Reformer during the Civil War
Dorothea lynde dix was an army nurse, activist, teacher and a reformer during the civil war. She opened a school for kids. She was also known from helping the mentally ill during and after the war. She trained other women to be nurse. She went through a lot as a child. She grew up in a family where her mother was going through depression and her father was abusive. She did not want others to go through that as well. She began Sunday school class in the east Cambridge, Massachusetts imprison. She was stunned by the conditions she found there. There was no warmth, since authorities contended that mentally ill people couldn’t feel the cool and would consume themselves and the building in the event that they were given any wellspring of warmth. Dix went through a year visiting each prison in Massachusetts. She found that rationally sick were routinely secured away correctional facilities or in their families’ lofts. She composed letters of dissent and shock to the neighborhood specialists that were distributed in the nearby papers.
She did not like that fact that the mentally ill people were kept in prison where they were always beaten up. She though mentally ill people were seen as criminals because people were not that aware in the past. She stepped up to make sure they don’t go through what they go through. Dorothea did numerous investigations for the treatment and what causes it. She went through the following 40 years of her life archiving maltreatment of mental patients all through the united states. She effectively impelled administrative changes in 15 states and supervised the foundation of 32 mental healing centers. There were just 13 mental facilities when dix started her work in 1843, yet by 1880 there were 123. In 1844, she helped to establish therapeutic administers of the American foundation for the insane, a milestone association in the field of psychiatry. Dix did not bolster the ladies’ rights or abolitionist development and contended that it was tricky to ask our southern compatriots to break the obligations of the slave and offer him free while here we hold men in cells and chains and in detainment facilities then basically in light of the fact that their psyches are obscured. Dix likewise proposed changes in jail conditions in her 1845 book. A new hospital was built for the mentally ill after she made a report to the government. All what she did, helped create many new institutions across the united states and in Europe as well.
I chose to write about Dorotha dix because she is an inspiration to me. From what I have studied about her, she loved her job and she was passionate about it. I am planning on being a nurse and she inspires me to be a good nurse. The fact that nurses back then weren’t getting paid that much like now, but she still did so much without excepting anything in return. She was not getting paid, but she still worked as a nurse to the army. She put herself in their position and helped.

Anti-Slavery Civil War
Ibn Fattoumas journey is a journey that partakes in the unimaginable struggles of both existential and intellectual levels as the character attempts to determine the meaning of life in relation to him himself. The Journey of Ibn Fattouma revolves around the findings of a well organized society with freedom of religion while also partaking in answering the characters own personal essential struggles. While Conference of the Birds is about the journey of 30 birds, led by a hoopoe, whom he and the birds travel through the seven valleys. Each and every one of these seven valleys taught a different moral. By the end of the last valley, those who are left, their light is expressed and they are at once at peace, becoming one with themselves finding that they are in search of the Simurgh. Hence with both of these stories we can understand that the poem the Conference of the Birds is about being one with god and how he should be your primary concern when communicating with the world. While Ibn Fattouma is on a journey in search of a society free of religion.
With an understanding between The Journey of Ibn Fattouma and Conference of the Birds, a difference between the two can be found. There can be an understanding that Conference of the Birds is the connection between one with god and enlightenment, while Ibn Fattouma is the connection between one and a balanced society. This expression of freedom in The Journey of Ibn Fattouma can be found page page 84 and 85, when Qindil hears the athan & asks the Iman of Halba is a Muslim country. The Iman replies by saying, “Halba is a free country. All religions are to be found in it. It has Muslims, Jews, Christians, and Buddhists; in fact, it also has atheists and pagans.”(Mahfouz 84-85) In addition, freedoms like religion were very unknown. Halba was once a place of great suffering and injustice, before it came to be the free land that it currently is. Fighting alongside Pioneers who wanted their rights and freedoms that they strongly believed were theirs. This idea can be compared just like in the American Civil War, the Union believed strongly in anti-slavery. While in the Conference of the Birds we can find this expression of searching not so much for freedom within society but freedom through enlightenment with god or one with the Simorph. On page 60 this is illustrated when the remaining thirty birds find Simurg and who says, “As for Me, I am more than thirty birds. I am the very essence of the Simurg. Annihilate yourselves in Me joyfully and gloriously so that you find yourselves in Me.”(Attar 60). This was the moment when the 30 remaining birds gave themselves to Simurrg to be once and for all one with themselves.
Again we can conclude the differences between these two books. As one expresses the unimaginable struggles of both existential and intellectual levels as the character attempts to determine the meaning of life in relation to him himself.. While the other is about the journey of 30 birds, led by a hoopoe, traveling through the seven valleys, each teaching a different moral, overall not being with oneself but one with god, being manifested and in peace, becoming aware that they are after all the Simurgh.

Civil War Uniform
The uniform of the Army of the Potomac would have been the average blue Union uniform, which consisted of light blue pants, a blue overcoat, a wool shirt, wool socks, shoes, and a cap called a kepi. They would also carry a knapsack and a haversack, where they would bring other tools and supplies. While the Confederate uniform would have generally been made of cotton, the Union uniform would have generally been made of wool. The uniform of a soldier would identify what branch of the army he was in. Blue striping would show that the soldier was in the infantry, yellow was for the cavalry, and red was for the artillery. Officers would wear certain insignia to show what rank they were. This blue outfit were not uniform though. In the early days of the civil war, the kinds of uniforms varied, and the local militias called upon wore whatever they brought. Not all uniforms they had were blue, and some could even have been gray.
There were some who came dressed like the french zouaves, and others came in wild colors. The confederacy would have had a similar problem, and uniforms might have been whatever they were wearing at their time of coming. During the early battles of the war confusion occurred due to this, and friendly fire was common. Even throughout the rest of the civil war, the uniform varied because of lack of materials. For our project we will wear blue pants and blue shorts. This was what union soldiers generally wore for battle, and even though ours won’t be consistent, throughout most of the war the union uniform varied. It would have been made of different things because of lack of materials. Our flag is a maroonish-red flag, which has a swallow tail. Because we are lucky to fight in the east against Robert E. Lee, and that we need all the luck we can get against Robert E. Lee, we have added a 4 leaf clover in the middle.
Crossing the clover we have a pair of rifles, crossed, showing that we are a force of fire. We have borrowed our design from the many different flags of our regiment. We have taken the color from the headquarter flag of general meade. From him we also took a swallowtail design, and also the basic layout, with a center, a swallow tail, and a solid color. Our four leaf clover on our front gave us luck, but was borrowed from the irish brigade, which was part of our army. We want to honor the brave Irish who fought with our army. We also took the gun crossing idea from the flag of Ambrose Burnside's Headquarters flag, which has an anchor and a cannon crossed. The main flag we borrowed from, the flag of meade’s headquarters, was a swallowtail flag, will a golden eagle inside a silver wreath in the center. This is on a maroonish magenta background. Burnsides flag showed the american flag, with and anchor and a cannon on a badge where the stars would be. Stars surrounded this symbol. This showed a militaristic version of the american flag, symbolising that we would have to fight to keep the country together. The anchor was influenced by Burnsides history in the navy.

