It may not seem like much but it is about 231 000 000 people on this planet. That means that these many people could be playing games for 7-8 hours a day. It is agreeable that addiction isn’t the games fault that they are getting addicted, and it isn’t the game itself that is addicting. It could just be the dopamine in the body making the player want to play more and more. Also, it is possible that they didn’t mean to add these affects to their game. 

Mainly, there are three things that prove that fortnite is an addicting game. Not just these three reasons but many more. There are more than a thousands of reasons why fortnite can affect the brain function and make a player get addicted. One point is that there is the reward hormone dopamine, which can make players feel rewarded when they win and that can make them want to keep getting that rewarding feeling. Second is that the suspense really makes people want to know what is going to happen if they take one option or another, and also can make them feel happy if they win the suspenseful fight. Finally, there is the lose by a bit, win by a lot. This states that many players will lose by a very slight amount and they can learn from those mistakes and continue to apply it. When losing each time, they fix the mistake that they made until they win. When, winning they just feel good about themselves and want to try to boost that feeling in the time they have.

The first thing that fortnite has done to make their game so addicting to the users on the game is that they use the same ideology that the one and only candy crush had used to make almost billions. When you play fortnite they give you the feeling that when you lost, it was only by a little and if you win, it will be by a big margin. As they lose games and continue playing to learn, they will continuously play for the learning and make a habit. Once this habit is fixed, it will be their schedule and they will finally start making it an addiction, which can be dreadful. For winning, they like their feeling of reward and they will continue to play for that reason. When, the reward comes into the picture the effects on the brain. One example is they feel rewarded and want to have that feeling in all moments and they will take those feelings to school and start playing their, which can get them suspended, expelled and even make them fail school.

There can be suspense in the end game, where everyone is trying to stay safe. Or when there is a fight and you have been hit for a lot of damage. He actually believes that he made Charlie and when Charlie notices this, he argued at the Psychological Association, saying: 'How can I make him understand that he did not create me?' (134). Essentially, religious individuals believe that people are higher intellectually than other creatures, but the missing link is that humans will evolve into another animal and then that animal will treat the humans as inferiors. Christopher again shows his abhorrence of anything imaginary or miraculous. He binds the very presence of life, a standout amongst the most apparently secretive wonders, with logical standards. In spite of the fact that other individuals regularly consider themselves to appear as something else or superior to Christopher, they all happened through science. Christopher appears to discover some fulfillment in the way that, over the long haul, self-righteous people are not self-righteous after all because a human is judging a human, which is a limitation in itself. He additionally communicates his fondness for animals again by guarding them against humans' seemingly dominant and arrogant ways of life (165).

Conclusion

In both works of literature, the themes of pity, self-awareness, social interactions, and God are very clear and all of them are used to highlight the different and unorthodox views of Charlie and Christopher. However, the bottom line is that disability is a “social construct” (Ray 1). The word ‘normal’ isn't objective, it is a 'social construction' that reflects more about other people and overall society, than an individual's psychological or physical characteristics. Such a message contradicts the 'true' way of thinking, which demands that there is only one method for knowing the world, which by default means that there are a few people who understand the world better than others. With this logic, the disabled are disabled in the first place because they do not have entry to this information and truth. They are determined by a scale of potential and capacity, and are, in this matter, considered abnormal. It is very clear that Charlie and Christopher are different than those who are not autistic and is not considered to be normal, but since when were there requirements to be ‘normal?’

The clothing and textile industry has a significant share in the global market- employing over a billion people worldwide and catering to the wants of millions more. With the increasing incomes and the purchasing power of people, clothing sales have gone up to 60% in the last ten years. According to a study, we now consume one-third more clothing than even four years ago, and discard it after wearing for just a few times or indeed, even once. There also has been a shift in the way clothing and fashions are being sold, with the rise of ‘Value Fashion’ available in the supermarkets with the weekly groceries, like in stores like Hypercity, Big Bazaar and D-mart, and High Street stores who sell specifically on low prices, rather than durability.

Cheap fashion equals disposable fashion- encourages more consumption, creating a vicious cycle. This increases the pressure on clothing manufacturers and their suppliers to squeeze out more output in less time, affecting those at the bottom end of the production chain, adversely, who actually make these clothes. Today, fast fashion brands like H&M, Zara, and Forever 21 depend on vastly underpaid workers (as little as $2-4/hour) to make clothing at alarming rates to meet consumer demand.

Hence, Ethical fashion and ethically made represents an approach to the design, sourcing, manufacture of clothing and accessories that maximises benefits to people and communities, while minimising impact on the environment. Ethical fashion brands are often known for the following features: employing artisans with traditional skill sets, providing cruelty free products, using certified and/or safe factories, avoiding all sweatshop labour, etc.

So now that we have a bit of an idea about what ethical fashion is, the next question becomes: for what reason is it essential? Ethical fashion is important for a number of different reasons — In this present reality where harming natural and social ramifications are considered 'typical' by our design framework, we are seriously in need of a shift; not least among them being the fact that fashion is the second most polluting industry after oil and gas.

Different Approaches to Ethical Fashion

Different ethical fashion brands approach responsible production in different ways. Some brands are committed to vegan production; because veganism is a movement that is committed to minimising the harm that is caused to animals to fulfil our needs, vegans don’t buy clothing made from materials that exploit animals (like silk, leather, wool, etc.)

Examples: Matt and Nat, Alas, Disguise (cosmetic brand), Kanabis.

There are many other brands which focus on sustainability through the use of organic fibres that use less chemicals and pesticides in their production and, therefore, cause less environmental harm.

Examples: Celeste Tesoriero and Nico.

Similarly, there are brands focusing on equality for all people and various gender equality labels have come up in recent years to match those beliefs with actions.

Examples: Kowtow and Her

It is also important to remember, though, that ethical fashion is not just about the labels people buy or prefer. It is also about how often are some particular garments bought and for what reason. The fast fashion system has conditioned us to believe that buying fashion every single week is the ‘norm’. And this mind-set can seriously exacerbate the fact that Australians already send $500 million worth of clothing and textiles to landfill each year.

Contemporary Times

Until very recently, ethically sound fashion and sustainability, had to a great extent, been avoided by the fashion and textile industries. However, the groundswell of consumer awareness and media coverage of global environmental issues and concerns about ethical practices in the supply chain has created pressure, which has now precipitated action by the large clothing companies such as Marks and Spencer, GAP, and H&M. There has been a fundamental paradigm shift as we enter a new era of ethical consumption. Consumers, today, are demanding to know more about how, where and in what conditions their garments are being made. In a dramatic turnaround in corporate social responsibility in textile, dyeing and manufacturing businesses, companies that were previously seen as a major part of the environmental problem are now becoming a part of the solution. Pretty much every magazine and exchange diary from Vanity Fair to Business Week and Time has a 'Green Issue' since 2005.

Analysis of Daniel Keyes’s Flowers for Algernon

In Daniel Keyes’ novel Flowers for Algernon, Charlie, a 32-year-old intellectually disabled man, undergoes a newly researched surgical procedure that turns him into a genius. Being intellectually disabled means having severe limitations when it comes to mental and cognitive capabilities. Many with this disability have an incredibly troublesome time adjusting to life, and generally, have IQs equal to or less than 70 (Berger 1). Charlie’s IQ of 68 meant that his mental age was younger than his physical age, which dictated that he could not perform as well as other people his age. However, after his life-changing operation, his mental state age increased exponentially, despite him still being the same age, 32. In Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Christopher, a 15-year-old boy with Asperger’s Syndrome, is determined to solve his neighbor’s dog's murder. Portraying the protagonist as a teenager who struggles with communication is what shapes the complexly profound novel (Cline 1).

The research question is “How do the approaches to mental disabilities contrast in Flowers for Algernon and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time?” This is a question worth researching further and answering because of each book’s historical circumstances, and how this reflects society's response to mental disabilities at the time. Flowers for Algernon was published when the lack of research and understanding of mental impediments led to the rejection and ostracization of people with disability. Although people with autism are still not embraced as much as they should be, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time provides further insight into the thoughts and feelings towards the disorder. This book was written in the 21st century, therefore, more of a modern view of the disorder is established. Comparing and contrasting these two books will reflect society’s views on autism during the two different time periods. Is society still telling people to ‘be unique,’ while suppressing the autistic or is there genuinely a drastic shift in societal understanding reflected in the differences between the books?

Pity

Daniel Keyes highlights the feeling of what happens right after Charlie’s superior intellectual thinking is stripped away from him intentionally, which enables readers to easily empathize and feel pity for Charlie. He reverts back to being a man with a very low IQ, after achieving a lot in his short time of being intellectually gifted. Despite the valiant efforts of the protagonist to remain a hero/genius, his mental disability will forever impede him and define him indefinitely. This results in Charlie feeling ostracized as if he is not be a part of society. Keyes perceives that Charlie's relapse, in spite of the fact that he comes back to his original state, is a cause of a disaster. This “tragedy” is perceived as pity toward the start of the novel in light of the fact that Charlie's handicap makes him be feeble and uninformed (Cline 3). By the end of the novel, the disability causes the book's reasonable hero, the astute Charlie, to cease to exist. All that had made the postoperative Charlie a different character—reason, love, creative ability, sexuality—deteriorates. Thus, it is as though smart Charlie is biting the dust. Furthermore, not only do the readers understand Charlie’s quick rise and demise, Charlie himself is able to grasp the situation, at both intelligence levels. How readers are to react to this demise must be assessed, however, when the smart Charlie is contrasted with his preoperative state.

Setting up this sentiment of complete pity for Charlie is fundamental as it gives background to the postoperative Charlie, who progresses toward becoming hyper-aware of his present state as a growing genius just as his previous condition of wretched, impaired man disappears. Keyes’s use of characterization reveals that when Charlie ends up smart, he turns into a haughty, narrow-minded man to everyone around him. This juxtaposition portrays an interesting appreciation for the mentally crippled because, despite the fact that they are unaware, such obliviousness is desirable over the grandiose narcissists in the scholarly world. This appreciation is fleeting, however, as readers before long move their loyalty to the hyper-clever Charlie who seethes against the individuals who ‘made’ him, while in the meantime grieving the incidental quality of his creation that drives him back to being crippled.

Never having needed to see the initial Charlie as the equivalent to the genius Charlie, readers can change their minds about a man they first felt sorry for, into the man they eventually idolize; like dying, his disability eradicates how great he had become (Cline 108). Readers are left with the memory of Charlie who cherished Alice, his great love, and ached to make something enduring and useful for humankind. In a way, readers feel pity for the ‘death’ of intellectually gifted Charlie, just as they feel pity for the Charlie that has reverted and will no longer be treated as an equal. Mental disability, similar to death, has killed the likelihood for any new, positive encounters to happen.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time

Christopher’s naivety and trust in others not only forces readers to sympathize with him but to also relate with him and his childlike innocence. Christopher considers truth to be an anchoring standard of the world. If he is told the truth by someone, he can confide in them, but if they lie and he realizes, he panics. Since he’s diagnosed with Aspergers, he lacks full consciousness of reality. This leads to readers pitying him because of his naivety and innocence. Christopher additionally discovers that reality can sting as much as falsehood could. He is always mindful of his physical security; hauling his knife relaxes him because of the fact that he can protect himself while being able to inflict harm on others if need be (Haddon 13). Readers pity him because despite knowing how to protect himself physically, Christopher doesn't have a clue how to defend himself emotionally. He, in some cases, reacts to his feelings of being hurt with his fists. One such instance is when he physically battles his dad, Ed, when Ed approaches him about his mom's illicit relationship (82). Christopher trusts reality will protect him from emotional damage, but as the readers already know and he comes to learn, that’s not how things work, further enabling the reader’s pity for the teen.

Since Christopher at first structured his life to truth and lie, he opposes envisioning circumstances other than those that really exist. He doesn't want people to consider how the deceased may respond to current circumstances since they can't contemplate a world that goes on after their demise. Doing so, Christopher figures out how to shield himself from troubling considerations of his mother, who he thinks is dead, or of how things may have been in the event that she was still with Christopher. Christopher believes truth-telling is an indication of adoration, particularly seen in his dad. However, the reality about his mom winds up harming him. Ed finds the reality of his significant other's departure from him too difficult to even consider dealing with, and so he imagines that lying to Christopher will ensure less grief for both of them. 

Lying about Judy's passing shields his dad from managing his very own feelings, but he thinks that lying is the more considerate and selfless option in this case; it is better for Christopher to think his mom is dead than to believe that she has relinquished him. Due to Christopher's commitment to truth, however, he can't see that his dad may have meant well in deceiving him, regardless of whether it was wrong or not. He feels the agony of reality, which in this circumstance has let him down as much as his folks have, placing him into peril instead of guarding him. Pity is incorporated here because Christopher is easily misunderstood and it seems like others are making important decisions for him when he is very much capable of making his own choices. Fast Fashion Comes with a Cost Textile

Did you know that roughly 20% of the world's manufacturing pollution is caused by fabric dyes and treatments? North Americans consume the largest amount of the latest fast fashion items globally. Most of which is dyed with toxic chemicals that pollute many countries worldwide. Our environment isn’t as healthy as it should be and fast fashion isn’t helping. Textile factories dump dyed wastewater into local lakes and ponds. This causes habitat destruction and many health issues to the people who live in these polluted areas. This is a serious problem for both the planet and its inhabitants.

As you may have noticed, many of the fast fashion items textile factories produce are dyed in pretty vibrant colors that catch your eye. Colors like these are needed to be dyed with harmful dyes that pollute the freshwaters of many countries including Bangladesh, China, and Indonesia to name a few. Buriganga, a river in Bangladesh, “is incapable of supporting almost any animal life” (Fashionista). The water is contaminated with the dyed wastewater and it poisons the animals that live in these freshwater ecosystems. Some animals may drink from the rivers and get poisoned as well.

The polluted water isn’t just bad for animals, these chemicals are also a threat humans. The toxic water gets infiltrated into the groundwater that is used for drinking water, “In China, estimates say 90 percent of the local groundwater is polluted” (Carmen Busquets). Not only are people able to drink the chemicals, they are also able to breathe them in. The odor from the chemicals rises from the rivers and gets into the air, “Teachers struggle to concentrate, as if they were choking on air. Students often become lightheaded and dizzy” (The New York Times). Contact with the chemicals can: trigger allergic reactions, irritate the skin, and even lead to a risk of cancer.

Using filters can drain the dye from the water so the dye will be able to be used again. One might think this would be too expensive, think again. Using cheap metal oxide filters will not only save money, using them will save water too, “The process uses a novel nanostructured material that can suck dye molecules out of wastewater like a sponge. Made from nickel oxide, it can then be heated in an oven to burn off the dye molecules - allowing the material to be reused” (Chemistry World) The water will be recycled to be used in more clothing rather than emptying the dyes into freshwater. Another solution would be to use organic dyes that aren’t as harmful. Buying textiles that are dyed organically contain less chemicals and “less water is required in the rinse process and less dye runs off in the water”(Gaia Conceptions).

