How is Climate Change Affecting the World?
Our group is researching the way climate change affects the world in different ways. Things such as the different solutions there are, the many things it’s affecting, how it looks, and many more. Scientists have clarified that human-caused climate change starts way back in the 1800s. A NASA article about climate change mentions, human activities are changing natural greenhouse gases. They do this by burning coal and fossil fuels. This combines carbon and oxygen in the air to make CO2. Changing the natural atmospheric gases can ruin the greenhouse gases, the things that protect us. Greenhouse gases absorb infrared radiation, carbon dioxide, and chlorofluorocarbons.
Without greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect, the earth would become warmer, maybe even a little too warm. With the temperature rising, more natural disasters will happen, glaciers will melt causing the sea level to rise and coastal flooding, even ocean acidification can happen. Ocean acidification will bleach the coral reefs and marine life will start to die. With high temperatures, crops won’t grow so there will be no food, killing animals and eventually, human kind. It could ruin other things and if it gets bad enough our future won’t be looking so good. And the cost to fix things could be too high, if they don’t get ruined by climate change first.
The cultural and social view of climate change is a very interesting debate. As of the cultural side of climate change, there are tribes with different beliefs and practices of things that climate change has a large impact on. Such as things with glaciers. Due to temperatures rising, the glaciers are melting, and it affects those who religions around things such as that. Or maybe even mountains. Different tribes who live or have beliefs about the mountains have been affected to do agriculture or wild life dying off. Peoples religions being affected by human caused climate change disasters can be very devastating. Not only is it affecting people with religious beliefs, but other everyday people such as farmers. Extreme temperature will change precipitation patters and threatens crops. This will affect the farmers food source and everyone else who they supply to.
Another major thing climate change effects is developing countries. They will be at an even bigger disadvantage dealing with the effects of climate change they are already. An article by Rosaly Byrd and Laurèn DeMates talks about how they already struggle with lack of infrastructure and have less technological and financial resources to begin with. They will be struggle hard because the tiny amount of resources they are dependent on (food, public funds) will end up going towards other things to help control or fix problems made by climate change. So, for example, their public funds they received will go towards other things like building a sea wall. Another way it can affect developing countries is by affecting the people individually. People like the women, children, and elders. It can have an impact on their health and their everyday work life. Women and children in developing countries often get the job have having to collect things such as water and firewood. Their resources would be decreased causing them to have to work even harder, wearing them out, and leaving little to no time working on other tasks. Not only that, children and the elderly are more vulnerable to the health concerns associated with climate change. This will make things harder for people in developing countries, and if things get bad enough, soon everyone would be vulnerable to high risk health concerns.
Think of how many different communities there are in the world and how much space they cover. Now think of the little amount of free space there is left in the world, livable free space. Most of the world is water and oceans. Soon, with things like rising sea levels, extreme drought, extreme rainfall or others, communities are going to be forced to relocate. Each time leaving smaller amounts of land habitable for us to take, leaving nowhere for us to live. With glaciers melting, water will keep rising, covering land and leaving nowhere to live. The sea levels rising and flooding can pollute drinking water. An article by Jennifer Scroggins about climate change states, “Flooding can cause contamination of drinking water supplies with untreated sewage or chemicals and can also increase waterborne diseases as warmer air and water temperatures cause higher levels of microbial contamination.
Storms and flooding can also wipe out crop production, leading to higher food insecurity and costing low-income farm workers their livelihood.” Going back to how this affects the social side of climate change, its making it harder for communities to find places to live. Climate change can even be making it harder for communities to protect themselves during natural disasters. With the heat rising, there will be more natural disasters and they will be stronger. The natural disasters can have a major impact on out health. They can bring over diseases or many other horrible things. Things such as wild fires, floods, or hurricanes can become unbelievably stronger as the temperatures slowly begin to rise higher than were used to them being. They would start to destroy homes, crops, businesses, and they could kill off animals.
