History of the Slavery in America
Slavery was practiced in the American colonies during the 17th and 18th centuries. The first slaves were brought to American from Africa in the early 1600’s to provide cheaper labor to work on the southern plantations. The experiences and lives led by slaves in colonial America were very different than the lives they had in Africa. When they were forced to leave their African homeland, they brought to American many of their customs and traditions. Because they came from different parts of Africa, they brought a variety of tribal customs and traditions over to the colonies representing the different areas they came from. Religion was one of the many traditions they brought with them from Africa. Because slaves came from various parts of Africa, each region had their own religious practices.
However, what started out as religious practices and customs from the area they came from, merged together on the plantations and united into one religion practiced by the slaves on American soil.
For over four centuries, more than ten million slaves were brought to labor and work on colonial plantations. Whey they initially were brought over from Africa in the early 1600’s, they brought with them their own African styles of worship, forms of ritual, systems of belief and fundamental perspectives on religion. Because religion played a huge role in West African culture, which is where most of them came from, it became a huge component of the slave life in America. Olaudah Equiano describes the early slave religion brought from Africa as being similar to Judaism and Christianity. There were many forms of religion brought over from African including Akan, Eure, Yoruba, and others; however, the Ibo religion was one specific religion brought over from Nigeria. They all had influences on the Afro-American religion established by the slaves in America. Equiano gave a detailed description of early religious practices by the Ibo brought over to America. Those that were part of the Ibo religion believed in one creator of all things that lived in the sun. This creator governed all events, especially life and captivity. Many of the religions, including the Ibo’s, believed the spirits of their dead friends and family members are always with them and would help guard them from evil. Rituals were a big part of the religious customs they brought over with them. These rituals included things like before they would eat, putting meat and drink on the ground for the spirits protecting them, using rattles and dance when worshipping and using music to receive blessings from heaven. Part of their traditional religious customs they brought over also included purifications and washings. They were very superstitious and believed things like if you touched a dead person, you could not enter the dwelling until you had been washed and cleansed. In the early days of arriving to America, they did not always have places for public worship, but they had priests, magicians or wise men that were held in great reverence by the people. Even with different religious practices and beliefs, the majority believed in a high God that was the creator of the world and sky. Early on many of the believed, the high God was the parent of lesser Gods. They looked at the lesser Gods as mediators between God and the people making their prayer requests to them hoping they would present them to highest God.
Because slaves came from different areas and brought different religious practices with them, the new slave societies in America blended much of these practices to form their own on the plantations. After being in America, many of the traditional African religious customs and rituals began to fade into a more centralized religious practice representing all slaves. The African slaves reconstructed key elements of their traditional religious practices and configured Christianity according to their needs. Many of their traditional African religious rituals were destroyed by the havoc created when they were captured and brought over to the new world, so they had to come up religious beliefs and rituals that represented their life in the new world. The slave owners were not interested or worried about the spirituality of their slaves, they were much more concerned with the work and labor they could provide. Because of this, slave owners suppressed public religious practices of their slaves. Many of the slave owners believed that slaves would use religious meetings as a place to plan resistance and rebellion.
Because of this, laws were established on the plantations that kept slaves from being able to meet for religious purposes. Other slave owners felt that slaves converting to Christianity and being baptized would undermine the established concept of enslavement and encourage slaves to regard themselves as equals with their owners. Any church or religious meetings they were allowed to partake in were led by white men. In Excerpts from Slave Narratives, Peter Randolph, who grew up as a slave on a Virginia plantation, described the preaching slaves were exposed to by the white man. He describes the sermons by these slave-holding ministers as sermons on how “servants should obey their masters” and “Do not steal or lie for this is wrong and such conduct is sinning against the Holy Ghost and is showing ingratitude to the masters who clothe, feed, and protect.” Other of these slave-holding preachers would preach to the slaves that they were hard-hearted and ungrateful, but were loved by their masters anyway. They would also tell them if they lived good lives, they may not receive lashes from their masters. Henry Bibb, who was the son of a white man and black woman on a plantation in Kentucky, described this preaching as pro-slavery doctrine. They did not have anyone who could read the Bible or to preach except these slave- holding ministers because slaves were not allowed to learn how to read the Bible or receive any kind of religious instruction. So, any preaching the slaves did receive, came from this pro-slavery doctrine.
Because slaves were not being spiritually fed by the slave-holding ministers and they were not allowed to hold church meetings on plantations, they began to meet in the swamps for religious gatherings. They would figure out a time and place to sneak away at night to the swamps, so they could hold their religious meetings. Many of these places were called Hush-Harbors and were secret meeting places outside the plantation quarters. At night, the slaves would sneak off to the swamps to sing and pray. There was usually some kind of preaching by one of the breathern, and then they would sing and pray until they felt happy. Many times, the one bringing the message would start out speaking slowly and as soon as he would fill with the spirit, he would become louder and faster. The intensity and power of the prayers and preaching filled the slaves with the spirit and gave them meaning to own in the dreadful lives many of them faced on the plantations. For a short time while in the woods and swamps praying and singing, the slaves were able to forget about the suffering on the plantation.
The leader of the worship service either knew the Bible because they had learned to read or because they had memorized and interpreted what they had previously heard. Those religious leaders among the slaves were normally chosen by the community because of their Biblical knowledge. After preaching, the slaves would sing and do rhythmic dances to put themselves in communion with the spiritual world. The preaching, singing and dancing would go on for hours and hours. Many of the songs they sang were written by slaves that described the sufferings and hardships of the new world they had been brought to. When the morning star would start to twinkle, they knew their religious services would need to end so they could get home before their master missed them. If they were caught praying or worshipping, they were whipped as though they had committed a crime. If they called out to God while they were getting their whipping, they would be threatened with having their throats cut or brains blowed out.
After a while, Baptist and Methodist missionaries set out on a mission to bring Christianity, other than the slave-holding misters, to the slaves. These missionaries focused on the conversion to holiness for the slaves instead of preaching to them about obeying their masters. Slaves found hope and comfort in this religion brought to them by these missionaries. The slaves easily identified with the biblical teaching of the Old Testament and heroes whom God stood by through slavery and persecution. They also easily identified with the suffering of Jesus. They understood who Jesus was because of their own oppression. They believed the resurrection of Jesus from the grave became a symbol for their own freedom. The Bible became to the slaves the most sacred book of all. Christianity brought to them by these missionaries gave the slaves hope and salvation, giving them a personal and communal identity, moral values, theological beliefs and outward manifestations of those beliefs. The songs they sang told the religious attitude shared by the slaves, and how they related to the sorrows of the world, as well as, the joys anticipating a new home in heaven. There is nothing that tells more of a slaves life than the religious songs they sang, expressing their deepest religious thoughts and feelings. Slaves in American were enthusiastic about religion and developed sorrow for this world and a joyous longing for heaven.
Even though the slaves came from several different parts of Africa and brought several different religious beliefs and rituals with them to America, they were able to create a religious belief system that gave them hope through their sorrows and harshness of life in America. They were able to take bits and pieces of the religious practices they knew in Africa and put them with the Bible teachings they learned in the new world to create a religious belief system giving them hope and joy in a world full of darkness and sorrow. It was through this religious belief system most were able to endure the pain and sorrow of a slave life because they held on to the hope and joy that heaven would one day bring.

