The Merchant of Venice and Bassanio Portrays

In the play, The Merchant of Venice, the character that portrays the most evil behavior is Bassanio because he takes money from Antonio to win over Portia, only wants to marry Portia for her high status and money, and gives away the marriage ring that he receives from his wife.

Bassanio portrays evil behavior throughout the play, but particularly in the beginning. Bassanio is in search of love, but most importantly, money. Since men from all over the world fight over Portia’s hand in marriage (I,i, 168-172), Bassanio needs to borrow money from Antonio to impress her. By suggesting to take money from his friend (I,i,175-181) in order to impress a woman that he does not even love, Bassanio is selfish and evil. Not only does this show Bassanio’s malicious nature, but it also shows his true instincts about love and friendship. Bassanio would rather put his friend in danger and debt than have to go to a woman he admirers showing his true colors. Bassanio is aware that he is asking Antonio to make a sacrifice for him in his request for money (I,iii, 144-151), especially since all of Antonio’s money is invested in ships (I,iii,18-24). Despite this knowledge, Bassanio still carries out his plan to win Portia. These unmindful actions make Bassanio the most evil character with the most self-absorbed personality.

Not only was Bassanio’s behavior evil because he takes money from Antonio to impress Portia, but he also portrays immoral characteristics since he only wants to marry Portia for her high status and money. When Bassanio introduces the idea of borrowing money from Antonio so he can win over Portia (I,i,175-181), all of his convincing as to why he wants to be her husband revolves around looks, status, and money (I,i, 165-176). This was primarily the only way Bassanio was able to judge Portia since he had only actually met her once. Bassanio only cares about inheriting money, and in a way, “winning an object”, Portia, that is up for auction. Even though throughout the play Bassanio’s eagerness for money dials down, it was what attracted him to Portia in the first place. When Bassanio sees Portia for the first time, he is only sure about one thing that he wants from her, which was money, and not necessarily love. Moreover, Bassanio is certain that he wants to marry Portia while only seeing her exterior qualities, which shines a light on his true intentions. Bassanio, a true gold-digger, becomes attracted to Portia for the wrong reasons, which is why he portrays the most evil behavior out of the characters in the play.

An action Bassanio does which represents his sense of evil is when he gives away the marriage ring that he gets from Portia to the “judge”, who was disguised by Portia herself (IV,i,448-453). At first, Bassanio did the right thing by explaining to Portia that he can't give away his ring because he made a promise to his wife that he will never take it off his finger (V,i 440), which Portia was probably pleased by and comforted to hear. However, when Bassanio then gives up his ring and tells Grassiano to run after Portia (V, i, 448-449), it shows that he is not loyal to her and is a very bad husband. Even though Bassanio is pressed by his wife and is put in a tough situation, by giving away the marriage ring that symbolizes his relationship with Portia, he rejects the love he has for her. This action shows Bassanio’s insensitivity towards his wife, along with his disloyal personality.
Bassanio portrays the most evil role in the play because he selfishly puts his friend in debt just to win Portia’s heart, is only attracted to Portia because of her elite status, and unfaithfully gives away his marriage ring.

Michael Jordan was born in Brooklyn,New York. Born on February 17,1963, Michael is now at the age of 56 years old. Till this day Michael Jordan is still alive at age 56.He attended Trask Middle School and received multiple awards including one for basketball and football as well. In 1997, Michael started to attend Emsley A. Laney High School.There he was a very intelligent child and excelled in multiple sports: baseball, basketball, and football.

Michael is the fourth of a family of five children so he was almost the youngest in the family. His mother worked as a banker and Jordan’s father worked as a General Electric Plant Supervisor. Michael Jordan is one of if not the best player in NBA history. Michael Jordan after dominating on and off the court the entire year of 1990 he became the most decorated player in the NBA. Michael Jordan is a five time NBA most valuable player. Famous for being a six time nba champion in 1991-1993 and 1996-1998, Michael was the most admired and sought after player in the NBA for many years after he retired. Named Rookie of the Year in 1985 Jordan played a very important role in leading the team he played for to the NBA Playoffs and eventually the NBA Finals. Years later Michael retired from the NBA. He no longer had the desire to play the sport any longer, instead he sought to play baseball and eventually signed a contract with the Chicago White Sox in 1994.

The reason in chose Michael Jordan is because he is an inspiration to not only people that chooses to know about his particular sport, but everyone that knows about Michael Jeffrey Jordan see him as a role model to people off all ages all sports and all races. Michael was an amazing person on and off the court and he inspires me to do my best on and off the court as well and on and off the track. He never let any negativity get in his way of what he wanted to accomplish. Michael Jordan will always be apart of history and his own legacy.

Michael Jordan: most Efficient Player of all Time?

The National Basketball League has provided Americans with the highest quality expositions of athleticism and strength for nearly 75 years. The game has recreated itself from decade to decade gifting viewers with the never before seen scoring ability of Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain in the 60’s, or the invention of the Skyhook from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the 70’s, or perhaps the magical passing vision of Earvin “Magic” Johnson in the 80’s. Nevertheless, the game of basketball in the NBA has made its own additions and subtractions through the years, one major addition being the introduction of advanced metrics in the 1990’s. Advanced metrics or advanced statistics, allow coaches and general managers of sports organizations to have a better understanding of wins and losses.

By using advanced statistics to analyze how a player’s shooting percentages have declined over the last month’s stretch of games, action can be taken within the organization to help the player improve his jump shot. In 2005, a more complicated type of advanced metric called PER, or Player Efficiency Rating, was popularized. Created by John Hollinger, current VP of Basketball Operations for the Memphis Grizzlies, “...the Player Efficiency Rating is used to communicate the value of a player to the team and the return value of their negative and positive accomplishments throughout the progression of a basketball game” (Harris W). Some players such as Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors point guard, have benefitted from the new emphasis on advanced metrics. Curry’s ability to shoot the ball from range with such accuracy is seen as nothing short of a miracle to a statistician.

Over his 9 year9-year career, Steph Curry has attempted 5700 3 point3-point field goals and made 2500 of them placing him roughly around 44% in total 3 point3-point percentage (“Michael Jordan Overview” 1). His deadly accuracy has given him a boost in overall PER which is currently 24.1 for the 2018-19 season. Curry currently has the 17th highest rated Player Efficiency Rating in NBA history and is undoubtedly bound to be one of the greats of the game. But how exactly does PER correlate to the two most dominant legends of NBA basketball? Michael Jordan has the highest PER in professional basketball history, so one could ask, how does his PER push him above the second rated LeBron James in the debate of the greatest of all time.

There are 3 components of Jordan’s game that solidify him as the most efficient basketball player of all time: these are his impact, meaning the overall effect on franchise representation and wins and losses with a team, his shooting, meaning the efficiency of his shot selection, and finally defense, meaning his defensive efficiency and notable recognition for exemplary defensive play. It was those elements of Michael Jordan’s game that now help make his case in the longstanding GOAT debate.

Firstly, Michael’s impact on the Chicago Bulls franchise as a whole waswas something the league hadn’t yet seen. Impact is the effect on franchise reputation and wins and losses. United Press International stated in 2008, when Michael was 5 years removed from the league, his jersey was the top seller when the NBA Store revealed its list of top 10 all-time best sellers (“Jordan Leads All-Time NBA Jersey Sales” 1). Jordan’s career PER, which is an all-time best 27.9, allowed him generateto generate an offense that was electrifying to watch for Bulls fans and depleting for the opposing team’s lineup on any given night (Posnanski 1). The Bulls offense, in their 1996 championship winning season, had a league best offensive efficiency rating of 112.4 and Jordan’s efficiency rating was a league best 29.6 ("Michael Jordan Overview" 1). The Bulls finished the 1996 season with 69 wins and only 13 losses. That just goes to show that when it comes to Jordan’s ability to effect wins and the business of game, the numbers don’t lie. Comparatively, LeBron James’ current career PER is 27.7, just .2 under Jordan’s (Posnanski 1). As far affecting wins, in championship winning seasons, Jordan’s Win Share Percentage, which is the estimated amountnumber of wins contributed by a player, was 20.4 in 1996 compared to James’s 19.3 in 2013 ("Michael Jordan Overview" 1). Another aspect of impacting the game can be traced in a players Usage Rate. Usage Rate is the estimate of the number of team plays used by a player while he was on the floor ("Michael Jordan Overview" 1). Jordan’s 8-time league leading usage percentage was a compelling factor in the Bulls achieving 60 or more wins in the regular season from 1995 to 1998 (“Teams General Advanced” 1). Michael was able to rule the 90’s and dominate his opponents due to his efficient playstyle and the efficiency of the offensive and defensive sets Coach Phil Jackson ran through Michael.

The most prized possession a solid NBA player can have is their ability to shoot the ball at a consistent rate. Jordan was particularly efficient when it came to shooting the ball. Efficient shooting requires that every shot be taken only when its quality exceeds the expected point value of the remainder of the possession (Skinner 1). Michael’s true free throw shooting percentage, which is a measure of free throw shooting efficiency, was .835% over his career, compared to LeBron’s .736% ("Michael Jordan Overview" 1). In seasons with the league best record, Jordan averaged 11.4 FG per game while averaging 29.6 points per game, LeBron made 10.1 FG per game and averaged 26.8 points per game ("Michael Jordan Overview" 1). Michael’s ability to knock down open and contested shots at a spectacular rate increased the team’s efficiency. In comparing two basketball legends such as LeBron and Jordan one must look to the numbers to build an understanding of how their uniquely versatile playstyles earned them a plethora of awards in the prime of their careers.

Jordan earned 1 more than LeBron’s current amount of NBA Most Valuable Player Awards with 5. Jordan has 3 more Finals MVPs, 4 more All-Defensive 1st Team Honors with 9, and 9 more scoring leader honors with 10 ("LeBron James Vs. Michael Jordan Comparison" 1). Michael’s stats were a product of his selective shooting and timely passing. Shooting in the clutch is another defining aspect of efficient shooting. During his career, Jordan was famously known for his ability to knock down game changing shots in clutch time. Clutch time in basketball is generally defined as the last 5 minutes in the 4th quarter or an overtime period. In comparing career playoff game-tying or go-ahead shots in the last 24 seconds of the 4th quarter or overtime, Jordan made an amazing 9/18 shots (50%) in the defined clutch time during the playoffs. Comparatively, LeBron so far has made 8/22 shots (36%) during clutch time (Bains 1).

LeBron has appeared in 94 percent of his team's games in his career (ESPN). Although that's a greater percentage than MJ's 92 percent, it's worth noting that James has never played in all 82 games in a season, something Jordan did nine times, including in his final season with the Washington Wizards in 2002-03 (ESPN). Part of the allure of Jordan’s game was his elite defensive presence. Jordan earned a total of 9 All-Defensive 1st Team Honors and a Defensive Player of the Year Award in 1988 ("LeBron James Vs. Michael Jordan Comparison" 1). The New York Times emphasized Jordan’s stellar year in 88 stating,”Regardedstating, “Regarded as one of the most exciting athletes in the world, Jordan was voted the Most Valuable Player in the National Basketball Association last year when he averaged 35 points per game for the Chicago Bulls. Things have not changed much this year. Jordan is at the top of the scoring heap once again” (Curry and Yannis 1). Jordan’s offensive dominance was perhaps equally as threatening as his defense. Darko Mihajlovski detailed in a Bleacher Report article,”Jordanarticle, “Jordan had quick hands that he used to strip the ball and cause many fast breaks. Plus his ability to block shots was awesome too. He often locked his man without a problem” (Mihajlovski 1). In his DPOY season in 1988, Jordan averaged a league high 3.2 steals per game ("Michael Jordan Overview" 1). Jordan was able to dominate opponents with his infectious defensive peskiness getting the Bulls to win 68.7% of regular season games he played in from ‘85–98. LeBron has won 67.0% from ‘04–17 (Bains 1).

In comparing two of the greatest professional basketball players to ever play, there are bound to be certain statistics that fall in favor of LeBron James. LeBron’s unmitigated, freakish athleticism captivates the viewers at home and over his career has amassed him a global following like no other athlete has garnered before him. “LeBron’s scoring and efficiency (27.1 ppg on 53.6 FG%) is only matched by Wilt Chamberlain and his playmaking (7.0 apg) is the best everbest by any non-point guard. Not to mention, he can guard nearly every position and finished runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year in 2013” (Bains 1). LeBron’s career 3 point3-point percentage is .343% compared to Jordan’s .327% ("LeBron James Vs. Michael Jordan Comparison" 1). LeBron has the advantage in assists per game averaging 7.2 and rebounds with 7.4 per game. The career totals stack up at 8662 assists for LeBron and 8880 rebounds whereas Jordan earned 5633 assists and 6672 rebounds over his career ("Michael Jordan Overview" 1).

Michael Jordan played 15 seasons in the NBA and LeBron recently completed his 16th season. Certainly, there are aspects of the game that LeBron was greater at than Jordan but ultimately Michael’s impact on franchise representation, his ability to shoot and share the ball at a highly efficient rate, and his defensive prowess and the association’s recognition of it, cements him as the league’s most efficient player of all time. Michael retired with 6 NBA Championship rings and 6 Finals MVP trophies, LeBron currently has 3 NBA championship victories and 3 Finals MVPs. It is my hope that once LeBron is retired, more research will be conducted for the purpose offor revisiting this great debate ("LeBron James Vs. Michael Jordan Comparison" 1).

Michael Jordan is Better than Lebron James

If you were to say who the greatest basketball player of all time is who would you say it is. You may say Wilt Chamberlain,Kobe Bryant, Kareem Abdul jabbar or even Larry Bird, but the two names that stick out are Michael Jordan and lebron james. Michael Jordan and Lebron James are both very good at basketball, and guaranteed hall of famers. It is very hard to choose who is better because of how different things were in the 90s to 2010s, but it is pretty obvious who is better. Michael Jordan is better than Lebron James, and the greatest of all time in the NBA.

Michael Jordan has better stats than Lebron james. According to Land of basketball.com, Michael Jordan has more MVPs, All defensive teams, defensive player of the years,scoring leaders, and steals leader. By showing this it shows that Michael Jordan was a more all around player considering the amount of all defence team ,defensive player of the year and mvps. Lebron does not play very good defence compared to Jordan. Land of basketball also says Michael Jordan Scores more points a game and has more steals a game. This shows that Jordan was a better offensive and defensive player than Lebron James.Michael Jordan shows that he is better just by his stats alone, but there is more than one reason that he is better.

Michael Jordan played in a time period where players were tough, actual played defence and were willing to fight if they had to. Lebron James time period is soft, no defence is played, and they never fight. The NBA has implemented rules such as the Hand check,forearm check, or the 3 second violation. These rules make it hard to play defence without fouling for example, the hand check rule states that "A defender may not place and keep his hand on an opponent unless he is in the area near the basket with his back to the basket. A defender may momentarily touch an opponent with his hand anywhere on the court as long as it does not affect the opponent’s movement (speed, quickness, balance, rhythm)." According to Sportskeeda. Rules like these make players like Lebron James be able to drive to the rim without anybody playing defence on them. If Michael jordan played with rules like these he would have scored more points a game than he already did.

From Poverty to Superstar: LeBron James’s Childhood

Bang! LeBron’s shot goes in as the crowd yells as loud as they can, running across the court. LeBron is the king and one of the best in the world at basketball. Being a top-world celebrity it’s hard to think that a king started off as a peasant. How did he cope with such an obstacle?

Early Life

LeBron James was born on December 30, 1984, when his mother was just 16. His dad, Anthony McClelland, had left LeBron when he was born. Therefore, he had struggled to live with just one parent. He spent a lot of time with his mom and made a great connection with her. "My mother is my everything. Always has been. Always will be," he said. By the time he was eight, he and his family had moved 12 times because they could not get a place of their own. Therefore, LeBron’s mom took every job that she could handle, often working all night. LeBron was scared that his mom would not make it home. Alcohol and drugs were a constant presence. ” It was scary but I never got into any of that stuff.

That just wasn’t me…...I knew it was wrong.” LeBron stated. Beginning Sports It was clear that LeBron had amazing talent in sports right from the beginning. When he was eight, he began playing for the football team called the East Dragons. He had scored 18 touchdowns in just 6 games. Lebron started to dream that one day he could become a professional football player in the NFL (National Football League). Around the same time, LeBron also played for the Recreation- league team called the Summit Hornets. Although LeBron liked to play football more, he also liked basketball and had a natural talent for it. He didn't know that he would, one day, be a basketball star.

The coach of the Summit Hornets, Coach Walker, started to realize that Gloria was struggling to provide a good environment for LeBron. After he had found out, Coach offered to look after him until she got more settled. Gloria accepted and LeBron moved in with the Walker family. After 1 year, when LeBron was in 6th grade he finally moved back as Gloria found a home in Spring Hill. The Shooting Stars Even though the Summit Hornets were excellent, he had to carry on. LeBron joined a new basketball team known as the Shooting Stars in 1996. The new coach, Joyce, was thrilled because he had seen LeBron’s talent in the Hornets. The Shooting Stars did good in their first season, qualifying for the AAU national tournament in Florida. They did well finishing ninth out of 64 teams. In the next year, they qualified for the tournament again, finishing tenth that time.

Ready For High School

After his time in Middle School, LeBron and his teammates in the Shooting Stars decided to go to high school together. Most people thought they would go to Buchtel High School which was where athletic black students usually go. However, the Buchtel coaches made it clear that they would not put LeBron’s teammates on the basketball varsity team if they went there.

Instead, they decided to go to a small Catholic school called Saint Vincent-Saint Mary high school. In his first day in high school when he stepped through the door, LeBron was dumbfounded to see so many whites walking around the school. “I came through that door and thought, ‘this might be a problem, “‘ he said. LeBron didn’t know anything about their culture or activity or lifestyle. He was uncomfortable at first, but he got accustomed to it later on. The students also started to accept LeBron and his friends as well.

