“Sugar Changed the World” by Marc Aronson and Marina Budhos

The authors, Marc Aronson and Marina Budhos purpose for writing, “Sugar Changed the World” is to inform readers how sugar was tied into families and many primary events in history. “Sugar Changed the World” was an informative text that shows how sugar got passed around and may even be tied into your life. The authors had dealt with many conflicting viewpoints throughout their book and handled them by providing data from previous times in history to how the truth behind what happened with sugar. For example, in the video, “Louisiana Sugar Farmer” it talks about how sugar farming is in their bloods and they enjoy it. While in the book the authors talks about the blood and sweat behind the farming of the tasty substance. Although the authors of, ¨Sugar Changed the World” had a neutral explanation for conflicting viewpoints in their own book, such as page 43 and how it displays a drawing with an overseer watching over them so they would not make any mistakes. Sugar for instance had a impact on family heritage and history although there are many different sides to the story, some good others bad.

First off in, “Sugar Changed the World” the authors talk about the reason why they decided to write the informative book. It states, “It was a typically hot day, dry day in Jerusalem. Marine and I were sitting on a sun-warmed stone patio when I learned my family’s sugar story.” page one, paragraph one. This is the start to showing how sugar was important in many ways either in history or in families around the world. Marc Aronson and Marina Budhos, the authors told how sugar was intertwined in their families and shows what sugar did to their families. On page 2, Marc’s section it states, 'As a result, their rivals were desperate to find a new way to create sugar. They turned to beets.' This piece of text evidence is representing how Marc Aronson’s family had a rivalry and they needed a new way to make a sweet substance. So Nina, Marc's cousin, had a grandfather who invented a machine that could turn the raw beets into a sweet substance. This invention provided Nina's grandfather with his freedom and became a rich man who married his daughter to a noble. Marc's family had a bittersweet experience with sugar because they started off as slaves but then ended up being very wealthy people. On the other hand Marina also lived a bittersweet life. In the text she states, 'Ever since I was a little girl, I had heard about our house Guyana. It was beautiful: a long white box with a series of windows, each shaded by delicate lattice shutters.'(page 3) This house shows the time in between her family moving to British Guiana to work on the sugar plantations and their life in India. Marina's parents used to live in India and moved to British Guiana for a better life. Her father later on becomes in charge of the church from all of his successes. He decided to marry his children off to Christian. Soon the whole family was moving up and up and increasing social status. In the end Marina visited the home described and it was long gone but she understood and was still excited to learn her sugar story. The authors are two major examples that can show how sugar was included in families in unexpected ways.

Next in this text the others shows the ways sugar made its impacts into important times in history. In 'Sugar Changed the World' there are many times where sugar was apart of important dates that even you might not have known. One the timeline on page 134 it shows all of the important times sugar was in history. The timeline says, 286 B.C. - first mention of sugar cane in china.' It also states on page 73, 'The British Parliament had placed a tax on sugar without giving the North Americans any voice in the matter, and the colonist were angry.' The sentence shows how sugar was once given a tax and how people started to rebel because of it by, 'rolling barrels off ships' (73) Sugar was also had a major impact on slavery. Slaves would work all day to cut the cane and produce the sweet substance or sugar. Pages 42-55 include vast amounts of pictures showing what slaves did on the farms. These pictures consisted of men, women, and even young children working on the fields doing harvesting, planting, sugar grinding, and steamy boiling. Without slaves there would be no sugar, believed many and on page 32 it states, 'Thus, sugar drove 900,000 people into slavery.' This amount of people is only 100,000 off of a million, which is absolutely insane. Sugar was also involved with Christopher Columbus, an explorer. Part Two, Hell, in paragraph two says, 'The plants that Columbus brought with him to the island he called Hispaniola flourished.' Columbus helped sugar go all around the world by just bringing in a few plants to try out in this newfoundland.