Post Slavery in America Essay
The treatment and portrayal of blacks in America has been a long-term discussion in society. The discussion goes back nearly two centuries, and is still seen as the elephant in the room in which everyone pretends is not there. While it is important to realize that we will never know all of the true accounts of slavery, it is still vital that present day society is able to understand the people and events that took place during this time. Slavery was a very impactful time for blacks and whites, however, things would have an even larger impact after the civil war. It was during this time in America that blacks were transitioning from slavery to freedom. Although they were trying to find their place in society, racism and stereotypes always remained an underlying factor in the friction that made transitioning so difficult. The accounts and history of blacks during the post-Civil war era that is taught in the school systems, along with the photos in museums, and the passed down stories and secrets only show a part of this horrific time in history (Foner, 2010).
One way that society has worked to better understand this troubling time in history is through literature. Many English writers and poets have used several techniques to describe the lives of black Americans during the post-civil war era. Post-bellum American culture often found ways to hide the terrible past of slavery. Often times, slavery was spoken of and written about in a positive light as if the slaves had chosen to stay in these harsh conditions. Authors such as Mark Twain and Charles Chesnutt provide an example of how blacks were portrayed and perceived during the post-Civil war era. The short stories “The Goopered Grapevine” and “A True Story: Repeated Word for Word as I Heard It” are just two examples of literature written during this time that encompasses how black Americans were depicted during their time of transition. There are similarities and differences of the portrayal of former slaves in subjects such as: how are African American slaves were portrayed through writing of the past, the importance of portraying the “perfect plantation”, and how slaves portray the forgiving spirit of the slave past that caused them so much hurt.
In Twain’s “A True Story” he writes about the narrative of a 60-year-old colored servant who recalls the hardships of being an enslaved black woman. “Misto C----” is the other character in the story whom Aunt Rachel is explaining the series of event to. Initially, Misto C----, who is the narrator, believed that Aunt Rachel lived an easy and plentiful life being that she was older and always cheerful. However, his prejudice was quite wrong. In explaining her story, Aunt Rachel discussed the time that all seven of her children and her husband were sold in a slave auction. Every time that one of her children or her husband were taken away to be sold, she would cry out in agony. Her pain and sorrow were followed by no remorse, as she was beaten and told to be quiet.
Despite experiencing this life altering event, Aunt Rachel was still required to fulfill her duties as a slave. The other whites that she was surrounded by showed no remorse as she grieved. Years later, Aunt Rachel was working at a Union Army post during the civil war. It was during this time that she was reunited with her youngest child, Henry, who was a soldier fighting in the war. Earlier in the story when Aunt Rachel was discussing the heart wrenching story that changed her outlook on life forever, she described the moment that she told her youngest child, Henry, that he would escape, and they would be together again. The reuniting of aunt Rachel and her son are believed to be a joyous one, being that Henry would bring Aunt Rachel a joy that she had not felt it years. However, Aunt Rachel seemed indifferent to meeting Henry, as if she had built some sort of wall up to hide her emotions. At the end of the short story, Aunt Rachael says, “Oh, no, Misto C—-, I hain’t had no trouble. An’ no joy!”. By making herself numb over the years to deal with her loss, Aunt Rachel figured out a way to live through a society that only saw her as a human or a person when she was needed or useful (Aftunion, 2014).
This short story written by Twain gives a more in depth outlook on how the women whom were slaves were expected to continue on with their lives even after being separated from their children. Aunt Rachel had no choice but to remain uplifted as she never expected to see her children again once they were ripped from her arms. Twain provides the audience with evidence of the mistreatment of black Americans as he describes in detail the auction that took place for the purchase of Aunt Rachel’s family. Often times, the details surrounding slave auctions are left out when authors write about slavery times to ensure that the “perfect plantation” idea and theory is not taunted. Instead of skipping over this life changing moment for Aunt Rachel, Twain provides us with detail of the dark agony she experienced. These explicit details allow for the audience to understand and visualize the covered-up pain Aunt Rachel is trying to describe to “Misto C-----“.
Charles Chesnutt, the author of “The Goophered Grapevine” was a black author and political activist best known for his novels and short stories that explore the complexity of racial issues and social identity during the post-Civil War era in the South. In his short story “The Goophered Grapevine” Chesnutt encompasses the effects that ruined plantations had on slaves during the transition from slavery to post-Civil War. Taking place in North Carolina, the story
begins with the narrator buying land from a former slave. The plantation was once used for the intent of growing grape vineyards so the owner of the land could make profits from selling wine. However, the land was ruined overtime as there were not enough workers to tend to the land.
The former slave, Julius McAdoo, is the first to encounter John, the purchaser, as they viewed the land to consider buying it. McAdoo was eating some of the grapes from the land when he was approached by the couple. In questioning the condition and history of the land, McAdoo gave the story of Aunt Peggy, a “goopher,” and Henry the slave. McAdoo begin the story by explaining that the land was once used to grow grape vineyards to make into wine. The plantation slaves and the slaves from surrounding plantations would eat the grapes, lowering the amount of profit that could be made from wine. In an effort to “save the plantation,” the owner paid $10 to Aunt Peggy, a free black woman who was known as a witch. Aunt Peggy prepared a concoction that would leave a spell on the grape plantation. If any of the slaves ate the grapes, Aunt Peggy promised that they would be dead in within a year. Realizing that the goopher worked as expected, Mars Dugal’ McAdoo, the land owner, went on to grow grapevines and sell wine in great profits.
Henry, the slave that Chesnutt introduces, plays an important role in the short story as he provides the audience with another look at the mistreatment of black Americans post-Civil War. As Henry wondered onto McAdoo’s land from a nearby plantation, none of the current slaves told him about the goophered grapes in the frenzy of having an escaped slave on their plantation. It was not until Henry had ate the grapes that he was told about the goopher. After Aunt Peggy lifted the goopher, Henry was able to eat the grapes.
Henry was fine up until the next spring when the grapes began to form. Henry grew stronger and faster. He became more youthful and grew a head full of hair that was long and curly. However, when the harvest was over, and the grapevines began to wither, so did Henry. He would become weak and all of his hair would fall out, not being able to come with the same energy that he had in the spring and summer. When the spring came back around, Henry would get strong again and would thrive throughout the summer with his downfall beginning at the end of harvest.
Mars Dugal’ decided to profit off of Henry by selling him in different counties at the beginning of spring for $1,500 and buying him back for $500 when he was withered in the winter. For five years, Mars Dugal was able to make profit from Henry and wine. Eventually, once the last of the grapevines died, so did Henry. It took three years for the vineyards to produce again, but by the time Mars Dugal’ was able to reap a decent crop, the Civil War broke out and he went off to fight. Julius McAdoo stayed on the land for years after the death, being the one to tell John and his wife the story. Once ending the tale, Julius warned John that the land may still have the “goopher” on it in an attempt to get him not to buy the plantation. Despite the warning, John and Annie bought the land, and it was found that Julius was living on the plantation and was making a small profit from the vineyards that were still usable on the field.
Chesnutt provides his audience with various themes surrounding money and finances throughout this short story. It is evident that the only importance that the slaves had was to make money for the plantation. No one was concerned with their well-being as shown in the selling and buying back of the slave, Henry. Henry was only needed during his prime time, or when he was strong and thriving. This short story also points to the idea of the slaves being stuck in the situation in which they were born, brought, or bought into. This is evident as Julius still lives and thrives off the plantation which caused most slaves so much pain. Julius is deciding to stick to what he knows instead of moving away from the pain of the past. Most slaves were in this same situation after the war. They did not have enough knowledge to understand what it truly meant to be free, and just as Julius did, they would protect what they had, even if they had to make up a tale to keep what they considered to be their own.
It is understandable if one believes that Aunt Rachel could have been holding back more details from Misto C---- of her horrific past, or that Uncle Julius was lying about the goopher due to the distrust of whites during this time. The post-Civil War era was a tough time for black Americans, especially when it came to trusting whites. When Julius was approached by John, it is likely that he made up a believable tall-tale that would save his home and money. Even more, Aunt Rachel continued to use humor throughout her story to help ease the terrible descriptions of her past. It is vital to realize that both of these short stories show us the similarities and differences in the portrayal of black Americans after the war. Both Aunt Rachel and Uncle Julius attempted to protect what little they did have.
In the short stories “A True Story” and “The Goophered Grapevine,” the main characters were given the title of “aunt” or “uncle”. Twain portrayed the resilient image of Aunt Rachel, while Chesnutt gave rise to the complex character of Uncle Julius. Although each character is a former slave, they are given these titles as a means to separate them from their white counterparts. Some readers have stated that the “aunt” and “uncle” terms were “white invention[s] [created] to alleviate the guilt associated with slavery by linguistically elevating some slaves to the status of "family" (Manring, 1995). This sense of family allowed for the slaves to separate the hurt of the past and bring light to the dark shadows of slavery. The image of the “aunt” and “uncle” is described and portrayed as old, black, worn, and uneducated shown through their dialect ("Can Anyone Speak To The Origins Of Using The Familial "Uncle" And "Aunt" For African Americans On Food Products Like "Uncle Ben's" And "Aunt Jemima", 2019).
Twain and Chesnutt display the former slaves in a vulnerable and comfortable setting, embracing the “perfect plantation” feeling most white Americans tried to place onto slavery. This was shown through the added humor from Aunt Rachel and “story telling” ideas from Uncle Julius that was added to both short stories. According to Ed Piacentino, Twain states that Aunt Rachel acts as if “she’s never had any trouble”, and while explaining some of the misfortunes in her life, Twain “employs Aunt Rachel at several key points in the sketch in a performative role by interjecting some entertaining comic moments” such as the notorious comment from her dear mother “I wa’nt bawn in the mash to be fool’ by trash! I’s one o’ de ole Blue Hen’s Chickens, I is.” Chesnutt uses the carpetbagger’s description of a “venerable-looking colored man” to describe Uncle Julius who is timid, but willing to tell the story of how the grapevine “is goophered,-cunju’d, bewitch,” (Lauter, 2014). At first glance, one would think that both characters were content with their lives as they took the time to tell stories of the past. This was all shown as a way to cover up or bring positivity to the “plantation past”.
Various differences do arise in the comparison of the writers and how they portray the forgiving spirit of the former slave’s past that caused them so much hurt. Mark Twain searches to show his audience the horrors of the slave past as Aunt Rachel tells the story of her husband and family being sold into slavery. Twain writes “dey put chains on us an’ put us on a stan’ as high as dis po’ch-twnety foot high…an’ dey sole my ole man, an’ took him away, an’ dey begin to sell my chil’en an’ take dem away, an’ I began to cry”. Aunt Rachel describes the raw emotion she felt when faced with losing all of her family. Charles Chesnutt decides to use more subtle statements to describe the horrors of the slave past as he mentions much about finances and food scarcity. Chesnutt uses Uncle Julius to explicitly state that “befo’ de wah, in slab’ry times, a nigger didn’ mine goin’ fi’ er ten mile in a night, w’en dey wuz sump’n good ter eat at de yuther een’.”
It is evident in this statement that there was mistreatment amongst the slaves as they had to travel miles by foot just to eat grapes. Although it seems that Uncle Julius remains respectful when speaking on Mars Dugal’ McAdoo, it is shown that McAdoo was a “cunning, ruthless, avaricious man who [was] always on the lookout for ways to make money.” (Render, 1989). McAdoo’s cunning attitude is attributed to his pawning of Henry back and forth, only needing him to work when he seemed to be at his best. In further contrast, Twain grants his main character with a positive outcome of slavery as Aunt Rachel recognizes her son as a solider in the kitchen. Chesnutt’s Uncle Julius is not as lucky, as the carpet bagger decides to go against Uncle Julius’s recommendations and purchases the cursed vineyard anyway (Lauter, 2014).
The before mentioned theme of forgiveness in former slaves is something that is commonly seen in all types of writing that depict blacks during the post-Civil War era. The images and stories of slavery that are circulating through society today are horrendous. Babies were ripped from their mother, men and women were sexually and physically abused, people were killed and hung from trees, and culture was taken away. However, it is far more often than not that society is presented with the forgiving slave, such as Julius and especially Aunt Rachel. Although it is not directly stated that either character, Aunt Rachel or Uncle Julius, were forgiving of what they went through, their willingness to stay around, tell stories, and be of help to the people around them proves that they have somewhat moved forward from their terrible past. Out of all of the hardships and hurt that they experienced from slavery, it is shocking that there are not more accounts of angry black Americans.
Additionally, when analyzing Julius and Aunt Rachel and comparing them to what we know about the treatment of blacks during the post-Civil War era, it can be seen that both characters are not very intellectual Their grammar and dialect show that they have been mostly successful at life by using their skills rather than books and learning. This is understandable as most slave owners did not allow their slaves to know how to read and write. This type of portrayal of slaves in both writings is interesting. Twain not only portrays all of the slave characters in his writing as such, but also comes from a state that was one of the last to abolish slavery. With a history of growing up in Missouri and being surrounded by slaves for majority of his life, his portrayal seems accurate from his experiences (Piacentino, 2011). However, Chesnutt depicted Julius as with a lower intellect as well through his dialect. Although Chesnutt was black himself, his depiction of black American’s during the post-Civil War era is similar to Twain’s and many other writers, maybe in an attempt to be accepted by his white counterparts or to show that he has the ability to withdraw himself from the text although he is of the same race of the ones being mistreated in his writings.
The post-bellum culture is still battling with the direct horrors of the past while trying to portray the lives of former slaves. Much of this is done with explaining how African American slaves are were portrayed through writings of the past, the importance of portraying the “perfect plantation”, and the forgiving spirit of the slave past that caused them so much hurt. These issues are still prevalent today as many former enslaved people have passed down traditions of distrust and discomfort of white Americans. Black Americans learned to supplement diets, hide their feelings and adapt to their masters or overseers to escape specific punishment that could be brought onto them by white Americans.