To conclude, many textile factories worldwide are contributing to dye and chemical pollution. The factories empty the harmful wastewater into local freshwater. This isn’t good for the environment nor the people that live in it. It destroys ecosystems and the odor causes people to get light headed. To reduce the pollution, factories can install metal oxide filters to filter out the dye to use it again. A way you can help is to buy organic clothing that is dyed organically from plants and clay. Next time you buy a shirt, think about all of the wasted water used to dye that shirt and if it was worth it.

I wanted to look into exactly how the fashion industry is harming our earth, while also looking at ways we can fix it.

Deep Dive: The fashion industry is the second largest contributor to pollution behind the oil industry. This is something that people tend to overlook, but there are many sources outlining the environmental impacts. Deborah Drew wrote “The Apparel Industry’s Environmental Impact in 6 Graphics” which takes a deep dive into all of the ways the production of the clothes we wear are hurting our earth. Drew highlights the world of fast fashion that we are living in, where a new trend is out nearly every week. People are buying more clothes, wearing them less, and throwing them out at an alarming rate. Clothing companies put pressure on people through advertisements, media, etc. to make consumers feel that they need to buy these clothes. This may seem like no big deal. When we think of pollution wer think mostly of plastic bottles and gasoline or CO2 emissions. We don’t even stop to think about how our clothes were made and what kind of impact that has, or where our clothes go after we throw them out.

Drew discusses these exact things in her article. To grow enough cotton to make one T - shirt farmers must use 2700 liters of water (Drew). On top of this, the cotton industry needs to use pest/insecticides. Cotton accounts for the use of about 24% of insecticides and 11% of pesticides globally (Drew). After cotton production there is even more pollution that happens. Textile production uses about 5 trillion liters of water each year for fabric dying (Drew). Grown fabrics, like cotton tend to use a lot of water and pesticides to produce. We may think that man-made fabrics like polyester are better. However, these fabrics also cause problems for our environment. Drew points out that about 1.5 trillion pounds of greenhouse gases were released into our atmosphere due to polyester production. It isn’t hard to see that we simply can’t win when it comes to our love for fashion.

In Patsy Perry’s article The Environmental Costs of Fast Fashion, there is focus on textile dyeing and how the dyes and chemicals used affect not only our water quality, but the people who come in contact with it. Perry mentions that textile dying is the second largest water polluter. Clothes are often produced in countries where there are limited laws on chemical disposal. The chemicals used to dye fabrics like polyester or cotton are dumped into local rivers and lakes. Local people end up getting sick from this water that they use to drink, cook with, and clean. Perry also mentions that many countries have been testing the chemicals used on clothes to see what their impacts are. Come of these chemicals have been seen to be toxic, carcinogenic, bioaccumulative, and hormone disrupters. The way our clothes are produced doesn’t just harm the earth we live on, but hurts our wildlife and even ourselves. Even organic fabrics have an impact on their environment. Organic cotton cuts out the use of chemicals during farming, but the fabric still has to be made and dyed and sewn (Perry). There are so many options when it comes to buying clothes, and if we want to shop smart, how do we know where to start?

Perry talks in her article about ways that we as consumers can help make a difference. She points to the brand Patagonia because of their use of recycled fabrics. Patagonia and other brands are making polyester out of recycled bottles, recycled cotton, and organic cotton (Perry). It is brands like these that make the smallest footprint. There are charities, like Love Your Clothes from Wrap that teaches people how to shop smartly, what brands are best to buy from, gives education on the production process, and teaches the right way to dispose of your clothes (Perry). We can also look to buying more from consignment or thrift shops. There are options out there that help you reduce your footprint. However, overall it is important for us to simply limit what we wear. We first need to stop buying so much, and wear what we have longer.

Take Away: I believe that becoming educated on a subject is the first step to improving in that area. After reading about the environmental impacts of the fashion industry, I realized that there are actually a lot of ways that we as consumers can help make a change. Limiting or consumption is the first step, and it is a really simple one. We don’t need to be buying new clothes every week or month, instead we need to be owning clothes that will last, that we like, and that will be worn more than once or twice. If everyone limited their consumption of clothing, companies would be forced to slow down production. Consumers can also take things another step forward by putting pressure on companies to change their ways. Once upon a time, Nike almost went bankrupt due to people boycotting their use of sweatshops, and they cleaned up their act.

Consumers have all of the power when it comes to the profit that companies earn. We can choose to only buy from companies that track and limit their environmental footprint. We can buy from consignment shops, or do clothing swaps with our friends. We can even put pressure on political figures to ensure that companies follow laws. There are plenty of ways that we can enjoy the clothes we love, while also making sure our earth is healthy. I will go forward limiting my consumption of clothing, and making sure to only give my money to brands that deserve it.

Flowers for Algernon Monologue

Charlie Gordon was a very kind and caring man. He was an example of how all humans should live their lives. And no not as a retard. As a happy and motivated being. Charlie started out his life having a very low IQ. He always seemed to see himself as a child because he hadn’t matured mentally like someone with no disability. Because of his low IQ, he was always looked down upon by the people he considered his friends. Of course Charlie wouldn’t have known. He saw all of his friends as people that he could never be as good as. But frankly it was the other way around. When Charlie had the opportunity to get picked to be a test subject for the intellegence altering operation he was all over it. He felt like this was his chance to be like everyone else. Charlie was picked and he got the operation and it practically turned him from a retarded human to a near genius. But this brought Charlie a new understanding of himself and the people around him. 

The first thing Charlie started to understand after his operation was that the people he called friends and that he could never be as good as, were just dumb little jerks. He understood that they were making fun of him. He realized that he didn’t want to be like them at all. They weren’t his friends. They were his audience. They were using him as entertainment for themselves. Charlie’s only real friends were Algernon and Miss Kinnian. When Charlie thought about it, he understood that he was being overlooked by the people that don’t have a disability, but that did not change the way he lived his life. He still did everything he wanted, not what they wanted him to do. Charlie’s understanding of how people were treating him had changed. When Charlie had a low IQ, he viewed his actual friends differently than after the operation. Before the operation he viewed Miss Kinnian as a friend and he used her as motivation. 

Over time, Charlie started maturing mentally into an adult like human. But with this brought new emotions that Charlie had never felt before. Charlie fell in love with Alice Kinnian. At first Charlie was overwhelmed by his feelings, but then it started to ease out after he took her out on a few dates. Charlie was starting to understand the complexity of relationships. He knew that for it to work, he had to be himself, because that is what Alice loved about him. With his new IQ and knowledge, he was able to understand what he was feeling and why he was feeling it. Charlie was a good man. He understood better than anyone else how to deal with his surroundings. Whether it was his feelings or how other people were treating him. He understood his place in the world, being a retard or a genius. He used the struggles of gaining new emotions and a low IQ to understand himself as a person, as well as the world and the people around him. This is what made Charlie an amazing human being. He will be missed.

An Investigation into Cancer in Firefighters

The fire service has in recent years begun to introduce several significant studies regarding finding exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) causing an elevated increase cancer incidence in firefighters. Studies are targeting the increased rate of cancer diagnosis in firefighters, through testing of personal protective equipment (PPE), equipment, trucks and facilities. Studies are linking dirty gear to contact exposure of cancer causing carcinogens. Researchers (Keir, J. L., Akhtar, U. S., Matschke, D. M., White, P. A., Kirkham, T. L., Chan, H. M., & Blais, J. M. 2020) examined cultural change and cancer risk reduction in the fire service with “clean gear as the new badge of honor”. Their research showed that 20% of firefighters in their study currently see dirty gear as a badge of honor (inverse from the historical 80%). The researcher analysis could impact the understanding of the vital continual need for education and training in use of cleaning PPE and decontamination of gear. By reviewing the data, the fire service can prevent exposure to carcinogens by recognizing and implementing cleaning of PPE and impacts at the fire station including storing gear, and exhaust control systems.

This study will attempt to evaluate causation of exposure to cancer causing carcinogens and the link to education and training in the fire service. This will be accomplished by examining surveys distributed to firefighters in Southern Nash County. These stations would include Bailey, Spring Hope, Standhope, Middlesex and Ferrells fire departments. And by studying data gathered to determined the level of education and need for continual education and training in PPE cleaning.

This study will attempt to answer the following questions:

  • What level of knowledge do active firefighters have of agents that cause increased risk of incidents of cancer?
  • What types of cleaning methods are currently being used for cleaning of PPE after fire suppression?
  • Are cleaning wipes being provided to begin the personal decon process? Studies show that cleaning wipes can reduce PAH contamination by 54%.
  • Are fire stations equipped with direct source control exhaust systems?
  • Are industrial washing machines being used after each fire suppression event?
  • Where is PPE stored when it’s not in use?
  • What type material is a fire fighters hood made from Nomex or another particulate blocking hood?

Significance of the Study

This study will provide fire departments with data that will demonstrate the level of training and education that has been completed and what level of continual education and training needs to be done. It proposes to analyze research on cleaning containments from PPE, storage of PPE and cleaning of fire trucks as well as other fire suppression equipment. The results will be useful in guiding continue education and training to fire departments to work on decreasing the incidents of cancer diagnosis in firefighters from contaminated PPE. This and other research may lead to life saving measures for firefighters that put their life on the line saving others.

Literature Review

Risk of Cancer Among Firefighters

Sam Youakim (2006), with the Division of Occupational Medicine indicates that firefighters are exposed to “to a large number of known or suspected carcinogens during their firefighting activity, including benzene, benzidine, 1,3-butadiene, dioxins, dibenzofurans,

polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, asbestos, formaldehyde, and acrylonitrile.” These carcinogens are linked to cancer in the colon, kidneys, bladder, and brain as well as non Hodgkin’s lymphoma and leukemia. Youakim (2006), completed a computer search of databases from 1966-2005, he found that an accurate quantitative estimates of firefighter exposure was logistically difficult to obtain. His study used time increments subcohort < 10 years, > 10 years, > 20 years and > 30 years, a fixed-effect model. Youakim (2006) reviewed 6 studies and noted a lack of consensus. Several older published studies validate an increased risk of cancer among firefighters with a level of certainty that work as a firefighter is related to brain cancer. Studies found other cancer malignancies were inconsistent and did not show sufficient evidence. This can be influenced by various factors including different job tasks, and historic changes in firefighting activities.

A 2018, United Kingdom study identified that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) exposure and studies completed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NOISH) have shown built up toxins on PPE with repeated use and increased exposure. Stec, A. A., Dickens, K. E., Salden, M., Hewitt, F. E., Watts, D. P., Houldsworth, P. E., & Martin, F. L. (2018) reported due to environmental component exposure to carbon combustion polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) firefighters have an increased risk of cancer than the general population. This study stated that the neck area was the primary source of dermal exposure due to minimal protection. This study links PAH to cancer diagnosis however is was not explicitly proven as the causative agent. This study was completed at two fire and rescue stations on the southern coast of England. Subjects were randomly chosen, wipe samples were collected of skin and personal protective equipment (PPE) as well as the work environment. The storage methods

of the firefighters gear were observed during the study. The study found increase concentration on hands, and increased amount of PAH found in masks. The study concluded that non practice of the use PPE and cleaning of the PPE can adversely affects health of firefighters.

A study with collaboration between Ottawa Fire Service, The University of Ottawa, The University of Toronto and Health Centers was conducted with four fire stations. Firefighters (N=28) were selected from stations based on call volume and were provided a sample collection “toolbox” with collecting gear and instruction manual. This study is based on meta analysis of 32 studies completed related to excess cancer risk for firefighters (LeMasters et al., 2006). Two groups of chemicals were studied, metal and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). Urine analysis completed before and after on shift suppression, on average there was an increase in PAH metabolite levels. Sample collection of gear, storage with wiping PPE before and after fire events, samples were taken between January and October 2015. Found significant amount of airborne PAH post suppression as well as dermal exposure. Companion studies and earlier studies (Fent et al., 2014; Britz-McKibbin et al., 2016; Keir et al., 2017) found a major route of PAH exposure through dermal exposure. Noted that stations that performed cleaning of PPE and provided a second set of PPE lead to a decreased exposure. Study recommend continue to develop intervention strategies for site decontamination and protocols to minimize cross containment.

Cultural Change and Cancer Risk Reduction

A study conducted by Harrison, T. R., Yang, F., Anderson, D., Morgan, S. E., Muhamad, J. W., Talavera, E., … Kobetz, E. (2017), concluded that in the Palm Beach County Fire.

Department the “epidemic” of cancer had surpassed heart disease, data showed that there was a decrease in line of duty deaths from injuries since the 1970’s with the exception to 9/11. Cancer diagnosis have increased with Boston reporting line of duty deaths related to cancer from 2002-2014 to have increased 67%. Fire and rescue companies have resilience in the face of danger however strong cultures can affect that resilience. Dirty bunker gear is a symbol of hard work and a cultural stigma is now being seen as a health risk. Dirty gear is known to lead to contact exposure of carcinogens and increased risk of a cancer diagnosis. Historically 80% of fire fighters saw dirty gear as “badge of honor”, this study shows that down to 20%. Change is happening from the bottom up and top down, change is happening in training academies. Cultural change is slower. “The Model of Change Processes for Risk Reduction and Resilience is presented as a framework for cultural change to reduce risk and increase resilience”.

Testing of PPE and skin for learning the pathways of exposure was studied by Fent, K. W., Alexander, B., Roberts, J., Robertson, S., Toennis, C., Sammons, D., … Horn, G. (2017), they studied the contamination of PPE and the skin and what was the effectiveness of the decontamination process. They completed a study with 41 firefighters including 3 crews with 12 firefighters per fire suppression session. Performed wipe samples pre and post fire suppression. Contamination of PPE and skin as well as field decontamination was limited by size. The study concluded that PPE, skin, neck and hands were contaminated with PAH during fire suppression tasks, but noted the level was varied by what job assignment the firefighter performed. Contamination levels increased with each fire if not decontaminated after each fire. Wet soap was found to be the most effective for decontaminating. This study provided a greater understanding to exposure pathways and measures taken to reduce exposure.

Firefighter Cancer Registry Enacted

On July 7, 2018, President Trump signed Firefighter Cancer Registry Act of 2018. This bill requires the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to develop and maintain a voluntary registry for firefighters. Part of the information provided will include age of diagnosis and years of service, it will use existing state data to assist with compiling the information. The bill “requires the CDC to develop a strategy to maximize participation, develop guidance for state agencies, encourage inclusion among participants and to seek feedback from nonfederal experts. The CDC would also be required to ensure the data collected is made public and accessible for research” (“President Trump Signs,” 2018). The CDC registry’s goals will use” the registry to raise awareness about better ways to protect firefighters from known cancer risks, including advancements in the design and care of personal protective equipment and practices that can lower firefighters’ exposure to hazardous substances’ ( CDC, 2019). The ultimate goal is to make advancements in the design and care of PPE and invest and promote in practices to lower firefighters exposure to hazardous materials.

