice. As a leader it is important to take into account the followers’ needs, Nassar clearly did not do this. He failed to see past his self-interest, which shook his moral focus. Moral focus is a key component tomoral action and self-interest is a threat to moral focus as it makes individuals ignore moral norms (Johnson, 2018). Additionally, Nassar abused his power as a leader in a way that hurt his followers. Along with being a leader, an individual gains more power. This is how that individual is able to influence his or her followers (Johnson, 2018). This power can be in several different forms, most notably the five types of power listed by French and Raven. This power types are: expert power, referent power, legitimate power, coercive power, and reward power (French & Raven, 1959). The two that were most prominent with Nassar are referent power and expert power. He was known to be a fantastic doctor, one of the best, giving him expert power. Also, he was well known in the field and recommended to athletes by both MSU and USA gymnastics, providing him referent power (Vaidyanathan & Hughes, 2018).

While these two power types can be the foundation for good leadership, Nassar used them to his advantage to abuse people in need, acting in his own self-interest with no regard for his patients’ interest (Vaidyanathan & Hughes, 2018). His power was used to harm his followers, and he was unable to overcome the “shadow of power” that Johnson (2018) identifies (p. 6). Johnson (2018), also identifies common behaviors of leaders that abuse power: “deceit, constraint, coercion, selfishness, inequity, cruelty, disregard, deification” (p. 10). Nassar’s actions clearly fit with deceit, cruelty, disregard, and deification, or a feeling of superiority over followers (Johnson, 2018). These behaviors help identify Nassar as an intemperate, evil, and corrupt leader according to Kellerman’s types of bad leadership (Kellerman, 2004). Kellerman (2004), defines intemperate leadership as “leaders that lack self-control and are aided by followers who do not effectively intervene” (p. 95). Nassar’s intemperance was sexual in a nature and he lacked self-control for his lust. The followers who aided in his intemperate leadership were the people at MSU and in USA Gymnastics that did not take action when his abuse was reported to them. They enabled his habits by tolerating his unethical practices. In addition, they enabled it by trying to convince those that were against him that they were wrong; for example MSU told one of the victims that filed a report against Nassar that they “did not understand the difference between sexual assault anda medical procedure” (Levenson, 2018).  Nassar can also be identified as an evil leader, which Kellerman (2004) defines as:

The leader and at least some of the followers commit atrocities. They use pain as an instrument of power. The harm done to men, women, and children is severe rather than slight. The harm can be physical, psychological, or both. (p.191) At this time it is hard to determine if the followers of Nassar, people in MSU and US Gymnastics, have committed atrocities, as the case is just coming to light, Nassar himself definitely has committed some. The harm he has done to his followers has drastically affected them, with some saying they “no longer trust doctors or that they shrink from any physical touch” (Levenson, 2018). Nassar’s evil leadership also has some of the forms of evil, most evidently dreadful pleasure and deception, that Johnson (2018) identifies. Evil as dreadful pleasure occurs when an individual commits evil acts for their own personal enjoyment, which partly comes just from having power over the other (Johnson, 2018, p. 110). Nassar definitely enjoyed having power over his victims, and got pleasure from his abuse. In addition, Johnson (2018), identifies deception as a form of evil in which evil people lie to others to make them believe they are normal while they secretly perform evil acts (p. 112). Nassar was able to convince the organizations he worked for that he was a morally sound doctor, and tried to deceive the victims themselves into believing he did nothing wrong to them. The final type of bad leadership that clearly applies to Nassar is corrupt leadership. Kellerman (2004), defines this as “the leader and at least some followers lie, cheat, or steal. To a degree that exceeds the norm, they put self-interest ahead of the public interest” (p. 147). Larry Nassar lied to his patients and the organizations that hired him. He also put his interests above those of others. It is uncertain to what degree his followers in the corresponding organizations were corrupt at this time.

There are several ways this situation could have been avoided. First, Nassar could have been more of a servant leader. Servant leadership focuses on the followers and their needs (Patterson, 2003). Servant leadership incorporates apagao love, this means the leader acts with love towards his or her followers. Acting with love means considering people as “a total person -- one with needs, wants, and desires” (Patterson, 2003, p. 3). Instead Nassar thought of his followers not as total people but as followers in a moreoutdated view. Rost (1995), describes this old view as considering followers to be unable to act on their own, and “willing to let others take control of their lives” (p. 190). As such he did not help his followers, while a leader who used love in their leadership would have been able to be “emotionally, physically, and spiritually present” for those following him or her (Ferch & Mitchell, 2001, p. 70). Secondly, the people in positions of authority at MSU and USA Gymnastics could have helped the situation by being more effective followers. Effective followers are critical of leaders, provide feedback, and work to ensure the organization acts responsibly (Kelley, 1995).