The Connection between American-style Slavery and American-style Freedom Many of Americas top defenders of freedom and liberty were slave owners. The ownership of human beings went entirely against everything the puritans believed in and were trying to build in this new land but, they still marched forward, disregarding the irony. The truth of the matter was that without slavery this nation would have never prospered. The connection between American-style slavery and American-style freedom is eerily ironic and it is so stingingly sad that human beings had to be enslaved in order to obtain the freedom desired from Great Britain. Slavery lasted in American history for 246 years and it lasted so long because without it the colonies would have never made it. In search of a new land separate from the other nations where freedom would be allowed, they came without the weapons, tools or ships to make their journey a success. They had to have help from other countries and tobacco, sugar, rice and coffee, harvested predominately by slaves, were their biggest tickets.
The establishment of slavery was important to the economy of the new land. Throughout American history stories have been recorded detailing the voyages many took in search of freedom and the voyages many took that began and ended in slavery. One of the first slave narratives written, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavas Vasa, the African, told the horrifying story of a young slave’s journey. This narrative told of his journey from the time of his capture to the time of his independence. Bought and sold many times throughout his journey, the most horrifying captivity was on the slave ship. The journey on the slave trade route between Europe, America and Africa was terrifyingly brutal. The settlers sought freedom from Great Britain and along the way ended up denying the rights for freedom to many who bore a different skin color. As Eric Foner stated in, Give me Liberty!, Fifth Seagull Edition, The eighteenth century was a time of “the simultaneous expansion of freedom and slavery” (133). The desire for freedom was something that all slaves had in common. Some were fortunate enough to have slave owners that would eventually grant their freedom but, most did not. During the eighteenth century many blacks put their lives in danger, runaway slaves, with the sole purpose of seeking freedom from slavery. Many rebellions, were also started throughout this time in history, rebellions against slavery and rebellions against Britain. These rebellious times eventually lead to the formal declaration of independence from Britain.
As stated in Give Me Liberty!, Fifth Seagull Edition, In February 1776, the Massachusetts political leader Joseph Hawley read Common Sense and remarked, “Every sentiment has sunk into my well prepared heart.” The hearts of Hawley and thousands of other Americans had been prepared for Paine’s arguments by the entended conflict over Britain’s right to tax the colonies, the outbreak of war in 1775, and the growing conviction that Britain was a corrupt society where liberty was diminishing. The intensification of fighting in the winter of 1775-1776, when Americans unsuccessfully invaded Canada while the British burned Falmouth (now Portland), Maine, and bombarded Norfolk, Virginia, gave added weight to the movement for independence. In the spring of 1776, scores of American communities adopted resolutions calling for a separation from Britain. Only six months elapsed between the appearance of Common Sense and the decision by the Second Continental Congress to sever the colonies’ ties with Great Britain (199). The Americans would still have a long road ahead of them, their declaration of independence was not all that was needed, they had to fight and win their independence from Britain. Their battle for independence was finally gained in September 1783 with the Treaty of Paris which gained the recognition of American independence. The fights would now begin for individual freedoms in the Americas for women and slaves and many battles for these independences were fought with the very ones who signed the Declaration of Independence.
Of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence 41 of them were slave holders. Of the 55 delegates to the Constitutional convention about 25 of them were slaveholders. Thomas Jefferson was the third US president, the author of the Declaration of Independence and was a leader in the development of the United States. Thomas Jefferson owned over 600 slaves throughout the course of his life. Jefferson had four quarter farms and a retreat home, tobacco was a very labor-intensive choice of crop that required a large force of laborers to be profitable. Jefferson acquired most of his slaves through inheritance and self-reproducing slavery, actually purchasing less than twenty slaves himself. He knew that slavery was the primary reason for success in the south and throughout his lifetime and at his death only freed seven slaves. James Madison was another former president that owned slaves. He had grown up in a family that owned slaves and throughout his lifetime owned over 100 slaves, never freeing any of them. Yet, as stated in mytimes.com, “insisted that enslaved Africans were entitled to a right to liberty and proposed that Congress purchase all slaves in the United States and set them free” (mytimes.com). How ironic is it that the very ones who were so instrumental in declaring this country with the idea that all men are created equal, were slaveholders?
In Southhampton County, Virginia, in August 1831, a slave rebellion began led by Nat Turner, a black American slave. Turner and several of his fellow slaves began by murdering their master and his family with axes. They then gathered weapons, swords and guns and set out on a killing spree through the countryside, going from house to house killing everyone and releasing slaves, some of which joined them on their killing spree. According to Nat Turner, while playing with some friends at the age of three or four he was overheard by his mom telling the other children something. Something, confirmed by his mom, that had happened before he was born. This led the older people to believe that he was a prophet because God had shown him things that happened before he was born. Nat Turner’s parents thought that he was “intended for some great purpose” which they thought because of marks he had on his head and breast. (Confessions of Nat Turner 7) Turner believed that the daytime darkening of the sky, during a solar eclipse, was a sign from God to start planning for his rebellion. The deadliest slave rebellion in history was what many had feared would happen if men of any color were held in slavery.
Abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison spent their lives trying to right the wrongs of slavery unlike the southern slave-holders who justified the “peculiar institution.” Garrison was an American journalist, who started his own newspaper, The Liberator, which fought to abolish slavery. While one’s like Garrison fought to abolish slavery, the southern slave-holders saw the need to hold a tighter grip on the one’s they enslaved. The need for the “peculiar institution” was because of the increased demand for cotton. The south became the largest slave society. In doing this assignment, I learned that the very things this country was founded on, as stated in the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” were begrudged from men and women of color. In the founding fathers’ eyes, black men and women were not equal, they did not have the same rights as the white man. (UShistory.org) While seeking freedom from Great Britain the unalienable rights of mankind were not honored. The founding fathers became the oppressors who lost sight of what was right and at all cost used human beings to make their dreams a reality.

When Bill was a kid he had big plans. Bill was the one who made Microsoft real. One of the guys he used to work with told him “this is the stupidest thing I have ever heard”. When he first starting working on Microsoft he was a mess. For instance at his work desk he had pizza crust all over his desk top. He also wore the same shirt everyday, and it had pizza stains all over it. Judging by his looks you would never tell he was easily the richest man in the United states. In his earlier days Gates attend Lakeside school(1967-1973) and Harvard(1973-1975. Gates was born on October 28, 1955 which puts him at the age of 63. Bill now lives in Seattle Washington. Bill Gates’ full name is William Henry Gates. Today Bills net worth is 97.3 billion dollars. Currently he is not the richest man alive know. Jeff Bezos the founder of amazon net worth is 133 billion dollars.
In March Bill Gates took Microsoft public. He took it with a public offering of $21 a share on (page 35). Making him a millionaire at age 31. Gates held 45 percent of the company 24.7 million shares making his stake at that time $234 million of Microsoft's $520 million.The company's stock increased in value and split numerous times. Bill Gates became a billionaire when the stock hit $90.75 a share. Since then Gates has been at the top or at least near the top of the richest list of the top 400 wealthiest people in America. In 1999 with stock prices at an all high and the stock splitting, fold since its the percent of the company Gates wealth briefly topped $101 billion. That's a lot of money for a 31 year old. Also on Page 34 Microsoft invested $150 million of Apple products in 1997 to help rescue the trouble company.
In 1997 Gates and his family moved into a 66,000-square-foot $123 million house on the shore of Lake Washington. Though the house serves as a business center, it also is very warm and just a nice house for the couple and their three children.
In 1987 a 23 year old Microsoft product manager named Melinda French caught the eye of Bill Gates. The very bright and organized Melinda was a perfect match for Gates. In time their relationship grew as they discovered a connection. On January 1, 1994 Melinda and Bill were married in Hawaii. But Gates’ Mother shortly died after from breast cancer just a few months after their wedding Bill and Melinda Gates took some time off. In 1995 they traveled and found a new perspective on life and the world. In 1996 their first daughter Jennifer was born. Their son Rory was born in 1999 and a second daughter Phoebe arrived in 2002. Gates parents are William H. Gates Sr. and Mary Maxwell Gates.
In 1994 Bill and Melinda Gates established the William H. Gates Foundation which was supporting education in world health and investment in low income communities. With Melinda's influence Bill had taken an interest in becoming a civic leader in the footsteps of his mother studying the work of American industrial titans Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. He realized that he had a choice to give more of his wealth to charity. Over the next few years Bill’s Foundation occupied much of his time and even more of his interest to his foundation. In the book it states ‘in January 2000 there were 2 foundation that combined into a new body’( on page 39).Gates announced he was putting himself from full time work at Microsoft to devote more quality time to the foundation. His last full day at Microsoft was June 27, 2008. In February 2014 Gates stepped down as leader of Microsoft in order to move into a new position as technology adviser longtime.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was replaced by 46 year old Satya Nadella. Bill continues towards put his time and energy to the work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The organization takes all kinds of issues such as health and education and helping students in the United States become college ready. In 2015 Gates spoke out in favor of National Common Core standards in grades K through 12 at schools. Gates also proved to be a groundbreaking employer when and around this time the foundation announced that it would give its employees a year paid leave after the birth or the adoption of a child. In 2017, the foundation launched the first of what was to become its annual Goalkeepers, report an examination of progress made in several important areas related to public health, including child mortality malnutrition and HIV. At the time Gates identified infectious and chronic disease as the two biggest public health concerns that needed to be addressed over the coming decade.
Bill as you know has a lot of money. He has so much money that he gives it away. He makes $101 a second so if he drops $100 bill it is not worth his time to pick it up. In the (book page 43) he says ‘a wonderful time to be alive’ he says that because Bill believes that if children are healthy and well cared for they can use their energy and intelligence to improve their lives. Bill also signed a document that he will give 95% of his wealth away. Bill Gates has given away 2.5 billion away to world care $1.5 billion to education $158 million to libraries $262 million to pacific west projects and others projects $382 million all together he has gave away $4.8 billion of his money. As you can see Bill Gates is one of the most richest guys in the world, but yet he is a billionaire he is also one of the kindest and nicest person you will ever meet.

