Abigail Williams from ‘The Crucible’ (Character Analysis)
Sometimes people think they know someone but not everyone is as honest as you think. Abigail Williams from The Crucible tricked everyone into believing her lies up until the end. In Miller's play, The Crucible Abigail is seen as a selfish person who only cares about herself and a big liar.
Abigail Williams only really cares about what happens to herself and what she wants, she is pretty inconsiderate of how her action may affect other people's lives. For example, one night, stuck by a pin, Abigail accuses Elizabeth Proctor, of creating a poppet and sticking a pin in it to harm her. Abigail is trying to get rid of Elizabeth so that she'll have John all to herself but that makes her delusion because John would never abandon his wife because he is a candid man. Abigail clearly isn't thinking about what her ex-lover would want because she only really him all to herself. Another example of Abigail's selfishness is when Mary Warren appears to renounce her involvement in the court proceedings, Abigail is given the chance to admit that she was pretending. Instead, she pretends that Mary had sent out her spirit to harm her. In this event, Abigail can't seem to let up her lies and act like a child by not telling the truth. She is so ignorant if she thinks that this won't come back to bit her. What a surprise that Abigail is not only selfish but a liar too.
There are many people who follow Abigail lies but in the end, Abigail is the one to start them. An example of this would be when Abigail confesses to dancing in the wood but she fails to reveal the incriminating information of it all. She fails to reveal the truth so that she can avoid a good old hanging at the cost of other people's lives. People say that words can kill and in this situation, Abigail’s lies do cause the death of innocent people. In addition, Abigail insists she's a good girl to Reverend Hale's and then admits that Tituba was conjuring spirits and made her drink blood. First of all, Abigail will always fail to act in a good nature, she will never mature enough to turn into a good person. Second of all, Abigail will never be able to face the consequences of her actions and she's just lying to everyone including herself. Cleary she needs a good smack of reality and common scene so that maybe she'll be able to comprehend that what you may have consequences.
Overall Abigail Williams from The Crucible is a horrible person who only cares about herself. She lies and deceives everyone causing the death of many innocent people such as her ex-lover, John Proctor. All of her lies were in vain as she never ended up with John. In fact, she even causes his death, maybe she'll understand that what she's done in the future. Abigail may or may not grow from who she was in the story but only the author knows what's become of her.

Cooking Experience
Food has always been important for families. There weren’t always as many grocery stores as there are now. In the past, everyone in the family helped with food. They helped grow it, prepare it, and cook it. Children helped, too. Even more recently, family recipes were passed from parents to kids. Kids had to start learning how to prepare food when they were young.
Today, some families don’t spend as much time cooking and eating together. They don’t have to. Instead, they can get readymade food from restaurants or stores. It saves time in their busy lives. This is especially helpful if they can’t all stop to eat at the same time or place.
Other families now have many home-cooked meals together. Not all of them need kids to help as much. Some kids do help, though. Some of them really love to cook. Cooking teaches them many useful skills. It’s also fun and can be a good job for kids if they become talented at it.
Lots of people are amazed by the talent that some kids show for cooking. That’s why there are so many TV shows about kids who cook. Some older shows, like Hey Kids, Let’s Cook!, were learning shows. Professional chefs would teach a cast of children and teens new recipes each week. Viewers could learn along with them. Now, competition shows are popular. MasterChef Junior and Kids Baking Championship are examples. Kids who have developed skills in the kitchen complete challenges to see who is the best cook.
The chance to be on TV is a cool reason to cook, but not many kids will get that chance. Still, there are lots of reasons to cook. For one thing, many families have old recipes that they can keep passing down. It can be fun to keep up tradition. Another reason is that most people will need to cook eventually. Learning at a young age makes it easier when you get older.
At the same time, cooking comes with responsibility. Kitchen utensils must be handled safely. Ovens and other heating appliances must be used properly and turned off when not in use. Some meals take hours to prepare, and it can be difficult even for adults to stay in the kitchen that long. For some kids, it may be better to wait to learn to cook until they are older. That way, they will be better at paying attention to their tasks and safety needs.
Those children who do help in the kitchen will find it teaches them more than cooking. When kids help in the kitchen, they learn about math and science. A recipe usually involves measuring. Using teaspoons and measuring cups helps show kids how math can be used outside of class. Multiplication and division come in handy when a recipe needs to be made bigger or smaller.
Science is involved in the cooking process. Some foods taste better if they’re cold before they’re heated. Others need to be room temperature. Why is that? Curious kid cooks can find out. They can also come up with their own scientific questions as they go.
As with most activities, cooking will teach kids new words. They’ll learn about new foods and terms for different ways to cook them. Cooking can also teach kids about different countries. They can try recipes made by people from across the world and learn about different countries and people in the process.
Planning is an important skill in the kitchen, as it is in life. Preparing a meal takes a lot of thought. A cook needs to know everything he or she will need, how much time it will take, and in what order to complete the steps to prepare the meal. Getting used to all of that preparation can help kids plan other important tasks.
Whatever the reason for cooking, everyone needs to eat, and anyone can make something delicious.

I am a Special Person
Becoming a better person will not happen overnight neither can someone else do it for you. It takes desire and commitment. Some might say that their key factor in becoming a better person was setting a specific goal for themselves, so that you are focused to do things positively. Others might say that a tragic event or learning from errors in their life has made them a better person. I am no different. My past obstacles have made me a better person because of the many challenges I have encountered throughout my life.
Anyone who has been with a loved one while they take their last breath on this Earth knows it changes you. As I become older, I realize that the death of my grandfather was something I thought I could never endure. He was my hero. No matter what foolish things I did; he always encouraged me to be the best version of me as I can be. I decided to turn a sorrowful event in my life into something that can guide me, help keep me going and make me into a better person. Not only did my grandfather’s last breath give me a sigh of relieve knowing he was no longer in pain, but it has also given me the motivation to find my best self.
Shortly after my grandfather passed away, I as if my whole world came crashing down. I started questioning and nearly losing my faith. I stopped attending church because I was very angry at the world and at God. I often wondered what I did to lose my best friend. I later realized that this is not how I want to deal with this for the rest of my life. I decided to find God again. I put my differences aside, began with a new slate, and asked for forgiveness. This was a crucial obstacle I overcame to help make me a better person.
Finding myself was a difficult task throughout my life. I never truly found myself until my senior year of high school. I was known as shy my whole life. It has always been a big barricade in my life and I am not sure why. I have always kept to myself and made few friends. My mother always told me, “If nursing is the career you want to pursue in life, you are going to have to overcome being shy and the feeling of being unfit.” Starting college, was a good opportunity to start overcoming this fear of mine. No one knew how I was in high school and college was my chance to change. Slowly overcoming this step in my life and actually being my true self around everyone is going to be an important step in my life in becoming a better person.
Additionally, my relationship with my significant other has made me a better person. He has pushed me to be more ambitious, so that we have a brighter future. He has become my number one supporter throughout the many years we have been together. I have also learned the art of compromising and being more versatile. Being with him has made me so overwhelmed with gratitude. I often find myself saying “thank you” with more enthusiasm than necessary, to people who hold open doors and compliment me. I feel as if I am friendlier in general.
Lastly, nursing has played a significant role in why I am a better person. Why I continue to push myself harder than I ever have. Why I study more and do my very best to get good grades than I ever have before. With the help of my grandmother helping me and guiding me, I knew at a very young age that becoming a nurse was something I wanted to do. There was just something about participating in the human life cycle, being a part of patient and family’s lives, and making their experiences better. That is what makes me feel as if I have a purpose and encourages me to be the best person I can be.
These challenges I have overcome throughout my life are every reason of why I am the person I am today and why I consider myself a better person. My grandfather always encouraged me to be the best version of myself as I can be, as well as giving me motivation to do it. My relationship has made me better myself, by teaching me to express my feelings to someone else, having someone there for me to open up to and to help me continue to grow. When I am down, I think of my grandfather passing away and my significant other. They both have taught me very important life lessons to better myself. During a rough patch in my life, I nearly lost my faith and lost sight of god for a short period of time. Once I regained that relationship with God, I realized that was a critical part of bettering myself spiritually. Although, finding myself throughout high school and now college was a difficult task on my behave. I am slowly becoming more and more over the idea of being shy. I used to be scared to talk to people I did not know, due to the fear of being unfit and the fear of not being accepted by others. I think of how far I have grown as a person and my nursing career. I’m not only becoming the person I want to be, but the one I promised my grandfather I would turn into. Nursing has made me a better person already, because this is something I want to do for the rest of my working career. I want to be the most outstanding nurse I can be and do what I want to do more than anything else in this world, to help ill people. These are the reasons why I have the drive and motivation to be a better person.

Home, Sweet Home
From all the places I know, there is one that is my favorite. That place is my bedroom, it is a medium size room. The color of the walls are purple. I wouldn’t say it is an amazing and beautiful room but a comfortable place for me to be when I want to be alone. It’s the place that cheers me up all the time. The place where I feel safe when I am home. Whenever I need to read or study, my room is the most relaxing place for me to be in. Even though I share the room with my brother I would say it is like my own personal space.
When it's sunny outside and the curtains are opened the sun gets really bright and makes my room look beautiful. It is a room that is really organized. The brightness coming from the sun through the window is what helps me organize my room and make it look great. I have a small closet where I organize all of my clothes. It might not be as big as how a usual closet would be but its all I have and I am happy with it.
Most of the time I have my friends come over and the first place they come into is my room. They say it is a very calm and quiet place for anyone to be in. It is amazing because I can lock myself away from everything and everyone for a while. After every long day from either school or work when I am really tired the first thing I do when I get home is go into the cozy, calm, and great place that is my bedroom. It is a place where I can show my personality. A place that gives me confidence. Whenever I need to think about anything my bedroom is the place that helps me think and to helps me have trust in myself.
In my bedroom I feel safe because I can be myself and nobody ever stops me from doing anything. Just by seeing how beautiful my room looks makes me want to go and stay in there every day. After is has been a long day, and I get home all I do is run straight to my bedroom and listen to music. Even I lie down on my cosy bed and watch t.v or anything interesting that comes up. On the walls of my room I have pictures of my favorite band, pictures of when I met them, even pictures of me. My bedroom is the only place where I can make it look creative and decorate however I want.
Every morning, when I get up, I love to look outside the window and see the beautiful day that it’s going to be. Sometimes I just walk into my room and lie across the bed, not doing anything but daydreaming for hours. It’s sort of a habit that I have when i’m bored. Everybody has a place that is important to them. Bedrooms to me are a place that anyone can feel comfortable and secured in. My bedroom is a place of privacy where I need to be alone and feel relaxed.
My room is the sort of room, where you can tell that I love being in it. It is full of fun and peace. Almost every night I read there before going to sleep. I believe that my room is a safe place. My room is a blessing to me, and I really appreciate having it.

