During the second world war families would spend their spare time doing many things. Such as the radio, the radio was a form of entertainment, and during the war time, more started to tune in and listen. They also went to the cinema, it was a extremely popular pastime. Millions of tickets were sold weekly. The most popular movie during the time was “Gone With the Wind.” Families would also spend their evenings at the theater, once it opened up again, because most were closed during the outbreak of the war.
During the war people had many hobbies they enjoyed. A lot of boys and men, and some girls would go out and enjoy the outdoors. They would go fishing, hunting, hiking, and camping. Others liked doing art, they’d spend their time on photography, knitting, crochet, woodworking, artwork (such as painting and war posters), and stamp collecting. And many young kids would build their own model boats and planes, and test them. They’d fly them, and float them on rivers, lakes, and ponds.
“American Culture 1940s and Now”
Family in the 1940s were held to a high standard. You were supposed to have a strong, nuclear family, with a bread-winning father, and a child bearing mother. That became not just an ideal, but an expectation. However, that was not the case. The war was not bring the households together, just crippling them because of all the challenges they suddenly had. Some of the challenges included: shortage of housing, schooling, and child-care facilities.
Coming out of World War II, America was not very religious. They had a halt on things that increase religiosity, more particularly marriage and procreation. Churches and other organizations, were slowed by drain on resources and volunteers during the war. Although you would think religion was more vibrant in the past, but religion can rise and fall just like thing do over time. America and people of the 1940s was about as religious as today.
During the war they played important roles both at home and in uniform. Not only did they give their sons, husbands, fathers, and brothers to the war effort, they gave their time, energy, and a few even gave their lives. During that time women were being slowly employed into industries. But others thought they should not be put to work, but stay to being good wives and mothers and have more babies. When the war did begin quick marriages became normal, as did teenagers marrying their “sweethearts” before they left. As they guys were gone they were supposed to manage the household and some of the men's duties.