Seeing the people once learned before be included in sugar just has readers wanting to engulf themselves in this shocking information. The author's way of showing sugars ways of importance in history was an important attribute to their book. Lastly Marc Aronson and Marina Budhos had conflicting ideas with the outlook on sugar. In 'Sugar Changed the World' showed the blood and sweat put into the sugar cane and how it was a monstrous thing. But in the video, 'Louisiana Sugar Farmer' it shows that they grew up with sugar in their blood and they enjoyed the farming. While different people have different experiences with sugar the book and the video are two complete opposite point of views. In 'Sugar Changed the World' it states, 'The millions of Africans taken to work in the sugar were not taught to read and write. They were not meant to speak, but to work.' (35) On the other hand in the video Mr. Blanchard states, 'I got sugar in my blood.' This refers to how he has grown up with it and how he enjoy working the sugar cane farms. Nowadays many people decide rather they want to work these farm or not, while back then people were forced into the brutal labor. These two different ways of showing sugar plantation farming shows how different people have different experiences. This video is a conflicting viewpoint to the book, 'Sugar Changed the World'. The authors decided to take the informative route while the Blanchard family took the opinionated route. The authors handle the conflict in a very subtle way by details. Marc Aronson and Marina Budhos gave an informative text on sugar and its way around history and in some heritages. Although they ended up with some conflicting viewpoints they gave facts from the past not the present.

The authors book, 'Sugar Changed the World' is an informative text informing us on the way sugar impacted society then and now. Videos such as, 'Louisiana Sugar Farmers' are conflicting to the idea of farming in the past. Videos and texts like newer ones show slavery wasn't as bad as it actually. The dark side of sugar was slavery and the slaves’ work was a brutal form of work. Work today is nothing compared to a slaves work back then. The authors give good evidence and provide a solid way of sugar and shows how it is involved in history and maybe even your life.

How does Society Treat the Disabled?

Imagine being diagnosed with an incurable, fatal disability that’s uncontrollable. Imagine being restrained to only thinking a certain way because of some defect that occured at some point in time. Imagine being humiliated in front of many people over something unmanageable and being constantly made fun of just because of something that isn’t considered normal. Imagine being disabled. There are over a million people with some kind of disability. In John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, the main character, Lennie Small, is disabled. Though, Lennie’s disability is unsaid, it’s clear that he struggles with some intellectual infirmity. When Lennie first met everyone that worked there, he was automatically questioned. As days went by, the workers he accompanied, made fun of him. Not only do situations, alike from this, occur in this novel, but they occur in real life as well. People with disabilities are seen as different individuals by many and though the disabled do not choose the way they are, society still finds ways to alienate them.

Disability is very prominent now, just as it was during the time of the Great Depression. The novel takes place during the Great Depression and in a small town where Lennie, and his friend, George Milton, are on a search for a job. Both men find a job at a barn with several other workers. In Lennie’s case, he suffers from an unknown disability and is always being ridiculed because of it from the people he works with and, occasionally, from his good friend, George. Similarly, disabilities are often seen as a deficiency in society, that hence, adds to the stereotype that leads to the discrimination against the disabled.

Disability has restricted Lennie from thinking and acting logically--more so, like a “normal human being”. Unfortunately, he struggles even more with what everyone thinks of him. During a situation where he’s doing something he doesn’t understand, he panics and has the ability to do severe damage. Because of this, he has become very close to getting into lots of trouble, which is why Lennie and George are always discovering new workplaces. Lennie, in George’s eyes, is merely a bother and is the reason they are both poor and homeless. Before their interview with their new boss, George tells Lennie that “if [the boss] finds out what a crazy bastard you are, we won’t get no job, but if [the boss] sees ya work before he hears ya talk, we’re set” (Steinbeck 6). George calling Lennie names makes him seem even more less of a person. Though Lennie may not understand it, it displays how much disrespect Lennie receives on a day to day basis. Lennie is being seen as more of an asset then an actual human being. Despite the fact that he has a disability, Lennie is a hard worker and a lot stronger than all the men, yet that’s that’s all he’s given credit for. The people he is associated with only allow him to work there for his strength and ability to move heavy objects easily; otherwise, Lennie wouldn’t be working there. Lennie’s work ethic is the only kind of respect he gets around the barn.