Methodology

Subjects

The target population for this study is paid firefighters in Southern Nash County. The sample selected for the survey will include various positions within the department. This study will draw its samples from firefighters in the following departments: Bailey, Spring Hope, Standhope, Middlesex and Ferrells with email distribution to firefighters within the departments (N= approximately 165). This study will use a frequency distribution sampling technique. To achieve a maximum number of participants an email distribution list was chosen for the survey to be administered. Department Chiefs report that all firefighters at the selected stations have access to their department email and this was the best method to send out the survey. Instrument

Survey software from Surveymonkey.com will be the instrument used to collect data to include but not limited to cleaning PPE, storage of PPE, exhaust systems and use of cleaning wipes linking increased levels of PAH and exposure to cancer causing agents. The decision to use Surveymonkey.com for this research was due to the software’s ability to get responses in real time, analyze data to reveal insights and easily share presentation ready charts and reports. The availability and ease of access is another reason to use the Surveymonkey.com. Trying to reach firefighters at these various stations to complete a paper survey would be challenging, requiring a great amount of time on delivery and picking up surveys. Using a mailed-in survey would require extra costs. Surveymonkey.com allows for surveys to be administered via mobile, web services and social media. The survey can be completed on their free time from their phone or computer.

Surveymonkey.com uses hundreds of free, professionally designed survey templates built by expert survey methodologist (Surveymonkey, 2017). This accommodates the need for time with no cost involved. Some of the most commonly used survey question types are multiple choice, rating scales, comment/easy box, and demographic questions (Surveymonkey, 2017). This research study will use rating scale and demographic questions to analyze cleaning procedure for PPE and equipment that link the finding of cancer causing agents and need for further education/training on cleaning to prevent exposure to cancer causing agents. The rating scale questions will use a “Likert” scale to analyze and group data. Demographic questions gather information about the participant’s background, while keeping participant information anonymous.

Procedure

An email will be sent to all members of the Southern Nash County fire departments. The email will provide a link with a message that states: “Your participation in this survey will help researchers attempt to evaluate cleaning procedures for PPE as well as storage of PPE and equipment to decrease the risk of exposure to cancer causing agents.” The link will send the participates directly to the questionnaire in which they will begin to read and answer questions.

The survey results will be sent to Surveymonkey and the data will then be analyzed. The individuals completing the survey will remain anonymous as the survey does not require names to be posted to complete the survey, after four weeks the survey will be closed and all the data will be collected. After the data collection and the data is analyzed an email will be sent to the chief’s of the fire departments included in the study. This will provide information to allow for increased training on proper cleaning and decontaminating of PPE and equipment. Information can also be used to write grants for industrial washers and other decontaminating equipment.

Summary

Studies have shown that firefighters are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer at an increased rate than the average person. Cancer in the fire service has become an epidemic. Over the last few years discussion of how to address the rise in cancer diagnosis in firefighters has become a hot topic. Larger departments are addressing the issue with providing a second set of PPE and conducting gross field decontamination. The process of can be expensive and smaller department especially local volunteer departments may not have the money to be able to afford to utilize those expensive techniques for decreasing the risk for exposure. Further education and training to these departments is vital to save lives and to decrease the diagnosis of cancer. This study will assist with volunteer fire departments to work towards improving education and training in the need for decontamination and cleaning of PPE and storage of PPE to prevent further exposure to cancer causing carcinogens.

To accommodate different perspectives of an audience, business writing utilizes APA and MLA format to present various expression of writing for college and career success.

Business writing entails of styles that pertain to its audience. Specific styles are used in different forms of business writing such as letters, formal reports, emails, and memos. Business majors must be able to master their discipline style of writing for success in presenting information to their audience. Knowledge in various style of writing, helps the writer convey their objective and relatable to the audience.

Recognizing the audience expectations determines the purpose of the subject matter and the style of writing needed for presentation. Information contents are formatted in relation to the recipient. For example, to address a formal audience. business writers use APA style to cite sources in economic research letters or reports; therefore, achieving a practical and objective analysis. Excessive use of wordings or metaphorical language does not appeal to a formal audience. In his article, Martin Dick asserts that “describing your strategy in enough pages to require a staple, but not so many to require a binder, will also force you to explain it in language the people who are supposed to approve it can understand” (41). APA style writing provides the writer with a concise form of relaying information through headings and subheadings. This conclusively provides the audience with a concise transition from each major section of the letter.

Verbal usage in a writer’s contents can be the beginning and continuity of a business relationship. Adapting to diversity in business establishments is a key factor, in recognizing the medium needed to solidify engagement in writing. For instance, business emails or memos can be tailored informally towards a familiar platform by using MLA style. This style permits subjective and figurative language, that complements personal expression and views verbalized in writing. It helps project the tone in their writing, “studies suggest that the presence and form of various textual cues in e-mails can be used to analyze the presumed intentions of senders/authors, their impression management strategies, and the nature of their relationships with recipients/addressees/readers” (Caron et al 10). This leads to a mutual understanding between the sender and the receiver, thus determining how the reader responds to the content.

Proficient writing skills are built with learning and nurturing the basics of writing in business. Students who major in Business Administration are required to have good writing skills, that are sustainable for success in college and beyond. This can be acquired by outlining, organizing, editing and revising the content of their work. Teresa Welder states that “The use of a multi-step process for writing and the continued practice of the steps can be instrumental in improving writing skills and providing students with a skill that is vital for both academic and career success” (64). This enables the student to refine and organize their ideas in a coherent manner. Practicing and developing good writing skills in college is essential because it directly reflects the student’s writing capability in the workforce. It enhances their career prospects and credibility. Business organizations tend to associate quality writing skills with professional efficiency. Resulting as a hiring criterion for students in business majors.

Writing in business discipline consists of diversity in style, format, and context. However, the objective remains to be able to provide quality information and interaction with the audience. As well as, modifying the writing contents to the audience interests. Execution of organized and professional writing is made practical, by using APA and MLA format as an underlying principle for structure.

History of Women in Firefighting

Introduction

The word “firefighter” mainly represent the image of a fearless extremely trained team full of masculinity. Because according to society it’s the profession of men. But in 1970s women also join in this section as professional and volunteer. But the percentage of women as firefighters is less than 20%. Because this profession is mainly known as a male-dominated or exclusively male profession.

But in the modern era, women have started choosing fire service as their profession and also including themselves as fire chief, volunteer, etc. But still, if you Google the picture of firefighter then the result will be related to masculinity. But nowadays, Women have been functioning successfully as career firefighters and officers for more than 25 years and as volunteers for much longer.

Let’s discuss the history of women as a firefighter. According to Wikipedia, Many old civilizations had a trained team of organized firefighting. One of this earliest recorded of fire services was in Ancient Rome. The Aboriginal Australians had been fighting against wildfire since very early and women were also being involved with them.

Firefighting became more organized from the 18th century onwards, led with the rise of insurance companies and then with the rise of government fire services in the 19th century. In 1818, Molly Williams becomes the first female firefighter in the United States. She joined a volunteer engine company as a slave in New York City. In that time Young women in the United Kingdom were taught fire drills, including high ladder rescues.

During World War II, women also joined the fire services of the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, though mostly in administrative and support roles. In 1970, as a result of the second-wave feminism movement and also equal employment opportunity legislation, occupational obstacles to women were removed. The first female firefighter in the United Kingdom was joined in 1976, while the first in New Zealand joined in 1981. Many fire departments required a different type of requirement to pass tough fitness tests, which became an unofficial barrier to women joining. (women organization , n.d.)

As a result, it leads to court cases in a number of countries. Brenda Berkman won a lawsuit against the New York City Fire Department for its restrictive fitness test in 1982. 40 women including herself then joined as its first female firefighters. There was a similar lawsuit which led to the Supreme Court of Canada ruling in 1999 that fire departments could not use restrictive fitness tests unless they could justify the need for them.

According to an article, Almost 70% of firefighters work on as volunteer basis. But the risks which they embrace this profession and put their lives in line to protect us in emergency situations is huge. They carry a lot of responsibility on their shoulders, working in accidental conditions that need a lot of mental and physical strength. These professionals training give them knowledge and training about emergency medical care and educate the public on public safety. (Picincu, 2019)

And basically, the point of view of our society is quite masculine that’s why they think that women are weaker than man. They are born to do house chores and raise the children. They think that they are superior and women are inferior. And women don’t need to do any kind of job also don’t have any kind of ability and requirement to build up their career. And this is absolutely bias.

It’s absolutely right that firefighting isn’t for everyone. People who are seriously afraid of heights or hazard spaces, or who don’t respond well in a crisis are unlikely to be attracted to the job. Some people prefer a typical business schedule to work 24-hour or other overnight shifts. Other people may ignore the physical, manual-labor facts of the job.

But there are lots of women who have enough grief, talents or attributes to join this job. They are also enough strength to become a firefighter. But why the participation of women in this section is less than a man. By doing my research and got some points. But let’s discuss the main five problems why they don’t want to be a firefighter.

Stereotypical point of view of the society: In an industry that is male dominated, it’s hard to work by knowing that no one will accept you just because you are a girl. When anyone hears the word “firefighter,” they think of a tall, strong, beefy man, not small shape woman. So, for those, it’s quite tough, sometimes it’s impossible to choose firefighting as a career for women. Because there is typically a lot of things which will make the way tougher to achieve the goal. If you walk hear it in uniform or in turnout gear, comments such as, “You’re a firefighter? But you’re so small” and “How do you wear that? It weighs as much as you do”. It’s just destroying the inner confidence of a girl. There are so many girls who can lift more weight than a boy. Just because of this type of stereotypical mentality thousand girls can move towards their dreams.

In an article which was published in June 2011 which was written by Erica Blockman. In that article, she wrote that, one thing she wish most men should remember about women that the idea that they don’t belong to this occupation is absolutely wrong. She also mention that for every handful of women who shouldn’t be in the field should remind that there are also handful of men who don’t belong as well. But the society always notice when a woman can’t pull her own weight because there is a smaller number of us, so everyone is always looking and always through comment.

But who has been looking at the percentage of men who are horribly overweight and who will only run or hike if their lives depend on it? Or the ones who only depend on their job and don’t have any consciousness about physical fitness? Regardless of this fact, however, she think that women will always get the minimum credit of any kind of success. She also said that if we can accept that, there are a few things that we should have to found to help with overcoming the challenges of any male dominated industry our state of mind and our physical fitness.

When we talk about the importance of command presence and confidence, we are talking about being mentally strong--not physically strong. Erica Blockman became a more confident firefighter and individual through physical training. The mental and physical go hand-in-hand. If we know how to train and push ourselves to the limit physically, we can be able to break mental barriers as well--the barriers that prevent you from becoming a stronger person. The more we physically challenge ourselves, the more we realize that our body is more capable and stronger than anyone believed. If we know this, we also know that we are constantly challenging ourselves to meet new heights. But we can’t do it simply by going to the gym or doing functional training alone. (blockman, 2011)

In this article, she said that strength is in our mind. If anyone is mentally enough strong she can purchase her dream. But our society thinks that we women are born as the weakest creature. So they raise us like that and make us weaker. Because they think that a girl only has to stay in the home and have to raise children and have to do house chores. So she has to be sensitive. For this that girls can be able to gain enough grief to join as a firefighter.

Lacking family support: The basic thing that everyone need is family support. If one's family is supportive then the task becomes easier. But basically, every girl is not so lucky to have that support. The first basic think women need to do as a firefighter is responding to fire alarms and emergency calls quickly at any time. Which is quite impossible for a girl without family support. If she doesn’t have both family and in-laws support it’s totally impossible.

Moreover, the basic thing a firefighter need to do is they need to prevent and minimizing fire damage as much as they can. Identifying hazardous situations that how much damage have occurred is also a major activity. They also need to respond to fire alarms and emergency calls quickly. Writing reports on emergency incidents, inspecting and cleaning up fire spot as their field work.

They also have to operate, check and maintain firefighting equipment and other necessary things. Using fire extinguishers, climbing ladders and breaking through walls another important work. Attending workshops and training programs is also necessary for them to learn how to respond. They can also learn how to drive fire trucks and other specialty vehicles from this workshop. And rescuing fire victims is their ultimate goal. (Picincu, 2019)

The first women firefighter of Bangladesh is Nasrin Sultana, 48 Years old who work as a Warehouse inspector, Fire Services & Civil Defense. Nasrin received the President Award for her courageous service to people in disaster areas, fire victims, and fire control. There are 35 firefighters who work under her command at the Lalbagh Fire Station. In an interview, a reporter asks that “Who is your biggest supporter?” In reply, she said that “My elder sister Hasina Begum who gave me the courage to pursue my career”. (nawaz, 2017) So we can see how important family support is for women.

But as the social point of view girls are not fit enough for this profession. Because as their stereotypical mentality women are born as weak. And as we practice patriarchal rules so the family will never support a girl to become a firefighter. But by any chance, if her family accept her proposal but after getting married it’s impossible to continue this job.

Male vs. female requirements: The entry requirements are the same for every firefighter. As a girl firefighter, she may need to exercise more and focus on building up her strength. In this process, she will be able to lift heavy equipment, climb up huge ladders and work night shifts.

Therefore, it's mandatory to be physically strong. This will not only make her a better firefighter, but it also will reduce her risk of injury and make her daily tasks easier. A female firefighter workout should include heavy exercises that hit all muscle as well as full body circuits and high-intensity training.

Weight lifting will help her to build muscle and strength while keeping her fit and strong. High-intensity workouts will boost her endurance and overall fitness. Kettle bell swings, interval sprints, push-ups, pull-ups, battle rope, swings burpees, rowing sprints, and deadlifts are all an excellent choice for her training routine. According to fire instructor Kevin Kupietz, physical testing increase our stamina, aerobic enhance, and overall strength. If anyone is out of shape, she may not pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and will not get her certification. Without this certificate, she cannot work as a firefighter.”

Erica Blockman is a career engineer/paramedic working with the Mount Shasta (CA) Fire Protection District, She has been with that department for four years. She is also a personal trainer, figure competitor and group fitness instructor and have seven years of experience. In an article, she said that Being a female, tall, short, or whatever the label society tagged you doesn’t matter because we girls are only part of the so-called “female statistic'

If we do not take the time in our life to maintain our most important tools, our body and mind, we may not be as big or tall as our brothers, but we have all the strength that we need and we are enough strong both mentally and spiritually. In everyday life we will face this incorporate physical challenge into.

But we also have to accept this challenge and also should surprise ourselves. In this way we’ll be on our way to becoming not only a stronger and happier individual but one less likely to let the judgmental words of someone else ruin our day. It’s not possible to change who we are but our height, or our gender. But we can always make changes and improvements in our body and attitude.” (blockman, 2011)

For this tough process sometimes girls become confused to step forward. There is also an important reason after talking with one of my friends is no one encourage them. The thing which they get our society has some stereotypical point of view that women have to be more feminine. They need to enhance their beauty by going to the parlor not going to the gym and starting bodybuilding. For this, they lost their faith in themselves.

Low profile job and low payments: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average payment for a firefighter was $49,080 per year in 2017. More than 327,300 jobs were available in 2016. The Candidates who are physically fit and complete their training have higher chances of getting this job. Firefighter salaries vary among states. A woman firefighter in California can easily earn $20,520 to $57,060 per year.

But now let’s talk about the current situation of the firefighter of our country. They are very low paid and low profiled. I live in khilgaon. There is a fire service beside my place. So, I went there to talk about their wages and favor from this profession. They shared that they are very low paid and government doesn’t give them any kind of extra opportunities to lead their life properly.

