Review for a Job
We are all living in a world of constant movement. No matter what kind of lifestyle we occupy, humans are always changing and adapting to new situations that seem to be randomly thrown at us. In order to thrive, it is necessary for individuals to be able to accommodate to their surroundings. This is especially true in my case. Just recently, I have moved from the town I grew up in to a city I have never been to, in order to live with my husband who is stationed at Fort Carson. His plans with the military are still unknown, but I do know one thing; change is inevitable. In order to be able to provide for our household consistently throughout his military career, I had to choose a profession that will be available anywhere we happen to go. That is why I am looking for a job as a Pharmacy Technician. Starting my career as a Pharmacy Technician will set me up for advancement opportunities, job security, and most importantly, a chance to find employment wherever we will be living.
It was just recently that I decided to pursue anything in the medical field. I have not really had a “dream job”, but have always been willing to try new ideas. When I married a man in the Army, my choices seemed to be narrowed down in my mind, depending on whether or not it was a job that would be available anywhere. Soon enough I came to the decision of pursuing a Pharmacy Technician Certificate. In recent years, the average number of elderly people have increased greatly, which is due to the “Baby boom” generation reaching older ages. In return, there is a heightened need for medical personnel, including pharmacy technicians (“Pharmacy Technicians” [2008]). Along with the fact of the increased elderly population, there is also an escalation of people with chronic diseases that require numerous medications. Pharmacies will be the backbone of providing patients with the medications used to fight their diseases. The average growth rate for this particular occupation is currently 12% from 2016 to 2026, which means there will be a surplus of opportunities for pharmacy technicians to find employment in the next few years (“Pharmacy Technicians” [2018]). With all of this information available to me, going into the medical field is a great choice for my future, especially if I find a job in a valued company.
As of right now, Colorado Springs is considered home. I have not been here for long, and may not stay for long, but this is where I am choosing to start my career. After searching Colorado Springs job sites, I have narrowed my choice to a company that is well known for its care for customers, and will satisfy my needs as an employee. CVS is a company I can definitely see myself working for, and they are currently looking for pharmacy technicians. As stated on their website, CVS has core values that I live my life following as well, which include innovation, collaboration, caring, integrity, and accountability. This is all combined in order to fulfill their purpose, which is to “Help people on their path to better health.” (CVS Health). Knowing that, I am much more willing to work for this company. Not only am I looking to work in an environment that fulfills my values, but also one that will be held to a certain standard as a healthcare facility. It is vital that I will be employed by a company that will follow every code and procedure to the letter so I will be certain that I am in a position where doing the right thing is always important.
After looking around on CVS Health website, I have found that they accommodate very well to their employees. Directly on their site, the have links to where someone can apply for a position, as well as a newsletter informing interested people in job openings in their area when they become available. Along with a place to apply, they list every part of the hiring process so anyone who is wondering what comes next will not be left without any information. CVS also offers a Virtual Job Tryout, which gives an applicant a good idea of what their interview will look like, and what to expect. CVS has made looking for locations that are hiring very easy as well, with a job search bar. You simply enter the city, state, and position you are interested in, and if there are any openings, they will be shown on a list. In my search for Pharmacy Technician positions, there are plenty in the Colorado Springs area, so I seem to have quite a few options (CVS Health).
According to the CVS Health Corporation 2017 Annual Report, there has been a steady increase of net revenue since 2015. The Five-Year Financial Summary gave a good outlook of how the company will continue operating in the years to come. CVS is progressively building new locations, which opens up hundreds of new jobs every year. Indeed.com offers a place for reviews of certain jobs, along with average salaries. The reviews were a mix of different opinions, but I usually do not take them to heart, because everyone will have a different experience depending on multiple factors of their environment. The average salary for a pharmacy technician in Colorado came out to approximately $20,000-25,000, which I was expecting with only a certificate (Health, CVS). Throughout my research, I have obtained the understanding that CVS is advancing quickly, and will be a great place to begin my career in pharmaceuticals. With more schooling and a lot of time put in, CVS will be a good company to advance in.
Overall, I do believe that CVS will be a good company to work for when I am done with my schooling. They hold similar values that I do, and their mission statement; “Help people on their path to better health.”, is something I can apply to my daily life. I get the impression that CVS will be a great place to start my career, especially with the opportunity to have the stability in my crazy life as a military spouse. Being an employee at CVS will give me the opportunities I need in my future career.

Career and Job
Imagine going on stage in front of thousands of people to play a sold out show. This sounds like something that Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Post Malone, or other famous musicians do regularly, but most people do not know that this is also regular for some of the top orchestral musicians in the world. Orchestral musicians are one the last groups of people who bring classical music to the masses. Even though this may seem like an easy career, these musicians have to go through rigorous training to be competitive in this world. Being an orchestral musician is one of the hardest careers of this century.
Future orchestral musicians usually have to go through many years of education before they even have a chance of winning a job with an orchestra. Rob Knopper, percussionist with the Metropolitan Opera, explains why having a college education is important. “without school, you’d have to put all of those things together: lessons, practice, orchestra experience, music history, music theory, ear training, etc”(Knopper) Knopper is describing some of the many reasons why it is important for a musician to go to college. Without college it would be very difficult to put all of those things together and still be motivated to keep practicing. A college education is also needed to just get to the audition, most orchestras won’t let an applicant audition if they do not have at least a bachelor degree or an amazing resume. Musicians in general have to dedicate hundreds of hours to be proficient on their instrument and thousands of hours to be at the professional level. You need to start years before you even go to college to get that competitive edge.
People might see the life of an orchestral musician who as a cushy job where you only work six hours a week, but rehearsals, outside practice, teaching lessons, playing fundraisers/outreach concerts, and performances can add up to a forty hour work week. In an interview with Alex Wilborn, principal trumpet of the Charlotte Symphony, he talks about the average day of an orchestral musician. An orchestral musician can expect a few rehearsals Tuesday through Thursday, and performances Friday through Sunday and sometimes Monday(Wilborn). Then on days without performances, musicians will practice two to three hours at home. This can add up to thirty five to fifty hours a week before you add lessons most of the musicians teach. An average Friday usually includes a morning rehearsal, that lasts about two and a half hours, then they will play a concert that night.
With less and less young people going to see classical music concerts, the orchestra can be seen as a dying business/career. Smaller orchestras around the United States and the UK are experiencing a string of pay cuts and bankruptcies. The smaller orchestras usually starts musicians at about $30,000 with not a lot of growth. With such low pay n the entry orchestras, this is causing many talented musicians to not go in to the music industry, since many of them have to pay off student loans and a buy expensive instruments, and with more orchestras defuncting, there's less spots to be filled. To keep making money, orchestras have started to bring in big name guest soloists and a do special concerts, which include playing a movie score to a movie on screen.

Job Skills Necessary for Success
Businesses need to procure effective, positive workers. Beyond the capacity to carry out the activity, bosses search for individuals who fit inside the organization's way of life and coexist with the current staff. There are several different skills that are needed to be successful in whatever job you are doing. Many will tell you that you need a wide range of skills in your arsenal to be successful, which is true, but I have picked out the most important skills to perfect first before honing in on the many others.
The most important skill of all, I would say is Communication. It is the act of transferring information from one person to another, or from one place to place using either voice, writing or visually conveying the message. The capacity to discuss viably with bosses, partners, and staff is fundamental, regardless of what industry you work in. Specialists in the computerized age must know how to successfully pass on and get messages face to face also by means of telephone, email, and web-based life.
Another skill most people overlook is Critical Thinking. It is the Judicious reasoning about what to believe and therefore what to do, and understanding the logical connection between ideas. In the work environment, Critical thinking empowers one to know about the distinctive ways to deal with an issue and the capacity to assess these methodologies meticulously. It also teaches you how to evaluate and come up with evidence for any given scenario, and give appropriate points to back up your idea, which are crucial which would help in making one an effective communicator.
Lastly you have Teamwork which is known as Collaboration skills. Collaborating with other colleague, or sometimes total strangers requires a mix of interpersonal, critical thinking and communication skills. Every organization have tasks that require teamwork to get the job done. Being able to effectively work on a team enables you to complete projects much faster and efficiently, and not only that, it provides the opportunity for the employees to bond with one another, which in turn improves relations among them.
Having various skills is a plus when stepping out into the job market, but most of the skills learnt, if not all of them can be used combat day to day scenarios as well.
These I would say are just the foundation of the skill tree, and is used every day by everyone doing whatever task they are attempting to complete.

Recruitment and Selection Process on Job
“If you want to be successful in this world, you have to follow your passion, not a paycheck.” by Jen Welter. It is important that applicants apply for jobs that they are interested in and can see themselves there for a long time. There is many ways that employers can recruit and select new employees when needed.
The recruitment process is for employers to advertise current job positions that are open for their company/organization and it can be done externally and internally. (Kulik, 2004) It gives them a chance to get new/fresh minds and ideas to help make it a better work environment and to be more productive. After receiving applications from possible candidates for the position, employers will go through a process to select who they think is best for the position, this is known as the selection process. The selection process can be lengthy and done in a few different ways, although it varies from company to company.
With have been hired for two new jobs within the last six months both of these processes are very familiar to me. Being on the side that is getting hired and being put on the line, it can be very stressful and anxious to many. You constantly are waiting to hear back from an employer and then going through multiple interview sessions to be hired. At one job, there was multiple interviews (phone and in-person) and at the other it was a one quick fifteen minute interview. But as mentioned above every company has a different process in which they recruit and select someone for the position.
Advertising for the position is important because that is where you give the criteria of the persons duties. (The Open University, 2018) When it comes to recruiting candidates for an open position there is two ways that it can be handled. There is external recruitment that aims at finding someone that is not already, nor has ever been employed through the company. Or there is internal recruitment, where the position is looked to be filled by someone that is already an employee, has been a previous employee, or is someone that is referred by a current employee. (Kulik, 2004) Although both types of recruitment has there own advantages and disadvantages involved.
Beginning with the external recruitment, this way gives employers a way to reach more potential candidates. Examples of external recruitment are; print advertisement, social media, internet job sites, campus recruitment, job fairs, and many more ways. An advantage to external recruitment is that it does allow a company to add diversity into the workplace. (Human Resources, 2015) A disadvantages that come with recruiting outside the company is the cost that it takes, it can get kind of expensive. Having to pay for an ad in a newspapers or online, or paying other people to go find candidates are all ways that can eventually become very costly. (Kulik, 2004) External recruitment offers the company a way to get new talent and fresh ideas but that does not always mean that it is the best way to fill a vacancy.
Companies also tend to use internal recruitment when looking to fill vacant positions. Internal recruitment can include; employee referrals, job postings within the organization, and even rehiring former employees. (Kulik, 2004) Some advantages of internal recruitment are that the employer already knows the employee, so they know whether they are right for the position, how they work, and what their goals are. It also saves the company money from having to post the vacancy for outside candidates and having lower productivity while there is no one in the position. Some disadvantages of internal recruitment include a low diversity rate. Or sometimes with referrals the employer will offer the employee that referred someone, a bonus, and with that it can cause some issues. (Kulik, 2004) Once a company goes through the recruitment process and post their openings they move on to the selection process.
Once the job position has been posted and applications get submitted the company can begin their selection process. The selection process can include many different aspects and be done in a few different ways, it can include having a committee to review all the applicants, a single person review them, test performed, and even interviews. (Kulik, 2004) This is where they determine which candidate is the best fit for the position and who can perform the best there. If a committee is reviewing all the applicants it gives them a chance to look them all over and provide their comments on each one regarding the qualification of each. (Human Resources, 2015) They can also have the applicants take a number of test to get further information on who would be best fit for the position. These test include; the cognitive ability test (general intelligence), work sample test (hands-on, related job task), next is a personality test (determines one's personality), and finally there is the integrity test or also known as the honesty test (participate in a polygraph test). All of these test help further screen the applicants, although some of the test can be a bit costly so they are not frequently done. (Kulik, 2004) Besides the test there is other things that employers can look at to help them determine the better candidate.
Along with the pre-screening that can happen without contact with the candidate, some companies prefer to go through multiple interview processes to see as well. One way is a phone interview, this is commonly used for the employer to ask simple questions and check to see if the information on the application is accurate. Some questions that are commonly include in a phone interview may be; “What do you expect to get paid?” or “What is your availability and how when are you able to start?”. All questions asked and the responses should be recorded and kept on file for each applicant along with any other documentation throughout the process. (Human Resources, 2015) Next, comes an in-person interview, a list of questions should be developed and recorded so that it is the same throughout each candidate. There is also different ways that interviews can be conducted, they can be one-on-one, done in front of a panel, or done over a webcam to save on travel cost. (Human Resources, 2015) It is very important that no matter what interview format is chosen that someone is recording/ taking notes of the responses so that they can be later assessed. Notes can be not only on what they respond with but, also how they act or how they appear. (The Open University, 2018) Finally, after all of the test and interviews have been conducted, it is time for the panel or a human resource representative to sit down and decided which candidate is best fit for not only the position but the organization as a whole.
Although there is the traditional way of recruiting and selecting employees, times are changing and are become more technologically advanced and making it easier on employers. An article posted to HR Trends Institute, talked about the new trends that are happening during the recruiting and selection process. One of the new trends is that employers can now go online and put in the criteria that they are looking for in a candidate and that website then generates a list of candidates that best match the criteria. There is also the increase in the use of chatbots that can communicate with candidates. They are often used to ask simple questions, similar to the ones in a phone interview. (Haak, 2017) Many of these trends are often used in order to save the company time and from having to adapt around a long vacancy.
The recruitment and selection process is very much connected to human resources, it is a big part of what they do. This is the first part of introducing someone to the inside of the company, although one may be familiar with the company this is where they get the first glimpse of what it is like to work for a particular company. Typically when someone is trying to get hired for a job they are in contact the the human resource manager and/ or the head manager of the certain department. But even after being hired, the human resource representative is who employees most commonly go to with any concerns about their job. For instance if someone feels that they are performing task outside of their duties listed when hired they may go to their human resource representative to discuss the issue.
Although some companies are small and do not have that many employees, that they do not have an official human resource representative. When getting hired at one job, it was a franchise and the people that owned my store owned a few in the area, so there may have been a human resource representative for the owners but, the store manager was the one that conducted the interview and chose people to hire for the position. So in this case, the manager took on the role of being a human resource manager as well as a store manager, including having to deal with the firing of an employee or any disputes that had developed.
Overall, the human resource management team plays an important role in many aspects of a business. There are there through it all, from the very beginning to the end. They are not only there to help make their company/organization better, but are there to help and support their employees in any way possible.