The Basketball Court and Football Field

LeBron at 6 foot 4 inches and 170 pounds, had everything he required to be a great football player; he joined the Saint Vincent-Saint Mary’s football team and did well. He caught eight passes in a single game. After the exciting football season, LeBron and his friends did what they had come to do in this high school. They proceeded to the basketball court under the direction of coach Dambrot. LeBron was shocked when the kind coach he had known in his childhood had turned into a “strict madman.” LeBron at first, thought that it was a mistake going to Saint Mary but later on realized that he was good for the game. A reporter had nicknamed LeBron and his teammates The Fab Four. In LeBron’s first season he had averaged 18 points per game but his coaches were not satisfied. They felt that it could be higher. LeBron led his team to an undefeated regular - season record in just his freshman year. The team went to the state championship where thousands of people were sitting to watch. LeBron’s team defeated Greeneview High to give Saint Mary their first championship in 16 years. The next year, LeBron was again on the football field where he would have an amazing season. By the end of the season, major football colleges were wanting to recruit LeBron to play for them after his graduation. As his high school career was starting to end he got more and more attention; therefore, he was named Ohio’s Mr. Basketball (best high school player of the year) three times in high school.

Life right now

LeBron is now one of the best and richest basketball players in the world: He has signed a 4 -year $154 million dollar contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. He has won various MVP (most valuable player) awards and became an all-star multiple times. He has won 2 NBA finals and is always ready for his next game. He went from poverty to living a lively and lovely life.

Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: History, Solutions

Israel is the only Jewish state in the world with over two hundred countries and have been involved in a conflict named the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict for seventy years, after the creation of Israel between 1947 and 1948 (Black). Israel has had the support of the United States, thus fastly being recognized as an official country by most countries in the world. At the same time, the land once known as Palestine, inhabited by Arabs, was now only a region next to Israel that had since then wanted independence and was never granted it. The conflict created by the creation of Israel started the Israeli-Palestinian War (1948- ) with the objective of conquering land (Baumgart-Ochse). Twenty years into the war, Israelian superior army forces, supported by the U.S., were able to double their land in less than a week. That period became known as the “Six-Day War” and affected basically any chances that the war always had to come to an agreement (Berger). Over the course of this seventy years the war has developed in many different ways, but realistic numbers of casualties have not yet been discovered. Therefore, to tell how war can be avoided, it is important to know the roots of the war, how it is still a lasting conflict, and how it has an important effect on people’s lives.

History of the War

The war started in 1947, the Jewish people, post Holocaust had gained support for their idea of a land where they could live peacefully (Nadim). After WWII, many countries supported that idea and decided in 1948 in the creation of Israel in the Middle East in a region known as Palestine, where Arabs had been living for the past two thousand years after Romans had first expelled Jews in the pre-christian era (Berger). Therefore, Jews started moving into the area of Palestine whereas Arabs felt that they were being displaced from their land (Berger). Jews were gaining land from the United Nations council who were not considering the fact that the Arabs were already there. That created tension between Jews and Arabs (Black). Meanwhile Jews wanted that land because it is said to be given to them in the Torah. The Arabs believe they were being kicked out of a place they had been living for over two thousand years (Nadim). With all the tension, the war broke out in 1967 (Black). The first years of the conflict hadn’t been so active (Black). Both Israel and Palestine were not able to advance into each other’s territory; however, that changed when other Arab countries, such as Egypt and Syria, supported Palestine (Berger).

A potential agreement failed to be signed in 1967, and therefore the Arab troops decided to attack in what became known as the Six-Day War (Black). Egyptian forces decided that if they could not reach an agreement of division of land equally, it was time to attack, and so they did. Egypt attacked Israel in the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza strip, the Israeli forces were superior because they had support of the American government, so they easily won the war by counter attacking and conquering in hours the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip from Egypt (Berger). As the war was over quickly, “On June 5, Israel's prime minister, Levi Eshkol, launched a first strike. At 7:45am Israeli jets attacked Egypt's air bases in Sinai and Suez: by mid-morning the Egyptian air force was all but wiped out” (Black). At the same time, in the other side of Israel, Syria sent tanks with Palestinian forces to attack Israel, but the superior Israeli force once again won the battle in less than a week conquering the strategic Golan Heights and the West Bank, including the Old City (part of the city of Jerusalem) (Black). The war that started on June 5, had a ceasefire on June 10, and Israel had won the war over the Arab forces (Black). By the end of the war Israel had doubled its land and more than 2 million Palestinians had been displaced and were living illegally in Israel’s new territory (Indyk).

Solution I

Knowing the history of the conflict and how it affects people still today, it can finally be discussed how to avoid more of it. There have been multiple attempts of ending the conflict; however, as mentioned before, it is almost utopic to say that it will happen. Therefore, the question that arises is, “How can we mitigate the conflict, so that less innocent people are affected by it”. Hence, Braun-Lewenson and Kitain have concluded that, “several studies have shown that peace education program had a positive effect and resulted in the acceptance of the ‘other’.” (182). In their journal, they come to an agreement that education has changed the lives of million of people in the Israeli-Palestinian region, and have effectively mitigated the hatred between each population (Lewenson & Kitain). However, something else they noticed is how education may fail towards people who are more religious and often practice their beliefs. As they wrote, “Very few studies have examined subgroups in Israeli society regarding their attitudes toward the others’ narratives (e.g., Ben-Ami-Shapski 2005; Yaar and Herman 2010). These concluded that the more religious the person, the more negative the attitudes toward the Palestinian narrative and the more positive attitudes toward the Israeli narrative (Tsemach 2010).” - (Braun-Lewenson & Kitain, 183).

What they meant by that was the more religious the group that harder it was to convince them that there was another side they could look at. Knowing that, one could say that right now we still have a majority of religious people living in the region; however, with the growing secularism in the world, the same person could say that there is a “light at the end of tunnel” that could indicate a possible end of the conflict towards education in a far future.

Solution II

Micro solutions are one of the way the conflict can be solved. However, many people believe that to change, you need a huge effort by the government. In the macro scheme, many potential agreements have been made, but they all fail. The closest one to conclude its goal was the Oslo peace agreement in 1993. Baumgart-Ochse states, “Rabin (Leader of Israel at the time), at first reluctant, eventually agreed to the terms of the negotiations and accepted the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the representative of the Palestinian people. Arafat, in turn, accepted the legitimacy of the State of Israel.” (417). After the Oslo agreement, the conflict saw some peace that it hadn’t experienced since the start of the conflict back in 1950. That created the idea that the government has tried to end the conflict; however, I believe that maybe instead of trying to form an agreement, the governments should make long lasting programs that can mitigate and end the conflict. As, Nadim Khoury wrote, “History, in other words, had to be negotiated with the aim of making it coterminous with the borders of the future Israeli and Palestinian states.” (469).

With that, Khoury was trying to say that governments were from the start only trying to divide both regions without thinking of the differences between them. The problem of dividing without understanding the importance of each place to both groups is that holy regions like Jerusalem, would be heavily contested (Black). In other words, it meant that it tension would be created, leading to war and the death of thousands. So, instead of trying to only divide people and expect them to be in peace, the governments of Israel and Palestine should create ties that will slowly get families back together, and that will at the same time, slowly end the hatred between each population.

In Conclusion:

At last, it is important to know how huge the Israeli-Palestinian conflict really is. It has been going for over 70 years and it has an uncounted number of deaths because is so hard to estimate. At the same time, we see multiple international governments have influence over the conflict, the main one being the United States. Therefore, that causes this conflict to be a world conflict that has affected millions of people worldwide. Multiple people end up involved in trying to find a solution to the problem. After studying multiple ways to mitigate the death tolls of the war, the two best solution were to educate the population, and for the government to create long lasting peace programs. Hopefully, in the future, we can see both countries growing, and not being at war anymore.

The Conflict between Israel and Palestine

Not many people know of the current issues regarding Israel and the roots of those conflicts. There’s been issues between Israel, Palestine, the Gaza Strip, and the West Back for more than the last century. The basic conflict between Israel and Palestine is they both lay claim to the same land. The compromise has been elusive. Israel has been the only Jewish state ever throughout the world. The Palestine are Arabs who are living on land that Israel controls. Israel wants its own state. The Palestines rejects Israel’s hegemony and wants to establish its own state as well. The conflict is over who would get what land as well as who will control it. This conflict has early historical roots. (Cite)

In the early 20th century, Israel sought to flee European persecution and to establish a homeland. Which was then part of Arab/Muslim majority territory. Several wars were fought over how this territory was to be divided. This goes to a couple notable wars that happened. Firstly, the 1948 war. Next, which is most important to remember is the 6 day war in 1967 that Israel won. This war is important in understanding the current conflict between Israel and Palestine. It left Israel having full control over the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Two territories with a large Arab population. (Cite)

The West Bank today is right now under Israel occupation. Israeli troops enforced Israel restrictions on Palestine effectively denying the land to the Palestinians. Also, the Gaza Strip is controlled by Hamas who are Palestinian-Islamic fundamentalist organization. (Cite)

The primary approach to solving issues has been to establish a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. Then Palestine would be given independence. The alternate route would be a one-state solution where the land becomes either Israeli or Palestinian. This approach didn’t get much significant traction though. Then there was the West Bank Settlement. It was a major impediment for peace. A huge number of Israelis lived in the West Bank settlement. The Israli’s claimed roots in connection to this land weakened Palestinian claims to that territory constraining boundaries of any future Palestine state. This pleases Israelis fundamentalists who want their West Bank explicitly incorporated as Israeli territory. These settlements and effective Israeli occupation make life difficult for Palestinians. The Gaza or the Gaza Strip as it is called is populated almost exclusively by Palestinians but is currently under Israel blockade. Israel used to occupy Gaza but no longer does. It’s also good to note that Gaza is neither a Palestinian state nor a Israel state. After 1967, Hamas and other Gaza base Palestinian extremists fired rockets at Israel targets. On the other hand, Israel blocks Gaza access to important supplies such as electricity, food, and medicine. The conflict continues. (Cite)

A separate but independent source of conflict between Israel and Palestine is Jerusalem. Now the capital of Israel which houses holy sites for both Israel and Palestine. How to split the city is a source of deep division. Trump has weighed in on the side of Israel. Trump’s policy of denominating Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and decision to transfer the US embassy to Jerusalem has been regarded by many as a significant impediment to the establishment of a mutually acceptable Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement. Evaluation of peace prospects between Israel and Palestine must take account the US and Israel relationship. Israel’s deep affiliation has several components including deep support for Israel in the American public and affinity with Israel’s democratic political structure. (Cite)

The Israeli-Palestinian peace process has been going on for decades and still has yet to be achieved. There has been ongoing American effort to make peace between the two populations. Currently Jared Kushner, the US president’s son in law and senior advisor, has been the principle actor on behalf of the US and brokering and enduring peace. The ultimate objective of the US mediation effort is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in Gaza and in the West Bank in exchange for Palestinians agreement to end attacks on Israeli targets. There are ongoing impediments to the process. They include Israel efforts to expand the West Bank in which Palestine construdes as an effort to quash the Palestinian state and Israel’s enduring antipathy towards Hamas. The current political climate militates against a peace agreement. Neither government trusts the other and the Trump administration has demonstrated what the Palestinians regard as a pronounced favoritism toward Israel. (Cite)

There are two approaches to a peaceful solution. There is the two-state solution and the one-state solution. The two-state solution, as the name implies, would create an independent Israel and an independent Palestine. This seems commonsensical. The Israelis wanted a Jewish state and the Palestinians wanted a Palestine state. (Cite)

The one-state solution would merge Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip into one big country. The risk of course is that our faction would dominate and visit human rights violations on the other. Polling suggests that a two-states solutions is preferred by both parties. Unfortunately, the inability of the parties to arrive at a two-states has created a fear that a one-state solution is inevitable. (Cite)

If it fails, it’s probable that a defacto single state will emerge. The reason is that apparent how separate Israel and Palestine states could be established without illegal structure to keep them distinct. The unfortunate outcome would be that either Israel ceases to exist as a Jewish state, or Palestinians become permanent 2nd class citizens. The Israelis are particularly threatened because the Arab population would ultimately be larger than the Jewish. And Israel might rise its status as a Jewish state. On the other hand, if Israel continues to dominate even if outnumbered, then Israel is no longer a true democracy. Unfortunately, the solution is not clear and a relatively peaceful coexistence is currently acceptable.

The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the world’s longest-running and controversial conflicts in the modern history. The heart of the conflict is that Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs both claim they are entitled to the land which lies “between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River” (Palestinians). The significance of the land is tied to the religions/Holy sites of Judaism and Islam. For the Jewish people, the land was promised to them by God. For the Palestinians Muslims, Jerusalem is the home of the third holiest sites in Islam and spiritually significant to the Palestinian Christians as well. Israeli and Palestinians/Arab nations have been fighting for more than six decades, with the ongoing Israeli occupation, violence, wars, death, intolerable living conditions, and failed peace negotiations only deepens the hatred for one another.

In 1920s and 1930s the Jewish population in Palestine grew, as Jews fled from Europe due to violence and anti-Semitism. At the same time, the followers of the "Zionism" movement encouraged Jews all around the world to move to Palestine and establish a Jewish homeland. The Palestinian/Arab leaders became alarmed by the rise of Jewish immigration into Palestine and wanted the Jews, and England, out of Arab territory. Growing violence in Palestine between Arabs and Jewish immigrants, caused the British to release a document called the “White Paper of 1939, which limited Jewish immigration to Palestine to 75,000 over five years--and none thereafter. It also prohibited future land sales to Jews, and promised Palestine independence within 10 years, presumably as an Arab-dominated state” (Understanding the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Two Peoples One Land). However, the Britain lost control of the land due to the increase violence and unsettling death toll of so many British lives in the land, they ended the Palestine mandate and turned the problem over to the United Nations to solve. Arab and Jewish forces in Palestine geared up and readied themselves to fight for the land once the British leave.

In 1947, the United Nations (UN) resolution was to partition Palestine into two states between Arabs and Jews, except Jerusalem was to become international city. However, the Arabs rejected the terms of the resolution “They were outraged that the Jews, who at the time comprised only a third of the Palestinian population and owned less than a tenth of the land, should be awarded more land (56.5 percent of the total) than them” (Palestinian Territories: History). On the other hand, Jews accepted the terms and a year later the state of Israel was born along came the birth of the Israeli and Palestinian conflict. Overnight, the Palestinians became stateless and the UN partition plan was never established for them. The establishment of the state resulted in more than “700,000” Palestinians fleeing or exiled from their home land and “creating the refugee crisis that still exists” (Understanding the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Two Peoples One Land). The following day Arab-Israeli War broke out between Jews and five Arab nations (Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and Lebanon) in the region. The Arab world called this war “The Catastrophe” the outcome left was in favor of the Israel, many Palestinians became refugees awaiting to return home, loss of life, and ultimately more land stolen.

Among this time, there were “1.3 million” Palestinian refugees scattered around the world, stateless, and no formal leadership (Carter 58). The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was established in 1964 as a political entity “committed to wage a battle to liberate the homeland of the Palestinian people” (Carter 5). But it wasn’t until 1968 when Yasir Arafat became Chairman of the organization and PLO gained strength. The Arab governments recognized PLO as the “sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, both at home [in Palestine] and in the Diaspora [in other nations]” (Carter 63). However, Israel did not recognize the organization and considered PLO to be a terrorist organization.

Between 1987 till 1993 the first Palestinian Intifada (uprising) erupts against Israeli occupation of West Bank and Gaza strip. Palestinian grew frustrated with their political and civil rights which were not being upheld by the occupation. In addition, Israel had total control of Palestinian territories which lead them to poverty, overcrowding, and unemployment. These dire living conditions of the Palestinians eventually lead to violence against Israeli occupation. As a result, the Israeli army were overly aggressive and were instructed to break the bones of Palestinian Protesters, predominantly youths. “Between 1987 and 1993, more than 1,200 people--the vast majority of them Palestinians--were killed” (Palestinian Territories: History). Many Palestinian lives were taken away, but the uprising was marked as a success. The Intifada grew worldwide attentions and sympathy for Palestinians and forced the Israel to begin negotiating peace talks with PLO.

The intifada ended in 1993 with the Oslo Agreement which were signed by Israeli Prime Minister Rabin and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) leader Yasir Arafat. The Oslo process was viewed as a fresh start for a new era in Palestinian-Israeli relations. At the time, it seemed as a historic turning point for the conflict as Rabin and Arafat shake hands. However, both sides disagreed over the occupation of Palestinian territory, rights of the Palestinian refugees, and the fate of Jerusalem. The Oslo didn’t lead to establishment of Palestinian state and eventually died down.

Later, in September 2000, second Intifada also known as “Al-Aqsa Intifada” broke out because the Palestinians became frustrated with the failure of the Oslo Peace Process and an intentionally provocative visit ignited the uprising once again. Israeli leader Ariel Sharon surrounded by hundreds of Israeli riot police visited the Islamic holy sites. During the visit, Sharon declared that “Dome of the “Rock” and “al-Aqsa Mosque” would remain under Israeli control (Carter149). Thus, began a renewed determination to fight for the freedom of all Palestinians. Both first and second Intifada movements were against dire living conditions of the Palestinians. However, the period of the second intifada differs from the first Intifada because it has been characterized by intense violence and deaths among the civilians. Former President Jimmy Carter writes, “From September 2000 until March 2006, 3,982 Palestinians and 1,084 Israelis were killed in the second intifada, and theses numbers include many children: 708 Palestinians and 123 Israelis (Carter 206). Unlike the previous Intifada, which ended at the signing of the Oslo Agreement, there is no clear ending date to the Al-Aqsa Intifada but “the period that followed saw an increase in violence, an expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and the construction of the wall separating Israeli and Palestinian villages” (Palestinians).

