Analysis of the Play a Raisin in the Sun by Laurence Hansberry

Being poor in a country sets an individual's life up to be filled with the longing for a better life. That desire can lead to the destruction of one's family or goals. It can cause strain on an individual's minds. Throughout the play, A Raisin in the Sun published in 1959, Lorraine Hansberry, illustrates the mental and social issues that are placed on a society who has suffers from poverty and is still affected in today's contemporary culture. During the time period the play was written poverty was at an all-time high among the African American community. From racism, Jim Crow (Urofsky,2018) laws and to the failing economy of the United States are all contributions to the daily struggles African American families had to endure and continue to endure. Hansberry took years of confusion and mistreatment and put it into her play.

The play is simply about an African American family who is a part of the lower class receiving a large amount of money. (Hansberry.p29) After the death of her husband the matriarch of the family Lena younger must make the decision of what she must do with the money. Her wish is to buy a home with a backyard for her family as she and her late husband had promised. Her son Walter Younger, obsessed with making fast money and wanting to be rich wished to invest the money into a liquor store.(Hansberry.p36) His sister, Beneatha the only one with an education wishes for the money to be used for her own wellbeing and to pay for her medical school. The family is to receive $10,000. Just the mention of it brings tension amongst the family because they all want a piece of it. Those affected by poverty could never dream about receiving that amount. The anxiety of waiting for the money to come and what to do with it can really stress an individual out. Rising out of poverty usually takes time. But to this family this one check is the answer to all their individual prayers.

In the 1950's segregation was still very alive and present in the United States of America. African Americans were limited to the jobs they could have and dreamed that their children could have better lives, better education and better opportunities. Blacks had to work extremely hard to make ends meet. They worked multiple jobs with long hours just too still receive the short end of the stick. Working hard and still not being able to provide is enough to make a man depressed. Although he had his mother, Walter was supposed to be the patriarch of the family. There has always been unaddressed pressure put on black men in the black community. They are taught to provide and protect their family. No matter how, it should be him saving his family from poverty. These are thoughts that run through Walters head every day. To him, Walter is not fulfilling his life purpose. He does not feel fit to be a father and husband. Yet, he is still a prideful man. He puts on a show for his family, so they won't look down on him. When asked for fifty cents from his son, he gives the boy an entire dollar which he could not afford.(Hansberry,p34) He wants his son to look up to him and to be proud of him, but he must face reality. His family is poor, and he is a chauffeur barely making enough money.

The psychological impact on black men who haven't been able to overcome the reality of the labor market is a story that is seldom told. Many are suffering from broken dreams and delusions of grandeur that have not been fulfilled. An argument can be made that many Black men have been suffering from a secret depression for years as a result of this financial crunch. A great deal of it probably has its roots in an economic struggle. The odds were always against them. By the end of the 1940's most policy decisions were used to enforce African Americans to stay in inner cities or the ghetto. Many were limited to factory, city work and chauffeur jobs. Although slavery was over, blacks were forced to work jobs that pretty much had them as servants to white people. Jobs like housekeeping, drivers and carpenters. In present time, African Americans make jokes about the popular film Driving Miss Daisy, but unlike the movie a beautiful friendship was not the end result for a lot of African Americans who had no choice but to drive their white employers around. This was the reality and they white person in the back seat was not always kind. Being forced to drive around someone apart of the race that doesn't even believe you deserve rights can take a toll on a person's mind. A black man already has a lot of pressure on him. The last thing he wants to do is drive around with upper class folks who couldn't care less about him. Walter was fighting depression and obsession. His need for a better lifestyle puts a wedge between his and his wife marriage. When his mother announced what she did with some of the money his depression increased. He stopped going to work and began to drink even more. One would think he would be happy that his family was moving into a nicer home for his son to grow up in. Walter could not find happiness in the decision because it was not a decision, he made nor contributed to. He felt useless as the man of the house. He was not the savior of his family.

Many men have not been told how to process and talk about their emotional experiences, furthering a sense of isolation, anger, and resentment. For these men, this creates an emotional volatility that can sometimes manifest in seeming shut down in relationships and friendships. At its worst, this budding resentment can manifest in outward expression of anger, aggression, and even violence. Many men struggle with the idea of being openly vulnerable and sharing their emotions. And for those who grew up as sensitive boys, they are often subject to ridicule and shaming for what are natural and healthy expressions of emotion. Black men face a unique challenge in that most of what is most prized about them may be their looks or bodies, but rarely ever their intellect and emotional intelligence. In present time these feelings can turn into an obsession of getting rich. To a lot of black men, getting rich will solve all their problems. Poverty and racism are why they are unhappy. They can't change racism overnight. Especially in the standing of the country today, so why not get rich. Trying to get rich overnight just added more stress to the black man. It takes time, or sometimes it does not. Walter wanted to invest into a liquor store.

The prohibition was over, but it still did not fit with his mother's Christian values. Black men in today's society are obsessed with getting out of the hood/ghetto turned to four things to achieve that. Those things are sports, music, crime, and education. Growing up black men are faced with an option of joining a sports team. The moment they show actual interest or talent an obsession begins. This is how he is supposed to make it in the world. Don't give up this is your ticket out the hood. Don't let your parents down. Move your family out the hood when you make it. The sad reality is that young black boys are told these things and much more daily basis. Luckily in today's society there has been an increase in black men pursuing doctorate degrees and becoming extremely educated. While some ways black men achieved making it out the hood have been legal. Some chose the illegal route. Thirty eight percent of a state's population are black males who are incarcerated. The chargers vary from theft, arson, drugs and murder. For the men who don't receive life sentences and who serve their time always claim that they were young, dumb and trying to make a quick buck. These are the psychological issues that poverty has caused throughout black men.

For those who chose different routes for their lives it was nothing about happiness for their families. It is an unwritten rule in the black community that when a black man comes into a lot of money the first thing, he does is buys his mother a house or a car. Black men are groomed to one day provide and make their families proud. Living in poverty makes it extremely hard for a man to ever feel the sensation of fulfilling his purpose. In a black man's mind there is nothing worse than letting his family down. When Walter's mother saw he needed a chance to prove to the family and most importantly himself that he can provide she pitied him. She gave him the remaining money and told him to set some aside for his sister and do as he please with the rest(Hansberry,p73). Instead Walter invests all of the money into the liquor store. His need to be done with his obsession had him acting very impulsive. His wife warned him about the company he chooses to keep around, but Walter did not care. All he saw was that giving his friend this money for the liquor store was his way out of poverty.

The world he lived in gave him no other option in the matter. He was finally happy. There were improvements in his marriage. Walter felt like he finally did something good for his family and in the future, they will be thanking him for the family's success. Unfortunately, Walter's friend ran of the money. Including the portion that was intended for his sister's education. In the beginning of the play, although poor the family felt for Walter. They understood his problems and understood he was doing his best. But at this moment his family was extremely disappointed in him. He was not their savior. He added to their problems. His sister cannot afford medical school. His mother is debating moving into the new home and his wife must make the decision of keeping their unborn child. In an old folk saying, Walter put all his eggs into one basket and they broke. Walter went from happy to an even deeper form of depression. Walter did not redeem himself in the play until he denied to sign papers that would prevent his family from moving to the new house in exchange of payment.(Lansberry,p145) This can be seen as being prideful and standing up to the white man. His family looked on proud of him and it is believed that he finally felt like the man of the family.

There are many Walters within the black community. They just want to provide for their families but because of their race they receive the short end of the stick. They are born into poor families always obsessing over wanting more. Since the end of slavery, the white man has tried to keep African Americans at the lower class of things. Now the white man has laws to back them up because they are the government. There are specific laws and regulations that are made to keep poor black people poor. When welfare was first introduced black women were the ones receiving it, but this system was the continuation of dividing the families. In order for a black woman to receive any governmental assistance for her and her children there must be no father or man around. But as seen in the play having two parents does not mean you are automatically wealthy. Children were required to attend schools closest to where they lived. Where they received little funding and teachers with low education. Walter in A Raisin in the Sun, is so important because it highlights the struggles of black fathers and husbands just trying to provide. He was poor and no matter what he did or tried it was not changing. He was seen as the antagonist of the play, but the system is the real antagonist. He was a poor black man fighting depression and obsession because of the fact that he was poor, and he wanted more.

In conclusion, Hansberry's play addressed many social issues within the African American family. It shows how hard it is to achieve a better life especially when one has a white government. The play also shows the silent struggles black men deal with while still trying to stay strong for their families. That issue is even more present in today's society. Luckily for Walter he found his redemption but that is not the case for everyone. Black men fill the prison systems and the graveyards. This is the reality of the United States. Even a black president can't stop that. Reading this play in today's society can be beneficial to those fighting their silent battles. It lets them know they are not alone and that sometimes money is not the way to make your family proud. Being like Walter and standing up for what is right is.

Racism and Adversity in Professional Baseball

Baseball is known as America's favorite pastime. Incorporating baseball to a sociological perspective, you can begin to understand how the game is viewed to function in the society in which it is played, and how society impacts the game. Northern American sports has suffered immensely from the division, labels, and stereotypes that have been encrypted on specific individuals of a certain race or ethnicity. Relating to the fact that adversity and racism are at a direct conflict within our society, 42 represents the pride and courage of a discriminated African American baseball player, who stood as a sign for racial progression in America. Both sport and race are sociologically problematic because they appear to be crucial aspects of human life that precedes our socialization.

42 was about an African American man, Jackie Robinson, who gets signed to play professional baseball under the Dodgers. The film takes place in the generation in which America was largely segregated and racism plagued the entire country. This generation was known to be during the 40s and 50s. Although this was a factor, Jackie never doubted his ability and strength, and he kept his head held high while pursuing his passion for baseball without physically fighting against racism. Jackie Robinson's strength against all racism related obstacles showed America how wrong they were in their ways. It shines a light on the national conflict of racial integration of American professional baseball. After World War II, African Americans would come home to racial segregation, inequality, discrimination, and a time where their life would be more difficult than ever in their communities. Jackie Robinson, like many other African American athletes at the time, were deprived opportunities that contributed to the equity issue in the sports world and was racially discriminated. Robinson pursued a passion of his regardless of the hatred that he got in return. He represented courage and integrity to the defeat of adversarial stereotypes on black individuals.

At the start of the movie, Jackie braves the hostility of racial prejudice on and off the field of the unspoken color line, from player and fan alike. Branch Rickey, a major league team executive with a bold idea once states, a black a man in white baseball, can you imagine the reaction (Movie 42). This quote represents the whole idea behind 42 and the reactions are simply the acceptance and disproval of those being influenced by Jackie's position in society. This hostility proves a major challenge not just for Jackie anymore, but his family. The main plot of 42 is not one single idea. From time to time, people try to treat the across nation debate about race as something with no importance, less about hatred and violence, and more about people simply not being careful with the words or pictures they use. Those who see racism in different ways are accused of practicing political correctness, which has become a pejorative term in society instead of a reminder that people should want to act correctly. The history of racism in America is full of ugliness and horror. This ugliness was practiced openly, even in the American temple that we call the ballpark. This movie shows that, not so long ago, racism was commonplace and often accepted. It took a few men to stand up to a racial coach, to stand up for Jackie, and to stand up against the racial like words that forced people to consider both the nature and cost of hate. Jackie Robinson was more eager to make a point about individual determination and the way individuals and societies can change. Robinson was a sign of racial progress in American for his braveness in the face of bitter abuse.

The idea that baseball is known as America's favorite pastime allows us to crucially investigate the nationalism of the sport. Baseball was used as a symbol of American values in World War II by promoting patriotism (Fitts,1994, p.76). Northern American sports have always been a part of a division based on the color of one's skin and this sheds an intense impact on our society. Baseball sociology is a way of viewing how the game functions in the society in which it is played, and how society impacts the game. Racism and adversity in baseball relate to sports sociology through the investigation of racial discrimination on issues of equity and opportunity to measure the degree of meritocracy in sports. Sociologists have used cultural studies, ideology in sports media text, and ethnographic methods to understand how racial identity is constructed in sports and its intersections with class, nation, gender, and sexuality. Sociological issues are throughout the entire movie, one focusing on the gender aspect. Gender roles were seen in the movie when Jackie was constantly taunted by other coaches through unfair racist remarks. According to 42, the coach justified his action with insensitivity and not wanting to treat him too soft. This could be seen as reinforcing masculinity as men are seen as masculine, and showing weakness to a black individual at the time was wrong.

Society puts this social idea in our heads of what is masculine or feminine, and what is acceptable or not. Sociologists have studied the rise and then decline of African American players in the sports world. They have analyzed racial salary differences and the longevity of a career and documented how broadcasting and management positions are primarily white. A large sociological belief shows that African Americans are minimized through placement in decentralized positions. Relating to the movie 42, Jackie Robinson was the only black player on the Dodgers baseball team and represented racial division on sports teams, and this national accomplishment promoted more African Americans to pursue what they love no matter what racial harms were to come out of it. Out of respect for their teammates, baseball players that come from all over the world, especially the Dominican Republic, undertake the learning of the lyrics for the national anthem because Americans hold great value for the nation's symbols of the land of the free. From massive new data available on pitchers, we've learned that umpires are more likely to widen the strike zone for white pitchers rather than minorities (Gamson,1964, p.70).

This not only represents the racial inequality that still continues to live in the baseball world today but also, the stigmas that other stakeholders put on African Americans. In the end, the jobs of umpires are being expressed in the wrong way by treating African Americans unfairly, with disproportionate equality based on the color of one's skin in what is supposed to be a fair game. Stadiums are prime spots to engage in the study of cathedrals of consumption. At games, fans become a spectacle by cheering on teams, singing along to music, and engaging in provided audience games (Kahn,1991, p.402). We become accustomed to what we support and largely engage in within our social groups in society. Continuing with social problems in professional baseball, the video includes spectator violence, cheating by players and officials, and greed of owners and players. Throughout the movie, spectator violence played a huge part in racial discrimination. Fans would yell out the n-word and speak with the highest level of cruelty to show that they aren't in favor of African Americans playing on the same team as white people. Families in the crowd would bring their kids and these young children would start yelling the n-word or things like you don't belong here because they copy what their parents do. Cheating was a big social problem in the sports world because of being a different race from everyone else. Officials would call Jackie out at first base after clearly being safe, just because of his skin color. These multifaceted issues influenced both society and sport as a whole.

Sociological issues that are still widely known but are not shown in the movie 42 includes gambling, crime by athletes, drug enhancement, and the media. Gambling has remained an issue of concern to the MLB for many years. According to Fitts, gamblers' interest in baseball pre-dated the Civil War, and more bets were placed on MLB games than any other collective sport in the nation (Fitts,1994, p.79). Crime by athletes is more prone to happen because they seem to have an easier chance to get away with things. Athletes hold a higher position in society and this fact allows them to have the ability to commit a crime without the worry of being punished. Such crimes could include taking drugs to enhance your performance or to create a bulkier look in the sport, just to gain a greater advantage than someone not taking steroids. A sociological issue that has a huge impact on the sports world is the media. Media in baseball changes fans views on some topics and puts labels on athletes. In the end, media changes the beauty of the actual game. Sports viewership varies by gender. Men's sports that are typically viewed live or on television include football, basketball, hockey, baseball, and while the women's sports that area covered include gymnastics, skiing, and diving. People would say sexism plays a role in the idea that men's sports are covered more often than women's sports both in print and on television.

After watching 42, I have learned the importance of equality and leadership. The importance of equality and leadership are crucial factors in this movie. People cannot change without making a sacrifice. The sacrifice isn't always tangible, but rather a change to how a person views themselves, or the world. In the movie 42, as with most change that happens in the world, different groups display different attitudes; some welcome him and treat him with equal fairness. For those who struggle, it is because Robinson's arrival challenges their sense of belonging and understanding of their own personal identity. Having learned and being influenced by these two factors, I can relate them to the class, textbook, and articles that I engage with. Like class discussions and textbook or online resources, the importance of equality and leadership is in almost every unit we learn about. Equality is what shapes us as a society and leadership is what encourages us to stand up for what we believe in. As an example, in class, we have discussed many positions of inequality that are incorporated in the sports world between men versus women, black versus white, or sports versus media.

In the face of opposition, change requires personal courage and an ability to live with discomfort. In the movie 42, there was a very powerful scene between a teammate and Jackie. Robinson receives a folder full of death threats against himself and says, I just want to play ball coach. When teammate Pee Wee turns up at the next game, he makes a show by putting his arm around Robinson's shoulders to show his family and friends in the crowd what he stands for. This sacrifice represented the fight for equality and the importance behind the movie. One day, we will no longer see the world with divided lenses, but we will participate solely for the love of the game with a shared spirit of powerful group morale.

Impact of the Globalization of Baseball

The reason why I chose this topic is because when it comes to international trade, baseball has an important influence on how some countries export talent to bring in more money. Baseball is known as America's national past time, however during about the past generation, especially from the 1980's to the present, the world has experienced fundamental changes, and globalization has emerged as one of the foremost discourses. The global development of sport has also accelerated from the 1980's; for example, one can find the flows from country to country of sporting goods, equipment and landscapes that have grown such as the development of the media-sport production complex and project images to global audiences. The migration dimension involves the international movement of people such as tourists, exiles and guest workers; in the sports arena, the global migration of sports personnel, such as coaches, players, etc. has been a pronounced and established feature of the sporting 'global village' in recent decades.

For instance, the movement of player migration occurs in some sports, such as professional baseball, between North America, Latin America, and East Asia. The economic dimension has been obviously concerned on the rapid flow of money and its equivalents around the world. It is evident that the flow of finance in the global sports arena has come to focus on the international trade in personnel, prize money and endorsements, and the marketing of sport along specific lines. Another factor that must be considered is the media dimension, it entails the flow between countries of information and images that are produced and distributed by newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and the World Wide Web.

The sport-related media continuously 'broadcasts' images of sports to large global audiences. For example, consider worldwide audiences for the World Baseball Classic in 2006. Another example of worldwide exposure would be younger baseball players who are in their early stage of baseball; during in the summer they also televise the Little League World Series. This is where the talent from different countries get their first chance to show the world how good they are. The U.S. is a central part of the global system, the most striking example of transnational power of sports organization is Major League Baseball. Players from outside the United States are defined as guest workers in this system; In the MLB, many players are recruited from Latin American countries, such as the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. Since the turn of the century there has been more of an influx of Asian players that have been a part of the North American professional baseball market and as a result of that baseball business is booming in Asia as a rapidly-swelling band of fans follow the exploits of home-grown players on the other side of the Pacific.

The growing prominence of foreign born baseball players in MLB appears not only in the performances of foreign superstars such as Sammy Sosa, but also in overall number of foreign players on MLB rosters. By 2005, 242 overseas players, which occupied 29.2% of 829 Major League players, were feature from 15 countries together with Puerto Rico and the Virgin Island. The Dominican Republic leads all countries with 91 players; Venezuela is second with 46, Puerto Rico is the third with 34. As for the Asian countries Japan leads with 21 players, South Korea has 9, and Taiwan has 3. The business of Major League Baseball continues to grow at an extraordinary pace through the expansion of their digital of their digital streaming infrastructure efforts. MLB Advanced Media spin-off BAMTech and Discovery Communications, have reached a long term-term partnership; that gives them access to select European sports rights from worldwide sports properties.