The same article by Jennifer Scroggins also states, “Beyond the deaths and injuries they bring in the short term, more frequent and intense weather events have lingering impacts that threaten the basic life support systems upon which we rely—clean air, water, food, shelter, and security. Smoke from wildfires, which can travel thousands of miles, is associated with increased premature deaths, hospitalizations for respiratory diseases and worsening heart disease. Ash and debris from burned homes and buildings expose people to toxic chemicals like asbestos and heavy metals.” Overall, climate change can have numerous amounts of affects of the social and cultural parts of the world. And not just that part of it. Climate change affects so many others, things like our future, the environment, economic problems, ethical, political and historical, and many others. It has a worldwide dangerous affect and is barely being fixed. People don’t see it as a very dangerous problem.

Why is Climate Change Important
Climate change has been a huge governmental debate for over 30 years. How important is it? Should we put regulations in place to prevent it? If so, how should it be regulated? What solutions actually work? Those are all important questions when discussing what to do about climate change and all of them can be answered differently. There are varying interests in climate change that differ depending on location and demographic. The key to addressing these arguments with tangible results is keeping a balance between all of the factors and opinions. The first opinion goes against regulation for climate change. Those who wish for less regulation fall in the categories of either disbelief in drastic climate change and its effects or that implementation would not be cost effective and could hinder businesses. Regulation only increases spending and taxes.
They believe the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) should avoid the costly regulation of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions from cars on the assumption that they endanger public health. They say it is not required by law or the Clean air act to reduce carbon dioxide emission. 85% of the energy produced in America is produced by burning fossil fuels and releasing carbon dioxide. Reducing these emissions would affect the economy and lower the average living standards. So far, congress has prohibited any regulated reduction on carbon dioxide emissions. Even if legislation was passed to cut emissions down, they believe it would have minimal effect on improving the environment even in worst case scenarios. Under the Clean Air Act any emission discovered to harm public health would increase public spending exponentially.
Things as minimal at restaurant kitchens, apartment heating systems, and running a farm would face regulation. If the EPA finds anything to be an endangerment then large companies could lose millions. The EPA has the potential to place a whole bunch of red tape over business affecting the economy. It can do more without congressional approval than the proposals congress previously rejected. Some believe regulation is an unnecessary burden on large energy companies and wish to support the oil and gas industry. Currently the Trump administration is trying to roll back as many regulations as possible, especially ones created during the Obama administration to prevent climate change. So far Trump has already managed to rollback 46 rules and is in the process of 30 more. He has stated the he believes supporting the oil and gas industry will fuel the economy (pun intended).
If Environmental Protection Agency let up on regulation then it would release the cost burden on big companies. The EPA released information that the yearly compliance cost of the entire industry is between 74 and 85 million dollars. Because of that Trump wants to remove what was put in place by the Obama administration. In order to do that, companies would be allowed to decrease frequency of well checks to prevent methane leaks, have more freedom in the equipment they use, and allow the amount of methane become state regulated instead of national regulation. As of now leaks must be checked every 6 months and repaired within 30 days. The proposed legislation would extend that time to 1 to 2 years and 60 days for reparation instead of 30, letting leaks sit longer. Equipment would not need to be checked nearly as often.
This would reduce burdens on the oil and gas companies on the North Alaskan Slope where the climate is harsh and weather is severe during inspections. If methane production was state regulated then restrictions would become significantly less in large states and places like Texas. Trump is also calling to deregulate coal production that was reduced under the Obama plan... At a rally he stated, “We want a clean environment. ... I want clean air. I want crystal clean water and we’ve got it. We’ve got the cleanest country in the planet right now, but I’m getting rid of some of these ridiculous rules and regulations, which are killing our companies ... and our jobs.” He wants to reinstate some of the coal plants and get them up and running again to increase jobs and available fuel. A third proposal wants to reduce gas mileage requirements which would increase high GWP gas emissions (global warming potential emissions). They are willing to do this because extensive scientific study has not been done to link a specific natural disaster with climate change.