In June 2002, President George W. Bush announced a “two-state solution” for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict which calls for two states for two groups of people (Carter 157). The solution was to eventually lead to both Israeli and Palestinians to have their own independent states and creating long-term peace and security between both sides. However, Israel claimed the “two-state solution” wouldn’t solve the conflict but led to the destruction of Israel. That only deepened Palestinian frustrations and loss of hope. In the coming years, Israel’s true intentions regarding the solution was clearer with, confiscation of the Occupied Territories, destruction of Palestinian homes, and building of Jewish settlements, thus making the creation of a Palestinian state impossible. In efforts to claim Jerusalem and the West Bank, Israeli are increasing building of settlements to prevent the possibility of a two-state solution. According to Americans for Peace Now, “Since 2009, when Mr. Obama took office, the number of Israeli settlers in the West Bank has grown to around 400,000, a gain of more than 100,000, and the number of settlers in East Jerusalem has grown to roughly 208,000, from 193,000. During the same period, construction has begun on over 12,700 settlement units on the West Bank” (Israel and the Two-State Solution). The President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas who met with Trump's Middle East envoy, Jason Greenblatt, said "The Israeli government has since 2009 worked on wrecking the two-state solution by accelerating the tempo of settlements and the confiscation of land” (Raghavan). The Arab leaders want a renewed call for the establishment of Palestine.

The Israel-Palestine conflict is almost over 70 years old and roots traced back to the late 19th century. Unfortunately, peace for Israel would be impossible until Palestinians after decades of suffering were treated equal and deserve justice, equality, freedom, and peace in their own independent state. However, both sides cannot come to terms of the issues such as security, borders, rights of Palestinian refugees, settlements, and the status of Jerusalem. In spite of the collective efforts from around the world, a solution to the ongoing conflict has yet to be found.

Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Palestine was treated unfairly and is truly uppresed. They have been at war for many many years were Israel had the advantage and was helped more than Palestine. I would like to talk about this topic in depth from the beginning to modern time.

Even, before everything the Jews has started to settle in Palestine all the way back in 1820. Fast forward almost one hundred years, they have finally been recognized and gained land. Now, this land wasn’t given to them from the people who lived there, no no no. It was given to them by the British. In 1917, it officially became the Jews homeland because, the British approved their land with the signing of the Balfour Declaration. From then, there was no conflict for a while nothing too major. Up until the 1930s where there was a increase of Jews pouring in because of Hitler. With this, there was an increase in Zionism.

Zionism actually plays a big part in the conflict and how it started. “Zionists believe Judaism is a nationality as well as a religion, and that Jews deserve their own state in their ancestral homeland, Israel, in the same way the French people deserve France or the Chinese people should have China.” As the Jews have nowhere to go they, rushed to where the rests where and if you want to stay somewhere you get greedy and want to eventually claim it as your own. They basically found a way to stay and try to claim land which wasn’t theirs to begin with.

Moving on we jump to the year 1947, this is the year that everything really starts. The UN has voted to partition Palestine into a Jewish state, an Arab state, and a small international zone. The Arabs which obviously didn’t like this really didn’t have a say in this. But even at that the plan moved forward, and the British officially withdrew on May 14, 1948, and the Jewish National Council proclaimed the State of Israel. In another aspect you can think of it a America and Native Americans from this point on. With the Arabs getting oppressed from their own land they started to fight back. They started fighting as soon as the state was proclaimed Israel. As family watches one another's back the neighboring Arab countries attacked the for there brother state Palestine. But even with that they had remained victorious. With that on Jan. 7th 1949, Israel has increased its land by 50% taking western Galilee, a broad corridor through central Palestine to Jerusalem, and part of modern Jerusalem. With that there was a new border called the Green Line. The land already had people on it causing around 750,000 people to flee from their own homes. With this new refugee problem this will later cause more problems between the two. From then, there would be no wars for 7 years. But soon after they sought more land and got it through winning more wars.

The new Israeli government was admitted to the UN on May 11, 1949. The remaining areas of Palestine was divided between Jordan, which annexed the West Bank, and Egypt, which gained control of the Gaza Strip. Jordan sought to have control over the political future of Palestine. They even extended citizenship to the Palestinians in 1949. The next semi-major conflict with the neighboring countries came when Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal and barricaded Israeli shipping in 1956. Working with the French force, Israeli troops seized the Gaza Strip and drove through the east bank of the Suez Canal, but gave up under U.S. and UN pressure.

After this incident the next major war wouldn’t happen until about 10 years later. This war was simply called Arab-Israeli War of 1967. This war was one of the more major wars in this whole conflict. For 6 consecutive days Israel defeated Egypt, Syria, and Jordan and annexed the territories of East Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and all of the Sinai Peninsula, expanding its territory by 200%. With this it was realized that the aggression wouldn’t stop between the neighboring countries. But with this the beginning of negotiations start.The first one would be the “land of peace” formula. This was supposed to be “the establishment of a just and lasting peace.” But as we know today and from what i’ve been saying this won’t happen. But at the time it got the Israeli to have a temporary peace. This was in 1967 but it ended in 1969, a short 2 years. This war was a War of Attrition but ended a year later where neither came out on top.

With this the arabs wanted to talk to the Israeli about returning some land but that caused the fourth war between the countries to erupt. On this day in 1973, Egypt and Syria has made a surprise attack on the Israeli on the Jewish high holy day (Yom Kippur.) What arabs gained that day was later given back when a cease fire was put into place a few weeks later. With that finishing up the Israeli suffered heavy losses.

On November 9, 1977, Egypt’s president was finally willing to talk about reconciliation. They had extended the talk with Jordan. The agreement wouldn’t be finalized tell 1979, 2 years later. The egyptian president also signed the document with President Jimmy Carter. With that Israel has withdrew its troops from Sinai. It took 3 years for them to completely withdraw all their soldiers. A few months later the peace treaty was void when the israeli assaulted Lebanon.

Extrinsic Vs Intrinsic Theories of Motivation

Every organization has a main objective. Most profit-making organizations have one main objective, which is, to minimize costs and maximize profits. To achieve this objective, they hire employees to work hard in different roles, but all geared towards the achievement of the organizational objective. Employees, however, come in with their own personal objectives and goals. A good manager or leader should be able to match the two objectives, that is, the organizational objective to the employees’ objectives. Amongst other things, motivation is one of the ways to achieve goal congruence. A good leader will use different ways (extrinsic and intrinsic) to motivate employees towards achieving their objectives and the organizational objective.

Motivation is one of the forces that lead to performance. Motivation is defined as the desire to achieve a goal or a certain performance level, leading to goal-directed behavior. When we refer to someone as being motivated, we mean that the person is trying hard to accomplish a certain task. Motivation is clearly important if someone is to perform well; however, it is not enough. The ability or having the skills and knowledge required to perform the job is also important and is sometimes the key determinant of effectiveness. Finally, environmental factors such as having the resources, information, and support one needs to perform well are critical to determine performance. At different times, one of these three factors may be the key to high performance. For example, for an employee sweeping the floor, motivation may be the most important factor that determines performance. In contrast, even the most motivated individual would not be able to successfully design a house without the necessary talent involved in building quality homes. Being motivated is not the same as being a high performer and is not the sole reason why people perform well, but it is nevertheless a key influence over our performance level (Saylor, 2012).

Definition/differences

Intrinsic motivation is defined as the doing of an activity for its inherent satisfactions rather than for some separable consequence. When intrinsically motivated a person is moved to act for the fun or challenge entailed rather than because of external prods, pressures, or rewards. The phenomenon of intrinsic motivation was first acknowledged within experimental studies of animal behavior, where it was discovered that many organisms engage in exploratory, playful, and curiosity-driven behaviors even in the absence of reinforcement or reward (White, 1959).

Extrinsic motivation occurs when one is motivated to perform a behavior or engage in an activity to earn a reward or avoid punishment. In this case, one engages in a behavior not because he enjoys it or because he finds it satisfying, but to get something in return or avoid something unpleasant (Cherry, 2018).

The main difference between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation is that with extrinsic motivation, one is moved to act or perform by factors external to their person. These factors emanate from one’s desire to get something in return as a reward for good performance. Meanwhile with intrinsic motivation, one is moved to act or perform to avoid something negative in return as punishment for bad performance.
With extrinsic motivation, one is given something to motivate them to achieve a high performance. For example, money, benefits, promotion etcetera. With intrinsic motivation, one is motivated from within himself to do whatever they do very well at a high level. He enjoys what he is doing regardless of external factors.

Irrespective of whether one is motivated intrinsically or extrinsically, all behaviors are motivated by rewards. One moves to do something because he seeks to gain some satisfaction for achieving an objective. At some point in time, one’s desire for satisfaction may be based on the type of activity being carried out and on the other hand, it could be based on their psychological state of mind at that time.

Specifically, because operant theory (Skinner, 1953) maintained that all behaviors are motivated by rewards (that is, by separable consequence such as food or money), intrinsically motivated activities were said to be ones for which the reward was in the activity itself. Thus, researchers investigated what task characteristics make an activity interesting. In contrast, because learning theory (Hull, 1943) asserted that all behaviors are motivated by physiological drives (and their derivatives), intrinsically motivated activities were said to be ones that provided satisfaction of innate psychological needs.

Extrinsic rewards do not just involve bribery (although bribery can work). In some cases, people may never be internally motivated to complete a task, and extrinsic motivation can be used to get the job done. In fact, extrinsic rewards can promote interest in a task or skill a person did not previously have any interest in (Bernazzani, 2017).

Assessment

Intrinsic or extrinsic motivation? At a glance, it might seem like it is better to be intrinsically motivated than extrinsically motivated. After all, would it not be ideal if one did not need anyone or anything motivating oneself to accomplish tasks? But, alas, we do not live in such a motivation utopia, and being extrinsically motivated does not mean anything bad. Extrinsic motivation is just the nature of being a human being sometimes.
If one has a job, and must complete a project, one is probably extrinsically motivated by his manager's praise or a potential raise or commission, even if one enjoys the project while he is doing it. JNCO Leadership Enrichment Via Transformational Leadership

Abstract

Leadership development is a thorough topic and practice in organizations. However, it is an ongoing learning curve for all sectors from civilian corporations to military organizations. There are many levels and contributing factors to leadership. This paper will focus on Junior Enlisted Non-Commissioned Officers (JNCO’s) from the Army organization at a Battalion level of combative units. In addition, it will briefly address the effect and comparison of leadership theories: Transformational Leadership and Transactional Leadership prospectively in a high-stress organization demanding progressive, innovative and creativity within a traditional structure. We will concentrate on Transformational Leadership’s subunit, motivation, in accordance to Army culture by weighing: Intrinsic (IM) and Extrinsic motivation (EM) with emphasis of Intrinsic motivational development in enlisted personnel, JNCO’s ( >E-5). Decreased numbers in JNCO’s is examined for probable correlation of decreased level of career satisfaction from deficiency in leadership skill development.

I decided to delve into this topic because I am passionate about the military. I not only have been brought-up in the culture but have firsthand experience as a former Cadet, and now as a Spouse of a Master Sergeant of 19 years of active duty service. I have much admiration and respect for a distinct organization underrated by many. When civilians get a glimpse of the military it is typically through Hollywood movies or via media outlets. However, these depictions show those in higher ranking positions in the limelight doing grunt work, when realistically, it is lower ranking enlisted members who are the backbone of the Army. This research will examine the leadership influence of intrinsic motivation, but more importantly, how we can better develop foundation of individual leadership to team-level leadership of JNCO’s (>E-5) before they are in positions to influence the following generation of lower-enlisted future leaders.

The U.S. Army and organizations alike will face significant challenges over the next decades as it attempts to transform and adapt to new age followers and leaders. Creativity and innovation are prevalent in this fast-track learning and technology era. This research paper has stemmed from my acquired knowledge from my undergraduate studies in organizational leadership. This has prompt me to further delve into the importance of the application of IM in Transformational Leadership within the Army organization. Developing future leaders shared vision via motivation. This construct is imperative for future Army readiness (AR), decreased attrition rates and post-military career transitions. It is questioned whether EM is more beneficial than IM. Afterall, if were not paid for our careers, we would not bother. It is a necessity. However, if that was the main purpose why would anyone consider joining an organization for the mediocre pay in comparison to civilian jobs that requires same qualification with more pay? There an array of reasons why a person decides to join, but the most common is the desire to develop beyond what a civilian job can offer- discipline and 7 Army Values: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless-Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage. How can the Army ensure NCO’s consistently commit to this culture?

By leaders consistently practicing transformational leadership skills with subordinates. We will examine the theory of Transformational Leadership (TFL), its subunit Intrinsic Motivation (IM) from Emotional Intelligence, the underlying reasons this style of leadership is well suited during initial career development with lower enlisted to leaders in the Army, and the important role it can play in the development of individual and organizational growth. It then advances recommendations for choosing and developing leaders with the transformational leadership skills that will strengthen the Army readiness in following years. It is understood that there are many contributing factors and levels to organizational levels. Furthermore, the Army is a diverse organization and the type of leadership applied differentiates. The Army has always been viewed as an organization with a Traditional Structure. Traditional Structure is an adopted strategy organizing a chain of command, a top-down approach. This structure minimizes communication from lower ranking personnel with higher authorities. However, daily operational tasks with small elements of Soldiers, i.e., Battalion (300-800), Platoon (39), Sections- are led by Transactional Leadership.

Their pay depends on rank and time served. For instance, an E-4 pay with more than 2 but less than 3 years of service would be 2248.50 per month (source). There is an array of jobs performed at this rank. For purposes of this paper, I will focus on those in combative jobs. I believe considering the high-stress degree of work 24/7, it is more just to offer leadership development courses that can supplement their resume for easier career transition must they part from Army after first contract of 4-6 years.

In a fire squad there are 6 individuals tasked differently. One will ensure everyone is equipped with ammunition, another will be the key caller for casualties, and others will be attentive to possible ambushes and leadership commands via hand signals. Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Ultimately, the Leader is accountable making the best decisions for the interest of fulfilling the mission with minimal to zero casualties. For instance, when performing recon, this entails a 2 Soldiers to scout the area where the enemy resides while the rest of the squad stays back and pulls guard preventing ambush from all angles. There is no need to undercut subordinate’s motivation for personal growth in effort to strengthen their contributions towards the organization within an organization. External Reinforcement and Intrinsic Motivation

An educational theorist, Albert Bandura studied the Social Learning Theory which agrees with the Behaviorist theory, although Bandura’s theory consists of two more aspects. The two aspects Bandura includes are, behavior is learned through the process of observation and negotiating processes happen between responses and stimuli (Mcleod 2016). Intrinsic motivation corresponding with internal rewards is defined as behaviors that are compelled by those internal rewards (Cherry 2018). External reinforcement typically coincides with extrinsic motivation. External reinforcement is defined as a reinforcer or reward that is shown by parents or peers giving approval for an action that was well done (Mcleod 2016). The phenomenon of the overjustification effect is when a person is given an external reinforcement for an activity that is already internally rewarding, then the activity can become less intrinsically rewarding (Cherry 2018).

Autism Spectrum Disorder is defined by the American Psychological Association as a common neurological and developmental disorder characterized by deteriorations in social interactions, speech, and repeated behavioral patterns, activities and/or interests (Weiss et al. 2016). The three prominent behavioral symptoms of ASD are: repetitive, common behaviors, diminished social interactions, and broken communication (Weir 2012). In an education setting, reinforcement is fundamental and important in regards to the applied behavior analysis principles. Teachers that have students on ASD need to have strategies that will help their students succeed. The strategies teachers use are a behavior contract and a token economy. A behavior contract is an established written agreement that outlines in detail the expectations that the student and teacher need to carry out for the intervention plan. A token economy is a reward system that emphasizes positive behavior by rewarding the student with a token when they perform desired behavior (Unl.edu 2019). Reinforcement can be used for behavior management and it most effective in managing challenging behavior in children with ASD. Reinforcement can also be used to help children with autism learn new life skill behaviors and substitutes to repetitive behaviors (Positive reinforcement 2008).

Literature Review

Recent studies have indicated that external reinforcement can have an impact on children’s intrinsic motivation, specifically children with ASD. Annette Joosten, Anita Bundy, and Stewart Einfeld conducted a study that suggests that anxiety reducers can improve intrinsic motivation in children with autism (Joosten, A. et al. 2009). First, the researchers identified what stereotypic and repetitive behaviors looked like. The results showed that there was a moderate correlation between the Anxious Behavior Rating Scale and the Motivation Assessment Scale (Joosten, A. et al. 2009). Children with dual diagnoses showed results that anxiety is more of an intrinsic motivator that sensory. Joosten et al. helped in determining that researchers and educators need the ability to evaluate motivation in stereotypic and repeated behaviors showed by children with autism in order to create intervention programs that will lessen these behaviors (2009). The findings of this study suggest that research needs to be more focused on intervention methods designed to accommodate motivations instead of decreasing behaviors (Joosten, A. et al. 2009).

Another study by Jackie Dearden, Anne Emerson, Tom Lewis and Rebecca Papp studied a 10-year-old girl with ASD. Dearden et al. wanted to study the effects of MORE (Means, Opportunities, Reasons and Expectations) on improving communication and engagement in children with autism (Dearden, J. et al. 2017). Over a period of two years and four months, the participant was watched and Dearden et al. concluded that engaging behaviors, such as following adult directions and interactions with adults increased, and resistant behaviors, including hitting, and kicking adults, decreased (Dearden, J. et al. 2017). The MORE was chosen as the approach to study because it is meant to improve intrinsic motivation in working with adults as a support in their learning. Dearden et al. focused on the use of age appropriate language with the participant. The results show that children with autism have a steady increase in engaging behaviors corresponding with reducing non-engaging behaviors when exposed to improving intrinsic motivators (Dearden, J. et al. 2017). Dearden et al. shows that intrinsic motivation can increase engaging interactions, such as communication, between children with ASD and adults.

A research study administered by Justin Leaf, Stephanie Dale, Alyne Kassardjian, Kathleen Tsuji, Mitchell Taubman, John McEachin, and Ronald Leaf studied the different levels of reinforcement on children with autism. Leaf et al. used four different categories of positive reinforcement, feedback, toys, praise, and food (2014). The reinforcement tools were based on standard acquisition skill. Reinforcement can increase pro-social skills, such as academic and pre-academic tasks, language, and social skills (Leaf et al. 2014). One of the skills taught during this experiment was to teach each participant to label pictures in great detail. The results of Leaf et al. implies sensory reinforcement is more opposed to satiation when more than one reinforcer is given during a lesson (2014). Leaf et al. results indicated that a variety of reinforcement levels are productive in teaching participants diagnosed with autism thoughtful language skills (Leaf et al. 2014).

