Why did Japan Attack Pearl Harbor?

The bombing of Pearl Harbor is a day in history that defines our ultimate involvement in World War II. December 7, 1941 was a most unfortunate day as the people of Honolulu were attacked by Japanese Navy Air Services landing bombs on Pearl Harbor just before 8 in the morning.

'There was no other option,' Shigenori Togo, Japanese Foreign Minister in 1941, justified the Japanese attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, 78 years ago. An aggression that changed the course of the Second World War - forcing our isolationist United States into the depths of war - and that, from the Eastern perspective, broke the dynamics of history in Asia.

Precisely from the Japanese perspective, the basis of the attack on Pearl Harbor was found ten years earlier, with the Japanese invasion of China that ended up generating the state of Manchukuo. The crash of 1929 also affected Japan, whose population surrendered to the military and the solution they proposed: territorial expansion through war to feed on raw materials. Manchukuo was the bridgehead in continental Asia, legitimized by the presence of Pu Yi, former emperor of China, and which served as a base for expansion to the south: from French Indochina to British Malaysia or the Netherlands Antilles. That is to say, towards the colonies of Europe that the 1930s had left in a state of semi-abandonment.

By 1940, Japan's continental expansion made it a strategic ally in an already-guessed global conflict. After committing not to attack the USSR, Tokyo joined the Berlin-Rome axis in the Tripartite Pact signed on September 27, 1940, which gave Japan territorial primacy in Asia. And it was at that moment that the United States felt the threat. With the USSR concerned about its European front, the expansion in the Pacific - on the mainland the rival was China - of the Japanese Empire met only one possible resistance: that of Washington.

“The emperor seemed calm and unwavering after making a decision.” This was Hideki Tojo’s testimony written by Michio Yuzawa, Deputy Minister of the Interior, three hours after the meeting he had with the Prime Minister and another of his advisers preluding the attack on Pearl Harbor. After spending a decade in the hands of an acquaintance of some descendants of Yuzawa, the fact that he now sees the light has a plausible value, and it is that the document indicates Hirohito as responsible for approving the affront to the United States.

The written message meddled with a highly sensitive issue for Japanese society: the degree of guilt of the emperor in the war disaster, who met Tojo on the eve of the attack. Quotes such as 'If Her Majesty regretted anything about the negotiations with Britain and the United States, you would have seen something bleak. There was no such indication, which must be the result of his determination 'or' I am completely relieved. Given the current conditions, I could say that we have practically already won,” confirm Hirohito's support for the Government's decision to inexorably reject the diplomatic channel in favor of weapons.

In any case, Takahisa Furukawa has characterized Tojo's relief confessions as symptoms of a good bureaucrat but a bad leader. Tojo was a bureaucrat unable to make his own decisions, so he turned to the emperor as his supervisor. If he did not say otherwise, then he would proceed. The report clearly reveals a total lack of political leadership in Japan, 'says this expert in the history of war from Nihon University, who has confirmed the authenticity of the document. Yuzawa himself holds an opinion of the Prime Minister as a passionate and loyal man but short-sighted and without a philosophy of political chief.

While Tojo was blamed for forcing the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and executed as a first-degree war criminal in 1948, Hirohito was protected from prosecution in the Tokyo trials. Many historians have been questioning the efforts of General Douglas MacArthur and his clique to exonerate the emperor by placing all the blame on the backpacks of the other visible heads of the Japanese Empire, both political and military.

The United States considered its representative importance to be fundamental to rebuilding a ruined nation and used it as a guarantee of stability in the democratic future of Japan. So much so that, despite having to renounce his condition at the end of the conflict, Hirohito, devoid of all responsibility, died in 1989 after more than 62 years on the throne. But history, sometimes later than usual, always ends up doing justice.