Some of the already implemented changes include the following: companies no longer have to produce reports on amount of methane emission, withdrawal of toxic waste limit from major polluting companies, allowing companies to drill oil rigs in almost all of the U.S. coastal waters, approving 2 pipelines previously rejected, restricting research and environmental studies of the U.S. Department of the Interior, removing ban on lead in ammunition, tackle, and fish weights, removing many safety precautions and assessments for toxic chemicals, and withdrawal of regulations prohibiting coal companies from dumping waste in rivers. There are even varying opinions among those who do believe we should regulate to prevent climate change, like to what extent they should be regulated. But first we need to know why many wish to regulate business and why they are willing to suffer the cost of those regulations.
There are four types of greenhouse gases being released into the environment including Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, and Fluorinated gasses that trap heat in the atmosphere. There are 3 factors when it comes to determining their effect on the environment. First, how much of the emission is produced and released into the atmosphere? More abundance is equivalent to a higher risk factor. What period of time will the emission remain in the atmosphere? The longer the greenhouse gas sits in the atmosphere, the more impact it creates. Lastly, what is their potency and impact severity on the atmosphere? Carbon dioxide is the most concentrated gas released and remains in the atmosphere the longest. A study in 2016 found that the yearly emission resulted in another 65,111 million metric tons in our atmosphere.
It is caused by the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gasses. It is released when waste and all wood materials are burned and by certain chemicals during manufacturing processes. Methane, the second largest emission, is released by all gas vehicles, decomposing landfills, and by the process of refining natural gas and oil. Nitrous oxide is also emitted in similar ways to Carbon Dioxide and Methane. The last category, fluorinated gases, is currently the smallest in quantity but the most severe in effect. They are the highest Global Warming Potential gases. They cover a wide range of industrial uses like cosmetic production, air conditioning, refrigeration, insulation, pharmacy, electronic production, etc.…. Their uses grow exponentially. Actually estimating the extent of the environmental damage, health problems, and what these emissions will cost in the future is extremely difficult. There is a wide margin of possibilities. The first important possibility is ocean acidification, which is caused by the ocean absorbing the Carbon Dioxide in the air and its pH levels rising. The ocean is le largest absorber of the heat and natural gasses in the atmosphere.
The acidity along with rising ocean temperature is destroying marine life and many important barrier reefs. These reefs are not just important for fish but they are extremely important barriers to keep many tropical storms from ever reaching our shores. The air in our atmosphere has low capacity for heat and our oceans also retain heat much longer than the air. As a result heat is absorbed into the oceans and it remains for even longer than while in the atmosphere. Not only does heat expand the oceans waters but it continues to melt the northern and southern ice caps causing the rise of oceans’ water levels even more. A study conducted by the National Academy of Sciences using a computer modeling system called Earth Systems Model of Intermediate Complexity (EMIC) that projects climate change effects revealed that even if we cut all emissions all the way down to zero by 2050 the heat and water level would continue to rise in the oceans for another 500 years.
Scientific researchers at Harvard University suggest that Donald Trump’s recent rollbacks could increase death toll rate at a minimum of 80,000 people every decade and affect over a million people with new respiratory issues or asthma. These results are especially evident when it comes to coal deregulation. Scientists must factor in health cost, disaster cost, and food production as a result of environmental detriment when calculating its possible effects on the economy. Those who would increase regulation are either cautious or afraid of the repercussions we would face if our emissions affect the environment. If anything, the people who want to regulate business really want to prevent the worst-case scenarios even if there is little chance of their occurrence. So now we can discuss possible solutions to cut down emissions and toxic chemicals that some have proposed.
Other than direct regulation and government control, the first suggestion is a market based approach. Two options of this are tradable permits or emission taxes. Tradable permits set a cap on all around emissions and sell permits to companies and large emission producers so they can release the amount of emissions they, or it would allow them to trade and buy between companies. Emission taxes would tax emissions that any company produces, but if the company does not wish to pay the tax they would lower their emission rate and find renewable solutions. The company would do whatever was cheaper in their scenario, and would allow them more freedom in the choice rather than direct legislation. The next solution comes from a company called Ener-Core and its CEO Alain Castro. It has created a solution called the power oxidizer that converts many gasses from a variety of industries into clean energy. This gives companies the ability to sell and provide clean energy while complying with regulation.