A recent study organized by Brittany Beaver, Sharon Reeve, Kenneth Reeve, and Ruth DeBar tested children with autism’s ability to self-reinforce. The participants were instructed to follow a schedule on an iPod touch and complete a daily living task, a leisure task, and a vocational task (Beaver et al. 2017). The instructor proximity faded over time until they were completely removed from the room to support independence during self-reinforcement. Beaver et al. results indicate high percentages of completed schedules and on-task behavior (2017). Throughout the self-reinforcement condition, instructor proximity faded overtime in fewer sessions than throughout the teacher-delivered condition. The final results of the Beaver et al. study indicate that self-reinforcement is as productive as teacher-delivered reinforcement (2017). However, the self-reinforcement task did not require an extra trainer in order to deliver the reward, which suggests that self-reinforcement is probably more appropriate for children with ASD than teacher-delivered reinforcement. Self-reinforcement is likely more suitable for people with autism because this type of reinforcement can eliminate the factor of public supervision (Beaver et al. 2017). Final results of Beaver et al. concluded that further research is required in order to determine strategies for skills and surroundings that are successful in advancing independence in the community (Beaver et al. 2017).

The studies conducted above explored children’s abilities to have intrinsic motivation and what effects external reinforcement would have on their motivation; all of the participants were on the autism spectrum. Joosten et al. concluded that in children with autism, anxiety is more of an intrinsic motivator than sensory motivators (2009). Dearden et al. resulted in the participants being more motivated in engaging behaviours (2017). Leaf et al. studied how different reinforcement tools would encourage more prosocial behaviors; the results showed that language skills were accumulated through the different types of reinforcement (2014). Beaver et al. concluded that self-reinforcement is a more efficient tool in individuals with autism than teacher reinforcement (2017).

Research Proposal

In this research, participants will be ages birth-11. The research will examine the effects external reinforcements on an already internally rewarding activity. This age range will allow the researcher to evaluate the effects in relation to Piaget’s stages of development. All participants need to have previously been diagnosed with autism. Participants will be randomly selected from the ASD population, in hopes of strengthening the experiment’s external validity, so that the findings can be applied to other children with autism. The participants will be separated into two groups, a control group and an experimental group. In the control group children will be observed in their natural habitat with internal reinforcement for their behaviors. In the experimental group, children will receive external rewards for already intrinsically motivating behaviors. The previously stated hypothesis will be tested with the independent variable being intrinsic motivation and the dependent variable being the type of reinforcement. Researchers will recruit student participants from local educational settings throughout the United States. Students will be recruited based on their diagnosis, demographic location, age, and gender. If the results show a significance with the treatment of external reinforcement on intrinsically motivating behaviors in children with ASD, then the control group will also be offered the same test.

Apparatus/measures

Once the children are separated into groups, the researchers will screen the children in the experimental group to notice what they already find intrinsically motivating, this will allow the researcher to know which activities to externally reinforce. The screening will take roughly 30 minutes, so as to not cause the child overexhaustion. During the screening, along with observation, the children will be required to take the Children’s Motivation Analysis Test (CMAT), which will manipulate curiosity and boredom. The CMAT is an objective and intricate instrument measuring many important and influential traits of motivation in young school children. The observation and CMAT will assist the researchers in determining which activities the participants are already intrinsically motivated by, therefore eliminating activities the researchers should not externally reward. Based on determined activities, participants will then be externally reinforced for previously intrinsically motivating behaviours.

The two group experiment study will follow an independent samples t-test design. Both groups will experience activities that are intrinsically motivating, but the control group will receive no external rewards, while the experimental group will receive rewards. Both groups of participants will take the CMAT prior to any other exposure to types of reinforcement. Once the experimental group has undergone testing, they will take the CMAT again to identify any changes in intrinsic motivation after having received external rewards for previously intrinsically motivating behaviours.

Procedures

Before the experiment takes place, all participants must undergo a screening that will determine their eligibility to partake in the study. Once the screening is complete, participants will be randomly split into the control group and experimental group. Both groups will have the same number of children that are of the same age, so as to generalize the results. When the groups have been identified, participants will then take the CMAT, which will help the researchers identify types of behaviours to test and reward. Every participant, in both groups, will participate in the determined behaviors. After about 30 minutes completing the said behavior, the experimental group will be externally rewarded for their participation and the control group will be internally rewarded. Afterwards, the participants will retake the CMAT to identify any differences in their scores of motivation. An independent samples t-test will be used to analyze any significant changes in intrinsic motivation after completing the study. After results have been finalized, parents and participants of both groups will be informed of the results, so that they can determine future plans in educational settings. This research study was approved by the IRB.

In order to live, the human body needs air to breathe, but sleep helps the body to function and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. In a lifetime humans spend about one-third of it sleeping. Being well rested can change how well the human body functions during the day. Sleep affects the brain and the ability to process memories, as well as determining physical and mental health. Sleep determines how successfully the human body functions throughout the day, although, many things can cause the body to have too much, or not nearly enough sleep.

Sleep helps the brain to recover from the previous day’s tasks, and sleep can determine physical and mental health. Sleeping becomes a crucial factor in order to be physically healthy. The human body suffers and feels fatigued easily when trying to perform daily activities without adequate sleep. While asleep, the brain works to store memories made throughout the day and prepares for the next. Receiving little sleep can trigger emotions, creating the feeling of being irritated more frequently. A lack of sleep can cause irreversible brain damage and even weaken the immune system. (Person)

Sleep provides the body with the rest it needs to perform activities during the day, but entirely possible to have too much sleep. “Roughly 15% of people with depression sleep too much. One sleeping disorder called narcolepsy, affect people’s wake and sleep cycles, therefore, make it harder for the brain to focus and for the body to perform at a higher level. Once diagnosed with narcolepsy, it will have a permanent impact on sleep. Narcolepsy does not have a cure or treatment but once diagnosed, symptoms should never worsen. Symptoms include EDS (Excessive Daytime Sleepiness), Cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hallucinations, fragmented sleep, insomnia, and automatic behaviors (sleep episodes). Not all of these symptoms will occur once diagnosed with narcolepsy. (National Institution of Neurological Disorders and Stroke)

Sleep deprivation can affect the body tremendously. It has been proven that people who are sleep deprived drive worse than people who are under the influence. Mood changes can occur rather quickly when sleep deprived creating the feeling of being irritated and creating problems. “Sleep deprivation can noticeably affect people’s performances, including the ability to think clearly, react quickly, and form memories. Sleep deprivation also affects mood, leading to irritability; problems with relationships, especially for children and teenagers; and depression.” (U.S Department of Health and Human Services) Teenagers who do not sleep as much as they should often struggle with anxiety. Diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and high blood pressure are health risks associated with sleep deprivation. Sleep paralysis can come as a negative side effect from taking some medications or certain sleeping disorders. Sleep paralysis occurs when people are awake, but the brain still stays in the resting phase. This freezes muscles from moving to construct the feeling of being paralyzed. Sleep paralysis restricts movement and chest pains and the feeling of being choked occurs. Staying calm and not panicking help to prevent the feeling of being choked. Hallucinations can occur when experiencing sleep paralysis because the brain still thinks the body is at rest. This condition does not have any treatment available or anything to prevent it. Do not go to the doctor after one or two episodes, but see a sleep specialist if sleep paralysis becomes a very common routine when waking up. (Bradford)
Dreams can also affect the quality of sleep. Dreams happen 4-6 times a night and can trigger any emotion. Dreams can also last anywhere from 5-20 minutes. Although dreams can be nice, sometimes they can disturb sleep. Nightmares disrupt sleep and mess up the sleep cycle. When experiencing a nightmare, frightening thoughts and images are common. After waking up from a nightmare, it can be hard to fall asleep again. (Nichols)

You always hear that you need at least 8 hours of sleep per night. With that being said, there is not a large percentage of humans that do. With all the distractions we have at night time, it is getting tougher to obtain a well rested state when you are trying to fall asleep. Lack of sleep for some people can hurt them, and others seem to be not even affected at all. Sleep is a main part of our lives. On average a human being throughout their lifetime sleeps a total of 24 years.

Depriving oneself of sleep is very impactful. A study that was done recently has compared patients with those who currently suffer from a sleeping disorder known as insomnia. Using MRI imaging for effects to the brain, it shows insomniacs have weakened connections in the thalamus. The thalamus is the section of the brain that controls your sleep and controls your conscience. A decent amount of participants that got fed up had MRI scans that showed damage on the brains in the white areas.The farthest points that are in this white matter of the thalamus are directly connected with the duration of participants’ insomnia. The more trouble among the connections in the thalamus, the worse the sleep deprivation and depression is for the individual. Getting the right amount of sleep that is recommended at night is very good for you. Once you get your good nights sleep you can awake and feel great the next day which jump starts your day. The effects in your body are the cause of this. Your brain plays a huge part while you are past out, it stays busy while you rest sorting and storing all the information it has taken in that day. This process is especially important for how we have long term memories because it helps create them. This is also a time for your hormones to act. Many different hormones are released during sleep, all of them with different purposes of course. Melatonin is a hormone released by the pineal gland. This helps control your patterns for sleep. Melatonin levels rise at night fall, making you feel tired. Once someone is actually sleeping, your pituitary gland releases growth hormone. This helps the body to grow and repair things like muscle fibers that have been damaged. This commonly occurs from one working out or just performing everyday activities. While sleeping, the system that controls your fight or flight response known as sympathetic nerve system gets a chance to relax. When in sleep debt, this system increases in the activity it is doing. This has been known to cause and increase in blood pressure. There is also a talk of decreased sleep duration and its connections with increased risk of heart disease. Levels of cortisol, which is known to be your stress hormone, decreases during the first few hours of sleep. Although this is the case, it begins to rise to its peak not too long after you wake up. This is the cause of you eventually feeling perky and ready to go. Upon waking up, cortisol starts up our appetite. It is weird how we throughout the day we have to use the bathroom so much, depending on the amount of fluids we intake. With the Anti-Diuretic Hormone (ADH) this actually helps our body hold that urine in. ADH is released by our brains while in the circadian rhythm. While we are asleep our body is hard at work fighting off things such as infections. The immune system lets off small proteins known as cytokines. Young ones who do not get the right amount of sleep have trouble paying attention at school. They might have ‘temper tantrums’ at both school and or home. Dr. Holland has said, “Sleep is important for emotional regulation. The brain needs enough ‘brainpower’ to be able to control those automatic, knee jerk, emotional reactions. Kids without enough sleep may have trouble with that and may tend to be more irritable.” Poor sleep overtime can affect a child’s memory and cause it to be less effective and make their ability to learn more challenging. Sleep-deprived children have slower reaction times so they become less alert and more easily distracted. For teenagers who are 16 or older this could potentially put them at high risk for accidents (Children’s Health). A study in the Journal of Adolescent Health claims only about 29 percent of students get 8 hours of sleep each night which is the recommended. The ones that stay up all night are one of the many causes for this being such a low percentage. Teenager and even ‘Pre-teens’ too often have irregular sleep patterns throughout their week.They normally stay up late and sleep in late on the weekends which is normal for them. This can affect their biological clocks and harm the quality of sleep they are getting night in and night out. (INews Network)

Even though aging happens to affect certain aspects of sleep which makes it more difficult, many seniors will say they feel good and ready to go when the day first starts. Biological changes make sleep tougher the older we get. For example, older adults can experience a certain shift in their circadian rhythm. This means that they become tired and more groggy in the afternoon and awake too early before noon. Certain medical problems and common sleep malfunctions can also cause insomnia. Gastrointestinal and respiratory problems can interrupt sleep. This is the case when after they eat a big meal of something normally unhealthy and their stomach cannot handle it. Sleep apnea is a condition where one repeatedly stops breathing during sleep but with brief intermissions. This is also a case that can cause restlessness. Many things can help this in senior citizens. They could stop taking naps during the day and putting the time of them more on schedule. Cutting out things like coffee or just cutting back on things with caffeine in them goes a long way(National Sleep Foundation).

We all know someone that doesn’t get that full amount of sleep at night. You always wonder how that person keeps up with everyone that does. Maybe we do not need a full 8 hours, maybe it is just a myth. In a recent study Daniel Kripke, a very popular researcher about sleep, claimed that “people who sleep between 6.5 hr. and 7.5 hr. a night, live the longest, are happier and most productive”(Buffer). Some scientists even believe that having 8 hours of sleep can cause more deaths than having fewer. A good way to test this is look at death rates matched with time of sleep. One study saw less than 6 hours of rest and more than 7 have death risks that are increased. The sleep that was associated with the least amount of death risk was recorded from 5 to 6 and a half hours. The average person believes 8 hours of sleep is the best, this is all they have known. In reality, we see this is a myth. These results are only time asleep not time just laying in bed trying to fall asleep. When people have the lesser amount of sleep they start to worry. This is when they start taking sleeping pills to try to help them out. Sleeping pills have increased health risks. These include depression, accidents, overdose, infections, and cancer. Causes from the oddly increasing risks of infections were found in a test among a large group. For this reason it was said to be proven. All of these causes the death at night time. What that means is the stopping of breathing. They can flat out stop the breathing or slow it to where death slowly creeps in. Patients who are prescribed to sleeping pills often said they do not even see the benefits. Many doctors tell you to take them even when they know it will not help. You take these pills which mean nothing, but your brain hears what they are for and goes off of that. So you are the one getting better sleep not the pills (Rogue).

When it comes to kids sleep is definitely an essential for their bodies and their minds. It is very key for their minds especially. Academic is directly related to sleep. His team did a poll on 75 children that attended school everyday in the age group of 7-11. These kids were given a device that looked like a wristwatch. This device was known as an actigraph. This watched their night time activity and evaluated number and quality if sleep. From their they averaged the data over a 5 day period and compared it to report cards the students were given. “We found that 14% of the variability we found in math was explained by sleep deficiency. It was 7% and 8% for English”, said Gruber (Time). However, college students give more of their time, effort, and patience to the courses they are taking. Lack of sleep can affect academic performance, longevity and mindset in a negative way. Forty-four percent of college students say to have only felt rested and refreshed during the morning for 3-5 days throughout a regular week they are in school. This is said to be from the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA). The benefits of sufficient sleep not only include the feeling of being well-rested, but sleep is also necessary for our nervous system to function properly. Deprived sleep has an extreme negative effect called loss of concentration. This can can lead to impaired memory and lacking of physical performance. Chronic sleep deprivation can also cause physiological condition such as mood swings and hallucinations (Hoag).

There can be many causes as to why we do not get the full amount of sleep in the first place. For most people today technology is the main reason. People think that watching television before they go to bed helps them fall asleep, but in reality it makes your quality of sleep worse. This takes your focus off of sleeping. The brightness and noise takes away from bedtime cues. These include, darkness, yawning, and exhaustion. Caffeine is a big part too. You should not eat or drink anything with caffeine it it or high amounts of sugar right before you lie down. This causes that sugar and energy to break down while you are trying to fall asleep. This takes away from your quality of sleep because you will be too energetic to sleep. Coffee and Doughnuts are saved for the morning, not at night. Staying in bed is a big thing too and also not good for you. If you are up and very alert while lying in bed, sleep experts suggest that you should hop out of bed and start a quiet activity that you do not need light for. Let your eyes rest still and do not strain them. Do this instead of lying in bed still where you can potentially fall back asleep and be late for work or school that day (Saavta).

Not everyone gets the ‘recommended’ amount of sleep. Scientists are still trying to figure out how much that actually is. No one still knows for sure how much is the most beneficial and what that actually does. With all the distractions throughout the day and night it makes it challenging for us to get a good night's sleep. All that I know is that however much someone gets, they normally can manage. Sleep deprivation is not good for anyone, but it is especially worse for children. It makes them suffer academically, mentally, physically and psychologically.

The Poem “My Last Duchess”

The Poem “My Last Duchess," is one of the best known of Robert Browning’s many dramatic monologues, and because it is a dramatic monologue, it may seem a bit difficult to understand at first. To develop deeply into this Monologue, readers must pay close attention to what is said, as well as to what is unsaid. This poem consists of multiple characters who center on a specific topic to make the story very authentic and attention-grabbing. The effectiveness from this piece comes into play when the author uses the dramatic dialogue to sustain the readers' suspense, which makes this poem all the more interesting.

To begin with, in this dramatic monologue, there are many characters who play important roles. The Duke, however, portrays in the biggest role and is the only speaker throughout the entire piece of writing. This means that while he is explaining his version of the events, all other opinions from the other characters are excluded. In the beginning of the poem, the painting of the Dukes former wife is introduced. Although it is never stated that the Duke murdered his wife, the dialogue of the poem insinuates it. The phrase, “That’s my last Duchess painted on the wall,/looking as if she were alive," leave readers with the suspicion that the Duchess is no longer alive. In lines (27-28), “The bough of cherries some officious fool/Broke in the orchard for her” it sounds as if other men continuously bought the Duchess gifts and the Duke started to become furious because he had implanted in his mind that men were memorized by her.

Then, reader's interpretations of the poem began to change when,they learn that the wife wasn’t so innocent: “All and each would draw for her alike the approving speech,/Or blush at least” (29-31). These thoughts accumulated the Duke until he finally decided to have her killed. From the readers' perspective, the Duke is revealed to be a man who is possessive, proud, selfish, and an individual who loves and enjoys art but he is also the most captivating element of the poem because objectively, it’s easy to identify the Duke as a monster, since he had the duchess murdered for fairly innocuous crimes. Yet, he is thrillingly appealing, both in his use of dialect and his welcoming approach. The Dukes actions and words showed that he liked to be the one who was in control. He was fluctuated with jealousy and although he never accused the Duchess of cheating, he insinuated it because he was under the impression that other men were impressed by her. He speaks about his late wife as if she were an object who existed only to please him and do as he commanded. The portrait of her only interested him because it only reveals how beautiful she was when she was alive and excludes the qualities within her that annoyed him.