William Henry Gates III is an American Business Magnate
William Henry Gates III (born October 28, 1955) is an American business magnate, investor, author, philanthropist, and humanitarian. He is best known as the principal founder of Microsoft Corporation.[2][3] During his career at Microsoft, Gates held the positions of chairman, CEO and chief software architect, while also being the largest individual shareholder until May 2014.
In 1975, Gates and Paul Allen launched Microsoft, which became the world's largest PC software company.[4][a] Gates led the company as chief executive officer until stepping down in January 2000, but he remained as chairman and created the position of chief software architect for himself.[7] In June 2006, Gates announced that he would be transitioning from full-time work at Microsoft to part-time work and full-time work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was established in 2000.[8] He gradually transferred his duties to Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie.[9] He stepped down as chairman of Microsoft in February 2014 and assumed a new post as technology adviser to support the newly appointed CEO Satya Nadella.[10]
Gates is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution. He has been criticized for his business tactics, which have been considered anti-competitive. This opinion has been upheld by numerous court rulings.[11]
Since 1987, Gates has been included in the Forbes list of the world's wealthiest people, an index of the wealthiest documented individuals, excluding and ranking against those with wealth that is not able to be completely ascertained.[12][13] From 1995 to 2017, he held the Forbes title of the richest person in the world all but four of those years, and held it consistently from March 2014 to July 2017, with an estimated net worth of US$89.9 billion as of October 2017.[1] However, on July 27, 2017, and since October 27, 2017, he has been surpassed by Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, who had an estimated net worth of US$90.6 billion at the time.[14] As of August 6, 2018, Gates had a net worth of $95.4 billion, making him the second-richest person in the world, behind Bezos.
Later in his career and since leaving Microsoft, Gates pursued a number of philanthropic endeavors. He donated large amounts of money to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.[15] In 2009, Gates and Warren Buffett founded The Giving Pledge, whereby they and other billionaires pledge to give at least half of their wealth to philanthropy.[16] The foundation works to save lives and improve global health, and is working with Rotary International to eliminate polio.[17]
Early life
Gates was born in Seattle, Washington, on October 28, 1955. He is the son of William H. Gates Sr.[b] (b. 1925) and Mary Maxwell Gates (1929–1994). His ancestry includes English, German, Irish, and Scots-Irish.[18][19] His father was a prominent lawyer, and his mother served on the board of directors for First Interstate BancSystem and the United Way. Gates' maternal grandfather was J.W. Maxwell, a national bank president. Gates has one older sister, Kristi (Kristianne), and a younger sister, Libby. He is the fourth of his name in his family, but is known as William Gates III or "Trey" because his father had the "II" suffix.[20] The family lived in the Sand Point area of Seattle in a home that was once damaged by a rare tornado when Gates was nine years old.[21] Early on in his life, Gates observed that his parents wanted him to pursue a law career.[22] When Gates was young, his family regularly attended a church of the Congregational Christian Churches, a Protestant Reformed denomination.[23][24][25] The family encouraged competition; one visitor reported that "it didn't matter whether it was hearts or pickleball or swimming to the dock ... there was always a reward for winning and there was always a penalty for losing".[26]
At 13, he enrolled in the Lakeside School, a private preparatory school[27] and wrote his first software program.[28] When Gates was in the eighth grade, the Mothers' Club at the school used proceeds from Lakeside School's rummage sale to buy a Teletype Model 33 ASR terminal and a block of computer time on a General Electric (GE) computer for the school's students.[29] Gates took an interest in programming the GE system in BASIC, and was excused from math classes to pursue his interest. He wrote his first computer program on this machine: an implementation of tic-tac-toe that allowed users to play games against the computer. Gates was fascinated by the machine and how it would always execute software code perfectly. When he reflected back on that moment, he said, "There was just something neat about the machine."[30] After the Mothers Club donation was exhausted, he and other students sought time on systems including DEC PDP minicomputers. One of these systems was a PDP-10 belonging to Computer Center Corporation (CCC), which banned four Lakeside students – Gates, Paul Allen, Ric Weiland, and Kent Evans – for the summer after it caught them exploiting bugs in the operating system to obtain free computer time.[31][32]
At the end of the ban, the four students offered to find bugs in CCC's software in exchange for extra computer time. Rather than use the system via Teletype[clarification needed], Gates went to CCC's offices and studied source code for various programs that ran on the system, including programs in Fortran, Lisp, and machine language. The arrangement with CCC continued until 1970, when the company went out of business. The following year, Information Sciences, Inc. hired the four Lakeside students to write a payroll program in COBOL, providing them computer time and royalties. After his administrators became aware of his programming abilities, Gates wrote the school's student information system software to schedule students in classes. He modified the code so that he was placed in classes with "a disproportionate number of interesting girls."[33] He later stated that "it was hard to tear myself away from a machine at which I could so unambiguously demonstrate success."[30] At age 17, Gates formed a venture with Allen, called Traf-O-Data, to make traffic counters based on the Intel 8008 processor.[34] In 1972, Bill Gates served as a congressional page in the U.S. House of Representatives.[35][36]
Gates was a National Merit Scholar when he graduated from Lakeside School in 1973.[37] He scored 1590 out of 1600 on the Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT) and enrolled at Harvard College in the autumn of 1973.[38][39] He chose a pre-law major but took mathematics and graduate level computer science courses.[40] While at Harvard, he met fellow student Steve Ballmer. Gates left Harvard after two years while Ballmer would stay and graduate magna cum laude. Years later, Ballmer succeeded Gates as Microsoft's CEO. He maintained that position from 2000 until his resignation from the company in 2014.[41]
In his second year, Gates devised an algorithm for pancake sorting as a solution to one of a series of unsolved problems[42] presented in a combinatorics class by Harry Lewis, one of his professors. Gates' solution held the record as the fastest version for over thirty years;[42][43] its successor is faster by only one percent.[42] His solution was later formalized in a published paper in collaboration with Harvard computer scientist Christos Papadimitriou.[44]
Gates did not have a definite study plan while he was a student at Harvard,[45] and he spent a lot of time using the school's computers. Gates remained in contact with Paul Allen, and he joined him at Honeywell during the summer of 1974.[46] The MITS Altair 8800 was released the following year. The new computer was based on the Intel 8080 CPU, and Gates and Allen saw this as the opportunity to start their own computer software company.[47] Gates dropped out of Harvard at this time. He had talked over this decision with his parents, who were supportive of him after seeing how much their son wanted to start his own company.[45] Gates explained his decision to leave Harvard, saying "... if things [Microsoft] hadn't worked out, I could always go back to school. I was officially on [a] leave [of absence].
After Gates read the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics, which demonstrated the Altair 8800, he contacted Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), the creators of the new microcomputer, to inform them that he and others were working on a BASIC interpreter for the platform.[49] In reality, Gates and Allen did not have an Altair and had not written code for it; they merely wanted to gauge MITS's interest. MITS president Ed Roberts agreed to meet them for a demo, and over the course of a few weeks they developed an Altair emulator that ran on a minicomputer, and then the BASIC interpreter. The demonstration, held at MITS's offices in Albuquerque, was a success and resulted in a deal with MITS to distribute the interpreter as Altair BASIC. Paul Allen was hired into MITS,[50] and Gates took a leave of absence from Harvard to work with Allen at MITS in Albuquerque in November 1975. They named their partnership "Micro-Soft" and had their first office located in Albuquerque.[50] Within a year, the hyphen was dropped, and on November 26, 1976, the trade name "Microsoft" was registered with the Office of the Secretary of the State of New Mexico.[50] Gates never returned to Harvard to complete his studies.
Microsoft's Altair BASIC was popular with computer hobbyists, but Gates discovered that a pre-market copy had leaked into the community and was being widely copied and distributed. In February 1976, Gates wrote an Open Letter to Hobbyists in the MITS newsletter in which he asserted that more than 90 percent of the users of Microsoft Altair BASIC had not paid Microsoft for it and by doing so the Altair "hobby market" was in danger of eliminating the incentive for any professional developers to produce, distribute, and maintain high-quality software.[51] This letter was unpopular with many computer hobbyists, but Gates persisted in his belief that software developers should be able to demand payment. Microsoft became independent of MITS in late 1976, and it continued to develop programming language software for various systems.[50] The company moved from Albuquerque to its new home in Bellevue, Washington, on January 1, 1979.[49]
During Microsoft's early years, all employees had broad responsibility for the company's business. Gates oversaw the business details, but continued to write code as well. In the first five years, according to Bill Gates' own claims, he personally reviewed every line of code the company shipped, and often rewrote parts of it as he saw fit.[52][unreliable source?]
IBM approached Microsoft in July 1980 in reference to an operating system for its upcoming personal computer, the IBM PC.[53] IBM first proposed that Microsoft write the BASIC interpreter. When IBM's representatives mentioned that they needed an operating system, Gates referred them to Digital Research (DRI), makers of the widely used CP/M operating system.[54] IBM's discussions with Digital Research went poorly, and they did not reach a licensing agreement. IBM representative Jack Sams mentioned the licensing difficulties during a subsequent meeting with Gates and told him to get an acceptable operating system. A few weeks later, Gates proposed using 86-DOS (QDOS), an operating system similar to CP/M that Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products (SCP) had made for hardware similar to the PC. Microsoft made a deal with SCP to become the exclusive licensing agent, and later the full owner, of 86-DOS. After adapting the operating system for the PC, Microsoft delivered it to IBM as PC DOS in exchange for a one-time fee of $50,000.[55]
Gates did not offer to transfer the copyright on the operating system, because he believed that other hardware vendors would clone IBM's system.[55] They did, and the sales of MS-DOS made Microsoft a major player in the industry.[56] Despite IBM's name on the operating system, the press quickly identified Microsoft as being very influential on the new computer. PC Magazine asked if Gates were "the man behind the machine?",[53] and InfoWorld quoted an expert as stating "it's Gates' computer".[57] Gates oversaw Microsoft's company restructuring on June 25, 1981, which re-incorporated the company in Washington state and made Gates the president of Microsoft and its board chairman.[49]
Windows
Microsoft launched its first retail version of Microsoft Windows on November 20, 1985. In August of the following year, the company struck a deal with IBM to develop a separate operating system called OS/2. Although the two companies successfully developed the first version of the new system, the partnership deteriorated due to mounting creative differences.[58]

From Microsoft's founding in 1975 until 2006, Gates had primary responsibility for the company's product strategy. He gained a reputation for being distant from others; as early as 1981 an industry executive complained in public that "Gates is notorious for not being reachable by phone and for not returning phone calls."[59] Another executive recalled that he showed Gates a game and defeated him 35 of 37 times. When they met again a month later, Gates "won or tied every game. He had studied the game until he solved it. That is a competitor."[60]
Gates was an executive who met regularly with Microsoft's senior managers and program managers. In firsthand accounts of these meetings, the managers described him being verbally combative. He also berated managers for perceived holes in their business strategies or proposals that placed the company's long-term interests at risk.[61][62] He interrupted presentations with such comments as "That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard!"[63] and "Why don't you just give up your options and join the Peace Corps?"[64] The target of his outburst then had to defend the proposal in detail until, hopefully, Gates was fully convinced.[63] When subordinates appeared to be procrastinating, he was known to remark sarcastically, "I'll do it over the weekend."[65][66][67]
During Microsoft's early history, Gates was an active software developer, particularly in the company's programming language products, but his basic role in most of the company's history was primarily as a manager and executive. Gates has not officially been on a development team since working on the TRS-80 Model 100,[68] but as late as 1989 he wrote code that shipped with the company's products.[66] He remained interested in technical details; in 1985, Jerry Pournelle wrote that when he watched Gates announce Microsoft Excel, "Something else impressed me. Bill Gates likes the program, not because it's going to make him a lot of money (although I'm sure it will do that), but because it's a neat hack."[69]
On June 15, 2006, Gates announced that over the next two years he would transition out of his day-to-day role to dedicate more time to philanthropy. He divided his responsibilities between two successors when he placed Ray Ozzie in charge of day-to-day management and Craig Mundie in charge of long-term product strange.
Many decisions that led to antitrust litigation over Microsoft's business practices have had Gates' approval. In the 1998 United States v. Microsoft case, Gates gave deposition testimony that several journalists characterized as evasive. He argued with examiner David Boies over the contextual meaning of words such as, "compete", "concerned", and "we". The judge and other observers in the court room were seen laughing at various points during the deposition.[71] BusinessWeek reported:
Early rounds of his deposition show him offering obfuscatory answers and saying 'I don't recall,' so many times that even the presiding judge had to chuckle. Worse, many of the technology chief's denials and pleas of ignorance were directly refuted by prosecutors with snippets of e-mail that Gates both sent and received.[72]
Gates later said he had simply resisted attempts by Boies to mischaracterize his words and actions. As to his demeanor during the deposition, he said, "Did I fence with Boies? ... I plead guilty. Whatever that penalty is should be levied against me: rudeness to Boies in the first degree."[73] Despite Gates' denials, the judge ruled that Microsoft had committed monopolization and tying, and blocking competition, both in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act.[73]
Appearance in ads
In 2008, Gates appeared in a series of ads to promote Microsoft. The first commercial, co-starring Jerry Seinfeld, is a 90-second talk between strangers as Seinfeld walks up on a discount shoe store (Shoe Circus) in a mall and notices Gates buying shoes inside. The salesman is trying to sell Mr. Gates shoes that are a size too big. As Gates is buying the shoes, he holds up his discount card, which uses a slightly altered version of his own mugshot of his arrest in New Mexico in 1977, for a traffic violation.[74] As they are walking out of the mall, Seinfeld asks Gates if he has melded his mind to other developers. After getting a "Yes", he then asks if they are working on a way to make computers edible, again getting a "Yes". Some say that this is an homage to Seinfeld's own show about "nothing" (Seinfeld).[75] In a second commercial in the series, Gates and Seinfeld are at the home of an average family trying to fit in with normal people.[76]
Post-Microsoft
Gates meets with U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis, February 2017. Since leaving day-to-day operations at Microsoft, Gates has continued his philanthropy and works on other projects. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Gates was the world's highest-earning billionaire in 2013, as his net worth increased by US$15.8 billion to US$78.5 billion.

Bill Gates as a Role Model
The role model that I choose is Bill Gates, an American businessman, investor, author, philanthrophist, humanitarian and best known as the principal founder of Microsoft Corporation. He launched Microsoft Corporation together with Paul Allen as his co-founder. He held the position as chairman, CEO and chief software architect in his organization and best-known as the entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution as he had primary responsibility for the company's product strategy. His organization has becoming the world’s largest PC software company throughout the world and grew into one of the great success stories of the personal computer era.
Bill Gates has the managerial role that describes him as the good leader. Firstly, the interpersonal role describes him for managing relationships with organizational members. For example, Bill Gates does his job as the leader in term of chairman and chief software architect. It is his responsibility to direct and coordinate the activities of his employees in order to achieve the goals of his organization. Gates once said that a leader gets in there and rolls his sleeves up because success it is not just about thinking up a good idea but it requires action and the passion to put the effort into turning that good idea into a sustainable revenue machine. At the same time, he acts as figurehead after establishing the private charitable foundation with his wife. As the figurehead, he is one good example of businessman that works to save lives and improve global health through his foundation. Gates has donates $35.8 billion worth of Microsoft stocks to his private charitable foundation.
Besides, the informational role describes his responsibility to gather and disseminate information to the stakeholder of the organization. Gates has this role as he needs to know all the information especially within the area involving the modern technologies. As his name is on the lists of billionaires several times, he shows his efforts to improve his communication and public speaking skills from his mentor in order to be a good leader. Gates is also known for his wisdom in seeking council from others. He often speaks of how much he has learned from Warren Buffett, the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and is one of the world’s wealthiest men. It is because Gates knows that success would not happen overnight but it will be the culmination of a lot of hard work. Even after Microsoft began gaining success, Gates worked long days and nights on understanding the target audience and developing the products that would speak to their business, education and consumer needs. This shows the responsibility of him to gather the information about the world’s news instead of only giving the wisdom to his employees to decide everything as the result of him knowing nothing about the world market.
Moreover, the last role of becoming the manager or a leader is decisional role which describes his responsibility to process the tremendous amount of information and reach the conclusions. This role has the relation with the conceptual skill of a leader. It is about the ability to process the information because as the leader, Gates needs to make a decision about the matter within internal or external environment as long as it is related to his organization, profit, and the competition in the market. It is important for him to decide everything as he needs to think the risks, benefit and the individuals that can be influenced in each of his decision. At the same time, Bill Gates is a man with vision. For example, it was his vision that inspired him to pursue the creation of Microsoft software. His ability to see the vision and share with the others make it easy for others to follow him. This may also describes him as the leader that can be accounted for his decision as he recognized the potential for growth and opportunity easily. Bill Gates is one who continues to look forward, unfazed by any barriers or missteps along the way. For other example, he did have to contend with anti-trust litigation claiming that Microsoft was a monopoly. In 2011, after a 21-year battle in the court system, the case was finally put to rest after numerous threats to break the company up. Throughout the battle, Gates continued to pursue the strategy that he had laid out and stayed the course, preferring to focus on the future rather than be distracted by present challenges. This shows the decisional role of him for being head up to face the problem bravely.
Next, Bill Gates also has the human skill which is the ability to work with others. For example, Gates was an executive who met regularly with Microsoft's senior managers and program managers. On their first meeting, the managers described him for being verbally combative. He also berated managers for perceived holes in their business strategies or proposals that placed the company's long-term interests at risk. This shows that he is very straightforward person. But, his employees are able to adapt to his leadership style as he can guide his employees very well. But, he is the one who can be an admirable leader as he has taken charge to help others by guiding them in the right direction, imparting knowledge, and experience, or even providing the necessary resources that will improve the lives or careers of others. Gates has always taken a selfless approach to his leadership, spending considerable money and time in philanthropic efforts to give to others. In return, as a leader, he receives happiness by knowing he is providing benefits that can create the leaders of the future who will then shape the planet for those generations to come. This shows the ability of him to influence his employees as the result of working together with them.
Lastly, as the chief software architect, this shows the management skills that he has not only as the leader but also the technical skills that also important to live a life as a leader. Gates was an active software developer, particularly in the company's programming language products, but his basic role in most of the company's history was primarily as a manager and executive. It is important for the leader to have this skill because Gates is the one who established the Microsoft Corporation. So he needs to know the basis of his own organization as his employees may ask his guidance about something in their field and if Gates do not know on how to handle that problem, this may cause the problem to explode more.
In conclusion, as the leader Bill Gates leads his organization with the roles as the leader correctly. Every action taken by him shows directly how he can develop something new and guided his employees in the right way. Thus, without the managerial skills and managerial roles, a leader may not be able to lead the organization.

