How does Culture Affect Society?

When humans are growing up, is culture a necessary asset to forming one’s personality? There are multiple sides to this argument. Culture is necessary for raising a child. However, that shouldn’t define who the child becomes Children should be able to be their own person, and not have to worry about having to act a certain way just because that is what their culture says they should do. children shouldn't feel obligated to act and look like everyone else in their culture. Culture influences human learning, and when a student with a different culture enters the classroom sometimes, they speak another language. The language and behaviors for each student differs. “And for many students the language at home is so divergent that entering school is like going into a foreign country and speaking a new language.” (Futterman,2015)

When humans grow up without culture, do they invent it? Paleoanthropologist “Ian Tattersall” says that you should not think of human beings as independent of culture and their society. Humans shouldn’t be judged on their culture. They should be able to be a person, and not have to act like their culture says they should. In regard to education, teachers should have consideration for the students who don’t speak the language of the school. Not all students are the same culture or speak the same language of the majority, and sometimes students or even teachers take advantage of that. Most teachers are not accounting for how culture will impact the student’s ability to participate in class and it would impair how well they learn and how much information they obtain. Some students also may come from a household where they are to be “seen not heard”, so the students don’t feel comfortable speaking up, or speaking up could be considered disrespectful in their culture. (Pusey,2018)

Child development is a long interactive process. Each and every child is unique and has a different way of learning and interacting with the world around them. What the children take in from others, shapes how they think and behave. Children growing up in different cultures receive specific inputs from the environment around them. And that is the reason that there are so many cultural differences in the children’s beliefs and behaviors. Language is one of the many ways that influence children’s development. Languages influence how people think and reason. From early infancy mothers tend to talk to their children differently. In an article on a website called “the conversation” they say that German mothers tend to focus on the things that their infants needs or just them as a person. Mothers of a tribal group called “NSO” on the other hand they focus more on how their children influence people and the world around them. This Is a perfect example of how mothers with different cultures raise their children differently. Therefore, the children have a different outlook on the world once they enter the classroom or learning environment. (Huang,2018)

Each classroom is different. Every single child learns in a unique and different way. The experience each student has in the classroom proves this. Most educators can talk about the learning differences of the children, whether it’s the name of the learning style or cognitive styles, physological type, or multiple intelligence. Students who are learning bring their own approach to the classroom. They also bring their own different talents and interests into the classroom. The individual learners background or family culture into their learning, and it affects them, and how they intake information. (Manitri,2013)

In an article on a website called “the advocate” it talks about the cultural differences and how it affects the way human look at earth, and the way they learn. It says Asian children see the world in terms of the relationship between things where as American children see the world in terms of the objects as distinct entities. There are a bunch of different theories. The “cultural deficit theory” says that some students do bad in school because the linguistic, social and cultural nature, does not prepare the child for the work the child will be required to do in school. For example, some students may not have as many books to read at home as other students in different homes would. Not being able to read has a negative effect on the child's vocabulary skills and or vocabulary development. Vocabulary development may also be stunted by the amount of verbal interaction at home. some children are being verbally and physically abused at home which has a negative effect on the child. The child will be mentally affected by this, therefore stunting their learning ability. As a result, some students arrive to school lacking the vocabulary development that they are expected to have. The “expectation theory” focuses solely on how teachers treat the students with different cultures. Teachers often expect less from students of different racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. When teachers expect students with different races to perform poorly than they lower the standards of what they expect from the student and they teach how little they expect the student to know. At this rate, the students then preform to the low standards the teachers expect from them. They tested this theory and they told a teacher that some of the children had racial or cultural differences and the children who were expected to learn at a certain level preformed higher than the students who weren't expected to learn very much. The “cultural difference theory” is based on the idea that students who are raised in different cultural settings may approach education and learning in different ways. It is important for teachers to be aware of the differences between the school atmosphere and the home environment. People from different cultures may have an approach to education that is different from the usual approach used in American schools. “For instance, differences can be noted in the Polynesian concept of learning, whereby younger children are generally taught by older children rather than by adults.” This is a very different approach to learning and an approach that may need to be considered in an American school that is attended by Polynesian students. This would probably help the students perform better. (lynch,2018)

There are some limitations resulting from the use of Wikipedia and using Wikipedia as a source. The styles of learning are influenced by how culture socializes with its children and young people. Some scholars believe that cultural learning differences may be responsible to the physical environment in the areas in which a culture was initially founded. All of these environmental differences consist of climate, migration patterns, war, agricultural suitability, and endemic pathogens. Cultural learning allows individuals to gather skills that they would be unable to rather than if they were doing it independently. Cultural learning is thought to be particularly just for humans. Humans learn things from a very young age compared to adults. On the basis of cultural learning, people create, remember and deal with ideas. Humans understand and apply certain things of their culture in their everyday learning. This helps sometimes, but it can also be bad. Considering there are a lot of racist people who may not agree with the other persons culture and feel the need to voice their opinion.
