The year is divided into four seasons. Everybody enjoys the different seasons in their own way, but everyone is happy with the onset of winter or summer. Winter is the coldest season and occurs between autumn and spring. Summer is the warmest season. It happens between Spring and Autumn during the months of June, July and August. Winter and summer are challenging to compare, although one can find a lot of positive qualities in both seasons of the year.
Both seasons have an effect of laziness on people because of its extreme cold and heat. However, each season possesses their own peculiarities and moods. Children are always excited for winter. This Season attracts people with the beauty of the decoration of trees, streets, and the surrounding world as a whole, covering everything with a white fluffy blanket of snow. In winter, it’s as if all of nature falls asleep with a sweet dream, to bloom again in the spring. Children love the winter season because of all the different things that can be done in the snow and cold, along with the great holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. When snow falls, everyone rushes to the yard to make igloos, snow angels, and snowmen. Young children to adults love to make snow masterpieces and enjoy the pleasure of winter. In addition, in good sunny weather, with a slight frost, people can ski, sled, go to a skating rink to play hockey or even take a walk through the parks, breathing in the frosty air.
Sometimes, near the holidays, you can hear Christmas Carols being sung in the neighborhoods. These sounds, along with the snow falling, gives you a fairytale feeling. Every person knows how beautiful it is when walking in the snow, street lights reflecting a warm glow on the streets. The sky is full of stars, sparkling like trillions of small diamonds. The cold can be hard to deal with but with warm boots, bulky sweaters, scarfs, mittens and warm coats anyone can enjoy the weather. It's very nice to come home from enjoying the cold weather and drink hot chocolate, watching a blizzard from your window.
Summer is the time when flowers bloom and the trees look greener than before. There are gardens growing with an abundance of fruits and vegetables. The air is full of numerous smells of flowers and fruits. “Or watch honey-bees busy around the hive of a summer forenoon, or animals feeding in the fields, or birds, or the wonderfulness of insects in the air, or the wonderfulness of the sundown, or of stars shining so quiet and bright” (Whitman). Summer is also loved by many people. First, this is the time children are out of school, free from homework and learning. Both adults and children can relax and have a rest. Summer brings with it a warm sun and a variety of fun. People can go to lakes or oceans to sunbathe, swim, take a boat ride, go fishing, and soak up in the rays of the sun. On ponds and lakes, there are many birds: swans and ducks, as well as flowering lilies.
It is nice to go for walks or go camping, just live in nature. “Or wade with naked feet along the beach just in the edge of the water, or stand under trees in the woods” (Whitman). In the summer, people are positive and joyful. Only at this time of year can people see so much greenery, or flowering meadows that look like a carpet. It is possible to breathe in the smell of the flowers, listening to the sound of grasshoppers, bumblebees and dogs barking in their yards. In a thunderstorm you can run barefoot in the warm puddles.
Summer is a perfect time to go to the ocean and just listen to the sound of the waves crashing on the shore. “To me the sea is a continual miracle, the fishes that swim—the rocks—the motion of the waves—the ships with men in them, what stranger miracles are there?” (Whitman). The sea and ocean possess a magic of the summer nights, it is mesmerizing and allows you to forget everything for a while. In my own experience, every person who has just come from a summer vacation has beautiful thoughts and memories of evenings on the sand, the salty smell of the fresh sea breeze, and visions of the far stars in the dark cobalt sky.
Just like in winter, you need the right clothing to be able to enjoy the heat in summer. Light clothing, sandals, shorts and if you’re on the beach, definitely a bathing suit.
In terms of the comparing and contrasting of the winter and summer seasons, it becomes clear that every time of the year is beautiful and unique in its own way. They complement each other, bringing a variety in our lives along with specific moods and emotions. Therefore, both of the seasons are deeply connected with emotional patterns of people. Winter is Christmas and summer is sweet dreams of vacations. Also, both seasons can bring great times with family and friends during the perfect and cozy evenings of the winter time as well as perfect picnics under the starry sky of the summer nights.
To conclude everything mentioned above, winter and summer are traditionally perceived as opposite seasons of the year. These two extreme seasons have different effects on the environment and on the people. However, due to the concept of “survival of the fittest,” living things have learned to adapt every time seasons change.
Without the cold air and snow of the winter, people would not appreciate the warm days of the summer and vice versa. A diversity of the seasons give people a whole range of emotions, feelings, memories, moods and stories.
