Recently, NASA cancelled this all women spacewalk, because of there were some issues involved in the availability of spacesuit on the ISS. Some women can only wear medium size spacesuit, but there is currently only one at the space. So this woman will be replaced with a man who can wear a bigger spacesuit. (Patel 2019) In my perspective, I think it’s not decision biased, appropriate spacesuit is very important for everyone, if not, inappropriate spacesuit will hurt astronauts. On the ground, they will wear spacesuit in training, when they are on orbit, their size will be change, because the microgravity environment in orbit may caused them to grow 1 or 2 inches taller. So for women’s safety, they have to cancel it and make more appropriate spacesuit for women in the future.
NASA is more inclusive and focused on women than ever before. This cancellation will bring more opportunities to the next female spacewalk, because NASA will make more appropriate spacesuit for female. This will not effect future women training to become astronauts. Also it will attract more aerospace engineers, they will think NASA very need more engineers who will use their knowledge to enhance aerospace technology. Moreover, this will not deter women from working with NASA, or wanting a job in this field. Because, they are very passionate about aerospace technology and science. Female want to prove themselves through their efforts, so they will work harder. Also this will not affect people’s enthusiasm of this field, they will do their best to contribute science.
Does Katherine Johnson’s experience relate to Anne McClain and Christina Koch? Compare and contrast their experiences.
How would their experiences differ if they were male? How would they differ if they were a male of colour?
Katherine was one of the first black students to join the Virginia University. She was a mathematician and calculated the space equation for orbital flight and determines the landing position of the spacecraft. (Loff 2018) Anne McClain was an aerospace pilot who launched to the international space station. (Whiting 2018) Christina Koch was an engineer at the space flight centre and later served as an Antarctic researcher. (Astronaut facts 2019)
If they were male, Katherine Johnson could leave the space computer early and work as astronaut, because they think female was considered to be attention to detail and accuracy, so they are very suitable for calculating. Anne also can be a astronaut early when she graduated. Koch could use her ability to explore more science technology. They all face the gender discrimination. Moreover, if they were a male of colour, It might affect Anne and Christina’s job, because they could get some racial discrimination. For Katherine, she is black, therefore she won’t change much.
How was Katherine Johnson treated differently by bother her male and female coworkers?
Male coworkers would embarrass her, they think she shouldn’t be here that male dominated industries, because of she is female. Her female coworkers didn’t like her, they thought Katherine was so smart on calculating, and also she was black woman, so many coworkers wouldn’t like to work with her.
There are some suggestions to change these inequalities that surround women. Women are encouraged to pursue higher education. Women and men should share responsibility for their family. Women should not spend more time in family activities, they could participate into more non-traditional vocations. Moreover, some changed can people make male-dominated industries to encourage women to want to enter these fields. Schools should encourage women to take courses in Maths and Science to develop their interests. Support women’s participation in these jobs and provide them with additional career opportunities.
Women still faced glass ceiling in politics. In Finland, a major political female say that women have made great contributions in politics, they are still facing challenge by glass ceiling. (Uutiset, 2014) Because, this government is completely male-dominated, the male leader controls most power, there’s still some difference between male and female in politics. Female want to break this glass ceiling, they have to provide more evidence to show their ability. People automatically consider that men are capable simply because they are male.
6) She had excellent computing skills, so that made her boss reuse her and let her participate in the project on the moon. She worked very hard and she overcame various challenges and made her colleagues accept that she could work with them. In her workplace, she had go to the other side of the campus just to use the bathroom, because she did not allow the use of the bathroom near her, she is African American. She was fearless, she changed the rules and helped African Americans and whites to work as one, instead of using each other. (Sarolia, 2018) Also, she tried everything, she worked very hard through the dark times. She didn’t care about their race or colour, she just wanted to do math. It was also her math skills attract more people. So, that’s why she can change it.