Similarly, George constantly tells Lennie what to do and how to act in certain situations because he is scared of what the other workers will think of Lennie and himself. George, certainly, likes to get inside of Lennie’s head to make sure he remembers to do as he is told. George wants his first impressions at the new job to go well and to do that, he believes it is best for Lennie to simply stand there and say nothing. He is always reminding him of his place in society an what he’s supposed to do. Lennie is only cooperating because he is threatened by the fact that, if he doesn’t do something right, he won't get to have their dream future with George, and more specifically, tend to the rabbits on their future farm. To get Lennie to remember, he says “‘Now when we go see the boss, what you gonna do?’ ‘I...I’ Lennie thought. His face grew tight with thought. ‘I...ain’t gonna say nothin’. Jus’ gonna stan’ there’” (Steinbeck 6). It is evident that Lennie is treated differently by each person throughout the novel. George makes most of Lennie’s decisions before he can make them himself. George does this so he is sure that Lennie won’t get himself into trouble because of his intelligence level. George is making it seem like Lennie is even more useless because he can’t even make his own decisions or let alone have the right to disagree with George. Lennie is told one thing and is expected to abide by it; if not, then he would get into trouble and not be able to tend to the rabbits. Not only does this occur in the novel, but likewise, in real life, people with disabilities are always considered less than in a society filled with “normal” people. These normal people want to feel superior over the people that struggle so they know that they are less than everyone else, which, thus, results in making disabled people’s decisions and telling them what to do because they don’t have the physical and mental ability to disagree.

Part of Lennie’s disability is that he has tendencies of touching and petting soft things and he enjoys petting dead mice because they are soft. George notices that Lennie is carrying a mouse and takes the mouse and throws it away. Afterward, Lennie starts crying because of George’s actions and when George “heard Lennie’s whimpering cry and [he] wheeled about. ‘Blubbering like a baby! Jesus Christ! A big guy like you [Lennie]!’ Lennie’s lip quivered and tears started in his eyes” (Steinbeck 9). Again, because Lennie doesn’t know right from wrong or what is too far, he didn’t understand why George takes the mouse and throws it into the lake. Lennie can assume that George is mad at him for taking the mouse. George using words like “blubbering” and “whimpering” and “baby” aren't very dignified. A mixture of name calling and harassing clearly reveals that Lennie and many other disabled people are being constantly made fun of for something they are not capable of fixing. His word choice in this scenario is stating that George is not solicitous and that Lennie is indeed a “baby” who doesn’t know how to control his emotions during certain simple situations. Societally, people don’t particularly feel sympathetic towards a disabled person, but more often think they’re pathetic for not being able to function like an average human being. Though it’s true that disabled people don’t think the same way everyone else does, but it should not be something people constantly criticize them for. People don’t realize that disabled people are suffering the most in the world; they can’t think in an intellectual way or like an intellectual would. In Lennie’s case, he is always contradicting his actions and doesn’t understand what he’s supposed to do in certain situations. Internally, this is a conflict for him because it’s always a constant battle with himself and his disability. In society, Lennie would automatically be viewed variously by other human beings and since society views him this way, he feel he can’t live up to the world’s expectations of what a normal person is.

Not only do people disapprove of Lennie and make fun of him, but they also don’t treat like a normal person, making him feel meagerly less than. In the novel, George and a few other workers were playing horseshoes and while doing so, Lennie was stuck inside the barn because no one wanted him to play with them. From inside the barn, Lennie could hear “the clang of horseshoes on the playing peg and the shouts of men playing, encouraging, jeering. But in the barn it was quiet and humming and lazy and warm. Only Lennie was in the barn…” (Steinbeck 84). Lennie’s disability results in him being excluded from the soiree with everyone, including his good friend, George. Unfortunately, Lennie is prone to causing trouble and no one, including George, wants him around because of it. It’s clear that everyone acquainted with Lennie does not want to be associated with him, which is why he is excluded from spending any extra time with any of the workers. When George and Lennie first came to the barn, George was worried that Lennie would get them both fired. Now that they’ve all been working on the barn, George still doesn’t want to acknowledge Lennie as a real human being, and let him play horseshoes with him and everyone else. Lennie’s personality alone is what makes him a person. Similarly, humans see disabled people alike from the way the workers view Lennie. People only acknowledge people with disabilities for their weakness, not for what they are good at.

It is human nature to look down upon those that are different than normal. Each person’s perception of normal is different from one another and when someone cuts the boundary, it results in discrimination. Some people tend to flout the disabled because of their own personal weaknesses and insecurities. Society will inveigle and look down upon the handicap to better themselves and make themselves feel better, even despite the fact that disabled people are suffering the most. People will pick on someone that they consider “lower than them” to feel more superior because they know they can’t do anything about it. Also, society perceives people with disabilities as useless, powerless, and inefficient human beings, which subsidize to the ideology that leads to the discrimination against the disabled. Humans need to realize that disabled people are still people; they have feelings and society should not continue to criticize them for something uncontrollable. Hence, it’s confirmed that the fact that the disabled are considered “different” is what leads to the discrimination against them.

