Analysis of Patent Negotiations between Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics

Introduction

Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, Intel, and IBM are just a few of the names currently dominating the technology industry. While there is substantial competition between these companies, there is also a decent amount of collaboration. The new and burgeoning technology market has recently erupted with innovation, new ideas and various forms of technology. It has become a slippery slope between building on technological innovations and infringing on the copyrights of other companies. It comes as no surprise that when there is conflict between these colossal companies, it is no small deal.

When looking at a picture of an Apple iPhone and a Samsung Smartphone side-by-side, the similarities are undeniable and although many assumed that that these technology giants would be able to successfully negotiate a mutually beneficial outcome to their disputes, it is not surprising that only recently was their 7-year patent dispute resolved.

Background

Apple and Samsung are steady occupants of two of the first three spots of the top cell phone manufacturing companies in the world (IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, July 31, 2018). Apple Inc. was founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steven Wozniak and Ronald Wayne and is currently run by CEO Tim Cook. Apple has an estimated net worth of around 1 trillion dollars (CNN Business ""Apple reaches $1 trillion value"", 2018) and is known for creating top of the line consumer technology products. This includes an array of devices such as cellphones, laptops, earphones, speakers and other handheld devices. Samsung's profile is quite similar to this. Founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chul and now led by CEOs Ki Nam Kim, Hyun Suk Kim and Dong Jin Koh, Samsung's current net worth is estimated to be around $295 billion (Luke Christou ""Samsung net worth: More than just a tech company - Compelo"" 2017). Samsung is a South Korean company that has 58 subsidiaries, Samson Electronics being the largest. Samson electronics produces everything from televisions, to home appliances, to smartwatches.

Samsung and Apple have a long, complex relationship. While clearly competitors in the cellphone market, they also have an important working relationship. Samsung is an extremely important supplier for apple. According to Slicing an Apple-- Apple and Samsung's Symbiotic Relationship, Samsung provides apple with some of the most important parts including the flash memory that holds the phone's apps, music and operating software; the working memory, or DRAM; and the applications processor that makes the whole thing work (The Economist ""Slicing an Apple"" 2011). In total, the parts supplied by Samsung makes up over a quarter of the component cost of an iPhone. Who knew such fierce competitors could also be such close business partners? This is why the technology world was shocked when in spite of this close working relationship, Apple picked a fight with Samsung.

It all started in In 2007, when Apple released its new product: the iPhone. This product single-handedly revolutionized the cellphone market and took the world by storm. With its sleek design, easy-to-use interface and slim profile, the iPhone was a hit. However, in 2010, Samsung released their new smartphone-- the Galaxy S-- which looked eerily similar to apple's popular iPhone (Levine 2012, figure 1). In the summer of 2010, Steve Jobs told Samsung executives that he considered the Galaxy S to be an illegal copy of the iPhone (Levine 2012). Hoping that this dispute could be settled outside of the courtroom, in August of this same year, Apple flew a team of their lawyers to the Samsung Headquarters in Seoul, South Korea. During a meeting with Samsung, the lawyers from Apple presented a slideshow essentially accusing the tech giant of copying the iPhone. The second slide even read: Android is designed to lead companies to imitate the iPhone product design and strategy. Unfortunately, instead of diffusing the tension, the meeting only enraged Samsung attorneys who were offended by the accusations made and in turn, came up with a list of their own patents that they claimed Apple had been illegally using. The initial attempt at negotiation failed almost immediately after it began as Samsung made it clear it was ready to fight back and the multi-year patent war between these two giants ensued.

Issues

It soon became apparent that this would not be solved by conference room discussions alone, and both companies realized the only way to settle this dispute would be by taking some kind of legal action-- even though neither of them originally wanted to do so. Apple and Samsung both felt like multiple innovations that they had patented were illegally used by the other party. Apple made the first power move in April of 2011, suing Samsung for infringement of design and utility patents, trademarks, and trade dress. Apple also claimed that multiple Samsung products copied Apple's patented product designs and infringed upon their intellectual property. Namely, Apple thought that Samsung's products mimicked Apple's iPhone's black rectangular front face, round corners, bezel... and sixteen-icon grid (Shin & Brown 2016). Samsung then countersued Apple only weeks later, filing federal charges in courts in Seoul, Tokyo, and Mannheim, asserting that Apple infringed Samsung's patents for mobile-communications technologies (Yang 2011). By July of 2012, Apple and Samsung had more than 50 ongoing lawsuits between the two of them around the globe (M??ller 2012).

Over the seven year patent dispute between the two companies, a multitude of lawsuits were filed. However, the negotiations primarily revolved around the same set of issues: firstly, the question of whether or not Samsung had infringed on Apple's multiple patents. Secondly, if they had found guilty of illegally using these patented features, how much money they should have to pay. For both sides, this became about a lot more than money.

For Apple and more specifically Tim Cook, it was about originality and the setting the precedent in court that it is not okay for other companies to take advantage of somebody else's innovations. Cook was quoted in an article in Fortune saying this:

I've always hated litigation and I continue to hate it...We just want people to invent their own stuff. So if we could get to some arrangement where we could be assured that's the case and a fair settlement on the stuff that's occurred, I would highly prefer to settle than to battle. But it the key thing is that it's very important that Apple not become the developer for the world. We need people to invent their own stuff (Elmer-Dewitt 2012)

Cook made it clear that Apple was not enthusiastic about this grueling judiciary process, but felt that it was a necessary evil. As the author of that article astutely noted, it is likely that Cook was signaling that Apple is willing to settle those things that Samsung is required to negotiate. But when it comes to protecting Apple's inventions, Cook's heels seem to be as deeply dug in as his predecessor's were (Elmer-Dewitt 2012).

Results

Apple and Samsung put an end once and for all on this back and forth legal battle in June of 2018. The judge that had been overseeing the most substantial and high steaks disputes between the companies, Lucy Koh, released a statement on June 27th, 2018 saying that the companies had informed her that they reached a settlement, but the exact terms of the settlement were not disclosed. However, the most recent verdict had been that Samsung was to pay Apple $539 million for illegally using their patents in devices like the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Tab. Apple CEO Tim Cook also released this statement after settling with Samsung:

We believe deeply in the value of design, and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers. This case has always been about more than money. Apple ignited the smartphone revolution with iPhone and it is a fact that Samsung blatantly copied our design. It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innovation of so many people at Apple. We're grateful to the jury for their service and pleased they agree that Samsung should pay for copying our products (Kastrenakes 2018).

Overall, Negotiation Tactics

This specific negotiation was very unique in the sense that even though the two companies had an important, even symbiotic, business relationship, they ended up largely taking the approach of hard positional bargaining. Both Apple and Samsung had similar overall interests that came with the nature of their companies: they both wanted their patents to be respected, their innovations not to be copied and to earn as much revenue as possible in the cell phone/communication market. However, after the initial cordial meeting, the dispute rapidly escalated in intensity and exploded into numerous lawsuits and court battles. The confidential nature of the meetings between Apple and Samsung and the sealed records makes it difficult to identify exact negotiation strategies used by either side. Within the public information, however, it is clear that both sides used a variety of techniques, both deceiptive and by-the-book, in order to achieve the outcome they wanted.

The initial negotiations that took place at the Samsung Headquarters in 2010 reflected an optimistic outlook. Apple entered with a combination of a rights and interest-based approach (Thompson 2015, 100-101). Apple was open and honest about what they wanted. They asserted that they believed Samsung had infringed their patents, and believed that they had the right to compensation for said infractions (rights-based approach). They also acknowledged that they did value Samsung as a valuable business so they would be happier settling this outside of court and offered Samsung to pay a royalty fee for every device sold that had patent violations. Although Apple intended to keep things amicable by being open, honest, and matter-of-fact, this completely failed. As it turned out, Samsung was so offended by Apple's claims that they essentially copied the iPhone that they let their emotions and egos get in the way, Without knowing it, Apple had threatened Samsungs face. In a negotiation, face is the value that a person places on his/her pubic image, reputation and status comparative with the other participants in the negotiation. Fact threat sensitivity (FTS) is the likelihood dog having a negative reaction to the face threat (Thompson 2015, 53). Samsung, possibly in part because of the different culture in East Asian Companies' mindset, had a very high FTS and reacted extremely negatively to what they perceived as a face threat. To them, it was not only offensive, but embarrassing when Apple (an equally established and historically larger technology producer) had accused them of taking advantage of innovations that were not their own. Samsung then immediately wrote up their own list of their patents that Apple had illegally used in their devices. This marked the beginning of the extreme positional bargaining. After apple recognized that this dispute was not going to be resolved outside of the courts like they had hoped, they made the first move by suing Samsung in California. The number of lawsuits only skyrocketed after this. From then on, Apple strongly insisted that Samsung had completely based their new products off the look and feel of the iPhone, which infringed on intellectual property. Meanwhile, Samsung adimatley denied all of these claims and insisted that the said designs they were accused of copying were purely new industry standards.

This positional style of bargaining continued until late 2012 when per Judge Lucy Koh's suggestion they cut the number of disputed patents in half and showed some willingness to compromise in an effort to avoid going to court (PON Staff, 2018). The ineffective positional bargaining then resumed again, until 2014 when a California court insisted that the parties participate in a mediation session. Both parties showed more of a collaborative style of negotiation when they were willing to work through a mediator in order to settle some of the issues. In this session, Apple's CEO Tim Cook and top Samsung executives attended a day long meeting hosted by a mediator. However, this attempt at mediation ultimately failed. An analysis of this case by Harvard Law School's Program on Negotiation staff proposed that mediation failed because too much time and energy had already been spent in the previous court cases, so Apple and Samsung were reluctant to give in to any agreement.

Mediation as a dispute resolution technique between business negotiators is far less likely to succeed when the parties are grudging participants... When negotiators feel they have spent significant time and energy in a case, they may feel they have invested too much to quit. Moreover, the longer they spend fighting each other, the more contentious and uncooperative they are likely to become (PON Staff, 2018).

Connecting a mobile phone or a laptop to the internet can give employees an even greater degree of flexibility. It allows us to have access to almost any type of content on mobile, but with most mobile devices today we can deposit checks, accept credit cards, order food and pay for groceries, sign digital documents, and even lock our house door and turn our lights on.

With all mobile devices there are some limitations and constraints that we have to work though in our daily lives especially when it comes to business. These strengths and limitations play out in good mobile user experiences, for example (the size of the screens) In spite of the modern trend towards larger-screen phones, what makes mobile phones so convenient and portable is their size. Compared to desktop and even laptop screens, phone screens accommodate a lot less content.

Although many phone manufactures are trying to accommodate multiple windows on the screen at the same time, the limited size of the mobile screen makes that goal quite difficult, even with today’s larger-screen phones. The vast majority of users only see a single window at a time; they cannot split the screen (as on the desktop) and work with two different apps simultaneously.

Despite considerable progress in mobile technology over the years, there should be some limitations/restriction on mobile devices when collaborate in the workplace. Some of the limitation should include limiting the amount of personal calls, sending text message or checking social media accounts while at work.

Resistance Training does not Promote Weight Loss Maintenance in Postmenopausal Women

The objective of the study was to determine if a one year long resistance training intervention was more effective in helping postmenopausal women maintain weight loss, after a six month diet-focused weight loss intervention, than nutrition intervention alone. The researchers first hypothesized that the women in the resistance training (RT) intervention group would be able to better maintain their weight and fat mass (FM) losses compared to women in the control group who only received nutrition intervention. Furthermore, the researchers hypothesized that the women in the resistance training intervention group would have a higher resting energy expenditure compared to those in the control group.

Women in both the RT intervention and control groups were provided with nutrition counseling from a registered dietitian once a month. Each subject was given a recommended calorie goal individualized to them based on their daily energy requirements and was counseled on maintaining intake based on their calculated needs. The resistance training intervention was set up as follows: three (non-consecutive) days of resistance training per week for the first six months followed by two days of (non-consecutive) resistance training per week in the last six months. Training intensity was ~70-80% of each subject's one repetition maximum (1RM) and included exercises that targeted every major muscle group. The guidelines set out by the American College of Sports Medicine were used to develop the training program and personal trainers oversaw each session. Body weight, fat mass (FM) and fat free mass (FFM), visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT/SAT), resting energy expenditure (EE), and total daily energy expenditure (EE) were all measured before and after the start of the one year intervention.

Post-intervention data showed that there was no significant difference in weight maintenance between the control and intervention groups- body weight and fat mass regain were similar in both groups. The intervention group did lose more subcutaneous (SAT fat) compared to the control group. Resting energy expenditure was not affected by 1 year of resistance training as it was expected to. Resting energy expenditure was the same after the intervention as it was after the six month weight loss time period. These findings suggest that weight maintenance is not achieved by one specific intervention, but can be achieved by either diet, resistance training- or a combination of both in postmenopausal women. The results also call for more research into the effects of increased intensity/duration/frequency of strength training on weight maintenance.

Two strengths of this study are its intensive inclusion requirements for participating and its techniques for measuring body composition and energy requirements. There are 11 inclusion criteria that subjects had to meet to enter the trial, reducing the chance that factors that were unaccounted for affected the results. Furthermore, all of the measurements taken were done so by gold-standard practices (FM and FFM were measured using a DXA scanner, VAT and SAT were measured using with a CT scan, REE was measured using indirect calorimetry, and daily EE was measured using doubly labeled water). Two weaknesses of this study are its moderate compliance and small sample size. Adherence to the resistance training program was mediocre at 64%, which could have affected outcomes. Additionally, the sample size was only 54 so the data could be misrepresentative of the population.

Weight Loss Strategies in Combat Sports and Concerning Habits in Mixed Martial Arts

Introduction

The overall purpose of this research is to investigate the extent of weight loss and the popularity of weight loss strategies in different combat sports. Almost every combat sport has different weight classes that holds competitors at certain weights to make sure competition is fair and to keep them safe. This leads to certain strategies being constructed so that one fighter can potentially have an advantage over the other.

Methods

The researchers used a survey to conduct their research. They used a previously used survey developed and validated for Judo. The survey was altered by replacing the Judo language with a more general language pertaining to all combat sports. The modified survey was then given to 637 athletes that ranged from wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Boxing, Taekwondo and MMA. The survey asked athletes certain questions including, their weight, height, competitive level, dietary history, etc. The survey also contained questions about their weight loss journey before the weigh ins and after. The survey was conducted using Qualtrics online questionnaire software and the study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the host institution in Australia.

Results

The research found that 85% of all fighters used some type of weight loss treatment prior to their weigh ins. Most of the fighters began to lose weight 14-28 days before the official weigh ins. Overall, the average weight lost for all combat fighters was around 6% body weight, while MMA was more than 11.5% body weight. After the competition, fighters reported that they gained back all of their original weight seven days after the competition. Dieting, restricting fluids, and exercise were the most common strategies used to lose weight.