Pennsylvania Civil War
The Americans Celebrated their first century of independence in 1876. Survivors of the recent civil war observed the century proudly and rather self-consciously and above all in the grand centennial Exposition held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They spread over several hundred acres, the exposition occupied around 180 buildings and that attracted over nine million visitors, and about one-fifth of the country’s population at a time. Fairgoers strolled through exhibits of life in colonial times, then hurried off to see the main attractions which machines, inventions, and products of the new industrial era.
A Japanese pavilion generated widespread interest in the culture of Japan. There was also a women’s building, the first ever in a major exposition. In the entire exposition, the main focus was machinery. Machinery Hall was civilization. Long line of the curious waited to see the telephone, Alexander Thomas A. Edison displayed several recent inventions, while nearby, whirring machines turned out bricks, chewing tobacco, and many other products. Fairgoers first saw the public display of the typewriter, Elisha Otis’s new elevator, and the Westinghouse railroad air brake. A Giant steam engine dwarfed everything else in the air.
Alone, it supplied power of eight thousand other machines, large and small, on the exposition grounds. Corliss poor design was soon obsolete, but for the moment it captured the nations imagination. It indicated a swift movement toward an industrial and urban society. Industrial growth was thing to remember, neither a simple nor steady nor inevitable process. It involved human decisions and brought with large social benefits and cost. The growth varied in many industries and many years. It was concentrated in the northeast in 1980, more than 85 percent of Americans manufactured goods originated. Industrial development proceeded at an extraordinary pace.
Between 1865 and 1914, the real gross national product the total monetary value of all goods and services produced in a year with prices held stables. They also grew a rate of more than 4 presents a year, increasing about eightfold overall. Founded in 1886, the American federation of labor was a loose alliance of national craft unions. It organized only skilled workers along craft line, avoided polities, and workers for specific practical objective. Born in London tenement in 1850, Gompers was a child of the union movement. Settling in New York, he worked as a cigar maker, he also took an active hand in union activities, and experimented for a time with socialism and work class politics. The Homestead Strike troubled many of the American who wondered whether industrialization, for all its benefits, it might carry a heavy price in social upheaval, class tensions, and even outright warfare

Lincoln’s Civil War
In Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address, he surprised his audience by giving a speech regarding politics instead he talked to the people about the Civil War. President Lincoln used encouraging diction, optimistic tone, and biblical allusions to inspire Americans that there is hope for the future and to keep working towards peace.
Lincoln begins his speech with encouraging diction to make the American people be positive about the situation and to show how they will see the war to its end. His encouraging diction creates a feeling of unity and strength with words like “strive”, “peace and “bind up”. Lincoln uses these words to express that he will be by their side till the end and lead them to become a peaceful unified nation. A path of reconciliation and healing is what Lincoln wants for the nation. The word “strive” expresses his emotion towards his purpose of inspiring Americans to work for peace in order to meet the light at the end of the tunnel. He uses the word “bind up” to express how the personal wounds suffered by Americans need healing but also the nation as a whole. Lincoln brings up the “lasting peace” that will follow after the unification of the country. He hopes this healing and peace will come upon the nation so that they will be able to progress after this disturbance. Throughout this speech, Lincoln uses an optimistic tone to encourage Americans and help reunite the country. He does this by calling the American people to action with sentences like “let us strive to finish the work we are in” and “to do all which may achieve and cherish a just lasting peace.” He hopes that the world will be able to move on and rise to become one single, unified country. He doesn’t openly and radically bring up negative things that could trigger his audience. Lincoln makes sure that he uses this optimistic tone to calm and ease the already strained emotions of his audience. Lincoln’s biblical allusion shows his audience that he has strong faith in God. His use of biblical allusions lets people know that we are able to depend on God for help and that he will be on their side through their struggles. Lincoln “Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away.” He lets people know that the war is going to end if people have hope and pray to God. If these people have faith in God then all things are possible. The allusions show that there is going to be a future for America and it’s a bright one.
Abraham Lincoln uses encouraging diction, an optimistic tone, and biblical allusions to show his hopes and plans for America. The use of these rhetorical strategies gives people confidence in Lincoln to lead the country in the right direction. These strategies help Lincoln to express his views on what he believes will unify the country into one.

Post-Civil War America
The United States of America is an extremely powerful, wealthy, and influential nation. Its origin is one birthed through the debates, opinions, and compromises of people who had a strong sense of nationalism and desire for justice. However, even though the views of the founding fathers aligned enough to declare independence and start an entire new country, the way said country would be run caused splits in opinions. Political parties have been around since the beginning, with there being two counterpart parties that stood out, encompassing the ideals of majority of the population. Today those two major parties are the Democratic Party and Republican Party.
The Democratic Party has seen drastic changes in its ideals since its origins in the 1800’s. Some might say they did a full turn around in their philosophy, going from a more conservative view to the now left leaning ideology we are familiar with today. For example, in their beginning they had conservative views on social topics such as civil rights reform in Post-Civil War America. (Cite). Now their ideologies have shifted to a more liberal view, especially with social justice. They find a lot of their support in people who heavily rely on welfare programs since they push for the government to put more time and effort into the improvement and accessibility of said programs. Those who have experienced social injustices also support the party since they have such a high presence in the push for civil rights. (cite). When it comes to government action, the Democratic party believes there should be more government involvement in businesses and the economy, so that there can be more regulations put in place to ensure equity in business practices. Without these there will be unfair business practices resulting in the exploitation of the average or impoverished American, leaving them at a disadvantage. This also goes along with varying taxes depending on income, so that those who aren’t wealthy won’t be held to the same tax standards as those who have higher incomes. Basically, the Democratic Party wants to see that everyone in America is held to standards that are equitable for everyone and that society allows all to have access to the tools they need to succeed. They believe giving more power to the federal government can achieve this objective.
The Republican Party’s origin dates back to the 1850’s, formed by antislavery leaders who were opposed to the expansion of slavery into new American territories. (cite). They have evolved into a conservative view, right leaning party with strong beliefs. Since they are the opposing party to the Democrats, they also have passionate views on the economy, social justice, and government power. They believe a strong central government is not what the country needs, and would rather see the States be given more power. This will allow the States to have more legislative power and say in their local matters without having to worry about strong federal regulations.

Independence after a Bloody Civil War
Only 8 years ago the nation of South Sudan split away from Sudan to become its own country. After a year of conflict that had claimed around 2 million lives, the Nairobi Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed that the south could vote to secede. On July 14 the people of South Sudan gather and celebrate the birth of their nation. The government they formed is called a Republic, Representative democracy, Federation, Presidential system, Federal republic government. The president is Salva Kiir Mayardit. South Sudan is similar to USA (United States of America). Both country gained independence after a bloody civil war in there country. They also have a president to represent their country.
South Sudan is home to 64 tribes. In South Sudan when you greet someone you give them a handshake and a tap on the should. Most people live in poverty and many have not had the opportunity to be able to get a education. Culture and tradition are valued more in their culture than education. In their culture they have many traditional dances. The biggest religion in South Sudan is Roman Catholic Christianity. It makes up about 37% of the population. There are over 60 indigenous languages, but the national language is English. The line between males and female is very clear in their culture. Men fight and defend, and women take care of the household.
One of the most important natural resources is the White Nile. The region is also very rich in mineral like petroleum, iron ore, copper, chromium ore, zinc, tungsten, mica, silver, gold, and hydropower. The thing is that South Sudan is one of the poorest country in the world. The country is very weak and not dependable from an economics standpoint. The majority of people work in their community, next is labourers, and then managers.
The salary of an employee in South Sudan is around $3,000 a year. In the united states a good job around $35,000 per year. Our lowest paid employee who are paid minimum wage get about $15,000 a year. That mean that it takes a ? of a year to earn on minimum wage to get what a good employee in South Sudan could earn in a year. This country could be a much richer country if it had the technology that the USA had. They have many rich minerals but no way of producing them. They have petroleum, iron ore, copper, etc. They would have no issue if they could only produce those minerals they could become a great powerful nation. The same story is true with many nations in Africa because of the lack of technology.