Analysis of ‘Invictus’
Invictus is a movie which depicts the events that shaped South African history. Four years after being released from a 27-year prison sentence, Nelson Mandela was elected the first black President of South Africa. His presidency faces enormous challenges including rampant poverty and crime. He is determined to unite the South African society that was torn apart. The ill will in which both groups hold towards each other is seen even in his own security detail where relations between the established white officers who guarded Mandela's predecessors, and the black ANC additions to the security detail, are marked by mutual distrust. Invictus shows the true power of leadership and the motivation Mandela held.
The 1995, Rugby World Cup became an opportunity for Mandela to create social peace in the country. The Blacks in South Africa hated the Springboks, an underachieving, all white rugby team. Only the whites supported the Springboks, until they began losing too much, whereas the blacks supported their opponents. Mandela was successful in moving towards his goal of harmony between races in the country by inspiring the captain of the Springboks, Francois Pienaar, to win the World Cup. Invictus gave us two main characters who were successful leaders with different leadership styles, Nelson Mandela and Francois Pienaar.
Nelson Mandela was a transformational leader. His goal was to transform the nation ripped apart by racial discrimination and hatred, globally changing the face of South Africa. Mandela possessed the leadership qualities of sociability, integrity, intelligence, and charisma. He concocted efficient strategies to help persuade his followers; efficient communication skills to voice his vision for the future of the nation was just the beginning. When he became president, he noticed that the employees were deciding to quit. Before doing so, he held a meeting with them to express his vision and encourage those who felt the same way to stay and be a part of the cause. When his security guards felt dismay about having white coworkers, Mandela informed the bout his goal and persuaded them to work together as a cohesive team.
Mandela did not just talk about his vision, he backed it up with action. It is a great example of “walking the talk.” If he stayed consistent in his words and actions, it would be easy to show his integrity and for his followers to believe it. I.e. “I’ll believe it when I see it.”
Transformational leaders tend to face difficult challenges on the path towards their goal, whether external or internal. Self-confidence, and commitment to morals and their vision help the leader face those challenges. Such qualities helped Mandela’s success. He strongly believed in forgiveness and forgiving of the whites for their past behavior towards him and the Blacks. Of course, he had a few nay-sayers, but he held his head high and stayed true to his values. By doing this, he led by example which persuaded his people to do the same. He was very inclusive exhibiting both people and task-oriented leadership. His appreciation for his followers impressed Francois. Mandela used his charisma and made an effort to remember every player’s name to give each a personal greeting. He also thanked Francois for his job as captain of the team and acknowledged the challenges he has faced. Mandela clearly had a need to create a positive work environment to make his followers happy. At the end of their meeting, Francois motivated his team with Mandela’s vision about the importance of a Springboks win for South Africa.
Different than Mandela, Francois seemed more of a task and achievement-oriented leader rather than people-oriented. He believed that leading others by example would improve the team’s performance. For example, when the team was exhausted after training, Francois continued to exercise, thus inspiring his team to persevere. In another scene, when his team showed little interest in learning the national anthem, after explaining what it meant he persuaded them to sing it. After the team’s visit to Robben Island, where Mandela was jailed, it strengthened Francois’s belief in the poem Invictus. In the end, Francois proved his success as an efficient leader when the Springboks won the rugby world cup.
Through sports, it is easy to replace hate with love. Sports creates a space that helps achieve unity between a team to a nation and a nation to itself. Mandela’s understanding of sports’ power shows that political leadership can do more than address problems of economies, jobs, and national defense it can also help social issues. The scenes in the movie of South Africa coming together over their rugby team creates inspiration.
We don’t need to know much about the sport of rugby, we just need to know what the team represents. Thus, making us look less to the result of the game, but more so what that result will do to the country.
A quote from the poem Invictus closes the film. “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul,” Mandela thinks to himself. What it shows is that even though people may imprison you unjustified, they cannot capture your soul. Keep your head high.

What is Gen Z?
Generation Z excels at multitasking, interactivity, spatial skills, and have remarkable visual acuity. These skills do not always transfer well with non-screen portions of reality. The on screen experience of members from Generation Z undermine their taste and capacity for building knowledge and developing their critical thinking skills.
When the journalist, bloggers, or scientists compare generations, one topic will now always be analyzed: technology. Technology can be known as the techniques, processes, or what can be embedded in machines to allow for operation without detailed knowledge of their workings. The most abstruse forms of technology are at our fingertips, but how harmful are they towards Gen Z? Born after 1996, iGen’s has become the first generation to grow up with instant access to the world wide web in the comfort of their homes. One subject that brings attention towards the helpful — or harmful — effects of technology, is the incomparably lower attention span between Baby Boomers, Millennials, and Gen Z. George Beall writes in the Huffington Post, “Today ‘relevant’ is constantly being refined and Gen Z lives in a world of continuous updates. Gen Z processes information faster than other generations thanks to apps like Snapchat and Vine. Thus their attention span might be significantly lower than Millennials”(Beall). Research shows that the average teen spends nine hours on their phone a day. Spending vast amounts of time looking at a phone, computer, or TV screen, our brains are accustomed to the instant gratification of the flashing screen in front of our face. Many believe the mobility and accessibility of technology nowadays have made people less responsible yet persistent. These “helpful” gadgets have eliminated the need to train one’s mind to memorize and plan ahead. Instead, just grab a smartphone to quickly calculate something, or schedule an appointment, or search for needed information on Google. In August of 2017, Jyothsna Bhat, who has a doctoral degree in psychology, posted a report on the National Alliance of Mental Health which brought concern towards children's health. “ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder for kids in the U.S. ... What is more concerning is that the prevalence of ADHD increased by about 35% from 2003 to 2011 alone”(Bhat). Kids these days are glued to their phones, and they have no clue how much it is corrupting their minds. Technology can make our brains adapt to instant gratification and weaken our focus, and end up causing one’s brain damage.
We are fortunate to be living in the age of technological wonders. Scientific breakthroughs and technological novelties draw as much public attention as news about wars, political scandals, and celebrities. In a way, scientists and developers have become celebrities themselves: Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, Stephen Hawking, and many others—these people who are or were rock stars in the world of science and technologies, which is making the world more connected. Gen Z-ers are birthing new ideas and theories, that cause the world to expand and advance because they have the access to platforms like Google that broaden their mind with only one click. Post-Millennials have grown with technology surrounding them to the point they, “...have more in common with their global peers than they do with adults in their own country.” Having quick access to the world has developed these young adults to acquire advance ideas and ways of processing information. Society can see the dreadful events that happen in the Middle East, or the benevolent people in Madagascar, due to the rapid rates at which news stories get posted on the intranet.
Middle and high school students have become conscious about how they have an impact on real-world issues and knowing that their voice can be heard as an individual. The associate director of the National Scholastic Press Association, Gary Lundgren, has noticed that the younger generation has, “...shown great interest in covering national issues at the local level, looking at #MeToo, mass shootings, the opioid crisis, body awareness, and vaping, and in some cases educating their parents”(Lundgren). Adolescents tend to join forces when melancholic events happen in their community. An illustration of this happened around 4 years ago, “...students at Walter Johnston High School in Montgomery County, Maryland, pushed for more mental health classes after a classmate died by suicide”(Strauss). Students are becoming aware of the hardships their friends could be going through, and they want to ensure that they know that they did something that could have possibly saved something you could never get back ? a life. Often teenagers no matter what genre is guided (or misguided) by peer pressure. In today’s society, parents are struggling with providing teens with advice because some parents can not relate to these intense issues their children are going through. Possessing the insight of knowing what changes need to be made to protect others’ health is a level of wisdom that no developing generation has ever had.
Blogger, Ryan Jenkins, calls himself “The Next Generation Speaker”, to which he writes, “Generation Z are looking for individuality because they were born social (92% of children in the U.S. have a digital footprint) and everyone has done everything (at least that’s what many individual's social media accounts would have you believe). Seeking uniqueness in the brands they do business with, future employers, and their leaders is a priority”(Jenkins). While I appreciate Mr. Jenkins opinion, I must disagree. During my lifetime, I have attended three different public schools. I have witnessed first hand that most people tend to dress, talk, and act like the person sitting next to them. Gen Z-ers tend to wear name brands and styles that are trendy, talk the same “slang”, and share the same memes (a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users). Individualism and intelligence are usually compared closely together, because obtaining different ways of thinking from your peers, will grow your mind. Unfortunately, individualism is one characteristic that Post-Millennials do not fully grasp. At least not yet.
While the oldest iGen-ers would be 24 years old this year, we have come to an understanding that going to college is not essential to being successful. Marty Nemko, who is a career coach, and has been interviewed by numerous notable forms of media, says that “...almost half aren’t graduating---- 41% don’t graduate even if given six years!”(Nemko). Not graduating from high school or college has always had a negative meaning, but this generation is changing that around for everyone. Being smart with your money is a characteristic that’s important to this generation, and that’s the main reason most of them are not going to college. These young adults recognize that they can have their dream job without spending the money to get the highest level of education. It is important to have a steady job and to make sure you can make a living for yourself. There are really great jobs you can get with and without a degree, so there should be no shaming of either choice. Determining the best education, whether it’s college or real life experience, to achieve your life goals and be the best you, is a really hard choice, but doing what is best for you is necessary.
So, is Generation Z the dumbest or smartest generation? Is technology turning our minds to mush or allowing us to truly make the world a better place? Has this generation lost all compassion for others or do we use today’s tools to make the lives better for our fellow students, citizens and people around the world? Needless to say, Generation Z is the smartest generation who doesn’t wait for things to happen - they want it to happen NOW; stands on their own...

