Loyalty – Independence Issue Choosing
I hope to take steps in overcoming this issue. We are always told as auditors to have professional skepticism, but that is a quality that will degenerate as I know a person for a long period of time. One way to keep professional skepticism always intact is to come with a mindset that the clients, although may has told the truth previously, may not be true today. I have to look at the facts of the account and numbers rather than rely on something the client has told me.
Yes, it is good to be loyal and trusting in front of the client, because as an auditor, relationship building is an important skill to have. However, that does mean I completely disregard looking for supporting evidence. It may seem weird to compare the steps that auditors take to verify an account with the scientific method, but that’s what I have to do. I have to start by asking the question, do research, hypothesis, test hypothesis, analyze data, and draw a conclusion. This aspect of my personality can prove to be an issue in my career as an auditor specifically complying with the independence principle in AICPA Code of Professional Conduct.
Auditors are to remain independent in fact and appearance in relation to a client they are auditing. However, as I develop a relationship with my client and get to know them I may go above and beyond to try to help them. My sense of loyalty to the client may impair my judgment and my ability to stay independent. I may knowingly or unknowingly approve, even overlook an account during an audit to prevent from harming them. Loyalty for me goes hand in hand with trust, if I built trust with them, I usually extrapolate that they are always going to tell me the truth, which may not always be the case. I am a very loyal person which leads me to be too trusting.
Although, this is a great characteristic to have at times this can also be my downfall. I remain faithful to a person and choose to see the best in them even when it appears that they are doing something wrong. I will always choose to defend them because I am very biased as an individual when it comes to my friends and family. This is truer for the people I have had a long-term relationship with. I am so easily trusting to the point where I have been called gullible.

The Guide to Advertising on Instagram
Instagram is one of the fastest growing online photo social networking services for users to share their lives with other users. Since the site recently decided to expand its advertising platform, this is a focused channel, so Instagram advertising revenue is expected to reach $2.81 billion in 2017 - surpassing US Twitter and Google (Vizard, 2015). Instagram reports more than 400 million monthly active users (Statista, 2016).
Self-esteem & self-control in buying behaviour
The user's profile is located at the top of the list of most-followed pages on Instagram and is often used to convey marketing messages to their followers. Recently, a celebrity with the most followers has reached 92 million profiles (Instagram, 2016). Consumers believe that individuals with large numbers of subscribers are more attractive and reputable. The more followers an individual has, the stronger their perception of social influence (Jin & Phua, 2014). This is because images are spread to each follower and they may repost the images on their own profile, extending visibility to a wider audience (Scott, 2011).
In the Facebook study by Gonzales and Hancock (2011), the use of social networks will positively influence an individual's self-esteem. Positive online feedback can enhance a person's social self-esteem (Valkenburg et al., 2006). Based on some authors (Wilcox & Stephen, 2013; Thoumrungroje, 2014; Khan & Dhar, 2006), higher self-esteem of online individuals may reduce personal self-control, which usually leads to increases of impulse purchases and excessive consumption. Other researchers (Bearden, Netemeyer & Teel, 1989; Bither & Wright, 1973; Kropp et al., 2005; Rhodes & Wood, 1992) explain that people with low self-esteem are more susceptible to the opinions of others. Low self-confidence can motivate consumers to seek more opinion to help in making purchasing decisions (Bearden et al., 2001). When the information is not clear, users with low self-esteem are more likely to “give up” to try to understand the information, and those with high self-esteem would like to search for information further (Rhodes & Wood, 1992). These arguments show that consumers with low self-confidence are more likely to be influenced by celebrity endorsements on Instagram.
Source credibility
Source credibility is the level of awareness of the target audience's knowledge of the source to gain an understanding of the product/service (Teng et al., 2014; Ohanian, 1990). Source credibility is according to the trustworthy, attractiveness and ability of the communicator (Ohanian, 1990). Kutthakaphan and Chokesamritpo (2013) argue that source credibility also depends on the quality of the arguments and the persuasiveness of the spokesperson. “Quality of argument” refers to the persuasive power of argumentation in informational information (Teng et al., 2014). This had shown that when Instagram's comments or statements about products and services are valid, consumers will be positive about the brands associated with these reviews (Spry et al., 2011). When an approved product is deemed to be fake and invalid, consumers will form a negative attitude towards the brand and celebrity spokespersons (Cheung et al., 2009).
In terms of relevance on Instagram, this may be through specific issues related to certain celebrities. For example, celebrities who are singer may have more reliable and relevant endorsers of the music-related product. The conversion of images and documents on Instagram's music products may make recognized products or services more trustworthy, and then celebrities will recognize more credible sources.

Field Experience Cultural Interview
Abstract
This paper is a cultural interview of DP and her cultural heritage. Interviewed by Dawn Stump. The target audience is the rest of my Class, the purpose it to get a insight into the life and family heritage of my friend DP.
Field Experience Cultural Interview
DP was brought up in a tightknit family. Her family was very large. She had numerous siblings, uncles, aunts and both set of her grandparents. She remembers being 5 or 6, just about everyone in her family lived in the same neighborhood as she. DP’s Grandfather was a Bishop of a Church in Cleveland longer then she has been alive. They spent a lot of time together. The entire family would meet for dinner on Sunday after church. She and her parents where at the church 4 days out of 7. She loved how close her family was. He grandmother was the “Boss”, but only when her grandfather wasn’t around. Most African American families are run by the Head female. Unless your grandad is the Bishop of the church.
She remembers having fun, even though her homelife was strict. There were rules to be followed and if the rules were not followed, there were consequences. DP could not do anything without someone in her family seeing or hearing about it. That went for all the kids in her family. If one got caught, they all got in trouble, “Guilty by association”, her grandad would say. They were role models for the community. DP loved her grandad more then anything. He was a strong, smart, God fearing man, and everyone in their African American community looked up to him.
Her grandmother was a Strong Black woman. DP as she got older, followed what her grandmother taught her. DP feared no living up to her grandmother and grandfathers expectations. DP had plenty of aunts and cousin to speak out when anyone was not acting appropriately. She sometimes lived in fear that she may do something wrong and she would disappoint her parents and grandparents. That formed her life from a young age. One she would regret and learn to love.
Her family was big on Prayer and the healing power of prayer. We a church member was ill, they would go to that members house and pray with them and pray for them. Sometimes for days and days, even months. The witness the healing power of GOD. They have witnessed Doctors see the healing miraculous power of GOD, some doctors deny it and others embrace it. Patient rooms fills with praying visitors. The is a honored ritual/traditional type occasion that happens weekly in her family. They also pray for the Doctors and staff that care for their ailing member. The church raises its members that even though one maybe suffering, it is ok to accept that, because Jesus has gone to prepare a place in heaven for them, and those who believe in the everlasting life of Jesus Christ.
DP and her African American family do use Doctors to help them when they are ill, and to keep up with health maintenance. Back in the day DP states that her ancestors did not believe in the used of Doctors. They had their own doctors in the communities. Medicine men whom used herbs, spices, minerals, rituals and lay of hands on the ill with oil and prayers.
If a member of the community fell ill then died, the church would have a funeral and celebrate the members life. They would have an open casket for viewing and a remembrance dinner afterwards. This is still done today.
There are many rituals or practices used today. DP states that just lest weekend her mother made her a hottie toddy because she has a sore throat. DP believes that traditions are good, but God also made Doctors for a reason. She sees her family Doctor regularly. DP would rather find something early and do something about it versus not. She also prays about everything and every decision that needs to be made. She fears GOD and loves GOD more then anything and he will guide her way through life. He is the Center of her and her family’s life.
Her son was baptized also recently. He was cleansed by the blood of Jesus. Washed clean of all sin. She will raise him the way she was raised with some small tweaks. Mental illness is a big concern for the family. DP states that she will allow her son some freedoms. DP wants him to be able to make decisions, smart decisions about his future, with out feeling judgement. DP does not want her soon to feel how she did. She felt sometimes life was hard enough to live up to those standards set before her. She wants him to have a well-rounded life and for him to live it with no regrets. DP wants him to live a good life.
She became a pastor when she was 16. She did follow her grandfathers foot steps. She states that only thing she regrets was not spending enough time with her parents. She spent more time with her grandparents then she did her parents. It wasn’t on purpose. She loved being with them and love doing Gods work. Still to this day, she has her own church. It is based in Canton. Her grandfather is very proud of her. Both of her parents died shorty before she graduated High school. She then went on to college, she also got married had had her son.
She states she wouldn’t change a thing in her life except to spend more time with her parents. She spends a lot of time with her son. Teaching he they ways of Jesus and God the Father. He loves growing up in the church and having family around all the time. He looks forward to going to church on Sundays. He is also learning instruments so that he can be in the praise and worship group at church and one day run it. He is so cute at 5 years old.
I asked her 10 questions when we finished her interview. 1. What was you most memorable time in your life. DP stated growing up with a lot of women whom cook. She learned to cook in her grandmother’s kitchen. She would help prepare dinner every Sunday after church for the family dinner. She loved the closeness of her family.
While researching the barriers that can create barriers for African Americans and the healthcare system, I found a really good article that takes about 4 specific barriers. Perceived Discrimination, Medical Mistrust, Race Discordance, and Poor Communication. Some patients state that they have had bad experiences with their providers and never go back. Some have had lack of communication with their providers or think that a specific provider has mistreated them there fore claiming racism. DP talks about how bad some of her family members have acted out of sorts. Embarrassing themselves and the family that was with them. So they never went back to that facility.
DP states that the mental health side of their family has witnessed these acts as well. DP states that some of her family members do not see the diagnosis and refuse to take any medications for mental illness. Mental illness in prominent in the African American culture.
How do mental health conditions affect the African American Community? According to www.NAMI.org, “ African Americans sometimes experience more severe forms of mental health conditions due to unmet needs and other barriers” (National Alliance of Mental Illness, 2018). “According to the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, African Americans are 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problems than the general population”. (National Alliance of Mental Illness, 2018)
Common mental health disorders among African Americans include:
Major Depression
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Suicide, among young African American men (National Alliance of Mental Illness, 2018)
African Americans are more likely to be victims of violent crime so they suffer from PTSD. African Americans are also more likely to experience certain factors that increase the risk for developing a mental health condition.
There is a large amount of homeless African Americans. People experiencing homelessness are at a greater risk of developing a mental health condition. “African Americans make up 40% of the homeless population” (National Alliance of Mental Illness, 2018). “Exposure to violence increases the risk of developing a mental health condition such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder and African American children are more likely to be exposed to violence than other children” (National Alliance of Mental Illness, 2018).
Different reasons prevent African Americans from seeking treatment and receiving quality care. In the African American community, many people misunderstand what a mental health condition is and don’t talk about this topic. “This lack of knowledge leads many to believe that a mental health condition is a personal weakness or some sort of punishment from God and African Americans may be reluctant to discuss mental health issues and seek treatment because of the shame and stigma associated with such conditions” (National Alliance of Mental Illness, 2018).
Many African Americans also have trouble recognizing the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions, leading to underestimating the effects and impact of mental health conditions. Some may think of depression as “the blues” or something to snap out of.
Don’t let the fear of what others may think about you and your problems prevent you or a loved one from getting better. This means that, even if we don’t talk about it, most likely we have one of these illnesses or know someone who does.
DP states that many African Americans mistrust health professionals in general and avoid accessing care. While you have a reason to doubt whether professionals will mistreat you or not, don’t let this deter you from seeking the care you need to get well. There are providers still lack cultural competence and do not know how to effectively treat African Americans, but be diligent on finding one who does.

Development of Industrialization in Continental Europe from 1871 to 1914
Introduction
The industrial revolution started from the continent Europe in Britain from the second half of 18th century. It is traditionally viewed as the deepest mutation ever known to have affected men since Neolithic times. The industrial revolution shaped the face of new industrial and economically successful societies by modifying their social and economic structures and destabilizing all established hierarchies. It eventually influenced every aspect of people’s daily life. Thanks to the introducing of new high impact inventions into the world of production, which emerged in a changing intellectual environment, the human power of production was released in a spectacular way. The industrial revolution witnessed an explosion of various manufactured goods such as textile items and metal products. This helps to build the basic infrastructures such as road, canal, railways, etc. which contributed to expand market and commercialized the rural areas. The factory system, a new form of labor organization, developed progressively and started to regulate people’s life as never before. The industrial revolution helps to urbanized very rapidly in industrializing countries. (Neuss, 2015)
The annus mirabilis year 1769, as Cardwell (1972) has called it, during which James watt and Richard Arkwright patented respectively the separate condenser for the steam engine and water frame, has often been considered as the symbolic starting point of the British industrialization. The industrial revolution then swept through Europe- first Belgium and France – and the USA, before reaching Japan and Russia by the end of 19th century. (Neuss, 2015)
The world was more affected by the industrial revolution of the Great Britain and the wealthy Dutch country France. The researchers were confused how did industrial revolution started in the Great Britain but not in France. The major changes of industrial revolution had seen in the Britain and France.
Social and Political condition of Britain and France
Britain was better suited for industrial revolution than France because of its higher standard of living, and relatively stable government. The free market of Britain encouraged technological innovation and the purchase of consumer goods, while France’s stricter economy hindered these things. Britain could use the sea to easily transport goods, while France could not. It had more centralized banking system compared to France and it also did not have tariffs as bad as those in Franc.
The people in Britain had standards of living than those in France, allowing them to spend freely on things produced by the industrial revolution. British people had higher incomes than the people of France and its rapid population growth supplied the demand of labor force. Most importantly, people of Britain were generally more knowledgeable and entrepreneurial than the people in France.
The British government remained stable throughout the eighteenth century, but the French government underwent massive changes due to the French revolution and Nepoleon’s rule. During the 19th century Britain’s government was the model most liberals throughout Europe sought copy (History Home, 2016). Parliament remained in power long after the glorious revolution, allowing industrialization to progress smoothly. It also gained territory and resources from the French after the seven years’ war.
Economy of France and Britain
Prior to the 19th century, the balance between resources and the population was the major issues to determine the real wages of the worker. In the case of Britain black death killed almost one third population, which later on caused dramatic increase in the real wages of worker (Harley, 2014). And on other hand, the real wage of France and along with other European nation in 1870 was low in comparison to Britain.
In 1870 and 1913, the Gross Domestic Product per capita in Britain was $3191 and $4921 respectively (Harley, 2014). And on other hand, the Gross Domestic Product per capita in France in 1870 and 1913 was $1876 and $3485 respectively (Harley, 2014). At the time of 1870’s, the percentage of industrial structure (% of manufacturing) in Britain and France was 14% and 17% in food, drink, and tobacco, 26% and 34% in textiles and clothing, 18% and 3% in metals, and 25% and 3% in mining respectively (Harley, 2014). This data and figures indicates that, Britain were far stronger and developed in Economy and development of industrial raw materials, which lead them to the prosperity of the nation.
Development of Industry
Textiles industries were dominating the other industries during the periods of industrial revolution. Before industrial revolution, almost all countries were based on agriculture and handicrafts, which were not sufficient to boom up the economy of the nation and the world. After the industrial revolution, there was vast change in the living standard of the people and economy of the nation and the world, mostly in European countries like France and Britain. In late 18th century, industrialized nation started to develop their existing industries and companies because they were at infant age. And nation had learned from the past, industries are the backbone of any nation.
In 1900 it was estimated that 30% of the population lived on the edge of starvation. During that time, there was huge gap between working class and middle class family. In comparison with economic development rate of USA and Germany, Britain was relatively declined. Although Britain continued to be the banking capital of the world. Most of the industry had failed to update their machineries and technologies according to the time and changing condition of the global consumer and many factories were slow to use the electricity facilities. For example, by 1910 German steel production was double that of Britain and US output of coal had overtaken and was greater than Britain (History Home, 2016). From the beginning of industrial revolution Britain had used to policy of free trade tariffs to expand their market area in global market. After the industrial revolution, most of the countries erected their tariffs which caused to decrease the market area of Britain industries. The percentage distribution of the world’s manufacturing production of Britain in 1870 and 1913 was 31.8% and 14.0% (History Home, 2016). At the time of 1870’s, Britain was leading the world in terms of manufacturing production. But after almost 4 decades Britain gone very back in the race of manufacturing production.
On the other hand, France faced a problem while industrializing its nation. It did not had lots of resources and most of the coals used in the industries of France was imported from Belgium during the time of industrial revolution. Its natural resources like coal and metals were located in the eastern parts of country. Although France was the major competitor on an equal level with Britain. From the beginning France industries had developed a good image in textile industries. They were focused on the finished clothes.
France experienced a slow rate to commercialized agriculture, power driven machinery and mass production. Even by the end of 19th century, the majority of workers were employed outside of industry and factories were located mainly in a few cities in the northern part of France (Mtholyoke, n.d.). Due to development of industries basic infrastructure were being developed like railway were connecting new cities and market for the industries, road transportation was being developed, etc. France ranked 4th place in terms of manufacturing production in the world and its market share at that time was 10.3% and in 1913, France was again ranked 4th place and its market share was decreased to 6.4% (History Home, 2016). During the time period from 1870 to 1913 only few countries had increased its market share in global market, for example, USA, Russia, Germany, etc.
From 1870-1879, France and Britain produced 16.20 million of metric tons of coals and 129.45 million of metric tons of coals respectively (Munro, 2011). And from 1910-1913, France and Britain produced 39.90 million of metric tons of coals and 275.40 millions of metric tons of coals respectively (Munro, 2011). Thus, France coal output was only about 14% of total production of coal of Britain. This was because, French had very small and scattered coal deposits and mining were running in very small scale. France was mostly depended on the coals of Germany because it was closer to the largest steel factory of France. In terms of iron and steel production, France and Britain produced iron, from 1870-1879, 1.337 million of metric tons and 6.648 million metric tons respectively (Munro, 2011). From 1875-1879, France produced 0.260 million of metric tons of steels and Britain produced 0.695 million metric tons of steel (Munro, 2011). During 1910-1913, the production of steel and iron of France and Britain was 4.090 million of metric tons and 4.664 million of metric tons and 6.930 million of metric tons and 9.792 million metric tons respectively (Munro, 2011). Thus, this data also shows that, France was very slow in terms of development of industries and factories in comparison with the development of Britain industries and factories.
Textile industries was the biggest manufacturing units in terms of both employment and value of output together were textiles: the three most being woolens, cottons, and linens (but not silks in that upper range (Munro, 2011). By 1900 France had developed Europe leading automobile company led by Renault and Citroën (Munro, 2011). Due to this, France exports of automobile was double in comparison to her comparator Britain in World War I.
In terms of development and industrialization Britain was far better than the France. But if we see the data of growth of Per capita income of Britain and France from 1850 to 1910, France percentage of growth was 204% and Britain percentage of growth was 197% (Munro, 2011). France and Britain experienced roughly experienced same kind of economic growth. But keep in mind, France had reached her economic growth in 1850.
Conclusion
The time period from 1870 to 1914 is also known as the second industrial revolution. It is, however clear that, the rapid rate of path breaking inventions (micro inventions)slowed down after 1825, and picked up steam again in the last third of the century (Mokyr, 1990). Everywhere in the world, there was an update in the system of the technology and working conditions of workers in the factories and industries. Some rudimentary “systems” of this nature were already in operation before 1870: railroad and telegraph networks and in large cities gas, water supply, and sewage systems were in existence (Mokyr, 1990). These systems expanded enormously after 1870, and a number of new ones were added: electrical power and telephone being the most important ones (Mokyr, 1990). The second industrial revolution turned the large scale technological systems from an exception to a commonplace. Systems required a great deal of coordination that free markets did not always find easy to supply, and hence governments or other leading institutions ended stepping in to determine railroad gauges, electricity voltages, the layout of typewriters keyboards, rules of road, and other forms of standardization (Mokyr, 1990). The notion that the technology consisted of separate components that could be optimized individually – never quite literally true – became less and less appropriate after 1870 (Mokyr, 1990).
The second industrial revolution was in many way, the continuation of the first. This revolution directly affects the real wages and standards of living of the general people. This also shifted it geographical focus of technological leadership away from Britain to a more dispersed locus, though leadership remained firmly and monopoly of the industrialized western world (Mokyr, 1990). Finally, by changing the relation between knowledge of nature and how it affected technological practices, it irreversibly changed the way technological change itself occurs. In so doing, what was learned in these years prepared the way for many more industrial revolutions to come.