These people could have listen to the reports the athletes made against Nassar. Instead they ignored them, or told the victims they were wrong. This action left the athletes looking for direction as they tried all options in their repertoire and the formal authority in the situation was not providing direction (Gladwell, 2005). Third, Nassar could have used a different ethical perspective when considering his actions as a doctor. He could have looked to Kant’s categorical imperative, which involves trying to always make the right, “duty-bound” decision (Johnson, 2018, p. 149). The duty of a doctor is clear, to help one’s patients recover in the best way possible, and had Nassar thought to follow this duty in his decisions he would not have harmed his patients. Alternatively, he could have used a utilitarian perspective, which seeks to do the most good for the largest group possible. As a doctor with the number of patients he saw it would have been easy to do good for a large number of them, instead he did not overcome his twisted personal interests and damaged the patients. Using a utilitarian perspective he could have seen that working against his personal interests was in the best interest of his followers (Johnson, 2018).From the fallout of this failure some new transformative leadership has begun. One large contributor to his new leadership is Judge Aquilina. She allowed everyone affected by this failure a chance to have their voice heard in the courtroom, something that is not a common occurrence in court trials (Levenson, 2018). This started with some sharing their stories, which in turn inspired many more to share their stories. Sharing their stories helped them realize they were not alone, they began to call themselves an “army of survivors” (Levenson, 2018). As a leader creating a holding environment is important to fostering growth, physical, psychological, or emotional (S. Chace, personal communication, 2017).

Judge Aquilina was able to use her position as a formal authority to create a holding environment that made the victims feel safe and welcome to share their stories. Many did not think they would ever be able to share their stories, and talked afterwards of the “strength they had gained from the others who had spoken in court” (Vaidyanathan & Hughes, 2018). Judge Aquilina was able to act as a “therapist, advocate, and friend to the women,” because of this they were able to cultivate positive change within themselves, and also it laid the foundation for Kyle Stephens to begin her leadership (Vaidyanathan & Hughes, 2018). Kyle Stephens was the first to speak against Nassar in the courtroom. Her story inspired many others to testify. This inspiration helped create a group of “sisterhood” and “army of survivors” for the victims (Stephens, 2018). The creation of a support group for the survivors gave them strength to overcome their fears and testify, it also reinforced the feeling of belonging and minimize the idea that they were alone. This is a clear positive influence enacted on the entire group, and that positive effect is also applied to the leader, Kyle, from the group.

This two-way positive influence is an example of transforming leadership. Transforming leadership was defined by James MacGregor Burns in 1978 as a process in which “the leader and followers raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality” (p. 20). Transforming leadership also is seen when a leader is making a positive social change. Kyle Stephens is now heading a movement to minimize sexual abuse in the United States. She calls for people to become more willing to talk about sexual abuse prevention, saying “our unwillingness to shatter the stigma surrounding sexual exploitation keeps us from realizing the immensity of the problem and the imminent danger to those we love” (Stephens, 2018). In addition, Stephens calls for people to educate each other about sexual abuse prevention and seek change in their communities’ policy. She hopes to bring this issue to the attention of the political leadership of the United States, by having elected officials implement policies regarding sexual-abuse prevention, saying that “anyone who doesn’t see remedying this problem as a priority is unfit to lead our country” (Stephens, 2018).

Another area for new leadership has opened from this situation. The leadership positions of MSU and USA Gymnastics have emptied as most of the position holders have resigned after the case became public (Vaidyanathan & Hughes, 2018). This provides an opportunity for new people to step up and create a positive change, hopefully the new leaders will listen to some of Stephens’s advice and listen to reports that are made against employees.

Also, this new leadership will have the chance to stop the toleration of unethical practices, and make the organizations act responsibly. Larry Nassar committed atrocities against many women, and as a result was a terrible leader. He was a leader who failed ethically, and in turn caused his followers severe pain. He is now serving a life sentence in prison, and many of the people that aided him have resigned from their positions (Vaidyanathan & Hughes, 2018). However, this awful failure has provided a chance for some new positive leadership, found in Kyle Stephens’s transforming leadership. This new leadership will hopefully stop future failures similar to the case of Larry Nassar.

Who Bears Greater Responsibility when Choosing to have an Abortion?

Contrasting Di Nucci’s concept of responsibility to abort, Harris introduced a so-called responsibility to bear. He argues that there are cases when abortion would mean that woman is directly harming the man. The term wrongful harm is here used for violating father’s autonomy and morally legitimate interest in self-determination. In his work, Harris has used five scenarios to demonstrate both situations in which abortion would and would not harm the man’s legitimate interests. The first two cases are about cases when abortion is not violating the man’s autonomy, and the latter three show situations where clear violations have occurred. These scenarios essentially differ and they include cases of rape, casual sex, negligence, deceit and malice.