My First Job
The first job one has is always special. There are many reasons for why the first job is so special. The experience will always stick with you. A first job gives you chills because you may not know how to do anything yet. Asking for a job may be a struggle for many, but after the first time, it will be easy. Lawn work during the summer is never a bad first job. Mowing lawn definitely provided me with enough money to get what I want. A first job certainly teaches you about the value of money. .
When I was about thirteen years old, I wanted to buy soccer cleats from the Nike store in Gadsden, but I barely had money. My parents did not just give me money out of the blue. I had to find a job in order to purchase the cleats I wanted. So, I thought as to who could give me work around town; to point out, I lived in the town of Collinsville, which was fairly small, with two street lights , and hardly any population; however, my neighborhood had enough people that needed help in their yards. I went to the oldest person I knew in my neighborhood, Mrs. Patty. She was roughly in her fifties, and could not take care of her garden anymore. She had a variety of flowers, an extensive grass lawn, and a few banana pepper plants. This being my first time asking somebody for a job, I was nervous. I took a deep breath and went on her two small front steps, stood tall, and knocked on the door. She answered, and I nervously asked, “Mrs. Patty, do you need help with your lawn and garden? I see it is getting pretty rough out there.” Mrs. Patty was very happy I offered her to help with her lawn. Not one time did we ever talk about how much I was going to get payed..
Therefor, my first job was to mow grass. I quickly ran back to my house, about a mile away from Mrs. Patty’s house, and got my old lawnmower to take back to her house.. After this exhausting part of the day, I went to her garden and started pulling weeds That was all I did for my first day, and it took me about two hours. I asked her much I would get paid, and she said, “I will give you $7 an hour.” It was less than I thought I would get paid, but at least I had a job.
After getting those $14, I walked the few miles to the supermarket downtown, right next to a Baptist Church.. I went to the sports section of the store, and bought some Nike soccer cleats. They were not the same ones that I wanted before, but I still liked them. One of my favorite hobbies was to play soccer; therefor, I was excited to go to the park and play a pickup game with my friends.
After many days of working for Mrs. Patty, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to save even more money for games, shoes, clothes, and many other stuff. Pulling weeds and mowing lawn was definitely not what I planned to do at the age of thirteen, but it was what I had to do in order to get what I needed and what I wanted. Afterall, the sweat and tiredness pays off at the end when at the end of the day you have a nice cold gatorade to sip from..

Interview
An Interview with Kim Hooper, Author of Cherry Blossoms Can someone truly abandon his will to survive? And if they do, how does ordinary life test that will? From the author of the critically-acclaimed debut novel People Who Knew Me comes the story of thirty-four-year-old Jonathan Krause. Determined to end his life with the dignity of the Japanese samurai, Jonathan is a man with a plan. He writes: Today is an otherwise ordinary Monday, made extraordinary by the fact that it is the beginning of my eight-month countdown. I am now a human with an expiration date. What ensues hereafter is a story that gives insight into the human soul. Prepare yourself for an emotional journey, one that is at times very funny, sometimes gut wrenching. Jonathan has just one wish. He would like to visit Japan and make it for the famed blooming of the Cherry Blossoms (his reasons, are pretty riveting and make for some solid storytelling). In preparation for his final voyage, he enrolls in a Japanese language class where he meets Riko, who has her own plans to visit her homeland, for very different reasons. The unexpected and unusual friendship leads to a trip the pair makes to Japan and let’s just say…the rest is magic. Maribel Garcia: Well, Kim, you have done it again, you have written another skillfully written novel. And I have to say, this is a such a fresh perspective on how to go about life when it feels like you just can’t go on anymore.
It must have been a challenge to write about such a controversial topic Kim Hooper: Author Response MG: Japanese lessons break the stream of Jonathan’s memories. Kim Hooper: Author Response MG: The plot culminates in a trip to Japan that takes both characters to places of reckoning. Why Japan? You seem to know so much about it and your knowledge and what Japan, as a character brought, made this novel so good. Kim Hooper: Author Response Jonathan's story and the reason he's planning to commit suicide unfolds slowly over the course of this novel and the reason for his grief soon becomes integral to the story’s plot. MG: The tremendous success of the book and Netflix series “13 Reasons Why” has shown us that there’s a hunger for literary explorations of suicide. Suicide is a major theme in your novel and it is handled very well. Personally, given that our lives seem to get more and more complicated by the day, it is nice to be able to investigate such a dark subject through fiction. What was the most challenging part about writing about this topic? KH: MG: Joanathan Kraus could be…such a jerk sometimes. I know that you have written elsewhere that while you may not always agree with your characters, you do understand their decisions. I guess that you would have to, since you create them, what was it like to write about such a flawed character? Include examples. KH: Response MG: How did you come up with Riko’s character? She is such a critical component of the story, yet tangential. The friendships formed in this book extend to the reader and you get sucked into their story. Where did the inspiration for his friend come from? KH: Response MG: 'Cherry Blossoms' is at times a deep meditation on words, life, literature, and being in the world. Was this deliberate, inserting life lessons? Or did it just organically materialize? KH: Response MG: You take what some would consider a very brave risk in adopting a male narrative voice and it pays off, giving us a fresh new perspective on men and the women who change their lives, what was doing this like? KH: Response MG: Kim, thank you so much for joining us today. We look forward to more of your writing.
Kim Hooper lives in Southern California with her husband and an absurd number of pets. People Who Knew Me is her debut novel. Ideas for Kim Hooper’s Cherry Blossoms Bio: Questions: more about living an imperfect life and coming to terms with accepting that sometimes life sucks. But sometimes it surprises you and reminds you why it's a much better idea to stick around., so much so it Not only do we learn some profoundly intimate truths about human relations, but we learn about the Japanese language on a narrative tour of Japan’s most breathtaking locales and cultural traditions. There is a revelatory authenticity to her writing with such lines as: “I’ve heard too many horror stories of bridge jumpers surviving and spending their remaining years as mute vegetables, unable to speak in response to their loved ones pained question: how the hell could you do this to us?” A beautifully written and insightful look into grief, love and despair on a very personal level. ] Something has happened to this individual and it is enough that he no longer has the will to live, so as a result, he is determined to take his own life. The way that he goes about it makes for an utterly fascinating read. With its melancholy premise, Cherry Blossoms interrogates what it means to face uncertainty. Beneath Jonathan’s exploration of suicide.

Electric Vehicle
In a petrol vehicle, you usually drive until the fuel runs out, and then you refuel. You've been doing this all your life, and you assume that you would do it with an electric car and that the waiting time would be unbearable, especially after a long day at work or whatever.
But refueling an electric vehicle is something completely different - you now have a personal gas station in your driveway and refuel every night while you sleep - you are not in line, you do not visit the dirt and breathe in the exhaust gases, you do not watch how it is refueling and waiting impatiently for the departure. Instead, you sit in your comfortable armchair, read a book or watch TV.
So the real question you should ask yourself is:
How often do you stop at a petrol station in your normal driving style in a day when you start with a full tank? If you do a lot of long-distance journeys, this may often be the case for you.
For most people, the answer is 'almost never'. And this is how it feels for electric car drivers who are charged at home. Every day starts with a full charge (I limit this to ~ 80% of the capacity so that I can brake fully regeneratively and have good battery health in the long term). It is very rare that I have to do more than that on a normal day.
I only visit charging stations on long journeys. In such situations, a moderate rest is welcome after driving the full range on a train. Some of the best compressors have a fully equipped A / C lounge with nice bathrooms, vending machines, a cafe with live baristas, etc. These are strategically located, such as Kettleman City, between LA and SF. Charging can also be faster than you might think. Here is my M3LR drawing 149 of the maximum 150 kW in Truckee, for 638 mi / hr (1027 km / h) that will be added.
If you run in at 10% and charge to 80%, that's about 220 miles (354 km) that you'd add to the long range M3 battery, and just over 20 minutes at top speed. But here's something else - you don't have to wait all the time if you don't want to. You only need enough juice to reach the next supercharger. So if you feel like driving instead of taking a break, you can probably start earlier. You can decide for yourself how much buffer you feel comfortable with. If you become too aggressive, the car will warn you about the lack of fuel - in this case, you can increase your range by driving more slowly.
To sum up, everyone is suppressed by the drudgery at the gas station, so it is understandable that you don't want to spend any more time there. The reality is that a long-range electric vehicle that charges at home will completely free you from stopping for regular trips at all as long as you have an outlet that you park at night.
It's also very comfortable for long journeys (in a Tesla, because of the charger network - I wouldn't be so enthusiastic without this network), but it's a different kind of journey. You may find that you hate it because of it. In this case, you could use / borrow another vehicle for this time, just as you may not want to take a long trip in a gasoline car that is too small for your group.

Energy Powered Vehicles
Global warming and the drastic fluctuations in our climate are issues that require our utmost attention. It requires some of us to sometimes give up certain activities so we can benefit from a cleaner environment. For example, carpooling is inexpensive and a time-efficient way of getting to work or school. Society as a whole also benefits from others carpooling because they are no longer exposed to a high rate of car emissions. People are less likely to be affected by the health implications that come from inhaling harmful gasses. There are people, however, who do not believe global warming is an issue. They choose to freeride off of those who do pay to have a cleaner environment. Economist William Nordhaus points out a valid argument in his book Climate Casino when he says: 'The main insight is that people must have economic incentives to change their activities in ways that lower emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. The best way to accomplish this is by putting a price on carbon dioxide emissions. This will, in turn, raise the relative prices of carbon-intensive goods and lower the relative prices of carbon-free goods, thereby bending down the trend of carbon dioxide emissions.'
Energy powered vehicles is an example of a product that might eventually replace gas-powered vehicles in the car market because of their cost-effectiveness and low contamination rate. Gas powered vehicles are expensive to maintain and emit gasses harmful to us and to our environment. According to a writer for Forbes Magazine, Constance Douris, 'Energy powered cars do not require as many components to operate. Electric motors only have one moving part while engines in traditional automobiles contain dozens. Items that do not need to be replaced in electric vehicles include oil, fan belts, air filters, timing belts, head gaskets, cylinder heads, and spark plugs. Thus, keeping an electric car running costs less when compared to conventional automobiles'. In the future, when energy powered vehicles permanently enter our markets, we might see a decrease in people's willingness to buy conventional cars and an increase in people's willingness to buy an electric car.
A positive externality that would arise from transitioning to electric vehicles is that fewer people would suffer from infections or diseases that arise from air pollution. This, in turn, would lead to decreases in government spending on the health sector. The 'extra' money could be used towards funding public schools or reconstructing roads and buildings. According to The American Lung Association, they estimate that '[the United States] would save around $20.5 billion dollars in annual health costs and $12.8 billion dollars in climate costs' if everyone were to commit to using hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles or hybrid cars.

Electric Vehicles Penetration into Indian Market
The type of research undertaken here is basic vs applied research, as this research is all about developing knowledge regarding the Electric vehicles penetration into Indian market besides predicting a possible strategy by creating products which are confined to only Indian market.
The aim of this study is to research, analyse and forecast the trends; provide an overview of the EV market; and discuss the impact of these trends on the growth and performance. The basic idea is that, full fledged electric vehicles production in India will take another 2 to 3 years. Few Indian companies like Tata, Mahindra have already introduced a couple of models into the market. Also other companies like Hyundai have also introduced their models but with a huge price. Now the higher price range passenger cars are not accepted by all the consumers. So it is a great opportunity for other companies to come up with very affordable model and rapidly gain the advantage. It is a great time for companies to enter into Indian market because the government has framed policies which are beneficial for the electric vehicle manufacturers. Like moved the GST council to lower the GST rate on EVs from 12% to 5%. Also to make EVs affordable for consumers, government has extended additional income tax deduction of 1.5 lakh rupees on the interest paid on the loans taken to purchase EVs.
In India, the Electric Vehicle market is dominated by electric two-wheelers with relatively fewer three- and four-wheelers plying the roads. The two-wheelers are mostly charged at residences and are used for limited city commute. That is because there is Lack of adequate number of charging stations is one of the majors restrain spotted in the Indian electric car market. The charging infrastructure is the most decisive factor for electric car sales in the country. The limited or inadequate availability of charging stations, coupled with lack of adequate financial schemes for the growth of such infrastructure, hinders the adoption of electric cars by customers. In addition, the technological challenges such as limited electric range and long charging time are also expected to affect the adoption of electric car in the country.
But one big advantage can be the public transport area as Public transport systems of India are among the most heavily used across the world. Therefore, shared electric mobility has an opportunity to gain popularity in the Indian electric car market by meeting the increasing need for transport systems. Mobility systems are experiencing transformation due to increasing connectivity, new business models, and steeply falling technology costs. Many business models are offering shared electric mobility solutions, with the notable ones being Ola Cabs and Uber.
So the major factors behind the growth of electric vehicle sales are government support in the form of grants, subsidies, and tax rebates, increasing environmental consumer awareness, improving charging infrastructure and increasing vehicle range.
Collection of data:
Secondary data was utilised to collect data for the research, the major source of secondary data was literature reviews, articles published by various people.
Data analysis method:
Here Content analysis is used to analyse the data. As the data is drawn from secondary sources, content analysis helps in understanding large data collected from literature reviews and articles. Like if the literature review consists of some 50 pages of data, all may not be necessary. So with the help of content analysis only the most relatable and necessary data can be drawn for the research.
Tools and materials:
Tools used for the research are mostly websites. Websites contain articles which are highly related to the topic. Many websites provide different information, but only the required and filtered data can been taken for the research purpose.
Some of the majorly used websites are www.businesswire. Com. www.globenews. Com, www.ermt.net.
Besides the websites which are mentioned above, many other websites were also used to gather information.
Rationale:
This research gives an insight of the EV Industry and put forward a business strategy for the EV in especially Indian automobile market. So for this research secondary data was used, that is because of the present situation. If there was no lockdown primary data could be used to gather information. Like data can be gathered from interviewing the personnel in the industry.
Therefore considering the present condition secondary data collection method is the most preferable method. This method also helps in exploring in depth regarding the electric vehicle market globally.