While both MLBAM and Discovery Communications would not reveal the financial details, it does not alter the current ownership stake for BAMTech; currently MLB Advanced Media has a 58% stake. One thing is certain; MLB's owners will be reaping the long term benefits as the media landscape is on the verge of a substantial shift. According to MLBAM, in the 14 years of its existence, they and the spin-offs currently are serving 7.5 million total global subscribers with its U.S. based clients' OTT products. So moving into the European market seems like the next logical step. Their main goal obviously is to bring in more revenue, but I also feel like they want to promote the game of baseball to a bigger global market. The new-found revenues will give baseball's owners continued cost certainty outside of how well their respective teams perform in the standings, which drive revenues at the gate, via local media contracts, and sponsorships. They have become a growing centralized revenue source that no other sports league has as an advantage. Major League Baseball saw gross revenue increase by $500 million last year, and was quickly approaching $9.5 billion.

In late December they should be at, exceed $10 billion. In 2017, the World Baseball Classic took center stage, Major League Baseball wanted to draw in a big number of audience to watch the tournament, so they invited different countries from all around the world to participate in the tournament. These teams included teams from Europe, the Middle East, Asia and South America, some countries that might not fully grasp the concept and understanding of how the game is played. The main reasoning behind this is that they want more countries to be exposed to the game of baseball and attract more talent for the game to be more diversified. America's pastime has long had a footprint in countries like Japan, Cuba and Mexico; with the WBC they wanted to showcase the talents from other parts of the world. Typically, the WBC was always played in the United States with just the American player, and Caribbean players and the Latin American players; however that years they had some games played in Seoul, South Korea, and Tokyo, Japan here in the U.S. they move around also from Los Angeles, and San Diego to Miami.

Major League Baseball's overall objective internationally is to be the most constructive and meaningful part of cultural life that we can around the world. But that starts with understanding what localized cultural life actually is, and the WBC has served as a sort of fact-finding mission for MLB, allowing the league to learn more about fans and sports culture overseas. The World Baseball Classic was made up of teams from; Canada, China, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Mexico, Venezuela, and the United States in the fourth WBC in tournament history. A couple of first timers Columbia and Israel made it into the tournament as well. When you have such diverse groups of people all working for one common goal it can be a wonderful experience from those countries that really don't get the full exposure to showcase their skills, and it is also nice to know that people back in each teams home countries watch and support the own countrymen to do good things and show teamwork and unity between the nations. Personally, in my view, one of the many reasons why I fell in love with this game is that it showed me that no matter what background you have or where you came from none of that matters; because there is only one common goal that is shared by everybody on that team and it is to go as far as possible to have a chance to win the championship.

The game of baseball shows that there is not one individual that can win the game by themselves; there are nine individuals the field that has to work together as one unit to accomplish their goal of winning. The game can only create life long bond and friendship that can be forever. Baseball is changing from the days when the game was barely being played, with more migration and the influx of international talent coming into the spotlight, baseball is slowly fading away from being America's pastime, the popularity and desire for the domestic players is faded away, the desire to bring in new fresh talent is at a demand right now. With high demands for foreign born players, the Dominican Republic from the Caribbean, and Japan from East Asia are the country's leading the push for more foreign players. For example in the Dominican Republic, baseball is such a predominant sport that the government along with some help from some major leaguers from that country see how the hard work can make a difference in their economy; they have collaborated together to build academic facilities for young people to try-out and work on sharping their skills. On average the youngest Dominican child that is looked at on the streets is about 8 years old that means that from the time that he is scouted at 8 years old unless the age of 15 or 16 they are in these facilities training and bettering their craft. Due to the fact that they are force to quit school and focus only on baseball means that they only have one shot to make it big time in the Major Leagues.

In the Dominican Republic 4 out of 10 children at living at or below poverty, so these kids have to find something to do to generate some income, some go to school, others are out in the streets, and another handful are busy training for their shot at the big time. Many of the kids that go to school, only finish going to middle school, and then they enter the workforce, those who when into the practice facilities, the percentage of these people coming out and making it big time is only 2% of all the children that entered the program. So with them dedicating their whole youth to the developmental system the children never went to school and they don't have any proper education, so they return to poverty. However, those that do end up making the cut they go on and do big things in baseball, most of them come back home to the island after the season is over; on average from all the Dominican born players major league and minor league salaries combined the island racks up about $400 million annually. Some people when they return home from playing baseball for five or six months, they help fund a foundation or an organization to help out there country, some even help build schools, hospitals, etc.

The influence is baseball is so high in the Dominican Republic that each of the 30 Major League teams has a training facility in different parts of the island. At the of the regular season some of the players find a spot of different teams from the Caribbean, Mexico or Latin America and play some pick up winter league baseball; some do this to help improve their skills for the start of next season, others do it to not lose the feel the game. The spending has not come without controversy, as is often the case with U.S. investments in developing countries, allegations of exploitation; doping and other abuses have dogged the U.S.-run academies. Still enduring, however, are charges the teams have exploited desperately poor youngster from the Dominican Republic and elsewhere by encouraging thousand to quit and chase baseball, Ruck says. Conditions at academies have improved markedly in recent years, says Ruck. Most are more or less state-of-the-art facilities that now emphasizes proper nutrition and provides good living quarters, he says. Another country with strong ties to the development of the game of baseball is Japan; although being outnumbered by the baseball crazy corners of the Caribbean and Latin America the Japanese player have stood their ground in MLB. This was evident during the 2017 World Baseball Classic when they finished with a bronze medal, in a competition where they were supposed to finish in the middle of the middle of pack; in that tournament there were sixteen teams, and out of those sixteen to finish in third behind notorious powerhouse nations like the D.R. and the U.S. that was pretty impressive.

The Japanese level of play is so high that some of the players who want to work on their mechanics of pitching or hitting go to Japan to their careers back on track. American players were needed in the years following WWII to raise the level of baseball in Japan from the level of zero that it sunk to. Baseball was introduced into Japan in 1873 by an American teacher in Tokyo, Horace Wilson, and the game caught on very quickly through much of the island nation. At first, the Japanese had difficulty in understanding the rules of the game-and-in that regard Baron Hiroshi Hiraoka in 1877 traveled to the United States and brought back to Japan a translation of the standard baseball rules. During the past century, the Japanese have generally been really receptive to suggestion from American in working on the game's finer points; but on occasion they'll revert to their own practices. When the American players would go on tours to spread awareness and promote the game of baseball in Japan, that give some Japanese businessmen and sports people an ideas to begin to create they own professional league, they were thinking that if they ever had to American teams in a competitive game of baseball they would be good enough at least put up a good fight against good quality teams.

The Japanese began the league with an eight team annual tournament that began back in December 26, 1934; at the beginning of the 1950's professional baseball in Japan really took off and getting major recognition. This was caused due to American players being invited to sign with teams from both the Pacific and Central leagues, the teams were allowed to have two foreigners on its roster, and most of the teams in the league except for one team usually fill their quota. Within the last 25 years there have at least been 100 Americans have either played or coached in Japan and their presence has been significant, because they were vital to the development and structure of the quality of baseball in Japan. One reason why there is not as many Asian- born players in the Major League Baseball is because they like to keep their players domestic just to help make baseball popular within the continent itself; over the years there has been a booming number of fans and people watching the game on television, or listening to it on the radio. All Asian countries are slowly gaining recognition of the talent that has been untapped to its fullest potential. There are some players that are getting permission to come to United States, but those are players who have excelled past their potential and need to be exposed to the rest of the world to showcase their skills and talents.

In recent years, some of the major Japanese imports to the United States have been Yu Darvish and Shohei Ohtani, they were both in their early twenties; and the older imports from Japan are players like Hideki Matsui, Ichiro Suzuki, and Daisuke Matsuzaka. Most of the Japanese players who come into the United Stated are pitchers, in Japan's culture the best player on the team the is pitcher, most of the youth in Japan today who play baseball want to be pitchers. The exposure to the game of baseball in the Asian countries is huge now in today's modern baseball, with more children getting the opportunity to start getting a feel for the baseball at a young age; they are able to learn about the game and improve their skills and techniques at a young age to become the best player possible for the future. Major League Baseball has gained global interest from different parts of the world, and they are starting to become more globalization in parts of the world that were once dominated by other sports, such as, football (soccer), in Brazil, Germany, and other European countries, right now it is a slow process but they feel that with time baseball will become more of a worldwide sport.

Civility Versus Incivility in Nursing: how the Two Affect Professionalism in Nursing

Not very many people consider the consequences of their actions. Unfortunately, this includes nurses as well. At times, hostile work environments are created by the nursing staff. Not all of the nursing staff creates these environments and there are even fewer who realize that they might be causing it. However, whether or not it is intentional it is still a factor of the patient's safety. It can also create workplace violence, including, but not limited to, patient-nurse violence. Incivility will also lead to burn-out and high turnover rates due to dissatisfaction within the place of work. Regrettably, this also includes nursing students in their clinical settings. According to the ANA, there are no laws or current federal legislation that requires hospitals or offices to protect against any kind of bullying or uncivil actions. Unfortunately, it seems as though civility is very rarely seen or practiced in the nursing field. Professionals in the health care environment need to be more civil with each other and to the patients in the future. This will help to construct an enriched working environment. This would also help reduce the amount of interdepartmental changes that are being made by the newer generation of nurses. It would also help keep the newer generations from wanting to leave the profession. If these problems are brought to light and the problems are corrected, then more students would be willing to join the nursing program.

Incivility

There are a number of people who do not fully comprehend the word incivility. They do not recognize that it includes gossiping, being rude to other nurses or patients, using vulgar language, and belittling other people. It does not matter if these actions are intentional or all in good fun. These behaviors foster volatile and dangerous working surroundings.

Rudeness

A nurse's atmosphere is supposed to be therapeutic. It is increasingly difficult to maintain that when there is a constant occurrence of impoliteness and disrespect surrounding them (Critical Care Nurse, 2016). If a nurse has to deal with another nurse or patient being bad-mannered or offensive it can affect any number of activities the nurse must complete before the end of their shift. The nurse might be playing that scenario over in their head when they are pulling medications or performing a task with a patient. The study also shows that rudeness steals a fragment from our working memory and will affect the nurse's ability to think critically when providing care to their patients. More than eighty percent of the respondents for a study conveyed that condescending language was being used and workers were being impatient with questions (Spiri, Brantley and McGuire, 2017). This could be a problem, because a nurse might keep their questions to themselves or waste time by asking a different individual their question. The study also showed that seventy-eight percent of respondents experienced a colleague's reluctance to answer questions or return phone calls. Sixty percent of the respondents reported instances where their questions were not answered at all, and they were just informed to do as they were told. All of these actions greatly increase the chance of interfering with a patient's safety (Spiri, Brantley and McGuire, 2017).

Bullying and Gossiping

Most individuals do not consider the consequences of bullying inside the place of work as well as outside of that environment. As Spiri, Brantley, and McGuire point out in their study for incivility, is that in the hospital or office, the nurse that is being intimidated or tormented by other coworkers is that it could result in a breakdown of communication between the staff (Spiri, Brantley, and McGuire, 2017). The nurse that is being bullied will most likely avoid the people who are harassing her and that could lead to potential problems on the floor. Their study showed that fifty-five percent of the eight hundred hospital staff interviewed avoided the person that they had an altercation with and requested another colleague to help them, forty-seven percent did not look for help and took care of the problem on their own, thirty-one percent reported that they took the word of that person. Four people stated that they ended up having medication errors when intimidation was a part of the conversation. Outside of the work environment, a nurse could become depressed due to what they are going through at work and could bring it home and mull over the situation all night. Some bullying could even lead to suicide, due to a person no longer being able to deal with the harassment every day. In numerous situations a nursing student might be exposed to or experience bullying by the nursing staff during clinicals. This could also make the nursing student afraid to report the issue. This can have serious consequences on the student's performance due to the fact that most students and professors are not taught how to deal with or prevent incivility.

Civility

Having a nursing team on the floor that works well together will not only help to prevent harm to the patients, but can also promote a healthy mental environment for the staff, nursing students and the professors. A work environment is supposed to be a healing and therapeutic place. Being civil can essentially increase work productivity because the nurses and staff enjoy being at their job where they can focus on providing quality care to their patients (American Nurse Today, 2012).

It is important that all health care establishments get on board with providing education and resources. This will help promote a strong, nourishing and beneficial working environment. Not taking action against people or activities can damage relationships within the working place. It is vital that all nurses and healthcare workers think about how they can provide top notch care and promote safety for their patients. Being uncivil towards other nurses or patients will not have a good outcome and therefore is unnecessary and frowned upon in the workplace.

Twelve Angry Men – American Legal Justice System

The story I chose was 12 Angry Men by Reginald Rose written in 1957. Twelve men were picked to sit on a jury for a murder trial. The accused was an 18-year-old boy. He was on trial for murdering his father. If he is convicted, he'll receive a death sentence. This sets the tone for the Play. Bothered by the heat making the room uncomfortable, the jurors had to cast a preliminary vote which came out to eleven guilty and one not guilty. Juror Eight was the only person to vot not guilty and demanded that they discussed the case further. Juror Eight began to question the prosecution's arguments. The knife was originally was thought to be a unique knife and narrowed it down to the accused. He argued that the knife was a common knife and that anyone could've had that style knife and killed his father. This was explained by the following text in the play:

(EIGHT reaches casually into his pocket and withdraws an object. No one notices this. He stands up quietly.)

FOUR. Aren't you trying to make us accept a pretty incredible coincidence?

EIGHT. I'm not trying to make anyone accept it. I'm just saying it's possible.

THREE (shouting). And I'm saying it's not possible.

(EIGHT swiftly flicks open the blade of the switch-knife and quickly jams it into the table next to the first one. They are exactly alike. There are several gasps and everyone stares at the knife. There is a long silence.)

THREE (slowly, amazed). What are you trying to do?

TEN (loud). Yeah, what is this? Who do you think you are?

FIVE. Look at it! It's the same knife! (Rose)

He also distinguished that the downstairs neighbor that witnessed the murder was not likely to have seen what they said they saw. Slowly, through juror 8's reasoning, the other jurors started changing their votes. It seemed like it was going to be a hung jury, but Juror Eight's arguments was successful in changing the other juror's minds. The last one to hold out, Juror Three, finally changed his vote to not guilty at the end. The boy was acquitted of all charges.

Twelve Angry Men was a glimpse of the American legal justice system during the era that if was filmed. Screenwriter Reginald Rose saw American society as crumbling amongst itself, and 12 Angry Men stands as a warning to Americans: remember your responsibilities, stay unified, and be understanding with one another, or the nation will fall. By the end, the film is not about whether or not the accused man was guilty or innocent -- it's about whether or not these 12 diverse men with individual prejudices and personalities can figure out how to work together and come to a decision. (Saporito). We found eleven men, persuaded by prejudices, personal experiences, and impractical thinking, tested by one man who held himself and the other jurors to a higher standard of justice. He commanded that this disregarded member of society be given a fair trial and his due process. We saw the jurors struggle between the responsibility to punish the guilty and to protect the innocent. It proved that the logic behind the justice system does work.

The play also spoke about how America was a melting pot of different cultures, concepts, opinions, and personalities. This jury included a German immigrant watchmaker to an affluent broker to a nurse at a hospital. These men characterized the diversity in America and the many challenges that it presented. This battle became a vital part of the war within the play. Rose expressed this by making the jury room hot with the AC or fan not working to represent their hot tempers. But as the story went on, the tempers cooled as the rain and the finding of a fan in the seemed to cool off the room and they can think more reasonably.

Another thing I found interesting is that throughout the play, no names are used. You never hear the names of the jurors, anyone involved in the case, or even the witnesses. The lack of names given in the play was a reminder that it's not the single person that matters in a jury. It's the jury and its part in the judicial process. The defendant is mentioned as either defendant, accused, or boy. The witnesses are called the downstairs neighbor or the old man. There was no suggestions of time and place, except that it happened in the summer. I believe that it was with the expectation that anyone reading it will reflect on the bigger picture and not on the characters themselves. A reader may think that this somehow takes away from the characters' personalities or the audience's ability to relate to them. To the contrary, the unnamed men who are tasked with the fate of a young man could be your father, husband, son, or grandfather and every personality type is portrayed in this fascinating psychological drama. A Fight against Racism

Racism has been a part of society since the beginning of time. People are not born with racist ideas or attitudes. Racism is something, an individual learns over time. Racism does not usually cause any harm to the person being racist. It is usually the receiver who ends up being hurt the most. It affects the community and our society just as equally as it hurts the individual (Connie). To face racism and police brutality the black community, started a movement known as the Black Lives Matter movement back in 2013. This movement started off as a hashtag movement back in 2013 when Alicia Garza responded on her Facebook page to the clearing of George Zimmerman, the man who gunned down Trayvon Martin (Carter).

Since then it has gained a lot of following through social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. If you were to log onto any of these platforms today and just type in #blacklivesmatter numerous results show up. This just shows how many people have partaken in this movement and how huge it has become over the past couple of years. With the help of social media, this movement has been able to get its word across to numerous individuals all around the globe. Even though this movement is empowering in many ways, there are individuals who tend to find the negative aspect of it. Some tend to believe that people who support this movement, do not mind other races getting affected. One of the major argument about this movement is that it only cares about black life when white people are the ones responsible for taking it, and ignoring it when African American people are responsible for certain events of violence in black communities (Smith).

I do not agree with this because, the Black Lives Matter movement, is centered around all events affecting the black community, no matter what the race of the individual who conducted the crime is. Even though race plays a significant part in this movement, so does police brutality. As Stephen states in the Get up, Stand up: Social Media Helps Black Lives Matter Fight the Power, The movement wins when there's a broad understanding that we need a system that doesn't kill people, when a critical mass of citizens can envision what that looks like, and when concrete steps are taken to make it happen. Stephen makes a good point about how developing a system that doesn't kill people right at the spot of witnessing a crime being committed, but instead giving the individual an opportunity to state their side of the story, can be beneficial to our country as a whole. We would not lose any more innocent individuals to such brutality. Police brutality is usually known as using unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians. There are many different forms of police brutality. The most common form of police brutality is a physical form. Police officers can use guns, tasers, pepper spray, and batons, in order to physically terrorize or even intentionally hurt civilians (Danilina).

Infact, as Danilina mentioned, The history of police brutality dates all the way back to the Industrial Revolution in the 1870s when law enforcement would physically abuse and harm the workers that went on a strike (Danilina). Police brutality in the black community was the reason why the Black Lives Matter movement began in the first place. It began with the incident of Trayvon Martin was shot by his neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida. Martin was carrying iced tea and candy as he walked from a convenience store back to his father's fiancee house when Zimmerman noticed him and believed him to be a suspicious person in his neighborhood. Zimmerman's claim was that Martin hit him, and he took out his gun and shot it in self-defense. Later in 2013, Zimmerman was acquitted of a second-degree murder (Simon).

