Is College For Me?

Waking up an 8 in the morning to the sound of the alarm on my phone that reads “ Wake up!” I will never be a morning person.

Then I got introduced to coffee, a drink that will get me through my class and a little more. I have never been good with the whole idea of “school”.

I'm always the kid that sits in the back and never says a word. The one that looks down when the teacher asks us a question. And best of all. If the teacher asks me a question, I will look at the teacher with a frozen brain and the word “yes” will come out of my mouth. School has never been my strong suit and I challenge myself to make it one of them.

From waking up to my dad yelling up the stairs at me to wake up, to now having to set my own alarm, I am going to have to change my whole morning routine. I must shower without getting asked, I have to brush my teeth without throwing a fit, and I have to get my own breakfast. I have never been an independent person. I have always had someone to wake me up for 3 years of high school. Senior year I started to gain my independence. After my mom got sick and wasn't able to help out I then started to do some chores, mainly mowing the lawn since I enjoyed doing it. One week before school started my mom passed away. I decided I would work my butt off in honor of her. She has always wanted me to be successful with school, middle school I would do anything in my power to avoid doing any homework, (even if that meant making the dog eat it or my sister does it). Then I thought to myself. “I'm going to have a new start, it is high school, let us do this.”

I started freshmen year of high school almost not passing any class but woodshop and gym. And that trend slowly started to change, sophomore year was not as bad, then junior year kicked in. I started to do my own work, I would pay attention, and I would be on time. And my grades reflected my effort. Then senior year came around and I was what they called “the nerd” and I would wear a suit every day to school, I would do all my work, I even stayed after to help students that needed help. I would spend my lunch in the computer room helping send updated to all the computers and to clean all the keyboards, and that is when I realized, I love computers, I know much more about them than the average human, I can even build a computer faster than most people can.

I posted a challenge to myself. To not be the kid that sits in the back of the room and says nothing. To ask questions and not just sit there and be confused. College is a new start for me as well as a new start for many others. A place that everyone shares one thing, and that is they are there to learn, not show up the teacher. The college path I have chosen to travel may be a different one than other people, but it is the path that makes me think I will do well and be able to leave in four years with a degree in a field I am passionate in. Going to college allows for many opportunities to open up in life. Society is changing at a very rapid rate.

College is a very difficult time for nearly everyone, as Charles Murray who published an article on should the Obama Generation Drop out also states that “A large majority of young people do not have the intellectual ability to do genuine college-level work” (95). Attending college is not for everyone, but It can teach you to learn how to become independent, develop discipline, evolve new life skills, and learn how to balance a social life versus student life. The experiences you obtain and gain from attending college can lead you to learn how to live your life within the college environment in a way that creates harmony with who you are.

College is also known for causing stress for students. Many students experience stress, and they must combine their busy lives and the demands of college and still make time for themselves. We all experience stress in college getting ready for exams, completing papers, or adjusting to college life. We all know that being stressed for a long time may cause health issues. Although stress can be harmful at times, it can also be good and stimulating. Stress can also be good, because of facing new challenges helps students grow up and learn new things. Dealing with academic and personal stressors is the hardest part about college, and it will interfere with personal life and help experiment life’s options. It is a time of trial and error until you find what works for you.

On the other side of things, have you ever thought to yourself, maybe college is too much money? Why should I have to go to school for 4 more years? Well, those are questions posed by many college students around Lyndon campus.

I spent one day walking around campus asking random people why they would go to college and why they would not want to. You would be surprised what the outcome is. Many said they came to college to learn. Yes, there were a few that said they were here to party and live it up. But on the flip side many students said that money was a huge issue for them, whether it was not being able to pay or not getting enough scholarships, they said that it was money, a few people said it was because they didn’t want to have to take a whole year of classes they have to spend 12 years of their life already doing.

College is not for everyone.

Why pay the twenty thousand dollars if you're just going to slack off? College is a great time to decide what you want in life, and most importantly, to gain independence. Sure, every college student is going to party at some point or another, but that does not mean party every weekend, I decided to go to college for many reasons. To this day, people ask me why I want to spend so much money, why I want to be a broke college student, and why stress myself over college? Despite all that, I know college will be worth it.

Soon, I hope to gain may real word strategies from my college education. The first and most important thing I hope to gain from this experience is independence. In my opinion, having a successful career of your own is one of the best things you can accomplish. The best matter to never have to worry about, is depending on other people. You never know what will happen to you in the future. You always want something to fall back on something and a college diploma is the perfect answer. The last component that I hope to gain from college is a great life experience that I will never forget. This is only my first semester as a freshman, but I can already predict that college is going to give me all these gifts.

The person who has high class totally imparity with other person who has low class ,such as Tom, in the mind of who is in the high social status, we can confirm this from the environment where Nick went to Tom's house for the first time, 'We walked through a high hallway into a bright rose-colored space, ...and then rippled over the wine-colored rug, making a shadow on it as wind does on the sea.' (Page10,Nick), From Nick's Description of the house ' high hallway into a bright rose-colored space' we can fully see Tom's wealth, thus reflecting Tom's social status, because in the United States at that time, your wealth would be related to your social status, so It is such a person with a high social class, the pursuit of love is just the satisfaction of the body, this can be reflected after Nick met Tom's wife, Tom talked with Nick about his lover whose name was Myrtle Wilson. “I want you to meet my girl. ”(Page27,TOM)” and after Tom quarreled with Gatsby in the hotel, he found that Gatsby and his wife were just in a spiritual love, which immediately relaxed him. “Oh—that’s all.’ Tom tapped his thick fingers together like a clergyman and leaned back in his chair”(Page 140, TOM) and what's even more striking is that, When Tom, Nick goes out with Tom's mistress, Tom buys a puppy for his mistress and said, “It’s a bitch, go and buy ten more dogs with it” (Page 31, TOM)in this case, Tom compares his mistress to a dog, for his mistress is because of money to those close to him, so combining these three points, in Tom's eyes, as long as it is what you want, not what is himself can't buy with money and power, and the love in his eyes, is merely physical love, after all, his wife and gates than even miss each other, in his eyes, as long as no physical relationship, that everything is not love, this also reflects the inseparable relationship between love and power. The higher the social status, the thinner the love.

Social status is related to the attitude towards feelings, so for Nick of middle class, he attaches great importance to feelings. First of all, we can see from Nick's description of himself that his social status is not at the top. He is a middle class who fights for his dream. "My own house was an eye-sore, but it was a small eye-sore, and it had been overlooked, …all for eighty dollars a month." ‘I’m a bond man.’(Page13,Nick ) We can see that this is the image of a middle class, and it is this middle class character that tells us what friendship is, also that's the second stage of Platonic love. In fact, at the beginning of the whole novel, “No—Gatsby turned out all right at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated … elations of men.” Nick begins to describe his admiration for Gatsby, and then gradually turns to his hatred for others. Nick is angry about why Gatsby cannot realize his dream and why this cruel society does not help Gatsby. And, after Gatsby dies, Nick will hear Gatsby's voice say: “Look here, old sport, you’ve got to get somebody for me. You’ve got to try hard. I can’t go through this alone”. This shows that Nick's thinking of Gatsby and Nick's importance to Gatsby, also “I can’t go through this alone” show us In Gatsby's mind, only Nick is standing on a line with himself, so in this kind of romantic love, the middle social class Nick stuck to his own test of friendship, because only Nick would end up with Gatsby

The lower the social class, the more sincere the feelings, Gatsby is the one that corresponds to this. We can see this from Gatsby for the first time when he asks Nick to meet his dream lover whose name is Daisy “‘I don’t want to do anything out of the way!’ he kept saying. ‘I want to see her right next door.’”.(P86,Gatsby) Gatsby's self-esteem and his initial status made him feel how weak his love was and only hoped that he could meet his former love again. All of this comes from Gatsby's background. “His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people—his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. The truth was that Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself”(P105,Gatsby) When Gatsby is not satisfied with his name, he creates a new self, that is Gatsby and his understanding of love is as great as his name. We can see it clearly from Gatsby prepare first meeting with Daisy at Nick’s house. “Gatsby in a white flannel suit, silver shirt and gold-colored tie hurried in. He was pale and there were dark signs of sleeplessness beneath his eyes” As can be seen from Gatsby's eye circles, Gatsby stayed up all night in preparation for meeting Daisy, and we can see the importance of Daisy to Gatsby. Meanwhile, when Nick tells Gatsby that time cannot go back to the past and Gatsby refutes Nick, he tells us Gatsby is crazy about Daisy. “I wouldn’t ask too much of her,’ I ventured. ‘You can’t repeat the past.”(P118) all these phenomena show that Gatsby is crazy about Daisy, and also shows the low-level people's reluctance to give up love?Gatsby, with Platonic spirit to love a rich material lady, with desire as the nutrient, with the lies for its irrigation, to support the noisy and luxurious dream of that era. So we saw a Gatsby standing on his lawn looking at the green light on Daisy's wharf on the other side, a Gatsby who was attracted to sit by Daisy only for a high-rise banquet, and a Gatsby who was so nervous that he lost his temper when meeting Daisy again.“Five years before the start of the novel, Jay Gatsby (who had learned from Dan Cody how to act like one of the wealthy) was stationed in Louisville before going to fight in WWI. In Louisville, he met Daisy Fay, a beautiful young heiress (10 years his junior), who took him for someone of her social class. Gatsby maintained the lie, which allowed their relationship to progress.” This completely shows the relationship between class and love. Only when Gatsby hides his real class from Daisy can Daisy accept Gatsby.

If you don't believe it, we can also talk about Wilson and his wife's love. Their love really confirmed the low-end of the society for love crazy, but also further confirmed the social status of love. Let's start by talking about Wilson's love for his wife, who was obsessed even after he found out that his wife was cheating on him, with the idea of taking her away from this chaotic class, when he found out that his wife had cheated on him, he locked her up at home. “I just got wised up to something funny the last two days,’ remarked Wilson. ‘That’s why I want to get away. That’s why I been bothering you about the car”(P132,George) and his whole life was transformed by his wife's infidelity “In the sunlight his face was green”(P131,George), we can see George Wilson's love for his wife and, if you ask me to retort that you didn't say that love is linked to social status, then why did George Wilson's wife cheat on him? And, if you ask me to retort that you didn't say that love is linked to social status, then why did George Wilson's wife cheat on him? In fact, the betrayal of Myrtle Wilson is more likely to show that money and power can have a huge impact on love, actually, at the beginning of the Wilson couple, there was a deep love for each other when there was no money and social status to erode their love. “Although Myrtle was taken with George at first, she overestimated his money and “breeding” and found herself married to a mechanic and living over a garage in Queens, a situation she’s apparently unhappy with (2.112)However, divorce was uncommon in the 1920s, and furthermore, the working-class Myrtle doesn’t have access to wealthy family members or any other real options, so she stays married – perhaps because George is quite devoted and even in some ways subservient to her. A few months before the beginning of the novel in 1922, she begins an affair with Tom Buchanan, her first affair (2.117). She sees the affair as a way out of her marriage, but Tom sees her as just another disposable mistress, leaving her desperate and vulnerable once George finds out about the affair.”  This document also shows the relationship between status and love from a positive perspective. Status can completely influence one's thoughts on love

When Nick first listens to a conversation in a hotel, Catherine said : “You were crazy about him for a while.” They were love each so much, there is no doubt about it, but the everything was changed when the Myrtle Wilson met the Tom. She starts to betray love, because she wants to become a member of the upper class, so her first step is to give up love, because we have said, the higher the class, the more indifferent to love, so she needs to do the first step, is to take her own love and give up the Platonic love. So, when the Myrtle Wilson met Tom, she know what she want, the high class. “It was on the two little seats facing each … was ‘You can’t live forever, you can’t live forever.”(P40,Myrty) She was transformed by the lure of class, by the abandonment of Plato's love and the abandonment of her loving husband. Also this means that Platonic love degenerates into a stepping stone to a higher class.

Combined with all things, social class and love are inextricably linked. The higher the social class, the thinner the feelings will be; the lower the social class, the more important the feelings will be?and the way to test love is to base it on Platonic love, and only the deep love of the soul can really prove your true love forever, therefore, in our life, we must be a faithful servant to love, and not a betrayal of love for class and money.

In the 21st century, the fear of failure hinders many from chasing who they want to be. Many rely on affirmation from their peers before they do anything that could lead to failure. Failure is detested by many and avoided at all costs. But what would happen if instead of constantly trying to succeed, we tried to fail? Failure is how we learn; it shows us who we are and what we are made of. Failure itself is the product of boldly trying something without concern of what others will think.

In his book, Chasing Failure, Ryan Leak tells of a time when he had the opportunity to meet his hero, Kobe Bryant. In preparation of meeting his absolute hero, Leak began thinking of things that he and his hero had in common. The day came and as Leak sat talking with Kobe Bryant, he got an idea for a documentary project. The project posed this question: what would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? For Leak, he would try out for the NBA. As he told Kobe his pitch, Kobe replied, “Do it.” A few weeks later, Ryan Leak, a nobody from Dallas, Texas showed up to try out for the Phoenix Suns. And he got exactly what he went for--failure. Leak says, “Chasing failure took me further than chasing success ever did” (Leak 40).

The fear of failure is, in fact, a phobia. Just like claustrophobia prevents one from enjoying the rush of a rollercoaster, atychiphobia certainly prevents one from encountering true success. In many cases of atychiphobia, people are so afraid of failing that they sabotage their own efforts by not even trying to succeed at a hard task (Marcin). However, people can only know if they will succeed if they at least try. By trying, the chance of succeeding is drastically increased. So maybe you fail, but what if you don’t?

Often we stop trying to move forward after failure. In a Harvard Business Paper, Peter Bregman reported, “When you fail half the time, figure out what you should do differently and try again. That’s practice. And according to recent studies, 10,000 hours of that kind of practice will make you an expert in anything. No matter where you start” (Bregman). This advice has proven true with some of the most successful people in history. Thomas Edison failed at inventing the light bulb over 1,000 times, and because of his failures, we now have light bulbs. Michael Jordan missed over 9,000 shots in his career, and because of persistence through his failures, he is one of the greatest basketball players of all time because he used his failure to propel him forward. The Beatles were told their music was out of style, but they rose above their fear of failing and became the best-selling music group of all time (Tate). It is evident that true success is, in fact, the fruit of failure.

Our world tells us to try new things only if you know for certain that you will succeed, and when you don’t, you should move on to a different dream. However, with this “safe” mindset, we short sell who we can really become and what we really can do. With big dreams comes great risk and with great risk comes great potential. Shooting for success is safe. But shooting for failure puts everything you have on the line. Want to be president? Run for office. Sure, you may receive criticism, but what if you don’t? Want to be a professional recording artist? Try out for American Idol. Maybe the judges will hate you, but they just might give you a golden ticket. Want to be in the NBA? Go try out for a team. You may get cut, but you just might make the roster. So here’s a proposal: just try to fail. In the pursuit of your wildest dream, you certainly will find what you’re made of.

Imagine yourself not being able to see with two eyes, but one. The author who has written many novels, short stories, proms, and essays about Civil and Women Right had experienced this hardship. Being different from everyone, she grew with she transformed being different to a talent of writing down her thoughts and imagination. Her talent if writing accomplished many works. This paper is about Alice Walker, her greatest work The Color Purple, and what critical evaluations had to say about her.

Alice Walker being the youngest out of eight children was born in Eatonton, Georgia on February 9, 1944 (Alice Malsenior). Walker grew up in a small house with extreme weather. Walker was uncomfortable with the weather and the spaces was hard to fight the seasons. Willie Lee (Alice Walker), Walker’s mother worked as a seamstress. Minnie Tallulah Grant Walker, Walker’s father worked as a sharecropper (Alice Malsenior) earning $300 yearly. Walker enjoyed what she called “people watching”. Walker called herself a tomboy because she enjoys being around her brothers. Walker stop being a tomboy, and her career started at age eight due to being shot in the eye by her brother (Alice Malsenior). In 1958 Alice disfiguring scar tissue in her eye was removed (Shackelford). Her brothers was afraid and had Walker to lie so that no one gets in trouble. Walker called the scar “hideous white scar”). The accident caused her to be blind, loneliness (Alice Malsenior) and kept poetry in her thoughts. Walker was afraid if she wrote it down on paper her brother would destroyed it (Cummings). One of Walker memory as a child was going to segregated school with great teacher. Her community encourage her to accept herself and to decide who she is.

