On October 12, 1492 Christopher Columbus sailed to Asia and ran into a new country called the New World. Columbus brought over many different things to the New World. He brought smallpoxs and sugarcane. When he arrived there was another illness syphilis. Smallpox, sugarcane, and syphilis could the greatest impact of the Columbian Exchange.
First, an impaction of the discovery of the New World smallpox was a big one. Smallpox was a big impact because it was a major illness in Europe and Asia. Christopher Columbus sailed over he brought smallpoxs. The disease spread through North and South America also, the indigenous people living there. 3 million people died from this disease when it was brought to the New World. The disease is caused by a virus. It also leaves very hurtful blisters all over your body.
Next, sugarcane is another impaction of the discovery of the New World. Sugarcane came from the old world to the New World. It started the American slave trade. Mainly all the labor went the to Native Americans. Studies show that by 1600 95% of Native Americans in the Caribbean and Atlantic Coast populations were be dead, mainly due to disease and labor (palomar.edu). Also in 1888 roughly 9 million African Americans were enslaved in the Americas. The Caribbean plantations dominated in sugarcane and slaves, but Brazil was always dominate in that stage.
A large sugarcane shifted across the Atlantic to America after Columbus' second return to the new world.
Last, syphilis is another impaction of the discovery of the New World. On his journey back from the New World he brought back this killer illness. New skeletal evidence suggests Columbus and his crew not only introduced the Old World to the New World, but brought back syphilis as well, researchers say(livescience.com). Syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum bacteria. It is curable now with antibiotics. Untreated it can damage the heart, brain, eyes and bones. People are still trying to find out where this illness started and the earliest recorded illness of syphilis was in the 1400s.