Early Childhood
Bill Gates was born on October 28th, 1955 in Seattle, Washington. He was in a wealthy family, and he grew up very close to his mom. They often went to local schools and charity and they helped. He was always competitive, and he excelled in monopoly. He was always smart in school and so were his parents. He had a small family, only his dad, mom, sister, and himself.
Early Adulthood
Bill excelled in school and he got a 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT. In the fall of 1973 Bill went to Harvard. He was a very smart student and went to school for law. He dropped out his second year because he found himself in the computer lab and fascinated with computers more than class. He was motivated with computers, so Bill and his friend Paul Allen created Microsoft after dropping out of college.
What Made Him Successful
As you probably know Microsoft made Bill Gates successful. Bill Gates was extremely smart and even though he dropped out of college he doesn't regret his decision because Microsoft made him the Richest man in the world currently. Microsoft was Bill Gates “big break” as expected, he didn’t fail with any other companies. Bill Gates was an extremely smart man, so his obstacles weren’t as dramatic as many others. Bill Gates always tried and never gave up. He would think outside of the box whenever he failed. He also thought nothing is impossible and there is always an answer to his problem.
Accomplishments
Bill Gates never stopped making inventions he was always updating what he made and making more things. As you know Microsoft is a huge company and they have many inventions. On your computer if you have a PC you probably have windows as your software, windows is a software from Microsoft. Bill gates made plenty of software's. He was a very busy man and he made everything that he thought would change people lives. If he thought that a product could help people and himself in daily life. He did just that, his products changed technology and our life.
Charity
Bill Gates loved to give back to the community. He has given back the community since he was a little kid. When he was younger him and his mom would always go to charity events, so giving back is in his blood. He has his own foundation in 1994 the “Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.” In 2014 Bill dropped down to the chairman at Microsoft. He wanted to put more focus on his charity. He did just that and worked a lot on the “Bill and Melinda gates Foundation” as much as he Microsoft he was ready to focus on what he finds important, charity.

Childhood
William Henry Gates the third was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle Washington. William Henry Gates, more commonly referred to as Bill Gates, was born into an upper-middle class family with 2 sisters. One older, and one younger. As a young kid, he was very competitive and enjoyed games. Monopoly was one of his favorites and he is all time favorite was Risk. He enjoyed reading lots and lots of books when he was younger too. He especially enjoyed encyclopedias (which is kind of weird but okay) and he read the entire thing when he was only 7 years old. He did very well in school but around age 11-12 Bill seemed very bored with his work. This was a huge struggle for him as he started to lose interest in school and in 13, he enrolled in a private school, which he liked better, and he excelled at math and science. And this is where his love for computers grew, the school had a teletype terminal and got answers from an actual computer. Which where the size of rooms at the time.
Early Adulthood
In early adulthood, Bill enrolled in Harvard, only to drop out later. Yes, Bill Gates one of the richest men in the world was a Harvard dropout. He also had a 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT, which is completely insane. He dropped out in 1975 after 2 years there. He originally went to Harvard for law school. Hover, he spent more time in the computer lab then in class, and this made him want to start a computer software company. Prior to going to college, he and Paul Allen started a company and they netted 20,000 dollars from it. They re-joined together after they dropped out of college to form Micro-soft in 1975. By 1979 the company earned over 2.5 million per year. Bill also placed himself at the head of the company.
Big Break
Bill was inspired to become successful by his own personality. He is always striving to become better at what he does, and he is very competitive. Their big break was in the late 60s when he made a program called Traf O Data which measured traffic flow in Seattle. This earned him and his friend Paul Allen 20,000 dollars. This helped start them off. Then in 1979, they formed Micro-soft. They were able to sell their software quickly and by 1979 they were making millions per year, the same year that they founded the company! Bill had to go back to college after founding Microsoft, because his parents didn’t want him dropping out of college. However, he was not focused on school. His next leave from Harvard would then be permanent. Bill had dropped out of college which was very hard for him.
Success
Bill Gates built upon his success in many ways, as he is now a billionaire, and Microsoft is a massive company. His small system got a contract from IBM which was a huge accomplishment for small Microsoft. The company's size grew as well. He had 500 employees in 1983 and could no longer remember everyone’s name. Bill kept working as hard as he could and coming out with new inventions, like windows. In fact, Bill was a very active boss. In 1985, windows came out with a mouse that was revolutionary. However, this caught apple’s attention and tried to sue them. However, Microsoft won in court. Bill Gates also helped invent the PC, which most everyone has at home now. Microsoft has also created game consoles, like the Xbox.
Good Deeds
Bill Gates is a very big philanthropist after his mother. His mother was very involved in charity until her death. His wife Melinda also likes charity. They agreed to give away 95% of their wealth. That is quite a sum of money. He founded the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation which he has donated billions to. He has also vaccinated many poor people to keep them from getting sick.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates promised to give away more than half of his fortune to a charitable organization. Bill’s Foundation has given away over $14.3 billion to various international schools, as well as, helped society by creating many job opportunities for those people who are interested in technology, people who don’t know where to go with a bachelor’s degree, or for the ones who have a high school diploma. He wants everyone to have a career and have some type of income while they are in the business. He’s working on making the world a better place than it already is he wants the world to be more advanced than it already is. Bill Gates has created a lot of access for people with his advanced technology so that people can take their minds off stress or use the software for entertainment purposes. Bill Gates has positively affected America's society with his wealth. His critical thinking is positively affecting the world with advanced technology, jobs, and education.
To begin, it’s not a mystery that Bill Gates is a world-known billionaire. He developed Microsoft so that people can enjoy his software, like for instance, the windows computer software. Windows gave people the opportunity to think outside the box. Bill Gates has given his computers to over 10,000 public libraries so that anyone could have better access to resources.
He has created a solution to work from home with computer software Microsoft Word, etc. He created this so that people could find their career path. Microsoft is the main key to help people when their working at home or, in an office or, on the go. Additionally, it gave everyone a chance to explore the internet to find resources, articles, biographies, etc. To further explain his love for technology, Bill Gates has teamed up with plenty of CPU companies to create Microsoft’s very own first gaming console called the “Xbox”. It is one of the top three gaming consoles all over the world with its aesthetic features, and fascinating overlook of technology. In the early 2000’s, the Xbox was there for people to discover their imagination on a totally different level. It’s impressive features of different graphics made the “Xbox” one of the best consoles to ever be enjoyable, with its features of playing online with your friends in different cities, states, and even countries. It was created for people who wanted to take their excitement to a different level. His craft was to take his technology to a whole different level, so he decided to take his money somewhere else.
He wanted to create innovative toilets for the third world countries because of all the diseases and germs. There are many innocent adults and children dying from the diseases contracted from bacteria in small poverty cities. The newly innovated toilets can prevent germs with its fascinating features. Its useful function is to take human waste and refurnish it into clean refreshed water. With the help of his wife Bill’s foundation which would save the innocent people around the world, especially in third world countries. He partnered with Gavi for vaccines, and teamed with the global fund for HIV, TB, and Malaria. His foundation fund and basic vaccines packages, and contraception in developing countries. His goal is to reduce the numerous sepsis cases and premature deaths of babies when women give birth. Furthermore, the foundation is trying to help improve the dieting system in the third world countries to prevent the continual growth of malnutrition.
Bill Gates wanted to start a foundation for people who can’t get an education because of the schools closing in the local poverty-stricken areas. With the help of his wife Melinda Gates he has helped poor schools around the world so that the youth could have a bright and better future. Bill and Melinda Gates put over 1.7 billion dollars total for schools all around the world. According to Bloomberg politics, "We're not inventing anything in this strategy. We're taking what we learned from research and experience," said Bob Hughes, who leads Gates' K-12 education program. Gates agreed to give over 460 million dollars over the next five years for network supplies school programs.
By the end of 2018, the program was left with over 280 million dollars. The Gates family believed that any and everyone deserves an education no matter their circumstances. He put 280 million dollars to use for the low-income schools in need. Bill and Melinda Gates made it their top priority in the U.S. help the border of education, and it has been completed with their curiosity and courage to advance, the education program. They’ve gotten over 20,000 scholarships total from colleges all over the world for students who can’t afford college. Bill and Melinda’s foundation believed k-12 students should have an education to increase their tests scores, like for example math and English, and should receive an opportunity to understand their academics. Microsoft has been a tremendous success for Bill Gates, but he wants to help everyone who are inspired with his success. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the program to find jobs that are available for the ones in need. The foundation is there for people finding careers like public health, legal, public policy and global communication. According to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation website “We believe that energized people work well together” stated on their fueled by great leadership, in an environment in which they thrive on doing phenomenal things. This foundation is here to guide adult students who didn’t have an idea on what they’ve wanted to do with their life. This foundation brought life to the world with its interest in jobs, and for those in need of either full- time management, accounting or financing. Bill and Melinda wanted to take things to the next level for people in need of a career. This foundation has Est. to 4.8 billion dollars for employers. In the article “Melinda Gates Quotes,” according to Melinda Gates, “If you are successful, it is because somewhere, sometime, someone gave you a life or an idea that started you in the right direction. Remember also that you are indebted to life until you help some less fortunate person, just as you were helped.” To sum up Bill Gates has positively affected Americas society

Bill Gates Early Childhood
Bill Gates parents met in college while attending class for their future careers. His father was William H. and his mother Mary Maxwell. She was a student at the University of Washington along with her future husband. William was a law student and went on to earn a bachelors and the master's degree. She was involved in a group that would better the climate and community of their school. Bill was raised in a competitive family with two other siblings. His older sister Kristianne Gates and his younger sister Libby Gates. Bill would organize family game nights and competitions between him and his siblings. Him and his family would also play board games and compete. Bill gates was close with his whole family but mostly his mother. She was first teaching and then quit to raise her children this made him and his mom closer. His mom volunteered her free time to charities and served on corporate boards. She would take Bill to the places that she volunteered at. They would spend a lot of time together making Bill cling to his mother the most.
Early Adulthood
Bill Gates was an intellectual young man as college boards saw this along with Lakeside school. This is where he attended high school. On his SAT test he scored a 1590 out of 1600. Achieving such a high score Bill Gates decided to attend college. In 1973 h .///e went to Hartford University. While he was good with computers, he first wanted to have a career in law just like his father. However within two years of attending college bill dropped out. The year is now 1975 and he wanted to pursue a business career. This is where him and his partner Paul Allen came up with Microsoft. They both shared a love for computers and became great friends. These two had been partners for a while. In 1970 they decided to start a business together. They made a computer program that monitor traffic patterns. This program was called Traf-o-Data. The two were only 15 yet, made $20,000 with this program. They wanted to start a new company hence Microsoft.
Inspiration
From a young age Bill Gates love to design things. From games to computer programs. When he met his friend Paul Allen who also had a love for computers and programming they wanted to make a business. The two of them were great partners and did very well together with their first business idea. Later on they decided to develop the company Microsoft.
Building Upon Success
Building upon the success of their first company, Gates and Alan increased their profit with the company Microsoft. They had brought in 2.5 million dollars with in the first four years of business. Over the course of the next few years Bill reworked some of the coding for the company to help fix any problems that were occurring. Over the next three years staff increased along with intake. They now had up to 128 people working at the company with an intake of $16 million in the year 1981. By 1983 Microsoft had been known globally with offices in Britain and Japan.
Philanthropic Deeds
Some people may say that Bill Gates is one of the most philanthropic people out there. Billions of his dollars have be donated to these charities; ALS Association, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Children's Vaccine Program, Children with AIDS, Comic Relief, Earth Institute, Estamos.