There is another story that is, I met with a person who lost his one arm in a hazardous incident while working. His name is Abdul Gani, age 42. He is the only earning member of his family. First he was one of the volunteer of this fire station. Then after losing his one arm he was demoted. The authority gave his family a small amount of money which is not enough to lead their life properly.

So, their condition is really measurable. And this station doesn’t even have any female firefighter. So, it’s natural that a girl will avoid this profession as her career. Because everyone wants to get a good job with so much opportunity and a handsome salary. But if it’s a low paid job then definitely no one will choose it as a profession including women also.

Pyrophobia and women: There is a term that is Pyrophobia, which means that to have deeply afraid of fire. There is an article which was published in 2016. In this article, the writer had broadly discussed the following term that is Pyrophobia is quite a common phobia and many people around the globe are known to be deeply afraid of fire. The word Pyrophobia originates from Greek ‘pur/pyr’ meaning fire and ‘Phobos’ meaning fear or deep dread. In a certain limit, the fear of fire is healthy, evolutionary and normal. However, in case of a phobic, the fear turns debilitating, often affecting his/her daily life wherein one is unable to withstand even small or controlled fires. To a Pyrophoric individual, the mere smell of smoke or something burning can trigger an intense anxiety attack. (olesen, 2016)

This phobia is said to be more commonly found in women, this makes it an extremely viable reason for women to not choose “firefighter” as a carrier option as to how can you save others from something you can’t save yourself from! Regardless there are plenty of ways to eradicate phobias. With proper training and supervision, a lot of women can overcome the fear of fire to take part in the life-saving act like firefighting.

However many women are restricted by their families to do so as they think it may be too much mental pressure on both (the family and the person acquiring the phobia). For this women just skip this as their profession.

Conclusion

 It’s tough to choose firefighting as a career for women, it’s not impossible. Because everything is in your mind. If a girl is mentally strong then she can persuade any sort of profession as her career. But the process is really difficult as I said before. Because only a few girls can choose as a fire fighting as her career which is rare in our country. So finally, all I can say that if you are mentally strong and stable then nothing is impossible.

Historical and Modern Systems of Punishment – Discipline

The opening section of Discipline and Punish gives a detailed account of two distinct styles of punishment. One is a public execution that takes place in a public square in 1757. The other is a timetable with rules for prisoners in the 1830s situated in an enclosed institution. Foucault aims to juxtapose these styles to mark the transition of the means of punishment throughout Europe— from the torture to the carceral age. The former is explicit, brutal, cruel, and immediately felt. The latter is contrastingly implicit, subtle, dragged out, and indirect. This change has been documented for both its positive and negative implications. Foucault uses these instances to establish a gateway into the rest of his discussion. He claims to write about the topic to write “a history of the past in terms of the present…[in other words], writing the history of the present” (31).

In the case of the public execution, it illustrates an obvious and explicit expression of power. It inflicts punishment on the body directly. Death was the ideal outcome and it was visible, yet instantaneous. “Contact between the law, or those who carry it out, and the body of the criminal, is reduced to a split second” (13). The paradox here is the personal and impersonal component of the punishment. It is intimate because it involves the unique individual. It is also generic because it is punishment for the sake of power. The individual endures physical pain while the public watches as they would at a theatre or performance. Crimes were punished based on a system of torture and violence—without any desire or effort to have a fair trial, the criminal is automatically guilty. The guilty individual was held accountable for the crime and the public spectacle set an example, teach a lesson, and discourage anyone from committing similar crimes in the future.

The second case shows a glimpse of the decline and gradual disappearance of torture as a spectacle (7). Punishment becomes about discipline, organization, distribution, and control. This change is often characterized as a shift towards a more humane and moral process. Foucault takes a critical approach with this notion. He questions the power relations in the new system. It is a different kind of power relation—still a problematic one. He suggests that the shift is more insidious than it appears. It might better to view the change as a public relations move that appears to benefit the public but there are other, less apparent things at work. Foucault says, to the public “it was as if the punishment was thought to equal, if not exceed, in savagery the crime itself, to accustom the spectators to a ferocity…to make the executioner resemble a criminal, judges murderers, to reverse roles…, to make the tortured an object of pity or admiration” (9). This means that the individual is a potential target of sympathy. The sovereign’s power is threatened by the loosening grip on public opinion as it turns against the punishment system. This is partly the reason torture and public execution, according to Foucault, disappeared. It was strategic to privatize punishment and remove it from the public eye. Power and discipline are exercised more subtly, efficiently, and behind bureaucratic walls (both physical and figurative). Doing so prevents any debate about the notions of punishment and justice and how they are achieved in society.

Shift from the Body to the Soul

Towards the beginning of the text, Foucault talks about how the birth of the modern prison system signified a transformed way of punishing the individual—focusing less on the body (10). He notes that punishment is “no longer [on] the body, it must be the soul,” and it is something that “acts in depth on the heart, the thoughts, the will, the inclinations” (16). The individual is punished at a deeper level than just the body. The aim is to have a more meaningful impact— to control and shape all aspects of an individual’s desires and behavior. This points to the insidiousness that Foucault alludes to throughout the chapters. Foucault says, whether it is imprisonment in recent history or timetables in the 1830s, the focus remains on the body, but differently. Additionally, this shift means that “judgment is passed on the passions, instincts, anomalies, infirmities, maladjustments, effects of environment or hereditary” (17). What this suggests is that criminals are no longer only judged by their acts. Instead, they are stereotyped and profiled as people who have certain kinds of minds and fit certain descriptions. They are pathologized for the sake of convenience and knowledge to intervene in future instances of deviant behavior.

Furthermore, with the new penal system “the hold is not only on offenses, but on individuals; not only on what they do, but also on what they are, will be, may be” (18). This speaks to how punishment functions in modern society. It gives rise to fields of interest that individualizes and generalizes. The offense and individual are both targets of punishment. The individual is also considered in a broad sense—where the identities, likelihood of certain behavior, and their place in society are predicted. Yet, the emphasis of inquiries goes beyond the crime and the criminal. Foucault asserts that judges have begun to judge not just crimes but also the ‘soul’ of the criminal. Therefore, new questions arise, including:

“‘How can we assign the causal process that produced it? Instinct, unconscious, environment, heredity?’ It is no longer simply: ‘What law punishes this offense?’ But: ‘What would be the most appropriate measures to take? How do we see the future development of the offender? What would be the best way of rehabilitating him?’” (19).

One of the most striking aspects of these questions is their scientific, psychoanalytic nature. Penal judgement, as Foucault mentions, evaluates using diagnostic, prognostic, and normative judgments. The individual, the crime, and the actual punishment exist as objects of experiment, examination, and even fetishization. This is related to Foucault’s rule to think about punishment as a part of scientific development.

Foucault’s argument that punishment shifts from the body to the soul requires some analysis. While he makes a strong case about the soul as the new primary focus, he also offers crucial points about the significance of the body. The body, Foucault notes, is involved in a “political economy,” is always at issue and this is evident in the actual confinement and correction of it. He then says that power relations “invest it, mark it, train it, torture it, force it to carry out tasks, to perform ceremonies, [and] to emit signs” (25). As described, the body as a target of punishment is still very present in the modern penal system. It is important to note that the shift toward the soul does not exempt the body from punishment and the soul cannot be reached without the body. The body has “economic use” and it is required as a means of productivity and subjugation. From this comes a “knowledge” and Foucault calls this mastery of knowledge “the political technology of the body” (26). This assertion complicates the relationship between power, the economy of punishment, and the individual. Foucault’s philosophy of power and knowledge seems rooted in an abstract, decentralized framework.

Power and Knowledge

Foucault proceeds to make a case for his conception and analysis of power and its relation to knowledge. He insists that power relations are everywhere, and everyone has power—'[power] cannot be localized in a particular type of institution or state apparatus…it is situated at a different level, operate a micro-physics of power” (26). In other words, power is nonhierarchical, decentralized, and fractioned across society. It exists in the abstract and through networks of society. As a relationship between people, power influences actions. Different from force or violence since it is abstract. Furthermore, “power is exercised rather than possessed,” and not owned solely by the dominant class (26-27). Foucault pushes against power as dichotomous (good vs bad, repressive vs empowering); he views it outside of class struggle and argues it is not simply an issue for “those who do not have it” (27). This suggests that power is not held by a few individuals over the many. Instead, power is viewed as dynamic, constantly changing, and something everyone is subjected to at any given moment. An example of this in modern systems of punishment and control is how citizens are taught certain behavior is unacceptable while the judge is trained to oversee the consequences of the deviant behavior. For the citizen, they are powerful in choosing not to commit a crime yet powerless in how that crime is defined. For the judge, they are powerful in judging the crime yet powerless because they must follow certain guidelines and regulations. Finally, Foucault says power relations “are not univocal; they de?ne innumerable points of confrontation, focuses of instability, each of which has its own risks of con?ict, of struggles, and of an at least temporary inversion of the power relations” (27). This means that they are not one directional and static. Instead, power varies across levels, contexts, and time. This aspect also seems to imply that power relations can be isolated and insular. Foucault suggests that power should be considered on a case-by-case basis since each instance contains its own set of characteristics, processes, and implications.

For Foucault, “knowledge produces power” as it is a catalyst and mechanism of power. While power and knowledge exist and function independent of one another, they are also closely linked together. They are practically inseparable in the sense that we dominate and control to create, classify, and know and vice versa. Foucault explains, “power and knowledge directly imply one another; there’s no power relation without the correlative constitution of a field of knowledge, nor any knowledge that does not presuppose or constitute at the same time power relation” (27).

An interesting thing about Foucault’s argument about power and knowledge is the idea that they “invest human bodies and subjugate them by turning them into objects of knowledge” (p. 28). This goes back to the idea of a docile body. Here, the body is coerced, dominated, and subjugated for the purpose of knowledge. It is important to place emphasis on how the body is objectified—the soul, the essence of life becomes irrelevant since the ultimate goal is to understand and control the masses by using power and knowledge.

Yet, Foucault argues, “we must cease to describe the e?ects of power in negative terms: it ‘excludes,’ it ‘represses,’ it ‘censors,’ it ‘abstracts,’ it ‘masks,’ it ‘conceals.’ In fact, power produces; it produces reality; it produces domains of objects and rituals of truth. The individual and the knowledge that may be gained of him belong to this production” (194). This is somewhat problematic because power and knowledge is used to oppress, disenfranchise, and marginalize certain sectors of society. While Foucault’s work has had significant benefits for the area of history, philosophy, and prison studies (institutional studies, in general), at times, his ideas are counterproductive. Power and knowledge, when not handled carefully, can have detrimental consequences. To say that everyone has power is understandable because it suggests relativity and the idea that we all have the capacity and free will to use whatever quantity of power we hold in society. This is true under the assumption that everyone can reach their potential and realize their power. However, the reality is that not everyone does. In the case of penal systems, the prisoner and the criminal are essentially powerless because they are made docile, objects of production, and disciplined so that they are compliant to the norms of their predicament.

Discipline and Organization

Foucault then moves into the topic of disciplinary power. He returns to the idea of the body that is “manipulated, shaped, trained, which obeys, responds, becomes skillful and increases its forces.” He adds a striking point that “a body is docile that may be subjected, used, transformed, and improved” (136). Again, the focus on the body is as important as the soul but there seems to be something simultaneous that occurs. Discipline works on multiple dimensions. The individual is not only controlled in a negative way. Foucault proposes it is also affected in positive ways, too.

To illustrate how the docile, yet useful body is achieved in the new carceral system, Foucault outlines the methods through which discipline is exercised. The first one, the scale of the control: the body is imposed on individually rather than collectively. The second, the object of control: affecting the body through forces and not through signs. The third, the modality: coercion is constant, uninterrupted and is exercised through codes that partition time, space, and movement (137). These methods exist to guarantee docility and utility. They function as domination mechanisms. To be successful, discipline must work in quality not just quantity, be clearly imposed with as little ambiguity as possible, and be organized so coercion is most effective. Foucault emphasizes again, discipline aims to produce docile bodies (i.e., strict subjection). At the same time, it extracts power from the body and converts it into usefulness (i.e., increased aptitude, capacity) (138). Disciplinary power focuses on the specifics, what Foucault calls a “micro-physics of power” (139). The goal is to break up and break down the individuals based on the smallest possible factors. By doing so, the task of controlling, distributing, and surveilling becomes a lot more manageable.

To end this section of his discussion, Foucault touches on the four aspects of discipline; the art of distributions, the control of activity, the organization of genesis, and the composition of forces. The first two are of particular interest. The first aspect involves how space is organized. Space is used as a mechanism to enclose, partition, and exploit usefulness (141). This is important for discipline to function because it establishes an effective way of “dividing and conquering” and distributing people. In this system, “each individual has his own place; and each place its individual” (143). In order for it to work efficiently, the body must be isolated and separated. With enclosure, “its aim was to establish presences and absences, to know where and how to locate individuals, to set up useful communications, to interrupt others, to be able at each moment to supervise the conduct of each individual, to assess it, to judge it, to calculate its qualities or merits. It was a procedure aimed at knowing, mastering, and using” (143).

The second aspect involves the use of time. The time-table is a prime example of this way of organizing. Foucault notes, the time-table aims to “establish rhythm, impose particular occupations, and regulate the cycles of repetition” (149). Within this mechanism, there is “the correlation of the body and the gesture” where “disciplinary control does not consist simply […] of particular gestures; it imposes the best relation between a gesture and the […] body… In the correct use of the body, which makes possible a correct use of time, nothing must remain idle or useless” (152). This speaks to the notion of productivity and self-determination when it comes to achieving the American dream and succeeding in life. To be a contributing citizen of society is fantasized as getting an education, joining the work force, and being a good consumer. Finally, there is the principle of “exhaustive use,” and “the principle of non-idleness; forbidden to waste time. Discipline arranges a positive economy; it poses the principle of a theoretically ever-growing use of time” (154). This is reminiscent of how we use time-centric phrases to motivate people to get proactive. For example, the Latin phrase “ Carpe diem” which translates to “Seize the Day” which is used to encourage someone to take advantage of the present time, without hesitation. Another example is “the early bird catches the worm” which encourages timeliness and punctuality.

Pride & Ownership: a Firefighter’s Love of the Job

When you think about a firefighter, the first thing that comes to mind is that classic movie like cene of a team putting out a fire in a building and saving everyone. But actually, a firefighter’s job is much more than that. In order to be a firefighter you must be in shape, prepared, trained, and ready to deal with difficult and stressful situation and much more. I intend to become a firefighter, so I can save lives and help people when they need the most.

Imagine waking up everyday without knowing what each day is going to bring, having to face your worst fears and make decisions with someone's life depending on it. That is a daily routine of a firefighter. Saving lives of strangers everyday, without asking anything in return. This job is crucial to society in general, everyday firefighter saves countless lives and properties. Without them society would fall into chaos and companies would lose extensive amounts of money.

