How Differences Caused the Civil War

Can you imagine going to war because of a disagreement that could not be solved in any other way? Sometimes disagreements are so intense or significant that the two sides can’t solve the problem without violence. The United States of America (US) has been in wars many times before. However the only time that the US has been in a war against itself was because of a conflict was the Civil War. In the late 1860s the Southern states began to secede from the original US to make their own country because they couldn’t agree on certain laws. Overall 11 states seceded from the Union. The first was South Carolina. Once the Southern states left, the war began.

The Southern states were also known as the Confederacy after they left the original US. The Southern states made their money by planting and selling crops. Soil in the south was very fertile and good for planting. The most valuable crops were tobacco and cotton. They grew their crops on plantations and they needed slave labor to do all of the hard work. Almost 80% of all slaves in the south worked on farms. The slaves were very important to the Confederacy because of all of the hard work that they did.

The North, also known as the Union, was one of the two countries during the American Civil War. The North had a lot of factories, not farms. In the factories they made textiles, leather goods and weapons. The North had no reason to use slaves like the south did because of the North’s economy. In addition, the Union did not believe in slaves like the south did. Those living in the North thought slavery was evil and wrong.

Slavery is the overall main reason there was a war. The south relied on the slavery for all of the farming that the south needed. The north spent their days working in factories without slaves in their place. The differences between using slaves and not using slaves were so significant that they had to go to war because they couldn’t agree. One of the other causes of the Civil War was states rights. The south was mad about how much power the Federal government had versus how much power or rights the states had. Also the South was against Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president. During his election he wasnt even on 10 of the Southern ballots.

The effect of all of the differences between the North and South was war. The Civil War lasted four years, 1861 to 1865. Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederacy and Robert E. Lee was the general of the Confederacy during the war. Ulysses S. Grant was the general of the Union. The first battle was fought at Fort Sumter in South Carolina In April 1861. Four years later at Appomattox Court House in Virginia General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant. The North had won!