They could also use it for their own energy. Over thirty million company facilities that produce these gases spend about $800 billion on energy every year. Not only that, but this solution has already been profitably commercialized. The CEO Castro has stated ,” If there’s even as much as a one percent chance that climate change is being caused by our species, it behooves us to take action, because the consequences of not taking action are far too great. We must do something, within the bounds of the capitalistic framework of our global economy. This means finding methods to reduce emissions that won’t cripple the underlying industries, cause a slowdown in economic growth or cause unemployment. There are technologies out there today that can enable companies to actually become more productive—through improved efficiencies—while at the same time reducing their emissions. These are the types of technologies that our entire planet should be betting on, because they enable a sharp decrease in greenhouse gas emissions without the risk of crippling economic growth.”
A reducing program called the Montreal Protocol completely removed chlorofluorocarbons and other chemicals that deplete the ozone layer. Researchers say this protocol will already prevent 1.4 inches of sea level rise by 2050. That does seem relatively small along with other regulations put in place, but that is why many search for other solutions and call for tighter regulation. I believe we should do what we can to help the environment. What will it cost in the future when these things finally start to backfire, when we can no longer prevent possibly disastrous effects? What happens when we can no longer reverse the damage? God has given us the responsibility to take care of the earth and exercise dominion over it. If there are any chances of repercussion from environmental damage we should do something about it. Realistically, I know we cannot take drastic measures, but there needs to some attempt and significant effort put towards prevention.
We should begin with what is cost-effective and gradually move away from the damage we are inflicting on the environment. Whether it’s a combination of solutions or one, I hope that people will put forward a conscious effort to reduce emissions and waste. We just need more awareness. Millions of small individual choices like recycling and choosing environmentally friendly products could not only bring forth a positive impact on the environment but encourage others and big businesses to make a larger change. All in all, those who are against regulation are in favor of supporting business in the oil, gas, coal, and other industries producing greenhouse gasses and toxic waste. Those who want regulation are cautious and wish to prevent or reduce effects these emissions and wasted produce. Solutions vary between deregulation, strict regulation, or more middle ground solutions and cost effective reduction of emissions.

Romeo and Juliet Compare and Contrast
They say that one of the best tips for authors is to write what you know, and William Shakespeare, a world-renowned poet-playwright, was no stranger to this. He lived in a vivid, bustling world with a rich culture; traditional, yet ever-changing. During his lifetime in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, he experienced a multitude of events, beliefs, and unique people that inspired him to write. Some of the beliefs people had during the time were the idea that obeying authority would have the best outcome and that supernatural beings were responsible for distressing things that happened. These became the themes of some of Shakespeare’s most prominent plays.
The belief that disobeying authority would have a terrible aftermath was prevalent in both society and consequently Shakespeare’s works. Elizabethan people were always concerned with making sure they were responsible, lawful citizens. It was extremely important to respect government, parents, or those of any other superior role. According to Elizabeth Kirkland and Joseph Papp in their book Shakespeare: Alive!, ‘Elizabethans were reminded over and over that any violation of duty, any rebelliousness, any tendency to disrespect the laws and government of the land would have horrific consequences not only for the individual but for the state.’ The English during that time were set in their belief that those at the top of the hierarchy were the ones to make the rules, and that any objection or offense to those rules would be catastrophic. This idea is shown in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream when Hermia disobeys her father’s wish for her to marry a man named Demetrius and disregards the duke’s alternative options. Instead, she runs away with her lover Lysander.
Chaos ensues as Hermia and Lysander enter the woods, where Lysander and Demetrius are put under a spell that makes them love Hermia’s friend Helena instead. Because Hermia decided to rebel against authority, she ended up in a situation that hurt her, her father, and three other people. Audiences at the time would definitely understand the implications of what could happen if they went against those in superior positions. The theme of disobedience having major consequences is also displayed in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In the prologue, Shakespeare writes, ‘The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love/And the continuance of their parents’ rage/Which, but their children’s end, nought could remove/Is now the two hours’ traffic of our stage’ (Romeo and Juliet 1.1.9-12.) Despite their families’ loathing for each other, Romeo and Juliet fall in love, and though it resolves the senseless feud, the two lovers die, along with several other characters close to them.
