Texting while Driving should be Illegalized

The number of roads accidents has been on increase over the years. The rise of technology and the improvement of the communication channels through texting have been associated with the rise in the number of road accidents. Various after road accident analysis has indicated a good proportion of accidents reported from texting while driving. The government through the relevant authority has the principal mandate of protecting the precious life of human beings. Human life is sacred and should be protected at all cost. With the increase of the recorded deaths caused by the recklessness of the drivers, texting while driving, strict policies and regulations should be enhanced inform of legislations to curb the vice. This paper critically elaborates why texting while driving should be considered illegal.

Texting and driving is generally the process of communication by the use of text messages while behind the wheel. According to National Traffic Safety Administration it is the act of writing and reading a massage while driving at the same time. The massages may be those of phone, emails or the utilization of the website applications. The growth of technology has led on an increase in social network platform which has made texting the major mode of communication across the world (World Health Organization 2018). . This can be associated with the fact that in most instance it’s the most effective and efficient means of the communication in terms of cost and also privacy as no communications is overheard. Although with significant merits, one of the critical demerits have been the increase in the number of road accidents associated with texting while driving. It is in fact classified as one of the most extremely dangerous vices by the authorities. Texting has become a highly considered norm for the last two decades due to an increased number of affordable smartphones.

Various studies have been carried out to indicate how serious texting behind the wheel can be disruptive. Government data and information have linked major mobile phones as one of the major distractors while driving. According to the International Telecommunications Union, “texting, making calls, and other interactions with in-vehicle information and communication system while driving is a serious source of driver distraction and increases the risk of traffic accidents”. In the year 2013, according to the National Safety Council, there were more than 1.4 million road accidents that were directly attributed to the use of phone during driving. Through critical analysis, the data entail average of 15% of these accidents attributed to the use of text messages in the United States alone. In the year 2010, studies and statistics ranked texting while driving as the 8th among the majors causes of life death. This was higher than deaths that are reported from some of the major life- threatening diseases (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2019). Unfortunately, the number is believed to be on the increase over the years and strict acts should be developed to curb the vice and reduce the number of the accidents and ultimately the number of death toll associated with road crashes.

Conclusively, road accidents have been on the rise over the years. The accidents have ranged from single vehicle accidents to more devasting accidents which have left many maimed and even deaths. The death tolls have been on the rise to due recklessness among other major reasons not only in our country but across the world. As elaborated through concluded extensive research studies, texting while driving can be classified as one of the major causes of road accidents in the country. The government through the relevant body develops strict rules and measures and makes it illegal to text while driving.