“Oedipus Rex” by Sophocles (irony)

Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex is a classic Greek tragedy that tells the story of a king with an unavoidable fate. Oedipus, the king of Thebes, unknowingly marries his mother and kills his father, thus cursing his kingdom with a terrible famine. The tragedy follows the king’s journey to find the truth and make things right in his kingdom, his actions eventually leading to his downfall. Much controversy surrounds the character of Oedipus, however, as academics cannot decide whether he is a good man burdened with a terrible fate, or if his fate was brought upon him by his actions. Robert Hull takes up the former view in his article, “Hamartia and Heroic Nobility in Oedipus Rex”.

In his article, Hull employs Aristotle’s thoughts on hamartia to support his views of Oedipus Rex. Hull claims that, rather than having a motive of self-preservation, Oedipus’ actions are a result of “a commitment to values,” a desire for the truth. The tragedy, he claims, is “a triumph over nihilism,” as everything is “an illusion from the beginning” (Hull). The author’s reasoning is that Aristotle’s view of Oedipus Rex is not “a sin-and-punishment tragedy” with “hamartia as a moral flaw” (Hull). To put it simply, Oedipus is a good man with a tragic and unavoidable fate.

To support his case, the author defends the king’s character, saying that the treatment of the blind seer Tiresias is just, as “[Oedipus] sees himself as a paternalistic king, as his references to the people of Thebes as his children” and that, in refusing to tell the king what he sees, “Tiresias is failing the people in their direst moment” (Hull). Once Tiresias discloses the information, however, Oedipus reacts in a very extreme manner and claims that the seer is plotting against him. Again, the author supports the king, declaring that his reaction is just, as he has “no idea of the truth of Tiresias’ accusations” (Hull).

Hull’s article has a good perspective on Oedipus, as it gives the protagonist the benefit of the doubt. The King of Thebes, indeed is not a completely rotten character. Although he has a somewhat rocky start, he is repentant once he discovers his wrongdoings and banishes himself from his own kingdom to save the citizens from famine. Some may argue that his motives in discovering the truth are merely those of a self-preservative nature. While this is a possibility, he still takes the time to look into the situation and deals with the consequences, rather than hiding the truth from his people. While Oedipus is not the best king, he has the interest of his people in mind, making him one of the more decent rulers of the day. Another interesting perspective to look at in the story of Oedipus would be that of his wife and mother, Jocasta. A psychoanalysis on her character would be a fascinating subject to study.

Filicide, or child murder, is a surprisingly common theme in fairytales, considering how outraged the public reacts to it. Snow White is “arguably the most well-known” of the fairytales depicting homicide. Most adults and children are familiar with the plot: a beautiful girl is murdered three times by her evil step-mother, but in the end is saved by a handsome prince and lives happily ever after. Despite the widespread knowledge of the fairytale, many are ignorant of the origins of the story. In her article, “The Fact and Fantasy of Filicide in ‘Snow White’”, Michelle Abate discusses the roots of the popular story and the motives for murdering the heroine.

Abate starts off her article by reminding her readers that fairytales were originally intended for an adult audience, thus giving reason for the gruesome and somewhat perverse nature of the stories. She later uses the origin to explain the homicidal nature of the step-mother, claiming that the telling of these stories “serve a function that is as freeing and empowering as it is cathartic and therapeutic” (Abate). The queen’s persecution of Snow White “reveals [that the] mistreatment often comes at the hands of the men and women who are supposed to love, nurture, and protect young people the most: their parents or guardians” (Abate). The author later discusses the reasons for the intense jealousy of the step-mother. Abate’s reasoning is that Snow’s beauty rivals not only the queen’s appearance, but also her power. In a patriarchal society, a woman’s beauty and skillfulness is her only value. Without either, she is useless in a “male- dominated society” (Abate). Her “loss of the title of the fairest one of all constitutes not simply a threat to her ego but also a threat to her influence, agency, and even socioeconomic means of survival” (Abate). In the text, Abate also includes the research of psychologists on filicide, as to prove that homicidal thoughts towards children are not uncommon, but rarely acknowledged because of guilt and shame. What is not normal, however, is acting upon those thoughts, like the queen did. Because of her filicidal actions, which serve as an outlet for the fantasies of the adult audience, there is a dire need for her actions “to be not simply rebuked but horrifically punished” (Abate). The result of this need is being forced to wear hot iron shoes and dance until she dies, a punishment administered by none other than the queen’s victim, Snow White, at her wedding to the prince who saved her. A public humiliation such as this is only fitting for such a heinous crime as murdering children.

