In a healthcare facility, it is important that managers are able to identify the determinant factors that affect the process of planning, implementation and evaluation of health interventions. It is a fact that these determinants influence health intervention measures as every individual have their own cultures and values. It even applies to both patients and the healthcare employees as well. This is merely because man is a social being, and that everything that a person does somehow affects another person. It is then the job of the managers to meet each side halfway through, in a neutral manner, while maintaining the quality of services from the healthcare employees as well as satisfying the clients with the healthcare needs. Demographic distribution of population Population in itself means the number of people living in a specific area. In most cases, the city is said to be densely populated compared to the rural areas. This is because people tend to live near where there are lots of job offers and more opportunities to earn a living. The city in this sense is called the urban community. The progression of the latter is said to be faster than in rural areas where farming, or fishing and other simpler forms of earning a living is the main source of income. Restaurants, apartments, grocery stores, offices, malls and etc. also compete in serving the dense population, thereby increase in the number of buildings are seen, inviting more and more people to work and live in the area. However, the cost of living also increases where the need arises. That is the law of supply and demand. Healthcare facilities also tend to look at the population need for healthcare services. Since there is a greater chance of having more clients, the healthcare companies invest in more sophisticated machineries and high technology procedures in order to attract clients to the business. Not only that, highly specialized professionals such as doctors, nurses and the like, tend to work in these areas where the demand for the services is high. Of course there is higher revenue for the healthcare institution, and higher income for the people working in the company. On the other hand, the healthcare delivery system in the rural areas tend to be simpler and fewer because not much people need it due to few population in the area. Still, healthcare institution is a business even if it is run by the government. So what happens is that, the complicated cases of illnesses are being referred to bigger hospitals in the city, transported through helicopters and ambulance. Political Values Political values as defined by many, is a collective expression of ideas by a social class, race community or a country. As a whole, the principles and standards accepted in a given class is openly voiced out. There are different political values in different countries. For instance, in the country like the Philippines, euthanasia or assisting suicide in not allowed and is socially differentiated. It is believed that the end of life is determined by the Supreme Being, as He has determined the beginning of life. In other countries such as the United States of America, particularly in Oregon, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Colombia, and it used to be in Australia, assisted suicide is legally permitted with some conditions that apply. However, this issue continues to be debated by the different non-government organizations as well as concerned groups and citizens having a different stand on the view of euthanasia. Religious Beliefs It is difficult to interfere with different customs and beliefs of a certain race or community. The healthcare interventions in the old times are mostly based on what is believed to have inflicted the disease, whereas in modern times, scientific evidence and explanations are already available which mostly contradicts with the interventions of the old times. Up until the present, these beliefs have been handed over from generation to generation, making it uneasy to correct the mistakes of the past. Traditional people become gatekeepers and stick to what is the usual thing. Still, it has something to do with the gods or spirits that is believed to punish or give blessings to the people. The impact is greatly seen in the number of mortality and morbidity in places where people are not open to scientific explanations and new healthcare practices. If something good happens, they credit them to the gods or spirits, but if something bad happens, these people think that it is a punishment from the spirits because of not following what is the traditional way. Human values Human values are silent desirable goals in which people aspire to attain. These are said to be beliefs that are entangled together with emotions of an individual. With this idea, human values become the standards and criteria of a certain community. In the healthcare setting, human values is to be given emphasis in the formulation and adoption of health interventions as success of the said interventions lie on the compassion and heart full delivery of healthcare services by the employees and staff. In most healthcare facilities, the diverse culture of clients and employees gives a great impact on the management on creating health interventions. Equality despite the diversity is to be taken seriously. All people have to receive the same quality of service despite the differences culture and values of the individual. Ethnicity Generally, ethnicity refers to ancestral origin, social and/or a national experience. It also has something to do with the history, language, ideology, cuisine, dressing and physical appearance of people. Put them all together, will describe the ethnicity of a person. In a multi-cultural country like New Zealand, it poses a great challenge for the managers of healthcare companies to maintain a positive impact of the said determinant to the facility as well as the people enjoying the services. The influence of ethnicity towards the health interventions is that the flexibility of the staff and individuals working in the company must be of high degree, considering a high level of respect and acceptance for people of different ethnicity. For instance, there are ethnic people who are exclusively vegetarians, while others are rice eaters. Upon knowing everyone’s preference, it may be easy to deal with clients who are admitted in the hospitals, or with the residents in the rest homes Tradition Different countries have a variety of tradition that the employees of the healthcare institutions must consider. However, this should not interfere with other people’s activities while maintaining respect and dignity of the other. Healthcare companies must accept and understand the different traditions, regardless of whether it is against one’s own tradition or the other way around. The clients have to be served what is due of him in regard with his own rights to continue promoting his traditions in life. People have that right to individuality, where he does not need to follow what he believes is against his tradition. In the same manner, he does not have to convince others to follow his traditions. All he needs is the respect for his activities. Overall, it is safe to say that the diversity of mankind is not a hindrance to quality healthcare services. The determinants mentioned are just challenges for the companies to follow in order to respect the differences of every person. These factors even protect the clients and the employees in the healthcare facility in a way. Whenever there is respect for the uniqueness of an individual, then there is harmony in the workplace. Peace and love in the healthcare facility will prevail. After all, we are but one family living in one world, breathing the same air, and enjoying life as a gift from a greater Being.