Walker was in class of 1961 as prom queen and class valedictorian (Alice Walker). Walker earned a scholarship in Atlanta to Spelman College (Alice Malsenior) and it was the first black college (Alice Walker). The ending of freshman year at Spelman College she was invited by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Civil rights leader, to attend in Helsinki; Finland at the youth world Peace Festival (Cummings) at age twenty (Gentry et al). In 1963 Alice received another scholarship in New York to Sarah Lawrence. As a junior she transferred to study in Africa (Alice Malsenior). Walker was her mother findest hope out of seven brothers. In Africa she was pregnant, but she knew her parents hope would be destroyed (Gentry et al). The unexpected pregnancy that took her to almost suicide; Walker was able to perform a illegal abortion (Alice Walker). Walker slept with a blue razor for a week thinking about is she slash her hands off to solve problem. Walker stated to dream about Africa about her on the beat hearing and seeing beautiful animals. Walker then started to write (Gentry et al). After graduating from Sarah Lawrence with honors Alice worked in new York City and published Meridian (Alice Walker). Walker first job begin in Georgia in the voter registration with the Head Start Organization in Jackson, Mississippi (Alice Malsenior). During the summer Walk join NAACP Legal Defense Fund. It is an organization that helps to fight and freedom to the blacks in segregationist South (Alice Walker). In 1967 Walker met and married a lawyer name Melvyn Leventhal. They divorced in 1976 with one child name Rebecca (Alice Malsenior). Her commitment to helping black women was further demonstrated in her literacy. Walker build a 13 year relationship with Robert Allen (Alice Walker).

Walker first published piece in her poetry collection is called Once in 1968. In 1969 Walker was awarded by the national Endowment in Arts. In 1970 her work and teachings went world wide. Walker transfer to Tougaloo College and wrote her first novel called Third Life of Grange Copeland, and end up teaching there in 1917 (Alice Malsenior). In 1912 to 1973 Walker migrated North and started at Wellesley College and the University of Massachusetts at Boston. In 1973 Walker wrote her first short story called In Love and Trouble: Stories of Black Women and her second poetry; Revolutionary Petunias (Alice Malsenior). In 1971 to 1973 Walker won a Radcliffe Institute Fellowship, Rosenthal Foundation, and an American Academy. In 1974 Walker earn a award for Institute of Arts and letters from the book In Love and Trouble (Alice Malsenior). In 1976 Walker published her second novel Meridian. The novel was award in 1977 to 1978 by the Guggenheim. In 1978 she added another poem to her collection called Goodnight, Willie Lee, I’ll See You In The Morning (Alice Malsenior). In 1982 You Can’t Keep A Good Woman Down was added to her third novel called The Color Purple. With this novel she won a Pulitzer Prize along with the American Book Award. In 1983 Alice wrote In Search of Our Mother’s Garden: A Collection of Womanist Prose was add to her essay collections (Alice Malsenior). The Color Purple gave Walker many opportunities. Walker accepted many job offers at Universities and Colleges. The Color Purple did not become the most bestseller, but Alice allowed the movie rights to it. The Color Purple was filmed by Steven Spielberg (Cummings). In 1985 The Color Purple was made as an American dramatic film. The film focused on rural Southern United States of African American Women (The).

The novel, The Color Purple is a story told through letters from God One of the letter said, “you better not never tell nobody but God. It’d kill your mother.” The main character who was fourteen year old Celie was raped by her father who looks too much at Nettie, her little sister. Celie had a son and a daughter, but her father took them away from her. A man called Mr. was interested in Nettie but Pa rejects. Celie soon then took picture with Mr and he falls in love with her. Pa offered a cow from Mr and take Celie instead of Nettie. After marriage Celie was physical abuse by Mr. Celie has a daughter Olivia and ask Nettie to be the mother. Mr had kicked Nettie out due to rejection and running away from home. Both sisters could not do anything, but to send letters which Celie never received for any replies. Mr’s son Harpo marries Sofia but soon argued that she disobeys. Celie convinces Hapo to physically abuse Sofia, but Celie came to know is envious of Sofia. Mr has been seeing a lady her name is Shug Avery. Mr never allowed Celie to greet her. Celie learned to love herself and to love someone through Shug. Mr brought Shug home because she was ill. Celie has to take care of Shug until she felt better. During the time Shug had compose two songs, “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” and a song for Celie called “Cellie’s Song,” Shug wanted Celie to perform the two song and Celie felt the feeling of how important someone is. When Shug was not ill anymore she made sure that Mr will not physically beat Celie anymore. Shug had called Mr name, Albert when she left. Sofia has a new man with six kids, and she returned back to Harpo. Hapro young girlfriend who he called “Squeaks” fought with Sofia until she leaves. Sofia was asked by the mayor’s wife to be her maid. Sofia rejects and hits the mayor when he argued. Sofia was sent to prison. Squeaks now takes ares f Sofia’s children's. Squeaks finds out that the Warden is her Uncle, so she seeks freedom for Sofia. One thing Squeak had to so is to have sexual intercourse with him. Doing this will help Sofia free and to become the mayor slave. Squeak was furious and humiliated when returning home. Squeak told her husband to call her by her real name, Mary Anges. Shug and Celie met after Shug got married. They both found out that they missed each other. One night Celie tells Shug about her life when their husband went away. After telling her life Shug decides to kiss Celie and they both make love. Together Celie and Shug finds out Mr has been hiding the sister letters in his truck. Celie God letters was written in English Standard. One day Nettie decides to leave, but Mr tied to rape her. Unsuccessfully he failed but he promised that there would not be anything of her sister again. Nettie met Celie other son Adam and went to see Olivia’s other mother Corrine. Her husband Reverend Samuel was a member of Missionary Society. In New York she discovers is Harlen which was one of African culture. Nettie went to England, Senegal, and then Africa with Samuel. When they arrive and meet Olinkains They thought Adam and Oliva was Nettie and Sam’s children's. Olivia was the only educated girl there. Corrine became envous and told Nettie to knowledge the kids to not all her mama. Olivia had a best friend, Tashi was forbid to go to school until after her father passed away she was allowed to. In five years living in Africa Adam and Olivia have discover slave trades and African stories. The roads are getting closer to the Olinkas and the roads are getting closer to the Olinkas and that would cause danger. For his ceremony Celie sold her pants there. Shug has left Celie alone and lonely. Celie last letter ever received talked about her son Adam married Tashi. Celie and Shug are together again after she rejects Mr. Sofia and Harpo are together. Nettie, Samuel, and her kids are home (The Marie).

The setting for The Color Purple is in 1910-1940 in Rural Georgia (SparkNotes) at the of WWII (The Sara). The historical novel contains factual events, little dates, few details of character ages (SparkNotes), but the film only took some dates for reference (The Sara). Part of the novel took place in Africa and learning the Olkans culture (SparkNotes). Fleming the interior were two-story house and exterior was a farm (The Sara).

Harpo is Albert son and father of six kids. Warden Tom Hodges is the police officers who took Sofia. Kate was Albert siter. Mama is Celie mother who become il. Mayor putted Sofia in jail due to insulting. Mr is Celie husband who abused her. Nettie is Celie younger sister. Olivia is Celie daughter. Prizefighter was Sofia new boyfriend to make Harpo jealous. Sofia is Harpo wife who leaves him, but returns afterwards. Swain was the music performer at jukepoint. Tashi is Adam wife. Tobias is Mr bother who help him take care of Shung (The Marie).

The two themes of the novel The Color Purple (SparkNotes) movies on disappointments to create strong self- confidence (The Sara). The first theme is the strong love of a female relationship (SparkNotes). Celie strength was shown by being raped and victimized to protect her sister Nettie (The Sara). The second theme is the hatred of race and sexism (SparkNotes). Shug’s power was that she had told many women together (The Sara).

This novel is explained through Celie voice in first person. It tells the life story of a thirty year life of an independent African American went through. The symbol is hope of each black person just like Celie (The Marie). “Sophie Walk” this song supported the women strength and control of life in scenes of Nettie letters. Two songs that were meant to inspire the audience was “Miss Celie’s Blues”and “Maybe God Is Trying To Tell You Sometin’.” The strong family males the mood a response form the audience (The Sara). The tone of each letter tells sharply. They were not sad letters, but letters of hope (The Marie). The costume has base on rural south in twentieth century (The Sara).

Walker theme is to focus on black women who controls their life with self knowledge and love. This is a novel that presents a beautiful selection of her work. Her publication dates, her life, and bibliography were all arranged in chronological order. Her mentor, Zora Neale Hurston was the footsteps she took of when writing (Shackelford).

The Color Purple not only showed the suffering of Celie, but the happiness in her life. Her sister and Shug were the two women who comforted her in her lifetime. The audience was wrenching when they both separated. No matter how fat they were apart, help one another to survive, rapes, beating, and subjugation. It shows us the strength to endure. The Color Purple results tells us the suffering and how a sister love can cure all (The Sara).

The Color Purple proceeded Walker arts. Her excellent arts placed in the Faulkner Company. Being part of the company she managed to shift from first person to a naive character Celie the 14-years-old. With her experience and for us to understand she never gave up the southern fictional tradition. She made it all her own and knowledge us all (Alice Malsenior). “The first time I saw it. I was in this theater with about two other people, and it looked funny. It sounded funny, and i thought everyone was a cartoon. So i went into the premier thinking “This is a brave thing to do since you think this is very terrible film.’ With hundreds of other people, it was a wonderful film. I really enjoyed it. It’s not the book but the fact is Quincy Jones and Steven Spielberg did try their best. They love it and they worked really hard,” Alice said to her critics (Whitaker).

Alice Walker literature The Color Purple inspired many with her art. Walker might not experience the same thing as Celie did, but Walker deliver her messages for her readers through her characters and dialogues. Walker hidden talent and achievements define her who is she present day. No matter how different you can be or how different everyone thinks, everyone has their own audience and hidden talent.

Robots Replacing Humans

Artificial Intelligence has become impressively efficient. In some cases, it can complete certain tasks even better than humans. AI has made some amazing progress and it will continue improving. One of the most important aspects of AI is its ability to finish chores and speeding up tasks. Some people might think that robots cannot compete with humans in the job market because they are not able to think or be creative, however, in a near future, AI is going to have a strong negative impact on the job market because robots will increase efficiency and complete almost any task faster than humans.

Robots can be more efficient than humans and they make fewer mistakes in terms of completing any task that requires to be focused and concentrated. Moreover, the capacity of data that a robot can have is massively comparing to humans. AI has a big influence on preventing human error. Having to worry about daily life problems can lead humans to get easily distracted. People have emotions and feelings robots don’t. According to “The Risk of Artificial Intelligence” by Bianca Nogrady, “The leading approach to AI right now is machine learning, in which programs are trained to pick out and respond to patterns in large amounts of data, such as identifying a face in an image or choosing a winning move in a board game”(1). Machine learning is being used in a lot of devices lately. For a human will be almost impossible to memorize such a large amount of data to complete a task as efficient and precise as a robot can do it. This factor position humans in a disadvantage on the job market against robots.

Machines don’t get tired, don’t need a break, or take a day off, also, they are able to produce with little maintenance in faster peace than humans do. According to Clara Moskowitz, “Human-Robot Relationship: Why We Should Worry,” Artificial Intelligence is being used in procedures that would take people too long to be worth doing, due to the huge amounts of information that is analyzed. Most companies don’t want to waste their time, therefore, they are trying to used AI as much as they can in order to stay competitive. As a result, they are replacing workers with machines which is more cost efficient. Humans need medical benefits and work insurance. In contrast, machines only need to be repaired or replaced it, and that can be cheaper for employers. The more likely jobs that are going be replaced sooner, are those that require manufacturing labor. Some machines can be operated with one or two persons and do the work of many more. Having fewer workers and producing more at the same time, it’s convenient for employers but not too much for employees.

In conclusion, Artificial Intelligence will take jobs that were once created by humans, robots are becoming more efficient and faster to complete tasks than humans. The effect on the job market will lead to fewer job opportunities for humans, probably sooner to those with lower education. During the next years will be necessary for a lot of people to be willing to learn as many skills as they can in order to be prepared for automation.

Why Neurology is Important

Pharmacology is the study of the composition, uses, and the effects of drugs. There are four subdivisions to pharmacology that tell us about drugs and the body and they are: pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacotherapeutics and toxicology. Pharmacokinetics is what the body does to drugs such as absorption, distribution, metabolism, etc. The study of what effect drugs have on the body is pharmacodynamics which includes the effect of drugs and the mechanisms of drug action. The use of drugs in treating diseases is pharmacotherapeutics and an example of this is chemotherapy. Toxicology is the study of poisons (Pellicio, Pharmacology Lecture, 2018).

The nervous system is made up of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system is compose of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system is composed of all the nerves that exit the spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system is further broken down to autonomic nervous system that controls the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, and the somatic nervous system that controls voluntary actions. The sympathetic nervous system activates the “fight or flight or freeze” responses of the body while the parasympathetic nervous system brings us down, relaxes and conserves energy (Pellicio, Neuroscience and Psychoactive Drugs PowerPoint, 2018).

A basic diagram of the nervous system is found below:

The brain communicates through a process called neurotransmission. This is when nerve cells called neurons transmit both chemical and electrical signals. These are known as the messengers of the brain. Neurons send impulses to one another and to other cells outside the nervous system. These neurons never touch each other and this impulse is called an action potential. The impulse originates in the dendrite (the finger like projection surrounding the cell body and nucleus) which then gets integrated into the cell body and then transmitted down the axon to the synaptic knob. After that it goes to the synaptic vesicles and then to the synaptic gap where the neurotransmitters release the chemical signal. The next neuron then picks up the chemical signal and through the repetition of sequential events the nerve impulse is conducted (Pellicio, Neuroscience and Psychoactive Drugs PowerPoint, 2018).

The reward center in the brain is responsible for driving our feelings as well as our motivations (Pellicio, Neuroscience and Psychoactive Drugs Lecture, 2018). This area of the brain was discovered in 1954 by James Olds and Peter Milner, during Olds’ experiments on rodents. During these experiments Olds implanted rats with electrodes into their nucleus accumbens, which is one of the brain’s regions that is involved in the brain reward circuit. The rodents would tap on the button which would then lead to stimulation of an electrode and neuronal structure. The outcome would be that hungry animals would demonstrate a preference for self-stimulation over food and drink to the point of starvation. This stimulation became even more rewarding than survival behaviors (Pellicio, Neurobiology of Addiction PowerPoint, 2018).

The primary neurotransmitter of the reward pathway is dopamine, and drugs of abuse share the same common action that they increase dopamine levels (Pellicio, Neurobiology of Addiction PowerPoint, 2018). Dopamine naturally increases in response to rewards such as food, sex, water and nurturing; which is why it is known as “the feel good chemical” (Pellicio, The Reward Circuit PowerPoint, 2018). When cocaine is taken, dopamine increases are exaggerated and communication is altered (Pellicio, Neurobiology of Addiction PowerPoint, 2018). This causes addiction over time reinforcing the behavior as rewarding or pleasurable causing loss of control for the individual requiring a higher dose to achieve the same effect (Pellicio, Introduction to the Brain PowerPoint, 2018).

Although most drug abusers start out as recreational users, over time the individual experiences an urgent need or powerful desire for drugs. Unfortunately the very same reward system that ensures our survival also rewards the negative behavior of drug use. This causes the individual to continuously repeat these harmful behaviors. Addictive substances and behaviors also trigger the release of dopamine which in turn rewards an individual with a pleasant sensation. In turn pushing an individual to repeat these harmful behaviors over and over again despite the negative outcomes and potential deadly side-effects.. The circuit most associated with reward is in the mesolimbic pathway found in the brain stem. Within this pathway there is an area called the ventral tegmental area (VTA). The VTA communicates with the nucleus accumbens which is also known as the reward center within the brain. When a drug is taken it releases varying amounts of dopamine into the nucleus accumbens. Although different drugs have different effects in the nucleus accumbens they all activate the same reward system (A. Tom Horvath, 1995-2018).

In conclusion the brain is a very delicate yet highly adaptive organ. Our brains play a vital role in every bodily function we possess. By taking drugs or medications we alter the very delicate balance within our bodies be it for the good or the bad. In the case of taking illegal substances the delicate functions of our brain can be disrupted and a negative response can occur even though the individual finds it rewarding. On the other hand some prescribed medications can be used to alter our brain chemistry for a better outcome. An example of this is someone who is depressed is given an SSRI and a positive result occurs. The brain is an amazing organ that is still being studied today and all these studies that are out there show us how we’ve only discovered partially what the brain is capable of.