Discussion

The findings show that almost all combat sports use some type of weight manipulation to try to gain an advantage during the competition. It was also confirmed that MMA took weight loss before the weigh ins to the extreme by losing almost twice as much weight as other combat sports. It also confirmed that increased exercise and manipulating fluid intake were the common methods used to lose weight.

The information gathered in the research gives us a better understanding of the strategies different combat sports and athletes use to lose weight prior to weigh-ins. The research also agreed with previous research suggesting that MMA weight cutting strategies were more extreme than other combat sports it also lets us know more details about the strategies used that could potentially be dangerous to the athletes.

Conclusions

The authors conclude that manipulating weight to be within a certain weight class in most combat sports, ranging from MMA to boxing to wrestling, is commonplace and the norm for combat sports' culture. Athletes commonly use several strategies that could potentially put their health at risk and that could also negatively affect their performance.

Importance

The overall importance of this research done is essential for developing regulations to keep athletes safe while they lose weight in the weeks or months leading up to their weigh ins and competitions. It also informs coaches and competitors to make informed decisions for an athlete's future and competitive success.

The Discovery of Photosynthesis

Although photosynthesis has been a process that has occurred since the beginning of time, it was not yet discovered until around the 1600's. Although, like many discoveries in science, the first time it was noticed was not the last time it'd be discovered nor the last time its understanding would be expanded. After the first discovery in the 1600's, it was then further understood in 1771, and again in 1779.

Responsible for the first time photosynthesis was discovered in the 1600's, Jan Baptista van Helmont was carrying out an experiment with a willow tree. Within the experiment, Helmont placed the tree in a pot with soil in a controlled environment. Often, he'd measure the soil and water the plant. By the end of the experiment, the soil weight remained close to the same, but the tree had grown. Helmont concluded that water assists with the growth of plants. This is significant in photosynthesis because water plays a main role in the process and is what the plant uses to make oxygen during it.

At the time, Helmont was unaware of the significance his findings would soon prove to be, but in 1771, Joseph Priestley would help the understanding of the biochemical process of photosynthesis. In his series of experiments, the English chemist was collecting gases that came off when he'd heat a variety of substances in closed jars. In one experiment, Priestly placed a candle and lit it inside a jar, but the flame wouldn't last very long and the air was what he called, injured. Curious to see what the injured air would do to a living thing, he placed a mint leaf inside of the jar and left it for several days. When Priestley came back to the jar, he was pleasantly surprised to find the leaf still green and the air inside to have turned clean again. He considered the leaf to be the reason the air had turned out to be clean but didn't know why. Another experiment Priestley conducted concluded with the same results but involved different variables. In his other experiment, he had plants show their way of transforming the air by first placing a mouse in a jar until it collapsed. Then, he placed the mouse in a jar with a plant and the mice that were placed with the plants survived much easier. Because of his experiments, Priestly proved that plants could be used to change the composition of air.

Furthering the findings of Priestley, a Dutch chemist by the name of Jan Ingenhousz conducted Priestley's experiments again but instead paying close attention to the other factors presented in the experiment. For example, when Ingenhousz redid the experiments for himself, he did some placed in sunlight and some not placed in sunlight. Ingenhousz determined that plants would only transform air when they're placed in sunlight.

Together, Helmont, Priestley, and Ingenhousz all played important roles in discovering the different parts of photosynthesis and relating them back to one another, continuously expanding the knowledge and understanding of photosynthesis itself. Helmont discovered the water component of photosynthesis, Priestley discovered the way plants can transform air, and Ingenhousz discovered the significance of sunlight throughout the photosynthesis process. Science discoveries aren't always fully explained when they're first discovered, it takes many years of hard work and multiple intelligent people to expand ideas and processes to their fullest.

The Beatles World Records and Achievements

The Beatles are the most successful and best known band of the twentieth century. The main members of the Beatles were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Formed by Lennon and McCartney, who first performed together in Liverpool, England in 1957, they loved American rock and roll. Lennon played the guitar and sang. McCartney played bass and sang. They were both self taught. By the end of 1957 they made Harrison the lead guitarist.They tried a different type of music, and several different names, and they had some other band members for a while. At first they played in Liverpool and Hamburg, Germany. The Beatles recruited Ringo Starr, whom they had befriended in Hamburg. They got a manager named Brian Epstein who shared their desire that they would become "bigger than Elvis."

Their first single called "Love Me Do" (released October, 1962)reached number 17 on the British charts. Their next single that was called "Please Please Me" (January, 1963), hit number one. Delighted with their success, they recorded their first album, Please Please Me (March, 1963), and it also reached the top of the charts. Their third single called "From Me To You" (April, 1963), also hit number one in England, but it was their fourth, "She Loves You" (August, 1963), which brought "Beatlemania."

The group first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964. It was viewed by an estimated 73 million people. Soon the franchise led to film with A Hard Day's Night, a comedy which focused on the Beatles' charm and humor as much as their music. As the Beatles grew as composers, they became more receptive to producer George Martin's style. Martin had studied music theory, composition, and orchestration, and encouraged the Beatles to "think symphonically."

Their next album, Revolver (August, 1966), is widely thought of as the Beatles' masterpiece, and some consider it the greatest album ever made, with fourteen flawless compositions. Many will agree with Martin's judgment that Revolver is the Beatles' best album, while Sgt. Pepper is their most significant work. Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band (June, 1967) has been hailed as the model album of the sixties. To list everything great and important about it would fill books, but special mention must be made of "A Day in the Life," one of the last great Lennon-McCartney collaborations, and one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs of their careers.

Magical Mystery Tour was a pointless film following the Beatles on a bus trip around England. Paul got the idea from the Merry Pranksters, a counterculture group traveling across America. The film was a flop, and the Beatles' first real failure.

In 1968 the Beatles went to India to study meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, during which they learned of manager Epstein's death from an overdose of sleeping pills. Eventually disenchanted with the Maharishi, the Beatles returned with a great load of songs.The result was one of the Beatles' strangest albums, The Beatles (November, 1968).

Yellow Submarine was a cartoon made to fulfill the Beatles' film contract with United Artists (although Let It Be would actually fulfill this obligation a year later). The odd albums of the late 1960s marked the beginning of the end of the Beatles. Musically, their individual styles were drifting apart. Eventually the Beatles produced Abbey Road (September 1969), one of their best-selling and all-time favorite albums.

Their last album, Let It Be, was released in May 1970, and the band broke up in June 1970 due to unbeatable conflicts.One of their greatest achievements was to play across boundaries and appeal to multiple generations and classes, and represent the counter-culture while winning the respect of the establishment.

November 14, 2018 Introduction Purpose and Importance of topic Cellular respiration and photosynthesis are necessary modes of life for creating and expending energy in plants. Photosynthesis produces oxygen while cellular respiration creates ATP, the energy currency of the cell. These processes are necessary for plant and animal life because plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis, which provides animals and mammalian populations with necessary oxygen. It is important to explore the different ways photosynthesis and cellular respiration can occur and what factors affect them in order to make connections to larger scientific studies. Background The locations of photosynthesis and cellular respiration differ because photosynthesis takes place only in plants, while cellular respiration takes place in plants and many other organisms. Photosynthesis occurs in a chloroplast, and cellular respiration occurs in mitochondria.

Mitochondria can be found both in plants and animals while chloroplasts can only be found in plants. Locations of cellular cycles specific to photosynthesis and cellular respiration are also important. Photosynthesis uses light and dark reactions to prepare energy from the sun into consumable energy for the plant and oxygen. Light reactions, also known as light-dependent reactions, use energy to take electrons from water, which then create nicotinamide adenine phosphate (NADPH) to push protons into a membrane. The protons go back across the gradient in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthase to help make ATP that is coupled with NADPH, then yielding oxygen and water (Johnson, 2016). This reaction takes place in the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast. Types of photosynthesis vary depending on the environment the plant is in. The types include C3, C4 and CAMs. C3 Photosynthesis C3 plants make up around 85% of the plant species, including wheat, barley and most trees. C3 plants have a disadvantage when the climate is arid, because useless photorespiration intervenes during the normal process of light capturing and transfer to ATP. Photorespiration fixes oxygen instead of CO2 to bind with rubisco when the concentration of CO2 drops too low inside of the cell (Georgia State University, 2016).

C4 Photosynthesis

C4 photosynthesis takes place in the mesophyll cell walls. CO2 is still fixed in the process, and is then pushed across the membrane to become a molecule of CO2 and a carbon-3 compound. Next, the CO2 goes through the Calvin cycle and produces 2 molecules of G3P. G3P is then converted into sugar (Georgia State University, 2016). Photorespiration Photorespiration is a useless process to plant life, and in fact, wastes molecules of nutrients that are important to plant growth and photosynthesis. In the process of photosynthesis, Rubisco is used to help turn the Calvin cycle, and make the fixing of CO2 possible. Rubisco, otherwise known as RuBP, is a flirtatious enzyme that sometimes binds with O2 instead of CO2, it is supposed to. This causes the plant to use precious molecules and waste them (Georgia State University, 2016). Seed germination To begin, germinating seeds are seeds that have not yet formed leaves or began to photosynthesize. Germinated peas and corn were used in this experiment, and each only had small sprouts. Seeds can be germinated in a few different ways, which can include the paper towel method, the submersion method, and the Rockwool method. Each produces the same form of germinated seeds, while the methods are slightly different. The paper towel method was used to germinate the seeds used in this experiment.

Paper Towel germination method Begin with a damp paper towel, and then arrange seeds in a spread-out fashion. Fold the paper towel back over the seeds, and place a cover over the seeds. There does not have to be a heat source, but the seeds will germinate faster if there is. If a heat source is available, place it under the container at 70-80°F (Full Bloom Hydroponics, 2018). Cellular Respiration The basic way of explaining cellular respiration is to note that carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) are taken from sugar (C6H12O6) and during that process, ATP is created. ATP is then used to do all of the metabolic work in the cell (IUPUI Department of Biology, 2004). Cellular respiration takes place in mitochondria, and consists of processes called glycolysis, citric acid cycle, the electron transport chain, and oxidative phosphorylation. Glycolysis, which takes glucose and creates two molecules of pyruvic acid, results in two ATP molecules. Pyruvate then becomes Acetyl CoA, which is an enzyme that delivers the acetyl group to the next step, known as the citric acid cycle.

The citric acid cycle takes place in the mitochondrial matrix, and results in the overall production of four ATP and NADH. NADH (reduced form of NADPH) carries electrons to the next step, known as the electron transport chain. The electron transport chain is a chain of several Hydrogen gradients that result in the reduction of charge of electrons, which can be compared to a staircase. If an electron dropped a step lower on the stairs every time it moved, energy would be removed and eventually the electron would stop once its energy was too low. This is what happens when electrons enter the ETC, and at the end of the chain, oxygen accepts the electrons and then the molecules are converted into ATP through chemiosmosis (changing ADP and inorganic phosphate groups to ATP). The electron transport chain takes place in the cristae of the mitochondria. Hypothesis It was hypothesized that C3 seeds would respire more than C4 seeds in the preferred environment of 10°C, and that C4 plants would respire more than C3 plants in their preferred environments of 40°C. I predicted that C3 seeds would consume more oxygen (O2) in the 10°C environment than C4 seeds, and that C4 seeds would consume more O2 than C3 seeds in the 40°C environment.

The importance of this topic is heavily researched in science today because of climate change and the deterioration of the environment. It is relevant to connect this to climate change because if its growing epidemic. Configuring data in this experiment consisted of observing and measuring the amount of oxygen respired in the pipets and then determining exactly what that data meant in relevance to the group hypothesis. The data was skewed to the right when depicted as a histogram. The data were continuous, did not depend on each other, and were two different subjects, which meant that it is appropriate to use a non-paired t-test in order to correctly represent the values. Methods Description of procedure This experiment was to determine how the independent variables of C3 and C4 photosynthesis affect the dependent variable, the amount of respiration in the corresponding plants, peas (C3) and corn (C4). The amount of oxygen being respired is the dependent variable, and measured in mL, as it is the amount of water that enters the pipet of the respirometer. The seeds of peas and corn were the experimental groups.

In this experiment, the temperature of the water bath the seeds were placed in (°C), the amount of the seeds and beads in the respirometers (ten corn seeds, equal volume of pea seeds), the length of time the respirometers are left in the water (10 minutes), and the amount of time between trials were controlled by the group. Materials To prepare the ten respirometers for the experiment, the group tore an absorbent cotton ball in half and placed one half in the bottom of the ten respirometers, then added two milliliters (mL) of potassium hydroxide at 15% concentration by pipet on top of the cotton absorbent ball. A full non-absorbent cotton ball was placed on top of the contents. The cotton was completely covering the bottom half of the respirometer so no potassium hydroxide could leak farther into the respirometer. We then placed 10 corn seeds in four respirometers, an equal volume of pea seeds in four other respirometers, and an equal volume of beads in two respirometers, which served as the control group. After, the respirometers were sealed with rubber stoppers that held the pipets. Four liters (L) of water was heated in a boiling water bath to around 60°C, but ice was placed in the water bath to cool it to 40° C.

The group poured two L of the water into a tray. In a separate beaker, one person measured two L of 10° C water and poured it into a separate tray. The trays were halfway filled with water. Experimental setup Experimental setup consisted of two respirometers that held C3 seeds (peas) in 10° C water bath, two respirometers that held the C4 seeds (corn) in the 10° C water bath, and a single respirometer that held red beads, which was the control group for both water baths. The same set up applied to the other water bath, which was set at 40°C. A model similar to the respirometer used in the experiment is pictured to the right of this paragraph as Figure 1 (StudyLib, 2018). The respirometers were placed in the water baths, not completely submerged for three minutes to equilibrate. Calculating results The group recorded the data by observing how much oxygen was respired in the pipet which is represented by how much water is sucked into the pipet. This appeared to be a large number, but after double-checking our measurements, the group found that the respirometer pipet needed to be read in tenths of a millimeter. The same steps were repeated for five more respirometers in the 40° C water bath. The data was recorded in mL, and entered into the corresponding row in the data table. Two trials were completed to ensure the data was not spontaneous.

Conclusion

Overall, the group discovered that the hypothesis was incorrect and not supported after further exploration of what photosynthesis is. It is important to realize that seeds were tested in different temperatures, however, that does not mean only tested temperatures were able to yield the same or similar results. Although the difference between seed types respiration was very small, seeds and plants do respire more in warmer temperatures.

Photosynthesis: the Spinach Disks

The spinach discs were tested in different conditions where the number floating is what is observed. The number of floating discs is dependent on whether or not photosynthesis occurred in the discs. The different conditions or solutions tested all had unique effects on the photosynthetic rate. It is known that the presence of CO2 and light promote photosynthesis, which yields an increase of O2 as a product. The higher the production of the gases, the more that will be trapped in the mesophyll, or spongy layer, of the cell, which makes the spinach discs less dense than the water causing them to float to the top of the solution. Our experimental design was set up in order to indirectly measure the rate of photosynthesis by counting the number of discs floating that is a result of oxygen gas being released which is a byproduct of photosynthesis.