William Henry Gates III was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington. His nickname was Trey because he was the 3rd. He is the son of William Gates Sr. and Mary Maxwell Gates. His father was a very well known lawyer. His mother worked for First Interstate BancSystem and United Way. She was on the board of directors. Gates has 2 sisters, one older and one younger. His family attended a Protestant Church regularly. His family said competition was good. They said it didn’t matter what the competition was about, a simple card game or swimming back to the dock, there is always a reward for winning and if you lost there would be a penalty. Bill liked school a lot and his favorite subject was Math. He used to get in trouble a lot in school because he was bored most of the time.
When Bill Gates was 13 he went to a private preparatory school. The school was called Lakeside. He knew his parents wanted him to be a lawyer but he loved computers. While he was at Lakeside, he wrote his 1st computer software program. The 1st program he wrote was a version of the game tic tac toe. The program made it possible for the person playing the game to play against the computer. People did not have personal computers in their homes; they were only used for business purposes. The students only had a certain amount of time on the computer. The schools had to pay for time. Gates and his friends were banned from the computer because they hacked into it to get extra time. Gates and his friends made a deal with the school in order to get time back they would search the computer software for bugs and the school let them back on the computer. While Bill was in high school he and his 3 other Lakeside friends wrote a payroll program for a company and in return the boys got computer time. The school administrators became aware of Bill’s abilities and asked him to build software to make the students schedules for their classes. Gates arranged the computer-scheduling program so that he would have classes with girls that he had an interest in. At the age if 17 Gates and his friend Allen created a program called Traf-O-Data. Traf-O-Data was a program that helped track traffic patterns in Seattle.
Gates graduated Lakeside in 1973. He graduated as a National Merit Scholar and had almost a perfect score on his Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). After high school he went to Harvard as a pre law student but he also took mathematics and computer science classes. Bill stayed friends with Paul Allen, his friend from Lakeside. In 1974, Altair came out with a personal computer. Bill and Paul called the president of Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS) and said that they could write a BASIC computer program for their computers. The truth was, they did not even have an Altair computer but wanted to see if the president was interested in their offer. Gates and Allen wrote the program in a couple of weeks. They met with Altair and the program that they wrote worked exactly as planned the very 1st time. Gates became friends with a guy named Steve Ballmer while he was at Harvard. Gates took a leave of absence from Harvard after his 2nd year. Ballmer stayed and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
In 1975 Allen got a job with MITS in Albuquerque. Gates dropped out of Harvard, to work with Allen. The two named their partnership micro-soft. This was a combination of microcomputer from Altair and software from the programs that they wrote. November 26, 1976 they trademarked the name Microsoft and made it one name.
In 1980 IBM met with Microsoft to ask them to write an operating system for their new, not yet released personal computer, called IBM-PC. Microsoft came up with an operating system called MS-DOS. They sold the operating system to IBM for $50,000.00. Microsoft kept the copy write because he did not want other people to reproduce it. Microsoft sold copies to other computer companies making them a large competitor. In 1981, Gates was named the president of Microsoft and also became the board chairman.
Microsoft introduced its 1st version of windows on November 20, 1985. A lot of computer people compared it to Apple. The war began and Microsoft won because Windows was able to run on many operating systems where Apple only was able to run on Apple products. Microsoft Windows was run on over 90% of personal computers around the world. Gates kept growing Windows, inventing Windows for office work. He developed Microsoft Office and Excel.
Gates became the richest man in the world when he took Microsoft to the public. In 1986, the company’s stock was worth $520 million. Gates owned 45% of the stock himself. At one point the stock grew and was worth over 100 billion.
In 1994, Bill Gates married Melinda French. They had 3 children, 2 daughters and 1 son. In 2000, Gates and his wife formed the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This foundation is one of largest foundations in the world. Gates, himself has donated over $28 billion to charity. Bill Gates’ last day at Microsoft was on June 27, 2008 to dedicate more time to his foundation.

Bill Gates (full name: William Henry Gates III) was born on Oct. 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington, the son of William H. Gates Sr. Bill Gate's father was an attorney, and his mother, Mary Maxwell was a businesswoman as well as a bank executive who served on the University of Washington Board of Regents from 1975 to 1993. Bill Gates' first interaction with computers came while he was attending high school at the prestigious Lakeside School which is located in Seattle. A local Seattle company offered the use of its computer to the school through a Teletype link, and the young Bill Gates became intrigued by the vast amount of possibilities of the primitive computer. Gates along with fellow student and high school friend, Paul Allen, began to ditch class to work in the school's computer room. All of their time and work would soon begin to pay off. When Gates was at the age of 15, both he and Allen decided to go into business together. The two high school teens would net $20,000 with the use of Traf-O-Data, a program they developed that would measure traffic flow in the local Seattle area. It was this love for technology and the endless possibilities that would determine his future and seal Bill Gates' destiny for would come next.
College Years
Gates enrolled at Harvard University in the fall of 1973, originally thinking about pursuing a career in law. But in his freshman year Bill reluctantly chose to spend more time in the computer lab than in class. Gates did not really have a usual study routine. Instead, he decided that he could get by on only minimal hours of sleep, cram for a test, and usually pass with a decent enough grade. Besides spending most of his time in the computer lab Bill would usually prefer to play video games and dabble with poker rather than go to class. Within the two years Gates was at Harvard, he dropped out of college in 1975 in order to pursue his soon to be iconic and successful business, Microsoft, with partner and long time friend Paul Allen.
Early Beginnings of Microsoft
In December of 1974, Paul Allen, who was attending Washington State University at this time, showed Gates a magazine called Popular Electronics which featured an article about the world's first microcomputer, the Altair 8800. Seeing this as a possible opportunity, Gates and Allen contacted the manufacturer of the Altair, MITS, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They told the president of the company, Ed Roberts, that they had been working on a version of the computer language known as BASIC, which was very popular at the time, for the Altair. When Ed said that he would like to see it, Gates and Allen, who in reality, actually hadn't written anything, began work on the software every day and night in Harvard's computer lab. Due to the fact that they did not have an Altair to work with, they were forced to adapt and simulate it on other computers. When Allen traveled to Albuquerque to test the program out on the Altair, neither he nor Gates were confident that it would run. But to their satisfaction it ran. Gates would soon drop out of Harvard University and move with Allen to Albuquerque, New Mexico where the establishment of Microsoft began. Unfortunately, MITS collapsed shortly thereafter, but luckily Gates and Allen were already working on writing computerized software for other computer start-up businesses including Commodore, Apple and Tandy Corp.
The name Micro-soft is a combination of “micro-computer” and “software”. They would drop the hyphen within the year of the companies conception making it how we see the company Microsoft today. The founding of Microsoft was the very first major accomplishment of Bill Gates' life but that major success did not come without hardships along the way. In the early stages of Microsoft not all was smooth as it should have been. While the BASIC software program for the Altair computer was netting the company a fee as well as royalties, it was not meeting their overall profit. According to Gates', only about 10 percent of the consumers that were using BASIC in the Altair computer had actually paid for it. Microsoft's BASIC software was mostly popular with casual computer hobbyists, who obtained the pre-market copies. They would then start reproducing and distributing those copies for no charge at all. At this time, most of the computer enthusiasts were not in it for the profits. The consumers felt that the ease of reproduction and distribution would allow them to share the software with their friends and also fellow computer enthusiasts. However, Gates thought about it differently. He saw that the free distribution of software was a form stealing, especially when the whole point of the software that was created was meant to be sold for profit.
After some legal battles ensued the two co-founders of Microsoft moved to Seattle, Washington in 1979. It would be there that Microsoft would take off and grow exponentially. As the computer industry began to grow and expand, with companies like Apple, Intel and IBM developing hardware and components, Bill was continuously moving around touting the merits of Microsoft's software applications. He often took his mother with him as after all she was a business woman. Mary was highly renowned and respected for her service. She was also very well connected with her membership on several corporate boards, including IBM. It was through Mary that Bill Gates would fatefully meet the CEO of IBM. In November 1980, IBM was searching for software that would be able to operate their upcoming personal computer (PC) and approached Microsoft. While Gates did look very young at this time, he quickly impressed IBM, convincing them that both he and his company could meet and exceed their needs. There was only one problem, and it was that Microsoft had not developed the compatible operating system that could run IBM's new computers. However, not to be denied, Gates bought an operating system that was developed and meant to run on computers similar to IBM's. Gates successfully made a deal with the software's developer, making Microsoft the exclusive licensing agent and later full owner of the software but not telling them of the IBM deal. The company later sued Microsoft and Gates for withholding important information. Microsoft settled out of court for an undisclosed amount, but neither Gates nor Microsoft admitted to any wrongdoing.