Becoming a firefighter is much more than the pride and the actual job It's all about brotherhood. In a fire rescue squad, your fellow firefighters become your brothers. Watching your back in every situation the team faces, they stand by your side Until the end. Knowing this line of work, where you are in dangerous situations constantly, have brothers that you can always count on is something necessary and essential.

Great power comes with great responsibilities. Since firefighters are extensively trained and are a fundamental part of society, they can be solicited in many occasions. Besides fires, which in popular belief is the main job of a firefighter, they also rescue people and animals from car wrecks, collapsed buildings, stuck elevators and many other emergencies.

To become a firefighter, you must pass very rigorous tests and qualify in certain categories. First, all firefighters must have completed high school and obtained a diploma. After that you need to be in good physical condition, being able to drag a hose, carry equipment, search and rescue and breach through doors. Also, all of those who are thing about this career must have a clean record and a clean social media. After all of those are complete, one must pass a written test and go to the fire academy. There they will teach you the basics of the job, the science behind it and much more. After all is complete, you are ready to start saving people.

Since firefighting is career, and a very common one, you can get promoted really easily. Since 2014 the numbers of jobs in Firefighting has increased considerably, making fire stations having to contrat more and more people for the job. That means since they need people

Social Conformity and Priming: how Facebook Consensus Influences Individual Opinions

It is usually recognized how people are influenced by the opinions of others. In social media, where users are given the chance to freely express their thoughts behind screens, consumers might incline to conform to unanimity. This can be prejudicial for society because when consensus overrides individual reasoning, possible errors on consensus are not given the chance to be corrected (Kundu & Cummins, 2013). Conformity on unanimous information not only applies to statements, but also to attributions about other people. Exposure to arguments about ethical or moral issues can potentially prime people to make attributions about other users’ integrity (Domke, Shah & Wackman, 1998). The main purpose of the present paper is to analyze how Facebook Consensus and Priming can alter users’ individual opinions about a certain topic or person.

When conducting their research on social influence the work of Perfumi, Bagnoli, Caudek and Guazzini (2019) does a great job analyzing the two types of social influence: informational and normative influence. Informational influence is the tendency to accept information form others because we think is accurate (Deutsch & Gerard, 1955). Social media consumers rely on unknown users when looking for knowledge on a particular topic or task, even if they don’t have any clues on the unknown user’s credibility; this behavior tends to happen where there is a lack of knowledge on the consumer’s part (Perfumi et al., 2019). Normative influence, on the other hand, is the tendency to accept information from others because of social norm, whether it is to fit in or to feel accepted (Deutsch & Gerard, 1955). Perfumi and her colleagues found that deindividuation, namely people’s tendency to lose self-awareness in groups, reduces the chances to conform to normative influences. They also found that deindividuation is present in states of anonymity. Because the individuals in our study participated anonymously, we discard the effect of normative influence as a predictor of conformity; rather, we focus on unanimity.

Interestingly, the types of judgments regarding moral matters are also a factor affecting conformity. Kelly, Ngo, Chituc, Huettel & Sinnott-Armstrong (2017) found that people are more likely to conform when statements are rational, rather than emotional. In their study, participants were asked to rate how morally unethical was a situation (acceptable or condemnable) depending on the type of judgements read about the situation (emotional or rational). Results showed that people did not conform to emotional justifications, but rather conformed the most to rational statements (Kelly et al., 2017). This important observation is taken into account in our study, in which to prevent this factor from being an extraneous variable affecting our results. In order to achieve this, comments in each of the condition of our independent variable are varied among emotional and rational statements.

Some studies on conformity also look at the physical brain and its responses to positive versus negative reviews in online environments. Guo, Zhao, Zhang, Wen, and Yin (2019) demonstrated in their study that the brain encodes majority opinions and automatically identifies if personal reasoning is consistent or inconsistent with majority views. In Guo and colleagues’ study, thirty-two participants were asked to rate how helpful was a product review and were then given feedback on what other people thought of the presented review, while their brain potentials were being analyzed by the researchers. They found that participants rated positive reviews to be more helpful than negative reviews. More importantly, individuals were faster categorizing a review as helpful when this review was positive rather than negative (Guo et al., 2019). Guo and colleagues’ finding suggested that more cognitive processing is required when reading negative reviews, since they are incongruent with majority opinions.

One particular study did an excellent job at looking to the effects of in person consensus on conformity. Kundu and Cummins (2013) recruited thirty-three participants from the University of Illinois and randomly assigned them to a control and experimental condition. Individuals in both conditions provided their opinions on whether a hypothetical situation was morally correct or incorrect. The difference between the two conditions was that in the control condition participants would give their opinions alone, and in the experimental condition participants would give their opinions along with a group of three confederates. Real participants were always prompted to respond last. Kundu and Cummins (2013) noticed that real participants categorized morally acceptable situations as immoral and morally unacceptable situation as moral. The results concluded that decision making about ethical matters is strongly influenced by the social consensus (Kundu & Cummins, 2013).

In order to gain insight into how social conformity relates to Facebook consensus, we designed a study that shows how other people’s comments on social media can affect a person’s individual opinions. Participants in this study were random strangers, some of them college students, who were asked to give their impressions about a fake Facebook profile. Participants read a post where the Facebook owner, Abigail Foster, shared about a past “immoral” behavior. Consequently, they read either Supportive Comments, Opposing Comments, or Mixed Comments of other Facebook users about the post. Participants would then rate Abigail’s behavior and also indicate their thoughts on Abigail’s personality.

We hypothesized that participants in the opposing comments condition will be more likely to rate Abigail’s behavior as “wrong”, “immoral”, “unethical” and unacceptable” than participants in the supportive comments and mixed comments condition. As our second hypothesis, we predict that participant’s in the opposing comments condition will be more likely to disagree with positive statements about Abigail’s personality than participants in the supportive and mixed comments condition. Examples of positive statements about Abigail’s personality include: “Abigail seems moral”, “Abigail seems competent” and “Abigail seems good-natured”.

When is Conformity a Positive? when is it a Negative?

Aldous huxley employs diction and imagery to demonstrate the dangers of overlooking the happiness of an individual. When lenina pressures bernard to eat a soma sundae he says id rather be myself myself and nasty. Not somebody else however jolly. Here diction is employed to show that bernard refuses to follow the norms of his society by eating the soma sundae because it causes him to lose his individuality to mood changing drugs. By using the terms myself and nasty to describe his personality and jolly to describe the character of an ideal citizen of a conformist nation bernard makes himself look bad in comparison. However he stresses that he would rather be myself and nasty than someone who is jolly even if it means losing his identity. Additionally he indicates that he has an extent of knowledge about the effects of soma on the individuals of his society meaning he knows that soma has a strong influence on the temperament of a person.

By rejecting the soma sundae bernard proves that he finds happiness by staying true to himself and his real personality even if it isnt what the ideal citizen of his nation must be like. This dialogue supports the fact individuals would prefer to preserve their personalities even if it makes them look bad in comparison. Another instance in the book when it is proven that conformity has flaws is when john sees the bokanovsky twins receiving their soma ration and thinks he knew it with a sinking sense of horror and disgust for the recurrent delirium of his days and nights the nightmare of swarming indistinguishable sameness. Here imagery is used to show that john has developed a dehumanized view of the bokanovsky twins due to their overwhelming conformity. imagery is used to depict johns reaction to the twins as horror and disgust. This shows that john is repulsed by the fact that the twins all have the same face and character. Imagery is used again to illustrate the twins as the nightmare of indistinguishable sameness not as regular people. This reveals that people who are not bokanovsky twins such as john view them as something other than human.

In the natural world large groups of twins do not exist so someone like john who has just recently left the natural world cannot relate to the bokanovsky twins thus causing him to form a dehumanized view of them. This proves that individuals find happiness by avoiding conforming to a set of rules set by society. being unique is a part of being human. A society that tries to remove uniqueness is a society that suppresses the humanity of its citizens. Additionally a society with conformity does not allow deep meaningful relationships to form. This is put in place by the hypnopaedic saying everyone belongs to everyone else it means that no relationship especially no sexual relationship is more important than any other and every person has the right to have sex with anyone else. This principle creates a collective body that is more important than the individual person. Along with causing a lack of significant relationships it also causes a person to lose their importance because everyone is respected and appreciated the same way.

Losing their individuality getting dehumanized and losing their importance are three ways people of a conformist society lose their happiness. Second body paragraph: along with listing three ways individuals lose their happiness to conformity aldous huxley also uses diction and imagery to illustrate conformity in a positive light. When mustapha mond is describing world state to a group of young boys he says what with all the diseases and the endless isolating pain what with the uncertainties and the poverty—they were forced to feel strongly how could they be stable 41 here huxley uses diction to describe life before world state as full of disease pain uncertainty and poverty. All of these words have a negative connotation which conveys the message that the world was in a horrible position before it was changed into an incredibly homogenous civilization.

The question how could they be stable depicts pre modernized society as chaotic and unruly. Overall the diction choices in this dialogue characterize pre world state culture in a negative light thus putting individuality in a negative light as well since pre modernized society was one in which the people had unique personalities. This proves that conformity increases the happiness of the individual. Additionally the citizens of world state are conditioned to act and think the same. One example of conditioning is the repetition of everyone works for everyone else. We cant do without any one. Even epsilons are useful. We couldnt do without epsilons 74 over and over again. Here imagery is used to show that citizens of world state are being forced to think that even the members of the lowest caste in world state are important and valuable.

In a society where conformity is a foreign concept there are many prejudices and bias against certain groups. In a conformist society these prejudices are erased by conditioning. This increases the happiness of the individual because it causes them to feel positive emotions towards their peers and themselves however high or low on the social ladder they may be. Individuals of a conformist society gain happiness by being able to live in a stable society where there are no prejudices against them.

An Overview of a Discourse Community of Firefighters

Every career, club, and organization has its own type of community that defines it. A discourse community is defined as, “the focus of texts and languages, genres and lexis that enable members throughout the world to maintain their goals, regulate their membership, and communicate efficiently with one another(Ann M.Johns. 500)”. In discourse communities there are 6 characteristics that can be used. These 6 characteristics are, common public goals(where each person in the community strives to achieve the same thing), methods of communicating among members( which is when each person in the community communicates in their own unique way) , participatory communication methods(types of communication that empowers a community discover solutions to their development), genres that define the group( this articulates the operation of the community) , lexis( that is specific terminology based on the type of community), and a standard of knowledge needed for membership(Swales, 471-473). These characteristics are also known as the core qualities of a discourse community. Many of these characteristics or qualities are found in each person's individual community.

Many careers have their own type of discourse community. Firefighters are one community that together accomplish quite a lot. As a community firefighters are set out to accomplish four main goals. First being personal safety, second would be saving victims lives, third is saving property, and protecting the environment. Based on the definition of a discourse community, a firefighters community has meet all requirements set out by Swales.

Firefighters all share a common goal for protecting the community. Communication is also a big part of the job. Without communication firefighters would not be able to perform their tasks correctly and there would also be conflict among firemen/women. Public safety and Public service go hand in hand with a firefighters genre. This genre is not only used for firefighters, but for law enforcement and other first responders as well. Firefighters also have an abundance of lexis that is used throughout the field. There are over 300 abbreviations that firefighters must know while on the job. Some of them would be, AA(Affirmative Action or Alcoholics Anonymous or Automatic Aid), ABC(Airway, Breathing, Circulation), AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam), AMS (Altered Mental Status), and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support). A big part of this community is being able to have standard knowledge for membership. Some of this knowledge includes, Mechanical aptitude, ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions, ability to operate an automobile or other vehicles as required, working knowledge of first aid methods and the ability to apply them, and knowledge of how to operate portable radio and/or other communication equipment found in fire/emergency apparatus and fire stations.

I am one person that at the start of my life has not enjoyed school. If I had to describe school as one thing it would be a prison. Not only did I feel it was a prison in the physical sense but mentally as well. Since my mental state was so different from my classmates, I was always the one struggling. Not only was it a struggle for me but for my parents as well.

Even though my hatred for school was strong I knew that in the end I had to do it. It was mostly due to my parents forcing me that I was able to complete most of the work my school gave which allowed me to continue on with the rest of my classmates. It wasn't until my years of highschool that I started to understand why my parents pushed me so hard to complete my school work. I realized that school is just one step in preparing you for your career. It wasn't until my junior year of highschool where I started thinking about what career path I would be interested in.

As junior and senior year came I began to think of jobs I would potentially be good at. I knew that using my body and strength to complete tasks was something I was good at. One thing I have always been interested aside from physically demanding work is helping those in need and being able to protect the environment. As as continuing researching I found a career as a Firefighter fits everything I wanted and enjoyed to do. Now that I have graduated highschool I am currently attending Pasadena City College with a major in Fire Science. After my two years at PCC I plan on transferring to CAL State LA where I will continue to increase my knowledge in the field of Fire Fighting.

Within the Firefighter community there are 6 main qualities each fireman needs to have. Commitment to diversity and integrity, openness to change, Confidence and Resilience, Working with others, Effective communication, and Situational awareness. These 6 qualities are what makes a top quality firefighter. When applying to become a fire firefighter senior members of the community not only look for the correct physical attributes, but they look for these qualities in all cadets. A fireman's qualities shows of his/her work ethic, and a good work ethic is needed to get the job done.

Commitment to diversity and integrity is one quality that go hand in hand. This means that you must understand and respect other people's opinions and treat people fairly and ethically. Essentially people in this community must maintain an open approach with others, taking account of, and accepting, individual differences such as age, ethnicity, gender, religious beliefs, social background, disability, sexual orientation and physical appearance This also means that firefighters must recognise the importance of an awareness of the community and understands its needs. People of this community must be aware of everything that is going on. Always being aware and alert means that tasks will get done quickly and more efficiently.

Openness to change is something every firefighter needs to have. This means that firefighters must be able to accept change both within the Fire and Rescue Service and in their own role and adapts effectively. They must be able to both in the Fire Rescue Service and the local community, support change and takes action where possible. A very important skill that firefighters must have is to be able to be proactive in learning new tasks or ways of working. Once they can incorporate different ways of working that will dramatically increase the proficiency of their work.

Confidence and Resilience is another quality that is very important to have in this community. This is to maintain a confident and resilient attitude in highly challenging situations, For this community confidence and resilience is an essential thing to have while out in the field. If a firefighter is not confident in his/her abilities, it can affect them metaly while trying to save lives or even protect the environment. They must have the ability to remain in control of their own emotions during emergency situations (for example, does not panic and considers risk). Another thing they must do is challenges or questions others constructively to achieve more effective outcomes.

Working with others is something that firefighters do on a daily basis. Not only do they have to work together with their own community, but with other rescue services as well. Working with others in this field creates positive working relationships and better rapport for people both internally and externally. They also must be Sensitive to the feelings and well-being of others and takes action to support them. This means that they must be able to calm down surrounding members of the public during an emergency.

Effective communication is one thing that is always needed in an emergency situation and in training. This community needs to be able to Communicates verbal messages clearly, concisely and at a level appropriate to the audience so that message is understood regardless of individual differences. They need to always be alert for new and upcoming information and alway listen carefully for accurate information. Almost all firefighters need to be able to present messages such as fire safety information, in a way that promotes understanding. Presenting these messages is also very important for training new cadets.