A similar incident occurred in July of 2014 in Staten Island, New York when Eric Garner was put into a chokehold by a police officer and ended up dying as he could not breathe because he suffered from asthma. Garner was a father of six, who the police tried to arrest, in front of a store for allegedly selling cigarettes. The jury, later on, declined to indict the police officer who put Garner in a chokehold, causing protests and die-ins (Simon). This is seen as a sign of police brutality because the New York Police Department prohibits the use of chokeholds to be used, and still, the police officer insisted on utilizing it. Even though, it was his fault and absolutely against the law, the court and the jury declined to indict him. I believe that this incident can be seen as both racism and police brutality, because as stated in the article Garner raised both of his hands in the air and asked the officers not to shoot him, (Simon) showing that he was willing to cooperate. But instead of letting Garner talk and say his side of the story the police officers put him in a chokehold. If this incident occurred where a white man was selling cigarettes, the police officers would have happily cooperated with him and let him tell his side of the story.

The Black Lives Matter movement has been one of the most controversial topics in recent years. Many African Americans experience verbal and physical abuse. The slogan All Lives Matter is explained to have equality across all races and religions, though this is not the case. In November 2015, President Donald Trump said the Blacks were responsible for more than 97% of murders of Blacks and 82% of murders of Whites. Both statistics are wrong, the latter monstrously so: African-Americans accounted for about 15% of murders of Whites, according to FBI data (Smith). Many White people are content to see when they are blaming the Blacks for deaths and calling to the end of the issue. During President Trump's campaign, if he was elected he would make stricter laws and even enforce death penalty if a police officer is killed. Even though a president does not have the authority to do such, his primary goal was to attune backlash towards the Blacks.

This account changed the direction of the movement and obscures the critique of violence, inequality, and failings at all levels of the criminal justice system (Smith). In 2014 and 2016 there were three ambush murders in New York, Baton Rouge, and Dallas (Smith). These accidents were committed by a gunman that wanted to seek revenge against police force for the violence resisting to the Black communities (Smith). Nevertheless, the Black Lives Matter movement backlash has gone out of reach, and one of the examples is the former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani. He said Black Lives Matter never protests when every 14 hours someone is killed in Chicago, probably 70-80% of the time by a Black person. Where are they then? Where are they when a young Black child is killed?. This argument is a popular one because the blacks are being blamed when the White were responsible for taking their lives (Smith). Like the slogan All Lives Matter, it is a way of changing the subject (Smith).

For the Black Lives Matter Movement to make it to the point where there is a change in society there needs to be civil disobedience, legal challenges, and new laws. These things all contribute to change occurring in a society (Siscoe). The different chapters across the United States are staging protests that cause an interruption in people's lives and bring attention to the movement in order to get more awareness in the society for the controversial problem (Siscoe). All this movement has to do is cause enough ruckus so it reaches the screens of thousands of individuals in various parts of the world. Once it does this, and individuals realize what has been happening is wrong they will come together and fight as a community to get new laws or even change the laws that preexist. As Siscoe mentions one of the analyses of the Black Lives Matter Movement is that it is troublesome and the protests cause a little discomfort in people's lives. Though this is not the goal of the movement, in order to get more attention to the public, the problem needs to be heard by creating tension in the society.

The main goal of the Black Lives Matter Movement is to fight the colorblind racism and change mindset and system of the American citizens. The freedom that allows the Black communities to allow large social movements such as the Black Lives Matter movement to grow and bring change to the face of the society, and change the view for the better. As Siscoe mentions this movement works at many different levels, it understands how the general population's beliefs about crime and racism work against any sort of reform to lower the racial disparities that are widespread throughout every level of the criminal justice system. Now the hashtag #blacklivesmatter has brought more attention to the communities and especially the government of America. In recent years, you can see how many people have understood the movement and have partaken in it.

Many people around the globe are now seeing the negative effects of the brutality that the Blacks are unfortunately going through. The Black Lives Matter Movement is a social movement seeing the different races and ethinicites and bringing awareness that everyone matters. This movement is a theory in a world where Black lives are intentionally targeted to make it seem as they're the only ones responsible for any incident caused. And for this reason, I believe that Black Lives Matter movement is important and should be noticed worldwide.

Black Lives Matter against Police Brutality

African Americans have suffered at the hands of law enforcement for far too long. Black Lives Matter is a movement created to bring awareness to police brutality and diminish it. In Dani McClain's article, Black Lives Matter: What Comes After the Hashtag?, she proceeds to discuss how social media sparked the BLM movement and all of the campaigns that were created to help those oppressed by the law. Similar to this, in Josh Bowers' article, Annoy No Cop, he explains how the enemy in this play are the officers themselves. Although Bowers' does make a reasonable argument, he seems a bit too close minded, whereas McClain stands with the BLM movement and discusses the positive impact it has on those that have suffered loss.

In Bowers' article, he argues that officers are exercising their power over the people. He touches on the Black Lives Matter Movement, but he does not go into detail about what it has done to benefit African Americans; he mostly discusses the downsides of the law between a civilian and a law enforcement official. He explains this by saying :if the officer's legal and factual mistakes are deemed reasonable, then his conduct -the arrest- is constitutional. In turn, I am subjected to a different constraint. and in public, possess no open containers of something that an officer reasonably could believe to be alcohol (even if it not) in a manner he reasonably could believe violates the law (even if it does not). The end result is that the officer has the opportunity to arrest me with neither sufficient proof of a criminal act not even an applicable criminal statue. My autonomy is constrained by the reasonable officer's belief, evaluated from his perspective (Bowers 134). The purpose of BLM was to empower those traumatized by the recent events, but Bowers does not go into detail on that.

In McClain's article, she provides a deeper insight on the BLM movement; she touches on the topic of activists who suffer from depression and she supplies information on the events leading up to the movement, as well as details of activists and their accomplishments. Unlike many authors, McClain gives insight on the lives of those who support BLM. She begins by introducing Sandra Bland's distress signals before committing suicide. Another tragic incident, MarShawn McCarrel, posted on his Facebook page before fatally shooting himself on the steps of his state's capitol. Since their deaths, word has spread about Black Lives Matter activists having depression. (McClain 18).

McClain then explores the accomplishments that the activists have achieved. After the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, hundred of students in Miami-Dade and Broward counties protested on the fact that the Martin's killer, George Zimmerman, hadn't been arrested on any charges. Umi Selah and others in a college activist group organized a forty mile (forty miles for forty days that Zimmerman remained free) march from Daytona Beach to the Sanford Police Department. About a year later, Zimmerman was claimed not guilty on charges of second-degree murder/manslaughter. Angered by this, the Dream Defenders arrived in Tallahassee and occupied the Florida statehouse for 4 weeks as an attempt to push Republican Governor Rick Scott to call a special legislative session to review the state's stand your ground law, racial profiling, and school push-out policies, all of which the organization linked to Martin's death. (19).

Following those events was the death of Michael Brown. McClain continues to address the massive twitter feud regarding the incident on November 24, 2014, when the St. Louis County prosecutor announced that a grand jury had determined not to press charges against the officer responsible for Michael Brown's demise, Darren Wilson. Weeks later, when the police officer who choked Eric Garner to death in New York City was also not indicted, 4.4 million tweets over a period of seven days kept the nation's attention focused on the fight for police accountability. Hashtags like #BlackLivesMatter, #Ferguson, #HandsUpDontShoot and #IfTheyGunnedMeDown gave users including those not yet involved in activism a way to contribute to conversations they cared about. (20).

The purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement is so much more than officer vs citizen. It is about human rights. As McClain stated, Today's racial-justice movement demands an end to the disproportionate killing of black people by law-enforcement officials and vigilantes. (20)

African Americans have undergone torment and suffering since the days of Jim Crow, and continue to do so today. Racism is still with us. But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and, hopefully, we shall overcome.

It is an inseparable part of educational systems based on achievements of the learners. Assessment has" the most important influence on students' learning" (George & Cowan, 1999, P .8). So, teachers should evaluate their students frequently. They should spend some of their class time for some type of assessment (Stiggins, 2001). Many researchers have found that alternative assessment techniques are an effective and dynamic process in evaluating learners' educational progress.

Alternative assessment consists of procedures that facilitate the teaching process and can associate easily into daily programs of the class ( Hamayan, 1995). It is even more efficient in EFL contexts in which students can reveal what they can produce instead of memorizing and remembering (Huerta-Macias, 1995). Alternative assessment can collect data about how students can process and accomplish real-life tasks 2 One method whose use in teaching and learning has remained rare, is self-assessment. Self-assessment, as an alternative has attracted much attention in recent years with the increased attention to learner-centred curricula, needs analysis, and learner autonomy. Its potential value as an instructional tool facilitates learning and it has been a topic of many surveys. Self-assessment does not mean that students assess themselves in the form of grades. In a learner-centred pedagogy which considers learners as active participants in education and learning, the task of evaluation or assessment is given to the students. It is a process in which learners judge their abilities, performances, and qualities of learning. Self-assessment process includes all activities undertaken in the class by the students to evaluate the process of their own learning and their strengths and weaknesses to adjust the teaching-learning strategies (Black & William, 1998).

The interest in nontraditional forms of assessment has caused many European countries to use self-assessment widely because it is considered as a logical element of learner-centred education which emphasises learner independence and autonomy. The students engage in their own learning and assess their progress and then take full responsibility for it. What is obvious in using self-assessment techniques is the active participation of the learners in the learning and evaluation process. This participation brings more motivation to the learners as they see themselves to be responsible for their own learning. Self-assessment is one of the most important tools that teachers use to motivate students in learning. Teachers help them to use their own inner power which causes them to think, to engage and to achieve meaningful learning. Research has shown that using self-assessment can positively influence intrinsic motivation levels in students (Rolheiser & Ross, 1998). 3 Self-assessment results in learning improvements if teachers implement the procedure properly. Researchers will get the maximum benefit from it so that credible data about students' learning will be provided which are mostly not available to teachers. Hence, successful formative assessment depends on active students' involvement which enhances student motivation by providing a sense of ownership and responsibility. Engagement also increases intrinsic motivation to value performance more on competence, not on grades and rewards. Students should know about their abilities and progress, they need to know what they can do or cannot with the skills they have acquired. Without such knowledge, it would not be easy for them to learn efficiently.

In an educational system, knowing about the extent to which students can improve their own performance is also important. If they can do it, they do not depend on the opinions of teachers, and they can also make teachers aware of their individual needs. John Upshur (1975) is a scholar who used self-assessment as a factor in the improvement of second language abilities. He believed that traditional assessment shows only a small proportion of students' ability. Thenceforth, self-evaluation can be used as a measure of the assessment of language proficiency. Other researchers have also found that it is an effective method of teaching. (Brantmeir, 2006; Little,2005; Revers,2001). Self-assessment is a reliable method for improving students' skills and abilities (Ekbatani,2000; Nunan,1988). On the other hand, we know that anxiety plays an important role in language learning. Anxiety can interfere in all language acquisition stages: input, process, and output. Different studies that examine anxiety and language learning can provide insights into how teachers can use appropriate strategies to decrease anxiety among EFL learners. If we know about the causes and effects of language anxiety and different suitable strategies to 4 increase the students' self-confidence, then we can lower their language anxiety that can affect their language learning. MC Donald and Boud (2003) found that when learners assess their own learning, their learning will be promoted to a high extent; so, it enhances their self-confidence.

Nowadays, learning English is a very important need. It is spoken and used in a great number of different countries all around the world. So, the increasing use of communication in English for many reasons (trade, tourism, politics, culture, sports, high tech, etc.) has led to conducting investigations on factors which can support the improvement of further learning. Investigations concerning self-assessment in language learning can determine the effect of self-assessment in proficiency testing in different language skills. This study is performed in to check the abilities of each student to improve their competence in speaking.

How to Overcome Depression and Anxiety?

I want to share with you some ways how you can probably overcome depression and anxiety. Well, I'm not going to tell you what to do but I just want to share with you the daily habbits I have to fight depression and anxiety just in case it's something that will benefit you and I also look forward to learning from you. So if you know anything and have personal experiences that I won't mention right here, please feel free to leave a comment.

First of all, if I hit my knees in the morning when I get up, I pray. Now I want you to know that when I say the word prayer I don't want you to be intimidated because I'm not necessarily talking about praying to a Christian God or anything specific culture belief system but I'm more talking about getting outside yourself. I think by just putting it to the universe that you need help and you need guidance, you're are therefore looking for strength. It sorts of invokes the sense that you're not doing it alone which usually puts you in a place of feeling like you're going at this condition or you're taking on a day which sometimes can seem impossible with help. It's something that I have fought along time that the more I give myself to it, the better I feel and easier to get out of bed and feel that I'm not alone. So if you're desperate enough, I suggest you try this and you can also find incredible meditation practices online if you want to stay away from the word prayer which is totally fine so don't sleep on that.

Secondly, being social everyday can also beat depression. Well, I'm not like saying you go to a giant party with people you don't know but when you're around people that know you, that care about you, that love you and you know, it seem to bring out a better version of you even when you're severely depressed. It could bring some light in you that you thought it's completely deem. I'm often so uncomfortable being around people that I can't imagine doing it but then I spend sometime with people and when I'm done spending time with them, I usually feel grateful that I did. If you spend sometime with a person who understands depression and anxiety, it makes a big difference so don't listen to that voice that tells you to be alone and force yourself because your survival could depend on socializing to activate your recovery from depression.

You should also get involved in doing physical exercises. For me, waking up everyday running around, jumping and lifting weight helped me a lot to fight depression. Everybody by now should know the science behind exercising so it's just a matter of finding something you feel comfortable doing every single day no matter what. A lot of people also rely on motivation in case they want something to get done but you don't need to get motivated to get it done as long as you believe in the act that you are doing. In other words, if you know it's good for you just take your feet and let your brain follow.

Lastly, you also need to eat as healthy as you can. Well, I'm not talking about what you should or shouldn't have but most people can agree with me that diets high in processed foods with simple carbohydrates and added sugars typically are not very good so literally you should find some form of diet that you can stick to because that's something you can control. It's natural to want to eat so as to comfort yourself and I also did it for a long time but it's a downward spiral if it gets itself because it sorts of adds more problems so you should figure out a form of diet that you can stick to.

The Mental Health of Prisoners

This article is important because it focuses on psychological changes, social problems solving, and effects that males experience while in prison. The pains of imprisonment have grown over decades causing prisoners to undergo harsh conditions, along with facing many different problematic situations to survive in prison. The article mentioned how many males who are incarcerated have a hard time adjusting while facing many challenging consequences, that can have an effect on their mental stability and social issues. Also, having an effect on how they deal and cope with different situation in prison which can lead to the male prisoner having built up anxiety. The mental health of prisoners is discussed and how some of their mental health issues are connected to earlier experiences and other traumatic events that may have been experienced.

Although, all of the prisoners do not have a challenge with mental health issues, for example depression or anxiety. Some prisoners develop mental illnesses while being incarcerated because they are being exposed to many different violent acts and altercations that they have not been exposed to before. Violence throughout prisons can be a result from psychological, mental, and social problems that the inmates face on a daily basis. Exposure to many different violent acts, mistreatment, and rape are the main factors why inmates deal with depression. Some inmates encounter and suffer from many different counts of rape. Inmates who were incarcerated for a longer period of time showed that they were at higher risk for being treated for a mental disorder. The method used for collecting this data were assessments, SPSI-R, NPO, and more which are self-report questionnaires. All data was analyzed using SPSS. Reflection: The results throughout this study was surprising to me. I didn't realize how many males who are incarcerated who deal many psychological and social problems which can lead to depression or stress. I believe this study adds to the field of psychology because it deals with mental health issues within the prisons, for example many inmates deal with trauma before they are sentenced and while they are incarcerated. It also relates to psychology because many inmates face difficulties dealing and coping with different situations.

For example, many inmates deal with anxiety and depression. This study throughout the article can be related to the field of forensic psychology. Forensic psychology plays a big part in this this article because it deals with social problem solving, resulting back on what traumatic events or events caused someone to commit the crime they did. Also, the inmates then have a hard time coping or solving problems on the crime they committed and their ability to deal with being imprisoned. This article is associated with human behaviors and interactions in psychology the psychology field. My overall opinion of the article was that the study should have consisted of more life traumatic events other than early childhood trauma and trauma that occurs within the inmates who are imprisoned. Overall, I really enjoyed the article and learning different things about prisoners and what they have a hard time dealing and coping with. Also, I liked this article because I found out information that I wasn't clear on before. For example, the negative problem orientation throughout jails are the highest dealing with anxiety and depression between inmates.

How Can you Help your Child Overcome Anxiety?

Introduction

About 20% of teenagers suffer from depression on their way to adulthood and now more are due to the spread of the internet and the easy access to cyber-bullying by those they know and complete strangers as well. However while some do grow out of it without help, others need a bit of a push to get out of their mental shell keeping enclosed in something that feels like an endless hole, a constant sink. And sometimes those who need to give them that push are their parents, but how can parents really help? How can they actually put a positive impact onto this dark moment in their kid's life?

Global Perspective

While this planet is evolving, so are the people living in it. In this whole world mental disabilities like depression or anxiety are sky-rocketing especially in teens between ages of 12 and older, take America, for example, according to those in the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and the University's Mailman School of Public Health in Columbia, rates of teen depression and anxiety started to rise at an incredible rate within the years of 2005 and 2015. Since that was during 2015 it is most likely that, along with the advancements in technology, that by 2020 this will not only be a simple occurrence and instead become an worldwide epidemic.

There are parents all over the world, and while some are living in problematic areas where they need to work more than others and don't have enough time to genuinely take care of their children, while they still do care they need to earn more money in order to support their children financially. But they can still look out for a lot of symptoms most don't realize their kids are going through, and all these slight changes are things even children themselves should be looking out for. Such as, a sudden change in the amount of food they eat, like the quantity decreasing or increasing, seeing them deny food with reasons like "I lost my appetite" or "I already ate". This is very unhealthy but most often parents all around the world usually assume that their child is just trying out a new diet or just doesn't feel hungry in that moment. Other symptoms are like sudden outburst of anger or getting irritated or angry easier and at more insignificant things. Often having abrupt snaps at people in their life, distancing themselves from friends and family, keeping them at arm's length. Especially with wanting their kids to go through school and have a better future than they did. But in countries that have an overall higher rate of teenagers gaining depression and anxiety parents should be looking out for the symptoms I have previously mentioned. The highest overall country with the most depression rates is India with China and USA following close behind, however for countries with higher anxiety rates the tables turn into China being first with India and USA following at 2nd and 3rd. In countries like America there are a lot of therapies that parents try to send their kids into or kids go in by their own will to help themselves with their mental problems or to get diagnosed / checkup. On one side therapy can really help a child but on the other it can simply make things worse with children feeling worse after having explained it all and putting all their fears and emotions out there to a stranger they hardly know.

National Perspective

According to the study that the World Health Organization coordinated, Indonesia, the country in which I, and many others, live in, is in the 4th place for the country with most deaths due to the behavioral disorder that is scientifically diagnosed as "depression" and is in 5th place for the most disease from anxiety. From an interview hosted by "ncdalliance" featuring the Chairman of Indonesian Psychiatric Association (PDSKJI) Eka Viora it is said that an astonishing 3.7 percent of Indonesia's population has to endure depression during their youth. That is approximately 9 million people with depression and an extra 8 million whom suffer with anxiety, with some obviously being teens and children or young adults. While there are many hotlines for people who suffer from this to call, that doesn't entirely fix the problem at hand, that millions of people are under going this kind of mental unstableness that they have almost zero control since depression was studied to be relatively genetic and so far in Indonesian and in fact the whole world , permanent cures haven't been found. While anti-depressants are available they come at a price and for those who can't afford a physiatrist they cant get a prescription and therefor cant obtain the medicine. The average cost of a bottle of antidepressants like Zoloft and Prozac range from 39 dollars to a large 74 dollars. A month.
While seeming like a temporary fix it also comes with several side affects such as nausea, increased appetite, fatigue and insomnia just to name a few.

