Helping others has always been a big part of my life. It began at the age of six when I joined the Girl Scouts as a Daisy. I am currently a senior in high school, going into my thirteenth straight year in the Girl Scouts as an Ambassador, which is the name for my age group in the organization. As a girl scout, I have had many opportunities to serve the community, such as running workshops or events, collecting needed supplies for organizations, or making cards to send overseas to active duty military personnel. For the bronze award, my troop organized an event at a farm for kids with special needs. They were able to do many fun horse related activities, such as a cart ride, finger painting the horses, and making treats to feed the horses. There was nothing more satisfying than being able to make these kids' day and hear them say "thank you" to us as they left.

As a counselor at Long View Ranch, located in Tennessee, I have been provided with an opportunity to serve others. I have been blessed to work at the camp for the past three years, and the experience has helped me grow as an individual. Long View is a safe haven for anyone who stays there; it is a place free of judgment and full of love. I have witnessed many miracles there first hand. Seeing kids' lives change in a matter of a week is nothing short of spectacular. Many of the kids are from Florida's foster care system. For most of them, this was their first experience at summer camp and seeing a mountain. They always arrive timid, sticking close to the people who came with them, but by the end of the week, they are laughing, beaming ear-to-ear, and mingling with the other campers. Being a counselor to some of these kids is a truly humbling experience, and being able to care for them and show them that someone cares about them is the most rewarding aspect of the job.

My involvement with the youth group at church has also provided me with plenty of opportunities to serve the surrounding community. For instance, the youth group helps run vacation bible school and the fall festival. Through both of these events, we are able to reach out to the families around us, providing a fun day of games, food, and socializing. It is awesome to be able to reach out to the local community and provide clothing, food, and school supplies for them throughout the year. FSU's goal to encourage service is most appealing to me, since I myself enjoy volunteering and helping others. It is great to know that I will continue to have the opportunity to do so while at the university.