Bill Gates, the retired CEO of Microsoft, made a long lasting impact on society due to is works in Microsoft and also the works of his foundation called, “The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation”.Bill Gates works to change the lives of everyone in the United States
one way or another. A article from The Telegraph Online states, ¨The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation aims to improve the lives of the world’s poorest”( Nick Allen). This quote shows their main goal of their foundation and what they hope to do to achieve it. Bill Gates cares about the less fortunate people and is taking action to make their lives easier. He is making moves to help many that are very much in need of it.
BIll Gates is very dedicated to making a change in this society. In a article from The Telegraph Online it states, “Bill Gates has actually given up his role of Chairman and CEO of Microsoft so he can focus all his attention, time, and effort towards his foundation and its’ goals (The Telegraph Online).” Bill Gates is willing to quit his company that he worked from the bottom, just to help for a better society. This man is willing to leave his all-time desired job just to focus harder on making the world better, he’s putting others before himself which is an amazing thing to do. A job that he grew from nothing is not worth the amount of positive things he could do focusing on his foundation. Bill Gates is very dedicated to making a change in the world one way or another.
Bill Gates had also given the American people what they had wanted for a very long time. He had revolutionized the Windows industry by creating the Windows 95, a long-awaited version of the Windows software that was asked of for a very long time. Mr. Gates was willing to hear out the audience and windows users and put his efforts and time into making a windows update that would change the game forever (Wired). Bill Gates made a system that could help many work at home and a software that could do many things no other normal software could do before. Bill Gates helps out America by making a software that many wanted and benefited the people tremendously.
Mr. Gates is also working towards the ending of the Polio virus. Polio is a virus that destroys the nerve cells in the spinal cord which may cause muscle wasting and/or paralysis. Bill Gates said in The Telegraph Online, “They’re putting millions and millions into finding a vaccination that could end Polio for good. He says once you eradicate it you don’t have to spend more money on it, and it’s just a gift for the rest of time (The Telegraph Online).” He always wanted to eradicate this virus known as Polio, and now that he has the resources to do it he’s devoted to the ending of this virus, and it’s like a gift for the rest of time because there will no longer be anyone with it. Bill also said that he’s seeing the child death rates revolutionize like the PC and internet revolutionized before.
Bill Gates is putting in lots of time and resources to seeing his goals succeed and society become a healthier place. Bill Gates is putting millions of dollars into condom industry to increase of pleasurability and of condoms. He’s doing this in hopes that they’d be used more in society and that less STDs would be spread which would overall lead to a healthier society. At least 23,000 Americans die each year to STDs and 2 million become infected with STDs making it very common and dangerous within the US. Bill Gates is trying to help us by donating to unique causes that will actually help us in the long run. Bill Gates is also helping out the condom industry by making it more pleasurable which would increase the sales of condoms hence increasing the economy and their own sales. The annual production of condoms is 15 billion units with there only being 750 million because of the lack of pleasurability. Bill Gates is helping users be safe and also making the happyfuntimes even happier and more fun. Bill Gates once stated, “The one major drawback to more universal use of male condoms is the lack of perceived incentive for consistent use. The primary drawback from the male perspective is that condoms decrease pleasure as compared to no condom, creating a trade-off that many man find unacceptable. If they were more pleasurable and used, then fewer STDs would spread leading to a healthier society“ (The Telegraph Online). This basically sums it up, Bill Gates has hopes for a better society and he’s going to start doing that by investing in protection.
Mr. Gates cares for the youth and future of the education system by educating unknown people of the problems in today’s schooling system. Gates after his success with Microsoft, is working to make the education system better by dedicating his time to making the teachers better (Weekend Edition Saturday). He believes that this will make the education system better because they’re the ones that are going to be teaching our youth what they need to know to be successful in life. If we make the teachers better than the students will have better knowledge hence being smarter. Another problem Bill Gates sees is within the tests and quizzes that teachers give out. Gates stated that these assessments don’t tell which parts of the practice they have to focus on, and that the students feedback and evaluation helps a lot more. Many schools don’t see this which is why there education system may be broken and going downhill.
Yet another problem with the school system that Bill Gates shared was that many classes have environments and teachers that don’t encourage you to learn (Weekend Edition Saturday). This doesn’t motivate the kids to learn and they aren’t going to if they feel that they don’t need or want to, which would in the end make their grades lower and lessen their knowledge in that specific topic or all topics actually. He also stated that many teachers don’t teach/do things that would spark a kindle of fire in the students mind (Weekend Edition Saturday) .Many teachers don’t do things that make them enjoy learning and want to enhance their level of knowledge, so they have basic or lesser than basic knowledge making schools, teachers, and the students themselves bad. Bill Gates cares for the future of the students and the education systems in America and he is taking a stand.
Bill Gates is caring individual who is helping to support farming families in America. An article from PR Newswire stated, “ Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, today told a group of political, business, and development leaders that supporting farming families in developing countries is critical to overcoming poverty and hunger (PR Newswire).” Bill Gates is actually taking charge to help those poor farming families who struggle to make a living because they are very important to our society and they need support. Bill Gates had also called other countries and the US’s attention to support these poor families who are supplying the US food (PR Newswire). Many of these farmers don’t have very “loud” and well known and reputable voices unlike Bill Gates who is will known and can get things done with ease.
Bill Gates is trying to stop hunger and poverty in poor families by trying to get support from many to solve this problem. In an article from PR Newswire, Gates stated “ three-quarters of the world's poorest people rely on small plots of land for their food and income. Helping these small farmers grow and sell more so they can become self-sufficient is the most effective way to reduce hunger and poverty.” Bill Gates is caring for many families that are suffer to make it through life day by day and he’s taking a stand trying to help these farms become self-sufficient in hopes that it will reduce hunger and poverty in America. The Gates foundation has donated $1.7 billion dollars to agricultural development in hopes that there is progress being made against poverty, hunger, and that it’s sustainable for the economy and environment. Another article from PR Newswire stated, “An example of foundation-funded projects that have promising results is, “The World Food Program's Purchase for Progress (P4P) project is helping small farmers, particularly women, gain access to reliable markets and the opportunity to sell their surplus at competitive prices. Since its start less than three years ago, P4P has paid out an estimated $37 million to small farmers and traders.” This is showing that there are actual results and that if Gates is getting more support for his ideas that many more great things will happen and that society will become a better place to live in and be apart of. Yet another article from PR Newswire states, “Gates said farming is a business that helps poor farmers build self-sufficiency and improve their lives. He explained how the foundation and its partners are focusing their efforts on helping farmers get better seeds, healthier soils, and access to markets, as well as supporting better data and policies.” So not only is Gates trying to give them more money so they can be self-sufficient, but he’s actually trying to get them better equipment and seeds etc. so then crops will be better and that benefits everyone in the long especially the farmers who are in need of it. Bill Gates cares for the population of those who are in need of general necessities and is standing up so they will be heard.
Bill Gates is also trying to change the energy that people are using so then it would benefit companies and the people. An article from Wired, Gates states, “ ‘If you gave me the choice between picking the next 10 presidents or ensuring that energy is environmentally friendly and a quarter as costly, I'd pick the energy thing,’ " This shows that he cares for the energy of the people and how he can make it better, rather than him being able to pick the next presidents that he wants. This a big thing for Gates because he put everyone else's energy over his own decision to vote and that’s a bold thing to stay because it shows his own will and desire to help the citizens of America with their major energy problem. Another article from Wired states, “ ‘If you're using first-class land for biofuels, then you're competing with the growing of food. And so you're actually spiking food prices by moving energy production into agriculture. For rich people, this is OK. For poor people, this is a real problem, because their food budget is an extremely high percentage of their income. As we're pushing these things, poor people are driven from having adequate food to not having adequate food’(Bill Gates)”. Bill Gates is raising awareness that we have a problem on our hands and that problem is that energy is causing a food crisis. He speaks for the poor because they’re having problems with energy from biofuels because it spikes the food price hence making the poor unable to buy more food with the little amount of money they have. Bill Gates is an amazing man and is changing America for the better due to his ideas and support to problems that are affecting many lower class civilians.
Bill Gates is a very good man who continues to provide for America in many ways. Although he is still doing great things, he seems to continue to have an impact on many of the youth. Bill Gates inspired many youth in the field of Computer Programming and led to the creation of 1000 scholarships to minor. These scholars could do something great and potentially change America just like himself (Bill Gates Biography). Bill Gates is inspiring these kids to continue on a career path similar to his, and hopefully they will do great things and change the world. These kids have great potential and have the resources and time to achieve the goals they set on this specific career. Gates gave this career popularity and it showed many people the opportunities that the career offers. Gates once said, “If you are born poor, it’s not your mistake, but if you die poor its your mistake (Cris Nikolov).” He’s motivating people to not think of where you are but where you can go and that’s a big thing. Many people think they’re stuck and they can’t improve their life, stance in society, or wealth, but you can’t be stuck in that mindset or it will mess you up and stunt your growth. Bill Gates is trying to help many out not just physically but mentally. Gates is helping change America for the better in every way he possibly can.
Bill Gates has created a long lasting impact on the society we know today and is continuing to do so. He is trying to eradicate diseases that have killed many, assist those who are desperately in need of supplies etc., and trying to make life easier for the poor. Gates founded a foundation to help many communities and people thrive, in hopes that society will be a better place to live and raise a family. Bill Gates is a great man who has done a lot for america and isn’t stopping anytime soon. Mr. Gates is a businessman who is making his business helping out America and those inside it!

Compare and Contrast Cats and Dogs
There are several similarities that cats and dogs share, but at the same time they are very different. These two animals are two of the most popular pets today. Some people prefer the company of a cat, while others are considered dog lovers. Through the various aspects of each animal, I look at the similarities and differences each one holds, and then I can get a good insight as to why these animals are so loved. First, I would want to discuss the similarities that these two creatures share. One of the most obvious similarities between these two animals is that they both have hair. They are also domesticated animals kept as pets. They require love and affection from their owner, and can show love and affection if you show it towards them. Another thing is that when you pet them, not only does it relieve stress, it gets dog or cat hair everywhere. They both give birth to multiple offspring at one time, which must be very hard on the mother.
The other difference between these two animals is that they don't have any kind of communication with each other and they don't communicate with each other in a way that makes them seem like humans. Dogs have been proven helpful animal compared to cats; many different research sources has reveal that when children are exposed to dog dust and early age, their risk of developing allergies or asthma significantly reduces compared to when children are exposed to cats. Health wise, dogs, have several benefits compared to cats, dogs are the most loyal creatures, and they are energetic, smart, playful and very active animal.
On the other hand, cats are lazy and destructive animal, which sometimes can be annoying, especially when they bring dead animals in the house that is why dogs are better. Cats are also more aggressive than dogs, so it is important to keep your pet safe from these dangerous creatures. Pets are not only a great source of entertainment for humans but also for pets. Dogs are able to communicate with people easily, and they don't have to worry about their owners' safety. Cats are also very intelligent and capable of learning new things.

My Opinion on Dogs Vs Cats
Which do you like better cats or dogs. Most people like dogs for many different reasons. But sorry dog lovers I perver cats. This is my opinion about why I like cats better. Starting now!
Cats better for a lot of reasons. Most of them won't be there cute, there fluffy and you can hug them. Almost all my reasons are actually good. Also I've had a cat so I know what it's like to have cat. 6 cats, thats how many I've had/have. My first cat name is Sirsy. My family found her almost dead. But she's scared of most people because she got taken away from her mom too early. Sirsy is still alive though. The next cat is named Sasha. She's a pretty chill cat. But she died this summer. That's why I hate when the name Sasha in in a book or something like that. Laya is the third one. She was skinny at first but then she ate all the food! She has a can of cat food every day. She died this summer to. This is my saying for her. "A can of cat food everyday keeps the catnip away."
The fourth cat is, Hera. We did not have her for long. Only because she wasn't playful. So I can only say a few things. When you would pick her up she would put her paw on your shouler. If Hera did not get what she wanted, she would go sulk in a corner. That's pretty much, how much I know about her so yea. Meow,meow,meow! Freya, my pretty little kitty. She's the cat I have right now. She's playful and nudges you to pet her. She's cute and fluffy. I had another cat but it was like when I was two.
1. Some cats interact with you, not all though. All cats are either scared or really playful. They like to play with toys, stings, and any other random thing they can find. If you can get a cats to play with you. They might be really fun. 2. Dogs save people also cats can to. There are a lot of known cats that saved millions of lives. 3. This might sound random but most cats purr really loud. If your cat purrs loud it might calm you down. 4. Did you know a cat might come to you if you are crying. I honestly don't know why they do this but you should look it up. A lot of people might be suffering from depression or sadness. A cat or a furry friend might cheer you up. Dogs just wimper, wimper, wimper it's sort of annoying. 5. The last reason why is, most cats really want an owner. But most people say that cats are cruel well they help people too. The only time they would attack you is they're ether bothered or defending themselves. So that's your fault if a cat attacks you!
Lastly cats are better. Cats can do all the things dogs do and more. It's ok to have you opinion im just stating mine. Here are some types of cats.