No to Body Shaming in the Twenty-first Century
Change is a natural component of life, whether it is intentional or not. As Americans move into the twenty-first century, pop culture has changed the way they look at women’s body types. While body shaming of females used to be acceptable, now judging women based off of their looks is frowned upon by mainstream society. Women are encouraged by pop culture to embrace their bodies and be comfortable in their own skin.
In the early 2000s, women were constantly judged because of the way that their bodies looked. Not only was body shaming occurring in everyday life, it was also happening in movies, social media, and even magazines. In the drama, Precious, a 16-year-old young woman who goes by the name “Precious” was criticized because of her looks by not only her parents, but everyone else around her too. The character was abused physically and sexually, as well as verbally, but no one seemed to care about anything other than how she looked. For example, Claireece “Precious” Jones, a typical teenager who had dreams of being famous, constantly got her joy taken away with insults from her mother. In the past, body shaming was more popular in society due to its portrayal in movies.
The presence of impossible beauty standards of women in the past caused girls to be self-critical as well. This issue appeared in children’s movies such as The Little Mermaid and Alice in Wonderland, where the heroes or princesses were always skinny, and the villains had a little weight on them. Children were automatically questioning if they were pretty enough to be a “princess” at a young age. Whether body shaming was realized or not, it was a reoccurring issue that was never the topic of conversation. Moving into the twenty-first century, pop culture has begun to encourage all women to embrace their body types. Body positivity is shown on many different platforms, one being songs, such as “Pretty Hurts” by Beyoncé, “Who Says” by Selena Gomez, and “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor. Those specific artists have one common goal: to eliminate the need to meet the standards of beauty and embrace the beauty in imperfectness. Another platform where body positivity is now demonstrated is in movies, such as Pitch Perfect. In the film, The Barden Bellas is an all women acapella group that consists of women of all shapes and sizes. One of the ladies in the group is introduced as “Fat Amy.” Although the nickname is harsh, she makes it known that her weight does not define her, but in fact she embraces all aspects of her body. Self-love is an important concept in today’s society. Women all over the nation are consistently reminded of this idea in everyday life through things like social media.
Although body shaming is still around, it is now recognized as a problem that is in the process of being fixed. Change is not quick acting, it takes the growth of society, the development of the mind, and someone who is willing to commit to take action in order to fix the dilemma. The person who decided to stop ignoring the issue and attempt to solve it, was a woman by the name of Amber Rose. Beginning at a young age, Amber Rose was a victim of a number of different types of shaming, including slut shaming and body shaming. Not only can body shaming be described as the judgment of one’s body, but it can also include the ridicule of what a woman is wearing. Once multiple rapes were reported in New York, a Toronto police officer exclaimed that the reason behind the incidents was because of what the women were wearing. The comment infuriated women all over the nation, including Ms. Rose. She knew then that the issue had to be dealt with immediately, so she began a movement by the name of the “Amber Rose SlutWalk,” which still exists today. The objective for her movement is to empower all women to love themselves. Attendees of the festival are expected to be comfortable in their own skin and to support others who aim to do the same. Women have come a long way in the past decade, imagine if society continues to grow and support movements such as the “Amber Rose SlutWalk,” self-love and body positivity would become a new normal.
Now that actions such as body shaming are considered wrong in the twenty-first century, society can help women love their body type and discard any negativity that comes from others. Once everyone learns to love themselves, there will be room for positivity, love for each other, and then the world will be a better place.

“Blackberry Picking” (Poetic Techniques)
This is a delightful poem that includes the use of clear detail and brilliant diction. Qualities of a Good Parent
Anyone can be a father, but it takes a special man to be a dad. There is a lot to expect from becoming a first-time parent. The challenges and adversities are nonetheless an experience that everyone should get the opportunity to have. Unfortunately, not everyone has these experiences. Some parents have to do this alone, others have support from family members or friends, and there are single-parents. Either the mother raising the child on her own, or in some cases the father.
Merriam Webster defines a parent as “one that begets or brings forth offspring.” (Parent). Therefore, anyone can be called a parent who brings a child into this world. Most first-time parents do not know what to expect. It can be exciting at times and can be overwhelming. It is a true testament to the person that you are by sticking around through te difficult times. Your life changes drastically when you become a parent.
The majority of single parents are made up of single mothers. According to 2017 U.S. Census Bureau, out of about 12 million single-parent families with children under the age of eighteen, more than eighty percent were headed by single mothers.” (Census). Today, one in four children under the age of eighteen are being raised without a father. This is where being a father comes into play. Any man can make a child and become a father. But being in their lives is being a dad.
You cannot just earn the justified title of “dad” because you got a woman pregnant and she had your child. Being a dad is being involved in your child’s life. Being involved does not mean paying child support and seeing your child once a month. Being involved is paying your child support, having a parenting plan set up, seeing your child regularly, and attending life events and spending time with them. Even if the mother and father are not together, parenting can still be done.
Spending time with your child is important. This is one of the biggest things your child will remember. Not the huge toy you bought for Christmas, or that one birthday present. They will remember the one time at the zoo, or that time you took them to do something. Out of personal experience, children remember a lot more things than we give them credit for. Most of the time they do not remember the gift that you got them as much as they do the one time you fell off the swing when you were at the park with them.
In the Parents article, they state seven ways your life changes when you become a dad. One of the seven things was stating that your social life is gone (Shell). This is true, to an extent. Of course, it is not completely gone, but your child will take up most of your time now. Being a young dad, this was hard to deal with. Instead of going out on a Friday night with your friends, you are stuck at home with a child. It is was you make of it. This is where time comes into play. Make your experience gratifying. Have a game night, build a fort, or bake cookies. Your child will remember that for sure. They will also remember that you chose to go out instead of picking them up from their mom’s. It takes years of practice to become a good parent. Having your first child is a learning experience, but it does not have to be a bad one.
Being a parent is a huge responsibility. Not everyone is ready for it, nor should they be. That is what makes having a child exhilarating. You never know what you are going to get. One night may be tears and screaming, the other is giggles and playtime. It is your responsibility to be there through it all. After having a child, you are no longer your number one priority, it is at this point you have to learn to put someone other than yourself first. This is an adversity that is difficult to deal with, but it is very possible. Being a parent is a gift from God that should never be taken for granted. Being a man walking out of your child’s life is being a father. Anyone can be a father, but it takes a special man to be a dad. The trials and tribulations throughout life are no greater than being a parent. It is what you make of it. Being there for your child can not only improve their way of life but can be passed down to them as what it takes to be a good parent, father, and role model. So that they may do the same for their child in the future.

Where have you Come from Doesn’t Define you
“The Rose that Grew from the Concrete” by American rapper Tupac Shakur is about reaching our goals in life despite the hardships and conflicts that we face on the way. Shakur begins the poem with a question as to whether we have heard of the rose that has grown out from a crack in the concrete. Trying to refute nature's rules, the rose has learned to walk without shoes. While it seems strange, it has finally learned to live by breathing the fresh air around it by concentrating and understanding its dreams. The lack of attention and the surroundings did not prove to hinder the growth of the rose. Throughout the last lines, the poet shows encouragement by saying “long live,” and he says it has been able to live a long life as the rose concentrated on keeping its dreams alive. The tone of the poem is passionate, meaningful, powerful, serious and individualistic. The poem is highly inspiring and motivates the readers to realize and work on making their dreams come true. In life its not where you are coming from but where you are going.
According to the dictionary, by definition a concrete is a heavy, rough building material made from a mixture of broken stone or gravel, sand, cement, and water, that can be spread or poured into molds and that forms a mass resembling stone on hardening. The best soil to use when growing roses is loam. ‘The Rose That Grew From Concrete’ doesn't really talk of a rose, but instead of a man who grew from the ghetto. The concrete is a symbol for hardship, conflicts, low expectations and stigmas place on people who were raised in the ghetto. The crack in the concrete is the opportunity for people to rise from the all these negative expectations. And the rose symbolizes the few who take the opportunity to be great, disregarding the challenges they face and proving society wrong. The poem was composed by Tupac from his own personal experience and suffering. When someone is raised in the ghetto people tend to have low expectation of them. Some people believe that if you are raised in the ghetto you can’t amount to anything good. Tupac speaks about “Proving nature’s law wrong”, by which he means he is proving the expectations of others false. They don't think any ordinary person can grow up and change the society.
People who are raised in the ghetto didn’t born with a gold spoon to feed them. Alternatively, Tupac says, 'it learned to walk without feet.', which is stating without help and support he find his way. While real roses don't walk, the rose still serves as a symbol for someone who grows without support. The feet support the body and are required walking aid. Not only is there lack of compassion for the individual portrayed by the rose, he also lacks encouragement and even the basic resources required for effective action. Nevertheless, he is rising and making strides toward success. The stanza goes “Funny it seems, but keeping it's dreams, it learned to breathe fresh air.” It means he has made it out of the ghetto and is finally making something of himself. As long as you're willing to pursue your goals and ambitions, you will achieve them, regardless of your background or where you come from.
In the final word, the speaker salutes the rose rising from the concrete. He says, “Long live the rose,” the speaker suggests that the rose is deserving of great praise because of its successful battle against oppressive powers. The speaker finishes by saying the rose will thrive even though 'nobody else ever cared!' The exclamation point indicates the strong emotional intensity of the speaker. Without any support the rose and the individual it symbolizes have succeeded. The speaker compares high praise and disrespect in that final line to make the success of the rose even more meaningful.
In life not everyone was born with opportunities just handed down to them. Many have to pave their own path. A lot of times they are faced with adversities because the society we live in is wired to think and speak negative. Like if you’re from the ghetto you can’t amount to nothing good or if you’re poor you will remain poor. Which is not true. I wasn’t born to a rich family that opportunities are just handed to me. I had to work hard to be where I am at today. I grew up in a home where I don’t get a lot a of support. Everything I basically do on my own. And I mostly get negative comments that I’m not going to be great and that going to college is waste of time and money. But I see something different. I want to be different. The lack of support did not discourage it motivate me to work even harder and prove everyone wrong. Where you are coming from doesn’t define you it is where you’re going.