CO2 has an imperative role in the dark reactions of photosynthesis. Leaves take in CO2 through the stomata (pores at the bottom of the leaves) and introduce it into the Calvin Cycle. Without CO2 Calvin Cycle cannot run and therefore cannot produce sugar (Campbell, Reece 193-195). In our experiment, one the control cups was without the addition of CO2 and was supposed to be used as a control to show that no discs floated or no photosynthesis occurred in the absence of CO2 which would reinforce the necessity we know it is. However we observed that there were discs rising in this cup and at the end of the time period there were 4 when we knew there should be 0 like in our control with no light. This result is due to human error in the experiment. There are two possibilities for this error which are that we did not completely suction the air out of all the discs or that the same syringe was used for this cup as our other two control cups which had the CO2 in the solution. Either one of these errors could have led to these skewed and incorrect results.

Since there was a mistake made with one cup, we cannot trust the validity of the results from our other cups making our experiment invalid. However, if our experimental controls had worked we still would expect the more acidic environments to be better suited for photosynthesis to occur. We can see that by 25 minutes all 10 of the discs had risen in our two acidic solutions and only 7 in the solution that contains CO2 and light which functions as the baseline control and this suggests our hypothesis was correct and that lowering the pH increases photosynthetic rate. However this is very preliminary and subject to change as one of our controls failed and we need to repeat the experiment to validate results. If the trend we see here continued in another trial of this experiment, our hypothesis could then be proved correct.

During the light reactions, the electrons in the photosystems need to capture light energy with the primary electron acceptor. When an electron is captured in photosystem II, the electron transport chain begins and results in the production of ATP. When an electron is then taken in by photosystem I, it is transferred to a NADP molecule and produces NADPH. Both ATP and NADPH are required in the dark reactions of photosynthesis and without them the Calvin Cycle cannot synthesize sugar. Thus, light is needed in to carry out the light and dark reactions, and in the absence of light, photosynthesis cannot occur. This is the reason the cup not exposed to any light had no discs floating for the entire time.

The level of acidity refers to the relative concentration of H+ ions in a solution: the stronger the acid, the higher the concentration of H+ ions is and the lower the pH. The stronger and weak acids provide more H+ ions to the solution than any of the controls that have a more basic pH. H+ ions have an imperative role in producing ATP that will be consumed in the Calvin Cycle. This ATP is produced by chemiosmosis that is run by the proton-motive force that is formed by the electron transport chain between photosystem II and photosystem I. After the primary acceptor in photosystem II captures an electron, it transfers it to the electron transport chain. As the electron proceeds toward the most electronegative molecule, it passes from one molecule to another; the electron reduces and oxidizes each molecule as it continues. When the electron is transferred to a more electronegative molecule, energy is released. This energy that is freed is then converted into the proton-motive force that increases with a higher concentration of H+ ions.

The energy released in the electron transport causes the H+ ions to rush inside the thylakoid space creating a H+ ion concentration gradient. The H+ ions accumulated in the thylakoid space then start passing through ATP synthase because of the tendency to move from a more concentrated solution to a less concentrated one. When it passes through ATP synthase, ATP is produced that is going to participate in the Calvin Cycle. An acidic solution, provides more H+ ions to the surrounding of the leaf discs which can help the leaves take in more H+ ions through the stomata than the leaves in the basic solution due to availability. This allows the H+ ion concentration in the thylakoid space to increase more rapidly and can drive the rush of H+ ions through the ATP synthase can produce more ATP faster. In other words, the H+ ions in the surrounding solution contribute to increasing the rate of photosynthesis. If our experiment was valid, the results would support the notion of an increased H+ ion concentration, or lower pH, increasing the rate of photosynthesis and would yield more discs floating in the cups with acidic solutions than in the control cups.

Hydrochloric acid and sodium bicarbonate (base) interaction results with the end products of CO2 (carbon dioxide), H2O(water), and NaCl (table salt) as the equation below shows.

2 HCl (aq) + NaHCO3 (aq), 2 NaCl(aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l)

This reaction provides more CO2 in addition to the CO2 that is already provided by the sodium bicarbonate (New Media Press). Since a higher concentration of CO2 would increase the rate of photosynthesis, leaves surrounded with the mixture of HCl and NaHCO3 would have a higher rate of photosynthesis. Since the addition of If our experiment was valid, we would expect a higher rate of photosynthesis in the cups with HCl acid.

However assuming that higher acidic environments always increase photosynthetic rate is a limited and false way of looking at the results. If our experiment was valid, then we could trust our recordations that there was a higher rate of photosynthesis in the cup with the weak acid than the cup with the strong acid. Though acids provide a higher concentration of H+ ions and proportionally increase photosynthetic rate, they also decrease it simultaneously. The explanation to this phenomenon lies on the H+ ion inhibition of the light reactions. According to a study made by Teena Tongra and many other researchers, increased pH value inhibits the electron donor and recipient sites of the photosystem II. An inhibition at the beginning of the photosystem process reflects to the rest of photosynthesis and decreases the rate of photosynthesis. If our experiment was valid, the inhibition of the photosystem II would explain the lower rate of photosynthesis that we recorded in the cup with the stronger acid (Tongra).

If the control group that had failed worked, meaning our experiment would have not failed, we would have expected a denaturation of the enzymes involved in photosynthesis due to high acidity. The pH of the stroma in chloroplasts is around 8. Many proteins are involved during photosynthesis: rubisco is one of the most prominent enzymes that take role in photosynthesis. However, every protein has an optimal pH value in which they can function and for the enzymes functioning during photosynthesis, this values is around 8. Rubisco's optimal pH is between 7.8 and 8. As the pH increases, the enzyme will change structurally and won't be able to perform its function, which is binding to CO2 in carbon fixation. The dysfunctionment of rubisco will prevent sugar synthesis because CO2 will not be able to enter the Calvin Cycle. Many other proteins will undergo the same problem if the pH deviates from their optimal pH values. For this reason, if our experiment was valid, it would support the fact that acids denature enzymes and lower the rate of photosynthesis. Because a more acidic solution deviates more from the optimal pH of the enzymes that function in the chloroplast (around pH 8), the photosynthesis rate in the cup with a pH value of 4 would have been shown to be less than that of the cap with a pH of 6, this is something we cannot conclude because of the human error that occured.

Research done by Sware Semesi, Juma Kangwe, and Mats  is titled, Alterations in seawater pH and CO2 affect calcification and photosynthesis in the tropical coralline alga, Hydrolithon sp. (Rhodophyta). The experiment was began by obtaining the Hydrolithon sp., an algae, which were collected in Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar. The algae were contained in a 5L transparent plastic container and bubbled with air for 2 weeks prior to experimentation. The experimental conditions were set at different pH values. The pH values were then investigated in terms of their photosynthesis and calcification activities.

The experiment was repeated 4 times at each pH value. The photosynthetic and calcification rates were measured in a temperature-controlled 300mL chamber where O2 and the pH values were kept track of continuously using an O2 electrode. This research showed that Hydrolithon sp., an algae found growing in seagrass beds in shallow lagoons had a decrease in photosynthetic rate when the pH was raised to the higher pHs of the 7 pHs tested, making it more basic. They stated that when the pH was above 8.6 the algae had a higher photosynthetic rate. This evidence supports that lowering pH, making the solution more acidic, will cause a higher photosynthetic rate. This evidence showed that the raising of pH decreased the photosynthetic rate (Semesi). We hoped that this evidence would support our findings in the experiment we conducted, but since one of the control groups failed, we can not say that this evidence supports our findings. However, this evidence does support our hypothesis.

Research done by An Long, Jiang Zhang, Lin-Tong Yang, Xin Ye, Ning-Wei Lai, Ling-Ling Tan, Dan Lin, and Li-Song Chen is titled, Effects of Low pH on Photosynthesis, Related Physiological Parameters, and Nutrient Profiles of Citrus. The experiment observed what low pH does to affect Xuegan (Citrus sinesis) and Sour pummelo (Citrus grandis) seeds. They looked at many factors to see how the lower pH would influence the photosynthesis and how the lower pH would lower CO2 assimilation. The experiment was set up at a University called Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in Fuzhou, China. Two seeds, Xuegan (Citrus sinesis) and Sour pummelo (Citrus grandis), were grown in plastic trays and then later the seeds with single stems were put into six pots, two seeds in each pot. Then they were each given a nutrient solution pH of 2.5, 3, 4, 5, or 6. There were forty seeds looked at. It is said in this experiment that pH 5 was considered the control group because the growth of the seeds and other growth factors will hit the maximum at a pH of 5. If our experiment hadn't failed, this would support our hypothesis because it shows how a lower pH is favored and used as the stable pH for optimal growth, which in turn gives optimal photosynthetic rate.

After many different measurements were taken of the seeds, it was shown that a pH of 5 had the most optimal growth. It was also shown that a pH of 4 did not change the growth of the seeds. The pHs of 2.5 and 3 hurt the growth of the seeds more, with 2.5 hindering the growth the most. This experiment showed how the nutrient solution with a pH of 5, an acidic pH, had optimal growth compared to its very acidic counterparts (Long). If our experiment hadn't failed, it could have supported the results, those of which are invalid. This experiment showed that a pH of 5 and 4, which are around the pH values we used for our experiment, provided optimal seed growth and unchanged seed growth, not hindering the growth. It also showed that when the solution becomes too acidic it hinders the growth as well, something that we hoped to be concluded in this experiment, but we cannot conclude this because our experiment failed. These two experiments proved what we hoped would be the result of our experiment, but since one control group failed, the results are invalid.

Abstract

To test the effects a set wavelength and different variations of light intensities had on the rate of photosynthesis, isolated thylakoids from Spinach leaves (Spinacia oleracea) were placed under different light conditions. These conditions consisted of no light, white light, green light and red light. Under each condition, the change in transmittance of a mixture, containing thylakoids and 2, 6-dichlorophenol-indophenol (DPIP), was measured using a spectrophotometer, in order to track to rate of photosynthesis. Compared to the effects of no light on the rate of photosynthesis, the thylakoids that were exposed to a white light condition experienced an elevated rate of photosynthesis. While comparing the exposure to green and red-light conditions, the rate of photosynthesis was measured to be much more elevated in that of the red-light condition. This experiment has yielded that exposure to white light and red-light conditions hold a greater effect on the rate of photosynthesis in thylakoids than that of no-light and green-light conditions. This conclusion drawn from the experiment may be useful for individuals and/or systems that wish to speed up the rate of photosynthesis, by producing ATP and NADPH in excited states, in many different forms of plant life. Therefore, replacing the oxygen being used in processes like respiration and combustion.

Introduction

To determine under which light condition, no light or white light and green light or red light, the rate of photosynthesis in thylakoids was the most elevated, this experiment took light conditions and exposed isolated thylakoids from Spinach leaves to the intensities. DPIP, a blue dye, was used to replace NADPH in the light reactions of this experiment. When reduced the dye turns from blue to colorless. Therefore, since DPIP replaces NADPH, it will turn from blue to colorless. The samples were exposed to the various light conditions and then measured for color change and transmittance using a spectrophotometer, thus, allowing the rate of photosynthesis to be tracked. Due to some wavelengths of light being absorbed at higher rates than others, the hypothesis for this experiment was that the effects of white light conditions on thylakoids will allow the rate of photosynthesis to occur at a faster rate than that of the rate of photosynthesis with a no light condition in thylakoids. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that the effects of red-light conditions will allow the rate of photosynthesis to be at a much faster rate than that of thylakoids exposed to a green-light condition. This is due to the absorption of light in the green portion of the visual spectrum.

Methods

Within this study, there were 5 cuvettes tested. Before beginning, the spectrophotometer was set to measure absorption at a wavelength of 610nm. This was due to the fact that DPIP is a deep blue color and should absorb red wavelengths. In order to calibrate the spectrophotometer, a cuvette was filled to the top with deionized water. Wiping any residue off the outside of the cuvette, the cuvette was placed in the holder with the arrow facing the light source. With a closed lid, the 0.00 button was pressed, and the screen flashed 100.0 when successfully calibrated.

When preparing the materials and reagents for the experiment, a small flask, labeled DPIP, was filled with 5mL of pH 7 buffer, 15mL of deionized water and 5mL of 0.01% DPIP stock, then mixed by swirling the contents. Cuvettes, labeled 1 through 5, were wiped of any residue and 5 1.2 cm X 1.2cm squares were cut out of the Parafilm strip. To continue the experiment, 3mL of the DPIP solution was added to cuvette 1, filling it to the top line. Then, a 1.2 cm X 1.2 cm square of Parafilm was pressed to the top of the cuvette to prevent spills. The cuvette was wiped of any residue and placed into the holder of the spectrophotometer to measure the transmittance (%T). This value was displayed on the screen and was recorded in the first row of Table 1 (Time 0) for all 5 treatments. This cuvette (1) contained all experimental components except thylakoids and represents %T value of the zero-time point for all samples and was placed aside in a safe place.

With a stopwatch ready, 10 drops of thylakoid suspension were added to the DPIP flask and mixed by swirling. Moving quickly, 3 mL of the DPIP/thylakoid mixture was pipetted into Cuvette 2, 3, 4 and 5, filling them to the top line. Squares of Parafilm were then pressed to the top of each. Each cuvette was then placed on a rack along with Cuvette 1 and applied the appropriate treatments. Cuvette 2 was covered with a black paper sleeve, Cuvette 3 was not covered at all, Cuvette 4 was covered with a green filter sleeve and Cuvette 5 was covered with a red filter sleeve. Then, quickly, the rack of cuvettes was placed 8-10 inches in front of a lamp that was placed behind a glass container full of water. This water acts as a barrier to disperse the light rays from the bulb, allowing the light to be spread about and not in intense rays that could harm the samples.

Starting the stopwatch, the transmittance was measured in each sample every 5 minutes for 30 minuets. This was done by wiping the cuvette of any residue and placing it inside the spectrophotometer holder and closing the lid. With each measurement, the %T was recorded in a table. Then, once finished, the contents of the test tubes were dumped into a hazardous waste jug labeled DPIP, then rinsed with deionized water in the sink and dried by placing upside down on towel. The lamp was cut off and the experiment was finished. Information collected for each light exposure was that of % transmittance along with the time in which it was measured in 5-minute intervals.

Fracking our Health

When it comes to any type of practice, there are bound to be different types of consequences that follow.  It is not any different when it applies to hydraulic fracturing, or hydrofracking.  Hydrofracking has shown to be quite the productive form of obtaining natural gas, while also showing that it is decreasing CO2, or carbon dioxide emissions.  From a Pennsylvania standpoint, hydrofracking came out of nowhere, but with the Marcellus shale being found, natural gas has become quite abundant. Marcellus shale is the rock that is found deep in the earth that, when fractured, releases the natural gas.  There is so much natural gas that other states are honing in on using it as well, by importing from Pennsylvania.  Hydrofracking sounds like it could be the most reliable and cheapest energy source, while also minimizing damage to the environment.  However, while there are plenty of benefits to hydrofracking, there are also many downsides to the practice I do not entirely agree with, mainly due to the potential damage that it can cause.