“Outliers” (book Report)

In the book The Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell proposes the idea that “if you work hard enough and assert yourself, and use your mind and imagination, you can shape the world to your desire.” Many people have been successful in life but they had to work for success. These people that you hear about didn’t give up and then get lucky, they persevered and continued. That made them what they are today. I agree with this quote because of three things: Success is earned not given, Only the hard workers are rewarded, Many things were created from someone who used their imagination. Success is earned not given. You have to work to get what you want in life. You have to work hard enough to were you absolutely deserve it. One good example of this is Jimmy Butler. Jimmy Butler grew up without a father and was eventually kicked out of his house. He lived on the streets for many years. He was not good at basketball like he is now. He was barely surviving. He worked his but off to get to where his is now. Nobody just walked up to him and said “your an NBA star now.” He worked and worked until he was amazing. And it saved his life. If he didn’t put in the work, he might not be the man he is today. Only the hard workers are rewarded.

In the book, Gladwell also talks about the 10,000 hour rule. This means that anyone that is a masters at what he/she does put at least 10,000 hours of work in of practice to get good. The people that put in 10,000 hours put in enough work that hey are masters at what they do. Gladwell points out studies in the book show that people who are famous for playing an instrument reported practicing for at least 10,000 hours. People that aren't famous but are good reported practicing for around 8,000 hours. People who are not famous and are ok reported practicing around 6,000 hours. Bill Gates was good with computers because through High School and College he used the computers for over 10,000 hours. Bill Gates also had access to a terminal in the eighth grade. However if he didn’t have the early access, he might be the same man he is today. Many things were created by someone who used their imagination. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs made computers and phone to make communications easier and it helped a lot of people. Prosthetic limbs were made because someone wanted to help disabled be able to live like normal people. These people that make and create things, they do it with their imagination. The human imagination has incredible capabilities that can lead new generations to do great things. If these people never used their imagination, the world would look a lot different from how it looks today.

Malcolm Gladwell States in his book Outliers “If you work hard enough and assert yourself, and use your mind and imagination, you can shape the world to your desire.” The men and women that have had a successful life all had to work for the life have. They never gave up their dreams and continued until they reached their goal. Anyone can be successful if they put the work in and try to be successful. It doesn’t happen naturally. So, I agree with the quote because based on the facts, anyone can be successful if they put in work and use their imagination to help them. Only then will they have earned success.

“A Good Man is Hard to Find”: Southern Gothic Elements

As of the late 1800’s, a new literary style had surfaced with increasing popularity. This style largely consumed much of the time through the mid 1900’s, and still continues with prevalence today. This style was known as Southern Gothic Literature, an extension of traditional gothic literature, with some American Southern twists. Southern Gothic Literature uses characteristics such as “… the presence of irrational, horrific, and transgressive thoughts, desires, and impulses; grotesque characters; dark humor, and an overall angst-ridden sense of alienation” (Bjerre), along with supernatural occurrences, unusual circumstances, conspiracies, and ironies to explore the dark adaptation of social and cultural values/ways of life within the American South. Some of the traditional ways of life examined in Southern Gothic Literature include, but are not limited to, racism, gender-roles/ patriarchy, slavery, etc. Southern Gothic literary works typically have similar plot pieces within them. Many of these stories incorporate violence, one way or another, whether it be through physical violence, or emotional violence. These stories also demonstrate an instance where there is noticeably something “off” in the world, either within the setting that the story takes place in, or within a person or a group of people. The traits of the characters in Southern Gothic stories are often repeated, and in doing so: some characteristics become the criteria for what makes a work Southern Gothic. Southern Gothic characters include those who are considered outsiders of society—such as those suffering from a disability, a peculiarity, etc. These outsiders and other characters in the story, like the antagonist, may also be based around American southern archetypes/stereotypes. Many, but not all, of the characters in Southern Gothic stories may be grouped into one of two groups. The first group being the broken. These people are the direct reflections of the cultural and societal ways of life that have become infectious and/or negative; these people may literally resemble brokenness through their physicality or more figuratively within their minds or souls. The second character group is the innocent. These characters are the heroes, the redeemers, the opposing factor in comparison to the broken. Throughout the division of short stories, the ability to label one as a Southern Gothic has become progressively easier, as the defining characteristics of these works have become unambiguous.