According to Harris, procreation is a morally legitimate interest but the fulfilment of this interest is conditioned by the requirement that men respect the autonomy of women in this regard. In other words, the foetus must be a result of pursuing a legitimate interest in procreation in a morally legitimate way. These claims directly brings us to the conclusion that, if foetus occurs as a result of rape or casual sexual relationship, it is not an object of a legitimate interest for the man, therefore, having an abortion would not harm his interests, since it, in fact, does not exist. In this case, the foetus would only be his in a biological sense. But he also emphasises that if the woman in this case would decide to keep it, she would not harm the man’s autonomy, regardless of his wishes, as it is not a matter of his legitimate interest. The reasons why Harris claims so in the case of rape is that, when forcing to woman into an intercourse, he did not take into consideration her autonomy, and therefore, the requirement of reciprocity is lacking.

This reasoning is intertwined in the latter three cases, where Harris used examples of married couples, where the wives were deceiving the husband. The husbands wanted to become a parent, while the wives were not interested in this role. Harris argues here that, by not sharing their views and opinion of becoming mothers, and misleading their husbands that they would become father throughout the marriage, constitutes morally impermissible abortion. Further in the scenarios, they become pregnant and decide to abort, but the relevant point here is just by acting in this deceiving manner, the wives already harmed their interest in procreation. Sherain on this matter claims that there are fathers who want to have children and are prepared to take on all responsibilities that fatherhood brings with it, and that law should also take their interests into consideration, as well as the mothers. Furthermore, he argues that in a situation where the father is willing to bear all the burden of parenthood himself with no expectance from the mother to bear any of it, the state should cofer a veto over abortion on the theory the man's right to raise his own child is important enough to justify the burdens of coerced pregnancy for the woman.

He also relies on another source that claims that such a husband 'is no longer an outsider but rather part of a team, which does seem to entitle him to follow the entire procedure through from beginning to end.

To conclude on Harris’ reasoning, an abortion is morally impermissible in this case:

When a man has satisfied the requirements of autonomy in regard to the interest. In procreation both in regard to himself and to his sexual partner. The woman has a prima facie obligation to him not to harm the fetus. And unless there is some countervening moral consideration to override. This prima facie obligation, the abortion of the fetus is morally impermissible.

In addition to this, I will add that, from my point of view, this reasoning goes vice-versa. If the intention for procreation is shared by both the wife. And the husband, while the husband is secretly wishing not to become a father. Then he cannot expect nor demand the wife to abort in case of pregnancy. As it would morally impermissible to her right to self-determination. As a mother to abort, especially if we take into account the women's reproductive biological clock.

From my childhood, I am acquainted with the legal sector, because my parents are government officials serving in the Bangladesh Supreme Court. My familiarity with the legal arena and my inner interest to work with the law and justice system are motivated me to get LL.M. degree.

During my university coursework, my advocacy skill and my ability to think critically were observed by my professors and thereby, they insisted me to attend in the moot court competition, seminars and public speaking activities. Moreover, I am experienced in working with the marginalized people. At that time, I, scrutinizing the contemporary legal and ethical questions in various fields, have experienced that people are deprived of getting proper remedy for intricate legal system. Moreover, I conducted research on several legal problems in the contemporary court system, which enhanced my prudence on different pragmatic issues relating to human rights, constitutional law and legal ethics. At present, I am working as a legal assistant and researcher, where I am assigned to carry out a number of cases on constitutional law and human rights law. Practically, I feel that the present level of legal skill and knowledge of mine have enabled me to understand and to apply the law effectively.

I am enormously eager to do research work on international human rights law, more specifically on the issue relating to the child abortion, though I am fond of working on any legal issues that can contribute to the world legal policy.

However, there are no international norms, which have directly directed the safety mechanism to protect prenatal life from immoral anti-life acts. For ensuring medical, social and economical interest, some regional authorities, by introducing liberalized women’s reproductive health laws, attempt to minimize this feasible conflict on human rights of the sinless antenatal children and the women and allow the therapeutic abortion in restricted circumstances only for the welfare of the women’s life. Greenleaf in ‘The Servant as Leader’, an essay that he 1st published in 1970.

Jayland’s grades were all B’s, but science, where he received an A+. Jayland struggles with independent reading and spelling and is below grade level in both areas.

Jayland also struggles with writing legibly and his work is often messy, unorganized, and incomplete. It takes Jayland a substantial amount of time compared to his peers to accomplish written assignments if it is high quality when completed. Jayland exhibits average/superior cognitive abilities even though the Woodcock-Johnson IV shows Jayland at an equivalent to grade 6.5 in basic reading skills and an equivalent to grade 9.6 in written expression. When we discuss ‘students’ and ‘learners’ we automatically assume to be talking about the average adolescent, backpacks tightly strapped to both shoulders, lunchbox in hand, ready to start another hard day of education and awkward social interactions at the local public school. However, what about the adults who have put a hiatus on their education for a few years, and then decide to pick it back up. Who is the adult learner?