To fully understand why hydraulic fracturing is both good and bad, one must understand what hydrofracking actually is.  Hydrofracking is the practice of drilling a well deep into the ground, and extracting the natural gas found inside of Marcellus shale rocks.  To extract the gas, the rocks are pumped with hundreds of thousands of gallons of mainly water, plus sand, hence the hydro in hydrofracking.  The rocks are fractured, releasing the gas, which is then extracted.  The Marcellus shale was first found in Washington County, Pennsylvania in 2003.  However, mass production did not actually begin until about 2005.  Since then, Pennsylvania, while once being primarily a coal state, is moving towards becoming a natural gas state, along with Texas.

Like any form of energy production, hydrofracking has its benefits.  With the energy source itself, natural gas, it is being found in vast amounts, which means that it is going to be cheaper than other forms of nonrenewable energy, such as oil and coal.  When it comes to the business aspect of hydrofracking, there is going to be a need for people to mine these wells, which means an increase in jobs.  Hydrofracking has seen a 67% rise in employment.  A study was conducted at Harvard which estimated that fracking generated roughly 2.7 million jobs in the last decade and will rise to around 3.5 million by 2035. Even with the ban on fracking inside the city's borders, the metropolitan area of Pittsburgh alone contains about half of all shale wells in Pennsylvania.  The state has actually given Allegheny County the Marcellus Legacy Funds' largest grants, such as giving Pittsburgh $802,990 in 2014 to help improve the city's water.  Pennsylvania also has a $20 billion investment for new gas plants. 

When it comes to energy sources, one main difficulty that is faced is imports, as in obtaining the source from other countries that have it in abundance.  Pennsylvania, along with Texas, is assisting the US in becoming an exporter of natural gas.  With natural gas, the US does not need to rely so heavily on imports as it does with other fossil fuels.  Finally, there is the environmental aspect of hydrofracking.  When coal is burned, it gives off CO2, along with other harmful chemicals, such as mercury and sulfur dioxide, which contribute to the greenhouse effect.  Mining for coal is also a hazard in and of itself, especially with practices such as mountaintop removal and underground mining, which both cause heavy pollution of the nearby water, land, and air, as well as destroying the land and water sources.  However, even though burning natural gas still gives off large amounts CO2, it still gives off less than oil or coal according the Energy Information Administration (EIA), making it the better choice for the atmosphere.  Burning natural gas is a much better alternative energy source than burning fossil fuels, but there plenty of downsides to hydrofracking.

Hydrofracking, while being cheaper and more beneficial from a business standpoint, has its fair share if cons that follow with it.  Fracking does create more jobs, but they are mostly temporary.  Companies have even gone bankrupt because the prices and demand for oil and gas are constantly fluctuating.  Burning natural gas is still giving off CO2, even though it is in a smaller amount, which means that it is still contributing to the greenhouse effect.  Another big issue with hydrofracking is the wastewater, since it is found to contain a toxic level of radium, due to the radioactivity found near the wells.  There have also been high levels of manganese and iron found in the wastewater.  Even the water located near fracking operations is not safe, since faulty equipment or the spilling of wastewater can contaminate it.  The actual drilling and mining of the wells is not such a clean, quiet practice either.  As the number of gas wells rise in a community, so do the hospitalization rates.  People are suffering from health issues, such as fatigue, nausea, and even elevated risks of cancer due to fracking operations, which also raise the benzene levels in the air.  The silica sand used in fracking has caused silicosis and lung disease.  There has been evidence shown that the drilling from hydrofracking has increased the chances of earthquakes occurring. 

From 2001 to 2011, there was large spike in the number of earthquakes in the middle of the country, which were thought to be from fracking.  Animals are also put at risk with fracking, since their environments are surrounded by chemicals. However, fracking does not just pollute the area with oil and gas chemicals. Workers and citizens are also exposed to the loud noises produced by the fracking operations. Along with the noise, people are also exposed to continuous light, which can be very harmful at night. Exposure to both of these pollutants have shown the cause serious health effects, such as breast cancer and cardiovascular disease. The loud drilling is also a large contributor to stress and anxiety, since these sites are so close to homes, schools, and workplaces. The noise and light pollution also affect the wildlife surrounding the area.  The infrastructure has been a cause for concern as well.  There are large assortments of parts, such as pipes, valves, compressors, etc. However, the infrastructure has caused gas leaks, spills, and even explosions. A solution in place for these pollutants is to have setback distances, so that people and animals are not so close the operations. Unfortunately, we might require more solutions than just setback distances if we are to keep people safe and calm. 

When it all boils down, I do not agree with the practice of hydrofracking.  I think that, even though it is a better form of obtaining energy, there are still too many health and safety risks that come with the practice.  If I had fracking operations being conducted near my house, I would have to deal with potential radiation in the air or in my drinking water, the noise from the trucks and drilling, and the constant light when I am trying to sleep.  The toll that fracking could take on my health would not be worth any sum of money.  I would not be able to sleep with operations taking place, which means I would be constantly fatigued.  I would also have to worry about the toxicity of the water, since that could potentially lead to a higher risk of cancer and many other health issues.  I think that what should be done by fracking businesses is either relying on a different energy source or putting regulations on hydrofracking.  These could consist of setback distances from populated areas, lessening the number of wells, or taking more precautions about the noise, water, air, etc.  According to energy lawyer Kathy Condo, What's out there may carry weight in the court of public opinion but isn't yet solid enough for the court of law.  The data taken is too inconsistent, since the air levels are always changing with the amount of chemicals, even if they are not near fracking operations.  The toxicity levels in the air vary hourly regardless of where they are located.  There are some studies that can potentially link birth defects and fracking, but they are inconclusive.  The business of fracking has the burden of proof in this situation, since there are facts that prove that hydrofracking is safer than burning fossil fuels, as well as supplying jobs.  In 2016, after two dozen studies, the Environmental Protection Agency concluded that hydrofracking is unlikely to damage groundwater. 

Also, the U.S. Geological Survey stated that the earthquakes are from wastewater injection, not hydrofracking.  The USGS even stated that earthquakes from hydrofracking are too small to feel and are very rare. If we continue to allow the practice of hydrofracking, we will be utilizing a cleaner and cheaper energy source than oil or gas, slowing down the greenhouse effect, and supplying workers with, albeit temporary, jobs.  Unfortunately, we will still be putting the workers, along with nearby citizens and wildlife, in harm's way.  This is due to the many potential dangers that come with hydrofracking.  If hydrofracking operations are to continue, there must be stricter regulations regarding the equipment, water disposal, pollution, etc.  If we completely get rid of hydrofracking, we will either have to continue burning fossil fuels, which is quite harmful to the planet, or utilize a safer alternative energy source, such as solar power or wind power.  While hydrofracking for natural gas is less harmful than burning fossil fuels, extra measures must be taken in order to ensure the safety of the people, wildlife, and the environment.

It discusses how people lived before the lightbulb spending most of their days outside receiving enough sunlight and how the creation of the light bulb has caused more time spent inside. The main focus is how so many people used artificial light at night or ALAN for short. 99% of the people in the US and Europe are exposed to ALAN. Artificial light at night isn't just affecting humans but rather the environment around them. The author mentions various studies the artificial light had effects reproduction, communication and habitats of nocturnal animal species.

However, ALAN isn't just affecting fauna, but flora too. There have been documented issues with trees adjusting to season variations. This has to do with ALAN stimulating photosynthesis in plants when it does not normally occur. The growth, development, and reproduction of plants has been effected as these plants need certain wavelengths, duration, and intensity of light. The article then begins to discuss the effects on humans. Artificial mostly has a large impact on circadian systems and physiological functions. The circadian systems is basically summed up as the systems that manages the sleep and awake cycle. The author also bring up studies showing higher risk of certain cancers, obesity, diabetes, and depression. However, it is not all doom and gloom. The author brings up the benefits such as that artificial light has proven to work in light therapy for seasonal affective disorder.

The third and final main topic of the article is the reduction of star visibility in the night sky. ALAN is around four times greater than illumination from a starry night sky. Light pollution from a variety of sources such as street lamps, billboards, etc used different wavelengths of light than natural light sources and begin to block out the sky. This allows us to see less and less and you must travel far from the cities to actually see the true beauty of the night sky with the naked eye.

The article begins to then detail the methods it used for each step of the experiment. Most importantly in photosynthesis it notes the need for a clear definition of wavelength and intensity of light to be used. Each species of plant had a variety of different action spectrum. Action spectrum is a graph of the rate physiological activity when under certain wavelengths. There are a variety of different chlorophyll structures of molecules that are more sensitive to different wavelengths. The two main focuses of the article Chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b are mostly found in vegetables and plants. They absorb more efficiently the blue and red part of the spectrum. Accessory pigments such as carotenes can also take part in photosynthesis which absorb blue light much greater than red. The author decides to choose a global action spectrum which is fit for an average vegetation type.

Critical Assessment

The main point of the article is proposing three new indices to characterize the lamp spectrum. The authors created the indices to allow for quick estimation of the possible impacts of certain lights on melatonin suppression, photosynthesis, and star visibility.

Pop Icons: how the Beatles Changed Music and the World

The Beatles were a worldwide phenomenon who inspired many -from the “flower children” to the Manson Family. Their quick popularity brought “Beatlemania” and the British Invasion into America. While their music was catchy and popular, it often reflected the time and events, mostly political, happening around the world. Across the Universe, directed by Julie Taymor and released in 2007, paints a picture of the period in which The Beatles’ songs made their prevalence and mirrors them with important events of the time. Across the Universe features thirty-four original Beatles’ compositions and utilizes them to drive the narrative of the movie. The music in Across the Universe is mainly diegetic music with the occasional extra-diegetic stylings. This movie smoothly translates through all of the different musical stages The Beatles went through, from cheesy love songs to acid trips, this movie paints them all. In this paper, I am going to analyze many songs portrayed in Across the Universe and explore their historical impact and importance for the narrative.

Across the Universe is a 1960s fictional love story set in a time of great cultural significance of free expression and a fight for societal freedom. It also shows the immense amount of pain and conflict during this time. The film was released in 2007 and stars actors like Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, and Dana Fuchs, with cameo appearances from Bono and McDerby 2Salma Hayek; all characters are named after Beatles’ songs. The story mainly follows Jude (Jim Sturgess), a man from Liverpool, England, who travels to America to find his estranged father. While there, he meets Max (Joe Anderson), a carefree student, who then introduces Jude to Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), Max’s sister. Jude and Max then drop Max’s ivy league life and move to New York City. In New York City, they make many new friends, including Sadie (Dana Fuchs, who is utilized to represent Janis Joplin), JoJo (Martin Luther McCoy, who represents Jimi Hendrix), and Prudence (T.V. Carpio). When Lucy moves to New York, a love story sparks between her and Jude. Their love story is a huge driving narrative of the film, along with Max’s time fighting in the Vietnam war. (Across the Universe)The opening of the film immediately begins with Jude sitting on a beach singing 'Girl'. The lyrics of “Girl” foreshadow to the “girl” -Lucy, who he will soon meet. Right after “Girl” is finished, “Helter Skelter” plays as the opening credit scene. The opening credits flashes all the main characters but plays special attention to the character of Lucy. A still frame of her face and beautiful blue eyes become staple imagery for the rest of the film. These two songs are from different Beatles’ eras but they intertwine to show the variations of The Beatles’ music. These songs act just like the next song that is portrayed. “Hold Me Tight” is a cheesy and catchy song that came from The Beatles’ early years.

The character of Lucy is introduced by her singing “Hold Me Tight” in the original catchy style, showing its original innocent and lighthearted pop sound. But the scene is then mirrored with a gritty underground rock sound with Jude’s then girlfriend rougher voice accompanying. This underground Liverpool scene hints to The Beatles’ origins, who began in the Liverpool underground music scene. A band playing the instrumentals for “Hold Me Tight” in the Liverpool scene are actually wearing one of the iconic Beatles’ looks McDerby 3of black turtlenecks and black leather jackets. This “Easter egg” in Across the Universe is a little homage to the movie’s source material. 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' is the first song of the movie that completely changes the style of the original Beatles’ version. The Beatles wrote and performed “I Want to Hold Your Hand” as a simple and upbeat love song. At the time this song came out, The Beatles were still seen as a “boy band” due to their simple lyrics and catchy tunes. It was not until years later that they were able to break this mold and widen their repertoire to the way we know now. In Across the Universe, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” is utilized to introduce an interesting new character, Prudence. Throughout the movie she is seen to be a very longing and adventurous character; she sings “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in the same way. The song is completely made her own, instead of a catchy tune, it becomes a ballad of unrequited love. Prudence’s desire for the love of a classmate and her acknowledgement of that not happening, draws her to pack up her small-town Ohio life and head for New York City.Both 'I've Just Seen a Face' sung by Jude, and “If I Fell” sung by Lucy, are both love sequences of the early Beatles’ campy love songs. “I’ve Just Seen a Face” tells Jude’s love at first sight moment with Lucy, visually told by lighthearted bowling imagery. This song illustrates the playful beginnings of love. “If I Fell” is sung a little later in the film and paints Lucy’s hesitations about falling in love. It is a quiet and passionate hope for love in a time of her uncertainty. Both songs are meaningful renditions of the original songs, making them more unique to the story portrayed.   The use of the song 'Let It Be' is the most striking and heartbreaking in the film. While the song is sung by a young boy thrown into the midst of the Detroit riots in 1967. The song is McDerby 4then finished by a gospel choir at the young boy’s funeral.

“Let it Be” is a song of hope in times of heartache and the scene portrayed is exactly that. The Detroit riots were some of the deadliest of that year, resulting in 43 deaths, 1,200 injuries, over 7,000 arrests (Moon) and brought immense loss and pain. But in the end, the Detroit riots and civil rights movement were fights for good and hope for a once criminalized people. By utilizing “Let it Be” for this scene, it showed the gravity of that harsh reality and a how there is a hope for a better tomorrow. 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)' is a loud and intimidating song that imitates sounds of the Vietnam War and the draft. The song begins with a deep and booming step sound as Maxx enters. Animations of Uncle Sam are shown reaching out for Max, speaking the famous “I Want You” phrase. As the young men are brought into eligibility analysis for the draft, they are met with a choregraphed sequence of robotic soldiers, which adds to the rough and strict atmosphere of the army. “I Want You” represents the quick ways young men were brought into war and how seemingly replaceable they were. “She’s So Heavy” displays these men carrying the Statue of Liberty through the Vietnam jungles, symbolizing the weight of America on their shoulders. The Vietnam War was a devastating war where many unprepared young men “fulfilled their patriotic duty” by fighting for America. The war resulted in over 58,000 casualties and 64% of the soldiers who fought were under the age of 21 (“The Lessons of the Vietnam War”). While the original Beatles song is commonly interpreted as a longing love song, and it is illustrated that way through Prudence at the end of the song, it also is interpreted the way that Across the Universe portrayed it in Max’s scene. The deep and prominent bass of the song plays a huge part in making the song sound more military than loving. McDerby 5'Dear Prudence' is the first glimpse into the acid phase of The Beatles’ music. It is marked by a dreamy sequence that eventually takes them to the first scene of anti-Vietnam war protests. This song and scene is perfectly transitioning the audience into the next parts of the narrative.