Dehumanized Women and Civil War
According to Economic History Association, nearly 4 million slaves with a market value estimated to be between $3.1 to $3.6 billion lived in the U.S. just before the Civil War. Slavery was a time period where many blacks suffered and died. An era that benefited a large number of people, including cotton consumers, insurance companies and industrial enterprises (Bourne). Slavery was brutal for everyone but heinous for women, especially after enduring the evil act of being separated from their children. It was rare for families to stay together when born into slavery. The autobiography of Harriet Jacobs, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is a great example of how slavery dehumanized women. She documented the horrors experienced in twenty-seven years as a slave.
Harriet Jacobs was born into slavery on February 11, 1813 in Edenton, North Carolina. Despite common factors of slavery, her father Daniel Jacobs, who was a carpenter and a slave to Andrew Knox, managed to live with her mother Delilah who was slave to Margaret Horniblow (Jacobs 618). She lost her mother at the age of six and then became property of her mom's kind mistress, who nurtured and taught her how to write, read and sew. Slaves were also owned by masters that were kind and treated them as family, not everyone was this fortunate. To be clear, kind masters do not change the immortal act of slavery. After all, slaves were merchandise to men, and needed to be kept in their best condition.
Happiness did not last for Harriet, in 1825 at the age of twelve, the kind mistress died and her ownership gets transferred to her niece Mary Matilda who was only three years old. Due to her age the actual master is her father, Dr. James Norcom. A year after her father died, leaving her brother and grandma as her only family. Her grandma Molly Horniblow was a free woman living in the same area of the plantation, well respected and patronized by many people. Even then Harriet would not dare to tell her of any of the abuse she endured out of pride and fear.
Dr. Norcom brought nothing but misery into her life. When she turned fifteen years old, he began to whisper foul words in her ear, which the mistress suspected of. During slavery there were no laws protecting slaves of insult, violence or death (Jacob 619). No one spoke of these shameful actions, it was a violation with consequences. As much as she wanted to confide in someone, she would not dare because her master threatened to kill her if she was not “as silent as the grave” (Jacob 620). The master secretly was the father of eleven slaves, during this time masters impregnated a lot of slaves and would either raise them amongst their own or sell them off. Many Southern women were aware of this and married them either way. They would instead acknowledge them as property as well.

San Carlos during the Civil War
Is there a difference how the Guatemalan government treats their people depending on gender and race? In the novel The Tattooed Soldier by Hector Tobar there are three main characters with different perspectives. Two of the characters are a couple and the other a worker for the government. The couple is Antonio and Elena. The worker is Longoria who is a soldier. Elena in college was helping the rebels and Antonio was a revolutionary. In Guatemala there has been an increase in death rates because the government doesn’t do anything. The reasons why there is an increase of death rates is lynching, gangs, and revenge.
Elena was going to the Universidad de San Carlos during the civil war. She was an informant for the rebels. The rebels were a group of people who didn’t like the government’s idea of taking land from them. The rebels are citizens of Guatemala from small villages or people from the city. All the boyfriends that Elena had were revolutionaries. Her first boyfriend Ernesto was the one to introduce her to revolution and protest. After a while she wanted to change and date someone out of the movement. So she hooked up with Antonio. Elena was tired of the movements and wanted to rest for a while.
When Antonio and Elena moved together to a village they found out that the river water was getting polluted. Elena wanted to make aware why small infants were dying but Antonio stopped her to not get attention. Elena and Antonio moved away because the government was looking for them for rebelling against them. Antonio and Elena were both informants to the rebels. After the peace treaty was signed in Guatemala the people have been waiting for the dictator who led the entire operation to be sentenced or killed. The United States were doing the trail for him but they just gave him house arrest. He died on April 1, 2018 at age 91. So the Guatemalan people didn’t get their justice and some rebels started to follow the police to make sure they gave punishment to the criminals.
People started to do the same thing and follow them in big crowds. If the police officers let go the criminal the mob of people will lynch the person in brutal ways. The person was either stoned or burned. If the person was stoned they will make sure he/she was dead then cut open their stomach and fill it with rocks. Then they will throw the body into the river or lake. The only reason why people started to lynch people was because of the government not doing anything to the criminals. Some of the tactics they used to lynch were learned in the war from the military. During the war the military lynched people who were rebels or sometimes just to kill. The military used this tactic to scare people not to go against them.

Union Army in the Civil War
Grant was born in Ohio on April 27, 1822. On March 10, 1864, he became the commander of the Union Army in the Civil War. Grant became very famous after the Union won the war, and later became president in 1869. While Grant was president he worked hard to get the North and South back together. He also worked on Reconstruction. Grant started off as a second lieutenant. Grant married Julia Dent and they had 4 kids together. In 1854 Grant was done with the military, or so he thought. When the Civil War started, Grant took a position as a colonel. Grant was doing very good. His army took control of Vicksburg, Missouri. This was a big deal. Lincoln gave Grant control of the Union in March 10, 1864. In 1865 Robert E. Lee gave up. Grant had won the war for the Union army.
Whenever Grant was president, lots of mistakes were made. He didn’t know what he was doing.A man named Alexander Graham Bell had big dreams. He wanted to create a machine called the harmonic telephone. This machine would send information to other people through wires. Bell had bigger plans though. He wanted to be able to communicate with other people without actually being with the person. In 1875, Bell had figured out how to do this. What he made was a simple model of the telephone. In 1876 Bell received his patent. A couple days after he got his patent, on March 10, he made the first phone call.
He said, “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you.” Today known as AT&T, AT&T used to be called the Bell Telephone Company. The company was created by Bell in 1877. Bell was taken to court because other people told the court they had made the telephone. 550 court objections were made against his company, but he kept his patent. 6 weird deaths happened on the Ocean Liner Karmania in 1903. The Karmania was quarantined in San Fransico on March 10, 1903. The six dead were believed to have died from cholera. The other 773 people on the ship had to stay on board until the ship was cleaned and there were no more people sick. The Karmania had already had cholera on board a decade earlier. Three people died on the Karmania in 1893.The bombing of Tokyo, otherwise known as the “Night of the Black Snow” happened on March 9-10 in 1945. The mission was called “Operation Meetinghouse”. The United States bombed Tokyo, Japan. Between 80,000 and 100,000 people died, and 1,000,0000 were left without homes. This bombing was one of the most deadly to ever happen in war (Grant).
The bombs that were used were called firebombs. They slowly fluttered to the ground, and without and explosion, burnt whatever it landed on. The fires from the bombs connected and create a huge fire. The wind swept the fire up and created a fire twister.

The Death Toll of the Civil War
How manny losses exactly can a country endure? An America in which over six hundred thousand soldiers die off of the strength of each other. This type of American struggle is next to other worldly to most Americans at this point. During the civil war, Americans wag early pushed their children, spouses, and parents go off to battle, understanding and accepting the high probability that they will be killed. Today, the demise of a soldier in can emerge as a main story in the news. Throughout the Civil War, some families were not even aware of a family member’s demise until an extended amount of time in the future. Mark S. Schantz debates about the ideologies and theories surrounding the loss of life, which helped raise the war's highly intensified carnage. At the times of the American Civil War, theories regarding death was set even before war was even commenced.
My reason for choosing this literary work lies within its emphasis of the death toll of the civil war. That correlated with Gone In The Wind from my own personal perspective. This is due to the fact that Scarlett too was effected my the mass numbers of death that kept on rising. We see how her Character is constantly challenged due to losing those around her. Schantz brings up how the American Society of 1861 views death. Death was normal to them, in fact, it was accepted. Being that the probability was so high, there was no point in them fighting it. The dark past of America that Schantz decides to delve into describes the emotions of every character in Gone In The Wind. Death is the greatest motivation for victory at these times.
“The Generation of American who fought in the Civil War understood they could not understand the embrace of death. Nor did the particularly wish to.They Knew that death was the inevitable portion of all life.”
As aforementioned, the thought of death was not strange to pre civil war Americans. They felt that this just came as a part of the life we choose to live. Due to this, death tolls raised due to people not choosing to partake in the necessary precautions in order to disrupt their demise.
“Encounters with death surface in almost every conceivable source with which historians of this period have worked”
Another quote that examines the way death was viewed by citizens who lived during the civil war. Plays, poetry, and other forms of historic sources all contain the general ideas of death. Few feared it, in fact, it was personified to be the driving force in the war.