Flannery O’Connor, among many others, was a successful author with an abundance of short stories. One of her more famous short stories— “A Good Man is Hard to Find” can be used as a prime example of Southern Gothic Literature. From the setting, to the storyline, to the characters, all of the key elements of a true Southern Gothic piece are present. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” tells the story of a family, consisting of a feisty grandmother, an overbearing father, an inattentive mother, and two rambunctious children, as they take a road trip to Florida. In the beginning there are complaints made regarding the trip, as the Grandmother wishes for everyone to stay home, being that there was a recent prison escapee, “The Misfit”, on the loose, heading to Florida. Not heading the Grandmother’s warning, the father, Bailey, forces his family on the trip anyway. With constant misbehavior from each individual along the way, the reader would think that the story cannot get any worse, until the family gets into a car-accident, leaving them stranded on the side of the road. The Misfit, and his two companions are the first to find the family, leading to their unfortunate ending, resulting in execution. At first glance, this dark, short story radiates some of the basic characteristics of Southern Gothic Literature. Firstly, the family is driving through the American South, as they mention some of the traits of Georgia: “She pointed out interesting details of the scenery: Stone Mountain; the blue granite that in some places came up to both sides of the highway; the brilliant red clay banks…” (O’Connor, “A Good Man” 35). Next, with character analyzation, it could be inferred that the family represents brokenness. Within the family, the children continuously act disrespectfully without regard for others or for the consequences, while the parents take no responsibility to guide their children or to punish their wrongs. This family’s mindset is an example of a societal issue where they are set in the modern ways, in this case of parenting, which is one of the key factors in making a Southern Gothic story. The Misfit clearly plays an important role in the categorization of this story. As he is named “The Misfit” it is clear to see the Southern Gothic characteristics; one of the characteristics involves imprisonment and violence, while the Misfit is a prison escapee known for brutally murdering others. The Misfit and his companions also play the grotesque roll in the story as they are viewed in a negative light and are referred to as lesser than the rest, as the daughter exclaims while repulsed by the men “’He reminds me of a pig” (O’Connor, “A Good Man” 44). These odd, grotesque, violent, outsiders can also be known as “tricksters”, according to Melita Schaum: “… this view posits Trickster as the principle of necessary disruption when individuals or societies have become too rigid in their belies. When order threatens to become sterility—whether social or spiritual—the strange traveler arrives to shatter complacency…” (Schaum, 6). So as the tricksters, or the broken, come about the story, an opposing force, as earlier mentioned, is needed. In this instance, the Grandmother has been positioned to represent the “innocent” or this opposing force, according to Stephen Bandy as he explains “O’Connor is determined that the Grandmother shall be the Misfit’s savior, even though she may not seem so in the story” (Bandy, 109). To conclude, O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” completely models the basis of a Southern Gothic piece of literature, as all of the elements of good, evil, and the old south are included.

As Southern Gothic Literature became more popular, towards the end of the 1800’s and into the 1900’s, certain authors became increasingly well-known for their Southern Gothic works. Flannery O’Connor was capable of incorporating each and every Southern Gothic element into their works, while simultaneously developing a capturing plot that would continue to entertain audiences for decades, and even centuries.

Abortion Opinion

Today, American citizens have been endowed the right of opinion and freedom of choice but with that independence come mistakes and tragedies. Abortion has been a debated topic since the 1900s and still to this day, has been a large dispute. Abortion has been a very recent topic today in New York. On January 22 of this year, New York passed an abortion-expansion bill to “grant” women and doctors the right to freely abort a child without being charged with murder. This happened on the 45th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade case which was to legalize abortion. In 2017, nearly 882,000 abortions took place in the U.S. (U.S. Abortion Statistics). The Americans who choose for their child to be aborted are taking the freedom of the human baby away from them without a choice. Abortion is a choice, not an accident. While some may argue that life is defined after birth, science amongst other things proves that the fetus are alive from the moment of conception. The Supreme Court should overturn Roe v. Wade.

