I. When looking through this story with a feminism view point it is clearly shown that two sisters are two sides of the same coin, complete opposites.

A. Antigone strong female

1. “If my present actions strike you as foolish, let’s just say I’ve been accused of folly by a fool,” (657).

2. Antigone clearly shows that she has no respect for Creon in the slightest, she does not care that he’s a powerful male (a king) in a patriarchal society. In fact she calls him a fool to his face. Antigone’s strong empowerment and defiance shows that she has the clear characteristics of a modern-day feminist.

3. “Antigone’s defiance is threatening.”

4. Back in the day women of all ages were expected to obey their male family members and rulers included. Creon considers that he has full authority of Antigone because he is the King of her city. Antigone is expected to let Creon have absolute control over every aspect of her life but does not let it happen. The fact that Antigone would ever dare to disobey Creon is completely shocking to him.

B. Ismene weak female

1. “Remember we are women, we’re not born to contend with men,” (646).

2. This sadly shows Isemene’s point of view of women in her society as women do not have the strength to challenge men. Isemene knows that women lack power in their society and she thinks it would be completely pointless to even try to challenge or even change their structure of society. She also thinks that women are in no position to even question the laws that men have made. Isemene is clearly shown as the complete opposite of a modern-day feminist as well to her sister, Antigone.
