Now, many people keep pets at home. The most popular ones are cats and dogs. They are not just pets but family members. This essay will show the difference of keeping a dog or a cat. Dogs and cats have their own habits. Dogs were domesticated about 15,000 to 40,000 years ago. Dogs have a good sense of smell and hearing."A dog's nose has two hundred million nasal olfactory receptors. Each receptor detects and identifies the minute odor molecules that are constantly flying off different objects. Dogs can sense odors at concentrations nearly 100 million times lower than humans can."Their sweat glands are underdeveloped, which results in the fear of heat. Dogs always stick out their tongue to dissipate heat by secreting saliva. Dogs pee to mark territory and attract the opposite sex. Cats have been domesticated for 3,500 years, but not as thoroughly as dogs. It hunts by ambush. Most of cats are able to climb the trees. Cats are nimble and capricious, like to sleep and clean themselves. Cats have meat pad under the toes, which allows them to walk without sound. Cats’ nails can be drawn in and out. Cats like to eat fish and mice because they contain taurine that enables cats to see even at night.

It’s good to keep cats or dogs. Dogs used to assist our ancestors in hunting. Keeping a dog as a pet lowers the blood pressure. " A results indicated that, compared to non-dog owners, the dog owners' scores were significantly lower for psychosomatic symptoms and stress and were higher for general health, vitality, emotional role, absence of bodily pain, social functioning, and mental health."Cats help people catch mice. When people touch a cat, it reduces stress and anxiety. "Cat owners are smart. A 2010 survey of British pet owners by the University of Bristol found that people who owned cats were more likely to have college degrees than their dog loving counterparts. In 2014, a researcher in Wisconsin surveyed 600 college students and found that cat owners were actually more intelligent as well. One study found that over a 10-year period cat owners were 30 percent less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than non-cat owners."

Dogs and cats have different requirements for their owners. All of them need clean nest, eating bowl, toilet and sanitary ware. Besides, dogs are lively and outgoing. They need more company. Owners usually walk their dogs every day, or some dogs, like husky, will tear down the house. Dogs are loyal and obedient to their owners. Owners also have to choose the correct collars for their dogs. On the contrary, cats don’t like collars, which make them anxious. Cats are generally quiet and introverted. You don’t have to take it outside. Cats keep a low profile and don’t like being boxed around. You can’t impose your thoughts on a cat.

For owners, which pet is better which depends on themselves. If you have enough time and patience, dog is better for you. If you don’t want to go outside every day and just want a warm company, cat is better. In general, what you like is always the best. No matter what pet you keep, you should treat it well.