Technological advancements have the capability of showing how the fetus can be detected in earlier stages of the pregnancy. There are many advances in technology which proves the living fetus. The ultrasound is a great example of this. Christina Caron from the New York Times states, “A fetal heartbeat can be observed by ultrasound as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, a time during which most women are unaware they are pregnant.” This explains how before the mom is even aware of the fetus, the heartbeat can be heard which is the largest human sign of life. Maureen Condic of the Charlotte Lozier Institute explains how the formation of a fetu is based off two criteria: the molecular composition and how the cell behaves. This fact is not relying on opinion or religious beliefs, it is proven science of how a new life is recognized by the structure of the fetus and how it is growing inside the womb.

Through scientific research and testing the development and features of a fetus are seen almost instantly in a pregnancy. Moving from the fertilisation of an egg to establishing a special baby, the entire genetic code of a human being is created once the egg is fertilised (BBC). “The unborn has a human genetic signature. She is also the offspring of human parents, and humans can only beget other humans” (Stark). Every person on this earth has been made differently, but one thing that never changes is how everybody has a human genetic signature and code making it plainly obvious how to tell if something (fetus) is alive and human. The fetus deserves the same exact rights as women do. Pro-abortionists only consider the wellness and opinion of the woman instead of what should be the case, making the fetus equal with rights with the same amount of care.

Because it has been proven that life begins at conception, abortion is no less than murder. In the state of Ohio, explains the National Conference of State Legislatures, all the following charges apply to fetuses and anyone who is carried in the womb by another: aggravated murder, murder, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, negligent homicide, aggravated vehicular homicide, and more (National Conference of State Legislatures). Today, there are 38 states that have fetal homicide laws. These charges show how abortion is considered an act of murder in several different ways and in many states. 38 out of the 50 states already have fetal homicide laws which is well over half of the United States. There is no doubt about the fact that it’s murder. There is a man named Kansan Scott Bollig who slipped an abortion-inducing drug into his pregnant girlfriend’s food and received a first-degree murder charge. Why does society believe if a man slips an abortion pill into his girlfriend’s food intentionally, he is guilty of murder but if a mom deliberately aborts the fetus, she is innocent? What needs to be seen here is either way, abortion is murder no matter what the circumstances are.

Pro-abortionists argue that women deserve to make their own choices because they obtain their own independent rights. Yes, women have rights and can decide what to do with their lives, but it is unacceptable and wrong to take away a living baby and call it “solely a procedure” instead of what it actually is. Murder of a living fetus. At six weeks into a pregnancy, the baby’s heartbeat can be heard. There is nothing more needed to prove that indeed this baby is alive and growing. The heartbeat bill was intended to penalize doctors and parents for having an abortion when the heartbeat is detected. Representative Christina Hagan says, “We did not have the strength in the majority to overcome that veto...We do now.” Ms. Hagan, being a representative is very aware of this problem which means that the government are all aware of it too. The heartbeat bill fell short of votes to pass this bill, but are determined that by next year it will become a law. Join them and vote to save lives.

Abortion percentages are increasing right now at this instant without being recognized and stopped. The “All American Life League” reports that there are 2,899 abortions a day and 1 abortion every 30 seconds in the United States. It is absolutely mind-blowing and incredibly sickening to realize that this is how fast a murder occurs without being seen or heard about. The reasons why these women decide to kill a human doesn’t justify the murder that they are committing. Women who choose to abort can be from any and all racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. The fact of the matter is that it’s of no importance what background they have and it doesn’t make abortion any different.