Adult learners are a diverse group,”usually 25 and older…” (pierce.edu) with a wide range of educational and cultural backgrounds, adult responsibilities and job experiences. They typically do not follow the traditional pattern of enrolling in postsecondary education immediately after high school…”They’ve delayed entering college for at least one year following high school…” (pierce.edu). They return to school for a wide range reasons, to stay competitive in the workplace, prepare for a career change, or perhaps to raise their IQ by a few points. Whatever the reasoning, they usually study on a part-time basis, taking one or two courses a term while maintaining work and family responsibilities, which is the biggest difference between adolescent and adult learners.

Our society functions through the tough burdens of being an adult, and the duties they carry out everyday. Adult learners face many challenges that do not concern young learners. Through my research I investigated the different, detailed aspects behind adult learners and the common struggles they face by trying to juggle their list of tasks apart of learning. Along with my research, three adult learners were interviewed and observed in order to answer what kind of specific hardships they independently accept and how they use their age and wisdom to their learning advantage.

Due to my status as being a traditional learner, I hold the position of an outsider, making it crucial that I ensure my full comprehension of the subjects at hand before interviewing by furthering my grasp of the general idea of adult learners, although each of my subjects are unique.

Andragogy is a learning theory that assists with identifying adult learners. Malcolm Knowles defines andragogy as “the art of helping adult learners” (elearningindustry.com). The andragogical model shows that adult learners: 1) are self-directed; 2) enter educational programs with a great diversity of experience; 3) become ready to learn when they experience a need to know or do something; 4) are life-centered, task centered or problem-centered; and 5) are motivated by internal self-esteem, recognition, better quality of life and self-actualization.

There are many common misconceptions about adult learners, one of them being that adult learners need a lot of assistance and guidance. As this may be the case for some students, most adult learners strive through means of self-directed learning. Self-directed learning allows students to take control of their own educational experiences, which pushes them to act in unique ways that help to maintain their personal motivation levels (eleducation.org).

It is also important to evaluate the site of the subculture. I conducted my research at AWC, a community college that I attend part time. Although adult learners take up the highest population of elearners (cael.org), it would make perfect sense for adult learners to take up a couple real life community college courses instead of online or at a university. In addition to misconceptions about adult learners, there are plenty of preconceived notions about community colleges as well. A great majority views community college as an easier path than a standard university, and only people who did not get accepted to universities settle for community college. Thus, it can be speculated that adult learners may face plenty of stigma and bias.

A key characteristic distinguishing reentry adults from other college students is the high likelihood that they are juggling other life roles while attending school, including those of worker, spouse or partner, parent, caregiver, and community member. These roles may be assets, both through the social supports they provide and through the rich life experiences that may help adult learners make meaning of theoretical constructs that may be purely abstract to younger learners. Yet more often, these multiple roles present challenges in students’ allocation of time for both academic study and participation in campus-based organizations and activities. A 2003 NCES report titled Work First, Study Second indicated that at least 56 percent of students over age twenty-four who were included in the 1999–2000 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study saw themselves as workers first and students second, while 26 percent identified themselves as students who work. Only 18 percent did not work while enrolled (Berker and Horn 2003, 5). This report also noted that those students who considered themselves employees first were also more likely to be married, leaving them with at least three life roles to manage while attending school; this group was also less likely to complete a degree in six years.

Reentry adults” appear to be a student population that is here to stay. Increasingly, higher education institutions have attempted to create programs and services that are responsive to adults’ life and learning preferences. This effort has challenged college faculty and administrators to think beyond traditional ways of teaching and delivering educational programs. A large number of institutions or program units have a long history of adaptation to the adult learner student population.

Research and knowledge about adult learners is important in order to create suggestions for improving adult learning now and in the future. were around more financial investment, more adult education opportunities, as well as more flexible provision (in terms of delivery and times) to suit those with in work and with complex circumstances. Others suggested that the value of learning for personal pleasure should be promoted as it can have a significant impact in terms of wellbeing.

The aim of the study was to scope the need, reach and areas for policy and practice development for adult education concerning disadvantaged adults. Four key research questions emerged: Why did you decide to go back to school/what was your goal? What are the difficulties about being an adult learner? How do you use your age and wisdom to your advantage when going to school? How does going back to school affect your current job?

Aside from researching information, I collected evidence by interviewing two adult learners to get first hand accounts about the life and hardships of an adult learner. By drawing on these two varied primary sources, the aim has been to develop a full picture of the struggles related to adult education for individuals. Research on adult learners help employers and communities focus on what works well and what needs to be improved to make best use of the resources available for adult education, particularly in addressing the needs of those most disadvantaged in our society.

Based on the conducted research and observations, the idea that adult learners deal with issues that do not concern the traditional student is supported. In one of my college classes I was able to conduct an interview with Matilda Espinoza, a single mother of two. My other subject is Jamie Dungeon, a 21-year old man. Both subjects have taken a break from school for several years, but ultimately decided to return. I was able to compare their accounts with the information gathered from online sources to determine the truth about adult learners.