In addition to the characters within this monologue, this poem is structured as a long speech, pretending to be a conversation. With a total of 56 lines, almost all of them are written in iambic pentameters. For instance, the phrase “Must never hope to reproduce the faint” (line 18), contains a beat that consists of 10 syllables that are both stressed and unstressed. Organized in rhyming couplets, the rhyme scheme is ‘AABBCC’. For example, the Duke chooses when the curtain that is covering his wife’s portrait is open or closed, saying “none puts by the curtain I have drawn for you, but I”. The rhyming of words ‘by’ and ‘I’ reflects his powerful control over his wife because even after her death, it’s his decision when it comes to who can look at her. Browning’s use of rhyme, and rhythm brings out the disgraceful personality of the Duke himself. The entire poem has a precisely controlled theatrical flair, from the revealing of the painting, to the way he slowly unravels details of the devastation, to him expecting that the listener in the room is paying attention to his story, and to when he transferred back to the issue of the upcoming marriage. The author uses repetition most common when the subject of marriage is brought to attention. From the title, the word “last” hints towards the theory that there are or were several others.

Furthermore, the language used in this piece of work is astonishing as it allows the poet to evoke strong emotions in the reader. The setting of the poem happens to be not only in a palace but in a private room, where the Duchess’s portrait is being held. The tone shows an excessive arrogance and power over others. The climax of the poem arrives when the Duke admits that he killed his wife. He killed her because he was jealous that she didn’t look at him or anything he had bought her as something special. She looked at him, the same way she looked at everyone else, and it filled him with anger. Some themes within this poem are pride and wealth because the Duke is seen an objectionable character to some readers and also seems to be displeasing and arrogant, but one of the main themes is the conflict that takes place between the Duke and the Duchess. Irony takes a major role in this poem when the talk of imperfections and failings of the Duchess surface. Readers discover that the young woman’s “flaws” were aspects like compassion, warm-heartedness, pleasure in simple gratifications, and consideration to those who served her. The monologue is concluded when the Duke points out the statue of Neptune who appears to be Taming a sea-horse. This explains how the Duke wants his next wife to be like a trained horse.

In conclusion, “My Last Duchess”, is a poem that engages conversation which was indeed, Robert Browning’s scheme all along. It creates many possible scenarios and contradictions. The Duke executing his scheming, lustful, lying wife, would make him look like a revengeful perpetrator but the Duke murdering his loving, kind-hearted wife that could do anything but please her attention-wanting husband would of course portray him as nothing less than a monster. This fantastic monologue persuades readers into picking which character they desire to be untrustworthy. The Duke, although wrongfully killing his wife, felt as if he were an outcast because he couldn’t get a special reaction out of his wife, especially after giving her such. Even at the end, it’s visible that he still loves her because he is left with nothing put the portrait of her, in which he keeps out of harms way.

Much Ado about Nothing Critical Review

Some will discredit the importance of a valuable, thought out, and auguring title. However, Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” provides all evidence needed to disprove these claims with its alluring use of symbolism in its name, which intertwines with the book in more ways than one.

In William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” miscommunication, confusion, trickery, and voyeurism run rampant as consistent motifs in the plot. This is not unintentional, however, as is illustrated in the play’s title. The word “nothing,” pronounced “noting” in Shakespeare's time, is speculated to exemplify the themes of the play of facades and double-facedness. “Noting,” in Shakespearean language, meant to deceitfully engage in eavesdropping, voyeurism, and other matters of the sort. This is displayed throughout the play with its importance in literal dialogue, with Don Pedro and Hero’s hornswoggling foolery, and with its metaphorical importance in the story.

The first use of “noting” in “Much Ado About Nothing” is its appearance in literal dialogue.

The curious application of this throughout the play shows the many complexities ingrained in Shakespeare’s creative work. The first use of the term in the text is quite literal. Claudio inquires if Benedick has observed Hero, to which Benedick responds “I noted her not; but I looked on her.” This shows an unvarnished execution of the term, not as an action or verb, but as a lexical exclamation on the behalf of Benedick seeing, not spying, the daughter of Signior Leonato. After this, it is seen used by Don Pedro and Balthasar in an almost satirical manner. Don Pedro requests Balthasar’s sincere transparency when singing of love. In response, Balthasar exclaims “Note this before my notes; There's not a note of mine that's worth the noting,” comically stating his lack of will to woo through music. As is illustrated here, the use of “noting” in literal dialogue in “Much Ado About Nothing” is littered throughout the story. From Claudio and Benedicks first embellished observance of Hero, to Don Pedro and Balthasar’s contentment.

Coincidentally, the second use of “noting” in the play includes Don Pedro as well. This use is, of course, in Don Pedro and Hero’s hornswoggling foolery. Don Pedro, impatient in all matters, hatches a scheme to have Beatrice and Benedick discover their clandestine love for each other. In doing such, Hero has Beatrice overhear, or note, Benedick confess his secret, but strong, love for her. Likewise, Don Pedro has Benedick eavesdrop on a conversation with Beatrice in which she states her undying love for him. This display of “noting” in the play is literal; the act of snooping, eavesdropping or surveying from afar. To act as a silent sleuth, an uninvited gumshoe, or an invisible investigator.

The third, and final, use of “noting” in the play is as a metaphorical object; a theme in the fable. The entire story revolves around characters knowing things that they should not and deceptively learning information from an outsiders view. Almost every deed taken by Don Pedro and Hero, while not literally an act of eavesdropping or tomfoolery, is reminiscent of “noting,” and portrays its values on a grander scale. While true information is gained by the characters doing this, some also cause much to do over a misunderstanding. Claudio and Don John wrongfully observe and prematurely note Hero’s faithfulness, or lack thereof, illustrating that misinformation is spread by misnoting as well.

Some will dismiss the importance of this concept in “Much Ado About Nothing,” saying that it is an unintentional addition, merely a coincidence, or that it is simply a side effect of Shakespeare's work, stemming from his unique and original print as a product of his individualistic writing style. The first of these claims, that it is merely a coincidence, does not hold well when you consider the sheer amount of accidental conformity that would be required to deem this true. Throughout the entirety of the book, “noting” is used in statements, actions, and story arcs; far too many times for it to simply be a coincidence. The second opposing statement presented here, suggesting that the use of the term “noting” is present only because of Shakespeare’s penned tongue, cannot be proven true either due to the fact that Shakespeare never used the term in any other of his works prior to, or following, “Much Ado About Nothing”. This shows that the dialogue was chosen specifically for the play’s text to illustrate the complexities of the characters and story arcs in a more tangible way.

In conclusion, “noting” in Shakespeare's “Much Ado About Nothing” is displayed throughout the play with literal dialogue, Don Pedro and Hero’s hornswoggling foolery, and it’s metaphorical importance in the story. This proves important because it is a crucial part of the story that elevates the themes, character relations, and comedy to a new level.

A Forever Favorite: Much Ado about Nothing

"I do much wonder that one man, seeing how much another man is a fool when he dedicates his behaviors to love, will, after he hath laughed at shallow follies in others, become the argument of his own scorn by falling in love" (Act 2 Scene 3, Benedick). Comedic statements and hints of romance is what makes this quote a sample of what the entire story as to offer. The 1993 film version directed by Kenneth Branaugh of Much Ado About Nothing is a timeless comedy for its ability to combine humor with serious subjects such as deceit, absolution, and of course love. Particularly for this film, stereotypical stock characters, false identification, and social issues are what makes this storyline a prominent comedy.

In Much Ado About Nothing, stereotyped stock characters are identified as traditional comedy. The character Hero is the exact model of a Virgo stock character. Virgo’s are beautiful virgins, but in this case she is acceptable of marriage. In the story Hero is a true virgin and is slandered and accused of not being pure. “They know that do accuse me; I know none: If I know more of any man alive…,” is said by Hero in Act 4 Scene 1 when proving her innocence of never sleeping with a man. The major conflict of the story branches from this because of her typical stock characters storyline.

Claudio is the normal Adulescen stock character. Adulescens are acceptable males/eligible bachelors who fall in love. Claudio is parallel to an adulescen concept. He is a handsome, young man who falls in instantly in love with Hero. Claudio is smooth with his words and expresses his love for Hero to Benedick in Act 1 Scene 1 saying, “In mine eye she is the sweetest lady that ever I looked on.” Without a character like Claudio, there would be no young romance plot. An Eirion stock character perfectly matches Beatrice. Eirons are intelligent, quick on their feet and good at teasing others. Beatrice acts exactly like this. In Act 1 Scene 1 Beatrice is talking about Bendick and says, “O Lord, he will hang upon him like a disease! He is sooner caught than the pestilence, and the taker runs presently mad.” She is playful with her words towards the character Benedick. Making fun of him is easy to her. Her personality is quite a flirt in the story and provides a sense of comedy through this. Without specific comedy character personalities, the storyline would be dry and have trouble adapting.

The use of mistaken identities and disguises adds to the plot twists of a classic comedy. An example of undercover wooing occurs at the masquerade party. Claudio asks the Prince to request for Hero’s hand in marriage for him as a favor. In Act 1 Scene 1 the Prince tells Claudio, “I know we shall have reveling tonight. I will assume thy part in some disguise and tell fair Hero I am Claudio.” It goes fairly well until Don John tries to make Claudio think the Prince is doing this for himself. When action occurs in a disguise, plans never come to fruition and this is a perfect instance. Another prominent case that is the basis of the whole story is the mistaken identity of Hero to Margaret. The nights leading up the the wedding, Don John stirs up trouble by making Claudio see falsely that Hero is an unloyal soon to be wife. Don Pedro speaks to Claudio and the Prince in Act 3 Scene 2 and says, “Think you of a worse title, and I will fit her to it. Wonder not till further warrant. Go but with me tonight, you shall see her chamber window entered, even the night before her wedding day.” The events are a serious addition to comedy. Those who like to see a traditional storyline are the ones that favor in a false identity drama. These scenes make a comedy a comedy because they provide the much needed suspense and action aside from the jokes.

Much Ado About Nothing takes social matters and puts them in a relaxed environment that makes it alright to tease at. Women are supposed to be regarded as quiet and modest, but Beatrice is fair from stereotypical. Beatrice is fiery and witty, which means she is also not afraid to speak her truth, especially towards Benedick. “Scratching could not make it worse an ’twere such a face as yours were,” is said by Beatrice in Act 1 Scene 1 to Benedick. Even when she is speaking to a male that is above her, she is not afraid to speak her raw feelings. She takes no regard of her duties of being a female in her society. Her character breaks the boundaries put in place for women showing her strength and independence. Another social theme is the satirizing of love and marriage. Benedick from the beginning of the film is in strict avoidance of marriage, almost like the plague. He comes out and says to everyone is Act 1 Scene 1 saying, “Because I will not do them the wrong to mistrust any, I will do myself the right to trust none. And the fine is, for the which I may go the finer, I will live a bachelor.”

It is comical how much Benedick opposes being tied down to someone until death. Though he puts on a guard, deep inside he really wants to share his life with someone, but will not admit it. The last social issue that is being mocked of or poked at is the purposeful and accidental misuse of language. Especially in Shakespeare’s era, education and intelligence were regarded as proper. It also identified your social status/class; wealthy had schooling and poor had none. Dogberry from the film is the perfect example of malapropism. Act 3 Scene 3, Dogberry says, “Adieu, be vigitant, I beseech you.” The misused word is vigilant and instead he says vigitant. Comedy does not have to follow standard language, therefore words add humor to what can be a serious topic. In a comedy setting, it is easier to make fun of issues that people either agree with or disagree with.

Although the standards of a comedy have been used for centuries, Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing is iconic. The play in any time period is literature itself. It has been read and seen by millions around the world. A viewpoint that has drastically changed from then to today is the importance of chastity. It was almost forbidden to be married to someone when you were not a virgin. Today our viewpoint has shifted. It is not as important and it is not regarded as taboo. There is not anybody who could not relate to these themes of the play. It will always be relevant, past or future.

Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra.

Don Quixote is a book written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Cervantes was a Spanish writer who is commonly referred to as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and one of the world's greatest authors. Not a lot is known about Cervantes’ youth but, it is assumed that Cervantes was born in Alcalá de Henares (a Castilian city about 22 miles north of Madrid) around the 29th of September, 1547. Miguel’s last name was not “Cervantes Saavedra” at birth. He adopted the "Saavedra" part as an adult. He was baptized in Alcalá de Henares on October 9, 1547 at the parish church of Santa María la Mayor. His father, Rodrigo de Cervantes, was a barber-surgeon from Córdoba, who set bones, performed blood-lettings, and attended to minor medical issues. His mother, Leonor de Cortinas, was a native of Arganda del Rey and the daughter of a nobleman, who lost all his money and had to sell Leonor into marriage in 1543. This led to a very awkward marriage between Leonor and Rodrigo. Because of this, Rodrigo had several affairs. Leonor died on October 19, 1593.

Cervantes spent much of his childhood moving from town to town with his family. Eventually, he enrolled in The Imperial School, a Jesuit school for boys in Madrid. According to court records from that era, his family was very poor. Cervantes had 6 siblings. His siblings were Andr©s, Andrea, Luisa, Rodrigo, Magdalena and Juan.

In 1569, Cervantes was exiled from Castile.From Castile, he moved to Rome where he found work as a chamber assistant for a cardinal. Later on, he enlisted as a soldier in a Spanish Navy infantry regiment. Cervantes continued his military service until 1575, when he was captured by Barbary pirates. After five years of captivity, his parents, along with the help of the Trinitarians, paid ransom for him to be released. After his run in with pirates, he worked as a purchasing agent for the Spanish Armada and later as a tax collector for the government. In 1597, discrepancies in some of his accounts landed him in the Crown Jail of Seville.

In 1605, Cervantes was in Valladolid when the immediate success of the first part of his Don Quixote, published in Madrid, signalled his return to the literary world. In 1607, he settled in Madrid, where he lived and worked until his death. During the last nine years of his life, Cervantes solidified his reputation as a writer, publishing Novelas ejemplares (Exemplary Novels) in 1613, Viaje del Parnaso (Journey to Parnassus) in 1614, and Ocho comedias y ocho entremeses and the second part of Don Quixote in 1615. His last work, Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda (The Travails of Persiles and Sigismunda), was published posthumously in 1617.

When Michael retired for the 2nd time in his career everyone thought it was because he had nothing else to accomplish in NBA career, but what if he was secretly suspended by the NBA for his gambling habits and the involvement in his father's death. Michael Jordan's retirement in 1993 was a crazy one with a lot of conspiracy theories around it but the reason Michael Jordan retired was that the NBA really suspended him for a year because of his gambling problems and his involvement in his dad’s death.

Michael Jordan had terrible gambling habits. He was frequently seen at bars and casinos rolling the dice late at night before a game. Michael Jordan was frequently seen at casinos gambling before important games. As a matter of fact, it's said that Michael Jordan got about 1 hour of sleep a night because he was always gambling.[Warond] On one weekend a convicted drug dealer was found in possession of a 57,000 dollar check signed by Michael Jordan himself[Smith]. At first, Michael Jordan said it was a business loan but later admitted that is was a check to pay back a weekends gambling loss[Smith]. In the NBA it's illegal to gamble that late at night and you can't bet on games, Michael Jordan did both. It's said that a reporter was walking thru the Chicago Bulls Clubhouse when he overheard Michael Jordan saying “ So the betting line for tonight's game is -7 right?”[Smith]. In any sport betting on games is illegal as a player, just look at Pete Rose, he got kicked out of baseball for betting on games and is not allowed to be put in Baseballs hall of fame even tho he is one of the best players to ever play baseball.

In 1993 Michael Jordan was linked to his father's death[Wiederer]. In 1993 Michael Jordan's father was killed[Wiederer]. Michael Jordan was quickly linked to his father's murder because one of his father's killers had a check signed by Michael Jordan[PeteM]. When MJ was interviewed it was the same story, it was a business loan but then later he admitted that this was another check because believe it or not Michael Jordan lost in gambling[PeteM]. Michael Jordan got off the Hook Clean but this made many people wonder, is their a darker side to Michael Jordan? A popular reason people believe Michael Jordan's father was killed was because Michael Jordan never paid back the full gambling payment. The NBA most definitely heard about this and Suspended him.

One Might argue that Michael Jordan just retired. If their gonna spend all that time secretly suspending him they might as well let the Whole world know because the NBA suspends players all the time during the season so what makes this any more important. However Michael Jordan was at the time the best player in the NBA, so the NBA thought that the NBA fans would get mad if they suspended him so they just made him retire because it would make sense, by now Michael Jordan had won 3 NBA championships and it was proven that Michael Jordan had thought about retirement. Therefore that is why the NBA made him retire.

Michael Jordan gambled a lot and he might of been involed in his fathers death. These are things that would’ve of got any NBA player suspended. When Michael Jordan retired everyone was shocked but did he secretly suspended for gambling and possible involment in his fathers death

Much Ado about Nothing by Shakespeare

Much Ado About Nothing is a play that was originally written by Shakespeare and was eventually turned into a hit movie in 1993 by Kenneth Branagh. It features two main characters that are shown deeply throughout the movie, Benedick and Beatrice. These two are shown from the beginning to have feelings for one another, and everyone can see that except themselves.

Branagh portrays both Benedick and Beatrice as uncapable of love, never to be married, and jokesters. Everyone sees Benedick as the witty player who makes a joke of everything, while Beatrice is seen as the lady who plays continuous jokes on those around her and is assumed to despise marriage. These two are seen connecting from the start of the play, and you can see them partake in a battle of wits, puns, and jokes. Not only are these two characters shown as the most interesting in the movie, Branagh also goes in depth in revealing the true desires and personalities of the characters, not just what they wear on the outside. Beatrice is actually very open to the idea of love no matter how much she ignores it and is just waiting for the right man. She is shown as a very independent woman who won’t dare to be controlled by a husband, yet when Hero tricks her and she overhears Benedick’s feelings, she lets all the vulnerabilities that come along side love in. The same can be said for Benedick. Branagh used Benedick as the character who undergoes a major emotional change in the movie, and its truly shown towards the end. Benedick is firstly portrayed as someone who creates jokes out of everything and talks about their feelings through puns. He refuses marriage to anyone, and everyone believes he will never change.

Instead, Branagh shows Benedick taking the side of Beatrice after she requests him to kill Claudio. Since Claudio and Benedick are best friends, this was a major emotional change in Benedick and truly shows the depth of his character and what’s hiding behind all those jokes. This relationship between Benedick and Beatrice is not only interesting to watch, it has been historic and has paved the way for multiple other romantic comedies to be birthed. Branagh portrayed these two with no detail left out, and anyone can see that they’re made for each other.