Imagine life without current technology. It would be hard for many people to survive very long without the every day technology that shapes societies around the world. Technology that can help people travel long distances in a short period of time, to communicate, and cure. The technology being developed is to be used in a way it can benefit the people and the society. Almost every common household device people use everyday is a result of years of technology research and testing. Everything from light bulbs to cell phones and computers are results or years of technology research and testing. The development of new technology can improve the quality of people’s lives because it can bring about change in many social, medical, and environmental aspects throughout the world.
The development of technology can have a huge effect on the social aspects throughout the world. According to Merriam-Webster, Technology is defined as, “the practical application of knowledge especially in a particular area” (Technology). Communicating with other people over long distances used to be a very difficult and slow process for some people, but with the invention and advancement of different technologies it is possible to communicate easily. With the development of telephone, internet and cell phone technology, people can communicate by phone call, through email, and by text. This technology has made it possible for people to stay connected with the people dearest to them, like friends, family, or other associates.
Traditional, or land line phones made it possible for people to speak with family and friends near and far, without having to wait for letters in the mail to keep them updated. The internet was another development in technology that made it even easier to connect with people. It made it possible to send digital mail instantly. Eventually there came many different social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and YouTube. With the use of social media sites people can have interactions with other new people from all over the world. For example, while someone is looking through their social media account and they see a friend they have not seen in a long time, or someone that moved away a long time ago, they can get in contact with them through their social media and be able to interact with them again. New relationships can be created with other people by sharing things on their social media about their lives through photos, videos, and music. Technology like cell phones are usually plug-in or transportable so they can go anywhere people want to take them. With the development of cell phone that are transportable, people can call anyone at any time – whether to let them know when they are in an emergency situation, or to let someone know where they are. Around the world there are even some technology that will let people to stay connected to the homes and even their vehicles through their phones. With the development of technology, the interactions between people can grow stronger.
While working in the advancement of technology the relationship between men and women traditionally has been very different. The STEM fields are male dominated. In a study conducted by Ann Lourens at a South African university, Lourens reported that there was an almost 6% drop in the amount of women engineers from 1996 – 2005. One of the main reasons was for social reasons. “As a source of self-efficacy, social persuasion refers to the influence of others. Hazari et al. [19] found that the presence or absence of social support influences course achievement. The women in the research study of Aluede et al. [20] identified social support as one of the strongest factors influencing their pursuit of studies in a technical field” (p. 116 Lourens). It is just like most social situations. They feel comfortable around people like them. So, for women thinking about going into technology, it can cause them to turn away because they think it won’t be enough other women there.
When most people think of technology, they think of an electronic device and modern advancements. However, not all technology is dealing with gadgets, and not all of it is new. Technology is the practical application of knowledge. So basically, the goal of technology is to solve a problem. In this way, technology has helped to create many advancements in psychotherapy. Psychotherapy has been around for hundreds of years and is constantly changing and improving. The methods that therapists use to help their patients are all forms of technology.
In a published article, Nadezhda A. Kasavina wrote, “The psychotherapeutic technologies of the social sciences and humanities are the result of a long process that has shaped its theory and social and therapeutic practice, as part of a specific cultural and ideological context” (p. 74 Kasavina). In the article, Kasavina talks about different applications, or technologies, that are used to help mental health patients. One of the technologies used is a social engineering one. The therapist uses social engineering to help the patient shift their focus from the “I” standpoint. They teach them how not to focus on themselves so much. As Kasavina also stated, “The therapist must also find a way to help a person develop a curiosity and concern for others. For this purpose, group therapy is particularly effective” (p.79 Kasavina). Group therapy is one of several different technologies used in psychotherapy every day.
Technology affects every part of our lives. There are even benefits of technology that most people may never think about. For example, technology has helped the sports industry. There are many ways that technology has helped in sports, but medical imaging technology has helped in ways that most sports fans overlook. According to an article by Bin Lv and Sihua Li, “The commonly used medical imaging technology has ultrasound, X-ray image technology, CT technology, and MRI technology. They have their own advantages and disadvantages, and according to the different situation, select a more appropriate medical imaging technology [3].” (p. 118, Lv, Li) When athletes get injured while playing sports or practicing, medical technology helps the doctors see through the bone and tissue to see what the problem is. This helps them diagnose the injury and come up with a plan to treat it, so the athlete can go back to his sport.
The changes the development of technology can have on environmental aspects can affect people and society in general in both good and bad ways. The weather can be very unpredictable and over the last few decades, it has gotten more severe. As the planet heats up because of global warming, new technologies have been invented to help slow it down. Many scientists agree that global warming is the cause for the extreme weather changes we have experienced. Those scientists also agree that carbon dioxide (CO2) is a major factor in global warming.
Over the years, there have been many suggestions on how to reduce our CO2 output. One solution by economists was carbon pricing. In his article, William B. Bonvillian wrote, “Policymakers in the United States and elsewhere have assumed for 15 years that putting a price on carbon would be an effective strategy for addressing climate change” (Bonvillian). Carbon pricing is a method used by economists over the world for reducing global-warming emissions by charging companies based on the amount of CO2 they release into the atmosphere. The problem with carbon pricing is that it was not as effective as everyone planned. Bonvillian discusses some of the reasons why it wasn’t very effective in his article. One of the main reasons he talked about was because the U.S. operates well from a place of innovation, but not necessarily fixing existing systems.
The development of new technologies can help solve problems in less developed countries. For example, with the help of technology, scientists and engineers can discover and develop new energy sources for people so that they can use it to improve the lives of themselves and others. Finding new ways to convert different forms of energy with little harm to the environment would be of big help in a long run to create a better future. There was a point in time where someone looked further down into the future about the amounts of energy sources from the earth being used. In the book, Solar Energy by David E. Newton, Newton discussed a French mathematics teacher who lived during the Industrial Revolution; Augustin Mouchot. Mouchot was ahead of his time in the way he thought about energy and how humans would need to use it going far into the future. He looked to a source that many hadn’t considered – the sun. Newton stated, “Mouchot believed that the answer to this question was to “harvest the sun.” He spent the better part of two decades, from 1860 to 1879, experimenting with a variety of ways of capturing sunlight, concentrating its rays, and using that radiation to boil water” (qtd. in Newton 14-15). The use of solar energy can help by using less resources the earth gives that are not renewable. Once they are used up they will be gone forever. Solar energy is the energy collected from the sun that is then converted into electricity or heat. The people can then use this electricity and heat for their homes and for preparing meals. Also, the heat created using solar energy can help with sanitation and cleanliness, for instance boiling water to make sure it’s safe to drink.
While there are many advantages to technological advancement, there are other things that the development of technology can harm. Technology and engineering are important to companies because they help them run more efficiently. Sometimes, those same companies have technology that affect the people around them, like the air the people breathe. Industrial pollution caused by factories can affect the air and water sources in the neighborhoods surrounding them. The same technologies that help the factories run better could be causing long-lasting environmental damage. Factories are being used all over the world and being used every day which are polluting the air that we breathe. The factories release harmful gasses to the people and the environment, like carbon dioxide, which results in global warming and damaging human tissues. It can be challenging to find solutions that work for the good of society in general, because the factories are very important to the people and the society needs them because that is what is being used to get new products needed for everyday life.
Another disadvantage of technology is dealing with the advancement of cell phone and internet technology. There are so many reasons why cell phones and internet have both made people’s lives easier and more difficult at the same time. As mentioned earlier, with internet, people can send digital messages instantly. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. The bad side of it is that people do not take the time to think very much about what they say or how it can affect others.
Cell phones and social media are technologies that have had major changes on how people socialize with each other. Before internet and other instant communication, people had to write letters to communicate with others. There was time to think about what to say before mailing the letter off. Even if the person were angry with the person he was writing to, there would be time to think about it before actually sending the letter off. Now with the internet, messages can be sent immediately after an argument or fight, which can make the problems worse. Every year there are cases of violence that escalated out of control because of social media, leading to assaults, murders, and suicides. Disagreements between kids used to be simple, but now with social media it is easy for cyberbullying. When a kid is bullied at school, the bullying stops once they leave the school. Now with the internet and people having 24/7 access to each other, the bullying never stops.
Information is easy to access through the internet and social media as well. While this is helpful when writing a paper for school, the access to information can be dangerous. In the book, Brain Vs. Computer by Jean-Pierre Fillard, Fillard discussed that “The constant progress of AI and of the power of computers have caused deep concern for many people, who claim that an immediate danger looms” (Fillard p. 237). The development of technology has been involving at an incredible rate especially since people can get all the information they want from the use of different technology. There are great people in society and there are those who choose to live on the dark side of society. These people make a living by stealing from others. More information is being sent digitally every day and that means that thieves may be able to get people’s personal information. There are constant news stories about data breaches where thieves have hacked into a network to steal people’s credit card and other valuable financial information. These hacks are only possible because people in the world are connected and have so many devices connected with their information on them. Data breaches and hacks can cause big financial problems for the victims as they try to get everything straightened out.
There can be a larger negative social impact that technology can have. Even though technology lets people connect with others from all around the world instantly, it can be the cause of a disconnect. Many times, people don’t socialize with the people in the room as much as they do on the phones. It is evident in so many public places that people do not connect the same way anymore. From grocery stores to malls to stop lights, many people are looking down at their phones instead of looking around them and speaking to the people around them.
Sometimes technology can be the cause of harm to the earth itself. Even technology that is intended for good can have negative effects on the land. There are earth elements used in every day technology. Those elements have to be mined or are formed as a by-product of mined elements. The creation of these elements can only happen if large sections of land are dug up, which is destructive to the local environment.
The development of technology allows the people to do things that we could never dream of doing. The development of technology is changing the way that the people live their lives. With the development of technology, the people are able to complete a task in a short amount of time with little effort and more productivity. With the development of technology, the people could find new type of fuels, so that it can be used to power the things the people need to use instead of using all the fuels the earth have to give. The development of technology can lead to a possibility where people can communicate with others without the fear of being hurt by others, so that the people and the society can live in peace. With the development of technology people can be brought together from all over the world and they can learn new things from each other and some of the people might find a common interest between them a create a new relationship. The development of new medical technology can help people by being able to determine what is wrong with the body either it be a sickness, or an injury and it will be able to heal faster, and new medicine can be found for people with incurable disease and come back with good health. With the development of technology, it can have a huge impact on the people and the society depending on how that technology is being used. The development of technology is a major factor in everybody’s lives and it is still improving, and it will change the people way of life and the society as a whole in the years to come.