Optimize your Scheduled Interviews
Executing a transparent and successful interview can be a cumbersome task for a recruiter. You might be wondering how so? The mind-boggling questions like what to ask, how to make the evaluation and selection process fair, what not to ask occur as challenges that a recruiter has to face.
These days, jobs are surplus and the number of candidates are not ample to fill the positions. Here, the talent acquisition specialists need to focus more on better candidate selection procedures to fulfill the competitive candidate demands of various organizations.
So, let us take you on a tour to supportive interview Dos and Don’ts that may help any specialized recruiter build relationships, strengthen the brand quality, and uptick the right candidature as per the company's needs and candidate’s desired job.
Recruiter Dos and Don’ts
The interview process begins with some important steps like resume screening, telephone interviews, and more. But while optimizing your interviews, you need to consider some important questionnaires to help the candidate and your business makes most out of the whole process. These considerations include if the skills of the candidate can fulfill the needs, what talents and knowledge the candidate must own, ask yourself if you can see the specific candidate as a successful employee. All these questions are must to consider by every recruiter.
Put in Place Good Practice
What you need to do is prepare yourself. Don’t dive over the CV and ask every interviewee the same questions to make comparison easy afterward. After questioning the basics, give the interviewee a chance to ask questions from you too. Ensure you avoid asking questions like marital status, the caste of the candidate, and family plans.
Showcase Company Insights to the Candidates
Sharing and showcasing information is the best way to build trust with the interviewee. Share the insights about the job role including information on future growth, company culture, and hiring history. This will make every recruiter pick the right fit and allow the candidates too to move on if they do not find themselves the right fit for upcoming job role challenges.
Deliver the Feedback With Honesty
It is always great and helpful from the recruiter end to provide advice and tips when a person is not fit for the job role. This will encourage the candidates and make them remember you for a long time. Being honest helps the candidates find their weaknesses and where they need to work on.
Neglect Overextending Recruiting Capabilities for None
Companies face various challenges such as firing employees, resignation, and hurdles in organizational growth. All this leads to insufficient talent-hiring and adequate staffing. Here, if you are recruiting for clients then ensure if you are capable of meeting their needs or not and then move towards signing projects.
Don’t Deliver Unfit Talents
The role of every recruiter is to analyze the candidate’s qualifications and present the only one with the required capabilities. It’s a good deal to provide the candidates with opportunities but it is also important to differentiate between the candidates who can utilize the opportunities and the ones who are non-qualified.
Avoid Overselling Candidates
Neglect overselling candidates, communicate about employment gaps, and counsel how they are still the right fit for a specific job role. Hiding or considering the flaws of a candidate does not mean they are not fit for the role and communication on such topics can make them more energized and motivated.
Final Thoughts
Being the recruiters, showing value to the candidates, and serving them with respect must be the part of humanity and the interview process. The role of the recruiter is to hire a candidate who is well-skilled, technically proficient, and focuses on stability. But don’t overlook the importance of soft skills and put emphasis on every little thing for better hiring productivity and candidates getting the desired jobs.
Also, recruitment jobs abroad are making it easy for the candidates to find their dream jobs and recruiters hire qualified interviewees with the use of job portals apps and more. So, put in place the effort and let the recruiters do the rest for you.

The Information Cycle – Interview
Creativity and teaching go hand and hand, as teaching is all about helping others, Mercedes Rivas-Dear is a teacher that likes to make the lives of others better. Mercedes teaches at Wellstone International High School and specializes in Social Studies. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Urban Education and a Masters Degree in Education Technology from Concordia University. Mercedes was born in Panama and moved to the United States at age 20. Mercedes is a mother of three adult sons and six grandchildren. She has a passion for teaching and is inspired by helping students achieve their full potential. The interview took place at a coffee shop in Rosedale near her school on Monday February 4th, 2019. I chose to interview Mercedes because I am inspired with her creative personality and passion for teaching. She said that she had gained and developed her knowledge by reading everything she sees and by being a good listener. Mercedes is a very creative person and uses books, technology and people to search for information to generate ideas.
Mercedes enjoys reading books in her free time and considers herself a bookworm. She enjoys both fiction and nonfiction books. Mercedes has one room in her house that she uses as a library, which contains about 400 to 500 books and has a hard time getting rid of books. She also has about couple 100 of ebooks, which come in handy because they can be download and read wherever you are and don’t take up space on a shelf. One disadvantage she spoke of was when she was engrossed in a really good ebook, while reading on an airplane and her iPad went dead with no way to charge it, but it gave her a chance to strike up a good conversation with the person sitting next to her.
She prefers paper books because she likes to write notations in them that she can always refer back to easily. She keeps a list of books that she wants to read, so she always has them at her fingertips for a rainy or cold day. She said she reads whenever she has free time especially in the winter instead of watching tv or movies. She prefers to grab a cup coffee and snuggle by the fire and catch up on a great book. Occasionally, she will spend time at the library when searching for new books, using the libraries databases for gathering information or to ask the librarian for advise. She reminded me to make sure that I always check the library first before buying anything because it might save me some money.
She uses technology which includes the use of iPhone, iPad, tv, computer and the internet to gather information to generate ideas. When formulating questions she will use specific keywords and will do multiple searches with synonyms or alternate words to limit her searches. Her favorite search engines for the internet are Google, Yahoo, and Google Scholar. When searching she filters her results using boolean logic or advanced search tools. She said she tells her students to stay open minded because everything you read isn’t always true. She also tells her students to check the validity of information they should look to see when the information was created or last updated, if the source has reputable affiliations and checks the author’s credentials to make sure they are suitable. Lastly, she compiles and saves the information by paraphrasing it in her own words to a new file with its sources which include title, date, author, and URL. That way you can always find them again if needed.
Generally when she is looking for information that’s related to work, she will use the following mediums: library databases, websites, documentaries, Wikipedia, Youtube, scholarly articles,, apps, movies and Pinterest. When she said the word Pinterest, it was like a light bulb went on in her head and stated “That is an awesome website, you can get so many great ideas from it”. She told me about a time when she used Pinterest and found a really cool idea for a school activity for her students. It was a cup stacking team building activity. It involved giving a group of students a rubber band, four pieces of string about 2 feet long and six plastic cups. Then the groups of four students have to find a way to stack the cups into a pyramid formation using the materials given to them without touching the cups with their bare hands. The activity forces the students to work together, be creative, be cooperative and to use problem solving skills. She got great feedback from the students, and they had a lot of fun doing the activity. Plus it was just as fun to watch the students work together laughing and smiling. To make it even more challenging she added some alterations to it.
The students first were told they couldn't talk for the first 20 minutes then after they could start speaking. I found it fascinating that not only was she able to search and find this project but she was also able to be creative and alter it to fit her needs. She did mention that she likes using Wikipedia but you need to be careful because information is not always correct or up to date. She stated that it is a great starting point because it does have a lot of helpful information but should never be used for research papers. Also, she uses Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn for personal use. Her friendly advice was to make sure to check the library before purchasing anything because you could save yourself some money.
Mercedes loves to travel and meet new people, and there's no better way to learn than to engage with others and their cultures. Growing up in Panama City and later on moving to the United States has already broadened her horizon as she has learned to adapt to a new culture at a young age. She stated the best way that she learned English was by living in the United States and practicing it every day. When Mercedes is struggling to come up with new ideas on her own, she will collaborate and brainstorms with others. She uses brainstorming a lot when dealing with difficult students, look for ways to make teaching more fun, ways to motivate students, encourage class participation, and address different learning styles. She states that she always keeps an open mind. It doesn't have to mean that you accept it, but you should listen because things are always changing and there’s always room for improvement.
I noticed throughout the interview she kept reiterating that you always have to keep an open mind, and that doesn't mean that you have to accept it, but you should listen because things are always changing and there’s always room for improvement. I was not really surprised by anything she said, but it reinforced and strengthened my thinking to be curious, read and listen for that every moment we can learn something. Some similarities I noticed Mercedes mentioned that she keeps a list of books she wants to read and has a library room in her house as stated in the Little Guide to Your Well-read Life book where it mentions making a list of books you want to read and building your own library so you will always have books on hand (Leveen, 12-16).
Also Mercedes mentioned the advantages of Ebooks ease of portability and take up less space which is mentioned in “Week 2: Books, Literacy, and Reading“ (Sonsteby). Another similarity, I notice she talked about the importance of Internet sources, people as sources and listening which all are mentioned in “Week 3: Interviews and People as Sources“ (Sonsteby). Also, she stated not to trust everything you read as stated in Everything is Miscellaneous The Power of the New Digital Disorder states that some information might not be reliable and should be checked for inaccuracies (Weinberger, 140).
Both Mercedes and in “Week 4: Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Sources“ notes talked about how Wikipedia can be a good source of information and starting point, but not something you should use in a research paper (Sonsteby). I learned how easy that it was to add information to Wikipedia as we had to do it as one of our class assignments. It was cool to see that you could even see who made the changes and when. Lastly in “Week 5: News, The Information Cycle, and the Search for Truth“ notes mentioned you shouldn’t buy anything until you have check the library first because you could save yourself some money, Mercedes had the same advice about saving money (Sonsteby). Overall the interview went well, but when reviewing my notes I thought of some additional questions I wish I had asked. Next time I will make sure to record the interview because it was hard to keep up and take informative notes during the interview, in which made it hard to ask follow-up questions.

The Impact of Industrialization on the Food Systems
Introduction
This essay will highlight the “impact of the industrialization on the food system and how it has worked wonders for the developed countries in terms of feeding their population”. Food is the basic need of humans for their survival and it becomes important for the policymakers and the government to develop an effective food system will ensure continuous production and supply of the food to the people. The food system is an important mechanism that needs to be oiled well to function efficiently. The food system has evolved significantly in the last century when there was a stress on the entire food supply chain. This was the period that could easily be characterized by significant changes in production tactics, distribution, consumption, control and concentration of the market share. The third industrial revolution has provided new impetus to the food system that has changed the landscape of the food systems all over the world, especially in developed countries. Technological advancements were also the major force behind the industrialization of the food system for the good of it and that has contributed significantly in increasing the efficiency of the food supply chain (Latham, 2015).
Industrialization and Food System
Industrialization has always been a major force that has changed the landscape of human civilizations across centuries. The first industrial revolution bought in the transition of from hand production methods to more mechanized production process which contributed significantly to the process of the food supply chain. The second industrial revolution furthers the use of machines and technology for production and that enhanced the food production and food supply chain process more efficiently. The gradual process of enhancement kept on increasing with new mechanized systems being integrated into the food systems and the food supply chain process. Developed world and countries have adopted the industrial process within their food supply chain process effectively and that allowed them to enhance their whole food systems with increased food productivity and effective distribution of the foods. The developed world has a significant increase in their food storage and has been able to effectively manage the growing demands of food even in the modest seasons (McMichael, 2012).
Technology within Food Systems
Technology is at the forefront of all the industrial revolution and for that matter becomes an integral part of the food systems. Technological advancements in the last 50 years have exponentially helped the countries all over the world to enhance their food systems. The developed countries were the first to integrate technology within their food systems and for that matter were able to produce food at a fast pace and at cheaper cost of production as compares to other countries. If we take the instance of America and how they successfully integrated technology into their food production systems, it is important to note they were effectively been able to provide adequate food to the majority of their population. The USA and subsequently developed countries successfully utilized the technological advancements to enhance their food systems and the food supply chain processes (McMichael, 2012).
All the developed countries were able to transcend the seasons with the help of the technology with a cornucopia of the year-round vegetables and fruit supplies. The infusion of technology to produce foods have allowed the producers to manage a steady supply of foods even during off or modest seasons. The technical transformations within the food production and agro-based foods made the production process move at a faster speed and in increased capacity. The agro-based food, with the help of technology, were processed faster and been able to store it for a longer period. Technology changed the processing and storage process where both the activities saw significant changes about how earlier the processes were being followed by the producers of the food (Weis, 2017).
Global Food System
The developed countries and their adoption of technology in enhancing their food system have definitely affected the global food system in a positive way. The USA developed a vast and unique system of industrialized agricultural production which was focused majorly on the commodity crops for use in the processed foods, animal feed and crops destined for the exports. The same strategy was adopted by various other developed countries like France, UK, Germany and many more where they not only were feeding their own population but also were exporting the same to other parts of the world. The global food system was deeply impacted by the industrialization of the food system in ways where exports and imports become a major part of the food systems. Countries that were not been able to produce a certain type of food products can now easily imported the same from other countries that is producing it and that made the whole food system an inclusive one and in the providing impetus to the economy of the country exporting the food commodities (Koc, Sumner and Winson, 2017).
The global food system was largely influenced by the industrialization and technological processes where not only the production but the whole distribution process was impacted. The effective processing of the food commodities and packaging and distribution of it were largely influenced by the technological implications. The food commodities could now be moved from place to place at an increased pace and with precise distribution networks. The move from ships to trains and to airplanes was all the gradual process and were part of the industrialization process where the food commodities can ow be moving at a brisk pace and with effective precision (Weis, 2017).
Population Increase and Food Security
The population of the world has grown exponentially in the last 50 years which is now almost double of what it was in 1980 or so. The increasing population has put serious pressure on the demand and supply processes where it becomes increasingly important to out-weigh the demand through effective food supply chain processes. In this context, it becomes important to understand the dynamics of the population rise. The developing countries are more plagued with the population rise problem, where countries in Southern Asia like India and Bangladesh and in the Sub-Saharan areas are mostly facing the rising population problem. If we take the instance of India which has now the second largest population in the world and which is also a developing country that is majorly facing the problems of food shortage in one form or another where they have to rely on the exports to feed their population. The same story goes with various other countries also and for that matter, it becomes important for these countries to adopt newer technology into their food systems to increase their productivity in order to meet their increasing food demands (William, 2014).
Food is considered to be the right of every human being and the United Nations promoted the idea of food security where they take care of the countries and its population does not have the resources and the capabilities to feed their own population. It is a well-documented fact that there is an imbalance across the world in terms of food supplies and productivity and which is causing hunger problems in many countries. The problem can only be addressed with proper management of the global food system where it becomes the responsibility of the global food leaders and producers to contribute significantly to the food system process in terms of supplies of food commodities (Popkin, 2013).
Impact on Food Quality and Environment
The industrialized food production system has bought a host of new health, environmental, economic and social problems that is yet to be solved. In addition to this, global climate change is a new challenge that is impacting the food system in direct and indirect ways. The quality of the food has also been compromised to produce cheaper food commodities. The whole food system may have enhanced its process in terms of production and distribution process, but it definitely has compromised on the quality of the food that is being served. The increased demand is promoting adulteration and hybrid production systems are compromising with the quality of the food and that certainly is a major problem for all the people in today’s times (William, 2014).
The industrialized food system is also putting stress on the environment where pollution and increased use of the resources is resulting in global climate change that clearly is showing in the form of water shortages, floods and increasing global temperature. All these factors have imbalanced the entire food system processes in terms of shortage of supplies.
Conclusion
Food system is the lifeline of human civilization and it becomes important for the policy makers to keep it in shape to feed the people. The industrialization process has enhanced the food system in terms of productivity and distribution process. However, in turn, it is creating new problems in many areas like the environment and health which is posing various questions about the impact of the industrialization of the food system. In that case, it becomes imperative for the policy makers to keep a tab on all the aspects of the food system to manage it effectively and efficiently.