It hints to the shift of boy-bandish love songs to drug-induced musical creations, and it foreshadows to Lucy’s involvement in the anti-Vietnam war efforts. The musical transition is then confirmed with the next few songs: “Flying”, “Blue Jay Way”, and “I Am the Walrus”. These three songs are heavy versions of the original song, drawing the audience into a LSD trip, marked by fantastical visuals. “I Am the Walrus”, sung by Bono, introduces the character of Dr. Robert, which is a song and character by The Beatles. While the song “Dr. Robert” is never played, Dr. Robert is used to put a name to the leader of these LSD trips. Dr. Robert is an homage to the real LSD leader, Timothy Leary.  The cryptic phrase, “turn on, tune in, and drop out” defined the 1960s counterculture. This phrase was coined by a Harvard psychologist Timothy Leary, who was a leading figure in the research of psychedelic drugs. Leary and his research partner were both removed and banished form their positions, they still became kings of LSD and the human potential movement (“Timothy Leary”). Leary’s iconic phrase was a cultural expression for many drug induced decades, but it did not mean what many thought. It was common thought that the phrase “turn on, tune in, and drop out” meant to get stoned and drop all responsibilities. To Leary, “turn on, tune in, and drop out” means to turn on the communication with your inner self, tune into the events of the outside world, and to drop out of the ties that bind us to restrictive positions and beliefs (Greenfield). The events of time could not be ignored, and Leary was very aware of this in his speech.McDerby 6In the song, 'Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!', a slight play on Leary’s phrase, “Just tune in, turn off, drop out, drop in, switch off, switch on, and explode,” is prevalent in the visuals of this scene. This dizzying carnival scene with odd, spoken lyrics, paints the “hippie idea” of Leary’s teaching. The main characters abandon their responsibilities at home to continue their acid trip. As their acid trip ends, the main characters are seen laying in a wheat field, singing “Because'. To me, this song is the most beautiful rendition of The Beatle’s original music, it completely different from previous songs. While the original song is similar, Across the Universe’s multilayered harmonies make the song new and fresh.

As the characters end “Because”, their rise from the water is met with war scenes. As it transitions into war, the calm music of safety turns into clam music of uncertainty. Now the narrative begins to show conflict between the characters and their situations. It starts with 'Oh! Darling' which is marked by rough guitar riffs and incorrect vocalization. The dissonance of the song represents the uneasy clash between the characters. 'Strawberry Fields Forever' is a dark song sang by Jude and Max. The scene paints Vietnam war images that mirrors Jude’s artist angst. It is full of dark coloring with bright red strawberries, which act as grenades, explosions and blood. 'Revolution' signifies Jude’s anger and jealousy of Lucy’s anti-war efforts. Jude supports the cause, he wants to get Max back as much as Lucy does, but he sees the flaws in the organization, especially in the leadership. “Revolution” shows his breaking point. 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' brings a calm, yet troubled, feel into the narrative. It shows the time of unrest between the characters and America. It is emulated by Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination, a very dark time in the civil rights movement. These four songs illustrate The Beatles’ perspectives on the dark events of the time. McDerby 7'Across the Universe', the namesake for the film, is illuminated through a chaotic and harsh sequence of events. It is accompanied and infused through “Helter Skelter”, a more passionate song of distress. It begins with a depressed Jude, hoping for a better tomorrow, with Lucy.

He is traveling to an anti-Vietnam protest to try to find Lucy. “Across the Universe” is a calm under the chaotic 'Helter Skelter' and is one of the few scenes of extra-diegetic music. “Across the Universe” is Jude’s calm tune of outside view where he only wants Lucy, matched with the hard rock of “Helter Skelter” played for the protestors being arrested. The songs are very dissonant with a mixing of songs in the forefront showing the distress of the protest. The songs then turn into a calm orchestral tune, where Max is seen amid a battle, where gunshots and explosions are heard. The music then becomes peaceful and quiet, shooting stops and “Across the Universe” is heard again. Calm images of water and women falling in are shown, signifying death of the Vietnamese people and end of the Vietnam War. While these two songs are from quite different Beatles’ eras, they were utilized to match the feelings of the war and its effects on the American people. 'Happiness Is a Warm Gun' perfectly illustrates the damages of the Vietnam War on the young men who served. In the scene, these men are given a “happiness” drug by Salma Hayek’s character(s). The lyrics of “Happiness is a Warm Gun” can be interpreted in many ways and all of those are implied in this scene. Many Vietnam veterans, over 30% (Robins), suffer from PTSD and more likely to commit suicide than civilians. “Happiness is a Warm Gun” can imply that the only happiness that could be brought to the soldiers was one less enemy, meaning a sooner end of the war. It also could be that the “warm gun” represents the drug use of the soldiers and veterans, and that happiness is only after they use drugs.

Heroin was very readily available in Vietnam, meaning most soldiers were exposed and even used heroin during the war (Robins). In a study done in 1977, published for Problems of Drug Dependence, found that “Eighty-five percent of the men told us that they had been offered heroin while they were there—often quite soon after their arrival…Thirty-five percent of Army enlisted men actually tried heroin while in Vietnam, and 19% became addicted to it.” Another “warm gun” was morphine, routinely given to the veterans when they returned home. “Happiness is a Warm Gun” epitomizes the backhanded benefits of how the veterans were treated after the war.From pain and worry between all the characters, 'Don't Let Me Down' and 'All You Need Is Love' are the last few songs of the movie and show the characters all reunited together once again. Both songs hints back to The Beatles’ earlier music of love and positivity and are songs of love between two of the movie’s main couples. Jude sings “All You Need is Love” in the hope of finding and reconnecting with Lucy. This love scene and the end of the movie is concluded with the two characters seeing each other from separate roofs, even though they are not physically close, it is implied that their love begins again. In this paper, I did a musical analysis of many songs portrayed in the film Across the Universe. This film visually paints the many styles of The Beatles’ music. I could discuss much more, to me it is a visual and musical joyride. Even though Across the Universe was met with mixed critical and audience reviews, it will always be a top movie for me. As a person who grew up on The Beatles’ music, this movie allows me to see the whimsy and beauty that their music portrays.

What is OCD and how is it Recognized?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder, also known as OCD, can be described as an obsession that a person cannot stop thinking about, even though they know they are unreasonable, they are still affected by them (Vidich, 1968, p. 245). An obsession is a constant, invasive thought or idea that causes concern and compulsion is a repetitive behavior that a person feels the need to perform in order to reduce anxiety. This disorder causes significant distress and interference in the person's daily life (Griggs, 2017, p. 439-440). Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a general category, but it in itself is a very large spectrum. There are many different types of OCD and can be determined by observing the person's behaviors associated with obsessive-compulsiveness (Vidich, 1968, p. 246).

A person with obsessive-compulsive disorder will often times repeat thoughts or behaviors over and over again. Some common symptoms of OCD include an extreme fear of germs, destructive thoughts towards themselves or to others, or even having things in a symmetrical, organized, and patterned manner. Some people with obsessive-compulsive disorder even have the urge to clean things or wash their hands excessively, order things in a special way, compulsive counting, or even frequently checking things like making sure you locked the door or unplugging things to prevent an unwanted result (The National Institute of Mental Health, 2016).

Causes

Researchers trying to find the root cause of OCD have observed that certain areas of the brain work differently in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Some have found that there are communication errors between the different parts of the brain including the orbitofrontal cortex, the striatum, and the thalamus. Some research even suggests that there could be irregularity in neurotransmitter systems, involving chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate. These chemicals are responsible for sending messages throughout the brain (Beyond OCD). Also, people who have experienced abuse during childhood are at an increased risk for developing obsessive-compulsive disorder. In some cases, children may develop OCD following a streptococcal infection. There is still not a definitive cause of OCD (The National Institute of Mental Health) .

Effects

Obsessive-compulsive disorder can have negative effects on the person diagnosed with the disorder and the people around them. The disorder can worsen without correct treatment. The person may develop wounds on the skin from irritable scratching or over washing and scrubbing. The person could have trouble maintaining and exceeding in their professional, academic, or social life. They could begin to isolate themselves from others close to them due to the fear of spreading germs or because they are too consumed in their own thoughts to think about interactions with others. They may start to have recurring suicidal thoughts or tendencies due to OCD. Some people may even turn to alcohol or illegal drugs for relaxation, resulting in substance abuse. The obsession can take up a big portion of the person's day which can interfere with their family and social life. The person may begin to have more conflicts with friends and family and may even lose the relationship as a whole. Some family members may blame the person with OCD for their obsessive behaviors, which in turn can anger the person with OCD. Due to this intense anger, the person with obsessive-compulsive disorder may try to inflict pain onto others that are close to them (Belmont Behavioral Hospital).

Treatments

OCD is usually treated with medications, psychotherapy, or both. Some antidepressant medications can inhibit serotonin reuptake in the neurotransmitters, reducing the symptoms of the disorder. If symptoms do not improve with these types of medicines, some doctors will prescribe antipsychotic medications. These medications can help the person cope with the symptoms, but will not permanently relieve the effects of OCD. Psychotherapy is another alternative to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder. Research shows that certain types of psychotherapy, including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and other related therapies can be as effective as medication for many individuals (The National Institute of Mental Health). CBT can help the patient become aware of their obsessive or compulsive thoughts so that they can respond to them in an efficient way. Researchers also found that Exposure and Response Prevention can help reduce compulsive behaviors, even in people who did not respond well to serotonin-inhibiting medication. Some patients choose to try medications first and then result to psychological therapy. There is still research being done to determine more alternatives to treatment for people with OCD. At the moment, it is unclear which treatment is the best. Scientists believe that it depends on how extreme the patient has the disorder and the location of the brain affected by OCD (The National Institute of Mental Health).

Statistics

OCD was once believed to be a rare disorder, but recent years have shown that more people may have OCD than previously estimated. According to a research study done by The American Psychiatric Association, about three million people of the United States population are diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder every year. It was also found that women are at a higher risk of developing OCD, but the disorder is more common in men during childhood ages. People who suffer from OCD also tend to struggle with anxiety disorders, too. About 76% of people with obsessive-compulsive disorder are also diagnosed with anxiety as well (Belmont Behavioral Hospital).

  • Collaborative through partnering with other sectors
  • Coordinated through agreements

However the priority data sources for NCDs surveillance involves: vital registries, disease registries, on-going periodical health surveys, administrative data and sentinel surveillance. The general surveillance system can be categorised boadly as follows:

Other obstacles on surveillance are low priority on NCD due to low political will to address the situation and unenthusiastic system participants. However, this obstacles can be minimised through proper planning and developing positive attitude towards surveillance at it helps in disease control.

This was evident as I engaged in talks throughout the session as I loved not only listening to people, but also helping them to solve their problems.

  • Different culture between therapist and client is important to understand. When I become a therapist, I need to educate myself about my client's culture.
  • A client can catch feelings when the therapist just wants to listen to them because he wants to finish his assignment or he really want to help and understand.
  • As a therapist I need to make the client feel how I care about him As a result, it will make the client open and talk.
  • This experience makes me aware of that clients understand the body language and they will react based on therapist's body language.

In class last week, we discussed how the role of traditional gender stereotyping is a main theme that is present in all fairy tales in one way or another. Many fairy tales focus on a narrative of romance and marriage with some sort of social conflict in between. Ella Enchanted takes on a different gender role as it places the main character Ella as the lead character of the story.

At the beginning of the story, Ella is born and is visited by the fairy Lucinda. Lucinda gives Ella the gift of obedience. Because of this gift, Ella has to do everything she is told regardless of whether she wants to or not, or whether it is dangerous or not. The book starts to describe the gift of obedience as a curse, which is the first sign of confronting gender stereotypes. Ella says, “Anyone could control me with an order, and against an order I was powerless”. This is showing that being completely obedient without a choice and not having a say in one’s own life can actually be dangerous to them. This challenges the stereotype of submission and obedience in most fairy tales.

Throughout the story, the readers are shown multiple times how Ella’s curse controls her life. It becomes impossible to live with so Ella makes it her mission to try and find Lucinda, the fairy that “gifted” her with obedience, and get her to undo the curse. Over the course of her journey, Ella falls in love with Prince Charmont. Most fairy tales have the “love at first sight” theme, but Ella Enchanted is different. In this story, the two love interests fall in love over a period of time as their friendship grows. One comparison of this specific version of the Cinderella story to other versions of this story, is seen at the ball. Ella is told to be home by midnight and she loses a glass slipper, which allows Prince Char to find her in the end. When Prince Char finds Ella while looking for the girl that fits the glass slipper, she tells him that she does not love him and does not want to be with him because she is afraid of what the curse could do to him. She says, “I’m cursed. You wouldn’t be safe if I were your wife.” By telling the truth about her curse and breaking the promise that she made to her mother not to tell anyone, it broke the curse and Ella was free. Although, this story conforms to the romantic element of fairy tales, Ella saves herself and her love from the controlling power of the curse instead of Char saving her. She says, “I had been able to break the curse myself. I’d had to have reason enough, love enough to do it, to find the will and the strength.”

Along with the more realistic love story elements, Ella defies most fairytale gender stereotypes just by being who she is. She is smart, and strong willed. On many different occasions we are told that Ella is excessively clumsy. This is one reason that her father sends her to finishing school so that they can try to teach her to be a lady and not so clumsy. While at finishing school, she proves to be very intelligent and kind and makes true friendships there. She uses her intelligence and wit to escape many dangerous situations caused by her curse. She escapes an ogre-infested forest along with other challenges at finishing school and saves many people she loves along with herself. We are told that Ella is very stubborn, which completely defies gender stereotyping of the timid, submissive princesses of traditional fairy tales. By challenging this obedience aspect as a curse, the author clearly makes the importance of free will a theme throughout the book.

I believe that this is a wonderful book for young girls because it shows them that they are strong too, and that they do not need a boy to fight their battles. I grew up reading the more traditional styles of children's fairy tales, and although I have seen the movie Ella Enchanted, I had not thought about the different gender roles that this story portrays. I enjoyed reading this book and seeing the story through the eyes of a strong, independent girl.