After all the suffering and death, the prince says to Juliet and Romeo’s respective parents, Capulet and Montague, ‘See what a scourge is laid upon your hate/That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love!/And I, for winking at your discords,too/Have lost a brace of kinsmen. All are punished’ (Romeo and Juliet 5.3.308-311.) Because of Romeo and Juliet’s rebellion against their parents, not only are they dead, but people from all parties involved have lost their lives, causing much pain and suffering for their loved ones. Again, the audience would be able to connect the events of the play to their own fear of the results of rebellious actions. It is clear that Shakespeare took from the society he lived in the idea that disobeying authority would have a grave aftermath and used it multiple times throughout his plays.
Another Elizabethan belief Shakespeare utilised was that unexplainable events were linked to the supernatural. At the time Shakespeare lived, people were incredibly superstitious. Odd or upsetting events with no clear explanation were blamed on nonhuman entities. In Shakespeare: Alive!, Kirkland and Papp write that ‘Magical beliefs provided the Elizabethans with the comfort of explanations and the satisfaction of redress when random and inexplicable misfortunes occured.’ When something went wrong, people insisted that it was the work of mythical creatures. Shakespeare employed this idea in his plays.
In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the character of Puck, also called Robin Goodfellow, is a fairy who loves to cause mischief, a being that would be recognized by the English of that period. Upon meeting him, another fairy asks, ‘...Are not you he/ That frights the maidens of the villagery/Skim milk, and sometimes labor in the quern/And bootless make the breathless housewife churn/And sometimes make the drink to bear no barm/Mislead night-wanderers, laughing at their harm?’ (A Midsummer Night’s Dream 2.1.20-25.) Puck delights in giving humans minor inconveniences that lead to chaos. His antics are the types of things fairies were thought to do during the era. Another mystical being feared during the period were witches.
They were also believed to cause tragedy, but on a much more extensive scale. In Macbeth, three witches cause epic misfortune throughout the play by using their abilities to create catastrophes. For example, when the first witch is agitated by a rude woman, she decides to take it out on the woman’s husband. She tells her sisters, the other witches, that she’s going to torture the woman’s husband by controlling the winds to make it so that he has trouble sleeping for eighty-one nights. She later decides that she’s going to kill him for a more brutal effect. These are the sorts of horrid things that witches were suspected of doing in Shakespeare’s time. Because the images of witches and fairies were so widely known and feared, the playwright frequently used them and other nefarious creatures to cause disaster in his work.
Shakespeare lived an intriguing world with interesting beliefs, including the ideas that going against the wishes of authority would have terrible effects and that magical beings caused bad luck and suffering. Inspired by these notions, he used elements of them to enrich his plays, thus making his works more real and entertaining to his duty-oriented, superstitious audience.

Romeo and Juliet: Thesis
Hook: Imagine having true love at 12-15 years old only to die four days later, this is the plot to the famous Romeo and Juliet. However, there are more factors that played a role in their deaths than most know.
Background Information: This play was written in the 16th Century when Europe was very unsanitary, and had plague. Many people hardly made contact with each other because it was so bad, but in the play many intimate interactions take place; many characters lost their lives.
Thesis: The deaths in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet are products biological and environmental factors; all of these factors are scientifically proven and helped health get better.
Topic Sentence: The diseases on Romeo and Juliet’s time, like the Black Plague, improved health because it only left the people with the strongest immune systems alive. Which great for future generations who will inherit this.
Evidence: Shakespeare’s London, “Royals would display the heads of traitors on spikes as a dreadful warning to all who walked the bridge.”
Details: This was a major environmental hazard because this occurred on the London Bridge, which was the only bridge that connected the two parts of London at the time. Since it was a main source of transportation, this could cause a wave of sickness to everyone who had to pass those corpses during the daily commute.
Evidence: Shakespeare’s London also states, “People would dump their household waste in the streets.”