Abate’s point of view of the story is an interesting one, as it still depicts the queen as a villain, but also brings light to the normalcy of a desire for filicide in parents. Although the thought is sickening, it is logical that thoughts of filicide would be normal, considering how common a theme it is in fairytales. The author also uses her text to highlight flaws in the societal system in explaining how a patriarchal system could cause competition between women, even to the point of killing a young girl seen as a threat. Looking at the story of Snow White and her homicidal step-mother through a feminist lens is another interesting take on the story, one that I would like to research in more detail.

Neonatal Nursing

Neonatal Nursing is a subspecialty for nurses. It is a field of nursing specially designed for newborns and babies up to a month old. Neonatal feeding is an important part of the infant care program. These are trained professionals who focus on guaranteeing the newborns and babies under their supervision will withstand any health hazard they may experience.

As a neonatal nurse, you must acquire the skills to be able to make a difference in the lives of the infants, as well as their families. In order to even consider being a neonatal nurse, you must first become a Registered Nurse (RN). The first actual step is earning an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). You must also get certified as an RN. In order to increase your pay, you can also get a Master’s of Science (MSN) in Nursing, which can be obtained in 2 years. This education could be obtained at four-year schools, including most private, public, and online colleges or universities. The main entry requirements for these schools are a High School diploma or GED. You have a better chance of getting into major universities if you have a 3.0 GPA or higher. This entire process would take at least 4+ years, especially if you want to increase your chances of getting the job. As you can see, you must be well educated in order to have the lives of the little ones in your hands.

In addition to this, not everyone is suited to become a nurse for the fragile newborns. You must have the right skills, talents, and experience. A neonatal nurse must be highly organized, able to prioritize efficiently, have empathetic understanding for others, interest in newborns, competence to work in highly technical areas, ability to work efficiently in multidisciplinary teams, and good communication skills. Without them, a person shouldn’t even consider becoming a neonatal nurse. Despite my being too young to get a job or go to college, I could still gain experience for this career by volunteering at a local hospital, enrolling in advanced math and science classes at school, and even by taking a CPR/ First Aid course. I feel as if I am suited because I match almost all of the character traits needed to be a neonatal nurse, especially due to my interest in newborns, empathy, and organization skills. I’ve always wanted my future profession to deal with babies or in a hospital. This career has both, so it is perfect. It is understood that a person must embody the right qualities and skills to be a successful neonatal nurse.

Neonatal Nursing is one of the highest paying nursing careers. Imagine getting paid an abundant amount of money, doing something you love. The standard beginning wage is $33/hr. in San Diego and $26/hr. in the entire United States, and the maximum salary you could expect in San Diego is $104K and 130K in the United States. Your salary can vary from others based on your level of nursing degree and nursing education, years of experience in the field, location of job, type of work you do, and even type of specialty nurse. Though you may earn a lot of money, a lot of money goes into setting yourself up for this profession, with tuition and fees costing the majority. Additionally, the school will request that you get specific books and materials that often include: a second-hand watch, nursing scissors, medical and drug dictionaries, penlight, a stethoscope, scrubs, and good shoes. You can pay for this with your own money, and if you are lucky, you may qualify for financial assistance, scholarships and student loans, which can help with some of the expenses.

While full-time employees, nurses are eligible for a number of benefits which can make a substantial difference in compensation is broken down into monetary value. Such benefits make an already enticing career even more appealing, from medical benefits to paid time off. Some benefits do not extend until nurses have served 90 days, depending on the employer. Nurses have the health benefit of insurance. Full-time nurses are responsible for comprehensive medical, health, hearing, and pharmacy benefits, as well as malpractice insurance. Most companies also provide life insurance and long-term care insurance programs. Nurses also get vacation time with each hour they work. According to www.PayScale.com, the average nurse earns two weeks of vacation time a year. A vacation day is a day when one is permitted to not go to work and still get paid for that amount of time. Certain nurses may be compensated for the number of unused vacation days. Lastly, nurses are eligible for a retirement plan, such as 401K or 403B. Nurses will decide how much money will be paid into retirement funds to subtract from each paycheck. Many companies adjust their commitment according to the boss. A hospital, for example, can donate 50 cents to a registered retirement nurse reserve for each dollar. Nurses also have little perks such as job security, better job opportunities, varying job areas, career flexibility, and high salary packages.