Initial Influences on Industrialization in Britain
When we pose a question why industrialization revolutions happened first in Britain in the 18th century, it can be said that several factors, such as geography and natural sources, trade and human capital caused this progress.
With the invention of steam power, some resources were needed to run steam the power machine and in that point, England had proper conditions to reach coal and coal was an important influence to initiate industrialization.Since coal was easily worked, different from other supplies like wood, which was not appropriate to transport. Besides, coal ensured more energy than wood. Moreover, Neuss(2016) explains that thanks to property of geological conditions of Britain, it had lots of access to water, surrounded by sea and crisscrossed by river, This helped to hold transportation of huge quantities of raw material and finished goods. In addition to this, as mentioned by Jeremy Black in videos, England had so many colonies, this provides England to obtain raw material easily. In other words, great Britain’s colonial empire created a ready supply of consumers to purchase its manufactured goods.
Colonial Empire also provided a ready-made market for surplus goods, providing further impetus to entrepreneurs and new industrialists. Thus, it is possible to say that England's geography really lent to industrialization.Britain embraced scientific evolutions and new technological development. For example, in the article, The Industrialization Evolution Begins in England(1760-1850)(n.d) it is stated that craftspeople were encouraged to apply new technological and scientific changes and some historians claim that this intellectual climate in England can be considered as a key point of industrialization. Political stability is another factor that causes industrialization. For example According to Mcfadden(2019), changes history through the industrial revolution like the Glorious Revolution, in1689, had primarily small, but then great cumulative impact on industrialization. Due to the Glorious Revolution, goverment began to be stable steady, so England was suitable place to do business without taking consideration of brand-new government taking place and laws changes. Thus, England was sen as perfect location to settle down and to do business.
In conclusion, when we think about underlying reason of industrialization, it can be said that increase in consumption sources depending on agricultural progress led to necessity of new range of products. In other words, basically accessibility of sources and development in scientific and technological areas and economical properties triggered the processing raw material to convert new products thanks to mechanical implementations.

The Authoritarian Path to Industrialization
While political theorists like Max Weber and Crude Dependency theorists were largely pessimistic about the development prospects for late developers, Country X's development story has established a base for an alternative argument (Weber, Grosfoguel). Country X's journey from having half the GDP per capita as that of Country Y in 1950, to twice that of Country Y in 2010 has challenged perspectives. I argue that Country X's fast-paced development was plausibly a result of a period of state-led development under authoritarian rule because a strong bureaucracy helps to mobilize limited resources towards critical industries and keeps the economic elites and core nations from exploiting the resources of the country to their own advantage. In the following paper, I will analyze the conditions in Country X that must have stimulated the establishment of an authoritarian, interventionist regime, which plausibly served as the base for a strong bureaucracy necessary to ensure proper allocation of the state’s resources and protection from exploitation.
Country X plausibly had an authoritarian regime whose establishment was encouraged by conditions such as extreme poverty and geopolitical pressure to develop quickly, along with an international demonstration effect from richer countries. As explained by Gerschenkron, being relatively backward as compared to other industrialized and militarily developed countries in the twentieth century led to a sense of insecurity among the poorer nations as they were in a vulnerable position (5-30). This situation of urgency called for rapid economic development and industrialization. Relative backwardness does not measure how economically backward a country is in absolute terms but in relative terms to its neighbors.
When a country is relatively backward, the citizens of the country compare their lifestyle to that of the citizens of developed countries and aspire to be like them. This phenomenon is known as international demonstration effect, by virtue of which the citizens of country X were motivated to desire economic development even more strongly than before (Gerschenkron 5-30). This meant that there was not only geopolitical pressure internationally but also domestic pressure from the citizens of country X to achieve quick development. Such pressure to develop quickly calls for state-led development. According to Gerschenkron, while early developers like England had market-led and middle developers like Germany had bank-led courses of economic development, late developers like Russia, with a need to catch up to its competitors quickly, embarked on state-led industrialization (5-30). The interventionist role of the state becomes imperative to achieving economic development quickly. A combination of the international demonstration effect and the geopolitical pressure to industrialize rapidly plausibly made the people of Country X more inclined towards an authoritarian regime.
The spirit of authoritarianism is difficult to encompass in a country with relatively richer conditions or one where fast-paced industrialization isn’t seen as a necessary requirement. Country X would likely not have become authoritarian if the necessary conditions like extreme poverty, relative backwardness or international demonstration effect did not exist. Consider a country where the individuals are relatively richer, and the country is not under immediate geopolitical threat from its industrialized or militarily developed neighbors. Such countries generally have a market-led development because they do not have a set urgent timeframe within which they are expected to industrialize. Such was the case with England when it was industrializing, and this led to England developing a liberal democracy with minimum interference of the state in the market or the process of development (Gerschenkron 5-30). Country Y was likely not affected by geopolitical pressure or international demonstration effect because it was already relatively rich. Industrialization must have been seen as a slow and time taking process and not something to be achieved immediately. As such, Country Y probably never felt the need to lean towards authoritarianism. Gerschenkron explains this concept as the political ideology or political developments being the product of prevailing economic conditions (5-30). A need to rapidly industrialize pushes a country towards authoritarianism while wealth keeps it from it.
Even the Dependency theorists, who advocated for dependent development, believed that the course of industrialization of late developers would be distorted from that of the path of the early developers in the sense that it would generally be authoritarian and state led (Grosfoguel 347-374). It is important to note that both these theories demonstrate that late developers with an urgency to industrialize would be dependent on authoritarian regimes, whose establishment is directly associated with factors such as poverty, international demonstration effect and geopolitical pressure to develop quickly. This causality clearly suggests that an absence of these factors would lead to the establishment of a more liberal and democratic political ideology. This has been seen in the case of early developers like England and the United States, both of which are liberal democracies. Country X’s GDP per capita was half that of Country Y in 1950. This makes it plausible to believe that the extreme poverty conditions in Country X, along with the domestic and international pressure led to an authoritarian regime. Considering that Country Y was relatively much better off than Country X, it can be assumed from our analysis that authoritarian conditions never prevailed in Country Y.
An authoritarian regime lies at the base of a strong bureaucracy because the leaders are not faced with a constant threat of losing power and can thus establish an autonomous state insulated from domestic pressures (Johnson 136-164). In a democracy, the government is elected by the people, so it becomes difficult for the state to enact long term economic policies that might at first prove a sacrifice for some people even though they might be for the greater good of the state in the long run. The periodic elections whose results often depend on communal divides in society keep the bureaucracy busy in trying to appease the masses in preparation for the next election. The coalition governments and the permanent threat to power never grant the rulers a sense of absolute power. Although such democratic settings encourage civil rights, they often prove inefficient in terms of economic policy decisions.
Members of the government opposed to each other on issues never allow the path to a robust and long-term economic policy decision. The bureaucracy is ineffective and inefficient and often divided. In an authoritarian setting, however, the ruler has absolute power and no fear of losing position; it becomes easy for the ruler to implement policies which are beneficial for the state in the long run while remaining insulated from domestic pressures (Johnson 136-164). As explained by Johnson, an autonomous state has a strong bureaucracy stemming from politicians’ hold on power and protection from individual pressures while making policy decisions (136-164). It is plausible that Country X’s authoritarian regime structure helped it develop a strong and rigid bureaucracy, which played a critical role in its developmental path.
A strong bureaucracy is essential to ensure that natural resources are mobilized for the development of critical industries. Late developers often had huge natural resources but lacked the technology to produce manufactured products with them. The labor wages in such poor countries was generally much lower than that in the developed nations. This gave the poorer nations a “comparative advantage” in the form of lower cost in the extraction of natural resources. However, as Crude Dependency theorists suggest, exporting natural resources to and importing finished goods from core nations leads to a form of dependency trap for the poorer nations (Grosfoguel 347-374). A weak government would remain trapped and lose its resources. Although Neo Classical Economists like Dornbush support free markets, in this case, a developmental state with a strong bureaucracy can help to break away from this dependency trap by forcing natural resources to be used in the development of critical industries like steel and technology instead of export (69-85; Johnson 136-164). Key industries can be supported through explicit bank financing and tariffs and taxes on foreign competitors.
Although this means that the poor country would have to give up its comparative advantage, it serves beneficial in the long run as the country becomes self-sufficient and technological advanced. Johnson, in his East Asian State-Centered Model focuses on Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore, all of which practiced a similar state interventionist policy (136-164). He enlists autonomy from society, economic interventionism and business-friendly policies as the core characteristics of a developmental state (Johnson 136-164). A strong bureaucracy with an aim to rapidly industrialize encapsulates all these qualities. Autonomy from society implies insulation from domestic and societal pressures while making decisions. State intervention in industrialization should be through long term and business-friendly policies such as no cost loans, sponsoring research and discouraging unions (Johnson 136-164).
The lack of a strong bureaucracy will lead to economic exploitation of natural resources by economic elites and richer countries to their own advantage. When making decisions in the process of industrialization, it becomes necessary to keep the long-term economic goals of the country in mind. Powerful interest groups and lobbyists, large landowners and trade unions should not exert influence over economic policies. Policies should be created by bureaucrats insulated from special interests of the electorates and not by outside groups pressuring the state to pursue goals favorable to their interests (Johnson 136-164). Johnson requires that in order to achieve this, states must have a highly professional bureaucracy staffed by educated people with a common interest to reach a goal of development (136-164). With a weak government in place, economic elites in society can easily exploit laborers and natural resources to their own advantage. It becomes easier to buy off politicians and economic benefits accrue only to the elites. When late developers export natural resources and import finished goods, often the value added in production becomes more than the original value of the resource and the poor nations end up paying more for the finished goods than they had earned from exporting the resources.
Crude Dependency theorists call this an Unequal Exchange in International Trade. Declining Terms of Trade denote how the richer countries increase the prices of their goods steadily and significantly while the poor nations cannot raise the prices of the natural resources as they would then lose their comparative advantage. Such a situation leads to economic exploitation of the poor nation at the hands of the core nations (Grosfoguel 347-374). A strong bureaucracy can prevent this drain of resources and wealth by regulating foreign trade and foreign investment. As seen in Johnson’s East Asian Model, Taiwan and South Korea limited the amount of freedom foreign corporations had when trading in the country (136-164). They often forced joint ventures with domestic companies which aided the transfer of technology to the poor nation. Moreover, strong governments can enact policies such as Import Substitution Industrialization and Export Oriented Industrialization to further strengthen the economy of the country (Johnson 136-164). Crude dependency theorists suggest that when a country is controlled by corrupt and inefficient governments, richer nations can easily exploit it as the weak leaders of the country are not able to negotiate advantageous deals with the foreign nations (Grosfoguel 347-374). A strong bureaucracy must have created a significant difference in Country X’s industrialization as seen in Johnson’s Model (136-164).
A robust system of investment in critical industries and export-oriented policies along with protection from exploitation backed by a strong bureaucracy can help a country quickly industrialize in the face of geopolitical pressure. As is clear from our analysis of Countries X and Y, a state-led, authoritarian government in Country X helped it industrialize much faster than Y. The significance of authoritarianism in the rapid development of a nation has been recognized by all three authors in our study. Gerschenkron talks about how an authoritarian, state-led development with an emphasis on heavy industry, aided by borrowing technology from richer nations can invoke rapid development (5-30). Johnson, in his model, demonstrates how an autonomous state with pro industrial policies and emphasis on the development of critical industries can catapult a poor nation into industrialization (136-164).
Dependent Development theorists also point out that such rapid industrialization is bound to be less egalitarian and more authoritarian (Grosfoguel 347-374). It is thus a mix of factors such as authoritarianism, a strong bureaucracy, long term economic policies and protection from exploitation that helped Country X develop so quickly, while Country Y lacked such characteristics which kept it from developing at the same pace. However, this raises moral questions about whether authoritarianism is justified on ethical grounds just because it enables quicker development, or whether fast-paced development cannot be achieved without authoritarianism at all? Although it is difficult to answer, this analysis seems to be the most convincing theory for the given situation and serves as a helpful tool for comparison in future studies.