Is banning books unconstitutional? First amendment has a lot to do with this subject because of the freedom of speech and freedom to read. First amendment makes it harder for people to ban books because of all the freedoms, which should not make it a problem but obviously it's still a problem cause some people find certain things offensive. But that's why I say if you don't like what your reading, then don't read it but it's not that simple… Banning books expresses more about the censorship than the book itself. In which, Most parents should be aloud to say what their child can or cannot read or even censorship theres some inappropriate books that some people shouldn't be reading such as minors. But in which freedom of speech comes and changes the whole perspective.

Freedom to read and of speech means that you are able to read what you would like to read, and freedom of speech means you are able to say what you would like without somebody stopping you. Which could mean you can write what you want to write because writing is basically speaking in which there's freedom of speech. Most freedom of speech is true, but would you want your child reading about something very inappropriate just because of freedom to read or freedom of speech, no. If a parent or person doesn't like the book, maybe he shouldn't read it or let his children read it. But banning books takes the books off the shelves, causing children or just people in general to not have the right to read anything they want to read. But in this case if you ban books from one person you would have to make it fair and ban for all, in which some people might want to read certain books, but if they get banned they cant do so.

In most cases not all people should be banned from reading certain literature. Maybe instead of banning books the constitution can make it illegal for authors to even right these censored books. But if this is the case back comes the freedom of speech and freedom to read and freedom to write, because the first amendment, so authors should be able to write their stories how they would want to write their stories. Banning books might not be such a great idea but even tho its not it may help the generation we live in now, it may help censor certain things or topics from a minors reading.

So mostly this makes banning book not unconstitutional because it should be your choice to read the books you would like to read, and if you find it offensive don't read it.Like, people/ authors can write what they desire and its your choice to take offense to the opinions of the author or just the writing of the authors. The First Amendment states that you can write anything you would like or say anything you would like, then it should be ok if you write what you want and say what you want. But this should mean that it's ok to read what you want to read also. Most people should be able to write and or read what they want to read or write, but still some people shouldn't have the right to read certain things. It doesn't matter if another doesn't want to read a book because the author said something that was offensive, this is part of an author writing what the author pleases, and should teach a person to not read something that may offend you.

In my opinion, if you may be offended by a certain writing or book don't read it. Most people need to understand that there is such thing as freedom of speech weather something offends you it freedom of speech and people cant be offended by another's opinion. And everybody should have the right to read what they please besides minors because they are still minors and shouldn't have the right to read something that may be inappropriate for their minds. Most censored books should be for people 18 and older in my opinion because 18 and older have the right to have an opinion and are more of a mature audience to read something censored. And minors may not take certain things the right way.

The Effect of Disgust Sensitivity on Moral Judgements in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Charles Darwin coined disgust as a sensation rather more distinct in its nature in which an individual has an aversion to negative stimuli deemed to be revolting primarily in the sense of taste and alternately to anything that evokes feelings akin to disgust (Darwin, 1872). Evolutionarily, disgust is accompanied by a distinct facial expression, the closing of the nares, nausea, and distancing oneself from the aversive stimuli (Haidt, McCauley, & Rozin, 1994). While disgust has traditionally been linked with ingestion and excretion from Tomkins (1963) viewing it as a recognition of competition to our food drive to Angyal (1941) deeming body wastes as the prime negative stimuli to elicit disgust, the emotion of disgust has broadened to include aversions to certain people, places, and things. Disgust has since been broken into four major categories: core disgust, animal-nature disgust, interpersonal disgust, and moral disgust (Rozin, Haidt, & McCauley, n.d.) Yet, there is not resounding confidence for what motivates the emotion of disgust beyond the traditional view of avoidance of harmful pathogens.

Emerging research suggests that there is a link between the emotion of disgust and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) (Pittenger, 2017). OCD is a common, chronic disorder characterized by uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions) that the individual feels compelled to complete (National Institute of Mental Health, 2016). Obsessive compulsive disorders can be grouped based on the nature of their symptoms with the five most common subtypes being: contamination obsession OCD with washing/cleaning compulsions; harm obsession OCD with checking compulsions, obsessions without visual components (e.g. sexual, religious, aggressive themes); symmetry obsessions with ordering, arranging, and counting compulsions; and, hoarding (Owen, 2018).

It has been suggested that appraisals of disgust could play a major role in obsessive contamination patterns and washing compulsions often exhibited in patients with contamination type OCD (Berle & Phillips, 2006). Researchers have also found that individuals with OCD have a deficiency for recognizing facial expressions of disgust (Pittenger, 2017). Finally, researchers have found similar brain pathways are activated for disgust and OCD pathology (Berle & Phillips, 2006). The frontal-striatal regions of the brain for individuals with OCD symptoms were found to be affected with the emotion of disgust which implies that the discomfort associated with disgust could be connect to the pathogenesis of common OCD behaviors (Sprengelmeyer et al., 1997). This relationship lends to the notion that patients with OCD (specifically contamination-type) will have stricter qualifications for what they deem as disgusting; and, therefore exhibit harsher views on stimuli, people, or situations considered disgusting in their schema.

Additionally, disgust has many similarities to how an individual experiences fear. Both are characterized by withdrawal or avoidance from a certain aversive stimuli. Researchers indicate evaluative conditioning (EC), a version of classical conditioning, as how we are conditioned to be fearful or disgusted by a certain stimuli. Evaluative conditioning proposes that we make hedonic judgements about stimuli, events, etc. to label a formerly neutral stimuli as positive or negative while combining it with an aversive stimuli (Berle & Phillips, 2006). Hence, it only takes one occurrence for this combination aversion to create an engrained state of fear or disgust thereby directly affecting our future behavior. This rationale led our team to question if sufferers from harm obsession OCD would make harsher moral judgements.

Disgust sensitivity describes the extent to which someone feels disgusted about a specific aversion. It is thought that an individual with high levels of disgust sensitivity would more likely be disgusted by other stimuli and situations (Berle & Phillips, 2006). Research has found that individuals with OCD are likely to show high levels of disgust sensitivity. Deacon and Olatunji (2006) studied the effect of disgust sensitivity on predicting contamination anxiety and avoidance, and found that disgust sensitivity was significantly related to anxious and avoidant behavior for all three contamination-related behavioral avoidance tasks (BATs) (Deacon & Olatunji, 2007).

There is additional evidence that moral judgements are correlated with the emotion of disgust. Jonathan Haidt's Moral Foundations Theory lists six foundations of morality: harm, fairness, loyalty, authority, purity, and liberty; with purity having links to disgust sensitivity (Haidt et al., 1994). Leeuwen and colleagues (2016) found that individuals with higher degrees of disgust sensitivity exhibited harsher moral judgments even when controlling for variables like political ideology. This indicates that moral judgements would be driven by an individual's perception of disgust sensitivity in accordance to certain aversive stimuli. Contrastingly, Kurt Gray's Theory of Dyadic Morality suggests that moral judgements are a social construct of a combination of two units: an intentional agent causing damage to a vulnerable patient which when put together causes harm. Hence, moral judgements would be the consequence of harm, with disgust acting as a situational byproduct (Gray, Young, et al., 2012).

The present study is focused on the effect of contamination obsession OCD and harm obsession OCD and their implications on disgust sensitivity and overall moral judgement. If disgust can be attributed to the judgement of morally disgusting scenarios aligned with Haidt's Moral Foundations Theory, it is predicted that people with contamination OCD will make harsher moral judgements on purity scenarios than people with harm obsession OCD and people without OCD. Patients with contamination OCD tend to have a higher disgust sensitivity which may apply to disgust in a moral context and therefore yield harsher judgements as they will reject the scenarios more strongly. In response to moral scenarios that are not related to purity or disgust, both groups of OCD patients should perform similarly because both groups are concerned with potential harm, more so than the group without OCD.

Alternatively, if moral judgement is mediated by harm instead of disgust as posed by Gray's Theory of Dyadic Morality, both groups of OCD patients, (contamination OCD and harm obsession OCD) will make harsher moral judgements on all types of moral dilemmas than people without OCD because patients with OCD have a higher concern for potentially harmful stimuli and will tend to reject those scenarios more strongly.

Participants were recruited through posters and online advertisements. Participation was limited to individuals currently diagnosed with OCD in between the ages of 18 and 30. A total of ninety individuals ( 5 females and 45 males) participated in this study with thirty individuals in each group (Mage = 25 years, SD = .503 years ) All testing occurred on site and in person. Participation was voluntary, and participants received no compensation for their time.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. We used Goodman, Price, and Rasmussen's (1989) Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) to first determine what type and how severe each individual's OCD was. Participants indicated the degree to which a series of situations occurred over the past week (e.g. How much control do you have over your obsessive thoughts?, How much time do you spend performing compulsive behaviors?). Our team added addendums to the original questions to differentiate between the different types of obsessive compulsive disorders we were interested in for our study (e.g. How much do you think about harming yourself or others, Do you feel you repeatedly wash your hands to protect for contamination?). Based on the results of this test, the participants were divided into one of three groups: a) contamination obsession OCD; b) harm obsession OCD; and, c) control group with no exhibited OCD tendencies.

Disgust Sensitivity. We used Olatunji and colleagues' (2007) Disgust Scale- Revised (DS-R) to assess the participant's individual differences in disgust sensitivity. Participants indicated how much they agreed with 27 scenarios from the seven domains of disgust elicitors by rating scenarios (e.g. It would bother me tremendously to touch a dead body) on a scale of 0 (strongly disagree, very untrue about me) to 4 (strongly agree, very true about me. The Disgust Sensitivity Scale has been found to have respectable internal consistency (Cronbach's ??? = .80) and test-retest reliability (0.79 for 4-5 month intervals) (Berle & Phillips, 2006). Higher scores on the Disgust Sensitivity Scale indicates that an individual would experience similar levels of disgust to varying situations and stimuli.

Procedure

Moral Dilemmas. After signing the informed consent form, each group was presented with examples of moral dilemmas taken from Gray, Schein, and Ward's (2009) study on how harm can mediate a link between disgusting and immoral acts. Participants were provided with and asked to read a summary of a total of eight moral dilemmas: four purity moral scenarios (e.g. incest, getting a blood transfusion from a child molester) and four harm/non-purity moral scenarios (e.g. domestic violence, adultery) to measure the participant's disgust sensitivity levels. Each group was given an equal number of scenarios (eight) in a randomized order.

The participants were presented with a moral scenario one at a time and were allotted five minutes per moral dilemma to read and reflect. After reading each scenario, the participants rated each moral dilemma on a Likert scale of 1 (completely and morally acceptable) to 7 (completely and morally unacceptable). The purpose of this test was to determine if people with a certain type of OCD (contamination versus harm) would have different reactions to the provided moral dilemmas, thereby indicating harsher moral judgements.

After the participants finished their tasks and supplemental tests, they were debriefed on the purpose of the experiment and provided with contact information for counsel if the subject matter evoked feelings that warranted attention.

Statistical Analyses

The scenario type and OCD diagnosis type were submitted to a two-way 2 (scenario type: disgust, harm) x 3 (OCD diagnosis: contamination OCD, harm OCD, no OCD) mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA). The scenario type (purity vs non-purity) acted as the within-subjects factor and the OCD diagnosis type (contamination OCD, harm OCD, or no OCD) acted as the between-subjects factor. The analysis was followed up with three independent t-tests to identify any significant relationships between the means of the within-subjects' factors and between-subjects' factors.

Results

The two-way 2 x 3 ANOVA yielded a significant difference for the condition of purity vs non-purity moral dilemmas (Figure 1). There was a significant difference between purity moral dilemmas and non-purity moral scenarios between the three groups , F(2, 87) = 15.389, p < .05. For the purity moral scenario condition, there was a significant difference found between both contamination obsession OCD participants and the control group, t(58) = -10.501, p < .05; and, contamination obsession OCD participants and harm obsession OCD participants, t(58) = 6.657, p <.05. Consistent with the hypothesis, participants with contamination obsession OCD recorded harsher moral judgements against the control group and harm obsession OCD group when presented with purity moral scenarios. For the non-purity moral scenario condition, there was a significant difference found between contamination OCD participants and the control group, t(58) = -7.173, p < .05; and, harm obsession OCD patients and the control group, t(58) = -8.740, p <.05. Consistent with the hypothesis, participants in both the contamination obsession and harm obsession participant pools recorded harsher moral judgments against the control group when presented with non-purity moral scenarios. There was an insignificant relationship found between contamination obsession OCD and harm obsession OCD for appraisals of non-purity moral dilemmas, t(58)= -.773, p = .443. Contrary to the original hypothesis, the type of OCD a participant had did not affect their final moral judgement recordings when presented with a non-purity moral scenario. Instead, participants who exhibited any subset of OCD tended to make harsher moral judgements in both conditions.

Discussion

This study provides new evidence to support the relationship between disgust and tendencies of individuals with Obsessive Compulsive Disorders. As hypothesized, Haidt's Moral Foundations Theory was supported by individuals with OCD reporting harsher moral judgements than the control group with no OCD tendencies. Specifically, when confronted with purity moral dilemmas, sufferers of contamination obsession OCD tended to make harsher moral judgements on the scenario over and above individuals with harm obsession OCD and the control group. This association between disgust sensitivity and contamination obsession OCD is aligned with previous researcher's findings (Haidt et al., 1994; Horberg, Oveis, Keltner, & Cohen, 2009; Sprengelmeyer et al., 1997; van Leeuwen, Dukes, Tybur, & Park, 2017). Horberg and colleagues (2009) found that disgust had the power to moralize or amplify the moral significance on matters of purity with the emotion of disgust being a stronger indicator over fear and anger on condemnation of morally impure situations (Horberg et al., 2009).

For the non-purity moral dilemmas, both contamination obsession and harm obsession OCD suffers reported harsher moral judgements when compared to the control group, but there was no indication to support Gray's dyadic view that harm obsession OCD participants would report harsher moral judgements over contamination obsession OCD sufferers. Other findings have found that appraisals of moral dilemmas when considering disgusting stimuli cannot be restricted to purity or bodily norms; rather, disgust should be viewed as dyadic with other components, like physical disgust (e.g. sex crimes), affecting an individual's moral judgements (Chapman & Anderson, 2014). Further supplemental tests for alternate components of disgust, namely studying the dyadic view, could aid in further increasing the internal validity of this study in the future.

It would be intriguing to incorporate the element of sexual disgust to the current study. Leeuwen and colleagues (2017) found that scores of higher sexual disgust were more indicative for purity/sanctity scores over pathogen disgust. It would be interesting to determine whether OCD patients would be more concerned with the threat of sexual reproduction or sexually transmitted disease, and how that would relay to their subsequent moral judgements on similar moral dilemmas. Additionally, the study could be improved by researching the implications of disgust sensitivity across cultures. Spiritual impurity was cited as more distressful over contamination and harm for OCD patients hailing from Iran. This suggests that triggers for OCD in more Western cultures may not have the same gravity or effect for sufferers of OCD globally (Shams, Foroughi, Moretz, & Olatunji, 2013).

