According to the Huffington Post, on average a person blinks 15-20 times per minute, 1200 times per hour, and 28, 000 times a day. How many times does Marilyn Leisz close her eyes 0. We use our eyelids to blink, sleep, and if feeling festive some of us may put eyeshadow on them. For Marilyn Leisz those normal activities are a heavy feat. According to ABC News, Merilyn Leisz was unsatisfied with her first eyelid surgery which left bumps on her eyelids, and she decided to undergo another cosmetic surgery that would remove the bumps. When she awoke the bumps were gone, but her eyelids were unable to be shut. Now, she's battling the great probability of glaucoma and blindness.
As I look into the eyes of all of my fellow college students, I would like to challenge you to love the way you look today, tomorrow and the next day Never feel the need to get cosmetic surgery to improve your appearance.
Thesis: Because cosmetic surgery should not be used for the purpose of enhancing one's appearance.
Because Cosmetic procedures are...
III. trends that come and go
Cosmetic surgery is not reliable.
Ladies and Gentlemen we live in the year 2018, a year where butt implants, lip injections, and breast augmentations are the new frontier! Some people nowadays talk about getting a new butt like they talk about getting new shoes.
But what's not so talked about, is when the surgeries don't go as planned.
Renee Talley, a fellow candidate for E! Entertainment's hit show botched, needed surgery to correct her butt implants. Before getting her implants she was going through a midlife crisis, and thought getting a new butt would solve all of her problems.Well it wasn't until 6 months after getting her surgery that the silicone from the implants started to spread from her butt up to her back, and even down her legs. She underwent surgery to remove the silicone, and then quickly afterwards received another surgery to put implants in her butt for the second time. Of course, that didn't go so well and shortly afterwards she got them removed, according to the hit show, Botched.
As you can see, cosmetic surgery isn't reliable, and it shouldn't be your go to when trying to enhance your appearance.
Secondly, Cosmetic surgery is dangerous.
A sales pitch on cosmetic surgery may sound like this... Getting cosmetic surgery is great!
With a procedure called Botox in minutes those frown lines can disappear
With a face lift procedure you can look 12 years younger...
Getting Rhinoplasty, a common nose procedure, can make your huge nose appear smaller and more beautiful than it has ever looked.
But it will never sound like this
Botox is a procedure that can reduce frown lines by injecting a toxin called botulism in which paralyzes the muscles in your face. This can cause muscle weakness, vision problems, trouble speaking or swallowing, trouble breathing and controlling your bladder... According to Mayoclinic.com, a health care company.
A face lift can make you look 12yrs. younger but according to Mayo Clinic can cause blood clotting in tissues, hair loss, skin loss, and nerve damage.
A nose job can make your face appear to be thinner but again according to Mayo Clinic, may result in some difficulty breathing.
When you clearly list the dangers of cosmetic surgery the offer doesn't seem so appealing.
Thirdly and most importantly for this age group, cosmetic surgery trends come and they go.
In the 1960s skinny was in. Dieting and having less in your body was having more to the public. Therefore at that time, society catered more to a person with a skinnier frame. According to Timeline.com a website dedicated to history, the 60s had iconic fashion models like Twiggy, to thank for headlining a skinnier frame.
Well in the year 2018 making the body fuller, more plump and curvier is in. And we have celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Blac Chyna, Nicki Minaj and Cardi B to thank for that.
The problem with having society to determine what is appealing or not, is that society changes faster than we can alter our bodies.
For example the t.v personality, entrepreneur, social media mogul and fashion icon that is Kylie Jenner, is the celebrity that had people flocking into aesthetic practices to get lip injections. According to Hollywoodreporter, an entertainment magazine, Kylie has recently had them removed.
For those people who only received temporary lip fillers that's great news. For those who have had permanent lip augmentation that is not so great news.
This is what I mean when I say cosmetic surgery trends come and go. Since people choose to get cosmetic surgery based off of what is popular, they should not get cosmetic surgery at all.
As you can see, cosmetic procedures should not be used for the enhancement of one's appearance. People get cosmetic surgery to look and feel better, but they're better off loving who they are without cosmetic surgery. This is because cosmetic surgery is not reliable, is dangerous, and cosmetic surgery trends are just a phase. For the students sitting in this classroom today, I challenge you to love the way you look without cosmetic surgery today, tomorrow and the next day.