Industrialization in European Countries
Industrialization means innovations and development in technology which substitute machines for human skill and refers to the transformation of a country or state’s industrial economy. Production of textiles, metals and steam had just been invented before 1870’s. After the period of 1870 investors started to invest and concentrate on the production of steel, electrical items, machines etc. Electricity Power turned out to be the new type of vitality and the result of every one of these was the creation of railroad, steamships and electrical items. New innovations and ideas about modern industrialization initiated with full swing as people could not imagine lives without them. This made a huge change in the industry of Europe starting at the British Empire and spreading across the continent. Though many interventions occurred in this period (1871-1914) the industrialization had made a huge progress throughout Europe. The development of industry also helped the blooming of the overall economy of the states as industrialization also means the overall of part of the economy dominated by industrial economy.
Prior to some of the industrial giant countries like Germany, Britain, France etc other factors also affected on this matter of subject politically. The year 1871 marked the beginning of the German Empire under the Prussian crown, resulting in only restricted power to the house of legislation and most power to the chancellor Otto von Bismarck. This allowed him to form alliances with other parties (German center- left parties) thereby establishing legal coded, banking systems, railroad etc. with the rise of power of Bismarck he formed a anti-Papal campaign a movement to eliminate Catholics who, he thought, could never show true loyalty towards the sate because of their sincerity toward Rome. This movement created lead to creation of many military industries. Thereby, creating flourishing economy and increase in the overall population. This was a huge turning point for the industrial revolution. On the other hand rise in wages of the employed workers in the particular sector(industrial) was also observed. Productivity in the labor increased by 1.5 percent each year with result in increase the outcomes. By the end of mid 1870s the annual average rate of growth was 4.6 per cent and this economic boom began with the railway investment.
Particularly, in 1870 1,500 kilometers of railroad rate had finished when this number achieved its peak in 1874 and marginally diminished by one year from now. From that point the net household item remained in a similar dimension until 1880 when it developed with a normal rate of 2.5 percent. It is shockingly that speculation into the business in 1870-75 was 10.6 percent while in 1880s it was 41.4 percent. The recuperation from a little stagnation between these initial five years accompanied an ascent in foreign export. For instance, between 1911-1912 export developed at a yearly normal rate of development of 5.5 % and in 1908-1913 German trade were 60 percent higher than the French. Coal, steel, sugar in 1890s and potato were the significant results of export. Moreover, the decrease in financing costs happened in light of the fact that the cash supply climbed quickly. Following seven years, in 1887 until 1890, another boom had occurred in Germany and 948 stock organizations were established. In the following two years some little interventions backed off the procedure of the modern improvement yet from 1892 to 1913 net local item went at a similar dimension of development, at 3.3 percent. Without a doubt the best monetary thriving was in 1896-1899 when 1,129 new stock organizations were established.
Particularly, steel production multiplied somewhere in the range of 1879 and 1882 and press generation ascended about half. Likewise, by 1902 the yearly normal yield of steel per works in Germany was 75,000 tons contrasted with the normal in Britain of 40,000. Another incredible achievement was in the electric power as Germany in 1913 was creating 8,000 million kilowatt hours which mean 20% more electrical vitality than the total of Britain, France and Italy. Obviously we can't overlook the synthetic ventures where the instruction framework was the reason for the augmentation of these businesses. A general notice for the Germany Empire is that all the mechanical advancements, the upgrades in the instructive framework and the noteworthy ascent in the population drove the nation to deliver more items and extend her impact. The record of accomplishment is commonly taken to be the development in yield of fundamental crude materials, for example, coal, steel, substantial synthetic compounds and designing products.(industrialization in ninetieth – century Europe)

Harriet Jacobs, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
The issue of slavery in the 1800’s had the means of being very brutal and carried dehumanizing factors that affected the lives of many men, women, and children who were colored. The autobiography, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, highly demonstrated the cruelty slaveowners exhibited towards their slaves, whom they saw as merely just property, and discussed the numerous hardships slaves were forced to endure.
Even though she was born into slavery, Harriet Jacobs was fortunate enough to partake in what one might call a happy childhood. She herself admitted that “though we were all slaves, I was so fondly shielded that I never dreamed I was a piece of merchandise” (11,12), implying that Harriet was fortunate enough to not be mistreated during her childhood and had some sort of family figure in her life, whether it be her parents, who died when she was young, or more importantly her grandmother, who constantly provided her with guidance and support. For many slaves, including Jacobs as she discovered once she got older, life was constantly a fight between life and death. The many struggles that slaves faced resulted in constantly thinking that “death is better than slavery” (Jacobs 96) and was a repetitive idea that revolved around the lives of the enslaved. Harriet emphasized that as a slave, they were “entirely unprotected by law or custom… [and] entirely subject to the will of another” (86), meaning they had no sense of security or even a slight taste of freedom throughout their servitude.
Jacobs also mentioned that while slavery was excruciating for men, it was “far more terrible for women” (119). Not only were women put to work just as hard as men were, they were also forced to endure harsh punishments and partake in whatever deeds their masters desired. Harriet had a significant understanding of this as she experienced it all throughout her teenage years. From continuous sexual advances from her master, to putting herself in an intimate relationship with another man for a slither at a chance to be free and watching her children become slaves simply because they had to take the fate of their mother. Those few who were fortunate enough, specifically Harriet’s grandmother, even went as far as to working endlessly as an attempt to save up money to buy their children back. Not to mention, the word “buy” was consistently used throughout this reading. Slaves had no choice but to think about themselves as property, and while in the hands of vicious masters, they repeatedly wished someone else would buy them to avoid further maltreatment.
Many slaves were relentlessly faced with cruelties from not just their masters, but any white persons in the country. Every year, on New Year’s Day, slaves and their children were auctioned off to slave traders. This day was dreadful for slaves who had become mothers, as they helplessly watched their children being taken from them. Harriet specifically mentioned a woman, who had seven children that were all sold and taken away from her that day. Slave traders indeed showed no form of compassion towards slaves and their children. The woman “begged the trader to tell her where he intended to take them” but unfortunately, he refused because he knew “he could sell them, one by one, wherever he could command the highest price” (Jacobs 27). Most slaves also were hardly given much to consume on a daily basis, but there were those few who were brave enough to take a chance at stealing some food for the sake of survival. Those that were caught faced severe punishment, as Jacobs discussed about a master as cruel as they come, and that a slave “who stole a pig from this master, to appease his hunger, was terribly flogged” (73).
Jacobs herself also experienced many cruelties throughout her years as a slave. Harriet had to survive years of anguish from her master’s advances towards her and had no means of defending herself. At an attempt to outsmart her master, Dr. Flint, Jacobs reluctantly pursued an intimate relationship with another white man and soon bore two of his children. Unfortunately, Dr. Flint refused to sell her or her children and constantly reminded Jacobs that her children were “an addition to his stock of slaves” (Jacobs 94). Many times, throughout the infancy of her first born, Harriet found herself wishing for her baby to die, as she could never forget that he was a slave and felt uneasy about allowing him to live a life filled with servitude (Jacobs 96). This highlights the extent of how dehumanizing slavery was to those who fell victim to it solely because of their skin color and how they greatly believed that death was a better fate than a chance of living.
For most of the slaves, the only way of surviving with their bondage was to simply obey their masters’ orders and comply with what was expected from them. They were smart enough to take their punishments and cruel treatments as they came, since they knew they were not allowed to fight back, or else circumstances would be far worse for them. It was rare that slaves tried to escape from their master’s grasp because of the horrid stories they would hear about those that fled to the North. Slaveholders would infiltrate these lies into their slaves’ heads to encourage them that they were safer in their hands. Harriet discussed a young man named Benjamin, who she thought of as a brother, “with a spirit too bold and daring for a slave” (29). During an altercation with his master, Benjamin “had thrown to the ground his master – one of the richest men in town” (Jacobs 33), and soon feared for his life. It was rare for slaves to take action and defend for themselves against their masters, and when Benjamin tried to escape out of fear, he failed and was later imprisoned. When offered to attend back to his master, he strongly refused, symbolizing how dreadful slavery was and that being imprisoned with nothing but rags and scraps of food was preferable than the conditions he faced with his slaveholder.
Longing for the so-called freedom in the North, once Harriet arrived, she realized it was not as free as she expected. She was quick to observe that though the states in the North were labeled as free, they strongly enforced segregation laws and did not hesitate to discriminate against people of color. Harriet became aware of this on a train in New York as she was told that “they don’t allow colored people to go in the first-class cars” (Jacobs 247). Jacobs was rather stunned by this and dismayed at the fact that the North mimicked the customs of slavery in the South (Jacobs 248). While in Albany, New York, Harriet was victim of yet another act of discrimination; however, this one came from a colored man. Jacobs was appalled at his actions when he aggressively addressed to her “‘Get up! You know you are not allowed to sit here,’” but she remained in her place and refused to move (Jacobs 264). When glancing around to see if any other nurses were treated the same way, she realized that “they were all properly waited on” (Jacobs 264). Due to the fact that a colored man was enforcing this exclusion of another person of color, it is clearly seen how discriminative the North was and how it deprived those of color from basic freedoms, such as not being able to sit where they desired or attend a public space intended for whites. The many behaviors of discrimination and segregation Harriet Jacobs faced while in the North leads to the awareness that the North functioned as an apartheid society ruled by white supremacy instead of being the free land many hoped to reach.
Despite the fact that both the North and South believed that the United States was a “white man’s nation” and strongly integrated the belief that colored people were inferior, the northerners were deemed to be less cruel than those in the South and still took a stance at fighting to free the enslaved. A large number of white northerners felt threatened by the slaves and perceived that slavery was jeopardizing their liberty as workers. In reality, it can be understood that the North was not actually fighting to free the slaves, but moreover they were likely fighting over concern for their welfare and to preserve their prosperity as workers.
Throughout Harriet Jacob’s narrative, it is commonly conveyed how mistreated slaves were and the many hardships they had to endure during their servitude. Even while fleeing to the free North, people of color were not allowed to live as free persons and were not given the features of a free life due to the idea that colored people were inferior in America.

Senior Interview
I did my senior interview on a man who is approaching his sixty-seventh birthday in June of this year. The gentleman’s name I interviews was Elmer. Elmer is the youngest of two sisters and one brother, who all grew up in a small town in New Jersey. Both of Elmer’s parents died before his twenty ninth birthday, his mother dying of a young age after suffering from tuberculosis, which caused her to live her last years of life quarantined to a sanatorium. When I asked Elmer about his thoughts on aging, he answered by stating that aging is “a natural progression laid out by God. I am not scared to die and instead, I look at each day as a gift. I don’t see aging as a positive or a negative, but just a normal, natural process.” Elmer concluded by adding that, of course, dreaded aches and pains do in fact come with age, but so does increased wisdom and the opportunity to continue to learn about oneself. . As the conversation between Elmer and I continued on however, I noticed that he did have concerns about aging, which became more apparent in his references to financial issues as well as the poor job he indicated he has done at living a healthy lifestyle.
When asked if Elmer if his thoughts have changed about aging in the past twenty years, he mentioned that “financially, he blew it. Twenty years ago I was in a great financial position, and now I have nothing. I can barely make the rent for my apartment, have no retirement and I’m scared for that reason.” Elmer was married and divorced two times, and commented that the second divorce, coupled with his own “detrimental behaviors and bad decisions” led to the state he is in today. Without prompting, Elmer went right into a conversation about how unhappy he is with his lack of effort to take proper care of himself. Elmer explained that currently he works twelve hour days, smokes heavily, drinks alcohol in excess and follows a “bad diet” filled with fast, easy foods that are usually high in fat and little nutritional value. In addition, he has had a heart attack and suffers from diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome, is overweight, and has high blood pressure and high stress in his life. In addition, Elmer mentioned that he has had changes in his oral health and over the past few years has had three teeth removed. Finally, Elmer had a recent scare when he contracted a nosocomial infection, MRSA, after an operation on an infected wound site located on his foot, which kept him out of work for weeks.
At this point, based on Elmer’s honest answers to my questions, I asked him what he thought nurses and other health care professionals can do to assist people like him at reaching their goals of a healthy lifestyle. Elmer responded by stating “well, you can’t blame the doctors. There is plenty of information out there and in our society people sue left and right and blame others constantly, but it is ultimately up to the individual to take responsibility for his [or her] own wellness.” In addition, John stated that there is every opportunity to be healthy but that “one huge important thing is that [health care providers] need to care. People should not be made to feel that they are being rushed from nurse to doctor on an assembly line without having the chance to ask questions or engage in conversation.” Elmer provided details of the doctor that he sees on a regular basis who, “does not overload his schedule with patients, and actually has patience” and concluded that a little more quality time spent with patients could go a long way in terms of patient outcomes. He also emphasized the importance of promoting independence and autonomy in older adults because he feels that as “soon as someone ends up in a nursing-home and is told when and where to do things, loneliness and loss of self-concept contribute to a rapid decline in health.”
While interviewing Elmer, it seemed that to identify at least two strategies that he has used to promote healthy aging and wellness was going to prove difficult, as most of our conversation was focused on his feelings of failure at promoting his own wellness. At one point, I even asked John this very question: what strategies have you used to promote yourself knowing your getting older? His response was that he is a “terrible example” and is very disappointed in what he has done with his health—that he has done the “opposite of healthy in every way possible.” At this point, I acknowledged Elmer’s disappointment with himself and then turned his attention to the fact that he had mentioned tennis and bike riding earlier in the interview. When I asked if he would consider exercise a strategy that could promote healthy aging, Elmer agreed that it does help to promote healthy aging and described to me that despite being a smoker, and at times overweight, he had engaged in moderate to vigorous exercise on a regular basis for most of his life. The few times in Elmer’s life that he gave up drinking alcohol, he was actively participating in a rehab program and mentioned that “I lost weight, and I felt great. I would play basketball every day and no one could believe that an old geezer like me could beat them, but I did!” I believe that if Elmer had guidance and encouragement to get involved in a social network, or organization, centered around physical and mental activity, he would find it much easier to make some healthy changes to his lifestyle. Although John admitted that he currently does not exercise, he said if anything about his current lifestyle changes, it will be that he will mix more activity into his daily routine.
Another strength that I believe has helped Elmer significantly with him aging is his continued faith in his religion. With everything that Elmer has gone through in his life he has always had the utmost faith in God. During the interview, Elmer stated on several occasions that his unhappiness with the way he has treated his body stems from beliefs that God gives each of us a body that we should cherish and treat with greatest respect. Elmer also commented that “without faith I am not sure I would still be alive today” while talking about some of the more difficult times he has been through with alcoholism, drugs and depression. As previously mentioned, Elmer is concerned about the potential for loneliness if he should require assistance with living. I believe that his faith in God and aging as a natural process will help him to continue to be an active member of a religious community and to deal constructively with any worries about aging. Elmer currently belongs to a church community and uses this membership as a means for support, guidance and friendship.
Elmer commented that “if there’s only so much money to go around, the nonproductive are not going to get any. For example, they’ll just look at me as a smoker my whole life and say that I shouldn’t get any assistance, pretty much, I’m going to be nothing when I retire and need assistance.” These emotional statements are at the heart of many older adults’ concerns and unfortunately there does not seem to be a clear or optimistic view for the future since increasing numbers of elders will require assistance and therefore additional resources.
Another major thing that came about in this interview relates to the anxiety that some older adults begin to feel when they think about the possibility of requiring nursing-home care. Elmer made several comments about the fact that he is divorced, single and that his children do not live near him while explaining that this has created a fear of being lonely in his older years. Not only is Elmer’s concerned with potential loneliness, however he expressed his beliefs that once a person enters a nursing-home, their mental health deteriorates much more rapidly than their physical health. When John was discussing his recommendation that nurses and other health care professionals should instill more caring and “less dictating” in their practice, he expressed concerns about the loss of autonomy that one experiences when living in a nursing-home. Elmer’s view on nursing-home care is that people are told what to do and when they can do it with little regard for each person’s individual preferences and choices. He stated that an assisted living facility that promotes mental, social and physical engagement opportunities while supporting individual lifestyles and decision-making would be an ideal living situation for someone in their later years of life. I believe that this is exactly what Elmer was discussing however, an increased demand for resources, a growing number of elderly people requiring assistance and less than ideal numbers of nurses available in the workforce creates time constraints and daily challenges for nurses to create the ideal living environment for each individual.
As previously mentioned, Elmer has already had three teeth removed, struggles financially and therefore eats cheap, unhealthy foods, works long hours and often times skips meals and binges later, drinks alcohol in excess, does not exercise and is a smoker. While many of these behaviors could potentially be modified, it does not change the fact that Elmer is still at risk for, and most likely already suffering from, poor nutritional health going into his late sixties. The Nutrition Screening Initiative Checklist found in Gerontological Nursing, which is used to evaluate the health status of individuals, states that one in five adults skip meals daily while only thirteen percent eat the minimum requirement of fruits and vegetables. Elmer is aware of how his habits and circumstances are affecting his health, however he mentioned that he just no longer has the “grit to try to be reasonably healthy.” I believe this is an important concept in gerontological nursing because it is a reality that many patients will come from similar backgrounds that John has, and therefore nurses need to make an effort to understand that they may have endured various struggles before reaching retirement age in an effort to avoid making assumptions or judgments about how they have cared, or not cared, for their health.
An important realization that came out if my interview with John was an understanding of how often we stereotype certain behaviors or ailments as being part of the natural process of aging, when in fact these might be the results of how an individual has taken care of his or her self and do not necessarily apply to all older adults. In the case of Elmer , his lifestyle habits will play a large role in his quality of life as an older adult, and he is the first to admit that his situation could be drastically different had he chosen to live his life a certain way. Older adults such as Elmer are at risk for poor nutrition, adjustment disorders and loneliness, but this is not true for every older adult. It is important to remember that not all older adults are unhappy or unhealthy and many individuals may have lived their lives in a manner that promoted optimal wellness that has carried over into their later years of life.
I think the most important insight that I obtained from doing this interview is the importance of good communication skills when dealing with patients. Elmer’s interview was at times difficult while he was discussing disappointment with himself and how he has treated his body. I also observed the fear in his voice and concerned facial expressions as he discussed concepts of loneliness, financial struggles and listed the various ailments that already affect his quality of life at sixty six years of age. Throughout this process, I found it was imperative that I maintained an understanding, empathetic and realistic outlook on the things he was telling me in order to provide a level of comfort and reassurance for Elmer. At the close of the interview, Elmer commented that after discussing his views on aging with me, he felt a certain obligation to address the concerns about his health and stated that “this conversation makes me sit back and think, when am I going to make changes? Time keeps going on and next week will turn into next week unless I do something now.” I believe that many elderly will be more inclined to be honest with themselves as well as the health care professional. This, in turn, will ideally lead to more moments like the one I experienced at the end Elmer’s interview where a self-awareness and inclination to make positive changes occurred. It would then be up to the families, friends and doctors to provide the proper resources, education and support to help the patient act on the motivation gained from the encounter.
Based on the fact that nurses come from various educational and training programs, I believe that an important systems change that could be implemented into health care facilities is some sort of program that teaches nurses different communication styles and emphasizes the most important aspects of communicating effectively with any individual. Continuing-education is an important aspect of any career that is focused on continued growth and learning. To facilitate this change, I would design a curriculum that focuses on teaching nurses both basic and advanced concepts and techniques to aid in good communication. This curriculum would be taught through a series of mandatory learning sessions for all nurses working in the given facility. As nurses learn new medications and innovative technology, the fundamental basis of nursing—how to communicate effectively—should continually be taught. Effective communication skills can be taught and improved upon with proper training and practice and therefore while evaluating systems in health-care facilities it is important to consider this as a means of helping to improve quality patient care and outcomes. Having worked in a nursing-home as an Licensed Practical NurseI, I witnessed several occasions where effective communication could have had drastically changed the outcomes of situations and therefore believe that this needs to be considered as one focus of systems change. Nurses, as professionals, need to be the ones who understand how to communicate properly and obtain the information we need from patients while also understanding what they require of us. We cannot expect the patient to be the expert in communication.
In summary, this interview with an older adult confirmed my belief that people may have unresolved emotions about the process of aging and what retirement age will be like for them. Many of the concerns that stemmed from Elmer’s comments were focused around nutritional health, a fear of loss of autonomy, loneliness and potential financial hardship. In order to address these concerns and other concerns that older adults have about the process of aging, nurses must be well-trained communicators and have the knowledge and skills to provide insight, educational tools and resources for these individuals in order to facilitate a better transition into retirement and the changes that occur with the aging process. This interview also helped bring to light the importance of taking a reasonably adequate amount of time with each patient in order to, as Elmer put it, care, thus providing him, or her, the opportunity to ask any questions that may arise and to share information that comes to mind as the nurse-patient relationship is being formed. Despite Elmer’s decisions to partake in unhealthy lifestyle habits, he will need support from health-care professionals as he continues to age and the best thing that we can do as nurses is to be educated on how to best support him in happy and fulfilling aging process.