From what I could gather from all the research I went through I found out that parents really have a very big part in someone's mental health. With all of it

Possible Outcomes and Scenarios

There are hundreds of possible complications emerging if even a small thing was to go wrong, little ripples can create problematic waves. Many of those dilemmas is one most parents secretly fear deep down, their child committing self-sacrifice, also known as, suicide. This would be one of the worst endings to a kid's life, but witnessing them struggle and go through traitorous highs and triecious lows, similar to self-harm and a constant thought of wanting to end it.

With worse to come if the children are unfortunate and was gifted with parents whom couldn't care less about a child's mental state and would simply let them be, without these guardians to look up to children often fall deeper into this mayhem and end up worsening their already terrible diagnosis. A child could very well also be depressed and suffer from anxiety due to the ways their parents treated them along with the fact the most schools around the world either have horrific bullying classes which lead people to insanity and to have them jump or end it with a knife, some schools also have abusive teachers and faculty members which shouldn't be anywhere near kids. With all of these parts coming into play it almost seems like there is no escape, but truly there is, multiple ways of doing so, in fact.

Possible courses of action

There are many ways to nip this problem in the bud, some including anti-depressants and professional help from a therapist.

Personal response

I suppose my life has been pretty smooth through out it all, with a few bumps but nothing bad really happens. And I'm fortunate to have parents like my own that don't cut the crap when it comes to their kid. I had a few bad days and went through my own small depression with short relapses now and then, luckily for me I never needed to take medication or needed any kind of professional help. Through out it all, I found that my friends were the biggest help and not so much my parents, while they were there for me they never really helped. I tried opening up and they didn't say much, and when I spoke about my problems they simply gave a straight forward answer and didn't help emotionally more so physically. But without them I wouldn't have become who I am now, which in the results of the 16personalities test happens to be an INTJ, introverted, nurturing, thinker and a judger. Which I can, now, proudly say I am. During the times of relapse my father tended to be on the more cold side of the spectrum which many work on many children, apparently me as well, choosing against being a shoulder to cry on and instead being someone who would give me the cold, hard truth whether I wanted it or not. Often opting to choose telling me how to fix my problems and getting to the root of everything and telling to "man" up, or in my case "woman" up.

While most of this treatment did work, I found myself falling into a deeper hole, because of envy on how others have parents who treated them sweetly. But in the end, I'm glad I have my parents who pushed to my breaking point and broke me into something I never thought I could be. Similar to a Matryoshka doll. This way of reaction to when a child opens up isn't something I would recommend all parents to do, however every child is different and should be all treated with the rights of any human and as parents they should be treated with kindness and warmth as a default.

Firstly parents need to have a very close relationship with their children, while parents can't expect kids to open up to them with out a very close friendship and trust, families all around the globe should already be close enough so that the members can feel safe to open up to others. Now onto how parents are supposed to deal with this, if their children show signs of possibly having it. It's natural for parents to be worried when their children display signs of unstableness or the lack of will to live, however very few times do parents actually acknowledge these little changes their child shows. While most adjustments are very common like those I have previously mentioned and are easier to notice, this reason is one that very few people realize. The blanking of the eyes, looking into the eye of someone who is going through something difficult or have lost hope often seems blank, or as if all the twinkle it once had has disappeared or vanished between a period of time. But for one to realize this disorder by themselves if often found out by the constant or reoccurring thoughts of death and suicide.

Analysis of Student Anxiety

Abstract:

This study aims to determine students anxiety level in learning at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 3 Kabupaten Tebo. This research is a qualitative descriptive research with the subject of research of class VIII students consisting of 2 classes. Data obtained through observation, documentation, interview and questionnaire on students covering physical, cognitive and emotional aspects. The results showed that students anxiety level in class VIII A was 50% (medium category) on physical aspect, 58% (medium category) on cognitive aspect and 56% (moderate category) on emotional aspect. In class VIII B data students anxiety level acquired 55% (medium category) on physical aspect, 56% (medium category) on cognitive aspect and 61% (high category) on emotional aspect. Based on these results it can be concluded that the students anxiety level in learning at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 3 Kabupaten Tebo is in medium category.

INTRODUCTION

At Junior High School level/MTs, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are studied integratedly on Natural Science subjects. Depdiknas (2011) in Putri (2013) showed that integrated science learning is an approach to science teaching that connects or integrates various fields of IPA study into a single unit. Integrated science learning should also include the dimensions of attitudes, processes, products, applications, and creativity in the learning environment and students are expected to have holistic science knowledge to deal with daily life issues contextually through integrated science learning. The breadth of the scope of the Integrated IPA learning that must be mastered by the students requires readiness in the implementation of the learning process because students' readiness in receiving the lessons will ultimately affects the learning outcomes. Soejanto (1991) in Dessy Mulyani (2013, p. 27-28) showed that students' readiness is very important to achieve success in learning activities. The success of students doing readiness before following the lesson can determine the success of students in learning, so that it will affect student's achievement. If the student is not ready to accept the lesson, it will affect the student's psychic condition. For example, the student feels nerveous when the teacher asks him/her to stand in front of the class.

According to MOH RI (1990) in Ika (2014, p. 126) anxiety is a tension, insecurity and anxiety arising from perceived unpleasantness. anxiety can also be interpreted as someone's excessive concern for the future and his past as well as his abilities (Cowden, 2010). In each student, the symptoms of anxiety that appear are different. Usually it is seen from the physical conditions that ultimately affect the ability of these students in learning. Robert Priest in Namora (2009, p. 15-16) reveals that in times of anxiety the body reacts to physical reactions including the throbbing symptoms; trembling; tension; anxious and restless. Related to learning, there are two kinds of anxiety, survival anxiety and learning anxiety. Learning anxiety can arise because of fear of trying new things that are feared to be too difficult to do, besides that fear will make us look stupid in the effort. Learning anxiety is also influenced by concerns to get out of the comfort zone that has been lived. However, learning anxiety will always be there but if students accept and understand their need to learn, then this can be overcome (Coutu, 2012). Bolliger & Halupa (2012) found that there was a real relationship between anxiety and satisfaction in learning. It can be stated that students who have low or moderate levels of anxiety have a high level of satisfaction and the other hand.

The results of observation which is conducted at MTs N 3 of Tebo District on February 13th, 2017 showed that there are some symptoms such as sound and shaking legs, cold sweats, disturbed concentration, and nervousness. All of these symptoms occur when the student is asked by the teacher or asked to speak in front of the class, this is done by the teacher to keep the students focus during the learning but not all students match with the method of learning like this. Based on the results of the study, shows that anxiety affects academic achievement (Harris & Coy, 2003; McCraty, 2003 in Yaman (2014, p. 1118), mathematical connection ability (Ika, 2014), attitudes and retention (Elliot & Smith, 2003; Gaudry & Spielberger, 1971; Levitt, 1966; Miller et al, 2001 in Hullinger & Hogan, 2014, page 32). In addition anxiety can be affected by increase of grade level, mother and father education level and decrease on academic achievement scores for science lesson (Karakaya et al, 2016, page 29). If this anxiety is not delt immediately, it can lead to other disorders such as panic and stress, but if it can be controlled, the students will gain optimal learning achievement. Based on the problems above, it is necessary to analyze the Anxiety level in integrated science learning process.

RESEARCH METHOD

This is a qualitative descriptive research. The subject of students of class VIII MTs Negeri 3 Tebo Regency. The total number of the subject was 40 whih were divided into two classes namely class VIII A and class VIII B.

The data were obtained through anxiety questionnaire which consisted of 20 statements which were analyzed by using Likert Scale, 5 answer choices consisting of Very Frequently (SS), Frequently (S), Rarely (J), Ocassionaly (KK), Never (TP). The average score of student anxiety level was then categorized by percentage as seen in table 1 below:

In addition, the data were also obtained from the interview and observation on the implementation of learning in the classroom. Symptoms of student's anxiety that were studied included the physical, cognitive and emotional aspects.

Results and Discussion

After tested the validity and reliability of the questionnaire, it was obtained the result that there were 20 statements declared valid and reliable to use. The results of the questionnaire showed that there were three aspects which have anxiety ranges between 50-60% with the details in table 2 below:

Table 2 above shows fluctuations in the percentage of anxiety levels on the physical, cognitive and emotional aspects. The students' anxiety level was categorized Medium category. The emotional anxiety aspect in class VIII B is at High category. Basically the relationship of anxiety level of students in the learning process is very important because if students are too anxious in the process of learning, the learning process cannot runs efficiently.

Some of the students which were interviewed said they felt anxious when they are asked to come to the front of the class. The anxiety makes the body tremble and the heart beat fast resulting in shame, nervousness, fear and tension. This is in line with the teachers' statement. Furthermore, the teachers stated that the things that cause the anxiety that were experienced by the students are they are not ready to receive the lesson, many students who play games when the teacher convey the material and they do not listen to the material explanation conveyed by the teacher. The teacher also stated that the student's attitude can be solved by themselves because the anxiety they feel comes from themselves.

What the students expressed was supported by the observations in the learning process. It seemed that the students were lack of attention in the learning process. It is indicated by some students who were chatting and playing games in the classroom, bored; saturated and drowsy. It is assumed that the problem caused by the lack of method and media used by the teacher, therefore, the students were lack of attention and not interested in the lesson. Basically, the teachers play an important role in creating an active and fun learning atmosphere. Fisher (1988) in Novita and Anita (2006) states that classroom teachers can help to reduce students' anxiety by creating an interesting classroom atmosphere, such as using humor, games and activities with a high level of relaxation. Students' anxiety can also be reduced by providing students with a sense of security, a relaxed but organized atmosphere, as well as a well-organized curriculum and schedule. Competitive class situations should also not be implemented. Basically, teachers are expected to apply a method of learning that can reduce students' anxiety levels. As a result, the students' behavior and achievement can be better. When the environment in which the student is in support (both at home and at school) they can get success and good academic experience (Cowden, 2010).

Grainger in Sri (2010, p. 13-14) suggests that individuals make decisions about their anxiety based on two factors namely internal factors and external factors. The internal factors are related to everything that comes from the inside of the student that supports learning, such as intelligence, talent, motor skills of the senses, and thinking scheme. External factors are everything that comes from outside of the students that condition them in learning. For example, experience, social environment, teaching-learning methods, learning strategies, learning facilities.

Basically, every individual is always trying to overcome anxiety by making adjustments to the causes of anxiety arise. This anxious reaction describes the subjective feelings that arise in the form of uncomfortable tension. Based on that, Burhnham in Sri (2010: p.13-14) who said that the source of anxiety would be more easily explored by examining three basic causes: 1) confidence that may be threatened by doubt about outward appearance and ability 2) our personal well-being may be threatened by uncertainty about the future, doubts in decision making and material concerns, 3) our well-being may be threatened by unsolved conflicts.

People with anxiety disorders generally often struggle with anxiety that is difficult to control. Their attempts to control fear usually fail and they suffer from a number of symptoms, both physical and psychological affecting social aspects, occupations and life functions in general. They are very easy helpless and often feel depressed and difficult to focus, sometimes they feel so great tension so that they can not to think. When this disorder arises in children, the anxiety and fear they feel is usually associated with school performance or athletic activity. They constantly feel worried, if they cannot do schoolwork, even they are worried about the situation when they are not evaluated. Most cases occur when the individual is at a young age.

Basically anxiety in low and moderate levels have a positive effect on student learning performance, one of which can increase learning motivation (Supri et al, 2013, p. 287), but it will contribute to learner if his/her target is significant. Because of this, families, school administrators and teachers should not be in ideas and expectations that will increase learning anxiety on learner (Karakaya et al, 2016, page 29). Some things that can be done by teacher to reduce the level of student learning anxiety is problem-based learning, discussing with students the test procedures that can be done by them, sharing knowledge and testing skills. Parents can teach their children the skills that needed to have control over the lesson. With this assistance both teachers and parents play a role in controlling the learning anxiety felt by students (Dobson, 2012: p. 32).

Conclusion

From the results and data analysis, it can be concluded that the level of anxiety students in the learning process in MTs Negeri 3 Kabupaten Tebo are categorized as moderate level. The factors of anxiety are the unpreparedness of students in receiving lessons and the lack of attention and interest of students in the learning process.

Social Anxiety on College Students

A familiar feeling of sweaty palms, an upturned stomach, racing thoughts, and increased heartbeat is what many people have experienced in their life time. This phenomenon usually occurs when we are put into situations that trigger our flight or fight responses. However, for those with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), also known as social phobia, these moments are experienced frequently on a daily basis with extreme intensities. SAD can be defined as an overwhelming anxiety with excessive and difficult to control worries or fears about social interactions or scrutiny (Falk & Leweke, 2017). The origins of the disorder may be a result from high exposures of either stressful and negative events that one has experienced from childhood or adulthood (National Institute of Mental Health, 2016). Previous history of anxiety or other mental disorders may also be a source of origin for SAD. It is a common anxiety disorder that can be found among 33% of college students (Brook & Willoughby 2015) and has a large impact on their academic and social performances. In this paper, it will address how SAD impacts college students and their dimensions of wellness.

Signs and symptoms of SAD are similar to the vivid imagery described in the introduction. According to the DSM-IV, typical symptoms would include difficulty in controlling worries, general avoidance, large restrictions with speaking in public, body dysmorphia, and intense nervousness (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). More physical symptoms would include intensive blushing, trembling, stiff muscles, increased heartbeats, dry throat or mouth, and dizziness (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). This disorder is often mistaken for the typical shyness, when in reality it is something more extreme. With the flight-or-fight responses, people with SAD also tend to have thoughts that revolve around the judgments by others. Due to these thoughts, they tend to feel very uncomfortable and in some cases, may even break down and have a panic attack. It impacts 50% of children, as early as 11 years of age, and 80% of those at age 20 (Stien & Stien, 2008). SAD is becoming an increasing and alarming mental disorder that must be addressed.

Therefore, getting the proper treatment for SAD is essential. For only 35% of those who have chronic SAD get the proper treatment for it (Falk & Leweke, 2017). With SAD alone, they are already at high risk for cardiovascular disease and disorders related to substance-use or depression (Falk & Leweke, 2017). Some of the most effective methods of treatment are psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, medications, antidepressants, beta-blockers, stress management techniques, and support groups (National Institute of Mental Health, 2016). By getting these treatments, they significantly prevent the previously mentioned risks and cope more efficiently with SAD. The intensity of their symptoms may be decreased as well since they have a source of treatment to help them pull through those social moments.

However, college students often do not use any of the given treatment methods. Based from the National Alliance on Mental Illnesses (2016), approximately 75% of the mental health conditions arise at age 24, leaving college students clueless in how to cope with them (Chiu & Graham, 2017). It is found that the most popular coping method among SAD diagnosed college students is through heavy drinking. In fact, it is reported about 48% of students who have SAD are also diagnosed with some type of alcohol disorder (Ham, 2009). A negative effect from this coping method is that it is a gateway to associate alcohol consumption or alcohol use disorder (AUD) (Sarah & Carrie, 2002). Alcohol is known to deteriorate one's important organs such as the liver, brain, heart, and pancreas. As stated earlier, it may also lead to other disorders such as, depression, eating disorder, or other anxiety-related disorders (Nordstrom, Goguen & Hiester, 2014). As a result, it shows how big of an impact that SAD has upon college students and their dimensions of wellness when it comes to self-coping.

For every action there is a particular reason, which applies to why college students with SAD confide to drinking alcohol. Majority of students use alcohol as a coping method because it helps relief their fears and uncomfortableness while they are out in public. They are lead to believe that by using alcohol and getting intoxicated, they can reduce the amount of anxiety they have for the time being (Book & Randall, 2002). Another reason may be due to the fact that around this age, many of their peers are also using alcohol and other forms of drugs. This causes them to be susceptible to peer-pressure and get the high possibility of addiction to any given drug. All of this ties into the smaller and detailed factors that many forget to consider when analyzing those with SAD, their environments, current situation and their group associations (Lindsay et al., 2011). Where alcohol outcome expectancies are considered and three other main reasons for drinking: negative coping, personal-intimates, or convivial. The anxiety causes students to have intensive symptoms when out and about in social settings, such as parties. Although alcohol is bad for their health and not the best coping method, it is not primarily their fault for falling into the addictive trap of the beverage.

With social anxiety, there are both positive and negative effects that intertwine with it.

The negative effects are associated with their ability to do well in school and establish relationships with others. Most of them will do whatever it takes to avoid situations where social interactions are required due to their fear from SAD (Lipton et al., 2016). They often avoiding social etiquettes such as direct eye contact and projection of the voice. Their thoughts when engaging in social events are increase in negativity as well, usually regarding about themselves (Pictet, 2014). Due to their tendencies to avoid social interactions, some college students may decide to skip classes in order to keep their SAD symptoms on a low level. Their grades may drop as a result, and their ability to achieve a aspired career is diminished. They are also unable to handle stress well and may result in using drugs or alcohol to cope with it (Lipton et al. 2016). It also impacts their self-imagery because they are constantly in fear of others judging them, leading them to be very self-conscious about their appearance and actions.

Moreover, negative effects involved with SAD include deterioration in the body's overall optimal health. It can cause frequent headaches, high irritability, fatigue, increase in blood pressure, and a sense of impending doom. Without a stable physical and mental health, the other dimensions of wellness deteriorate in response. This is why many students who have SAD have higher risks in obtaining depression because their state of mind is often thrown to such mentality. Similar to simply avoiding social interactions, they may avoid work areas or school entirely as well as social groups like friends or family. As mentioned before, due to the low dimension wellness levels, they are most likely to develop another disorder on top of the social anxiety they already have. Ultimately, it would lead them to a downwards spiraling path of unhealthy amount of stress and health problems, both physically and mentally.

On the contrary, a positive effect of social anxiety can be derived from a positive self image. With a positive self-image, they are able to form more positive biases when interacting with others or may even use their anxiety as a method of motivation (Pictet, 2014). They are also able to hold and express stronger emotions, exhibiting stellar empathy or sympathy to others. This results in a good trait that many seeks in potential friendships, enabling the student with SAD to overcome their weakness in establishing friendships. Another positive is that it allows the person to be more aware or alert since anxiety is the main embodiment of social anxiety. It triggers the flight-or-fight responses that enhances one's survival abilities in cases of endangerment. (Lee, Wadsworth & Hotopf, 2006). They also share strong attributes in leadership traits because of their tendency to consider all the possible outcomes. This derives from their ability of being constantly aware of what could make a bad turn. There are just as many pros as there is cons from having social anxiety, which can either benefit or limit a college student's ability to succeed.