Benefits of Electrical Cars
Information technology and electronic devices have grown exponentially in the United States of America. Majority of devices and other electronic things use electricity, so why not the cars that we operate on daily basis. Electrical cars are trending in an upward direction. Some big companies like Honda, Toyota and Tesla are trying to introduce to us to a new innovation of electric car. The government officials, law makers, scientists and humans in general have a huge concern about our planet and the air that we breath, so to combat the hazardous toxic fumes, companies mentioned above have created various electrical cars. Purchasing an electrical has some disadvantage but it also has a lot of advantage also, that out weight the negatives, some of those benefit are fuel economy, pollution, individual health and low maintenance. That is why it strongly recommended that we start protecting our planet, our health and health of younger generation by investing by purchasing electrical vehicle. “Electric vehicle refers to the one with power of storage battery for vehicles and drives the wheels with the electric machinery, including pure electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles, and it complies with the requirement of road traffic and safety regulations”. One of the newest and biggest electric car producer is Tesla Motors. “Tesla Motors, based in San Carlos, Calif., is in the process of bringing the all-electric Tesla Roadster sports car to market. It is capable of going from zero to 60 mph in around four seconds, has a top speed of better than 130 mph, and can travel up to 250 miles on a single charge. The car’s power comes from its Lithium-ion Energy Storage System, or battery pack, which can be recharged in about 3.5 hours”.
One of advantages of the electrical cars is fuel economy. Every time an individual goes to the gas station, it seem like price are always on the rise; by switching to hybrid, semi-hybrid or fully electrical vehicle, the owner can save tremendous amount of money by eliminating fuel cost. “Fuel prices are increasing at the highest rate they have done for some time and each day (oil now costs over 100$ a barrel, NYMEX, 2008), as a nation (and as a population) we are being told more and more how we must not continue to use energy at the rate that we currently are doing”. There is a correlation in price of oil and gas, every time oil prices goes up, gas price at the gas station tend to go up too. Ultimately, if an individual wants to save or completely eliminated spending his/her hard earned check at the pump, one should strongly consider buying an electrical vehicle.
Second advantage of electrical car over gas consuming cars is pollution. On daily basis, you hear in the new, how our world is changing and how it is effected by toxic fumes that come from major factories and the cars that we operate. “Our personal vehicles are a major cause of global warming. Collectively, cars and trucks account for nearly one-fifth of all US emissions, emitting around 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other global-warming gases for every gallon of gas”('Cars and global warming,' para. 2). “Hybrid cars represent an important innovation in environment efforts to minimize gasoline consumption and resulting carbon emissions” (Oliver & Rosen, 2010, para. 1). “Hybrid cars reduce greenhouse gas emission by increasing fuel economy by 10 to 40 percent over similar-sized vehicle” (Oliver & Rosen, 2010, para. 1). Fully electrical car completely eliminate emission, since it is not burning fuel. Tesla is one of the newest companies that manufactures electrical cars. “The very purpose of an electrical car is to promote energy innovation; and Tesla Motors’ goal is to achieve this without causing any negative impact on the environment”. Ultimately, by switching to electrical car, an individual will not only save money, but will also make the world safer and the air that we breath every second our life cleaner.
Another advantage of electrical car over generic car, is there is no toxic fumes that human breath in on daily basis from exhaust that comes out of back of the car. The toxic fumes are known as carbon dioxide, if an individual inhales to much, it can lead to weak lungs and even worse it can end your life. “ Better air quality will lead to less health problems and cost caused by air pollution.
The final advantage of electrical vehicle over generic gas fed vehicle is lower cost on maintaining the vehicle, which can also relate to fuel economy and savings. Even though there have been some questions with hybrid cars and newly created Tesla, on how they catch fire due to batteries and while conducting self-driving test there were some errors and incident, the electrical car are still cheap on maintenance. Hybrid cars, semi-hybrid car, and a newly release Tesla does not require much maintenance. One of the main maintenance procedures or replacements required is batteries. Considering that those cars run on batteries instead of gas. Instead of spending tremendous amount of money on filling up you gas tank, electrical cars use electricity; the owner can charge the vehicle at his residency or a valid charging station in various locations around the world. “Tesla Model S could achieve a range of more than 400 miles”. “Tesla Motors creates vehicles that conform to all U.S. safety, environmental and durability standards. The cars include modern safety equipment such as airbags, front crumple zones, side impact protection and 2½ mph bumpers” . The main repair/replacement issue would be batteries, ultimately making repair/maintenance minimal, and ultimately once again keeping your money safe. “A battery electrical vehicle (BEV) has a lot less moving part than conventional petrol/diesel car. There is relatively little servicing and no expensive exhaust systems, starter motors, fuel injection systems and many other part that are not needed in an AV”. With less moving parts, there will be less lubrication required; owner will not have to worry about replacing a starter, which is required in regular cars. If the starter goes out, you will have to spend a pretty penny on replacing the starter. By avoiding fuel, the car will run smoother and there will be less residue stuck in fuel lines and will require less preventive flushing of fluids in the vehicle. The only way electrical cars will become an issue, if you completely loose electricity or have an extended power outage.
In conclusion, electrical cars are on the rise, many companies starter implementing hybrid technology and company like Tesla Motors have manufactured a fully electrical cars. Every day you see more and electrical cars on the road. They are fun to drive, eco-friendly by eliminating emission, electrical cars are cheaper on gas, which will help you keeping your wallet stuffed with cash instead of wasting on gas, and it requires less maintenance. “Tesla and three other leading innovators were honored at the 7th annual Designing a Sustainable and Secure World Awards, an event co-sponsored by Global Green USA and Green Cross International”.

Police Respect for the Community
According to Michael Nangle, and the article he wrote for the New York Times these principles are :
- The basic mission for which the police exist is to prevent crime and disorder.'
- The ability of the police to perform their duties is dependent upon public approval of police actions.'
- 'Police must secure the willing cooperation of the public in voluntary observance of the law to be able to secure and maintain the respect of the public.'
- 'The degree of cooperation of the public that can be secured diminishes proportionately to the necessity of the use of physical force.'
- Police seek and preserve public favor not by catering to the public opinion but by constantly demonstrating absolute impartial service to the law.'
- 'Police use physical force to the extent necessary to secure observance of the law or to restore order only when the exercise of persuasion, advice, and warning is found to be insufficient.'
- Police, at all times, should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.'
- Police should always direct their action strictly towards their functions and never appear to usurp the powers of the judiciary.'
- The test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder, not the visible evidence of police action in dealing with it' (Nagle, A20).
Peel created these nine principles because in the time of the 1890s in the democratic society he was in, he believed that officers needed their own set of guidelines and not the same ones soldiers had. Even though he liked that the military had such thing as chain-of-command and ranks; this was not going to be as useful to us as the nine principles are. With these nine principles policing has now taken a more serious turn, because now policemen and women have these nine ethical reasons to make them more legit; that make these officers look more official to us. When policemen and women seem as if they have it together, then us as citizens feel more protected by them. And that is what these nine principles did, they have these 'rules' they must follow, so we put our trust and our hope into them.
There are a number of procedures that an offender must undergo through in his or her progression through the system. The steps are arrest, the prosecution of the defendant/ first appearance, indictment (this is the accusation that the suspect has committed the crime), arraignment (this is where the charges the criminal has been read in court), bail, plea bargaining (this is where the defendant pleads guilty to the crime whether he has committed it or not for a lesser sentence), trial (whether the defendant is determined guilty or not guilty by jury), sentencing (this is handled by the judge), appeals, and lastly punishment of the guilty defendant.
There are a few reasons why a suspect could be arrested by a police officer, the way it starts is probable cause. Probable cause can be found in the fourth amendment and what this is, is basically a good reason or beyond a reasonable doubt, the officer has to make an arrest, to seize evidence from a house or search without a search warrant. Another way a criminal can be arrested if an officer arrests someone under a valid warrant, such as if the criminal has violated probation or is the suspect to a crime. And lastly, an officer can make an arrest if he sees someone blatantly disobeying the law.
After this is when the booking process comes to place, this process takes about two hours and the criminal is not allowed to make bail unless this process is complete. This process is started by fingerprints being taken by a correctional officer and entered into AFIS. Then the photo of the criminal is taken; this is also known as their 'mugshot'. After that is done then they get their clothes swapped and bunk/cell assignment. If the criminal is able to make their bail then they are allowed to leave the jail but are still required to come forth by a judge. Even in the seriousness of murder, anyone can make bail, this is made known under the Eighth Amendment. If the defendant does not make bail they are taken into custody and held until their new court date.
This next step is called prosecution, and this is where they weigh the strength of the evidence and the seriousness of the crime that was committed. When in front of a judge, depending on whether it is a bench trial or a jury trial the judge or jury, they look over the evidence and establish whether it has a probable cause beyond a reason of doubt or not. They determine whether the suspect is guilty, innocent, or not guilty pertaining to the crime they have or have not committed. At this point, plea bargaining could take place, and what this does is if the defendant pleads guilty it is possible that some of their charges could be dropped and they receive a lesser sentence.
This is also where the pre-trial motion would come into play. A pre-trial motion is where the defense and prosecution both determine whether the testimony the defendant gives and evidence are admissible in the trial or not. It is the defendant's constitutional right to have a trial. When in a trial, the prosecutor must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant has committed that crime. Then opening and closing statements are taken and so are the cross-examinations, the witness testimonies. The jury is sent to a different room so they can count up their votes, and if the decision is not unanimous, the trial could be declared a mistrial and it could either be dropped or a new jury will be selected to determine the fate of the defendant.
Sentencing is the next step to this process, this is where they take into the account what the crime was and how severe it ultimately is. Also if the criminal has past history their sentence could be longer, the degree of the defendants' health/ any special circumstance they may have. If the defendant is unhappy with their outcome they can ask to have their case looked at by a higher standing court, and this court will review the entire case. This is called the appeal because if the higher standing court finds a problem with the defendants' case, they can appeal the case and the case can go to a re-trial or the conviction of the criminal can be reversed.
The courtroom procedures are everything that goes on inside the courtroom. This will be broken down into eight different steps; some steps are similar to the procedures an offender goes through. These procedures are choosing a jury, the opening, and closing of statements, the witness testimony, the cross-examination, jury instruction/ deliberation, and the verdict of the jury. These steps are important because without these procedures there would be no such thing as trial and we would not know if someone was guilty or innocent. Depending on the case, the defense decides whether a jury will decide the verdict of the defendant or if the judge will. The evidence will be showed and reviewed determining if the evidence is admissible and determining if it seems like the defendant has committed a crime or not.
When it comes to the prosecution of the defendant this is where the main case of the prosecutor is presented. If the defense would like to they can cross-examine the witness. If the prosecutor has not provided enough evidence then there could be a motion to dismiss the case even in the event if the jury believes there is enough evidence. In most cases, though the judge will deny the motion to dismiss the case. After the defense has finished presenting their case the prosecutor may or may not have evidence to create a rebuttal against whatever the defendant mentioned.
The jury is then given instructions by the judge that both the prosecutor and defense have agreed upon. The prosecutor then begins to give his or her closing arguments, this is when the prosecutor gives the summarization of what they had previously stated and why they should find the defendant guilty. The same thing happens with the defense, but they give their reason why the defendant should not be found guilty. If there is any rebuttal on either side they are able to say it before the jury meets and makes their decision. The jury takes the instructions they have been given, deliberate, and come up with their verdict.
A post-trial motion can be requested and most likely denied; and then the judge determines the sentence for the guilty defendant, and one of two outcomes are possible. These two outcomes would be the defendant getting sentenced right on the spot, or in some cases, their sentence is on a different date.

My Training as a Public Policeman
What new information you gathered from the week's PowerPoint slides, videos, articles and other assigned reading. This first week of class I was impressed at first, I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into going into a criminal justice class when I don’t know anything about laws or what being a police officer is all about, but I guess that’s why I decide to take this class to learn. Having a teacher (Ms. Manning) that is a retired police officer is exciting for many reasons one is she knows what she is talking about. Her experience in the field has provided her with many stories for her to sure with the class and it is making it more fun to go to class and have her share a new story relating to the topic we are going to be talking about.
Ms. Manning has so far shared some of her own stories and experiences she had to the class. She explained to everyone that being a police officer is not just riding in a police car, eating donuts and giving out tickets NO its rough stuff that police officers must do and see to help and protect us. She told us about a time she had received a call about a person how had committed suicide. She described that seeing the guys body on the floor in his back yard after giving himself a shot to the head had really scared her. I can’t image having to see the person’s body one the floor died.
Her own professional opinion being a retired police officer, she tells us what she would have done if she oversaw that case. For example, Ms. Manning had told us about the case of JonBenet Patricia Ramsey. I found the case interesting, and I don’t know how I hadn’t heard about it before. The death of JonBenet is heart breaking thinking that some possible suspects are her own family. After class I came home and started to read more about the incident, and I found articles about how people were blaming “the mother calming she was jealous of her little girl” Huber 2016 or “that she just wanted the money” Biography 2014. Ms. Manning was very upset explaining to us that the police that has arrived at the Ramsey’s house “the night of the murder has done a lot of mistakes” Huber 2016
In this week’s PowerPoint we learned about Search and Seizure and the 7 Exceptions on when the police officer can search your car without your permission. Learning the deference between probable cause vs reasonable suspicious. Probable cause is when a police officer has already “enough evidence to take to a judge to get a warrant and search your house, car etc.” Schwartzbach 2018. Reasonable suspicious is when a crime has, will, or is in the process of being committed.
The critical thinking, I engaged to would be the Search and Seizure, Police officers sometimes ask you if they can search your car knowing they can find something to arrest you for, having the right to say no when they ask if they can search my vehicle is a relief because some officer may act like it’s by law that you have to let them search your car but no and that what some people don’t know like me. I didn’t know that we can say no to searching the car. From this first week of class I enjoyed the things I learned so far. I’m excited for what’s next and what Ms. Manning have planned for us this semester.
The ct2learn is new for me this website I haven’t used in my classes before, but the book is included in the package when you buy it. It’s different from my other classes but I’m excited to learn new things related to criminal justice. When registering for the Ct2learn it is a bit complicated it’s not letting me sign in or do much I contacted the help support like the teacher suggested but its asking for a access code like a proof of purchase kind of number but when I go to purchase it, it’s asking me for my username and password when I type it its saying I don’t have an account and it send me back to the prices again?