One quick observation I noticed with the two was that they were much more organized and prepared for class than anyone else, including myself. Each of them had their computers handy, as well as any additional materials needed. They also did not constantly check their phones or focused on anything besides the task at hand. It was interesting to notice the juxtaposition between the clearly bored, juvenile students and the adults, who appeared almost starving for new knowledge.

Matilda shared that her reasoning behind furthering her education career was motivated by her desire to give her children a more comfortable life. She states, “I’m hoping to build up my resume, develop new skills, apply for higher paying jobs, and hopefully by the end I’ll be able to provide my family with a more stable income.” This confirms the idea that many adult learners go back to school to enhance their quality of life. However, Jaime’s motives are quite different. He explained that he took a couple “block” years to do some self discover and soul searching before jumping right back into school again. He asserted that he would not consider himself trying to elevate his current situation by going to school again because continuing his education was always apart of his plan- just not on everyone else’s timeline.

Both of them share similar difficulties by being an adult learner. One challenge they share is struggling to make ends meet and pass their classes at the same time. Jaime shares, “I have to support myself and drive up here for two hour long classes at the same time. Sometimes it feels like there isn’t enough time in the day, and rent isn’t cheap.” Both subjects have to find time to take care of their responsibilities. By speaking to Matilda about her struggles with being a mom and a student, it was made clear that her top priority does not lie in being returned student, but in being mom. The same is true about many adult learners. As seriously as they take their education, it’s difficult to put it ahead of the rest of their livelihood.

Jaime and Matilda both found having a job and going to school a challenge, but they have adapted and gotten more comfortable with their busy schedules. “...it’s..it’s tough, but managing multiple aspects of my life has taught me to keep organized, focus on the task at hand, and work as efficiently as possible.” Just as my research suggests, adult learners are proven to be very driven and task-oriented.

Both subjects agreed that attending university was not an option for them given their financial status. Matilda’s view on community college is that the education is just as good as any, if not better because of the smaller class sizes. She proudly took out the new computer she bought herself with the money she wasn’t “shoveling over to those fancy colleges.”

Adult learners show advanced time managed skills. Diligence and self-discipline when it comes to schooling. One major difference between adult learners. And traditional learners, especially children, is that one is motivated by self-determination and future goals. While the other is most likely required to attend by the government. “As I’ve grown older, I stopped focusing on the distractions. The time I spent away from school really matured me. My time invested at school is strictly goal oriented,” Jaime shared. Matilda wholeheartedly agreed. She described how she spent her time at school back when it was free. And how much more of a developed and effective learner she is now that she’s older, “I did not understand the importance of school. Now that I do, I don’t look at classes as a chore anymore.” With age comes with more realistic world views along with distinguishing what’s important and what is not.

Several conclusions can be made based on the research and interviews conducted. It is no doubt that adult learners are plagued with two major hardships; school and life responsibilities and cost, among many others. Except unlike children, adult learners are much better at weighing the importance of school. Unlike children, adult learners already have a set of values and preconceptions about the world they live in. Adult learners are actively involved in the learning process such that they make choices relevant to their learning objectives.

Learning as the Key to Personal Development

I chose to swallow the red pill, spiraling deep into our family’s rabbit hole. I wanted to see these strangers with my own eyes, study their expressions, and decipher the truth for myself. As the door swung open, they were gazing back at me, this gathering of impeccably dressed, beautiful, prestigious people. A family, including four young adults, breathing luxury and comfort from every pore, walking with ease through the high-ceilinged rooms of a mansion illuminated by crystal chandeliers, choosing from a display of sumptuous foods and drinks, clearly orchestrated by household assistants. It was the polar opposite to my own dilapidated home, living with my divorcee mom and mildly-autistic brother, relying on government support, and working after school so we could eat more than peanut butter. I am 19 years when I discover the existence or my father's second family and meet my siblings for the first time. I am speechless.

My relationship with my father had always been superficial: no more than a monthly dinner at Olive Garden. My mother was very narrow-minded, limiting the capacity of my thinking and downplaying the importance of schooling. I came to realize for myself that education was the most likely vehicle to escape my past and improve the probability of a better future. Accepting the reality of my surroundings, I made a commitment to learning as the key to self-improvement, propelling my forward momentum in life. (Are these two sentences repetitive?)

The process of breaking away from the family I grew up with to accept a scholarship at the local state university, sleeping in my car to save on rent, while juggling athletics, multiple jobs, and an honors curriculum, pushed me to my limits. This pressure allowed me to hyper-focus on my education, hoping the temporary sacrifices would one day pay off. Physics and mathematics expanded my mind and showed me that there was a universe far greater than I had imagined. I had no idea that would include an entire second family.

Becoming more familiar with my father's second family provided exposure to his business and all he had accomplished throughout his career. I became incessantly interested in that world and developed a dream to one day work together. Joining his business was a crowning moment, but I soon realized I needed to keep on my path of education, this time for an MBA with a global focus to prepare for life’s next step.