Merchant of Venice Analysis

In our world, it is very hard sometimes to be merciful. The choice to show mercy often comes from being in a position of power over somebody. It is a decision no one wants to make. You want to do what is right, but what is right may not be merciful. This is no different in “The Merchant of Venice”. This theme shows up multiple times, although subtly, throughout the play. Characters make that sometimes-difficult choice to be merciful, whether it’s out of the kindness of their heart, or out of desire for personal gain. However, every choice made has its own unpredictable outcome. Often, showing mercy may help one person, but it some cases it also may hurt another in the long run.

In the play, Shakespeare presents the theme of mercy in the first act. Antonio, feeling depressed because of his monetary issues, is offered an opportunity by Bassanio. Bassanio will approach Shylock, a Jewish Moneylender, on Antonio’s behalf and request a loan. A large sum of 3000 ducats so that Bassanio may win Portia’s favor and love, marry her, and repair Antonio’s debts. Bassanio attempts bargain with Shylock, who says, “Three thousand ducats for three months, and Antonio bound” (1.3.9-10). Shylock then says how Antonio is a good man, to which Bassanio agrees. This is a misinterpretation on Bassanio’s part, as Shylock really meant that Antonio is good for the money with his multiple ventures. This sets the tone of Shylock pursuing his own personal gain, knowing it will be paid back in full plus interest. However, once Antonio enters the room Shylock immediately says how he dislikes Antonio for being Christian, and lending money without interest. Which makes Shylocks interest-based lending difficult. The conversation progresses, and an agreement is reached. 

Antonio gets the loan and must pay it back on time or pay for it with a pound of his own flesh. Shylock uses his position of power and displays mercy by allowing this loan, thus helping the poor merchant. But in this case, its not out of kindness, it’s out of selfishness and personal gain. He’ll either get his money back or get Antonio’s life. This again backs up Shylocks selfish and relentless nature. The Duke then says to Shylock how he believes that all of this is just for show, and that he believes that shylock will only keep this going up until the last minute before showing mercy and wipe the debt clean. Shylock disagrees, making sure it is known that his intentions are the same and that he intends to pursue the pound of flesh.

Portia and Nerissa enter disguised as men, ready to aid in the trial. As thanks, Gratiano gives Portia the ring that she had given to Bassanio earlier and made him promise to never give to anybody. This angers Portia, and Nerissa tries the same with the ring she gave Gratiano and the same thing happens. Throughout the trail there is a lot of back and forth between the Duke and Shylock. The Duke is trying to understand Shylocks insistence on seeing the debt through, and Shylock is trying to explain that it simply doesn’t matter because he is lawfully entitled to it. Towards the end of the trial Shylock receives what he asks for and Portia enters posing as the sick doctor’s replacement, ready to carve out a pound of flesh off Antonio.

Right as Portia is about to make the cut she challenges the terms of the deal between Shylock and Antonio and winds up winning the case on the grounds that Shylock said nothing in this deal about spilling any of Antonio’s blood. Shylock then backpedals and asks for the original 3000 which he is then denied because of his persistence to have Antonio’s flesh. Shylock is beat and the duke declares that due to a law, Antonio is now entitled to half of Shylocks possessions. The Duke then offers Shylock a show of mercy, only giving him a fine instead of taking the remaining half of everything he owns. Antonio is then asked what show of mercy he may have for Shylock, to which he answers that he wants Shylock to convert to Christianity and draw up a will leaving the rest of his wealth to Jessica and Lorenzo in exchange for is own half to immediately go to Lorenzo and Jessica. Shylock is defeated at this point and agrees. Opting not to show Shylock any mercy, just as Shylock had done to him. In Humiria Aslam’s Journal, “Mercy: A Virtue of consciousness in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice” he points this out by saying, “This similarity in Antonio and Shylocks behavior, if studied in Jungian terms reveals that, the quality of mercy lacked in both. Therefore, both were unconscious of their conscious behavior, adhering to the persona they represent in their conscious mode.”
Lastly, after returning home to their wives, Bassanio and Gratiano are confronted over giving away their promised rings. Portia and Nerissa could’ve chosen to leave the both of them, but instead chose to show mercy on them and offer forgiveness so they could live happy lives together. Again, supporting the theme.

“The Merchant of Venice” doesn’t make the theme of mercy obvious and it is often left up to the readers interpretation of Shakespeare’s work to notice it. It is a subtle, yet completely crucial element in this story and really drives the point home in the end that Mercy may be given, but not always received in return. It also shows that greed has no place in mercy because then it is not genuine. Whether is was Shylocks greedy intentions for revenge and wealth, or The Dukes and Antonio’s desire to see Shylock converted and stripped of his wealth, this lesson is proven true.

Robert Brownings “My Last Duchess”

Published in 1842, “My Last Duchess” opens the reader to the mysterious story concerning the relations between sixteenth century’s Duke of Ferrara and his first wife, Lucrezia De’ Medici. (Guthrie.) Criticizing this literature under a feminine eye allows the audience to recognize the unjust treatment and high expectations of women. Robert Browning aims to portray the mistreatment and neglect of women during this period while also creating an image of an egotistical power-seeking male character.

Duke Alfonso II married his first wife, Lucrezia De’ Medici in the summer of 1558. She was beautiful and came from great wealth which were both qualifying attributes of a royal wife during this time. Not long into their marriage, Lucrezia fell ill with what was once thought to be tuberculosis, but it’s been rumored that she may have been poisoned. After her death during the spring of 1561, the Duke remarried to Barbara of Austria in 1565. Again, Barbara fell ill with similar symptoms that Lucrezia endured such as fever, weight loss, and nose bleeds before she passed away at the tender age of 33. (Patzer, 2014.) The similarity between deaths lead the public to believe that Duke Alfonso II was using these women to keep him company and once they were no longer serving him or making him happy, he needed to find means of disposing them, and divorce was not an attractive option for royalty.

It is apparent that the speaker of “My Last Duchess” is the Duke of Ferrara as Browning decides to make the introduction line simply, “Ferrara” (page 692, Browning). In the beginning of the poem where the Duke is proudly presenting the painting of Lucrezia De’ Medici, he seems to put her on a respected pedestal. In the second line he explains, “I call that piece a wonder, now: Fra Pandolf’s hands worked busily a day, and there she stands. Will’t please you sit and look at her?” (line 2-5, Browning). The narrator recognizes the painting as a wonder that was meticulously crafted and is pleased to show it off to his guest. While the Duke continues to speak of his deceased wife, he talks of her traveling eyes and how she found pleasure in all things, even when the Duke was not involved. He goes on to say, “She had a heart- how shall I say? Too soon made glad, too easily impressed, she liked whate’er she looked on, and her looks went everywhere.” (line 21-24, Browning). This is the first instant in the poem where the Duke’s tone begins to turn negative when speaking about Lucrezia, and where the speculation that he may have had her killed begins. Within the poem, the Duke is speaking to a representative of another nobleman whose daughter he is soon to marry. He goes on to give examples of what his first wife fawned over, almost as a warning to the guest of what will not be accepted of his next marriage. His tone grows aggressive and selfish when speaking of Lucrezia’s interactions with other men who brought her gifts. In line 32, the narrator says “Somehow- I know not how- as if she ranked my gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name with anybody’s gift.” (Browning), which confirms his narcissism. The Duke felt that Lucrezia was unappreciative of his choice to wed her, and that he deserved praise and appreciation for it. The constant emphasis of power that Browning gives to the Duke in turn, begin to diminish his authority.

In the text of “My Last Duchess” the reader perceives the speaker as a proud man with little sorrows in life. His relaxed flow between the dense subject of his wife’s death back to hosting the party downstairs display the shallowness of his character. The words that the Duke use to describe his departed wife make her out to be a dangerous seductress committing adultery, when she was simply a joyous human who found beauty in all things. This intimidates the Duke as she incites fear in him through infidelity explaining why he feels that he must take it upon himself to have her killed. By having his wife murdered followed directly by hiring a famous monk to paint a portrait of her, the Duke feels he now has ownership over Lucrezia. “That’s my last duchess” (line 1, Browning) he says, shows he feels possessive over her as he begins to objectify her. The way the speaker talks of the Duchess displays the unproportionate balance between the couple. He hides her painting behind a curtain so that finally, he is the only person allowed to enjoy her ‘company’. This curtain symbolizes the Duke’s strain for power, as he says, “since none puts by the curtain, I have drawn for you, but I” (line 9-10, Browning). During the sixteenth century, society rejected powerful women even when they were of royalty. This aids in explanation of Duke Alfonso II’s power-hungry character since Lucrezia challenged his comfortability. (Saminsky, 2010.)

Another example of the Dukes insensitivity towards the matter of his wife’s passing, is when him and the representative are returning to the party and the speaker points out the statue of Neptune saying, “Notice Neptune, though, taming a sea-horse, through a rarity” (line 54-55, Browning). The rapid topic change lowers the value and respect that the Duke holds for his wife’s portrait, as he is easily able to talk about another artwork shortly after. The Duke naturally speaks confidently as he directs his guest around and never lets him get a word in.

Both the time period of which this poem was based off along with when it was published, women were not allowed to be their own person or hold power. Women were expected to conform to their surroundings and especially to the men in their lives. Lucrezia De’ Medici came from riches and this may have aided in her demeanor and how it crippled Duke Alfonso II’s ego. The Duke of Ferrara was searching for a woman who praised him and pleased him only, to which he failed twice. Viewing Robert Browning’s poem under a feminine criticism concluded the maltreatment endured by the wife of the Duke of Ferrara.

“My Last Duchess” Characters and Plot Analysis

“My last Duchess” is one of the famous work form the England poet Robert Browning, the poem was published in 1842 and it present a real picture in the Victorian era which is a very representative work in ironies dramatic monologue. The poem sued a monologue of a Duke to telling people about the death with his last duchess. First, his talks about his duchess’s personality, He hate her gentle and polite behavior. Second, he is jealous that she is easily pleasing by strangers. Finally, through the duke monologue we can see his jealousy and control over DUCHESS, and his greed for power and interests. The symbolism that appears in this poem represents a different irony.

"The curtain" is the symbolism that refer to the power of the duke. It covers the portrait of the duchess, and the duke has the power to open and cover. This satirizes the duchess was the foil of the duke, and her portrait became his after death. One of the collectibles. And he introduced his collection to a servant to show his power and wealth.

Duke used “a nine-hundred-years-old name” to emphasize his family and his personal power and prestige. Even so, he still jealous of his wife’s good manners and the strange man’s dedication to her. Because he has no ability to monopolize his wife, and the wife did not show the reaction of receiving the gift because of his fame. Because her smile made him hate, in the monologue, he hinted that he killed his wife and let the smile stopped. The purpose of his statement was to make the servant who listened to him feel his majesty. Therefore, his greed for power is not only for his wife and servants, but even for others.

When he looked at his wife's portrait, he praised the painting for the first time. For him, the value of the artwork was higher than that of his wife. When the artist painted the portrait, he praised his wife as beautiful as art. For the duke, these were just flattering words. The wife’s smile and shame became evidence of his wife’s derailment. He did not cherish his wife’s good character. In the end, he used the collectible "Taming a sea-horse" to remind others that he is a person with fame and wealth, but also satirizes that duchess are obeyed by him. This also satirizes this unequal marriage between men and women, which is facilitated by the status of money, and also satirizes duchess as one of the accessories of duke.

To sum up, duke is like a mentally ill person. He uses the tone of the collectibles to talk about his dead wife. Others can't think of him as the murderer who killed his wife. However, the biggest irony in poetry is marriage. THE LAST DUCHESS in the title, "LAST" does not represent the final duchess, but represents his last wife, but he seems to deal with duchess very quickly and find the next lady to marry him to become the next duchess. It is possible that there have been many Duchess before she died. It seems that the author wants to satirize marriage and feminism in the Victorian era. Women in the early Victorian era did not receive any protection, and women had to rely on Husbands come to maintain their social status. In marriage, the husband’s place is the highest. They can still enjoy a debauched life after marriage, and women can only survive for the family and their loyalty to the husband. In this double standard society, finally, it has created a feminist movement and a transformation in literature.

Does the American Dream Effect Peoples View on Poverty?

This study was conducted by Deborah A. Abowitz a professor from Bucknell University. Social mobility throughout the United States is the focus of this study. The researchers take a deeper look into understanding what college students actually think. They want to know if the American Dream is still relevant in their lives. They begin to refer to the American Dream as an equivalent to having an achievement ideology. They look into the students who have an achievement ideology and how open-minded they are in the belief in the American class system. They discuss the topics such as if fairness in the class system, justifiable difference, education and its effects, and are connections important in one’s success. Throughout the beginning of the article, they discuss the differences in eras. Baby boomers versus millennials/Gen Y. Baby boomers grew up in a time where education was not as important when trying to find a career. In comparison to the generation now where the need for a minimum of a bachelor’s degree is crucial to one’s success. They also note the difference in beliefs of high school students in comparison to college students. Throughout high school the encouragement from your teachers to work hard is undeniable. Since this is the case it can create an achievement ideology to where if you work hard you are going to be successful. Contrary to high school students, college students are taught to critically think, and this is where they begin to understand that even if you work hard there is a possibility that you can still fall short.

In order to perform this study, the researchers used 154 undergrads that were 60% male and 40% female. In order to gauge student’s opinion on whether or not they believe in the American dream they used a five-point Likert scale system that consists of rating 8 different items. They have concluded that these students do in fact believe in the American Dream. In order to address whether or not students believe in the American class system as something that can be described as fair was then assessed through a correlational study. Through this correlation, they have seen relationships of achievement ideology and American dream with social mobility. Although they did not find anything that relates to the position of class you hold with your success rates. However, they did find significance in how your family can have an impact on your success. This study also looks at how your economic status can affect your views on poverty and the class system as well. Overall this study went in depth to find out what college students believe. However, the limitations of the study were issues with the sample as a whole. Not only was the size small but the demographics of the students were not generalizable. The researchers suggest broadening the sample size in ways such as studying multiple different colleges and different types of colleges. They also suggest doing not just undergrads but graduate students as well. Overall the study had important significance and was well conducted.

Millersville University School of Social Works Jennifer M Frank and Karen Rice look to see how they are able to use a characteristic such as social empathy in order to influence the attitudes on the poor. To begin they discuss the values of Americans. They note that Americans are highly concerned with themselves and their own success. Since this is the case with some Americans they typically lack important characteristics such as compassion towards the poor. They also discussed an important influence on today's society which is social media. They explain that if we use our social media platforms wisely they can have a positive impact on the attitudes towards the poor, but it also goes vice versa if used in a negative way. This study specifically looks into a group of social work undergrads and tests out a new course they have decided to implement into their university program of social work.

The course that they have developed is called "Perceptions on Poverty in America". Throughout the course, they discuss the structural issues that Americans face on a daily basis that prevent them from living a life above the poverty line. They attempt to gauge student's perspectives on poverty prior to the course to get a better understanding of how they already view poverty. Throughout the course, the goal is to get students to empathize and recognize the poor. They discuss real-life situations as well as watch movies that give a good glimpse of what poverty looks like. They have also integrated a game that gets students to really engage and critically think. They have students play monopoly but emulate the inequality in the United States through the game. They also require the students to do 20 hours of community service throughout the course. In order to run the study, they gave a pre and posttest to the 23 participating social work undergrads. They saw a shift in perception but overall there was no statistical significance within the study. With this study, the researchers recognize the limitations they faced. Such as the sample size was too small, and they also recognized that the course they implemented was too general and did not look at enough of the specifics that could have an effect.

The following study combines serval different researchers from a variety of different accredited school. This study takes into account the socio-economic status of college students. It takes a look at the difference between the high-SES students and the low-SES students, and how their college experiences differ. It discusses how there are many reasons why these two groups differ so much. They look into psychological barriers that low-SES students face on a daily basis. Not only psychological barriers, but they also look at how the structure of the universities can hinder or benefit college students experience depending on their economic status.

The research has connected both psychological barriers and university structures to contributing to the negative effects that the low-SES students face on a day to day basis. They also have provided three interventions that may be able to change those negative effects. They have found consistency with these interventions that they do help the low-SES students feel more comfortable, confident, and legit in a university setting. Although these interventions may have worked, this study has a few limitations that will need to be done for future research. They have suggested more research to be done on the university and its offerings to the students. They are aware the university may have more of an influence then their study has found. Lastly, they have suggested for future research to have more students, but also take a look into the students studied during their college years as well as post-college.

This is an example of how Boston College has conducted a study that looks at how views on poverty can be changed through community service learning. This study consists of students participating in their Pulse Program. This is a program where students go to it as a class, but also are required to do 10-12 hours of community service a week to wherever they are assigned too. This study looks at the views of poverty with their students prior to the program as well as after. They also discuss how certain demographics of a person have an impact on their views.

This study is a longer study following these students through a whole semester of college. Although this study was longer and pre and post surveys were given the sample sizes stayed very consistent throughout. This allowed them to get a better understanding of their study. The reason they were able to keep the sample size pretty consistent is the fact that taking the surveys pre and post was a part of the program. This study showed a change in attitudes of pulse participants particularly in the attitudes and views towards poverty. The views such as individualistic ideology and structural ideology. The pulse students began to understand the more structural view of poverty after the program was completed. They have also found main effects within the constant variables of the students. Such as gender, race, religion, etc. Although the researchers are aware of the possible limitations faced. They discuss how the groups being studied had very different sample sizes between experimental and control, because of this the stats could be affected. They also are aware that Boston College is catholic as well as very hard to get into. This limits their ability to give general findings because the average college student would not fall into the sample they have studied. Although their findings were significant, the study would be better conducted at a larger and more diverse school.

This article is written by Kenneth T. Wang, Antonio J. Castro, and Yu Li Cunningham, and is from the University of Missouri. It takes a look in depth on how certain personality traits and characteristics of a person have the ability to affect one's cultural sensitivity. They look at 239 white undergrads that are going to be future teachers. Within the 239 students, the sample consists of 204 women and 35 men. They specifically look at how perfectionism, individualism, and racial color-blindness have an effect on the cultural sensitivity of a person.