There are unlimited options of how to avoid abortion. It’s chosen and not forced upon. Adoption, foster care, safety, and many more are ways to ensure that the child has a better chance of growing up in a safer environment let alone having a life. This problem has to be faced because today, it is used as an excuse and an easy way out of things. Whether because of low income, lack of a father figure, or an entire life ahead of them, life will never be easy, so learning how to deal with keeping a child and going against abortion might be hard for some, but it is saving the precious life of a fetus who deserves every right to live. Not only is abortion killing a human, it is also hurting the woman’s body. Abortion is not a natural process and isn’t a part of women’s physical nature so to choose that option, their lives are in danger too. “The World Health Organisation estimates that approximately one-third of maternal deaths are due to complications arising from illegally induced abortions” (“Safety of Women”). There is no guarantee that the mom will survive this horrible procedure which is more than enough of a reason not to do it.

Each and every person has been placed on this earth for a reason. Fetuses won’t get to experience their purpose on earth if women decide to take it from them. There is every bit of science and now technological advances that have proven and shown life inside of the womb so proceeding for an abortion is strictly a choice. “I should have known better. Pro-life arguments are now based on scientific evidence and the pro-choice arguments are not. That is a cultural, historical fact” (Fish). Fight against abortion to prevent losing another innocent life.

Against Euthanasia

Euthanasia is the act of causing or permitting the death of someone who may be suffering from a terminal illness that cannot be cured , often as a way to end the pain of that individual. Some people prefer the meaning of Euthanasia means the good and gentle way of death. Euthanasia should not be allowed because people need more help, it's murder, and it is against the bible.

Instead of giving up the doctors should help them. When a doctor sees a patient / someone giving up they should give them some good news and explain the positive outcome of getting help. Some positive outcomes of getting help is being happy with their family , they will die with finish business, happy memories, basically they will die happy and feeling like they have nothing to worry about. People should always die like they have nothing left to do in this crazy world, people should die peacefully. Patients should have someone helping them everyday while there in the hospital. Especially when they want to die. People and patients still have a whole day with family they need to see and talk with before they want to take their life into risk.

Euthanasia is an another word for murder but with just permission. It's actually Illegal . This is how “ Euthanasia “ works. The patient gives up and asks the doctor ( s ) to stick an injection or something else to kill them. Now people and especially doctors’ know that it was illegal to kill a patient, or even a person. Euthanasia was legalized in Netherland on November 28. The second chamber of the dutch Parliament accepted the proposal for a law regarding legalization of euthanasia and assistance of suicide. The proposal will now go to the First Chamber , which will probably discuss it in early 2001.

In the bible there are some verses against murder ( euthanasia ). Examples for the doctors who murder the patients is “ For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. Do not be like cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother were righteous.” For the patients, here is an example “ but the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts - murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theift, false testimony, slander. Theres is one about euthanasia, it says “ be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. Why should you die before your time?.” This phase makes sense because why give up your life when you have a whole lot ahead of you. That patient would’ve had got better.

Euthanasia is basically about a patients being murdered with permission. There giving up because they feel so much pain they don’t think they will get better. The patient would’ve had a better life when they got better. THe patient would have a whole life ahead. Its is illegal know but in some places they still do it.

Are School Uniforms a Good Idea?

As stated in a Forbes article, an average American family spends an estimated $1,700 on clothing every year, nearly 3.5% of of their total expenses (Johnson 1). Purchasing school uniforms can potentially save parents large sums of money as they would need to be purchased on a less often basis than normal clothing. A study focused on the costs associated with school uniforms was conducted in Alexandria, VA in 2013 in partnership with the National Association of Elementary School Principals, NAESP, a professional organization formed for the purpose of assisting elementary and middle school principals in the U.S. and Canada. This study revealed that 86% of study participants believed school uniforms were more cost effective than normal clothes. In addition, 77% of people who partook in the study reported that they paid less than or around $150 per year (“National Association”). The results of this study suggest that the implementation of uniforms into the school system reduced the amount of money families spent on school clothing. French Toast, a company that sells school uniforms, offers a complete set of clothing, which includes a shirt, pants, sweater, and tie, for only $45. Schools suggest each student own two sets of uniforms for the year, resulting in families spending $90 per student per school year (“Reasons Why Schools”). French Toast offers an affordable option for purchasing school uniforms. It is possible that a student might need to buy a third set of clothing, or even one set for each day of the week, yet it is still more cost-effective to purchase five sets of clothing for a total of $225 compared to purchasing new clothing throughout the school year.

