An Inconvenient Truth

When oceans get warmer, harsher storms form. The moisture content and wind capacity increases of a hurricane as it goes over warmer waters (could be convection). As the storm goes over those water, the energy from the water particles in the ocean transfer the energy into the water particles in the air, transferring its heat into the air which causes these catastrophic natural disasters. The hurricanes are considered convection cycles since they draw out the heat from the water into the air (also for previous explanation). The convection process is also found in other natural disasters like tornados. Not only do the natural disasters use convection to transfer energy, the currents and the wave rotation also uses convection. When the wave currents moved near the polar ice caps, its temperature would drop because the heat from the water as its moving transfers its energy, making the water's temperature lower. As shown in the movie, ice ages occur when the water temperature stays constant and does not go up or down. Without the change in temperature, the balance of the water and ice will be nonexistent.

Conduction was shown in the film when talking about the polar ice caps and the sun ray is relation to them. As the sun's rays pass the atmosphere and hit the polar ice caps, the light reflects off the ice and goes back into space. When light hits water, the result is different---the water absorbs the light and obtains the heat. The energy transferred into the water gets absorbed by the ice caps, which makes the ice caps melt. This process is a result of conduction. Water is an effective conductor of energy because the particles are close enough to touch each other without being stuck to each other and they transfer energy well. The global warming is not making the situation any better; the conduction of energy from water to the ice makes the ice melt and raises the sea level, which would cause detrimental damages to coastal shorelines. Conduction with the water and the ice is slowly melting away the ice caps and based on quantitative inferences, within the next 40 years, the ice caps might diminish by 40%.