On a national level, there is an organization dubbed The National Social Anxiety Center (NSAC) that provides services to treat those with SAD. In this organization, they provide psychotherapy, a therapy that involves talking about ones' mental disorder or emotions, across the United States in a multitude of regions. In psychotherapy, a strong relationship between the client and psychologist is made and work together through talking in order to resolve the issue that the client has (American Psychological Association, 2016). With NSAC, they specifically use cognitive-behavioral therapy, a type of psychotherapy. Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps an individual obtain new skills or strategies that help resolve inner-conflicts and achieve any set goal. The organization provides this therapy either individually or in groups, that both effectively help make a difference with SAD. It is a efficient way for college students to connect with those who have similar experiences with social anxiety and obtain more knowledge on how to cope with it.

Meanwhile on more local/state level, a community organization called NOSIRI Empowerment Center that helps those with social anxiety and their abilities in public speaking. It is located in Crofton and provides help to those who live in Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia and anyone who participates in their online classes. This organization helps supports one's confidence, self-esteem, and leadership skills as well through the formatting of counseling. It seems to have more variety than the national level organization and describes more in depth about their objective for each category that the person with SAD wants to improve on.

Social anxiety disorder has hindered many college students in both academics and their over all wellbeing. It impacts them by limiting their ability to create strong relationships and their interaction or participation in social situations. The fear that is created from the anxiety overwhelms their cognitive abilities, leaving them to suffer the mental and physical trauma effects of long-term flight-or-fight responses. They are driven to cope with SAD through heavy drinking that leads them to become diagnosed with alcohol disorders. Not only can they become double diagnosed with alcohol disorders, but health or other mental disorders too, such as depression and body dysmorphic disorder. Despite the large negatives, their social anxiety helps provide them with empathetic abilities, leadership skills, and a constant mind of awareness. Organizations such as NSAC and NOSIRI provide strong support systems for those who suffer from SAD. It is very efficient for college students because not only do they get a variety of therapies, they are able get quality take away methods in coping and meet others who also have SAD. A suggestion to help aid those who have social anxiety is to give them supportive and encouraging words, to coax them out from SAD symptoms while out in social events. More support groups should be available on the college students' campuses so they have somewhere to go if they begin to experience their anxiety symptoms, or if they need someone to talk to about it. Meanwhile, a suggestion to help prevent it is to expose both children and adolescents with positive and optimistic views that will help raise their self confidences. Exposure to social interactions and public speaking will help prevent the possibility of SAD developing when prevention occurs during their youth. In whole, SAD can be prevented with early prevention and has the potential to be coped with safely if given the right treatment methods. Even though SAD is shown to negatively impact a college student's well being and academics, they have their ways to over come the symptoms and triumph to the top.

My Struggle with Worry and Anxiety

Something I have struggled with ever since I was young is worry. I was homeschooled for a large portion of my life, and finally attended a brick-and-mortar school in 2nd grade. I would experience constant worry throughout the two years I was there. I would worry about almost anything and everything. It could be a test, something I said at recess, an event I am going to after school: it didn't matter what it was I worried. It got so bad in third grade that I worried to the point I was physically ill and was sent home vomiting. My worry had changed to what I believe was anxiety. Anxiety has three main components: emotional, physiological, and cognitive (Marques, 2018). For me, all three of these behaviors were present: worry being my cognitive response, my emotional being many things including fear, while my physiological was vomiting (along with sweating and shaking). My mother quickly removed me from school after 3rd grade and homeschooled me. I improved, but not because I had learned how to deal with my worry and anxiety but because I was removed from the situations.

For years afterword, I struggled with worry and anxiety. There were times I would again bring myself to the point of physical illness obsessing over something that had happened in the past or could happen in the future. I remember times when I would bring myself to the point of shaking, and hyperventilating. This lasted up until my junior year of high school, where I re-entered the brick-and-mortar school system. In that environment I had to learn to deal with this behavior, because if I didn't I knew that I wouldn't succeed in school. My old behaviors didn't go away completely it's just wasn't as extreme to where it impacted my daily life (therefore, no longer anxiety type symptoms vomiting, shaking, sweating). Today, this behavior is again becoming a problem. I now, again, get so worried my stomach knots up and often to deal with these emotions I use food. This is not the way I want my life to continue: it's damaging to me physically and psychologically. Eating junk food when I am worried leads to me gaining weight which effects my confidence and self-esteem. Not only that, but overall because I am unhealthy I feel terrible: tired, weak, and unable to focus like I should. Then all of this brings me to feel emotionally drained and unable to handle normal everyday interactions with the ease that I used to (not to mention I am now feeling a deep sadness throughout most of my days). I have had too many nights this past year where I have just broken down and been unable to function because my anxiety and worry got out of control, and I couldn't stand it any longer. As I get older, if I don't take care of this now, it's only going to get worse.

One thing that I discovered through this term was that I could relate to neuroticism at a certain level. In the book, there are two tables of The Five Factor Model traits and what they consist of and in the neuroticism row worry and anxiety is present. Neuroticism has quite a few different factors, including: being insecure, feeling inadequate, and being hypochondrial (Diener & Lucas, 2016, p. 372). Other factors include being depressed or getting angry (Diener & Lucas, 2016, p. 373). I experience many these factors in varying degrees (though anger isn't a true struggle for me) and they are often a part of my daily life. I tend to, respond emotionally to events that would not affect most people, and [my] reactions tend to be more intense than normal (Five factor test Result, n.d.). The worst out of all the behaviors associated with neuroticism is my worry. I worry about a lot of things in my life: from how I might have done on an assignment, to one comment I made to somebody three days ago and if they took it the wrong way. Worrying over these things can last for days. Worry isn't the only thing that I can relate to with neuroticism, but it's the one I am focusing on in my life right now. One site I found states how one who has neuroticism may experience worry due to a need for perfectionism and I think this may be the root of many of my struggles (Waude, 2017). My academic life is a big area where I struggle with perfectionism. I will often worry about how well I am going to do on something before the assignment/test has even been started. And it often is hard for me to accept in my daily life that: yes, I did do my best. This can be something that trips me up at work a lot, and it can make my day a miserable one. My mistakes are something I obsess over, when I do something successfully I can't enjoy it because I am concerned about what's next, and I often think that people won't like me if I'm not perfect enough or good enough for them (Tabaka, 2017). These are all examples of how I worry over my perfectionism.

I have often looked back on my worry and wondered how it came to be in the first place. It's the age-old nurture vs nature question. Was I born with a susceptibility to worry or is it something I learned from my experiences. As the psychologist Amy Przeworski, PhD states, Individuals inherit a predisposition to being an anxious person, [and] about 30 to 40 percent of the variability is related to genetic factors (Van, 2015). The textbook also states that, No single gene directly causes anxiety or panic, but our genes may make us more susceptible to anxiety and influence how our brains react to stress (Drabant et al., 2012; Gelernter & Stein, 2009; Smoller, Block, & Young, 2009) (Barlow & Ellard, 2016, 424). Although some of what I experience may be genetic, I believe much of my behavior is something I learned growing up. It is important when investigating a behavior I want to change, to look at where in my life it may have been learned. I can engage in autobiographical reasoning to aide in this search: this means that I look at my past and what I have gone through to create an explanation for the behavior or what I am doing with my life in the present or plan to in the future (McAdams, 2016, 412). I think that one huge contributor to this behavior is my mother's influence. She is a constant worrier and has been for as long as I can remember. When my father lost his job when I was in middle school, she verbally expressed her fear and panic about how we were going to have to give the dogs away, sell our clothes, and live on the streets. It wasn't uncommon for her to see the worst-case scenario in her panic, and often it was her children she told those to. This is one example, but most definitely not the only one I was privy to throughout my life. An experience in my childhood that may have also helped guide to me where I am today in my perfectionism is that my father very rarely expressed approval or pride in my sister and me. The only times I was praised by him was when I came home with a good grade on an assignment or did something particularly great and so that became something I craved. The better I did, the more praise I could acquire.

Knowing what experiences in my life has led me to worry the way I do doesn't necessarily change anything. It doesn't stop me from continuing such behavior, but paired with my motivation to change it, it can help me see which areas in my life I need to work on so that I don't worry like I have been. My perfectionism, as I have states above, is something that feeds into my worry. A good place to start in focusing on this behavior and training myself to better deal with it would be to remind myself that I am doing my best, and that is all I can do. What happens afterword will just happen, and it can be something I learn from or choose to wallow in. I worry so much about the what if's, when there is no guarantee any of those worries will come true. One way to combat this might be to understand and accept that worrying won't change anything, and maybe even repeat my worries repeatedly in my head or out loud until they don't hold the same power over me (Mann, n.d.). If self-treatment doesn't work, considering how long this behavior has continued, I could always investigate cognitive behavioral therapy. I'm not going to sugar coat it: even in the years my worrying wasn't horrendous, it still wasn't good. I would even say that it was never taken care of (even during my junior year as stated above), as much as the stress I was under wasn't so bad that my worrying and anxiety became chronic issues after high school. As I grow up, there is going to be more and more stressors in my life "they aren't things I can just hope will go away. I must deal with how I respond to those stressors, and I don't think I have ever truly done that. I can try to self-treat my behavior, but if I need help: there is no shame in that. I doubt I would ever need a psychotropic drug, but if it was considered what's best for me" I don't think I would say no. I am just at that point in my life where it has almost become too miserable to say no to treatment.

I think tomorrow may be a good day to start attempting to control how much anxiety I am experiencing. The reason I state tomorrow, is because this week is going to be the most stressful week of this term. I have a review from the state of Oregon coming up at work, I have plenty of assignments to submit, and all my bills are coming up. This week is the perfect time to do everything I can to calm myself down, accept things how they are, and move on. Breathing exercises may help me, by slowing my heart rate and sending oxygen to my brain, I am giving my mind time to come to terms with what is coming up. I can then repeat in my mind what it is I am worried about, and strive to accept the inevitably of the situation and that I can only do the best I can and learn from any mistakes I may make. If these exercises don't work, maybe I can look into yoga classes. If my symptoms don't subside after a length of time (within half a year), and I have looked up all the solutions I can, it may be time to talk to my doctor and schedule an appointment with a therapist in town.

I feel that Bradbury has a point here in which that society can turn on you at any point because you can never trust anyone because you never know what this person might be trying to do. The quote is trying to say that everyone is using everyone and moving on to the next and not care about that person. As if you were using a box of tissues, you use the tissue and move on to the next. This is important because it just comes to shows here society has come to, people don't just seem to care about others and are just trying to get something from them. This reveals that people in their society are really bad and use people for their being. I feel that this true in many cases, in most relationships today, some people don't care about their partner and just go after them for one thing weather it is money or popularity.

The quote is saying that this woman is getting the last feeling of her books before they burn them. This is important because it shows how important these books or any book in general is important to her because she is ready to be killed alongside with the books.This reveals that books are really important to people and that a books importance is not the physical book itself but what the book means to a person. I feel that books must really be something special because someone is willing to die for their books. The quote is trying to say that Beatty was concerned about Montag, he wan not worried about Montag but he felt something off about him. This is important because it starts to tell us about what Montag was thinking about, which was the fire last week. This reveals that Montag was worried about the man. Also, he starts to wonder if the firehouse has always been the way it was right now. This makes me feel that when you are worried or thinking about something, there is alway someone that is curious or wondering about what you are thinking about because in this quote Beatty knows that there is something off about Montag.

The quote is trying to say that when at times you want to be left alone, it is not always the best choice because you need to be pushed or bothered in his case to be able to live life to the fullest and care about yourself and the world around you. This is important because Montag is telling Mildred that she is not living her life to the fullest. She believes that her life is great because that is the way the government in their society wants them to live. Mental Health Issues in the Great Gatsby

The book The Great Gatsby by f. Scott Fitzgerald is a book that is famous for many reasons. Firstly, we know that it's famous because it is still being used in the educational system of today. I believe this book is still being read today because of the lasting impact that resonates with the reader. Personally, I can relate to this book through the character jay Gatsby. Throughout The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I believe that Jay Gatsby is described to try really hard to make others happy, his failing to do so is what eventually leads to his depression. His depression and lack of guidance through his life is what indirectly leads to his death.

In this book Gatsby tries hard to please and make Daisy happy. Throughout the book he does whatever he can do in his power to get her to like him. When Gatsby first meets Daisy she is really fond of him because he was being himself. Once Gatsby goes away for war, he loses sight of who Daisy is and who he actually is. The longer Gatsby is away, the more his perception of Daisy and their relationship gets further distorted. When Gatsby finally gets a chance to be with Daisy again, he realizes how different his idea of her has changed and over projected their relationship to be. Since Daisy, in the beginning, actually liked Gatsby for who he was and now Gatsby has turned lonely. The only thing Gatsby can think of to make Daisy happy is wealth. He believes if he can have a lot of money, this will win her back and restore their relationship as it was five years prior. as a result of this, Gatsby is desperate to obtain a lot of money. This is why he ends up having to turn to smuggling to try to acquire money. Smuggling does give Gatsby the money that he hopes for, but it is not enough for Daisy to like him again.
This is quite similar to how I view our society today. The people in which I have a close connection/relationship to are always trying to make others happy.

In the book, Gatsby works very hard to get Daisy's approval/trying to make her happy. He is not successful in doing this. Many people, in my opinion, are often trying to get the attention/approval/praise that they seem hungry for. I honestly see this attitude as a thirst/hunger. Eating is a necessity and from what I've seen, the depth in which people will go to get the approval of others is substansial. If/when these people don't get the approval of others, much like Jay Gatsby, they get depressed. Once Gatsby got depressed about losing Daisy, he turned to money to try to make himself happy. Like many other people who are smuggling money seems to be the pathway to happiness, but as we found out with Mr. Gatsby money certainly does not buy happiness. after Gatsby realizes he lost Daisy for a second time, I believe that's the turning point of his depression, after Daisy is gone, he doesn't have another purpose in his life. All the time he had to spend in his life, he spent on trying to get Daisy to love him. Since he is unsuccessful, he believes he has no self worth and no real reason to live, so I believe his death was a direct result of this.

Mental health is a big topic of general interest in today's society, especially within the teen population. approximately 20% of teenagers experience or have experienced depression and its symptoms by the time they reach 20. This has a great effect on more than just that twenty percent of people. There are many people that have to help these people struggling with depression get through their struggles every day. I am personally not affected by depression, but I have several friends that turn to me when they need help. The idea of helping others through their struggles is one of the more prominent things that I think about on a daily basis.

I believe there are people my age that don't know the true causation of depression and truly don't comprehend what kind of effect depression has on people. Because of this people are underestimating the power depression has on people. I have personally felt the effects of depression through the loss of my brother's best friend. He took his own life because he felt like his voice was being unheard. This is not an uncommon thought through this age of injustice and political griping. This is an age where political candidates are more worried about exploiting every single blemish of someone's life, rather than the topics that actually concern the people that are voting for them such as mental health.

Although I'm not saying everyone isn't caring or understanding. But I have seen enough comments and sayings that I know that there is enough of a problem looming around this topic that there is something that needs to be done about mental health among the human population in general, but specifically the teenage population. If politicians and the general public focused more on stabilizing the overarching problem/epidemic of mental health issues, I believe the USA and the earth overall would be much better place.

A Worldfamous the Great Gatsby Book

The Great Gatsby, written in 1925 by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. It has been considered a classic for his symbolism and themes. It is heavily centered on social classes, social constructs, and the American dream. It is a story of undying hope and love for another. That ends in tragedy. Many people consider The Great Gatsby to be a must read for high school students.

James Gatz, better known as Jay Gatsby, grew up in North Dakota, to Henry Gatz. Jay Gatsby is a hopeless romantic who held out his hope for Daisy for years, and through many struggles. Gatsby tried to return from war just to be with Daisy and he spent all the money he had trying to find her. This is what Nick meant when he said it was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as i have never found in another person. (pg 2). This hope is what caused Gatsby to get rich by helping organized crime. This hope is what led him to New York, led him to buying a house, and incentivized him to throw extravagant parties. All in the hope of attracting Daisy's attention. Gatsby eventually resorted to asking Nick for help to achieve. After all these years his hope was finally within reach. Only to be ripped away again by an unfortunate accident, and killed the next day. Gatsby is represented by green, black, brown, purple, and gold. Green for his hope, black for his mysterious life and eventual death, brown for the poverty he lived in, purple for wealth, and gold for the extravagance of his actions.

Meyer Wolfsheim is a jewish, middle aged man. He is also a prominent member in organized crime and a business partner with Gatsby. Meyer helped Gatsby make his fortune when Gatsby returned from the war and ended up penniless. Meyer did not do this out of the kindness of his heart however. He merely used Gatsby to make more gonnegtions. We can tell that Meyer has Gatsby find new people because of the interaction when Nick first meets Meyer, Meyer says to Nick I understand you're looking for a business gonnegtion. (pg 70). Only for Gatsby to answer Oh, no, this isn't the man. (pg 71). Meyer likely doesn't care much for Gatsby, supported by the fact he doesn't attend Gatsby's funeral. I would say he most closely represents the negative side of green, being greedy and money-driven.

Tom Buchanan, an old money, ex-sports player. He has a short temper, he's prone to violence, rather arrogant, a frequent liar, an alcoholic, a racist, and a cheater to boot. Tom is almost the exact representation of a corrupt aristocrat. His obscene wealth and horrible character traits making him one of the least ideal people to be around. However, Daisy was unlucky enough to marry him. Tom goes on to run around with other women, one of which being Myrtle. Whose nose gets broken in an argument with Tom. Everyone around Tom is likely to be hurt by him. I would assign purple and red. For his arrogance, wealth, and temper.

Daisy Buchanan, wife to Tom, cousin to Nick, and an old acquaintance to Gatsby. Daisy doesn't care about anyone around her. She doesn't care for her daughter, having her raised by a nurse. She doesn't care for Tom, she even went and cheated on him. Nor does she care for Gatsby, she didn't even bother to send a flower to his funeral. There is the possibility that Tom prevented her from sending a flower. However I find this unlikely because she went so far as to cheat on Tom in the first place. If she cared enough she would have taken the risk to send flowers. I would give Daisy black for her evil ways.

Jordan Baker is a friend of Daisy's and eventual girlfriend of Nick's. She's also a competitive golfer and independent woman. Representing the change in women that happened around the 1920's. Brought about by the ability to vote and find their own work. Jordan is also careless, reckless, and self-centered. She drives terribly but doesn't fear and accident because it takes two to make an accident. After the death of Gatsby and she talks to Nick again she appears to no longer care, claiming to be engaged to another man. I would give Jordan orange, for her fiery new woman spirit.

Nick Carraway is the narrator of The Great Gatsby. He was a soldier in WWI, graduated from Yale, and them moved to New York to become a bond man. Nick tends to reserve his judgement until after everything is said and done. He describes himself as the most honest person he knows. Which seems quite true given the crowd he socializes with. Nick, like Gatsby, grew up in the West. Which is to say, an entirely different world than the East. Which is probably the source of his different values. He becomes friends with most of the other characters mentioned in the book. Nick also seems like he is the most saddened by Gatsby's death, other than Gatsby's father. I would assign blue to Nick, not only for the sadness he feels at the death of his friend, but also for the loyalty and wisdom he shows throughout the book.