Importance of being a Good Citizen
The history of the United States of America is long and filled with men, women and children that helped shape the culture of this inspiring country today. Of these historic figures, many of them had qualities that made them speak out against inequality, spread awareness for an issue or even become martyrs for a noble cause or needed change. These qualities can still be found in men and women today, and these important attributes are the very things that make you a good citizen. These attributes encompass other important things that you need to be a good citizen. There is an endless list of things that you could do to be a good citizen, but some of the most important are, supporting the government, be active and participate in your community, being a good neighbor, striving to keep the community clean, having a positive attitude, and being tolerant and inclusive.
The government is absolutely fundamental for this country. The government creates laws to keep the peace and insure order, the government imposes taxes to help pay for needed things to help keep the economy thriving such as, healthcare, infrastructure, and education. You can help support the government by simple things like voting. Voting is a fundamental process that helps keep the government working. It ensures that whoever is picked for a position that you vote for such as mayor or president has the support of the people and in not chosen based on things like nepotism or status. Paying your taxes is also crucial to keep the government functional. Taxes help the government pay for the amazing blessing of a free education for elementary, junior, and high school. They can also pay for healthcare for everyday people, including people who cannot pay for it themselves. The infrastructure is an important part of our lives helping us transport goods, travel and communicate. This is also a critical thing that is payed for by taxes.
To become or continue to be a good citizen you should also support the values that this government was based on, such as free speech, the right to bear arms, and the right against unreasonable searches and seizures as well as many others as found in the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights was made to prevent the government taking too much power and limiting the rights of the people. We should always support these amendments that safeguard individual liberty. The Bill of Rights helps us keep our liberty and ensures that the government does not turn into an anarchy and keeps us a democratic republic, where the majority of the power is held by the people. We can help to safeguard that power by supporting the Bill of Rights and the constitution as a whole.
One of the things that we as people, as a community, as a country, as a world, and as humans we need to work on is kindness, positivity, inclusion and tolerance. These attributes are important to being a good citizen and improving the community as a whole. According to Plaza College, positivity can improve your outlook on life, improve your desire to do well, it can help you have a more successful life, and can even improve your physical health! Positivity helps leads you to positive opportunities. Kindness goes hand in hand with positivity. Kindness betters your neighborhood or community, by spreading goodwill. Inclusion and tolerance are also related, the more tolerant you are the more likely you are to be inclusive. Inclusiveness and tolerance are based around one of the most important values that our whole country was based on; that is equality. In fact, in the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence (National Archives) it states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” These values are the very essence of a good citizen, and are, in my opinion the most important values you can have. One of the essential things you should have in your life is a support system. Support systems can support you through hard things, can help you if you need something done, and can just be there for you as a friend. To be a good citizen you should be part of the community support system.
One thing that this generation struggles with today is respect. Respect is a key value if you want to be a good citizen. According to USA today, “fewer believe students respect teachers and parents today.” (Toppo) They deserve so much respect, they are the reason we are all here today! They fought and died in wars to preserve the freedom of our, and future generations. My great grandmother was born during the great depression and grew up in a world where food was never guaranteed. She lived through the civil rights movement, the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin wall, and the end of the Soviet Reign. Most of their lives were infinitely more challenging than ours and they deserve the respect they have earned. The youth today need to respect them and the challenges they faced and despite all their challenges they brought us into the world. My parents are amazing. They are really hard workers, and despite how busy they are they still brought me and my ten siblings into the world. I know that I respect my parents and my really hard working teachers that sacrifice so much for us and still sometimes don’t get the respect they deserve. Respect is one of the most important things to have if you want to be a good citizen.
Citizenship is a really important role, and being a good citizen requires you to have certain values, fill certain roles, practice inclusion, kindness, tolerance, respect, etc. and support the government and its decisions and the morals and values that it was based on. To be a good citizen you need to practice these things, remembering them and weighing them in when you make decisions. In the Declaration of Independence (National Archives), it says that we hold these truths to be self-evident. These things are self-evident, they are obvious and should always be supported. The United States of America is the greatest country in the world and is founded on essential principals that should always be sustained, whether or not you agree with certain things that the government does. I hold all these truths to be self-evident, and so should you.

This poem called Ozymandias, written by Percy Bysshe Shelley, has some pretty interesting qualities to it. Ozymandias seems to be someone very powerful, and most people either follow his ways or die. The two other narrator point of views seem to fear Ozymandias, with the power he claims to have. Ozymandias seems to also have people who fear him, the poem introducing three narrators.
Ozymandias gets introduced as the third narrator, and the poem obviously displays his highness. He seems to be a cold king who sneers and scowls. “My name is Ozymandias, King of King; Looks on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!” This is a sentence used from the poem, though he is royalty or not, he certainly believes so. This quote helps the reader understand his belief in the power he has, who he believes he rules all. He may believe the people who are below him shall worship him, and listen to his commands. He may be a cruel king who teaches fear to discipline. It suggests why the other narrator may fear his visage, and why they are afraid of him. The way the poem describes the visage with a sneer and a cold command gives the reader a good image of how this statue of the king may look. He may be standing on his balcony, giving a speech to all the men who follow him. “...And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command.” The way the narrator describes the visage may make the reader feel bad that this king teaches fear. The reader gets the idea that he is not a good leader, and that he is a dictator. Ozymandias seems to be a strong person, who is far too over confident and believes he has much more power than what he actually has.
Throughout the story, there are three different narrators who speak. The first narrator is unknown, but they say they met a traveller who said something. After that, the second narrator comes in. The second narrator describes Ozymandias’s visage, and describes the cold look the visage has. The third narrator is Ozymandias himself, speaking with power and authority. “I met a traveller from an antique land.” This quote is what the first narrator had said, not giving much information. “Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, and wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command.” The second narrator spoke this, giving the reader a good picture. “My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;” is what Ozymandias had said when he introduced himself. He claims to have the highest title, being the King of the Kings. All three of the narrators seem to have their own personality, though we don’t get much from the first narrator. The second and third narrator definitely stand out. When the second narrator comes in, they use colder and harsher words. The visage obviously did not make the people smile. Then when Ozymandias comes in, he seems to live up to the second narrator’s words, showing a harsh personality and Ozymandias is cold with his words. “...whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,” “My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.” In the poem, Ozymandias says “nothing besides remains” and “round the decay”. There certainly has been war, Ozymandias says his words without care, showing that he may not care for the deceased who had died in the war. It could have been either his own, or the enemy, but he does not show much empathy to the people who had lost to him. Ozymandias could be celebrating his victory by becoming king, and being known as the one who had led the people through the war. Ozymandias could also be the enemy, and he has taken over the kingdom, and he is now their new king who has conquered all the other kings.
The three narrators and the strong words used in the poem gives the poem an interesting feelings. The way the author transitioned between the narrators may be a bit confusing, but it still adds nice texture and effect.
Ozymandias was certainly someone who impacted lives back in his time. Whether it was good or bad, he became the “King of Kings” and he had his face put onto a statue.

Does Montresor Feel Guilty?
Consequences don’t matter when dumping what made you feel like the dump. Murdering can be an abbreviated word as killing a person for any reason; nevertheless, it can also be used as self-defense in certain occasions. The Cask of Amontillado, a horror short story written by Edgar Allan Poe, was magnificent masterpiece which consisted of a strategically well planned murder from one of the main characters, Montresor, whose pain cannot resist the temptation for revenge against his dear old friend Fortunato. However, can his revenge be justified if he was accused of murder? Is he guilty of his crime? Or will he be free for lack of evidence?
As a matter of fact, there isn’t much to seek in for, no witness nor evidence for the reader to base a theory about it. Other than Montresor’s words such as, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (428). It can be concluded that Montresor has felt insecure and mad at Fortunato all those times he has insulted him, but the insult will never come to light because it’s not mentioned in the story. So what made Montresor not able to control himself this time? Was he exaggerating? Likewise, it could have been something related to his family like Fortunato did before his death with “I forget your arms” which is ironic because is symbolic in the Montresor’s family; a snake attacking the heel of the boot who’s about to smash it, and its motto is “Nemo me impune lacessit” translated to “no one hurts or attacks me with impunity. If Fortunato wasn’t so arrogant and careless, maybe Montresor would have change his mind of murdering him in the first place.
Furthermore, everything was in Montresor’s favor, the masks in the festival made the perfect timing for Montresor to guide Fortunato to his death and nobody can have evidence that they saw Fortunato with him. Under other conditions, let’s say Montresor was the main suspect for the murder of Fortunato, and they have enough evidence against him, can he be found guilty? First of all, there isn’t a specific year in the story but since it came out on 1846, the way court worked back then was different. The only evidence back then was eye-witnesses, and it’s already explained that nobody saw Montresor with Fortunato because of the masks. DNA wasn’t implemented until 1986; therefore, Montresor wouldn’t be guilty for his crime.
On the other hand, the worst-case scenario for Montresor would be if he confesses that he murdered Fortunato himself. Fortunato could have actually bully Montresor without knowing, but then there’s times he was ignorant towards Montresor’s nature. As Montresor said, “You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat” (428). It’s clearly to be emphasize his soul is like a shattered mirror holding up to anything that is hitting it. Is also Montresor’s fault for not revealing his feelings a lot sooner since he knew that Fortunato was a person with pride and insensitivity for not noticing his rage from his insults. Of course there were plenty other ways to fix the problem but as Montresor says, “A wrong is undressed when retribution overtakes its redresser…” (428). It describes Montresor’s idea of justice will only be successful is he does the suffering himself. But then again, would the court believe all of this? Words from the defendant will never be use as a reliable source for the judges, so since Montresor does not have any proof that Fortunato was the one who caused and triggered him to do such thing. His actions would not be justified, and he loses all his privileges and rights for a second chance.
Murdering is one way of getting rid of people who disrespects you as a human, but is it really worth the attempt? Consequences will always happen even when they are not yet deal with. Just as it happened with Montresor in the last part of the story, he was in denial and remorse for his sin. As Marilyn Monroe says, “everything happens for a reason.”