Several jobs await NICU nurses in the United States, with employment expected to grow by 22 percent between 2010 and 2020. (Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Both technological advances and growing premature accidents have contributed to a promising job prospect for neonatal nurses. Neonatal nurses throughout the nation are expected to continue expanding because technology is developing. This suggests newborns that presumably wouldn't have lasted a couple of years ago will now have a great chance to live a full life. That should help maintain strong demand for neonatal nurses for the foreseeable future.

There is a saying, “There is no typical day for a nurse.” According to Ameritech College of Healthcare, “It’s almost impossible to portray a typical day for a nurse, given how different healthcare workplaces can be, and how work can vary from shift-to-shift depending on which patients a nurse needs to see.” Usually, neonatal nurses formulate treatment plans, evaluate patients, schedule and execute medication efficiency, prescribe medications, perform complex procedures, operate through lifesaving equipment, and provide families with comfort, education, and reassurance. Neonatal Nurses usually work about 8 or 12 hours. One of the most significant challenges, especially in higher-level NICUs, is taking care of babies who are barely surviving. Sometimes, even when the most advanced technology is used, babies may not live. Nurses and nurse practitioners develop a relationship not only with the baby but also with their parents and family. The best parts of the day vary for every nurse. It could be witnessing miracles, witnessing brand new eyes open, or even having the honor of being in a family’s most important days of their life. Every shift has the ability to be momentous, thrilling, stressful, enthusiastic or perhaps every one of these.

Through my research, I have learned that this career is much deeper and important than I thought. I am now more confident in my future career decision. Before this assignment, I was indecisive of what career I wanted to pursue, but I am certain I would enjoy making a difference in this profession. Beforehand, I did not even know what all jobs I’d have to do, but now I am educated on their duties and even the different levels of NICU nurses. A neonatal nurse would be a perfect fit for me.

Why is it Important to be Bilingual?

Contrary to popular belief, only about 15 to 20 percent of Americans are bilingual (Franklin). Implementing bilingual education can change this. Some think their children will not be able to handle the pressure of juggling two languages at the same time while others think neither one of the languages will be fully dominated. Others think it will cause them confusion leading to poorer school results (Western). However, it is the total opposite. Giving children the opportunity to expand their linguistic horizons has the power to open many doors. Bilingual education is a beneficial form of learning because it allows cultural understanding, boosts intelligence, AND HELPS WITH EARLY BRAIN DEVELOPMENT has advantages in the fields, and is beneficial to the mental health.

Bilingual education is teaching using the native language as well as a secondary one. It immerses the two languages in one single learning environment. For example, a student might have their English class be taught in English while their math class might be in Spanish.In this way students are able to get a first hand experience of both languages and apply them to their daily life. Students are constantly being told the more you know, the better. This is very true and applies especially to languages. Being bilingual, becomes an advantage in the work field. Employers want to hire people who can help expand their businesses and the way to do that is communicating internationally. When it comes time to choose between two similar applicants, the language factor is the determining factor. In 2006, Canadians who spoken more than one language had more jobs than those who only spoke one (Swift). Furthermore, the bilingual employees are able to ask for higher salaries such as those in Canada in 2006 (Swift). However, if that person does not receive a bilingual education, than they are amongst those whose position was taken by that of a bilingual.

I kiss his hand. I saw Sarah Good with the devil I saw Goody Osburn with the devil I saw Bridget Bishop with the devil”(Miller 595) Abigail is being manipulative by feeding the flames of the fear of witchery to distract townsfolk. She is also not taking responsibility for her dancing and letting people die for it. Abigail gains a lot of power in this situation and she already starting to abuse it. Realizing the power that she has, she uses it to get John Proctor all to herself. Abigail is at the peak of her power in Act III where Judge Danforth is seeing if Abigail is telling the truth. When Judge Danforth questions Abigail of her honorability she openly threatens him in the courtroom,”Let you beware Mr.Danforth think you be so mighty that the power if hell not turn your wits? Beware of it”(Miller 646) Abigail takes control of the court by standing up to the arguably most powerful character in the play. At this moment, Abigail overpowers Danforth and continues to abuse power to keep her charade going. Abigail's abuse of power led to the events of the witch trials leaving many men and women dead. She takes no responsibility because if her reach towards power to finally be able to be with John Proctor.