While some research indicates that school uniforms save families money, other research draws the opposite conclusion . According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2015-2016, a greater number of schools in which 76% or more of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch required school uniforms (“The NCES Fast Facts”). In addition, an article from the New Yorker, founded in 1925, states that less than 4% of schools in which fewer than a quarter of students are eligible for the same free or reduced-price lunch require their students to wear uniforms (Oppenheimer). This research indicates that the people who receive financial assistance are also being required to spend money on school uniforms. Conversely, the people who can afford to purchase uniforms are not required to do so. In addition, the enforcement of school uniforms takes away from the idea of free public schooling. Laura and Scott Bell from Anderson, Indiana argue that the costs of school uniforms break the guarantee of free public education. The Bell family spent about $641 in one year on their children’s school uniforms (“School Uniforms”). Though school uniforms seem like they are a more cost-effective option compared to normal clothing, this is not always the case as the majority of families required to purchase school uniforms are from lower socio-economic groups. An NBC affiliate in York Town, Pennsylvania reported events of students missing school because their families couldn’t afford the mandatory uniforms (“School Uniforms”). These reports illustrate that not only does the requirement of school uniforms put an economic strain on some families, it also lowers their ability to receive a free and sufficient public education.

In the 2015-2016 school year, nearly 22% of public schools in the United States required students to wear uniforms. This percentage greatly increased from a mere 12% in the 1999-2000 school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (Ordway). With an increase in demand of school uniforms, an increase in production is likely to follow. In recent years, school uniforms arehave become stocked by large chain stores such as Wal-Mart, Target, and J.C. Penney, as well as online stores such as Amazon. J.C. Penney is agreesively competing to sell school uniforms. In 2011, Chief marketing officer of J.C. Penney, Mike Bolyson, explained that school uniforms are “a huge, important business for us” (Fasching-Varner 60). Large chain stores rely on school uniforms for a large amount of sales, which in turn greatly boosts their revenue.

The demand for school uniforms drastically increased over the past 20 years. The New York Times, a trusted resource since 1851, posted an article in 1998 about the sudden increase in demand for school uniforms. Craig Baker of Frank Bee School Uniforms said that “We’ve been getting calls every day from schools that want to go over to uniforms this fall.” Frank Bee School Uniforms is a manufacturer and retailer in the Bronx, New York (Foderaro). Morris Kassab, the head of the Cookies Department Store school uniform program, explains that ''I need to make sure the manufacturers I have can supply me even if it means I have to put an order in a year in advance'' (Foderaro). The increase in demand over the past years opened the door for many brick and mortar as well as online stores to sell school uniforms. This increase in supply resulted in increased shopping options for customers. It also creates competition between stores resulting in lower prices and better products.

The National Retail Federation estimated a drop in overall spending in the United States in the past few years, yet the spending on school uniforms was expected to largely increase. French Toast controls more than 10% of the United States school uniform market. President of French Toast, Michael Arking, expects sales to continue to increase. In 2013, Arking estimated that around 100,000 students would wear a school uniform for the first time that fall (Skariachan). Other retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target, and Staples are attempting to replicate French Toast’s success by adding school uniforms to their inventories. . Christin Mallon, the vice president of marketing strategy and consumer segments at Staples, said, “As we’re seeing more and more public schools going to a uniforms model, this category is a natural choice for Staples for back to school, as we provide a one stop shopping experience” (Skariachan). As more companies begin to sell school uniforms, the competition will grow. The laws of supply and demand suggest that this competition will keep prices low and affordable while still allowing companies to make profits.

Benefits of the Death Penalty

The death penalty is the administration of an execution punishment by the court to a person that has been convicted. It is used towards a person who was sentenced with a capital crime (LII Staff). This penalty has caused a lot of controversy because many people are against it, and they do not believe that the court is not superior from anyone else to decide to take the life of someone, murderer or not.