George Wilson is the owner of a gas station in an area known as the Valley of Ashes. He has stuck up a business deal with Tom. To buy Tom's car and resell it for a profit. George became sick when he learned Myrtle cheated on him and devastated when he learned Myrtle was killed. Becoming a husk of a man he was days before. He became obsessed to the point of murder for the death of his wife, killing Gatsby because he believed he was the perpetrator. Unfortunately, he killed the wrong person in the end as Daisy was the one who was driving, not Gatsby. I would assign blue to George, for the crushing sadness he felt.

Myrtle Wilson, George's wife, and Tom's mistress. She is a victim of Tom's violence. Getting her nose broken just by saying Daisy's name. She seems to be unable to stand being married to George, backed up by the quote Neither of them can stand the person they're married to. (pg 33). Tom can't stand being married to Daisy and Myrtle can't stand being married to George. Myrtle was misled by Tom to believe that Daisy was a Catholic and therefore against divorce. Myrtle tried to flag down the car that hit her because she believed Tom was in it. So she likely spent her last few moments believing Tom had just killed her. Myrtle represents green and red to me. Green for the greed of yearning to marry Tom and red for the anger she felt towards Daisy.

In the end, most of these characters suffered at the hands of the others. This can be due to their harmful and dishonest nature. Or to the unfriendly society of the upper class. Or any other culmination of the negative aspects of society associated with the upper class. What may just be the worst part of this tragedy is that it is entirely avoidable. If they were only more honest or less old fashioned more characters would probably have ended up happy.

Women in the 1920s

The first radio station, the Prohibition, and women gaining suffrage were all a part of the new emerging era - the roaring twenties. Many of these changes brought a new ideas about the female role in society allowing women to wear shorter skirts, cut their hair into bobs, and began driving. Women even began to enter the work force in small numbers with about a twenty five percent increase in fields such as teaching, social working, and nursing as a result of world war one. During the twenties just a few of the new female roles were being athletes, upper class charmers, and women who exploited men for money as represented in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Although Daisy, Jordan, and Myrtle were all progressive females in the twenties, Daisy is wealthily, charming and tradition holding as, Jordan is an athlete, flapper and independent woman, as Myrtle is lower class, searching for wealth, and is sensual.

Daisy Buchanan is a perfect example of upper class women in the 1920s as she is extremely charming, wealthily, and holds aristocratic values. A key example of Daisy`s wealth is when Nick is talking to Gatsby and Nick says It was full of money that was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbals` song of it. High in a white palace the kings daughter, the golden girl..[ pg. 120] Nick is almost telling Gatsby that Daisy already has money and simply having large amounts of money is important to Daisy, but is not extremely impressive as her entire life she has lived in an old money family, inheriting their social status. He uses a white palace to show the money she had because in old European fashion and society if you had white clothes it was a symbol of royalty as the clothes could easily become dirty. This comments that she is living with desirable upper class family situation that would allow her the finer things in life and an extremely high social status that many women had to marry to gain.

During the 1920s being from a wealthy family or gaining wealth was extremely desirable to the American Population making Daisy not only in the top one percent of the population but extremely charming to other characters in the book. An example of this charm is when Nick first describes Daisy as Her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it, bright eyes and a bright passionate mouth, but there was an excitement in her voice that men who cared for her found difficult to forget: [pg 9] Daisy very much plays into this desire, of men, in the 1920s because she doesn't work causing her to stay home, she is extremely beautiful, and she holds traditions of old money appealing to wealthy men. During the 1920s and eras before many families wanted to keep old money in the family causing men, from old money, to marry women from old money to maintain their wealth status and keep old money with old money. Daisy Buchanan overall was a rendition of the 1920s American dream that included traits like charm, wealth, and values of money.

Jordan Baker is a new emerging kind of 1920s women that were becoming independent, athletes, and flappers. An example of her being an flapper is She was incurably dishonest. She wasn't able to endure being at a disadvantage and, given this unwillingness.. [pg 58] Jordan embodies this new idea of the flapper in a few ways.Women who were seen as flappers were seen as party girls which is the only reason that Jordan knows Gatsby, as we learned form the original meeting of Nick and her. Flappers brought the fresh new idea that women could lie and cheat like men to get ahead in life. An example of Jordans independence is When I had finished she told me she was engaged to another man.[pg177] Jordan has moved on from nick and potentially found a new man, even though Nick believes this isn't true.

This comment shows that Jordan didn't need to be married or codependent on someone because if she needed that she would have just married some wealthy man to just to be a wife. She is different than other women of her time, she is a trailblazer for a new era of independent women that don't have the overwhelming feeling that the end goal in life is to marry a rich man and play house wife their entire lives. An example of Jordan being an athlete is At her first big Golf tournament there was a row that nearly reached the newspapers - a suggestion that she had moved her ball from a bad lie in the semi-final round.[pg 57] Nick specially remembers this story while thinking about who Jordan was as an athlete and a person. In the early 1900s women began to choose being professional athletes like, Margaret Abott who in 1900 was the first woman to win a Gold metal. This began a key idea in later feminist movements that women didn't have to be teachers or librarians they could be anything including athletes. Jordan baker overall is a groundbreaking and new kind a women we see in the 1920s.

Myrtle Wilson is very different from Jordan and Daisy because she is not only lower class but she uses men intentionally of rather money and she is described in a sensual way. An example of her use of men for money is when myrtle says I married him because I thought he was a gentleman. I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn't fit to lick my shoe. [pg 34] Myrtle originally only marries her husband under the assumption that he is extremely wealthy and she later realizes that he was poor. Myrtle saying he wasn't fit to lick my shoe shows that she finds out he is beneath her in society and possibly lead her to believe that there was more money.

Myrtle is like many women in the 1920s who are forced to move up the social latter by marrying a wealthy man and unfortunate for myrtle she married the wrong man. An example of myrtles sensual features is when she is hit by the car and it says her left breast was winging loose like a flap and there was no need to listen for a heart beat[pg 137] Myrtles main feature was her sexuality as when she died it was figuratively, and literally, ripped away from her taking her life away. She could have been killed in anyway but she was killed in a way that took away the one thing that was her fault and caused her to cheat with Tom. You could even say that Myrtles sexuality being ripped from her in the end was a way for God to punish her as he has seen all the lying and cheating she has done behind her husbands back. Myrtle Wilson has many attributes that contribute to her character but in the end her greed for wealth and sensualness that end up killing her.

Myrtle, Jordan, and Daisy are all very different characters in nature and personalities but they have many things in common. One thing they have in common is the idea that they all represent new ideas of what women in the 1920s began to change into. Also all three women at some point are involved with a man that doesn't stay in their life. Daisy was involved with Gatsby, Jordan with Nick, and Myrtle with Tom. Finally all three women are extremely careless and are willing to lie not only to themselves but too others in order to maintain their relationship and wealth status in the book. Even though the gender roles began to change in the 1920s women still cheated and lied their way out of many situations.

Characteristic of Tom Buchanan

Indirect characterization is when the author reveals knowledge about characters through their words, thoughts, actions and appearances. When reading a book or watching a movie you can usually interpret what type of character you are introduced to, based on the character behaviors, actions and reactions in different settings. It is very important to perceive the characters personalities' and behaviors throughout the novel. This will help you understand the novel and each characters different meaning to contribute. Fitzgerald uses indirect characterization in The Great Gatsby to develop Toms characters in the novel.

In the Great Gatsby it is implied that Tom have a problem with races and societal fear of lesser races overcoming his white, nordic race. In the story Tom states it's up to us (white people) , who are the dominant race, to watch out or they will have control of things (page 19). This statement informs the reader how racist Tom is, because he believes his race is somehow superior to others. An example of this is when he mentions in the story the idea is if we don't look out the white race will be - will be utterly submerged. This quote shows us that Tom thinks the equality of other races is an attack on his race.

Another characterization of Tom's character, is his unfaithfulness toward his wife, Daisy. Tom does not care about Daisy's feelings or what she thinks about his infidelity. In Chapter 7 Tom states, And what's more, I love Daisy too. Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time. This proves that Tom is a cheater and he has no respect toward Daisy. The tone of his voice show how careless he is about Daisy's feelings; he treats her as if cheating is okay. An example of this is when Tom and Daisy were at a restaurant and Tom did nothing but embarrass Daisy. The fact that he had [a mistress] was insisted upon wherever he was known. His acquaintances resents the fact that he turned up in popular restaurants with her and, leaving her at a table sauntered about, sharing with whomever he knew (Chapter 2). Here, it shows the audience that Tom has no regard for Daisy because he embarrass her by rubbing his mistress in her face.

Finally, Tom is arrogant. Whenever there's a moment to use his arrogance; he behave as if he's better than everyone else. A time when Tom utilizes his arrogance, is when Tom gives Nick a tour of his house and mentions how nice of a place he has. In Chapter 1 Tom states I've got a nice place here, this here shows the reader how much of a narcissistic personality Tom reveals. He compliments his own home as if he's trying to prove how much money he has, when it is quite obvious that he's wealthy. An example of this is when Tom states I'd be a damn fool to live anywhere else. This tells us that Tom thinks the East Egg is better than the West Egg because East Egg been had money, while the West Egg have to work for theirs.

In conclusion, Tom is an arrogant, racist, disloyal man who has no respect for women or anyone else.

Comparison of Faulkner’s Caddy and Fitzgerald’s Daisy

In the Sound and the Fury and the Great Gatsby, William Faulkner and F. Scott Fitzgerald interweave the themes of community, family, past, and present, all of which shape the interactions of the men and women. Although the main roles in both of these novels are occupied by men, both Faulkner and Fitzgerald seem particularly interested in the provocations and drives of females. Fitzgerald presents Daisy, wife to Tom Buchanan, a showoff from an aristocratic family who gives Daisy a wealthy lifestyle and who helps her maintain her image of properness. Caddy, Faulkner’s creation, on the other hand, is a young woman who recognizes the hypocrisy and phoniness of the society around her and chooses to reject it. Neither Daisy nor Caddy tell their own story; rather the reader perceives them through the eyes of others, notably the men.

The two women, despite living in seemingly very different environments, share similarities and differences in their views on promiscuity, reputation and marital relationships. These women do drive the stories, but their attempt to exercise free will leads to their personal destruction. The presence of Caddy and Daisy are central, but they are trapped by their destructive connections to the men and the patriarchal society around them.

Daisy, the romanticized fantasy woman for Gatsby and the conveniently beautiful and socially skilled wife of Tom Buchanan, personifies how Daisy’s sexuality stimulates desires in men and often leads to destruction. Daisy Fay captivated Gatsby when he was a soldier ready to leave for war. They met in Louisville where Daisy was debutante who was enchanted by a man in uniform. At the time, she was unaware that Gatsby was the son of poor farmers and that “his parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people – his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all”(64). Although they had come from from such vastly different backgrounds Daisy and Gatsby sleep together before he leave for war.

On the last afternoon before he went abroad, he sat with Daisy in his arms for a long, silent time. It was a cold fall day, with fire in the room and her cheeks flushed. Now and then she moved and he changed his arm a little, and once he kissed her dark shining hair. The afternoon had made them tranquil for a while, as if to give them a deep memory for the long parting the next day promised. They had never been closer in their month of love, nor communicated more profoundly one with another, than when she brushed silent lips against his coat’s shoulder or when he touched the end of her fingers, gently, as though she were asleep.(150)

That act to Gatsby, was the thing that seal the deal between the two. It is also an example of Daisy’s willingness to accept Gatsby’s physical attentions without understanding very much about who he was or what his expectations would lead to. This is also an example of Daisy showing that she is willing to be the object of desire, and is not as innocent as she appears. Although she promised Gatsby she would return to him, upon his return, he discovered Daisy had already married Tom Buchanan, a man from an affluent family. Daisy’s social status dictated this choice and it is understandable that she would not push back against her family's expectations. This loss was the most significant in Gatsby life and continued to feed his obsession for Daisy.

From the very beginning he believed she was everything he had ever wanted. Though Daisy does does marry Tom after Gatsby leaves, there is evidence that she did have real feelings for him at one point, but it was her family which ultimately destroyed her fairy tale. Jordan reveals to Nick that “wild rumors were circulating about her – how her mother had found her packing her bag one winter night to go to New York and say goodbye to a soldier who was going overseas. She was effectually prevented, but she wasn’t on speaking terms with her family for several weeks. After that she didn’t play around with the soldiers anymore…” (75). Although she eventually succumbs to the expectation of what a woman is supposed to do and love, it is still an internal battle for her. “She groped around in a wastebasket she had with her on the bed and pulled out the string of pearls. “Take ’em down-stairs and give ’em back to whoever they belong to. Tell ’em all Daisy’s change’ her mine. Say: ‘Daisy’s change’ her mine!’”( 76). In this passage Daisy has to suppress her true emotions, and reject her impulse for independence, in order to do what is expected of her. Daisy can only demonstrate her rebellion by throwing away a string of pearls.

Unlike Daisy, Caddy is a life force, who refuses to curb her high spirits and spontaneity. Caddy refuses to suppress her sexuality even though in Faulkner’s Southern white world, women of Caddy’s station in life are not expected to have personal desires and passions. The reader struggles to understand her because she can only be viewed through the eyes of the male characters, and is allowed not even one small section of her own in the novel. This does not mean Caddy is unimportant to the novel. In fact Caddy is the central point in the Benjy and Quentin section, and in the Jason section her daughter is the main focus which inadvertently is her basically.

Caddy Compson is not the typical Southern belle. She is full of desire and hopeful freedom. From the beginning, it is evident that Caddy is not not one to follow the rules. Even as a child, she had a sense of curiosity and daring, which is shown as she recklessly climbs a tree on their property. Caddy’s desire to climb the tree and actually doing so, is an example of how she refuses to accept the societal norms in this place and time. To her brothers, her devilish behavior is an example of her wickedness. Her brothers yell, “you, Satan”(29) to try to get her to come down. Versh warns Caddy that her Mother will get angry if her dress is wet, “Your mommer going to whip you for getting your dress wet.” (2) However, Caddy is headstrong and does not listen to what Versh or her mother think or say. She declares her mother is not “ going to do any such thing." This scene takes place when Caddy is still very young, but it foreshadows the adolescent and womanly attitude that she will gradually develop. She refuses to be manipulated or corralled by anyone including her mother or the patriarchal structure that tries to close in on her.

Caddy is the main focus of all three sections of the book, and she is the only person in the book that really displays any true morals or compassion. The family focuses on what they view as her indecent behavior, but the way that she treats Benji, for example, stooping to his level to talk to him, reflects her human decency and actually sets her apart from the others. “ With Benji, Caddy is constantly gentel, loving, and teaching.”( Language and Act: Caddy Compson, pg. 50)

Similarly, telling her mother that Benji’s name does matter proves that she is, in fact, a good person. For Benji, she is really the most important person in his life, most likely the only one that cares for him other than Disley. She is constantly trying to make her brother happy, while her brother Quenten does not exactly hurt Benji, he really does not do anything specifically nice either. As for Jason he really does nothing good for Benji at all, in fact Jason teases him.

Although its is evident that Caddy has all these admirable qualities, all of that goodness is masked by her overwhemiling association with sextuality and that she does not follow the social norms of the South. In the novel, Faulkner tries to suggest that the social code of the South at fault for Caddy’s behavior. The question though of responsibility does arise when thinking about Caddy because though the eyes of her brothers she can be seen as irresponsible when it comes to herself and her body, since she sleeps around . On the other hand, when she finds out that she is pregnant, she makes the decision to marry Herbert, even though she knows that he is not the father. She doesn't care about ensuring pure blood lines. However when it comes to her child, she doesn't want her daughter to be stigmatised. This is an instance in which Caddy does not put her personal wishes ahead of the wellbeing of someone that she loves. Caddy’s promiscuity is a response to the hypocrisy of the Compson family pride and her assertion for independence. Nevertheless, she was willing to sacrifice her own values for the sake of her daughter, once again demonstrating that her capacity for love is greater than any of the other Compson’s.

Both Daisy and Caddy are a product of their time. Both women are alluring to men, and discover that their sexuality is their only currency. Therefore, they use it in order to maintain their sense of self. In the end, Daisy succumbs to her desire to maintain her status and privilege at all costs. Caddy, on the other hand, rejects what is expected of her and runs away even though it means abandoning her daughter and giving up any semblance of decorum. In the last analysis, the patriarchy wins in both worlds.

The True Identity of Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is not the type of 1920s novel that encompasses the American Dream and the glitz and glam that came along with it. Yes, there are multiple examples of fancy cars and extravagant parties which fit the 20s aspect of the book, but this is not a traditional the 1920s were so amazing! novel. It shows the true good, bad, and ugly that usually are absent from other books written at the time. F. Scott Fitzgerald took a different approach to this era when he wrote his famous novel The Great Gatsby when he decided that the main character, Jay Gatsby, would be a rich man that made his way out of poverty by bootlegging. The main theme that emerges throughout the plot of the story which revolves around Gatsby is that it is impossible to ever wipe out the identity that you were born with, no matter how hard you try to erase it.

The main character of the book that the story follows is Jay Gatsby. He is a mysterious rich man who throws colossal, extravagant parties each weekend, but never shows his face at any of them. The book's narrator, Nick, lives next to Gatsby's mansion and watches the parties from his window each weekend. When he finally decides to attend one of Gatsby's parties with Daisy's friend Jordan, he does not understand why Gatsby is throwing such lavish parties that upper class New Yorkers travel to attend each weekend, when he is nowhere to be seen. Gatsby eventually introduces himself and him and Nick eventually become friends. Nick had heard many rumors that were constantly floating around New York about how Gatsby got his money, so he was very curious. Nick ended up learning that Gatsby came from a poor family and was born with the name Jay Gatz, but with the help of Dan Cody learned how to act rich. Even though Gatsby was great at pretending to be born rich and faking that he was used to living the lavish and money-filled lifestyle that he has adopted, Fitzgerald makes it clear to the reader that Gatsby is putting up this front and truly is just James Gatz at the core and that identity won't ever leave him.

While Jordan and Nick wandered around Gatsby's house, they came across a gigantic room filled floor to ceiling with books. They are quick to notice another man who is described as a stout, middle aged man, with enormous owl-eyed spectacles is along one of the walls of Gatsby's library examining Gatsby's books. He notices that Gatsby's didn't cut the pages of his books. Back when this book was written, you had to physically cut open a book in order to be able to crack open the book and begin flipping through the pages and in the end get to actually reading it. The rumors that went around were that Gatsby was well read and a very intelligent man, however this was just a front put up by him to seem like he belonged in the upper class. By seeing that the books were uncut, we as the readers find out that he is faking the whole I've always been rich act, but won't be able to keep it up forever because his true identity as a man who is not as well read as he is made out to be and most likely not as smart as he wants others to believe is revealed. The books in Gatsby's library essentially reveal to the readers that Gatsby is a fraud.

