Cosmetic surgery has increased more and more in the recent years due to the pressure that social media gives in order for others to think that one has to become and look a certain way the fit within society's standard of beauty. Cosmetic surgery also known as plastic surgery is where one's appearance is improved or modified through surgery. Cosmetic surgery is popular and very controversial because half of Americans believe that people who choose to go through cosmetic surgery or seem to be conceited, not pure or authentic, and are somewhat lacking in self-confidence (Cosmetic Surgery). However cosmetic surgery gives people with self-esteem issues, people with birth defects, and those involved in accident a boost of confidence as it also enhances their physical and mental well-being so that they can live a better and happier life.

Cosmetic surgery can help with self-esteem issues because today many people are concerned with their physical appearance in relation to society's current beauty standards. People's physical appearance has a direct relation to their self-esteem and how confident they are in themselves in their professional and personal lives (Foustanos et al.435). Younger people are trying to conform to acceptable standards due to social pressures through social media and television. Individuals with body and self-esteem issues were identified to have high levels of social phobia, stress, low self-esteem, low self-image, and bad mood swings appeared to have decreased after cosmetic surgery and has had an increase in their self-esteem, social acceptance in their surroundings and their workplace. The desire for more balanced and harmonious appearance comes from the goal of having more career opportunities in to adjust more easier in social surroundings (Foustanos et al. 436).

One way the cosmetic surgery can help those with birth defects, and those involved in accidents is Reconstructive Surgery. This type of surgery is achieved by repairing, reshaping, and improving a complex body structure that has been affected by birth defects, developmental abnormalities, traumas and injuries, infections, tumors commas and diseases. Reconstructive surgeons main goal through this is to mend a specific part of the body back to normal. However, at the same time they try to reduce the appearance of the initial wound or defect you may have. Reconstructive surgery is split into two categories: congenital and acquired conditions. Congenital conditions are presented at birth and include cleft lip and palate, birthmarks, ear defects for prominent or constricted ears, a defect of the urethra and baby boys, cranial and facial defamations, and birth defects of the hands. Acquired conditions form and occur after birth, they can involve disease and infection, or mainly accidents and injuries. Such as cancer infection, burns and hand surgery. Reconstructive surgery is used to treat a wide range of conditions (Reconstructive Surgery).

According to plastic surgeon Adam Tattelbaum, M.D. plastic surgery patients can gain a great amount of benefits that can be life-changing. Firstly, improved breathing is a benefit of plastic surgery, Rhinoplasty makes it easier to breathe by fixing a deviated septum and letting air move in and out freely. Patients report that for the first time in years say that they are able to get a full night's sleep, and because oxygen flows more freely, they have more energy. Secondly, is better vision droopy and heavy eyelids makes it hard to see in focus. Getting Blepharoplasty gets rid of that excess tissue and skin that's weighing your eyelids down because of surgery you can see better and easier. Thirdly, you have less back, shoulder, and neck pain, this can be the first step to a more active lifestyle. A tummy tuck tightens the abs muscles and reduces the amount of weight and skin that your body is dealing with. Breast reduction surgery can prevent chronic back, shoulder and neck pain, headaches, and prevent skin irritation. Fourthly, it can help with the maintenance of your weight loss and this can lead straight to a better self-image because when you see how good you look you will be more motivated to keep that shape of your body. Some other factors that can be life changing from plastic surgery are an increase self-confidence to less social anxiety (The Health Benefits of Plastic Surgery).

With cosmetic surgery comes with risks, such as nerve damage, scarring, surgical errors, infections, blood loss, and even death. Mental illness is something that also comes with these cosmetic surgeries because some see an abnormality or deficiency in their appearance and undergo different procedures. This mental illness is called Body Dysmorphic Disorder also known as BDD (Cosmetic Surgery). People can obtain debt from trying to gain the appearance that they want in order to be happy with themselves. For some of the most popular surgical procedures including breast reductions, liposuction, tummy tucks, eyelid surgery, and rhinoplasty the cost can range anywhere from $3,026 to $5,992 (2017 Average Surgeon/Physician Fees) alone because when you add in anesthesia, faculty fees, medical history, and the difficulty of the procedure the price can rise to $10,000 and higher (Cosmetic Surgery). Despite that being true every surgery comes with risks, some more riskier than others and having the chance to become addicted to something this happens to us in everything we do. If you are unable to pay for your cosmetic procedure, then your insurance may be able to pay for some of it depending on the insurance company and the procedure.