A limitation to the present study is the crossover of multiple subtypes of OCD. Seldomly do sufferers with OCD fall directly into one specific subtype of OCD, so our study would need to be updated to include a large population size in order to be more generalizable. In summary, our study's results support previous research that there is a relationship between high levels of disgust sensitivity and appraisals of purity-type moral dilemmas seen in individuals with OCD.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

According to the National Institute of Mental Health ("Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder"), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a disorder that can last your entire life. The main symptoms are uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts and behaviors that makes you feel the urge to repeat over and over. OCD can manifest itself in the form of behaviors such as repetitive actions that a person cannot control or tics. Some common examples are people that constantly wash their hands, check doors repetitively to see if they are locked or light switches to see if they are off. A key part of this being a disorder is when it interferes with daily life. In this paper, I will examine and describe OCD, its signs and symptoms, causes, treatments and the long term prognosis of the disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is when you have a pattern of unreasonable thoughts and fears that lead you to do certain things repetitively. These disorder may interfere with your everyday life and can be a horrible distraction to things you have to do. According to Rachman (2009), people with OCD are afflicted with disturbing unwanted thoughts and feel compelled repeatedly to carry out activities that they know to be irrational. It is difficult for them to understand, and equally difficult to explain to other people, why they repeatedly engage in senseless behavior. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, approximately 2.2 million adults or about 1% of the population of the United States has OCD (https://adaa.org). This includes approximately 1 in every 40 adults and 1 in every 100 children.

Some of the more common symptoms of OCD cited by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIH) are categorized into Obsessions and Compulsions. Obsessions can include things like fear of germs, unwanted and forbidden thoughts, being aggressive towards other people and needing to have things in a perfect order. On the other hand, Compulsions are the behaviors that a person with OCD feels they need to do all the time or it gets in the way of them accomplishing what they set out to do. Examples can include behaviors such as excessive cleaning, ordering things in a certain way and repeatedly checking on things like locked doors and light switches. While people without OCD may do some of these things, the NIH (nimh.nih.gov) states that a person with OCD can't control his or her thoughts or behaviors, even when those thoughts or behaviors are recognized as excessive.

There is no known exact cause of OCD. However, much of the research has identified that people with OCD have brains that work differently than those without it. Research has also shown that OCD can be genetic. The International OCD Foundation (https://iocdf.org) states that OCD does run in families, and that genes likely pay a role in the development of the disorder.

Additionally, WebMD (https://www.webmd.com) states that OCD is slightly more common in women than in men. The site also states that certain things can make a person more likely to get the disorder. This includes having an immediate family member with OCD, developing another psychological disorder such as depression, anxiety or tics, if a person experiences trauma or has a history that includes physical or sexual abuse when the person was a child.

Some other research has suggested that there are environmental factors that can lead to the development of OCD. BeyondOCD (2018) states that some triggers that have been associated with the start of OCD are traumatic brain injuries or a severe illness in children. This can include such sicknesses that people feel are common like strep throat or the flu. They make clear that while these illnesses themselves do not cause OCD, they can be triggers for the development of the disorder. Other environmental factors may include stress and the style of parenting a child is raised under, but this has not yet been definitively proven.

While there is no cure for OCD, treatment mostly involves Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and/or medication (Koran, 2017). Treatment should also involve what they call Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). ERP means having the person with OCD be exposed to their thoughts and recognizing that they have them and it is part of their disorder. The Response Prevention part of this therapy is for the counseling to work that allows the person to make the choice not to do the compulsive behavior once it is recognized. It is important to know that the most effective treatment is a combination of all of these strategies. Another treatment for OCD is called Habit Reversal Training. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (https://adaa.org), this training involves practicing of the tic or habit in front of a mirror and figuring out what situation causes the tic you have. By doing this, it will help you gain awareness of when and why the habit or tic happens and start to help avoid the things that trigger them. Habit reversal training takes patience and time as you are trying to get rid of an addictive tic or habit. Having family around to support you during this is an important part fo this treatment method.. Cognitive therapy could also be used to help you with your disorder. A therapist will help you understand when your tics or habits may happen and he/she will help you respond in different ways.

There are also medications that can help with OCD. Many of the medications used to treat people with OCD are the same that are used to treat people with depression. These medications are classified as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The National Institute of Mental Health (https://www.nimh.nih.gov/) states that these medications can take up to 10-12 weeks to actually start working. They go on to say that, even thought there is no cure, people under treatment can learn to live full and productive lives. Additionally, the most successful treatment of OCD combines both of the above methods, CBT and Medication.

Greasers from the Outsiders

The title of this is story is interesting because of many things. In one way, the title refers to the status of the Greasers being the outsiders of the story. This is shown in the form of the Greasers, who are categorized and perceived to be in the lower class. Whilst, the upper-class kids are perceived to be the Socs. As Ponyboy writes to us, the readers, it is always perceived to us that the Greasers are outcasts of their society because of the way they are treated. Ponyboy tells us that the Socs get editorials in the paper for being a public disgrace one day and an asset to society the next (Hinton 4). The Greasers, however, are assumed to commit the infringements and are the go to group to blame for every misconception. The Greasers are more likely to be found by their crimes than the Socs because they came from the wrong world everyone else came from. One thing I also noticed with the title is that it refers to multiple Outsiders in their society.

Ponyboy realizes this later in the book and tells us how similar both groups (Socs and Greasers) of the story are. He found this out through the many conversations he had with other Soc's such as Cherry and Randy. He realizes that they are similar, and even though they share such different identities and morales, that the Socs also have the perception of being Outsiders too. He explains this discovery through the following lines, Maybe the two different worlds we live in were not so different. We saw the same sunset (Hinton 35). And as the story comes to an end, Ponyboy learns that everyone is an outsider to something, it is just how we see it. This could be supported by the following, (Hinton 152). At first we thought the title applied to just the Greasers (the obvious). But then, later in the book we learn that it applies to all young people (including the Socs). And that is what makes the title so interesting that continues to spark my curiosity.

It keeps changing its meaning as we continue to read through the book. The cover, however, did not really spark any curiosity when I first saw it. This was because It just had a picture of a person with a leather jacket (something a typical Greaser would wear). But as I continued to read through the story and looking back at the cover, I realized that it was symbolizing the Greasers and how they are perceived to be one of the many Outsiders of the story (therefore sparking my curiosity). But as you read through the story, the cover makes a bit more sense. This is because it shows us not only the identity of the Greasers but shows us how black and white (the cover was in black and white) this book really is. On a side note, I feel as if this book was an appropriate choice for our unit; Appearances versus reality. When you take a closer look at the characters and the two different groups (Greasers and Socs), you can be able to tell that their appearance is not what you always want to see when looking for their reality.

If you look at the Greasers, for example, we would think that they are a hood who just don't care about anything (Ponyboy is an exception). But their reality very much contradicts that. If you look at each character in the Greaser gang, you would be able that they are only that way due to their environment and societal structure. At the same time, we perceive the Socs as these rich kids who own Corvairs and Ford-Mustangs. But at the same time, we also think they are mean, snotty, and people who take their wealth for granted. Their reality, however, shows us that not all of the Socs are terrible people like we categorize them to be. Some people, like Cherry Valance and Randy, are not the type of people that torture the Greasers all the time(like other Socs). Some of the Greasers, like Ponyboy, create a fake appearance to hide their reality.

For example, their (the Greasers) hair is everything to them. They use certain materials to create greasy hair, their specialty. This could be shown with Ponyboy stating the following, My hair is longer than a lot of boys wear theirs, squared off in back and long at the front and sides, but I am a greaser and most of my neighborhood rarely bothers to get a haircut (Hinton 1). They try to appear to be more expensive than they truly are. Their looks (especially their hair) make people categorize their personality to a typical Greaser, which is perceived to be a heartless and tough person. This story shows us that people's personalities and characteristics are not necessarily correlated on how they look and act around you. And that is the point our unit is trying to make us realize and learn from.

How does Dopamine Play a Causative Role in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is currently one of the most common anxiety disorders in the United States, affected around 40 million adults in the US alone. This includes people from the ages of 18 and older, however OCD symptoms begin developing at ages as young as 7 years of age (ADAA 2018).

As time goes on, more and more videos and images are posted, described to trigger your OCD or give you OCD. These images and videos usually consist of unorganised rooms or other things that are just slightly off on aspects such as symmetry and/or order. It is popular amongst adolescents to use the term OCD casually in situations where an individual feels the need to clean something up. Even though this appears to be rather harmless conversational slang, over time this idea of OCD solidifies itself as its common definition. I too used the term OCD loosely to describe some of my family members' behaviors, but after having seen the extent to which OCD can affect an individual's life, I became more critical of my use thereof. I have also had personal experiences with depression, which made me more cognisant of my use of terms with clinical meaning. Therefore, I not only wanted to uncover the ongoing misconceptions about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but I also wanted to investigate the biological mechanisms driving OCD.

However, when looking more closely at aspects of OCD I began realising its complexity. Although I will be investigating the biological side of OCD in this paper, it was interesting to get a look at the other perspectives of this complex disorder. No cure exists at this point in time, however there are a variety of different treatments that have been shown to ease symptoms, or at least give patients the feeling of relief, regardless of clinical efficacy. These treatments can range from psychotherapy to various medications that strive to modulate certain neurotransmitters (NT) in the brain.

I chose dopamine (DA), as it is known to be the neurotransmitter in charge of appetitive behaviors and plays roles in addictive behavior. This is important to consider when studying OCD, as the thoughts and behaviors that occur within the disorder consist of repeating thoughts, which are followed by actions to reduce the rising anxiety of the obsessions. Understanding OCD and its chemical mechanisms is a question of particular importance to people who suffer from severe OCD. These individuals will sometimes engage in self harm or in more extreme cases resort to suicide if the obsessive thoughts or compulsions become so bad that they can no longer be controlled. Being able to answer the question of biochemical interactions in key behavioral systems would help to understand OCD and how different symptoms could be treated to reduce or even eliminate them entirely. It is also important to me, as stated previously, to eradicate the notion that this disorder is entirely harmless, and that normal tendencies are in fact very different from the clinical disorder. It is also important that people understand the consequences of having this disorder and know that its origins and manifestations are not fabricated by those affected.

Understanding OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder generally consists of two main parts: the obsessions, and the compulsions. According to the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) obsessions are recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges, or impulses that are experienced, at some time during the disturbance, as intrusive and unwanted, and that in most individuals cause marked anxiety or distress. Individuals will attempt to ignore or suppress such thoughts, urges, or images, or to neutralise them with some other thought or action; the actions associated with relieving these urges are called compulsions. Compulsions can be characterised as repetitive behaviors or mental acts that the individual feels driven to perform in response to an obsession or according to rules that must be applied rigidly. Therefore, the obsessions can be defined as the mental aspect of this disorder and the compulsions as the physical aspect.

While most people have certain obsessive thoughts and possibly even compulsive behaviors at some points in their lives, it is important to distinguish that these are not equivalent to individuals who suffer from clinically diagnosed OCD. In order for these thoughts and behaviors to be defined as of OCD, the obsessions and compulsions must to become so extreme that they consume larger amounts of time, thus disrupting daily life and other activities.

Generally there are two types of treatment for OCD: psychotherapy or medication. The five most commonly used medication for OCD are the antidepressants Clomipramine, Fluoxetine (Prozac„?), Fluvoxamine, Paroxetine, and Sertraline, all of which are serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs). These medications were tested in a randomised placebo control study and were shown to have a significant effect on OCD symptoms as compared to the placebo (Jefferson, James W. et al). Medications consisting of SRIs and serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) do show a positive effect on OCD symptoms, however medications that consisted of just SRIs or SSRIS were significantly less effective in reducing OCD symptoms, rather than medications that inhibit the reuptake of multiple NTs. It is now important to consider why current medication focuses on serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs), rather than directly trying to regulate DA, and why DA still plays a key role.

Understanding Dopamine

Dopamine is a monoamine neurotransmitter that is produced in several areas of the brain including the substantia nigra (SN) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA), and is then released from the hypothalamus into various parts of the frontal lobe. Its main job revolves around controlling the brain's reward and pleasure centers, thus modulating systems of reinforcement. DA controls the brain's reward and pleasure centers by producing both excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials, depending on the postsynaptic receptor. This is important to be considered, as DA is released when an action or activity is completed, leading to long term potentiation.

Studies have shown dopamines relation to craving, such as drug cravings for example nicotine addiction (Franken, 2003). These studies demonstrated that conditioned drug stimulus produces an increase in DA levels. (Franken). Therefore, it was concluded that DA suppression drives behaviors associated with cravings. Other studies such as Olds' and Milner's 1954 DA research have demonstrated that the stimulation of the nucleus accumbens–an area from which DA is released–caused extreme repetitive behavior in rats. Rats would push a lever, which stimulated the nucleus accumbens, leading to DA release and an increase in synaptic DA concentration. They would even repeat this behavior until they would pass out from exhaustion. A follow up study also showed that they would cross electrified grids in order to push the lever, demonstrating DA's ability as a 'reward neurotransmitter.'

With this it can be suggested that dopamine could play a role in OCD, as DA has been demonstrated to play roles in behaviors similar to those of OCD. Franken demonstrated a relationship between DA and addiction, which share many of the similar features as obsessive thoughts do, while Olds and Milner demonstrated a relationship between DA and compulsive behavior. Therefore, it would not be illogical to consider whether a dysfunction in one of the dopaminergic systems could possibly play a role in parts of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It will be discussed to what extent DA plays a role in OCD. It will also be discussed how DA is possibly involved in systems of serotonin (5-HT) and/or norepinephrine (NE), which medical practitioners target for treatment with (S)SRIs and NRIs to decrease the severity of patient's OCD symptoms.

Dopamine and Obsession

Dopamine plays a extremely large role in Motivation. Dopamine's chemical signal gets passed from one neuron to the next, and between those two neurons, DA interacts with various receptors inside the synapse. When these chemical signals are sent through the mesolimbic pathway, which comes from the middle of the brain and branches to various location including the cerebral cortex, they create a reward system, which plays the biggest role in motivation of an individual. What is very important, when considering DA being released for reward and motivation, is that these chemical signals are not sent out as a reward, but as a matter of fact before this. DA performs its tasks before we obtain rewards, meaning that its real job is to encourage one to act. DA is released in anticipation of these rewards. It is also very important to consider that DA is not in charge of pleasure, as studies have demonstrated, higher levels in dopamine being released in soldiers with PTSD for example, when they heard gunshots fired (Liberzon et al., 1999).

The dopamine reward pathways begin in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and are mainly sent to the frontal cortex (FC). The FC controls important cognitive skills in humans, such as emotional expression, problem solving, memory, language, judgment, and other behaviors. It generally is in control of our personality and our ability to communicate.