Challenges College Students Face

As more students pursue higher education at tertiary institutions such as college, cases of extreme stress increase dramatically, due to the increased competition and higher expectations given to them during their academic career. At this point in life, students face various stressful events in life which include academics, career-related issues, family problems, social relationships, finances, personal appearance, personal health issues and sleep difficulties. (Harvard Medical School,2018) Furthermore, college challenges students to juggle these different aspects of their lives independently, oftentimes without the full support of their family. As a result, stress becomes a part of a student’s everyday life. However, it does not necessarily mean that it will bring about a bad outcome in the student’s academic life. This is because there are two types of stress, “Eustress” and “Distress”. According to (Selye, 1974), eustress is the beneficial type of stress, since it is associated with positive feelings and healthily physical states whereas distress is the unwanted type of stress, associated with negative feelings, such as demotivation and disturbed physical states.

This essay will be addressing how both eustress and distress can affect a college student’s academic performance in different circumstances. Furthermore, it will also address how a student’s coping mechanisms for both types of stress can affect their academic success in college. Environmental stress College is an important transitional stage in life, where a student must face many changes in their life that come with adulthood. Firstly, it comes with environmental changes such as moving to a different city or country for their studies. Secondly, the level and method of learning between high school and college are extremely different. These few factors cause students to experience a form of ‘culture shock’. Their experiences are akin to the ones faced by people experiencing a different country for the first time. There are five stages to this; the honeymoon, culture shock, initial adjustment, mental isolation, acceptance and integration according to Zeller and Mosier (1993). Changes such as living far from home and having to deal with managing their own dorm with a roommate will cause a student to draw comparisons between their college environment and home environment, resulting in homesickness. Furthermore, the expectations the student may have had of college life during the honeymoon stage of culture shock would have shattered, resulting in them realising the reality of college life. Another factor that goes under environmental changes would be the differences in the level of learning in college compared to high school. It is considered a change that can cause a student to feel insecure about their academic abilities over time. For example, students who did very well in high school and begin to barely pass in college are prone to this insecurity as reality did not go along with their expectations that were formed in high school. Insecurities caused by this will pair up with expectations that their family have placed upon them to upkeep their grades and result in distress. Without intervention and the correct coping methods, this can lead to depression, social anxiety and dropping out of school. In fact, “First-year college students facing the emotional transition to university life are at a higher risk of suffering from depression as their emotional state is impacted by new social networks, academic stress and living arrangements.” (Brandy et al., 2015) Personal and Social stress As mentioned earlier, since, college is a transitional stage in life for many students, it is a time where they begin to worry about their self-image as well as begin to consider their sexual orientations and religious beliefs. Questioning of sexual orientations could lead to a student discovering that they fall under the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) spectrum which is a population that is socially stigmatized even to this day.

According to the minority stress model (Meyer, 2003), populations that are socially stigmatized face chronic stress due to prejudice and discrimination, which can put them at risk for poor mental health. This can result in them developing an inferiority complex as they do not feel accepted within society due to microaggressions against them especially in social situations and from family. To combat this form of stress, students will have to seek support groups run by people whom they can relate to. As a result, their stress induces a positive result in their development and mental health. A student who is proud of their identity and beliefs is a confident student who will motivate themselves and others to do well in their academics. College puts students through situations that constantly require them to be actively social in varying degrees ranging from group work with classmates to parties which require a lot of intermingling with friends and new social circles. These situations normally result in cases of social anxiety. Social anxiety causes students to deeply fear being rejected, criticized, judged, or simply seen unfavourably when having to perform. (Yip,2013) Furthermore, students find it difficult to make a close circle of friends in their first year of college. Dr. Nancy Stockton, director of the Counselling and Psychological Services at Indiana University, mentions that, it is very stressful for students when they do not immediately have the deep friendships that they have with people who understand them and have lived through many of their life’s experiences with them like the communities they have had at home. (Reed & College, 2015) Stress about the future caused by Academic Stress Some students will feel stressed when they reflect about their chances at future careers if their academic performance drops.

In fact, a study of two thousand students in their senior year of college in the United States of America showed that a fear of low grades and eventual job market failure played major roles in exam stress. (Blood, 2015) It is crucial that students have access to education that informs them of the different ways in which they can study to cope with their academic stress. There are also other methods of coping with academic stress such as exercising with friends. By doing so, a student will have enforced their social connections and formed new bonds. A study found that “college students who engaged in vigorous exercise for twenty minutes at least three days a week were less likely to report poor mental health and stress.” (DeBenedette, 2013)

Ralph and Jack in Lord of the Flies

“The battle between good and evil runs through the heart of every man” - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. We truly have to be in a situation of life and death in order to know if we are internally good or internally bad. Lord of the Flies by William Golding, gives an accurate representation of what happens when limits, restrictions, and rules are removed through Jack. Initially, all boys want to construct a system of rules but savagery ensues almost immediately within. Ralph is not able to maintain civilization because Jack decides a major change to happen. He [Jack] eventually ends up with power and his most basic desires to be ruler. When there are no limitations to being free, Jack turns reckless and deteriorates the group through a series of progressions.

Jack enters the novel as a knowledgeable english boy that is aggressive yet welcoming to the rest of the group. After the plane crashes Jack is on Ralph's side and supports him on the topic of being rescued. He as well as the rest of the group ,do not realize that rescue will not come anytime soon. As he supports Ralph in his statement that follows, he is looking for democracy and being mature enough to choose a leader instead of automatically spreading around the island, “‘We’ve got to decide about being rescued.’”(22). Throughout the novel thus far this is the only moment where he has common sense and actually cares about the situation he and the other boys are currently in. Jack then realizes that someone needs to assign jobs, and he volunteers to take the job of hunting, not only for a small portion but for the group as a whole. He along with the littluns notice a pig run across from them. The text states, “‘We’ll get food’ cried Jack ‘ Hunt. catch things… until they fetch us.’”(30). Since he has only seen a pig, all that is in his mind is to hunt, and eat in order to survive. Now food is not a problem to him and now the rest of the group. Here he is still civilized and cares about feeding the others and volunteers to take on a serious job.

Killing pigs in his own skin does not seem right to him, so he paints his face to have a different persona. He wants to be liberated not only from the other boys but himself. When he kills the pig in his own skin, he feels shame and self consciousness, so he takes on the role of a whole different persona.(CC) He then dramatically changes his own original person and actions, “Jack planned his new face. He made one cheek and eye socket white, then he rubbed red over the other half of his face and slashed a black bar of charcoal across from the right ear to the left jaw… he looked in astonishment no longer at himself but at an awesome stranger”(63). Now that he sees himself as a stranger he feels free to let out his inner beast. As he paints his face, it removes a part of civilization and humanity. After he does begins to slaughter and starts ordering around, the boys obey the commands given by Jack because “the mask compelled them”(). As soon as he realizes they actually do more when he has the mask on, he gets relieved a little from responsibilities. He now doesn’t need another form to tell them he is the one in charge. As he wears the mask, it gives that level of freedom so that later it makes it easier for the evil inside him to come out.

Jack wants to integrate fear into the littluns by placing the pigs’ head on a stick so they can feel like the only safe place is with him since he is a hunter and now the one in charge. He says that it is to be offered as a gift. He thinks that the best tool to bring all the boys on his side is to apply in fear. The easiest way to do so is to offer the dead pig “‘This head is for the beast. It is a gift.’”(131). Since the littluns are confused on the reality of the beast, Jack places fear in them so they can join his tribe and make it bigger. He wants them far away from civilization and innocence. At this point, he has lost all of his former fear and now feels confident with his ability to make the littluns follow him. None of them have a right to talk because if so then they will vanish like Simon and Piggy. This is what Jack wanted the fear to do to them. All of them have to obey, they have no other choice. Jack has now become the dictator because he wants to be superior over everybody else. He wants everyone under his rule, “Suddenly Jack bounded out from the tribe and began screaming wildly. ‘See? See? That’s what you’ll get! I meant that. There isn’t a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone--’”(181). Jack is now a killer that is full of pride and does not care about what he does since there are no consequences for his wrong doings. He is no longer interested in killing animals for food but killing humans for dominance and power. Throughout his whole progression he obviously bites off more than he can chew with power.

When limitations cease to exist in the group, Jack takes advantages of the certain situations and does whatever he desires. The group initially had plans on what to do when they had crashed. It began with Ralph giving ideas on how to survive then Jack scrambling them up and ruining everything. Ralph cannot maintain the group civilized as it soon spirals into Jacks’ evil dominance. Jack obliterated everything that could have saved them a long time ago as a group. Rules first imply then cease to exist because of evil behavior.

Observation of a Nine-Month Old Infant, Susie

Stranger anxiety is a common expression of fear to unfamiliar adults in infants six months to two years old (Berk, 2013). In this paper, I will discuss my experience in holding and observing an infant who is unfamiliar with strangers along with my expectations and assumptions of my experience with her. This will include describing physical, cognitive, and psychosocial characteristics. I will also be integrating the course readings while discussing how this experience pertains to the readings.

Susie is a breast-fed healthy nine-month old chubby little girl with blonde hair, blue eyes, and milky white skin. Being a breast-fed infant, Susie received a nutritious diet with the correct balance of fat and protein through her mother’s breast milk (Berk, 2013). As chubby babies with nutritious diets grow, they thin out as weight gain slows as they become more active (Berk, 2013).

Relating to Piaget’s stages of cognitive development, Susie displayed behaviors of the sensorimotor stage by using her eyes, ears, and hands as a way to think when she shook her toy rattle to make a sound (Berk, 2013). When she dropped food and looked for it on the floor, she showed object permanence by understanding the food still existed even though it was no longer in site (Baril & Corneal, 2010).

During my experience with Susie, I was able to observe a psychosocial characteristic of social referencing. Studies show a caregiver can influence an infant’s response to an unfamiliar situation by their emotional expression (Berk, 2013). Susie looked to her mother, Mary, for emotional information in an uncertain and new experience of being held by a stranger (Berk, 2013). She displayed this by consistently checking for approval and responding based on Mary’s

Reactions to her whining

When Mary reassured Susie, it was ok to be held by a stranger her emotion was happiness and contentment. As I approached Susie, being held by her mother I could instantly see her reaction was to grab onto her mother tighter. She was hesitant to trust me, immediately began to cry and reach back towards her mother. Her reaction displayed she has a secure attachment to her mother. Susie used her mother as a secure base and when I separated her from Mary, she began to cry, preferring to be with her mother versus me – the stranger (Berk, 2013). I reacted to her hesitance by speaking to her in a soft, calm voice before I took her from her mother.

Although Susie displayed stranger anxiety by crying when I initially took her from her mother, by responding to her warmly and playfully she quickly showed positive and curious behavior and stopped crying (Berk, 2013). Referring to Thomas and Chess’s temperament classifications, Susie displayed the temperament of an easy child (Baril & Corneal, 2010). Overall, she was cheerful and adapted easily to the new experience of being held by a stranger.

After I took Susie from her mother, she cried. Mary responded by softly stroking Susie’s head and calmly telling her it was ok. Next, I walked into another room without Mary and Susie began to display separation anxiety by becoming more upset when her mother was gone (Berk, 2013). After being in another room without Mary, Susie was easily calmed. According to the four phases on how attachment develops, Susie displayed she was in the clear-cut phase by exhibiting separation anxiety when her mother was not in the same room (Berk, 2013).

Suggestions from Mary on how to soothe Susie made it easier to establish trust between Susie and me. She explained how much Susie loves food. With this information, I made the decision that offering Susie a snack would be the easiest way to gain her trust. According to Erickson’s theory, because Susie received a balance in care of sympathy and love from her parent, her understanding of basic trust versus mistrust is positive (Berk, 2013). Unlike a mistrustful infant who cannot depend on the kindness of others, Susie felt confident in exploring this new experience (Berk, 2013).

Prior to holding Susie, I assumed it would be difficult to take her from her mother, that she would cry and be extremely difficult to soothe. I based these assumptions of my prior knowledge that Susie has a strong secure attachment to her mother with minimal exposure to strangers. Similar to my knowledge of Susie having minimal exposure to strangers, I have experienced leaving my children with a caregiver that they were unfamiliar with. The experience of my children being distraught after leaving them strengthened my assumption that Susie would be upset and difficult to soothe.

My experience in holding Susie was different than what I expected. Based on my assumptions of Susie being a difficult infant, I expected to spend ten minutes of this experience trying to soothe a nine-month-old baby that is not familiar with strangers. I also expected to be reassuring her mother that Susie is fine while she cried. To my surprise, it was not difficult at all to soothe her and Mary was calm in allowing Susie to participate in a new experience. I was able to experience Susie display behaviors that I normally would have overlooked such as object permanence. I was also able to recognize the relationship between a parent and infant bringing to life the theories being discussed in the course reading such as secure attachment.

This experience both confirmed and altered my original assumption of Susie. Observing how she interacted with her mother confirmed my assumption that she had a strong secure attachment to Mary. However, my original assumption was altered when I learned she did not have a difficult temperament and was easily soothed. Also, because of my original assumptions of how this experience was going to be coupled with how Susie actually behaved, I learned that parents can use social referencing to teach infants how to respond to everyday events (Berk, 2013). Mary’s emotions and responses to Susie’s reactions to an unfamiliar situation aided in how easily she was soothed.

In conclusion, I learned through this experience that although an infant shows stranger anxiety and/or separation anxiety the level of anxiety and ability to soothe an infant depends on the current situation and the temperament of the infant (Berk, 2013).

Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Introduction

The book  created by Chimamanda Adichie, set in post-colonial Nigeria during the Civil War in the late years of 1960s, it is a bildungsroman that focuses highly on family relationships and also highly on religion and cultural ideals. The text describing Kambili and Jaja’s first meal at their Aunty Infeoma’s home in Nsukka, Nigerian provides a stark contrast to the oppressive atmosphere in Enugu as a effect of Papa’s abusive nature. The freedom and fun of Aunty Ifeoma’s home despite their economic limitations bewilders Kambili, while walking around with the background on her life and exposing her to radically diverse values and beliefs. Adichie foreshadows the growth of Kambili’s character mentilly through the immense contrast between her own house with her family and the Nsukka’s home open and loving environment.

Body paragraph

Adichie shows the symbolic setting in this novel to powerfully convey the disparity in attitudes of Kambili’s and Aunty Ifeoma’s families. The difference between wealth is handled with frequently, showing that better material satisfaction is not as needed as the spiritually nurturing environment of Nsukka. Adichie uses natural imagery while explaining the dining table in the second paragraph of the extract, mentioning the “wood that cracked in dry weather” and the simile of “the outermost layer was shedding, like a molting cricket, brown slices curling up from the surface.” The reference to natural cycles indicates that Aunty Ifeoma’s progressive attitudes; her encouragement of natural expansion of outlook and social skills. This is in direct contrast with the naïve voice of Kambili, which is obvious in the parallel syntax featured through most of her narrative. However, the picturing of the “molting cricket” suggests that in this setting, Kambili will undergo change, maturing and perhaps acquiring a different look on her family’s relations and Christian zeal. This notion is reinforced by the image of “brown slices curling up” which implies nourishment and has somewhat of an aesthetic worth.

Body paragraph 2

Kambili’s emotional response to the startlingly different setting of Aunty Ifeoma’s house that is conveyed by Adichie gives us insight into the change that begins to get into her during her visit to Nsukka. At first, she is viewed to be very passive, like a time when Adichie writes she “followed Amaka back into the kitchen and watched her slice and fry…”, using verbs only to describe Amaka. As the meal commences, Kambili feels more and more uncomfortable, mentioning she “tried to concentrate, tried to get the food down”, the anadiplosis implying her intense insecurity while faced with the free speech of her cousins. This tumult signals the inner conflict that Kambili will face as she is exposed to the lifestyle in her Aunt Infroma’s home, possibly effecting in a more independent and confident personality. Kambili is clearly astonished at the constant vibe of conversation between her cousins and Aunty Infeoma Adichie writes, “Laughter floated over my head”, using verbs to show the uninhibited enjoyment that Kambili is not a part of, but longs for. The metaphor also suggests that simply by breathing this laughter, by existing in this setting, Kambili is gradually being imbued with the enjoyment around her. The noise seems almost tangible to her, creating a striking contrast to the motif of silence seems to enshroud her beforehand.