William Jennings Bryan Attitude to Imperialism
Bryan--who was running for president on the Democratic ticket--believed the Republican party had become imperialistic. In other words, he believed the Republicans wanted to turn America into an empire. One example of this imperialism was the Republicans' attitude toward the Philippines. As a congressman, three-time presidential nominee and secretary of state, he was among the most accomplished politicians of his time. He was a populist who believed strongly in the wisdom of the common man, and he fought against policies that favored the wealthy and powerful. He was a pacifist who resigned as secretary of state when the US entered World War I. He toured the country tirelessly, campaigning for the causes he favored, and became a hero to many ordinary Americans.
Today even Bryan’s defenders seem to accept the religious part of his legacy and forget the rest. Conservatives revere him. A bible college in Dayton, Tennessee, where the Scopes trial took place, is named for Bryan, and the courthouse where the case was tried has a statue of him. Although the trial of John Scopes was supposed to focus narrowly on whether the Butler Act had been violated, it quickly spiraled into a national media event. People arrived from every part of the country often with their own agendas and axes to grind. It soon became a trial pitting evolutionists against creationists. Clarence Darrow, attorney for the defense wanted to test the constitutionality of the Butler Act, but Dayton, Tennessee was not the place to do it because the question to be answered there was 'Has the law been violated?
Did John Scopes teach evolutionary theory to his students?' The test of constitutionality would have to come later on appeal should the defendant be found guilty. It is not surprising then that when time came for the Defense's closing statement, Darrow asked the judge to find the defendant guilty and to dispense with both closing statements. It is said that William Jennings Bryan had worked for weeks on his offering and, justifiable disappointment aside, once the defense had asked for a guilty verdict, any final remarks from him would have served no useful purpose. Darrow's own words to the judge: 'We have all been here quite a while and I say it in perfectly good faith, we have no witnesses to offer, no proof to offer on the issues that the Court has laid down here, that Mr. Scopes did teach what the children said he taught, that man descended from a lower order of animals -- we do not mean to contradict that, and I think to save time we will ask the Court to bring in the jury and instruct the jury to find the defendant guilty. We make no objection to that and it will save a lot of time and I think that should be done. (p. 306 of the trial transcript)'

Shawn Barre Created American Imperialism while Creating the Work
This installation was one Shonibare’s largest at the time (since then he has gone much larger in scale) it focuses on the main theme of wealth in Europe. The way this piece was designed as a stage set, it allowed for the viewer to walk around a center wall and see the interior of the room. The lavish furniture, walls, and hanging curtains were coated with the signature Dutch wax textiles. It was if the viewer was watching a live taping of television show. This stage setting was how Shonibare interpreted society’s attraction for entertainment, dramas, and re-creations of lives of rich people. On one of the walls in the interior lies a small framed photograph of a black soccer player. The relationship between the athlete and the room is reminiscent of the colonizer-colonized relationship. One party has obtained this eccentric living space and can live comfortably, while the colonized are left hanging on the wallpaper with nothing. Shonibare once said he wanted his home to look somewhat similar to the interior of this piece.
Scramble for Africa(2003)(Fig.9) was a figure piece that explored Victorian style England and its territorial expansion to Africa in the 1880s. This so called “scramble” for Africa was part of the Berlin conference of 1884-1885 where multiple European nations planned to separate Africa into equal parts for all the nations at the conference. They fought over their share of Africa, basically carving their place into the continent. This work displays various headless statesmen huddled around a large table with a map of Africa carved into the wood. Each one of the figures appears to be staking their claim and deciding how much of the continent each person will receive.
Shonibare describes the figures as hungry and blind to power. This is another example of the stage set pieces, but in contrast to the the The Victorian Philanthropist's Parlour, Scramble for Africa features “actors” within the scene. The viewer is supposed to feel the drama of the event taking place and see the emotions of the actors as they deprestly scramble for all the riches of Africa. Shonibare describes the work as “Theatricality is certainly a device in my work, it is a way of setting the stage; it is also a fiction--a hyper-real, theatrical device that enables you to re-imagine events from history. . . Scramble for Africa examines how history repeats itself and when I was making it I was really thinking about American imperialism and the need in the West for resources such as oil and how this preempts the annexation of different parts of the world'(Shonibare). This was one of many works by Shonibare to focus of the themes of colonial dominance and exploitation.

The Development of Colonization and Imperialism in the United States
Colonialism can be a sensitive topic for many. Many atrocities have been committed through the colonization of foreign lands and people. Those who have practiced colonization might have received economic and political gains, giving them a motive to continue expanding their empire and overthrow foreign territories. Indigenous people might have been forced to alter their beliefs, they might have been exploited as slaves, or they might have even been killed off by colonizers. Colonization is simply a way for countries to acquire control and dominate foreign countries. Colonization permits countries to exploit, racially segregate, and influence foreign people.
Colonization has been occurring throughout the existence of mankind, however when most people think about colonialism they think about Western colonialism. There are many examples of western colonization, such as the colonization of Africa or the colonization of the North American Natives. With the rise of colonization there was also the rise of imperialism. Like colonization, imperialist ideals also gave counties a reason to exploit other native lands and people. The film “Colonization, Genocide, and Manifest Destiny” by Dr. Myla Vicenti Carpio describes imperialism as a function that is based around the “exploitation of a colony.”
During the late 1800’s The United States began a movement that many refer to as the “Age of Imperialism.” A growing United States country decided that it must expand its country both economically and politically. The United States wanted to become a world power. After defeating Spain in the Spanish American War in 1898 the United States would imperialize the Philippines. And through a bloody war they would eventually colonize the Philippines. From 1898 to 1946 the United States would exploit the Philippines by taking advantage of them economically and strategically using military power. Colonization has allowed countries to exploit seemingly weaker countries and the colonization of the Philippines is just one example.
While the exploitation of people is an obvious feature of colonization, another issue that appears is how countries justify colonization. And how a country welcomes foreign people into their country. This usually leads to racially tense feelings towards native people. Colonizers may believe that foreigners are inferior or a threat to their country. The document by Natalia Molina called “Borders, Laborers and Racialized Medicalization” Molina argues that the ideology of the Manifest Destiny movement allowed American’s to justify colonization of the South West. Believers of this movement felt that White Americans were superior to Mexicans and Native Americans.
This idea of white supremacy is the driving force that is used in colonization. Andrea Smith, author of “Indigently, Settler Colonialism, White Supremacy” believes that for colonization to work, colonizers must feel they are superior to the people they are controlling. “The logic of orientalism marks certain people or nations as inferior and deems them to be a threat to the wellbeing of the empire.” (Indigently, Settler Colonialism, White Supremacy, Andrea Smith). Once the United States had gained control over the South West and immigrant work was crucially needed, America began enacting federal immigration laws. These immigration laws of the late 19th and early 20th century was based around segregation and racism. To legally work in the United Sates only Mexican migrants had to undergo “Intrusive, humiliating, and harmful medical examinations.” (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, Natalia Molina). Colonization creates racial tension by considering those who are different to be inferior and sometimes a threat.
A distinct type of colonialism is settler colonialism, while settler colonialism is like colonialism there are some differences. For example, the colonization of North America can be seen as settler colonialism. Europeans arrived in North America and began decimating native people until the native population almost disappeared. The native population became the minority and the settler population became the majority. White settlers took away native culture and replaced it with their own. A perfect example of settler colonialism is the annexation of Hawaii.
In the lecture video “Settler Colonialism in Hawaii” by Dr. Joanne L. Rondilla, Rondilla states that before American and European intervention, Hawaii was a flourishing native territory with over 1 million inhabitants. They had a simple economy and lived a simple life. However, the United States saw an opportunity to exploit growing industries in Hawaii such as the sugar cane industry and in just a short amount of time Hawaii’s native population had decreased from 1 million to just over 200,000. Later the United States would control the Hawaiian Islands and grant Hawaii statehood in 1959. On the other side, standard colonization usually does not involve the extreme decimation of native people. One could argue that the colonization of Africa could be seen as a standard form of colonization. The majority of Africa’s population remained African, but colonizers still dominated the territory and exploited African tribes.
Settler colonialism doesn’t have just a profound affect on the population of native peoples, it also has an intense affect on their society. After the annexation of Hawaii, the Hawaiian natives were forced to be reeducated. Indigenous practices were outlawed, white settlers didn’t allow natives to read, write, or even speak in their native tongues. Dr. Karen Leong in the lecture video “Citizen, or Not” speaks about substantive citizenship, a type of citizenship that gives people the “right to be culturally recognized and treated as full members of society.” (Citizen, or Not, Karen Leong). The problem with settler colonialism is that it did not give these rights to native people and people of color. Native Hawaiians were treated as second class people, they were thought of as inferior savages that had to be taught to behave correctly. Native Americans after the colonization of North America were considered dangerous people. Natives that had been colonized by white settlers had their culture taken away and at the same time were excluded from white culture.
Colonization has permitted countries to get ahead while putting other people down. Millions have had their culture taken away by settlers and colonizers, many have been the recipients of racism and hatred from settlers, many more have had their lives taken through this cruel and vicious form of exploitation and expansion. It’s not surprising that many feel uncomfortable talking about colonialism and the destruction it has caused.

The United States was an Imperialist Nation in the 1840s
Imperialism, from my own perspective, is using military/political power to forcefully take control over land or another governments property to claim it as your own.
The United States has quite a bit of history that falls under this definition, especially from the very beginning. The land that the thirteen original colonies were settled on belonged to the Native Americans, not the English, yet the English still went and claimed the land for themselves with little regard for the Natives. As this was the use of political power (claiming international land), it it worth arguing that the settling of the first thirteen colonies, and the United States as a whole, is an large example of imperialism.
Another example is that of the formerly Spanish Florida. Even though Andrew Jackson attacked Spanish Florida in 1818, around 20 years from the 1840s, it is still a significant example as it feeds into the ideas of Manifest Destiny (believing it is “the divine right and duty of white Americans to seize and settle the American West”) and gives a good idea as to how the United States at the time was becoming even more imperialist over time. Particularly due to the fact that Andrew Jackson was “frustrated by his inability to punish Creek and Seminole raiders… and executed two British citizens… Outraged by the U.S. invasion of its territory, the Spanish government demanded that Jackson and his troops withdraw”. Clarifying that Jackson invaded Spanish Florida with no permission to do so, and even though Florida was still given to the United States through a treaty, Spain was almost forced to do so. Otherwise, they would have a huge conflict between the Natives of Florida and Andrew Jackson's troops, pulling them into the conflict as well. This is one of the earlier examples of how the United States was an imperialistic nation.
One of the bigger, and more horrifying examples is the Trail of Tears. It indirectly began in 1830, when Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, which asked for “the removal of the Five Civilized Tribes from their home in the southeastern United States to land in the West, in present-day Oklahoma”. The “Five Civilized Tribes” were the Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, and Cherokee. Of the Five Civilized Tribes, the Cherokee decided to try and oppose this act passed by Congress by claiming the Cherokees were an independent foreign government. Unfortunately, the United States government used their overwhelming federal power to find the Cherokees were not an independent foreign government, thus giving them no grounds to oppose the Indian Removal Act. Many Native Americans chose to remain on their lands, and due to these circumstances, the United States government used military power to force migration on the Natives. Under my definition of imperialism, this is a definitive example, as instead of traveling to land to claim it as your own, the United States forced the original inhabitants of the land off of it so they could claim that it was theirs in the first place.
The final, and most relevant example to the 1840s, is the Mexican-American War. It began with President James Polk sending U.S. troops down in 1846 to the highly debated border of Texas and Mexico, instructing them to build a fort. From this, the U.S. troops came in contact with Mexican cavalry, and around sixteen of them were killed. In order to make Congress declare war on Mexico (which would lead to seizing territory that Polk promised he would seize), Polk stated that Mexico “‘invaded our territory and shed American blood upon American soil’”. Congress then declared war on Mexico. The antislavery groups argued that “Polk had deliberately provoked hostilities”, which is exactly what he did, beginning a war with Mexico over Texas in order to gain Texas and California.
Clearly, Polk used his political power as Commander in Chief of the United States to provoke this war, which I claim is imperialistic, as the American soldiers also had “superior weapons”, giving them an unfair military advantage. The Mexican-American War also feeds into the ideas of Manifest Destiny, which is a clear imperialist ideology, that you have the “divine right” to take any land you want. From the end of the Mexican-American War came the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which gave the United States territory in “California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and portions of Colorado and Wyoming” as well as giving them “$3.35 million worth of Mexican debts owed to U.S. citizens”. While receiving these debts wasn’t necessarily good for the United States, the value of the land given to the U.S. is worth a lot more than $3.35 million and the $15 million paid to Mexico for this land. Overall, the Mexican-American War was completely imperialistic as the United States had both military and political advantages over Mexico, making it unfair and a huge use of power.
In summary, these three examples highlight history prior to and during the 1840s which indicates how the United States became even more imperialistic than it was in the beginning. Each example represents how the United States used its power unfairly in biased ways, especially in the 1840s, with Polk’s straightforward imperialist strategy and belief in the principles of Manifest Destiny. From these historical examples it is undeniable that the United States was an imperialist country during the 1840s.

