Amelia Earhart Character Traits

Have you ever heard about Amelia Earhart? Probably not, but that’s what this essay is about to inform you about who Amelia was and what she did to become famous. What she did was not something every girl would do. She was a very brave person.

On July 24, 1897, Amelia was born in Atchison, Kansas. She had one sister, and her name was Grace. Edwin, her dad, was a lawyer who worked for the railroad, and her mom was Amelia Otis. Her family would move from place to place often, so before she finished high school, she had already attended schools in Minnesota, St. Paul, and Springfield, Illinois. Amelia went to the Ogante School located in Pennsylvania but then dropped out so she could become a nurse’s aid tending wounded soldiers from WWI. Later on, she decided to study to become a mechanic.

Next thing you know, she decided to go back to school for a career in medicine. On December 28, 1920, Amelia had her first ride in an airplane. Right then and there, she knew what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. So she started to work to get the money until she had enough for flying lessons. After six months, she purchased her first plane that was painted bright yellow. She named it the “Canary.” Later on, she got her pilot’s license and set a new altitude record for female pilots of 14,000 feet. After that, she started setting records such as being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean on June 18, 1928. When she got back to the United States, they received her with a ticker-tape parade in New York City, and she met President Calvin Coolidge at the white house. However, she wasn’t satisfied, so she decided to fly across the Atlantic Ocean again, but this time she wanted to do it solo. Which meant it was going to be more challenging, but that didn’t stop her from accomplishing her goal. She also became the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross from Congress.

Amelia continued to break many records, but she still was not satisfied. She hoped to be the first woman to fly around the world. On June 1, 1937, Amelia and Fred Noonan took off from Miami, Florida, eventually getting across Africa and Asia to New Guinea in the South Pacific. On July 2nd went from New Guinea to fly to Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean, but they were never seen again. This is where Amelia’s story ends. Although the United States government did search for Amelia and her plane for several weeks, they were never able to find them. Hopefully, you’ve learned a lot more than what you knew before you read this.