Details: The issue here was that many people got sick from the smell of sewage, and the creatures that were in it. The famous “fleas on rats” were involved in the illness caused by this; the rats would go to the sewage near the people and the fleas would eventually go to the people and give them diseases such as plague.
Ending Sentence: All the environmental problems like sewage and corpses that influenced diseases, namely plague, also had a big contribution to helping immune systems. These problems were so severe it killed millions; leaving the people who had the best immune systems, this trait could be passed to future generations.
Topic Sentence: The amount of human interactions in Romeo and Juliet also would be a big contributor to the state of health. The amount of touching and dead bodies lying around would help spread a lot of diseases; it also left the healthiest people alive to make kids stronger.
Details: Many of Romeo and Juliet’s interactions were either holding hands, or kissing. During their time, bubonic plague was very prominent, these actions could easily have gotten each other, and their loved one’s sick as well.
Evidence: In Romeo and Juliet, “(taking Juliet’s hand) If I profane with my unworthiest hand This holy shrine, the gentle sin is this…”
Details: This was one of the more intimate scenes with Romeo and Juliet, and it incorporates them kissing after just meeting. In this time, it was a lot less common to touch very often because of the abundance of diseases.
Evidence: The play Romeo and Juliet also wrote, “Then move not, while my prayer’s effect I take. (Kisses her)” Then after three lines of dialogue, “Give me my sin again. (They kiss again).”
Details: The interactions between these two characters are alarming for many reasons. A major one is that because of the amount of illnesses going around, many people tried to avoid touch at any cost.
Ending Sentence: The numerous human interactions that occurred easily could have spread diseases that were very prominent at the time. So if the poison didn’t do, most likely they would have gave each other something.
Topic Sentence: Biology play a huge role in health because it can affect everything from someone's brain to their body. In Romeo and Juliet, their teenage brains play a big part in their decision making. Biology passed down from older generations can alter people’s bodies and make them healthier.
Evidence: One Reason Teens Respond Differently…states, “The teens mostly use the amygdala, a small almond shaped region the guides instinctual or “gut” reactions, while the adults relied on the frontal cortex, which governs reason and planned.”
Details: In the play, Romeo and Juliet, the teen are very impulsive, starting fights every few hours. Not to mention, Romo ang Juliet getting married after only knowing each other for a few hours.
Details: They also had intimate interactions, like kissing, while sickness like plague were all around them. These types of interactions were also rarely used because of these illnesses.
Evidence: Developing brain connections make teenagers impatient and impulsive states, “The scientists were looking specifically at impatience and if heightened impatience among teenagers is because of disregard for future outcomes or from oversensitivity to immediate rewards.”
Details: A perfect example is Juliet marrying Romeo instead of Paris, a literally prince, because she already liked Romeo and married him. Plus, everyone told her how lucky she would be and how much easier her life would be if she married him.
Details: However, Juliet stayed with Romeo instead of marrying Paris. Which lead her being in some of the most insanitary conditions and eventually dying.
Ending Sentence: Their teenage brains had an issue with decision making because of the lack of full development, led to the poor choices that ended up killing them.
Topic Sentence: Gender plays another part in people’s health, especially in the time of Romeo and Juliet, because men would be more at risk of getting sick than women. The duties males had to do put them in a position where getting sick was more probable than women. Women often live longer because of these occurrences.
Details: In the play of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet was at home throughout the entire play, besides the death scenes and going to the friar. However, Romeo was everywhere besides his home; he never went home throughout the entire play.
Evidence: The play states, “I went somewhere where I learned that being disobedient to my father us a sin. Holy Father Lawrence instructed me to fall on my knees and beg for forgiveness.”
Details: This quote is very important because she is talking about the only time she went outside of her house in the entire play. (Hughes) Most women in 16th century England were found doing domestic duties in the home, while their husbands worked on other duties outside the home.
Evidence: Shakespeare also wrote, “Where the devil should this Romeo be? Came he not home tonight?” “Not to his father’s. I spoke with his man.”