Adichie reiterates the freedom and spontaneity in the household, continuing the paragraph with “Words spurted from everyone”, using the abrupt and unassuming connotations of the verb to underline once more the more disorderly yet more intimate surroundings in Aunty Ifeoma’s home. The use of parallel syntax in “often not seeking and not getting any response” captures the cousins’ contribution to the family dynamic through the simple act of sharing a stream of consciousness. They seem to maintain equilibrium, enhancing the family unity and intimacy. Kambili feels that the speech lacks purpose, as she mentions rather proudly, “we always spoke with a purpose back home”; this is very ironic, however, since we are familiar with the superficial compliments made to please Papa during mealtime. Her apprehension to this type of unrestrained dialogue exposes her severely limited social interaction, which is clearly likely to be improved during her stay amongst her talkative relatives. In a sense, Kambili’s inner conflict mirrors the beginning of the age of enlightenment, when the Western world emerged from a stagnant period in history due to the repression of Christianity. Adichie insinuates that with regards to Kambili and Jaja, the mere verbal engagement of the characters is an integral catalyst for Kambili’s independence and perhaps firmer stance in the family conflict.

Body paragraph 4

The characterization of Aunty Ifeoma and her children is an important element that influences Kambili’s perceptions and feelings aspirations. Aunty Ifeoma’s assertion that “Today we’ll treat Kambili and Jaja as guests, but from tomorrow they will be part of the family and join in the work…” incorporates a rapid change in time frame and reflects her straightforward, welcoming nature. Adichie suggests the possibility that due to the open and loving atmosphere at Nsukka, Kambili will experience more of a family spirit with her aunt than with her own family in Enugu. The sarcasm with which Aunty Ifeoma tells Kambili, “We do not say Mass in the name of grace like your father does” emphasizes her rejection of the rules Papa imposes on his family; Kambili is introduced for the first time to thoughts and values that distinctly oppose her father’s. Her pronounced silence accentuates the impact of the constant use of dialogue by Amaka, Obiora and Chima, much of which is punctuated with exclamation marks. For example, when Chima says, “ ‘Mommy! I want the chicken leg’ ”, Adichie demonstrates the ease with which even the youngest child can express himself. Kambili’s excruciating shyness and independence, illustrated by her lack of dialogue, is in stark relief, and the powerful presence of her cousins within the binary opposition seems to foreshadow Kambili’s gradually budding confidence. Amaka and Obiora’s speech is paired with actions, such as in “Obiora pushed at his glasses as he spoke”, emphasizing their comparative presence not only verbally but also through body language. Her discomfort and insecurity in this lively setting implies that she envies these qualities in her cousins, and her envious tone while stating, “but my cousins seemed to simply speak and speak and speak” shows her desire to be as courageous as her cousins. Adichie thus prepares Kambili for a process of self-realization and maturity. The lack of caesura in the last line of the extract implies that Kambili’s cousins’ speech is ongoing and fast paced, highlighting their continual energy and social competence. Kambili’s admiration of this capability serves as a hopeful indication of her development as a character.

Conclusion

Adichie’s juxtaposition of the different lifestyles and outlooks of Papa and Aunty Ifeoma’s family in the bildungsroman Purple Hibiscus prepares for the gradual changes that take place in the main adolescent characters. The jarring difference in Aunty Ifeoma’s perspectives and Kambili’s own father’s contribute to the inception of a desire to find her own voice and question the his destructive dominance over the family. Adichie highlights the painfulness of this process for Kambili, and thus expresses her disdain for the highly oppressive environment the religious fanatic Papa creates for his children, severely damaging their social and inquisitive capacities in spite of the generous support he provides to the overall community. The families’ microcosms mirror the post-colonial situation of Nigeria, portraying the oppressive government and the spreading dissent of the population, leading to a critical conflict that may lead to significant change in the state of affairs.

Toxic Masculinity: what it is and how it Manifests itself

Toxic masculinity exists in every culture. The determination to prove oneself, evolves from childhood to adulthood. Men feel they need to prove to everyone that they are “real men” by performing risky actions. They feel they need to take on the world, pushing their limits; in different situations, whether it is defending the honor of their family, loved one, or simply their own. Jennifer K. Bosson and Joseph A. Vandello state that men repeatedly try to up their status and manhood. The patriarchy, all throughout history has always been at the top of the social ladder. Men feel like it is a right to have a higher status than a woman. They constantly need to prove themselves in order to keep that status, that is where toxic masculinity comes into play. Men who acts out in violence feel like it is justified simply because they are men. Situations such as domestic abuse often occur simply because men, historically are power hungry, yet they still feel it is a right. Different cultures support the thought that a stronger man is far better than a weaker man, or a submissive man.

Physical and social reasons that are explained in Bosson and Vandello’s study shows that men are more likely to act out when defending one's honor or when the status of their manhood is threatened. Not only is this a toxic relationship to have with oneself but this can cause problems in relationships and in their future. The relationships they have now or will have, will suffer and most of the time end aggressively. Men feel like they need to push the limits or boundaries in order to achieve a higher status. The studies conducted show that men are more likely to support the acts of aggression and be more understanding, whereas a woman will disagree with said actions. Men are taught to not show emotion, to not be reasonable when it comes to feelings. They put their feelings aside and choose to do whatever action that will increase their status. They are determined to do anything that proves to others that they are a strong and dominant man.

Many different cultures have a different meaning of what it is to be a man. Some Asian cultures believe that a man represents the whole family, that honor is the most important. Just like in the Asian culture, Mexican culture also believes that the man should live with honor, should be a person of great strength, and should decide everything. Growing up in a very strict Mexican family, the man was always the one to make the decisions, the woman was the one who always would wait on the man. As a daughter the responsibilities included making food, to cook and clean, and to be at foot and hand of the man in charge. My brothers, on the other hand, had to learn how to do manual labor. They were the ones pushed to constantly do well in school and they overall were always taught to never be emotional. They were told to never cry, or to show deep emotions. They had to keep going and not dwell on their feelings. Not only was this shown in my family, but also with other relatives and friends. Most guys do not want to show emotion because they believe it is a sign of weakness.

The idea that men need to prove they are “real men” is one that has been touched upon all throughout history. Men have always been the ones to call the shots or the ones to have power. Toxic masculinity is a real thing, and it exists in every culture. The belief that a boy or man should not cry, or show any “weak” emotion, is not healthy. They are not able to talk about how they feel, rather they are told to stop being weak or to stop “acting like a girl”.

Abortion as a Topic of Debate

Abortion is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy before a child can be born. People who oppose abortion are typically against it due to religious or moral reasons. Access to safe and legal abortions is a basic human right despite these personal and moral objections and it is not the government’s place to interfere with a woman’s rights. There are several reasons a woman should be allowed access to abortions. For one, an abortion could end a pregnancy that endangers the life of the mother and the child. Second, a woman could be at a point in her life where a baby would drastically interfere with her work aspirations or school. It’s also possible that the woman can not afford to take care of the child. Lastly, the pregnancy could be the result of a sexual assault, child abuse, or incestual relations.

There are multiple medical conditions that can cause a woman to have a high-risk pregnancy. For example, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition in which a woman’s ovaries produce more of a certain type of hormone than normal. High levels of these hormones can cause cysts, or fluid filled sacs, to form within the ovaries. Potential risks for a pregnant woman with this condition include developing high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and an increased risk of endometrial cancer. Potential risks for the baby include premature birth, miscarriage and a low Apgar score, which indicates that the baby is not doing well outside of the womb. Another medical condition that could cause serious complications is endometriosis. This is a condition that occurs when the cells that would normally line the uterine cavity are found outside of the uterus instead. With this condition, there is a higher chance that a pregnant woman can give birth to her child too early or the child can be too small when it is born. This can lead to another set of medical problems for the child. Some may argue that “the law should treat abortion like any homicide (Jones).” This argument stands on the idea that life begins at conception, therefore abortion would be murdering a living human being and taking away its human right to live. However, studies have shown that a fetus becomes viable, or able to live outside the womb, at 24 weeks. That being the case, an abortion before 24 weeks would not and should not be considered murder. In the event that abortion is outlawed, or outright criminalized, it can be hypothesized that women would still seek illegal abortions that could end in death or destroy the chance of a woman becoming pregnant down the line. “[A]dding hurdles that force women to obtain an abortion later in pregnancy—or to seek out options on their own, such as online medications of unknown quality—is bad for women’s health. (Grossman)” In 1964, a time in which abortions were considered a felony, Connecticut woman Gerri Santoro died due to hemorrhaging from a home abortion. Santoro escaped a situation of domestic abuse, and in fear of her own and life and with no place to turn to medical or otherwise, had to turn to her only option. In the event that abortion was to become criminalized or become a felony once more, the possibility of a situation such as Santoro’s resurfacing is not only a strong possibility, but a likelihood due to trends in self-inflicted abortions.

Between ages 18 – 24 most women have about an 86% chance of becoming pregnant. This is usually the time when women are in or graduating from college and trying to find a career. Having a child during this time period could prove to be disastrous for the woman’s life and plans. Not to mention she may not have the financial resources required to care for a child. Pregnant college students have a difficult time finding off-campus housing that suits their needs. Studies have shown that college students who become pregnant find it very difficult to graduate. They often find it easier to drop out of school and try to focus on raising their child, however this option can greatly affect their future work and income. The majority of women within the aforementioned age range rarely have enough money to take care of themselves and raise a child simultaneously. Raising a child is a very difficult duty. Children crave emotional commitment and financial resources are necessary to care for them. If a woman feels she is not ready for a child the pregnancy ends up being unwanted. Forcing a woman to carry out her full pregnancy in spite of her desires not to will the child will grow in an environment that does not provide the love and stability that it will need. The woman would have to find health insurance for the child and be able to pay for it. She would also need to be able to pay for clothes, baby formula, diapers, wipes, medications, and all necessities she would need to survive as well. It is reasonable for the opposite side of this debate to conclude that a woman should use better protection methods for herself if she does not want or cannot take care of a child. While this assumption can be agreeable to a certain degree, one would have to consider that not all women have health insurance that would cover birth control. Birth control pills can cost up to $50 for a one-month supply and doctors’ visits to obtain birth control can cost anywhere from $35 to $250. One also must consider that not all pregnancies are a result of consensual intercourse.

In 2008 a 54-year-old English businessman was convicted for repeatedly raped is two daughters over a period of 25 years and fathered seven children with them. This man continued the abuse by frequently moving his family to keep them isolated, threatening them, and keeping them out of school t hide any visible injuries they may have had. His two daughters had 19 pregnancies between them. Studies have been conducted that conclude approximately 32,101 pregnancies result from rape every year. Children conceived of this transgression are not planned since the intercourse was forced. “Any act of sexual violence can be a traumatic experience that may interrupt [ a woman’s] life at home, work, or school, which can also affect [her] relationship with family, friends, co-workers, or significant others. (“The Survivor’s Handbook” 2)” A woman who becomes pregnant as a result of sexual assault will sometimes view the child as a constant reminder of her trauma. Since “perinatal mood disorders affect one in seven pregnant people (Smith)” this could add an unreasonable amount of stress to a woman who is already struggling with her mental health. If a woman has been sexually assaulted, she may be left with painful psychological wounds that could develop into mental illnesses. If this happens, the child could serve as a trigger that would prevent the mother from nurturing and loving her child. The opposing side of the abortion controversy would suggest giving the child up for adoption. This option would offer the child a loving home where it is wanted. Abortions reduce the number of adoptable children. Adoption opens doors for families who aren’t able to have their own biological children. However, it is not guaranteed that these children will find a forever home. A large number of orphans end up in foster care being bounced around from home to home until they turn 18. Once these children reach 18 they’re usually expected to figure things out for themselves. These children often have a difficult time developing relationships because they haven’t had any stability in their lives or anyone to teach them basic social skills.

Abortion will continue to be controversial because there will always be women who can’t or won’t raise their children or give birth. There will always be cases of physical health issues that will prevent a woman from giving her child a healthy life or living a healthy life herself. There will never be enough money in the world to support our growing population and the government has no right to force a child on a woman who is not ready for one. In addition to these issues, as rape exists, there is no way to completely prevent unwanted pregnancies. Both sides of this debate present excellent points. Prayerfully this society will eventually make strides towards the need for abortion all together.

Julius Caesar: a Comparison of Brutus and Mark Antony

Throughout the course of history, there have been many powerful beings who influenced the people around them. The common crowd followed these beings of high authority, without even a simple question. The former civilizations of Germany, Russia, and Iraq are all stellar examples of an ignorant population clinging to others of gigantic power. Another society that might have fallen into this trap was Rome under the rule of Julius Caesar. In William Shakespeare’s tragedy, “Julius Caesar”, a group of men (most notably Brutus and Cassius), feared that the esteemed Caesar was getting too powerful. They decided to take action and assassinate the military general without considering how the people would react. After the death of Caesar, Brutus and Mark Antony tended to their own discourse out to the plebeians and each uniquely affected the Roman commonfolk. Though Brutus’s speech had a considerable effect on the people, Antony’s clever use of rhetoric outshined Brutus’s speech in almost every way possible. Mark Antony swayed the plebeians to rise to mutiny through his skillful utilization of persuasive devices such as logos, pathos, and verbal irony.

One of the most glaring examples of persuasion in Antony’s speech was his use of logic, otherwise known as logos. In Antony’s words, “You all did see that on the Lupercal / I thrice presented him a kingly crown, / Which he did thrice refuse” (3.2.105-106). Antony tries to ask the audience how Caesar was ambitious when he refused the crown three times, which is factual, concrete information. By referencing a recent event that they all witnessed, he effectively questions the audience. He attempts to innocently contradict Brutus’ main reason for killing Caesar: Caesar's increasing ambition. Furthermore, he also talks about how Caesar greatly improved the city: Shakespeare writes, “He hath brought many captives home to Rome, / Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill” (3.2. 97-98). In this example, Antony tells the audience that Caesar brought home many war captives, and as a result, the city gained many riches. In addition to showing Caesar’s strength, this quote makes the plebeians ponder how Caesar was a threat when he vastly improved the citizens’ quality of life. Also, Antony uses the universal language of money here, which makes it so that everyone understands his point.

Of equal importance was Antony’s employment of pathos, which is appeal to emotion. Mark Antony remarks, “And they would go and kiss dead Caesar’s wounds / And dip their napkins in his sacred blood-- / Yea, beg a hair of him for memory / And, dying, mention it within their wills” (3.2.144-147). When Antony says this, he uses creative diction to evoke certain emotions in the crowd. Firstly, he shows hows much blood was shed from Caesar’s multiple wounds: this creates empathy in the plebeians’ minds. He also calls the blood sacred, hinting that Caesar was a saintlike figure. He tries to create sympathy for Caesar (as opposed to Brutus making him look like the villain) by saying that Caesar left the Plebeians everything, and once they hear his will, they would immediately go and kiss Caesar's dead body. In addition, Shakespeare writes, “It will inflame you; it will make you mad” (3.2.156). Antony’s use of the word “inflame” dramatically gets his point across about how much Caesar loved the plebeians. It creates a sense of bitterness among the plebeians and stimulates boorish feelings towards the conspirators. Ultimately, Antony creates love for Caesar in the hearts of the plebeians and makes them blame Brutus for taking away their noble leader.

Importantly, Antony also ties in verbal irony when he addresses the onlookers. Antony maintains, “Come I to speak in Caesar’s funeral. / He was my friend, faithful and just to me, / But Brutus says he was ambitious, / and Brutus is an honorable man” (3.2.93-96). In Brutus’ discourse, Brutus says that he is a very honorable man, which adds credibility to his speech. In any case, Antony takes this very reasoning and skewers it, creating a large amount of doubt in the brains of the listeners. With Antony's expressing, it is anything but difficult to tell that Antony does not trust that Brutus is decent, and rather he is taunting the possibility of Brutus having honor. Moreover, Antony notes, “I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, / But here I am to speak what I do know” (3.2.109-110). Although Antony says he doesn’t want to disprove Brutus, he is actually aiming for the opposite. Antony’s language subtly lets the people know what he is doing. His usage of sarcasm inside the address passes on a feeling of trickiness that gave rise to the rebellion of the Romans against the schemers.