My Experience and Observation of a Trip to the Theater
In How the Other Half Laughs Corbin is stressed his mourn of the Teatro Italiano and the loss of the wonderful performances and experiences it provided to its audience. He valued the Teatro Italiano and what it gave to its audiences when commented on the audience members whom were absolutely drawn into the entire experience of what this particular theatre presented. Whatever the emotion the actors were portraying reflected directly onto the audience. If there was heartbreak on the stage, there was raw emotion being felt on the other side of the theatre. If there was a battle scene, audiences became vocal and filled with excitement. Corbin illustrated to his audience that this was not just a theatre. This was a place where Italian families came together, from grandmothers to infants, joining together on Sundays. He describes the Teatro Italiano as if it could be potentially compared to be someone's church to individuals based on how people valued and attended this theatre religiously.
As the years past, less Italians attended to the Teatro Italiano. One day, the Teatro Italiano became simply another American theatre. Corbin claims that the obvious reason why the Teatro Italiano met its fate because the Italian immigrants came to America were mostly from the countryside of Italy. This particular wave of immigrants did not come to the United States to comfortably settle. Most of these immigrants wanted to earn and save as much money as they could, and return back to Italy and continue to live there. This was not the case for every single Italian immigrant at the time. Some openly accepted as America as their new home. What comes with acceptance of living new and completely different world is the abandonment of one's origins and traditions. As time progressed, new generations were born and raised by the new Americanized customs. As new generations continue to arise, people grow on the Americanized taste and step away from their ancestral origins. Corbin reflected back to a similar death of the cultural custom of the French theatre. Similarly how Italian theatres disappeared like the Teatro Italiano, the French theatre slowly diminished little by little until one day it was completely taken over by American plays.
As difficult as it was to experience what was described to something absolutely beautiful and remarkable, Corbin did come to the conclusion that he understood the cultural shift that was constantly occurring in the United States. People initially made the decision to leave their homeland for various reasons, mostly for a new and fresh start. He commented that Americans do not have the desire to live simply and happily as one should. This demonstrates his attitude toward the shift of customs with a negative connotation, but with the acknowledgement of other opinions.
I believe that history will repeat itself and theatrical productions of other immigrant groups will share the same fate as the French and Italian theatres. As Corbin explained in How the Other Half Laughs, as the new generations from immigrant families grow and progress, there is a trend in the abandonment of the individual's native customs and values. Newer generations typically do not speak the language their ancestors came from. Corbin mentioned even in the theatre, a wholesome piece from the Italian's culture, people mainly spoke English to each other. I believe it will not only theatre productions that will slowly diminish, it will be other businesses from immigrant groups as well. In the United States, we live in a world of capitalism and consumerism, and large companies cast shadows over small businesses.
Based on personal experience, my grandparents who were immigrants from Germany, opened a delicatessen in Orange County. Delicatessens originated from Germany, and my grandparents were successful with sharing and selling their culture in the United States. My mother told me most of their customers were either immigrants from Germany or the new generation of German-Americans. My grandparents decided to retire and they sold their business to a family friend, and over time that friend had no choice but to close the shop because newer generations came about and people were no longer interested in spending their money at the delicatessen and would rather purchase all of their products from one convenient store. I personally agree with Corbin and his values of knowing where you come from; however and unfortunately, it is rather difficult to compete and survive small productions in modern times.

Countertransference Experience and Therapist Reactions
Rosenthal (1990) described that the pregnant therapist is faced with issues about identity, integration of roles, maternal identification, and redefinition of important relationships. In some cases, the client views the pregnant therapist as a person for the first time. More specifically, the therapist may not have been previously viewed as multifaceted, with many roles such as therapist, mother, and having personal relationships outside of therapeutic work. In psychodynamic therapy, affective responses from both the therapist and client must be understood in order to provide effective treatment. The pregnant therapist must find the balance between professional and private life, while dealing with circumstances about how to integrate these two identities. Fallon and Brabender (2003) label this process as an identity crisis for the pregnant therapist, especially if this is the therapist’s first pregnancy. The identity crisis can have an impact on the therapist’s self-image, maturational development, and physical and psychological state. Furthermore, a self-image shift may occur as the pregnant therapist develops a new interest in herself and aligns with her own mother as a prototype paternal figure (Rubin, 1980).
The pregnant therapist may evoke intense feelings in the client, and in return may experience these intense feelings in response through countertransference. Countertransference occurs when positive and/or negative feelings are evoked in the therapist by the client (Frankland, 2013). A common theme found in most of the literature was feelings of guilt for the therapist. In the article by Rosenthal (1990), pregnant therapists reported being more aware of feelings of guilt toward their clients when encountering thoughts about discontinuing and separating from the client. The literature review showed that as the therapist’s maternity leave approached, clients became angry or engaged in acting out behaviors which lead to increased intensity of therapist’s guilt (Grossman, 1990; Rosenthal, 1990). According to Grossman (1990), some triggers for the guilt experienced by pregnant therapists was reportedly due to being less available to nurture clients, less flexibility in scheduling of appointment times, and physical vulnerability.
Baum’s (2006) research found similar themes of guilt amongst pregnant social work students completing their field training. Interviews conducted with 10 middle class social work students found reports of feelings of guilt. Guilt feelings stemmed from a reported lessened ability to concentrate on their clients in session, wanting to develop professionally, and also wanting to leave fieldwork in order to spend time with their baby once born. One participant in Baum’s (2006) study stated, “When my belly was jumping, it was a dilemma of whom to listen to” (p. 565). Likewise, interviewees expressed themes of using supervision time for therapeutic support through their pregnancy.
Supervision in the field of psychology is a time reserved for a trainee to receive feedback from another clinician about their work with clients, professional development, and personal development, typically their clinical supervisor (Watkins, 1998). Although literature is scant, Baum (2006) discusses the unique shift in supervision that occurs. Pregnant therapists reported to focusing more on personal development, rather than the typical review of work with clients and professional development. Utilizing supervision space in this manner increased feelings of guilt for those who inevitably transformed supervision sessions into personal therapeutic experiences in order to fulfill their own personal needs. Some of these personal needs, according to Baum (2006), included a desire to be cared for and guided; this is especially relevant for pregnant therapists who are experiencing their first pregnancy and thus may experience feelings of uncertainty about the many unknown aspects about motherhood. Accordingly, in addition to reviewing clients, it appears that supervisors may need to shift the focus of supervision in order to meet the needs of the pregnant supervisee and particularly to allow space for the supervisee to process emotional reactions to clients and the therapeutic process. However, this may lead to increased feelings of guilt for the pregnant therapist due to frequently utilizing the supervision space to focus on personal needs surrounding the pregnancy.
Other literature also suggests that feelings of anxiety, particularly about what the future may hold for them, is another common theme amongst pregnant therapists (Baum, 2006; Rubin, 1980; Schmidt, Fiorini, & Ramires, 2015). As one participant in Baum’s (2006) study stated,
I did not sleep because of thoughts of what I would do. I wanted so much to continue my studies and I was afraid [the baby] would be in the way… I was very ambivalent. It was very difficult to talk about this; anybody who hears it gets frightened, saying: You are pregnant, you should say thank you (p. 567).
In addition to guilt and anxiety, other themes that emerged among pregnant therapists were self-protectiveness, guilt about clients’ envy of pregnancy or inability to conceive, desire to avoid client hostility, and ambivalence about self-disclosure.
Countertransference of guilt and anxiety may hinder the therapist or cause the therapist to become hypervigilant, causing a deficit in the therapist’s ability to effectively work by misreading the presence or absence of reactions from clients about the pregnancy (Wedding & Corsini, 2014). A pregnant therapist’s guilt and anxiety around the pregnancy may impact her ability to disclose the pregnancy to the client in a timely fashion. Research by Dyson and King (2008) states that if the client has been unable to acknowledge the therapist’s pregnancy, or is in denial about the therapist’s pregnancy, there is a heightened risk that the therapist may collude with the denial of visible events. The therapist may, for example, deny her pregnancy, mirroring the client through countertransference. According to Dyson and King (2008), this is done by the therapist to avoid feelings of guilt and anxiety about how the client will respond to the news of the pregnancy out of fear that she or the client will become overwhelmed and potentially impact the therapist’s self-identification.
The self-identification of a pregnant therapist has been seen to impact the countertransference experience. Sachs (1986) investigated the countertransference experience and identity of pregnant therapists who self-identified as lesbian. According to Sachs (1986), a pregnant therapist who identifies as lesbian (or with another non-heterosexual label) can evoke myths about pregnancy for clients on an unconscious level. From Sachs’ (1986) personal experience as a lesbian pregnant therapist, she reported frequent questions from colleagues and clients of “How did you do it?” The pregnant lesbian therapist may also debunk stereotypes about lesbians, such as lesbians being masculine, disagree with traditional female roles, and/or carry no feelings for children (Sachs, 1986). Additionally, the pregnancy of a lesbian therapist may also go against.

Personal Experience Traumatic Event of Children
During the development of a child we are introduced to resilience, the capability to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness (Merrian-Webster, 2018). Resilience is tested by stress that is introduced in their life, as a child, such as going to school/daycare and leaving your parents, riding a bike for the first time or performing for an event, are some forms of stress that helps their brains to grow and new skills to develop (Goodman, Brown, Cloitre & Gallagner, 2017). Trauma takes place when a stressful experience; such as being abused, neglected, or death of a significant person, devastates the child’s normal capability to handle stress (Cohen, Mannarino, 2011). These events will cause “fight, flight, or freeze” to become active, changes in the body take affect that can include but not limited to, faster heart rate and higher blood pressure, as well as changes in how the brain perceives and responds to the world (Nickerson, Bryant, Aderka, Hinton, Hofmann, 2015).
Trauma interferes with normal development and can have long-lasting effects. A traumatic event that specifically deals with children can stem from many aspects, family, environment, personal experience are some examples. Death is one type of traumatic experience, it is inevitable, but death can also be unexpected and shocking, for an adult and as a child, who is still in need of a parent to help love and raise them. The effects of a passing loved one can be tremendous to a child, having a long-term impact on a child’s well-being and has been linked with a wide range of serious and enduring health consequences ranging from schizophrenia to major depression and suicide (Goodman, Brown, Cloitre, & Gallagner, 2011). The symptoms and syndromes associated with childhood bereavement are generally considered in terms of the immediate reactions that occur in the weeks and months following the death, the intermediate reactions that can appear later in childhood or adolescence, and the long-range or 'sleeper' effects that may appear in adulthood either as enduring consequences or delayed reactions to the loss (Cohen, Mannarino, 2011).
As a part of the crisis guide for teenagers, developed by The Institute for Trauma and Stress at The NYU Child Study Center, for coping with the death of a parent, some trauma behaviors that would help and support the grieving stages that can be experienced (National Child Traumatic Stress Network, 2014):
- Keep adolescents involved with family activities related to the trauma or death but use care when requiring participation over a long period.
- Resist expecting or assigning adult responsibilities.
- Discuss changes in the family and work together to develop solutions to problems.
- Be cautious about any changes the teen might want to make during the trauma or immediately following a death.
- Consider how the event or death may be influencing usual difficult adolescent behavior and address it directly.
- Educate the teen about potential risks of acting out behavior.
- Be sensitive to clues of increased risk-taking or illegal activity.
When a child experiences a loss of a parent the effects of that trauma could be expressed in different setting like the home, the school/community. In an aggressive behavior toward peers, siblings, and/or adults, no control over emotions during an intense situation, nightmares, irritable, feelings of guilt (Cohen, Mannarino, 2011). A child can have trouble during the school day by expressing anger, moody behavior, become bored with classes that the child may have shown interest in previously, difficulties with peers and adults, distracted, and feeling overwhelmed (Goodman, Brown, Cloitre & Gallagner, 2017). Teachers, and supporting staff members may become aware of the changes in a child’s focus and their behavior around important dates; like the deceased family member’s birth date or the date of their death.
Some behaviors can be experienced differently in the home the child way feel very clingy to family members, this may be due to the cause of the loss, and in the fear of losing another family member, depending on how and where the family member had passes away, the child can be fearful of anything that reminds them of the traumatic situation. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) is a term used to identify potential negative impacting childhood events, that correlate with adult medical issues because of the childhood events (ACE, 2017). Based on the types of impactful experienced based upon ACE, it could potentially inform you if you are to experience premature death, due to the number of traumatic experienced that you have faced. If you were to experience one form of traumatic experience it is expected that you are to experience another form of traumatic experience.
Experience the death of a family member was a measurement of ACE, and the data showed that 3% of children from ages 0 – 17 had this experience, 5% were ages 12 – 17. This information only reflects children that lived with the parent or guardian and not the parent outside of the household (ACE, 2017). Trauma can affect a child’s behavior in ways that may be confusing or distressing for caregivers. Trauma interferes with normal development and can have long-lasting effects. A traumatic event the specifically dealing with children can stem from many aspects; the environment that the child has come from the parents or guardians background, and how the events have affected the child through behavior and actions. It can impact the long-term health and well-being of the child and his or her family members. However, with understanding, care, and proper treatment (when necessary), all members of the family can heal and thrive after a traumatic event like death.

Experience in Combating Youth with Mental Illness
Youth who suffer from mental health are at a risk of social isolation and stigmatization. These children are neglected or hidden from public eye. The challenge is to understand as how can we help them to create spaces which could be comfortable for them and how can we understand the problems and challenges faced by such people. Disability is a consequence of an impairment that can be physical , mental , sensory , emotional or combination of these. It affects day to day activities of person suffering from disability. Special users have impact on their behavior due to change in the environment and space. For example, even a small change in arrangement of furniture changes the environment in the given space.
People with mental disorders have particular ways of perceiving reality and thus have different behavioural, social and physical needs. I have a close association with my sister who is mentally challenged and hence the observations are evident from my personal experience and also have led me to understand the sense of curiosity, their living and work spaces further. These learning experiences have shed light for me on the struggles youth with mental illness face as they try to fit in society. The paper aims at addressing the factors and principles in human life and its effect on mentally challenged people. The aspects are: Stimulating Environment, Legible Space, Coherence, Control, Restorative qualities of space. These qualities are the findings from a research paper which are observed and studied carefully and in detail. Mentally challenged users can be classifies as users facing problems such as Autism, Schizophrenia, Epilepsy. The prime participants for this research were users with problems having Autism and the Schizophrenia. I chose these users with specific problems as I had the opportunity to observe the special users having Autism and schizophrenia, the way they use their space and experience it. A brief information of what autism and schizophrenia are:
- Autism
Autism is characterized by impaired development in areas of social interaction, communication and repetitive behaviour, in addition to a keen sensitivity to touch, sight, loud noises and certain smells and tastes (Wood, 2003). They are obsessed with order and need to control their environment in an attempt to understand it and make it predictable and consistent. Many people with autism can learn and develop new skills through repetition, and can therefore be trained to work and participate in the community (National Institute of Mental Health, 2003).
- Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is characterized as having delusions (false beliefs), hallucinations (distorted visual, auditory, tactile, gustatory, and olfactory perceptions), disorganized speech and behaviour, and/or lack of motivation and emotional expression (Wood, 2003). Schizophrenia usually starts in adolescence or adulthood, and is marked by social withdrawal, impaired functioning, and confusion. There is no cure for schizophrenia, however symptoms can be treated and the person can function in society.
Efforts are being made in the education sector to make provisions for facility clients. The concept of inclusive education is being introduced to bring about parity between students. However, inclusive education puts both of them in the same environment which does not facilitate quality education and understanding for the facility clients. Hence, there is a need for suitable environment which is provided at a few schools specially for these children. In the research conducted, Savali –A shelter for care, Prism Foundation, Kamayani School for Mentally Handicapped, these schools have been studied which have such a character and are pioneering suitable environments for education of mentally retarded children. This inter relation between the user and the space has been explored further in the paper based on research conducted by Ayman Makki called as ‘Healing Architecture’ and by live case studies conducted in various schools.