One specific connection that we have seen of dopamine to an obsession/obsessive disorder, is in gambling disorders. The gambling disorder is classified as a substance-related and addictive disorder by the DSM-V. Evidence has suggested that individuals who suffer from a gambling disorder have a greater increase in DA levels, in response to gambling stimuli, compared to individuals who did not suffer from this disorder (Joutsa et al.). Here, it is also important to mention that 5-HT is considered to be the most significant NT in abnormal impulsive behaviours (Ib???±ez et al.), which specifically relates to gambling disorder. Evidence suggests that a 5-HT baseline deficit is associated with gambling disorders. In a study, DeCaria et al., interpreted the results, as indicating that individuals with a gambling disorder had a 5-HT postsynaptic receptor hypersensitivity. This demonstrated 5-HT's role in impulsive decision making, which could be translated to obsessive/compulsive behaviours in OCD, as similar 5-HT and DA depressions have been found in OCD patients. 5-HT's relationship to DA however, will be further discussed later in this paper.

On the other hand, a study found that in patients with general anxiety disorder (GAD) also had a decreased availability of the dopamine D2 receptors in the striatum, which was consistent to prior findings in GAD. GAD is an anxiety disorder characterized by excessive, uncontrollable and often irrational worrying about events or activities. With this it could be inferred that DA's effect on GAD could be translated to the obsessions in OCD, as obsessions are defined as recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges, or impulses that are experienced, at some time during the disturbance, as intrusive and unwanted, and that in most individuals cause marked anxiety or distress. (DSM-V) SRIs have also previously been used to treat GAD, which would imply that GAD and the obsessions in OCD affect similar systems in the brain.In Conclusion, evidence suggests that, while dopamine is not the main and only factor affecting OCD, it does play a major role as an intermediate messenger for the system that causes at least parts of OCD. Though there are also parts of DA that affect OCD and are not previously affected by other NTs, medication tests have shown that the relationship of DA to 5-HT and Norepinephrine is a vital part of OCD, as the most effective medications target these three and many more neurotransmitters.

Although this paper demonstrates the importance of dopamine in OCD and medications working against the symptoms of OCD, a better understanding of dopamine's interplay with other neurotransmitters, that play a role in OCD, has to be developed to create better working medications. Future medications that focuses more on dopamine itself for example could cause more problems such as, addiction to the drug itself, movement and motor problems which could either lead to uncontrolled movement similar to that of Parkinson's Disease or restraint of movement controls, and all together motivation loss in patients. Dopamine is such a complex neurotransmitter that affects so many aspects of physical and mental life, that drugs have to be able to limit only very specific dopamine systems if they want to work against OCD. Similarly to how Clomipramine works through serotonin and norepinephrine to control the correct systems of dopamine, still causing a plethora of side effects and not being fully successful in suppressing OCD behaviours/symptoms.

From a broader perspective, investigating solely Dopamine's role in OCD provides only a small insight into the complexities of the disorder. Nonetheless, this understanding adds to the existing knowledge of the neurobiology of OCD, which could ultimately help clarify correlations between other potential factors and OCD. Further research into other neurotransmitters associated with OCD would hopefully help for future advancements in the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Bullying and Suicide

In the United States there has been an increase of suicide due to bullying in schools. Families are being greatly affected because of this situation and it must stop. School is the major place where this is occurring. Many students come to their homes upset because of how they are being treated at school. The only ones that could be trained to help are teachers. Teachers need to be more involved with their students. Faculty and staff members need to target signs of bullying and target signs of suicide in the students. The problem here is that teachers need to be trained and a specific way to stop suicide and bullying. The state will have to help fund these kinds of trainings for each school district in New Jersey. According to the NJTV news the report identifies where the highest rates of suicide exist throughout the state. The Skyland region in rural northwest New Jersey has the highest rate of youth suicide at 7.5 per 100,000 persons. And while rates are declining for older teens, they're increasing for the younger, more than doubled, according to the CDCP, with teen boys twice as likely to die by suicide as teen girls. This is a prove that more training must be down by faculty and staff. Also, according to AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, each year 44,965 Americans die by suicide, for every suicide there are twenty-five attempts, and suicide costa the United States sixty-nine billion dollars annually.

The question is: what is causing suicide? Doing some research two article about why teens suicide themselves caught my attention. To start off with I would like to focus on the article written by Kathleen D. Hokans and David Lester Motives for Suicide in Adolescents: A Preliminary Study. These two authors believe that the reason why adolescents suicide themselves is because of social isolations from their families. There is a difference in sex more boys than girls kill themselves according to Hokans and Lester nine themes were rated by one judge who was unaware that age and sex diffrences were to be examined: (1) internalized anger, (2) externalized anger, (3) ambiguous anger, (4) general hopelessness, (5) specific hopelessness plus cognitive constriction, (6) social isolation unspecified, (7) social isolation from family, (8) social isolation from peers, and (9) somatic complaints. According to this information that has been collected we could focus on a certain age of adolescents that need the most attention that could be from middle school to high school students.

A show in Netflix named 13 reasons Why has caught a lot of attention to parents, teachers, and many others. This show gives reasons why students suicide themselves. According to What '13 Reasons Why' lacks: parenting states that Hannah, the protagonist of the show, takes her life and leaves behind 13 audiotapes that describe how peers and school officials failed her and were ultimately responsible for her suicide. Her parents are blindsided and spend the first season trying to decipher her motives. They had little insight into her struggles, and via flashbacks, we see myriad misplaced sentiments and missed opportunities for discussion.

It has been said by NJTV news that teachers have been trained and that there are free online training for school teachers and school staff, said Dawn Doherty. We've had over 200,000 educators across the country complete this. For youth we do have our Youth Council which is an interactive group that meets during the school year. To be honest I think there must be more done and not just for the teachers but for the faculty member and staff that are involved day to day with these students.

My proposal is for staff members and faculty that are mostly involved with the students for example: (security officers that interact with the students, nurses, secretaries, custodians, lunch aids, teachers, assistant teachers and volunteers at the schools) receive training every 3 months to refresh information that will help them target suicide and bullying. This will reduce the chances of students wanting to hurt themselves or others. My project will be funded by every school board. This meeting every three months will be an hour and a half long. We will only need about one hundred dollars for any refreshments at the meeting. Faculty and staff members will right any of the target signs which are change in behavior, talking a lot about death, threats said by any students, and always feeling tired in class. After the report has been received by the councilor he/she will contact his or her guardian and will meet with them if it's becoming a habit for that student. When the mother or father of that student meets with the councilor he or she will show the report in front of the child and seek help and ask the reason for the change in behavior, talking about death or killing him/herself, and sleeping in class. This is the only way that the guardian and the councilor will determine if the student needs to seek professional help. When it comes to bullying the faculty or staff member will report the student who is doing the bullying as well. The teacher or staff member who is a witness must report also who the bullying was made to, to make sure that student is not affected.

Narration- Autobiographical Narrative

When I was still young about 12 years old, we lived with my cousins at our place especially over the holidays. During such times we had much fun and most of it was doing the silly things that many did not like. We were used to making jokes about anyone that we thought had a weird look on any part of their body. We could laugh our heart out without caring what the other person felt. Some came to our place to report us but this did not change things either. Some got irritated so badly that they retaliated by chasing us or beating us which made it even more fun. I happened to be the head of this group of a silly non-remorseful gang and I was happy about until a day came that taught me a lesson, a lesson that I have to pay for all the unkind things I did to anyone.

There was this young man who used to bring us newspapers every day. The boy had a funny look on his skin. He had red flaky skin which to us looked laughable. We therefore made fun of him whenever he came by calling him “peely face”. We did this every day and the fact that the boy did not care to notice us, it still made us feel better. No one bothered to find out the boy’s name. We had a name of our own and we decided what one would be called regardless of who their names were. I did not realize how such jokes were expensive until one day I woke with my whole body feeling itchy. I thought it to be a normal thing after all and went out to have a bath. The itching did not seem to stop. My body was turning pale. I was rushed to the hospital for a checkup. The doctor reported that I had come in contact with the poisonous red oak. As I lay down on the bed the memory of the newspaper boy came back. I looked at the mirror and there was no difference between me and the boy. I was now paying for my unkindness that I had portrayed towards people.

By now there was no sight of the boy as he had stopped dropping the newspapers to our home. We did not bother to find out his names hence it was hard to track him. I wished I could find him and apologize to him. Being in his shoes was hard and I dreaded the fact that everyone would be looking at me with horrid faces and others making fun of me.

Conduct an observational experiment to investigate how the exam timetable affected the performance of students in sevens exams in a class of eighteen students.

 Description

Divide the student into three groups of six and name them as group A, B and C. Set three exam timetables. Schedule the time of doing the exams in three sessions namely; Morning session, afternoon, and evening session and assign them to group A, B, and C respectively. Group A should do all the exams in the morning sessions, group B in the afternoon and group B during the evening sessions. Independent variable; Exam timetable In this case, exam timetable becomes the independent variable because the performance of the student will depend on the time the exam is scheduled to be done. This is because the timetable on time directly affects the performance. The Ordinal level of measurement. This will involve ranking from specific to general. i.e., ranking from individual student performance to group performance through comparison.

Anova is the appropriate analyze for dependent variable in this experiment because it can be used perfectly when the number of observation differ in the specific group. It examines the relationship of the mean of different groups, that is, whether equal or not and the difference is used to compare the variance. In the calculation of descriptive analysis, mean and variance are appropriate for this case hence recommended.

Confounding Variables

Confounding variables refers to any other variable related to the dependent variable and in one way or the other affects the independent variable. In this experiment, they, involve physical and environmental changes on time and how they affect. About exams, they outline how the student will respond to exams. In the morning when their mind is not interrupted by many activities which may occur in the cause of the day or the mid-day. Is Banning Books Unconstitutional

In 1982 the Supreme Court banned a number of books because they were so called anit-American, and against religion. Why should you be able to decide what people can and cannot say? To me that is a violation the first amendment. Back in 360 bc Plato said our first business will be to supervise the making of fables and legends; rejecting all which are unsatisfactory. This was before printer, in ancient times if someone didn't like the book they would burn it, which would make them unable to ever be read.

In 1450 printers were invented so it was possible to make more than one copy. So, burning books was ruled out. After 40 years the first official censorship of dangerous publications. Then in 1535 French king Francis the first prohibited the printing of books. By 1559 a book was published, it was a list of all banned books. The first book burning in America took place in 1650, when William pynchon wrote a book and it got taken away by the Puritan authorities and burned publicly.

Now, Henry Reichman from Issues and Answers in Schools, Censorship and Selection defines censorship as restricted circulation of literacy, suppression, etc. Most books people don't usually know they were taken out of a library. Most books being banned are profanity, violence, and demon or occult. Stealth censorship, taking books out the library secretly, happens mostly at schools, colleges and some public libraries.

Back in 1975, the Pico decision took place and the Pico decision is the case where the U.S Supreme Court decided to split on the First Admendment issue of local school boards about removing library books from schools. And from them doing so no single opinion commanded a majority of the court, or announced any legal binding rule. And by this many books aren't getting banned, and people get their freedom to speech.

After all banning books is unconstitutional, and against the first amendment. When that 17 year old kid stood up to the Supreme Court, and made them see, that was when we stopped breaking the first amendment.

Oedipus and Lysistrata

Oedipus and Lysistrata are fantastic playwrights. For instance, Oedipus is one of the characters who seem to portray the traditional Greece. On the other hand, Lysistrata is used to present the modern ways of life. Consequently, both plays Oedipus and Lysistrata have a significant role to beliefs and civilization of the early Greece. Moreover, both plays have significant roles since they take the duty of their actions. In both plays a vital role in feminism. Oedipus and Lysistrata play major roles in the contemporary ways of life such as religion and feminism. The purpose of this paper is to explore the similarities and differences between Oedipus and Lysistrata and in which the plays fit in the Greek comedy.

First, many similarities have been developed in the two plays. Both plays exemplify their necessity on the domestic issues that do not entail the outside life. In Oedipus and Lysistrata, plays a significant role in the religion matters. Both plays argue that the only way to eliminate a plague is through consultation of the higher power or those in authority. Therefore, the plays seem to have a great impact in making their decisions. For instance, in Lysistrata Zeus is portrayed as their highest god (Aristophanes and Sarah, 41). On the other hand, Oedipus has a great honor to shrines. He says, `` I followed up the one thing I could find acted on it. So I have sent away brother-in-law, son of Menoeceus, Creon, to Pythian Apollo’s shrine, to learn from him what I might do or say to save our city” (Sophocles and Ian, 9).In this play, shrines are used by the human nature to seek help. Thus, both plays have displays the same spiritual tentacles that are used to make up their decisions in the life experiences.

Additionally, the plays have fiction playwrights. It is not easy for a reader to comprehend this aspect at the beginning of plays but after in-depth analysis, the facts come out clearly. Similarly, both plays have a great role to beliefs and civilization of the early Greece. Also, there are noticeable similarities such as examination of taking obligations alongside their actions. Moreover, both plays bring out feminism in the ancient Greek culture. For instance, Lysistrata is a play that discusses various situations of war between Athenians as well as its allies (Bolt et al…, 53-54).The other group includes Peloponnesian League who had selected Sparta as their leader which tried to resolve the problem that had arisen on women for denying their husband's conjugal rights.

In the Greek setting, the central theme that is developed by the ancient authors is the development of tragedies. In the play, Jocasta is associated with the prophecy that was given to Laius before the birth of Oedipus. The Oracle informed him that it was essential for him to die as a victim in his son’s hands. Afterward, Oedipus comes out and discloses the prophecy which made him abandon Corinth. He says, “that I was fated to lie with my mother, and show to daylight an accursed breed which men would not endure, and I was doomed to be the murderer of the father that begot me” (Edmunds and Alan, 82).Similarly, in Lysistrata, many people worshiped Hecate who was portrayed as the goddess of the children.

Nevertheless, both novels have differences that come out clearly. Oedipus play is used to develop the traditional culture of the Greece people (Edmunds and Alan, 25-26). On the other hand, Lysistrata is used to present the modern ways of life. Moreover, the beginning of the Oedipus is developed by the utilization of a plague, and on the other hand, Lysistrata opens up the story with comedy. The drama that is portrayed in Lysistrata play, it is satirically presented.

According to my argument, the modern audience can be received warmly by the modern audience. Most of the Christianity ways of life and those of the ancient Greek are common. The Greek religion had beliefs as well as rituals that were practiced in the different ways. Both Oedipus Rex and Lysistrata had a universal god, Zeus who had the ability to end plagues and misfortunes to human beings (Sophocles and Ian, 14). On the other hand, most of the modern Christians identify themselves with God who is the most powerful. Moreover, I argue that most of the Christian audience will receive the pays warmly since they have common practices. For instance, of the ceremonies and rituals in the ancient Greek were carried out in alters as compared to the Christians in the current world.

As the points discussed above suggest, both novels Oedipus and Lysistrata have significant similarities from their setting. They place of origin or setting was the same since they were composed in Greece. The plays were authored in the century and time. They portray the same idea of stereotyping the nature with sexual orientation. Moreover, the novels are used to give a detailed description of the ancient Greeks and the contemporary way of life as portrayed in the Lysistrata.
