The director of Memories of Underdevelopment, Tomas Gutierrez Alea, was a middle-class university-educated Cuban who went along with the revolution despite some of the doubts about emerging bureaucratization displayed by the equally bourgeois protagonist of his film. Sergio, who is well off, chooses to remain behind when his family takes off for the US. The time is 1961 and the film is set between the departure after the catastrophic Bay of Pigs intrusion and the missile crisis the year after. Tomas Gutierrez Alea's film starts out with an airport congested with people leaving Cuba for Miami. The word ""Exit"" which has been stamped on the people passports who are leaving Cuba to Miami shows that they will not be back.

In the meantime, Sergio who is caught among the bourgeois way of life he has developed exhausted of and a Cuba whose insurgency he appears not to get it. His possess predicaments are individual and sexual. His life, living on rents from his properties after the seizure of his family furniture store, is basically monotonous. the narrative film of the time plays on the tv in Sergio's penthouse flat. However, he sees himself as uninvolved. Observing the city from his tall vantage point through a telescope he says that ""nothing has changed"". The issue is, of course, that he has not moved but the world, his world, is changing.

Sergio, the hero, is scorching around his own culture; Havana utilized to be a Caribbean Paris, individuals said, with its clubs and music and customer culture. Presently it's fair another Third World capital. But Sergio, in spite of the fact that he has chosen to remain, still sees his possess society through a to begin with world focal point. The long visit to Hemingway's house on the island appears us the intriguing form of Cuba that the primary world and Sergio still held to. However, things are changing, and sooner or afterward the extravagance of existing in a void terminated to be an alternative. The Missile Crisis of 1962, on which the film closes, clears out no room for instability.

The picture's most open storyline may be a reasonably revolting undertaking between Sergio and the youthful lady, Elena, he picks up on the road. Persuading her to spend time with him by promising to present the trying on-screen character to a maker he knows, Sergio gets her up to his flat, where a dated diversion of cat-and-mouse unfurls. Elena denies his physical propels but hesitantly permits him to continue; after they rest together, she cries and says, ""You've demolished me. … What will I tell my mother?"" Still, Elena needs to end up Sergio's sweetheart and as it were after he starts to stow away from her does, she goes to her family, who bring him to court as a rapist.

Modern-day audiences may have an amply amount to say around that, but in Memories of Underdevelopment, this motion picture is fair grain for advance contemplation by a man who merits our intrigued more than our sensitivity. Starting moviegoers who think of Cuba as a backwater time capsule, cut off from the world, will discover Memories of Underdevelopment a valuable, now and then enchanting put to start rectifying that impression.

Memories of Underdevelopment is the most excellent illustration of the inventive and original cinema coming out of Cuba within the mid-1960s. It uses the combination of narrative, documentary and still photographs that defined what was called the ""urgent cinema"". It is witty and flippant, and cheerful to create jokes at cinema's possess cost indeed in a genuine investigation of the relationship between people and the society in which they live. The film itself is likely the leading reply to Sergio's questions as to whether the Third World being able to create its claim of unique considerations and dreams.