Sino-Japanese War and Civil War
Buddhism:
Buddhism was born when Siddhartha Gautama, the founder, discovered the eightfold path to salvation. Buddhism is the only major religion that does not center upon worshipping a God, so some people consider it a philosophy rather than a religion. Buddhism traveled from India, where it was born, to China, and from there, it arrived in Taiwan.
Taoism:
Taoism is based on the teachings of a Chinese philosopher known as Lao-Tzu. It is also known as Daoism, which is more accurate to the Chinese pronunciation of the word. A major teaching in Taoism is the principle of the Ying-Yang, which sees the world as a world filled with complementary sources. Just like Buddhism, there is no God in Taoism, and that was a big contributing factor to the two religions/philosophies merging in Taiwan.
Taiwan had been held by its indigenous people until the seventeenth century. It had contact with China since the early days of the T’ang Dynasty
Sino-Japanese War and Civil War:
During the Sino-Japanese War, Taiwan was taken by Japan, until the Japanese were defeated in 1945. During this time, a civil war was occurring in China, as General Chiang Kai Shek of the Republic of China fought against the Communist forces of Mao Zedong. General Kai Shek’s forces were pushed to Taiwan, where they were forced to stay by Mao, who originally planned to invade Taiwan finish of the Republic for good, until the US blocked it. Chiang took control of Taiwan, and declared all of China to be under the rule of the Republic of China. Most world leaders recognized Taiwan as his property
Current Relations with China:
Both the communist People’s Republic of China(PRC) and the Democratic Republic of China(ROC), claim to follow a one-China policy, in which they are they only controllers of China and by extension, Taiwan. The ROC is slowly fading away as some people in Taiwan advocate for complete reunification with the PRC. If this happens, the ROC will cease to exist following the One China Policy Soup Dumplings:
The Chinese Soup Dumpling or the Xiao Long Bao is one of the most popular food items in Taiwan. One of the most popular chain is the Din Tai Fung which is known for their soup dumplings. They don’t have many restaurants, but there are eight in Taiwan, four in Los Angeles, two in Seattle and a couple more restaurants across the world. Inside of the dumpling includes pockets of ham or pork or chicken broth. People may say that the Din Tai Fung chain overpriced is because of how hard it is to cook.
Beef Noodle Soup:
Taiwan’s famous and national dish is the Beef Noodle Soup or the Niu Rou Mian. Although this dish is called beef noodle soup, you could use pork. This dish contains beef, a spicy broth, noodles, bok choy, pickled mustard greens, fresh scallions and cilantro. The beef noodle soup is flavored with star anise, bay leaves, ginger and seasonings that are commonly used in Chinese cooking such as dou ban jiang or known as broad bean paste and the Taiwanese BBQ sauce.
Braised Pork Belly Rice:
Another one of Taiwan’s best dishes is the Braised Pork Belly Rice or the Lu Rou Fan. This dish can be found in night markets or any restaurant easily and is really cheap. The dish spends two hours cooking and contains pork belly, shanghai bok choy, dried shiitake mushroom, boiled eggs, and fried onion. The pork is braised in dark soy sauce, five-spice powder, fried shallots, and garlic.

A Civil War Soldier’s Life
A Civil War soldier's life was one of almost persistent monotony and labor broken up by a few hours of extreme violence in battle. The typical soldier probably had a background in agriculture, in his late teens or early 20's and had probably never traveled more than 50 miles from his home.
In the field a soldier usually dined on primarily a large, cracker-like wafer called 'hardtack.' Soldiers also consumed coffee. The civil war saw the first use of dehydrated vegetables called 'desiccated'. or 'desecrated' by the men. Salt pork, rice or beans, with the occasional swap of salted beef for the pork was standard food for the soldier. Scavenging helped fill out the dietary needs for dairy and fresh produce, and such niceties as canned peaches and tinned oysters could be purchased at ridiculous prices from the sutlers (A sutler is a civilian merchant who sells provisions to an army in the field, in camp, or in quarters).
After the initial shakedown period, the soldiers usually slept on the ground crowded together in groups to save body heat. Many soldiers were issued one piece of canvas that buttoned to another making a simple shelter for two that was called a 'dog' or 'pup' tent. Often soldiers just rolled up in their shelter half, along with their blanket and rubberized or painted ground cloth, if they were lucky enough to have them. In summer months on the march, soldiers would literally throw away all but the basic gear for relief from the heat and then be under stocked for the winter month marches. If the soldiers went into winter encampments for a lengthy stay, they would build tent-sized cabins topped by their dog tents. Complete with a chimney and fireplace this was one way to keep out of the elements. Other soldiers-built shelters made of cut poles, covered with evergreen limbs.
After the initial start of the civil war, soldiers carried as little as possible. Their weapon and accessories, meaning things a soldier would need for his weapon like a cartridge box, cap box, along with the bayonet and the belt and sling to carry it all. When marching, they also carried a rucksack containing 3 days rations, hardtack, coffee beans or instant coffee (called 'essence of coffee') making its first appearance during the civil war. Mess gear, a tin cup (useful for drinking and cooking in), and 40 rounds of ammo. The soldier carried a canteen, he may carry a Bible, a deck of cards, some stationary, chewing or smoking tobacco, or a pocket knife to whittle with. The soldier carried his bedding and shelter in a knapsack, progressively less used as the war went on.

Spain Civil War
In Picasso’s Guernica, the woman on the left is screaming at the bull while holding a dead child in her arms. The woman’s and the bull’s body appears to be asymmetrical. Perhaps, their body represents their mental state. Out of all the figures in the painting, the bull is the only one who does not express fear. Perhaps, the bull symbolizes Spain’s government. Its expression and body symbolizes how Spain’s complicit government felt after Nazi Germany burned Guernica, Spain. The lightbulb with the closed eye-shaped object could represent Nazi Germany. The woman with the candlelight represents the international community seeking for the truth. Using the lightbulb with the closed eye-shaped object and the woman with the candlelight, Picasso is telling the viewers that Nazi Germany lied to the international community. By utilizing symbolism, Picasso wants to show the level of cruelty and indifference expressed by Nazi Germany, Fascist Spain’s unwillingness to fulfill one of their promise: to bring prosperity to Spain, and the civil war brings adverse effects to all forms of life.
This kind of painting is certainly not a painting I want to see in the morning, because this piece is the very definition of nightmare. Picasso painted Guernica in the form of odd shapes and dimly resolved images. These bear a strong similarity to one’s dream when sleeping at night. The difference is I can go back and see the shapes and agony again.
In some aspects, this painting reminds me of Trump’s administration on the migrant caravans. In some ways, the current US government is like the bull and the lightbulb with the closed-eye shaped object. Just like the woman is screaming at the bull while holding a dead child, parents and children were screaming not only at the people who are in charge of imprisoning the potential immigrants, but also at the US government’s indifference. Its indifference towards a certain group of people is clearly identical to Nazi Germany’s.
If it is possible to improve a masterpiece, I would like to see the artist make the severed crying bird on the background visible, so the message would be loud and clear. In addition, Picasso could have colored his painting to make the painting look more alive. Instead, he made it black and white to resemble the newspaper of the day. Finally, he could have made smaller objects big enough to grab the viewer’s attention and leave them to interpret. If the artist applies these suggestions to his painting, then the audience would get a clear picture on the effects of war.
Picasso created a powerful visualization of terror and confusion caused by war, especially against unprepared civilians. He emphasized the raw brutality of such attacks using symbols familiar to the Spanish and French audiences: the bull and the horse. One is calm and the other is mortally wounded and in pain. The anguish, confusion, and terror on the majority of the figures make an instantly recognizable symbol against war and inhumanity of people who cause such destruction.

Native Americans and Civil War
The Violence of the Gilded Age began with Americans almost completely killing off Native Americans. Our Country was rapidly expanding after the Civil War, and we knew we would need to deal with the Natives to be able to further expand Westward, we wanted to expand Westward to be able to further expand our country and economy. At the time we believed that if Indians did not integrate themselves into our Society than they would diminish; and so, we tried to “Civilize” them. However, when the Natives refused to accept the American way of life, it turned bloody. When gold was discovered in Native territory in South Dakota’s Black Hills, The American Army went against an old treaty and invaded the region. This Angered many Natives, causing them to Join Leaders Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse in Montana at the Little Bighorn River. Americans heard of this large force of Natives but weren’t sure of the true extent.
On June 25, 1876, George Custar led his 7th Calvary to Scout ahead for troops and made the mistake of pressing on. He and his few hundred men were met by a force of 3,000 Sioux Native Americans and were quickly slaughtered in what’s known as the “Battle of Little Bighorn”. Although it was an apparent landslide victory for the Natives, the slaughtering of Custar and American troops backed the racist beliefs of Americans who claimed Natives to be Barbaric and Wild. Many Natives began partaking in a “Ghost Dance”, which taught that Natives had been overtaken and killed because they had forgotten their Ancient customs.
The Sioux believed if they partook in this Dance that their god would restore the Earth free of non-natives. However, Americans grew weary of this dance, and wanted to stop them from doing it. This led to the deciding “battle” of the Indian Wars. On December 29, a U.S Calvary Unit surrounded a group of Ghost Dancers led by Big Foot, a Sioux chief, near Wounded Knee Creek and demanded they surrender their weapons. A fight broke out between an Indian and a U.S. soldier and a shot was fired, although it’s unknown from which side. What followed was not a battle but an outright massacre. At least 150 Natives were killed, many of them Women and Children. After the fighting had ceased, and we had made our point, we came up with a permanent solution to our Native problems.
The Dawes Severalty Act of 1887 was a plan to split up the Entirety of Oklahoma equally for Natives, however we had killed so many of them that we had left over land and ended up selling it to White settlers to try and make a profit (George-1/30) (Example 1) The Violence that Americans of the time bestowed upon our Native American brothers fully exemplifies Capitalism overruling Democracy. We had gone against a treaty that we had signed with the Natives to stay off their land, all in the name of gold. Then we decided we needed to relocate them completely in order to be able to expand Westward and incorporate the rest of our Country into the worlds Economy. At the time we were so blinded by Money we didn’t think twice about the Devastation we caused these people. “Wealth had always conferred power, but never had a class