In conclusion, Brutus’s fatal mistake of not harming Antony shows itself when Antony persuades the common people to rise to mutiny. Antony achieved his staggering impact on the plebeians through his usage of logos, pathos, and verbal irony. As Lao Tzu said, “There is no greater danger than underestimating your opponent”. The Role of Fear in Lord of the Flies

Have you ever feared being stranded on an island while your constantly worrying about being rescued and even being killed? Probably not, but this group of young boys experience this in the book Lord of the Flies written by William Golding. Golding tells a story about a group of young boys whose plane crashes on a deserted island with no grown ups and no idea what they’re doing. On the island, the boys attempt to make a functioning society with leaders and rules, but inevitably fail. This results in the boys turning on each other while savagery and evil consumes them. Along with the fear of never being rescued and believing that there is a beast who is accompanying them on the island and hungry for blood. Fear is a definite ongoing theme within the book Lord of the Flies and the boys would have never thought that their fear and what will become of it will be the most dangerous beast on the island.

The disturbing idea of being stuck on the island is a lingering thought in the boys minds. This is an obvious fear factor and they handle it in very different ways. In the beginning the boys claim their main focus is to be rescued. They try to accomplish this by building and upkeeping a fire on the top of the mountain for a smoke signal. But not all the boys follow through with the idea throughout their time on the island. Jack and his hunters left the fire to go kill a pig and it goes out. While their gone Ralph spots a ship on the horizon and he finds out that their smoke signal wasn’t present. “'There was a ship--' One of the smaller hunters began to wail. The dismal truth was filtering through to everybody.” (Golding 54). Everyone is already worrying about not being rescued but once this happens they all are hit with the horrifying reality. Jack is worried about hunting and being a strong leader more than keeping the fire going. On the other hand Ralph's main concern is having a fire and leaving the island. The power of fear is now influencing their actions but in very different ways. For example, Ralph is trying to be efficient with his fire and the idea of a ship seeing their smoke. He is trying to get rid of his fear and at the same time trying to be optimistic about being rescued. While Jack is afraid of the thought of being perceived as weak. So he wants to prove himself, of course, by hunting and killing a pig. Soon these concerns will be diminished by a much greater fear that will eventually be too powerful to handle.

A mysterious creature is brought to light when a littlun claims he saw a “beastie” in the forest. “'Well. They're frightened.'. . .'I mean the way things are. They dream. You can hear 'em. Have you been awake at night?' Jack shook his head. 'They talk and scream. The littluns. Even some of the others. As if—''As if it wasn't a good island.'. . .'As if,' said Simon, 'the beastie, the beastie or the snake-thing, was real. Remember?'” (Golding 40). The beast is an mysterious creature posing a unknown threat to everyone even if they don’t admit it. Fear of the beast is the main source of chaos on the island. And it begins with the rejection and denial of its existence. The boys try their best to say that there is no beast but they all know there is something posing a threat, either real or imaginary. They have an assembly about the beast and the boys are obviously still afraid of it. Ralph is still trying to convince everyone that there isn’t a beast. Jack eventually lashes out at Ralph after constant argument and claims that if there is a beast and that he’ll hunt it and kill it. This convinces a majority of the boys to tag along with Jack as he strates away from the others. This is an important scene becuse Jack has now implanted more fear into the boys by implying that there is a beast. He says, “We're strong--we hunt! If there's a beast, we'll hunt it down! We'll close in and beat and beat and beat--!'”(Golding 70). Jack accomplishes his desire for power into using the fear of the beast as bait for the boys into following him. He himself is still afraid but he dekises it by making himself look strong and that he will provide the boys who join him with safety. Jack's obsession with power and hunting is mostly caused by the fear of being weak, vulnerable and of course the threat of the beast. During the meeting Simon says something really important but it is unfortunately ignored, 'Maybe,' he said hesitantly, “'maybe there is a beast.'. . .'What I mean is . . . maybe it's only us.'” (Golding 68). However this concept is definitely not forgotten.

Now the boys are separated into two groups. The savages, whose leader is Jack. And Ralph’s no mane group which contains Piggy, Simon, Samneric and a few littluns. The savages hunt a pig and leave its head on a stick in the middle of the forest. Simon often wonders around the forest and soon encounters this horrifying image. At this moment everything Simon believed came true. “'Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!' said the head. . . 'You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you? Close, close, close! I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are what they are?'”(Golding 111). The truth was out, only Simon knows now, but he knew all along. The beasts words are speaking the dark reality and that reality is that the only thing the boys should be scared of is what’s become of them. This idea of a beast in the forest has only consumed them and now is truly a part of every boy on the island. And this fear that is controlling them has taken over their thoughts to make them do what they do. Even the beast says it himself, “'--Or else,' said the Lord of the Flies, 'we shall do you? See? Jack and Roger and Maurice and Robert and Bill and Piggy and Ralph. Do you. See?'”(Golding 112). Again the beast is saying that the boys have been taken over by their fear and now who knows what they’ll do with it. Simon decides to climb the mountain to only find a dead rotting pilot tangled in his parachute which has been perceived as the beast described by Samneric earlier in the story. Simon decides to find the others and tell them his new discovery. Down at the beach all the boys are gathered by the fire and are enjoying their pork. They soon break out into a chant “...Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!...”. This ritual is happening when Simon finally reaches the beach. The boys are so caught up in their idea of killing the beast that when they see this figure run out of the woods they unconsciously decide Simon is the beast and end up murdering him. This is a prime example of the boys being blinded by fear. They’re actions are going through without any thought or consideration, it just happens just like that without them having to think twice. The boys have now become the beast and now the only thing to be afraid of is each other. This becomes even more true when Roger ends up killing Piggy also when Ralph is being hunted by Jack and his hunters.

Fear can cause so many things to happen even if we don’t realise it. This shows greatly in Lord of the Flies by William Golding. It is clear that fear is the source of all evil doing on the island. It drastically alters these poor boys minds and their actions in every way possible. Fear had lead the boys into leaving their organized ways and into savagery and destruction. The boys fear grows from worrying about being rescued then the beast and eventually the realization that the terrifying evil that they think the beast is only themselves. Fear can be the most effective influencer when it comes to people's thoughts and actions.

Post World War Two was a time where all citizens wanted a better quality of life. This quality of life also meant to protect the environment and the Earth they live on. Starting in the 1970s there became a huge depletion of natural resources and pollution became a huge problem. Specifically, in America, it only truly became evident in the 1970s but the interest of aiding the environment had been in the agenda since the 1960s. Even before the 1970s, acts were passed such as the Clean Water Act of 1960, Clean Air Acts of 1963, and the Water Quality Act of 1965. Several acts were put into place to initiate the betterment of the environment but it was not until 1970s when society began to notice. Not only did America notice a need for change but problems around the world such as Europe, Jakarta and several other areas had their own issues. However, in efforts of attempting to fix the environmental problems, several acts and solutions were determined and thus it is important to examine whether or not these solutions worked or not.

Non-stop pollution was plaguing North America and with the rise of industrialization, fossil fuel and car pollution covered the blue skies. Not only was pollution a problem but so was oil landing in the ocean polluting the water with harmful toxins that killed several mammals. One example includes the 1969 oil rig failure that fell off the Coast of Santa Barbara and 100,000 barrels of oil covered the ocean shores. Another example was the oil spill in 1971 by the S.S Wafra, again this polluting of water was harming all life. There are many examples of environmental damages that were occuring in the United States and all over. Additionally, waste sites were all over. The Love Canal in Niagara Falls, New York had over tons of hazardous waste. Due to this waste, several residents close by became ill and it caused many problems for families and the elderly. It was so bad that it caused an evacuation and people could not live in their homes. Acid deposition in the Northeast United States from the burning of coal and in the West United States from utilities and motor vehicles caused a number of problems as well. These are just a few examples of environmental issues that were happening in North America, not even on a global platform. When examining it on a global perspective, places like Jakarta were having serious air pollution due to cars and fossil fuels. Fossil fuels grew by a huge percent and air quality all around the world was dangerous.

In a bigger sense, global warming was also a rising issue. The greenhouse effect, which is caused by human fuels such as cars and fossil fuels were contributing the huge problem of global warming. The greenhouse effect consists of many gases such as carbon dioxide, ozone, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorine gas. These gases are trapped in the atmosphere due to allowing sun to hit the Earth surface but they trap the heat in exactly like a plant greenhouse would. It reflects back on Earth. Many of the greenhouse emissions grew because of the 1970s thus as these gases continued to rise so did the temperature of the Earth. However, the greenhouse effect does not only affect just the rise in temperature but it also alters the amount of precipitation and where the rain lands and does not land. Thus areas that are already hot like Africa were not receiving rainfall which made it more hot or humid. The continuation of the greenhouse effects causes problems not only for Earth externally but for the animals and humans on Earth. Many have to suffer hotter temperatures and sometimes mammals will have to leave their homes or find new food sources because food would be scarce. Temperature rise also effects farming and that effects production for families to eat. Overall, problems like global warming, the greenhouse effect, oil spills and car and fossil fuel pollution became out of control and there needed to be something done.

The depletion of natural resources and pollution led to the growing awareness of global environmental problems and several new solutions were offered and some put into place. Firstly, the idea of Earth Day, which was first celebrated in 1970 was now celebrated every year on April 22nd. This day was created to allow people to acknowledge the fact that they need to protect the land they live on and this day showed appreciation to why. Earth Day mainly started because of the huge increase in oil spills and rise of pollution does the idea was to have more public consciousness and advocacy. Earth day today has become a huge phenomenon and many people around the world celebrate it.

In addition to Earth Day, the Environmental Protection Agency was established in 1970 by President Nixon. The Environmental Protection Agency established many acts to help the environment, some included the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, the Clean Air Act of 1970, the Ocean Dumping Act of 1972. The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 was an act that had three intentions in which mainly all revolved around creating a harmonious relationship between man and Earth and for federal agencies to make more environmental assessments as well as pay more attention to what is happening. The Clean Air Act of 1970 was a very influential and effective act that established rules of fossil fuel emissions as well as car gases, additionally, on ways to protect ozone, and limitations on several vehicles such as cars, planes, and other modes of transportation. The Ocean Dumping Act of 1972 which made it illegal and would be fined for any dumpage into the ocean. Other acts included the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 and Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976. Several more acts were passed but these were just a few that encouraged and helped in numerous ways.

In conclusion, since the acts have passed great progress has been made for the world and people living within. The level of pollution has dropped and even today in big cities there are not that many fossil fuel buildings around. After the 1970s the world moved from industrialization to modernization with technology. In today’s world cars are not working on electricity, fines are put into place for littering or dumping of waste etc. The Clean Air Act of 1970 most importantly continued to evolve over the years and is still very prevalent today. The environmental problems that occurred in the 1970s was a wake up call of the possibility of Earth becoming tarnished and there needed to be something done about it. The world needs to be taken care of and in order to do so the human population needs to be more aware and advocate for safer resources and cleaner ways.

The Landlady Poem Eassay

As the title of the poem clearly suggests that the poem is about a landlady, and it illustrates the life and actions of a landlady. There are many more similar compositions shows the formulaic way of thinking rather than using long sentences and less use of punctuation.

The author's use of language is catching, and her physical appetite to take something from her inhabitants into herself is underscored by the usage of alliteration. The alliteration of sound 'p' in line 13 reinforces the examination of her cushioning in a relentless, repetitive form, as well as creating the rhythm. The use of hyperbole has helped the speaker to create some level of humor in the poem where some statements have been used not to be taken literally. The landlord "peers/stippled with inquisitive substance", is a portrayal alluding to a spotting procedure in work of art, was used here modestly to emphasize the landlady's status as a result of the artist's imaginative creation, reflecting on the poems symbolism. The modifier likewise inspires her loads of expectations, making her "bounce", "dream", and '"tremble" to realize what her visitors are doing (Swann, 1).

The poem has been described in an unoriginal and objective voice through which the speaker avoids conceding a similar disappointment in human association by keeping herself certain from the landlady's voracious dejection. This is clear from the way she would like to fill her vast void with her inhabitants' insider facts, wanting a glimmer of something legitimate or even compellingly terrible to break the redundant monotony of her day by day presence and to escape her inner self (Swann, 1). This, as well, presents the conflict in the poem that the speaker is facing, being in a struggle between her real self and her inner self besides trying to show the real-life challenges that people go through on their daily living domains.

Superman and I: the Personal Experience of Sherman Alexie

Some people were born with silver spoons and some were born with no spoon at all. Growing up comes with different types of experiences for many kids. “Superman and me” by Sherman Alexie is a story about the author’s personal life experience and struggles. The author describes the importance of literacy. A lot of children all around the world are confronted with many challenges at a tender age. Life is not a bed of roses, but ambition is the key to success.

Alexie describes his family standard of living, “we were poor by standards, but one of my parents usually managed to find some minimum-wage job or another, which made us middle- class by reservation standards” (Alexie 1).

The author described his experience on how to read and write, apparently, he was surrounded with books, he had a choice not to like books but his love for his father who was an amazing reader influenced him positively and he developed strong passion for reading and eventually created his own dialogue. Alexie’s father laid the foundation for him unconsciously because of his love for reading books. Despite being poor, he found a way of making extra money to buy books. Breaking out of his community stereotype was his breakthrough to success.

Alexie described the size of his family by saying, “I had a brother and three sisters. We lived on a combination of irregular paychecks, hope, fear and government surplus food” (Alexie 1). Despite his family standard, he was lucky to have parents that would do whatever it takes to bring food to the table.

Alexie taught himself how to read from the Superman comic book. The author’s main objective was to educate his fellow Indians Alexie once said, “A smart Indian is a dangerous person, widely feared and ridiculed by Indians and non-Indians alike” (Alexie 2). He understood how well to manage his time. Alexie prioritized reading and read anywhere. He saw beyond the financial limitation of his family, he came from a poor family. His father devoted himself to the habit of buying and reading books. He taught himself the concept of paragraphing using his own examples for clearer understanding.

Alexie used his life experience to describe what literacy meant to him and this defined how he walked his way to success. Alexie talked about his expectations from other Indian children. However, that he put much hope in his other Indian students, expressing how smart they were outside the classroom but struggle in the classroom makes it look like he overpraised the Indian children, Alexie said, “They struggle with basic reading in school but could remember how to sing a few dozen powpow songs” (Alexie 2).

My personal experience learning how to play the piano as a kid gave me more understanding on how stereotype brings about limitation. I grew up in a setting where kids were never given opportunities or a sense of belonging. I loved the piano so much, but I couldn't afford to buy one or pay for a formal training at a music school. and not formal training. My passion was so high that I would draw the keyboard on a large drawing book and make out the sound with my mouth while pressing the “keys” on my drawing book, but as long as I wasn't aware that I was making the wrong sounds, I enjoyed myself. I was focused and determined then I became unstoppable. I won the battle in my heart first then I began to walk my journey through success in teaching myself how to play the piano. I leveraged on every little material available at my disposal. I remember on many occasions I would save my lunch money for weeks to buy books. My biggest miracle came when my uncle bought me a Yamaha Keyboard on my thirteenth birthday, I can’t describe the joy that flooded my soul. I cared so much for my keyboard that I would guard it with my life. My uncle saw my passion and struggle with a clear understanding, he decided to encourage me with the Yamaha keyboard. As the years went by, I have achieved so much, I played in concerts and I have trained a lot of people. I achieved all these because I decided to win and I defeated my limitations.

Alexie used everything around him to his own advantage, he wants the Indian kids to strive for more because they can become something more than Spokane reservation kids. Sherman built himself to become a huge influence on his people and the society at large. Sherman Alexie was successful because he decided to prove everyone wrong Alexie once said, “we were Indian children who were expected to be stupid” (Alexie 2). Anything is possible, once there is will, there is way, sometimes we just need to strive by pressing onward to the mark.

Why Adnan is Innocent Essay

 Imagine you’re 18, about to graduate, when suddenly everything comes crashing down. You are suddenly arrested for the murder of your ex girlfriend, a crime you swear you didn’t commit. The only evidence they have on you is a testimony from someone you know named a Jay, though that couldn’t possibly be enough to convict you right? Wrong, before you know it you are sentenced to life in prison for a murder you’re certain you didn’t commit before you even got a high school diploma. This is exactly what happened to Adnan Syed, and 8 year old senior who was wrongfully arrested for the murder of Hae Min Lee in 199. that In my opinion, I believe that Adnan Syed is innocent because Jay is unreliable, he had an alibi, and he acted normal after the break up.