Mock Job Fair Report
Introduction
The Mock Job Fair was designed to give students a job interview experience whether as an interviewer or interviewee. BA444 and BA180 students were responsible for this wonderful event and made it into fruition, with the help of Dr. Colfax and Dr. Diego they were able to guide their students to make the event run smoothly and become successful. BA444 students were responsible for making the companies and organizing the whole event, their companies are comprised of Restaurant, Athletic Training Services, Coffee Shop, Landscape Design Company, and Luxury Fashion Company. BA180 students acted as the applicants, they chose two nonexempt positions for two companies and prepared their respective resumes prior to their job interview. This event was a great experience for everybody which prepared students to have an experience for a real job interview.
Communal Restaurant’s Pre-Interview
Communal Restaurant’s website attracted attention compare to the rest of the companies, it is a friendly user website that has many functions but easy to use. It is easy to navigate on the website when it comes to finding an applicant’s needs such as information about the jobs, menu, application form, and the company’s information (Communal Restaurant “home”). Applicants who are finding information to complete their resume will be able to complete their task effortlessly. Using Communal’s website is very efficient because of their response for individuals who applied. When I applied for the Server position, they were able to respond the next day and gave me information that I needed prior to the job interview. I had plenty of time preparing for my interview because of their efficiency in responding so overall, I think their website helped many of us applicants to complete our tasks
Communal Restaurant’s Interview
Communal’s interview is one of the best out of five companies, they were prepared in terms of showing their companies information to the people in the room and gave their applicants a comfortable environment despite being nervous for most applicants. The Interviewees, Louise and Ana dressed and conducted themselves professionally. Both interviewees did a great job of displaying professionalism as if it was a real job interview. They were also able to utilize their applicant’s resume to construct specific questions that relates to applicants resume whether it would be about their job experiences, skills, and personal information. My experience during Communal Restaurant’s interview was incredible, I really liked my interview for Communal Restaurant because the interviewees were passionate about conducting the interview and they were knowledgeable about my resume. They had a set of questions that I think they made as a class, but they also had questions that relates to Food and Beverage Industry and questions that relates from my experiences.
Communal Restaurant’s Post-Interview
After the interview, the interviewee provided their applicants a feedback that they will respond to the result of the job interview. The interviewees gave everyone a heads up will give each individual evaluation in a few days. Communal offered some food and refreshments for their applicants after the interview which was impressive and were able to showcase their local food and local beverages.
L.I.V.3.’s Pre-Interview
L.I.V.3.’s website is simple and well organized, applicants who used their website were able to find all the information that they needed to complete their resume, job description, as well as the company’s information (L.I.V.3. “join our team”). Using L.I.V.3.’s website to apply for jobs were hassle free for the applicants, their online application was short, and applicants attached their resume at the latter part of the online application. Although their website was extremely helpful and simple to use, the response to their applicant’s application took longer than the usual. They took longer to respond compare to the rest of the companies and by the time they responded, they had some typo issues concerning about the applicants’ position.
When I applied to L.I.V.3., it took a week for them to respond for my applications and they had some typo issues. I asked my colleagues if they had issued about L.I.V.3. and their issues were similar to mine. I understand their hectic routines to organize this mock job interview, so it was not that big of a deal. There is always room for improvement and fixing the issues will make it even better for the next mock job interview.
L.I.V.3.’s Interview
L.I.V.3. interview was great in terms of professionalism. The interviewees, Bryan Ranon and Danielle Sherwin conducted the interview smoothly and made their applicants feel comfortable. They conducted the interview in a fast pace which was impressive but may not be suitable for some applicants. It was quite challenging for some applicants to answer some of their questions because of how quick they are to transition from one question to another. Although they had some interesting question, none of them relates to the applicant’s resume and did not relate to the job that applicants were applying to. My interview time for L.I.V.3. was 10:30am so the interviewees were not seemed nervous and were already comfortable asking questions. I was expecting some sports related questions from this interview, but I did not get one, so I was really surprise.
L.I.V.3.’s Post-Interview
After the interview, the interviewees gave a feedback on each applicant about their evaluation of the interview. They informed each applicant that they will give their evaluation as soon as possible. L.I.V.3. conducted their interview well and challenged their applicants in a face pace interview which made their applicants respond in a short period of time.
Conclusion
In sum, the Mock Job Fair was an incredible opportunity for students to experience a job interview or a job fair environment. Students had a chance to have a vision for the future, in terms of preparing resume, applying for jobs, and getting interviewed. Other students also had the opportunity to make their own company, be an interviewer and organize this whole event. Overall it was a win-win situation for all students as they all benefited from this experience and prepared them for the future.

Slave Narrative Comparison Essay
Did you know that some researchers have charged that the WPA interviewers edited out parts they found unimportant, but were critical to the enslaved person: religion, cruel plantation owners, lynching’s, runaways, punishment and stories about serving in the Union Army. The formerly enslaved were more open and honest when the interviewer recording their stories was African-American. However, WPA only hired a few. In addition, if the interviewer was a white woman, they were apt to be more open than with a white man. The detailed autobiography inspired the abolition of slavery and its author would become one of the 19th century's most prominent African Americans. Frederick Douglass was one of his time's most prominent thinkers, advising leaders and lecturing thousands on a variety of causes, including women's rights and Irish home rule.
When writing his autobiography, the intention of Frederick Douglass was not only to show how slavery degraded slaves, but also to show how the institution of slavery degraded slave masters. Harriet Jacobs' narrative bears rare testimony to the female experience of slavery, emphasizes the threat of sexual exploitation and directly appeals to women. She was well known for enhancing the lives of freed slaves, primarily through her fervent commitment to establishing education and free slave labor opportunities. Before the start of the Civil War, Harriet was actively involved with the abolition movement. She raised money for black refugees. This was her purpose in life. A comparison of the slave narratives of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs reveals similarities and differences in (content, structure, tone, style, audience, purpose, events, etc.)
First, there are similarities and differences in these narratives. One of the similarities is both mentioned the importance of being educated as far as learning how to read and write. Frederick Douglass believed that everyone was created in the same way. But he also believed that we were not only born free: we must become who we are. So he is incredibly important for education and self-improvement. The worst thing about slavery, he believes, is that through education it prevents people from improving themselves. In reality, he argues that things are completely opposite to slavery and training. By reading, he works to become independent by widening his horizons. Of course, he still has to flee physically, but it's his education that gives him the willpower to make it happen. Harriet Jacobs pain became her inspiration and voice for the freed slaves to fight slavery, promote education and civil rights. She fought for academic institutions and got them.
Another common quality is both narratives show abuse at the hands of slaveholders, the risks of trying to escape. In the early chapters of An American Slave, highlight the status of slaves over his individual experience and the nature of slavery. 'I didn't have a bed,' he wrote. '[I’d] sleep on the cold, humid, clay floor with my head in [the corn bag] and my feet out' This shows how Douglass was treated while as a slave. Also in his 1845 narrative, Douglass does not provide the full details of his escape, for he fears that this information will be useful to slave owners seeking to thwart or recapture future runaways. This shows how scared he First, there are similarities and differences in these narratives.
This shows how scared he was of not only his owner but also all slave owners. Harriet was sexually harassed and physically abused when she was a teen for as long as she was a servant in Dr.Flint’s household. This shows what she had to endure while a slave for Flint. Also, most of the time when slaves tried to escape and later were caught, they were whipped, shackled, hanged, pounded, burned, mutilated, branded, raped, and incarcerated as a punishment. In spite of these common aspects, these slave narratives also differ in many ways. One difference is their genders. This may be obvious and it is but it plays a big part in the different ways they were treated. Frederick Douglass was a strong male, so he had to do more labor intensive work unlike Harriet Jacobs.
Also the way they were treated and punished was different because of their genders. Jacobs was punished with sexual harassment and was threatened. Frederick Douglass was caught once for trying to escape and he was sent to jail, but because of his friends, he was able to get out. Another way the narratives differ is that that Jacobs perceives slavery differently than Douglass. Jacobs wants to protect her children from slavery, this is the main reason why she wants things to change. She sees the situation through a mother’s eye unlike Douglass, who had no children at the time. Douglass wanted freedom for all the slaves and not just him or his family. These similarities and differences in the narratives emphasize the unique, yet shared experiences of Douglass and Jacobs.
Further comparison of these two slave narratives also reveals similarities and differences of the emotions they had in their writings. Both writers have hatred of the harsh- treatment slaves had to endure. Douglass and Jacobs were both born into slavery so they had no say in what they wanted to do. Because of this they were bought by terrible families which mad Douglass want to kill himself and made Jacobs have children with another white man just so that her current owner would maybe sell her off. Although the narratives are similar in this way, their points of view also differ. Douglass wrote as a male slave and the brutality, while Jacobs wrote it in a woman point of view and gave us a look at how the women that were slaves experienced life. Jacobs wanted to protect her children because of her motherly instincts but Douglass wanted to run away just so that he could survive. As you can see, a comparison of the emotions and points of view of these narratives includes common and distinctive features.
Another feature of both of these narratives is their style. The style of both narratives is very similar. Both narratives have distinguishing characteristics such as forthright style; vivid characters; and striking dramatic incidents, particularly graphic violence and daring escapes. In addition to these common characteristics, the narratives also differ in the way the narratives were published. Harriet was on the fence about releasing her story, but Douglass released more than one version of his story. This feature highlights the variation in confidence between both authors.
In conclusion, a comparison of the slave narratives of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs shows similarities and differences in style, beliefs, and points of view. Even though both authors had the odds stacked against them, they rose to the top. They both were, and still are influential and still make an impact on today’s society. So even though the WPA might have not put in some crucial parts into the narrative, the book was still successful.

Does Mary Prince’s History Confirm Jacobs’ Comment?
The quote in question appears within Harriet Jacobs’ book, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, the passage it was extracted from embodies her most important influences on the literature of Slavery – her representation of slave women. Jacobs addresses both race and gender issues within her novel, discussing the struggles and sexual abuses of slave women. Her narrative differs to those of narratives written by men, it should be noted that in the time the book was published, slave narratives were written predominantly by men. She does not just discuss the physical abuses and endurance as a slave but also addresses the emotional and phycological struggles she faced as a slave woman and as the quote suggests, believed that they were “far more terrible” than the experiences of a man. There are many similarities between Jacobs’ narrative and The History of Mary Prince.
For example, the inclusion of motherly struggles, the observation of the treatment from not just master’s but also the Mistresses and finally the use of techniques from sentimental novels to emphasise the emotional effects of slave life. However, not all aspects of Prince’s narrative confirm Jacobs’ comment that ‘Slavery was terrible for men; but […] far more terrible for women’. This essay will explore Mary Prince’s narrative and attempt to provide evidence for whether it confirms Jacobs’ comment. Throughout ‘The History of Mary Prince’, there are certainly many parallels that can be drawn between itself and Jacobs’ narrative. They both explore the physical and psychological abuses they and those around them faced as slaves and as women. It seems there are also many instances within Prince’s narrative that do confirm Jacobs’ statement. Not only does Prince describe the horrific punishments she faced herself but some of the most violent and disturbing memoirs from the narrative include the abuses of Miss Hetty by Captain I – and Mrs I-. Hetty was a French slave who was kind to Prince, she even used to refer to her as Aunt. Hetty’s presence was almost motherly in the absence of Princes parents.
Even though Hetty is pregnant, that does not stop the master and mistress flogging her so severely that she was “brought to bed before her time and was delivered after severe labour of a dead child”(Prince 15). Hetty was then continuously beaten until she later died from the impact. This not only supports Jacobs’ comment in the sense that, this is a black slave being beaten not only by her master and her mistress, but a female slave who was pregnant at the time and had to face not just the physical pain of the experience but also the psychological effects of having given birth to a dead child. Another noteworthy point here is that it is unclear to whom Hetty was pregnant by, which may suggest possible sexual abuse. This may explain the mistresses rage directed toward Hetty and the other female slaves. This relates to how Jacobs often writes in her narrative about the ever-present risk of sexual abuse as a female slave which also meant having to deal with the “Jealous Mistress”(Jacobs 32); something that as a male slave you were unlikely to have to face. There is also another instance within the text that alludes to sexual abuse.
Not only is she often stripped naked before being punished but Prince describes Mr D- as having “an ugly fashion of stripping himself quite naked, and ordering [me] then to wash him in a tub of water”(Prince 24). She describes this as being worse than all the licks because of the shame it brought her. It is very likely that there were sexual abuses involved in these instances but regardless the emotional turmoil it caused her either way was enough. It seems within the text that it was far more likely for women to be working within the household of the master and therefore it would have been more likely that women like Prince had to deal with this close contact, emotional abuse from their owners compared to men; who were often out of the house doing manual labour. This again seems to confirm Jacobs’ comment, since female slaves not only had to endure the physical pain but also the mental strains of situations like this one. As Andrea Starr Alonzo states, female slaves were “subjected to the humiliation and pain of sexual exploitation.
Rape, concubinage, and the wrath of jealous mistresses were only a few of the indignities female slave suffered just because they were women,” which female slaves often considered even worse than the whippings(Alonzo 121). Another factor from Prince’s History, to confirm Jacobs’ statement, is the fact that Prince as a woman, not only faced sexual threats by having to work near her owners but she had to endure other emotional effects of the domestic roles she was given in her lifetime; these effects can be seen within the text. When she was first sold by Betsey to Captain I-, Mrs I- says, “You are not come here to stand up in corners and cry, you are come here to work’, She then put a child in my arms, and, tired as I was, I was forced instantly to take up my occupation of a nurse’(Prince 13).
Prince had to live under the same roof as her owners and witness all day and night the atrocities they committed to her fellow slaves, all the while bringing up and nursing their child. As much as we see physical abuses to the male slave, rarely throughout text do we encounter men who have faced these same psychological cruelties. It confirms Jacobs’ statement because these more domestic roles such as nursing and attending to the masters in their chambers may have been more mentally demanding than the tasks a male slave may have faced. For many women they would have had to be a wet nurse for white children, whilst being separated from their own. Wet nursing for example, is a “UNIQUELY GENDERED KIND OF EXPLOITATION, AND under slavery it represented the point at which the exploitation of enslaved women as workers and as reproducers literally intersected”(West and Knight 37).
Despite this, there are many other factors which may discredit the idea that Prince’s History confirms Jacobs’ comments. Within the narrative, Prince describes the harsh beatings of the “two little slave boys in the house”(Prince 14). Prince recalls how neither master or mistress restrained their cruelty notwithstanding the infancy of these two boys. In the same way that Hetty’s pregnancy didn’t prevent them beating her, the fact that these two boys were only children themselves made no difference. Prince said, “not a day passed without these boys receiving the most severe treatment”(Prince 15). Perhaps this proves that whether female or male, young or old, the treatment you received as a slave was equally as brutal. As well as this, there is an instance when we see the emotional struggles of a slave man within the text. Henry, the black driver who takes Mary to the Methodist meeting, confesses to her that he had previously been cruel to other slaves because he was ordered to by his master, “He prayed them all to forgive him, and he prayed that God would forgive him.” And also, that “He said it was a horrid thing for a ranger to have to have sometimes to beat his own wife or sister; but he must do so if ordered to by his master”(Prince 28). This shows that it was not just women who were psychologically affected by their slave experiences and therefore doesn’t confirm Jacobs’ comment.
Prince’s History shows how “slave women had to endure physical labour, just like the men but also were expected to rear, nurse and witness the destruction of their own family units”(Weed 122–33) . It discusses how pregnant slaves were not exempt from punishment, those, like Hetty, expected to work through it. Prince recounts the sexual exploitation from Mr D-, that humiliated her, and says it was worse than all the beatings. And if Jacobs is right, this may have been why her mistress punished her so severely. Prince’s history shows that female slaves were not just the victim of violence but also sexual exploitation and psychological damage. Overall, it does seem, that Prince’s History confirms Jacobs’ comment, however, this is subjective as it is a female slave narrative written by a woman.
Therefore, it will ultimately appear to show more feminine struggles than those of men, purely since she is a woman and experienced slavery through a female perspective. Yet, there are plenty of instances where the hardships of male slaves are related, the abuse of the two young boys and the psychological effect on Henry are just two examples. As well as this, although Prince does often discuss the harrows of mothers being separated from their children, this is not a gendered issue, we see her brothers taken away at a young age never to see them again. Prince often makes a point of not separating gender when she talks about the struggles of being a slave, for example she says at the very end of the text, “There is no modesty or decency shown by the owner to his slaves; men, women and children are exposed alike”(Prince 37). Within Prince’s History, her experience of slavery was not a matter of man versus women and who had it worse, but master versus slave. For this reason, it can be determined that overall Prince’s History does not confirm Jacobs’ comment.

