Respect and Responsibility in Faith Respect and responsibility play important roles in my life. As a young Catholic woman, I try to live my life by the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Matthew 7:12). This Catholic principle of treating others as you would like to be treated encompasses a responsibility to respect other humans. As Catholics, we have responsibility to respect life.
It is important to respect human life as well as animal and plant life. I try in my daily life to respect my peers, my teachers and myself. I try to lead by example by showing my elders respect, helping them when they need help and caring for everyone. I treat my peers the way I would like to be treated. I speak kind to them and I do not bully them. Even when I feel disrespected and bullied I do not disrespect others. I hope that when I speak to my teachers with respect this will cause a chain reaction for others to do the same. I respect myself. I take pride in everything I do. I work hard in school to get the best education I can. I do not only do this for myself, I also do it out of respect for my parents who work hard to send me to a Catholic school where I get my faith-filled education. I have a responsibility to my parents to be the best person I can be.
My parents show me unconditional love and respect, and my grandparents show my parents the same. Seeing generations of respectful Catholics makes me aspire to be like them. In Genesis 1:26, God said “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” This quote shows that God gave humans the responsibility to watch over animals, plants and insects. I respect the Earth. I have a responsibility to follow God’s wishes by respecting animals and plant life. I try to do my best to conserve water, recycle and make the world a better place for generations to come. If we do not take care of the Earth right now generations of humans will suffer in the future.Jesus showed us the importance of taking care of others and of the world around us. He respected everyone from the sinners, to the lepers and the sick.
I try to walk in the light of the Lord and continue to do his work. I have a responsibility to respect others and to live my life by the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Matthew 7:12). This Catholic principle of treating others as you would like to be treated encompasses a responsibility to respect other humans and I will continue doing this for years to come.