Some might argue that Jay’s testimony proves Adnan killed Hae. Of course we can all agree that Jay’s testimony makes Adnan look suspicious. However, Jay's testimony is not reliable due to the fact that he is a drug dealer and the amount of trouble he’s had with the law before that deal with drugs. Jay had changed his story many times as he told it to law enforcement, he even lied to the police the first time that he spoke to them. He also lied to others around him, like Jen, who he told he had no part in the murder at all, and the phone booth he said Adnan called him at has no record of ever existing in the first place. He had suspicious behavior as well, making sure to wipe the shovels they allegedly used to burry Hae’s body and disposing of the clothes he wore the night of the murder, he took more precautions that he should have if he was really as innocent as he claims. With all of this, how could Jay be trusted to be such a big part of Adnan’s conviction when Jay himself has a history of lies and breaking the law? When observing how many holes there are in Jay’s story, and how suspicious Jenn described his behavior, it almost seems that Jay was the one who did it. It can be seen that Adnan was really close to Jay’s girlfriend Stephanie, whose parents like Adnan way more than Jay, this might have created just enough built up jealousy for Jay to do something so horrifying, then blame his actions on Adnan.

Another argument the opposing side would make is that Adnan’s cell placed him near Leakin’ Park on the day of Hae’s murder. Of course we can all agree that Adnan’s cell phone was in that central area. However, Cell tower evidence, exactly like was used in Adnan’s case is very often inadmissible as evidence in cases that happen today because of how unreliable it can be and how many mistakes and inconsistencies that can happen with it. Therefore, it’s not fair that this was used as major part in the case against him. Cell towers also overlap which can cause an inaccurate location to be shown and the cell tower can’t show your exact location in the first place, only the area you might be around. As well as all of this we can’t even be sure that Adnan had his phone on him. Adnan could of easily left in Jay’s car after they went shopping earlier that day for Stephanie’s present, instead of Adnan being near Leakin’ Park, it really could have been Jay. No one can be for certain who had Adnan's phone at the time and even if he did have his phone at the time, he could have been simply driving by when the tower was activated. The idea that Adnan was not in Leakin’ Park is also supported by a letter sent from Asia McClean. In the letter she wrote to Adnan, she said that she had seen Adnan in the library right next to the school, within the seven time period that Hae was killed in. Asia had no strong relation to Adnan as far as friend groups or a anything, so she had no reason to lie. With this, no one had ever even seen a Hae with Adnan after school so it comes down to the story told by Asia, or the story told by Jay, the drug dealing felon.

A third argument those who think Adnan is guilty might argue is that he did it because of his suspected motive. Both sides can agree that Adnan and Hae’s fresh break up makes Adnan look like an obvious suspect. However, it was seen many times that Adnan acted totally normal after the break up. His friends said he was just sad, feeling as any other teen would feel after a break up. In fact, Adnan would almost seem more suspicious if he had no feels of sadness after the break up. Saad even said that very soon after the break up Adnan had already moved on to other girls, saying he was a player and hooking up with at least three girls less than a month after the break up, which shows that the break up didn’t even affect him that much. Even when Hae and Adnan were together it was described as a happy and average teen relationship, and they barely had any arguments at all. Hae’s diary also showed this. Adnan also showed having no hard feelings toward Hae when he would talk to her normally quite frequently. In early January, Hae had gotten into a car crash and helped her along with her new boyfriend Don, who later said that Adnan was really calm and cool. It was clear that they stayed friends and no one Adnan knew saw any strong tension after their relationship.

In conclusion, because of how unreliable Jay is, how Adnan had an alibi, and how normally he acted after the break up, it is clear that Adnan is innocent. In my opinion I think that the following steps need to be taken: First Adnan should be given a retrial. Due to the amount of evidence supporting that he is innocent and the fact that his original trial was unfair, he should he granted this retrial. Second, once he is proven innocent I think that a Adnan should be offered a substantial amount of financial compensation for the loss of over 18 years of his life for a crime he didn’t commit by suing the state for as much as he can. Though this can’t make up for the years of his life he lost, it will help support him while he looks for work and help him continue life. Lastly, I think that Hae’s murder case should be reopened, and they should continue to look for Hae’s killer. Was well as this, I think that Jay should be thoroughly investigated because since Adnan would be free, it would be clear he was lying in his story, so he obviously has a part in her death.

The Importance of Color in the “Great Gatsby”

In many works of literature, you can find countless numbers of symbols. In “The Great Gatsby,” written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, you can find symbolism in the different colors that are portrayed throughout the novel. These colors are blue, grey, yellow, white, and green. The story follows and is told by, Nick Carraway. He was once the neighbor of the lavish James Gatz, more notoriously know as Gatsby after he changed his name to Jay Gatsby. We are constantly seeing Jay Gatsby’s attempt to win back Daisy Buchanan. These attempts are all told from the perspective of Nick Carraway. We can put together many underlying themes within the colors of the story. With these colors you are able to gain insight into someone’s intentions and or feelings. The depiction of these colors is what really puts the pieces of the puzzle together.

Yellow

The color yellow is portrayed in many ways throughout the entirety of the novel. Yellow in the novel is also seen as the color gold. The color can be referred to as wealth, being in the upper class, and a majority of Gatsby’s possessions. Yellow is the color of Gatsby’s car, his prized Rolls-Royce. The color of his tie is gold, his toiletries, and even his food is sometimes gold. The era this novel is based off of was during the “Roaring 20’s.” During that time, there was an economic boom, which led to material possessions, extravagant parties, and other upper class activities, being a must have. These things were a “must have,” because during that period in time, you were considered high class and successful if you looked the part. This was a desire that many strived for, idolized, and worshipped. Since these selfish tendencies are associated with the color yellow, it can also be symbolized as greed. The color yellow is not just wealth and rays of sunshine; it is also viewed as one of the most destructive of colors. “The yellow color is the color of autumn leaves, which symbolizes decay, death and destructive power,” (Haibing). Before Gatsby was murdered by gun shot from Mr. Wilson, he vanished into the yellowing trees instead of asking his chauffer’s for help. Him disappearing into “yellowing trees,” was an indicator of the inevitable death of Jay Gatsby. Jay dies because he is the one who George thinks killed his wife. When in fact, the person who ran over Myrtle was Daisy, Gatsby’s one true love, who was driving Gatsby’s car.

In the novel, Daisy was more than just a character. She actually can be portrayed as two different colors as well as Gatsby’s kryptonite. Yellow and white are both colors that Daisy was associated with. To Gatsby, Daisy was “the Golden Girl,” most of what Gatsby does and buys is to impress Daisy. “High in a white palace the king’s daughter, the golden girl,” (Fitzgerald, 120). The reason Gatsby tries to “keep up with the Joneses,” is to impress Daisy and eventually win her back. “In Western culture, the yellow color is the color that the aristocratic class uses to decorate themselves, so it represents wealth and noble identity, (Haibing).” Daisy can be associated with the term greed, an instance of this is when she was confronted with a pile of Gatsby’s clothing. Upon seeing his clothing, she almost instantly starts to cry and put her face into them as if she was filed with shallow remorse. It was at this moment, that she realized she made a mistake by leaving Jay and should have never married Tom for his money. She would have been far better off marrying Gatsby, the man who truly loved her, but also acquired a substantial amount of money.

White

The color white is also known as “the color of Daisy.” Daisy almost embodies what he color is and it seems to almost revolve around her. Even though Daisy was selfish and greedy, she also had a purity and innocence about her. The daisy flower is also white, pure, and beautiful. Which is what the color white represents; purity, innocence, peace, and beauty. Early on in the novel, when Daisy and Jay first meet each other, she wore a pure white dress. “She was dressed in white and had a little white roadster,” (Fitzgerald, 74). When she was a teenager, she would capture the eyes of many young officers in her all white apparel. She had a house, which was all white and had white decorations on the inside. She wore only white when she was out, and she even drove an all-white car. There are two examples shown of how white Daisy’s house really is. The first time we are told about this is on page 8, “the windows were ajar and gleaming white against the fresh grass outside,” (Fitzgerald). The second instance is also found on page 8, “A breeze blew through the room, blew curtains in at one end and out the other like pale flags,” (Fitzgerald). Even though the color white can be seen as a mark of purity and beauty, it can also be held to a maleficent view in the novel.

As stated before, the color white isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Yes, it means that Daisy is a beautiful pure woman who the story almost revolves around. It shares some of the same traits as the color yellow. These traits are symbolized as “empty, vacuity, superficiality, ruthlessness and selfish to a great extent in the novel,” (Haibing). The color white is a double edged sword, just like our lovely Daisy. She is not only pure and beautiful, but she is also in fact, carrying “a superficial, hollow, cold and selfish heart inside,” (Haibing). Daisy has accomplished everything she needed in her life, everything except for true happiness. She married into a wealthy family, she has to do almost nothing all day, and she has all the possessions she could possibly want in her fictional world. That is, she has everything except for Jay Gatsby, the man in which she truly loves. Daisy is bored almost constantly and while her husband is out and cheating on her, she is lonely. Daisy lives the same life each and every day, she even makes reference to this. “What’ll we do with ourselves this afternoon, and the day after that, and the next thirty years?” (Fitzgerald, 118). To be associated with the color white means that you are indeed wealthy and possess many things, but those possessions are just a compensation for how your personal character is shallow and meaningless.

Grey

There is no color that is more bleak and bland as the color grey. Nothing moves and nothing good comes from anything grey. In the novel, there is a place known as the valley of ashes, which is what Nick Carraway uses to describe Queens. Nothing good ever comes out of the valley of ashes, there is death, spouses cheating on each other, and the lifeless eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg. 'The valley of ashes ?gures most prominently when Fitzgerald uses the setting for the event that inspires the book’s climax: the death of Myrtle Wilson,” (Hauhart). The color grey is connected to death and lifelessness. The man who ended up taking away Gatsby’s life, was also described with grey or ashen accents. On page 26 in the novel, we are shown that George Wilson wears a suit covered in “ashen dust.” Towards the end of the novel we are told about how the ashen figure who killed Gatsby. This is a sad and tragic end to the dream that Gatsby once strived so heavily for.

Blu

When it comes to being lonely, sad, and shallow; there is no better way to put it other than feeling blue. Gatsby is the owner of an eloquent blue garden. This garden consists of blue leaves and his blue yard. “The blue tone of Gatsby’s garden reveals Gatsby’s loneliness and melancholy in his inner heart,” (Haibing). Blue can also be seen as fantasy, which also has a sad longing tone that tags along with it. In Gatsby’s case, that fantasy is to win back and to impress Daisy. The biggest symbol of the color blue is the eyes of T.J. Eckleburg. “The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic - their retinas are one yard high. They look out of no face,” (Fitzgerald, 23). The gigantic eyes with no face symbolize an emotionless god over a shrill and desolate land across from the Eggs of Long island. The eyes of T.J. Eckleburg look down over the valley of ashes. They look over a land of hopelessness and death. Even though the color blue is a sad color. It can also symbolize rebirth. When Jay dies in his pool which is the color blue, it is a sign that he now has a chance to restart and enter a new life. A chance to start over and find his new Daisy if that what his new life entails.

Green

Colors are a gateway to add layers to the story that don’t necessarily have to be described with words. “Colours communicate the moral, social and spiritual dimensions of the work as deeply as any of the other more obvious symbols in the novel,” (Rea). Green has a few meanings, the obvious one being money, while the others are life, dreams, and the color of hope. There is a symbol that shows up three times throughout the novel, this symbol is the green light. The color green, and the green light, can also be closely related to Gatsby. At the end of chapter one, Nick was with Gatsby. When Nick looked over at Gatsby, he was reaching for the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock. “Involuntarily I glanced seaward - and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.” (Fitzgerald, 21). When Gatsby reaches out towards Daisy’s dock, he is reaching for his unobtainable future with Daisy. His one hope and dream was to always be with her, which is why tried so hard to obtain prestige and wealth. He believed that Daisy broke off their engagement because she got married to Tom, who was rich. So in his mind, he had to have been too poor to win over Daisy’s affection. The Third time we hear about the green light was at the end of the novel. We hear about the green light when we hear Nick say, “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter - tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther,” (Fitzgerald, 180). This is a point in time where the color green showed us a chance for a new hope and a chance to strive to achieve our goals and dreams. (Fitzgerald)

In “The Great Gatsby,” color is our gateway to new and interpretive insight into what Fitzgerald might have been thinking. Whether it might have been foreshadowing the main character’s death. Telling us more about a certain character’s personality. Even if it is something as small someone obtaining substantial wealth. We are able to give our own interpretations as to what can be drawn from character interactions and appearances. Why Kindness Matters

What Is Kindness?

In many events, people have taken someone kindness for granted. The expression of being generous, considerate, and friendly defines what kindness is. “Random akts of kidness" are selfless acts performed by a person wishing to either help or positively affect the emotional state (mood) of another person” (Passmore & Oades, 2015). Displaying warmth, affirming someone with words of care, affection, and being concerned for others are other ways of expressing kindness. It takes a strong, selfless individual to be kind, and it also shows strength, and courage. Some may think that a kind person weak, or naïve but, that it far from the truth. Kindness is great social skill that is expressed regardless of gender, race, religion, or age.

Being aware and noticing the times of when someone may be suffering is showing kindness; especially if one should help and reach out to the person in need. A kind gesture, holding the door open for someone, a loving or caring smile, or helping to carry something that may be too heavy for someone to carry is showing the act of kindness. When we celebrate someone that means a lot to us, such as our friends, spouses, parents, and siblings, affirming one another, sharing food, sending donations to charities, not spreading gossip, and helping the elderly is a way to show kindness.

Kindness is also showing accountability. “Whilst kindness is greater than an emotional experience alone, it has been demonstrated to have a clear emotional undercurrent; namely, compassion. The momentary thought-action tendency sparked by kindness is clearly an altruistic motivation or the urge to act pro-socially. Acts of kindness can build trust and acceptance between people, encourage social bonds, provide givers and receivers with the bene?ts of positive social interaction, and enable helpers to use and develop personal skills and thus themselves” (Kerr, et. Al., 2015). Kindness is being truthful and giving someone the truth in a loving way so that the person can be receptive to the truth and that it would be beneficial and helpful to the person. Being able to receive accurate and positive feedback in a caring and loving way is important to express true kindness within all trusted relationships. Kindness requires bravery and the courage to extend and receive the truth is an important tool so that everyone can grow in knowledge and as well in their thinking process. Kindness also means to be kind one’s self. To do a self-examination, one should themselves if they are being kind to themselves. Self-affirmation is one way to be individually kind to one’s self and being a good steward. There are numerous ways to extend kindness and there are several ways and opportunities to practice kindness. Possibly the act of kindness is a true jewel and a value that can enhance and increase happiness, strength, and satisfaction in all forms of relationships.

Why Is Kindness Taken for Weakness?

Kindness is being thoughtful, displaying generosity, and caring but, it also has the reputation of being weak. Some people’s perception of kindness is a person who is emotionally weak and “soft”, while the other individual who is mean and rude, disregards kindness from others, when the kind person is brave, tough, intriguing socially, and is admired by many people. There are many people such as leaders, managers, and many other people who are in leadership who chooses to express kindness even though they are in leadership. There are several circumstances when a boss must fire an employee. Even though the situation is not the best situation to be in, the boss in charge is able to fire the employee using kindness and consideration for the employee. “A business leader has to be tough - but there are ways to combine toughness with caring and compassion” (Leading with Kindness: Case Studies in Compassionate Management, 2009). Some may think that leaders who are kind to others are a sign of weakness or passiveness when in fact, these are the opposite of passiveness. These types of leaders live the life of treating others with the same respect that they expect others to treat them. People who automatically perceive people who are kind are weak are missing out on some great people in their lives. Furthermore, these individuals tend to take people’s kindness for granted. The truth is there are great people in this world who genuinely love and care for others’ well-being. These kind souls make the world a better and peaceful place. Close minded individuals should start opening their minds to more positive ways of living instead of thinking negative and believing that every kind person is weak; they should appreciate the kindness that extended to them.

How Can Kindness Be Enforced?