The Complex Identity of Harriet Jacobs’ Autobiography Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl: Written by herself
Harriet Jacobs, an African American slave woman who painstakingly fought to gain her freedom, held reservations against writing and publishing her story. Within the preface she expresses concerns of inadequacy and addresses her audience to ask for understanding regarding the background of her circumstances. Her fear stems from the prejudice she personally faced as an African American, a slave, and a woman. The combination of the three categories of identification is complex in each respect, however Jacobs skillfully articulates her story in a way that can be universally understood. Through an examination of Jacobs’ style of writing, the time period in which she lived, and how she projects and proclaims her identity, a better understanding of why she composed her autobiography the way she did can be attained. It is through Jacobs’ autobiography that she asserts her freedom even further by declaring the identity and humanity she was denied during her time as a slave.
Harriet Jacobs was born in Edenton, North Carolina in about 1813. She was born into slavery and lost her parents at a young age, so she was as closely attached to her maternal grandmother as she could be in her circumstances. Regarding her childhood, she records that she “was born a slave; but I never knew it till six years of happy childhood had passed away” (Jacobs 889). She was fortunate to have a kind mistress who treated her well in her younger years. When her first mistress passed away, rather than grant her freedom, Jacobs was willed to another family member. Her new master and mistress were not quite so kind, and she suffered constant sexual harassment from an evil man who wished to corrupt her and assert his dominance. Deciding to take her life into her own hands, she starts a relationship with an unmarried white man, who sympathizes with her, impregnates her, and promises to grant her children freedom. After having her children, she makes another bold decision to run away from her master. She hides in her grandmother’s attic for seven years until she can finally be transported to the North. Just when she believes herself to be safe, the fear of re-capture by the Fugitive Slave law threatens her peace. Due to the kindness of a white woman abolitionist sympathizer, her freedom is bought at last. Her life and story of perseverance undoubtedly leaves a strong impression of who she was, what she believed, and the depth of her willpower by how she overcame her obstacles.
Jacobs’ story is unique in a couple of different ways. Firstly, because it was so well written some believed that she didn’t actually write it herself. For the time she lived in, it was common for white authors to write slave narratives, like Harriet Beecher Stowe for example. It wasn’t until an article published by Jean Fagan Yellin in 1981 called “Written By Herself: Harriet Jacobs’ Slave Narrative” that the legitimacy of Jacobs’ authorship was resolved. Yellin utilizes her letters corresponding with her Quaker abolitionist friend, Amy Post, in order to prove Jacobs did in fact write her own autobiography, and it is not a fictionally based account like that of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, despite a few thematic similarities. Yellin claims, “The appearance of Jacobs' letters has made it possible to trace her life” (Yellin 480) and provides many excerpts from letters written by Jacobs, her associates, and friends in order to document the timeline and details of the creation of her autobiography. One interesting fact presented by Yellin is that initially Jacobs was in correspondence with Harriet Beecher Stowe to request that she write her autobiography as a narrative. Feeling a hopeful sense of camaraderie, Jacobs even asked if Stowe would take her daughter Louisa on a trip with her to England as a “representative southern slave” (482).
The endeavor, however, did not end well as Stowe denied Jacobs’ wish to take her daughter, fearing, in her words, “that if . . . [Louisa's] situation as a slave should be known, it would subject her to much petting and patronizing, which would be more pleasing to a young girl than useful; and the English were very apt to do it, and . . . [Mrs. Stowe] was very much opposed to it with this class of people . . .” (482). She also dared to question the validity of Jacobs’ story and proposed that it be used in her novel that she was working on, The Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Deeply insulting Jacobs, she is described as feeling “ . . . denigrated as a mother, betrayed as a woman, and threatened as a writer by Stowe's actions” (482). Stowe’s attitude towards Harriet Jacobs and her “class of people” shows the depth of intolerance and prejudice that she encountered and, subsequently as an author, had to surmount. Yet, had it not been for her experience with Stowe, her decision to write her autobiography herself may not have been as strongly solidified.
In spite of the validity of Jacobs’ authorship being proven, the interpretation of her text has undergone conflicting speculation and criticism as well. Literary critic, Carolyn Sorisio, comments on the issue within her article “‘There is Might in Each’: Conceptions of Self in Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Written by Herself”. She identifies two common assumptions made by critics, the first: “To some, her document stands as the historical record of an individual slave woman, evidencing a unified ‘self’ who recorded her life for future generations” (Sorisio 1). She clarifies that this reading follows the typical outline and ideas of a slave narrative, proving humanity and identity based off of literacy and intellectual competency. The other view indicates, “By contrast, some critics read Jacobs’s work as a textual presentation designed to gratify the aesthetic and ideological expectations of white Northern Christian women. Rather than finding Jacobs in the text, they see a reflection only of bourgeois values” (2). Sorisio warns against extreme interpretation in this light because it errs by the implication of fiction over fact and questions the authority and authenticity of Harriet Jacobs’ autobiography. Critics could potentially read Jacobs in this manner because of her writing style, purposefully addressing the audience and therefore showing that she is aware of how they may perceive what she is telling them.
Even though there is conjecture behind Jacobs’s true intentions for her novel, she clearly states her purpose for writing her story within her preface. She writes:
I have not written my experiences in order to attract attention to myself; on the contrary, it would have been more pleasant to me to have been silent about my own history. Neither do I care to excite sympathy for my own sufferings. But I do earnestly desire to arouse the women of the North to a realizing sense of the condition of two millions of women at the South, still in bondage, suffering what I suffered, and most of them far worse. (Jacobs 887)
She expresses her true desire is to reach the hearts of white women in the North and evoke feelings of sympathy for those who are enslaved. Her goal is to make them feel strongly enough to, hopefully, move them to action and inspire change. Her cause is a noble one, yet she evinces both humility and shame for the act of writing down her history, revealing that she isn’t proud of some of her decisions and the situations she was placed in. The fact that she understands her audience and places importance on their comprehension emphasizes her advanced mastery of literary persuasion and application of elements of argumentation, ethos, pathos, and logos. Jacobs’ writing style proves that she recognized the need for balance between including enough shocking details to evoke sympathy and provide the reality of slavery, but not too much so as to disturb and horrify the reader enough to simply turn away. While this style of writing may be seen as manipulative, it is more suggestive of Jacobs’ concern for telling the truth well enough for it to actually be heard.
As an African American slave, Jacobs suffered much abuse and prejudice. It could be further argued that as an African American slave and female author she suffered on another level. Author of critical article “Black Womanhood in Nineteenth-Century America: Subversion and Self-Construction in Two Women's Autobiographies”, Beth Maclay Doriani depicts this struggle, claiming that African American women authors such as Jacobs created a subcategory of the slave narrative. Although those who were enslaved typically encountered similar hardships, Doriani proposes that certain components distinguish a difference between male slave narrative and female slave narrative. For example, she explains a few of the dominant characteristics of male slave narratives, using Frederick Douglas’ account as an example. She applies words such as “self- initiating, self-propelling, and self-sustaining” (Doriani 203) to describe the way male slaves would illustrate their retaliation against opposition.
Doriani aptly points out that Douglas demonstrates “self-reliance” as a defining factor of the male slave’s “manhood” in “his description of freedom in terms of the acquisition of literacy and the physical mastery over the slaveholder or oversee” (203). Essentially, he earned his freedom by becoming literate and physically domineering his “overseer”. The latter of these conventions was certainly not available to the slave woman, because though they were enslaved, they were still held to the established standard of “womanhood”. Yet, the concept of maintaining womanhood was a difficult one when the terms dictated by society was simultaneously applicable and non-applicable to an enslaved woman.
The ideal woman of the period was defined as “pious, pure, submissive, and domestic” (Doriani 204). In order to be considered a proper lady, it was essential to possess and exemplify these characteristics. Most women, regardless of race, aspired to achieve this ideal, but a conflict of interest exists for white slaveholding women. Doriani clarifies that “Women, to be ladies, had to have servants, according to the white southern ideal—thus slave women could never hope to reach the ideal” (206). Therefore, in order for slaveholding women to preserve their status, they had to deprive their slaves of their own womanhood and deny them the potential of ever reaching it. The nature of slavery not only refused women of their basic rights and appropriate treatment, but also, as Jacobs exemplifies within her novel, the natural possession of innate womanhood and consequently humanity and identity. Jacobs elaborates upon her experience with her “jealous mistress” (901), telling the audience that the unfaithfulness of the master of the house instigates a worse punishment for favored female slaves at the hand of the vengeful mistress.
According to Jacobs, the female slave “is not allowed to have any pride of character. It is deemed a crime in her to wish to be virtuous” (901-902). The slave girl alone takes full blame and is condemned as impure rather than the master for his participation, and probable initiation, of infidelity. In the realm of a proper woman, it isn’t her or her husband’s fault if he is unfaithful, so it has to be the slave’s fault. Jacobs’ firm statement that it is a “crime in her to wish to be virtuous” absolves any discrepancy within the master and mistress’ marriage by displacing the issue onto a “scapegoat”. If a slave were considered virtuous or blameless, then the nature of the true guilty party would be revealed.
Since the personal characteristics of slaves couldn’t synchronize with the typical characteristics of womanhood, they needed to find some form of self-definition. Franny Nudelman, literary critic and author of scholarly article “Harriet Jacobs and the Sentimental Politics of Female Suffering” explicates Jacobs’ manner of self-definition by observing her actions and priorities. She denotes,
Recounting her decision to engage in an illicit sexual relationship in order to escape the abuse of her master, Jacobs asserts liberty and autonomy as alternative values for slave women, priorities that supersede chastity and submissiveness. By narrating her experiences in the context of sexual and domestic ideologies that discount or condemn them, Jacobs manages to articulate the limitations of those standards, thus redefining black womanhood and devising alternative narrative structures for describing black female experience. (Nudelman 940)
Instead of being a victim of circumstance and being submissive, Jacobs made a very difficult and mature choice at quite a young age. She was consistently pursued and harassed by her master, and he concocted many devious schemes to ensnare her. When faced with a situation that would ensure her destruction of womanly virtue, she made the choice to give herself to another man because “It seems less degrading to give one’s self, than to submit to compulsion” (Jacobs 916). She temporarily gains control and freedom with the choice to be with this white, unmarried man. The fact that he is unmarried proves as an element of justification for Jacobs, because she would have felt far worse if he had been married, or she wouldn’t have had any other option but to accept her demise. Once again she addresses the reader and asks for understanding considering the difficult position she was placed in, “Pity me, and pardon me, O virtuous reader! You never knew what it is to be a slave; to be entirely unprotected by law or custom; to have the laws reduce you the condition of a chattel, entirely subject to the will of another” (917). She implores the audience to imagine themselves in her place and contemplate that issues of morality within slavery weren’t always easy to judge. She admits to knowing what she did was morally wrong, but it was a necessary choice the she made out of self-preservation from greater evil. Besides, the opportunity for a slave to make a decision for himself or herself was something that didn’t come up often, if at all.

What Went Wrong in Independent Africa?
After winning independence, African leaders then had to show concrete results towards progress. Various problems affected development including, one-party systems, personality cults, governmental overthrows, civil wars, refugees, centralized economies, crippling debt, political corruption, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Once the transfer of power from colonial to African government was complete, African leaders had to build unified nations out of the numerous ethnic groups which fell within their nation-state borders. They hashed out new constitutions with colonial powers, then failed to include their citizens in the nation-building process following independence.
New political leaders made many assumptions after taking power: Political leaders knew everything and did not need to confer with their people about decisions that affected them Their citizens had the same social and political because they had all suffered under colonial rule Leaders also believed that their citizens needed a strong central government to create national unity, so they created single-party systems, with strict limits on political freedoms, stifling democracy from the get-go and making certain their power was never challenged. Personality cults were formed around political leaders. Personality cults attempt to fabricate the image of an all-knowing and all-powerful leader. Self-conferred titles such as “Redeemer”, and “Doctor of Revolutionary Sciences” were meant to convey that the bearers of the names were above the law and to be obeyed without question. Personality cult or not, these leaders often lacked vision, and leaders without vision have no idea how to unify their citizens, much less plan for the future of their countries. Africa has experienced more government overthrows by military than any other continent.
More than half of its countries have had at least one military regime since independence, and many have seen or continue to suffer from civil war. In Nigeria, there was a military coup in 1966 when the Ibo army killed a prime minister from the north, which led to the slaughter of Ibo people. The Ibo people decided to secede from Nigeria to create their own state the Republic of Biafra in 1967 setting off a civil war that lasted until 1970. During the war, somewhere near 2 million Ibo lives were lost. In Sudan, ethnic tensions and civil war between the Muslim dominated north, and Christian majority south continues to be a problem with estimates of the dead around half a million, and 300,000 rendered homeless. In Mozambique and Angola, more Africans have lost their lives in civil war since independence than they did in their struggles for independence.
Civil war takes a heavy toll on economies, and war-torn countries which used to be food secure, are reduced to waiting for handouts from the international community to feed their people. In Zaire, dictator General Mobutu Sese Seko was toppled and proceeded by Laurent-Desire Kabila who then gave the country a new name, Democratic Republic of Congo. Wars from neighboring countries spilled across the borders of DR of Congo, with governments in Rwanda, Uganda, Angola, and Zimbabwe picking sides and escalating the civil war in the Congo.
Wars across national boundaries have happened in several countries including Somalia, Ethiopia, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, and Chad. Millions of lives have been lost in the various African civil wars, resulting in further fragmentation, economic devastation and millions of refugees fleeing their home countries. Refugee populations worldwide are ? African and up to ½ African if refugees who haven’t fled their countries are counted as well. Under centralized governments, many leaders created parastatal agencies, government corporations, to handle production and marketing of cash crops. Parastatal agencies outwardly appeared to have been created to enhance the national treasury on behalf of its people, but such agencies were rife with corruption and inefficiencies.
Government corporations severely weakened national economies and multiplied the effect of other economic issues such as civil war, unfavorable commodity prices, and increased cost of imports. African countries relied heavily on foreign aid and loans to try and stay afloat, sending their national debts soaring to as much as 87% of their GNP. Corruption is widespread in Africa, and is heavily linked to poverty as those who live in poverty are much more likely to break the rules to survive. With no balance between meritocracy and family/ethnic loyalty in government, corruption continues to be a cyclical problem in which new generations of leaders repeat what their predecessors did.
A strong leader with a plan can facilitate discussions between adversarial ethnic groups and create rules which prevent corruption and promote meritocracy. Sub-Saharan Africans account for approximately 67% of the people worldwide living with HIV. Globally, 90% of the children living with HIV are African children. There are numerous causes which have contributed to the African AIDS epidemic including, poverty, lack of education, poor planning, abstinence-only education (conditions attached to US aid), and certain cultural practices.
The HIV/AIDS pandemic has severely limited the social and economic development of the sub-Saharan region. Despite all the ills that followed independence, many African nations have seen impressive gains. Economic centralization and government by force have given way to democracy and free markets. Communication, transport, health and education infrastructure has seen tremendous growth. And despite the increasing number of those affected by famine and poverty, more and more Africans are seeing improvements in their material lives.