Discriminatory Laws and Civil War
Although the Union Victory in the Civil War was achieved and amendments such as the thirteenth and fifteenth were passed, African Americans’ status in the United States was still very much questionable even though they were now supposedly free. It could be confidently said that they lived similarly to how they were before the Civil War due to several practices, some of which (like the black codes) sole purpose was to, “keep African Americans as propertyless agricultural laborers with inferior legal rights” (Davidson et al. 442). These discriminatory laws and practices, established by white politicians, stopped African Americans from being truly equal by restricting their voting rights, preventing them from owning land, and not allowing them to testify against whites. When the fifteenth amendment was passed it stated African American males were free to vote. However, this was only true to an extent. Southern states found loopholes around it and used it to their advantage. White Democrats actively worked together, disenfranchising African Americans.
In the state of Mississippi, a new state constitution required several things (Davidson et al. 571). A poll tax needed to be paid in order to vote, however it was set so high that most people could not afford to pay it. Additionally, a literacy test was required for registration, but it was quite difficult to pass. Conservative Democrats favored the implantation of these devices, since they eliminated a majority African Americans from voting and prevented them from voting for their oppositions. Furthermore, not being able to own property limited them severely and the book even describes it as the following, 'Few freedpeople acquired land after the war, a development that severely limited African Americans’ economic independence and left them vulnerable to white coercion.' (Davidson et al. 447).
Being propertyless, many had no choice but to work for white landowners. This led to the rise of sharecropping, which on the surface offered more personal freedom, however it, 'was a harshly exploitative system in which black families often sank into perpetual debt' (Davidson et al. 451). Although it was slightly better than before, this was essentially slavery under a different name, proving that life for them was not any different pre Civil War. The worst part of it all was that even though many different atrocities were committed, African Americans could not testify against Whites, which was included in the many black codes passed. While they could sometimes testify against other people who were also black, this did not serve them any justice.
By not allowing African Americans to testify against whites it basically excused the actions and hate crimes executed by groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. People of color have long been oppressed throughout history. White politicians utilized black codes which stopped African Americans from testifying against whites among many other liberties, created restrictions that prevented them from voting, and kept them propertyless, all allowing African Americans’ status to remain virtually unchanged. There is still a common misconception that life after the Civil War was an immediate and vast improvement for the newly freed slaves at the time, but this couldn’t have been any farther from the truth.

Post-Traumatic Stress and Civil War
Post-traumatic stress disorder is one of the most overlooked psychological disorders in society. For the longest time it was not looked at as a serious problem. Post-traumatic stress disorder is indeed an issue. Within this essay, I will be discussing its effect on army veterans and sexual assault survivors.
When most people think about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) they often think about military veterans. PTSD can be seen in veterans as early as the civil war, although during these times it was known simply as acute mania. Because there was really no way to properly treat these disorders in the 19th century, many returning veterans were committed to insane asylums where they often stayed until their deaths. This can be seen in the case of John Hildt. Before he went to the war, Hildt was a normal man, but that all changed when he returned home from the war. He was committed to the Government Hospital for the Insane in the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. where he ultimately died. According to the article on Smithsonian.com, “Hildt remained withdrawn, apathetic, and at times so ‘excited and disturbed’ that he hit other patients at the asylum” (Horwitz, 2015). When a soldier is at war they are exposed to all kinds of dangers. They along with others in their units are shot at constantly and are sometimes killed. Experiencing these things can take a toll on a person. During this time, treatment for this disorder was almost unheard of. According to the same article, “Treatment consisted mainly of ‘moral therapy,’ a regime of rest and light labor in hospital gardens, which perched atop what was once a peaceful and bucolic hilltop in Anacostia” (Horwitz, 2015). This could only do so much for a person. It is a proven fact that it can be found in not only veterans, but also survivors of sexual assault.
Every year there are several men and women that are raped, sexually abused, or sexually assaulted. According to an article titled Sexual assault survivors’ PTSD can have lifelong consequences, “” Victims of sexual assault…often attempt to forget the sexual assault,’ Holman said. ‘They often do no believe they will be believed, and (they) feel ashamed and blame themselves. This can result in post-traumatic stress disorder’” (Turman, 2018). The issue of sexual assault is not addressed as often as it should be. As a way of coping with the horrific events that occur to them, survivors often self-harm themselves or become drug addicts/alcoholics. According to this same article, “” (They) attempt to self-medicate with alcohol or drugs or sometimes engage in risky behaviors that lead to additional assaults,’ Holman said” (Turman, 2018). When dealing with the aftermath of an assault, survivors will oftentimes have flashbacks about the event that happened to them.
In conclusion, within this essay, I have discussed its effect on army veterans and sexual assault survivors. Although it has become more of a hot topic in discussions in recent years, post-traumatic stress disorder is still not regarded as a huge problem. Hopefully in the near future it will receive as much attention as other psychological disorders.

African American Community after the Civil War
The idea that personal experience defines an individual’s definition of the American Dream is clearly illustrated in the poems “I, too” by Langston Hughes (1902-1967) and “America” by Claude McKay. Both iconic poets wrote during the Harlem Renaissance (1918-1937) which reflected changes that took place in the African American community after the Civil War. McKay and Hughes work, each in their own style, deal with similar themes concerning the experience of African-Americans and the laws that prevented them from attaining the American Dream.
Langston Hughes wrote “I, Too, Sing America” in response to an earlier poem “I Hear America Singing” written by Walt Whitman. Whitman’s poem is uplifting and celebrates the vibrancy and strength of Americans working together and Hughes responded with a different reality from the perspective of a black slave. In Hughes poem, the speaker claims he is 'the darker brother' (2), referring to his skin color, and he describes being sent 'to eat in the kitchen / when company comes' (3-4). The division between whites and blacks is clear. They are not equals. The line “I too sing, America” (1) refers to black people pledging allegiance to the flag of the United States but not having the same rights as white citizens. They are not free to pursue happiness because of the racist laws of the time. McKay’s poem, “America” describes a hostile environment. McKay personifies America as a neglectful caregiver. Instead of seeing “her” as a land of opportunity he sees her as cruel and destructive. The struggle is evident even in the first three lines: “Although she feeds me bread of bitterness, /And sinks into my throat her tiger's tooth, /Stealing my breath of life,” (1-3). These lines also speak to the frustration black people feel for not having a voice within the country. Both McKay and Hughes also see the struggle as strengthening the black community’s resolve to gain equality. In “I, too”, when the speaker says “But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong” (5-7), Hughes is saying the struggle will make them stronger. Similarly, McKay says in “America”. “Her vigor flows like tides into my blood,/Giving me strength erect against her hate (5,6).
Although both poets had similar messages and both express bitterness towards racial injustice their delivery is different. McKay relies on the sonnet, keeping the formal, recognizable structure to try to get his message across. Langston Hughes, on the other hand, influenced by Jazz music, writes in no set structure and uses street language. His tone is passive whereas McKay’s diction is forceful and angry. The speaker in McKay’s poem “America” is also less optimistic “Darkly I gaze into the days ahead” (11). Whereas in Hughes poem, the speaker is looking forward to a time in the future, “Tomorrow,/I’ll be at the table” (8-9) when his people will be as free. His message is that the patriot must not just accept but rather protect the ideals that America stands for.
In exploring the poems of both McKay and Hughes, we get some idea of the complex political and social circumstances within the black community at that time that colored their view of the American Dream. For both, America does not live up to expectations.