This study uses a variety of scales in order to assess each personality trait and characteristic of the person. They use six well-known scales in order to get an in-depth understanding they are looking for. They use the CDAI (Cultural Diversity Awareness inventory) scale, the ASP-R (Almost Perfect Scale-Revised) scale, INDCOL (The Individualism-Collectivism Scale, Co-BRAS (Color-Blind Racial Attitude) scale, and MCSDS (Marlowe and Crowne Social Desirability) scale. All these scales provide an in-depth look into how these characteristics of a person can affect one’s openness to cultural diversity. An overall result that they have found is that women are more prone to be aware of cultural diversity in comparison to men. Overall this study was strategically designed with many scales that provides significance, no significance, interactions, and main effects in order to get a better understanding. Although, within the study, they were aware of the limitations addressing that this was a cross-sectional design and could have been more helpful using an experimental design instead. Although the results they have found a reference that these ideologies do in fact have an effect on the sensitivity they do advise future studies to assess more on the individuals' cognitive mind.

“The Times they are A-Changin’” Poem Analysis

The 1960s, arguably one of the most culturally-fueled decades, marks many notable events in American history, including the civil rights movement, the counter culture movement, the anti-Vietnam war protests, the struggle against poverty, and the emerging gay rights movement (CITE). It was during this decade that Bob Dylan wrote “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” a poem full of magnitude and power (CITE). It is essential to keep this time period in mind to understand the context in which it was written. In this paper, each stanza of Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’” will be explicated to develop an overall interpretation of the work as a whole.

Upon reading the opening line “Come gather ’round people,” (Dylan line 1) one can already infer that Dylan wants everyone to listen carefully as he has some big news to announce. In other words, big things are about to happen. Then in the next several lines, he paints an image of an upcoming flood, which seems to symbolize the nature of destruction and restoration. Moreover, floods typically come on quickly, leaving little time to escape. But rather than suggesting an escape from the flood, Dylan seems to ask the reader to “admit” (Dylan line 3) and “accept” (Dylan line 5) that escape from the flood is not possible. Since there is no escape, “If your time to you/ Is worth savin’ / Then you better start swimmin’ / Or you’ll sink like a stone” (Dylan lines 7-10). Evidently, Dylan is proposing that a new reality is coming, and instead of running from it, conform and embrace it (Dylan lines 1-11).

Furthermore, stanza two is directing a message at writers and critics (Dylan lines 12-22). Dylan seems to be targeting the media by insinuating that their predictions are wrong most of the time; thus, he warns to “keep your eyes wide” (Dylan line 14) to get reality correct this time around. The remaining lines in verse two advise not to “speak too soon,” (Dylan line 16) implying that change can navigate in any direction. ‘’For the loser now / Will be later to win” (Dylan lines 20-21) adds to the notion that not only can change navigate in any direction, but is often unexpected and opposite of predictions.
Stanzas three and four follow the same theme in which change, be it good or bad, is inevitably approaching, but directs the message again at a different audience. Verse three calls out political figures, while verse four is directed at parents of a new generation (Dylan lines 23-44). In lines 24-26, Dylan urges politicians to “Please heed the call” and “Don’t stand in the doorway / Don’t block up the hall.” Considering the events taking place during this time in history, it makes sense to assume that Dylan is threatening politicians to not obstruct legislation that grants these civil and economic rights, as he feels they most likely will oppose the change that comes with these movements. Should they oppose the coming change, “It’ll soon rattle your walls” (Dylan line 32).

Dylan’s message to mothers and fathers in the fourth stanza is to refrain from condemning “What you can’t understand” (Dylan line 37). Parents are the target here because they are the older generation that opposes the new social movement of change, especially during the sixties when society was much more critical of straying from the norm. In addition, Dylan suggests to “Please get out of the new one / If you can’t lend your hand” (Dylan lines 42-43). Again, Dylan reiterates that change is inevitable, so those that reject acceptance and conformity need to step aside (Dylan lines 34-44).

The final stanza once again sums it all up. There is no turning back now: “The line it is drawn / The curse it is cast” (Dylan lines 45-46). “As the present now / Will later be past” (Dylan lines 49-50) implies that this new order will soon be forgotten and past, once the new era of change is born. Nevertheless, regardless of how people feel, world changing events will take place anyway (Dylan lines 45-55).

In regard to Dylan’s overall message in “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” it seems quite evident that change, despite how some may feel about it, is rapidly approaching and there is nothing anyone can do to stop or escape it. Yet, those who try to stop it are held responsible for their obstruction (Dylan lines 1-55). What is not clear in his message, however, is what this change will bring exactly. He indicates that the times will change and that those who do not accommodate and accept it will drown and perish, but there is no indication of what this new order comprises, nor whether the upcoming change is good.

Introduction

Mother's have been breastfeeding their babies since the 15th century. What is wrong with feeding a baby? There is nothing wrong with feeding a baby. When a baby has breast milk, it is healthier for the baby. Breast milk is more robust for a baby because they will have fewer illnesses, fewer gastrointestinal illnesses, fewer allergies, asthma, and ear infections. Breast milk is also more natural for the baby to digest. Breast milk is more natural, and it helps protect the baby's immune system. When a mother breastfeeds, she isn't putting chemicals into the baby. The mother is also more aware of what she is consuming, so she can keep her baby healthy. It also creates a closer bond when the mother breastfeeds her baby. "Babies need to feed frequently; human milk is low in fat and similar in content to other mammals who feed their young at intervals. Therefore, mothers with children breastfeed as they go about their daily activities" (Lisa Amir, 2014, pg 1). This sounds simple. Instead, breasts are seen as a sexual thing, that so many people are offended by the sight of a woman feeding her child. They see it as somehow sexual and thus inappropriate to do in public.

"Many cultures consider the female breast primarily as a sexual organ, and therefore a private part of the body, which needs to be invisible in the public arena" (Amir, 2014, pg, 2). People see breastfeeding as inappropriate because it reminds some people what the purpose of what breasts are. When people see a woman showing her breast in a bikini or a low cut shirt, the reaction is wow nice or what a slut. When a baby is attached, it is used as sexualizing the act. Like the breasts are intended for foreplay and babies don't fit into that picture. This is why some people will shame the women for their guilty misconceptions. What some people don't realize is that breasts are meant to breastfeed babies. You see people sexualize breasts for many things on TV, posters, advertisements, and jobs. So, people assume because they're used for all of that it's inappropriate when feeding a child when it's not inappropriate. Breastfeeding in the workplace vs. in public is very different. Most mothers feel more comfortable breastfeeding in the workplace than in society. Mothers are more comfortable breastfeeding in the workplace because they can breastfeed in a private area. In public, when a mother breastfeeds, she isn't always able to breastfeed in a secluded area. When she is breastfeeding in general, there also might be individuals who are either supportive or have something negative to say about it. In the workplace when the mother is breastfeeding or pumping, she knows who her coworkers are, and she knows that her coworkers won't judge her while she is breastfeeding. Breastfeeding in public and the workplace is a very controversial topic.

In a study done by Ingrid Johnston-Robledo, Stephanie Wares, Jessica Fricker and Leigh Pasek there were two hundred and seventy-five female undergraduates who completed a survey. In the survey the women were asked questions such as what their attitudes of breastfeeding were, and any concerns that they might have of breastfeeding. (Johnston-Robledo et al., , 2007). In the article the authors mention objectification theory. Objectification theory states “in a culture that objectifies a sexually mature women’s body, women are socialized to view and evaluate their bodies from the perspective of an outside world” (Johnston-Robledo et al., 2007, pg. 430). When some women are seen like this they might start to have anxiety or have depression. In the study that the authors did they had the participants indicate whether the women were going to breastfeed, formula feed. They were also asked how long they planned to breastfeed. The participants rated eight items using a likert scale that ranged from 1-7. An example of something that they rated was a picture of a woman breastfeeding. The results of the study found that 51% of the women planned to formula feed and breastfeed, 29% were going to breastfeed exclusively, 11% weren’t sure and 9% were going to formula feed. (Johnston-Robledo et al., , 2007).

The women who planned to breastfeed were going to breastfeed for at least 8.4 months, while those who were planning to breastfeed and bottle feed were going to for at least 5.5 months. The findings from the study were the women who had a more positive attitude toward breastfeeding weren’t as worried that breastfeeding would be embarrassing. As for the women who had a higher score, they viewed breastfeeding negatively. In another study that was done by Michele Acker, 106 students participated. Of the 106 who participated in the study, 33 were males and 72 were females. The ages ranged from 18-72 years old. “Participants were told that the purpose of the study was to investigate how dress and behavior influenced perceptions of people; however, the study actually explored reactions to a woman breastfeeding in either a public or private setting” (Acker, 2009, pg. 481). The participants who were shown a picture of a mother breastfeeding in private, the mother breastfed in her own home. Whereas the participants who were shown a picture of a woman breastfeeding in public, the woman was breastfeeding in coffee shop. (Acker, 2009). Once the participants saw each picture of the person, they were asked 6 questions. The questions were split into three different parts which were positive evaluations, negative feelings, and normalcy. The results from this study showed that older participants and males offered more support toward a breastfeeding woman. The older participants also saw breastfeeding as normal compared to the younger participants. (Acker, 2009).

In an article by Emma Brown that was in the Washington post a mother who is a school teacher was returning from summer break. The school was simply two weeks into the new school "All Anna Johnson-Smith wanted was some time each afternoon to pump breast milk for her infant" (Emma Brown, 2015, pg. 1). The principal of the school denied the kindergarten teacher's request which resulted in her having to choose between her baby or her job. She decided to quit her job. Some challenges that working mothers face are a private place to pump at work. Legally, your workplace should have a place for you to pump, that's not a bathroom or closet, and a separate fridge for you to store your milk. This usually doesn't happen much. "While pumping at work is a hassle for many women for teachers, it can feel nearly impossible. Privacy is scant in a school building full of children, and classroom schedules are busy and inflexible" (Emma Brown, 2015, pg. 2).

The same article also mentioned that some teachers would help out their coworkers and cover their classroom so the mother can pump or breastfeed. Sometimes teachers have to use their lunchtime so they can pump or breastfeed and hope that they don't get disrupted. Some employers are not supportive of women breastfeeding in the workplace like the one mentioned in this article. In the article, the author also mentioned that a high school teacher in Miami pumped while students were working on some schoolwork. Sometimes if your employer won't let you pump or breastfeed at work, you have to work around those issues. Pumping is a huge hassle if you are away from your baby. You have to arrange it with your employer to fit a schedule like a feeding schedule in, and then they have to provide you with a room for you to pump in. Most employers don't have a space set aside for a breastfeeding mother to pump or even breastfeed, so that can become a hassle. The mother in this article wanted just 15 minutes during the day to pump at work, but instead, the principal made her choose between the job or her child. "Although breastfeeding mothers do not need a large space to pump milk, they do need a private space with a locking door and access to a sink with clean, running water. This may be a dedicated room or an office" (Mills, 2009, pg. 229).

The room that the mother pumps it should have a comfy chair that she can sit in. It should also have a power outlet so that the mother can plug in the pump. There are many pros and cons to breastfeeding in the workplace. A few cons to breastfeeding in the workplace are that mothers may not have a private place to breastfeed their baby. The environment that the mother is breastfeeding it may not be supportive. Another con is the employer may not provide a fridge for the mother for her to store the milk if she decides to pump, while she is at work. It can also be stressful because you have to make sure you get time to breastfeed or pump. Mother's may not get the time to breastfeed, while they are at work if they do it may not be at once every day. There are many pros in breastfeeding in the workplace. One advantage is that breastfeeding promotes bonding. When a mother breastfeeds at work, it helps her maintain her milk supply. Another advantage that the mother has when she breastfeeds in the workplace is that she becomes more confidence in herself. Depending on where the mother works, her coworkers will be supportive of her breastfeeding. If a woman is working in a hospital setting, her coworkers will most likely be supportive of the mother breastfeeding. Another pro, the mother is more productive at work because she doesn’t have to worry about the baby.

Some people feel uncomfortable when women breastfeed in public. Some breastfeeding mothers even feel awkward breastfeeding in society because of reactions that they might get from the audience. In one article by Candace Mulready-Ward and Martine Hackett titled "Perception and Attitudes: Breastfeeding in Public in New York City." In the article, some women stopped breastfeeding because they had difficulties breastfeeding or their baby was not gaining enough weight. In the same article the authors found that residents of New York City were having trouble deciding between if breastfeeding should be done in private or public (Mulready-Ward & Hackett, 2014). Many, didn't have a problem when a mother did breastfeed around them (Mulready-Ward & Hackett, 2014). Some people are comfortable breastfeeding in public. Other people have different opinions about breastfeeding in public. Even if a mother feels comfortable breastfeeding in public, they might need a private area where they can breastfeed their baby. Some people use breastfeeding covers, but some mothers don't like or believe that a breastfeeding cover is needed. Mothers who are breastfeeding need a more quiet and private place for the baby to nurse. The baby can get distracted easily, so which can make it difficult if the mother is breastfeeding in public. In the article titled "Breastfeeding in public: "You can do it?" by Lisa Amir discussed how some women have "anxiety about breastfeeding" (Amir, 2014, pg 2.). The anxiety that the mother has reduces the amount of time that she will breastfeed. For some women, they are worried that someone will challenge their right to feed their baby.

They want a peaceful, tranquil bonding experience while they feed. If someone says something rude, the mother will become stressed, and the baby will feel that tension. That not only creates stress for the mother but creates a subconscious negative experience for the baby. Some mothers' felt more comfortable breastfeeding in a park because they can be in a group situation rather than being in a park and being alone (Amir, 2014, pg 2). The mother will use the blanket to cover up her baby while she breastfeeds. In another article that is titled "Public Beliefs about breastfeeding Policies in Various Settings," the authors found that some mothers wanted some privacy while they breastfeed in public. The authors in this article also mentioned "Establishing lactation rooms in shopping malls or public buildings could help reduce some of the barriers to breastfeeding in public places" (Li, R., Hsia, J., Fridinger, F., Hussain, A., Benton-Davis, S., & Grummer-Strawn, L. , 2004, pg. 1163). In another article by Jessica Sillers, she mentioned that at first, a mother might be uncomfortable breastfeeding in public. She gave some advice on how to feel comfortable breastfeeding in society. Some strategies that she suggested were: practice in your own home, surround yourself with other mothers who are also nursing and go to an environment that is baby friendly. She also advised what to do if someone is unsupportive.

The advice that she gave if someone is unsupportive would be to ignore them and walk away, find someone who can support you when it comes to breastfeeding. As breastfeeding in the workplace has its pros/cons. Breastfeeding in public has pros and cons. Some drawbacks to breastfeeding in public consist of people not being supportive. They might tell the mother to move to a different area, or that person might look away when the mother is breastfeeding her baby. While the mother is breastfeeding, the baby might get distracted by other things or people around them. We can't stop someone from being rude to the mother who is breastfeeding, but if they are unkind, then the mother can get up and walk or that person can as well. Another con to breastfeeding in public is people might stop and stare, and if they do smile and don't say anything. A few pros to breastfeeding in public are it doesn't cost any money. The mother can breastfeed anytime and anywhere when she is in society. The baby doesn't have to wait to eat. Another pro is not needing to hook anything up to an outlet and not having to prepare anything.
If people are unsupportive of a mother breastfeeding in public, we should educate them on why it is essential. You can also align yourself with breastfeeding women. If someone is rude, move between them and the mother. Offer a nod or a smile. Be assertive, polite and kind to folks who are uncomfortable. The bottom line is, we have a legal right, in all 50 states to breastfeed wherever and whenever that baby needs to feed. You wouldn't tell a mother who is bottle feeding their baby to stop, then don't say to a breastfeeding mom to stop feeding their baby in public. In California, there are many breastfeeding laws. If a mother who is pumping or breasting and is a working mother, she should talk to her supervisor. A breastfeeding mother shouldn't be shy to speak to their employer, because most likely they will want to meet her needs.

An employer can be clear about supporting a mother who wishes to breastfeed by clearly, including it in their employee handbook. The employer can also provide the mother with a place for her to pump during business hours. The mother who is breastfeeding can talk with other mom's. Professionals can also give mother's resources on where they can go to get support if they need any help or have questions to breastfeeding. If a new mother does not get the support that she requires of breastfeeding she may stop breastfeeding altogether. Professionals should also support all moms, regardless of how they feed their babies. The professional should be honest with the mother. Breastfeeding can be hard and often doesn't come "naturally." Fathers should be included in discussions of what breastfeeding entails, and how they can support their partner in breastfeeding. Professionals can also advocate for breastfeeding moms, including educating the community at large of the benefits to breastfeeding, and of the right that breastfeeding moms have. They can also create comfortable and supportive environments that offer moms the opportunity to connect, such as going to first 5 playgroups, child care programs which include family child care homes. Professionals can also work with caregivers in supporting the families who are in their programs. Professionals should not push mothers to use formula so quickly; they should spend more time with the mother at the hospital encouraging her to breastfeed. Professionals should also offer more at home appointments, and offer more classes that teach the mother how to breastfeed, while she is pregnant.

I believe that a mother should feel safe and be able to breastfeed her child in public without feeling offended. Babies need food too, just as much as adults. If you think about breastfeeding from a male's perspective breasts are sexualized, so they don't want to see them as anything else. I don't think that a breastfeeding mother should have to go to a different area to breastfeed her child. If someone isn't comfortable with the mother breastfeeding their child, then they can move away from the mom. A few years ago, I ran into a young woman sitting on a milk crate in a filthy room. The room was in a building, and it had a restaurant and a McDonald's. There was a men's and women's bathroom in the basement. This was meant to be the bathroom for both business employees. The women's, bathroom was located under the dishwashing room for the restaurant. I realized that she was sitting there pumping. I didn't want to embarrass her. I wanted to encourage her to breastfeed because my mom breastfed my brother and me and I knew that it was important. I told her to hang in there, and she was doing the best thing feeding her baby with mother's milk. She nodded but didn't seem to want to talk. I expressed my sadness to her because she had to pump in gross surroundings. She didn't want her coworkers to know what she was doing though. I said to her, so are you trying to hide out here? She said, since the bathroom is filthy, her women coworkers don't use it. I told her that she shouldn't be embarrassed. She teared up and said; she wished there was elsewhere she could go. I wanted to find somewhere for her. It made me sad to think that every day she was sitting in a filthy basement bathroom every day pumping milk for her baby. I'm sure; she was giving up her lunch to do this as well. All while making a minimum wage and treated like a robot.