Situational awareness is a very important key factor that not only firefighters but other emergency services must have. Every emergency service must have active awareness at all times of their environment to promote safe and effective working. Firefighter must be able to provide accurate information to make sure progress has been made against other outcomes. People in this community need to be able to judge space and distance within three dimensions and time to complete tasks safely and effectively. Sice firefighter work with ladders they have to judge the surrounding space and judge the distance when using the ladder. Checking the surrounding environment to promote safe working is also something firefighters do on a daily basis.

Firefighters exist for the main purpose of fighting hazardous fires that can be a threat to people's lives and the environment. Not only are they trained in fighting fire but they also have their skills to rescue people and animals from dangerous situations. The Roman emperor Agustus takes the credit for creating the first group of fire-fighting watchmen in 24BC. WIthin this community there are two different types of fire fighters. Volunteer firefighter, who are mainly found in smaller communities and Career firefighter who fight fires in cities.

Firefighter have an abundance of duties that they need to perform. They must, Drive firetrucks and other emergency vehicles, Put out fires using water hoses, fire extinguishers, and water pumps, Find and rescue victims in burning buildings or in other emergency situations, Prepare written reports on emergency incidents, Treat sick or injured people, and Conduct drills and physical fitness training. Firefighter top priority is to serve people of the public as well as the environment to make sure it is safe. Without the proper training, firefighters will not be able to get the job done with accuracy. Working as a team is also another important factor for getting the job done.

Many tools and gadgets are used while on the job. One of the most important tools that a firefighter uses everyday is a Fire truck. A fire truck is a firefighters main source of transportation when called into action. Fire trucks are able to carry a whole squad of firefighters which would give more assistance while rescuing people. Firetrucks are also very important because not only is it a main source of transpiration, but they also hold many of the tools firefighters use everyday. Another important tool that is connected to the firetruck is the fire hose.

A fire hose aside from the firetruck is very important. It main use is to put out hazardous fires that could be a danger to people and the surrounding environment. Outdoors, a fire hose is usually attached to a fire engine or a fire hydrant. Indoors, a fire hose can be attached to a buildings standpipe or plumbing system. Without this tool mainly fires in L.A and around the world would spread with no efficient way to stop them.

Every major city has their own type of firefighters manual that is used while cadets are in the fire academy. In the city of Los Angeles within the fire academy they use the Candidate Advancement Program Fitness manual. This manual goes through all the fitness and health requirements for completing the Fire academy. While reading this manual cadets can learn about all things like foam roll and muscle recovery, movement prep-dynamic stretches, and strength and conditioning. Through this manual cadets also learn about the four different phases they have to go through during the week.

A very important document that senior firefighters use to evaluate statistics in the fire academy is the LAFD Recruit Training Academy Overview. For each page of the document different parameters are thoroughly explained in detail. The data parameters for one page talks about the number of brand new recruits to the academy, Recruits who successfully completed the Academy, and Probationary Firefighters who have successfully completed 365 days of probation and their field internship. It is then divided into 3 sections, End status of Academy classes, ongoing recruit status of academy classes on probation, and current recruit academy class status. Another important statistic that this document takes into account is race and ethnicity.

Ranking inside the fire department is very important. Different ranks of firefighters hold certain responsibilities and are also shown different respects. Ranks are listed as a Volunteer firefighter, Probationary firefighter, Firefighter/EMT, Firefighter/Paramedic, Driver Engineer, Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief,Fire Chief. This is an example of what a normal ranking system is within a fire station. Major cities however have a very different ranking system. Inside a major city like New York or Los Angeles the ranks would be, 1st Deputy Fire Commissioner, Assistant Deputy Chief, Paramedic, Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner, Deputy Chief Paramedic, Deputy District Chief, Deputy Fire Commissioner, District Chief, Fire Commissioner

In the fire service conflict is one thing that can always arise. It can either be internal or external, individuals or groups related, it can even become personal. One conflict that arises on occasions is the decision of governing administration to reduce the budget, the number of fire stations, and staffing or services. They say that with good leadership, resolving the conflict begins before the struggle happens.When a serious problem arises, the administration, the chiefs, union and officer corps representatives need to meet to discuss the issues from all perspectives. Collaboration and compromise that meets the majority of the needs of all parties can help avoid the conflict altogether.

As of right now I am currently enrolled in Pasadena City College. My major at PCC is fire sciences. In order to help me enter this community I have been lucky enough to talk to a firefighter that goes to my town gym. As we continued talking he said I am on the right track with my education and I need to finish taking my GE classes for this year. After taking my general education for this year I went into detail for next year. My second year at PCC I plan on focusing on my major and also get enrolled into an EMT class.

After my second year at PCC I plan to traser to a secondary school to further my knowledge in Fire Science. I thoroughly researched CAL State L.A and it seems that there fire science program is truly exceptional. While I am at CAL State L.A I will continue with my Track and Field training which will help during the physical part of training as a firefighter. While I am at the CAL State I will be enrolled in the fire academy. Once my fire academy training is complete I hope to finally be able to become a firefighter.

In order to become a successful firefighter the one thing I need over all cadets is education. With more education I have a better chance of becoming a firefighter to get a higher ranking. Higher ranks mean more money and advancement opportunities. Another thing I will need to do as a newcomer is build a good rapport with senior firefighters. Senior Firefighters are not going to remember every face that comes into the academy. So introducing myself and building a rapport will help keep my name in their heads. Once I have a good rapport I have a higher chance of being selected as a new recruit.

Through extensive research I have learned a lot about this community. I have learned about their high standing qualities as well as their ranking system and different tasks they accomplish while on duty. There are some things however that I still need to learn. For example, how long does training last in the fire academy, and how many years does it take to become a higher rank as a FireFighter. By researching for this essay I have concluded that my passion for wanting to pursue this job has dramatically increased. I hope that one day I can not only become a firefighter but a top ranking fire chief.

This paper examines how systemic discrimination against women results in lower female participation in firefighting jobs. Firefighting jobs are a microcosm of the overall issue of systemic sexism in the workplace. Females have lower workplace participation than men overall. While there has been some improvement in the past half-century, the rate of change is slow and it will maybe decades until we reach full equality. More troublesome, there are reports of harassment, sexual discrimination and other negative treatment of women in fire departments. This is causing an epidemic of mental ill-health among female fire fighters characterized by alcoholism, post-traumatic stress disorder and even suicide. This paper will explore the driving factors of this systemic sexism and make a number of recommendations in order to rectify this. This paper reinforces the position that our society is characterized by deep, pervasive, systemic sexism which disadvantages women and can only be fought with major policy, and societal, changes.

Objectives & Background

The objectives of this paper are to understand the nature of how systemic discrimination against women results in lower female participation in employment with firefighting jobs. This paper will explore this issue holistically to look at the sexism factors both within the firefighting industry and in broader society which drive lower female workplace participation. This paper has a secondary objective of identifying policy choices which can assist us in rectifying the workplace differences between men and women in the firefighting occupation.

Literature Review

This literature review considered ten academic articles, books, and other sources of high repute which explore the issue of gender discrimination in employment in general and the firefighting workplaces in particular. Key themes emerged around workplace harassment, women’s feelings of being treated differently, the massive underrepresentation of women in this work force and the ways in which the sexism women face in fire fighting forces is symptomatic of broader sexism is society.

First to establish whether women ought to be treated equally, a review of the United National Universal Declaration of Human Rights was conducted. In Article 2 of this declaration it notes that people ought to be treated early irrespective of gender (United Nations, 1948). Thus, equipped with a transnational legal document which evidences the fact that the genders ought to be treated equally we can dive into an examination of how the genders are actually treated in fire departments.

Denise Girad's analysis for the National Fire Academy entitled 'Gender Bias and Its Impact on Woman’s Advancement in the Fire Service' explores the systemic racism and sexism that is pervasive in fire departments across America (2003). Girad demonstrates how women make up less than 30% of fire departments and outlines the ways in which system sexism has made fire departments be mostly male and white. This toxic environment is hurting womrn. The prevalence of suicide among female fire fighters is explored in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease in the article entitled 'Women Firefighters and Workplace Harassment: Associated Suicidality and Mental Health' authored by Melanie Hom, Ian Stanley, Sally Spencer-Thomas, and Thomas Joiner (2017). In particular this paper demonstrates how (Hom, Stanley, Spencer-Thomas, and Joiner, 2017, page 910). 21.7% of women firefighter have been sexually harassed, 20.3% have been threatened in ways that (Hom, Stanley, Spencer-Thomas, and Joiner, 2017, page 910-912).

The International Association of Women in Fire and Emergency Services publishes a 'A National Report Card on Women in Firefighting'. The report card authored by report card on Denise Hulett, Marc Bendick, Sheila ; Thomas, and Francine Moccio indicates that the issue of female underrepresentation in fire departments is part of a broader trend where women are excluded from other emergency response occupations (April 2008). Shockingly this report card illustrates that an overwhelming majority of women (84.7%) report that they have received different treatment because of their gender (Hulett, Bendick, Thomas and Francine, 2008, page 3).

The issue of managing diversity in the workplace is a longstanding item which has been under exploration for many decades and was seen in two older articles. Mary Centile’s writes in her 1991 article explores the ways in which gender discrimination can subtly enter into a workplace to influence decision making. This serves to highlight the ways in which gender bias can often a subconscious issue. To further explore the history of discrimination past views on discrimination are also explored. For example, Felice Schwartz wrote “Management Women and the New Facts of Life” in the Harvard Business Review in 1989 in which she explored many of the same themes found. In particular, the issue of maternity leave is often held up as a driver of workplace discrimination; her article highlights the deep roots of behavioral and cultural biases about how women are different than men.

Our theoretical basis for understanding how culture drive sexism and racism is explored by contrasting McIntosh’s position to a counterpoint. Peggy McIntosh’s 1988 article “White Privilege and Male Privilege: A Personal account of coming to see correspondence through work in Women Studies” serves to outline a coherent argument for how systemic discrimination. McIntosh highlights the ways in which issues of gender and race exist as a systemic, pervasive privilege which results in white men having a disproportionate advantage in society. McIntosh notes that this “unearned advantage” and “arbitrarily awarded power” is used by white men to bolster their own societal power (McIntosh, 1988). McIntosh’s view on the subject of male privileged can be contrasted with Esther Vilar’s Der Dressierte Mann (1971); translated into English as “The Manipulated Man” in 1998 Vilar argues that females effect an appearance of weakness in order to manipulated men. While an interesting argument, if Vilar’s case were true then it would suggest that the other academic research on systemic sexism reviewed here is somehow part of a broader female tendency to use the appearance of weakness in order to gain resources from men. If this argument were valid, then modern feminist theory is simply an attempt to cherry-picked examples of inequality to use state power to channel resources from men to women’s advantage. This patently absurd! Hence it appears that McIntosh’s position on unearned privilege in an invisible backpack appears the more plausible explanation of the gender differences than Vilar’s concept of female manipulation.

Nicholas Eberstadt’s 2016 book entitled Men Without Work explores the overall gender composition of the workforce from the mid-20th century to the early-21st century. Eberstadt highlights the ratio of employment to population to explore long term trends in gender and work. Since 1948, female workplace participation has risen from under 40% to about 70%; in contrast male workforce participation has fallen from over 90% to about 80% (Eberstadt, 2016, page 34). Thus, overall society is becoming more equal as women gain increased workforce participation while men step back. However, Eberstadt’s work serves to highlight that women still lag men in the workplace and that more progress is needed.

Finally, to understand some of the behavioral factors driving gender conflicts the writing of Dr. Farrell were considered. Warren Farrell, PhD, was on the board of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and authored several books on male behaviour. His PhD thesis was written on changing male behaviour when women enter into compatriot roles (Farrell, 1986, page 412). Farrell’s 1986 book Why men are the way they are has been selected to assist us in identifying male behaviours which may contribute to female inequality. Cultural issues connected to female lower workplace participation are also explored, for example the limited examples of female career progression in popular magazines (Farrell, 1986, page 45). Farrell offers added insight into why men are hoarding work positions to the detriment of women’s workplace opportunities.

Discussion & Analysis

Based on my review of literature connected to female participation in firefighting jobs, it is made abundantly clear that low female participation in fire-fighting jobs is part of a broader issue ob lower female participation in all employment sectors. Insights may be gained into t If we extrapolate the long term trends since the mid-20th century, we can see that female workplace participation has risen from under 40% to about 70% (as compared to male participation of 80%) an increase of about 0.5% per year (Eberstadt, 2016, page 34). This will take another 20 years to catch up with male employment to population ratio of 80%. Simply waiting for female employment to rise and male employment to fall is unacceptable. Inequality is clearly indicative of systemic anti-female bias.

Women may not feel comfortable working in fire departments due to the behaviors of men. Women experience high levels of ostracism, social isolation, discrimination and other sexist behaviors which can include harassment (Girad, 2003, page 29) Male workplace behavior directly contributes to lower female workplace participation. For example, males tend to express anger in a very explosive and outward fashion which women may find threatening (Farrell, 1986, page 334-335). The solution to this would have to be to institute a system of punishment on makes who make women feel uncomfortable; if such a system of punishment had the effect of driving men out of the workforce this would have be desired effect of increasing female employment relative to male employment.

When women do not feel comfortable in the workplace they often engage in self destructive behavior. The toxic and harassment filled environment of fire departments has led to female fire fighters being more susceptible to alcoholism, insomnia, drug use, post-traumatic stress disorder, and even suicide (Hom, Stanley, Spencer-Thomas, and Joiner, 2017, page 910-912). Thus, male behaviors perceived as harassment by women can push women into a state of extreme mental distress to the point that some commit self-harm. Shockingly, the majority of women fire fighters (65%) report that there is no procedure in place they are aware of to address discrimination complaints (Hulett, Bendick, Thomas and Francine, 2008, page 3). Thus, we have an environment where male behavior drives women to self-harm without providing them assistance they need.

These behaviors are culturally determined not biologically determined. Cultural factors are more important than biology when it comes to differences between the genders; therefore difference of outcome is due to sexism in our culture and not any innate biological difference between men and women (Girad, 2003, page 10). Women of color (i.e. African American women) face higher levels of discrimination indicating that there is both sexism and racism at play within the firefighting culture (Hulett, Bendick, Thomas and Francine, 2008, page 2). Thus, in order to rectify differences in outcomes between the genders we may need to deconstruct and rebuild the parts of our culture which encourage traditionally “masculine” behaviors in order to encourage more gender neutral and feminized behaviors which make women feel comfortable in the workplace.

This analysis leads us to three key main conclusions. Firstly, that the manifested gender inequality in the workplace is prima facia evidence of underlying sexism in society. Secondly, sexism in society is only fully eliminated when the outcomes of men and women are made equal, especially in regards to workplace participation rates and wages. Thirdly, that government policies aimed at rectifying inequality have been inadequate to date and therefore must be extended and escalated to rectify gender inequality. Based on this analysis, a number of recommendations are presented below.