Details: This quote was important, as it showed a common theme, a male everywhere but in his home. As previously stated, most men were outside of their homes doing their jobs. Romeo is no different, throughout the entire play that quote was the only mention of Romeo and his house.
Details: Another worthy mention is that Romeo’s character could be a personification of death, which is alluded to many times. Including his kiss scene with Juliet which could be associated with the kiss of death.
Evidence: In the play, deaths are associated with everyone around Romeo, even himself. The list includes the following: Mercutio- “The gentleman Mercutio…was killed while defending me from Tybalt’s slander…”, Tybalt- “They fight. tybalt falls and dies.”, Paris- “(he falls) Oh, I’ve been killed!”, Juliet- “(she stabs herself with romeo’s dagger and dies)”, and finally Romeo- “romeo drinks the poison. romeo dies.”
Details: These examples of death sum up that everyone who was associated with Romeo died. He could also be referred to as a plague to others, like the one that occurred at the same time Shakespeare wrote the play.
Ending Sentence: The gender/societal roles caused the men to be more prone to getting sicknesses than women. The lack of small illnesses to build up their immune systems made them vulnerable to the more dangerous ones.
Topic Sentence: Age has a giant impact on health for many reasons, life expectancy is one of the most notable. Especially in Romeo and Juliet’s time, where the common lifespan was at a max of thirty-five years. Since the diseases killed off the ones with the weak immune systems, the ones who alive made life spans longer due to their better health.
Evidence: Shakespeare’s London stated, “When people did bathe, they’d share one bathtub of water in order from oldest (with the male head of household going first) to the youngest.”
Details: The problem given is that the youngest could be a baby. Younger children, like babies, have an immune system that is less developed than one compared to an adult male. By this time the water is so dirty a person wouldn’t get any benefit from bathing in it; leading to the saying “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.” However, there is a positive takeaway, if the baby was able to survive in this unsanitary condition, the baby’s immune system was very strong.
Evidence: Dennis Thompson from WebMD states, “Cleanliness may be next to godliness, but a home that’s too clean can leave a newborn child vulnerable to allergies and asthma later in life, a new study reports.”
Details: This could explain why kids from very clean homes often have allergies, or get sick easily. It could also prove that it is better for children to be outside with dirt, rather than inside with ventilation.
Ending Sentence: Since the body develops with age, these younger characters are more likely to die from the diseases during this time because isn’t strong enough to fight them.
Topic Sentence: Parenting can also have a major impact on health. When parents allow children to be around dirty places, their immune systems receive huge benefits.
Evidence: Romeo and Juliet states, “Don’t say anything. Don’t reply. Don’t talk back to me.”
Details: Juliet’s parents resemble a parenting style used by many parents who would be considered strict parents. These types of parents are usually criticized for trying to control their child’s life.
Details: This type of parenting style is referred to as an authoritarian parenting. These parents
Evidence:, 4 Types of Parenting Styles states, “They also don’t allow kids to get involved in problem-solving challenges or obstacles. Instead, they make the rules and enforce the consequences with little regard for a child’s opinion.”
Details: This parenting style couldn’t be more like Juliet’s parents. They definitely believe a child should be seen and not heard. In the play, Juliet never even talks to them unless they initiate the conversation.
Details: This is why Juliet had no problem following Romeo’s lead, which eventually lead to her death.
Evidence: Amy Morin also wrote, “Uninvolved parents basically expect children to raise themselves. They usually don’t devote much time or energy into meeting children’s basic needs.”
Details: Romeo received this lack of parenting which is easily spotted because his parent doesn’t even show up until his death scene in the very last part of the play.
Details: Romeo also received much, if not all, of his advice from his friends while they were out-and-about, never showing Romeo in his home. He was outdoors with all the sicknesses all around him without a care in the world.
Ending Sentence: The over-bearing parenting and the lack of parenting the kids receive led to their death because of the lack of proper guidance to help them make appropriate decisions.
Counter Claim:
Topic Sentence: Many individuals could argue that if Romeo and Juliet’s time was as clean as current day, they would be much healthier; unfortunately, science would disagree. Many studies found that the excessive cleaning made people more vulnerable.