The young mother stuck it out for four months. She told me where she worked, and I told her to ask the restaurant waitresses if she could use their locker room. Still, in the basement, but maybe cleaner. The restaurant found out and nixed that idea. The young mother, unfortunately, gave up and stopped pumping. I hope she was at least able to keep breastfeeding at home. Even, if her employer didn't provide a decent place to pump, what if there were a place she could go to? Clean, private, with a chair and outlet. It wouldn't take much. Not everyone is privileged enough to have a private office, or personal space to pump in. Low income, mothers are least likely to breastfeed, even though it's free. How can we encourage a mother to breastfeed in public? We can't force a mother to breastfeed in general, but if she wants to breastfeed, we shouldn't discourage it. I believe I believe that it is the mother's choice. If a mother wants to breastfeed in public, we shouldn't stop them from doing it. I don't think the public should tell a breastfeeding mother to move into a different area. If someone doesn't want to see a mother breastfeeding in general, then they can move to a separate area. Babies need to eat just as much as adults. More colleges and even public places should have a private place where a mother can breastfeed her baby. We need to do more so that mothers' feel comfortable breastfeeding in public. Before new parents leave the hospital, they should be able to get any questions answered that they may have about breastfeeding. Many mothers stop breastfeeding if they don't have the support. Sometimes a mother might not breastfeed her first child because she had difficulties with the baby latching, but after she might decide to try again and breast her second child.

Conclusion

This topic is very controversial. We can't make a decision for a mother to breastfeed in the workplace or in public. If a mother wants to breastfeed in public, we should let her. We can't deny baby food if they are hungry. If someone is going to be rude to the mother, that person should move away from her. Everyone is not going to be supportive when a mother breastfeeds, especially in public but all we can really do is tell them that it’s not up to them. It's up to the mother. It is essential to take into consideration the pros and cons of breastfeeding in public and the workplace, but in the end, it's up to the mother as to what she wants to do because it is her body.

Don Quixote Character Analysis

The legendary character of Don Quixote is revered for his strong convictions and dedication to love, nobility, and courage in a world that does not fully embrace those ideals. He is revered for his unapologetic worldview and strong commitment to his own moral compass. Nonetheless some may suggest he has a twisted sense of the real world and of reality and may even be considered crazy. Yet he has a firm grasp on what he is doing, what his goals and beliefs are, and what morals and principles he plans to adhere to. Don Quixote knows who he is and what his intentions are. He was not a madman living in a fairy tale, but an idealist and a romantic trapped in a harsh, unsympathetic world.

Don Quixote is in his later years and has less and less to fill his days so he begins to read novels of chivalry and romance. After obsessively consuming literature starring his heroes, the distinguished and honorable knights of the medieval period, he decides to devote his life to the pursuit of this outdated yet idealistic code of conduct. As Professor Ilan Stavans, author of Quixote (2015) explains in his interview with Robert Seigal, host of All Things Considered on NPR, how many of us desire to emulate the superheroes or role models we read about or see on screen. He describes how Don Quixote must have felt and Cervante’s ability to “figure out the connection between the world of fantasy and the world of reality where we are in constant need of finding something that justifies our days.”

Don Quixote visualizes himself as a genuine hero in the truest sense. A protector of all that is good and innocent, and an upholder of chivalry, courage, and valiance, our protagonist has deemed himself a savior to society. However this seems to be a self-appointed title only. The author, Cervantes, calls him a "madman", a " poor fellow", and describes how he makes decisions with "madness prevailing over reason". (p.1680) The townspeople he encounters treat him similarly. To them, he is a clownish madman, to either be laughed at or to be feared as insane, but never to be admired or looked up to. The innkeeper he forces to knight him does so only to be rid of the strange man, and the women he meets there look at him skeptically alternating between fear and amusement.

True, our protagonist does indulge in some delusional fantasies, such as confusing windmills for Giants he must slay, or an inn for a beautiful castle with turrets and a drawbridge, but overall appears to have a firm grasp reality. He simply perceives these gigantic, looming objects differently than everyone else. He desires to live in a fair and just world and sets out to do everything in his power to achieve that. He faces what he perceives as true danger so that he may protect others that cannot protect themselves. His intentions, albeit a bit misguided, can only be described as noble. He believes with great passion which can sometimes be mistaken as madness. Although not everything he sees is true, it doesn't mean that his worldview doesn't have some value and worth.

Don Quixote seems to suffer from a very specific version of lunacy. In his article “Cervantes and Don Quixote De La Mancha”, Femi Oyebode concludes that Cervantes “introduces the notion that there is an accepted version of madness, but that Don Quixote’s version is distinctive.” In other words, everyone in society suffers from sort of madness or delusions, but only socially-acceptable forms of insanity go unnoticed. Cervantes is highlighting the hypocrisy of a world in which only certain kinds of fantasy and deception are acceptable. Oyebode explains that while Cervantes allows the reader to be privy to the reactions of various people to Don Quixote, he “also leaves us, the readers, to judge the nature and quality of Don Quixote’s affliction.” As the audience, we draw on our own perceptions when making that judgment of the extent of Don Quixote’s sanity.

Don Quixote wants to be the heroic knight who saves the world. He desires to right the wrongs of the humanity despite the abuse he must endure from the very people he wishes to save. Although his sense of duty can borderline meddling and intrusive, his intentions remain pure and true. He sets out in the world ready to take on so much as he believed “so many were the wrongs that were to be righted, the grievances to be redressed, the abuses to be done away with, and the duties to be performed.” (p.1680) Despite his sometimes strange and unorthodox ideas and methods, his intentions remain grounded in reality. His purpose and aim is simply for the world to be a better place than before he arrived. And while he does desire praise and gratitude from those he saves, he doesn’t seem to mind when they don’t give it.

From ancient times to the present, tourism has occupied an essential part of people's lives. People travelled between the countries and oceans in search of their happiness and also sought the meaning of life. In the novel Don Quixote written by Miguel de Cervantes, it discussed the functions of travel by telling the story of Don Quixote and his possible experience to describe the function of travel is relevant because it is not only one way to achieve personal dreams, but additionally allows people to support their beliefs and realize the real life in the journey of exploration.

This story took place in Spain, where the knights have been extinct for more than a century. At the time, Spain relied on its colossal cavalry to complete the reunification of the country thought the War of restoration. Because of this, the 15th century became the peak of Spanish knight literature. However, Don Quixote written by Miguel de Cervantes is an anti-cavalier novel. He opposes fancy and bizarre knight novels, exposing criticism and satire on the absurd knight literature pervading the society inside Spain.

To begin with, travel experience helped Don Quixote find his pursuit and realize his knight dream. Even if the result is that he saw the reality no longer living in a world of knight novels, the author also used this to express a paranoid knight romance, that is a return to nature, selfless and realistic attitude towards life. Don Quixote did not go far for the first time, and he began his career as a knight, was beaten in a valiant fight, and was brought back to the village by good fellow village farmer. Thus, Don Quixote hastily ended his first knight career. In the novel, “ ‘What giants? ‘said Sancho Panza.‘Those you see over there,’replied his master,‘with the long arms; sometimes, they are almost two leagues long.’ ‘Look, your grace,’ Sancho responded, ‘those things that appear over there aren’t giants but windmills, and what looks like their arms are the sails that are turned by the wind and make the grindstone move.’ ‘It seems clear to me,’ replied Don Quixote, ‘that thou art not well-versed in the matter of adventures: these are giants; and if thou art afraid, move aside and start to pray whilst I enter with them in fierce and unequal combat” (Cervantes 43). When it comes to knight's novels, Don Quixote becomes crazy and unreasonable, and when he does not discuss knight's novels, he is clear-headed, talkative and reasonable. The novel is advancing in the contradiction between madness and not madness. And every time encountered setbacks, Don Quixote adopted the method of spiritual victory from my comfort, he thinks ranger Knight to eat a little loss is not surprising. 

Don Quixote's era of peace without war, there is no need for knights to uphold justice, he wants to fulfill his illusory dream of knights, and forced intervention in idealized life, but was defeated by reality. Additionally, in the text, “ And if you wish to know who commands you to do this, so that you have an even greater obligation to comply, know that I am the valiant Don Quixote of La Mancha, the righter of wrongs and injustices, and now go with God, and do not even think of deviating from what you have promised and sworn, under penalty of the penalty I have indicated to you”?Cervantes 22?said by Don Quixote. From this quote, it reveals that Don Quixote often imagines himself to be a medieval knight and he is adamant he should punish bad people and protect justice. However, the adventure didn't pay off no only did he look and look out of place, but he often did strange things and made many jokes. Don Quixote's serious pursuit of morality, is the spiritual aristocrat, at that time people in the secular slave thought is impossible to recognize him. When he finally woke up after a few false starts, he found everything was a fantasy, and went back to his hometown in despair and died. Don Quixote is nearly fifty years old, and he has lived a life of uneventful, unproductive life, but he sees the meaning of life through the romances of chivalry, and he thinks one must come into this world to do something.

Furthermore, the author also satirized the chivalry novels of Spain at that time through Don Quixote's travel and comprehensively criticizes the political, legal and moral aspects of feudal Spain in this period. A series of strange things happened on Don Quixote's second trip. With sympathy for Don Quixote, through a series of well-meaning deceit, and the madly discomfited knight Quixote was caged back. He thought he had stopped a lot this time, but a month later he secretly began his knight journey. In this story,“ As soon as he saw the inn it appeared to him to be a castle Complete with four towers and spires of gleaming silver, not to mention a drawbridge and deep moat and all the other details depicted on such castles. ” (Cervantes 10). From this quote, it reveals that Sancho follows Don Quixote because he looks at an island that Don Quixote won in a fight. Obviously, the island is pure nihilism, but because of it Sancho loyal to Don Quixote. 

In a ridiculous situation, Sancho is the most able to see through the facts, he constantly argued with the owner that it is not a castle but a guest shop. In Sancho's description, it shows the human face facing the reality or secular side. On the contrary, Don Quixote, as the human pursuit of the ideal side, the critical moment is to show courage, fearless. For example, on a dark and windy night, Sancho was frightened by the scenes around him and muttered that he shouldn't have been greedy for the false island to suffer the bad fortune, while the heroic Don Quixote was right and ready to die with the evil. The compare and contrast between the ideal and the real personality of the two masters and servants reflect that the times have changed, and Don Quixote's knightly ideal is destined to be only a nightmare in an age in which everyone lives rationally. Additionally, in the text, “with his lance in its socket, he charged at Rocinante's full gallop and attacked the first mill he came to; and as he thrust his lance into the sail, the wind moved it with so much force that it broke the lance into pieces and picked up the horse and the knight” (Cervantes 43). He fought all the way, but could not find the real enemy, finally can not only think of the distance of 30 but also 40 windmills as the sky-end of the giant, a swing of spears to the enemy, the result of the individual turned up, blue eyes. Also, as he did not care Sancho's dissuasion, the persistent thought that the road so dusty sheep is the enemy's army, two words rushed over a fight, and was finally helpless by the shepherd with stone laid a half teeth, before stopping.

Finally, the protagonist of the novel, Don Quixote, is an emotionally complex and contradictory character. On the one hand, he is praised for his heroic spirit of fighting against the strong and the weak, fighting for the righteous and brave, and daring to fight against the evil forces. However, in the text, “The people of the village and his friends, when they see Don Quixote doing something funny, they only play jokes on him and laugh at him, they never stop him or realistically tell him that they will be laughed at, they just accompany the so-called madman in his madness” (Duncan, 5). From Duncan's comments, Don Quixote in the process of traveling, there was not one to debunk the madman's trick, but cater to his acting together. Don Quixote as a fool play, add a squeeze for boring life joyful folk prescription, fill out people’s inner emptiness. 

The third travel, this time they go the furthest, but Don Quixote ends his knighthood. In this story,“during this time, he had lively conversations with his two friends the priest and the barber, in whom he said that what the world needed most were knights errant and that in him errant chivalry would be reborn”(Cervantes 40). When he returns home, perhaps with the unacceptability of defeat, perhaps with remorse for his comic knighthood, perhaps with a realisation of reality. Don Quixote comes to his senses, denounces the romances of chivalry, and walks away in his hatred of the romances of chivalry. After Don Quixote's transformation from a respectable squire into a knight, he either gets into trouble for himself or causes trouble for others in his attempt to promote chivalry, which is not in keeping with our image of a great and heroic knight, and the author also takes the opportunity to satirize the romances of chivalry that was prevalent in Spain at that time.

In summary, the most significant function of travel in the Quixote is to graciously assist Don Quixote in achieving his wishes and to reflect the social phenomenon of the time through obviously absurd descriptions. The reality of people's minds is at odds with Don Quixote's obsession with chivalry. Don Quixote's pursuit of justice is a farce to others, but it is serious to him. Therefore, Don Quixote's ideal intention seems an unattainable wonderland.

Miguel De Cervantes: the Greatest Writer Biography

Miguel de Cervantes (1547 [assumed] - 1616) is said to be one of the greatest writers in Spanish history. His greatest book, Don Quixote, tells the story of a senile old man who goes on great adventures in his head all to find his long lost lover, Lady Dulcinea. It has been translated into over 140 languages and dialects, second only to the Bible. Before he had written Don Quixote he was also a Soldier in the Spanish Navy Infantry regiment and later stayed as a soldier until 1575. He was captured by Barbary pirates that year. After 5 years, in 1580, he was released via ransom money and returned to Madrid. Another 5 years passed and he published his first book, La Galatea, which was a pastoral novel. At this time he worked as a purchasing agent for the Spanish Armada and then later as a tax collector for the government. He later was tossed into jail for 3 years in the Crown Jail of Seville for discrepancies in his accounts.

Finally, in 1605, Cervantes was in Valladolid when he wrote and published the first part of Don Quixote. In the year 1607, he settled finally settled in Madrid, it was here he lived till he died. But it was here where he wrote and published books such as Novelas ejemplares (Exemplary Novels, 1613), Viaje del Parnaso (Journey to Parnassus, 1614), Ocho comedias y ocho entremeses (Eight Comedies and Eight Appetizers, 1615), and lastly the second and final part of Don Quixote in 1615. He later croaked in April 1616 but someone published his last work Los trabajos Persiles y Sigismunda (The Travails of Persiles and Sigismunda) in 1617.

Early Life of Cervantes

It is widely accepted and assumed that Miguel was born in Acala de Henares, a city about 22 miles (35 kilometers) from Madrid on September 29th, 1547. But we’ll never 100% know unless he comes back from the grave to tell us. HOWEVER we do know he was baptised on October 9th of that year because of baptism records from the Church of Santa Maria la Mayor says:
"En domingo, nueve días del mes de octubre de mil e quinientos e cuarenta e siete años, fue bautizado Miguel, hijo de rodrigo de Cervantes e su mujer doña Leonor; fueron sus compadres Juan Pardo; baptizole el Reverendo Señor Bachiller Serrano Cura de nuestra Señora, testigos Baltasar Vázquez, Sacristán e yo que lo baptic© y firm© de mi nombre. Bachiller Serrano". City Council of Alcalá de Henares. Retrieved 27 June 2013

Which says in English: “On Sunday, the ninth day of the month of October, the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred forty and seven, Miguel, son of Rodrigo Cervantes and his wife Leonor, was baptised; his godfathers were Juan Pardo; he was baptised by the Reverend Bachelor Bartolom© Serrano, Priest of Our Lady. Witnesses, Baltasar Vázquez, Sexton, and I, who baptised him and signed this in my name. Bachelor Serrano” Rodrigo Cervantes, his father was something they call a barber-surgeon, which literally meant that they were both a barber and a surgeon. (sounds sketchy to me but whatever bro) He did many things such as setting bones (placing them back into place so they can heal), blood lettings (opening veins?), and other minor medical things. Miguel’s grandfather was a lawyer and his uncle was the mayor of Cabra for many years. His mother, Leonor de Cortinas, was the daughter of a nobleman, who literally got his fortune YOINKED and had to sell his daughter into marriage 1543. This led to a very unfaithful marriage between his parents. There is not much known about the early life of Miguel, but we do know that he moved from town to town and attended the Imperial School. This school was an Jesuit school for boys in Madrid. His siblings (oldest to youngest) are as follows; Rodrigo. Magdalena, and Juan. These are know only through the father’s will.

Military and Captivity

Miguel was supposedly forced to leave Spain, but historians are unsure why this is. Possible reasons include: fleeing a warrant, being a sword wielding maniac, or stealing an ice cream cone from a child (that last one may or may not be true, don’t fact check it). He later came back and joined the Spanish army as a Soldier in the naval marines. He was stationed in Naples and remained idle for about a year. In the heat of battle, Miguel had a fever but refused to sit and watch supposedly stating “I’d rather die for my God and my king than keep under cover!” He then received three whole gunshot wounds, 2 in the abdomen and 1 in his left arm. Even after this and being in the hospital for 6 months he still went back to serve. However, on September 26h, 1575 his ship was attacked by Ottoman pirates and he had become a slave for 5 whole heckin years. His family later paid a ransom and he was set free.

Later Life

After the whole being yoinked by pirates thing, he returned to Spain and started to write more, but he was not able to support himself on his writing much like other authors of that day and age. He also later worked as a tax collector, his grimy lil hands traveled all of the place to collect taxes due to the crown. In order to try to get to the “New World”, he tried to apply as an accountant and as a governor. This did not work out. He then worked in the baking industry and also later turned down a position as secretary to the Court of Lemos.

He died of Type 2 Diabetes in Madrid on April 22 1616 and was put in a hole and covered with dirt later the next day. He was buried in Central Madrid, someone later just took his bones in 1673 when work was being done on the building but they were returned later so it was fine, I guess.