Moving to a New City and School
All my life I have lived in Texas and have moved now to 3 cities here. I was born and raised in Austin, Texas. After 4 years of living there I moved to Houston, Texas where I spent the majority of my life. After living there for 13 years I have now moved here to Tyler. Moving cities was always a scary thing and was a stressful thing for me. What I was mostly nervous about was me not knowing anyone that lived there. Everything is different, the environment, vibe, and it is way smaller then what I am use to.
My family lived Houston, TX until April, 23, 2017 at approximately 2 o'clock. It took a long time for us to pack everything and just looking back at everything and thinking of all of the good memories. It was a heartbreaking thing to do. My parents told my young brother and I that we were moving to Tyler, TX. I had no idea where that was because I have never heard of that city before. I was excited about this new experience as well as afraid.
I have always wanted to travel to a place where I have never been before, it was an interesting thing to do. We finally packed up and put all of our last belongings in the big uhaul truck. We then checked again to make sure that we took everything and said our last goodbye’s The drive took about 5 hours and just passing out of Houston got me sick. The roads were narrow and were surrounded by forests. We finally arrived in Tyler, it was nothing like Houston I thought. I knew nobody, all I knew was that I lived in the middle of a small non urban city. It was small and did not have all those roads on top of each other. At first, I was nervous about moving into a new home. One thing that really made me unhappy was having to share a room with my younger brother. I had my own room and my own privacy for over 10 years and I was enjoying it until we moved here. My family went from living in a big house into living in a small apartment. We set up everything without much hassle.
For a while our apartment did not seem like our home. It seemed more like we were on vacation. Eventually August came around, that meant a new school year was starting. Except I wasn’t going to be returning to the same school. I used to go to a Early College High School in Houston and transferred over here. I didn’t even know what to think. I was nervous about coming to this school because I have to make new friends and it just changed my whole life style. Not only that but I did not know where to go shopping or who to hangout with when I am bored, also what to do when I am bored. After going to school for a while and getting to know everyone it was not as bad as I thought it would be. I eventually made friends and everyone was cool with me. I went out with them and they told me a lot about Tyler. Now living here for my second year I love living here and would not call anywhere else home.
Moving somewhere you have never been before is always a scary thing to do and no one ever wants to do it.

“Lord of the Flies”: from Killing the Sow to Injured Ralph
Symbolism is a very powerful literary device that helps the reader better understand a novel. Certain colors can hold meaning, and this meaning can change throughout the novel. Lord of the Flies by William Golding tells the story of a group of boys from London who are stranded on a deserted island during WWII. The book displays Golding’s thoughts on how humans act when there are no societal rules. The novel uses symbols to show how quickly the boys on the island descend into violence, and how extreme that violence really is. This symbol leads to a deeper understanding of how when society is not watching, things can become horrific.
Golding uses the symbolism of the spear to demonstrate that in the absence of civilization, men’s unrestrained barbarity will reveal itself due to their primitive instincts. When Jack and the boys decide to go hunting in the forest, they hide behind the scattered trees waiting for the pigs to get closer to attack. “The drove of pigs started up; and at a range of only ten yards the wooden spears with fire-hardened points flew toward the chosen pig. One piglet, with a demented shriek, rushed into the sea trailing Roger's spear behind it. The sow gave a gasping squeal and staggered up, with two spears sticking in her fat flank” (Golding 134). As the pigs get closer, the hunters come out behind the trees and throw their sharpened spears towards one pig just ten yards away; one piglet who is terrified cries out while the sow squeals as it got struck by two spears. The spear symbolises violence and savagery as it is a weapon to kill and hurt; the words 'fire-hardened points' describes the sharpness of the spear indicating the damage it can cause to another creature. The boy's use of the spear causing the pigs to 'shriek' and 'squeal' reveals that without rules and order to suppress men's darker side, their evilness will lead them to destructive actions.
Again, when Jack and Roger hunt for more pigs, they stab and wound the sow with their spear. “The spear moved forward inch by inch and the terrified squealing became a high pitched scream” (Golding 135). Jack and Roger throw their spear towards the sow who is frightened; when the spear hits the sow, its squealing changed to screams of pain. The evilness and violence that the spear represent are presented when Golding describes the pig’s “terrified squealing' becoming 'a high pitched scream”; by hunting with the spears, it is like using evilness to harm and kill. The pain that the spears caused on the pigs reflect on the evilness of the boys and how they are becoming unruly.
Towards the end of the novel where Jack and Ralph split up into two groups, Jack’s tribe purposely injured Ralph with a spear. “The bruised flesh was inches in diameter over his right ribs, with a swollen and bloody scar where the spear had hit him” (Golding 183). Ralph’s right ribs were swollen and bruised as the spear cut through his skin and left him a big bloody scar. The violence and savagery the spear symbolises grow from injuring another pig to now Ralph; the damage that the spear caused Ralph reveals that the boys have become more vicious as they live without civilization. The evil instincts within the boys are now coming through in the absence of rules and order.
Through Jack’s actions and the symbolism of the spear, William Golding proved that without civilization, man will resort to his primitive and oftentimes evil instincts. Through the novel, Golding uses Jack’s action and the symbolism of the spear multiple times to show the progression on how evilness can come out of men when removed from society. As there are no rules and order the boys have to follow, the boys slowly realised that they have plenty of freedom. Their evil instincts caused them to make violent decisions and caused them to end up killing one and another. The message of the book is to address the importance of rules and order as they help us be civilized and think logically. Without it, savagery can appear which lead to chaos and division. Lack of order and civilization will allow the savage beast inside all human to reveal itself and cause people to become vicious.

Scrooge’s Transformation in “A Christmas Carol”
The main character in A Christmas Carol is Ebenezer Scrooge. He is a cynical, frugal, alone, and cold-hearted man who is in love with money. In the book he meets the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come; as he encounters the ghosts who help a change begin in Scrooge. He undergoes a metamorphose from his self-alienated life style to become a more open person, who is embracing life for the first time. He feels regret for all of his terrible life choices and wants to change. In Charles Dickens’s, A Christmas Carol, it is apparent that Ebenezer Scrooge transforms from being inconsiderate and rude to others, to someone who is capable of compassion and love.
For instance, Scrooge has no moral compass, he keeps Marley’s name on the plaque outside the business. He does not care that it is deceiving to have a dead partner’s name on the plaque. He only thinks about the money and cannot fathom the reason people enjoy spending money on each other because he has no concept about family. “What is Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money” (Dickens 22) he knows that people are in debt and cannot understand why people celebrate this holiday. He finds no joy in the Christmas spirit at this time in the story and is bitter and mean. Scrooge encounters Marley as a ghost, someone who is trapped in a human world and cannot continue to the afterlife to rest. He knows he does not want to be like Marley and fears having the same terrible fate as his former business partner. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows him his ex- fiancée and how she pities him because he is alone, and she has what she wanted. Scrooge says, “Remove me” (Dickens 95)! He cannot seem to stomach the agony of the past and how he treats others and how he does not seem to care. In contrast, Scrooge in the end of the book is more optimistic, cheerful, and happy. He laughs for the first time on Christmas morning when he opens the window. He is rejoicing because it is a new day and he got a second chance at life. This is a transformation for the best and is a change from the old cynical Scrooge.
In addition, he is a penny pincher when it comes to money and would not even let Bob Cratchit have a fire to warm himself with. He refuses to give money to charity collectors when they ask for a donation in stave 1 because he sees no need to help the less fortunate. He has more than enough money to help others, but he wants to accumulate it instead. An example of Scrooge’s hoarding, “I cannot afford to make idle people merry” (Dickens 23). He does not want to waste money on people he thinks are idle. His core belief is that people should work for money and not be given a hand out. In spite of, his past behavior he learns from the Ghost of Yet to Come, an eerie possible ending if he continuous on his path. He sees himself dead and everyone could have cared less. Three people come together and took possessions of his, they can be assumed as thieves, trying to get rich off of stuff that belong to him. This was a sobering sight for him to see no one mourn his death. This gives him a desire to become a better person, so people will be sad to see him gone. He helped no one in the past so from the present day onward he helps people and greets people for the first time. He decides to help others by giving to the less fortunate and help the Cratchit family. He becomes less anxious about money. He gives Bob Cratchit coal to have in the office, so he can be warm and gives him a raise. This life changing decision has made him a better person and a more generous individual.
Furthermore, in the start of the book Dickens talks about Marley, as stated before is dead, he was the former partner of Scrooge. They were each other’s only friend. This gives the book a gloomy mood and gives him a chance to describe Scrooges personality. The weather that is described in the book reflects how he is as a person. He is cold, and no weather can bother him. Fred, the nephew of Scrooge, gives a warm greeting to Scrooge and he says, “Bah Humbug” (Dickens 15)! This is Scrooge being cold and mean to the one person who cares about him. After the visits from the ghost, he wakes up on Christmas morning and there is “no fog, no mist; clear bright, jovial, stirring, cold” (Dickens 138) it is a beautiful morning. Dickens uses this weather to show the change in Scrooge and to brighten up the mood. He wakes up a different person and is happy. He is reborn and is taking it all in.
Scrooge is also a lonely old man, not wanting to make friends and wanting to be alone. He does not have a need to be liked and does not mind being on his own. He gets irritated by people, everyone avoids him, and are silent when he passes them on the street. He likes the darkness and cold because it is cheap. He is described as being “self- contained and solitary as an oyster” (Dickens 12) by Dickens. In the beginning of the book Dickens sets us up to think of Scrooge as a lonely human being who pushes away people. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows him, his past and he has pushed everyone away. He pushed his fiancée away because he wanted to be wealthy. He feels remorse of this past event and begins to understand himself. By the end of the story the reader will see a beautiful transformation from someone who hates people to someone who craves human contact. He becomes closer with this nephew and spends Christmas with his nephew’s family. He even sends a turkey to the Cratchit family, so they can have more food to eat since Bob has a large family. He is able to save Tiny Tim’s life because his more generous and cares about the well-being of others.
Ebenezer Scrooge makes a complete transformation in the book. He finds out about himself through the Ghosts of Christmas Past and makes the necessary changes to not have the same terrible fate as Marley. Scrooge was able to get over his fear to open up to others and become courageous to be vulnerable to let others in his life. This allows him to be able to be a happier and generous person. This book shows that people are capable of great change. It does not matter how grumpy or cheap a person is. Everyone can change. Ebenezer Scrooge went from a cranky old man who would not even let someone light a fire for warmth. To someone who loves to give to others and takes a great pleasure in participating in the Christmas time activities. Christmas time is a sacred time for many families all across the world, whether it be religious or not, people agree that Christmas is a time for giving and sharing joy with others. By the end even ole Scrooge learned that.

