About Me: “I Think of myself as Competent and Passionate”

As an individual, I think of myself as competent and passionate. I always seek to achieve the best I can and try to be on task as much as possible. I am also passionate about my subjects of interest and constantly read up to improve my understanding of the topics. In terms of academics, I see myself as a very determined and meticulous individual, hence why I knew all along that a degree at university would be the definite next step for me. I have a broad interest in many other topics such as psychology and mathematics, yet I’ve always felt drawn towards a law or business orientated degree for my further studies since I was a young girl.

With regards to Business, the reasoning behind my choice is the complex yet intricate nature of the subject. I particularly enjoy the way business aptly blends in with everyday issues. Since taking Economics at A-Level, my interest has grown and matured and I am able to view many businesses analytically and make suggestions regarding possible improvements. Since my father has started his company a few years before I was born, I have been able to witness first hand how a company grows and improves while simultaneously learning the diverse operations that take place to keep the workflow running fluently. I also have an interest in being able to expand my knowledge of business and explore different disciplines such as law and sociology to help understand every aspect of business management. I believe that versatility, innovative thinking and the utilization of technology are now intrinsic to managing businesses. I have enjoyed the range of sixth form study that has taught me to pave the solution to problems from different economical and psychological perspectives. I have read up on real-life business solutions and how they have been implemented. My mother used to work at Coca Cola and she taught me about the responsive marketing used by them to prolong their business cycle and sustain long-term profitability.

Law is an area which has been of interest to me from an early age. I enjoy extensive reading especially in social cases and recognise that this is vital in studying law. I consider myself to be applicable to study law as I think of myself as a punctilious individual and take pleasure in reading up on works that bring up social issues in today’s society especially as a woman in the twenty-first century I have an interest in real-world situations which involve women in business such as the unfair gender pay gap. It also requires the skill to manipulate evidence and present persuasive arguments which is something that I will pick up through my time of studying a topic like Law in university. I believe that the psychology A-Level I have taken has aided me in being able to observe the actions of others and how their opinions and memories are influenced by external factors. This area of work requires much confidence which I believe I possess and can hone through furthering my studies which can be used to my advantage in order to gain recognition in this competitive field of work.

My educational experiences have helped shape me into the person I am today. When I was in secondary school I was placed in the lowest set in Mathematics, and even though I felt discouraged I knew at the time that I was able to achieve better as long as I worked hard for it. From then onwards, even though Mathematics was still challenging for me, which was what truly caught my interest, through steady practice and finding new ways to help solve the problem. I was able to go from an E to an A for the GCSE O Levels. For this reason, evaluating and solving problems have both become an enthusiasm of mine. Thankfully for me, these skills form the foundation for my choice of a business or law degree.

My position of being the vice-captain of the golf team in secondary school has paved the way for me to get better at gaining confidence while developing my communication skills. My management skills were also enriched through my time as the vice-captain I oversaw operational tasks, prioritize workloads, build consensus and performed other executive duties as necessary. Practising these skills taught me how to use my skills for the overall advantage of my group.

I’ve also always had an interest in the Chinese language. I come from Singapore which is a bilingual country, I took my GCSE O Level Chinese in Singapore in which I was able to achieve both a distinction in the oral exam and an A. Though subsequently, I did not end up taking Chinese as an A level here in the UK, I still try my best to constantly enrich myself by reading Chinese books and watching movies. I also make the time to communicate with my parents and my grandparents in my mother tongue so I’m able to practice fluency and pronunciation. I have always been proud of my culture and try my best to educate my fellow schoolmates about our many traditions. For example, I helped host a Chinese New Year activity at my house to help the girls understand more about the tradition.

I am also very keen on sports especially golf, I have been playing competitively since age 7 and I try to get out on the course as much as I can even though I am no longer on home ground. I have represented my secondary school for 4 years and for my country club’s ladies’ team for 2. I also played individually in several competitions back in Singapore. I was awarded several trophies and medals for my various accolades at the sport. As part of the golf team at St Swithun’s, I try to encourage my friends to pick up golf recreationally so we are able to take the time and unwind from our hectic schedules at school. The fashion industry has caught the eye of me in recent years. My entrepreneurial side has also come into play here, where I have bought several outfits that are on sale in the UK and resold it for a slightly higher price in Singapore as there is not only a greater demand but also a chance to make a small profit due to the lack of the shipping fee when shipped locally and it was convenient to bring back to Singapore on my trips back. I sold them with the aid of social media such as Instagram to garner attention and my friends helped me promote my items as well to the right target groups which are teenage girls around my age group.

In conclusion, I am fortunate enough to be able to choose a subject to study that I have a genuine passion for especially the pivotal life lessons and the chance to lead an independent life at university appeals to me. I am aware that no amount of teachings would equip me for the real-life working world. All the more I am keen to learn more about the corporate world, but I am even more resolved to become a part of it. My long-term plan is to create my own business and I am confident that the education that I will attain from studying this course will facilitate my chance to be able to fulfil my dream.