My Experience of Meeting with 12 Steps
On the night of April twenty-first, I attended my first anonymous twelve-step program meeting. The meeting was held at Fullerville Baptist Church, and was an open discussion for an all age group. The meeting was to help those with addictions regardless of: age, race, or any means. Narcotics Anonymous is an organization or society meeting to help recuperating addicts to stay clean from their addictions; therefore, they encourage members to stop using, and to have an open mind when entering a meeting. This allows members to know they are in the same position as other people in the room, and it allows a more comforting environment, as they are not to be judged. In the meeting they had twelve principles written on a dry erase board to those whom are willing to put effort in recovering.
The principles were stated to the members by a speaker, they read aloud the twelve steps to recovery: Number one, “Admit to being powerless over your addiction”, Number two, “Believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us”, Number three, “Make a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God”, Number four, “Make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves”, Number five, “Admit to God, to ourselves, and to another of our wrongs”, Number six, “Be entirely ready to have God remove all these flaws of character”, Number seven, “Humbly ask Him to remove our shortcomings”, Number eight, “Make a list of all the people we have harmed, and become willing to make amends to them all”, Number nine, “Make direct amends to such people wherever possible”, Number ten, “Continue to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admit it”, Number eleven, “ Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God”, Number twelve, “Have a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps”.
These steps were a realistic approach to get rid of addiction, and to make other addicts help one another. The members sought help because they knew they needed it, and they were willingly open to their personal lives as we went along the twelve steps. It was such a new experience for me, as I am someone who doesn’t understand the emotional and physical struggles of being an addict; The members helped exemplify with their own personal experience to help people like me to understand. The individuals who were seeking help for their addictions were able to take responsibility for their actions and themselves, and it was really amazing to witness. After having a speaker talk to us as a whole, there was a set table for newcomers, such as myself; I had went over their with my sibling, and we had sat down with the rest of the newcomers. We had been assigned to read the very first chapter of a handbook for the Narcotics Anonymous group.
The first chapter was about changing our thought patterns, changing the way we think, because that was the only way we were able to change our lives. The chapter continued on with stories of addicts who have suffered and how they could not function because their life was in shambles. After we were done reading, it was now open for us to discuss and share. The person next to me decided to share, and they were passionately speaking about their addiction; They continued on sharing how they were grateful for having an addiction, because without it their life would be ordinary. It was a colloquy between them of how their lives are extraordinary, and how they were able to set goals: have an amazing job and family. It really made me think of how there are many ‘regular’ people out there such as myself who do not have an active addiction, and it made me question: What are we doing for our lives? What are we doing to create an extraordinary life?
What goals are we setting for our lives? I myself is living the mediocre life the person beside me did not not want, and because of the person’s addiction they were able to be an active member of society. They were able to bump into people who are trying to recover, and extend their hand to them. It was such an evolved group, and they were able to strike many chain of thoughts in me. It made me think of how we as people are able to judge rather quickly. For example, when we see a homeless person, or someone who is high or drunk, we come to a quick conclusion that we should not help them because we think they got themselves there. We may not be addicted to drugs, alcohol, or any chemical substance; however, we can be addicted to negative thoughts, shopping, food, ect. The list goes on but it just shows how we all turn to something in order to hide the pain, and for those who have attended the meeting it was a substance that took the pain away momentarily.
The meeting was a great reminder to hold back our judgements or to just let them go, and to reflect them upon ourselves of how similar we are with one another. In conclusion, It was the willingness from the recuperating addicts that made the experience special. It was the willingness to let go, their willingness to leave the past behind, their willingness to take responsibility for their actions, their willingness to start over, their willingness to make amends and to ask for forgiveness, and this all was presented at the end of the meeting. At the end of the meeting we all huddled up into a circle, and then we all were told to put our right foot in, and our left foot out. We had created a circle of support and trust, the right foot represented taking a step into our future, and the left foot out represented leaving our past behind and our past mistakes. Then we were asked if there is any name we wanted to say to put in the circle, and we all had names to say, because we all know an addict. The tenants and steps I learned that night were something all of society can benefit from, because it does not matter if we are addicted to illicit substances we could all learn these tenants and steps. It was a pleasure attending the Narcotics Anonymous meeting and I learned more than any other meeting I will ever attend.

My Personal Vision is Based on Personal Experience
The purpose of this study was to review the research that has been done regarding interracial couples in family therapy to gain a better understanding on issues they face and insights that have been gained through the process of clinical practice. This study focused on heterosexual interracial couples with one of the partners self-identified as Asian. Interracial couples are couples who come from different racial backgrounds. Current research on interracial Asian couples consists of common issues these couples are facing, including marital satisfaction, parenting, acculturation, and culture-related stressors. Studies also cover some specific topics on interracial couples, such as coping mechanisms for stressors in same-sex interracial couples and intimate partner violence in heterosexual interracial couples.
Since there is a lack of research on same-sex interracial couples, especially couples where one of the partners self-identifies as Asian, or Asian American, this study will be focusing on heterosexual Asian interracial couples. In addition, there is research discussing how effective the therapy models are on solving problems for interracial couples. Further research might focus on clinical interventions in addressing issues same-sex interracial couples encounter, such as differences in parenting styles. Keywords: Interracial Couples, Asian, Couples Therapy Interracial Couples in Family Therapy with One Partner Identified as Asian There are more and more immigrants flowing into the United States every year, including Latin Americans, Europeans, Africans, Australians, Asians, etc. As the immigrant population grows, there is a higher chance of individuals becoming involved in interracial, interethnic, or intercultural relationships. Interracial/interethnic/intercultural couples face not only the common issues prevalent in couples therapy but also unique relational problems due to the differences in their racial/ethnic/cultural backgrounds.
There are various terminologies being used in the literature to describe couples with different racial or cultural backgrounds. For instance, “interracial couple,” which is the most common one, “interethnic couple,” “intercultural couple,” and “multi-heritage couple.” Although some studies use these terminologies interchangeably, they are actually different. “Race” is based on one’s physical and biological characteristics, while “ethnicity” is defined by one’s cultural background, including nationality, language, and so on (Leslie & Young, 2015). Therefore, in this paper, interracial couple refers to partners with more than one racial background, such as Black-White couples or Asian-Pacific Islander couples. Couples from different ethnic groups are considered to be interethnic couples.
For example, Hispanic-Jewish couples or Han Chinese-Arab couples would be considered interethnic couples. For the purpose of this paper, I decided to use the term “interracial couple” because most of the research I found focuses on race difference rather than ethnicity. As a result, in my opinion, the term “interracial couple” describes the subjects of my study the best. In order to understand issues interracial/intercultural couples encounter and learn what clinical models will be beneficial in family therapy, this study reviewed the research that has been done on interracial/intercultural couples. The study specifically focuses on heterosexual interracial couples with one of the partners self-identified as Asian, Han Chinese, Han Taiwanese, or Asian American, to be more precise. Brief Literature Review and Research Results It is said that couples with different heritages, backgrounds, characteristics, and belief systems are more likely to divorce (Blount & Young, 2015).
Although interracial couples tend to have more struggles, challenges, and misunderstandings regarding their racial/cultural/background differences, there are ways that therapists may be able to help. Unique Problems Interracial Couples Experience According to Leslie & Young (2015), interracial couples often come into therapy with the same presenting problems as “common couple problems,” including arguments or differences in parenting styles. However, these 'common couple problems' often play out differently because of the fact that the couple is interracial. As you dive into their presenting problems, the race difference often comes into play. Leslie & Young (2015) pointed out seven main issues that are unique to interracial couples: current social context, social support, racial privilege, racialized histories, racial identity, microaggressions, and communication. Zaker & Boostanipoor (2016) stated that the definition of “family” is culture-oriented.
The conflicts are rooted in major differences between cultures, which often fall into the categories of relationships, individualism/collectivism, masculine/feminine, problematic behaviors, and so on. Strengths of Interracial Couples Relationships Even though interracial couples have different perspectives on parenting, they could develop well-rounded parenting styles together. They may also develop a stronger emotional bond to defend the external pressures they receive. Moreover, studies found that interracial couples are more resilient and are able to accommodate themselves to their partners’ needs (Blount & Young, 2015). Interventions Leslie & Young (2015) stated that it is highly recommended to use narrative therapy as an intervention for interracial couples. The narrative therapy model allows interracial couples to talk about their cultural stories, which makes the couples realize how cultural messages contribute to their values and beliefs (Kim, Prouty, & Roberson, 2012). Although Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) mainly focuses on affect, cognition, and behavior, it is not commonly used for interracial couples. However, it may help clients understand their relational behavior patterns (Leslie & Young, 2015).
Yu (2017) also mentioned that it is crucial to be aware of the cultural influences on behaviors and thoughts when the clients are interracial couples. When counseling interracial couples with Asian origins, therapists need to pay attention to three primary aspects—how Asians view marital relationships, the insights of intercultural couples in the United States, and the conflicts they may have in different parenting styles. The study suggested that Solution-Focused Therapy and Strength-Based Therapy are beneficial to interracial couples with Asian ethnicity. Blount & Young (2015) recommended using the genogram as a tool during the assessment and treatment process. As the genogram illustrates personal backgrounds, such as ethnicity, religion, and family values, it can facilitate an understanding between the partners about their family origin and how it plays a role in their presenting problems. It is said that using circular questions is a technique that can reduce unequal power between the partners.
The main goals of the therapy models which work better for interracial couples are usually related to enhancing awareness regarding the other partner’s experiences, perceptions, and realities (Killian, 2013). The Visible/Invisible Grid (see Figure 1) is also a great tool to address the similarities and differences—no matter if they are visible or invisible—within interracial couples. During the discussion of the similarities and differences, therapists have to pay attention to clients’ emotional states and make sure it is safe for them to be vulnerable (Nguyen, D’Aniello, & Hayes, 2016). Figure 1. Visible/Invisible Grid According to Seshadri & Knudson-Martin (2013), there are four main strategies that help interracial couples to handle their racial and cultural differences, which include a “We” stance, framing differences, emotional maintenance, and positioning in relation to societal and family context.
It has been proven that love, satisfaction (dyadic adjustment), and the couple’s cultural identity correlated with the couple’s commitments in interracial/interethnic relationships, and therefore predicted the relationship outcome (Zhong & Malhi, 2014). In addition, Dainton (2015) asserted that positive maintenance communication behaviors are predictors of marital satisfaction and commitment in all couples. Therefore, interracial couples can enhance their marital satisfaction and commitment by implementing seven maintenance activities: giving assurances, being positive, being open, having social networks, sharing tasks, engaging positive conflict management, and giving advice. On the other hand, negative maintenance behaviors usually give rise to unstable relationships, which includes jealousy induction, avoidance, spying, infidelity, destructive conflict, and power imbalance. Considering Han Chinese/Taiwanese people as a whole, Wang (1994) claimed that behavioral, structural, and brief therapy models work well with Han Chinese clients. When working with the Han Chinese/Taiwanese population, it is important to take into consideration that there is still a social stigma on mental illness, and going to therapy has an implication of having a mental illness.
From my personal experience and perspective, I disagree with some aspects mentioned in the research, especially not recommending using the “date night” technique. However, this variance can be dependent on place of origin, which was brought up in the study. Implications for Therapy I would like to emphasize the unique problems that interracial couples may experience, particularly couples with one person identified as Han Chinese/Taiwanese, some basic information that is important to know when working with the Han Chinese/Taiwanese population, and what therapeutic interventions work the best for Han Chinese/Taiwanese clients. However, there are not many studies specifically focused on interracial/interethnic/intercultural couples with one Han Chinese/Taiwanese partner. Asian, as a race, includes a variety of ethnic groups—Han Chinese/Taiwanese, Asian Indians, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, and so on.
As a Taiwanese who considers Han population as an ethnicity and wants to work in therapy with people of Han Chinese/Taiwanese descent, I would like to focus on people with Han Chinese/Taiwanese heritage. Therefore, future research needs to be done on this topic based on clients/couples of Han Chinese/Taiwanese ethnicity. Similarly, it will be beneficial to conduct research in the future on therapeutic intervention models which work better on interethnic couples with one Han Chinese/Taiwanese partner. Current studies discussed useful therapy models for interracial couples and those for Han Chinese/Taiwanese people. Additionally, there is little research available on same-sex interracial couples, especially in the Han Chinese/Taiwanese population. The LGBTQ community has always been stigmatized in Chinese/Taiwanese society, and still is. However, people in Taiwan are going to vote for a referendum to incorporate same-sex marriage into existing laws. This shows that it has become a hot topic in Taiwan, Asia, and to the entire world.
Also, I think more and more people in Taiwan have become aware of the rights of the LGBTQ population and the issues they face. I believe more research has to be done on this topic in order to help the Han Chinese/Taiwanese LGBTQ population with their issues. Personal Responses/Reactions Although my partner is also Asian (Vietnamese-Chinese), he was born and grew up in the United States. He speaks English and some Vietnamese at home but not Mandarin. I was born and raised in Taiwan, and grew up speaking Mandarin and Taiwanese. As I am currently in an interethnic/intercultural relationship, I found there are some issues that I have never experienced in same-ethnic relationships. For instance, in terms of the language barrier, it is sometimes hard for me to convey what I actually want to express in English. In terms of cultural differences, since my partner grew up in the United States, he has some perceptions and values that are similar to Americans, which include how he views the relationship and how he thinks about money.
From my personal experience, I wonder what kinds of issues interracial/interethnic/intercultural couples experience, what areas I should be aware of in therapy, and how I will be able to help. I resonate with most of the dos and don'ts in therapy mentioned in Wang’s (1994) study. I think one of the biggest problems I encountered in therapy was that it was hard for me to articulate or even determine my feelings, the reason for therapy, and/or the presenting problems. However, as a therapist practicing in the United States, some aspects of therapy may not be applicable to Han Chinese/Taiwanese Americans. Being ethnically a Han Chinese/Taiwanese, I have to be aware of my own biases, which include not assuming all Han Chinese/Taiwanese clients have the same experiences and backgrounds as me. I have to be mindful of the cultural history I learned—my “reality”—particularly when working with clients from the People’s Republic of China (China).
Additionally, when working with people from China, it may be hard for me if they consider Taiwan as a part of China because I am a strong advocate of “Taiwan is a country.” If this knowledge causes me to change my attitude toward the client, I may violate the rule of non-maleficence. Although I may have biases, I also have strengths in working with the Han Chinese/Taiwanese population. I have a better understanding of the Han Chinese/Taiwanese culture and I know how to speak Mandarin.