“She Walks in Beauty” by Lord Byron
Lord Byron is famous for love affairs and scandals. His sexuality is even questionable. Byron is rumored to have dated famous authors both men and women. “She Walks In Beauty” is a poem Byron wrote about his own cousin who he saw in mourning. Because of his eccentricity it is interesting to see his perspective on beauty as illustrated through his writings. In “She Walks In Beauty”, Byron uses strong imagery, metaphorical diction, and literary techniques to describe perfect beauty sourcing from both internal and external attributes. Throughout “She Walks In Beauty” Lord Byron characterizes a woman whose beauty is so beyond this world, that it makes the impossible, possible. Her beauty allows darkness and light to coexist. Byron begins by illustrating a starry night (light) and compares this woman’s beauty to that of the night (dark). She brings together these opposites in her beauty and creates a “tender light” (line 5). This “tender light” she creates is not like that of daytime, because he describes daylight as gaudy, but a light that “heaven” refuses even daytime. The women’s beauty and tenderness are like the beauty and “tender light” of the stars.
The setting can be visualized as a dark sky filled bright stars, an ideal evening, which can be compared to his ideal woman. Byron goes on to explain that if this darkness and lightness were not in the right quantities, “One shade the more, one ray the less”, her beauty would not be spoiled (line 7). He explains that she would only be “half impaired,” and therefore still radiant. Also, the combination of opposite forces, “shade” and “ray”, create balance in this woman. Byron implies that the convergence of light and dark within this woman creates a new thing that is greater than the sum of the two. The darkness of her “raven tresses” and the lightness of her skin do not contrast with each other, they create a well-rounded whole that is great enough to hold contrasting elements. Byron’s bold and striking comparisons must correlate to this woman’s striking external features. His use of imagery allows for the picturing of an angelic looking woman with dark hair and a lightface, with a soft aura surrounding her gingerly.
On the contrary, Byron uses different literary techniques to prove beauty is spawned from an interior source. The enjambment used throughout the poem aids in the deviating effect. For example, “the best of dark and bright/meet in her aspect and her eyes,” here Byron substitutes a trochaic foot for an iambic foot at the start of the fourth line because he wants to emphasize the word “meet” (lines 3-4). He is accenting this unique quality the woman possesses that makes her beautiful. In the same way that enjambment forces lines together, this woman joins together darkness and light within her features. They “meet” in her. It is also important to notice that the joining together can be seen in her “aspect” and her “eyes”. Eyes are usually associated with external beauty; however, eyes have also been linked to a window into one’s soul.
Another literary method Byron uses to distinguish beauty’s source is alliteration. “Where thoughts serenely sweet express / How pure, how dear their dwelling place,” focuses on this woman’s mind (lines 11-12). The repetition of the “s” sound is soothing and serene; it emphasizes the purity of her mind. The alliteration describes the inner beauty of her mind. These are vital techniques Byron uses to describe the woman’s inner source of beauty. Byron uses different techniques to fill “She Walks In Beauty” with contrasting light and dark imagery. In the first verse there is assonance present in words such as “night”, “bright”, “light”, “skies”, “eyes”, and “denies”. Although the same vowel is used in each one of these words the rhyming scheme is ababab causing a type of double effect. Byron uses this literary technique to subtly further the contrast between light and dark. However, his biggest comparison is between the woman’s natural beauty and the beauty found in nature. He implies that God bestows the woman’s beauty by saying ” Had half impaired the nameless grace” (line 8). He indicates that something so contradicting yet still so exquisite could only be formed by a “nameless grace”. Byron is convinced that a form of beauty so perfect could only be compared to the beauty in nature and is heaven-sent. She Walks In Beauty” flawlessly conveys the image of a stunning woman who possesses all of nature’s beauty, in its entirety, from the inside and out. Even though the descriptions of this woman may have contradicting attributes, the overall portrayal of this woman implies that these qualities have created a perfect harmony within her.
The overlying contrasts of darkness verses light have helped solidify this balance. The diction, imagery, and literary techniques Byron creates prove that this woman’s astounding natural beauty can be illustrated through the comparison of darkness and light.

A Dish i Like
Millions of people worldwide are head over heels with sushi and will swallow it whenever given the chance. Sushi restaurants have been cropping up across the globe and have become some of successful businesses during the past two decades. Sushi is full of protein and will fill you up quickly without making you gain weight since it does not have an excess of calories. This is the main reason why some of dietitians suggest it as one of the most ideal and healthy options for dining out. Even wonderful is that there are so many different tastes and textures that it is almost impossible for someone not to find a taste that excites their palate. However, critics of this view argue that sushi is just a simple dish, but they forget that it is the traditional food of Japan, with hundred years of development and technique, to create a dish simple yet survives and well known to this modern day.
When mention Japan, first thing comes to your mind is sushi, sushi is well known among countries around the world. But is it true that sushi actually from Japan? The history of sushi began around the 8th century in Japan. The original type of sushi was first developed in Southeast Asia and spread south China before being introduced to Japan sometime around the 8th century. Fish was salted and wrapped in fermented rice, a traditional lacto-fermented rice. The fermentation of the rice prevented the fish from spoiling. The fermented rice was discarded and fish was the only part consumed. Later on, the Japanese preferred to eat fish with rice. This new method of fish consuming was no longer a form of preservation but rather a new dish in Japanese cuisine. When Tokyo was still known as Edo in the early 19th century, mobile food stalls run by street vendors became popular. During this period nigiri sushi was introduced, consisting of an oblong mound of rice with a slice of fish draped over it. After the Great Kanto earthquake in 1923, nigiri sushi chefs were displaced from Edo throughout Japan, popularizing the dish throughout the country. Today the sushi dish internationally known as ‘’sushi’’, and by sushi I mean nigiri sushi, is a fast food invented by Hanaya Yohei (1799-1858). People in Tokyo were living in haste even a hundred years ago. The nigiri sushi invented by Hanaya was not fermented and could be eaten using fingers or chopsticks. It was one of the early form of fast food that could be eaten in public places. After all, it is important to known where sushi comes from, either enhance your palate or enrich your knowledge, both are beneficial to you.
At a glance, sushi is just a simple dish, but to be able to preserve the umami of sushi takes serious preparation. First, rice is one of the component that complete a perfect sushi. To get the right texture, it takes more than just following a recipe of the right proportions of water and vinegar. Every factor that goes into the process needs to be precisely accounted for, from the seasonality of rice crops to the air pressure that day. ‘’You cook the new crop rice with a lot less water than older crops because the rice itself has more moisture in it’’, says Taichi Kitamura of Sushi Kappo Tamura (Seattle, WA). In addition, rice also need to be treated with care, inexperienced chefs will often over-mix the rice, which causes it to become too sticky, making for an overly compact bite of sushi. Also, each grain of rice needs to be preserved and not broken up. As chef Tyson Cole of Uchi (Austin, Dallas, Huston, TX) says ‘’Traditionally you use a wood spatula to mix the vinegar into the rice, but if you’re doing it wrong without finesse, you’re just tearing it up’’. Second, fish need to be sources properly, most top restaurants import fish from Japan’s biggest fish market (Tsukiji) and have personally vetted their suppliers. ‘’I usually find the strength of each supplier, so I use supplier A for my tuna, supplier B for the sea urchins, and so on’’, says chef Yoshihiko Kousaks of Kosaka (New York, NY). Final, knives need to be in the highest form of sharp. ‘’Master sushi chefs will always sharpen their knives every day before service’’, says chef Katsunori Kawaguchi of Mozen Bistro (Las Vegas, NV). This is crucial to ensure that cutting is a delicacy action and not one driven by power. ‘’If you use too much pressure while cutting the sushi it will affect the texture’’, says chef Kawaguchi. In general, in order to produce a perfect sushi that satisfy any palate, preparation is a first and an important part for every sushi chef to become a master of this form of cooking.
A side from a delicious dish, sushi also a culinary art in which the chef is the artist with humble, dedication, self discipline. For a sushi chef to be able to standing in front of cutting table, it takes years of practices, refining knives skills, serving skill to perfection. For an apprentice, first they would start with cleaning duty, a sushi chef must always keep everything nice and clean all the time in order for the customer to get the best out of sushi. For example, a hot towel will be a sushi chef’s best friend as they wiping hands to deflect bacterias while making. Next, they would start to prepping sea food, depending which type of fish that they get from market, there would be different cuts and teachniques for every type of fish. In a salmon there are different in levels of fatness, with a belly there will be more fat, moving up will be more lean. With octopus, chef has to give it a rub with salt to remove slime and for the meat to be softer, this process could take to an hour. In every restaurant, there will be different recipe of rice, salt, and rice vinegar, the apprentice has to follow strict instructions from the senior. Once the senior has seen the consistency of apprentice, they will be promoted to a position which is called wakiita, which translated to near the cutting board, from there they will learn from the senior. Eventually, the apprentice might began to prepare sushi for clients with take away orders. Also, they will learns the proper ways to interact with and treat the restaurant’s customers by observing the senior. In addition, a great chef has the following five attributes. First, they take their work very sincerely and regularly perform on the highest level. Second, they aspire to improve their skills. Third is cleanliness, the food is not going to taste good if the restaurant does not feel clean. The fourth attribute is impatience, they are better leader than collaboraters, they are stubborn and insist on having it their way. And finally, a great chef is passionated. This can all be found in Ono Jiro, a Japanese chef and owner of Sukiyabashi Jiro, a three Michellin starred Japanese sushi restaurant in Tokyo, Japan. He who has been regarded by his contemporaries and peers as the greatest sushi craftsman alive. There is a documented fim which named Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Mr. Ono’s standards are obsessively high that he wanted to shoot each handmade masterwork at the supreme moment of deliciousness. For a newbie just come to a sushi restaurant, sushi is just a simplistic dish but behind that takes many hours and years of practices trying to reach the highest level and keep improving your skill just as one of the best sushi craftman Jiro Ono said: ‘’I do the same thing over and over, improving bit by bit. There is always a yearning to achieve more. I will continue to climb, trying to reach the top, but no one knows where the top is’’.
Sushi at first look is simple yet do not let it fool you, being simple is not easy, it is an art in which the chef is the artist and can make mouth watering little pieces of perfection in your palate. There will always be new techniques and new ways for food experiences. Before judgement, a simple dish can yield the power to make you feel good in every bite. A whole new sky of rich history and cultural can be found in this simple dish.