Introducing Cats to Dogs
Make sure you have a safe space for your cat that your dog cannot access. Move all essentials here (food, water, litter tray). Use a stair gate, so that the dog cannot access the cats area. Make sure you have enough high spaces for your cat to get to if they get worried or scared.
Never underestimate the importance of smell to dogs and cats, you can introduce their individual scent even before the other pet comes home. Technology, mainly cell phones, are responsible for a lot of distraction in the classroom. We would rather be on our phones playing games or checking SnapChat than learning how to diagram a sentence. Students that spend more time on their phones rather than paying attention will make lower test grades. Some students even use their phones while trying to do homework. The distraction may not cause them to fail but it will hinder their ability to make higher grades. An even bigger issue is that the people around them may be distracted by their phone use. Which means students aren’t only affecting their classroom performance, but the performance of their friends. As a whole, classes would be better if cell phone use was limited to a minimum and only used in school appropriate ways.
We live in a world where more people talk through texting and social media than face to face. Before social media was so popular, kids would hang out after school talking and interacting with each other in person. Social skills are an important part of growing up. When we rely on social media to make friends we don’t use basic social skills, skills we will need when we get a job. In reality, most of the “friends” you meet online aren’t true friends. Social media and online games is a way to escape what is really going on in life. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing; it is bad when people become unhappy with their real lives. They want their lives to be what they see, the big problem with that is that posts on media may not be true. In the same way, we want our posts to be reality, the we only post the parts of our lives that look good to others. In general social media is made up with what could possibly be complete lies, but that is all people care about instead of living in the moment.
Technology in the classroom isn’t all bad, it can be very helpful, but only if it used properly. In the classroom phones or tablets are used for research. Having apps that are school related can be helpful, especially when it comes to homework. Parents and students can stay connected with assignments and grades through educational apps. Students are not always honest about why they are on their phones. If asked why we are on our phones we can simply say that we are checking grades when we are actually on instagram or playing a game. Therefore, even though it can be helpful if it is not properly monitored it can do more harm than good.
Cell phones definitely have their place in the educational world, but they are greatly overused. Phones can cause distractions for everybody in the classroom. It affects test scores and students ability to succeed at school. There need to be stronger guidelines on phone usage to prevent them from being a distraction.

Theme of Creation and Evolution
Maybe the most argued topic in science throughout the years is how did life and earth come to be. The two sides argue did the life come to be through the creation of a man named Jesus. Or did it happen through the evolving of an atom. I kind of believe in both, but I take more on the side of creationism. Also, I believe in some of evolution like microevolution, and microevolution is same things happening rather that big things like a human coming form an ape. I believe in the living things adapting to their surroundings. I don't totally believe in creationism, but I still side with creationism. There are some things that I believe in evolution.
As I said before I take both sides, but I lean towards creationism. One of the reasons I side with creationism is because of Genesis chapter 9. For those who do not know in the chapter the great flood happens, then Noah must build the ark to save the animals and others. Then Ken Ham a creationist expert says that water froze and then came the Ice Age. I agree with him, because he is a professional and I would hope he knows what he is saying. Another thing that was brought up in the debate between Bill Nye and Ken Ham, it was Ken asking Bill how do you measure how old ice is. Bill said when they measure it, they count the layers. Then though they must guess how old each layer of ice is. I don’t know how much I want to trust them guessing how old things are. We have souls I don’t care what others say. Everybody feels emotion, like when your find out a close family member passes away, I bet you will be crushed. You're not just going to be like “oh someone died whatever.” You're going to mourn with your family and be sad with them. When you die your soul is going to go to heaven, another example that you are going to heaven is the book The Boy Who Went to Heaven and Came Back. This book is about a 5-year-old boy who had a near death experience and went to heaven and came back.
Now, why I kind of think that evolution is real. First, we are related to almost everything somehow. For example, we get our cytoplasm from plants. We are also almost exactly like ape we have DNA strands that very close to being the same, and some that are the same. It makes sense that we are close to apes since we came from them. Also, some scientists think that we came from sea animals and we use to have gills to breath underwater. Then again from the video Bill said that there are pyramids recorded to be older than the earth as well as some trees. Also, Bill said that the meaning of life for humans is to reproduce and make things better. And once you die you just go straight back to the earth and erode.
Finally, I believe in both but mainly in creationism the part of evolution that I believe in is microevolution. Like for creationism I believe in that we were made by God. And the great flood that caused the Ice Age. Also, that it is hard to count the layers of ice over that many years, then they guess on how old the ice layers are. And I don’t really believe that we came from apes or sea creatures. One of the main forms of microevolution is animals or humans adapting to their surroundings. For example, birds will get bigger beaks in certain areas so they can eat. Birds get bigger and stronger beaks to eat seeds and carry stuff for their nest. Sparrows have gotten bigger in genral, in the north they are bigger to survive the cold temps and places like California they are small because it is not as cold.
To conclude, I believe in both creationism and evolution. I take more of a side to creationism, but I believe in some of evolution. Like micro evolution and animals and humans adapting I am a big believer in.

My Opinion about Creation
How did it all begin? How did every living thing come into existence? These are just two of the many questions that come to mind when thinking about where it all came from. A person has one of two primary thoughts on how everything began. They either believe in evolution or they believe in creation. I am one of those people who strongly believe in creation. Creation is the believing that the universe had a beginning and came into existence supernaturally through a being known as God. Even though all people have access to the same information, there remain differences in the two beliefs. The reason for this is in the way people interpret the information. In my opinion, there are three strong pieces of evidence that support the creation theory. They are the Bible, the existence of living and intelligent designs and the Earth.
The first piece of evidence provided is the Bible. The Bible is the foundation of the Christian beliefs that share detailed teachings of creation. The Bible is made up of a series of books. In the very first book, called Genesis it very clearly states that God created all things. In addition, it states the order in which he created them included humans and living creatures. Both the living creatures and the human body have many similar features and organs to make them function. For example, these living bodies have a head, a body, and very complex internal organ systems that help them survive and thrive. Many people believe these similarities came from a common descent, but as we know from the Bible God created all of us to be on this universe. These similarities suggest that there was one creator, one designer in which his work is evident throughout all things (Evidence for Creation).
After reading the Book of Genesis, it is clear there was a God involved to create the heavens and the earth. The astonishing part is really the timing of it all. Knowing that God created all things to exist in the universe is one thing. However, it is truly another level of complexity when you think about the timing involved. If the order of events were to have been out of place, disruption and chaos would have occurred. The animals needed plants and grasses to eat and they also needed other mammals to help protect them and keep them alive. This is what is called the circle of life. This is crucial to the way nature and creatures rely on each other to take and to give and to coexist. This universe can’t be created by one single atom based on how complex this world was created. It had to be created by a person who is very intelligent and knows what he is doing; God (Religions - Christianity: Creationism and Intelligent Design) (Lezard).
Another strong piece of evidence to support creation is the earth itself. The earth is not only filled with many living creatures, it too is complex in design. The earth is rotating. The earth’s tilt and axis provide for us more than just the sun, moon and stars. This rotation is a about providing sunshine and rain for things to grow so creatures can eat. The nighttime provides us darkness and gives us more than just rest. This is also a special time for some animals to hunt and to move towards new living areas. In addition to the rotation, is the mystery of ageing. Fossils as far back as the dinosaur age have found to be similar in design to the human body and living creatures of modern times. The basics of their way of life remain constant which is living off the land and using a mouth to eat and eyes to see. These are examples of a single creators work throughout all of history. Below the earth’s surface lives another key piece of evidence to support creation which is the diamonds and minerals. These minerals were fundamental in providing a source of energy, of health and of existence in the most primitive of times. The divine creator knew what he was doing as part of his grand master plan because their creation had meaning and purpose (Heaton, Timothy, and Matthew Rognstad) (Rutherford).
The universe has come into existence from an intelligent and intentional being known as God the Father. This almighty creator gave us the heavens, the earths and all creatures great and small. Even if you are not a religious person, there are other pieces of evidence like the earth and the coming of age that are undeniable the works of someone greater. The similarities and timing in his design are pure genius and without mistake. Creation exists because of a greater power and for me there is no other possibility.

Creation vs. Evolution has been an argument going on for a long time, and no one knows a definite answer. I believe in the theory of Evolution, why? Simply because all sciences rely on indirect evidence. The problem with using “theory” in the certain situation, instead of an idea, scientists use to as an explanation of data to prove the truth. The process of finding out evolution takes a lot of time, but scientist rely on the fossil records, common structures, and the distribution of species, and many more ways.
In 1799 an engineer by the name William Smith reported that, fossils were found in a definite forming order, with more modern ones closer to the top. Logically, the bottom layers were laid down earlier, and older than the top layers. Later, in the 1830s his discoveries were confirmed and continued by the paleontologist William Lonsdale. Today, thousands of ancient rock deposits have been found that show the same fossil organisms. Before Darwin, the paleontologists and geologists used the sequence of fossils in rocks not as proof, but as a base for understanding the original sequence of rock. Paleontologists use methods like radiometric dating (measuring the amount of natural radioactive atoms) making it possible to estimate when the rocks and fossils within, were formed. First, the Archaeopteryx was found in Germany in 1861. It’s combination of traits is between non- avian dinosaurs and birds, that clearly places it as a transitional.
It has a long-feathered tail and small teeth like a non- avian dinosaur, but it also has flight feathers and wings, just like a modern bird. The “wish bone” and the collarbone in the Archaeopteryx confirmed the relation between birds and dinosaurs, because they are the only two groups that has those features. Also, scientists believe that whales once walked on land. Fossil evidence from the Pakicetids show that the earliest relatives of whales were small land mammals. The Pakicetid was found in Pakistan and lived about 50 years ago (Eocene). A whale and the Pakicetid are linked through its unique inner ear shape. Whales are the only animal known to have such an enhanced region of the ear (auditory bulla). Some other fossil whale relatives that were likely amphibious on land and sea were the Ambulocetid (short limbs and large feet) and Redingotes (lived in fresh water). Scientists also believe that the Batillariids lived 40 million years ago and the first known aquatic whale that made their permanent transition to the ocean.
Scientists also use common structures as a base to find out about evolution. Paleontologists use comparative anatomy to understand common descent. The anatomy of humans, mice, and bats are surprisingly very similar, even though they have very different ways of life and different environments. The connection of the animals can be observed in every part of the body. They can all be very similar; yet a person writes, a mouse runs, and bats fly. These three animals have structures that are built of bones that are different in detail but similar general structure and relation to each other, scientists call this homology structures. Homologies have been concluded that they are best explained by common descent. Scientists, usually anatomists investigate homologies not only in bone structures, but other parts of the body.
Conclusions from anatomists give inferences about evolution, and inferences about comparisons with the sequence of ancestry, that can be tested in the forms of paleontological records (mainly focusing on the record of the past life through evidence in rocks). Also, the ear and jaw of a mammal are parts of the body paleontologist and comparative anatomists to show common descent through transition. The lower jaw of any mammal contains only one bone, and reptiles have several. The reptile jaw is also homologous with bones discovered in a mammal's ear. A therapsid, is a mammal- like reptiles that was discovered by paleontologists. The jaw of a therapsid consist of a double jaw joint, one with bones that is in a mammal's jaw, the other one with bone that over time became a hammer and anvil of a mammal's ear. Comparative anatomy also explains why a lot of structures from organisms are not perfect. An organism is not perfectly adapted because they are modified from inherited structures already. The fact that structures cannot be perfect is evidence for evolution.
Biogeography gives evidence for decent from common ancestors. Today there is about 250,000 species of plants, 100,000 species of fungi, and one million species of animals, and every single organism has its own environment, and ways of living, and we are nowhere close to discovering every organism that exists. Certain organisms, in this case, humans and dogs can adapt and survive in a wide range of environments. On the other hand, some are so specialized and limited, for example; fungi. Laboulbenia is a type of fungus that grows on the back of a single beetle found only in the caves of southern France. Another example, a certain larva from a fly can only grow in specific grooves beneath the third oral appendages of a land crab, that is only located in the Caribbean islands. Present, living species and local fossils are being tested to see whether their structures are similar or not.
Once again, evolution is not a fact and yet has to be proved but is a theory that has multiple ways that scientist, anatomist, and paleontologists have discovered very accurate evidence behind it. Fossil records, distribution of species, and common structures are some of the evidence that have been looked through and proved over a long period of time. I truly believe that evolution will one day be proved by definite facts.