American Civil War (1861-1865)
The Northern region was divided into two sections; The Northwest and the Northeast. Northern region is home to12 national forests located in the Northeastern section. The Northern region is also known for their scenic rivers, congressionally designated wilderness areas, historic trails, and much more. While looking around at the landscape, you might come across some eye-catching wildflowers!
The Southern region is one of the most distinct regions in America. It is known for the devastation (socially and economically) from the American Civil War (1861-1865). The south was first settled by English protestants. Southern settlers grew wealthy by raising in selling tobacco and cotton, especially in the coastal areas. These plants grew on large farms which caused a large amount of human labor, meaning people relied on slaves to collect and harvest the plants. Plantation owners gathered slaves from Africa, which led to slavery being spread throughout the south. Slavery was the biggest issue between the north and the south. Northerners thought that this was in moral and not the way of life. Eleven states left the south because of this problem. This led to the Civil War. The defeat of the south led to the end of slavery. The midwestern region is mostly planes, or large flat grasslands
The Midwestern region is mostly plains, or large flat grasslands. The Midwest contains the major waterways of the Mississippi River, which is fed by many other waterways. The region is good for farming because of its fertile soil and climate. Many crops that grow in this area include: Corn, oats, and wheat.
The Western Region is very mountainous and is known for its scenic beauty. The humid winds from the Pacific-Ocean that blow over the region keep the landscape very moist. Because of the beautiful scenery, warm weather, and wilderness, people use this location for activities such as, camping, hiking, fishing, and more.
The landmark I have chosen from the Northern region is the US Capitol building. I chose this because this is where people meet to debate new laws.
The landmark I chose for the Southern region is the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. I chose this landmark because it is a military base and my mom is in the military too.
The landmark I chose for the midwestern region is the Mall of America. I chose this landmark because I love shopping at the mall. There are also many other activities in the Mall of America other than shopping that I enjoy.
The landmark I chose for the western region is the Golden Gate bridge. I chose this landmark because the Golden Gate bridge has always interested me with its beautiful design. Even though it is a very popular Bridge in San Francisco, it was always shown in a program called “Charmed.” That Bridgeway is always shown in the opening credits.

The American Civil War Changed the Nature
In 1326 A.D in Europe the first spa was introduced, it had iron-rich waters of a spring near Liege. In 1660 King Charles the second restored the monarchy after years of Puritan rule. King Charles spent a long history of his time at a popular resorts in Bath, Tunbridge Wells and Harrogate. Spas become popular because of “in” places with masses of classy people. One of the factors leading the success of spas was the support from doctors. Doctors thought spas would help people's health. Drinking salt water from Tunbridge Wells was a way to cure number of different diseases. There were different forms of entertainment at a resort like concerts and grand parade. In the seventeenth century nobody traveled for pleasure because during that time there were poor people that had no time to travel and didn’t have that much money. During that time as well they had poor transportation to places. In the seventeenth century resorts had public baths, hotels and bathrooms. On the coast of North Africa to Greece and Turkey they had Roman baths, Men + women, separated then integrated. In 1722 Yellow Springs and Bath Spring, Pennsylvania were discovered. In the early 1800’s Switzerland was known as a summer resort. Skating was already a favorite activity for the visitors to enjoy. Along the way guests were introduced to skiing and tobogganing. In Newport in 1851 a tailor named Alfred Smith bought 140 arcs of farmland that was adjacent to Ocean House.
The earliest resorts in the US were built in the East. In the 18th century resorts soon opened in Virginia, New York and West Virginia. In 1829 the Tremont Hotel in Boston include a different number of amenities. For example, elegant marble, carved walnut furniture, pitcher and bowl, bellboys to handle guest luggage and French cuisine. The American Civil War changed the nature of many Eastern resorts. The resort turned to gambling and drew some interesting and some notorious characters to the scene. Resorts started offering more amenities and services throughout the centuries. The railroad lines provided more transportation to the resort. Having access to transportation made it easier to get to a resort. America's first resort city was Atlantic City which was build in the late 1800s. It built the first boardwalk to accommodate those who are looking for health benefits, sunshine and fresh air.Today buses bring day gambler from New York and other metropolitan areas to the resorts.

Wakanda against Civil War
Black Panther is the most distinctive black movie in the Marvel universe. Every black man in the movie has a lofty ideal, including the villains also to help the oppressed people all over the world stand up. It's all thanks to the birth environment of director Ryan Coogler that his creative ideas started with African culture.[1] It emphasizes the influence of an African country's governance concept on the masses. Therefore, I’d like to talk about whether technology isolation of Wakanda is a good policy.
Wakanda is known for its Vibranium that made the king's armor, the general's weapon, as well as battleships and new energy. Even this precious material can repair the body and cure diseases. WaKanda is a godsend land, and we cannot imagine there will be African farming nation with such rarities. Therefore, they can rely on these resources to be self-sufficient and to fully protect the territory. However, they concealed their national strength and did not communicate with the outside world so that the outside world's impression of Wakanda was just a backward farming country. And in the movie, the residents of Wakanda live in a primitive African life. Is this a failure of policy? My answer is no. The people of Wakanda are like vested interests because they enjoy unique resources. As a vested interest, there is no incentive to actively change the government. Only when the structure of the vested interest group changes or the people at the bottom can no longer survive, will the government reform take place actively or passively. The beginning of the movie tells us that when the Vibranium fell to the earth, Wakanda was fighting between several tribes at that time. In modern times when the Black Panther was in power, and when the National Convention was held, several representatives were still the leaders of various tribes. So from the perspective of the film content, the structure of vested interest groups has not changed for thousands of years. Therefore, for thousands of years, the people of Wakanda have no pressure on life, live a happy life, and there will be no civil war. When this condition is ensured, the king of Wakanda naturally has the energy to pay attention to external unrest and protect the world with high technology.
In addition, because of technology isolation, outside lawbreakers will not have the opportunity to steal technology to do evil. For example in the movie Iron Man 2, due to the promotion of Stark Industries' technology throughout the world and its widespread attention, the villain Ivan Vanko got the design drawings and imitated similar uniforms to cooperate with bad people in an attempt to harm the world. Therefore, technical isolation has proven to minimize threats. [2]
There are no good or bad political ideas, only suitability. On the other hand, Wakanda's resources are for the protection of the people of this country. Only by protecting the “small family” can we protect everyone.

Texas Civil War
Both the nation and our states political decisions rely heavily on the influence from partisanship among its citizens. These parties (specifically Democrats and Republicans) are in a constant fight to get the upper hand on one and other seeking dominance in government. When one of the parties is dominant in state politics for an extended period of time it creates more significant internal divisions. Today's party dominance and ideology all strive from a specific set of political issues and events that took place throughout the state and national politics.
After reconstruction, the democratic party began to regain dominance due to a series of political issues and events. This is primarily due to some very significant issues during this time period starting with organized labor and tenant farmers. Other very prominent events were minority rights like the jim crow laws and railroad reforms. Some of these issues were adopted from other third party like the Populist (People) party to their own platforms.
Democrats dominated Texas politics since reconstruction post civil war up until the 1980’s when a transition to Republicans began to take shape. The political issues and events that eventually led to a shift of Republican dominance happened gradually over time. The first of which was most likely the election of John Tower who was elected to the US Senate. Tower and his many conservative positions served a total of three continuous elections. The next big step towards a Republican dominance was Bill Clements defeat of John Hill over the office of Governorship in the year 1978. This helped hold the governor's office as Republican for years to come up until the present day. The final thing that led to dominance was Republicans statewide victory led by George W. Bush. Under his direction, many offices were filled with his similar ideology locking in these seats for the future has Republican.
There are three very different ideologies currently apart of the Texas parties today. One of these ideologies is conservative which is split as either economic or social conservatives. Social conservatives tend to emphasize the traditional values and believe in the government's role in preservation of good moral values found in society. Economic conservatives believe in a free market not interfered with by the government and minimal regulation of the economy. Another important ideology is liberal that believes in the government's necessity for the promoting of social equality and regulation of the economy. Liberals tend to want to protect the civil rights and liberties while greatly against those who try to limit or reject any constitutional rights.
Libertarianism is another one of these ideologies that are seen in Texas political parties less frequently. Libertarians have similarities to both the conservative and liberal ideologies and their many varying aspects. When it comes to the economy they reject government involvement and follow most of the other conservative economic traits. However, when it comes to more social issues they prefer the exclusion of government when it comes to their personal life choices.
In conclusion, Texas political parties have varied throughout history in both dominance and different ideologies at different points in time. Starting after the pre-party era republican and democratic parties have been in a constant feud over party who is in control at all level of government. Through this they have helped shape Texans different ideology and partisanships going up onto the present day.