Declaration of Independence Gulliver’s Travels
In his novel, Gulliver’s Travels, Jonathan Swift expertly satirizes conflicts of the western world by creating a war between the fictional, tiny nations of Lilliput and Blefuscu. Though the war is violent and deathly, the conflict arose from a ludicrous disagreement: the citizens of Lilliput believe an egg should be broken from the small end, while Blefuscudians believes it should be broken from the larger end.
This warfare is a pertinent satire because it pokes fun not only at the wars and conflicts of Swift's day, but at the conflicts of our present day. Though wars might seem to be based on reasonable cause, Swift’s writing argues that they're ultimately as useless and nonsensical as the egg debate. Today, nations seem to always fight for petty things like money or even the intangible- like power.
In the book, even the size of the people hints to the fact that tiny disputes can be blown way out of proportion. To Lemuel, their feud is insignificant and almost comical because of their miniscule size (at least until he gets wrapped up in it). Therefore, through this witty depiction of war, Swift implies that Western conflicts are petty, pointless, and unnecessary.
However, upon arrival of the floating island Laputa, Swift’s ideals seem to shift. Swift may not advocate war but he clearly sympathizes with people fighting for independence from colonization. In Laputa, the king has three ways of dealing with rebels. He either cuts off their resources, pelts them with great stones, or lets his island drop directly on top of them (which has never been done). Since dropping the island to the earth would devastate both peoples, perhaps Swift is suggesting that in an effort to suppress rebellion in their colonies, the oppressive nations will also destroy themselves.
In Swift’s day, this referenced the Irish rebellion in Dublin which was successful, as was the fictional Lindalino. They got what they wanted and declared that if given the chance, they would kill the Laputan king and completely rewrite the government. It seems like Swift agreed with these radical ideas. Swift was truly a genius for satirizing colonialists like this, especially England. Little did he know that America, Ireland, Canada, China, and many more would all gain their independence from British rule through war within the next two centuries.
Within my satirical editorial, I covered different aspects of foreign relations, but still discussed Swift’s two sides of war and referenced these newly-independent nations. I chose to write an editorial because I thought using each country as a character would best show the dysfunctional relationships between each, which is very straightforward and not as clever as Swift’s metaphors.
I slightly touched on America and China fighting over money, power, or innovation as “the bigger slice of cake”. Although they have not actually gone to war over this is real life, it’s only a matter of time before they fight about these seemingly trivial things. I also lightly tease about America’s shopping addiction, which I mean as her acquiring new lands through colonization. I refer to her colonies as her “adopted” kids and when she later talks about her new acquisitions, she can’t even remember their names. Of course no parent would really forget their children’s names, but that goes to show how little America cares about its colonies as long as she get to assert her power.
In walks Britain and his friends, which form the UK. Britain is a bully who likes to tell everyone what to do, which is true in the sense that the British empire has had power almost everywhere at some point in history. Specifically, I wrote about how southern Ireland gained its independence from England by “forming his own club” and how Hong Kong was liberated as China is referred to as Britain’s “ex-best-friend”.
The American Revolution is America breaking up with Britain “over text”, meaning the Declaration of Independence. I also stated that Britain “never really got over it”. What I mean is that the world was turned upside-down when America became independent, because it was the first nation to do so, just as Lindalino was in Laputa. By trying to suppress the American rebels, Britain actually damaged itself forever- just as Swift predicted. After seeing America’s success, all other nations knew that they could win their independence the same way. In the end it doesn’t matter how big your army or how violent your tactics, because, according to Jonathan Swift, the evil deed of colonization is always going to bite you in the butt.

On the off chance that you need to eat hamburger while attempting to get more fit, ensure that you pick lean meat. Lean meat is delegated having 4 grams (or less) of fat per 100 grams. On the off chance that your favored cut has a great deal of outer fat spread, at that point trim off the abundance before cooking.
Serving Size

Independence ASPCA no Kill Shelter
There are many animals in need of homes and our assistance by bringing animals off the street and the ASPCA in Independence Mo appreciates all the help they receive. They reassure that all the donations go straight to the animals.
While the ASPCA does a lot, to ensure the wellbeing for animals and gathers donations to make sure they are well cared for. Also valuing the life of animals.
American society is for the avoidance of inhumanity to all living things. The ASPCA lends a hand to animals in desperate need. The ASPCA wants everyone that is interested in adopting a pet to know everything that there is to need to know about animals. In addition, animals who are confined to the kennels for an extended period of time will become stir crazy just like us if we were to stay in the house constantly, with no contact with anyone and suffer emotionally. More than just toys these are the little things that does matter but there are more important things that these animals want and need from our community. Of course, money is always essential for the shelter to continue to operate, but there are so many ways to help out and give assistance. In a result of being there for them it prevents them from being lonely and aggressive towards people.
No matter the situation the ASPCA is always there to support the animals. The ASPCA mostly relies on the community to help bring in animals off the street to give them a safe haven and they except donations to help care for the animals. They need a large amount of donations to properly care for animals to meet their necessities. They’re so many supplies that the animals need, such as food, toys, and medical supplies. When the community works together for a common situation, we are doing a few things as saving lives and heighten our society. We’re also getting animals off the street and reducing homelessness.
Pets can’t defend for themselves that’s why ASPCA has different options in many ways to help the animals. A little goes a long way especially when the community comes together. There are so many unwanted animals that are homeless and have no shelter, food or security of a companion. People purchase or get them as a gift, but then realize that they are to much work or that the animal costs to much or even if the animal has behavior problems and the owner decides to give the pet away or in most cases dump the pet on the side of the road. These animals are at risk of major health issues and risk of starvation and even result in death.
The ASPCA has many resources to help the animals if there aren’t any other options for them. Animals have a right to the care they need because animals have rights just like us because they have feelings, hearts, and emotions. When the animals get hurt, they need medical attention. They also need and deserve food to survive, and shelter for inclement weather. We need to get them off the street also because of the animals can get hit by a vehicle or get a disease that can be life threatening. ASPCA encourages people to do research on animals so that you choose the best animal to fit in your home. They also want to make sure you are ready for a new companion and to make sure you understand the needs of animals because, each animal may have a specific need that requires frequent visits to the veterinarian which will result in spending a substantial amount of money to give the pet it’s medication, or something major as repeated surgeries They just want to make sure that your knowledgeable and you know what you’re getting into.
The ASPCA is a “nonprofit organization and is a no kill shelter”. No more euthanizing animals, the ASPCA wants to minimize the euthanizing as much as possible. Even though, there are “approximately 1.5 million sheltered animals are euthanized”. The ASPCA reports that the numbers “have declined” through the years. “Of the sheltered animals are adopted yearly into loving homes”. They expect the numbers to continue the increase of animals finding homes. The ASPCA also gives people a chance to adopt animals and providing inexpensive assistance for the care of animals. The animal shelter wants to reduce the euthanizing as much as possible and they’re able to do that with our help. They continuously help with training constantly to ensure that the pet is trained and that the owner or the adoptee continue to care for the pet without having any problems.
ASPCA animal shelter welcomes contributions to help support the animals. And helps with temporary placements in homes. Because they only have so much room in their shelters then they reach their limit of capacity. While the ASPCA pays for the food, supplies, medical bills, and even training the animals, they need while they reside in adoptive homes. Although, the ASPCA seems to stretch their money to provide the care for animals. With the help of the community it makes it even more possible to continuing the care and necessities of the animals. There are so many ways to help support the animals, we just must try to make an effort and need to be willing to help out if at all possible. The community can also donate food and any supplies to help with the animal’s care. Afterwards with all the donations the ASPCA can bring more homeless animals into a suitable environment.
The ASPCA in Independence works extremely hard to help and provide for the animals as much as they can, but they can only do so much on their own. Too many animals are in need of loving homes. If someone doesn’t think they can care for the animal the person needs to be honest and choose an animal that they think would be a good fit into the home. The ASPCA has a lot of information that people can obtain from the shelter. Furthermore, animals can even help owners with anxiety and depression. So therefore, they can return the favor in some ways.
In conclusion, the more people that comes together the less animals that are on the street. With all the abuse of animals going on the ASPCA gives their all to defend and look after animals that desperately need the help of the community. With encouragement, experience, and connections to help animals.

History and Facts about Hamburgers
Craving fast food? Well, there’s nothing more appetizing than a juicy, cheesy hamburger to calm the rumbling in your stomach. Hamburgers have carved a special place in everyone’s hearts irrespective of their age. Teenagers and young adults were mesmerized by this delicacy-turned-fast food when they saw the carefree “Jughead” from Riverdale gorging on a plate full of hamburgers at Pop Tate’s. Though most of us wish for the tremendous appetite that Jughead has, which is nearly impossible to have, you can firmly assert that your love for hamburgers transcends everything just like it does for the famous comic character.
In a bid to commemorate everyone’s favorite fast food, the hamburger, people celebrate the National Hamburger Day on 28th May, every year. This is the day where you pay homage to the one food that has helped you narrowly escape hunger when you were persistent on playing “Home Alone” and forgot that your culinary skills aren’t up to the mark. All hail the mighty hamburger that underwent a series of changes and endeared itself to billions of people worldwide. One of the most popular variants of the hamburger is the cheese hamburger and Matthew McConaughey rightly said that “The man who invented the hamburger was smart; the man who invented the cheeseburger was a genius.” So, if you are interested in tracing the origins of your beloved hamburger, well, you are in for a “treat.”
The origin of hamburgers
Your delicious fast food has come a long way; it is believed that it began its journey from Egypt! Later, it traveled with the Genghis Khan’s Mongol Army and went around in Russia, and finally, it arrived in the country with the German immigrants. Phew! Now you would definitely look at the hamburger on your plate in a completely different light; it has such as rich and fascinating history to it.
Irrespective of all the claims made about the origin of the hamburger, people are still skeptical to believe which theory is the real one. It is believed that the modern-day hamburger was a dish in the ancient Egyptian cookbooks; it was prepared with ground meat and made into patties and garnished with spices. Later, the Mongolian army under Genghis Khan was believed to have relished these hamburgers. When this Mongolian army reached Russia, the hamburger transformed itself into the Steak Tartare, which is a delicacy made of raw beef. In the 16th century, the hamburger entered Germany via trade routes and reached the port of Hamburg in Germany. Thus, the name “hamburger.” The German immigrants introduced the hamburger to the U.S. citizens in the 18th and 19th century, and thus, began the journey of the American hamburger.

Integrated Marketing Communication Strategy
We will design an integrated marketing communication strategy and for them we will choose the marketing communication to sell our new hamburger. We want our target audience to know that our products are organic and our new hamburger is made with fresh products. We will make a promotion to market our product.
We will make an impact advertising campaign, we will place our advertising in all bus stops, in the subway, on the road fences, we will promote it on radios, smart networks, on our website.
We will train our customer service to be ready for our campaign. We will make an event in stores to promote our product and we will sponsor a TV presenter who is the leader in audience. We will design targeted packaging for people between 14 and 27 years of age and promote sales at all McDonalds stores.
We opted to invest in Faceebok and Instagram as it is an ideal market for our target audience. In this way our message will reach the maximum number of people possible between 14 and 27 years. We also think that this means of communication fits perfectly with our brand.
In our strategy we will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of our product. What is the cost of our launch. How many people we can reach within our target audience. What our client wants ....
We will decide the vehicles that we are going to use to sell our hamburger. One of our communication options is to make pamphlets and distribute them on the street and another could be an email. Marketing communication options can direct the choice of media.
- We will place aerial air advertising in stores.
- Billboards and posters at points of sale
- Internet, social networks and web
- Email marketing
- SMS
- Journals
- Radio
- Sales promotion, training to our staff
- TV
- Sponsorship
We will design a marketing communication strategy and determine the characteristics of the media. We will choose the media based on their characteristics and choose the one that best identifies our objective.
In order to choose the right medium, we will study the level of audience participation, the level of audience receptivity, movement effects, proximity to purchase, sound effects, visual effects. We have to see if the target audience responds actively or if the target audience responds passively and in that case we are not interested.
For example, we will choose the medium of television because our intention is to massively reach our target audience. We will announce our new hamburger on the television shows that our target audience sees. The announcement will include a presenter who is an audience leader challenging the audience to participate by commenting on social networks to gain more impact on other media.
We will hold a meeting to analyze media consumption habits for the primary and complementary marketing media of our target audience, people between 14 and 27 years of age. We will make sure that television channels, magazines, online channels regularly watch our target audience and we will focus our campaigns on them. They can also be influenced by the person's capacity, technological developments, cultural influences, social status, we will adapt to them as much as possible.
The primary means are very important. As in our case Facebook and Instagram. Our objective profile is there. Complementary marketing media suggest media that are additional and improve primary media.
In our analysis we are already clear who the objective will be, people between 14 and 27 years of age. They consume marketing media such as Facebook and Instagram. We will also publish our new release with a campagne super attractive to them and designed for them in stores. We will complement with a radio campagne that consume people between 14 and 27 years. Not forgetting our online store with discounts and promotions. We will also take advantage of the current market trend regarding the purchase of organic products and ensure that our target audience knows our organic ingredients in our new hamburger.
We will choose the media that are related to the caracater our McDonalds brand. McDonalds will have its own medium style and will be particular to its brand. A different and unique style for its launch of the new hamburger. We will execute the media shockingly so we see it.
Our new hamburger comes with an added character that the rest of the competition's hamburgers do not have. All ingredients are organic and brings a lot of quality to the product. You direct our product to fresh people. Media styles will help us inform our target audience.
I relate the style of our McDonalds Brand to the style of Facebook and Instagram because they are two profiles that are consistent with our brand and therefore also to our target audience.
We will plan very well how we want to show our hamburger to our public and the way we offer it will be important. We will use a differentiating style compared to other brands, a style focused on the ages between 14 and 27 years of age. For example on Facebook we will launch the bell of our new hamburger informing them that they will have a hamburger the first 10 customers that arrive at the store the same day of the launch of our new hamburger, our bell will be instantaneous just like Facebook. Let's be prepared for the crowds that can come to the stores.
- We will observe the means used by Burger King and how it works for them.
- Our target audience usually uses Facebook so we are sure it will work.
- We will record a very visual video that attracts the attention of our target audience.
- We will compare the advantages and disadvantages of selecting multiple media in a media plan.
- We will use various types of media to market our product. television, radio, social networks, posters in stores, fences on the roads, bus advertising and email marketing.
An advantage of using several media is because we will have more possibilities to reach our target audience. A disadvantage of using several means could be a higher cost. We have decided to face the disadvantage that we could have when using various means in our plan because we have benefits from the previous campaign, therefore we are going to invest this money. We have investigations of previous campaigns that encourage us to make this decision.
We will develop and apply criteria to select multiple combinations of media. We will design a marketing communication strategy. We will select several media combinations and then decide which is our best option. We believe that using various means will fulfill the purpose of the marketing communication plan and we will sell all the burgers we have planned based on past marketing communications. We will monitor all the information for future actions, how much scope we have obtained, how many sales, how much cost.