Adversity taught me the importance of continually moving forward, with one eye set on the future and the other reflecting on the past. This ensures you don't become enslaved to habit, glamour, adulation, success, not to mention family influence or prestige. The decision to embrace a second family, rather than allowing emotions to cloud my thinking, taught me how to welcome the unknown, remain open-minded, and establish common ties that connect human beings. Constantly re-evaluating the world through new lenses accelerated my growth as an entrepreneur and individual. As the world continues to evolve and cultures are blended together, this is what will be expected of our future global business leaders.

When one realizes his goals, he may share it with the rest of the people, or use it in his company, good communication skills do play a very significant role. When one needs to enhance his confidence, he needs to work out to be able to more efficient and effective in dealing with colleagues, classmates, customers, supervisors and subordinates. One also needs to realize his desires in his own terms enhance performance and feel better about himself. He also needs to clearly communicate and handle issues more efficaciously . The essence of communication is basically to understand and be understood openly. The varying backgrounds and personalities as well as varying points of view may bring challenges in understanding people and things. If one improves his communication skills he stands to receive wide benefits. Excellent communication skills possess the following capabilities.

An efficient and effective leader must bear good people skills. His colleagues and employees should feel comfortable presenting you with problems they encounter and should not be afraid or feel intimidated from your actions. Taking time to ask for your colleagues' opinion and carefully listening to the viewpoint of every person demonstrates that you actually respect them. Colleagues also appreciate the little things, like paying them a commendation for perfectly done.

Performing periodic assessment of your individual skills can assist one in ensuring that competencies are actually at the level they should be. If the profession necessitate knowledge that does not change too often and quickly, performing this particular assessment annually is adequate. In the field that is rapidly changing and where skills are continuously required to keep up with these changes in technology, one needs to accomplish this evaluation every few weeks or months so as to keep up-to-date.

A good leader will never stop learning and will always want to enhance his set of skills. Making a list of specific areas that one needs to enhance, like acquiring a particular set of skills or enhancing the existing abilities can assist one become more well-rounded and valuable leader. After identifying the areas for improvement, one needs to go ahead and come up with ways of attaining this knowledge.

Conclusion

Personal development plan extends beyond academic fulfillment and is more significantly a plan that explains something about the entire person, not just how perfect you were confining yourself in a quite library corner and writing essays. The effectiveness of personal development planning depends on the kind of tools to use. Having good personal skills in communication is important in personal growth and career development.

There is need to pay keen interest on how to record evidence, thoughts and achievements of your activities and also the conversation with your tutors together with your action plans. Inspiring and encouraging and team members to achieve their own individual goals and attain their potential can assist one become a better leader. Including every person in planning goals of the team for the future basically makes them feel valued group members and assist in getting them excited for new upcoming projects.

Education is the Fundamental Basis of Personal Development

I have collected near one-hundred books in the past ten years. Every spine holds a different story, all of which have dared me to grow as an exercise in perseverance. The authors have taught me to empathize with their characters, and given me the offer to understand them. This has done nothing but help me in my various international education environments and my surrounding of people from all over the world.

Reading has also taught me to write, and I feel like a better writer, as I’m constantly surrounding myself with works from people who are better than me. At the age of thirteen, I spent nearly a year writing a fictional novel that has now achieved a high place on my shelf, this is one of my proudest achievements. Later on, I also came to win a national competition of my short story entries with first place in the capital, and third place in Jordan, Middle East.

With empathy comes to action, and that is why in sixth grade I came up with the idea to teach English to first graders in my school, as my term project. I did this after my school lessons, for an hour every week for a month, this experience taught me tolerance. Furthermore, In eighth grade, I chose to do a seven-week internship at a kindergarten near my home in Hellerup.

Here I learned to cooperate with the children and reflect on the environment I grew up in myself. I was born and raised in Denmark, with a combination of Danish, English, and Arabic spoken around me. Therefore, living in countries where each of the languages was the mother tongue, Denmark, Canada, and Jordan, I’ve prospered a greater appreciation for the subtle aspects of culture and society. Throughout my education, I’ve developed creativity, critical thinking skills, and open-mindedness, all of which will be useful in university and for the rest of my life. I aim to pursue a career in law because it is a vital component in the successful integration of people.

I believe that education is the fundamental basis of growth, it is the building block of greater things to come. In seventh grade, I was taught that to change the world, you have to do it by steps. First, you improve yourself, then your community, your country, and lastly the globe. I’m still working on bettering myself, and I hope that that will be with the help of Birkerød Gymnasium.

The Main Disadvantages of Traditional Classes in Comparison with Online

Graduate high school and then go to college is how universities planned it to work way back when. “For decades many large universities provided a traditional education to unmarried students who lived in dormitories and stayed a full four years.” (Giczkowski) In these four years, young and non-experienced students would take two years of general education with the idea that the students would be well rounded and ideal employees. That is not the case anymore. “The adult population is expected to be the fastest growing segment of higher education and, in fact, older students will become the majority.” (Galusha) Universities need to adapt to the new wave of students who are adult learners by eliminating or decreasing the general education requirements and learning what adults need to succeed. General Education requirements are intended to teach students all about the “real” world, and are fashioned as introductions to intellectual life. That sounds wonderful; however, most traditional students take the easiest general education classes that will count towards their degree credits. If they go to class at all, they pay attention just enough to pass the class.