To enforce kindness, one should make a goal each morning to show compassion towards others daily. The betterment of society rests, in part, on the promotion of kindness and compassion. Compassion not only builds positive relationships it is also vital for mental health and adaptation” (Mongrain, et. Al., 2018). When the individual wakes up in the morning, one should decide to do perform a certain act of kindness that day. As the person this act of kindness and begin to put forth more effort daily, this type of loving behavior will begin to be healthy habit. Setting this goal of kindness will increase happiness, success and favor in one’s life. Eventually the person will realize that he or she has a reason to be kind to others and to themselves. Showing kindness can be a “wake-up call” for others as well. Showing appreciation is something that many forget to do. Everyone should always and deserve to feel and to be appreciated. Telling someone thank you does not take along time to say. Letting someone know that they are appreciated could mean a lot to someone. Some do not realize how much the phrase “thank you” or “I appreciate you” will make someone’s day or life so much better. “At a deepest level, the gift of gratitude is our resounding tribute to the universe for all its anonymous blessings: This is how we show our appreciation to the universe for all its gifts, its bounties, and its blessings. By appreciating these gifts through gratitude, we also open our hearts to receive more that is still to come our way.” (Dhiman, 2010). This kind of kindness can be very impactful on one’s life. It is important to discover things to display kindness. Discovering what we believe can show compassion towards such as a donating to a local charity, assisting a friend with a personal problem or just a simple friendly conversation can make things enjoyable and memorable. Smile! Smiling can also make someone’s day. The smallest act of compassion can make one’s day brighter. Kindness goes a long way, and most of all; kindness matters.

Abortions have been talked about for many years and still are questionable. Some people are pro-choice and others are pro-life but people's view on abortions has changed as time went on. Abortion is the removal of pregnancy tissue, products of conception, or the fetus and placenta afterbirth from the uterus (Harvard Health Publishing). Abortions are used for women to end unplanned pregnancy, or for health purposes or many other reasons. Women should not be shamed and called names for doing something to their own body. Women should be able to go into a healthcare office and feel safe. In this article, I read it states” But we are disappointed women will still have to face a barrage of protestors because removing their place of safety somehow slipped through”(Tiaki 8). We are all able to have our own opinion but yet we all need to respect others opinions as well. The controversy in our society about abortions being legal will be an undergoing debate. Abortions should be legal because A baby should not be birthed into the world unwanted and Legal abortions protect women's health.

Women are constantly told every day how they should deal with their own body and their own life. Women need the right to be able to receive health care without being shamed. A child should never be brought into this world if it's own mother or family doesn't want the baby. Women should be able to make a decision about her own body and not be shamed and yelled at for what she decided to do. Women should be able to walk into a healthcare facility and not be humiliated and bombarded with millions of questions because they don't have the same beliefs. We were given the right to freedom and women shouldn't have to suffer because others have chosen their life for them. The number of children who are suffering in group homes, foster care, and adoption is outrageous. Kids shouldn't be brought into this world if they are going to suffer and not live a good life. This is not fair for the mother nor the child itself this is just wrong. In this video, I watched from CBS news it shows how some kids suffer in foster care and never get a home or a family. The quote that was said was “More than 100,000 American kids are in foster care where the average stay is more than two years.”(Strassmann 00:01:49 - 00:02:00).No kid should feel like they are worthless and unwanted because no one will take them in because of choices that were made. The amount of kids who are being put up for care because the mother or father can't take care of the child financially is through the roof. Making abortion illegal will cause adoption centers to increase extremely. Kids don't deserve to be raised in such a bad environment they need to be in a home where the child is loved. Millions of kids go without a home for years or even their whole life.No kid deserves that type of life no one at all should be put through that type of pain. Women need their rights, they know what's right for their body, not the ones standing outside the buildings protesting against something they have minimal knowledge about. Laws need to be put into place because women are people who deserve the rights to their bodies. It's shocking to think other people can control what women do with their bodies and how they go about their health. We were all granted the freedom to be able to live our lives and yet we're being told what's “right” for our bodies.No man or woman should make a decision that impacted someone's life forever.

Every woman's body is created differently and not all women can carry a baby and keep the baby and herself healthy. Protesters think women get abortions only because they just don't want the baby. Not every abortion is a choice some women's health is on the line and the baby and the mother both are at risk and abortion is the only option available. In the article, I read Erica Goldblatt Hyatt talked about her son and how she had to get an abortion because her son was diagnosed with Congenital High Airway Obstruction Syndrome and they told her he wasn't going to make it (Zdanowicz). The word abortions dosen’t mean the one thing people think just killing the baby because the mother wants to. This was one example of why abortions should be legal because some women just have no other option,their life and the baby's life were at risk.No women should be turned down healthcare service because of what people think. After all, others feel that the care isn't necessary because of their own opinion.

Many say that abortions make the baby suffer and they are in pain the whole time. This is all incorrect and wrong in so many ways. There are different stages of pregnancy that women get an abortion. Mainly over 90% of women get an abortion at six weeks which is the recommended time frame for women to get it at. Babies who are twenty weeks and over tend to feel some pain but hardly any states do abortions that far along. Most women have made up a decision of getting an abortion before week eight. If the baby is not getting hurt the laws should be put into place to keep abortions until the weeks were the babies feel the pain which is twenty weeks and over. Abortions are a part of healthcare service and should not be turned down. In the article I read from Hill she talked about how women should not be turned down for care. She stated, “If abortion is placed in the framework of health care, the right to access abortion may then be considered to be an aspect of the right to health”(Hill 501). The people need to stop and think people never know why women are getting abortions. There are millions of cases everyday but for different reasons. Before judging take the time to understand and not only consider what society thinks as a whole.

In conclusion, Women should have the right to do what they want with there bodies at the appropriate stage of abortions. Women should not be turned down for healthcare because the law says we control how women will live their life. We live in a free country and the fact that people around the world don't have rights to their own body is ridiculous. Slowly states are starting to pass the laws about abortions which should have been done long ago. Women should never have to feel guilty because they had to or wanted to make a decision about their body. These protesters who stand outside these facilities are so uneducated because they only care about themselves. Not every woman is the same and not every woman can carry a baby. These people need to start and respect women and what they decide to do. Some may not feel the decision they made is correct but that's life and we will all live. Let the women have their rights just like we all have.No one but the mother caring for the child should have a say on what she wants to do about the child. If it's not there body they should have no say in what women should and shouldn't do.

  Pollution is a chemical substance that is harmful and poisonous. This affects not only to the environment but us as well. Pollution doesn’t make itself, it is made from factories, trash and human heat(walking and/or talking). The major forms of pollution are air pollution, light pollution, water pollution, plastic pollution, thermal pollution and noise pollution. This is the major cause of global warming, and was also the cause of 9 million deaths in 2015.

Pollution has been on earth since prehistoric times, when man first discovered fire. According to the page History “the industrial revolution of the mid-19th century introduced new sources of water and air pollution. By the middle of the 20th century, the effects of these changes were beginning to be felt in countries around the world”. In other words the Industrial Revolution had a major impact to the Environment in a bad way, and was affecting the air. It is important to know the damage that has been done throughout the years, for us to be conscious of what were the causing factories.

The air pollution is known all over the world but a lot of people don’t really believe it’s harmful to our health. This is also the reason why we can’t enjoy stargazing at night. Air pollution is mostly the smoke that is created from factories, and also the smoke from cars it can irritate the eyes, nose and throat. This can also cause problems with breathing and could also have an effect in the heart if pollution is bad.According to Kim Knowlton an effect of pollution “in the U.S. thanks to the Clean Air Act, climate change will make it harder in the future to meet pollution standards which are designed to protect health” Essentially, arguing that air is what keeps us healthy. Air pollutants have also been found to be harmful to a pregnant women, Columbia center for children’s environmental health states “That pregnancy may predispose children to problem regulating their thoughts, emotion and behaviors later on”. In other words, air pollution not only affects us but also affects the not born the way it affects them is through the umbilical cord which is were they breath through and contains blood vessels.

For people that enjoy stargazing it is easy to notice how pollution is affecting the air because the night sky isn’t clear. As a result we can’t enjoy the view but see the moon and that is only if we are lucky enough to see it. According to physics “The core problem here, by a very wide margin, is light pollution if you live in a large city. This is the one factor, above everything else, that affects your ability to see the stars”. The light that exist in the city is brighter than the sky at night the sky isn’t dark enough for stars to shine.

We all know the immediate impact that pollution has had since Industrial Revolution to the present, but have we ever had the thought of what will happen in the future? According to Future Effects of Pollution “Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, contribute to climate change, which causes sea level to rise, drought, stronger storms, hotter temperatures, and decreased snowpack”. This states that due to pollution the climate changes and it is not stable or at least not how it’s supposed to be during the the 4 different seasons. Due to this the atmosphere is contaminated with smoke which is a way to keep oxygen on earth helping us be alive. Another point that Future Effects of Pollution stated was “human health will be affected on all fronts”. This meaning that pollutants would cause sickness to become a constant and affect human lives. This also means that there won't be a future if there are people that don’t act like humans beings but instead that act like the worst trash living on planet earth.

According to the Department of Environmental Services a great way to help the environment is to “Keep your automobile well tuned and maintained. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on routine maintenance, such as changing the oil and filters, and checking tire pressure and wheel alignment”. This is a way for those who have cars keep the environment clean from air pollution and also a way to keep their cars nice and with good service. Green Clean Guide states to “Adopt the 3Rs of solid waste management: reduce, reuse and recycle”. Using the 3 R's is a good option because this ways we are helping have a clean air and we wouldn’t have to worry about having an ocean full of pollutants and our water would be clean to drink from it without getting sick. We would have cleaner Earth and we would even have our lungs not so impure.

Air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, etc could be minimized if us as humans have consideration towards the environment. We could stop cutting down trees for the oxygen to be clean, turn of the lights that are not needed at home for less air pollution. If we want to have cleaner oceans put the garbage where it’s supposed to go and not in water or the land you stand in. Future impacts of pollution would be a thing that we cause on ourselves it is not something that could be stopped immediately but we could start little by little. When adults say that the younger generation are the future the older people to know that future would probably not be possible if they keep making factory plantations in places were trees are supposed to be. The people that smoke not only they are causing their self damage but the smoke that the cigarette makes is a also a damaged for the younger because their lungs are not strong enough to support so much smoke.

Overall air pollution harms our health because of big factories that are spreading all those chemicals on the air. If we keep on making more factories the next generation will be at risk and will have harmful diseases that won’t probably be a cure for. We as people should have a conscious of the consequences that is going to be happening in the future. A better way for this not happening would be start recycling, close out factories that are the most that create pollutants, stop throwing trash on the ocean, reduce combustion engines use more fuel efficiency, for last plant trees and stop using harmful chemicals towards nature. Ethical Dilemma: Basic Belief and Decision

Every day humans are placed in positions where they have to make choices and are forced to live with the consequences of those choices, some good, and some bad. How they choose to make it through these issues of life deeply shape them as a person and fundamentally affect their worldview. An ethical dilemma of peer pressure to use performance enhancing drugs (PED’s) will be observed from the standpoint of a Christian worldview and compared from an atheist outlook.

Ethical Dilemma

Paul has been working hard to earn a starting spot on the team. Many of his friends have begun using a performance enhancing drug that is untraceable by drug tests, and the coach has turned a blind eye to it. Just recently, the coach came to him saying that changes need to be made to the roster and he might lose his starting position. In the midst of this, Paul’s friend asked him to try this new drug (PED) to gain a leg up on the competition, and to help him grow bigger, faster, and stronger so that he doesn’t fall behind. Paul is now at a crossroads in his life and forced to make an important ethical decision and has no idea which way to go; whether to take the drug and keep his spot on the team, he don’t get picked on, and so he is not the kid falling behind in the gym; or decide not to take the drug and risk losing his starting spot on the team, losing friends, being made fun of, and possibly slip into depression.

Core Beliefs

With the rampant use of performance enhancing drugs in sports today, people are turning to Christians and wondering how they view the topic. While the Bible does not specifically address this, there are verses that can be applied here. To begin, we start by looking within ourselves at the human body. Since the fall, “Adam and Eve plunge not only themselves into sin and death, but also all of humanity (Diffey, 2014).” A core belief of the Christian worldview is that the body is the temple of God. When Christ is accepted into the life of a believer, they begin to look at their earthly bodies differently because Christians believe they no longer belong to themselves, but to God. “Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy; and you are that temple (1 Cor. 3:16-17).”

Furthermore, as men and women of Christ, we should be working hard and striving to please Him in all that we do, while obeying the rules of the land, not just to avoid punishment or to please man. God’s Word reads, “Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men (Col. 3:22-23).”

These are just two core commitments from a Christian worldview that could influence a person’s decision in this scenario easily. First, the young man wouldn’t take the drugs from his friend because he knows that it is wrong and it does not belong in your body. If he is lifting weights, he is probably on a diet and already watching what he puts into his body. Secondly, he should not be concerned if his coach is happy with his performance, as long as he gives one hundred percent, and God is pleased, then he has done all that he can do.

Resolution

The Christian worldview proposes a simple resolution for this dilemma and that is to not participate in the act of using the banned substance or PED offer to him. In the Bible it states, “It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. (Romans 14:21).” The same could be said for using PED’s. They might help you at first, but there will be side effects. “These drugs are found to have a beneficial role in heart failure and osteoporosis, however due to the serious side-effects associated with these drugs; they were rejected for further pharmaceutical development (Sowjanya & Girish, 2019).”

In acting according to a Christian worldview, Paul should decline the offer of his friend and continue working hard to earn his spot on the team the right way. Eventually, the test for that PED will come and it will be found that these players are abusing drugs. When that happens, they could face suspension or even being kicked off of the team where as Paul would not face those consequences, nor have any guilt weighing on his shoulders. Paul can look to Christ for his strength and comfort. Philippians 4:13 states, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This would be Paul’s best course of action to take in this situation. This might keep him from a starting position for the moment, but it will pay off when everything comes out, and the drug is discovered, tested for, and members of the team fail for the banned substance.

Evaluation

It only makes sense that there must be benefits to PED’s, since world class athletes throw away millions of dollars daily from doping. While the benefits are plenty, there are just as many downfalls to PED’s as well. Still, most athletes excel on their own with the technology and numerous types of equipment given for working out, stamina, and recovery. “The real challenge lies in distinguishing between enhancers and steroids (RAPP, 2009).”

Paul chose to go against the grain of his peers and not use PED. He stayed true to his beliefs in a Christian worldview and listened to morals that God placed in his heart. In doing this, he will probably lose his starting spot on the team, get picked on, and lose friends. Now, when he should be celebrating, he is suffering from his choice. “God will not violate your free will, so when you take the wrong path, you suffer. When you encounter evil or negligent people you may suffer (‘Topic 6 Overview,’ 2017).” Another perceived benefit would be, by keeping God’s standard for his life and following God’s Word, Paul could experience blessings that he cannot imagine, begin to happen in his life. This is not saying that Christians have no financial problems, health problems, family problems, job issues, or conflicts in life, but rather rewards are given to those who look toward God as they confront these challenges, while holding onto God and His Word, refusing to be moved by the issues of life. God will reward those who diligently follow Him and keep His commandments. The Bible states in Deuteronomy 7:9 we are to, “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.” These rewards are brought forth when these challenges are overcome through faith in Christ.

An unintended consequence of this dilemma would be the fact that it only takes one time using these drugs to get hooked. Addiction has no preference, whether your rich or poor, skinny or large, young or old, addiction does not care, it will take you right in and absolutely ruin your life and the ones around you. Other unintended consequences could include a worst case scenario where Paul would feel curious, decide to use PED, and then something goes wrong with the injection. His friends, scared, and not wanting to get into trouble, helped him out of the locker room. Little did they know they overdosed him and Paul ends up dying. Things like this happen daily, all because the “friend” does not want to get in trouble. It is sad that situations like this happen but it is true. This is what the world is becoming. “People's “default mode,” he observed, is to be critical of others while justifying themselves. He explained how this is so easy to do because individuals see the world through selfish eyes in which they are the heroes of their own stories (Merrick, 2014).”

Comparison

Paul faces a huge decision that will not only affect him and his ability to be truthful but also his friends and teammates. In fact, his whole future could hinge on the decision that he is currently faced with. This could impact his life forever and he does not realize it, but he is playing with fire. In the Christian worldview Paul should listen to and follow God’s Word but when this scenario is seen from the eyes of an atheist, you see a picture without a God. “Even when one’s assumptions are not religious in a traditional sense, they function much like the assumptions found in other worldviews (Hiles & Smith, 2014).” Say for a moment that Paul is not a Christian; he could still make decisions based upon learned morals and/or right or wrong choices. The main difference being that his morals would be based on good deeds toward others rather than being centered on morals, lain out by God.