Book Review “Better” by Atul Gawande
First time I came across a non fiction book that too by a doctor which I found was hard to put down , I am really touched by each and every chapter of the book beginning from hand wash till how doctors perform under pressure in each part of world.
Book is written by Dr Atul Gawande , as the title suggests “Better” , book talks about improvement in performance. 3 things Gawande mentioned in his book which can make good at something ,they are Diligence, ingenuity and “Doing Right”. Gawande tried to illustrate all these qualities and did it beautifully with stories from his own experience in India and in USA and also with conversation and experience of other physicians
Diligence- Sometimes small things matter most , and there is a need to give sufficient attention to these small but important things to avoid mistakes, in his story he demonstrated that simple act of hand washing can dramatically decrease infections rate in hospital. Story on “Washing Hands” most simple yet most ignored infection control rule in hospitals. Ignac Semmelweis who was very forthright about views on hand washing in hospitals, as per him Hand washing was single most common reason for maternal deaths from puerperal fever in 19th century .But it took around another 150 years for others to realize this . But condition is no better even today, still doctors and nurses do not adhere to this simple policy . Yokoe and marino did every possible thing to make staff nurses and physicians aware about Hand washing , but still compliance was not more than 50- 60%.
Being Diligent is not an easy job , there are tons of things which oppose you from the diligent efforts that you wish to do, Many things or tasks we wished to do but could not do , then you realize that Diligence which seems very simple is actually Very difficult . Another story about polio eradication from India brings out outstanding achievement by Staff and doctors whose diligent efforts can do things which seemed to be impossible .
The story of US army is most inspiring to me, through diligence, surgeons could drastically enhanced the survival rate among causalities in Iraq .Surgeons realized and found that bottleneck in whole process was delay in care and treatment , Early and improved trauma care could drastically decrease causalities, they used knowledge and technology already in hand, Surgeons realized that wounded soldiers have Golden five minutes not Golden Hour , so Forward surgical teams were made, this is a great example of diligent effort by doctors in war zone. I work in emergency department, while reading this part of book, similar picture was striking in my mind ,that can i also do something like that for trauma patients coming to me in their Golden hour , can i also Make protocol of Golden five minutes rather than an hour, seems simple but soon i realized that i need to put diligent effort to make it happen as there are so many resistance on the way.
Doing Right- Chances to go wrong in medical profession are pretty high, as medicine is not only vast but very complex profession , it is therefore , always troubled with human errors, medicine failures, procedure failures, some failings may be due to human greed, ego, misinterpretations, misunderstandings and insecurity. So solutions and problem are going side by side in human traits.
First section of book focuses on need of another medico person in examination room normally called chaperone, this person is usually a female nurse which stays in examination room while medical examination of another female is going on, in most countries like UK they have standard protocols about Chaperone, about 4 % of disciplinary orders that state medical boards issue against physicians are of sex related offenses, I personally have seen many cases while in Practice in India where some of my fellow doctors are facing sexual harassment cases, so it is very important to have some standard protocols when male physician is examining a female patient.
Now a days, most feared thing in medical profession is Malpractice suit, problem is so severe that now each and every doctor in hospital need an insurance to save himself ,called indemnity. In US problem is more severe where 55000 patients sue the doctors , only few get compensation ( 1 in 100). Lawyers also charge a hefty money. In story lawyer Berry Lang, a independent malpractice lawer earns about $200k in a year, he gets about 5 cases in a year , and out of these , 4 gets the money
One doctor gets sued once in 6 years on an average and also pay around 1 million dollar as premium of insurance. In every profession there is a chance of error, doctors are also human beings , so they also do mistakes, doctors work under pressure and uncertainty, one odd mistake in doctors life can claim his licence , author gave example of Dr Kenneth Reed who faced charges of medical malpractice even though he tried everything from his side to give right advice to the patient. Doctors would never know when things will turn out differently, we as a doctors always try to do best for the patient , but still chances of making mistakes are always there. After mentioning number of stories where system failed , author also told about system that worked “Vaccines”
No matter how safe vaccines are but some children will develop side effects say 1 in 10000 or so, this led to law suits against manufacturers, this followed by manufacturers to go out the business , this caused shortage of vaccine , price hikes etc. To deal with the situation , American vaccine association came with an idea where vaccine will carry 75% surcharge, this additional money will cover all cases where vaccine caused side effects, compensation given usually satisfied the affected parties. One such example gives a hope that system still can be improved .
In next section author mainly writing things about how doctors are compensated, insurance companies had made doctors more like businessmen , to be successful doctors must take most of the insurance trouble themselves , Most doctors are dissatisfied with profession only because they are unable to sort to sort through the insurance morass. So where is the solution , some doctors did remarkably well , like Dr Harris Berman in 1971 , he did a radical experiment , where group of doctors offered patients on fixed annual fee without any bills to insurance company and they paid themselves a fixed salry, idea worked very well By the mid-1980s, sixty thousand patients had joined the Matthew Thornton Health Plan.
Next section of doing Right touch some troublesome and moral issues as if doctors should take participation in legal executions or not, if yes then what is the extent till which doctors can take part. I personally think that taking part in execution is not right for working healthcare professionals as on one side we want doctors to be empathetic with patients , on other side we want them to take part in executions , at the end doctors are also human being, it is not ethically and morally right for doctors to participate in such activities
Doctors are considered next to God as they are the only hope and stand between patients and their illnesses, they fight and fight for patients diseases. But for few successful doctors , element of fighting with illness is different , it is very easy bring ego on table, and when ego is there , patients are on huge risk. Doctors should learn when to stop, and let go of the egos, it is always better to get out rather than holding on egos. When to fight and when to stop and take help is crucial decision that every doctor should learn. All decisions are taken for patients, not for themselves . it is always about patients , not about doctors and his credentials and experience. Many good doctors understand that now it is not worth trying and let the patient die. It is same like doing a business, when business goes well, good for you, when business go wrong, it is time to do cost cutting.
Ingenuity – Childbirth was considered one of most dangerous event in any woman’s life till late 19 30 s, as mortality rate was very high, with the development of new antibiotics , new technology woman’s mortality rate came down significantly, but newborn death rate was still very high, most of the limp babies were considered non viable and left to die. Then there was Ms Virginia Apgar anaesthesiologist came up with score which could measure the child’s health status at birth. Apgar Score included some health variables and scores given to each variable , score 10 means child health status is perfect whereas less than 5 means child requires immediate attention. This metric soon became the instrument in looking at the whole delivery process and soon whole world recognised and used this tool for better outcome of deliveries. Improvements in perinatal care, postnatalcare, Post op care occurred using example of Apgar score
There is another story of Don Berwick, Dr Berwick used quantitative and diligent care to fight against deadly disease “ Cystic fibrosis” . message from bell curve story is we all have bell curve in our work , sometimes we do average work, and there will be times when you do extraordinary work. One should look into himself and see what kind of work brings best out of him and then keep at it.
Finally Author shared his experience of visit in India. He witnessed how doctors managed to work in difficult conditions , scarcity of resources and overwhelming patient load., He also witnessed that procedures and some operations are done based on shared and textbook knowledge , A general surgeon saved life of a boy with almost no resources in Hand.
He concluded “Arriving at meaningful solutions is an inevitably slow and difficult process.Nonetheless, what I saw was: better is possible. It does not take genius. It takesdiligence. It takes moral clarity. It takes ingenuity. And above all, it takes awillingness to try”.
Suggestions for Becoming a Positive Deviant:
1. Ask an Unscipted question- ask patients ‘randomly , machine begins to feel less like machine
2. Don’t complain- Nothing in medicine is more dispiriting than hearing doctors complain
3. Count something- regardless what ever you do – you should be a scientist in this world , in simplest terms one should count something.
4. Write something- write anything , does not matter it achieves perfection or not, it need only add small observation about the worl
5. Change- Look for the opportunity to change .So find something new to try, something to change. Count how often you succeed and how often you fail. Write about it. Ask people what they think. Seeif you can keep the conversation going.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” (empathy)
In short, the main idea of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is the conflict between good and evil, such as the racial oppression on the African Americans’ impact on Jem and Scout. The novel also draws parallels to people who are oppressed, regardless of their race, such as Arthur “Boo” Radley and teaches the importance of the Golden Rule. The overarching problem in To Kill a Mockingbird, or TKAMB for short was the case of Tom Robinson, an African American accused by the Ewells, a white family of raping the eldest daughter, Mayella Ewell. Atticus had to defend Tom as a lawyer because he was assigned to him, but anyone can notice that the Ewells were going to win, which leaves the readers asking why Atticus took this case so seriously. It makes sense for Atticus to have taken a stand to have defended Tom Robinson because he would teach his children the value of the Golden Rule and he would strengthen his children's trust in him.
To understand why Atticus wants Jem and Scout to know the Golden Rule, you must first understand what the Golden Rule is. At its basic, the Golden Rule is to treat others how you would want to be treated. It tells us that every person has their own problems, so we should help them rather than hurt them. So, why does Atticus want his children to know this? Because in their county, racism is encouraged and Atticus is trying to teach Jem and Scout the benefits of respecting and, if needed, helping others, regardless of their skin tone. He even states that if he doesn’t defend him how he wouldn’t be able to face his children. It would be like looking at a living embodiment of a mirror. A fogged mirror.
Atticus’ second reason for defending Tom would be to gain trust in his children. Throughout the book, it is quickly apparent that Jem and Scout don’t respect him as they do other adults. They call him by his first name and sometimes get annoyed by him, even to think to themselves “I wish my father was a demon from hell”(105) but they do learn from him. When Scout is asked how she can read, she responds that “(Atticus) hasn’t taught me anything”(19), but she has testified that she sits in Atticus’ lap whenever he reads. Now you might be asking, “what does that have to do with trust?” Well Atticus is teaching them without them knowing. It is like developing a good habit such as sports. You do what you love without realizing that you are helping your body and maintaining it healthy. Atticus is using this same approach to develop a conscience at an early age. He is trying to gain their trust so they won’t put it in the wrong people. He has even said it himself. “...I just hope that Jem and Scout come to me for their answers instead of listening to the town. I hope they trust me enough….”(101)
Some people may say that Atticus standing up for Tom would cause harm to him and his family, physically and mentally. This is because we have already seen that the kids are being viewed as the children of a “nigger lover.” However, they are misinformed because that is exactly why Atticus needs to do this. Atticus needs to prove to his children that the popular opinion isn’t always the moral one. The case wouldn’t harm him because who cares about what others think? Atticus won’t lose his job for helping someone he was assigned to and he won’t damage relationships because he is a very respectable and revered man, known for his lawyership and his marksmanship. It makes sense why this would bring harm to his family, but the Finch’s are well known. Scout is a fighter, amongst other things and Jem is picking up his father’s job. Not to mention that Atticus doesn’t care what others think and his children listen to him. With this, he can teach his children to have the courage to stand up for those who need it.