This may be the case for traditional students but not for adult learners who are more than likely not even on campus. The Indiana University Center survey findings revealed a higher level of nontraditional adult student participation than traditional-age students. • 80% of nontraditional adult learners asked questions in class or contributed to discussions, while only 72% of traditional-age students did so. • 61% of the nontraditional adult students prepared two or more drafts of papers and assignments, while only 40% of traditional-age students complete one draft. • Only 13% of nontraditional adult learners came to class unprepared with assignments uncompleted; however, 24% of traditional-age students were coming to class unprepared with incomplete assignments.

(Wyatt) An adult learner has typically had enough life experience to make them well rounded so general education classes should not be required or at the very least, cut back. An adult learner is more than likely going to school because they haven’t before, and need a degree to move up in their current career or, are switching careers. Whatever the case is, an adult learner probably has a few other things going on in their life other than school; they are working full time, have kids, running a household and now need to think about school assignments. The requirement of all the extra general education classes makes that four-year degree take a lot longer than that. An example of the difficulties adult learners face is my story: I work at the University of Minnesota in Human Resources. I am at a point in my career that I need a degree in addition to my experience to advance. Having never been to school after high school, here I am, a 38year old wife and mom of three boys working forty hours a week and going back to school. I must continue working full time, so my only option is to take classes online. A Bachelor of Science in Management is a 120 credit degree, without general education classes. The general education requirements consist of ten goal areas with each goal needing anywhere from three to nine credits. While some classes cross goal areas, most do not. It is not realistic for me to take a full twelve credits each semester which means that my four-year degree is going to take me five years to complete including taking classes in the summer. This is daunting and makes it very hard to stay motivated and engaged. Maybe if the general education classes seemed more relevant to the degree. It would be more understandable, but when classes such as Geology, Ancient to 17th Century World Literature and Introductory Physics are required for a business management degree, it is hard to understand how those classes help someone who wants to work in Human Resources at a higher education institute.

An employer is not going to be going through a prospective employee’s class schedule to see what classes they took when they earned their degree and, if they did and saw Geology, that is not going to increase my chance of getting that human resources position unless it was in the College of Environmental Sciences. I can appreciate there is something gained by learning new things. Such as concentration and learning to pay attention to things that may not really be important to you or working on collaboration by working with classmates on assignments. Maybe the answer is not to eliminate the general education classes completely but to reduce the number of general education credits needed for a degree or revamp them, taking into consideration the adult learners. Universities should review their current general education requirements and look at who their students are, focusing on the adult learners since they are more than likely the majority this day in age. “Planning effective programs and services and helping adult learners succeed require a clear understanding of adult learners’ needs and expectations and how adults learn.” (Shi) One change could be for higher education institutes with a large adult population to acknowledge that adult students are at a different developmental stage and may best be served by a distinct set of requirements suitable for them.(Giczkowski) Outside of altering the general education requirements, an answer could be putting an age limit out there, such as a Freshman is 35 years of age or older, they are not required to take as many general education credits, especially ones that do not pertain to their current degree.

This goes along with the thought process that a 35-year-old has had many more years of life and work experience and is already well rounded. Another thought is adult learners who are employees at the University. And are taking classes towards a degree that is beneficial to their position or department. Would not have to meet any of the general education requirements. The thought behind this is that the University already knows what kind of employee. They have and if they are willing to put the funds forward to send that person to school, they want to keep them. This would also make for a happier and a more productive employee sooner since the degree would be earned faster. As an extra benefit, it would save the University money in tuition. In her article Research in Higher Education Vol. 3 No. 3, Betsy Suddareth reviewed Purdue University’s study to investigate the impact of general education requirements. The longitudinal study followed experimental groups and control groups through their college careers and, also, continuing after graduation. “The conclusion was that both the academic data and the questionnaire data indicate that the experimental group was successful during the first two years. If the succeeding college and post-college years demonstrate similar characteristics, it would appear that some reduction or elimination of general requirements would not dilute the B.A. degree and would make students feel that the university is concerned about them.” (Suddareth) One other issue that comes into play with all of this is taking into consideration that a good majority of adult students are long distance learners. Long distance learners are students who do not physically attend class.

They are enrolled in online classes. This can be very difficult, since taking an online class out of another campus. That is 100 miles away does not make it very easy to meet with the instructor or counselor or anybody at the school. If a higher education institute is going to offer online degrees. And they have multiple campuses, they should offer this option at each one of their campuses. This does not necessarily come into play. When talking about general education. However, it does when universities are thinking about focusing on adult learners and what they need to succeed. Something needs to be done to help adult learners achieve their end goal sooner. Going back to the thought that employers want well rounded employees, an adult learner would be the best candidate. They are already well rounded with so many years of work experience under their belt and now they would have a degree to match it. Employers want the piece of paper these days that says that someone. Is a subject matter expert in the field they went to school for, not in Geology and 17th century writing.