Conclusion

After all is said and done, and the temptation to fit in, use PED’s, and be part of the group was difficult for Paul, but he stays honest to himself and what he believes. This is where we reflect and remember that, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it (1 Cor. 10:13).” He provided a way for Paul to escape this temptation, through His Word, and He will do the same for everyone. “Before losing his wife C.S. Lewis often said that, suffering is God’s gift to Christians, a gift that helps them to grow up and leave a childish existence behind for a more mature one (Sharpe, J. 2014).” Paul might have suffered some by losing friends, being picked on, or losing his starting spot on the team, but he did the right thing.

Ultimately, the way that a person will deal with this ethical issue depends on their worldview and their own set of values on life. This paper shows by way of research and Biblical proof that our bodies are a temple of God and it is our responsibility to take care of what goes into it and what you do with it. In the Christian worldview, we work only to please God, not man. Also, we are careful that we don’t become a stumbling block to others around us and we need to be edifying and lifting others up, in Christ’s name. Apart from the many horrible side effects these medications may cause, the Christian and the atheist worldviews can look at the subject similarly and both have positive sides, moral standards, and definite differences between right and wrong. We saw a few great examples of what perceived benefits may look like from the Christian worldview as well as unintended consequences from both sides of the issue.

Luckily, Paul chose to remain true to his beliefs and abide by God’s will. Essay on being Judged Unfairly

For years, members of the LGBTQ community have been unfairly judged due to the questioning of their sexual orientation. Many of these people have faced some sort of discrimination and/or have been through events that discourage them to embrace who they are. Homosexual individuals feel they are being excluded from society due to countless reasons such as culture, a fear of change in relationships, and constantly being told to stick to the status quo.There has been various instances in which normal people of the LGBTQ community have been frowned upon because of different cultural aspects. In order to prove this claim, a study in Ghana took place in which they performed an experiment where a number of students were tested on their attitudes towards homosexuals. “Findings indicated that participants had prejudicial attitudes toward homosexuals, rating them as very unfavourable” (Angela, Gyamerah, and Akotia 1). Furthermore, a poll was taken by the Pew Forum on Religious and Public life to help us understand the views opposed to gay marriages. According to the source they found, “...that opposition to gay marriage and homosexuality is highest among the most religious” (Waldman 1).

Some religious people say they are against homosexuality because they are not able to create new life, while others believe that it is simply unorthodox therefore, they are against it. A constant fear that always seems to be aflame within a homosexual individual is the fear of coming out to their family and friends. The idea that they will be treated differently once they come out has been known to stop kids from telling the truth about their sexual orientation. According to an article about a family’s impact on dating decisions, they performed multiple experiments to see who’s leaves a stronger impact; family or friends? They found many different results including the idea that, “...the effect for friends was slightly stronger than the effect for family” (Blair and Pukall 258).  I believe this is because, as human beings we have a natural instinct to want to fit in and go along with the rest of the group. However, his thought contradicts the proposal that parents have a bigger impact on their children’s decisions which is also very true.

Most parents are known to push their kids to always be the best. It can be very stressful at times, considering that most of us are always looking for our parents’ approval. Many homosexuals are only striving through society to get the approval of others, in order to feel that sense of inclusion in this world. Many homosexuals are treated differently in public places and are constantly being taught to follow the social norms in society. There has been many instances of discrimination of the LGBT community in public workplaces and/or schools. For example, some sports had been “...mobilized for the construction and maintenance of a representation of masculinity.” (Prado 1). Meaning that those who do not fit this label were pushed to the sidelines. Individuals who have been thought of as “different”, are usually victims of bullying and harassment. Many homosexuals have been taunted and teased because to some they seem “socially abnormal”, which is definitely not the case. This feeling of exclusion impacts the decisions of LGBTQ youths to come out and express their inner most thoughts.All inclusive, there are many reasons as to why the  LGBTQ community feel that they are being rejected in society due to their sexuality.

These social claims cannot go unnoticed. Homosexuals should not have to worry about things like the impact of culture, the fear of losing those closest to you, and the fear of being discriminated by the people around you. There needs to be a change.

A Home is more than Just a House

A Place to Call Home

This piece was a moving one called “The Barrio” that tells of a outcasted neighborhood coming to life. Robert Ramirez tells the story of the place he once called home. He breaks down everything from the layout of the neighborhood to the sounds you could hear if you ever found yourself there. He tells how this place viewed to outsiders can be cold and isolated. However, to him The Barrio is a place of refuge from the harsh sufferings of the outside world. The Barrio brings people together in a place that most would not want to live, but to the locals it is forever home.

“There is no want to escape, for the feeling of the Barrio is known only to its inhabitants” (Ramirez 309). This sentence truly conveys what the Barrio is to the people who live there. Outcast who are angry at the seeds of rejection society has given them find themselves amongst friends here. There is no reason to want to leave the Barrio because all of the necessities for life are found there. He tells of a grocery store that feeds its customers every meal. The owner of this store also provides credit to people who are unable to pay for their meal. Everyone is treated like family. There is also no need to look for fun outside of the Barrio cause it can all be found there. The pool hall is a place where young men get together to shoot pool and rap. The cantina a place where people come to drink, and where the young become men. The Barrio follows you through all the stages of life. It follows you forever because it's family.

The Barrio is much different from the Anglo world. There are no privacy fences, cause there is no need for privacy. Some yards can be found to have metal slung fences or none at all. This means that familial relationships get stretched down to the neighbors to all the way down the block. The houses are not the same as the outside either. “The gardens mutely echo the expressive verses of the colorful houses” (Ramirez 310). They are very colorful with no sense of matching. “The denseness of the multicolored plants and trees give the house the appearance of an oasis or tropical island hideaway” (Ramirez 310). Just vibrant colors that seem to arrest your eyes in awe. It keeps the feeling of the neighborhood alive and not dull. In the evenings you will always find children playing outside or adults socializing on lawns or porches. He moves on from the outside of the home to the inside. He tells of the oldest boys always helping out the family in contributing everything they can. Life isn't always easy in the Barrio as is everywhere else. Ramirez reminisces on the poorer families in the neighborhood. Saying that they are trapped in the 19th century and survive as best they can. Hardships come with any neighborhood, but in the Barrio they are made just a bit easier.

The Barrio is forever a place the locals can call home. It is a place that is sheltered from the Anglo world. A place where many would not want to live, but to the people that live there there is no other place they would rather be. The Barrio is a place of security where people can find themselves comfortable amongst family, friends, and friends who are family.The barrio is a different place where the laws of color are played with and the streets dance with color. A place where each morning its breath comes to life and extends its vibrancy to anyone who finds themselves there.

Global Warming Causes and Effects

The main aim and goal of this study research is to highlight and focus the problem of Global Warming. It is the problem of our modern age; the 21st century. Global Warming has become a serious issue that needs study and research. This current project will have a brief look at the problem and its radical and substantial causes. This eventual issue has aroused a lot of argument among scientists and environmentalists to try to find solutions to reduce the side and negative effects of the problem. With restrictions like minimizing the greenhouse gases and finding alternative sources of energy will be the suitable solution to solve the problem and thus, life will continue on earth. Throughout this report, there will be an attempt to emphasize the problem, its causes, its effects and suggested solutions to abate the catastrophic matter.

Introduction

The Earth has been the home for living creatures for a very long time. It may be the only planet with life. The planet Erath is full of beauty. There are different aspects and features of beauty on Earth such as rivers, lakes, seas, oceans, oceans, jungles, animals and birds and so many forms of life. But the human activities and actions have led to a very serious problem. It is global warming. Throughout the last two centuries, particularly, within the new beginning of industrial revolution, our world has suffered from global warming or what most scientists and researchers call climate change. This dangerous problem has apparently become the current study for those who are interested in the environment and saving the world from vanishing and destroying life. Hence appeared the issue of struggling against global warming. It is a real fact. It is serious. It’s up to all of us to solve it. It’s the battle for life. This study will try to focus on the concept of global warming, definition, background history, causes, a case study, effects, conclusion and suggested solutions to solve to the problem or at least adapt to the new conditions for the longest time.

Concept of Global Warming

There are so many problems which the world is facing at recent times. One of these serious problems is global warming. The problem is aggravating and developing sharply, particularly, with the massive development in industry in most countries especially the developing ones. Here is an attempt to define global warming scientifically.

Definition of Global Warming

According to, global warming is defined as is a long-term rise in the average temperature of the Earth's climate system, an aspect of climate change shown by temperature measurements and by multiple effects of the warming. In other words, it is the high increase in the temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere as a result of exhausts and gases that emit from factories and also the smoke and fumes of air pollutants which lead to climate changes causing some troubles and disturbances in the world. It is figured like what happens in greenhouses. The sun rays enters the greenhouse, but the plastic walls don’t allow these rays to exit again an so rises the temperature of the greenhouse. The same thing occurs. The sun, which is the main source of heat on earth, sends its perpendicular rays to the earth surface. These rays penetrates the atmospheric layers and reach the earth in the image of short -wave visible rays and long- wave invisible rays. These are called infrared and ultraviolet rays. Some of these waves are absorbed by the earth’s atmosphere, while others are absorbed by the earth’s surface causing an increase in the temperature. Then, these long-wave rays are reflected again into the atmosphere, but it doesn’t let it out into space because of the greenhouse, causing increases in the temperature of seas and oceans over the natural level.

Background History to Global Warming

Paul N. Edwards claimed that the climate of the earth hasn’t remarkably changed since the existence of man on the Erath two million years before. But in the 15th century, the climate of the earth has begun to change especially with the new era of inventions and then the industrial revolution in the 17th century. Since then, problem began to accumulate on this planet to the degree of threatening life on earth and the necessary solutions to avoid these troubles haven’t been taken into consideration. These problems associated greatly with the political, industrial and technological development. The earth has no longer endured pollution and global warming. Perhaps, there will be a time when the earth will not be suitable to live and there will not be a chance to survive.

Causes of Global Warming

Greenhouse Gases

The temperature of the earth is rising at approximately twice the rate it was 50 years ago. This fast rate and pattern of warming, scientists have concluded, cannot be explained by natural cycles alone. The only way to explain the pattern is to include the effect of greenhouse gases emitted by humans. To come to a conclusion on climate change, the United Nations formed a group of scientists called the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC. The IPCC meets every few years to review the latest scientific findings and write a report summarizing all that is known about global warming. Each report represents a consensus, or agreement, among hundreds of leading scientists. Different greenhouse gases have very different heat-trapping abilities. Some of them can even trap more heat than CO2. A molecule of methane produces more than 20 times the warming of a molecule of CO2. Nitrous oxide is 300 times more powerful than CO2.

Deforestation

Plants play an important role in regulating the climate because they absorb carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen back into it. Forests and bush land act as carbon sinks and are a valuable means of keeping global warming to 1.5°C. But humans clear vast areas of vegetation around the world for farming, urban and infrastructure development or to sell tree products such as timber and palm oil. When vegetation is removed or burnt, the stored carbon is released back into the atmosphere as CO2, contributing to global warming. Up to one-fifth of global greenhouse gas pollution comes from deforestation and forest degradation.

Effects of Global Warming

Global warming has caused serious changes. These changes may be permanent on our planet’s geological, ecological and biological conditions. IPCC has concluded that all the changes that happened in the earth’s atmosphere is related to the human activities and again affects the humans causing serious consequences. These consequences will need unite the efforts to try to overcome this problem and avoid its negative and dangerous chattels. Here are some of the effects of global warming.

Temperature Extreme

The obvious increase of temperature is a vivid effect of global warming. Most counties nowadays suffer from extreme increase of temperature. The countries of Europe are temporarily suffering from extreme hot summers that weren’t accustomed to. The average global temperature has increased by about 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit over the past 100 years, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Extreme Weather Events

Extreme weather events is another effect of global warming. Some areas in the world are exposed to radical changes in weather. For example, some areas that were used to be rainy, are suffering from extreme droughts. While some other areas had cool and mild summers are having very hard heat waves causing dangerous sunburns and deaths. Global warming may also lead to extreme weather other than cold or heat extremes. For example, hurricane formations will change. Though this is still a subject of active scientific research, current computer models of the atmosphere indicate that hurricanes are more likely to become less frequent on a global basis, though the hurricanes that do form may be more intense. This year for instance experienced more than five hurricanes in the US, Oman, Australia, and the south east of Asia.

Ice Melt

That is the case study of this research. One of the most dramatic effects of global warming is the reduction in Arctic sea ice. Sea ice hit record-low extents in both the fall and winter of 2015 and 2016, meaning that at the time when the ice is supposed to be at its peak, it was lagging. The melt means there is less thick sea ice that persists for multiple years. That means less heat is reflected back into the atmosphere by the shiny surface of the ice and more is absorbed by the comparatively darker ocean, creating a feedback loop that causes even more melt, according to NASA's Operation Ice Bridge.

Droughts and Floods

As a result of ice melt, of course, there will consequently be an increase in sea and ocean levels. n 2014, the World Meteorological Organization, reported that sea-level rise accelerated 0.12 inches per year on average worldwide. This is around double the average annual rise of 0.07 in. 

Case Study

An analytical study has warned against the high increase in the ice melt will lead to an increase in the sea levels more than expected. According to the latest studies and evaluations through simulations, the ice melt in the Antarctica alone will lead to an increase in the sea levels by one meter at least by the end of the 21 century. And by the year 2500, there will be an increase of 13 meters in sea levels causing some areas of the world to vanish and disappear. In addition, the ice melt will affect the balance of salt water on the earth causing serious problem to the weather and the planet.

Suggested Solutions

Through all the causes and effects mentioned in the study research, there become a need to find solutions to stop this catastrophic problem. Scientists and environmentalists have suggested the following solutions.

Reduce Emissions

In order to effectively address global warming, we must significantly reduce the amount of heat-trapping emissions we are producing into the atmosphere. On the behalf of all individuals, organizations, governments and politicians, there must be strict laws and legislations to reduce the carbon emissions into the atmosphere be changing fossil fuels with renewable sources of energy such as solar power and wind energy.

Green Economy

The green economy is defined as an economy that aims at reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities, and that aims for sustainable development without degrading the environment. It is closely related with ecological economics, but has a more politically applied focus.

State Policies

There is a need to set of smart, practical policies to jump-start this transition without delay and maximize the benefits to our environment and economy.

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for the government to disbands both the bleakness and the dishonorable that exists within the corrupt justice's system. the system is broken despite the power we have of DNA to solve and prevent crimes, we still have hundreds of thousands of kits from people that have report they have been sexual assaulted — containing potentially crucial DNA evidence in each state — decades of untested kits in abandoned storage buildings and labs across the country. Each of these rape kits represents a survivor who is still hoping for justice.

the people of the United States of America enforce that everyone has the right to a fair trial, have the rights to be heard by a competent, that they are endowed by their creators with certain unalienable rights. That within these rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that too secure these rights given, our government will ensure that our justice system will be closely scrutinize. We should no longer suffer. The history of wrongfully treated sexual assault survivors that are being unheard. To prove this, these facts portrayed below shall give testimony to all:

  • They forced us to feel accountable for what happen
  • They made us feel unimportant
  • They left our kits in abandoned Warehouse like we were nothing
  • They made everyone feel invalid
  • They only took action depending on our skin color
  • They only took action if we were wealthy.
  • They asked inappropriate question
  • They never followed up in the case, causing many others to suffer in the same way
  • They gave us a lost of hope in the justice system
  • They denied to continue the investigation because of what we were wearing, because of
  • Of the time we were out in the street, because we didn’t fight harder, because we didn’t
  • Say Enough “No” even though one “NO” means no and there is no need to say it more
  • Than once for someone to understand
  • They believe violence against women is a low priority
  • They will find excuses to not go to court
  • They made us live in fear

We need to bringing much needed attention to the disturbing part of how the criminal justice system has treated sexual assault survivors. And alarm people that we have more than 107,035 rape kits untested still around the world.

We seek to send a loud and very clear messaged to survivors that they are important! That their perpetrator will be held accountable for their actions and that they're not just a kit nor a box but a person. This is the historic nature of the way we treat are assault victims and the crime of sexual assault in this country, and the positive effects that occur when perpetrators are held accountable for their actions and survivors are given an opportunity for healing and justice. To also send a message of regardless of what happened can move past it, they can grow and change for the better.