'I'll murder you,' he says, 'if my wife hangs! We must go and overthrow the court,' he says!”(Miller 672) Mary is a follower trying to be a leader who doesn't have the chutzpah to take the reigns. Also her turning on Proctor shows the audience she is also too weak and naive to have power. Mary Warren tries to be greater than what she is made out to be but her indecisiveness and just being a kid keeps her from being anything more than a maid.

John Proctor is the exception to this idea that power corrupts a person’s morals. When John is given the choice to sell out his friends or to keep his honor portray that a man with strong morals can beat the corruption that come with power. At the end of the play John Proctor is the most powerful character in the play with major authority figures like Danforth and Hale begging him to sign the paper to lie about being a witch. At first he contemplates on which decision to make later he makes his decision loud and clear,”Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!”(Miller 677) John stands up to Hale and Danforth and makes the decision on what he thinks what a man would rightfully do. John has finally forgiven himself and will not save himself after so many have fallen. Soon after Danforth refuses to take the paper and John does the right thing,”Proctor tears up the paper and crumples it”(Miller 677) John sacrifices his life for the good of the town and making sure his hanging is the last. John beats the man with his ripping of the paper and creates his own choice and new identity of individualism. Once a lowly farmer rose up and became powerful by following to his own morals and standing up for himself.

Power corrupts it turns innocent people to evil beings but it takes a good man to beat that. For instance, Senator Mccarthy while his intentions good the power corrupted him and he started to claim everyone who wasn’t in the groupthink was a communist. Then there’s men like George Washington who used his power to beat a more powerful opponent and create the free world. It takes a good man to make the world a better but those men are willing to stand up to their adversaries.

New York City: a Life in a Big City

New York City, the city of dreams and high expenses. That’s one of the things I have taken away from reading the census data and Florida’s Cities and the Creative Class. What is humorous to me is that the idea of how much residential places cost and how much space you get for the price leaves me wondering why New York City has the majority of the highest percentage of people living in the city with creative careers. However, I shouldn’t be the one questioning anything because here I am in New York City paying so much more for an education here than I would have paid at the other schools I got into. Florida would agree with the idea that the creative flock to New York City because for creative people New York City offers so many opportunities to make a name for themselves as a creative person.

New York City is covered with opportunities for the creative class living here, which just proves that when you are in a creative community, consumers flock to the city with the best and most people in that creative specialization. New York City in fact is “succeeding largely because creative people want to live there” (Florida). One of my favorite topics that the article brings up is the things that creative people are interested in. The creative class is not into tourism or entertainment but instead seek “high-quality experiences, an openness to diversity of all kinds, and, above all else, the opportunity to validate their identity as creative people” (Florida). Ironically when I’ve always thought about what New York City has to offer I think of the melting pot of Manhattan and the continuous opportunities provided for those who live here or work here like the article mentions.

When filling out the census data, I obviously was hoping New York City was going to account for the highest in creative people residing here. Which it was, other than the amount of actors here 16% was only about half of the amount as the percent of actors in Los Angeles 28% which makes logical sense. Los Angeles became more popular in the 1920s when films started being produced. Actually, Los Angeles was just a good place to go because it hardly rained, which saved money so a film day wouldn’t be canceled. California was not that populated until the gold rush occurred. Los Angeles had farms from the people that came to California because of the gold rush who either made it big or flopped in trying and didn’t have the money to go back from where they came. The city of Los Angeles didn’t really become popular to reside in until people started realizing how much more beneficial it was to film in California than it would be to film somewhere like NYC or anywhere else in the east coast. The weather and space in NYC doesn’t offer or guarantee as much as producing films in Los Angeles. Leading to the rise of the population in Los Angeles because actors need to live during filming or for working on multiple projects at a time. With that people came to the idea that if they wanted to be a movie star, date a star, or run into one this was the place to go. However, it seems a lot less likely to run into a celebrity there than to run into a celebrity here in New York City. New York City is in a 12-mile radius while Los Angeles is tremendously spread out.