Recommendations

We must implement policies to make it easier for women to work, or perhaps policies to discourage male employment. There are a number of policies which one could implement in order to encourage more female employment. Enhanced workplace protection of women, affirmative action, job quotas, female-only scholarship, female mentoring programs and programs aimed at encouraging men to leave the workforce to make space for women could all be considered. Each of these policy options will be explored in turn.

Affirmative action programs demand that when companies are faced with two equally qualified candidates that they hire the female applicant. The challenge is that affirmative action policies have largely existed for many years and still there are inequalities in the workplace. Consider how laws have been in place since for decades against sexism. For example, in the USA Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender and yet women still only make up 30% of the fire departments in the USA (Girad, 2003, page 2) Thus, laws aimed at equality of opportunity are insufficient and we must make laws to force equality of outcome.

Female mentoring programs existing some workplaces but should be expanded. Women feel socially isolated in fire departments which is evidence of rampant sexism (Girad, 2003, page 2) Making female mentorship programs mandatory would eliminate issues of men refusing to mentor women (i.e. due to subconscious sexism or male fears of being accused of harassment). Companies that do not have focused mentorship programs on advancing female leadership could be subject to heavy fines to encourage their compliance with the program.

Job quotas could be implemented to force 50% of jobs be held for women. The simplest way to immediately rectify female underrepresentation in firefighting departments would be to pass a law that all new hires must be female until at least 50% of the workplace was made up of females. Once 50% of the workplace is made up of females, then the quota could be reduced from 100% to 50% to maintain gender balance. Naturally, all hires would still need to meet the prerequisites for the job but by putting a complete halt on hiring men until women make up 50% of the firefighting work force we could quickly rectify this issue.

Female-only scholarship currently exist and should be expanded. There is widespread discrimination in education which may disadvantage women (Girad, 2003, page 11). In order to counter this we need to give more resource to female education. One way to expand female job participation would be to pass a law which mandates that 100% of all scholarship funds must go to women until they make up 50% of the workforce and have equal workforce participation to that of men. Thus, we could slow the volume of new male workers by denying men scholarships across the board in favour of women. In particular, no scholarships should be given any male in firefighting training programs until male and female participation in firefighting jobs is equalized.

Enhanced workplace protection of women would remove the threat of male violence to women to make women feel more comfortable in the workplace. Studies have shown that over 40% of women are either sexually harassed or threatened on the job by male fire fighters (Hom, Stanley, Spencer, Thomas and Joiner, 2017, page 910-912). To address issues of male on-female violence and harassment, we should implement workplace policies which focus on believing the victim, rather than the concept of guilty-until-proven-innocent. Effectively, if a women accuses a man of harassing, berating, insulting or otherwise upsetting her then the man should be terminated immediately. Expanding this policy into the criminal law system (i.e. setting a presumption of guilt for any man accused of harassing or assaulting a woman) would be a step n the right direction. The elimination of evidentiary standards in favor of female testimony would allow a higher conviction and incarceration rate of men who are accused of assaulting or harassing women. If this has the effect of discouraging men from applying for jobs to avoid contact with potentially litigious females, then this would be a positive side effect since it would more room for female applicants.

Finally, there are only so many jobs in the economy so at some point men need to leave the workplace to make space for me. Thus, we need programs aimed at encouraging men to leave the workforce to make space for women could be considered. For example, men could be offered a government subsidized incentive payment to quit their jobs if a female wants to apply for the position. This buyout concept would encourage men to take early retirement, go be stay-at-home fathers or otherwise leave the workforce to make way for women firefighters. One challenge would be the need to reeducate men to get rid of old patriarchal attitudes men hold towards work as a means of providing for their families. Farrell notes that men tend to associate their hard work with expressing love to their family, thus married men tend to work more hours and try to produce more to provide for their family (Farrell, 1986, page 268). Men must be reeducated that work is not a valid expression of affection; rather they need to be educated that a truer expression of affection is to leave the workplace to make space for women.

Summary

In summary, this paper has demonstrated that there is a pervasive sexist against women in the workplace. The lower female participation in firefighting jobs is part of a wider issue of systemic sexism against women which discourages women from working. Gains made in the past with female employment rising from under 40% to over 70% (Eberstadt, 2016, page 34) are meaningless until female workplace participation is equal to that of men. Policy recommendations have been shown here to increase female workplace participation and decree male participation. These policies should include enhanced workplace protection of women, affirmative action, job quotas, female-only scholarship, female mentoring programs and programs aimed at generally encouraging men to step aside in favour of women. Men should step aside to allow women to lean into the workplace. Only when we achieve full equality with men and women having exactly the same occupational outcome can we consider the issue of rampant sexism to have been adequately addressed; anything short of full equality is clearly indicative of systemic anti-female bias in society.

Overwatch Community Ask Blizzard to Release Overwatch Firefighter Skins for Australian Wildfires

Overwatch community has recently made a plea on Reddit asking Blizzard to take action on Australian wildfires. Community called on Blizzard to make firefighters skins for some of the heroes. The post added that the purchases of these skins should also go towards helping to put out fires in Australia. According to the Reddit post created by WippitGuud, the post asked for two heroes to be made into firefighters in Overwatch. The heroes in question were Junkrat and Roadhog. The proposal quickly draw a lot of attention from Overwatch community with hundreds of replies made to the original post. Many people began supporting the cause in the comments. There were also a lot of speculations as to how the firefighter skins would look on the two heroes. 

Some comments pointed out that Roadhog could have a mask to protect itself from smoke, similar to the one firefighters use in the fire. Someone else added that they could also change Roadhog's hook into a water hose. For the Junkrat, people suggested that he could use water balloons as his ammo. Another person added, Blizzard can also give Junkrat a firefighter hat which firefighters use to protect their heads in fires. It wouldn't be the first time for Blizzard to make a charity campaign through the ingame skins. In the past, there have been several campaigns for different causes by the game company. There was the Pink Mercy campaign in 2019. During this time, Blizzard created a pink skin for Mercy valued at $15. After the campaign finished, the company directed all the earnings from this skin to Breast Cancer Research Foundation. According to Blizzard, the campagin had funded $12.7 million for the Breast Cancer Research. What are the Australian Wildfires? Australia have been battling with forest and bush fires for many years. 

Normally, these fires have a short lifespan. However, the last wildfire have been going on for over 4 months. According to the recent reports, prime minister of Australia Scott Morrison also told the press that the wildfires will continue for many months to come. There has been over 20 deaths already due to the wildfires. The fires burnt down thousands of houses in one of the most populated states of Australia, New South Wales. It ravaged close to 15 million acres of land throughout Australia, half of which is within the New South Wales. The worst part is the fire is only continuing to grow. According to New South Wales Rural Fire service, there were 139 different fires reported just earlier today. Unfortunately, the fire is also spreading faster than it can be contained. The fire service has reported that they brought only about half of those fires under control. Aside from the land damage and deaths, there have been also reports that almost half a billion of animals in the area have died from the fires. 

According to the Australian biodiversity expert and professor Chris Dickman, the animals likely died either from the fire or from the lack of food and shelter caused by fires. There has been several nonprofit organisations such as Australian Red Cross and World Wildlife Fun Australia already campaigning to help towards the wildfires in Australia. Hopefully, Blizzard also listens to its community to launch yet another campaign to help battle the Australian wildfires.

The Life of a Heroic Firefighter

I was awoken by the piercing noise of my alarm. I thought it would be an ordinary day on call at the fire station. However, it wasn’t an ordinary day. I ended up fighting the largest fire in my profession and there were catastrophic fire alerts for most of New South Wales. However, let me start from how I got to where I am today…It all started when I turned ten years old. My mum asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I quickly replied with “ I wanna be a firefighter just like dad was before he passed away.”

I am now 14 and although I have found other interests, I still have the same dream. Whenever I tell people I want to be a firefighter just like my dad was they start laughing at me because they don’t believe I will make it. But I am determined to make my dream come true and prove all these people wrong. This year I have decided to enrol as a cadet firefighter so that I can gain some experience before I’m older so that it is easier for me to join the bushfire firefighting crew. It has now been 4 years and I am transferring to the bushfire firefighting crew. Tomorrow is my first day and I am a little nervous but also excited to start a new adventure.

I wake up to the sound of my alarm. I quickly sit up and turn it off. I got up and ready to go to the fire station. On my way to the fire station I was listening to the radio. They said that someone had lit a tree on fire and it is spreading quickly. I knew that there was a high chance I would be attending this fire once I had reached the fire station. Once I arrived at the station the alarm went off and we got a call saying we needed to get to the fire as quick as possible. My crew and I rushed to get our stuff on and then jumped in the truck and drove off. On the way we were having a team briefing so that everyone knew exactly what we were doing. When we arrived…

The fire was already covering at least 200 hectares of bushland. We quickly jumped out of the truck and got straight into setting up and fighting the fire. Due to the bad weather conditions it was a long and tough battle that lasted 17 hours of hard continuous work. Once the fire was out we went back to the station and went home.

A week later we had another small incident that only took us 3 hours to put out due to good weather conditions.

Now that brings me back to where I started. I woke up to the sound of my piercing alarm I switched it off and got up and ready for another day of work. I knew the fires would be bad because we were in a very bad drought, it was windy and it was a 42 degree day. We had already alerted everyone that there would catastrophic fire conditions a week ago so that people could evacuate or get their belongings ready incase they needed to evacuate. When we arrived at the scene of the fire it was a lot larger than we had originally anticipated. We quickly set up and began to fight the fire.

While we were attempting to put out the fire with the help of the aerial firefighters, I realised it was getting closer to the houses. I let our team know and we moved one team over near the houses to help prevent them from catching on fire. They aerial team covered the nearby houses in pink fire retardant. We were constantly fighting for 14 hours with little improvements on the size of the fire on one side but it was still spreading rapidly due to the strong winds. We finally got a rest and received a bottle of water. Whilst on my break…

I saw two koalas attempting to escape from the blaze. I put my drink down and rushed over to them and picked them up. I then sat down and grabbed my water bottle to slowly pour water into their mouth so that they weren’t dehydrated. I then called a wildlife rescue centre to come and collect them so they could have a health check up and return to the bushland.

Glass Half Empty

A good majority of the time you can find me walking through the halls with a face like this … It’s not that I’m upset or judging the people around me … it’s my thinking face! What assignments do I have due tomorrow? Did I finish all of my homework? Do I have enough time in my day… to not workout? I have a lot of stuff to think about, so you can imagine how annoying it is when my train of thought is interrupted. “Cheer up, grumpy!” First off, I wasn’t grumpy, but I’m getting there. Second, even if I was grumpy, I am not a suggestion box and fake smiling won’t get my English homework done. But that’s what we’re told, right? That keeping a positive attitude all of the time allows for us to make more friends, leads to raises and promotions in our careers, and improves our overall health, reducing the risk of stroke. While there may be research to support all of these claims, the reality of it is, looking at the glass half full rather than half empty does nothing to fill up your glass.

Now I’m not saying that optimism is bad, but society has placed such a stigma on negativity and pessimism. We’re guilted into feeling bad … for feeling bad. To keep ourselves from being labeled “Debbie Downers” or pessimists, we often choose to silence our opinions. We’re too negative about negativity, but luckily, there’s a light at the end of this tunnel. First, we’ll look past the grumpy exterior to see pessimism for what it truly is; second, we’ll define our frown lines as we discover how detrimental even the nicest of fake smiles can be.

Negativity has gotten such a bad wrap that people out rightly deny the fact that they even have negative thoughts. B. Cade Massey, an assistant professor at the Yale School of Management says, “It’s gotten to the point where people really feel pressure to think and talk in an optimistic way.” Pessimism is severely misunderstood. To be a pessimist is, thanks to Websters, to be a person with “an inclination to emphasize adverse aspects, conditions, and possibilities or to expect the worst possible outcome.” Like instead of pretending everything is okay, a pessimist would let their group of friends know that that relaxing lake that they want to go to this weekend … yeah … Leeches. Of course, it sucks being a Debbie Downer that has to ruin plans, but you know what also sucks? Leeches. That’s the beauty of pessimism. It allows us to look at situations in a way that sheds light on possible mishaps, allowing for the proper course of action to be taken to either prevent or deal with a negative situation.

So, why is it that we frown on those who see the glass half-empty? Well, we can place some blame for this stigma on Martin Seligman’s theory of learned optimism. Since the 1970s this University of Pennsylvania professor was considered to be the father of positive psychology. For decades, Seligman advocated for the use of optimism to combat unpleasant circumstances, emotions, or occurrences, ultimately shaping the way we view optimism and pessimism today. But recently Seligman’s theories have come under fire, and Seligman wrote in his latest book, Flourish, saying, “I actually detest the word happiness … The idea that optimism is always good is a caricature. It misses realism, it misses appropriateness, it misses the importance of negative emotion.” It seems as though the father of positive psychology has become a bit less positive these days … perhaps a signal for us to rethink the extent to which we value optimism.

Overly optimistic environments can be extremely counterproductive and have their fair share of negative repercussions. And while a positive environment is vital to the success of any group, what happens when things get too nice? Cups of coffee get made and smiles are exchanged, but underneath that facade of niceness is probably some hidden tension, feedback and criticism that remain unacknowledged or unheard by people who could probably benefit from your words of – albeit negative – wisdom. Science correspondent for NPR, Shankar Vedantam, explains that “Social scientists call this sort of behavior information aversion, or the ostrich effect (based on the old myth that ostriches bury their heads in the sand when they’re scared).” And just as you’d expect, this turns out to be the worst way to escape predators.

It’s a strategy that isn’t only ineffective at escaping physical predators, but predators of the mind as well. On March 11, 2012, Sergeant Robert Bales of the U.S. Army slipped away one evening, and went to a small village in the Taliban stronghold of the Kandahar Province. It was there, between the mud-walled homes that Bales gunned down and murdered 16 Afghan civilians. Bales’ story is not just one of the horrors of war, but one that sheds light on the horrors of false positivity and the pressure we put on people to pretend everything's okay. You see, learned optimism theories, like Dr. Seligman’s, heavily influence the psychological culture of those in the armed services, like Sergeant Bales. Soldiers feel pressure to be strong, so they put up a tough and positive front, fabricating personas that push soldiers to “fake good” until they fall apart. Doctors blamed this mentality for Bales’ actions explaining that “soldiers … deny stress and trauma, and false bravado is actually encouraged, under the banner of ‘resilience’”.

Clearly, not even the worst psychological illness is an excuse for Bales’ horrific actions, but the blame for this tragedy does not fall on Bales alone. His story is just one example of how detrimental our tendency to promote these strong and positive facades can be. Why is it that on average, a woman will leave an abusive relationship 7 times before she leaves for good? Why is it that 50% of soldiers suffering from PTSD don’t report it? Why is it that suicide is the second leading cause of death for Americans ages 15 to 24? Because, “Cheer up grumpy, people change.” Because “Cheer up grumpy, be army strong.” Because “Cheer up grumpy, you’ll get over it.” When we avoid issues or topics because they’re unsettling or we’re hoping for a better tomorrow we do nothing to make those realities any less real.