Details: Scientists have discovered that people who clean excessively are the reason more allergies have reappeared, and why some common illnesses are having a deadlier effect on people.
Evidence: “We evolved over millions of years to have our immune systems under constant assault. Now they have nothing to do.”
Details: Ever since people have started becoming more health conscious, cleaning has been taken to extreme levels. This causes more allergies to appear and sicknesses to be stronger because people aren’t getting the contact needed to be able to withstand it. Plus, the more cleaning that is done the stronger the germs come back, and the harder they are to get rid of.
Evidence: “Over the past century declining family size, improvements in household amenities, and higher standards of personal cleanliness have reduced the opportunity for cross infection in young families,” the paper continued.”
Details: People who have siblings are less likely to sick because their sibling(s) are constantly introducing new germs, which helps strengthen an immune system. When more children are present cleaning is harder to complete, so the likelihood of presenting more sicknesses to each other are even better.
Evidence: Dennis Thompson from WebMD also states, “It turned out to be completely opposite – the more of those three allergens you were exposed to, the less likely you were to go to have wheezing or allergy.”
Details: Exposure to allergens had a huge significance to immune health. When someone has exposure to mild sicknesses, their body can learn from it and defend against it the next time it appears. When people are less exposed to these allergens, people are more likely to get allergies, or take longer to recover from common illnesses such as the flu.
Ending Sentence: The excessive cleaning done nowadays have many people’s bodies almost as weak as the plague days. These individuals are causing little illnesses to be just as deadly as plague.
Conclusion:
Restated Thesis: The state of health got better because of the epidemic at the time of the play; Romeo and Juliet show all these instances and what it leads to.
Recap: In conclusion, many biological factors including: age, gender, and biology itself can be linked to why some characters made the decisions they did. Which is what led to their own deaths and the deaths of others. Environmental factors including the: outdoors, indoors, and parenting styles, accounted for the deaths in this play.
Ending Hook: Each and every character played a part in the deaths of the star-crossed lovers, but who played the biggest role is based in perception.

Romeo and Juliet Examples of True Love
In today’s society, women are viewed as strong and independent people. They hold high powered positions, are leaders in government and take care of their families and homes. In the play Romeo and Juliet, the actions of Juliet as she moves throughout the story strongly suggest that she is becoming a strong , mature, and independent woman who controls her own life. First, Juliet shows that she is strong and independent when she tells her father that she won’t marry Paris. This is evident when she says “ not proud you have, but thankful you have.
Proud can I never be of what I hate. But thankful even for hate that is meant love.” Juliet stands up to her father. She appreciates that he is trying to find her a good man to marry but is not able to marry him because she is in love with someone else and feels nothing towards him. Juliet understands that her father is used to her following his direction without questioning it and never talking back to him.
There is a reference to this when Juliet says “ good father, I beseech you on my knees, hear me with patience but speak a word.” Juliet begs her father to listen to her which shows that she is becoming a strong, independent wshoman with her own thoughts.
Next, Juliet is strong and independent when she agrees to go along with Friar Lawrence’s plan to take his sleeping potion even though she has doubts about it. Juliet says “ what if it be a poison which the Friar subtle hath ministr’d to have me dead.” t is worried about what is in the potion but shows her strength when she puts her trust in the Friar.
Juliet is also concerned that the potion may not work properly. The text states “ how if when I am laid into the tomb, I wake before the time that Romeo comes to redeem me.” Juliet’s thoughts about the Friar’s plan are valid and show that she is thinking for herself and questioning it but realizes that the Friar does have their best interest at heart. This also shows how Juliet is developing into a mature, strong and independent woman. Some may argue that Juliet devolves into a spoiled child as a result of Romeo’s impack. Juliet shows this behavior when she made a quick decision to marry Romeo knowing that the Montague’s were the Capulet’s enemy.
Although Some may think that Juliet is acting like a spoiled child by going against her father’s wishes in marrying Romeo, she does this because she realizes that it is time for her to make her own decisions and control her own fate.