The History of Mikoski Shoes in Argentina is Based on Personal Experience
Blake Mycoskie founded TOMS Shoes in the year 2006, when he realized what children in underdeveloped regions were experiencing living without shoes. He decided he wanted to make a difference in individual’s lives and created a shoe business that would donate a pair of shoes to a child in need every time a customer would purchase a pair. TOMS was rapidly growing, so Mycoskie expanded and developed new products of eyewear. Which followed the same principle as the shoes, every pair of glasses sold TOMS would use some of the money to restore the eyesight of a person in underdeveloped countries. As long as people continue to purchase TOMS products, individuals in underdeveloped regions will be receiving the necessities they need to help live life better.
A unique key element of TOMS shoes competitive strategy is that each pair of shoes sold, the company donates a pair of shoes to children in need in underdeveloped regions, like in Argentina. Customers looking for an affordable and fashionable pair of shoes also felt good knowing their purchase helped children in need get a pair for free. Also, the company offers their shoes at a lower price than rival’s and still uses good high-quality resources for production. Which means they are successful satisfying their customer’s needs. TOMS shoes decided that creating new product lines would attract a wide range of customers. Therefore, “TOMS started offering stylish wedges, ballet flats, and even weeding apparel in an effort to reach more customers and satisfy the special needs of current ones” (Peteraf, 2016). Finally, their main key element to their competitive strategy is their mission; asking customers to “buy into a cause.”
TOMS shoes strategy is best described as differentiation. First, by selling shoes with their stories behind the products, they try to appear more socially aware to customers, instead of using popular athletes like their rivals use for advertising. “TOMS focused more on selling the story behind the shoe rather than product features or celebrity endorsements” (Peteraf, 2016). The story behind the shoes is based off Mycoskie’s personal experience in Argentina, and how he got to experience the children suffering living without shoes. CEO’s from competing companies, like Nike, rarely appear in the company’s advertisements. Therefore, this method of advertisement allows the customer to connect to TOMS shoes.
Also, they concentrate more on making shoes for a better tomorrow, rather than charity work. As I said before, for each pair of shoes sold, they are donating a pair to a child in an underdeveloped region. TOMS has established relationships with over 100 non-profit organizations called Giving Partners to fulfill their mission for society. Giving Partners know more about the underdeveloped regions that TOMS shoes want to help. “Cooperative giving further strengthened the TOMS brand by association with well-known and highly regarded Giving Partners” (Peteraf, 2016). Finally, instead of spending a lot of money on expanding their store, TOMS has sustained an online shop that helped the company save money and enabled it to serve a large geographical area.
They focus mainly on a niche, as the company has been successful in the high-quality footwear niche market. In addition to acting responsibly and working with a charity. Mycoskie has realized that many buyers were willing to pay more for shoes that they know will go towards charity. The company therefore began to serve specific customers at a price that was not too cheap or not too expensive.

My Experience i Received from my Family Relation to Another Class
The idols of the Cave are those that vary from individual to individual, beliefs due to limited experience. They arise from culture, not nature. They reflect they’re up bringing from their family backgrounds, childhood experiences, education, gender, social class, and even ethnicity. “generally, let every student of nature take this as a rule- that whatever his mind seizes and swells upon with peculiar satisfaction is to be held in suspicion, and that so much the more care is to be taken in dealing with such questions to keep the understanding even and clear.” (4, Paragraph 5). Example of this is an individual’s background is more likely to their personal observations of events, things and beyond what they see.
I have had personal experience with this with my friends, I was brought up in a very mind opening house hold, mixed races, lots of siblings, being open to my own choice of religion, decent school, middle class, and being whoever, I would want to be as a person. Growing up with this mentality really showed me how childhood upbringings can really convert a person. Growing up so open, I learn to make my own choices when it comes to beliefs and politics but having very strong headed friends really showed. I have experienced some prejudice people and I have witnessed people devoting their life on the political spectrum and treat other classes in ways I could never. Befriending these people, I got to see inside their household, and it showed that these people I considered to know where the perfect clone of their own parents. Restating back to Bacon, my friends and even I have beliefs due to limited experience.
In conclusion, Francis Bacon with his rationalistic view of the world, he realized that unless you don’t use your mind to understand your own idols and engage in someone else’s mind, it would be impossible to communicate the truth of the world. The Four Idols states that Concerning the several classes of idols, all of which must be abandoned and put away with a fixed purpose, the understanding needs to be freed and cleansed that the entrance into the kingdom of man, is no different than the entrance into the kingdom of heaven, where no one may enter except as a little child. (6, paragraph 7). All four idols have their viewpoints, you can see sides of the positive and the negatives but when it comes to the senses bringing in the world you really see then you can contract because one may not see color, smell, hear or be strong in one or even all senses. Skepticism shows problems of believing we don’t know the world and we may never know.
Bacons sophisticated realism, in knowing your idols and overcoming to understand the world for what it really is. Suspend your judgement and go discover, go learn because knowledge is power, and power is knowledge. Bias is the assumptions you jump to before collecting any information of the situation. There are many people that are racist, sexist, homophobic and don’t even care. Bias can be sneaky, they are within everyone and you may not even notice. Your belief may be that everyone is he same, but you may catch yourself reacting with certain situations like; having judgmental thoughts of another actions, walking faster when you pass different races, or feeling uncomfortable in the presence of others different from you. I honestly believe you can overcome these biases, if you expose yourself to different settings, different people and opening to different medias. You can break bias by opening your mind and seeing from all sides to break the barriers. If you don’t at least try, then breaking bias will seem almost impossible.

Dreams are a Manifestation of Personal Experience
Explain the Issue
What exactly are dreams? Why are they so common, and what is their importance in day-to-day life? Dreams and nightmares are experiences that almost everyone can relate to in some way. While they can often be bizarre or hard to remember, they can impact one's thoughts, mood, and behavior even before waking up. Experiences like nightmares can disrupt sleep, force people to relive a bad memory, and leave lingering feelings of fear, stress, and discomfort. Dreams are one of many subjects about which there is plenty of potentially misleading, inaccurate, or unscientific information available, often in the form of trying to assign meaning to and interpret what is seen while sleeping. Because of all of the ideas circulating the topic of dreams and nightmares- whether backed by empirical data or not- it can be hard to decipher what is science-backed by research and evidence and what is merely speculation. The purpose of this paper is to research how dreams are studied and why they can be potentially beneficial or detrimental. It will also investigate whether or not they are more common in people who suffer from mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.
Examine Assumptions
Several personal assumptions about dreams were based on the notion that they would be hard to study. After all, the very personal experience of waking up late, and rushing to school in footie pajamas only to find that it has been turned into a spaceship and the teachers are all ducks, is unlikely to be a widely spread occurrence. Even though people can have similar events happen or see similar objects in their dreams, they often have very different contexts. Besides this, dreams can be hard to recall and are often forgotten soon after waking up. Another assumption was that dreams are related to the brain's processing of thoughts, emotions, and memories that were recorded while conscious.
This stemmed from the personal experience that things seen or experienced in dreams, especially images, are often similar to those seen and experienced while awake. This is possibly related to why some dream events, images, or themes are more widely experienced than others, as they might be based on experiences that are common to real life. A third assumption would be that, since there are themes widely common to the experience of dreaming, that dreams can be interpreted in a relevant way, if only broadly. For example, many people have dreamed about flying or falling, being lost or mazes, and routine experiences like school or work. Many nightmares involved feelings of being chased, public humiliation, or some sort of dangerous monster. It wouldn't be illogical to guess that these events in the unconscious mind were related to occurrences in the waking world or to established patterns of thought.
Research Summary
According to Matthew Walker and Scott Edwards, dreams are kind of like a smoothie- bits and pieces of memories woven together to create something new, intriguing, and occasionally terrifying (2020). Dreams occur mainly during REM sleep, which is characterized by faster eye movement and heightened breathing and pulse. Dreams can result in raised levels of creative problem solving, as it allows the mind to connect otherwise unrelated events, forming rules, forging links and working through puzzles the conscious mind had been struggling to solve. This sorting and evaluation of memories can allow for the processing of emotional or traumatic events in a less stressful environment, resulting in a less painful recall of the occurrences (Walker, 2020). However, sometimes these attempts at reevaluating events don't remove the attached emotions, causing the horrifying experiences we call nightmares.
They are frightening, resulting in strong negative emotional responses such as stress, anxiety, and as most people have experienced, fear. Several studies have found ties between nightmares and various mental health disorders- a criterion for diagnosing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is recurrent nightmares, which about 80 percent of people with PTSD experience frequently (Edwards, 2020). According to a study conducted by Aliereza Haji Seyed Jayadi and Ali Akbar Shafikhani on the correlations between depression and anxiety and various factors in Iranian medical students, 28.4% of those exhibiting depression had nightmares, compared to 3.9% of healthy students (Jayadi and Shafikhani, 2019). Another study found more symptoms of anxiety in adolescents who had better recall of bad dreams or nightmares (Nielsen, et al., 2000).
Examine Perspectives
The psychoanalytic perspective of psychology, developed largely by Sigmund Freud in the early twentieth century, would say that one’s personality is influenced by unconscious conflicts that begin in the early years as a result of interactions with caregivers and continue through life. These conflicts, upon being resolved or changed, could alter an individual’s behavior. This approach relied mainly on talk therapy to gain insight into the conflicts driving a patient’s behavior. It sees dreams and nightmares as an expression of subconscious desires and fears, which can make them easier to understand (Licht, Hull, & Ballantyne, 2017).
The evolutionary perspective is based on Darwin’s theory of natural selection, which suggests that certain traits are common because they aid in survival, and other traits disappear because they hindered it. It would argue that common psychological traits like fear of darkness or of heights has been widely inherited because it was useful in ensuring a longer lifespan (Licht, Hull, & Ballantyne, 2017). This perspective might argue that dreams are an unnecessary byproduct of sleep and a side effect of evolution, or, alternatively, that dreams serve a purpose such as stimulating creative thinking, which helped those who dreamed to survive and thus passed the trait onto future generations (Walker, 2020).
Both of these perspectives try to explain various behaviors: psychoanalysis attempts to explain unusual, abnormal behavior and try to fix it, while the evolutionary perspective tries to explain behaviors that are common and often considered normal. It also generally tries to work from a more scientific standpoint of gathering data and testing hypotheses, while psychoanalysis has widely fallen out of use due to a lack of support from experimental data (Licht, Hull, & Ballantyne, 2017).
Self-Awareness
At least one personal assumption was proven wrong by this research; although the exact content of dreams may be difficult to establish for study, the state of dreaming can be observed and quantified in several ways, such as monitoring the presence of chemicals in the brain, which parts of the brain are active, how long REM sleep lasts, etc. The research summarized above also established that bad dreams and nightmares are normal to some extent, possibly an emotional response to the brain processing recent events and feelings. However, they can also serve as a potential warning sign for stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental problems being on the rise. If a dream causes negative emotions in response to an event such as a test, an audition, a sports event, etc., it could indicate worries or fears about one’s potential performance and the possibility of failure. If one is prone to suppressing emotions or ignoring problems, nightmares may well serve as a metaphorical and literal wake-up call. Personally, as a result of these findings and individual experience, nightmares or bad dreams are usually related to stress over some sort of upcoming test of ability, prompting practice or studying to help ease personal anxiety and boost confidence about how a performance might go.
Establish a Conclusion
This research has found a correlation between bad dreams and mental disorders such as depression and anxiety, although there currently has not been enough research to determine whether or not nightmares can be a cause of mental health issues, or if they are a symptom, or if there is another variable involved entirely. However, dreams may be indicative of various mental processes such as emotions and thought processes, displaying them in an admittedly stranger and sometimes ambiguous way. Some new questions to investigate further include: are dreams capable of predicting behaviors? Can they actually show subconscious thought patterns? For example, if someone has a bad dream about failing a test, would they be more likely to score poorly, or to study so that they can do better? A possibility for more research in the future would be to gather more evidence for a correlation between nightmares and depression and anxiety. Another possibility for an experiment would be to track students’ dreams as they study for and take final exams in college. This would demonstrate whether or not there is a correlation between a student’s probability of nightmares and their test scores. A final possibility would be to examine the relationship between good dreams and how well various groups perform as well as how confident they are in their performance.

McFarland is a Story of the Characters’ Experience
The movie McFarland, USA tells the inspiring true story of seven young Latino males and their newcomer coach. As the title describes, the story takes place in McFarland, California, a poor, predominantly Latino town. After being fired from yet another job, Coach Jim White land at McFarland High School as the assistant football coach and life sciences teacher. White initially comes to McFarland with one goal in mind: to find somewhere better and get out. But White’s goal is later changed when he meets seven young and troubled students.
After witnessing a tremendous amount of athletic potential in some of the students, he becomes determined to form a cross country team despite having absolutely no experience with cross country running. One by one, each based on different circumstances, the seven teens are recruited and form McFarland’s very own cross-country team under Coach Jim White’s leadership. After initially struggling, White realizes that the lives of those in McFarland are much different from his and he must, therefore, adapt to their way of their life in order to help them become the championship team he wishes them to be. Through each obstacle, both the students and White learn things about each other that help turn the championship team into a family, and together they all achieve the dreams they never knew they had.
While language does play a big factor, I do not believe it to be the main obstacle covered in this movie, ethnicity is the main educational issue. When Jim and his family arrive in McFarland, California you can immediately tell that they feel completely out of place. While they are not exactly rich, it is so easy to tell that White and his family are used to having more. McFarland is everything that White and his family are not. Most of the people in McFarland are hard-working but struggling Latinos. White discovers that this school neighbors a prison and that many teachers expect their students to end up there. This is due to the way many of the students were raised in Latino culture. While later discovers that many of the students’ parents value work over education and expect the students to have the same priorities.
At the beginning of his time in McFarland, Jim White is unaware of those cultural values and therefore does not understand how to coach his newly formed cross-country team. When the three Diaz siblings quit the team, White is left dumbfounded, until he learns that the reason the students quit is because they did not have time to be on the team due to having to work with their father out in the fields picking every day. Another incident he comes across is when his star runner, Thomas Valles, becomes discouraged about being on the team after his father tells him that books and running are not going to het him anywhere and that working is the only way you can get anywhere in life.
After finding out these things, White realizes that he needs to understand the life and culture of McFarland better in order to properly teach and train his students. In order to keep the Diaz siblings on the team, White goes out to the fields one day to help his students with their grueling work. After witnessing the commitment that Jim White has to his students and their cross-country team, The Diaz siblings are allowed back on the team. Next, White tackles Valles’ problem. At this point, White fully understands that his students truly believe what their parents and culture have taught them: that school is going to get them nowhere and they need to focus on work instead. In order to change this mindset and prove their parents wrong, he spends extra time tutoring the students and coaching them better in order to get them noticed by college scouts at their meets. Slowly over time, the students start to believe that they can be more than their cultural norms state they can be.
They start to believe that they can do more than end up in jail or be pickers for the rest of their lives, and instead can be championship runners and college students. White notices these changes when a fellow teacher reads him an essay written by one of his students. White notices these changes when a fellow teacher reads him an essay written by one of his students that talks about how running has made him feel like anything is possible. Even though Jim White was thrown into a place and culture completely different to his own, he made it his goal to learn how to embrace and understand it in order to help better his students; he achieved that goal in the end by helping his students turn into championship running team and helping them all get into college.
Considering this movie is based on real events, then I would say that yes, it is realistic for today’s educational setting. I would also say yes based on personal experience. From what I have witnessed, many Latinos today still have the mindset that work is the only way to get anywhere in life, and that school is not essential. This mindset is usually passed down onto their kids and that is what causes them to become discouraged in school. However, from personal experience, I can also say that like the movie, all it takes is one person, usually a teacher, to change the mindset and help Latino students succeed in schools. More and more schools are implementing things such as bilingual programs and enforcing a more diverse curriculum to make students feel welcome in schools.