Humanitarian Crisis and Civil War
The right to basic healthcare is something that all humans should be in possession of, but unfortunately that is not the case for some people. Citizens in Yemen are being stripped of this fundamental right due to the consequences of the ongoing conflict between Houthi rebels and the state’s national government. Yemen undeniably lacks access to basic healthcare due to the destruction of its medical facilities, deprivation of hospital utilities, as well as the destitution of the citizens. Amidst its civil war, Yemen’s hospitals are being wiped out by the rebellion force. According to Yemen’s frontman for the World Health Organization, Ahmed Shadoul, “Almost 23% of the health facilities in Yemen are no longer functional either because they were hit, they were already in poor condition or they happened to be close to military targets” (“Health”). A large amount of Yemenis are left without access to hospitals due to the violence.
This is especially disastrous as approximately half of Yemen’s people require such medical attention because they have been affected by the fighting. Despite the fact that there are still some operating healthcare facilities, they are still lacking. Additionally, Yemen’s remaining clinics have a scarcity of utility and supplies due to the warfare. The author of “Health and Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen” writes that, “Closing of the Port city of Hudaydah (Hodeidah) has further exacerbated the problem by closing one of the last entry points for food and medicine” (Pocock). Few open ports caused by military action disable Yemen from being able to import goods such as fuel and hospital supplies. This shortage of medical utilities results in many of the remaining hospitals not being able to aid those in need as well as an overall less helpful healthcare system. Although private medical facilities with improved healthcare continue to exist, the state’s poverty makes accessing them difficult. Lastly, the war in Yemen has not only led to the bombing of hospitals, but factories and other workplaces as well. Consequently, the vast majority of individuals are desperately in need of a job.
The toll that warfare has taken on the nation’s economy is so significant that “The private clinics cost more than even a middle-class civilian can afford” (Strochlic). Furthermore, even the hospital workers in Yemen have not been earning money for doing their job since 2016. All three of these effects of warfare in Yemen contribute to its humanitarian crisis. Taking this information into account, Yemen is without a doubt experiencing a health crisis due to its destructive civil war, lack of medical supplies, and poverty-stricken economy. This situation cannot be handled solely by the government of Yemen and requires the assistance of generous souls to make donations and other contributions. In times of hardship such as this, only other people can aid the less fortunate in surviving.

Mary Boykin Chestnut and Civil War
1) Mary Boykin Chestnut: Mary B Chestnut was born on March 31, 1823, in Statesburg, South Carolina. She was the oldest daughter of a politician named Stephen Decatur Miller, who strongly supported states’ rights. It was the civil war that influenced her life and her views over slaver to a great extent. She became famous due to her diary, in which she wrote about the struggles experienced by the people during the American civil war, especially women. Till the war’s first battles, Mary supported her father and husband, but after seeing the horrors of the war, her views were more inclined towards anti-slavery. Also, in a time where women were not allowed to participate politically, she raised her voice for women (notablebiographies.com).
2) Edward Everett: Edward Everett was an American politician, pastor, educator, diplomat, and orator, born in April 1794, in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He was the governor of Massachusetts, president of Harvard and gave the speech before Lincoln’s at Gettysburg. His interest in politics and exceptional speaking skills influenced his career (wikipedia.org). Although he supported Lincoln, his prime motive was to keep the slavery issue out of national politics (history.ac.uk). His approach towards the issue of Kansas Nebraska was absolutely different from others and stands out to me.
3) Abraham Lincoln: Abraham Lincoln was an American lawyer and politician, who served as the sixteenth president of U.S.A. He was born in 1808 in a poor family in Kentucky and spent a rough childhood, partly because of slavery issues. That’s why he was against slavery. I found his role really important and interesting as he not only abolished slavery, but also preserved the union, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy. He was an influential speaker and his three-hour Peoria speech set the stage for his political future (wikipedia.org).
4) John Brown: John Brown was an American abolitionist, born in May 1800, in Torrington, Connecticut. Brown was born during the period of the Haitian Revolution and saw the Haitian slaves revolting against the French. The revolution had an obvious effect on him and his views on slavery. His action’s as an abolitionist and the tactics he used made him a public figure. He believed that armed insurrection was the only way to overthrow the institution of slavery. He was well known due to the Pottawatomie massacre and the raid on Harpers Ferry. Surprisingly, today he is recognized as both, a heroic martyr and visionary, as well as a madman and a terrorist (wikipedia.org).
5) Preston Smith Brooks: Preston S Brooks was an American politician and a member of the U.S House of Representatives. He was born on in a well-known family in Edgefield, South Carolina on August 05, 1819. His high tendency for undisciplined behavior influenced his life. Brooks is primarily remembered for his May22, 1856 attack upon abolitionist and Republican Senator Charles Sumner. Sumner’s injuries were so serious that he had to take leave from his Senate duties for three years in order to recover. He was a strong advocate of slavery. Surprisingly, Brooks was against mistreatment and dishonor, and yet he supported slavery (battlefields.org).

China Civil War
The uprise in China from a poor and horrible economic country that had very little money and so on. To a major economic power within a time span of twenty-eight years is often described by people as one of the greatest success stories in these present times. It all started with the Ming dynasty, Chinese emperors began a policy of isolationism. It began separating China off from the rest of the world and stopping outside innovation from reaching China. The reason why is because the Chinese are self-centered people. Meaning that they are the Middle Kingdom.
China at one time was once the largest country before 1900, when China started to grow and become a good economy. During that time China was being hugely controlled by many foreign nations, which meant they overruled well known major ports. The Chinese have been in a variety of “Opium Wars”, which were between Britain, China and France for China it didn’t end to good. The result of that was that China had to sadly hand over it’s most important port, Hong Kong to Britain. One effect that these wars had was that China lost control of sea ports. To be exact they lost 50 of their most prosperous ports in China. At the time they were deemed as “treaty ports” that meant they were available to foreign residence and also trade. Around the year of 1949 China began to comeback and restore their country.
“After being isolated from the rest of the world for over than 200 years, China found itself vastly technologically backwards compared to the rest of the world. When Britain attacked China over the destruction of Chinese opium and decimated the Qing Chinese armies.” They were unlike the Japanese leaders who were around the same time, quickly executed the Meiji Restoration. After being visited by Commodore Perry, the Qing court was corrupt. It was only worried about controlling the power and the wellbeing of the nations.
As a result, China was overruled by foreign spheres of influence who created whole generations of opium addicts, it was not the smartest by any measure. According to https://www.quora.com/How-did-China-go-from-being-rich-earlier-in-its-history-to-becoming-poor. “Even after the Qing dynasty fell apart with the establishment of the Republic of China in 1911, warlords wrestled over China, leaving it in turmoil.” Until the establishment of people’s Republic in China of 1949 where China finally got rid of the Civil War. In year of 1979 China was opened up to trade with outside world; meaning other countries and so on. They also finally got on the road to prosperity which is still on now