So, I’m sorry my face isn’t more approachable. But, I’m thinking. I’m thinking that fake smiling and pretending to be happy does a bigger disservice to both of us. I mean, I’m also thinking that yes, people who excessively complain are just annoying, I don’t need to know for the fifth time how much you hate Chemistry. But as annoying as pessimists may sometimes be, fellow pessimist, Voltaire once argued that “Optimism is the madness of insisting that all is well when we are miserable” So “cheer up grumpy,” we all find ourselves in situations that are less than ideal, but sometimes it’s okay for the glass to be half empty – just as long as you try to fill it up.

Enterprises create a global management talent pool that will send employees from one country to another. Expatriates are selected for overseas assignments should be based on their skills and overseas experience. Female expatriates cherish their assignments more because the overseas experience is motivated to acquire more knowledge.

In the process of selecting expatriates, employees are equally. Female employees would be less considered for a job opportunity overseas, self-recommendation is encouraged. Leaders can motivate female employees to speak for themselves, and the enterprise provides work assistance. For female expatriates with children, the enterprise has the responsibility to take good care of children, it is to ensure that female expatriate's less distress so they are able to do their assignments. The mentor is available to be provided help for female expatriates if they face difficulties. During the repatriation process, the enterprise ensures female expatriates feel accepted by other employees, and their job remain in the enterprise.

Female expatriates put into the work when they are valued by enterprises. Leaders collect feedback from expatriates that change the corporate culture. Thus, leaders increase the demand talent pool of female expatriates. Through the overseas experience, it can not only improve the status of women in the workforce but also reduce the effects of glass ceilings and boundaries.

“Once Upon a Time” and “A Chip of Glass Ruby”

The Struggle of Apartheid

No matter what, there are always two sides to a story. In the short stories “Once Upon a Time” and “A Chip of Glass Ruby” by author Nadine Gordimer it tells how the two different families are impacted by the South African apartheid. One is a wealthy upper class family living in a suburb with dangerous people surrounding their home. The other is a poor family living in a tight space trying their best to fight the apartheid. Both families have their share of struggles and hardships and the author shows them through literary devices. Overall, the two short stories share similarities and differences between setting, tone, and imagery.

In the two short stories by Nadine Gordimer, the stories both share a common and disparate setting. For example, in “Once Upon a Time” it states, However, in “A Chip of a Glass Ruby” it states, The settings of the two homes are contrasting, one home is very spacious and fit for a small family and the other is cramped and has no room. In the story “Once Upon a Time” it shows how the house was built with security and protection which gives it more a perception of a prison. In the same way, the house in “A Chip of a Glass Ruby” is also similar to a prison because of the limited space and unsubstantial privacy. Even more, the two short stories are set in South Africa when the apartheid was still unresolved. Although, in “Once Upon a Time” it is never directly stated by the author what time period and location the story takes place in, but the reader can infer the story is set in South Africa. To point out This implies segregation was happening within the story, and at the beginning of the short story the author provides context clues about living in Africa. On the other hand, in “A Chip of a Glass Ruby” the main character, Zanip Bamjee, was an Indian woman who wasn’t affected by apartheid but felt the need to fight for others rights. As an example, the story states, Overall, the two short stories take place in a diverse setting, but are connected to the same events in South Africa.

In the texts “A Chip of Glass Ruby” and “Once upon a Time” the author conveys a tone of gloominess. The stories never speak about happy settings, it only gets darker with time. Traumatic events can be found in both stories, in “A Chip of Glass Ruby”, it says and in “Once Upon a Time” When reading the stories, the audience can detect this tone as if the victims were telling the story themselves. Both of the stories are set in areas where the characters feel unsafe and unable to find happiness, this is due to the gloomy tone of the author. In “Once Upon a Time”, the family is living in a neighborhood filled with “dangerous” minorities constantly upgrading their security systems. The story states, In “A Chip of Glass Ruby”, it states, the family is set in a poor area set on the verge of revolution. The wife is caught conspiring against the government and is arrested. Overall, Nadine Gordimer uses a tone of gloominess in both short stories.

Nadine Gordimer uses imagery in her two short stories to help convey the meaning of the text in a sensory way. She uses similar concepts of imagery in both short stories, however, she also uses different methods that pertain to the specific story's plot. In the short story, “Once Upon a Time” it states,This is similar to the imagery used in “A Chip of Glass Ruby” because it helps readers visual a tragic event in the story. In the short story, “A Chip of Glass Ruby”, it states, “This shows the imagery in both short stories are similar because it helps the reader visual negligent events in the story and have a dreadful image in mind. Although both short stories have similar imagery, they also have disparate visuals due to the stories overall meaning. One way the imagery is different between the short stories is in “Once Upon a Time” Nadine Gordimer mainly focuses on tragic events because there were not many happy moments in the story. This leads readers to have an underlying image of grungy events in their head. On the contrary, In “A Chip of Glass Ruby” Nadine Gordimer focuses on both happy and sad times within the story. Nadine Gordimer has imagery drawn to light hearted situations, like when the author describes how dedicated she is to her husband and nine children and how the father gets up and goes to work everyday to provide for the family. This leads readers to have peaceful images unlike the imagery in “Once Upon a Time.” Overall, Nadine Gordimer used imagery in the short stories, “A Chip of Glass Ruby” and “Once Upon a Time” to help readers visual the story.

Overall, Nadine Gordimer’s two short stories, “A Chip of glass Ruby” and “Once Upon a Time” share similarities and differences between setting, tone, and imagery. As the author shows the families, similarities in their different lives, such as how they deal with their individual traumatic experiences, how their surroundings affect them, and how they feel about what has happened. The author cleverly created a link on how these stories told their own side of how apartheid impacted them.

Restorative Practice

Too many students are being suspended only to return to school and get suspended again once they return. In fact, out-of-school suspensions are likely to increase discipline problems because of the frustrating effect of the returning student finding him or herself even further behind than when he or she was evicted from school (Christie, Nelson, & Jolivette, 2004).

Furthermore, school suspension and expulsion result in a number of negative outcomes for both schools and students. Students see out of school suspension as a vacation. If they realize that nothing will be done at home, they will continue to try to get suspended. Despite the packets of homework sent home, it usually does not get done, because many parents will not enforce the student responsibility to complete it (Skiba). Even though many research studies show that the country has a stable and even declining rate of school violence and that out-of-school suspensions do not work, most schools continue to use this practice (Schiraldi and Ziedenberg, 2001).

Creating a supportive school climate requires close attention to the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of all students. Another approach to discipline is needed. Restorative practices are an emerging social science that studies how to strengthen relationships between individuals as well as social connections within communities. Restorative approaches to school discipline are increasingly being implemented throughout the United States in an attempt to reduce reliance on suspension and eradicate the racial discipline gap. Yet, little is known about the experience of students in classrooms utilizing restorative practices.

Legal Studies – Discipline the Students

In the media they covered how many schools between New York, California, and other U.S. had many problems with discipline in the public-school system and how it disrupts student's education. In one article you find how some students thought it was bad but wished they would clarify the offense before punishing the students with a suspension or even expulsion. They usually punished more of the minority in schools than any other person, students said it impacted their education because then those other students who were well behaved had to witness the teachers taking time from classroom lessons to discipline the students.

In New York parents were worried about their teenagers when they got expelled from the high school. Parents rallied together to let the school system know that they need to do more to keep their students in school and not give up on them from the first signs of problems. They even said as parents they do so much to encourage their child to get an education so why aren’t they helping and giving students from k-6 suspensions and expulsions. The school system wanted to get rid of the punishment system and put in place a counselor who can help them find a solution if the kids are having behavioral problems in class.

The public-school system was most likely punishing black and minorities more than white students. In one of the articles they looked at incidents that demonstrate that black students were getting arrested in school for minor offenses and more violently based off racial profiling of police officers one incident involved black men who are most likely to get in trouble with the law not just in the school system. In the school system they want to change the dynamic on not punishing students but getting more social work, counseling, and more people in the psychology field. Instead, New York hires over NYPD to do their jobs they were not monitored

One point the article made that was proven in the articles in which they have harsh punishments from school is that teachers were getting hurt physically by fellow students and that again they didn’t have enough counselors but cops to arrest mostly young black men. I feel that they need other alternatives before they punish the students to not completely ruin their future altogether. In the sense the school systems themselves want to cover up the number of suspensions and expulsions so they don’t have high numbers this gives very little hope for teacher trying to find the authority to discipline students properly, I think this is concerning because if the teacher doesn’t even have any form of authority to handle a student who is disrupting the class how are they helping in finding a solution for punishment.

Teachers feel they almost don’t have power when they can’t do their job, they had to take leaves because they couldn’t discipline the students because the school set a rule in place so the student is can’t get discipline properly for misbehavior. It leaves them feeling like they need to a break from the school. It's understandable since they don’t all work together to find a solution for this problem in school. That’s why they feel like they need to be aggressive on their approach on arresting teens and having officers in place to keep the peace, but this is where it gets tricky, they now fall into territory on how they had to discipline students.

One article describing a trouble student with both parents who died went on to live with other family members and he said being a trouble student he thought they would give up on him just because he was use it. Instead going to a military school, it taught him discipline and they he said they didn’t give up on him that easily they gave him guidance and hope to set him on the right path. They said he is educated because they gave him hope and didn’t just give up on him so easily like you see in many of the articles trying to justify why they need so many cops in the school system I think we need people like him who has been through that period in his life where he felt like acting out was going to let people give up on him. I also think we need people to have the students back so that will talk to them before they get in trouble with the point of no return.

The article they said in the article they reflect on how each president like Obama and Trump impact our future on how education for blacks and minorities, Obama tried to implement a future for people of all walks of life so we can be treated equally and have the opportunity to succeed in this U.S. Obama even said the times where he grew up he said educators were more forgiving and they were able make mistakes and learned from them.

Now he said they have more police presence than ever and things in school aren’t being handle the way they should with understanding and respect in my opinion. I feel that president Obama had a point the school's system and society are quick to discipline without finding the real solution to the problem and therefore it causes so many violent arrest and deaths in minorities because of the stigma in society. While, our president now has only made it difficult to be equals as a minority he stereotypes people says they are the problem but, it's not the problem we have put a band aid on everything and not dealt with the problem first hand.

This being said all publics school, school administrators and law officials are pointing out problems but they aren’t many of them thinking outside the box to find solutions and not taking students into consideration when making discussions and are quick to punish the student with their zero tolerance policy and not bring professionals and people in social and psychology to better access the situation before making a final decision on whether the student get suspended or expelled.

I also do understand why they are quick to punish the students but still think it's necessary to take steps instead of covering, masking, and not resolving the issues among the U.S. school system. I also think they should involve more of the parent's decision so that they can be more accountability in the student and making them aware on what can they do straighten the student's misguidance.

Chapter 1

The introduction to the book is an approach to systems level thinking and how we as an individual should apply those concepts in our life to fulfil our goals. We have been trained to solve local issues in a sub system rather than looking at the whole system. Conventionally, we tend to forget about the system and focus on specific points. The author talks about the first airplane ever invented and how it took 30 years for that vision to evolve into commercial flights. The author strongly suggests that how the illusion of a separate, unrelated world exists and recommends creation of ‘Learning Organizations’ which will promote systems thinking through some tools and idea presented in subsequent chapters.

The five disciplines that the author writes about are summarized below.

  1. Systems Thinking: This tool allows an individual to interrelate sub-systems and solve the problems on a bigger level. It involves tools and idea which enhance our natural intuitions of systems thinking. The visions which tends to be realized in a successful manner often incorporate individuals who are aware of their actions and its consequences.
  2. Personal Mastery: It defines how an individual adapts to problems and the focus on attitude towards solving that issue. It involves periodic detailing and clarification of goals to improve the results. This is important as an organization’s capacity to gain knowledge depends upon its members’ capacity to learn.
  3. Mental Models: The author states the importance of how an opinion is formed about a topic inside a person’s mind and how they imagine certain things to be. Teams should have a shared interest and similar thought process by discussing and encouraging conversation in order to promote learning on an organizational level.
  4. Building Shared Vision: it is highly important for an organization to have a shared vision to be sustainable and successful. It is a cumulative vision of all the individual’s ideas and are not according to company’s mission statement.
  5. Team Learning: An effective team attains extraordinary results by being part of something bigger and through communication amongst individual. It is of great importance that the principles of such group be created to best suit the goals and not just follow set guidelines. In this a person’s growth is much more prominent in terms of learning rather than as an individual. Everyone can relate to this as at some point we all have been part of a sports team or in college where we complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses. This reflects in the performance of the team. Learning is a continuous process and an organization should keep adapting and evolving from past experiences.

Metanoia

The shift of mind is a result of true learning, something that could not have been done before. Grasping knowledge or information is often misinterpreted as learning but rather it should enable one to improve the innovation capacity and perceive the position in an institute.

Chapter 2

What organizations often fail to realize is the underlying defects or “disabilities” even after achieving a great level of success. Although this success is short lived, a large of companies still fail to become a learning organization in order to sustain. Some of the disabilities are discussed below.

  1. I am my position: The mindset of people only considering their role as their identity in an organization often has a lot of negative impact on the overall performance. The different department can interact with each other and improve results in a cross functional working environment.
  2. The enemy is out there: The first thing we humans do is try to blame something else for our mistakes. Instead of identifying problems and overcoming them we try to run away from it. This cripples an organization from within.
  3. The illusion of taking charge: It’s okay to be enthusiastic to solve problems and contribute in an organization but not to the extent of being aggressively proactive and increasing problem instead of solving them. Although it is quite different from being reactive, to wait for something to happen but not doing anything about it. The true taking of charge is identifying the underlying problem.
  4. The parable of the boiled frog: instead of adapting to gradual changes or threats or mind is programmed to respond to sudden changes. But attention need to be paid and small problems needs to be fixed so that it does not cause a disaster at a later point. These threats can often lead to downfall of an organization.
  5. The delusion of learning from experience: True learning is almost never achieved if the actions and consequences are far apart or even in different departments in some organizations. It might take years before the results of critical decisions are realized. Learning from experience works in an industry only when the scope of consequences are within the boundary of our learning horizon.
  6. The myth of a management team: Ideally, the function of a manager is to deal with the disabilities but the inability to solve these problems are often cause by internal politics, performance pressure, and stress and so on. The leader try and force opinions onto members and discourage discussions of any policies to try and find out underlying issues. This incompetence hinders the learning potential of the entire team

Chapter 3

The beer game is an experiment and a good example which shows that how at each level the problem was observed differently and systems thinking was not observed. It is essentially used to identify disabilities and its causes in an organization. The three players involved in the production-distribution system are Retailer, Wholesaler, and Brewery.

What was observed is that the increased demand caused build up in orders which led to inventory depletion. This caused backlogs and when the availability of beer was high, the decrease in number of orders led to loses. Primary lesson from this experiment is that structure influences behavior. It points the tendency of similar results produced from different people under similar structure. The structure in human system includes how an individual perceives the decisions and translates them to goals and actions. The interrelation between key variables influences behavior. In the beer game, each player had leverage or power to diminish the instability but they were not aware of such instability existing.

There are ways to improve score on the beer game:

Systems Approach: individual should shift their mindset from low level thinking to high level systems thinking considering consequences to their actions.