The Review of Wendy’s
Risk Profile of Argentina and Geographic Behaviour
As per the data retrieved from worldbank.com , which shows the GDP per capita growth for Argentina in the year of 1961 was 3.729 which increases in consequent years and has grown to 8.897 in 1965 which was the highest in number till 2018 where it’s in negative figure (-3.5) . The GDP per capita growth always keep on fluctuating across the period of 1960-2018 which shows the purchasing power of the economy, inflation and consumption needs all have been affected.
Being 8th largest in terms of area and 28th in terms of GDP across world, Argentina is rich with its natural resources and diversified industrial base whereas Argentina’s economy is middle-income economy in South America behind Brazil and is also famous for its export oriented agricultural sector. Argentina has diversified inhabitant across the country mainly Italian, Spanish and French, it’s second country in the world with the most immigrants with 6.6 million, only second to the United States with 27 million, and ahead of other immigratory receptor countries such as Canada, Brazil, Australia, etc nevertheless, the country's vast area, and its cultural diversity, have led to a local cuisine of various dishes and consumption of beef has tremendously waved in recent past, no other dish matches the consumption of beef across nation.
Modes of Entry in Argentina Market
Wholly owned subsidiary or Franchising , where both the ways the business opportunities are favourable to the investor as after 1990, Argentinian Government has allowed the FDI and has opt out the regulations which restrict the investors to repatriate the funds and income earned domestically whereas in respect to that the government has off loaded and allowed the repatriation of funds, tax free , and full amount of their capital funds back to the parent or homeland of the company which brings most favourable conditions to boost the economy with Foreign Direct Investment.
For wholly owned subsidiary the corporate tax stands equal to the domestic firms as 33% and stands similar to all economic sectors, whereas for Franchising before 1990 the concept was not so famous among domestic and foreign investors whereas the same has grown fanatically to 620 million after that period around 1994.
Wendy’s Marketization in US
Wendy's is a chain of fast food restaurants founded on 15th November 1969 and its headquarter is based in Dublin, Ohio and owned by the American corporation Wendy's International, Inc. There are over 6,711 Wendy's restaurants worldwide including 353 that are company-owned. 6,358 restaurants are franchised, and 92% of the system-wide restaurants are located in North America. The chain is currently world’s third largest Hamburgers fast food chain after Burger King and Macdonald’s. Also, it is known for its Frosty dairy desserts, the fact that their burgers are square and made from fresh (as opposed to frozen) ground beef, and its making of all sandwich items to order.
Wendy’s in Argentina
Wendy’s wants to expand their global presence to many countries and try to achieve the same fortune as MacDonald’s and Burger King with their prime agenda to reach out to consumers of hamburgers prepared freshly and on demand as they did in US market and achieve success. With the same approach they enter into the market of Argentina with an expectation of success and building their brand name among the local and international market players of fast food.
Whereas Wendy’s reach to the Argentina Market in 1995, near the close of 1997, Wendy's had only 11 outlets operating in Argentina. None of these 11 restaurants were franchise operations. Rather, all were company owned and operated acquired from its joint venture partner with Argentinean fast-food chain Pumper Nic. In 1997, Wendy's presence in Argentina in terms of the number of restaurants operating, as well as in terms of the company's relative position in the Argentinean market with respect to McDonald's, was unsatisfactory from Wendy's perspective. At later stage Wendy’s has reached out to a total number of 18 outlets which they all shut down in the subsequent year 2000 during which they suffer approximately 3.2million loss and immediately they laid off 800 employees with the desired and regulated compensation as per the laws of union. There were few factors which brings them to this end among which the crisis in Argentina was the most important factor supported by the low consumer demand and low purchasing power
Few other factors were also to be considered for the closing of Wendy’s in Argentina market were- (drop in sales)-the losses they faced were very large and (low turnover) the turnover of each store was very low (High cost of hamburger with the competitive players) they set prices much higher than those in the market and (Wrong location of business setup) probably they did not choose the location of their premises well to add to that there were some Management problems as well.
Although Wendy’s tried to run the business on franchise basis as well but that was an expensive programme they accepted as they have to pay a non-refundable 5000$ and 30,000$ for technical assistance to the applicant whereas applicant does not become an owner an entitled the applicant to commence a training programme intended to allow both the parties opportunity to asses long term relationships. Once all these requirements met the franchisee could purchase the franchise for 350,000$. In addition to that franchisee has to supply the kitchen equipment which costs them around $ 400,000. These were few conditions and investment to become a franchisee for Wendy’s in Argentina.
Keeping other risk factors and government policies in favour of FDI and international firms to start their business in Argentina using the same tax norms and repatriation of capital and earnings, what would be the number of franchised restaurants and in which locations should them to be?
As per the current data, the population ratio between US and Argentina is 7.26 whereas in the year of 1995 the ratio was almost similar to 7.67 whereas the number of restaurant in present Wendy’s have in US is approximate 610,000 outlets and number of franchised quick service restaurant established in US is 194,723. If we compare the usage of hamburger in US and Argentina its one third which gives a nominal figure of number of restaurant could be open in Argentina. So, as per the general calculation Wendy’s could have open 7500 franchised quick service restaurant across Argentina by now considering the population growth and hamburger eaters.
Whereas to define that we can consider the pre-defined formula to calculate and estimate how many outlets could Wendy’s operate in Argentina which is as-
Number of Customer Needed
As per the survey organised by National Statista 20% of US population reach out to quick service restaurant.
CNRadjusted = 65.4million*(32.7/1.5)
CNRarg = 125,753 number of customers required to operate restaurant in Argentina.
Taking 1/3rd population of Argentina into consideration who favour to eat hamburgers then as per the formula to calculate the total number of outlets to be opened in Argentina comes around 286 outlets which can target the 80% population of Argentina which includes Middle age and youth, where as we have also considered the per capita income of US i.e $60,200 PPP and Argentina as $20,700 PPP with the average consumption of hamburgers and income spent by every US and Argentine to be as 10% of their annual income.
Greater Bueno Aires being the capital and most urban, cosmopolitican and populated city becomes the centre of attraction for any investor to begin any business and as an international brand to reach out to the local and become favourite to their environment it is the best location to open multiple chain of outlet and to provide franchise to the locals alongside Santa Fe, Cordoba and Mendoza comes next to the list to expand the chain and reach out to the local with their advertisement to boost up the sales while keeping the price in mind to be competitive to the local market players.
In Argentina unlike US there are less number of Malls and more of individual units or point of sale which general public prefer to reach out to, so Wendy’s must take this concept into consideration when opening an outlet or giving franchise and should look area where the population is at least 50,000-60,000 where 20% should be the target audience who should reach out to the outlet.
While the labour cost is less in Argentina than USA due to the minimum wages i.e. $3.25 as well as Argentina is 2nd most efficient market in South America basis per capita income and spending’s. Keeping the management into tight control and not downgrading the quality of hamburger will be key areas to grab the market. Wendy’s need to make sure that outlets should be driven with the same values and customer service as in US.

Huckleberry Finn and Grammar
Should Huckleberry Finn stay in schools? If so, should it be moved to a higher level? Huck Finn is 13 year old boy who had no real family who had the most growing experiences. He traveled far and the longer he traveled the more mature he grew. The controversy between banning this book and not banning this book has gone on for ages. Huck Finn is definitely a read for a more sophisticated audience like college because their minds are not as easily influenced and they have their morals set. It does a great job at giving you a personal intake on how life was like back then for more than just one person. It also shows how they are uneducated with how things are spelt and the grammar, but some high schools struggle with that severely and this would not help their situation. If Huck Finn was to be taught in college hopefully the students have a better understanding of grammar and knowledge on how to spell.
Further to touch on the topic of maturity the book has some mature language and situations that college students would comprehend more. The book has the “n” word 219 times, which in high school there are many immature students that would have this ending badly. In high school their brains of what is right and what is wrong is still forming which is why they are considered minors. Adults have a better grasp about how things should be handled and interpreted. “The remedy is to refuse to teach this novel in high school and wait until college - or even graduate school - where it can be put in proper context” (Moore, L). The book touches on when racism was at its peak while showing that it is wrong and having Huck come to realize that. Jim, a runaway slave was with Huck at different levels of his maturity while showing him what is right and wrong. These instances changed Huck’s viewpoint on slavery while Jim was becoming a father figure to Huck.
An equally important topic is the history this book offers. It gives an accurate feel to what it would be like from a different point is time. Yes there are other ways to show this, but this book already gives such depth and meaning while already in the curriculum. While reading the book it gives information that history classes fail to touch on. History class tells you what happened while Huckleberry Finn helps you feel what it was like to happen. The book always makes you think about more details then in movies because in movies they are already there given to you so you don’t have much room left to imagine it yourself.
Another concern about when this book should be taught is that in high school our vocabulary is still increasing while still trying to comprehend all the different punctuations and uses of grammar. In college they may still be doing the same thing, but it has slowed down to where not every student will have a vocabulary list. If you have ever read the book one of the first things you notice is all of the misspelled words and incorrect punctuation. Reading is what children use to help them spell; as we get older we do not change that we just don’t really think about it as we are doing it. The book is very hard to follow enough as it is, but trying to understand what the words are saying makes it even more difficult.
As a result of having read this book and thinking through what the future of this book may hold, the best option would be to move this book to a more sophisticated level of readers who will be able to understand Twain’s full potential for the book while maintaining their knowledge without it being damaged.

Grammar Will Help
My name is Innocent Umunna. I was born and raised in Nigeria, live in Manteca. I work for Santa Clara County. I am married with three Children. My everyday activities include go to work and study at home. I enjoy reading, listen to music and travelling. I also find my interest in soccer and doing social activities.
According to the Oxford dictionary, “Grammar is the way in which words are put together to form proper sentences.” I am taking this class to learn how to solve my grammatical problems with English via knowing the structure and set of rules that will help me form proper sentences and communicate better. To obtain an effective communication skill, this will help to develop my accuracy and fluency in communication. By learning this class I will speak, read and write in a smooth and skillful way. This is because my communicative skill will only develop when I connect or relate grammatical development to my ability to communicate. Above all, with correct grammar people will not misunderstand me when I speak. Grammar will help me to express my thoughts and ideas effectively.
Yes, I have taken online classes before, and I was successful. Some of the things that helped me to succeed are thus. I have passion for the class I have registered, which serves as a drive to be disciplined and persevere even in tough times. I keep focusing, taking one step at a time and remembering that why I am taking the class is for a better career that will help me to take good care of my family. I see my online classes as a job by making it my top priority. Setting a daily small goal for myself and making sure that I accomplish it each day. At the beginning of each semester, I make myself a clear and achievable study plan, by planning my readings and when to work on my assignments. I also give room for unexpected circumstances.
I have a designated quiet place at home that is free of distraction where I can relax and study especially when nobody is at home. I try to remove or limit myself from media and social media distractions by turning off phone and TV during my study time. In conclusion, my suggestions to students who are new to online classes are to stay focused and realize the reason you have registered these classes. Understand that to achieve your desired goal for online classes, make sure you have a detailed breakdown task in your calendar on what you will accomplish each day. Like I stated earlier, take one step at a time by dividing your time to each section and give yourself small break in between sections to allow you to refresh your brain to get extra energy to continue. After studying, try to quiz yourself as this will help to test your knowledge and keep you mentally engaged and ready for your main quiz or exam. When you quiz yourself and fail, go back and find out why you fail by reading the assigned chapters again, by reading it again will make it to stick. If I did it and I succeeded, do it you will also succeed.

The Crisis on Foreign Land Now i Call Home
The significance of writing and reading were often emphasized due to its ubiquitous use as mean of communicating. Specifically in the English language, it is required of you to be precise and logical. Nevertheless, the sentences must be structured with wide scope of vocabulary. Mastering the language would require considerable amount of attention to remember the rules, the syntax, and the pronunciations; even for a native speaker.
As a child growing up in a third world country where the literacy rate was substandard and shockingly low, I wasn’t too invested in books, or rather it wasn’t much of an option. I remembered the first time I was able to read to myself the One thousand and one nights of Arabian stories. I spent hours and hours reading and often fantasize about being part of the exciting heroic adventures, and the venturesome characters, making the stories came alive. It was the most miraculous and extraordinary experience that a child could wish for.
However, the grimness of reality struck and washed away the fantasies in an instant as I became aware of my surroundings, particularly my family dynamic. Kids my age were on the street carry little bowls begging for food hoping not to starve before lay down for bed. Robberies, burglaries, and gang activities were ordinary headlines of the daily newspapers. Every family struggled to find a job that was sufficient, including my own. As pleasurable as burying myself in the stories, the taste of reality proven to be quite the contrary. Until this day, I still reminisce on the past occasionally, despite the harsh reality.
Once I’ve arrived in the United States, it was no great surprise that learning English as a second language was an absolute must. Similarly to many other “FOBs”, as they call it, I’ve experienced the obscure of culture shock. I faced a disoriented experience due to the unfamiliar ways of life and laws. Not to mention the awful means I had to use to communicate because the only two things I knew to say were “Hello” and “Thank you”. I went through a silent phase where I tried to absorb the vocabulary as well as the culture from TV shows and friends in school. It was strenuous trying to make out a sentence, much less keeping the conversations rolling. The English grammar was complex, making it more demanding to master and use correctly. To ensure I was constructing a sentence correctly was challenging, particularly when I was engaged in a conversation with someone who spoke at brisk pace. I had to remember to adjectives before nouns and adverbs before verbs, which was entirely opposite to what I was accustomed to.
The use of punctuation was crucial and was not stressed enough during my journey of learning English. In sixth grade, one of my essay caused my English class to shred tears as my teacher was reading it out loud to my classmates. Not because it was tragic or depressing, but simply due to the lack of punctuations. It cracked up my classmates, while the laughter echoed all the way across the hall, when I wrote “Cody finds an inspiration in cooking his family and his dog.” . But what I meant was “Cody finds an inspiration in cooking, his family, and his dog.” Although it was hysterical, yet it gave the sentence a different meaning entirely.
Similar to constructing sentences, pronunciation had also proven to be quite a challenge for beginners like myself. Many English words bear a peculiar form of spelling which it’s almost impossible to pronounce it correctly on your first try. Take the word “mischievous” for example. At first attempt, most people would pronounce [Mis-chi-eevus] when it’s actually pronounced [Mis-chuh-vus]. In another instance, where read is the past tense of read and it is pronounced [Red] like the color, whereas the present tense is pronounced [Reed]. There’s no way to differentiate between the two pronunciations beside to base it on the context of the sentence.
Once in a while, I would encounter a pedant who would obsessively criticizing my dismissible grammar mistakes as well my slurred pronunciations. The bleak comments were often disheartening and embarrassing. On the bright side, it taught me how to speak correctly since I wouldn’t want to be in the same situation. Likewise, some people were constructively criticizing my missing “s” and correct my poor designed sentences with good intent to improve my English skill.
From my experience, learning grammar is comparable to cooking, I could learn and read all the rules and theories, however, the food won’t taste good the first try. It’s only get better if you spent time practicing. Until then, it became a natural reflex where I didn’t have to doubt myself, thinking about all the possible grammar mistakes I could’ve made or translating words between the two languages to express myself . To be able to comprehend the English language was no smooth sail. It desires an extensive measure of consideration of many factors such as grammar, syntax, punctuation, and pronunciation.

The Ultimate Grilled Hamburger
What if i ask you right now that I would give you a treat, anything you want to eat? What would be the first thing that comes to your mind? I can guarantee that you would instantly crave for a heavy juicy hamburger that can melt any stress that goes in your mind and that great tummy you got. However, a normal hamburger is just not enough for food lover if it is not the best hamburger, more like a grilled hamburger. But, there’s the catch!!!
How often do you find a good grilled hamburger, let alone be super duper one. Even after going through several cooking recipes one cannot just get it right enough. Well, the art to The Ultimate Grilled Hamburger is not tough at all rather it’s just a few minor changes to the approach that makes the whole difference.
Here we are going to reveal those little details that will turn any normal grilled hamburger in to the ultimate one.
1. First, let’s start with the meat selection. When it comes to meat it is always best to select a fatty one. WAIT WHAT?!
Yes, a highly fat content meat is perfect for the juiciness and the moisture of the burger. To be precise 15-20% fat content is the best for any meat. A “Ground Chuck” beef is the best ground beef for making hamburgers. Another thing many might have queries about is how to keep the ground beef attached? Actually unlike meatloaves or meatballs, it does not need anything extra to keep attached. The ground beef stays together by itself.
2. Secondly, we have to make proper and perfect patties. To begin with, the patties should be refrigerated in order to make it stick together. A perfect patty would weigh up to 6-7 ounces and about an inch thick(1”). A trick here to make it special is to stop the protruding of the patty by giving a slight press of the thumb as it creates concavity on the patty.
3. Next comes the preparation of the grill. Olive oil should be brushed over the grills so that it does not stick with the patties. A big and a common mistake that everyone makes is that they press the patty too much. NO PRESSING! It draws out the juice out of the patty.
The best way to do it is to let patty sear for 3-4 minutes and then flip it. It is best to flip it only once and that’s why the searing time needs to be properly maintained.
4. Finally, to overview the whole cooking process it is always best to use a thermometer. There are various types of heat thermometer such as Digital Thermometers both with and without wires, Instant Read Thermometers, etc. It allows to check the internal temperature of the burger.
The burger needs to be cooked within (365-400) degrees whereas the internal temperature needs to maintained around 160 degrees. Cooking time varies according to the burger type like
- Rare: 4-5 minutes
- Medium-Rare: 6-7 minutes
- Medium: 8-9 minutes
5. Just before serving one can add a few seasonings but it needs to made sure that it is kept for 4-5 minutes before serving. It will let the juice out and give a moist and juicy flavour to the burger.
It is never hard to cook The Ultimate Grilled Hamburger if one just knows the little tricks. And by avoiding those little mistakes and adjust a few things it is possible to experience the juicy, heart melting, mind boggling taste that everyone wants in a perfect grilled hamburger.