Although Gatsby has done a decent job at keeping up his identity and persona that he has created, his uncut books prove that he is unable to ever keep up with trying to keep up going along with the fasade he has tried so hard to put up. Additionally, to further back up this theme that is prevalent throughout the book, Gatsby's true identity is revealed when Tom finally tells his wife Daisy who was previously in love with Jay Gatsby (note: not James Gatz) that all of Gatsby's money was produced by bootlegging. In this particular scene, another aspect of Gatsby's true identity of coming up from a poor family is revealed because nobody who is born rich, or people that have old money which Gatsby pretends to have inherited, is a bootlegger. At the end of the day, as the book progresses Gatsby is unable to keep more and more of his identity hidden until every single aspect of his upbringing and true identity are revealed. By writing this book, Fitzgerald ends up producing the theme that people cannot hide their true identities, regardless of how hard they try to cover their tracks and put up a fasade.

Death of a Salesman and Gatsby

Stories can be told in many ways while still saying the same thing. Some are plays, some are novels, some are poems. Two such examples of stories which make similar statements in opposite modes of telling are those of a salesman's death and a man named Gatsby. Death of a Salesman is more confined to reality than The Great Gatsby in its strangeness of characters and in the structure in which the story is formed.

The characters, such as Gatsby and Daisy, of The Great Gatsby are unrealistic ideas of themselves which easily fall apart or disappear entirely. Near the start of the novel, Gatsby vanished, leaving Nick alone in the unquiet darkness (Fitzgerald 21). Just before this, he'd been trembling as though he felt that he might stop existing altogether, foreshadowing the near future of himself. Gatsby acted like little more than an apparition, the ghost of long-forgotten idea, shimmering in and out of space and time. Later, when he finally gets close to his goal, he suddenly changes and glows (Fitzgerald 89). Gatsby goes through another sudden change in who he is much like when he named himself Gatsby in the first place. Gatsby chooses a different persona to take his place whenever he sees fit. These machinations, eventually, fall apart. Gatsby dies, and Daisy, his supposed love who said she loved him, left and left no address (Fitzgerald 164). Both Gatsby and Daisy entirely disappeared, leaving just a trace in the memories of those who knew them, and not even much of a trace of who they really were.

The characters of Death of a Salesman, unlike those of The Great Gatsby, are grounded in reality and Willy's psychosis is the only thing that makes events seem unrealistic. When Willy plays a game of cards with Charley, he says that he's getting awfully tired and uses the name Ben instead of Charley with Charley asking if he was just called Ben (Miller 44). That may have sounded a bit convoluted as it was meant to be. Willy does not quite know what is really happening and what is not while Charley is fully lucid. Willy tries to fix the situation by saying that Charley reminded [him] of [his] brother Ben (Miller 45). They try to continue playing and talking but Willy keeps getting distracted by his brother who isn't there until Charley is fed up and leaves. Charley does not have time for his delusional friend; he would like to continue to live in the real world. When Willy talks to Ben, who still is not there, again, and Linda comes along, she asks, did you have some cheese (Miller 52). While Willey is off in his fantasy, his wife is thinking of something so mundane as a dairy product. She is not worrying about a hardly real brother walking into a jungle, and later coming out rich, just whether or not her husband ate cheese. When Willy loses his job, he talks about how he once averaged a hundred and seventy dollars a week in commissions in 1928 (Miller 82). His boss tries to get Willey back to reality and tell him he never did that but Willy would not listen. Willy stays in his far-off version of reality while everyone else stays earthbound.

The Great Gatsby is written in a loose manner which makes the story less constrained to the real world. The narrator uses broad statements about times, such as talking about his younger and more vulnerable years (Fitzgerald 1) in the beginning, instead of starting at any specific point in time. He is not placed at specific moments, just ideas of, and allusions to, moments. Nick is unconcerned with when things happened so much as that they did. He also does not stay entirely consistent with how he tells the story. In the beginning, he almost entirely just describes things happening along with metaphors for those things. Later, he starts to add himself to the story he tells, giving himself opinions of everything and words for him to speak. He only starts to voice opinions when Gatsby thinks he has achieved his goal, and then just to tell Gatsby that he is acting like a little boy(Fitzgerald 88). The addition of such opinions adds bias to the story, making it even less bound to any truth of reality than before. This story is all in the past tense, meaning it relies on memory to be told. Nick can say that he remembers that whole story (Fitzgerald 163) but people are often more sure about such things than they should be, thinking they remember more than they do.

Death of a Salesman is written in a way that makes it deeply confined to reality. This story is a play, written with specific stage directions for how everyone should speak and where everything should be. One such stage direction, at the very beginning, talks of towering, angular shapes (Miller 11). Such strict geometry is something that anchors things down to Earth even more clearly than the geometry of curved spacetime that literally holds things in place on Earth. The fact that this story is a play, in itself, also helps hold it to reality. The characters are all meant to be played by real people on a physical stage. They are not meant to stay as words on a page; they are meant to come alive in the real world. This may have happened with The Great Gatsby in its becoming a movie but that story had to be adapted to that form; it was not written like that. Death of a Salesman is in the present tense, not relying on any memory to be told. Everything that happens is considered to be happening right now even though Willy may see things a bit differently than that.

Death of a Salesman and The Great Gatsby are two stories told in highly different ways that exemplify how different the stories are. They may both deal with death, The American Dream, and the recreation of the self but the stories get these themes across through perpendicular means. In the end, it does not matter how real a story is, especially a story of morals and ideals. Such a story simply needs to get its point across to you however the author deems necessary.

Symbols in the Great Gatsby

A symbol is a sound, object, or image that is often used by authors to represent beliefs or ideas that they want the readers to understand. In The Great Gatsby, author F. Scott Fitzgerald uses symbols to portray the kind of person Gatsby is and what would eventually lead to his end. Jay Gatsby is a rich man who obsesses over materialistic things in life and is trying to win young Daisy's heart. The symbols Fitzgerald uses in his novel are the green light and Gatsby's flashy, luxurious car to show what really mattered to Gatsby and how it affected him.


Fitzgerald uses Nick, Gatsby's friend, to describe Gatsby indirectly by commenting on his car. Gatsby shows up at Nick's house with his car, telling him they are going to grab some lunch together. Nick looks at Gatsby's car with admiration and describes it saying it is a ''rich cream color, bright with nickel, swollen here and there in its monstrous length with triumphant hat boxes and supper-boxes and tool-boxes...'' (Fitzgerald 64).

Based on Nick's description of Gatsby's car, it is clear that Gatsby's Rolls Royce is meant to be a very showy and very over the top. Nick describes Gatsby's car as this monstrous thing that is very flashy. He says it in a negative connotation with his word choices. He uses the words swollen, almost as if to describe Gatsby for being as someone who is puffed up and materialistic. That same day, Nick goes on to say that the car is, terraced with a labyrinth of windshields that mirrored a dozen suns (Fitzgerald 68). The fact that Gatsby's car windshields were mirrored and reflective in the sun, represents Gatsby's own hidden secret identity. During the 1920's, the car you owned, represented where you stand on the social status. Cars were still new and just introduced to the world. If you had a nice car, it showed that you were living the American Dream. Gatsby hid behind his large windshield, fools gold covered, monstrous car. Gatsby's car was widely known in town because of its appearance. The car symbolizes Gatsby's need for materialistic satisfactions and him appearing to be having the American Dream life.

The second symbol is the green light that Gatsby sees in chapter 1. The green light represents Gatsby's hopes and dreams for the future. In chapter 1, Gatsby's neighbor, Nick, watches Gatsby one evening as he goes outside and watches the green light from his mansion. Nick says, ...he (Gatsby) stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward--and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness (Fitzgerald 20). Nick sees Gatsby reach out towards a light. At first Nick isn't sure what Gatsby is looking at, but then he sees one tiny faraway light. Nick doesn't know why Gatsby is stretching his arms toward the light and is quite curious.
Gatsby sees the green light all the time since his mansion faces it. The green light for him symbolizes a hope that he and Daisy will reunite and will fall in love once again one day. Later on in chapter five, Gatsby and Daisy go and look towards the green light together. If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the bay,' said Gatsby. 'You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.' Daisy put her arm through his abruptly, but he seemed absorbed in what he had just said. Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever.

Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one (Fitzgerald 94). Gatsby and Daisy watch towards the green light together. Gatsby is so in the moment and is soaking everything in. Gatsby and Daisy are finally together but it seems like the green light which symbolizes his dreams, vanishes. The question is, since the green light vanishes, does that mean that when you get your dream and finally achieve it, it somehow loses its meaning and value and disappears? Sometimes, people focus so much on what they want in life, their hopes and dreams lose their value because they don't appreciate what they have in their life at that moment.

In conclusion, Fitzgerald uses other people around Gatsby, such as his friend Nick, to really give the readers an inside peek of Gatsby's American Dream. He also uses Gatsby's symbolic green light to symbolize a dream that in the end wasn't enough for Gatsby himself. People will go through any measures to attain that wealth and status. They will give up their morals and beliefs to try to gain something that in the end won't make the happy. True happiness isn't in wealth or status. True happiness is being content with what you have and being true to yourself.

The Great Gatsby Movie and Book Comparison

The Great Gatsby is a book known by millions of people in the world- and for great reason. The book depicts two star-crossed lovers whose relationship is constantly thrown off course by other forces. In the book, a somewhat relationship happens between Jay Gatsby, the protagonist, and Daisy, the golden girl. Forty-nine years after the book was published, a movie came out, followed by another that came out in 2013, this time, more fit to the modern audience. Both the movies help the reader to better understand and picture the book, despite their differences.

In chapter 1 of the Great Gatsby, one of the major differences in the (2013) movie from the book is how the movie started. In the movie, the opening scene shows Nick Carraway and a psychiatrist in an office where Nick talks and writes about his past experiences with Gatsby, whereas the book first starts off with Nick talking about the advice that was given to him by his father. The quote, Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had, (Fitzgerald, 1) is what Fitzgerald uses to start the novel. The director of the (2013) movie most likely added the scene to give the viewers an insight into what was happening between Nick and Gatsby. The beginning could have also been used as a hook because the author, in all likelihood, used it to set the tone for the whole film, giving the film a bit of an eerie feeling. The hook made me want to watch more, unlike the book, which made me want to shut it and give up on reading it all together.

Additionally, chapter 1 also differs in both versions in that when Nick goes to have dinner at Daisy's house, the dinner takes place outside in the backyard in the book, whereas in the movie, it occurs inside the house. When Tom received a phone call in the movie (2013), he just moved to the room next to the dining room to answer the phone call, and in the book, he had to walk inside the house to answer the call. Maybe the director for the movie (2013) decided to make this scene a bit different from the book to be able to see what was going on in both rooms in one set because in the movie (1974) they didn't really show the part when Tom went to go answer his phone call.

In addition, chapter 1 also has some similarities. In both the book and the movie, Nick goes over to Tom and Daisy's house to have dinner. In both versions, Tom receives a phone call ( Fitzgerald, 5-21). Presumably, the director wanted to have the same scene in order for the viewers to understand the point of it. In the book and the movie (1974) , when Tom leaves the dinner table, the author and director both make it seem suspicious by Tom going by himself to go answer the phone call. To add to the list of similarities, in the book and both movies (1974 and 2013), they all mention the book The Rise of the Colored Empires. This may be because when the book was made, the stock market crash had just happened three to four weeks before the book was made.

In chapter 7, another similarity can be found between the book and both the movies, they both have Myrtle, Tom's lover and Wilson's wife (Fitzgerald, 137) die in a car accident. Myrtle died due to Daisy not slowing down the car she was driving, due to her being tense from a prior scene. As a result of her killing Myrtle, Daisy decides to speed off, not acknowledging what she had just done. In both versions of The Great Gatsby, Wilson reacts in the same way, however, when Tom was introduced into the scene, a noticeable difference was present. Tom tries to console Wilson and get out of the blame, that he knows would happen because he rode a yellow car hours before the accident happened. With Tom's fear to not get in jail and because he is rich, he will try to put the blame on Gatsby, since Tom wants to get back at him and to leave Daisy alone. Despite this, a friend of Wilson tries to convince to not do anything rash, without any actual proof or evidence, but Wilson doesn't listen as he had his mind corrupted while he was vulnerable.

In the book, Tom says he is a friend of Wilson and that he knows the yellow car (Fitzgerald, 140), when the police officer questions him about what was going on with him and Wilson. In the movie, though, the police officers hear that Tom had a yellow car clearly making it noticeable that other people around him are doubting him and thinking that he's a liar, especially when he said that he had a blue car. The motive of the director to do this most probably is to make it more noticeable how Wilson has come to be aware of things around him that he didn't before but doesn't notice those. Though one thing that both the book and movie was noticeable the same was that Wilson didn't dare question, or doubt, Tom not even a little bit, about why Myrtle would act the way she did when Tom would come. If Wilson had just been suspicious of Tom and listen to his friend, then he wouldn't have done what he did, especially to the wrong person. The kind of influence and manipulation that Tom had on Wilson, greatly affected the actions that Wilson did afterward.

There's always a reason for someone to cheat, for Tom there must have been a wonderful reason for why he cheated of Daisy with Myrtle who was younger then both Tom. Daisy Buchanan was a real beauty, many men, even the Great Gatsby wanted her. She even gave Tom a child. Tom had it all money, power, and daisy a beautiful young woman. Tom did not love her as much as she thought he did, because he did cheat the big question is why didn't she do with Gatsby he has true love for her and she still stayed with Tom.

Daisy did love the money Tom had but gatsby also had money, for Tom to cheat he must have been miserable, because at dinner he answered the call from his mistress and daisy did know about myrtle but did nothing about it. So why do nothing about it, daisy and tom had a family them and their kid. Tom for security, he was ridiculously rich and she wanted a lifestyle of comfort. Now daisy clearly loved Tom and had a lot of great memories from the beginning of their marriage- but after his affair he stopped showing up, he wasn't even there when their daughter was born he was nowhere to be found.

But Tom Buchanan had everything any young man living in the roaring twenties could have ever wanted. He graduated from a Yale where he was a star of a football team. His family had always had a lot of money and by the time he moved to East Egg he was so wealthy that Nick found it hard to believe that someone so young can have this much money. For someone to stay happy during a relationship doesn't always need to involve money, daisy has been with him long enough to realize that the money he has should not be the thing keeping her happy.

A part of the reason, at least, is because they share a child together. There was at this time, even in Tom and Daisy's social set, a strong prejudice against divorced couples; especially couples with children. Daisy, especially, would have risked serious social scorn. Even though Tom kept a mistress, if he were discreet enough the prevailing idea among their friends would be that they should avoid divorce at all costs.

Even though Gatsby had a lot of money he didn't get it the legal way cause at the time it was illegal to make or sell liquor, and that's what he did Gatsby sold it at a drugstore. He was a miserable man, he had everything he could have ever wanted the only thing he did not have was the girl that he had dreamed about he had parties upon parties and more than half of the people that had showed up he had never met.

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. It is the 1920's, or the roaring 20's. At that time, a lot of people were thriving and the economy was booming, the stock market was going up, and it was a time of prosperity. There were a lot of wealthy men at that time, and they can be very unpredictable. They can be a caring gentleman, or abusive and controlling to women. There were a lot of parties hosted by wealthy people, with jazzy music. The Great Gatsby is taken place during that decade. Most of these characters in the Great Gatsby are unique and unpredictable at the same time. Tom Buchanan is one of those wealthy people. Both Tom and Gatsby are fighting over Daisy. Although Tom and Gatsby are fighting over Daisy, Tom has a bad reputation and he is hated more.He has a bad reputation for cheating on his wife and he doesn't want his wife to be with Gatsby.

Tom has a bad reputation throughout because he cheats on his wife. Both Tom and Daisy have a very poor and unstable relationship. There are times where Tom was cheating on his wife and where he is abusive to his wife. One reason is that he has an affair with his mistress, Myrtle. He also has an affair with her. I first met Tom Buchanan's mistress. The fact that he had one was insisted upon wherever he was known. His acquaintances resented the fact that he turned up in popular restaurants with her and, leaving her at a table, sauntered about, chatting with whomsoever he knew (Fitzgerald 24).

Tom only cares about the wealth and money he has. This is an example of Tom cheating on his wife. Tom treats his wife and other women like it are just another object. He also takes his marriage for granted. There are times where Tom was caught cheating throughout the story. Daisy is in Tom's possession. Daisy knows that she is being cheated low-key upset with him. This is the spark of the conflict of Gatsby and Tom.Tom and Gatsby are in a feud. They are fighting over Daisy's love.

Daisy is the person who starts the conflict between Gatsby and Tom. Gatsby manages to have an affair with Daisy without Tom knowing. The conflict starts to heat up when Tom starts to ask Gatsby about Daisy. During the lunch, Tom then starts arguing to Gatsby about Daisy. She never loved you, do you hear? She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart, she never loved anyone except me (Fitzgerald 130). In the first place, Daisy is already taken by Tom Buchanan. Daisy isn't really satisfied with Tom because their relationship is unstable.

Gatsby wants to prove himself that he wants to be with Daisy by attacking Tom with his words. He tried to use his words by saying false things about Daisy. Tom has a slight advantage over Gatsby. Most of the money Tom had was inherited through his family. Tom also exposed Gatsby about his criminal past. In the end, Tom wins the argument and prevented Gatsby earning Daisy's love back. The Great Soul of Gatsby

Jazz age, as the appellation of 1920s, was one of the memorable and important time to United State. After the World war I, America profited from the selling war materials and industrial production, citizens improved their economic condition which caused the dramatically increasing of consumption level. American enjoyed the extravagant life crazier than ever before. Materialism rose in response to the this time and conditions. (Price, S, 1999).

The Great Gatsby is the most famous novel illustrating this period of history, It portraits a tragedy of the protagonist Jay Gatsby based on the real historical background in 1920’s New York. Gatsby was the one who didn’t sinked into the a site of desire, he had his great ambition to achieve his spiritual goal rather than his material goals. Although he use inappropriate methods to acquire money, this didn’t affect his beautiful and great soul. In such a materialistic, fickleness and vacuous society, Gatsby’s pure love, his endeavor and persistence for dream, also the positive influence on future generations made him becoming a hero, shining in the soulless time.

Gatsby’s pure love was the most valuable treasure under the background of the materialistic society, it also reflects his high spiritual level that other people in the society couldn’t reach. Although he used the inappropriate acquiring his wealth, his attitude about love and emotion was more serious and mature than people who earned appropriately but lost in the materialistic world. In Chapter 6, Gatsby recalled the memory of the first time he met Daisy. It happened after the war, a party for officers was taken place in her house, Gatsby was one of the officer who was invited. When he saw Daisy he hesitated between the girl and his dream. But suddenly he made the choice. “He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God” (119).

Time passed five years after, Daisy already changed who she used to be, she has became other’s wife and been superficial and Materialistic. But Gatsby’s love didn’t change any, he still tried ever mind to possess Daisy, bravely said Daisy and he loved each other just in front of Tom. He even undertook Daisy’s crime, in chapter 7, if Nick didn’t realize the it from Gatsby’s word, the truth that Daisy killed Myrtle would never be discovered. He had enough wealth and power helping him get rid of the trouble, but he choose to be the scapegoat, still waiting for her reply but refuse to escape. He always willing to be occupied by her even sacrificed his uninhibited soul or materially achievements. Compared with Tom afraid to expose the amour with Myrtle that might ruin his reputation, Gatsby’s love looks valuable. Also Observing man and wife’s relationship at that time, the loveless marriages between Daisy and Nick, Tom married her only in view of her beauty but not love, this could be proved from his derailment, he cheated with other woman though he has a wife.