Chandra Bozelko Used her Experience to Gain Trust
After growing up in an upper-class suburban neighborhood in New Haven, receiving a Philosophy degree from the Ivy-League Princeton University, continuing her post-graduate work at John Hopkins in Public Health, and completing two years at Fordham Law School, some of Chandra Bozelko’s ideas may surprise you. With justice stories and issues abound in the news, she has become one of the most recognizable voices, quick to defend criminal justice and never concerned with providing harsh criticism of her colleagues in the media.
Recently the author displayed a tactical combination of both of her writing skills and her advocacy for protecting those in the criminal justice system, in a fierce rebuke published on the site creators.com. She masterfully blends her not-so-subtle tones of sarcasm and the use of rhetorical appeals to condemn profit seeking, ‘market-driven news’ coverage, and to question the integrity of her colleagues for continuing to fuel the public’s false narrative that has stoked anger towards the incarcerated through misleading stories. The artful placement of personal testimonials, expert theories, and statistical data of the incarcerated, powerfully support the authors thesis.
Chandra Bozelko wrote “Stop Lapping Up Fake News about People in Prison” (Bozelko, 2019). A scathing rebuttal and warning provoked by an article originally published by USA Today and subsequently published by many others like NBC News, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, New York Daily News, and The Washington Post. The original USA Today headline reported “Government shutdown: Federal inmates feast on Cornish hens, and steak as prison guards labor without pay” (Bozelko, 2019). The author’s rebuke was published on the website creators.com where Chandra is a regular contributor. The site is known for having a more conservative group of writers, and many major and local media sources redistribute articles published by its authors. The author states two issues as the basis for her thesis. News programming both locally and nationally are under significant pressure to sell advertising to increase profits for their parent companies. Profit pressure often leads to little or no fact checking before stories are distributed, as long as they are deemed headline worthy. The misinformation by the media has stroked anger against incarcerated people with headlines that feed into the public’s penchant for punishment. Stories like these have tricked the public into voting for tough-on-crime politicians. The ultimate damage impacts policy and the lives of average Americans.
The first thing the reader needs to know is Chandra became the first incarcerated person to have a regular byline in a publication outside of a maximum-security state prison in Connecticut, where she served more than six years for nonviolent crimes that remain on appeal. While incarcerated she also published a book of poetry, called “Up the River: An Anthology,” and she saved her unpublished columns to use for when she came home. Those unpublished columns became the award-winning blog Prison Diaries. Prison Diaries has won awards from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, three from the Connecticut Press Club in 2018 and two from the National Federation of Press Women, among others. Prison Diaries also won the Webby People’s Voice Award—considered the “Oscars of the internet” by The New York Times—in the personal blog/website category.
Although the author could rely on her experience to establish credibility, she chose to rely heavily on the tactical use of rhetorical appeals. Chandra immediately establishes a level of credibility stating: “As someone who has both ate and prepared these meals, I know prison holiday trays aren’t sumptuous or expensive” (Bozelko, 2019, p. 1). She uses another statement to elaborate on her personal experience, “In prison, special meals just aren’t” (Bozelko, 2019, p.1). There are several statements that are intended to challenge the reader to think logically. The writer uses sarcasm as an effect tool to provoke the reader and maintain a level of interest and intrigue. The sarcasm is also used to appeal to the reader’s logic with this comment: “Besides, any menu planned for Christmas was conceived well before the shutdown was a twinkle in President Donald Trump’s eye” (Bozelko, 2019, p. 1).
By offering a question the author is able to maintain the readers focus and attention on the two main arguments presented in the thesis. We need to examine why this faulty story was worth reporting again and again. We need to ask ourselves why we feasted on this tale so satisfyingly when it’s just another instance of ‘market-driven news’ cannibalization of this country (Bozelko, 2019, p. 4). The writer cites two responses from readers that responded to the original article published by USA Today on the inmate’s feast. Both comments are excellent examples supporting a portion of the author’s thesis that the media has stroked anger against incarcerated people with headlines that feed into the public’s penchant for punishment. The examples share hostile emotions immediately triggered in the reader’s effectively reinforcing her argument, “Gosh, we sure need to keep up the morale of convicted criminals, don’t we. This sort of liberal mindset is what is destroying our country!” wrote one reader about the USA Today report. “Democrats are more concerned about how these POS inmates are treated and could care less they committed crimes against good people,” commented another (Bozelko, 2019, P. 2). These are both very good examples of pathos and the immediate emotions ignited within the reader’s sparked by the original USA Today story. The comments also reinforce the power of rhetoric and the impact it can have on misinformed readers from the author’s perspective.
According to the researcher’s thesis, fake news stories have tricked the public into voting for tough-on-crime politicians who’ve enacted retrograde policies that ended up locking up a huge sector of this country. The author again suggests common ground with the reader by sharing shocking statistics regarding the number of Americans that are impacted by the criminal system, either directly or through a family member. Half of all adults in the United States--113 million people—have a family member who is or was incarcerated. Seventy million more were involved themselves with the criminal legal system (Bozelko, 2019, p. 3). Bozelko uses an expert’s theory to emphasize the original thesis. Duke University Law Professor Sara Sun Beale has theorized that “market-driven news” actually promotes punitiveness and discourages humane and proportional responses to crime. Beale says that even when crime rates were going down in the 1990s, coverage of salacious crime stories increased on local and national television news, because unlike the past, news programming had to make money and sell ads (Bozelko, 2019, p. 2).
The audience is the researcher’s media colleagues who provide news to their sources, the American public whom believe the information to be credible and trustworthy, as well as the executives within the networks who are more concerned with profitability than they are about providing factual news coverage. The genre is effective because it has a very large base of outlets and potential readers. The article is effective in supporting the author’s thesis and she provides various examples supported by facts, within each paragraph to support her main arguments throughout with the brilliant combination of rhetorical appeals, personal testimony, expert theories, and solid statistical data.
The USA Today story that was hastily redistributed by so many media outlets, provided an excellent rhetorical opportunity for Chandra Bozelko. The author was able to capitalize on her credibility as a respected writer , on two subject matters that she had very personal experience and knowledge of to effectively support a powerful two-part thesis.

I have witnessed the impact of mental illness through personal experience and understand how challenging the road to recovery can be. However, the experience of seeing an individual walk away lighter to live their own personal journey after healing from physical, mental, or spiritual wounds is a humbling experience. There is nothing greater than seeing a human-being alleviated from pain. Therefore, I aspire to become a mental health counselor and make a difference in my community through mental healing.
Mental health counselors have the opportunity to inspire a spark of hope in individuals feeling lost and alone. Altruistic counselors instill hope through active listening, highlighting strengths, and supporting engagement. Although, active listening is a conspicuous mode of communication, it is essential in fostering hope. Listening actively allows us to connect with, support, and adequately understand others. Listening allows counselors to better understand their clients’ point of view and thus, provide adequate mental health care. Furthermore, by appreciating the client’s perspective, mental health counselors are better equipped to highlight the strengths of the client to explore goals and progress through sessions. Finally, mental health counselors instill hope in individuals feeling powerless by supporting engagement.
Supporting a client's engagement includes discussing emotions and experiences, as well as gaining other supports and needed services to foster whole-person wellness. Supporting the client’s engagement is an empowering tool because it places the control back into their hands and encourages the individual to regain their voice. I believe a little spark of hope in an individual that feels alone in the world is the start of a unique and trusting relationship that allows the individual to feel heard and understood during lost times. However, it requires a willingness to learn and prepare to establish that vital relationship among counselor and client. Bastyr University’s Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology offers a holistic curriculum and hands-on clinical training that I am looking for to strengthen such skills needed to become a proficient mental health counselor.
What stood out about Bastyr’s counseling program that called to my attention is their value in whole-person wellness and emphasize in community. Humans are not machines that can be broken down into individual parts and clumped into symptoms when those parts malfunction. Humans are complex beings due to their unique subjective experience. Therefore, I aspire to take a holistic approach by investigating all aspects of an individual including their perspective. I believe by taking a holistic approach in understanding people, mental health professionals can have a deeper insight and adequately provide guidance. Consequently, I chose Bastyr’s program due to their holistic approach by covering complementary and alternative medicine. While reviewing other programs, I noticed that there was an emphasize in reductionism.
Bastyr University encompasses humanism in their approach to counseling and that was influential in my decision. Most importantly, Bastyr’s counseling program is multiculturally sensitive and inclusive by emphasizing the importance in understanding the entire context that affects the individual. That includes the social context in which the individual resides. Bastyr is known for fostering multicultural diversity on their campus and as a student of color, I want to be part of a campus that values diversity, equity, and inclusion of all people. Upon attending a tour of Bastyr, I learned that they provide multiple supports and services to their students to ensure opportunity and safety. My experience on the Bastyr campus was excitement due to their strong value in both diversity and humanism. In addition, a close acquaintance speaks highly of the university and her experience attending Bastyr. Overall, the atmosphere at Bastyr strongly manifests a supportive and encouraging academic environment that I would be honored to be part of.
I believe I can be an asset to Bastyr University due to my willingness to learn, desire to serve as well as my acquired counseling experience. I currently work as a part-time Residential Youth Counselor for Pioneer Human Services and as a Group Life Counselor for Sea Mar Visions Youth Treatment Center. As a Residential Youth Counselor for the Pioneer residential juvenile reentry program, my primary responsibilities are to supervise and support residents to create a climate favorable to social and emotional development. The three Snohomish residential homes serve boys between the ages of 13 to 18 years old who are struggling with emotional, behavioral, and/or psychiatric problems. Therefore, I am responsible for ensuring program and facility safety, monitoring resident movement, and supporting structured cognitive and behavioral-based programming designed to promote successful community reintegration.
As a Group Life Counselor for Sea Mar Visions Youth Treatment Center, I work with female youth undergoing intensive chemical dependency treatment. Similarly to my other position, I interact with the patients to best understand and empathize with their needs while maintaining facility expectations. In addition, I became certified in peer counseling by choice to provide the best support to those around me. I believe continued education is vital in the counseling profession and allows mental health professionals to stay informed. My work experience is relevant to the counseling profession because I work directly and empathetically with youth in need of emotional and psychological support. My skill set has enabled me to acquire expert knowledge in engaging young individuals in enjoyable experiences, helping them feel successful by providing positive support, and modeling prosocial behavior through my own actions. Furthermore, my interpersonal strengths and ability to connect with individuals of all ages and establish trusting relationships position me to thrive in this challenging role.
In Summary, my desire to assist individuals in need of a little of inspiration through empathetic connections is what led me to my career objective. My goals are to continue my passion, improve upon my skills, and reach my full potential to serve my community. My previous experience, complemented with my commitment to support and empower individuals on the road to recovery, I know I can quickly exceed the expectations of this role. I believe Bastyr’s counseling program is fitting to continue my passion and desire to learn due to their holistic approach, multicultural diversity, and value in community. Bastyr University’s Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology fosters an approach to counseling I am seeking in my postgraduate studies and it would be an honor to be part of your community. (TALK ABOUT COHORT FLEXIBILITY)
I have witnessed the impact of mental illness through personal experience and understand how challenging the road to recovery can be. However, the experience of seeing an individual walk away lighter and freer to live their own personal journey after healing from physical, mental, or spiritual wounds is a humbling experience. There is nothing better than seeing a human-being alleviated from pain. Therefore, I aspire to become a mental health counselor and make a difference in my community through mental healing. My previous experience, complemented with my commitment to support and empower individuals on the road to recovery, I know I can quickly exceed the expectations of this role would help me achieve my career objective through preparation of real-world experiences. Bastyr offers a holistic curriculum and hands-on clinical training that would best prepare me to serve my community.
The reputation of Bastyr University is the reason why I chose to apply to their counseling program. In addition, a close aquatnence speaks highly of the university and her experience attending Bastyr. Overall, the atmosphere at Bastyr strongly manifests a supportive and encouraging academic environment that I would be honor to be part of. This is due to their welcoming atmosphere, multicultural diversity, and beautiful campus. Furthermore, I hope to attend Bastyr’s counseling program because I believe it would effectively prepare me for the role of a mental health counselor. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), which would allow me to apply for my license upon completion. After successfully completing the counseling program and licensing exam, I will have reached my ultimate goal of becoming a Mental Health Counselor and hopefully work with the youth population.
As I previously mentioned, multicultural diversity is important to me because culture affects who we are as individuals, the choices we make, and how we interact with others. Almost any interaction is a cross-cultural interaction in some way. Although, its importance is known, there is still a lack of diversity represented in clinical research. Therefore, an area of clinical research that I am interested in is representing minority populations in clinical trials. I am attentive to the underrepresentation of racial and ethnic diverse populations in clinical research because different factors including race and ethnicity interact with therapies differently. Thus, establishing a more representative sample would help improve the mental health care for all people. In addition.