Before I ramble off into oblivion about why New York City is obviously so much better and people that think otherwise are unintelligent let’s look at the census data again. Los Angeles seems to be catching up to New York City when it comes to the numbers of dancers/choreographers and artists living in the cities. The closeness in numbers is astonishing, when it comes to dancers/choreographers 8.7% live in Los Angeles and 9.1% live in New York. With artists, again the percentages are very close together, 10.4% live in Los Angeles and 10.9% are living here in New York. I think by looking specifically at those creative careers and what is needed for them we bring up space again. Space in New York City is hard to find unless you want to live outside of the city itself and even then it can still be very expensive. But in defense of New York the transportation to get back into the city by taking a simple subway ride isn’t very time consuming or cost worthy. Maybe New York City should advertise that more so more creative people will come here rather then go to Los Angeles. I think New York City offers more in all the creative industries except film. So even though numbers are rising for dance and artists living in LA, I don’t think Los Angeles is the place to make your “big break” unless it’s in the film industry.

Los Angeles will continue to rise in creative population numbers especially if the city does fix their transportation system. However, even if that was fixed, in New York City everyone is so much more driven. I don’t think I have met one lazy individual that just came to New York City not pursuing a dream. Everyone I have met are living their dream here or striving to accomplish their goals. Like the Frank Sinatra song says “if you can make it there you can make it anywhere.” New York City isn’t an easy place to live because here no one can sleep until their ambitious goal is accomplished. The amount of ambition, drive, effort, and dreams that inhabit the people of New York City is impossible to calculate in numbers. Living here just makes you more aware of the possibilities that are available to you, causing you to work harder knowing how close you are to accomplishing your dream.

A city that I thought was up and coming due to its high real estate and number of activities was San Francisco. I was really surprised that San Francisco didn’t have an overall big percentage of creative people living there. In fact, the sum in percentages of all the creative workers living there is only 11.3%. When I went to San Francisco I could definitely see a more laid back NYC, but still more hardworking and determined than Los Angeles. Again, with the space and especially real estate in San Francisco I can make sense of the small amount of creative people living in San Francisco, but still, if the real estate is so expensive and sought after who is buying it and why in San Francisco? With the increasing growth in the price of real estate there I feel like the creative class living there will continue to dwindle with the unaffordability unless they are already making it big in terms of money in their creative career or have another source of income to live there.

Overall, in the census, even with Los Angeles on New York’s tail for the dancers and artists living there I’m not worried because New York City will always be “NYC” and will always be a household name, a place you dream of going to pursue your dreams. I don’t think any city can top New York. Just saying the words “New York, New York” gives me such excitement! New York City is a place that everyone knows about whether they love it or not. New York City has worked hard to make a name for itself and develop itself into what it is today and I think it continues to develop and become a better city every day because when the creative continue to come, the city continues to strive in its greatness and maintain it’s credit of the city that you can do anything in.

“I Hear America Singing” and “I, Too”

Haven’t you, just like anybody else in America, wanted to be equal. Well, being treated the same in America is a hard task to ask for, even in today’s society. Walt Whitman’s “I Hear America Singing” and Langston Hughes “I,Too” share common features because they both share a similar perspective on America. Both poems explore the idea of what it takes to be American.

“I Hear America Singing” and “I,Too” have a common perspective, which is America, but “I,Too” has more “struggle” behind its words. The “darker brother” wants to shows that he is a proud American too, but slavery and racism was a thing in that part of history. He forgets that it will take time for them to realize that he is an American also, no matter the color of his skin. The poem altogether refers to slavery, a time in history when we weren’t treated equally based on the color of our skin, even well into the 50’s and 60’s, during the Civil Rights Movement.

In “I,Too”, the poem also connects to racism, which left a big impact on today’s society. The “darker brother” has to go “in the kitchen” because they don’t want him to be seen. HIs “master” sends him away whenever company comes over, and sends them to eat in the kitchen, just because he is not white, which symbolizes that if you were not white back in time during slavery, then you were not equal, or you were not as important. Just because his skin color is not “white”, does not mean that he can’t represent America as proud and loud as them. In contrast to “I,Too”, “I Hear America Singing” uses imagery to symbolizes that every person plays an equal part, no matter the job, they all tie in to being an American.

While “I,Too centers on slavery, “I Hear America Singing” shows unfair rights against women even though its main theme is being equal in America. “I Hear America Singing” focuses on being equal, because this poem specifically has written during a time in history where women were not treated equally as men. During the mid to late 1800’s, women were not given the late rights as men, which meant that women were rarely seen working outside the house. Even though women had unfair rights (voting, getting equal pay, serve on a jury), they still were proud to be apart of America.