Many factors can affect the growth and development of a 2-month-old such as prenatal health, parental attitudes, genetics, congenital anomalies, intrauterine environment, culture, nutrition, and support (Hockenberry et al., 2017). Nonetheless, there are certain progressions and milestones that an infant should achieve by the end of their second month of life. Regarding physical development, most research did not reveal a huge difference in gender but mentioned babies grow at different rates (Hockenberry et al., 2017 & Murray et al., 2019). The average FOC of a 2-month-old increases 2 cm a month during the first 3 months of life bringing the FOC to approximately 36- 42 cm (Hockenberry et al., 2017 & Murray et al., 2019). The average length of a 2-month-old is 53- 58 cm and the average weight is 9 lb. and 8 oz.- 12 lb. 13 oz. ((Hockenberry et al., 2017, KidsHealth for Nemours, 2019, & & Murray et al., 2019).

Health care providers use milestones for measurement of growth and development because as mentioned, it provides information about the overall health of the infant. By 2 months of age, an infant should achieve certain developmental milestones. Two gross motor skills that are conquered are a decrease in head lag when sitting and raising head while in the prone position (Hockenberry et al., 2017). Two fine motor developments are the infant is able to open hands and exhibit a decline in the grasp reflex (Hockenberry et al., 2017). Two social skills that should be demonstrated are being able to focus attention on whoever is speaking and smiling during interactions (Walter, 2016 & Hockenberry et al., 2017). Lastly, 2 verbal skills a 2-month-old should display are cooing and producing distinctive cries based on needs or wants (Walter, 2016 & Hockenberry et al., 2017).

Theoretical foundations of personality development for this age group concentrates on senses, comfort, and the beginning of cognitive growth. The first psychosocial developmental stage Erickson focus on deals with trust, or due to negative experiences, mistrust. During this stage of psychosocial development, the infant is extremely dependent on caregivers. Taking this into consideration, basic needs must be met, such as being provided consistent and loving care to develop a healthy personality (Hockenberry et al., 2017). If not, conflict may develop and mistrust will remain a problem (Hockenberry et al., 2017). Piaget theoretical development centers more on intelligence than personality. Cognitive skills develop through adaptions to the environment and experiences (Hockenberry et al., 2017). A 2-month-old is in the sensorimotor stage of growth. At this stage, senses such as vision, taste, sound, movement, and hearing are the main focus. Through sensations, the infant learns to achieve certain task, develop a sense of self, manipulate objects, and become aware of object permanence (Hockenberry et al., 2017). At 2 months of age, the infant is not cognitively able to achieve all aspects of the sensorimotor stage, but this stage should be accomplished by 2 years of age (Hockenberry et al., 2017). Additionally, in this ongoing process of development, the infant finds pleasure in social affective and sense-pleasure play. During social affective play, the infant develops relationships with others through touch, smiling, and cooing (i.e. caregiver smiles and the infant reciprocates action) (Hockenberry et al., 2017). Regarding sense-pleasure play, attention is on environment stimulus such as playmat with activities (i.e infant kicks soft keyboard on mat and it plays music).

As mentioned, during this stage, an infant is highly reliant on its caregiver for all needs. Stimulation is a contributing factor for healthy development but nutrition is one of the most important factors that strongly influence overall wellbeing (Hockenberry et al., 2017) During this age, the infant should exclusively rely on breast milk, iron fortified formula, or a combination of breastmilk and formula. Breast milk contains most of the minerals and vitamins that are needed for growth while also providing additional protections for infections due to antibodies passed from the mother (KidsHealth from Nemours, 2018). Formula is a nutritious supplement that provides most minerals and vitamins (KidsHealth from Nemours, 2018). There is no specific amount each infant should eat but feedings should be on demand with the infant controlling how much he or she would like to feed and with time, appetite will increase (KidsHealth from Nemours, 2018). Despite individual differences, an average 2-month-old will eat between 4-5 oz per feeding with the average of 6-8 feedings per day (KidsHealth for Nemours, 2018). Sleep is also essential because it also contributes to health. Hockenberry et al. (2017) states that a 2-month-old sleeps around 15 hours a day with individual varying between 10- 20 hours a day. With nutrition and sleep, cognitive and motor skills mature and advance.

At 2 months of age, the infant does not have the cognitive capability to understand discipline and cause and effect relationships, so it is extremely difficult to discipline at this age. Instead of focusing on discipline and behavior correction, attention should be given to providing basic needs such as love, security, food, and comfort (Hockenberry et al., 2017). With the above contributions to growth and development, a 2-month-old can achieve milestones and developed into a healthy human being.