Also the reason Tom redeem Daisy was only for his dignity. Daisy, as a representative of the materialistic society, she only consider about Tom’s money but lack the true feeling to her husband. In chapter 1 we could discover her thought about the marriage. when Daisy was chatting with Nick she said: “I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.” (20). She considered becoming a girl who live happily, ignore the annoyance from emotion. The choice between Tom and Gatsby she chosen the former only because Gatsby’s past couldn’t bring her sense of safety. In such a society, people utilized each other to acquire self-interest. Their behaviors were not for love, but for fulfilling their own desires. There is not love inside them, but only animal’s instinct. under the striking contrast, the persistence of Gatsby’s love seems like a hero’s way. Although he used dirty way to get money and power, his spirit was far more lofty than them. People might betray their lovers even they are regulate citizens, Gatsby disobeyed the law but he maintained his pure mind and purpose of love The concept of hero is not only own by people who do some significant of spectacular things, but only for people who have their own love and dream, and willing strive for them, they are the hero of themselves.

Secondly, unremitting endeavor and persistence supported his dream and stood him out at that shiftless period. His ambition and enthusiasm proved that he would be unique from other peers and his family. He was unwilling to be a everyman. Even after he got rich by violating the law, he didn’t hanker after his materials but using them to chase his spiritual goal. His father described him: “Of course we was broke up when he run off from home but I see now there was a reason for it. He knew he had a big future in front of him.”(184). Also observing Gatsby’s schedule would be more visualized about his endeavor and insistence for success. He disciplined himself with a very strict rule, and always promoted himself.

At that time, people advocated hedonism and be content with things as they are. Gatsby became the wealthy through his efforts. The volition and determination was rare and valuable at that time. Retrospecting Gatsby’s life, he acquired reputation, money and power by wrongful measures, however he didn’t corrupt by these material achievements, but always tried to achieve his dream, even he might lose those materials. One opinion could testify it, after Gatsby became rich, His life was lavish and was fulled of materials. he held extravagant party for strangers to spree, he associated with people who believed materialism. But he had no interest about those things at all. The purpose of hold party was just for drawing Daisy’s attention. After he dated with her again, the party stopped. He supposed to know many young and beautiful ladies, enjoy the orectic party every week and advocate to others that he is the owner of the house enjoying the compliment. But everything’s purpose was to get Daisy. It was extremely difficult for a person sacrifice his materials for his spiritual dream. He pursued the chasteness of mind. With constancy of purpose and persistence, Gatsby became a upstream challenger, he didn’t believe the destiny but strive for his dream. that is hero always would do.

Gatsby challenged the obsolete thought, started from the bottom but influenced the society and became as powerful as old moneys. His action expressed to the world that stratum could be break and everyone have chance to success. He has become the symbol of “American dream”. Gatsby lived in a special period that the American society has face changing. There are still a group of people from high class believing human have born with distinction of status. “This fellow has worked out the whole thing. It’s up to us who are the dominant race to watch out or these other races will have control of things.”(16, Tom).

It was hard to go up and leave the status that people supposed to be. However, Gatsby didn’t be restricted by the behindhand thought, he was a romantic person and believed himself. His spirit and stories urged millions of youths striving for their own dream. An opinion discussing Gatsby is not a hero is that he utilized inappropriate and dirty ways earning money. America promulgated prohibition at that time, Gatsby sold alcohol was completely violated the laws. This might affect audiences that agree with the way to acquire money. When people discuss about Gatsby’s story of acquiring wealth, his goal should be more focused but not process. Because of the twisty values in that period, Gatsby had to use unusual way to reach the high status that is very difficult at that time. It reflects to the unfair society that poor man had lots of obstruction that resist them go up. However, Gatsby used a dirty way to reach his pure and beautiful dream, society could not just easily affirm he isn’t a hero. The image of him was multidimensional. In conclusion , he is a hero live in a wrong time and wrong society, or should we say, the special society and special time made him unique and worth to be a hero. He is a tragedy hero.

In the inane and fickle society, Gatsby was the only person who had soul and pursue spiritual satisfaction. He was willing to spend his whole life, risk everything, even violated the law for his life goal. His love to Daisy was earnest, he was responsible enough to take care of people he loved. His persistence and endeavor for his dream was valuable in the period of time people only knew lead a life of pleasure. Finally his story inspired thousands of future generation with dreams. His story shined the darkest society.

Gatsby’s Biggest Desire

Adam Meehan psychoanalyzed The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Meehan's article is, Repetition, race, and desire, in the Great Gatsby. In this psychoanalysis, Meehan covers desire and repetition thoroughly and does not necessarily go over race. In the novel race is not a large factor but Meehan did not necessarily cover all aspects of Gatsby's desire.

Meehan states that Gatsby chases Daisy because she is like the mother he never had and uses her to fill that void. The second is Meehan lacks to state that one of Gatsby's greatest desires was money. Meehan insists that Daisy is a mere placeholder, an object of Gatsby's true desire. He states that she represents something beyond desireas the symbol of that which the symbol wants but cannot have (Meehan Repetition, Race, and Desire in The Great Gatsby).

Gatsby doesn't want to praise himself for what he is, the son of a poor farmer, but a man he wishes he was, part of the old money. One of Gatsby's desire is to relive his past, which Nick's suggestion that one cannot repeat the past. Meehan states that Gatsby laughs at that idea and states, of course, you can. This is showing that Gatsby is hoping to not only recreate the past but also wants to reconstruct it. Meehan's second half of his psychoanalysis states that Gatsby does not just desire Daisy because of her looks. He desires the way she talks, smells, her whiteness, the feel she gives, the smell of her skin, her position and etcetera. Gatsby must climb along to achieve his desires because he pursues a source of nourishment which cannot be attained. Lastly, Meehan states that Gatsby desires Daisy because she is a reflection of his mother.

Gatsby never received enough love growing up from his parents and so he hopes that Daisy will fill that endless void. Gatsby was seeking love but not when it came to his parents. His greatest desires comprised of Daisy's love, to become rich, and to change his persona. His whole persona began because of them, seeing them as shiftless and unsuccessful farm people made him disappointed in who he really was ( Fitzgerald 104). If Gatsby wanted to be loved by his parents he could have received it but he wanted nothing to do with them. Gatsby's imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all (Fitzgerald 104). Throughout the novel when Gatsby even considers mentioning his parents it was never true, he was too ashamed of them. He rose from his own platonic conception of himself, and even if it meant believing his parents did not exist.

Gatsby's conception of himself is what lead him to his greatest desire, money, which Meehan forgot to mention. He hated the poor lifestyle and saw other people living the glamorous life, and so he went out to pursue his dream. Daisy is an important factor in Gatsby's life but there is little evidence love was Gatsby's primary motivation. She was just part of his plan to reach his self-image. The first goal was was to become rich, and Gatsby was going to do whatever it took. Gatsby stated that Meyer Wolfsheim was the man who fixed the World's Series back in 1919 (Fitzgerald 78).

This shows he was willing to do shady work with shady people to get what he wanted. His second goal was to erase his history, at his parties, no one knew him personally but by the rumors that were spread. Some stating that he was a German spy during the war, and was related Kaiser Wilhelm (Fitzgerald 48). Finally, he needed to marry Daisy and she was considered to be part of the old money, people born into wealth. No matter how rich Gatsby was, he would never hold the same value of someone that was born into wealth. Marrying Daisy would help him get closer to achieving that goal and being part of the old money.

Gatsby greatest desire has always been about money, because he hated the poor lifestyle ever since he was a child. Daisy was simply a placeholder for Gatsby, this was a sign that the love would never work. Gatsby grew up with the mentality that if you work hard enough, anything is achievable. This is true but not for everything in life, some things just cannot be achieved. Just like Daisy's love, trying to hide his true identity, and trying to belong to a group when he was not born into it. Gatsby pushed away his own people and was trying to fit in where he did not belong, which lead him to his greatest downfall.

Men in the Great Gatsby

The human brain is capable of doing many things, even the unimaginable. Ones actions may seem irrational to others, but that persons motives is the drive that initiates the action. The psychological critical theory is a perspective in biology that looks into someones mind and thoughts to better understand the forces that drive their motivation. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, author F. Scott Fitzgerald utilizes the characters Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan, and Nick Carraway to portray why their motivations occur.

Jay Gatsby is motivated by his desire to relive the past. Every decision he makes is to impress the girl of his dream and the girl he first fell in love with. Gatsby is a young man in his thirties who grew up living impoverished. He met and fell in love with the women of his dream as a military officer. Her name was Daisy. He was drawn toward her luxurious lifestyle and he wanted to live a life of extravagance with Daisy forever. However, Gatsby was not wealthy enough to be with the girl of his dreams, so he had to convince Daisy of his worth. Jay left to fight in the war, and Daisy was waiting for him to get back. He knew that he could not satisfy Daisy with the money he had, and needed to gain an education and get rich so that he could impress Daisy. While waiting for Jay, Daisy got impatient and married Tom, a man who has inherited all of his wealth and impressed Daisy.

Gatsby is inspired to do whatever it takes to win the love of his life back. Gatsby’s devotion to secure Daisy’s love again cannot be accomplished without him becoming rich, so he works to get the money needed to win back Daisy. Gatsby achieved this goal through crime such as distributing alcohol illegally. When Tom says that he, “found out” about Gatsby’s, “‘drug-stores’” Gatsby admitted to his mischief and responded “What about it?” (Fitzgerald 110). This portrays the idea that Gatsby was willing to do whatever it takes to get the love of his life back.
Gatsby’s five year success in fortune would be thrown to waste if he couldn’t grab the attention of Daisy. Jay “bought” a colossal mansion in West Egg “so that Daisy would be across the bay” (Fitzgerald 72). He also threw extravagant parties every weekend where uninvited guests were allowed to show up hoping that one day Daisy would show up in his mansion, to knowing that it is his and they could relive their past.

Gatsby and Tom’s feud over the dream girl Daisy disrupts the dream that Jay desires and causes him to lose sight of his dream. Gatsby ends up pressuring Daisy into falling back in love with him, but Daisy is content with Tom and will only play games with gatsby to get what she wants. His unwillingness to let go of the past ultimately gets him killed because he fails to understand that Daisy will not leave Tom because of the comfort that Tom has provided during the five years that Jay and Daisy have been apart.

Fitzgerald demonstrates the traumatic losses of a self-made man through Gatsby. He uses Gatsby’s trauma and psychological loss after losing Daisy as the reason to his motives which is the reason why he fails to leave the illusive world of living in the past. After leaving Daisy to go fight in war, Jay was psychologically damaged as he lost the only thing that mattered to him. It is that “Gatsby encountered his first trauma when he could not keep Daisy in his life” (Bui 43). This caused him to escape from reality and enter a world or a mindset where he was still with Daisy, but this was all an illusion to reality. Five years went on and Gatsby continued to fall in a deeper hole of a fantasy life, thus making it harder to move on and consequently be the cause of his death.
Nick Carraway is motivated by money and success. Nick originally lived in the Midwest and had a guaranteed job in the family business.

However, Nick moves to New York hoping to start a new life filled with money and extravagance. He buys a cottage in West egg and gets a job in bonds. Once in New York, Nick notices that he enjoys the city and the people’s lifestyle around him. He gets a taste of the luxury that Gatsby has and is eager to start his new life. Nick notes that “There was so much to read, for one thing, and so much fine health to be pulled down out of the young breath-giving air. I bought a dozen volumes on banking and credit and investment securities” (Fitzgerald 23). Nick wants to be like gatsby and learn the ways of his lifestyle, so he joins Gatsby at Gatsby’s weekend parties and is invited to spend time with Jay for lunch many times. However, after being exposed to many of Gatsby’s jobs with Wolfshiem and his drug store business, Nick hesitates on going through with his dream. He also helped cause a battle over a girl between Gatsby and Tom.

When Gatsby dies, Nick is aware that no one really cared about Gatsby and no one attended his funeral. This makes Nick question his whole dream and later realize that his original motivation was an illusion to reality and was quite damaging to the mind of oneself. Nick is able to go back on his dream because he is a calm, level headed man who sets goals for himself and knows when to give up on his dream. After getting tied up in the Gatsby versus Tom drama over Daisy, Nick struggles to escape from it all. While trying to fight and work for his own fortune, Nick finds himself looking after others rather than himself. He gets caught up in the extravagant lifestyle of Gatsby, Daisy, and Tom and puts his future success behind him at times. He is trustworthy, but almost too trustworthy as he keeps a lot of personal secrets to himself, such as Tom and Myrtle’s affair, Gatsby and Daisy’s attempt at love again, and also Gatsby’s ways of making money. This allows Nick to stand out and stay as an outsider to the world around him.

Nick is able to avoid destruction in his motives and mindset because he “does not recognize the world of trauma and loss that Gatsby has encountered in losing his ideal love” (Bui 43). Nick also had the opportunity to reflect and evaluate Jays experiences after being “traumatized by the life of Gatsby” (Bui 43). This allowed him to learn from Jays past and prevent him from falling into a psychological mess.

Tom’s goal is to maintain his power through his riches by being a racist, a sexist and also abusive. Tom is a large man with a cruel body and voice. His power and strength comes from being a college athlete. Tom’s appearance resembles his actions. His strength and hardship gives him the ability to be both aggressive and threatening. There are many instances where Tom feels as if he is losing his authority over someone so he reacts in away that will keep him in power. For examples, when Myrtle repeats the name “Daisy”, Tom feels as if he is loosing his control over her and by “Making a short deft movement,” he “broke her nose with his open hand” (Fitzgerald 44).

Tom gets himself into trouble with Daisy and almost loses her to Gatsby because of his need to have power. He treats Daisy as an object sometimes and leaves her for Myrtle but, he “always” goes “back” (Fitzgerald 108). Tom is fortunate that he kept Daisy comfortable for the five years that they were together before Jay comes back for her. Otherwise he would have lost his power and authority in the relationship and Daisy would feel comfortable in leaving him.

Tom avoids traumatic losses by keeping the love of his life Daisy with him and not with Gatsby. Tom could have easily spiraled down into a dark place if he lost both Myrtle and Daisy. After losing Myrtle, moving away from New York was the best thing for him as he was able to move on without negative effects to his traumatic loss. Tom will stay in power and have authority over people if he has both money and Daisy, and through the novel, he manages to keep both even after a rough patch with Daisy.

Francis Scott Fitzgerald utilizes Gatsby’s motive to repeat the past, Tom’s need of having authority and power, and Nicks will to do whatever it takes to be successful to illustrate how people use their motivations to work for and eventually meet the expectations of their own American Dream. Many people have a drive or a motive in their brain that makes them react the way that they do. The psychological critical theory also helps explain the intentions of others.

Roaring Twenties in the Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is set on Long Island in the summer of 1922. This timeframe in American history is popularly known as the Roaring Twenties; where society had a valued substance over money. In this story, wealth and status is a huge motivator in the characters' relationships and outcomes. Daisy marries Tom because of the lifestyle that he provides for her. Tom's affair with Myrtle is due to the privileged of his world and Gatsby lusts for Daisy like a prized bet. Fitzgerald's tone, symbolism, diction, syntax, imagery, and voice to bind this novel in the DNA of American literature. The essence of America spirit is captured and distilled.

Narrator, Nick Callaway, is set as having advantages in his life such as a well to do family and an Ivy League education. His wealthier second cousin, Daisy and her husband Tom, are confident enough to invite him into their home. She laughed again, as if she said something very witty looking up into my face, promising that there was no one in the world she so much wanted to see. Pg. 9. Even though Daisy is sitting with a strange posh woman, Nick tells how she lights up when he meets her. Almost like she was just using people around her as tools and when Nick, a new face, shows up that she can act like her life is just perfect again. I believe that Daisy is a wispy character with little true enjoyment from life. The narrator includes Daisy's attractiveness, Her voice is full of money, He said suddenly. Pg 120.

Scott Fitzgerald established this tone to further demonstrate towards the reader that Daisy's existence is so over drawn by money that they can personally hear it in her voice. Supposedly Tom and Daisy settled down in the fashionable East egg after drifting around with rich society which played polo. When Nick illustrates the sad truth about the Mid-West, Daisy adds: How gorgeous! Let's go back, Tom. To-morrow! pg 9. She conceives the notion that people use the money to receive something emotional from it. I feel sad for Daisy as she feels she must put up airs around everyone. Tom and Daisy's movements are all supported by their money. Every character in The Great Gatsby is on the road to dissatisfaction. As Daisy and Nick use dialogue in chapter one, I believe Daisy confesses what her feelings are towards being a woman in the 1920's. I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool-that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool. Pg. 17.

Girls of any class seem to be less than men, and Daisy understands that well. So, when the mistress, Myrtle, joins Tom in the evening the theme of greed is better developed. The narrator shares with the reader how the influence of elaborate attire has an influence on Myrtle's personality, Her laughter, her gestures, her assertions became more violently affected moment by moment,pg.31- Myrtle explained, All they think of is money. I had a woman up here last week to look at my feet, and when she gave me the bill, you'd of thought she had my appendicitis out. The car mechanics wife tries to pass as rich through her affair with Tom and is constrained by her lack of wealth. The reader witnesses the dread consequences that Myrtle faces choosing Tom. Myrtle's insecurities to fit in with the privileged is necessary to this theme.

I believe that Fitzgerald fit Myrtle's type of character into the novel for evidence that the American Dream was dissipating in the hearts of average civilians. Suddenly people were used as stepping stones rather than believing in their own dreams. Gatsby's notoriety comes from, most importantly, his enormous wealth. He is a delightful character trained by the ideal of money. Partially, the reader really doesn't know what to think of Gatsby. He acts like a gentleman but has rumors of murdering people, and when he gets nervous, he vanishes. The narrator concluded as to why Gatsby took such an interest in Nick, He had waited five years and bought a mansion where he dispensed starlight to casual moths so that he could 'come over' some afternoon to a stranger's garden. Pg 78.

Gatsby had done everything in the past five years to win Daisy over with money. Including killing and bootlegging to show his worth to Daisy. This explains, in the meeting of Daisy and Gatsby, why Gatsby wants every detail to be perfect for her. Even pointing out how magnificent his luxury is, My house looks well, doesn't it? he demanded. Pg. 89. He hadn't once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes. Pg 91.

I agree that Gatsby had the most expensive taste out of the characters because what he was looking for was true love. His greed towards money was blinded by his love for his dearest Daisy. The importance of money to Gatsby was just what the others had; a feeling that could come from the bounty of wealth, but it was the way that he used the importance which is important. Hardly anyone shows up to Gatsby's funeral since the only thing that people are attracted to is his extravagant wealth and parties, not the man behind it all. I think that the only thing who knew the real James Gatz was his love for his Daisy People whom Nick called about Gatsby were selfish and unable to care about his tragic ending even though Gatsby had given everything he had to the unamused guests.

Using the ritzy lifestyle of the 20's, Fitzgerald argues that in the American life, from the novel, money frequently is valued over substance. Each character failed to realize that materials cannot buy happiness. They showcase that having too much money can cause to abuse or feel superior to those who have less and lose the real meaning in life. This story was structured carefully and directed to those of The Lost Generation, but everyone that reads The Great Gatsby can value from it.