Civil War Exam
Memory and Forgetting Assignment Part 1: Memory Techniques 1. The two memory techniques that I would incorporate into my studying routine would be to take notes and visualize as you read. By taking notes I can write down important information & summarize whenever feasible instead of just writing everything you see which unfortunately most students do when taking notes. Also, by visualizing myself as if I’m in the text I’m reading it allows you to picture what’s going for example if you had an exam on the civil war coming up soon visualizing yourself on the battlefield would challenge your thinking process and make you ponder what triggered the war in the first place. 2. The sensory encoding process of our memory is the first the step of creating memories by processing what we're reading, listening and visualizing. The storage process comes next after our brain is finishing processing information then sends the info into one of the three units which are the sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory.
The retrieval process retrieves the memory from storage units we store them in. While taking an exam to say if we were to study an hour before taking an exam our brain would first taking mental notes then send it to the storage then retrieve the information. 3. Relying on overlearning could improve my study habits by changing the hard-headed mindset that I have the material down perfectly which in reality it never hurts to study more even if you believe if you have the material down. Another technique to incorporate to my studying habits would be to study under similar conditions as you would be in while taking an exam.
Part 2: Short Term Memory and Forgetting 1. The short-term memory test of letters my results weren’t the best because the amount of letters gradually increase after each trail. During the picture test I felt that it was more stressful cause I only got 4 out of 20 correct. There were to many pictures for me to remember. I felt that the letter test was less stressful for me even though I didn’t get the best score. 2. I forgot some of the letters and pictures in the activities because I was overloading my brain with information instead of focusing on each picture and letter, so my brain could better process the information to memorize it. We tend to forget information we study during an exam because we didn’t invest our time into properly studying the material. We forget material we learn right after a class ends is because we're not paying attention in class or our focus isn’t entirely on the material. 3. The way I move information from short-term memory to my long-term memory is by constantly focusing on the topic I’m studying. By constantly revisiting the topic I’m studying its training my brain to place the info from my short-term memory to my long term.

New Bullets and Civil War
The start of the civil war and events leading up to the war triggered many advancements in science and technology. The earlier spread of the railroads helped move goods and transport troops during the war. Spread of communication occurred due to the invention of the rotary press and application of steam power used for printing. This led to rapid development of different news outlets and cheaper prices of news papers making new available to a larger audience. The invention of the telegraphy made it easier to gather information that happened in different locations because you no longer had to rely on mail to receive news and information. The telegraphy also made communication during the war more instant for commanders.
This new surge of news outlets made it easier to spread word from abolitionist and other activist helping fuel the fire of the civil war. Once the war began access to the news made it easier for people to know what was going on during the war allowing them better insight then in any previous war due to images and reports making the war seem more real and close to home. The civil war led to the development of better weapons such as the Gatling the first machine gun, landmines and naval mines. Although these items were rarely used due to wastefulness. The musket was used originally but was the in accuracy of the shot led to the mass production of the riffle which was far more accurate due to the better design of the barrel.
This new riffle led to the development of new bullets like bullets used today, the bullet had grooves that helped it spin through the barrel and carried bacteria causing infection once inside the target. The main way to combat these infections was to amputate. Due to the improvement of combat weapons more prosthetic limbs began to be produced and improved. The goal was to make more natural looking prosthetic for amputees and have better functioning using different ball bearings and springs.
The civil war also led to developments of new more modern naval ships. These new ships were made of iron and equipped with guns on either side so the ship did not have to turn to fire. Also developed in the civil war was the first submarine. The need for improvements of weapons and long distant communication led to the development of these new inventions and ultimately helped the north win the war over the south. Weapons built during the civil war were further improved leading to better weapons for WWI an improved fighting tactics.

Ulysses S. Grant and Civil War
Ulysses S. Grant was an incredible person who fought for our country to keep it together as one country instead of two separate countries. Not only did he win the civil war he also became a great president. He was a very courageous and incredible person and is well known for his works. He not only had a talent in being an amazing president and general, but also was an incredible horse trainer. He then used this talent as a general in the civil war.
Ulysses S. Grant was the first son of Jesse Root Grant, and Hannah Simpson Grant. He was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, where he lived for one year, and then moved to Georgetown, Ohio where he lived for the rest of his childhood life with his five siblings, Samuel Simpson, Clara Rachel, Virginia Paine, Orval Lynch, and his youngest sister, Mary Francis. He was educated at the United States Military Academy. At age 22 he got engaged to Julia Dent and married her four years later, because of his military career, they got married later than planned. He also found out that he had a talent for training horses. As a child he would play with his father’s horses in the stables and had a connection with horses his whole life.
Ulysses was known for a lot of amazing things. He was even known for being a horse trainer, because of how he used his talent in the civil war. He was the head general in the war, and he trained a lot of the horses that were used by the soldiers and himself. He was a very famous general, with the Union, in the civil war. He was probably most famous for being the 18th president of the United States of America. He was also known for a couple of quotes he had said, including, “I know no method to secure the repeal of bad or obnoxious laws so effective as their stringent execution.”
Ulysses, as the head general of the Union army in the civil war, won the war. General E. Lee, general of the Confederate army surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia. General Lee was against slavery and probably a lot of other things that caused the civil war and was only fighting to protect his home town Virginia. Ulysses was the youngest president. He had a lot of good accomplishments.
Ulysses was engaged to Julia Dent for four years. He did not know that he would go back to fight when he got engaged, so he had to wait for years while he was in the military. Ulysses had many names. His original name was Hiram Ulysses Grant, then he was mistakenly called Ulysses S. Grant, and he was called that for the rest of his life. He was also called U.S. Grant because it stood for Unconditional Surrender Grant, because of his military career.
Ulysses was a very courageous person who never gave up. He was known for many things. If he had given up he would have never accomplished anything. He was very kind and loving toward his family. He loved his country.

Effects of the Civil War
Andrew Johnson from Raleigh, North Carolina received his Presidency at a time where America had experienced the assassination of his forerunner, President Abraham Lincoln. The nation was also reeling from the effects of the Civil War. Johnson managed to establish “Political Reconstruction” in the turbulent Southern States. This was to facilitate reacquainting the people with a refined governmental system. As for the North, Johnson’s implementation had been met with approval asserts,(Mckitrick,1988).However, things took a turn for the worst “Johnson’s relations with an increasingly radical house and Senate had deteriorated; by spring of 1866 his position as leader of the Union party had become meaningless; and by fall elections of that year his influence in the country at large had all but collapsed” writes, (Mckitrick,1988).
Johnson’s ‘fall from grace’ had been a result of The Republican’s disapproval of his policies regarding the rebuilding of government. “The man who botched reconstruction, who energized and gave aid and comfort to the recently defeated enemies of the United States, the first President to be impeached by the House Of Representatives, escaping conviction by a hairsbreadth, one vote, in the Senate.” Reports, (Gordon-reed, 2011). Johnson had a lot of issues during his tenure in office post-civil war era and was the first ever impeachment in the history of Presidencies’. He indeed left his mark on the post-civil war era in US history.
Andrew Johnson had a zeal for learning. He knew he wanted more from life. He was not very educated but made steady strides towards improving himself in areas such as reading, which he did as much as he could. He started out as tailor, and then took it a step further by joining a debate society at Greeneville College. “Now he was an established citizen with property, a tailor shop, a farm, houses and other goods. He had earned the trust of his neighbors, who had elected him to the village Board of Aldermen, to mayoralty and now to assembly” writes, (Trefousse, 1997). These are some of the factors that helped to shape or prepare Johnson for his role as President. He also knew his ability to speak well, so he took advantage of that asset as well.
In addition, with Johnson receiving one of the two Presidential constituents by the Democratic State Convention at Nashville in 1840, had given Johnson the opportunity to make his presence be known in these areas. It would become the catalyst for the platform he needed within the Democratic Party comments, (Trefousse, 1997). Some of Johnson’s accomplishments included creating the gateway for the Homestead Act comments, (Gordon-reed, 2011). During Johnson’s tenure, the purchase of the State Alaska from the Russian Fur Traders was made. Johnson facilitated the purchase by appealing to congress for the monetary means to acquire Alaska reports, (Schroeder-Lein, Zuczek, 2001).
